I HAD TO PURCHASE THIS ITEM AT A HIGHER PRICE BECAUSE IT SEEMS AMAZON DIDN''T GET THE MEMO THAT IT WAS OK TO SHIP THIS PRODUCT TO CALIFORNIA. THE HAZ MAT ISSUE WAS RESOLVED SOME TIME AGO. I HOPE BY NEXT YEAR WHEN I WILL NEED A REPLACEMENT IT WILL BE AVAILABLE AT THE LOWER COST.

Maybe it is the housing for the filter, and not the filter, but this last time I replaced the filter, it was very tough to detach. It took a lot of strength to rotate and remove the filter. The same with installing the new one. Difficult to rotate and secure into place. The filter itself, once installed, is wonderful and lasts a year, which is a long time for something that gets used a lot everyday.

Mr. Coffee BVMC-SJX33 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker

Mr. Coffee BVMC-SJX33 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker, Brushed ChromeI replaced my Cuisinart with this about two months ago and found it to be as advertised and reflective of most of the other reviews. Attractive unit that brews an excellent pot of coffee. I retired 13 years ago from the Navy as a Senior Chief Petty Officer. I like a good cup of Joe that can be construed as a bit strong. My wife enjoys her coffee at a more civilized and nonnuclear level. This machine accommodates both. It does have one minor flaw in that the pot dribbles a bit when pouring. This small flaw can, however, be mitigated by thumbing open the lid while pouring your coffee.

This coffee maker works very well, especially as a replacement to two cheaper coffee makers that I had before that leaked, and the price is unbeatable.

This model SJX33GT is the simpler version of BVMC-SJX33GT; without the cleaning cyle option. This model does have the option of using the metal decanter which is sold separately. I intend to buy the metal decanter or replacement glass carafe, because every time I pour a cup of coffee; it drips on the counter. Other members of the household have commented on this, so it is not just how I am pouring it.

Except for this leaking problem, the coffemaker is ideal in everyway. It''s a shame.

This coffeemaker won Consumer Reports best coffee maker for a reason. It''s frickin'' awesome. I replaced a $100+ machine with this one and I haven''t missed the old one one bit. The brew strength option rocks.

Waring CMS120 Professional 12 Cup Programmable Coffeemaker Save 75% Off

Waring CMS120 Professional 12 Cup Programmable Coffeemaker, Black and Stainless SteelI am extremely pleased with my Waring Pro Coffeemaker. So pleased, I purchased one for my mother also...and she loves hers. I insist on a cone filter but found that most coffee makers have the flat kind. I wanted a viewable water level indicator. And I wanted a good hot cup of coffee. The waring does all this and more. I love that the basket holding the filter will not open unless you press the release button. That''s a wonderful improvement over my last coffeemaker which had a habit of the basket swinging open during brewing. The sleek look fits right in with my kitchen decor. I also like the blue backlight on the timer window.

The alarm that sounds when the coffee is ready is really not that loud, contrary to what some others have stated. I find it welcoming since I start my coffeemaker and then go about my schedule getting ready for work. The three beeps tells me I can come get my hot cup now. (The volume level of the beeps is about the same as a microwave) It''s also nice to know it will shut off after 2 hours though I usually pour my coffee into a thermos almost immediately after brewing and shut it off myself.

I looked at DOZENS of coffeemakers in seven stores and shopped online at Amazon, reading tons of descriptions before buying this coffeemaker. I am SO glad I chose this one.

I purchased this coffeemaker to replace our Mr. Coffee PRX23, ( vintage 1998 ) which had served us well over the years. When looking over the products currently available in stores, it seemed as if the art and science of coffeemaker design had gone backwards over the past ten years. Some of them looked to be three-handed affairs for loading the coffee, and others looked impossible to clean, like the water tanks on the current Cuisinarts. This Waring seems like it would be easy to clean, since you can lift the swing-out basket completely off the unit, and if your hands aren''t overly large you can reach down into the water reservoir.

The coffee tasted fine, although if I could add a feature, it would be an adjustable warmer for a little higher holding temp, since we usually add cream. Reviewer Ken mentions using the 1-4 cup feature to obtain a higher brewing temp, so I might try that with a full pot. The java connoisseurs all claim cone filters are superior to the basket type, but so far I haven''t noticed much difference in flavor. However, the cones are less prone to collapsing and letting grounds through, and they''re easier to lift out when it''s time to toss it. Just be prepared to pay about four times as much for cones over basket filters.

I don''t find the beep alarm at end of the brew cycle to be annoying. It only goes off once, and it''s helpful to know the coffee''s done if I''m across the house somewhere.

We like to keep a spare carafe on hand to rotate them for cleaning ( and in case we break one ), but so far I haven''t been able to locate where I could purchase one, even on Waring''s accessories web page. The Medalco 12-cup carafe looks like a candidate, although the inexpensive basic Mr. Coffee and GE carafes available at the local W**mart are about same height, so they might be worth trying first ( you can always return them ).

Had I not discovered this model, I probably would have gone with a Mr. Coffee CHX23.

Update: April 2012 After a year of daily use the warming plate has developed a pretty bad case of rust, which we never saw on any of our prior coffeemakers. Maybe the best materials weren''t chosen for the warming plate, ironic since so much stainless steel was used for the rest of the unit. Knocking off one star ( 4 to 3 ).

Update: September 2012 Well, my wife has expressed her disgust for the rust, and assigned me the task of researching a new coffee maker. So far Hamilton Beach 46201 looks interesting. This Waring CMS120 has disappeared from the Waring web site, like Waring is in denial they ever manufactured it. If you want an example of product support on the internet for small appliances done right, check out the Hamilton Beach web site.

PS: I wrote the review below over one year ago (12/23/10, today is 1/9/12). I still love the coffee maker overall (except for the 5 beeps). However, I just broke the glass carafe in the dishwasher about a week ago!! Not sure how it broke just sitting there, since it was broken before I removed it (maybe cheap or defective glass?), but it sure stinks. Anyway, the factory replacement carafe (CMS120CRF) made by Waring is "out of stock" everywhere on the internet. This is a problem...nnnnnneed.......coffffff....ffffeeeee!

I had planned to call Waring to confirm, and hopefully see if they could recommend a "universal" replacement carafe. Maybe not perfect but a similar size at least close enough to function. This is a major drawback for Waring customers who wants to buy a product that doesn''t have service parts available? The 10-cup Waring CMS100 carafe is available on Amazon but I cannot tell how large it is there are no measurements published anywhere. Even when measurements are given, they don''t make any sense. Just give us the overall diameter and height, the handle makes no difference. The Waring CMS120CRF carafe is exactly 6" round x 6" tall.

So yesterday I went to a dept store for some other things, so I took a measuring tape and while there I looked at & measured their coffee makers. Turns out that Mr Coffee makes a replacement carafe (#132451) used on many of their coffee maker models, they were on the shelf so I bought one and it fits this machine ALMOST perfectly! The measurements given for it on Amazon (8.8 x 8.1 x 9.1) don''t make sense...the glass portion is 6" dia and the height is 6" to the highest part of the lid (button).

The Mr Coffee replacement fits slightly loose (the dia of the surface that contacts the hot plate is smaller, allowing more movement side-to-side), but I used it today and it is practically as good as the original. The button on the lid is a little more rounded, but not enough to allow the button on the basket to extend down and stop the dripping. I''d give it an Afor fit and function, which is pretty darn good for something improvised. Not to mention it only costs $12 vs. $30 for the Waring factory replacement price (if you can find one in stock).

Review from a year ago (12/23/10):

I just received this coffeemaker, the Free Super Saver shipping only took 3 days, so it is nice to get it so fast before X-mas. I''ve only made one pot of coffee so far, and it was quite good. I enabled the 1-4 cup brew feature (you can leave it off if desired), which I never had on my old unit, and it''s nice since it heats the coffee up much more (the manual says that smaller batches of this size are not as hot since the brewing time is so short). I really noticed a big difference vs. my old unit, it''s practically as hot as McDonald''s.

But I also wanted to pass on some info that does not seem easy to find:

1) This unit uses No. 4 Cone filters (better than basket type). It came with a "permanent filter basket", but it''s seems to be made from plastic and not metal like you''d expect. I just use the brown paper filters, which are easy to find. The premanent filter will allow some fine sediment through into the coffee.

2) It uses 5 annoying loud beeps to signal that the brewing cycle is complete.

I was looking for a unit that did not use these silly beeps, since I use it in the early morning and the rest of house is still sleeping. They are quite loud and cannot be disabled as far as I can tell. But so far they haven''t awakened anyone!

It seems that most, almost all electronic coffemakers (i.e. non-manual) have this feature, so finding one without it is a challenge. Who wants this feature? I don''t see the appeal of it. Seems like more of a nuisance to me. I have read reviews for other coffee makers and many others also dislike this feature. But this is my only complaint so far, so I still give it 5 stars.

Finally found a coffee maker that makes hot coffee. Last year''s coffee maker was done (was brewing cooler coffee by the day and the warming plate was rusted) and so I went to a local store to try to find a different brand to try. It was awful, made two pots of lukewarm coffee and took it back. So I turned to Amazon, checked to see which coffee maker had the highest ratings and what other shoppers had to say about each one. I didn''t want or need one that kept water hot at all times. I decided against a thermal carafe. This pot seemed the obvious choice. It came quickly, arrived in perfect shape and it makes great coffee. It actually heats the water to a hot temperature before the water hits the grounds, doesn''t rely on the warming plate to provide the heat. I''ve owned coffee makers where the second cup was quite a bit hotter than the first.

As for concerns that other people have mentioned, the bright blue light is really a silly feature. Don''t know why it is so bright, but it is only on when the pot is on (this includes when you set it to come on at a future time). I find the beep much more annoying. The blue light might be silly but the sound it makes when it is done brewing is ridiculous. The only caveat I would offer against buying this machine is if someone is sleeping in a bedroom next to the kitchen the beeping WILL wake them up.

As I''ve only owned and used the Waring for two weeks, I can''t speak to its durability but so far it is the best coffee maker I have owned. A small pot of coffee (one large mug) turns out as good as a full pot.

We''ve only had this coffee maker one week and I can''t say enough about it. It makes an excellent, hot, flavorful pot of coffee. The products seems to be of very good quality. The basket is easily removed for cleaning (we use #4 filters instead of the supplied mesh filter). The pot pours well with no mess or drip. Measuring your coffee/water ratio is no longer a challenge; they recommend 1 scoop (supplied) of coffee per cup rather than the standard 2 tablespoons per 6oz of water which has never made sense to me. The beeping others have complained about does not bother us. We actually like being able to walk away and attend to other tasks knowing it will let us know when our coffee is ready! We''ve owned Keurigs, Chemex and other mainstream coffee brand pots and this is by far the best! If you''re looking for a value-priced, well-made, easy to use coffee maker that makes an excellent and hot pot of coffee, look no further. You will not be disappointed!

BISSELL ProHeat 2X Select Upright Deep Carpet Cleaner Save 4% Off

BISSELL ProHeat 2X Select Upright Deep Carpet Cleaner, 9400MI am a 52 year old widow with 4 grown children, and I''ve always had at least one dog; now with the kids gone I have 3 small dogs. This is the third carpet cleaner I''ve purchased over 15 years. The first was a Hoover, and though I thought it worked fine, advances over the years have made big improvements both in the machines'' ability to clean, and their design.

My second machine was the old version of this machine, which was 5 years old, and still working, but one of the kids borrowed it, and when I stressed the importance of cleaning after use, she went nuts and disassembled the thing to clean it (totally unnesessary), and it came back not working well. Obvious user problem, not the machine''s fault.

So, I ordered the 9400 Select, which arrived promptly from Amazon, quickly assembled it, and went to work in the bedroom. With 3 dogs, I clean the carpet every 3 months. My dogs are potty trained, but they are dogs, after all, and unlike me they can''t remove dirty shoes when they enter the house. Amazing what 12 little feet can track in to a carpet! So, between my normal use, and the dogs, I am always looking for the best machine.

I am going to post some pictures of the things mentioned, if this site allows... By the way, the room I did first and will base these comments on is a 12x15 foot bedroom, with very light colored carpeting. Some reviewers expressed frustration with the fuzzballs that can get left behind. Yes, this machine does that. It is old carpet, dog fur, and dirt. It is confined, slightly damp, and picks up easily. In this room there were maybe 12 chunks of this stuff, which were picked up as I went along. Not slimy, didn''t require toweling or gloves.

Next, one reviewer said the machine leaks dirty water spots all over. Again, the machine at the end of a pull does leave some water spots. As soon as you go over the pull again, they are sucked up, leaving no spots in the wake. When I am changing the dirty water tank and refilling the bladder, I always throw a towel under the machine for the few minutes I am away. This is a water/detergent based machine; of course some excess might drip out when it is stationary. All of my machines did this, so I don''t even think of it as unusual.

As for not knowing when the bladder is empty and needs refilling, I did not hear the "pop" some reviewers did, but I didn''t need to stop and check the level, either. I just paid attention when pulling the trigger for the cleaning mode, and if nothing was being sucked up when trigger is released and it is in suction mode, which one can easily see through the clear design, I know there is nothing going out, and it''s time to throw out the old water and refill the bladder. In this room, I take an hour or so to clean it properly. People who want a 10 minute clean are going to get exactly that. It takes months, sometimes years for carpeting to get dirty, but some folks want it to be cleaned in 10 minutes. I just don''t get that. The trick is that though this is a very easy machine to use, the key is in going SLOWLY, and allowing the machine to do what it was designed to do. Get the fibers wet/soapy; then let the brushes get down deep, suck up the slop the machine cleaned, then turn the dial to rinse only (I always do this, though many don''t, because in my opinion detergent residue left behind becomes a magnet of sorts for dirt once the carpet is dry). In any case, to do the job right, this room took me about an hour. Time well spent, with excellent results. Cleanup is a breeze. Take the bladder/ takeup container, empty it, then pour water through the take up holder to get any remaining dirty water out. This takes all of about 1 minute.

If my trend of getting a new cleaner about every 5 years continues, and in that time I use the machine 20 times, this is a bargain.

I am thrilled with the results this machine gives, and highly recommend it. I guess the only other issue I could address is the storage, and I do understand that it is slightly bulkier than a traditioner vaccuum cleaner, and if one doesn''t have a spare closet it could be a problem. In this house, it just rests under the basement staircase, ready and waiting to be called into action again.

I have been through the ringer with carpet cleaners and stain removers. We have a dog that vomits about once a week. Unfortunatley, he does not do this on our wood floor, which comprises most of our house, but rather he prefers to stain our carpet. I think it is the law with him.

Anyways, I had no luck with the SpotBot I purchased so I was a little reluctant to try another Bissell Product. I saw the good ratings for the 9400 and figured I would give it a shot.

It seems to have everything one could need on a steam cleaner and it even includes Scotchgard Protection. I tried the Bissell on a tough stain that had set in for a couple of months. Nothing could get it out not even the Rug Doctor from the supermarket.

At first the Bissell did not totally get it out. So I tried it again with the hottest water I could get and heated the water with the built-in heater. Sure enough it got it out like a charm. I think Chem-Dry will have to find another customer now!

Steam cleaners are kind of a pain to use with all the filling of tanks and solutions and they usually soak your carpet. But I finally found something that can get up just about any stain and leave my carpet clean as a whistle. We have a winner!

I''ve been wanting to steam clean our carpets in our house for a number of years now. We had them professionally cleaned before moving in (8 1/2 years ago!!). Three kids, a dog, and a cat later have reduced our carpets to what I thought, was their last legs. The carpets are probably 12 years old (they were not new when we moved in, I am guessing here).

We have carpeting in our kitchen, our kitchen table rests on the carpet. You can imagine how dirty they look(ed) after years of spilled milk, cereal, wine, ketchup, etc... We had planned on ripping them up and putting in tile or Pergo in the next few years.

So this past week our dog gets sick and really puts me over the edge here. I decide to rent one of those "Rug Doctors" at the grocery store. However, I realize that it will take days for me to clean all the carpets and I really don''t want to have to shuttle the Rug Doctor back and forth to the grocery store (about 15 20 mins away). On a whim, I check out the reviews on Amazon and find that the Bissell 9400 is the real deal. There is even a reviewer mentioning his sick dog.

So I decide to go with the Bissell.

It was very well packaged, little boxes for all the accessories (there are a ton of them). There is even a mesh bag full of various cleaners (wish I knew that before I bought $60 worth of cleaners!!). The Bissell goes together in about 10 minutes (including the time it took to locate my screwdriver).

I used the Bissell "Pet Strength" cleaner, taking two bottles to do two rooms (wayyy more than is required, but these were dirty carpets!!).

It is a slow process, you have to push the cleaner forward, depressing the trigger. Move slowly, then pull back with the trigger depressed. A few passes more will remove the moisture.

I didn''t count the number of times I had to empty the resovoir and fill the water & cleaner. It certainly was a breeze to do.

This first pass took me some 3 hours to do, but was well worth it. I am willing to bet that this will go faster now that they have been recently cleaned!

I noticed a huge difference before they even dried!! The carpets were no longer soiled, almost all the food stains had been removed, the nap was much fluffier. I pulled out about a large handfull of cat/dog/human hair that the brushes spit up( This is normal and nothing to worry about, its much better in the trash than ground back into the carpet).

Once they dried (overnight) and after a pass with our Kirby, they looked incredible!!

My daughter walked barefoot on the cleaned carpet and on one in our family room (that is scheduled for next week). She said the clean one was a lot more cushier.

When I walk in the house now, I am greeted by a nice scent (there is a scent in the pet-strength cleaner) and a very clean-looking carpet!

I intend to clean our furniture as well as the rest of all the carpets. I''m beginning to believe that this will help with our allergies too....

If you are on the fence about this, go for it! You will not be sorry.

Oh, I mentioned above and will restate it. Do NOT use this like a vacuum cleaner, pushing and pulling at a fast clip. Go slow!! You will reap the benefits..

Update: 8 Apr 2006

Still very happy that we got this. Last weekend I completed the cleaning of all the original carpets in our home. I had to do all of our Master Bedroom in 3 passes (moved furniture around) because the pets loved to sleep under the bed, beside the dresser, etc). Before last weekend, the only "Original Carpet" uncleaned was the Master BR. The difference in smell when walking into the Bedroom was noticeable. (Before cleaning). We never noticed the pet odor because we were ''used'' to it throughout the house. Once I cleaned the rest of the house, the odor in the remaining room stood out.

After cleaning the Bedroom, I''ve noticed a very signifigant impact (for the better) on my allergies. Cleaning the carpets under the bed where we sleep made a huge difference.

On another note, I cleaned a pet stain (from where our dog was sick) in my daughter''s room. The carpet in there is only 6 months old. I couldn''t believe the hair it picked up! I originally thought I could bypass all the new carpeting, but am in the process of cleaning all the new carpeting too!

OK, in case you haven''t guessed it... This was by far the best $250 I''ve ever spent!

I didn''t think a cheap, inexpensive, household extractor would do a good job, but I was wrong. It does a great job. The spinning brissles do the trick, they really spin fast. It scrubs stains out better than a washing machine can get stains out from clothing. My friend uses this thing for house cleaning and she has been told many times that she does a better job than the carpet cleaning companies around our area. Reviewers mentioned the exhause being a design flaw because it breathes into the carpet. It is not a flaw, the warm air assists in drying the carpet. The turbo paw is fairly well built, it doesn''t spin as quickly as the main brissles but it does much better than just a regular scrubber. I think peoples'' expectations of the turbo paw are set high after seeing the floor extractor in action. I thinks it''s great esspecially for $225. Can''t top it.

ONE TIP: After shampooing, you may want to go over the carpet one final time to get any excess water from the carpet, turn your heater OFF. The heater draws from the 12 amp motor which steals power from the sucking mechanism.

I bought my ProHeat a few years ago and it is by far one of the best home purchases I have made. I use it all the time and it really does keep the carpets looking clean and new. We have pets and a toddler and there hasn''t been a single stain it could not get out.

Very easy to use...just like vacuuming. It cleans so much better than the rental cleaners. With what I paid to have my carpets professionally cleaned twice a year, I paid for it in six months.

Crane 2.1 Gallon COOL Mist Humidifier Save 14% Off

Crane 2.1 Gallon COOL Mist HumidifierOkay so this is my third cool mist humidifier. This one is worth its weight in gold! The water lasts several days when on the middle setting, there is no filter, it is easy to clean, and it is silent. I bought this with just one review. I was cautious but the review was glowing, and I have used it for 3 months and love it. You do have to use this on the counter instead of the floor because there is not a high speed fan that will push the air up. You can adjust the beak to any direction and direct the air flow. The reservoir is a little hard to fill but just take off the beak and it will balance in the tub.

I purchased this unit, as well as another Crane tear drop styled unit which is highly rated, around the same time and have been using both in different rooms. This one blows that one away. It has great output, its fairly quiet, it doesn''t leave crazy condensation on the table it sits on, and it has a good tank capacity. See my review for the crane tear drop. It has a design flaw to it which is annoying. Now, I have only had this one a week, but I can see it out performs others I have had, and currently have. There are better units for more then $120 dollars available, but in the $60 price range, as best as I can tell, this is the one you want.

A couple reviews mentioned that the unit was not functioning properly and I thought that has to be an exception. The unit I bought malfunctioned within 1 (one month). I am returning the unit for a refund and am not going to be buying it.

I live in Indiana, and the air in my house is very dry in the winter. Dry itchy skin, sinus trouble, constantly getting shocked when touching metal, etc. I''ve been shopping online for a GOOD humidifier for over two weeks. I have purchased two Holmes units over the years (different models-JUNK), and got terrible results, and threw them away after using only one winter. I decided to do more research this time, and I''m glad I did. This unit was more expensive than other models, but I was willing to pay more for better results. I unpacked it, leafed through the very simple instructions, filled it with water, plugged it in, and turned it on. A short time later, I could honestly tell a difference in the room humidity level. Again, the air in my house is dry this time of year, so I left it on high for the entire first tank full. This morning after showering; no itchy skin, and I am no longer getting shocked every time I touch metal, or pet my dog. This unit is incredibly quiet-it makes no noise at all! I was surprised that one tank of water lasted as long as it did on high output. I think I have a keeper here-this unit is a winner! It is obviously much better than other units I have purchased in the past. I highly recommend this humidifier.

  • High quality filters for superior performance
  • NSF listed storage tank
  • Automatic Shut-Off Valve eliminates waste by closing the feed line when the tank is full
  • Chrome, long-reach, Lead-Free faucet. (Meets CA req.)

When I installed the carbon filter cartridges in their housing I found the O-rings did not seat properly. I contacted the company''s online help desk about this and they replied by asking for my order number which I gave them. They never replied, even when I made another inquiry. So without any advice from the company and through trial and error I finally discovered the problem with the O-rings and fixed it only to discover that the pressure tank leaked around the tube connection at the top. I tried several ways to stop this leak but I only diminished the flow, not stop it. I finally took the pressure tank from the system I was replacing and connected it to the Purenex system and it did not leak. Everything seems to be working fine, now, but it would have been nice to have someone from Purenex advising me. I would have sent the tank back for a replacement but since I have one that works for me I decided not to. The system itself has good flow and good pressure at the faucet and seems to be working great. I give it three stars for poor support.

I used my Brio this past weekend to tackle a few tasks I had been long avoiding....grime in my shower and cleaning my roman shades.

The shower grime came off in minutes....a task I had assumed I couldn''t accomplish with the cleaning supplies I owned. I decided to use the Brio and

it was fast and efficient....

My roman shades I wanted to clean but did not want to take down....way too much effort and time...so instead I steamed them while they were up, and the Brio

did an amazing job!!

So happy with all it can do.....

Love this unit. Steam cleaning has my apartment so much cleaner than the chemical route. Only product improvement i could suggest is a retractable electric cord.

After the holidays were over, I was able to get a hold of their customer service and they had me try a couple things before they were going to provide me assistance in getting it returned to a service center. One suggestion actually worked. From there I was overall very pleased with the performance. The controls were very easy to use, there was a wide assortment of attachments and the adjustable dial for steam pressure was very useful. I ran it for a few hours that same afternoon and no problems were encountered.

I can''t give it any higher rating than this right now. Judging by appearance and set up; it looks good, the attachments went together very easily and there wasn''t anything complicated in putting the water in and turning it on. Unfortunately I don''t know how well it cleans yet. I don''t want to really say I hate but I can''t really say I love it either. This will be a good test to see how their customer service performs from here.

Item works, but not for sure how long. The unit that they shipped is the old style that goes out after about a year. Let''s hope this one lasts a little longer.

The unit they picture is the updated/newer unit that supposedly corrected the bad caps/fuse ballast problem with these, but what they sent was the old style unit. I had to get the filter up and running so installed this where the last unit that looked identical was and lasting 16 months.

Just beware that the photo they use is of the newer units, but what they shipped me was the old style unit. It was indeed new, but not the later style.

Works and lights bulb so far, but it''s only been a few weeks.

Item arrived quickly and in great condition. Replace the old one with this and it worked like a charm. The only thing to note is that this doesn''t come with a power cord. If you are purchasing to replace an older model, just make sure your power cord isn''t hardwired into your box. If it unplugs, you can just use the old power cord. If it doesn''t, you''ll need to order the corresponding power cord for this unit. Very happy with this purchase!

This product was exactly as advertised. The delivery was right on time and the price was much better than I could have purchased it for locally.

My only reason for the 4 star rather than 5 star rating is because the unit as manufactured is not expected to be reliable for more than 2 to 3 years. This is the information I received from our local dealer before purchasing on-line. In any event, I am very satisfied with this vendor and their service.

Bodum Santos Stovetop Glass Vacuum 34-Ounce Coffee Maker Save 33% Off

Bodum Santos Stovetop Glass Vacuum 34-Ounce Coffee MakerThe Bodum Santos Vacuum Coffeemaker makes excellent coffee. Smooth, full flavored, hot. This model requires more interaction than a percolator or drip coffeemaker. If you''re not willing to participate in the coffee making process, don''t purchase this coffeemaker. However, the end result is well worth the few extra minutes required. Some tips that may be useful:

1.) Use coarse grinds to avoid clogging the filter;

2.) When placing the upper chamber on the lower carafe, make sure there is a good seal between the two globes, as this will help in the vacuum process;

3.) Always make sure there is at least a centimeter or two of water remaining in the lower carafe, otherwise the carafe will crack;

4.) Allow the water and grinds to mix together in the upper chamber for a minute or two before removing from heat source (coarse grinds produce a weaker flavor compared to finer grinds, so allow a bit more time for the water to extract the flavor of the beans while in the upper chamber);

5.) Remove the entire coffeemaker from the heat source and carefully place on a cool surface, keeping in mind that the coffeemaker will be top heavy and hot;

6.) If the coffee remains in the upper chamber and doesn''t completely drain to the bottom carafe, return the entire coffeemaker to the heat source again for a minute, then remove again to a cool surface;

7.) Purchase a good thermos or insulated carafe to transfer your remaining coffee to (Nissan Thermos is a good brand, check out reviews on Amazon.com).

8.) Coffeegeek.com and Coffeekid.com have additional information on vacuum brewing.

Pros: Coffee is hot, full-flavored, and not bitter. The process is fun. Clean up is easy, if done soon after brewing. Affordable from Amazon.com when on sale. Reusable filter. Coffee is hot, full-flavored, and not bitter. (It''s worth mentioning twice.)

Cons: Capacity is only 8 cups (32 oz.). Filter can sometimes be unreliable. Uses more grinds than average peculator or drip models. Extra caution needed when using, as most of the coffeemaker is made of glass. Instructions are scant.

Five stars for a wonderful product.

I purchased my unit about a year ago from Amazon.com and after about a month of frustration with the filter constantly clogging, I put it out of sight (out of sight = out of mind). When I could get it to work properly, it was great because the coffee tasted the way it smelled wonderful. But, it was simply not worth the time and effort to get one pot out of 15 to brew properly. I tried burr grinders and the inexpensive type grinders. I tried coarse grind, medium grind, fine grind and everything in between with no success.

About two-months ago I remembered I had the Bodum Coffeemaker and so I decided to revisit the task of trying to make a ''perfect cup of coffee and it worked perfectly!

I use the Bodum Coffeemaker almost every day now and it works as advertised 100% of the time. I have developed a system that works for me by taking suggestions from several of the reviews from Amazon.com and from some helpful advice from a Barnies'' sales representative about how to store and use coffee beans.

The one thing that I was probably doing wrong the first time was that I listened to a friend who thought he knew about how to store coffee beans. If you want to go from coffee beans to coffee dust, freeze the beans or keep them in the refrigerator I guarantee you that this will work. It does not matter what your grind setting is on your burr grinder because you will get so much dust that the Bodum filter will clog and coffee cannot get sucked back into the lower chamber.

I now keep my coffee beans in an airtight container in the pantry, grind them as needed and then follow these additional procedures to get great tasting coffee every time.

Make sure the seal is clean and dry and the top is pressed firmly down onto the lower unit. I use a gas burner at a medium-high setting and do not use a diffuser. I think that the diffuser may be recommended to help keep the handle cooler in case you do not center the pot over the flame. Also, be sure you put the lid on top of the upper unit. And, do use caution, because the handle does get very warm.

I keep the burner on the same heat setting for 30 seconds after all of the water (except what is below the tube) goes into the upper chamber. There is still a little water left below the tube in the bottom chamber that will continue to boil. Turn the burner off after about 30 seconds, remove the upper chamber lid, and you can do one of two things at this point. If you do not want to move the coffeemaker while the top is full, just leave it on the burner and in a couple of minutes, the burner grate will cool enough to create the vacumm in the lower unit. If you want to cut a minute or two off of the procedure, use a oven mitt to hold the handle with one hand while you use the other hand to ''stablize'' the top and move the coffeemaker to an adjacent cold burner.

I can actually hear air being sucked into the lower chamber after all of the liquid has been removed from the upper chamber, which takes less than 10-15 seconds once it starts. I then use an oven mitt to hold the handle, remove the top chamber and put it in its neat holder, and pour my eight cups of great tasting coffee into my twenty-five year old Stanley stainless steel thermos. I now have great tasting coffee all day long.

After the top and bottom units have cooled, I remove the filter and clean both chambers being careful to not bang them against anything hard. The glass is thin, which it has to be, but seems pretty durable.

I give the unit five stars because I am the one who caused most, if not all, of the original problems by improperly storing the coffee beans which resulted in a lot of dust when they were ground. The taste of the coffee made by this unit warrants five stars.

I cannot rave enough about this treasure made in Copenhagen. I have used every conceivable type of coffee maker in the past, but this one is simply the best I have ever used. It is beautiful to look at, very easy to use and clean, and makes the best cup of coffee I have ever tasted. I ordered the electric version of this brand, but when it arrived, it had a defect, so I returned it immediately. I am so happy I didn''t order the electric one because it was twice the amount of money that I paid for the non-electric one. I am going to tell all my friends about it--unfortunately you can''t buy it in any stores, only through Amazon.com. Congratulations on carrying this absolute gem of a coffee maker!! This is really the way to make the best cup of coffee on a machine that costs less than $1000 dollars. I''m not kidding. When this device works correctly, it give you the best tasting, clearest (no sediment) and prettiest cup of coffee you have ever tasted Even Using The CHEAPEST Beans or Grinds!

PROBLEMS:

1. The spring loaded filtering device, although increadibly simple and easy to use and maintain did not work consistantly for me. Sometimes I would get a lot of sediment, sometimes crystal clear rich brown red coffee (perfect). Sometimes the top globe would drain completely (as it should) and sometimes only half way. I tried various grind coursness, filter adjustment, etc and never could get consistancy.

2. The handle needs to be longer and rounder. It is too short for the weight and feels awkward in the hand because of the way the bottom is cut out and shaped in general.

3. Glass broke on the bottom of the 2 pots. I left it on the stove and boiled out all of the water. 2 pots of coffee later a thin long crack developed leaking the coffee out on to my burner. Would like to see a little thicker glass.

4. Instruction book too skimpy especially for a coffee making technique that few have been exposed to.

5. The plastic stand for the upper glass globe should have a wider base to prohibit tipping.

GOOD THINGS:

1. The glass, although thin is pretty durable (in spite of it cracking on me after leaving it on the burner too long). It is really beautiful glass, even rings when you dry it with a microfibre cloth! Has a high clarity and shine.

2. It is easy to clean. Comes apart in seconds, rinse out, dry (works best with a microfibre cloth I found) and your done. I leave it out because I like the looks of it and people always ask what the heck it is!

3. It is easy and fast to use. Takes a few minutes to dump in the coffee and water (in separate glass globes/pots) and put together and start the coffee making process. It takes a few more minutes to have the coffee sucked into the lower pot and be ready to pour. Probably a 10 minute process total.

4.It''s inexpensive! 40 bucks!

5. Makes the one of the best cup of coffee you''ve ever had even using the cheapest beans or grinds! In fact, I made better coffee at times using cheap grind over using custom roasted fresh expensive beans ground right before I put them in the pot. My suggestion, buy Kroger''s brand standard beans (right from the grocery store at about $2.50 a pound), grind them right before you''re ready to make your coffee and enjoy.

Summary, Bodum needs to tweak this product a bit. I''m searching on-line for another brand of vacuum pot today to replace my broken $40.00 bodum so I can compare.

(TOP 10 REVIEWER)(COMMUNITY FORUM 04)(#1 Hall OF FAME REVIEWER)I live with a former barrista and coffee guru. He makes the coffee in our house, and he has that magic touch. According to my bean baron, the Santos is the best coffee maker he''s ever used. I tend to agree; the Santos gets the most out of the bean''s essence and preserves the delicate oils and acids that make for a superb cup.

Some caveats with this pot: this pot is made of GLASS. That''s a good thing--plastic is less desirable as it tends to grab coffee oils onto its surface. Glass is about as inert as you can get. So, being GLASS, this pot requires care in use. It is a bit top-heavy and the tube leading to the lower chamber is apt to chip if you are careless with the spring-held filter device, which separates the upper brewing chamber from the lower serving and heating pot.

And this is a stovetop device, requiring attention to the flame or temperature of your electric element. No plug-and-play here, so this is best for entertaining or weekend enjoyment. For weekdays, I stick with our electric filter machine, which the Guru sets up for me the night before so I can stumble into the kitchen at dawn and press a button to get my caffeine dose. But...when we want exquisite gourmet coffee, this is the one we pull down from the shelf.

Sprite Ultimate Filtered Showerhead in Chrome
  • Removes chlorine, dirt, odors and more
  • Uses filter cartridge model SLC
  • One replaceable filter cartridge inside
  • Attaches to existing shower arm
  • Single power spray

To the person who wrote the first review, of course this shower head is chrome plastic. What do you expect for $24 ($35 retail price)? If you want something made of metal you''re going to have to spend more than $24-$35, that''s just common sense.

Immediately after my first shower using this product, my hair was noticeably softer, much softer. I did NOT notice any drop off in water pressure either, it works great. My hair felt like I had used conditioner but I didn''t use any. My brother loves it as well. It continues to work well after months of use. The water hitting your skin also feels very soft and luxurious. Definitely helps with dry, cracked, or itchy skin. It does a great job of filtering the chlorine, 99% according to this online review:

Although this product does not claim to remove chloramines, it apparently does according to this same review: (just google shower filter reviews) Apparently a lot of water municipalities are switching over to chloramines instead of straight chlorine in the water.

I did A LOT of research and the only two types of shower filters that truly remove 99% of chlorine in the water are the Sprite filters and Vitamin C filters. However, all the Vitamin C filters are made in China, break easily, and run out after only a few weeks of use according to reviews on Amazon. This product does not remove VOC''s (volatile organic chemicals) but I don''t think any shower filters truly do. I could be wrong. Either way, the most dangerous chemicals in the shower water by far are the chlorine chemicals. So what you could do is combine this product with another shower filter that is supposed to remove VOC''s, since the ones that do claim to remove VOC''s are horrible at removing chlorine despite their claims.

This product comes at a great price, and outperforms any other more expensive shower filter. The only thing I don''t like about it, is that it does not swivel up as much as my old nickel plated shower head. But it still works fine. Sprite filters are the best. The 6 month replacement cartridge costs about $17 on amazon, so this shower head with one included is a great deal. Was easy to install, no tools needed.

Also, Sprite claims on the website that the flow rate is 1.75 GPM. It comes with an optional disk that restricts the flow to 2.0 GPM. Apparently Sprite made a mistake or it''s false advertising! Either way, 2.0 GPM is better than the standard 2.5 GPM in regular shower heads. This is still a great product if you want an efficient shower head with a great filter all in one.

I am a verified purchaser, unlike other. 6 months and chucking due to no major difference in water quality. See update comment below. • The GE FX12P Water Filter set includes two Activated Carbon Block Water Filters
  • Activated Carbon Block Pre-Filter and Granulated Activated Carbon Post-Filter
  • Should be replaced every 6 months

With my water, these last about 5 months before they get too slow and noisy. I don''t see any issue with the made-in-China aspect. If anything they produce water faster than the older models, but I didn''t really time it. My well water has enough iron that I''d notice if these didn''t work well, and that''s not a problem. Nice that I can get them at Amazon Prime is easier than driving to Big Orange at times.

One tip when changing the set, move the old Post filter to the Pre filter position, and just put the new filter into Post. I''ve been doing this for about 5 years and it works fine. Saves some money. No doubt the manufacturer would say it''s a bad idea, but my measure is the water quality, and it''s great.

My membranes seem to last forever, but maybe that''s because I have no chlorine in my water.

Barrier Grand Water Pitcher
  • The programable electronic microprocessor indicator determines the exact lifetime of the filter cartridge and lets you know when to replace it.
  • Barrier filter cartridges lasts more than 2x longer than the competition (95 Gallon Vs. 45 Gallon).
  • The pitcher stores 1.9 quarts (8 cups) of purified water
  • Pitcher is constructed of high-quality plastic, andis Designedto fit the door of refrigerator.
  • Filters water of: active chlorine, organic and organochlorine impurities, pesticides, petroleum products, Lead, Mercury, Copper, Benzene, Cadmium, Chloroform and Surfactant.

I bought the the smaller Premia pitcher for myself and liked it so much that I bought this one for my mom & dad. Everyone needs to help keep plastic water bottles out of the earth and for them, they save a lot as well which is good since they''re on a limited budget. Water tastes great and the filter lasts twice as long as the competition. The timer on the top helps as well so they don''t have to think about when they need to replace the filter. The timer tells them. Great product!

I have had a Barrier Grand Water Pitcher in my family''s home for a few months now. We had made the switch because we wanted a cheaper alternative to constantly consuming expensive water bottles. We have been very pleased with the ease of use, and water quality. The filter seems to do a very good job at removing the impurities from our tap water. There is a very distinct taste difference from the water that goes into the container and what comes out. I would say Barrier has done a great job at putting a quality filter onto the market. We have tried Brita, and Pur in the past; they had disappointed us in terms of water quality. Further we found they were expensive, and their cartridges seemed to need replacing a lot more often. Not the case with Barrier, we go through one cartridge every 2-3 months (the lcd monitor does a good job at reminding us). This was just our experience, but for what it''s worth I''d highly recommend to any of my friends/family in the market for a solution to purify tap water.

This is the second one of these we have bought. The water is better and the flow is good until the filter clogs after several months. The unit tends to leak where the two pieces come together around the filter. I wrap a lot of Teflon tape around the threads and tighten it more and it is okay. The last unit finally cracked in two after several years because I had to over-tighten it to keep it from leaking. It can be difficult to change the filter because it is hard to get leverage on the two pieces to twist them apart.

I like this filter because it''s easy to install, and easy to change out the cartridges. The water pressure is barely affected. And since it''s chrome, it''s much nicer looking than some of the others that are clear or white. My only problem is it doesn''t filter our Los Angeles water as effectively as the best filter we have had for that purpose, which is the VitaShower SF-1. We have highly treated water here, containing both chlorine and chloramine. The Sprite filter doesn''t reduce these elements as effectively. It seems that the water pressure is inversely related to the effectiveness of the filter, though, because when you use the VitaShower, the pressure is cut by at least 1/3. The Sprite may work just fine in other areas where the water isn''t so chlorinated.

Bionaire BU498-U Portable Ultrasonic Humidifier Save 35% Off

Bionaire BU498-U Portable Ultrasonic HumidifierWhen I first placed the unit in the room, it ran whisper quiet. After two weeks of constant nightly use, it "rattles" when misting; the seal between parts no longer holds because water now pours through the juncture of parts. I exchanged it. Again, the unit worked well at first, but now after three months, the "rattle" and leakage is evident. I am thinking that regular use wears the parts too fast, maybe if I only used it once in a while. At the very least, I do like the design and the ease of set up. It may even be worth a round of replacement parts.

Pros: quiet, quiet, quiet > had it for three months still quiet; two mist settings high and low > does a good job for a small room at night; simple to operate > on/off, high/low; has a blue light at the mist spout which acts like a night light; because of the "Cons" I have been using it less > looking into buying another humidifier; water basin easy to clean > no nocs or squeeze space; to clean reservoir > few drops of peroxide, shake, shake, shake release and let air dry or rinse and use immediately.

Cons: pain in the you know where to remove and snap reservoir contain in and out > need serious finger gripping power to pull reservoir up and out then need ESP to snap it back in > for some reason it does not go back in the same way it came out; bottom fill > reservoir-release-cap has three delicate little pegs that go into the container opening which needs a twist-turn to lock back in place > if any of the pegs snap there goes the humidifier.

Neutral: at low setting water reservoir lasts 9 hours, on high about 7-8 > I usually sleep 6 hours a day so this fine for me.

Note: humidifiers that draw air from the bottom > place a raised-metal-wire-net rack underneath device to elevate device to allow better air intake exit circulation.

I have had it for 2 weeks, so I can''t speak for the longevity, but it''s very compact, good for use on an office on your desk. My only complaint so far is that on the low setting, the tank only lasts for about 5-6 hours, so you have to fill it twice for a typical work day. However because it''s so small, it''s not a big effort to carry it to sink to fill it. The only other downside, which doesn''t matter if you are using it on a desk, is that if you are planning to use it in your bedroom at night, it does emit a bright little blue led light when on, which might irritate you in a dark room, but I guess you could cover that up with duct tape or something. It does make a little bit of noise, but not enough to bother me. Oh, and it wouldn''t last all night, so I find myself when I get up to pee in the middle of the night, turning it off b/c it has run out. So, in summary, good for office desk, not for bedroom overnight.

In the beginning it worked exactly as stated in manual: 6 hours on 2nd setting and 10 hours on 1st setting. After 2 weeks it made a lot of noise and did not blow any mist at all. There is one part which collects mineral deposits which I tried to clean with supplied brush. I cleaned it for half an hour and could not get it off. I used vinegar, but it did not help much. I have noticed that other humidifiers do not even have that part, but blow the air directly, while this one redirects it. Also, the light is annoying, I covered it with tape after a few days.

Complete waste of money, I have returned it.

1. Usability after a few weeks of use it stopped working. The first problem with this machine is its usability specifically, feedback to problems. It has a very capricious operation and the feedback it provides whenever a problem occurs is illegible. It is capricious because, it complains when (a) the water tank is half empty. When it complains you cannot make a decision to override it in other words, when the red light goes on because your water tank is half empty, you cannot continue making coffee until you fill it up again. It takes 2-3 lattes to empty half the water tank in other words, if you have several people for coffee, you can keep yourself busy filling the water tank, forget about polite conversations; (b) after 2-3 lattes you are also forced to dispose off of the used coffee, as it doesn''t let you make your own decision, even though the disposal container takes a third of the volume of the machine and has plenty capacity to store 30 times more.

2. Reliability I have this coffee maker for less than three months. It has been in repair 2 times, for a total of over a month. The first time I had to send it for repair after only three weeks of use, when the red light stayed on, no matter what I did. Customer service determined that the machine was faulty and asked me to send it for repair. It came back after 14 days with a note that they found nothing wrong with it! Miraculously it now worked, yet, while the red light problem went away, there was another, new problem. Now when I made espresso, the steam hose was dripping concurrently and profusely, emptying the water tank even faster then it already did under normal conditions. Called customer service again. They diagnosed it as a potential problem with an O-ring and asked me to send the machine for repair again, this time to their center in Ohio. I sent the machine for the second repair on November 14th, and I still don''t have it back as of this writing (Dec 9, 2009) you do the math!!! AND YES, THEY HAD TO REPLACE ALL THE O-RINGS IN THE MACHINE, SO PLEASE TAKE A PITY ON YOUR MACHINE AND TRY NOT TO USE YOURS EXCESSIVELY, MAYBE A CUP A WEEK OR SO...

3. Customer Service this is the worst customer service money can buy. It is not that the reps are not nice they are very nice and courteous. However, they are completely ineffective, dis-empowered to make any decisions (everything goes to a supervisor, her manager, and so on). When you''re on the phone with the customer service rep, (which they have one of, judging by the wait time of 30 minutes on the average, and the fact that you get the same one every time) it may take 3-4 "waiting in between" times for him to go ask the supervisor how to answer my question or what to do with my request. And it goes on and on. By the way don''t call during lunch as you will get a voice prompt politely asking you to call back as the company is out to lunch literally! And yes, if you thought you can get a status of repair on your coffee machine you paid so much for, forget about it. They have no ability to tell you anything except that "its on the workbench" or its not on the workbench... If they promise to call you back to let you know what''s going on, because now it has been three weeks and you have called them multiple times, sent them multiple mail messages, etc., don''t hold your breath they won''t get back to you, guaranteed. And guess what, having gone through all this, they won''t send your machine overnight. If you have an issue with this, here is the reply you will get (I got this earlier today):

"I''m sorry that you feel that way. You should have been told that our turnaround right now is roughly 2 weeks. As I stated before, we are the main warranty center for THE ENTIRE UNITED STATES. THIS IS THE HOLIDAY SEASON. WE ASK OUR CUSTOMER TO BE PATIENT WITH US DURING THIS EXTREMELY BUSY SEASON. We ship standard ground. Anything other than standard ground must be paid for by the customer." It reminds me of the movie "My Cousin Vinny", when the whole store got the flu... The "roughly 2 weeks" she quotes has been 4 weeks now, so "roughly" goes a long way with Saeco. It also shows you how busy they are with repair the more they sell, the more they are swamped with faulty coffee machines.

Will update you when I get the machine back. Obviously I would have returned it to Amazon within the first 30 days, had I known what is in store for me. Now I have to keep it. But I am clearly done with Saeco no more buying their stuff. BTW if anyone knows if I have a different option, would love to learn about it.

Update 1/14/2010

And so it goes on and on. The long story from above ended up with Saeco replacing my first machine with a new one. Got back from my vacation few days ago and found a new machine awaiting to be finally enjoyed. My wife and I were very excited. Opened it up, read the documentation and watched the video and started setting it up. I won''t burden you with details three days later the new machine doesn''t work. Discovered that a selection knob (steam/hot water) is damaged. Sent Saeco support a couple of messages with the images of the broken part. No reply. Called Customer Service several times, waiting 20-40 minutes and ending up being disconnected. So here we are. I guess it''s lawyer''s time now.

We got this coffee maker for my husband, who likes to drink a lot of coffee and expend practically no effort to prepare it / clean up afterwards. He already knew drip machines were not for him clean up after every use... So he had switched to a French press and got to like the bold flavor but that ended up being too much work still. After that he was only drinking "Turkish coffee" (i.e. dump the grounds in a cup and pour water over them) that was about the right amount of effort but just didn''t taste that great. Especially compared to his favorite "Americanos" at the neighborhood coffee shop.

SOO, when I saw this machine I knew we had to get it. We found it almost 50% off at an unnamed dept. store so I have absolutely no reason to justify an expensive purchase by writing a positive review :).

I would not say it''s cheaply made at all. The parts where it matters most use high-quality materials. I don''t care if my water tank is plastic it seems to be crack resistant all right.

The maintenance could not be easier it cleans itself by running a bit of water through the system before every use (so the coffee never tastes stale) and all you have to do is empty out the grounds drawer and rinse the "brew group" about every week. Very easy.

My husband can make his americanos just by a touch of a button the dispensing of extra water could not be easier. The switch to steam, just as easy. He loves the coffee and so did our guests all major coffee fans.

And here''s my favorite part. I didn''t even drink coffee before we got this thing but now I will actually make a super light latte now and then. What won me over? The high-pressured, super-effective milk frothing system and the option to reduce the amount and strength of the coffee you brew. I can''t think of a better investment and I''m glad I listened to my coffee-fanatic sister about going for the proven Saeco brand.

Have been using this machine for a week now, and, most importantly, it makes outstanding coffee. I am not a coffee expert, but as a (now former) Starbucks regular, I can testify that I''d prefer coffee from this machine over Starbucks brew any day.

Other things on the good side:

easy to install and simple to operate

very fast, a great cup of coffee is always just a minute away

On the downside:

Although the design is ok, the execution is a bit on the cheap side (for what I''d expect at this price tag) with plastic body and controls not having a feel of precision mechanism

alarm indicators (too add water, add coffee, empty waste tank) are a bit cryptic and it takes an effort to figure out what this machine wants from you, maybe I''ll get better at it with time.

The Talea Giro shows a lot of functional improvements over my 1997 Saeco machine. It makes better coffee, yet I don''t believe it will be nearly as reliable and it is positively loaded with clumsy, annoying misfeatures. I''m somewhat disappointed. It is a machine to be endured rather than enjoyed.

I''ve been fussing with it for a few days and now have it making very good coffee. There is a lot of crema, which will easily float a teaspoon of sugar for five seconds. The coffee is much hotter than it was from the old machine. I make a couple two-shot cups in the morning and espresso at night, and both kinds of coffee are as good as restaurant espresso but not as good as the best hand-pulled shots.

As I said, there are several controls to twiddle. There are some that weren''t present on my old machine, and you have to tweak them for some time before decent coffee starts coming out. You control the grind fineness, the water volume, the dose (amount of ground coffee per shot) and the back pressure on the filter. Once you get these lined up to your satisfaction, the shots come out at a reasonable pace regardless of the amount of water that''s going to go through the ''puck'' of compressed coffee grounds. Once set, these controls seem to stay set.

The machine is much busier than my old one. When you start it up, it rumbles and growls for a few seconds, then there is a cheesy flashing Christmas-light display no doubt meant to assure you there is something going on. After that, it spits a couple ounces of hot water into the drip tray and hums a bit more to itself. All this activity is conducted at a low sound volume, at least. When you push the "brew" button there are all kinds of whirrings and gurgles. The grinder is fairly quiet.

The machine''s design is functionally OK it makes good coffee but it has enough usability problems to reduce an industrial engineer like me to helpless laughter. The exterior is not well made. It reminds me of a Fisher-Price doll house with lots of flaps and buttons to push, all somewhat misshapen and all made of plastic that''s a little too thin to be worthy of a machine this expensive.

The machine is pretty much cylindrical and it rotates on its feet so you can easily spill your coffee when you turn it to one side or the other as you must, to accord with its cryptic signals, or when you try to push the power button without making a weird Vulcan death-grip pinch on it. The water tank is hidden behind a cheap-looking panel. It should be visible so you do not have to rely on the machine turning on its ! light (its way of saying "something is wrong") to know when to do something, perhaps refill it. On top is the bean hopper. The bean hopper is supposed to hold the beans and allow them to slide into the grinder that''s located at its low point. My old machine had a round bean hopper with a conical bottom leading to the grinder a straightforward, silo-like device. The Talea Giro has a wide, shallow bean hopper with a nearly flat bottom so the beans stay perched in clumps instead of sliding into the grinder. You end up herding beans toward the grinder all the time and just so you don''t get carried away and try this while the grinder is operating, the cover is now interlocked. However, you can see the beans that aren''t going into the grinder. The hopper cover is clear. On my old machine the cover was opaque and that is the way it should be since coffee is degraded by light.

There''s another interlock on the water tank door and yet another on the "dregs drawer" where the pre-heat water and the used coffee pucks are ejected. The machine tells you to dump the "dregs drawer" every fourteen shots, no matter whether you''ve just done it or not, and it won''t proceed until you comply.

The half-bakery continues with a feature that was good in concept but was executed with malice aforethought. The drip tray moves up and down. This is wonderful if you have a tall morning coffee cup but short espresso cups. However, the entire mechanism is made of blow-molded cheap. It wobbles to help you spill your coffee when you turn the machine. The water-containing bit of the drip tray pulls off so you can dump it and when you do, you find that it''s so light and flimsy that you wonder how it manages to hold a cup up without catastrophic failure. This is going to get broken, perhaps when it''s bumped by a wandering kitten, and you need it because all the coffee you have spilled while turning the machine this way and that ends up in it.

I''m extremely unimpressed by the "BMW Designworks USA" effort at building coffee makers. These designers changed a machine that could have a straightforward way of operating into an expensive treasure hunt game, re-inventing things to make them needlessly complex, less useful and more annoying in the process, very much like recent BMW cars. I''m giving the machine three stars because the coffee quality is so good, but Saeco: give the industrial design job back to your old group. They built things that work and last, like my old Saeco machine.

Summit 1152 Clear-Water Barley Flakes Pond Treatment, Treats up to 5000-GallonsThumbs Up. It took about 10 days, then the water became very clear and the string algae declined noticeably. The bags are easy to use and stay on the bottom after one turn at floating up after a few days.

This stuff works incredibly well. I used some flakes in a very small pump & it''s keeping the water crystal clear. I used the greater part in a larger pump & it''s working well too. I think next time I''ll use only half the flakes I may have overkill for my very small water features. But this is the first year my larger pond has had good water quality & the temperature has been brutal.
