Culligan CW-F Sediment Replacement Cartridge Polypropylene Cord-Wound Save 22% Off

Culligan CW-F Sediment Replacement Cartridge Polypropylene Cord-Wound, 10 Micron, 12,000 Gallon Capacity, 2-Pack
  • Advanced Level 3 Filtration
  • Fits HF-150 & HF-360
  • Filters Fine (10-micron) sediment filtration: dirt, sand, silt, rust particles and scale particles
  • Cartridge life 3 months or 12,000 gallons
  • Ideal for well-water applications

So far Culligan probably has the best rating among all. But it''s made in China.

I''m worried because I don''t trust food/drink made from China. It''s not NSF''s approved list

Just search for "nsf seal water filter" and look for Culligan.Few concerns I have is we don''t know what material is used to glue things together. Some places said it could be

Melamine risin. I wish I didn''t read or know and just simply use this product. I wish this is made USA.

Clear Flow Long Life Disposable Bath Faucet Filter Save 23% Off

Clear Flow Long Life Disposable Bath Faucet Filter, WhiteI''m very happy with this purchase. I had found brushing my teeth very unpleasant because the water smelled so much like chlorine and other chemicals. I wished that they made something like a Brita/Pur filter for the bathroom faucet, like they do for kitchen faucets. I jokingly searched for it and was surprised to see it existed! I''ve been using it daily for 6 months with no signs of needing to be replaced. (It allegedly lasts a year, but I was skeptical.) The status light is a little difficult to see (I occasionally have to turn it on with the bathroom light out to see if it''s still green), and I do wish there was a greener option of replacing an inner filter rather than throw out the whole thing in a year.

I was very excited to receive this, because I wanted to bathe a baby using filtered water. I really wanted to love this, and give it 5 stars, as installation was easy, and the concept, great. However, I was led to believe, according to the description, that this would last 1 year. Naturally, because I was using this to filter baby bath water, I didn''t expect it to last a full year. However, I DID expect it to last at least 2-3 mos. I was sadly mistaken. I installed the day I received this, and ONLY used to filter the bath water. Again, I WAS expecting this to run out faster than even 6 mos., due to the fact that I was filling a baby bath halfway full. I was not, however, prepared for it to run out in 20 days time. Also, it technically ran out in ten days time (10 uses), because it was ONLY used every other day. In any case, it ran out much too quickly. I would like to be very clear that I was NOT filling a bath tub; rather, a baby bath, halfway full. To be fair, I would also like to mention that I have not tried to contact Clear Flow or Amazon, but I read reviews by other Amazon reviewers (on similar clear flow models), having had the same issue of filter not lasting anywhere near 1 year. I would have given at least two or three stars if the description had specified that this would last 6 mos.-1 year based upon very light, daily use. However, it did not, nor did the instructions, paperwork, etc. I guess it''s back to the drawing board! :((

the red light came up after about using it for two weeks. I wonder if it''s because my water is really THAT dirty or just the product itself doesn''t last that long like it says on the description for about a year. :(

We live in a superfund site. Its been since 1982 when they found TCE in our ground water, and its spreading fast. Even though the EPA and our water company is suppose it be working on it, I have not been confident enough to drink the water. I have been buying Eternal Bottle Water for about a year now. Now our local news station did a story about Chroium 6 in our water! The next day I order the bath filters, shower filters and kitchen under sink filters, as well as a garden hose filter. They are all NSF rated Standard ANSI 53 and 42. 53 is for all VOC''s and 42 is for Clorine and Particulate. Even Dr Oz did a story about our nation''s drinking water problems. Just installed my ClearFlow bathroom filters, they were easy to installed and I have a greater peace of mind.

I just moved to LA, and the water here is horrible. We installed filters in the kitchen, bathroom, and shower to get rid of the nasty taste (and the water was (is) giving my roommate and I acne, which we''ve never had in our lives). This filter says it''s supposed to last for a year, and the indicator light will tell you when it''s time to replace it ours turned red in 5 days. FIVE days. And we were making sure to use it really sparingly. I called their customer service number, and a different company answered and said it was no longer Clear Flow''s number. Their website also doesn''t exist anymore. It appears this place may have gone out of business. Maybe the filter works in places where the water is already pretty good, but NOT in LA. Or, maybe we got a defective filter. But either way, I don''t want a product from a company that apparently doesn''t exist. Don''t waste your time.

Hydro-Logic 31040 200-GPD Stealth-RO200 Reverse Osmosis Filter Save 24% Off

Hydro-Logic 31040 200-GPD Stealth-RO200 Reverse Osmosis Filter
  • Removes 98-Percent of chlorine and contaminants
  • Wastes approximately 25-Percent less than other RO Systems
  • Up to 200-Gallon Per Day
  • Automatic Shut-Off Cartridge
  • Wall Mountable Metal Bracket

I consider this a great product.

The taste of our drinking water unfiltered makes it very clearly "city water", with myriad chemical flavors. The taste after going through the filter is absolutely pure and flavorless. It fills a five gallon jug in about 28 minutes in a home with a normal PSI.

As far as upkeep: Cleaning the sediment filter is a two minute process which you shouldn''t have to do more than a few times a year. Other than that I''ve not done anything. Two years after purchasing it I''m doing my first replacement, replacing the original R/O membranes.

If you''re looking for a filter I can''t speak to the quality of the other ones but I''m very happy with this and would it again if required to remake the decision.

Mr. Coffee ISD13 12-Cup Replacement Decanter Save 31% Off

Mr. Coffee ISD13 12-Cup Replacement Decanter for FT and IS Series, BlackI ordered this replacement because the original one would leak from the black piece, water gets trapped in between the glass & the black top piece (not lid) and drips down the side after turning right side up after filling water tank. This replacement does the same thing so I believe it to be a manufacture flaw. This is the only replacement I have found to fit my coffee maker:(

I purchased this decanter as a replacement for one that I broke. This decanter is poorly designed. The opening is too small to make cleaning easy, and water tends to get trapped underneath the plastic ring surrounding the opening. The only reason I bought the replacement is because it was cheaper than buying a whole new coffee maker. If you are considering this coffee maker I would recommend moving on to another choice.

Well, after 2 years of nearly daily use my carafe broke. Reading the other reviews made me realize that I wasn''t the only one dealing with the annoying problem of the water/coffee dripping from the rim every time you poured liquid out. I wish it wouldn''t do that.... it drives me crazy having to reach for a rag every time I pour a cup of coffee!

I must say, I''m extremely disappointed in this product. In less than 12 months, I''ve already had to replace the damn thing 3 times because the glass keeps cracking due to the heat. How can the maker fail to make a coffee pot that can withstand hot temperature? it''s absolutely ridiculous. Couple that with the fact the rim is too small and it''s difficult to get your hand in the pot to wash it out, and that the handle has been loose on all 3 pots, I can safely say I''m never purchasing a Mr. Coffee coffee maker again.

This is the second replacement pot we had to buy for this pot. It is so expensive, and if you don''t treat it right, it''ll shatter. DO NOT leave the maker on with less than half an inch of coffee in the pot for any lenghth of time, as this will weaken the integrity of the pot. Saying that, this is the correct pot and I still would have bought it.

Crane Drop Shape Cool Mist Humidifier Save 12% Off

Crane Drop Shape Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier with 2.3 Gallon output per dayI received this humidifier 2 weeks ago after searching for a decent humidifier to replace the one i owned that was famous for robbing me in replacements filter, etc. fees. This thing fits the bill. The design is great, it''s super quiet, and gets the job done. In choosing this product i read all the reviews. The reviews that made me hesitant to purchase this were the complaints that said: a)that the furniture on and around the humidifier got wet all the time, b)that the machine did not cut off if empty, as advertised, c)that the machine is hard to clean, and d) that it makes a lot of noise.

With hesitation, I purchased the product in good faith.

I was immediately pleased by the design. I read the owner''s manual even though i thought it all was a "no brainer". The manual actually explained a)how to adjust the mist as to not wet the furniture around it, and b)that the machine will turn off when empty, but the light on the device will remain lite...obviously the part those that said the machine did not turn off failed to read, and c)how the machine is easy to clean with a vinegar or chlorine solution.

Cleaning is easy. I recommend using the bleach solution as bleach will kill anything..not to mention it also gets rid of the discoloration.

Lastly, the sound the comes from the machine is very subtle, but when u hear it, it is exactly like the soothing sounds of a filter running on a fish tank. It actually helped me sleep... having this white, very subtle noise.

I like this thing. My skin and nose are happy.

I hope this clarifies some of the ambiguity i found in the other reviews....

I purchased the Crane cool mist humidifier in Dec''10 and have used it, with great success, for many months. With all the negative reviews (about 20%) I almost didn''t purchase this machine. But I''m glad I did, because it works really well for what it is: a mid size/capacity humidifier.

First of all: ***this humidifier has a 2.3 gallon per day maximum output, with a .9 gallon tank.*** Amazon''s initial title for this (and many other humidifiers) mentions daily output capacity rather than tank size... this may be confusing, although the correct specs are prominently listed on the Amazon page fifth bullet point in the "product features" section. As for Crane (the manufacturer), their package clearly states a 2.3 gallon daily output, and .9 gallon tank size... The reviewers complaining about the "misleading name" should try emailing Amazon suggesting a title change on their website... instead of writing a 1 or 2 star review of the product. That would be more helpful and more fair.

As for the product itself:

A few buyers obviously received defective machines; this has to be expected on some level with any manufacturer.

But having read over the negative reviews, I realized that most of the complaints were due to improper use of the machine.

It is essential to read the instruction manual and use the machine as intended by design. Doing so will avoid the pitfalls described by most of these 1-2 star review writers. For reference, I have addressed their most common complaints below:

1) White dust buildup in the room: use filtered or distilled water. This is important if you have hard tap water. (85% of American homes do.) I run my tap water through a Brita filter; the exchange ion resin lowers the concentration of calcium carbonates, accordingly softening tap water. It also helps keep the humidifier cleaner by removing organic impurities, and I have had no white dust buildup. ***If your water is particularly high in mineral content, you should use distilled water, or else opt for a vaporizer-type (humidifying) machine, which creates water vapor free of white dust.***

2) Limited effectiveness: you are trying to humidify too large a room. In my 500 square foot living room level the machine helps a little; in my 150 square foot bedroom the machine is more than adequate.

3) Height of machine: the manual directs you to put the humidifier *at least* a few feet off the ground; there''s no reason you can''t place it even higher up if you wish. Doing so will disperse the mist more effectively.

4) Machine runs out of water: try turning it down to about 2/3 power instead of full power. The machine is practically noiseless at this setting and the water tank if actually filled to the rim will last at least 8-10 hours.

5) Machine makes bubbling noise on high: see #4 above.

6) Wet area forms immediately around humidifier: you have the machine turned up too high for the conditions in your room. This is explained in the instruction manual: you need to make sure the mist isn''t falling down onto the surfaces around the machine; otherwise moisture will accumulate on those surfaces. Turn the power dial down until the vapor stream is fully evaporating in the air.

7) Machine leaks: Take care that the water tank fits snugly into place, with no gaps. Also, make sure you have the clear rubber ring that fits inside the tank cap. During my initial setup, this little (1 1/2" diameter) ring came loose and rolled away, and I almost didn''t notice. The ring ensures a tight seal on your water tank cap; without it, I''m pretty sure the machine would leak.

8) Machine gets moldy: you are not following the correct cleaning routine, as described in the manual. You need to empty and rinse out the tank daily, and empty the bottom part of the unit too. Once a week you should use a white vinegar/warm water mixture in the tank and bottom of unit (see manual).

I hope this was helpful. If my humidifier breaks down I will certainly update this review.

We bought the Vicks cool mist humidifier first. it was so noisy in the nursery that we didn''t use it when our daughter was sleeping. We bought this one hoping that it would be a little more quite. This humidifier is the perfect size for a bedroom. The tank empties in about a day, so the water doesn''t sit around too long to get mildew or mold. The humidifier puts out lots of moisture, and is absolutely whisper-quiet! We have the penguin-shaped one for our son''s room, and this one for ours. Both are great.

Want Crane Drop Shape Cool Mist Humidifier Discount?

We bought this humidifier for the bedroom because we were waking up every morning with dry, cracked lips and sore throats and sinus due to the very dry air in the house during the winter. This unit pretty much solved the problem for us.

Pros:

Very quiet. I imagine if you set it next to the bed you could hear it, but we set it across the room and the only thing I hear is the occasional bubbling as it takes in more water.

Easily adjustable. The knob on the front that controls flow is infinitely adjustable, so you can get just the flow you want.

Easy to fill. Just take off the reservoir and fill from the sink.

Puts out enough moisture to humidify a fairly large room. Our bedroom is 16 by 20 feet, plus a master bath, and it makes a big difference in the humidity of the rooms.

Cons:

It doesn''t seem to automatically turn off when it runs out of water like the description says. Maybe ours is broken and maybe not, but it doesn''t turn off. No big deal except the wasted energy (which can''t be much) but I wish it did shut down.

I wish the reservoir was bigger. The size it is makes it easy to take and fill, but you pretty much have to fill it every single day. It''s a trade-off, but I would have preferred something twice the size that was a bit more difficult to fill due to size.

ERP1000-JG-S - Aquatec Permeate Pump 10-100 GPD

ERP1000-JG-S - Aquatec Permeate Pump 10-100 GPDI had purchased one of these permeate pumps for my reverse osmosis system from Apec several years ago. The reason I purchased it was because I ran a PVC line outside to the back of my refrigerator to provide filtered water for my ice maker and drinking water on the front of the frig. However, when I did this, the water pressure was so low, it would take forever to get a glass of water. However, once I installed this pump into my system, it made an incredible difference in the amount of water pressure I was getting. So, I would highly recommend this pump to whoever might be having low water pressure from their R/O system. My first pump lasted about five years, so I purchased this replacement. The nice thing is that it works off of the water pressure itself, so there is no electricity needed to run it.

Let me start off by saying this permeate pump was supplied with my reverse osmosis system, I did not purchase it from Amazon. Over the last two years I have gone through 3 of these pumps. My first pump lasted 12months, the second about 5months, and I think my third pump is dying after only a few months. There really is only one way to install it, so it''s not like I messed up the installation. It''s a nice feature to have when its working properly and it definitely increased the amount and pressure of RO water produced...but these units just don''t last. I can only figure the good reviews are based on pumps that have not been installed very long. I tried to contact the manufacture but they didn''t reply. I''ve read better reviews with the ERP-500 but I won''t risk being burned again. My warrantee is over and I will not be purchasing a replacement from this company, I''m going to an electric booster pump by a different manufacture, I hope that will be the answer. I was excited when I saw this pump was made in the USA, but this thing is junk and not worthy of such a label.

I have 90 psi of water pressure in my home but somehow the pressure coming out of my reverse osmosis system is a bit low. Maybe cause I have it running under the floor and feeding the icemaker in the refrigerator also. Anyway... add this very well designed device to your system and you can get enough pressure to fill a 12 cup coffee carafe in just about 20 seconds or so (on my system anyway). 1/4" press-fit lines. It does make a "spitting" sound every so often but it isn''t bothersome (I have my system under the kitchen sink). The incredibly interesting thing about this device is that it is able to boost pressure in your Reverse Osmosis tank without any external power. Really... I would like to take it apart and see how the hell that is done!! This is my 2nd one. My first one lasted about 5 years. Since it does have some moving parts inside it -it will wear out.

Oh yeah... I searched the Internt and got it here because it was the best price I could find. Other places were $65 on upward and one well over $100! Good to shop around. 15 minutes to install.

Want ERP1000-JG-S - Aquatec Permeate Pump 10-100 GPD Discount?

I have no complaints about the reliability or performance of this unitit was very easy to install and best of all it requires no electricity.

I bought this pump on 6-28-2009 and its still going strong. I use it for drinking water, maintaining two 75gal aquariums and various houseplants, so I would say probably heavier than average usage. DEFINITELY a worthwhile upgradeoverall better pressure and the recovery rate is much faster, so I assume its also saving a ton of water.(never compared before and after...)

My only complaint would be it''s a bit noisy, so try to mount it on a solid surface(like concrete). Mine is mounted to a wood wall in the basement and the ''clicking'' noise is transmitted into the structure so you can hear it upstairs a little bit. It really doesn''t bother me, but I know some people are more sensitive.

(the ERP500 is supposedly quieter, but its warranty is only 13mo instead of the 25mo on the ERP1000)

Hamilton Beach 43254 Ensemble 12-Cup Coffeemaker Save 35% Off

Hamilton Beach 43254 Ensemble 12-Cup Coffeemaker with Glass Carafe, BlackBefore purchasing the HB 43254 Classic Stainless 12 cup coffee maker I read the reviews like I normally do before making any purchase. I decided to purchase this coffee maker knowing that there may be some minor issues with it what doesn''t these days? After many years of buying coffee makers I have found there is no "perfect" coffee maker that will make everyone happy. You just need to decide what is important to you and your family. That said, after about three weeks of use I found it to be exactly what I was looking for it makes HOT coffee, the carafe DOESN''T drip and I didn''t need to use a manual to set up the clock and timer! If this is what you are looking for stop reading and purchase this unit now. Enjoy the coffee maker...

For those that really need to know more before purchasing continue reading:

This coffee maker uses basket shaped filters. So you can give your neighbor your unused cone shaped paper filters you may still have.

The water reservoir does have a rather small opening but it is not too small like some very expensive coffee makers I have seen. Some may find it easier to use a large cup a couple of times to fill the reservoir instead of using the carafe. Either way I never needed to turn the coffee maker sideways to fill the reservoir.

The water spout does swivel to allow you to install the filter and add coffee. You only need to move it once that is if you fill the water reservoir first. When closing the lid it will move the spout back into the proper position so you don''t have to remember to do it yourself.

I too had a defective carafe that leaked at the top between the plastic rim and glass. I called customer service, waited a few minutes, and spoke to someone in the USA. It was replaced within a few days at no charge. I sealed the original carafe until the replacement arrived.

I never had an issue with pouring a cup of coffee using the auto pause and serve feature. Besides, how often do you really "need" to have a cup of coffee before it is done brewing? If you are that desperate, set the timer so it is done brewing before you get up in the morning.

I purchased the Hamilton-Beach coffee maker after reading all its reviews on Amazon, and reviews for other comparably priced appliances. I had owned a Cuisinart coffee maker that died, but had been problematic all along, and I was reluctant to buy another of the same. Most of the H-B reviewers agreed about the product''s benefits and drawbacks. The drawbacks were very few--there are some minor design flaws, but nothing egregious--and reviewers consistently agreed that the H-B made coffee at a very hot temperature and maintained that. That was what sold me on the H-B.

I have owned it for about six weeks now and have not been disappointed. I think the H-B coffee maker offers a good value and good design for its price. It doesn''t have a lot of bells and whistles, but for me that''s an advantage. I don''t want a coffee maker that buys and grinds the beans, fills itself , and makes coffee at precisely 7.45 a.m. Those sorts of appliances have too many flaws, in my opinion (viz. the Cuisinart), too many moving parts (hence things that can go wrong), and too many features that I never use. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a user-friendly appliance at a fair price.

I read all the reviews before purchasing this (at Target) a week ago but decided to give it a try, anyway. I''m returning it today.

My experience was really no different than previous reviewers. On the positive side, the unit looks nice, is easy to use, and does MAKE coffee.

However, major drawbacks/dealbreakers (that do seem to be consistent with this machine):

(1) Makes very weak and not very good coffee more coffee and stronger blends don''t affect this.

(2) Need to let it sit a while for it to be hot enough (in my opinion); not ready right after brewing

(3) If you remove the carafe during brewing (as you should be able to) coffee continues brewing/spills all over

(4) Odd iridescent "presence" in the coffee; presumably plastic-related

(5) Poorly designed. Front of the unit (where all the electric and digital mechanims are) completely covered with condensation after each brew. Similarly, the internal parts of the unit (water, filter) never seems to "dry out".

Bottom line is that a $25 Mr Coffee machine makes MUCH better coffee. Me, I''m planning on paying more to just go for a Cuisinart. (I''m in this situation because my beloved Krups finally went and the current models aren''t as good as the older ones!) FYI, if you''re a one-cup a morning coffee drinker and don''t need to brew larger amounts for company, the Keurig systems make terrific coffee and are very easy to use!

I don''t remember ever having so much trouble trying to find a quality coffee maker, nor having to buy one so often before the last few years. The things I need are pretty basic: no leaking when coffee is poured, a handle that doesn''t wobble, easy water fill, a way to tell how much water is in the reservoir, no coffee grounds in the pot and coffee that is hot when brewed. Perks are things like a timer and automatic shut-off. To me, that is what a coffee maker is supposed to do, and it amazes me that the manufacturers can''t seem to get this. Sometimes they break down after a year, or just start making a mess on the countertop. Sometimes they have all the bells and whistles, but coffee has to be microwaved to get it hot enough. And sometimes the perks are added to machines that don''t even have all the basics. If you''re sick of the lack of quality too, and are searching for the least awful coffee maker, then good news. The only thing I can''t attest to is how long this Hamilton Beach will last. All the requirements for a good machine are met in this model. The price is excellent and the style is great. The handle is substantial and the pour spout is flawless. Preparation is an ease and the coffee is rich and hot. It has the perks to make life easier, looks great on the counter and makes a wonderful pot of coffee. It took quite a bit of searching, so I hope I can save others some time. This is the one!

Kitchen Utility Brush

Kitchen Utility BrushI purchased these hoping to be able to use them to clean the inside of my stainless steel straws. They are slightly graduated wider in diameter from the non-bristled 1/8 inch wire at the tip (the tip is coated with plastic so there is no sharp metal wire) to the end of the 3 inch length of bristles.

While they do not work for my intended purpose, they have been useful in other cleaning situations. Would I buy them again? No. It wasn''t cost effective to send them back.

I bought these brushes specifically for the tiny one. I use that one to scrub out the top of my spill-proof travel mug. It works quite nicely to get in those crevices. I have also found that they work nicely on other kitchen implements that have narrow openings. I am happy with these and they seem to be fairly durable.

Hario Water Dripper ''Clear''

Hario Water Dripper ''Clear''My wife bought this for me as a birthday gift. I am a coffee fanatic and this is my first dripper and it works great. It''s more than a great conversation piece. It produces coffee that is pure with no acidity. It doesn''t replace the 10 cup drip maker I have for guests, but it''s perfect for my demanding palate! I recommend high quality beans that are ground fine and fresh. Watch the youtube video for easy first time instructions.

I have made a few great jars of coffee with this and a few so-so jars. You need to get used to it and figure out the right balance. Unfortunately, this unit was rendered useless by my losing of the metal filter. Hario does not offer replacements for it, however, every single other part is available, so feel free to break/lose those. This really sucks.

I was cautious about purchasing this product after reading the reviews but decided to go with it anyway. The truth is it makes great coffee once you locate the instructions written in English and then follow them. My coffee shop purchases have gone down and previous coffee makers are shelved. You do have to be proactive because it takes about 5 hours to produce the coffee that then lasts about a week. Somethings, however, are just worth waiting for in life.

Kind of fun to look at, but you know the owner of it is a hipster d-bag.

I received mine as a gift (see first sentence) and wowwhat a gift! First, it''s enormous! 18" tall and 6 inches wide! Taller than most counters can accommodate with cupboards. It''s a tower of plastic. Second, it''s neither pretty, nor easy to use. The coffee it produced is so-so. I suppose if you have an ulcer, chronic heartburn or live in upstate New York then weak flavorless coffee is for you! But if you want a good, bold cup of coffeethen this is an expensive, flamboyant way to make sure you don''t get one. This is like buying an iPad to use as a cutting boardstupidly expensive, wasteful and everyone who sees you using it will instantly hate you forever.

KRUPS F4720057 Duo Filters Water Filtration System Save 47% Off

KRUPS F4720057 Duo Filters Water Filtration System for KRUPS Coffee Makers, 2-PackI purchased 4 Duo Filter F472 for my FMF5. These filters should last through all of 2009 if replaced every 3 months as stated on the box. I noticed my coffee tasting a little bitter over the past few weeks. We throw the carafe in the dishwasher along with all of the parts. I then decided to replace the filter a month early and I noted two shocking things. 1: the filter and the grey filter holder had mold all over it. We could not even pull the filter out without it sticking. 2: The base were the filter holder sits had a puddle of water in the unit. This unit has not been used in over two weeks. I have contacted Krups and they have stated that I need to wait for a supervisor to call me back (24-48hrs) and I should be using a calcium "calcify"cleaner in the machine "often". No exact amount of times but "often" was given.

Be aware that you might have to wipe the water out of the base under the grey filter holder.

Krups suggests :

Descaling

Descaling is necessary to keep your coffee machine running efficiently. The frequency of

descaling depends on the hardness of your water and how often you use the coffee machine.

If you notice the brew cycle has slowed it is generally time to descale the machine.

See the chart below:

Type of Water Without Duo Filter With Duo Filter

Water Filtration Water filtration

Hard 40 uses 80 uses

Soft 80 uses 160 uses

* Before descaling, remove the filter holder (k).

* You may use either the Krups descaling solution diluted in 8 ounces of water or 8 ounces of

white vinegar.

* Pour the solution or vinegar into water reservoir (b) and start the coffee machine (without

coffee).

* Allow half the liquid to run into the carafe, then switch off and let stand for 1 hour.

* Restart the coffee machine to complete the cycle.

* Rinse the coffee machine by running it through 2 full cylces with water only.

* On the timer models if the display continues to read "CALC" repeat the process again.

Makes the best coffee we have ever had. We have been using this filter for about 5 years.

Krups makes a great coffeemaker. Part of the reason the coffee tastes so great is because of these filters, which help eliminate the chlorine and other minerals. We make a full pot daily, and I generally replace the filters about every 90 days. Additionally, Handy House is a great merchant. Shipping was super fast.

I own a Krups 1010 pod coffee maker that uses this filter. For some reason local retailers have stopped carrying these filters and other Krups products. This mail-order purchase was a good buy, much cheaper than retail, but needed to be packaged better. The three boxes came crushed in shipment, but luckily, it did not affect the charcol filled filters. I would order again when needed.

I''ve been a previous owner of a faucet mount PUR filter that lasted for over 4 years before it finally broke. I purchased this particular model thinking that it would also last, but I was disappointed. A couple of months later, it deveolped a hairline crack just below the filter indicator. I thought I just might have accidentally hit the housing, so I purchased the same model again. Well, this same crack appeared, and now I have contacted P&G. I am seriously thinking of purchasing a different brand.

So this is my second PUR water filter mount. Both were this same model. Right out of the package they work great. It''s not entirely necessary as our water is already clean out of the faucet, but it does remove any particulates that may reside in the distribution piping and home piping, as well as removing the chlorine residual that is in most tap water. After about a year, coincidentally just as the one year warranty expires, the valve that bridges between the faucet and the filter begins to degrade. Now even when the filter is turned off, water still flows through the valve and through the filter thereby dramatically decreasing the lifespan of the filter since water is always flowing through it. This is a POOR engineering design that should have been addressed by this company. This is the reason why I''m giving it one star. I figured my first filter was just a fluke, but this problem was confirmed yet again on my second filter.

My recommendation:

1) Go for a faucet mount that you don''t have to physically turn to activate. I feel that the repetitive action of turning this up and down multiple times a day leads to premature fatigue of this product.

2) Don''t worry so much about ancillary features like lights, etc. The filter is what you should be concerned about since this is what is polishing your water.

3) Look for NSF Certification. NSF 42 is for aesthetic effects. Even better is the NSF 53 is for removing health related contaminants. NSF 58 is for reverse osmosis filters which removes even more chemicals than the 53, however I feel this is a bit overkill for a home filter.

4) Go for a product that has at least a 3 year warranty. That way you don''t have to keep spending $30+/every year on the same darn product. I''m surprised that this product has a 5 year warranty when the same model in my local Home Depot only had a one year warranty.

After doing some more research, I''ve found this product here:

Bestfilters Countertop Superior Water Filter System White with 1 Micron Carbon Block Water Filter

Price isn''t too bad and it is certified for NSF 53. The KX Matrikx PB1 filter has an ABSOLUTE pore size of 1 micron, which removes giardia and cryptosporidium as these guys are larger in size than 1 micron. Be careful of filters that claim a NOMINAL pore size of 1 micron as these can let 20-30% of particles greater than 1 micron through.

Hope this helps.

I was pleasantly surpised to see just how easily this filter installed on my kitchen faucet. Although I had great tasting water before its installation, I feel better now knowing that the water is "cleaner" than before. There are only two drawbacks that I see, namely, the filter often gets in the way when filling a pot for on the stove, and the replacement filters are not cheap---they each cost about as much as HALF the price of the original filter system. I have had my filter system for a bit more than three months, and the replacement indicator just became visible...time to spend money for a new filter cartridge!

While the filtered water from the Pur system tastes great it just isn''t worth the hassle. After trying both vertical and horizontal styles I have given up on Pur. I have been through 5 of them and none has lasted through more than 3 filters. The unit will start leaking and spraying all over the kitchen and since it is entirely plastic there is no way to repair them. I personally have had good luck with contacting Pur. Twice they replaced the unit at no cost but the replacements broke within a couple of months. But replacing shouldn''t be the answer. I don''t know what to buy next as every other brand seems to have similar problems. And the companies don''t seem to be trying to find a solution to the defects.

If you watched Dr. Oz yesterday then you know that he recommends filtered water over bottled. No more expensive bottle water for me. Its Pur all the way!

I have used Pur filters for many years and I too was disappointed when my most recent model leaked as mentioned by other reviewers. I decided to try to get to the bottom of the problem. Before I describe my findings I would first like to state that this pur filter is FAR superior to the Culligan filter so highly rated on Amazon. I have the Culligan version and users have no way to know when the filter needs to be replaced. It''s replaced after a specified number of months whether one runs 10 gallons or 10000 gallons of water through it. Thats not for me. I want to KNOW when my filter needs to be replace and the Pur accurately provides users with this info. In addition, the new water switching mechanism on the Pur is MUCH more smooth and effective than the Culligan.

I decided to "like" Pur on Facebook and this is what I discovered: There are, indeed, many people experiencing leakage and complaining on the FB page. Pur is very quick to respond to this on FB. The problem centers around one of the adaptors that does not have enough threads to be effective and it leaks. Pur will replace this adaptor free of charge with a more effective model. I called in and their automated phone prompts were simple, my adaptor arrived and my Pur functions flawlessly.

According to Pur, the adaptor has been replaced but some retailers (Amazon) still have the model with the older adaptor. The new adaptor is part of the currently shipping units from Pur.

I use Amazon reviews for EVERYTHING. In this case, the Pur has gotten a bit of a black eye but it is, by far, the best low priced filter available.

Expobar Office Control Espresso Machine

Expobar Office Control Espresso MachineI have owned this machine for three years and have never regretted it. Ok, I regretted it a little when I had to get it repaired once, but it is a straightforward and simple machine, with a double boiler so you don''t have to switch temperatures between making espresso and steaming milk.

I''ve owned this machine for over a year now and it has been a workhorse. There are days that I pull 3 triple shots (using a triple basket and bottomless portafilter) a day just for me. Then there are days where I have company over and can quickly make lattes, mochas, and americanos for my guests in very little time. I use this with a Nuova Simonelli MDX grinder (flat burr). I''ve owned cheap machines in the past with single boilers and pressurized portafilter baskets, but this thing blows them away. If you are looking for an e61 HX machine on a budget, look no further.

My routine is this:

pull 4-5 ounces of water as a flush, but also to heat my two 2.5 ounce shot glasses.

dry the portafilter (i use a triple basket)

grind 18-21 grams of coffee into portafilter, distribute (north, south, east, west), tamp ~ 30 lbs

insert portafilter and pull 2.5-3 oz shot, stopping the pull when "blonding" starts, around 35 40 seconds (22-30 for a double shot).

I would recommend getting a different steam tip. I found both a 3-hole and a 4-hole tip from another site, Chris''s Coffee. The 3-hole is a nice improvement where I can go from about 60-seconds to steam ~ 8 oz of milk, down to about 35 seconds. The 4-hole tip is even quicker, though it takes much more practice to get latte art quality microfoam. Using the 4-hole tip, I can steam 8 oz of milk in around 20 seconds and the steam power is amazing. The problem with the original single-hole tip, is that it restricts the steam too much in my opinion. It makes it easy to make great foam, but it takes too long.

Overall, this is a great machine. It is built like a tank and the programmable buttons are a nice feature. I really like the auto backflush clean cycle that it has. Eventually, I''ll probably have to send it to a shop to get descaled, but that is the case with an HX machine, from what I''ve read. Anytime you are repeatedly heating water, it''s going to require a descale at some point. I have a whole-home water softener and RO water at the tap, but I still use the included filter / softener in the water tank to cut down on the scale.

Buy Expobar Office Control Espresso Machine Now

I have owned this machine for 8 years and for 6 it was working. Overall this is a good machine. It is not a easy machine to repair with its enclosed design. It is very good for what it was designed for: fitting a small area and keeping the cups warm for use. Its greatest feature for our family and office use has been ease of use and the ''quad'' espressos. The largest issues are fluctuations in heat at the group head resulting in variations in quality of the brew. (The ''heat'' eventually will fry the nice push button controls.) Getting repairs are expensive and hard to get in some areas.

Learn as much as you can about the machine and how it operates and clean and flush it regularly (the manual and paperwork it comes with is worthless). Replace the cheap plastic water container (the least they could have done was include a stainless container over the plastic) with a direct plumbing line and filter will save a lot of grief. The container will run out of water more often than you think, so check and fill often. The grind is very important in this machine, too fine and you''ll have a long day of cleaning it for their is a second area behind ''the group'' that will retain the powdered nectar and clog a secondary screen. If unaware, you will be buying new pumps and relays and such.

The baseline question to ask is the convenience and ease of use for this time (5-6 years) worth 1200 dollars to you? If it is, Is the 700 dollar repair also worth continuing down the road with the unit (you will grow to either love or hate) at that 6 year mark? If this is your office machine, it probably is, but if it is for home use, you may want to consider the above.

Haier HU335W Ultrasonic Cleaner Save 58% Off

Haier HU335W Ultrasonic CleanerI read the 1st review of this item, and ordered the cleaner anyway, hoping for better results. Indeed my Haier machine works quite well. BUT...don''t expect jewelry and coins to come out sparkling clean, like the pictures and the hype. Instead, think of the machine as a shortcut to a lot of scrubbing with a toothbrush. Earrings gunked up with hairspray were somewhat cleaner after a few cycles; but then after just a short scrub with a soft brush, they were as good as new! Same with diamond rings, etc. The cleaner helped greatly, but did not clean everything immaculately all by itself. The cleaner really gets into the nooks and crannies in watchbands, etc., but again, some follow-up is needed with a brush.

In my opinion, it is definately worth it''s purchse price.

I''ve been using this machine once a month to clean my wedding rings and three years later they still look new. Does a great job of removing the buildup behind the diamond setting where a toothbrush just doesn''t quite reach. I also like the fact you can use plain water.

This is an inexpensive, good looking, and efficient enough cleaner, but may have very limited life due to faulty components. I''ve purchased three of these, and know now it was a poor investment. The first stopped working after 5 months, and thinking it just bad luck, bought two more; one, I gave as a gift and reportedly is still working, but the second stopped working for me after almost a year of regular use. It works well, but you''ll take your chances with this unit.

I should point out that Dow Corning does not call their product silicone lubricant either on the tube or on the box, nor do they specifically use the word "silicone" in the ingredients. They call it "Dow Corning Compound 111 Valve Lubricant and Sealant."

Brita Riviera Water Pitcher Save 14% Off

Brita Chrome Water Filter PitcherThe Brita system is the best I''ve seen for home filtration. The water tastes pure and clean. I would recommend this for anyone and the savings over bottled water is astounding. In many cases, it even tastes better.

Contrary to advertisement, this system is very quick and easy. We are giving this as gifts to our family this year for Christmas.

I live in military housing that''s been around since WW2. Even though they''ve FINALLY decided to get around to changing the water pipes, I''m still not too thrilled about drinking the tap water.

Anyways, for the past few years, my family has been using bottled water. I estimate that we easily spent about 1/2 a grand on it a year. On just WATER!!!

At the store, I came across one of these and decided to give it a try and I''m so glad I did!

For one thing, the product itself is not that expensive, and maintaining it is cheap since you only need to replace the $3-$4 filter every 4 weeks.

I was so impressed with it, I rushed out and bought a 2nd, so I could have one pitcher for the refrigerator and the other available at the counter.

I really like the filter replacement indicater on it. It''s easy to set and with how busy my life gets, buying filters is the last thing on my mind. So, it''s nice having this there as a reminder.

I also like that it''s dishwasher safe. (except for the top part, due to the filter replacement indicater-but that can be easily hand washed) So, every few days, I just put it through the dishwasher and it gets it nice and clean.

The only drawback is that it''s hard for my grade school and pre school kids to use, so it''s not very kid friendly. So, I have to pour for them every time they''re thirsty, but it''s not a big deal to me, so I won''t dock any stars from my rating.

I highly recommend this for anyone who won''t drink tap water!

Sharp design, only problem is they put form over function when designing it. First problem, if the water hasn''t drained completely from the upper (non filtered) basin, and you try and pour the pitcher, the unfiltered water pours out with the filtered water. Second problem, when you fill it up, if you let the water overflow the basin, the first thing it does is drain into the filtered basin. In the older round designs, the upper basin was water tight with the lid on, so you could pour out filtered water before the upper basin was empty. If you overflowed the upper basin the water would got over the side and not into the filtered basin. This allowed the user to set it under the sink and not have to stand there for 30 second to shut off the water. They took a definite step backwards with this design. It''s really amazing that in the year 2005, such bad product design is still making to the store shelves.

Want Brita Riviera Water Pitcher Discount?

Other reviewers have said the same but I will reiterate:

--Filter timer is a joke. It only counts time, not gallons filtered. I don''t need this because we already own several calendars.

--Sectional lid must have been designed by the marketing department. They fit together awkwardly and fall off easily. If you try to pour a class of water with even a little still left in the upper chamber, the whole assembly falls apart as you are pouring.

--Lower compartment easily contaminated by unfiltered water.

--My unit grows ALGAE in it after about 10 days. You would think that I must leave it on a sunny window sill, but I don''t. It lives on the kitchen counter and I live in the Pacific Northwest where it is cloudy 9 months out of the year. So, anyway, the unit has to go in the dishwasher once a week (hand washing doesn''t cut it....algae grows right back). Previous Brita (we''ve had many) and PUR pitchers did not have this problem.

As a consumer I want to ask: What is so friggin hard about designing a decent water pitcher for cripes sake?!!!

Generally this pitcher demonstrates what is wrong with so many companies that make consumer products. They pay damn little attention to engineering a good product and put all their effort into giving it "purchase appeal" and marketing it.

Try something else.

Electrolux Ergospace Green Canister Vacuum Save 45% Off

Electrolux Ergospace Green Canister Vacuum, EL 4101ASince I''ve spent the past 24 hours (or more) researching vacuums -and bought two to try out at home, side by side -I thought I should share my findings with the rest of you.

First off, my 23-year-old Hoover canister finally died on me a few weeks ago. I''d had the thing at the shop maybe once for some work, but other than that, it still worked like a charm til the very end. It had a self-propelling power head that roared like a elephant and scared small children and pets, but it but really sucked the dirt in its heyday. It was sort of scary on hardwood, but I made do. After all, it was practically a member of the family -the same age as my oldest son.

So when it died, I knew it would be a hard act to follow. I knew I wanted a canister. To tell you the truth, what I like most are the long wands that I use to clean everything from ceiling fans to air vents to baseboards. The little attachment hoses on the uprights just didn''t seem like they''d do the trick. I liked the idea of bagless, though I''d never tried one. The guy who cleans my carpet once a year recommended Dyson. After looking at Dysons, reading reviews and seeing the prices, I decided I didn''t want to spend that kind of money.

In the end, I decided to test-drive two vacuums: the Electrolux 4101A Ergospace Green Canister ($149 at Costco) and the Hoover MultiCyclonic SH40060 ($149 at Target.) Both sounded great online, so I decided to buy them both, assemble them and do a side-by-side comparison.

Bottom line: The Electrolux, cute and "green" as it is, is going back. The Hoover is staying.

The Hoover isn''t as well made as my 23-year-old dearly departed that''s obvious. But it seems far more solid than the Electrolux. I nearly broke the Electrolux simply trying to unsnap and resnap the filter compartment -the plastic seems thin (yes, I know it''s recycled) and flimsy. I can''t imagine it holding up a year -I''m not sure it will last a month. Same thing with the plastic hose, which also seems flimsy compared to the Hoover. Even the power nozzle-heads (two of them, which I can''t imagine wanting to swap out very often) seem sort of cheap. On the plus side, the telescoping wand works very well and is nice and long, the 3-in-1 crevice tool is sort of ingenious once you figure it out (no help from the manual there!) and the motor has variable speeds, which is neat. Another negative: The hot air "exhaust" blows out straight up at you -I felt like I was in a wind tunnel (a hot wind tunnel) if I got too near the canister.

The Hoover, on the other hand, snaps together neatly with lots of clever, well-designed little latches. The bagless design seems very easy to use, and economical. Two filters, both washable. The wand telescopes, not quite as smoothly as the Electrolux, but it''s fine (much better than the two-part wand in my old Hoover.) The tools (just two and admittedly not great) store neatly in the rather heavy hose handle. The handle has to be heavy, I guess, because it contains the power switch which is another big improvement over my old Hoover (and the Electrolux), where the power switch is in the canister, which may be some feet away away from you just when you want it most.

But in the end I wanted a vacuum that could clean. So I decided to run each through its paces on my hardwood floor. Fairly dirty and dusty, since as I said, my old Hoover died "a few weeks ago."

The Electrolux was first up. It wasn''t bad, though the blowing hot air was a bit bothersome. It was quiet and it moved easily along the floor. It''s lightweight and easy to pull. But there was one stubborn Christmas tree needle stuck in the baseboard that just wouldn''t budge, even though I went over it again and again. Christmas tree needles are my litmus test.

So out comes the Hoover, to see what it can do. It''s a bit heavy, but feels solid and sturdy in a reassuring way. It''s much quieter than my old vacuum. I can actually carry on a conversation while I''m cleaning. I can hear the doorbell ring.

And when it gets to the Christmas tree needle -wooooosh! Gone. Just like that.

What was I thinking? Momentarily swayed by a cute green bungee-cord (what''s that for, anyway?) and the promise of being green and environmentally correct, I nearly forgot the most important rule of vacuum purchasing. A vacuum needs to vacuum well. I think the Hoover MultiCyclonic and I will have a beautiful life together. And it''s sturdy little blue body is growing on me.

I picked this up at Costco for considerably less than I see it advertised elsewhere. I have many unhappy vacuum experiences and thought was just fated to hate the product or spend big bucks. This one is just the ticket for me, on a budget but living in a kingdom of cobwebs and pet hair. I have vaulted ceilings with beams, and this is the first time I have not had to stand on a chair or lift the vacuum canister onto a counter to reach every nook and cranny. Long hose, long cord, very portable, and wow, it REALLY does adjust when you go from bare floor to carpet so that you don''t get sucked down onto the carpet. The suction adjuster is easy to use, but I didn''t even need it. Love the bare floor setting, which has little stiff brushes that loosen debris that might be a little stuck to the floor. I also have cabinets off the floor with space underneath, and this is the first time i have been able to easily reach all the way under cabinets and furniture with out having to assemble some sort of contraption or get under the furniture. Don''t care about headlights, as long as I can get in and out under that couch! The cannister follows smoothly along, and because the hose is so long, I actually pull it less than with my last one--actually everything about it feels smooth. Wand is very easily adjustable and actually is long enough for a tall person to be comfortable. The accessory tool is very simplistic, but it does fit in the vacuum and I always seems to lose all those tools anyway. For someone who is happy with just a small round brush and a crevice tool, it''s fine. If you want a lot of fancy accessories, you''ll need to purchase them separately or look elsewhere. I have mostly bare floors, so I can''t speak to its performance on carpet. But I''m happy to not have to contort to hold down the corners of area rugs to vacuum over them. I still hate vacuuming, but at least I am not having ranting fits about how much I hate the tool during the process.

Down side: The filster is supposedly washable, not sure about that. The bags are pretty small, but that is the trade off for having the canister be very portable. I have''t bought any bags, but I may spend a fortune on them.

Buy Electrolux Ergospace Green Canister Vacuum Now

Just bought this baby at Costco. Overall, I rank it very good, and I''ve been looking for a long time for a cannister vac. worth buying -most of them look like they should be marketed thru Toys-R-Us. And, guess what, it''s made in Hungary big surprise and well made at that. It''s well engineered and very powerful. Has a long vac. hose and a long, retractible power cord. The machine also runs fairly quiet. And, it has a continuously variable, motor speed control for varying the degree of vacuuming power something I''ve never seen in a vacuum.

It does require three filters to operate: A rather smallish conventional bag on the intake side, a flat rectangular filter on the exhaust side, and a "motor filter" whose purpose I have yet to ascertain. These are collectively hyped as "HEPA" filtration, a term that has been misused to the point of being utterly meaningless. Be prepared to spend money for filters.

By way of accessories, it comes with two floor vac nozzles, and little else. If you want any other decent acc.''s, you will have to buy them separately (not an easy or inexpensive task). It does include some sort of small "multi-purpose" tool which is basically a throw-away. But, the hoses do take standard 1 1/4" acc.''s.

About the manual: It has the obligatory (and utterly worthless) safety warnings. It is written in three languages (one of which is English). The diagrams and the fine print are almost unreadable which is a big drawback, since, with three filters to change, and lots of neat little features, a nice big foldable instruction sheet would be much easier to use.

On the whole, however, it definitely fills a market niche for a reasonably well made, utilitarian cannister vac. I will probably buy another one as a spare.

The 4101A appears to be the new version of the (also high-rated) UltraSilencer EL6984A. I''ve seen mention of that on several other sites, even though the Electrolux web site lists both models as being current. So, you should have a look at the reviews for that model as much of the commentary should apply to this one.

It works great; tons of suction and minimal noise (it is far quieter than my upright, which was already a quiet model). The hose is 9'' long, which in my opinion is a perfect length. Six feet is more common, but with the extra 3'' you don''t have to pull the canister around quite as much and can more easily access the tops of cabinets, etc with the hose attachments.

The telescoping wand and floor nozzle are fairly agile & once you get the hang of how the joints bend it is easy to clean underneath tables, chairs, couches, etc. You need minimal clearance (only about 2.5-3") to get under something I found no furniture in my home that I couldn''t get under with this vacuum. Coming from an upright this is a huge improvement and I suspect it will allow me to keep the house much cleaner overall.

The "turbo head" works well on two of my three area rugs. They are all medium/low-pile and around 6''x8''. This is not a power head, but has a rotating brush driven by airflow. It is surprisingly powerful if you attempt to stop it with your hand you''ll notice that it''s got quite a bit of kick... However, as the head becomes starved for air the head (obviously) loses power I suspect this is why it works better on some rugs than others; they must have a weave that allows more air to get through. A true power head (which contains a motor to drive the brush) would not have this problem.

That said, all three of my area rugs came out looking just as clean as they do with the upright. And, even with the normal head (not the turbo head) the rugs cleaned up nicely though they lack the "just vacuumed" look that you get from a rotating brush. The turbo head gives you the vacuumed look and I imagine cleans a bit more thoroughly than the standard head, but not quite as well as an upright vacuum or true power head. Is this a problem? I don''t think so, but if I lived in a house with lots of carpeting I''d opt for a true power head. The turbo head gives you a little something extra when needed, making this an ideal vacuum for people living 90-100% carpet-free.

The "green" moniker attached to the vacuum is a bit weak if you ask me. Sure, they used recycled plastics and it ships in a cardboard box but to suggest that this vacuum is somehow better for the planet than others is a stretch. In fact, until my research showed that this model is worthy of consideration for its cleaning abilities I had discounted this model as "probably a piece of junk that they expect people to buy purely based on the ''green'' label". Maybe it''s working for them, but I''d suggest that people would take this vacuum more seriously if they focused more on it''s cleaning capabilities and make the green bit more of an aside: "Hey, this vacuum is great and by the way, we''ve made the shell from recycled plastics because that''s the environmentally responsible thing to do".

Finally, I recognize there''s a trend toward bagless vacuums but I''ve opted for a bagged model for a couple of reasons. First, I have a bagless "dust buster"-style hand vac. While I think bagless is ideal for that style of vacuum, it is a bit dusty when emptied and you need to thoroughly wash the whole system every couple of months or else stuff will start to grow in there (it''s used a lot in the kitchen). Second, as a group bagged models consistently outscore bagless models in Consumer Reports. It seems that the whole bagless trend has more to do with the Dyson marketing machine than it does cleaning power.

After reading the reviews of this product I was excited to purchase. Unfortunately, the bottomline is the product does not have much suction. It is great for a quick vacuum of the kitchen floor to pick up some residual daily dust -but for anything more than that, I would not recommend. Moreover -the bags are not the easiest to take in and out. Not happy with my purchase. Off to buy another vacuum

Gaggia 14101 Classic Espresso Machine Save 34% Off

Gaggia 14101 Classic Espresso Machine, Brushed Stainless SteelWhen I got my Gaggia more than several decades ago, it was not yet called a Classic. It was called a Coffee Gaggia. About 20 years ago, some minor changes were made, and the unit was renamed Classic. The new "Coffee Gaggia" is not the same as this machine.

This machine has a robust build, and high quality parts. Its tank heats the water quickly, and to a proper temperature, and the pump is powerful enough to do the job properly. I would strongly recommend using filtered water, especially with a low mineral content, so that deposits do not build up in the tank.

My version has an all metal frothing wand, which does as good a job as the skills of the operator will allow for. The newer versions have a "turbo frother," and an optional milk frother that will take the guess work out of frothing and place foamed milk directly into the cup. I can''t comment on these newer features, but perhaps they will allow a better job to be done by those with less experience.

The newer models are brushed stainless, while the original models had an appliance enamel finish. Since the old finish allowed water to penetrate under any scratches or imperfections in the finish, this was a particular problem near the portafilter holder and underneath the drip tray. The new version should retain its finish far longer, although the old one still does not show any wear in places that are visible with the machine assembled.

Minor differences are that the new machine has a more robust looking steam knob that was moved to the side, and the thermostat light, which indicated that the unit was heating, has been replaced with a "ready" light that is integrated into the coffee switch and signals the opposite.

In the time that I''ve had my machine, I''ve had only minor problems with it. My steam thermostat needed to be replaced once, and the light on my power switch stopped working. These were larger issues before the Internet made it easy to find parts, as these items are hard to find locally. The other problem is that if the unit is not used for extended periods, and the tank is allowed to dry out completely, and the water used was hard, then some parts are subject to clogging. The troubleshooting steps in the manual are not helpful for these sorts of problems. The machine can be disassembled for cleaning by somebody who is mechanically inclined, but unless you feel comfortable with appliance repair, you are better off avoiding the situation by using filtered water, and/or descaling regularly, especially before any long term storage.

The other "parts" issue is that the gasket for the filter basket should be considered a consumable part, and should be sold by every dealer as an accessory, rather than just by repair facilities. The machine really should have included an extra one since this is the only part that will definitely wear out with regular use. It might take a few years or longer, and is easy to replace, but it will wear out.

Overall, this is a well built machine that should last you many decades. Although it seemed expensive when I bought it, it has averaged out to about 6 cents a day to own it, which was well worth the price, and I''ll probably get another few decades out of it.

If you have used cheaper espresso makers, you will appreciate the robustness and quality of this unit. Features such as the three way solenoid controlled valve might be transparent to the user, but the lack of them become clear when you use a cheaper machine. This one just keeps going and going.

For the price, I''d give the espresso making part of this machine 5 stars. The portafilter and brew group are substantial and well-made. I''ve worked at two espresso shops with commercial machines, and the parts on this moderately priced Gaggia are nearly as heavy and substantial as the big multiple-thousands of dollars machines. I''ve had the machine for 4 days and have been brewing shots with Starbuck$ pods. The toggle switches are easy to use, the reservoir is easy to fill, and the shots are aromatic and full of crema every time. However, the steaming wand takes a star away from this machine. It does not rotate in every direction like the comparably priced Starbucks machine. This makes it hard to remove a cup full of frothed milk from under the wand without spilling. Also, the plastic frother contraption is silly. Actual frothing capability is pretty good, though the plain metal tips on the commercial machines produced finer microfroth, and were more fine-tuned to the trained barista''s hand. Overall, it''s a good-looking machine, and I''m satisfied with it for my main purposes iced lattes and americanos, and straight double shots, all of which do not require use of the steaming attachment. This is a good entry-level machine that will brew you good shots, and look good on your countertop. However, I''m expecting to outgrow it and move up to an Isomac with more refined steaming capability within a few years.

I bougt the $200 breville ESP8XL when I started my bean habit and was considerably satisfied. With the breville I learned just how tempermentle espresso can be. The grind, the tamp pressure (with a twist) as well as the temerature of every item the coffee contacts in the pull will effect the taste of your espresso. (To warm up cups fast, fill them with water and put them in the microwave for a minute and your set.)

I learned alot in 2 weeks and now considered my capucchino concoction worthy and much better than chain coffee houses. I use Lavazza preground espresso coffee and love it, its smooth satisfying and has an excellent crema. I''m considering a grinder but with the Lavazza (black can) I''m putting it off for a while.

I ordered the Gaggia Classic on impulse due to a sale hoping to improve my pulls with the presumably better machine. Which is better, well the short story is I packed the Breville up for return 2 days later.

The Gaggia arived well packed but after setting it up the pump didnt work. Disapointed but not wanting to give up on it. I opened the top easily with a screwdriver and found that the rubber gromet around the pump had loosened from its mount and pulled a wire (with slip on connector) off its termination point. I slid the motor gromet back into place and remedied the connection easily. From there the machine operated perfectly.

Gaggia Pro''s: Better portafilter. Filter is easier to clean larger in surface area and the used coffee pucks come out easier and much drier. Also the espresso comes out of one hole in the middle and is then seperated into channels that flow into the 2 cups you see in the picture. The Breville has a smaller portafilter that is harder to get in place without looking and has 2 holes in the bottom. Most of the time the majority of the water came out of 1 side catching up at the end of the pull.

The plastic turbo frother steams faster, drier and is much easier to clean than the stainless tube provided on the Breville. The milk froth, adheres like paint to the metal tube and has to be scraped off with a knife or a brillo pad. Steam control and overall heat temperature is better on the Gaggia.

Breville pro''s: easier to fill with water, drip tray is easy to handle. Dont think this doesnt matter. If you want your espresso hot, you need to run water thru the portafilter to heat it up and not lose temp. The excess water goes in the drip tray. You want this to be easy access!!! The gaggia''s works fine but the Breville''s fits better and is easier to handle.

If your considering this machine but are concerned with the cost, get the Breville ESP8XL For $200, it makes a nice espresso but use a quality cofee thats properly ground. If theres no concern go for the Gaggia. I got it here for $400 and feel the extra $$$ was worth it.

Update: September 2010

My Gaggia is still going strong. Temperature and pump strength have not varried at all. I''ve paired it with a Rancilio Rocky Burr-Grinder which was well worth the investment. I buy local italian roast coffee for $7.50/lb and make Espresso better than any Starbucks around. I''ve seen other''s indicate that the plastic frother is poorly designed and falls off. I''ve had no problem with mine but I clean it thorouhly after every use. I admit I don''t use it as much as when I first got it but it is always available for a mid afternoon espresso or an after dinner capachino. My only complaint is with the design of the water tank. You can fill it through the top but you will have to take it out at least weekly to clean as the standing water will attract bacteria after a while. Removing the tank requires the disassembly of a few parts. It''s a trivial complaint but worth noting, fore if you dont clean the tank you can probably damage the pump.

I''ve used this machine extensively for the last 12 months. In every aspect, I learned a lot about making that still elusive perfect espresso: the bean, the grinding, the water, the temperature, the cleaning, the back flushing, the descaling, you name it. The purchase of this machine started a very rewarding journey into the unknown. From thermodynamics through agricultural techniques, I''ve read a lot. But only recently I started a new stream of Googling when I researched how to make a more thorough maintenance of the machine. I''m a chemical engineer, so by training, I know that machines need more than cosmetic cleaning to keep working.

And here is when the boiler issue comes along. Among the key components in any espresso machine, the boiler has obviously a very high importance. It''s here where a truly exceptional machine shows it''s quality. From the steam "disponsable" ones using stainless steel to the almost coffee bar quality solid brass boiler machines, the difference is astounding in terms of temperature stability and durability. There are cheaper machines that use aluminum instead of brass in the boiler. Like the Gaggia Classic. And that I didn''t know when I bought it. Aluminum you see, corrodes VERY fast. Even if it creates a self protecting layer of aluminum oxide when exposed to the elements, it DOES corrode and it DOES end it''s life in much faster way than a brass boiler. Why? simply because brass doesn''t corrode as fast, and if you need to descale or clean a brass boiler, you can be much more aggressive in what you use to do that cleaning.

So, my boiler is now showing significant amounts of corrosion. I used bottled water and cleaned the machine every week extensively, used recommended anti-scaling and detergent agents and followed every rule. But next year this machine is ready for a full boiler replacement. Unacceptable in my mind. Go for the Rancilio Silvia (brass boiler), because that''s the one I''m buying soon. It''s well worth the extra money.

I''ve had this machine over a year now, so I can put a review after extensive use of the machine.

The espresso quality you can get is truly exceptional. As you will quickly find out, you need to have a great burr grinder, which will cost you at least $300. Make sure you follow the known rule of having a better grinder than the espresso maker. The main secret for a great espresso is the grinder.

This machine does not pressure automatically the coffee in the porta filter, which means you''ll have to put the exact quantity and pressure to the coffee. Most consumer machines will do that automatically, but not the Gaggia Classic. This machine is not consumer, but really pro-sumer, which is why I don''t recommend this machine for a novice or casual drinker. If you are not ready to mess with the tamper and grain coarseness, this machine is not for you. Of course, if you are, you are going to drink a superior espresso than with a consumer machine.

I would not recommend this machine for latte and cappuccino lovers: it takes too long. Although the boiler is quickly hot enough to use the steam (2 min): 1) the wand is way too low and creates a mess, in addition to frustration 2) you''ll have to wait for the machine to cool down or to purposefully run out of steam in order to make coffee. Which is why this machine is better made for an espresso than a milk-make espresso. I do wonderful cappuccinos with this machine, but it takes time.

Overall, an excellent machine. It is robustly built, good looking, not too noisy, and makes excellent coffee. My review wanted to stress a few points that only comes through having using it. Ask yourself the two questions: when you go to Starbucks, do you order an espresso or something else? Are you ready to spend $800 ($350-500 machine, $300-$500 grinder, $100 accessories)? I truly hope this helps you make a better purchase decision. This review will be posted on different sites. AM.
