Berkey Light Water Filter System

Berkey Light Water Filter System with 2 Black Berkey FiltersMy family got one of these about a year or two ago and I think everyone appreciates it. This thing filters water better than I could have imagined. After drinking mainly from this, I can taste the chemicals (or whatever''s adding the funny taste) even in bottled water.

The biggest problem is it''s going to make having to drink other water quite painful (well, the filters and the intensely slow speed of this can be a pain sometimes too).

I''d long heard stories from homesteading friends and off-grid families about how great the Berkey purifiers are, and now I know first hand. This purifier is considered the absolute best for off-grid and outdoor applications it filers bacteria, chemicals, and all kinds of gunk completely out or to below detectable levels. You can even filter dirty pond and lake water into useable water.

We are renovating a rural house, and gutted it completely no electric, no nothing. We bought the Berkey so we would have water when we camped out in the house. It is awesome we pump some water out of the well with a portable pump and run it through the Berkey, and it is crystal clear and completely pure. Our well hadn''t been pumped in five years and it was *really* dirty still, perfect water once we filtered it through the Berkey. It''s remarkably quick too 4 gallons an hour. We even put our gravity-shower water through it, just cause we can.

We bought the Berkey Light model with the LEDs in the base. I originally thought that a row of LEDs in the base of my water purifier was silly, but I have to admit, it''s pretty cool. The LEDs are on rechargeable batteries and it makes a neat little nightlight.

My son bought a website called [..], several years ago that sells both the British Berkefeld and Berkey brand water filters. As a way of becoming familiar with the product I researched the field fairly thoroughly. Although we sell filters from other manufacturers I was most impressed by the features of the Berkey.

I lived in Mexico for the last four years and discovered that even the Mexicans don''t drink the water but depend on bottled water for their drinking and cooking water. I used the Berkey water filter with the Black Berkey elements as my exclusive source of drinking water. I found it to be an excellent investment.

No system is perfect; every one I have researched has advantages and limitations. The Berkey seems to have the most advantages and the fewest limitations. We know the manufacturer of the filter personally and their research is credible. They are based in the USA.

The features of the Berkey that make it my first choice are:

It is relatively low cost between $220 for the small Travel Berkey to $350 for the large Crown Berkey (I gave several of these units to local orphanages who were spending much of their limited finances on bottled water),

It requires little maintenance I would clean my filter elements about once every two months,

The effectiveness of their filter although they do not equal the water quality of reverse osmosis or distillation, both of which I have also used,

The quality is very high.

They require no plumbing or electricity to operate, making them an excellent source of water in an emergency or in Mexico where both water and electricity can be intermittant. In the small village where I lived the water and electricity is on ccassion interrupted. I live by a lake and would get water from the lake to supply my Berkey and then myself with drinking and cooking water. For those living "off the grid" it is an important feature. If you don''t think having an emergency source of drinking water is important just ask some of the folks stuck without it after Katrina hit New Orleans.

They are very durable, being made either of stainless steel or Lexan in the case of the Berkey Light,

They are portable which makes them convenient to use while traveling, which I do a lot of in Mexico or to take with while camping or any extended activity in the outdoors.

The same manufacturer makes a portable bottle version which has all the same characteristics of the large Berkey in a 24 oz squeeze bottle.

I am death on bottled water which is simply one of the most ridiculous ways of providing drinking water to people that has been devised. You have to admire the marketing however. They have people walking into a gas station convenience store complaining about the high cost of gas, who go to the counter and pay more per gallon for a bottle of water then for the gas, without blinking an eye at the irony.

Any way, that''s my two cents worth.

Our web site is [..] and we would love to get some feed back on the products we offer and anyone''s experience with them.

The elements seem good for filtering water, but will not remove flouride. The parts are all very flimsy especially the plastic tap, which seems like it will wear out quickly. The lid is just a nylon cap that slips over the top. For $209 I expected more. BEWARE, you will NOT get the 2 extra elements as stated in the description. I e-mailed a representative of this company, he nicely told me it was a mistake by Amazon that could not be changed. Take that for what it''s worth.

We purchased a Berkey for our household. We have well water that has slight odor and taste. The water from the Berkey tastes great!

Unfortunately, the black filters fell apart-in less than 3 months! After checking the website and finding they were defective, I sent an email and was sent replacement filters and returned the used, broken filters. We were able to enjoy our filtered water again! That was, up until a few days ago when I found the replacement filter broken (just as the previous filter was). This set also lasted about 3 mos. much less than the websites'' claim of 3,000 gallons of water!

The company has a new "prorated warranty" for the filters and will replace them, possibly for free based on the amount of time you have had them, after you fill out some paperwork and send your filters back. Mine would be free, but after this experience, I do not have much trust in the company. Who has time for this every few months?

They admitted their product was defective, replaced it-with yet another defective product, combined with a customer service phone number that no one answers and no returned phone calls, I feel ripped off! I just wish I could get a refund and return their products, but nope, I''m outside the 60-day limit and they will not allow a refund on the defective filters either!

Truly Disappointed!

GE GXULQR Twist and Lock Kitchen or Bath Filtration System Replacement Filter
  • The GE GXULQR water filter can be easily changed with the "Twist and Lock" mechanism
  • Filters cold water supply at faucet
  • he GE SmartWater GXULQR replacement water filter reduces cysts, chlorine taste & odor, turbidity and sediment
  • GE SmartWater GXULQR Water Filter is a replacement cartridge for use with: GE GXULQ Full Flow Water Filtration System
  • You should replace the GE GXULQR Filter every 2000 gallons or six months, whichever comes first. You may need to replace your GE water filter earlier if your water has a bad taste or odor

Assuming you already have decent tap water, all this does is remove the chlorine odor. It''s a pretty mild effect, so unless you are already aware of a chlorine odor or have had your water tested to be high in chlorine with a pool tester, I''d skip it. Having said that I can tell a difference (did a blind test) and it''s dead simple to use after you install it.

Our local water utility changed to a cheaper treatment method that left our water tasting & smelling like a swimming pool.

This is a refill cartridge for the GXULQ unit and is effective at removing chlorine taste & smell for a reasonable cost and does not require a separate faucet. Our water is once again drinkable right from the kitchen tap. Water flow is slightly diminished but acceptable.

Installation is very simple. Check out the FilterDoctor video for a demonstration @

Overall very satisfied in the short time we''ve been using it ... jury is still out on longer term performance.

This is supposed to be an easy install to replace the filters. After three VERY DIFFICULT installs (very hard to twist and push in -got a shoulder strain two times), I have given up! Customer service is not well-informed and could not help me out.

We are moving to a highly-rated Aquasana filtration system (keeping my fingers crossed that this will have a happy ending).

We do not like the new design of these filters. They do not last as long and we suspect the company is trying to get more sales by making a product that is not as good as the original design. We don''t think it''s cost-effective any more.

It leaves water in the upper tank. It doesn''t allow all the water to go into the tank below so it doesn''t work as well as the first version.

The good folks at Zero Water changed the style of their filters. Mine shipped with a note inside that says they look different, but are improved and will fit. I happen to have the counter top dispenser that takes two filters. Inside of the fill area, there are two domes that screen out anything big and direct the water to the inside of the filter. The new filters do not have the same recess depth as the old filters and in order to use them, one must disassemble these domes and remove them. Haven''t noticed any degradation in performance yet, but would have been nice not to have to disassemble my unit to use the "new and improved" filters.

I''ve had the same issues as some people, it wouldn''t filter all the water. I tapped and squeezed the filter under running water and voila it works as it should. I am not sure if it''ll last as long as the old design, but I intend to keep it running till the gauge reads 006.

Love the unit. It does an outstanding job with really lousy local water in spite of the pretty hefty cost of the replacement filters.

Austin HealthMate HEPA Air Filter

Austin HealthMate HEPA Air FilterNote: this review is for the Austin HM 400 Black model.

This purifier generates three different levels of white noise, depending on which of three settings you use. It''s quiet on the first setting but the 2nd and 3rd highest are nice for masking background and outside noise when you need to sleep without interruption. Unfortunately, my HM 400 developed a minor rattle after about three years of moderate use.

I didn''t use it every day, nor did I run it at top speed very often. I mostly used it at night while I was sleeping and often I''d go for months without running it (e.g., during the warm months, I mostly relied on my fan and open windows for fresh air, and even when I used my air conditioner, I didn''t usually use my air machine, save for this past summer).

I was going to send the machine back for warranty repair back when it was still only a few years old, but the noise was only intermittent and ultimately went away after a brief while. Meanwhile, the power cord frayed because there was no rubber shield around where the cord came out of the cabinet. Very poor design! I had to repair that myself (and no the motor fluctuation issue is not due to a shorted or faulty power cord).

Anyway, after seven years of what was at mostmoderate use, the motor is now not working properly at all. It starts out normally but after a minute or so, it begins to vary speed until it slows down and stops working. I tried replacing the motor run capacitor after reading another Amazon review that documented a similar problem, but the machine is still varying its speed and stopping even after I replaced that part. Furthermore, there is no place on the motor to inject lubricant, unlike the motor on my old box fan (which I have have had and used almost daily for many years).

I am very disappointed in the poor quality of this machine. I took very good care of it, keeping it clean and replacing the expensive ($200) filter when it needed one. This thing should not have failed, considering how expensive it was and all the good press about it.

Be warned if you buy one and it breaks, you have to ship it back to Buffalo, NY. You can''t take it back to a dealer or authorized repair center for warranty service. And Austin is not clear about whether you have to pay the shipping and insurance even when you are within the warranty period, so get something in writing before you ship it back.

In any case, you are risking your money if you buy one you cannot assume you will get a quality product.

UPDATE: January 15, 2012 I did ultimately get some Zoomspout oil into the motor, even though it''s clearly not meant to be lubricated. That definitely helped. I was able to get this thing to run for at least a half hour without any problems (I probably could''ve run it longer without issues). But when I looked inside after each test run, I noticed some oil getting to places where it shouldn''t. Good thing I removed the filter, because I could have ruined that. I also notice a faint electrical burning smell in the motor housing after each run.

So, I decided to get a used HM 400 on eBay. I also got a couple of Austin Juniors (HM 200s). I now run one of the little ones quite a bit and it''s a nice machine.

The people at Austin Air have been helpful to me on the phone and online. But I wonder about the quality of their newer machines. Two machines I got from eBay are older, more than ten years old, and I think they''re better made than the one I already had, which I bought new in 2004. So, I think the issues with their products are probably more from the newer machines, which I think are made in China now.

One other note: the new filter I bought for the HM 200 (Austin Jr.) was defective and I had to return it after only about three weeks'' use. But my filter was exchanged, with free shipping and with no questions asked.

Why do I continue with Austin Air purifiers amidst such issues? Nothing beats them when they''re working properly. They make great white noise if you want it (you can use a quiet setting if you don''t want white noise), they really do seem to clean the air, they''re economical (other machines require about $15-$30 a month in new filters while Austin filters can last 3-5 years), and the older ones are pretty durable.

Blueair Replacement Particle Filter for Blueair 500/600 Series Air Purifiers Save 20% Off

Blueair Replacement Particle Filter for Blueair 500/600 Series Air Purifiers, Set of 3I ordered the Blueair filters from the Recording Store, and they were not shipped until 5 days after the order was placed which resulted in longer shipping time than from other retailers. They were genuine Blueair filters and arrived in good shape.

With regard to others complaints about not having the charcoal filter, that''s true, but after visiting the Blueair web site, it looks like Blueair has changed their manufacturing process and now include active carbon in the polypropylene portion of the filter.

I just purchased these filters are they do not match the picture. I have owned my purifier for a couple years now and have bought several sets of replacements. This is the first time that I received filters without the additional black carbon filter. The most recent set are just the white particle filter.

Yes, I know they sell several kinds of different filters, but I pulled up one of my old orders and clicked through to the product so I would expect to receive the exact same item. And not matter what, the picture shows the filter with carbon, which is definitely not what they shipped.

Hopefully this is just an Amazon glitch and they will sort it out quickly because the Blueair is a great air purifier. I''ve never had a problem with mine and it does a great job of cleaning the air.

First, the good pricing was best after searching the internet. Now, the bad Blueair seems to be cutting every corner it can think of. The surface area of the filter has been reduced so they colored the outside of the box black (previously it was white) so you don''t notice that it no longer fills the entire screen of your Blueair unit. You can see that now 10% of the edges are cardboard and not filter. Secondly, at night I can now see light shining from inside the Blueair unit, meaning the filters are now thin enough to let light through where the old one were not. Sad that Blueair felt they had to go this route. I would rather they raise prices and keep a producing a quality product.

I have lived with allergies for years and in that time tried several purifiers.

The Bluair is simply the best I have ever used. There has been a noticable reduction in airborn allergens in my place. I have even weened off my allergy meds. Using this in conjunction with allergy reducing pillow cases and mattress covers will improve your quality of life by 100%

The ONLY thing I wish the machine had was a UV light, but you can keep the negative ION crap.

The first sets of filters that I bought for my 601 came from Ireland and were exact and looked like they were worth the $75 or $90, whatever it was that I paid for them. Since then it seems like each time that I purchase filters they become a little smaller and a little cheaper looking.. but what are ya gonna do? It is still the best system that I have found and Amazon still sells them as inexpensively as anyone else.

Regarding the white cardboard showing through.. The black, ''Giant'' Sanford magic marker, I believe, is the one that will cover the edges of the cardboard in one pass.

I have a small (less than 600 sq. ft.) apartment, and the BlueAir 601, placed in a central location seems to do a credible job of cleaning the air throughout. It has 3 speeds. The lowest, you cannot hear it run. The middle, where I leave it most of the time that the apt. is shut up, is lightly audible but of the type noise you can very quickly ignore. Top speed is loud but I only use that periodically.. when cooking odors, for instance, are present. I don''t feel that it eliminates odors, with the regular particle filters, but it does seem to help.

As I only have my apt. closed up enough to justify using the 601 for half of the year, I use the filters for one year.. cleaning the machine and changing the filters at New Years, and cleaning the machine (with a quick pass over the dusty side of the filters) near the fourth of July, when I do other unrelated maintenance. The 601 is relatively easy to break down and vacuum. There are a few areas that I wish were easier to get to, such as the fan blades themselves and some of the wiring, but on the whole it''s not that tough a chore!

I would recommend the BlueAir 600 series to anyone contemplating an air cleaner, who would like to avoid buying several cheaper systems on their way to finding out they should have just ''bit the bullet'' and started with this more expensive but efficient unit to begin with...

Sprite Showers SL2-WH-R Slim Line Shower Filter Water Filtration

Sprite Showers SL2-WH-R Slim Line Shower Filter Water Filtration
  • For all showerheads and handles.
  • Installs between shower arm and shower head.
  • Low-profile shower design extends showerhead less than 1.5 inches.
  • Easy-to-open housing.
  • Dial-a-Date filter replacement indicator.

Purchased this model as well as chrome version from home depot. This model does not include shower head.

I live in L.A., a city notorious for dreadful water quality. After a recent house move my skin became super dry & itchy & developed a slight rash/hives sometimes after showering. My normally have great skin was parched & aged, my highlighted hair was dull & drained of colour. I chalked it up to moving stress until my hairdresser mentioned her clients up in the hills all complained of similar problems and recommended a shower filter.

Sprite brand was reviewed well enough, and I noticed an immediate difference; my hair felt like hair again, the fancy face moisturizers I''d bought were no longer necessary. When I wash my face in the unfiltered sink water instead of the shower I can feel a huge difference.

The bad newsSprite filters do not remove chloramine (the gross mix of chlorine & ammonia used in public drinking/bathing water), despite that, as stated, I saw a huge difference in the water quality so until I can find an alternative that removes everything, this is a great option.

I took one star off, as the unit I purchased (from home depot)was a tad hard to screw on properly, I still have some water dribbling out of the top or bottom. I expect I''ll need to replace it sooner than 6 months because of the severity of my water. I''m fine with that and the price considering how much it helped.

TriStar SB Steam Buggy Home Steam Cleaner

TriStar SB Steam Buggy Home Steam CleanerI am definitely glad I made this investment. The product truly cleans as shown on the infomercial. I am chemical-sensitive and this makes cleaning a health hazard for me. The Steam buggy provided healthy option to clean and sanatize my home!

I had purchased the Eureka HotShot prior to ordering the Steam Buggy, and though this product was effective, the resevoir was much smaller and would only steam clean for 3 to 4 min. and I had to refill 3 times more often with HotShot vs. Steam Buggy.

Steam Buggy is fairly light and easy to tote. The attatchments are much easier to change than on HotShot. At first use, SB was a little cumbersome, but one I got the hang of it, cleaning was a breeze!

An added benefit:

While cleaning, you inadvertantly get a sauna and facial at the same time! =)

At first I was skeptical about the Steam Buggy--I had watched the infomercial, and it just seemed too good to be true. I decided to give it a try and couldn''t have been more pleased. Using just water, the Steam Buggy has powered through all sorts of grease and gunk inside and outside my house with NO effort on my part. It even has an attachment for cleaning floors, which makes short work of my dogs'' muddy foot prints and my baby daughter''s food spills.

The only thing that I would change about it is that there is no way to quickly make the steam stop. Even if you turn it off, the steam and hot water continues to come out for a few minutes.

Buy TriStar SB Steam Buggy Home Steam Cleaner Now

I had read good things about Steam Buggy and it worked OK for the half dozen or so times I did use it. I used it to get off wallpaper but it did leak so I burned my hand with the hot water. Tightening the attachments didn''t help. I also used it to steam clean my stairs and it worked fine. I didn''t use it for about 4 months and when I tried to remove the cap, it was impossible to remove. I had to take it to my auto mechanic and even with his tools, he couldn''t remove it without breaking it. I''ve noticed other reviewers talk about the cap breaking. TriStar is impossible to get in touch with. I tried calling for days to no avail. I''m tossing Steam Buggy and buying the McCulloch MC-1275 Steam Cleaner since it got good reviews on this site. If you get a Steam Buggy, remove the cap when storing it, especially if you don''t use it often.

I bought this product about 8 months ago. I use it on almost everything. The worst thing I hate to clean is the toilet and the stove, because it involves a hole bunch of scrubbing. With the steam cleaner you just aime and wipe. I had a really dirty oven and I used the steam buggy and did a little scrub and then wiped and it was clean. It passed my own mothers inspection she is a clean freek. So overall it works great and saves money on buying cleaning products.

CRYSTAL QUEST® Countertop Replaceable Triple Fluoride Water Filter System

CRYSTAL QUEST® Countertop Replaceable Triple Fluoride Water Filter SystemI bought this filter to remove fluoride as well as chlorine, and all the other usual suspects in water. It definitely removes the chlorine, but I can''t say it removes the fluoride as I don''t have a test kit to check on filtered quality. I hope it does.

But it sure looks very attractive as well has a industrial almost nuclear looks to it. Not that I got it for its looks: I figured that it would be best to have a stainless steel housing rather than the plastic housing that might potentially leach out contaminates of their own.

I didn''t get this filter at Amazon but rather a other retailer online that was both cheaper and had free shipping though it took a while for me to get it.

The filter device i received from this seller has what seem to be the oldstyle cardridges in the two right most filters, not like the ones that Crystal Quest sells directly from their website. The stainless steel housing is good, topquality except the leak that existed on the leftmost filter housing due to the carbon block filter cardridge being longer than ideal for the container to seal tightly. After trimming the filter and reinstalling it sealed ok.

Some pictures of the product have been uploaded.

I had issues with this product right out of the box. One filter housing was leaking. I went to tighten it and it was already tight. Upon further inspection I noticed it was screwed on enevenly. I was concerned that once I was able to get it loose that it might be stripped and still leak. I emailed cyrstal quest directly as well as the seller/shipper. No response from either. After 2 days of elbow grease and wd-40 I was able to loosen it, re-screw it on properly, and get the thing working. Unfortunately, this is the worst tasting filtered water I have tasted. I was looking for a more convenient alternative to the gravity fed system I was using. I guess I''ll keep looking.
