I want to love my Berkey. I know people who love theirs. And it certainly is attractive. Unfortunately, we had to replace the filters 3 times in the first 6 months. The first time we noticed the chlorine taste returning to our water. After that, we just spot checked periodically with the red dye. Sometimes we could flush the filter and it would take care of the problem, other times not. Then we would call the company, who would very nicely send out another filter set (FREE, please note that we weren''t charged for new filters each time). One time the filter caps fell right off (the company said it was a bad batch).

So now I''m paranoid. If we don''t test every batch of water, how do we know the filters are actually working? Most of the time, we couldn''t tell by taste that they were failing; it was only the presence of red dye in the water when we tested that alerted us. I wouldn''t feel comfortable at ALL trusting these filters if my health depended on it, like in a disaster or third world country. It makes me wonder how often everybody else is red dye testing their water. Probably not very often, if my experience is anywhere near typical.

On top of that, I gave up completely on the fluoride filters, which were one of my main reasons for purchasing the Berkey. No amount of flushing could get rid of the taste.

Now the plastic spigot handle has broken off (two pieces of plastic 1/16" in size at most were holding it on, one of them broke). It''ll only cost $19 to replace it. My husband stuck a key ring in the hole and we''re getting by until I throw the whole thing out the window or breakdown and buy the part. I''m shopping for alternatives if anybody can recommend a better filter.

They do get points for good customer service, though the company could never explain WHY the filters kept failing. I appreciated them sending the replacements out right away, but it gets pretty annoying to have to wait to use it till new filters arrive and then wonder how long until those ones go bad. Which reminds me, I need to go dye my water. Fingers crossed...

My husband and I have been using Brita style water filters for years -not only does our area (Metro DC) have atrocious bleachy water, but our condo building shuts off the water for monthly repairs and it always runs cloudy white and silty brown afterwards. (You should see the muddy-metallic buildup in the toilet cisterns.)

But we use so much water between us for tea and coffee and the home carbonation system, that poor little filter jug would get filled countless times per day, and that''s without using it for cooking water. What I hadn''t noticed was I had eventually stopped drinking water, at all. I had grown to hate water so much that I was disguising it with herbal teas and juice. That''s not right. As soon as I drank my first glass of Berkey water, I could not believe how sweet and light it was. Pretty much exactly what water should be! Gone was the dreaded heavy flatness of the old filter water. It has now become a sought after beverage -we still have to work on developing the habit, but it''s quite a pleasure.

The 4 filters take up a lot of space in top and bottom reservoirs, but there''s still a ton of water on tap; we don''t even fill it daily now, so I am sure we will have a full year of use before cleaning and changing the filters out.

My next purchase will be the glass sight spigot, since it''s cumbersome to lift the top section to check on the lower levels, and I don''t really have the grip for it when full either.

The instructions are quite involved, but I figured it all out quickly enough. They tell you to put the conical white washer inside, narrow end to hole, and the flat black one outside, but it leaked with a slow drip. No matter how I tightened it or how many tricks I learned on the manufacturer/distributor websites, it still leaked into the sink after the first tightening, then seeped slowly into the rubber base liner after the second tightening. It spent the first few weeks hanging over the kitchen sink and getting in the way of everything, until I switched the washers. The white washer doesn''t look great outside, but the leak has been sealed tight, and I''ve been able to move the ensemble to a safer place.

Bottom line, this is the best investment we have made all year. I spent months researching water purification methods and briefly considered the white ceramic candles, but figured if there were ever a municipal water issue, this would be the way to go. It filters out everything except the minerals. Water being so important to survival and health, I figured it was about time we took the leap and got one (in November), and we do not regret it.

***Update, May 2, 2012: Six months later and we''re still loving the clean water. I''ve had to scrub out the top reservoir only a couple of times because of sediment buildup (like plastic dust) from our condo water that floats in the water and coats the inside of the reservoir. Then I rinse out the bottom reservoir just for the sake of it. Last night was my first time needing to scrub the black filters because the flow had stopped. Six months is a good run between scrubs! It''s back to flowing perfectly.

Also, I''m even more relieved that I have the PF-2 Fluoride/Arsenic filters because last week I found out that Maryland has some of the most heavily fluoridated water in the nation!

I posted this elsewhere on Amazon for the Big Berkey and two black filters. This is the same product and actually my purchase came with both the black filters and these two fluoride filters, so I''m re-posting to make sure that buyers beware. The Big Berkey (BB) has been a regular source of frustration and, ultimately, a significant waste of money for me. I would advise everyone to avoid this carelessly designed water purification system. Compared to a Brita or Pur water pitcher, the BB is a significantly bigger up front layout of cash. Doing some research and reading reviews, I was convinced it was worth it, both for superior water filtering and long term savings in water filters. As far as the filtering, I''ll never know. What I can tell you is that the Black Berkey Purification Element design is exceedingly poor. After all this time on the market, you''d think some engineer for Berkey would care enough to have figured out a satisfactory method of securing the filter to the upper chamber. This isn''t the case, however. You have to poke the spindly "threaded mount" onto a washer, then through a hole in the chamber, then secure the element by screwing on a wing nut. Sounds simple enough and it is. Except the wing nuts routinely--and I''ve been through three or so--strip the threads on the stupid filter. Then it doesn''t seal to the upper chamber. Then you have unfiltered water drip into the lower chamber. I bought another expensive set of black purification filter elements, just to get my hands on another wing nut. Same thing happened. And yes, I was very careful. If the wingnuts aren''t tight, unfiltered water seeps into the lower chamber where you expect filtered water. I tried the new filters with the wingnuts. Same thing happened to one of them. The Berkey instructions helpfully advise you to check that there are no leaks by putting food coloring in the upper chamber. I have used all the food coloring in the house, trying time after time to seal the !**#%^! threaded mounts through the upper chamber, tightening the nut just tight enough but not so tight as to strip the threads, then waiting to see if the food coloring comes through. What a horrible little exercise and waste of water as one time after another the colored water seeps around the hole in the upper chamber. It is a pathetic design, really, for fastening a filter to a metal bucket, i.e., the upper chamber. Also, as others have mentioned, the spigot is almost worthless; I upgraded immediately to the glass tubed spigot; otherwise you can''t see how much water is in the lower chamber. So there was that unexpected cost of a new spigot; the cost of another set of filters to try with new wingnuts; and the initial outlay. All added up to a routinely leaky and, therefore, worthless setup. Not to mention the hours wasted messing with the threads and wingnuts and waiting for unfiltered water to seep around the wingnuts into the lower chamber. A complete disaster.

I was fed up with replacing the filters for my old system every 3 months and decided to buy the Big Berkey water filtering system.

Although it''s much more expensive than my old Pure system, replacing the filters every year will be more cost effective.

The filter worked great for 3 month. Water tasted great, no after taste and I was really happy with my purchase.

3 months later, water started to taste funny. I thought it''s time to clean the system so I took it apart and washed it in the dish washer (as it''s recommended in the manual).

Put the filter back together and water still have a acidic after taste. My wife told me the same thing (before me even telling her about it).

Obviously the filters went bad. It''s just 3 months. There were supposed to last for more than a year! I''m just filtering tap water and refilling the filter 1-2 times/week!.

I''m hugely disappointed in the product. I could have stayed with my old Pure system and changed the filter every 3 month and saved $300!

I think this product is greatly overrated or maybe it used to be good in the past. I don''t recommend it to anyone.

Warning! Do not handle product horizontally, the black filter element will break off at the screw-in base in less then a year. Trying to get a warranty replacement from Millenium Concepts was impossible, even after they admitted to having a "bad" batch. I do not recommend this product or the distributors.

Capresso 4640.93 3-pack Charcoal Water Filters

Capresso 4640.93 3-pack Charcoal Water Filters for Capresso CoffeeTeam TS and CoffeeTeam GS Coffee MakerHow does one review a water filter? I made several pots of coffee in my new coffee maker w/o the filter. They tasted very good. Next I inserted the filter and made more coffee. I could not detect any difference in taste. It still had the same good taste. So, either my taste buds are jaded or my unfiltered water is just as good as the filtered version or the filter is not designed to alter taste. Based on my experience the only thing I can review is the filter setup. The filter holder slides easily out of the slot in the bottom of the water compartment. The filter is simply placed into the holder which, in turn, is effortlessly inserted back into the water compartment. Not having anything else to go by I feel obligated to rate the filter a 5 due to its ease of use. However, because I have been making coffee w/o a filter for my entire adult life I will continue to do so in the future and forego the purchase of additional overpriced filters and instead buy that Lamborghini I always wanted.

I have a Saeco grinder/maker and I don''t know what a Coffee Team GS or TS is. But, these filters looked simular to the ones in my appliance and they fit perfectly. I guess the filter manufacturer won''t be responsible if they don''t fit but I just wanted those in doubt to know that they do.

TriStar SB Steam Buggy Home Steam Cleaner

TriStar SB Steam Buggy Home Steam CleanerI am definitely glad I made this investment. The product truly cleans as shown on the infomercial. I am chemical-sensitive and this makes cleaning a health hazard for me. The Steam buggy provided healthy option to clean and sanatize my home!

I had purchased the Eureka HotShot prior to ordering the Steam Buggy, and though this product was effective, the resevoir was much smaller and would only steam clean for 3 to 4 min. and I had to refill 3 times more often with HotShot vs. Steam Buggy.

Steam Buggy is fairly light and easy to tote. The attatchments are much easier to change than on HotShot. At first use, SB was a little cumbersome, but one I got the hang of it, cleaning was a breeze!

An added benefit:

While cleaning, you inadvertantly get a sauna and facial at the same time! =)

At first I was skeptical about the Steam Buggy--I had watched the infomercial, and it just seemed too good to be true. I decided to give it a try and couldn''t have been more pleased. Using just water, the Steam Buggy has powered through all sorts of grease and gunk inside and outside my house with NO effort on my part. It even has an attachment for cleaning floors, which makes short work of my dogs'' muddy foot prints and my baby daughter''s food spills.

The only thing that I would change about it is that there is no way to quickly make the steam stop. Even if you turn it off, the steam and hot water continues to come out for a few minutes.

I had read good things about Steam Buggy and it worked OK for the half dozen or so times I did use it. I used it to get off wallpaper but it did leak so I burned my hand with the hot water. Tightening the attachments didn''t help. I also used it to steam clean my stairs and it worked fine. I didn''t use it for about 4 months and when I tried to remove the cap, it was impossible to remove. I had to take it to my auto mechanic and even with his tools, he couldn''t remove it without breaking it. I''ve noticed other reviewers talk about the cap breaking. TriStar is impossible to get in touch with. I tried calling for days to no avail. I''m tossing Steam Buggy and buying the McCulloch MC-1275 Steam Cleaner since it got good reviews on this site. If you get a Steam Buggy, remove the cap when storing it, especially if you don''t use it often.

I bought this product about 8 months ago. I use it on almost everything. The worst thing I hate to clean is the toilet and the stove, because it involves a hole bunch of scrubbing. With the steam cleaner you just aime and wipe. I had a really dirty oven and I used the steam buggy and did a little scrub and then wiped and it was clean. It passed my own mothers inspection she is a clean freek. So overall it works great and saves money on buying cleaning products.

Does a great job for large hot tubs. Just remember that the first time you hook up the water, a moderate cloud of carbon dust will come out. So let it flow for about a minute before you stick it in your crystal clear hot tub water.

Greenway Water Dispenser Filtration System Save 15% Off

Greenway Water Dispenser Filtration SystemI was looking for a way to save some money and still utilize our water dispenser because as a family of four, we consume lots of water. After reading the reviews, I decided to risk it and it worked great on my Primo water dispenser.

The only time it leaked is when I poured too much water into the top chamber. Once you get an idea on how much water it takes, it will not leak if it is setup on a level surface. It paid for itself after two weeks.

I love this product! I wanted a water cooler for along time but didn''t want to deal with water delivery service or carrying/lifting heavy bottles, this seemed like a great solution. Like another reviewer I had a hard time separating the top half from the bottom half when it came out of the packaging they were "suctioned" together and I needed help to get them apart. You need to soak the new filter for a half an hour: charcoal colored bits came out of it and I was concerned that it would get into the water but after the half hour soak and rinse all was clear. Our water tastes great with no chlorine/chemical odor. Filling the top every couple of days is easier to me than arranging for bottles to be delivered or remembering to put out the empties and have to lug in those heavy bottles. And with back problems there''s no way would I be able to lift the bottle to put it on top of the cooler, so this is the perfect answer. I purchased it along with an Avanti hot/cold water dispenser unit Avanti WDP75 Hot and Cold Water Dispenserwhich unfortunately is defective (and the company has terrible customer service) so I''ve ordered a Clover cooler and hoping for better luck (and returning the Avanti.) The Greenway Water Dispenser Filtration System is a very smart idea, great design, and works well. And bonus, it is attractive and looks better on top of the cooler in my kitchen than the delivery bottles would.

Tried everything, would rate lower based on shady packaging. I realize everyone is trying to save a few bucks here and there, but the packaging was horrible. The top is wedged into the bottom and I could not pull it out. I tried everything from soaking it in soapy water to having someone help me. Thought I finally got it to budge and then I noticed the bottom part was cracked all the way up towards the top. Wasn''t able to use it, threw it in the trash out of frustration. Would not recommend to anyone until they improve on the packaging!

I live in a 3rd floor apartment, and we were lugging 2 5 gallon jugs of wter up all the flights of stairs at least every week. I figured out the price of this jug versus the water we were hauling, and it came out to the same cost with less hassle. It''s like a Brita pitcher, but much bigger.

The only thing that I can find that I don''t like so well is that it leaks a little around the filter, about a drop of water ever 3 seconds or so. It''s not a big deal, but it bugs me slightly.

I sat mine on one of the crock-style bases and have had no issues whasoever. I prefer my water room temperature or slightly cool, so I sit the crock by the window in the winter time to keep my water a few degrees cooler. All around, a great purchase.

Aqua Mix Heavy Duty Tile and Grout Cleaner Save 31% Off

Aqua Mix Heavy Duty Tile and Grout Cleaner - QuartI ordered this product based on various positive reviews. I was not disappointed.

When I first applied the product, I was uncertain as to whether it was really doing the job on the grout, but I did not realize how dirty our light colored grout had become. Wow, what a difference. I used the dilution ratio of 1 product to 5 water and it cleaned very well. I do have a couple of spots to redo now that I can see the difference in the colors. The spots that I need to redo are around the main cooking area and I may change the dilution ratio for those particular areas.

We have a very large kitchen/dining area and it is all tiled so it took me a good part of the day since I only did small areas at a time. I put the product on with a sponge mop and used a scrub brush and a toothbrush to get into the grout. Our tile has been down since 2005 and even with regular cleaning, I still am surprised at the good results with Aqua Mix. A little goes a very long way.

I will definitely purchase this product again when I need it.

I bought this grout cleaner and followed the directions exactly as given. After my tile floor dried, I didn''t see any difference on my grout, what a disappointment! I then bought a much cheaper product, the Totally Awesome Grout Cleaner, and it WAS awesome! Now my grout looks like new! Don''t waste your money on this one.

Charcoal Replacement Filters for Stainless Steel Compost Pail

Charcoal Replacement Filters for Stainless Steel Compost Pail,Set of 2The double filters work great with the endurance Compost Pail. There are no odors from our kitchen scraps which is key. The only negative is that although I don''t smell anything from the pail, the fruit flies do. The pail still attracts fruit flies in the summer months. I don''t know that they can actually get in past the filters but they try. And I don''t know if there is a way around this issue.

I ordered what I thought was the correct size for my 1.5 Gal compost pail but received filters that were far too small for the lid. The problem is that there is no size on the packaging and I think the seller sent the wrong item. I still had the box that my compost pail came in so I knew the size of the pail. The filters are not described well online so you don''t really know what you are getting.

I am very pleased with the composter pail. My former pail was plastic and after time became stained and carried an odor that cleaning would not remove. The stainless steel type cleans beautifully, can be placed in the dishwasher and unlike the ceramic types won''t break. This model holds quite a bit of scraps eliminating the need to empty on a daily basis and the double charcoal filter system really works in odor control.

GREAT PRODUCT! I have a compost pail that I use every day, several times a day, and I keep it in my kitchen. I would say it gets filled up about every 5 days, so its sitting for that length of time with all the compost inside. When I remove the lid to add more to the pail, sometimes the smell is just awful, especially in the warmer weather when things start to decompose very quickly. But this filter is terrific; I never smell ANYTHING when the lid is on (and thankfully, neither does anyone else!) I highly recommend this filter...it really does the job it''s supposed to!

Tap Master Jr. PLUS Counter-top Water Filter Save 37% Off

Tap Master Jr. PLUS Counter-top Water FilterI''m not one for fads, so the whole bottled water craze eluded me. It seemed pretty wasteful, and the idea of paying large sums of money for what is esentially still free was out of the question.

Lately, however, all of the reports of the high levels of flouride and pharmaceuticals in our water supply have been weighing heavy on my mind. I decided to finally get a water filter. Installing something heavy duty was out of the question as I am an apartment renter so I went with the Tap Master Jr.

Positive Points:

1.This system was incredibly easy to install, and looks just fine.

2.Switching from filtered to non-filtered water (regular pressure) is super easy

3. The difference in water quality is clear

4. The filtered water pressure is not that bad at all. As another reviewer pointed out, you can fill a pot of water without wasting a half hour of your life.

5. Cost effective. Beats buying bottled!

DeLonghi Nescafe Dolce Gusto Genio Coffeemaker Save 34% Off

DeLonghi Nescafe Dolce Gusto Genio CoffeemakerMe & my wife researched a coffee maker for our new house for months I''m talking 6 months; and that''s before we even bought the house. We both love capps & lattes so were looking for a single serve coffee maker. We looked at all of them Keurig, Tassimo, Senseo, Dolce Gusto. We were looking for variety, quality of brew & product, durability, & price.

Obviously Keurig gives you the most variety as they are the #1 Single Serve company in the US; they also do have a Fill-Your-Own-Coffee pod which is nice. Price was OK too, but the quality of the product & durability were issues. We''ve read mass amounts of reviews with horror stories of pods exploding, water leaks not something we wanted to get into. Plus with the Keurigs you need to get the expensive ones to get the best out of it & you''re still dealing with break downs regardless. Also, people complained about the temp of the coffee.

Tassimo''s coffee quality seemed OK. Price was good too we liked that you could buy the pods at BB&B easily. But once again we heard stories of pods exploding, but not to the extent of the Keurigs. But we were still very interested in Tassimo.

Senseo was never really in the game considering the quality is substandard & variety is small.

Which brought us to the Dolce Gusto line from Nescafe''. The variety is average in all honesty with only Nescafe'' producing the pods, but the price points of the machines were good actually the cheaper one I think was $89 & it has good reviews but we were looking at the expensive ones to see about quality & if it were worth it. Quality of the brew was something we heard good things of, especially on the higher models due to the pressure systems.

After it was all said & done we decided on this one, The Genio. We have been loving this thing! The quality of the standard blend is OK, strong but OK. The others are awesome! Capps have been great, Mochachinos have been wonderful, the latte was outstanding! My wife tried a Chai Tea Latte the other day & has been in love with it. The machine is a little loud, but in the other room its barely noticeable. We have been very pleased with the coffee maker & pods. Buy them in bulk on Amazon saves money & join their rewards program! 10 points per box 100 points = free box. You buy the bulk boxes from Amazon you get $30 purchase you can''t go wrong!

I got one of these for Christmas, and I wasn''t sure about it. I''m not a fan of buying capsules, but I figured what the heck. So I gave it a try, and I absolutely love this thing. It''s cool, it''s really small and doesn''t take up much counter space. It fires up in no time, and it makes a top notch cup of espresso. I really like the lungo pods (long shot of espresso 4 oz.) These come out a bit weaker than an espresso, but a good bit stronger than a regular coffee, and I''ve been drinking way too many of them lately.

The Americano (regular) coffee from this is decent, although the pod selection is less than a Keurig, but this is really an espresso machine. Also the pod based cappucinos are surprisingly good. Forget the cost of the pods, I''ll have saved enough Starbucks cash to pay for this in no time. Unless you plan on dropping a grand on a real espresso machine, this is the guy you want.

Also, it leaves a really nice crema. Very impressed, and couldn''t recommend this more.

It''s a good little machine when it works.Coffee is good and strong;enough flavors to keep everyone happy, and a terrific system for making cappuccino. However,we are on our 2d machine, had to return the 1st and call Nescafe customer service to get the replacement working. It seems that when these sit around for a while in a warehouse ,something in the unit dries up,doesn''t pump water at all out of the carton and needs to be primed.Maybe fresher inventory would have solved the problem? It comes with a 2 year manufacturers warranty, and Nescafe customer service seemed very competent (enjoyed the USA based representatives)They got us up and running, so we''ll keep on using it.

*4 month update-The coffee started coming out lukewarm after a month or two ,we needed to heat it in microwave to be drinkable.Called customer service(Nescafe)and they recommended descaling. went through the descaling process(tedious) and no change in temperature .still lukewarm. called customer service again, they offered to exchange the machine,2 weeks later, new machine came and was dried up,would not prime,no water, burning smell. I think when the next machine comes,we will liquidate the pods we own and just phase out of the Nescafe Dolce Gusto program. The company tries hard, but quality control is poor.

Essick Air 696-400 Variable Speed Whole House Humidifier

Essick Air 696-400 Variable Speed Whole House HumidifierThe good news is, it humidifies. That''s what I bought it for and that''s what it does. The level of humidity is adjustable, allowing the unit to automatically cycle on and off as needed. And yes, you can adjust the fan speed, but getting it anywhere near the upper range makes it sound like a B29 taking off. IT''S LOUD! I leave it on med-low and it''s not bad at all.

It has two plastic 2.6 gallon water bottles and at the med-low fan speed I use, I go through about 1 bottle per day. It keeps the rooms close to it quite comfortable, but rooms farther away don''t get much. Your mileage will vary depending on humidifier location, floor plan, and normal air circulation.

As far as being built "sturdy" (as one reviewer pointed out), I have to disagree. The entire housing is made of plastic. Without the water bottles in it, it''s so light that on a hard floor it easily rolls away with the lightest bump. Unless you are on carpet, I recommend NOT installing the castors that come with it. The weakest part of the whole unit is the stupid lid. It''s constantly falling off it''s hinges when I''m replacing the water bottles. It''s just poorly designed.

I highly recommend buying the optional "air cleaner filter" (model #1051) that fits on the back. It helps clear your house of dust and pollen and also makes your internal wick last longer. For allergy sufferers, this is an absolute MUST.

Speaking of making wicks last longer, it wasn''t until I read the owner''s manual that I found out soft water is NOT recommended as it''s supposedly not good for the wick. Oh well. The only NON-softened water I have is my outdoor hose and there''s NO WAY I''m going out there every morning in the snow to fill my humidifier bottles!

All in all, I give it a 5 in performance, 4 in construction, and a 2 in convenience. (Hey, refilling and lugging 22 lbs of water every morning gets old!) Since performance is really what we want out of it, it gets an overall score of 4 stars from me.

BTW, use about 1/2 as much of the anti-bacterial additive as the bottle recommends and it does just fine.

Cheers!

ON the plus side the unit is capable of putting a lot of moisture into the air. In the first 24 hours of running it put almost 15 gallons out.

The negatives stack up fast mostly due to poor finish quality.

1) The stain on the top cover has drip marks on it and portions of it look like a chemical was spilled on it removing its luster.

2) The back of the unit is not stained but is white and in the directions its says to leave the unit 4" from any wall which means you do see the back of the unit. The hinges on the back which hold the cover in place and stick up were not painted and they are clearly visible.

3) The unit is made of plastic which is to be expected. However the panels of the unit are so thin that they were all warped. The top is ill fitting at best and the front panel has a clear bow to it.

4) Its loud on anything more then the lowest settings you cannot carry on a conversation on the telephone in the same room with it.

To sum up: It looks like junk but humidifies well.

I''m off to go find a place to hide this from sight. Wish it was as pretty as the picture.

The product arrived damaged, not from shipping damage, but from packing at the factory. Too damaged to use. Dealer said they didn''t want it back. It''s a good thing, because it was replaced by a unit that wouldn''t run. I took the fan unit (which wan''t damaged) out of the damaged unit and put it in the second unit and it runs, but only at a low fan speed. Anything higher causes too much vibration noise. Also, both units we received were poorly finished, with the base being several shades lighter than the cover, which matches the picture on the box. It looks like they only gave the bottom one coat of stain. Thanks to the dealer who refunded our money. My email with complaints directly to the manufacturer got no response.

I received this a couple days ago and so far so good. The humidity has gone from 40 to 50% in our house and it is much more comfortable. We do have a humidifier built into our furnace, but the high-efficiency furnaces just aren''t on long enough to put out much water.

One caveat on this unit design with the angled corners the right and left bottles are not interchangeable. With a rectangular type unit, when the right bottle empties you can switch the full left one to the right, fill the empty bottle and put it in the left. This way you were constantly cycling through fresh water fills while only needing to refill one bottle at a time. With this angle corner design unit, you really need to allow both bottles to empty, or at least refill both when you do refill in order to ensure fresh water is always feeding in. This also can cause waste of any antibacterial solution being used.

Other than that, works great and I would recommend.

This is a great humidifier that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but extremely functional. It is very sturdy and the craftsmanship is wonderful. You can even adjust the output to fit any house, big or small. Great buy!

Jura-Capresso 13299 Impressa Z6 Automatic Coffee and Espresso Center Save 25% Off

Jura-Capresso 13299 Impressa Z6 Automatic Coffee and Espresso CenterI recently purchased the new Z6 after seeing one at William''s Sonoma around Christmas. I resisted the temptation to purchase until a friend of mine called and told me he found one under the Christmas tree! We both purchased the Capresso 1500 about 3 years ago and thought those were the "Cat''s Meow". Now fast forward to 2007 and the Z6 is here as the super automatic on steroids.

After unpacking I sat down and watched the included DVD twice. Once with my wife and once alone as I set up the machine. After you get through the initial setup and programming the machine is very easy to operate and maintain. Making a coffee drink is as simple as pushing one of 8 drink buttons on the front panel. I like the idea of the thermal milk storage tank but it''s recommended that you don''t store milk in it after use. I find this a little inconvenient to have to pour the milk into another container. With my previous C1500 I just put the plastic milk jug in the refrigerator and used it the next day.

I bought this unit to replace my C1500 for two major reasons. The first was my C1500 struggled to make a really hot coffee drink. I found myself drinking the beverage too quickly to avoid it getting cold or putting it into the microwave to heat it back up. The Z6 makes a hotter beverage that is much improved but still could be a few degrees hotter in my opinion. The second reason I purchased the Z6 was to get a bigger cup under the spouts. The C1500 was limited in what size cup I could place under the spouts and the Z6 allows me to put virtually any reasonable sized cup under the spout.

The Z6 is a beautiful piece to look at sitting on your counter and will be the envy of many a guest. However it has a chrome finish which appears durable but I would caution you to take extra precautions not to scratch the finish as it would be permanent. I place a paper towel on the lower tray when using ceramic type mugs to avoid scratching.

Update on 05/26/2008

I would like to say that the Z6 has been performing flawlessly for the past year and a half. As long as you perform the routine maintenance the Z6 will provide many years of trouble-free performance. I''ve also been putting the thermal milk container in the refrigerator with milk in it with no issues.

I bought the Z6 after my refurbished Capresso C3000 broke down after 3 years. I had liked my Capresso C3000 so I thought I would go with Jura''s top of the line machine (Jura bought out Capresso and now all the machines are called Jura) I had this machine now for about a year and I have to say its is not worth the price $3,600. I listed the pros and cons that I found with the machine.

Pros

1) Looks Great. It is the Rolls Royce of coffee machines.

2) The Espresso/Coffee is good. (Not Excellent, and don''t tell me about using diffrent beans I have, its not like I''m using folgers.

2) The Steamed/frothed milk attachment produces excellent results.

3) One touch button to make cappuccino/Lattes. (Nice to impress friends)

4) Has a timer for when to turn on and off so you don''t need to wait around for the initial warmup time when you first start the machine.

Cons

1)The metal plate where the cup sits scratches very easily.

2)You can only fit a normal size coffee mug (8 oz)under the nozzle. You cannot deviate from this size at all. No travel mugs or slightly tall mugs. Same height restrictions for the cappuchino/Latte attachment.

3) The hotwater dispenser trickles out hot water. It takes almost 1 and half minutes to fill 8 oz of hot water. Its quicker to ''Nuke'' the same amount of water in the microwave for tea.

4) You need to clean the machine with special tablets and they cost about $20 for 6. You will more than likely go thru 1 tablet every 2 months or at least 6 in a year and more if heavily used. Also theres no way around this since the machines displays ''Clean'' and beeps every time you turn it on until you go thru the cleaning process.

5) Also the water filter. This costs about $20 and needs to be changed about every 3 months depending on the use. If you don''t use the filter then you will have to descale the machine every 6 months or so but that also depends on the the water hardness in your area.

6) The electric cord is a fairly decent length which is good thing but its not retractable which is a pain. The C3000 had a retractable cord, so you would only pull out the amount of cord needed and the rest would be unseen. With the Z6 I have my plug right behind the machine on my countertop and have about of 2 feet of cord I need to hide.

7) The silver front is also just plastic and it is not made of any type of metal.

8) The rinse feature (which was a button on the front panel of the C3000) is buried deep in the menu with the Z9. So you have to press the Dial, then turn the dial to go to maintenance then turn it again until you find rinse then you have to press the button once to rinse the coffee spout then again for the espresso attachment (even if you didn''t use it). This is a major pain to do and time consuming especially in the morning. So you tend not to rinse the machince as much as you should. This affects the taste of the coffee because little bits of the old grounds get mixed in with the new ones. On my old capresso I would press the rinse button before I made my coffee and then again after I made it so it would stay cleaner longer and not affect the taste of my coffee.

So, based on these facts i would have to say that for the price I would expect more. It is a nice machine but you could purchase the Jura E8 for the 1/3 the price and it would do everything the Z6 does (Except the one touch cappuccino/Latte) which is overrated anyways. Also there are more fully automatic machines entering the market with almost the same features but lower the price. When I did my research for this machine almost everybody said it was the greatest thing since sliced bread but after paying $3600 who would admit it wasn''t all that?

UPDATE:2012-01-12

So had this machine for a few years now and so far I''m not impressed. The front plastic has warped off near the bottom tray since it comes in contact with water when making coffee/rinsing. The tray that you pull out to clean the grinds an empty the water does not fit that well and the now and then I get the ''Tray missing'' error. When I was cleaning the machine I got a ''error 8'' message and was like ok so what do you want me to do? So I turned off the machine because nothing else worked and had to restart the cleaning process. Pardon my French but that really sucks because the cleaning tablets are not cheap and happened 2 out of 5 cleanings I did. Also the price on the water filter cartridges have gone up by at least 10 dollars. I cannot find anything at the price I bought these at before. I really wanted to like this machine but man for a premium price I don''t think anybody has to deal with these issues.

I am giving a review of the Z5....not the Z6. I believe the insides are very similar if not identical and that most of the changes were cosmetic. I have had the Z5 for about a year and have been very pleased.

Pros:

Excellent coffee & cappuccino. You can tweak the machine twenty different ways. I think it is not as good as the best coffee joints but it is pretty close. The convenience of waking up and hitting a button can not be overstated. You will hooked forever after a week. It has worked flawlessly since I bought it. If two people in a household go to Starbucks every day, just buy this and it will pay for itself in no time.

Cons:

The biggest con is the coffee temperature. You will see this pop up again and again in reviews. Buy yourself a very well insulated coffee cup and preheat the cup by adding hot water from the machine and letting in sit for two minutes. The cup will then be hot and won''t suck out the energy from the added coffee.

All in all..when my Z5 dies I will most likely replace it with a Z6.

If you are a regular at coffee shops, paying $4 and up for frothy coffee and milk drinks you can make your own and amortize this machine''s initial cost in less than a year. Jura of Switzerland is the leader in this type of automatic coffee centers and it is no wonder they sell so well all over Europe.

KDF 55 Filtration Media for Chlorine

KDF 55 Filtration Media for Chlorine, Heavy Metal, Bacteria, Iron Removal
  • KDF process media to safely reduce or remove chlorine, iron, heavy metals, bacteria
  • Great additive for filter tanks, use 5-10 pounds in a standard whole house filter carbon tank
  • Removes 99% of chlorine and heavy metals in your water
  • Natural, no chemicals, long lasting
  • Patented KDF process media are 100 percent recyclable and contain no chemical additives

I ordered the KDF85 & 55 together and it came together in the same package, so I will write one review for both products. Years ago I installed a whole house filter using two 20-inch Big Blue pre-filter stages. The first is for the sediment filter and the second stage originally was a carbon block filter. Well anything with carbon, as you know, will get fouled with time. My sediment filter was still working but my carbon block filter had become clogged and started leaking from the sides. So I decided to forego anything with carbon in it. I went ahead and bought an "Empty Refillable Filter Cartridge for 20" Big Blue Housing," also from Amazon; you can do a search and see it for yourself.

I had plan to purchase 5 pounds of both KDF 85 & 55, but I forgot to update my cart and ended up with only one pound of KDF 85. LOL.

I''m glad when you buy a certain poundage of media they always give you a little more than what you ordered.

The packaging is a little disconcerning. Both items together were way over 6 pounds! Yet it was sent in a post office priority box with very little cushioning. The crumbled up brown paper that was to act as shipping cushioning had all been smashed flat by the heavy media. When the box arrived, it had a very large gash on the side of the box. I was really afraid the contents inside were damaged. The only saving grace was that both the media were wrapped in thick bubble wrap. I do wish they had label the bags, the only way I figured it out was KDF85 was a pound and KDF55 was five pounds. If they were the same, I wouldn''t have known. Also be careful of unrolling the media from their bags, one bag didn''t have a ziplock top; I almost spilled it.

Post Script: Keep in mind KDF55 only removes Chlorine and NOT Chloramine. You have to look at your individual city water report to see if your city adds Chloramine to your water supply. Chloramine is like the ugly step-sister of Chlorine. Unfortunately, my city does add Chloramine. In order to remove Chloramine, you would have to buy media with coconut or walnut shells in it, I believe (don''t quote me on that though).

Buy KDF 55 Filtration Media for Chlorine Now

I''ve used this product together with kdf 85 to removed the sulfuric smell and arsenic in our water. It worked well and as advertised, the only downside to this product is the price. :-( but i highly recommend this product.

HealthMate HM400 Air Cleaner from Austin Air Save $0.01 Off

HealthMate HM400 Air Cleaner from Austin AirLiving in a rural area contributes greatly to my asthma and severe allergies. Working outside, bush hogging or doing any number of outside chores really aggravates my symptoms. After retreating indoors I had constant sneezing, watery itchy eyes and coughing. It was time for an air purifier! I researched air purifiers very thoroughly before making this purchase; especially expert reviews regarding how well this unit compared to others and customer reviews to see if folks found it an effective unit and what problems, if any, they may have encountered. I finally decided on the HealthMate HM400 Air Cleaner from Austin Air. I ordered two of them, one for the living room and one for the bedroom. The living room unit is only on while I am watching TV, the bedroom unit is kept on all night. Both are kept on the II setting. The difference for me has been nearly instantaneous! It was a Eureka moment when I suddenly realized hey, my eyes aren''t itching as much, not coughing, and not sneezing!! (My allergy symptoms have been reduced I would say by 50% and I hardly ever have to "hit" my inhalers anymore.) I recommend this unit without hesitation, for me it was the perfect choice. It is on the upper end of the price scale, but, in my opinion absolutely worth the money. These units have been in my home since April 1st this year and so far, so good. If there is any change in my opinion of these units I will post it.

Hamilton Beach Single Serve Scoop Coffee Maker Save 16% Off

Hamilton Beach Single Serve Scoop Coffee MakerI''ve been a long time user of personal brewers two pod/cup type machines one well known, one lesser known. My problem with them both is that using your own coffee (I have my non pod favorite!) produces a mess and/or very weak coffee. They simply don''t hold the right coffee/water ratio to produce what I would consider an excellent cup of coffee.

I recently spied this machine and immediately liked that it was non proprietary, read the former reviews, looked at the price tag and was skeptical how good could it be for under $60 when its rival starts at $100? I finally brought one home and I''m sold! Using the "bold" setting it made even a decaf coffee nice and strong and it reminded me of the results that I get with my French Press full bodied, rich & flavorful.

I like that the basket for the coffee is nice and deep and easy to fill. The water resevoir is easily filled. It holds an ample 14 oz. of water you get out what you put in so playing with the measurement and grind of your favorite coffee takes some perfecting. The brewer starts immediately, the light goes out signaling it is finished brewing. It is a tad faster than the mini version of the more popular single cupper. The coffee comes out hot. I haven''t seen any issues with leaking, spraying, etc. Hamilton Beach was also thinking when the made the drip tray so that it flips over and fills the space to a smaller cup size.

I''d add some cons but really there isn''t anything that I dislike about this machine.

I just purchased this yesterday, so I can''t vouch for its longevity, but we have made several quick cups of coffee and tea using this and it works great.

Let me say that I am a caffeine addict. I prefer my coffee bold, am picky about my freshly roasted beans and prefer the taste of french press-made coffee. However, I am also not a morning person, and having to make a large cup of coffe in the morning while trying to get busy kids and a busy mom ready for school/work is quite a chore. Also, being the only coffee drinker in the house (my husband and oldest son like tea), my only option after drinking the first cup was to dump out the rest or refridgerate it and microwave it later neither were options I was thrilled about.

I didn''t want to pay the price of one of the larger Keurigs; nor did I have the counter space for that. We have a large Keurig at my office and, while I certainly appreciate being able to brew a fresh cup of coffee whenever I want, it''s a noisy machine, it has to be constantly plugged in to maintain its heating elements, and the coffee pods leave something to be desired.

I checked out the smaller, less-expensive Keurigs in the stores, but they felt very flimsy and I had read reviews about them breaking down frequently.

My HB One-Scoop feels sturdy, doesn''t take up much counter space, was reasonably priced and, best of all, makes a great cup of coffee. It took a few tries for me to determine how fine to grind my beans and how much of it to use, but after that, it''s been a breeze: You take your cup, fill it with water and pour that into the reservoir on top. Then, you take the scoop (which doubles as a filter), scoop out the amount of ground coffee you want, slap that scoop into a filter cup that is already sitting in the well, close the lid and press either the "regular" or "bold" button. The coffee drips quietly into your cup. Also, clean up literally takes seconds All you need to do is rinse out the scoop filter and filter cup in hot water.

You don''t have to plug this unit in until you''re ready to use it, and an adjustable shelf allow you to use a smaller mug or a larger travel-sized mug.

This comes with two scoops, so you can make more than one cup of coffee if you have company and not have to stick a wet scoop into your ground coffee. We have also used it just for hot water for tea and it works equally well with a rinsed out filter scoop and filter cup.

In addition, the scoop and water reservoir also has measurement lines for an 8 oz. and 14 oz. cup of coffee, although I do use extra coffee to get the strength I like.

I love being able to use my favorite coffees and not get stuck buying expensive, weak-flavored pods. I''m so glad I got this.

Buy Hamilton Beach Single Serve Scoop Coffee Maker Now

I am a coffee connoisseur. I have tried every machine from the Senseo to the Bunn Home Cafe (very expensive coffee brewer) to the French Press. I am tired of the "pod" machines because you just cannot get a good cup of coffee, even when you make your own pods. Therefore, I researched numerous coffee brewers and was contemplating getting a Keurig when I spotted this coffee brewer during a TV commercial. My first thought was that this is the ideal concept -scooping your own coffee -no pods or K-cups. I purchased this brewer and was determined not to like it because it wasn''t an "expensive" brewer. While it does have several inconveniences, like having to refill the water reservoir each time you want a cup of coffee, bottom line is it makes the best cup of coffee for a single serve coffee maker that I''ve ever tasted! It is a simple machine, but ideal for those who just want a delicious cup of coffee each time you turn it on. Another plus, the water gets very hot, unlike other machines I''ve used where the water comes out luke warm.

Read Best Reviews of Hamilton Beach Single Serve Scoop Coffee Maker Here

Single-serve coffee makers: you name it, I''ve owned it. Keurig, Tassimo, and Dolce Gusto: all of them are fun at first, but once the novelty wears off they''re nothing but proprietary machines serving up very spendy (and small) cups of coffee and contributing constantly to land fills. :(

I bought a "My K-Cup" for my Keurig, one way to cut down on the expense (and the garbage) but it gets to be kind of a pain to rinse and fill and cap that little thing each time. With Tassimo and Dolce Gusto, you''re really stuck. There''s no way to make your own T-Discs or Dolce-Gusto capsules.

I had a nice espresso machine, and purchased ESE pods, which took care of a lot of the mess that espresso machines tend to create. But once again, those really add up, and if all you want is just a good cuppa joe, then you also need a kettle (or electric kettle) to boil hot water to make an Americano.

Used a French press for quite a while, too...I still wasted coffee, though. And warmed up second cups in the microwave.

And then--VOILA! I found this machine! I had never heard of it until I stumbled upon it at our local Fred Meyer. It was on sale and I impulse-bought it on the spot.

This thing is just great. It''s really simple, so I wonder why no one ever thought of it before? There''s no noisy pump contraption (to break down later); it''s really just a regular old automatic drip coffee maker, but on a small scale, brewing one cup (8-14oz) at a time. Having the part that holds the grinds also be the scoop to scoop up the coffee is just brilliant. The little hook on the side to hang up an extra scoop: genius. One cup at a time. Nice and hot, everyone gets it the way they like it, no more leftover coffee sitting on the burner turning nasty, only to be tossed down the drain later. No carafe to clean (and de-scale and eventually break). I drink my coffee in the morning; my DH works third shift and drinks his in the evening: one regular cup, and then a big travel cup to go, and this machine does both sizes (and anything in-between) perfectly.

It''s a slender machine with a small footprint so it takes up very little space on my already-too-crowded counter, it contributes absolutely no garbage (not even paper filters), it is super-easy to clean, it is stainless steel and black and very modern and attractive, and you can use ANY kind of coffee you like, and make it any size you like, and any strength you like, and it is EASY!

You just can''t go wrong with this machine. I love it. :D

I did not buy this on Amazon but bought it at a brick and mortar after reading scores of poor reviews for every other type of single serve coffee maker made. I had given up on getting a strong cup of coffee from a "speed" brewer. After buying this machine I came home and read its reviews and again saw claims of weak coffee. My first 3 cups confirmed my fears. BUT my fourth cup I packed down the grounds with the back of a spoon and the cup was FANTASTIC. It was easily comparable to an actual cup from Dunkin''. This machine is well worth the investment at half the cost of any k-cup machine and the drawback of a weak cup is remedied with a very simple solution.

I am somewhat disappointed by the thoughtless way they were shipped. Each squeegee was shipped fully assembled in it''s own box with the packing slip inside which proved to me that someone had at least opened each package. They were in cardboard boxes measuring greater than five feet long and two feet wide and six inches tall. All four would have easily fit in one box! I''m curious as to what possible logic would have led you to ship them separately?
