We have had this filter for going on three years and just ordered a replacement. We had the same experience as the other reviewer who ranked it one star, but I called the customer service number and was told that in addition to letting water flow through the filter for approximately 10 minutes prior to first drinking the water, you have to turn on your tap with the water stream about the same diameter as a pencil (at the bottom, where it hits the sink, THEN push the button to bring the water through the filter. Once we began doing this, the water tasted great and we love using it. We always know if we''ve allowed the water to flow through it too fast, because we get a slight mineral bite, but we''ve gotten quite good at getting it right and it''s very simple once you know what needs to be done. I find it unfathomable that the company doesn''t include instructions with the filter, as I have talked to several people that have had the horrible mineral/metal taste and haven''t bothered calling customer service (again, unfathomable) to find out if their filter is faulty or if there is something different they can do to make it work right (there is!). Once you find out how to use this filter it works great. It does allow water to drip out of the filter every now and then after it''s been shut off, so you want to make sure it''s always over the sink. For the price, you can''t beat this filter; it''s just unfortunate that Crystal Quest doesn''t tell its customers how to use it from the start.

Be warned about this alleged fluoride water filter. It may, or may not, actually remove fluoride, but the filtered water has a strong, bitter and metallic aftertaste that lingers in your throat. I had a horrible experience with Crystal Quest and I absolutely do not recommend this filter. The top spout is poorly designed and can get stuck inside the top of the filter if you turn too much. The spout does not tighten, so you will not know if you have gone too far. Once stuck, good luck getting it back out. I am very dismayed I blew money on this and wish I had read other reviews on the internet about the metallic taste this product leaves behind in the filtered water.

BWF100 Bionaire Humidifier Wick Filter

I bought a bionaire humidifier that uses 2 of these wicks. They''re a necessary evil, because the humidifer wont work without them.

My humidifier (a Bionaire BCM645) is basically a glorified self-refilling water bowl, with a pair of wicks dangling down into the water in the lower backside of the unit ... the wicks absorb water upwards, and the humidifier (basically a vertical tube with an exhause fan up up equipped with a humidistat) draws airflow in crosswise through the body of the wicks down below in order to blow humidified air out the top ... it''s a simple design that sorta works.

The problem is that mineral deposits build up in these glorified (and overpriced) sponges, and they lose their ability to wick water upwards fast enough to keep up with the rate of evaporation ... the result is that they become dried out and crusty (and slowly stained with mildew), and only stay wet on the part that''s dipped in the water.

Now, here''s the annoying part, and why I only gave this product 3 of 5 stars ... they''re needlessly fragile by design. The manufacturer WANTS you to keep reguloarly buying replacement sponges, just like inkjet printer manufacturers want to keep selling you overpriced ink cartridges. Even though I have fairly soft water, and use a carbon block filter, these wicks only seem to last me about 2 weeks per pair, by default, before they lose their ability to absorb/wick moisture and/or fall apart. Perhaps someday someone will make longer-lasting reuseable cloth replacement filters, but as of this writing, there dont appear to be any available ... because it''s against the manufacturer''s fiscal interests to make and sell such.

You can save money 2 ways:

1) SHOP AROUND: you can save as much as 50% by shopping around for the cheapest supplier, and scoffing at any implied manufacturer product loyalty. How ? The replacement filters for Holmes (HWF100) and Bionaire (BWF100) are functionally identical and interchangeable. They come 6 to a package (3 pairs).

2) RINSING: These wicks are rather fragile resist the urge to wring them out when rinsing them, or you''ll damage them. Instead, fill a sink with body-temperature water, let them soak for 5-10 mins (to let the deposits soften & par-dissolve), then gently press them flat (while submerged) a few times. Then drain them (dont wring them) and reinstall. That should extend their performance by another week or so. Each subsequent rinse will yeild only half the benefit though. At best, you''ll be able to double their lifespan.

Bottom line: I dont really recommend these wicks ... but if your humidifier requires them, there isnt much choice. However, if you use the tips I listed above, you can save up to half the cost, and make them last as much as twice as long.

I did not buy this item. But I did want those who use Bionaire humidifiers to know that there are new filters available.

Holmes replacement filter HWF100 can be used in place of this item and is available from several sellers (at a lower price than this used item) including Amazon which currently offers free shipping.

I ordered these filters for my humidifier because last time I bought the knock-off brand filters and they only lasted a very short period of time. My humidifier takes two of these filters at once... the first thing that disappointed me was receiving 3 filters... I for some reason assumed this listing meant you receive a 3-pack as in "3 replacements worth"... but I was wrong, you actually get 3 filters when you buy this. For me, this is dumb, because my humidifier takes two of them, so I''m left with an extra filter... now I have to buy another 3-pack to make it even.

The other thing that is a little weird is that this seller "cd_cellar4" doesn''t include the original packaging when they ship these filters, you just get 3 filters stuck in an envelope, so there''s no definitive way to be sure you received true Bionaire-brand filters, and not another knock-off brand. And, the postage they paid to ship the filters is clearly marked as $1.90 on the package, even though you get charged $4.49.

My Bionaire humidifier is not new. I''ve been happy with it for about 3 years. But once I ran through the filters that came with it, I found I had trouble getting replacements. For awhile I could buy them at a local store, and then when they stopped carrying them I tried the internet. I bought some through Bionaire, but that was a hassle. So I was very happy to find that I could buy them through and I''ve had no problems since except maybe that they appear to be ''off brand'' rather than Bionaire filters.

From my communication with Amazon shoppers like you, and the Consumer Relations folks at Insinkerator, it appears that current models have been redesigned to hopefully eliminate the problems I had. If you have problems with an existing unit, I also would encourage you to contact Insinkerator support to see what they can do for you. They''re very good in my experience when your product is in warranty. I''ve heard from several folks that Insinkerator has replaced their unit outside of warranty too when they had this problem. Obviously there is some limit to what they will be willing to do, but the call is free. So if you''ve found this review because of a problem with your existing unit, your first step should be to call Insinkerator at 800-558-5712 and give them a chance to make it right. Post here with your experiences.

(Original Review) This Insinkerator product suffers from a couple of design flaws. Like many here I found a puddle of water under my unit about two years after installing it. Checked into buying a new unit, but at $200 I wasn''t going to give in easily. After reading other folks'' experience with the unit I opened mine up and found the obvious source of the leak. There is a 1/4" plastic vent hose than helps handle the return hot water after you release the faucet handle. Since it''s a non-pressurized unit, all water in the line up to faucet gets returned to the tank after you release the faucet handle. This hose, combined with a plastic overflow tank handles the water return. The root cause of the leaking problem is the type of tubing that was used for this one part. In the hot water heater it sits at near 200F, 24/7/365, and it can''t handle the heat. Mine had turned a dark brown to nearly black color and had completely failed where the hose was routed right along the stainless steel tank. Every time we used the heater the return water ended up in our cabinet. Because of this one piece, customers everywhere are replacing their tanks prematurely. It can be fixed if you are handy. Please note that any modification of your unit will void the warranty, and rightfully so. If your unit is under warranty you should call Insinkerator at 800-558-5712 and have them replace it. If you buy a new unit, don''t mess with it -it''s under warranty. Even if it''s out of warranty, give them a call -there''s a good chance they''ll do right by you. If you do try and repair it, know that you are on your own. Insinkerator strongly advises against any owner-initiated component repair. What I have done has been untested by Insinkerator and they have implemented their own fix in the current product design. Anything that happens during or after any repair you make will be your responsibility. And remember, nothing lasts forever.

HOW TO REPAIR: Basically you have to replace the hose with the right kind, and fortunately it''s pretty easy. I recommend silicone tubing (rated to 500F), and you''ll need some with 1/8" or 3/16" inside diameter. I bought some from an Amazon seller, 1/8" ID and 3/8" OD with thick 1/8" walls. (Edit: The original tubing is 3/16" ID but I went with 1/8 for a good snug fit. 3/16" ID tubing will also work quite well, and is what I would recommend at this point if you can find it.) Search on Amazon and you''ll find what I''m talking about. Unfortunately it''s only sold in 10'' or longer lengths, and you need less than a foot. If you can find it locally, all the better. For good measure get a couple of small plastic zip ties (cable ties) or the proper sized spring clamp to secure the new tubing.

1) Unplug, drain, and remove the tank. After unplugging the power cord, run water thru the unit till cold water flows out the faucet. Then place a large bowl (1-gallon capacity minimum) under the tank, unscrew the drain screw, and let the tank drain into the bowl. If you can easily shut off the water supply do it now, but it is not necessary as long as no one uses the faucet when you are working on the tank. While draining, remove the three tubes from the top of the tank. One has a spring loaded clip you need to depress to remove the tube and the other two are silicone and plastic tubes that just pull off (might vary a bit based on the age of your unit). Loosen the mounting screws, and when the tank has drained, remove it from your cabinet and find a water resistant place to work on it.

2) Disassemble the tank. Really easy -there is a small screw on the top that holds the two sides of the plastic shell together ... remove it. The two sides of the shell pull apart fairly easily but you might need to muscle it a bit. Once you get them apart, remove them from the unit and place aside. Then remove the temperature dial and put it aside. At this point you will have the guts of the unit with the steel tank encased in a dense styrofoam shell. Take a minute to examine the way it''s put together (pictures wouldn''t hurt either). You''ll most probably easily pick out the problem part -it will probably be very dark and brittle, and one end will be attached to the side of the water inlet port. Cut the hose somewhere before the metal (maybe plastic on yours) water inlet port it attaches to, and you will then be able to remove the upper styrofoam shell. After that you will see where the other end of the defective hose goes -the bottom of the plastic overflow tank. You will need to cut the old zip ties (or maybe spring clamps) at each end of the hose to fully remove the old hose.

3) Inspect and dry the full unit. You may want at this point to remove the other styro shell piece and completely dry everything. At this point I discovered that the leaking water has badly rusted several of the screws holding the two pieces of the stainless tank together. IMHO they should have used stainless steel screws. I wasn''t sure whether or not the rust has led to any leak in the tank itself, so I disassembled the stainless tank (fun to do with rusted screws I''ll tell you). Mine took a T-10 Torx driver for the screws, and I eventually got them all out. A trip to the hardware store got me some #6 x 3/4" stainless machine screws and lock nuts. If you see anything else besides the hose that could be a problem, you''ll need to deal with it for a complete repair.

4) Reassemble the unit, installing the new hose as you go. Put the tank back in the bottom styro shell. Attach one end of the silicone hose to the plastic overflow tank and secure with a zip tie cutting off the excess tie. Put the plastic tank back in the upper styro shell and slide the two back onto the top of the stainless tank. The plastic tank lines up with the silicone hose to the front of the unit. You''ll route the hose along the tank flange to the right of the unit just like the old hose was. Once the shell is as far down as it goes, route the hose along the side of the styro shell following the groove for the old hose (not a perfect fit, but that''s OK) and then over the top to the water inlet port. Hold it in place and see where you need to cut the silicone hose to fit the port without excess slack in the hose. Then cut the hose, attach it to the port and secure with a zip tie. Replace the thin upper piece of styro over the top of it all and reassemble it all into the plastic shell. Take your time and work the two halves together, making sure to get the power cord grommet correctly into the cutout in the shell. Get the bottom together first then work your way up. Pay attention to the new hose, keeping it tucked in behind the side of the front half of the shell (don''t let it end up stuffed behind the back half of the shell. When done properly the shell will snap together nicely, and you may note a slight bulge where the new hose is if you used the thicker silicone tubing like me -that''s OK. Put the small screw back into the top the shell, and reinsert the drain screw.

5) Reinstall and test tank. Just reverse the removal steps. Open the faucet until water flows before plugging the tank in. Then use the faucet normally, checking regularly for any leaks. Mine has been leak free for two weeks, and should last for years now.

That''s it, and it''s probably easier than it sounds. For a grand total of less than $25 (with nine feet of hose left over) I have a fully functional tank again. The rest of the unit is very well made. The tank iteslf is built like a ... well, a tank, so I expect it to last years. Good luck with your home repair efforts if you try. UPDATE 9/13/2010: A couple months now and still no leaks. I''ve been corresponding with another owner who ended up getting a replacement from Insinkerator. He sent me pics (thanks Jay!) that show they have changed the design of this particular tube that has been causing so many problems. The new design uses a different type of plastic for the tubing and avoids routing it along the steel hot water tank. They also seemed to have added a different type of gasket between the two tank halves. From what I saw, new units with this design won''t suffer the same problem I described above, but how to tell whether any one new unit purchased at retail will have this fix incorporated??

My poor rating is entirely related to the warranty service I attempted to obtain after my SST hot water dispenser quit working after 8 months of operation. During my contact with Insinkerator via the 1-800 number it was revealed that I must have have a copy of my receipt "for professional product installation."

Okay, what kind of a game is this? I do not have a receipt for installation, because I installed it myself using the instructions that were provided in the manual. The manual never specified professional installation required for warranty coverage.

On my further insistence on unit return and replacement, the customer service rep continued "We do not have a repair facility or shipping address. An Insinkerator selected plumber must be dispatched to your location. "You should be aware that you will be liable for the service call and the full unit replacement costs if it is determined the installation was not correct."

Okay, this is rubbish. The unit is a small, plastic, foam and very thin steel tank weighing less than a two pounds. It has two internal components, a 98 cent thermostat and heater element. The water flow is fine, so the thermostat or element quit. Why should a plumber be required to fix an ELECTRICAL PROBLEM?

At the time of purchase I was not aware of other alternatives. I now see that a simple electric hot water pitcher or heat-on-use hot water heater would have been better alternatives and have provided better warranty support.

My advice, keep looking.

The product is good, when it works. The problem is that the quality is terrible, and when it fails, it can cause property damage.

We purchased this product in early 2006, and as of this writing, it has failed three times. The first time, the heating element failed, and Insinkerator replaced it. The second time, the unit leaked all of its contents out, damaging our wooden cabinetry. When they replaced the unit, I wisely put a bucket underneath it. It came in handy when it failed yet again, dumping all of the water into the bucket I placed underneath it.

If you decide to purchase this unit, please make sure that it''s accessible for replacement and that you place a bucket underneath it. Check the bucket regularly. Also, make sure that the temperature is set to hot, but not boiling; otherwise, water will constantly run from the dispenser and the unit will burn itself out. Good luck.

Only time will tell, but the SST-FLTR heating replacement appears to be a noticable improvement over the original heating unit. My original instant hot water heater began leaking after about 3 years of use. This replacement has an external dial that allows for temperature adjustment depending on how hot you really want your water. We actually didn''t need it to be scalding hot, so we''ve moved the dial to the 12 o''clock position and it seems to be fine for our purposes. The casing is thick, solid plastic and the connectors and tubing appears to be improved over the early model. The heating unit also seems to be better insulated than the original, so hopefully it will keep the water hotter longer and actually save some energy.

My only gripe is with the pricing of the SST-FLTR only. Cheapest that I could find was $199 online, yet my local hardware store sells brand new H770-SS models (dispenser and heating unit) for $179. Same heating unit as the SST-FLTR. I used the heating unit as my replacement and I''ll see if I can sell the dispenser part for a few bucks at auction.

I bought 3 different BPA-free travel tumblers on Amazon last month. This one good, and I''ll definitely keep using it, but it does not compare well to the quality and features of the other 2.

All three are all priced within a few dollars of each other, and available for Free Super Saver Shipping and Amazon Prime. I have used them only for ice water and iced tea (black and herbal), and they hold no residual flavors, even with strong teas like peppermint. I bought the Starbucks version of this style cup for $15 and liked it but wanted a cheaper version of it so I could have several on hand. I found these here and bought three of them. They are very nice for what they are intended for and I do like them but they aren''t as nice as the Starbucks one. These are not double walled so their insulation is not as good and that causes them to sweat. But I can live with that. The straws on these are MUCH better than the one that comes with the Starbucks cup because they have a stirring mechanism built in with the "fins" on the bottom.

All in all they are very nice and I would recommend them to others. However, if you are looking for the same quality as the Starbucks cup you will be somewhat disappointed with these.

Someone I know raved about their Starbucks double-walled cold cup and I went to Amazon hoping to buy my own. They were out of stock at the Starbucks stores and being sold by others on Amazon for outrageous prices, so I investigated other options.

I wanted a 24 oz. cup so that narrowed my choices right off the bat. The Copco Sierra tumblers looked really cute and I liked the rubber grip feature, secure lid and "finned" straw. All the initial reviews were positive so I purchased 2 of these.

The bright colored versions of these tumblers are exactly the same as the brown version, but for some reason Amazon has them listed separately. Someone who reviewed the brown one said that they were double-insulated and did not "sweat" though other people said they did.

Here''s the real deal: they are NOT double-insulated, and they DO "sweat!" See my photos for verification. Even the rubber hand grip portion collects condensation, and also gets very coldso overall I would say these are not very well insulated and you need a coaster if you don''t want a wet table.

The other thing that disappointed me is that the tumblers are not comfortable to drink out of directly (without the straw and lid), because of the threads for the screw-on lid. sometimes I like to use a cup like this without a straw, but I won''t be using this one that way. The screw-on feature does make the lid more secure, so it''s a trade-off.

Bottom line is, I like but don''t love these tumblers. Guess I''ll wait for the next shipment of the double-walled ones from Starbucks unless something better comes along!

I''m a white boy who married a lovely mainland Chinese woman about ten years ago. Her parents also live with us. They have all been educating me about tea for the last ten years. So I now understand plenty about the proper steeping of Chinese tea. We own a second home in China, and have coincidentally returned only days ago from a two week trip there, where we bought lots of good tea!

We own FOUR of these teapots, and have used them for years. This product is quite popular in many areas of China because of the quality of this teapot and how well it steeps tea.

This teapot has an upper reservoir of about one cup capacity, which lowers into the larger body of the teapot. The bottom of the upper reservoir contains a stainless steel ball stop valve. When you press a small button on the top of the teapot, the ball lifts and tea is strained through a fine stainless steel mesh as it drains into the lower reservoir. Then you refill the upper chamber with hot water for the next infusion.

NOTE: everyone I know uses this product only for serving ONE, maybe TWO people; this teapot''s capacity is too small for serving larger groups. Typically, owners use this as a "personal teapot" (at work, or wherever), loading it in the morning and infusing off the same tea all day long. That''s how I use it EVERY day at work.

I strongly recommend this as a personal teapot for steeping LOOSE tea, for these reasons:

1) You can easily increase each successive infusion time (off the same tea as it weakens), to ensure consistent tea intensity: pushing the button quickly vents tea into the lower reservoir, effectively halting the infusion (and fixing the intensity). A glance at the tea color through the transparent reservoir tells you when the intensity is just right.

2) You should always "wash" each new batch of tea leaves, and this teapot is very convenient for that; you simply put the dry tea in and poor hot water into the upper reservoir, swish it through the tea for about 20 or 30 seconds; then vent that directly into the sink to discard that wash water.

3) This product is well designed and quite reliable. Yes, as other reviewers mentioned, it does have a minor design flaw (which is why I lowered the rating to four stars): if you shake this teapot too vigorously while washing it, the stainless steel stopper ball can become slightly jammed. An easy fix to this has never failed me: simply lift up the button (attached to its control rod) about a cm, and then shake the ball back into position. As example of the general quality of the product, the fine mesh strainer is high quality stainless steel because I''ve never seen that mesh rust or discolor. Other Chinese made tea strainers (from different manufacturers) are often seen having rusted mesh strainer after only few months. Also this teapot survived my accidentally dropping it several times (while heavy filled with tea) about four vertical feet onto a hard floor. I was amazed it survived unbroken.

4) It is absolutely true this teapot gets more tea (more infusions) out of each gram of tea, compared to any other teapot. However, keeping in mind those last infusions may easily be 20 minutes steeping time. You yield more tea per load due to the bottom venting ensures the flow of hot water is always down through the tea, also the upper chamber is small so infuses more effectively even when the tea is quite weakened by previous infusions.

This is a very nice tea pot, I really like the design, which is very functional. I use it daily at office and it is easy to clean out the tea leaves.

I bought this because I loved the idea that I could keep re-infusing my green and white teas in the same pot so easily. Unfortunately, my strainer/infuser stopped working and I have to dismantle it with almost every use. The steel ball keeps going off-track and getting stuck. That is getting really old! I finally broke down and bought the Teavana Perfect Tea Maker, which is similar in concept but brews 16 oz. of tea with each infusion. Even though the Piao I pot is a 16 oz. pot, you can only brew 8 oz. at a time since that''s all the infuser holds. For any price, this pot is not worth it!

The concept is great though the volume could''ve been greater, but the snag comes when they chose to use polycarbonate for the infuser. In theory, it should be able to stand boiling water, but a week after usage, I find the bottom a bit distorted, which then led to seepage of the fluid from the infuser to the pot. Then the steel ball got stuck and the filter started coming off.

On the bright side, I can use the pot still.

To make them last:

-add a cap of liquid bacteria treatment (buy this in a hardware store for cheap) to the base of the humidifier every other week

-soak the filters in warm vinegar water once monthly (they will retain a slight vinegar smell for a day, but that quickly fades)

I typically get 4 months use out of the filters before I replace them. With the effort I put into keeping them clean I likely could use them longer, but the mineral stains make me think they''re dirty.

I haven''t been able to locate these filters in local stores (and trust me when I tell you I''ve searched all over Denver!), so I tend to order in bulk off from Amazon once a year and keep a supply of them in the closet.

The filters were well priced, exactly as advertised, delivered with lightning speed, and made that humidifier work like new. You can''t ask for much more than that!

I received this water filter and there were no instructions included. No documentation whatsoever. After hooking this up the water tasted no different than the faucet water. I used a water tester to test the water and it read 261 ppm with the filtered water which was worse than the regular tap water which read 252 ppm. This is a ripoff and not worth $80. It does not filter the water. I immediately returned this back to Amazon for a refund. Still looking for a quality water filter that actually filters the tap water. Test your filtered water people. Not happy.

This is a replacement for my old Cuisinart coffee maker which I had for about six years or so (the predecessor to this model). I loved my old one even with some of the little quirks it had. It beat out any Braun or Krupp pot which I had ever owned. This new updated model is a winner. All of the small annoyances have been solved, such as the small fill tank opening, the dripping cover that leaked back into the fill tank, and finally, thank you Cuisinart people, a water level guide on the outside of the unit. The front knobs on the front are now also easier to see and use. As my other Cuisinart did, it brews superior coffee and quickly. I find it takes about one minute per cup... 12 minutes for twelve cups, not bad at all. Yes, the unit does make some clicking and popping noises when it is new, so did my old one. But that goes away in time as the unit gets "broken in". I do not think you can find a better coffee maker on the market.

The title says it all. I''ve had 3 Cuisinart coffee makers the last 3 years, 1 thermal and 2 of these. After about a year using twice a day I start to find water on my counter top. Consumer Reports and Amazon customers love these and I did too until the leaks started. Who in the world would have a coffee pot as a best friend? When you make and drink 5 to 7 pots of coffee a day you need a best friend. You need a friend who is there for you anytime you need one and that friend has to be consistent; i.e., one good pot after another. The DCC-2600 is my new best friend. In a short time it has performed better than its older cousin, the DCC-1200. The DCC-122 is still right up there with the DCC-2600; however, I wanted a 14 cupper and it is perfect.

The coffee tastes the same: great. It still takes about one minute per cup. That is perhaps a tad too much time but I don''t care. I can always do something else while it is brewing. After all, a super cup of coffee is worth waiting a few minutes. I can always set the timer and have it ready when I awaken. The setting process is still simple enough for me to do. I really like being able to see the plain water display on the outside instead of having to strain and look over the top of the pot. That''s a nice enhancement just as it the anti-drip change Cuisinart made.

I''m not an interior designer; however, I like the changes made to the outside appearances of this pot compared to the DCC-1200. I just looks better to me. The included gold filter is a nice touch and its inclusion should be a constant; however, I still prefer the cheap, paper filters. Paper filters are easier to clean up from than the gold filter. That is the only reason for my statement.

Best friends do not let you down and this pot pumps coffee without one retort. It works well and performs the job with vigor.

Me & my wife researched a coffee maker for our new house for months I''m talking 6 months; and that''s before we even bought the house. We both love capps & lattes so were looking for a single serve coffee maker. We looked at all of them Keurig, Tassimo, Senseo, Dolce Gusto. We were looking for variety, quality of brew & product, durability, & price.

Obviously Keurig gives you the most variety as they are the #1 Single Serve company in the US; they also do have a Fill-Your-Own-Coffee pod which is nice. Price was OK too, but the quality of the product & durability were issues. We''ve read mass amounts of reviews with horror stories of pods exploding, water leaks not something we wanted to get into. Plus with the Keurigs you need to get the expensive ones to get the best out of it & you''re still dealing with break downs regardless. Also, people complained about the temp of the coffee.

Tassimo''s coffee quality seemed OK. Price was good too we liked that you could buy the pods at BB&B easily. But once again we heard stories of pods exploding, but not to the extent of the Keurigs. But we were still very interested in Tassimo.

Senseo was never really in the game considering the quality is substandard & variety is small.

Which brought us to the Dolce Gusto line from Nescafe''. The variety is average in all honesty with only Nescafe'' producing the pods, but the price points of the machines were good actually the cheaper one I think was $89 & it has good reviews but we were looking at the expensive ones to see about quality & if it were worth it. Quality of the brew was something we heard good things of, especially on the higher models due to the pressure systems.

After it was all said & done we decided on this one, The Genio. We have been loving this thing! The quality of the standard blend is OK, strong but OK. The others are awesome! Capps have been great, Mochachinos have been wonderful, the latte was outstanding! My wife tried a Chai Tea Latte the other day & has been in love with it. The machine is a little loud, but in the other room its barely noticeable. We have been very pleased with the coffee maker & pods. Buy them in bulk on Amazon saves money & join their rewards program! 10 points per box 100 points = free box. You buy the bulk boxes from Amazon you get $30 purchase you can''t go wrong!

I got one of these for Christmas, and I wasn''t sure about it. I''m not a fan of buying capsules, but I figured what the heck. So I gave it a try, and I absolutely love this thing. It''s cool, it''s really small and doesn''t take up much counter space. It fires up in no time, and it makes a top notch cup of espresso. I really like the lungo pods (long shot of espresso 4 oz.) These come out a bit weaker than an espresso, but a good bit stronger than a regular coffee, and I''ve been drinking way too many of them lately.

The Americano (regular) coffee from this is decent, although the pod selection is less than a Keurig, but this is really an espresso machine. Also the pod based cappucinos are surprisingly good. Forget the cost of the pods, I''ll have saved enough Starbucks cash to pay for this in no time. Unless you plan on dropping a grand on a real espresso machine, this is the guy you want.

Also, it leaves a really nice crema. Very impressed, and couldn''t recommend this more.

Love the Crown Berkey. We were going to purchase the Big Berkey, never knew it came in this size. Being from Texas, bigger is better. We are only using 3 of the 4 elements and p0lan on buying some additional back up elements from this vendor. The price was right, delivered quickly, all good. We had heard that the spigots on Berkeys are sometimes problematic, we also ordered two back up spigots, also delivered quickly (seperately). We had now trouble assembling, directions we ok. I bought this product after a trial run with the berkey go (1 quart). Have tried (and previously owned/used) Brita, Pur, and ZeroWater. The Brita was ok, but left water occasionally tasting like plastic. The Zerowater always tastes like plastic and is much more expensive and not readily available. The Pur I used for years, but in the last 3 years the filters take forever to drain, though the water tastes good. I use a LOT of water. My town has issued lead warnings, so I wanted lead removal, great taste, and quantity--in that order. the Berkey Go proved to me that the berkey black filters could take stagnant tasting (dirt tasting) municiple water and transform it into natrual spring water tasting water. I went from choking down a single glass of water at work (my testing faucet) to drinking 1 to 2 quarts of water a day! JUST water! It is almost sparkling sweet after going through the filter! That was a eye opener. I had never been a big water drinker. always had to have tea, or something flavored, to mask to subtle favors infused in the municiple water supply. Having enjoyed the water from the berkey element for a couple of months, I finally decided on the size for my home. Berkey comes in several sizes,so the size decision was the main quandry. Being such a big tea drinker, I finally decided to buy the Crown for the volume it supplies. I have indeed used it to make tea, (multiple gallons on the same day, along with gatorade, and crystal orange drink) and still am drinking water straight from the Crown''s tap because the sweet spring taste just calls to me. The reservoir holds 8 gallons and filters way faster than the Pur and even the brita, the Zerowater would be close in time. But the taste knocks them ALL out of, well, the water. ;} I am now putting a gallon of filtered water in the fridge so that I have an Ice Cold option, but I still find myself going to the Crown''s tap after working outside in the heat. I bought this filter system mostly because of the high fluoride content in my area and also because I got tired of buying bottled water all the time. I went ahead and purchased 4 fluoride filters and attached them to the Berkey black filters. As far as taste goes, the water coming out of the berkey taste somewhat better but not a whole lot. It kinda still tastes like tap water. At least I know the most of the fluoride is filtered out plus whatever else is in the water. The only problem I''ve had so far is the spigot. About a month after I got it the spigot started to get stuck in the open position. You had to push down on it to get it to stop. I called the supplier and was told I will be getting another one soon. I also went ahead and bought a wooden stand for it because it didn''t look good sitting on the counter. And lastly, I liked the fact that in a crisis you can use almost any kind of water in the berkey (well water, rain, river, streams, ponds and lake water) and get clean & safe water to come out. I know, it''s a bad title, but I couldn''t resist. The Oxo Shower Drain Protector is the perfect solution to catching hair in the shower and preventing clogs. We just moved into a new house with a shower stall in the master bath. Our old place had tub/shower combos, so all we had was the white plastic kind of hair catcher that fits over a tub stopper. In the shower, it slid around and worse: it slowed the drain of water so much, you ended up standing in water to your ankles before you were halfway done. Maybe, like me, you''ve tried covering the drain with one of the cheap rubber tub filters carried by grocery stores, the ones that look like a sombrero with tiny holes in the crown--and discovered that while it blocks hair superbly, it also drains excruciatingly slowly and leaves you standing in an inch of soapy water during most of your shower.

This drain protector is the happy medium: it blocks hair quite well, but also drains fast enough that there''s only a slight accumulation of water. This product works really well. I have used plastic ones in the past and been disappointed. We regularly needed to use a drain snake due to frequent hair clogs, which works great, but not an enjoyable job. I''m amazed at the amount of hair this item catches. No wonder the drains clogged so frequently. Although its been a month with this drain protector, I''m confident I won''t be using the drain snake as often as I was. Well worth the money and looks as good or better than our normal stainless drain cover.

Installation consists of just setting it on top of the existing drain cover. My only issues are that it does slide if kicked with a foot and the slight dome shape can be inverted if stepped on, but it is easy to reverse by flipping over and doing the same thing.

I have a walk-in shower with stone tiles and the standard 4 and 1/4 drain plate in the center. I also have long hair, so every 6 months or so, I''ve needed to unscrew the plate and clear out the hair and soap causing a slow drain. My original plan to was to simply replace the standard drain plate with another one that had smaller holes. Except those kinds of drain plates apparently DO NOT EXIST. I cannot understand why! They come in all kinds of designs square holes, rectangular, chrome, whatever. Everything but smaller holes. How is the plumbing industry this stupid? So after searching everywhere, I bought this drain cover and it does the job fairly well. It''s bigger than a standard drain plate, so it doesn''t fit it into the slightly recessed area in the floor where the drain is. Again, I don''t understand why since that would keep it in place better! It''s slightly domed instead of flat, so I ended up turning it over so the domed area sort-of sits into the recessed drain. That and the rubber rim helps to keep it in place, but I have to be careful so my feet don''t nudge it. It does work very well to keep the hair out of the drain, though, so I''m keeping it. I''m going to use some fishing line, thread it through this cover and the drain plate below, and just tie the darned thing in place.

Anyone know if this filter replacement cartridge is the same as the New Market Naturals replacement cartridge? They look the same...cost about the same.

UPDATE: I have made a phone call to New Market Naturals and they told me the Sprite filters are exactly the same as their own.

I have very hard water which has taken quite a toll on my hair and skin. I ordered the "April Shower APHH Handheld Shower Head and Filter Includes Pulse Massage" in Feb. 2010, I have noticed a notable improvement in the my hair and slight improvement in my skin.

This is a very nice and affordable option to helping improve the water quality in a rental unit where water hardness/softness is not a tenant responsibility.

Since, at this time I noticed the New Naturals brand replacement filters cost less, I will order them vs the Sprite.

This filter seems to do a good job... at least it lowers the chlorine smell of my water. You can also reverse it after a few months to get more life out of it. I would say they seem to last about 6-8 months before they are "full" and need to be replaced because they are reducing water flow.

I love having a shower filter. The water feels better and smells better. Once I replaced the original filter I could not believe what it looked like and smelled like. I got this to make cold brew coffee concentrate and it works perfectly and easily. It is also great for large batches of hot brew too.

COLD BREW:

1. Add 12 scoops medium course grounds (scoop included)

2. Fill beaker half way with filtered water, stir grounds into water for about 35 seconds to saturate all the coffee

3. Fill remaining volume with filtered water leaving 1/2 inch room at the top

4. Place the bonus lid on french press and put in refrigerator for 12-24 hours depending on strength desired**

5. Once steeped for hours desired, remove lid and put filter lid on and press grounds to bottom of beaker

6. Mix coffee concentrate with water, either 1 parts concentrate to 2 parts water, or up to half concentrate and half H2O

I use 1/2 coffee concentrate, 1/2 milk over ice because I like it strong. My hubby prefers hot black coffee made with the concentrate and uses the half concentrate and half H2O ratio, then heats it in the microwave. We notice a definite absence of acid, which my husband prefers for taste reasons and I like because of taste and health reasons. When I am under stress, I have to take acid reduction pills for my stomach, being able to drink cold brew when under the gun has given me back my beloved cup of coffee without the stomach cramps.

TIP: Always use filtered water for cold brew since you will taste any and all funky flavors in your tap water. The water for cold brew doesn''t get boiled so these flavors, which may disappear with boiling for hot coffee, are very present with cold brew.

**If you have the overhead clearance in your fridge, you can put the filter lid on and press it down about an inch to keep all the grounds under the waterline. The top knob will stick up about 8 inches, so be careful not to hit the lightbulb in the ceiling of your fridge. I have noticed a small difference in flavor, it comes out a bit richer/darker than if I use the bonus lid.

HOT BREW:

3. Stir grounds into water for about 15 seconds to saturate all the coffee (saturation is quicker in hot water)

4. Place filter lid on beaker, but don''t press down until coffee has steeped for 4 minutes

This massive french press makes enough hot coffee to fill a carafe to the top and have a whole large mug of coffee left to pour. This worked great for a large party we had this past weekend, because I only have to make one pot of coffee instead of two like I did with our 8 cup Chambord press.

Final tip: To get the top off when you first take it out of the box, twist the top a half inch and then pull the press screen out to remove the lid. There is a twist latch in this lid that my other Bodum french press does not have, and the instructions for using this press are folded up INSIDE the closed coffee press, LOL. Thought I''d pass on this bit of advice for those used to their Chambord press :)

UPDATE: After using this product constantly for over 3 months, I have to say it is one of the all-time best things in my kitchen. I don''t have to take as much acid-reduction medication as I did while drinking hot brew. The system is so streamlined for cold-brew concentrate that I don''t even have to think about it. My hubby cannot believe how delicious cold-brew concentrate is heated up every morning, he says it is the smoothest way to brew coffee that he has ever had. I still highly recommend this product and will be purchasing more for gifts.

BONUS IDEA: I have been adding chicory in with my coffee grounds and it is amazing. Every batch is super smooth, rich and dark. I got it here on amazon on subscribe & save: Community Coffee Private Reserve Ground Coffee, Medium-Dark Roast, 100% Chicory, 12-Ounce Bags (Pack of 6). I add 3 tbls. of chicory to 8 bodum scoops of coffee beans. I read other places that chicory was great in cold brew, but I was hesitant about buying 6 bags without trying it; I am so glad I just spent the $13 to find out -I do not make cold brew without it now.

This is a large French press coffee maker that has a seal-tight lid that can transform it in to a cold brew coffee maker. I mainly use this for hot coffee but when my brother-in-law was visiting, I used it for cold brew; cold brew tends to lessen the irritation of the stomach than regular hot brewed coffee because it is less acidic. He can drink cold brew with no stomach irritation.

Pros:

-Large Size 1.5 Liter I don''t have to make 2 pots of press coffee with this size.

-2 tight fitting lids with rubber seals. The lids makes brewing cold in the fridge a snap; the coffee does not smell up the fridge or take on other odors.

-Glass Jug Glass is best for brewing coffee hot or cold; it''s easier to clean & odors don''t cling. And no concerns about BPA or plastic flavor.

-Nice stainless press mechanism that comes apart for cleaning. I take it apart & run it through the dishwasher along with the glass jug. I put the plastic body through also with no problems.

-Pouring lever & spout

Con:

-Plastic body. I prefer stainless steel because the plastic may break over time. But, the plastic does seem to be a good quality & the colors are fun. I own other Bodum products; they are durable and well made.

FYI: If you already own a coffee press, you can use it to make cold brew too. However, this version has the added benefit of size & the tight fitting rubber seals on both the press mechanism lid & the extra serving/storage lid.

My recipe for cold brew:

I use a 4:1 ratio of water to ground coffee.

I put 4 cups of fresh cold water in the jug and add 1 cup COARSE ground coffee. Stir it, put the press mechanism/lid on & place in refrigerator for at least 12 hours and up to 24 hours. After 12-24 hours, press the coffee down & either store the coffee concentrate (the liquid) in this container or another glass pitcher/jar after disposing of the grounds.

This press comes with a separate lid so you can store the concentrate in the jug but you will want to remove the grounds from it if you do that. Coarse ground coffee makes a better brew. The beans can become overextracted if they are too finely ground & some of the fine sediment will escape the press filter to leave sludge in your cup. You can pour your concentrate through a paper coffee filter but you will lose some of the taste complexity.

You can store the coffee concentrate in the refrigerator for a week with no problem.

To make hot coffee with the cold brew concentrate: Just pour half a cup of coffee concentrate & add hot water to taste. I usually do this in a 1:1 ratio (coffee concentrate to hot water). You can make 1 serving easily by half filling your coffee cup w/cold water, zap in microwave until hot & then add the coffee concentrate.

To make iced coffee with the cold brew concentrate: Put ice in glass, fill glass ¾ full with concentrate & top off with cold water & cream.

I love my coffee, but it does''t love me so much anymore. I drink a lot of coffee. Mostly espresso, straight up -no milk, no syrup, but after having a lot of heartburn and acid reflux (and later finding out I had an ulcer) I was told I had to give up coffee. The withdrawal symptoms were awful, even worse to me than the ulcer pain. I tried Caffeine gum, but it tasted awful (eventually that didn''t matter and I chewed it anyway just because the headaches from the lack of caffeine were so bad)

Next, I tried Pre-made cold-brewed coffee, but the shipping prices made that really expensive, and I really didn''t like the taste. I tried a couple of the toddy type systems too, and while they work, I found one system was too messy and the filter often clogged. The Second system leaked out all over the fridge during the night.

But this works. Easy, no-mess, It doesn''t leak, and the used grounds just rinse away when you''ve finished drinking the coffee. It is just a big french press, so If you already have one, you should use it, but this one is a great size, and seems very well made.

I find I like it best, after it''s brewed overnight, but I think it''s drinkable after 4 hours if you don''t dilute it.

The Bodum makes fine cold brew. The quality of the product seems good as well. The way the multi part lid is designed / manufactured places a lot of stress on the plastic guiding tube on the top piece. To get the lid on and off, you have to rotate so the spout is to the left

of the slot in the lower lid section. Then you twist it straight. To get the lid off, you twist to the left and pull up on the ball connected to the metal plunger. There is a thin plastic guide for the metal rod in the upper lid, and mine broke off....Just be careful as the lid is very tight,

and the part is fragile. I will have to order a new lid part from Bodum.

Here''s the real "weak link" for me with this brewer--the quality of the cold brew. When I bought this, I also bought a Toddy system. The toddy is designed for cold brew, and even though that system feels cheaply made, the quality of the cold brew is fantastic. It also makes 2 weeks worth of coffee with one batch, rather than the much smaller bodum. Once you get the hang of the schedule, either one works. It is just that you are cleaning up grounds more often with this than with the toddy, and in exchange you get a weaker cold brew as well.

Just got this coffee press because of the larger capacity than my 1 litre bodum coffee press (Brazil). When I opened the package all was well and good, however when I finally got the lid off it turns out that the rubber seal got stuck to the glass. No wonder I had a hard time opening the lid despite having twisted it into the proper open position! So now since the rubber gasket is torn from sticking to the glass, I have to find a replacement. The ring of rubber stuck to the glass had to be scraped off using my fingernail it was that stuck on. I hope they ship the newer stock without the gasket installed so other people won''t have to experience what I just did. Can''t return it since I''m overseas too, bummer.
