Lifesmart Power Plus 6 Element 1800 Square Foot Infrared Quartz Heater Save 63% Off

Lifesmart Power Plus 6 Element 1800 Square Foot Infrared Quartz Heater w/Furniture Cabinet Includes RemoteI decided on this particular heater over others because it advertises the heater as 6500 BTUs and a five year warranty. When it arrived and I was looking at the box I noticed that it was only 5100 BTUs and has a 3 year year warranty. I thought they had sent me the wrong one but when I compared the model number it was the correct model number. I contacted the company that sent me the heater and they just said that that was the information the Lifesmart company provided them with. To me, that is false advertising!

CONS: Light weighted cabinet (not stable); imitation wood (sticker); inaccurate temperature detection; displayed temperature is the temperature to reach, not the current temperature in the room; fan is very loud; no battery for the remote; advertises as a 6500 BTU when in fact it is a 5100 BTU unit.

PROS: Light weight (but easy to move); has auto turn on and off; has an economy mode setting (500 watts); master on/off switch; fan seems to blow pretty hard.

NEUTRAL: Heat blows toward the floor (maybe 35 degree angle)

..based on my experience attempting to return this item, BEWARE OF FAT BOY TOOLS a seller of this item. They attempted to close my claim for a return and sent me the following message: "Fat Boy Tools has closed your return request. The reason for the closure of your request is: Solved a technical issue" WTF.

For starters, I think this is the first time I''ve taken the time to write a review. I was just a little frustrated how poorly this product was ranked after I committed to buy two of them.

I actually bought this product from e-bay as they were running a big sale. However, I buy a ton from Amazon and always compare prices to theirs and often look at some of the reviews. As with any other item, there are almost always a lot of likes and dislikes. This product had plenty of one star reviews which kind of scared me. Then, I looked at the intelligence level of the reviewers. The fan was "noiser" as opposed to "noisier". One star because the remote didn''t have batteries, really??? It wasn''t made out of wood, it was plastic on wood. Not true with mine, it''s not oak or anything, but it is at least veneer. It only raised the room "2 degree" my old one raised it "8 degree". Firstly, more than one means "degrees". There were some other reviewers that had experience with more expensive units that said this performed "comparably" for the price. I went with the more educated people and bought two of these units. I''ve only been using them for two days and I''m actually pretty impressed. I use these for localized heating because I run a pellet stove in a 2,850 square foot house. The heat simply can''t make it to all areas. I was using some smaller electric faux stoves that worked fairly well. However, not all of them I had have built in thermostats. These units do and they seem to work pretty well. I had one in my bedroom (big bedroom and master bath) and set it at 65 degrees last night. This morning, my atomic clock was reading 63.9 degrees. Close enough considering I have the blower pointing away from the clock. I''m sure it would have been higher if I pointed the heater towards the clock/thermometer. This was on the low (500W) setting. I have not even used the 1,000W setting yet. This product is advertised to help supplement your existing heat and to be efficient at doing so. I don''t pay that much attention to my electric bill, but it''s 1,500W which seems to be the max for all of these small stand alone units (for the most part). I have oil heat which I have not used for two years since installing a large pellet stove, thanks to my free Obama money at the end of 2011. But, as mentioned before, the heat can''t permeate through my entire house well. I use some ceiling fans to move the air around but that''s not enough to get the upstairs warm. Yes, I understand, heat rises, but apparently, not as much as I would like. So, in a nutshell, this seems to work great to heat a room locally. It also has an auto on/auto off timer. I have not used that either, but figure the auto on will work nice to come on a couple of hours before you get home. It''s not like an alarm clock. You have to tell it to come on in a certain amount of hours. Other complaints included that the display shows the setpoint, not the actual temperature. OK, some people will want it one way, some the other. It seems to hold the setpoint fairly well, so I''m OK with that. Another heater I have displays the actual temperature of the heater, so it is consistently hotter than what the actual room temperature is. Lastly, some people complain it''s too loud. The filter on my fishtank, which is called a Whisper filter, is louder, so the volume does not bother me. Seems fine. I guess that''s enough said, I think it''s a pretty good product. While it may not completely heat your trailer, it''s pretty good for keeping some larger rooms that need a boost nice and cozy. I''d recommend to a friend.

Pros:

Attractive package that you can easily put a picture or plant on top of

Fully assembled upon arrival, including the wheels (which are stable as opposed to one review)

On/Off Timer

Remote (except for the added $1.00 you''ll have to pay for two AA batteries)

F/C temperature display

Directional heat as you can point it where you want the heat to go

Cons:

People seem to have had problems with the vendor they purchased it from when they were dissatisfied

Doesn''t have the fake logs and flames that the faux heaters have that most people actually enjoy

Won''t walk my dog or make me coffee in the morning (just had to come up with a complaint like the other one star reviews)

Sorry if I insulted anyone''s intelligence, but some of those reviews really are comical.

Happy New Year

I bought this product for 179.00 on Amazon, through FAT BOYS TOOLS. It works about the same as my hair dryer on warm.

It ran quite for about three hours and now makes enough noise to be bothersome.

Honestly, I have a 30.00 radiant heater that works ten times better.

In retuning this item I have to pay a 12% restocking fee, that is 31.60 to me, and a 11.40 pre paid shipping fee. The grand total for 43.00. I have learned my lesson, do not buy from Fat Boys Tools. I tried to work something out with them, I wanted a replacement heater, but they don''t sell any other heaters that work better then this one. In fact the young lady in customer service told me that this heater only heats as a secondary heater and brings the room four degrees higher then the primary heat source has heated it. Sounds to me that 1800 square feet "line" is just an eye catching bate, It is advertised to "1800 Square Foot Infrared Quartz Heater...." Sounds to me like it might heat that 1800 square ft. space. My place is no more then 600 sq. feet all one room, No it is not warm!!!

Whink Coffee Maker Cleaner, 3 Count, 10 Ounce Save 84% Off

Whink Coffee Maker Cleaner, 3 Count, 10 OunceWe have issues with hard water and our coffee maker constantly slowing down. Up until now I have always used vinegar but it hasn''t worked all l that great. The 3 pack of this coffee maker cleaner went on sale at a great price so I decided to get some. I have only used this once so far but I do think it helped speed up the brewing process. My only complaint is that it requires a few rinses by brewing plain water. The whole process can take hours because you don''t want to overwhelm the machine with constant repeated brewing, but you have to because this product is toxic to people. I will continue to use this monthly as recommended an update this review as needed.

We''ve tried both vinegar and CLR to clean our coffee maker with limited success. After trying Whink we were thoroughly impressed with how well it worked. It immediately removed calcium build-ups where CLR did not.

Culligan PR-1 Water Pitcher Filter Replacement Cartridge

Culligan PR-1 Water Pitcher Filter Replacement CartridgeIt turns out that smells and tastes have many components to them, and one person may detect 50% of the components while another will detect 60%, and their overlap may only be 30%. That''s why senses of smell and taste can be so different from one person to the next.

And I believe this probably accounts for the differences in reviews here so far. Either that or the quality of the Culligan filters differs from batch to batch!

Anyway, to me the batch of Culligan filters I got (at Walgreen''s) impart a taste that bothers me. This is a taste the straight tap water doesn''t have, and the delicious Brita filters never had. I didn''t know what it was, but reading the other review here, I realize it is sort of lemony. I asked my wife to try the Culligan filtered water and she didn''t detect this. Maybe the taste testers at Culligan have a sense of taste more like my wife''s?

First, you must prime your cartridge, prior to use. Simply follow the instructions which are included in the box. After priming, be sure to brew a full pitchers worth of water, about 8 times. This will elminate any funky flavors in your water. Enjoy! My dad just bought one. We love our water. No more bottled water. No more tap water.

I bought the Culligan pitcher which included the PR-1 filter. The water tastes fresh and is crystal-clear after using the pitcher and filter. I only paid $11.99 for the Pitcher and filter too. I didn''t notice any lemon-taste. I am now going to order more filters. Maybe the lemon-taste that the previous reviewer noticed was just the clean taste of the filtered water. You can actually see the difference in the water when it is filtered through the pitcher and cartridge and it is very clear.

I had been using Brita pitcher and filters for years before I decided to try Culligan''s filters, which fit in the Brita pitcher. I can''t find strong enough words to express my disappointment. The water taste is awful, AWFUL!!! When I first installed the filter, following the instructions, and trowing away the water from the first 3 pitchers, the water still tasted sour like there were a few drops of lemon juice in it... We decided to be patient, so maybe after A WEEK of use, it stopped being sour, but still didn''t taste good. Not even close to the Brita filter that we were used to... I opened a second filter from the three-filter box and it was the same the lemony taste returned. I don''t know what kind of tests have been run before putting that filter on the market, but I am afraid to use it anymore... Somebody should take those out of the market!!! I am curious what a chemical test will find in that water... I actually think that tap water tastes better than the water filtered with that filter... Yesterday I bought Brita filters again and, Oh, what a difference!!! I am enjoying pure and tasty water again!!!

I have used the Culligan water filter system for years now, the reason why I have to order them is Walgreens no longer carries the product, at least here in the Bay area. All I know is my water tastes much better out of my faucet when I run it through the Culligan filter into the Culligan pitcher. It does make the water more pure and from my understanding is better than the other water filters out there like Brita. I recommend the Culligan water system very highly.

Adagio Teas Ingenuitea Teapot

Adagio Teas 16-Ounce Ingenuitea TeapotMy wife bought one of these when we were vacationing in Eureka Springs a year ago, and I thought it was another gizmo to add to the cupboard. Was I wrong. I started using it more and more, mostly for green tea, and thought it would be good to have one for work as well. So I ordered one from Cooking.com and use it all the time. I just put the tea leaves in the container, add hot water, let it sit for 5 minutes, then set it on top of my cup. The valve on the bottom opens up and the tea pours into the cup, with out the leaves (with the green tea I buy from China, the leaves are full leaves, and I can get another 2 cups out of it, so refilling is easy). The nice thing is, I can use it for coffee as well as black tea. The coffee, especially if you grind your own, tastes so much better. To clean, I just invert in a trash can, and rinse out what''s left.

Length:: 3:03 Mins

A quick demonstration of the Ingenuitea teapot. We like the ease of use of this product and especially how easy it is to clean. We tend to not use tea bags and prefer loose leaf tea. This little infuser has us drinking tea more frequently. Watch how easy it is to make a nice cup of tea:

Update December 2012:

We still use this unit all the time and it has held up quite well. One note is that the coaster in the video no longer comes with the unit. We misplaced it a long time ago anyway.

I got a pot of tea at a cafe recently and they served it up in an Ingenuitea. Within about 5 seconds, I realized this was the perfect way to make tea or coffee, actually, and that this is how tea should be made. If you like loose tea and tea balls are awkward not to mention hot to take out, etc. the Ingenuitea is the BEST. No drip, no mess, no nothin''... simply tea. Ingenious, indeed!

TIP: I''ve had this ''teacup'' (16 oz.) for a while now. I recently became frustrated with it. I use green tea (leaves never bags) and I re-infuse the leaves. Normally I would pour the hot water into the cup, steep the tea the enjoy my cuppa.

A few weeks ago, I decided to try using cold water and popping it into the microwave as suggested. That, I thought, would eliminate the step of boiling a kettle full of water for 16 oz of tea. True, but the little strainer at the bottom of the cup kept popping out, and the leaves would then strain into my cup annoying me and wasting my leaves. I was not a happy camper.

Well it finally dawned on me yesterday that the hot water worked to seal the little strainer. So now I have completely abandoned the microwave idea (probably wasn''t good for me anyway). I pour a bit of hot water into the cup, wait 3 seconds, gently press on the strainer with my spoon, listen to it pop into place and seal. THEN and only then do I add my precious tea leaves and more hot water and wait 2 to 3 minutes for gratification.

When re-infusing the leaves, I press first with the spoon while carefully adding a bit of hot water. If I don''t, when the strainer pops out the leaves already in there will slip under and end up in my cup.

I''ve noted that even when using the hot water, if you pour all at once the strainer will pop out. I don''t know why this is happening now or if it happens only with mine, but the above is my solution if you encounter the same issue.

I just purchased one of these after using a friend''s, and I love it. This is the perfect way to make loose leaf tea for one. Unlike with tea balls or spoon-size infusers, the leaves have plenty of room to unfurl as the tea steeps and there''s no clasp to come undone. Unlike with basket infusers, there''s no dripping or mess when it''s time to remove the leaves. You simply get perfectly brewed tea with no mess every time. I can''t recommend this enough.

Melitta Cone Filter Manual Coffeemaker 6 Cup

Melitta Cone Filter Manual Coffeemaker 6 Cup, 1-CountBeing a lifelong coffee fiend, I''ve tried literally EVERY type and brand of coffee-making device known to mankind over the last 30 years: standard electric drip coffee makers, percolators (not recommended to anyone with an appreciation for coffee and functioning tastes buds), French presses, vacuum pump units, microwave gizmos for which one needs an engineering degree to figure out, etc., but I keep coming back to this one.

It''s definitely low tech, but it does what it''s designed to do, e.g. make a terrific pot of coffee with minimal hassle. Other reviews have described the process of using this as being additionally cumbersome (given the need to boil water separately beforehand} but I don''t personally find that to be the case. I keep a teakettle of filtered water on my stovetop, and when I''m ready to make coffee, I turn the burner on, and while the water is heating, I measure the coffee out, and then once the water is near boiling, simply pour over the grounds. The entire process takes about five to seven minutes, start to finish, about the same time as an electric drip unit would take.

The unit -which essentially works similarly to more stylish (but also considerably more expensive) Chemex coffemaker -has several advantages over other coffee making methods: because the water is manually boiled, one can control the temperature; because the unit is so low tech and has no buttons, switches, bells, whistles or moving parts, it can last for decades (unless one breaks the glass carafe which, being on the clumsy side, I''d done more than once -but then they''re so inexpensive to replace that it''s really not that big a deal; also, the carafes of electric drip units are equally fragile); if one has a gas stove, as I do, coffee can be made, even during a power failure.

Cleanup is simple: toss the filter full of used grounds in the trash, and after the coffee is consumed, rinse out the filter cone and the carafe. There''s no reservoir to collect nasty sediments like an electric drip unit, no grungy screen and plunger to disassemble and scrub like a French press.

If a new coffee making technology is introduced, I will surely try it, but doubt I will find something else that is as inexpensive or reliable as the Melitta Manual coffee maker.

EASY OF USE

I''ve used the Mellita Coffee System for about 40 years. I find the system more convenient than coffee machines.

> If the power goes off, you can still make coffee if you have a gas stove or a camp stove.

> It is easy to brew exactly the amount of coffee you want, and exactly the strength that you want---including adjusting to new roast and grinds. You can even mix caffeinated and decaffeinated coffees if you wish.

> In a way, the Mellita system is more "sanitary". It is easy to forget a used filter in a coffee maker, maybe for weeks if you go on a vacation, and find a fungus garden in there. You can''t ignore a used Melitta filter, because it is out in the open. If you forget a used Melitta filter, it and the coffee grinds just dry out. It is also much easier to wash the Melitta components---just a quick rinse under the tap is usually good enough. Caveat--some types of coffee are oiler than others---you may need to actually wash your cone and carafe if a quick rinse is not sufficient.

SIZE OPTIONS

The carafes for which the "6 cup" and "10 cup" systems can nominally hold 6 or 10 cups off coffee (filled to the brim), but that is really irrelevant. A more important consideration is cups vs mugs. How many people still drink "cups" of coffee? So, it is the "mug-capacity" (1 mug = 1 1/2 cups) of the filters and cones which really counts.

#2 filters/cones

Recomemnded: 1 cup

Practical Maximum: 1 mug

Theoretical Maximum: 2 cups

#4 filters/cones ("6 cup system")

Recommended: 1-2 mugs

Practical Maximum: 2 1/2 mugs

Theoretical Maximum: 4 mugs

#6 filters/cones ("10 cup system")

Recommended: 2-3 mugs

Practical Maximum: 4 mugs

Theoretical Maximum: 6 mugs

However, I don''t follow my own recommendation: In the morning, I want coffee "now!" I often run out of patience trying to brew even 1 mug of coffee using #4 filter/cones. On the otherhand, the #6 filter/cones holds a whole mug of hot water in one quick pour, and drains about as fast as you can continue to pour the water in---so I find it very convenient for brewing 1 to 2 mugs of coffee at a time, and on rare occasions to easily brew 4 mugs (6 cups) of coffee. However, in this case, the hot water has little time to extract the flavor from the coffee. To compensate, I grind my coffee very finely. I could simply use more coffee, but that would be wasteful.

The #6 filters/cones ("10-cup system") is faster and more flexible, at a slightly higher cost for the filters. Melitta Cone Filter Coffeemaker 10 Cup, 1-Count If you are patient and your space is very limited, such as in a camper, boat, or in a college dorm, or if you really want only 1 or 2 mugs of coffee at a time, #4 filter/cones (the so-called "6 cup system") is a good choice.

GRINDS OF COFFEE

If you usually brew the "recommended" or fewer number of mugs of coffee, then very-finely ground coffee is recommended. If you usually brew the the "recommended" or more number of mugs at a time, then a medium grind coffee may work best. Most supermarket "fine grind" is actually a medium grind. If you brew more than the "practical maximum" a medium-coarse grind will work better. If you grind your own coffee in an electric grinder, "coarse" is only a second or two, medium-fine is perhaps 10 seconds, and very fine is perhaps 30 seconds, until the pitch of the sound changes, indicating that no more grinding is taking place.

REUSE

If you use very-fine grind, then discard the used filter when finished (because most of the flavor will be extracted, and the filter will be clogged up by the fine grinds). If you use a medium grind, then you can optionally reuse the grinds in the afternoon to make a second batch of coffee (which will be lower in caffiene). Coffee-freaks may object to reusing grinds, but it works just fine.

FORMULA

Regardless of the grind, you have to use the same formula for the TOTAL amount of coffee actually made, i.e., 1 to 2 tablespoons of ground coffee per mug, depending on your taste, brand, etc.

FILTERS

Presumably, brown filters are easier on the environment---and on you, less chemicals having been used to manufacture them. Unfortunately, #6 filters are hard to find in most grocery stores, but easy to purchase via Amazon. Melitta Cone Coffee Filters, Natural Brown, No. 6, 40-Count Filters (Pack of 12) Melitta Cone Coffee Filters, Natural Brown, No. 2, 100-Count Filters (Pack of 6)Melitta Cone Coffee Filters, White, No. 6, 40-Count Filters (Pack of 12) In an emergency, you can use #4 filters in a #6 cone, but you''ll regret it (having been spoiled by the convenience of #6 filters).

RECOMMENDATIONS ON MAKING GOOD COFFEE

>>Use fresh unchlorinated water if possible. Do not use "softened", "sparkling", or "mineral" water. If you let an open pitcher of water sit on a counter for a few hours (or overnight), most of the chlorine will evaporate. The best way to get pure water is a reverse-osmosis system. Bring the water to a quick boil, but don''t leave it boiling too long--that will flush out the dissolved oxygen, leaving the coffee tasting flat.

>>There is a huge difference between brands and roasts. Experiment and enjoy. However, even more important is freshness---which is the greatest challenge. How can you know if the coffee is fresh? The easiest way is to signup with a service such as Gavelia, Boca Java, or Coffee Bean Direct--whose only business is providing you with freshly roasted (and freshly-ground if you wish) coffee.

>>Particularly if you do not use a "coffee service", its best to buy whole beans and grind them just before brewing. A $15 grinder Krups 203-42 Fast Touch Coffee Grinder, Black is as good as a $200 grinder. It takes only a few seconds to grind a batch of coffee while waiting for the water to boil.

>>For newbees, "French" or "dark roast" coffee is rich and bitter, and usually brewed "stong". Light roasts are more complex, but some are acidic, and are usually brewed and drank more like tea. Light roast Indonesian coffee is particularly complex. Caveat, "complex" does not necessarily mean flavorful---some dark roasts are wonderful, but it is probably harder to find a good dark roast. The Coffee Bean Direct Assorted Whole Bean Coffee Sampler, 9-Pound Box available from Amazon is a good way to explore the varieties of coffee.

>>The filter cone and carafe should be rinsed off after every use, otherwise your coffee can be contaminated with stale oils. A weekly wash in the dishwasher won''t hurt.

>>Elsewhere, you''ll read endless nonsense about the exact water temperature, how fast or how slow to pour the water, the value of porcelain vs plastic cones, preheating the cones with hot water, how finely ground the coffee should be, etc. It''s all nonsense (except possibly to engineers who design coffeemakers). 99% of what matters is the quality of the ingredients: water and coffee. You want fresh oxygenated chlorine-free salt-free water, and good quality recently-roasted and recently-ground coffee.

SAFETY

It is easy to forget the glass carafe on a hot stove. I broke at least 6 carafes before I purchased a whistling teakettle. Revere 2-1/3-Quart Whistling Tea Kettle NEVER use the carafe to boil water or reheat coffee. The flood of water might crack a ceramic stovetop, or put out a the flame of a gas stove---both causing catastrophic problems. Use your microwave to reheat (1 mug of coffee = 30-45 seconds); it''s faster and safer.

It is important to take care to pour the boiling water into the filter, not between the filter and the filter cone. It is any easy accident to make. To minimize such accidents, fold over the "joined" edges of the filters so that the filter opens wider. If you are a particular klutz, a quick rinse with a little cold water before you add the ground coffee can "glue" the filter to the cone.

SUGAR IN YOUR COFFEE?

Purist insist that coffee should always be drank black. While I tentatively agree, I can''t. My taste-buds are overly sensitive to bitterness. However, I have found that pure Stevia Pure Stevia Extract Powder by Kal 3.5 oz is a good replacement for sugar for me. Oddly, it isn''t as sweet as sugar, but is just as effective in cutting the bitterness, which is what I really need. Truvia and other brands in packets or described as "spoonable" contain bulking agents which effect the flavor and leave a yucky residue, and are comparatively expensive. KAL Pure Stevia contains no bulking agents and is very economical.

SALT IN YOUR COFFEE?

It''s a naval tradition. I''ve found that a few grains of sea-salt in a cup of light-roast coffee can be pleasant, but not so compelling that I make a habit of it. However, a little salt is more noticeable (in a good way) in ice coffee.

MILK IN YOUR COFFEE?

If the purpose is just to cut the acidity, then you need to try a different coffee or brewing method. If the purpose is to cut the bitterness, you might want to try stevia instead. If you simply like milk in your coffee---I say, indulge yourself with a little real (not fake) half-and-half, or even heavy cream. I usually drink my coffee black with a little stevia, but for a rare desert cup, real sugar and real cream are essential.

GENERAL SHOPPING RECOMMENDATION

After major grocery shopping expeditions, sit down at your computer with your reciept, and check if you can buy any of the non-perishables through Amazon. When you find items (even if more expensive than you just paid), put the item on your Amazon wish list, and add a note to the wish list of the price you just paid. Check your wish list frequently, and when you see an item you need at a bargain price, buy it.

Buy Melitta Cone Filter Manual Coffeemaker 6 Cup Now

When you have the money and want a fancy manual drip maker, you can look at Chemex or Bodum. But, if you want good coffee at a good price, this is it. In our day coffee came in a 16 oz can and we drank whatever was cheapest. Now kids know the difference between Robusta and Arabica and go to a local roaster on the day their regional favorite is being roasted. Fancy Auto-Drip machines don''t heat the water hot enough, build up calcium, and don''t immerse all the grind correctly. French pots let silt and bitter elements of the coffee through. This method takes some time and effort, but if you like good coffee, its worth it. This coffee maker goes for about the price as a bag of good coffee.

Haier HU335W Ultrasonic Cleaner Save 58% Off

Haier HU335W Ultrasonic CleanerI read the 1st review of this item, and ordered the cleaner anyway, hoping for better results. Indeed my Haier machine works quite well. BUT...don''t expect jewelry and coins to come out sparkling clean, like the pictures and the hype. Instead, think of the machine as a shortcut to a lot of scrubbing with a toothbrush. Earrings gunked up with hairspray were somewhat cleaner after a few cycles; but then after just a short scrub with a soft brush, they were as good as new! Same with diamond rings, etc. The cleaner helped greatly, but did not clean everything immaculately all by itself. The cleaner really gets into the nooks and crannies in watchbands, etc., but again, some follow-up is needed with a brush.

In my opinion, it is definately worth it''s purchse price.

I''ve been using this machine once a month to clean my wedding rings and three years later they still look new. Does a great job of removing the buildup behind the diamond setting where a toothbrush just doesn''t quite reach. I also like the fact you can use plain water.

This is an inexpensive, good looking, and efficient enough cleaner, but may have very limited life due to faulty components. I''ve purchased three of these, and know now it was a poor investment. The first stopped working after 5 months, and thinking it just bad luck, bought two more; one, I gave as a gift and reportedly is still working, but the second stopped working for me after almost a year of regular use. It works well, but you''ll take your chances with this unit.

After all the hoopla, you are ready to fill your Travel Brita at any water fountain or even in the bathroom sink. Once filtered, you can pour the filtered water into your own empty water bottle and save up to $4 a bottle for drinkable great tasting water. It is a minor inconvenience but well worth it when you consider the price of bottled water in the kiosks and restarants! I also used the Travel Brita at the hotel. The tap water was awful, like the airport water. I recommend changing the filter after 3 weeks of airport/hotel use. It seems the filter does break down at some point there after and the metal and awful taste returns after being filtered with the old filter.

Brita no longer makes these excellent cups. I have purchased 5 of them over the past couple of years, as they become available by individuals. They are the perfect water cup, for the office, home, and anywhere you want a perfect sized cup for your favorite beverage. They are solid, and can survive a drop or two to the kitchen floor. I hand wash these, as repeated dishwasher use makes them brittle, as with most plastics.

Hamilton 1.7 Liter Stainless Steel Kettle Save 38% Off

Hamilton 1.7 Liter Stainless Steel KettleMy only concern after purchasing this kettle was that the level gauge has a plastic surface in contact with the boiling water on the inside of the kettle.

After sending an inquiry to the manufacturer about the type of plastic used in the construction, I received the following response:

"Thank you for contacting us. The plastic used is polypropylene which is BPA free. If you are in need of additional assistance please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you for your patronage.

Sincerely,

I absolutely love this kettle. I got my first one about six years ago and it''s still going strong. In fact, I just bought my second one so I could have hot water in my office at school for tea and ramen.

*The water gets hot fast. You know, in case you''re starving but only have about five minutes before undergrads start trickling into your office to ask for extra points on their midterms for spelling their names correctly.

*It automatically shuts off when it''s done boiling. A nice feature to have when you dart out of the office to intercept the cookie tray before the colloquium attendees get to it.

*There''s a window-thingy on the side to let you know how much water is inside. Great for figuring out how many packets of ramen you can make.

*The carafe can be completely removed from the electric base; no cord attached. I wish I could make a grad student joke about this feature, but nothing comes to mind except noose jokes (''cause, you know, when you''re a grad student, you want to hang yourself).

*It''s stainless steel instead of plastic...there''s nothing yuckier than plastic-tasting water. No plastic, no BPA-related worries. Not that I have anything to live for...I''m a grad student, after all.

Yeah, the outside of the carafe can get hot, but why in the world would you touch it? There''s a very strong and very big handle that doesn''t get hot that you use. I have the common sense of a gnat--hence, pursuing the PhD instead of a getting a real job--and I''ve never once burned myself, AND I''VE BEEN USING THIS DAILY FOR YEARS!

Yeah, I''m a grad student. How''d you know???

This kettle works perfectly for what it is supposed to be used for, boiling water at home. To those who gave it bad reviews because it was hot... really? That''s what it is supposed to do... If you read the instructions before use, it says that the stainless steel surface gets hot and to only grab it by the handle as well as to have close supervision when any appliance is used by or near children. Would you grab a tea pot off the stove by anything other than the handle or allow your young children to operate it from the stove? No... It heats up quick and it was a great buy for only $20 at Costco. Super easy to use and has a removable mesh filter to prevent scale that is caused by lime and calcium in hard water.

I purchased this at Costco for $19.99, it is a great little kettle. I used it to replace a Braun kettle that was all plastic and had a water filter that was easily broken and cost more than this kettle to replace. I eventually found a cheaper filter online but when shipping and handling costs were added it was over $10.00. The two kettles hold the same amount of water and boil the water at the same time, but this is less than half the price of the Braun. I have not used it for long so cannot speak to it''s longevity, however it does the job and so far so good. As for the issues about cool touch v/s this kettle, the handle is large, the lid opens easily with a cool push button, why on earth do you need to touch it anywhere else? If you have elderly people in your home as some reviewers mention, if they are too infirm or confused to hold this kettle then they should not be around electrical products or kitchens unsupervised so it is a moot point. I guess with children it is a personal thing, do you leave them unattended in the kitchen next to a container of boiling water?

Despite some previous reviewers who find that this kettle heats water to boiling no more quickly than their stovetop kettles, it''s a huge improvement for me. My old gas stove takes at least twice as much time. I use this kettle at least once a day to heat water for my Chemex coffeemaker or to make a couple quarts of iced tea to keep in the refrigerator. It takes about five minutes to heat a full pot (1.7 liters or about 2 quarts) to approximately 200 degrees, perfect for coffee or green tea.

Since I''m not always heating water to boiling, I considered buying a much fancier and pricier kettle that has temperature settings, but I''m glad I saved my money. After some experimenting with a thermometer, I''ve found that I can easily tell when the water is about 200-205 degrees. As soon as I can clearly see steam pouring out of the spout, and I can hold my hand comfortably above the spout for no more than about four seconds (due to the heat), that''s just perfect. The pot swivels a full 360 degrees on its base, unlike some others I looked at, and that makes it really easy to monitor as it heats.

I also like that it has a thick plastic handle and a pushbutton to open the lid, so it can be easily filled and poured without having to remove a lid. The pointy-shaped spout doesn''t drip. The kettle also has a protective plastic base, so I can take it off the heating element and set it down right on my kitchen table without a potholder underneath.

The power cord is 24" long. You can shorten it if needed by wrapping it inside the base of the heating element, and feeding the desired length out through a notch. I have my kettle on the counter right next to the outlet, and I have the cord shortened to under 6". This reduces the likelihood of something catching on the cord and tipping over the kettle, and it also prevents the cord from accidentally touching the hot outside of the kettle and causing fire or damage (I had this happen once with a crock pot.)

The only minor issue I''ve had is that the screen filter that fits inside the spout pops loose occasionally and I find it floating in the water. It''s easy enough to snap back into place once the kettle is cool. I''d just remove it permanently but the instructions warn that the auto-shutoff feature may not work correctly if the filter is not in place.

In conclusion, you can pay a lot more for a kettle but this simple one looks nice in my kitchen and works great for me. I have no hesitation recommending it.

GE GXPL03H Filtered Water Pitcher Save 44% Off

GE GXPL03H Filtered Water PitcherI purchased this as a Goodwill Store (Sorry Amazon!:)). For what I paid, I figured at least I could make iced tea, etc in it. Boy was I surprised!! The water out of my tap was horrible, and we really thought it was making us sick. I''ve tried others, and this was by far the the best tasting water filter pitcher I''ve ever tried. I have arthritis in my hands, and the bigger ones were too hard for me to fill and pour. I have to say this was one of the BEST buys I''ve made!! It was easy to fill, the water filters quickly, it''s easy to pour due to the moveable spout to prevent spills, and the water tastes terrific! I use it when I make coffee, Kool Aid for the grand kids, iced tea, etc. Plus we live in Florida, so we drink a LOT of water. If you want a REALLY great, and easy to use and fill pitcher, this is the one to buy. I also love the fact that there is a little LCD indicator to tell me when the filter needs to be changed. BUY THIS FILTER PITCHER!! You will be extremely happy with it, the price here on Amazon is good. Being on a fixed income, I didn''t want to spend $30 or more $$, that I wasn''t sure about, so this was perfect. You won''t regret it!

This is a really good purchase especially for the price! I have been very impressed with the ease of use and great water. I have water with a lot of minerals and strong taste, but this pitcher not only makes the water crystal clear, but also taste amazing!

The filter that came with my pitcher was excruciatingly slow. I soaked it before use, as prescribed, but when I tried to use the filter, I''d get about 10 drops a minute. Took all morning to get half a pitcher of water! Fortunately, when I got a second filter, it worked much better. Now it can filter half a pitcher in about 10 minutes or so.

Otherwise the pitcher itself is well designed. I like the way the spout automatically flips up when you begin pouring. The water tastes great, since it filters much better than Brita filters. I''m just hoping the first filter I got was a fluke, and I never get another "overstuffed" filter that barely allows water to flow through.

I used the Oxyclean Deck Cleaner on a TimberTech composite deck. I sprayed the product on and cleaned as directed. I had some black mold spots over about 1/5 of my deck. I would call it a minor mold problem. I found that it took two applications to clear up all of the mold spots at normal concentration. That is with a good deal of hard scrubbing with a rigid bristle brush too. The formula doesn''t seem to lift the material off of the boards as well as I expected. The instructions indicate that you can use a higher concentration for tougher problems, but I found that the normal concentration had a light bleaching affect on my brown colored deck boards, so I was affraid of increasing the concentration. Overall it did the job, but expect a lot of hard scrubbing.

I don''t write reviews, BUT...this stuff is unbelievable!!! I just finished cleaning my deck with it and it looks like brand new. It doesn''t take much effort, no chemical odor, and just add water. You let it sit for a couple of minutes and simply scrub it with a brush and all the dirt and mildew comes right off and the beauty of the wood is back. I''m so happy. It just needs to dry and then I will be ready to seal it. I can''t recommend it enough.
