In response to the 2 main problems other reviewers report with this product, my experience is that they can be resolved with minimal effort.

3/4 inch threads not sealing. I had no problem with this. I used thread tape, wrapped around the male fittings 4-5 complete turns, CLOCKWISE (important). I then threaded my fittings into the housing until they seated against the housing (my fittings have a collar), tight but not ridiculously tight. No leaks under normal household water pressure.

10 inch filters not fitting into housing. I purchased Culligan 20 micron filters and Purenex 5 micron filters. Purchased the Purenex because Amazon was out of the Culligan 5 micron. The Culligan filters are 9 5/8 inch long and have hard plastic caps on each end. The Purenex are 10 inch long and do not have any caps at the ends, they are all "filter". Needing to use the 5 micron, I inserted the 10 inch Purenex into the housing and screwed the base into the top and yesthe filter seems to be too long for the housing. I continued to screw the housing together, a little forceful, until the 2 pieces seated together. I encountered no leaks here either. I then checked the filter to see if it was crushed or distorted and it was not. Thus I think one can use 10 inch filters, they just need to be screwed on more tightly and the filter will conform. Also, as another posted; you could easily cut the filter shorter.

Very happy with the housing, made well, does exactly what I need; which is to pre-filter for a smaller micron filter in our roof-fed cistern water system.

There''s one flaw that makes the Culligan HF-150A unusable, at least for me: The NPT threads for the inlet and outlet are cut incorrectly and do not work well with standard fittings.

As everyone knows, NPT threads are cut on a taper, so that the pieces snug into each other as you tighten. Both threads on this filter are cut too large. When you try to screw in standard NPT compression fittings, the fittings bottom out before becoming acceptably snug. (I wasn''t even using a wrench; I was tightening them by hand!)

I discovered this while I was dry fitting everything, and without thread tape. However, several professional plumbers at the local plumbers'' supply house agreed that all was not right with this unit. They tell me that one would expect that the fittings should get snug well before bottoming out, even without thread tape.

One plumber at the supply house suggested I kludge it with LOTS of thread tape, and maybe a water hose gasket; others suggested trashing this unit and getting a "good" one. Not wanting to kludge or experiment, I went with the latter suggestion ditched this filter.

Note: The instructions talk about using a "BF-34" fitting kit to install this. Perhaps the only fittings that work with this are the BF-34 fittings. I don''t know. As I said above, I gave up on this filter.

Whatever filter you end up using, I suggest putting a cut-off valve on *BOTH* sides of it; that will make filter changes much easier. Being able to isolate the filter on both sides, you won''t have to turn off the water supply on the inlet, and won''t have the rest of the plumbing draining on your face through the outlet.

I am using this filter for all of the water coming into our trailer at a seasonal campground, in a "whole house" type configuration. Not sure exactly what was in the water, but it had a distinct taste and smell, and when boiling water for pasta, it would turn orange. After running water through it for only a minute, I removed it and looked at the filter and it had captured a surprising amount of "orange stuff". The filter does not seem to slow our water pressure at all.

The only issue I have with this filter, which I saw mentioned by other reviewers, is that when screwing in a standard 3/4" plumbing fitting into the filter, you need to use A LOT of teflon tape so that it does not leak. I had to put on teflon tape, put together, test, see leak, and repeat a number of times.

First of all, it''s much cheaper to buy these on Amazon than at your local hardware store. You can also get a good deal on the filters themselves by signing up for automatic shipment on the schedule you desire. That not only saves you on the filters, but also serves as a reminder that it''s time to change them out when the new ones arrive! There is another model that has a clear plastic body but it costs more for some reason. I had those and they froze and broke last winter so I thought these solid ones looked to be a bit stronger. If you are on a well, you should buy two of these and hook them up in series with a primary sediment filter in the first unit and a micron filter for the 2nd.

I got these two units installed and instantly had the clearest water coming from the tap. They cost more and have to be changed every two months, but the micron filter makes a huge difference over using cheaper ones that don''t have the higher filtering capability. I''ve got a lot of sediment and was using a Brita filter, but the water is now so bright and clear (and tasty) that I just use water straight from the faucet now. It''s the best water I''ve ever tasted actually!

Do not overtighten when you install the filters. If you have water leaking, check to make sure you didn''t drop the "O ring" when you removed the used filter. They also recommend putting some vaseline on the seal. Installed properly, you don''t have to use more than finger pressure with a slight snugging with the plastic wrench for a perfect seal. If you are still leaking stop and disassemble. Don''t force it too tight or it''s hard to get it off the next time you have to change filters.

If your filter box is outside make sure you have it adequately insulated if you are subject to hard freezes in your area. I have my box insulated with a 100 watt lightbulb on the inside which I plug in when temps drop into the low teens. I don''t recommend wrapping the pipes and the filters with insulation and heat tapes. That''s what failed disastrously last winter. First the heat tape failed and you couldn''t visually see that under the wrappings and secondly a couple of wraps of a heat tape around the filter wasn''t adequate. It was also a terrible mess to tear it all apart to change the filter cartridges! Better to insulate the whole box and put a visible heat source inside.

All we needed were basic cartridge casings to contain water filters for a two step filtering system outside of the RV without spending a fortune. Culligan had just what we were looking for. We''ll catch the sediment, etc. on the first filter then remove bad taste, etc. with the second filter before it enters our RV water system. You just need a 3/4 diameter 2" brass nipple to connect the two cartridges together (easily available at your local hardware store). Easy to use & worth the modest cost to help ensure better quality water coming into your home (or RV, in our case).

This was a good product--in the beginning. I certainly removed the chlorine odor, though I had no real way to know that it removed the actual chlorine or chloramines. After using it for a couple of weeks, my pH test did indicate that my system was more alkaline. After a few months, the water started to come out cloudy--and cloudier and cloudier, over the following weeks. Now, it is also all rusted inside. This may be the fault of a cheap handle on the little filter basket, but the product is now useless, regardless of the cause.

I paid full price for the "real thing", as opposed to the cheaper copies, specifically because I assumed that I would get better quality. In fact, if I had bought a cheaper one, I would probably just think you get what you pay for--though I would not buy another, as I don''t like to fill landfill...

The only thing that would make it better is if you didn''t need to get a replacement filter at all (wishful thinking, I know) but buying the filters a few at a time is probably a better way to go (so there''s no "wait" period when you need to replace it). Our pipes are pretty sensitive here. If we wait more than a couple of days between shaving, they get stopped up simply with barely centimeter-long hairs. This stuff did a great job loosening that stuff up and clearing our drains. It has a very weak odor so it''s surprisingly gentle on the nose as well. It does say it''s a "gel" but it''s not much thicker than water. I don''t know if you''re supposed to shake it first or not, but I had do because the thicker part of the solution would clump up meaning it was just adding to the clogging problem at first! :P

I was not happy with this product. It did NOT unclog my kitchen sink. In fact, my husband had to unclog the gel from this Liquid Plumber. I live in a house with 2500 square feet of tile. After years of watching my white grout slowly fade to shades of gray, it was time to invest in something more effective and industrial than my mop and bucket. It''s easy to clean tiles, but so far nothing was effective against my dirty grout. I had a carpet cleaning company quote me 50 cents a square foot to clean all the tiles/grout in the house. The Viva E40 checks in at $900 shipped, a discount over my $1250 cleaning quote. Buying a steamer was an easy choice.

I debated over several different steam cleaning machines. The choice to select a Reliable Enviromate product was the result of a phone call I made to their headquarters. Confused about which of their four core steamers to buy, I placed a call to ask about the differences. They were so helpful and informative that I felt comfortable with them as a company. Definitely someone who I''d like to do business with. The Viva E40 was the most expensive of the four I reviewed, but the commercial grade components, 5 year warranty, and continuous steam technology (never have to truly stop when cleaning to wait for a boiler to cool down) made the difference.

Out of the box, it took 10 minutes of instruction reading to get started. Everything hooked up easily and I was off and running. My first test was using the wand wrapped in a cleaning towel on the tile floors. With little effort, the steamer broke through sticky, dirty spots to leave a gleaming, clean floor. Did I mention you only need water, no chemicals? Next up was the grout. After a few minutes I realized it made sense to clean the grout first. I attached the nylon brush to the steamer tip and dug in. Holy crap, the dirt and grime started beading away from the grout. Charcoal colored grout suddenly transformed to the chalky white I remember from years ago. In fact, so much dirt and grime pooled to either side that I was constantly following the steamer with a rag to wipe up the nastiness (lest it reset in the grout). I then finished the floor with the steam wand.

I switched the from the nylon brush tip to the brass tip that came with the steamer. This was even more effective. With a little pressure application, I was ripping through the dirty grout twice as fast as before. Sadly, after several hours of this, the brass tip wore down to a nub and was useless. I then switches to the steel brush tip. This was as effective as the brass, but seemed to strip away the enamel from the tile. Based on that experience, I''d recommend using the brass tip on grout for best results.

Anxious to clean more, I am stuck waiting on an order of brass tips from Reliable Corp. And they''re not cheap. I ordered four more tips at $10 each, plus $21 shipping (they''re in Canada). Also, the cleaner comes with only two towels for the steam wand. Extra towels are $4 each from Reliable, which I think is silly. I ordered a pack of commercial bar towels from Amazon and hope that''ll do the trick (25 pack for $27). You''ll want to change these regularly.

It took me six hours to clean about 800 square feet of tile, and it wore me out. Keep in mind I''m catching up on years worth of dirt and grime. It''s going to take me another 12 hours of cleaning to get the rest of the house, but with results like this I don''t mind. I have no regrets thus far about purchasing this steamer.

VIVA E40

Pro: Looks nice. Good steam for a couple of hours. Nice attachments.

Con: Died after a couple of hours of light use. Machine would just keep alarming for empty water tank even though it was full. I had to turn it on and off about 5 times when first used to get the tank pump to prime. The pump would run for a few seconds then give up. The only way to get it to pump again was to cycle the power. Unfortunately this stopped working after the second refill.

Cheap labeling on the sides started to peel off almost immediately.

I contacted the manufacture who offered no help.

Returned for refund.

I replaced this with a Daimer steamer. All steel with retro look. Smaller than the VIVA and works very well.

I still love Amazon just not this steamer.

This machine stopped working after approximately five months. It started to beep continuously to signal that it was "out of water." However, the water container was full! I was told by the online retailer in Roswell, Georgia that I would have to contact the manufacturer, Reliable, in Toronto, Canada. They Reliable Tech Support person was unable to fix the problem over the phone, and I was given a RMA number to send the steam cleaner at MY EXPENSE of $89.95 to the Reliable Repair Center in Toronto, Canada.

After approximately three weeks, I emailed Reliable in Toronto, Canada to inquire if they had received the steam cleaner. They replied that they had, and that the steam cleaner was in the mail back to me. Upon receiving the SUPPOSEDLY repaired STEAM CLEANER, I loaded it with water and turned the steam cleaner on IT STILL HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. IT WAS NOT REPAIRED. I immediately contacted Reliable, and they emailed that I had to speak via a telephone call with same Tech Support person that previously could NOT fix the steam cleaner.

I also emailed the online retailer in Roswell, Georgia retailer regarding the steam cleaner''s demise, and they replied back that "Unfortunately, your request falls outside of the 30-day window. All warranty service for original customers is provided by the manufacturer of the product purchased. Our records indicate that you purchased on 4/30/2012." I thought that was "rich" as even though I did purchase the steam cleaner on 4/30/2012, I did not receive it until mid May 2012. By then half the 30 day warranty was used up.

With sales tax, I paid over $1,000 dollars, and I would like my money refunded. Reliable will NOT pay, and the online retailer has indicated that they are no longer responsible. Hence, I am out over $1,000 dollars.

Then to add further insult, my cleaning person indicated that she likes the Shark Steam Cleaner better. May I add that the Shark Steam Cleaner was considerably less expensive to purchase. The Reliable steam cleaner was only used every other week so you might say it has a short working life span.

Reliable is located in Toronto, Canada sending it to Toronto to be repaired is very expensive. If they would have repaired it, I would not be writing this email.

NO, I DO NOT RECOMMEND THE RELIABLE E40 STEAM CLEANER!!

I purchased this filter from a discount filter store on-line. It worked fine for about two weeks and then clogged. I was about to call for repairs on the refrigerator, but instead I replaced it with the genuine GE product and so far no troubles with the GE filter.

These water filters are the least expensive filters I have been able to find for my GE refigerator.

It is important to run water from the water dispenser after installing these filters. This will not only ensure that you have properly seated the filter during the installation, but will also clean the excess carbon particles from the water line.

If you don''t fully seat the filter no water will flow to your ice maker or water dispenser. (note: it is hard to tighten these filters, but just be persistent) I know this from experience and got lucky because no water was flowing since I had neglected to flush the line after the installation. When I flushed the line after fully seating the filter, it produced black water from the water dispenser until fully flushed. After running a couple glasses from the dispenser everything was running crystal clear. I am very happy that I didn''t end up with black ice cubes, because of my original error in not flushing the line after the install.

Bottom line: Excellent replacement for the much more pricey GE original water filters.

Rive 12-Ounce Hour Glass Bottle

After using 4 of these water bottles for 2 months, I finally put them in the recycling bin last week. I liked the size (12 oz), the shape of the bottle, and the silicon slipcase, but the caps were HORRIBLE. One of the 4 leaked immediately and another started to leak in a few weeks. Worse, no matter what I did, drinking from these caps was like drinking from a dribble glass. Small amounts of liquid would puddle on the top and dribble with the next sip. Finally, even though I followed instructions and washed both the bottles and caps by hand after each use, after about 6 weeks, all of the caps became very difficult to twist open/close for drinking.

I really want to use glass bottles for some things, like juice, but this Rive Elan design just doesn''t cut it. For now, I''ll stick with my trust-worthy stainless steel Klean Kanteen bottles for everything and continue the glass water bottle search.

Why is it so hard to make a reuseable bottle that doesn''t leak? This bottle is a nice size and shape that fits my hand. I loved it the first week, then it started to leak. It leaked a little the second week but by the third week it was a full 2-3 tablespoons of water at each drink. Every time I took a drink it leaked when I tipped the bottle up and the water ran through the gasket on the cap. The caps are the problem. They are thin, cheap, plastic and do not hold up to even minimal use. I also have a 16oz Rive bottle and after one week of use that one leaked too. I had only hand washed them so it wasn''t a dishwasher problem.

We live in a dusty place--agriculture nearby, windy conditions and a relatively dry climate mean constant dust. Plus we are in an area of high air pollution with coal-fired power plants. I find lots of dust in the house, and I know it makes me uncomfortable. We purchased the EcoQuest Fresh Air Purifier during a home show, and I find it lives up to its promises of cleaner air, though there is certainly a downside to using it (more about later.)

How it works

Some air purifiers work by filtering the air--they bring IN the air with a fan and blow it across a filter or precipitator to remove the dust. But the EcoQuest is different; it bombards the air with ions that make the dust fall down and break apart. While this sounds like science fiction, it is a well-known method of precipitating particles in many applications. Therefore, one EcoQuest works on a large area--in our case we use one for the main part of the house which is open plan and find it controls dust in the great room, the upstairs hallway and kitchen. (maybe a 1700 sq ft area.) When we need dust control in the bedrooms, we just move it in there. Normally, ours sits on the top of the stairs where it can reach the great room, hallways and kitchen.

This is the major advantage of the EcoQuest--since it doesn''t rely on bringing air into it, you can position it to cover a large part of a house.

Appearance and Operation

The Ecoquest Fresh Air Purifier is a squarish box, black in front and with faux rosewood plastic on the side. I guess it is about as unobtrusive as you can get, not pretty but not ugly either. It is the size of four or five phone books standing on end. There is a front panel with lcd readout and press-membrane style controls.

The unit has an ultraviolet light that generates ozone and then inside, there is a plate of ceramic covered with a metal screen. This is the ion generator.

The fan has several speeds, from one to five, five being the loudest and fastest.

The UV lamp in our unit, with fairly constant use, has been in service for two years and has not shown any signs of burning out. So far, so good.

You can choose settings based on the size of the area you wish to clean (small bedroom, car interior, large open room). We live in a pretty large open area, so we usually leave the unit on the 1750 sq ft setting.

You can choose how long to leave on the unit from 2,4, to 6 hours continuous operation, on high. This setting is for cleaning the house while you are gone. We choose to use this on days when the dust is getting to us, and we leave the house.

When we come home we notice:

1. The dust on the furniture is smaller in texture, and the carpets feel soft. The claim that the dust is broken down seems to be true.

2. We notice the lightning-struck smell of ozone. Some people find ozone a pleasant, fresh smell, but in large amounts, it is an irritant to me, and more than a little will give me a royal headache and makes me cough.

The Down Side

So, now, to the down side of the EcoQuest. The UV light generates ozone, and the ionizer plate apparently does as well. Ozone for many people, especially asthma suffers, is quite irritating. It''s actually a toxic gas in large amounts. So one has to go cautiously with the EcoQuest and air out the house. Ozone is used by fire remediation to purify air after a disaster, and also to remove stubborn odors. It''s a valid technique to purify air, as long as you remove the ozone afterwards. On its own, ozone is actually a pollutant. But it is a reactive type of molecule and breaks down, so getting rid of it is not difficult.

Maintenance

Monthly maintenance is required if you use the EcoQuest regularly or if the air is dirty. If you forget, a light goes on, indicating it''s time to clean the ion generating plate. There is a ceramic plate inside you remove by unscrewing a back plate Then you vacuum off the plate and dust out the inside carefully. This takes us about 15 minutes.

Parts to replace would include the ceramic plate and the UV lamp. So far, in two years of constant use, we have not had to replace anything.

Summary

The EcoQuest lives up to its claim of reducing dust by breaking it down and by generating air-freshening ozone. However, too much ozone is a pollutant in itself. Therefore, you have to use it carefully and be mindful that if you cannot tolerate ozone, this may not be the purifier for you. As long as we don''t crank up the ozone, we are quite happy with the unit. We have enjoyed good operating life with little maintenance so far.

Hands down this is the best air purifier I ever used. I used the Ionic Breeze and the Oreck XL and they don''t even come close to this unit. My friend let me borrow his unit because I was complaining how I was having problems getting rid of my cat odor in my room. Oreck XL was close in getting rid of the odor and The Ionic Breeze was a useless piece of junk. The Ecoquest got rid of my cat odor COMPLETELY.

I would get the ECOQUEST version though cause I think ECOQUEST bought out Alpine and updated the unit with more advance features like the lighted digital display, a "Go Away" feature, and added a remote control. You can get at ebay for around $300 for about the same price as the useless Ionic Breeze.

The unit works well eliminating dust and odor. Most of my friends who have this machine have the same complaint that I do Maintenance and new parts. They tell you that you never need to buy another filter. This is true, but the lamp ($17) always needs replacing (this is the 3rd one in 18 months) and friends of mine have complained that they have needed to replace the plate many times. Since you cannot buy parts at your local store, you need to get them online and wait while your machine is out of commission. You need to clean the machine at least once a month. It is not like other machines that just snap open. You need to unscrew the back panel, front panel and inside panel. It is amazing how dusty the inside gets! The filters are easy to wash down. Like anything else, when it is working it is great.

Many people do not understand what ozone is, therefore they are afraid of it and say all manner of inaccurate statements about it. The reason air purifiers and especially the Ecoquest air purifiers work so well is that they are modeled after nature itself.

Ozone is created in nature all the time, especially around moving water, in the mountains and after thunderstorms, to clean the air, but in conjuction with water it does more. It is also found wherever there is pollution...and there is a reason for that. There are several things ozone was designed to do. To name two: clean/purify the air of pollutants and kill mold.

A molecule of ozone is O3 while oxygen is O2 and water is H2O. Here''s a picture that might help in understanding this entire process and the bad rap ozone gets from some. If there is a fire, then the firemen are alerted and they go to the fire to fight it and put it out. Now, if we started saying that firemen cause fires, because they are always there whenever there is a fire, that would be silly. It''s the same way with ozone. Calling ozone a pollutant or saying it is the cause of pollution is not scientifically accurate. Ozone forms when there are pollutants in the air, therefore, the more pollutants there are, the more ozone there is.

The O3 actually has one atom of the three that is unstable. This is why it can clean pollutants out of the air. This unstable atom gets attracted to the pollutant atoms and puff!...it then oxidizes (burns up.)Then you have a clean oxygen molecule, O2, because the third one is gone! It continues on with this process until all the air is cleaned. This is especially helpful after a forrest fire, so again, that is why these machines work so well in rapidly getting rid of smoke damage even in wood in a home. It is beautiful in its simplicity.

Now, let''s deal with the toxicity of ozone...and asthma sufferers (I have asthma and I love what the air purifiers do in my home.) Would you agree that water is good for us? What if we were in the middle of the ocean and couldn''t swim? Sometimes in some situations too much of a good thing is not so good! But it does not make the actual item the bad guy...it is how one uses it. Anti-biotics are good for us, but getting too much has now created the very thing we were trying to stop. I am sure you can think of many such situations...fire is good, too much and used wrongly and it can mame and kill, etc.

When one goes hiking in the mountains, often it is said that the "mountain-fresh air" is just great. There is more ozone there. Even at its highest setting, less ozone is created in these machines than what has been determined to be an irritant. It is only a matter of enclosure. When I use my purifier on the highest output of ozone to "sanitize" a room or my bedding, I shut the door and let it do its thing. When I open the door, I can smell a lot of ozone. All one has to do, is then turn the purifier down or off, and open the door a few minutes! It dissapates almost immediately. We often have people enter our home and remark at how fresh it smells (and I have three cats.)

But...there are a few (very few in our experience) who have not liked the way our home smells...my daughter, for one. She just does not like it. She says it smells like bleach or dirty socks! So, we turn the purifier down. For us, we are so used to it, we do not even smell it anymore unless we have been gone for awhile...and then we only smell it a few seconds upon entering our home. (And that is not because our sense of smell is being destroyed! It is a natural thing that one gets used to ones own smells if one is around them long enough...hence, we often get offended by another or another one''s environmental odors while they are not...much, much evidence and examples can be used here...like I said, we smell it again if we have not been around it for while.)

Now as to mold and how the ozone works on it. The unstable atom of the O3 breaks off as it is attracted to the moisture (H20) in the mold. It attaches itself to the H2O making it H2O2. And guess what H2O2 is? It is hydrogen peroxide, and that kills mold! Another beautiful creation in nature for our benefit...and yet, when man discovers these things, we then can harness the discoveries to make them work for us in many, many other ways. Hence, a wonderful air purifier.

There is certainly not time, nor space, nor most likely interest to cover these subjects in their scientific entirety, but at least this general overview can address some of the inaccurate rumors touted today. The bottom line is that anything that can be good for us, if abused, misued, etc, can also be not so good. It is not good or bad in itself, it is how it is utilized.

My son and I both have asthma and before we purchased the Fresh Air unit, we would wake up with itchy eyes and sniffles every morning (no indoor pets). I cannot get this thing to work. The directions are hard to read, but I followed them to the best of my ability.

There is a strainer thing in it that makes no sense at all. I put it inside the way it appears to belong, and it gets stuck halfway down. I turn it upside down, and it doesn''t get stuck, but it stays halfway down the container.

I have tried multiple times to get this thing to work, but the pH does not change or only changes .1. I am wondering if maybe my product is defective. I don''t use it.

The water in the cup is more neutral than alkaline. I also would have preferred it a bit larger. The strap on the cover broke off within a week. Although the price was right, I would recommend spending a bit more and getting a better product.

I ordered this product based on various positive reviews. I was not disappointed.

When I first applied the product, I was uncertain as to whether it was really doing the job on the grout, but I did not realize how dirty our light colored grout had become. Wow, what a difference. I used the dilution ratio of 1 product to 5 water and it cleaned very well. I do have a couple of spots to redo now that I can see the difference in the colors. The spots that I need to redo are around the main cooking area and I may change the dilution ratio for those particular areas.

We have a very large kitchen/dining area and it is all tiled so it took me a good part of the day since I only did small areas at a time. I put the product on with a sponge mop and used a scrub brush and a toothbrush to get into the grout. Our tile has been down since 2005 and even with regular cleaning, I still am surprised at the good results with Aqua Mix. A little goes a very long way.

I will definitely purchase this product again when I need it.

I bought this grout cleaner and followed the directions exactly as given. After my tile floor dried, I didn''t see any difference on my grout, what a disappointment! I just got this coffee maker a few days ago and for the most part I like it, but, and this is a major but for me, the coffee just isn''t quite hot enough. I find myself throwing my cup in the microwave to get it piping hot, not scalding but hot. I had the same leaking problem that another reviewer had. After about 1 month of daily use this unit starts leaking from the back and liquid coffee goes down to the warming plate making a mess and causing a burnt coffee smell. The company kindly sent me another unit but the same thing happened. So now they are sending me a second replacement and I chose a different model which hopefully will be more reliable. But based on the review on that unit I am not optimistic that unit is any better.

Summary: it died after 40 days.

I did my homework before picking this one, relying a lot on other reviewers'' comments. I concede that the pour-from-the-front feature was appealing, but after getting the machine, I realized that it''s not such a great design. Because the water channels through this front access swing-out arm, it''s very difficult to REMOVE unwanted water, not to mention grounds that somehow end up in the reservoir. When I used a flashlight to examine the reservoir, I was appalled at how scummy it was, even after only a few weeks'' usage.

The digital clock is terribly clumsy. To set the clock or brew time, you must hold down a single button until it reaches the desired time. The brew time defaults to 6AM, so if you want to set it for 5AM, you must cycle through 23 hours of counting.....and if you want to change it for the weekend, it''s very awkward. Hey, this is 2008! Can''t you do better than this, DeLonghi? This is a stone-age digital clock!

But the bottom line was simply this: the heating element stopped working after only 40 days of use. That''s simply not acceptable. In the past, a coffeemaker could be expected to last for many years of daily use. Sadly, none of the "imported" coffeemakers I''ve tried recently can match that performance. This model was an exceptional failure.

After the first month coffee would slowly come out of the carafe around the silver strip near the bottom and get on the burner and the smell of burnt coffe would fill the house.
