SodaStream Carbonating Bottle, Metal Finish

SodaStream Carbonating Bottle, Metal Finish
  • SodaStream "Metal" Carbonating Bottle with Stainless Steel Cap and Bottom
  • 1 Litre Capacity; Bottle Made of BPA Free Materials
  • Fizz-preserving Stainless Steel cap for High Pressure usage
  • For FountainJet, Pure and Genesis ... NOT for Penguin

People, please read what you''re buying and look at the picture before yelling at the manufacturer. This is a plastic bottle with decorative stainless steel trim. It''s the same bottle as their standard gray/white/black plastic, but the trim is replaced with stainless steel (or perhaps the best word is clad the top is still gray plastic underneath). It looks and feels a little nicer than the other bottle, and the stainless is less likely to crack if hit/dropped. I like these, and they work great on my machine.

If you want glass/metal only, you need to buy the Penguin machine...

This gives a nice little touch to the other black capped bottles I have I use these steel capped bottles on the table for an informal dinner with guests. Knowing the product is BPA free is very important to me. I only wish these could be washed in the dishwasher, my only MINOR issue with them.

These reviewers are cracking me up. Maybe the description has been revised, but it clearly states all over the name and specs this is a plastic bottle with a SS cap and bottom.. Its just a little more fancy then the all plastic bottles... but to rate it low on the fact that you bought a BPA-FREE PLASTIC Carbonating Bottle with Stainless Steel Cap and Bottom, because its plastic... really sad.

I would have rated this 5 stars but I got it on a Thursday! UGH

Want SodaStream Carbonating Bottle, Metal Finish Discount?

I bought 2 of these bottles in order to have a couple of extra ones chilling in the fridge, ready to carbonate. I''m not sure why some people thought these were going to be ALL stainless... I could tell from the photo that they were clear plastic with stainless bottoms and caps only, which is fine for me. Plus it mentions that they are BPA free which implies that they are plastic bottles. I wouldn''t want the bottle to be opaque stainless steel anyway. I like seeing the water level inside so I can tell if it''s water that I''ve already carbonated and how much is left in the bottle. We use these every day... fill, chill, carbonate, drink, rinse and repeat :)

I don''t understand people who order something without reading the description carefully or even going to the manufacturet''s site to get maybe more information. This is a great bottle and much better looking than the bottles with black cap & bottom or some other color. The stainless part on the bottom can be screwed off and it can also be screwed back on. Why would anyone want to glue it on. I have had no trouble at all with the caps. They work beautifully. However, I do not wash any of the bottle in hot water. I just rinse them out with tepid water after the contents are consumed. You can buy the bottle from SodaStream for $14.95 plus shipping so the price here is not bad since it includes shipping. You can also buy the bottle at Bed Bath & Beyond for $12 with a 20% off coupon.

Filtrete Water Station Replacement Bottles (2 Bottles) Save 19% Off

Filtrete Water Station Replacement Bottles, 2 Bottles, Colors Will VaryThese caps screw on which is great! The older style snap on caps broke easily and popped open when dropped. These have colored lids which make it simple to identify when you drink some and stick the rest in the fridge. They are BPA free which is a plus. So I have to say this is the one product I have ever used that has made such great improvements. I will order more of these.

I love this product. I use it every day. I love not spending as much $$ on bottled water. The ony draw back is that it tastes like drinking tap water. It does have a bit of taste to it, unlike bottled water that has a "non taste". The first few fill ups with a new filter it is more noticable, but that might just be because I didn''t flush the filter enough. But overall it works great. Now I just need to convince my family to start using them.

Also, I like the replacement bottles rather than the ones that come with the unit. I like that the have a screw on cap instead of the pop off cap. I may buy a few extras or see if I can by just the tops.

I would totally recommend this product.

I really like the Filtrete water station and replacement bottles. The water has such a CLEAN taste...better than most bottled water. It is a pain to fill 8 or 10 bottles at a time, but the water is so good, you can''t stop drinking it!

I''m a little disappointed in these bottles. The 4 that come with the kit have an unusual closure, the whole thing snaps down...pretty self explanatory from the photos. Problem is, the seals wear out QUICKLY if you put them even in the top rack of the dishwasher. But These are replacement, or additional bottles and I like that the caps are colored, nice when others are drinking from the bottles, and the plastic is strong and sturdy, been dropped a lot and take a beating. None have broken. My only complaint on these with with nice screw-tops is they are WAY expensive. Dang.

Culligan CWMF / Pentek 155187 30-Micron Filtration Sediment Water Cartridge 2pk

Culligan CWMF / Pentek 155187 30-Micron Filtration Sediment Water Cartridge 2pkI was searching for a replacement filter for my GE whole house filter. GE for some reason had dis-continued their cord wound filter and only offered a foam filter. I had tried the foam filters before and they didn''t last very long. I bought the Pentek 155187 filter and have been pleased with them and they cost less than half of the GE filter at Home Depot.

Watts Premier 119008 10-Gallon Pressure Storage Tank Save 7% Off

Watts Premier 119008 10-Gallon Pressure Storage Tank
  • Powder coated steel exterior
  • Stainless steel 1/4-Inch male connection to fit RO tubing
  • comparable to the Amtrol RO-10 tank
  • Extra large storage capacity for high use and light commercial RO systems
  • Operating pressure: maximum 100 psi (7.43 g/cm2)

The picture on here does not give this product justice. I don''t even think they are picturing the 10 gallon tank, seems more like the 3.2 gallon version. However, the 10 gallon version looks closely like the one pictured. One plus is the stand that comes with this tank is a full collar stand with cutouts for the pipe. The final installation looks very professional and the tank output is on the bottom, not top.

I could not find any dimensions when I bought this tank so I''m posting them now.

Diameter: 15 1/4"

Height: 23" with stand.

It has a 10 gallon drawdown meaning the actual internal size of the tank is probably larger then 10 gallons.

It does not come with any hardware and you will need a 90 degree if mounted with the correct position (output down). I''ve read to stay away from brass fittings because the RO water will leach ions from anything that isn''t stainless or plastic. In this case, plastic is the best choice.

I have seen them less expensive on other sites but after you add shipping charges, it''s the same price by the time it is delivered. Amazon has always been the way to go for me as the total cost is either the same or better then anyone else.

I was so happy to get these filters for our old Aqua Rain water filtration system which is very similar to the Berkey. The price was much better than Aqua Rain. The filter are a nicer design with a complete ceramic head for faster filtering. The company sent them quickly and packaged them very well. I will definately buy more of these from this seller. I am very satisfied with the product and company.

I purchased (4) 7" British Berkefeld Ceramic Water Filters for Big Berkey from seller SpringClear Ltd. I have run approx 50 gallons of water through 2 of these filters using the Royal Berkey. I have yet to come up with a reading where these filters have lowered my PPM in fact they have increased it. The tester I used was the HM Digital TDS-4 Pocket Size TDS Tester Meter Without Digital Thermometer, 0-9990 ppm Measurement Range , 1 ppm Resolution, +/2% Readout Accuracy bought here on Amazon which had great reviews. I followed the instructions sent with the filter and even force fed water through the filter (as I had to do with the black Berkey filters). I also drained the Berkey after each test.

After approx 50 gallons run through the filters I did 3 tests for my Amazon review. The Berkey was again drained after each test and the meter was cleaned after each test. Here are the results.

TEST 1

Bottled water = 005

Tap water = 094

Tap Water w/ Berkefeld Ceramic = 128

TEST 2

Bottled water = 005

Tap water = 112

Tap Water w/ Berkefeld Ceramic = 116

TEST 3

Bottled water = 006

Tap water = 103

Tap Water w/ Berkefeld Ceramic = 113

When I demanded my money back from SpringClear Ltd I was told that it is not their fault it is mine and that they will not issue a refund. They also said it was possibly my tester. Not sure why the tester would pick the Berkey water to give high results and not the tap and bottled water. Here are some snippets from the email I received.

"If you wish to take this matter further I would recommend you seek a recognised Laboratory''s test results to back up your claims." So I assume it is now my job to get lab tests done. I just wanted to purify my water. Not become a water expert.

"The performance of these filters against disease causing bacteria and other contaminants such as cryptosporidium have been verified by independent laboratories. (Not members of the general public with an unverified and unspecified TDS meter which for all we know could be faulty.)" While I am by no means a digital water meter expert logic tells me even if the meter was faulty it would not add to the PPM of the Berkey water and not the Tap or Bottled.

"Notwithstanding that these filters, if properly installed are not likely to be adding anything to the water, as per the NSF certification, an increase in TDS is not necessarily an indication that the water is any way unsafe to drink. To leap to that conclusion and accuse Springclear Ltd or Fairey of supplying a product which is unfit for the purpose it is designed for is close to being defamatory." Sorry but if my meter shows the water coming out of the Berkey with a higher PPM than the water that I put in I am not going to drink it.

You decide.

Want 7" British Berkefeld Ceramic Water Filters for Big Berkey Discount?

I recently purchased these to replace the filters I''ve had in my Travel Berkey since 2001, so this is a review of the British Berkefeld ceramic water filters over a long period of time. We''ve lived in multiple countries on several continents over the past 10+ years and used our Travel Berkey on a daily basis. We frequently cleaned the ceramic filters per the instructions. How frequently we needed to clean them depended on water quality and climate. The warmer the climate, the more often we needed to clean them. Over time, the constant cleaning visibly wore down the ceramic, but they lasted us ten years, which is an exceptionally long time for a water filter and far beyond their stated life span from the manufacturer.

So, yes, they are expensive, and they are fragile (if you drop them, they WILL break), but if you take care of them, I feel they are the most effective and economical water filters for long term use.

This product definitely does what is it suppose to do. Its makes my tap water taste much better (not like bottle water though if that is what you are expecting. They have added minerals to give it that distinct taste). I used them in my personally built water purifier.

Brita Base Faucet Filtration System-1ct

Brita Base Faucet Filtration System-1ctI found this very easy to attach and remove, which I do a lot due to using a portable washer that shares the sink connection.

I''ve read of people having issues with the plastic threaded connection but no problems here. Maybe it''s been resolved by Brita in newer shipments.

Very easy to use, and does a really good job taking that chlorine and impure taste out of the tap water. I can''t tell the difference between the filtered water and bottled. The color indicator telling you when the filter''s nearing replacement time is appreciated as well.

10 Washing Machine Lint Traps Aluminum Mesh With Clamps

10 Washing Machine Lint Traps Aluminum Mesh With ClampsAs another reviewer pointed out, this is totally misleading. There are only 2 traps for $10 even though the title says 10.

I am so disappointed with this product. When you unroll the lint trap it curves inward and is dificult to puff out so the lint can get to the bottom and it is so thin that it barly holds its tube shape. The ties also are poor quality because they don''t tighten to well. I know now to stay away from this product! P.s. before thinking of getting them, try your local dollar store. I found better ones there after recieveing this JUNK that is messing up my drains!

I do not recommend this item. The first one I opened had some holes (tears in the mesh). The mesh appears to be somewhat brittle and not sturdy. I am a little concerned that the metal will break up during the wash. I will monitor for problems.

Better off buying a different brand.

  • High end designer chrome air gap faucet
  • Quick change sanitary filters
  • Easy to install
  • Filters change out at the push of a button
  • Crystal clear, high quality and great tasting water

I purchased from Costco. As of Jan 2011, Costco is currently selling it for $189 with $30 MFG rebate, so the unit can be purchased at $159 with tax.

I replaced an older GE GXRM10GBL Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration System purchased at Home Depot with this Watts unit. Where this system wins out is the ease of maintenance. It''s very easy to pop any of the filter cartridges in and out. GE system was harder to maintain and some of the parts broke during maintenance. The main issue was that whenever I need to sanitize the system or replace RO cartridge, I had to open the plastic cap to the RO cartridge holder, which is made out of fairly light plastic. Every 1-2 years, after opening a couple of times, the plastic cab would break when I screw it back on. The replacement part for the RO cartridge holder is $150, which is the same price as buying a new unit.

Here is my comparison, as of Jan 2011. Watts is a clear winner in my mind. Just a lot less hassle to maintain and probably cheaper in the long run. I''ll probably update the post after a year or so to see if Watts still holds up well.

---------------------------------------------

Initial Price Slight advantage GE. GE is $150 from HomeDepot where $189 with $30 MFG Rebate from Costco

OS Membrane Cost Slight advantage GE. We replace this every 2-3 years. It''s $50 for GE replacement cartridge from homedepot.com (FX12M) and $61 for Watts from filterfast.com

Carbon filter Cost Advantage Watts. Watt''s it''s only $50 for 1 year replacement set that replace pre-filters every 6 months and post filter every 12 months. For GE it''s $75 a year ($37 for a pre/post cartridge pair (FX12P) from filterfast 2 pair a year). which replace post pre/post every 6 months. In my opinion, post filter only need replacing every 12 months

Noise Advantage Watts. Both make sound when ro process take place, but Watts is quieter. With GE, I can really hear it in the middle of night.

Water quality Same. My family can''t taste the difference. Both specs seem to remove about same amount of all the contaminants.

Initial Install Slight advantage Watts. The system is more well designed and it''s a bit easier to install although the GE one was not bad

Replacing pre/post filter Advantage Watts. Watts takes me 10 seconds. GE takes me 10 minutes and water can get spilled easily.

Replacing RO membrane Advantage Watts. Watts takes me 5 seconds, GE takes me 20 minutes if everything goes well. I also have to have 2 very large clamps to open up the RO cartridge holder.

Sanitize system Advantage Watts. Watt is a lot easier to sanitize, takes 5 minutes to put in the bleach, and 4 hours flush afterwards, which can be unattended. GE require us to remove pre/post/RO membrane, and sanitize, and then put everything back. It''s something that takes me about an hour, with 4 hours flush time in between. And water gets spilled easily.

Durability Advantage Watts. I haven''t had Watts for long, but I can tell by how simple it is to swap the cartridges that it won''t break easily. We simply don''t have to take anything apart during maintenance where as GE requires you to do more mechanical things. Parts of GE breaks system after a couple sanitization or replacing RO membrane. Buy parts is a big pain since local stores don''t sell it and have to call GE to older. Some parts are very expensive.

Jan 13, 2012

Updating after an year.....

---------------------------------------------

Durability comment about WATTS above holds so far, nothing breaking. Water still tastes great.

The indicator light on the faucet, indicating filter need to change, seem to light up earlier than what the document replacement time should be ... So I end up ignoring that light.

PS. if you are installing an RO system yourself (any RO system), make sure plumbing is done right and always check for slow leaks every month. With RO systems, the water pressure in some pipes build up slowly as filtered water gets created. So don''t just install the system and assume there are no leaks. Check in 1 day, a week, then in a month...

Buy Watts Premier RO-Pure 531411 4-Stage Reverse Osmosis System Now

Our municipal water is horrible. It smells like a swimming pool and is very hard.

I purchased this unit from Costco not Amazon. When I pulled it out of the box I started to think that it was going to be complicated to install. The well written directions made it easy to install the unit. All of the connections except for the water supply are quick connect which are secure and easy to make.

After the unit was installed and I opened up the water supply I could hear the water gurgling and the waste of the RO running down the drain. The directions call for draining the first tank of water which I did. The second tank that we sampled was the best water I''ve ever had from home. It is far better than a Britta pitcher. It has a crisp, clean taste without any chlorine smell.

I let my kids sample the difference by trying 2 cups, one from the faucet, one from the filter. My 9 year old son didn''t even need to drink to tell the difference. Once he took a taste of the unfiltered tap water, he pushed it away and said it was horrible. He hung on to the filtered water.

Now we can refill reusable bottles and I don''t have to haul cases of bottled water home. It is better for the environment and much cheaper. We are drinking more water rather than soda because it tastes good and is easy to get to.

Another added benefit is that I put a tee in the connection as the instruction described and routed the water to my Samsung Fridge. The Samsung water filters cost about $40 plus shipping from Amazon. Now I can stop buying these filters every six months. The quality of the water from the Watts filter is much better than the Samsung filter.

The only negative part of the install is that the storage tank takes up a fair space under the sink. The directions say that you can put the filter/storage up to 25 feet away with 1/4 inch line or further with a 3/8''s line. In reality the space under the sink was taken up with a bunch of junk that we never used and having good water at the sink is a much better use of the space.

UPDATE 4-10: Someone contacted me through my Samsung fridge filter review and pointed out to me that Reverse Osmosis can waste a high ratio (1:3) to (1:5) of water make its final product. You can hear the water running down the drain after you use the faucet. The sound bothers my wife so I put the drain plug in as a mute. I am considering running a line to my drip sprinkler system.

I only installed (properly) this unit for a few days. It seems to work well. That is not the point of my review. I purchased and installed my first unit a few weeks ago. The waste water gushed down to the drain instead of tricking for few hours after each use (e.g., filling up a glass of filtered water). I thought the shut-off valve is bad so I got a replace unit. The second unit behaved the same way. At that point, I thought it is just a poor design -a very wasteful design. As I was reading the review of other similar filters (I was ready to return my 2nd unit and buy a different model), I saw someone wrote something about there is section of tubing that has a insert in it. That immediately reminded me that I removed a section of tubing (a short red one on the waste line) that appeared to be redundant. Fortunately, I still have that piece of tubing. There it is! a small plastic insert on one end of the tubing. Apparently, this insert is to crease a back pressure so that the shut off valve can function correctly. After I put this section of tubing back in, it no longer continuously discharges water to the drain. I feel bad about returning that first unit. They probably should have include a line in the instruction to warn smart people like me.

After one year of wonderful use, a plastic or rubber flavor began to emerge in the water. The flavor was similar to a very weak version of the flavor that you might get from drinking out of a garden water hose. I replaced all four filter cartridges, and the flavor persisted. I called Watts Premier and followed a Watts engineer''s instructions and we determined that the flavor was coming from the storage tank. I also noticed that the flavor was strongest in the morning, when filtered water had been sitting in the storage tank for a while; the flavor was least noticeable after allowing filtered water to flow down the drain for a long while. Watts sent me a new storage tank free of charge, and I was happy with that service. Unfortunately, the flavor persisted even with the new storage tank. I believe that Watts Premier storage tanks contain a lining that puts a faint, unpleasant flavor into the water.

PUR 3-Stage Vertical Faucet Mount Chrome FM-3700B Save 1% Off

PUR 3-Stage Vertical Faucet Mount Chrome FM-3700BThis one-click thing doesn''t work. It just kept falling off the sink every time I would turn on the water until finally it wouldn''t even stay on at all. There are several design malfunctions with this unit. I actually tried a few different ones thinking that particular one was defective but I soon learned the whole line suffers from the same problems. First of all, the entire weight of the unit rests on the connection to faucet. you can tell it''s not balanced well because every time you turn on the water lightly, the unit''s lifts up from the pressure of the water. Unfortunately, if you turn the water up past the point of dripping, the unit explodes off. In addition, the little piece that attaches to the faucet is made of plastic so after the unit falls off a few times the grooves completely wear away and it no longer stays on at all! VERY poorly designed!!! If only they had invested a few more cents into making that plastic piece metal!!! Too bad because the water really did taste wonderful!!!

I still love these filters even if the quality isn''t like before.

But still the best around.

I don''t trust the carafes.

Breville BDC550XL The YouBrew Glass Drip Coffee Maker Save 34% Off

Breville BDC550XL The YouBrew Glass Drip Coffee MakerThe Breville YouBrew Glass Coffee Machine With Built-In Grinder is a very good coffee maker that enables you to be the master of your domain when it comes to easily and consistently making coffee just the way you like it. But being able to do so won''t come cheaply. The retail/list price for this machine is $379.99, with the lowest internet price currently being $249.99.

You''ll have to decide if spending that price is worth it to you in order to be in full control of your coffee. To be honest, while I like this benefit, I doubt if I would have spent $249.99 for it. Luckily, I received it for free from the Amazon Vine program.

The benefits of the BCM 550XL are many, including but not limited to:

...its Brew IQ System, which claims to automatically ensure that water is heated to the optimal temperature, then supplies, based on the settings you quickly and easily select, the correct amount for your selected brew size and strength. (More about this claim a little later in this review).

... Has an integrated burr grinder for maximum freshness, flavor & aroma.

...Provides a large, backlit LCD with brewing progress and water level indicator.

...You can choose between brewing up to 12 cups (60oz) of coffee with the glass carafe that is provided (along with its top-fill water tank with full-tank indicator) or brewing a single cup -ranging from regular to extra large cup (7.5oz) to travel mug size.

...Choose from 7 adjustable strength settings and from 5 adjsustable flavor settings (in Single Cup setting only)

...Has a programmable clock and Auto-Start feature

...Is very easy to clean.

While there are many benefits, be aware that this product has a few factors that might be of concern to you:

...The machine is very large (almost 17" tall) and takes up a substantial amount of room on your counter. Plus, before considering it, you should measure the amount of space you have under your cabinets to make sure it will fit.

...It is quite noisy during the bean grinding process.

...Despite the earlier claim, it didn''t make the coffee quite as hot as I would have liked (although this might not be a problem for you unless you like your coffee very hot, as I do)

All in all, if you are a coffee lover and don''t mind paying an above average amount of money for a very verstaile coffee maker, then the Breville BCM 550XL is a product you should seriously consider.

I first started looking into expensive coffee makers when my wife said she wanted something more convenient. We had been using the Bodum Bistro Electric Burr Coffee Grinder, Black, the Cuisinart CPK-17 PerfecTemp 1.7-Liter Stainless Steel Cordless Electric Kettle and the Chemex Coffee Maker 8 Cup Classic to make our coffee. I can''t say enough good about that combination of products and the quality of coffee it consistently produced, but it had its negatives, too.

We were timing up the usage of 3 different devices, it was a bit of a chemistry experiment to get the coffee/water ratio just right, there''s definitely a (slightly difficult) technique when doing a pour-over method, and it required us to be standing there during the entire 15 minute-or-so process. Doesn''t sound like a huge deal, but it was admittedly just too much work, especially when rushing around at 6am. We needed something to get the job done right semi-automatically and the Breville YouBrew fit the bill.

::::: SINGLE CUP :::::

The single-cup mode works great. You choose from one of many sizes, choose from 5 flavor settings and 7 strength settings (type of taste versus how much of the taste). I wish the sizes displayed the ounces instead of arbitrary "Regular" or "Extra Large". The booklet tells you how many ounces each of these settings are, but that seems like an unnecessary step.

::::: CARAFE :::::

I thought you could, just like with the single-cup, choose how much coffee you want to brew. You cannot. The carafe mode brews using every bit of water you currently have in the reservoir and uses the appropriate amount of beans for that amount. It''s not a huge deal, but I initially thought the water reservoir was more like the bean hopper, holding excess and only using what you want. Not a big deal. You can only choose the strength setting, not the flavor profile as with the single-cup.

::::: FILLING :::::

The hopper only holds about .5 lb of coffee beans, but that''s okay; it will ensure that you don''t have old beans in the reserve. The hopper''s lid has a nice air-tight seal to lock in freshness. The water filling door opens slowly to reveal an odd, unit-width cavity to pour water into. The only problem is, the opening to the actual 60 oz. reservoir is all the way on the right, making it a little difficult for right-handed people to pour into. Any excess water that pours to the left of the opening is caught in the cavity, but it doesn''t slope down or anything, which means you need to tilt the entire unit to the right to get the water to fall in.

::::: WATER :::::

I didn''t read the fine-print in the manual; you cannot use distilled water with this unit. It uses an optical sensor to detect how much water is in there, so it technically shouldn''t be able to see truly distilled water (sensors like that can only see impurities in the water, not the water itself). It''s too bad, really. Using "drinking" water means that there are impurities in there, like minerals and sediment, which add taste, albeit slight or even unnoticeable. It may be necessary, however, as 0-TDS (perfectly pure) water is actually corrosive to some materials, which means it would potentially eat the plastics and metals in the coffee maker.

::::: GRINDER :::::

I don''t know all of the reasoning, but from what I understand, conical burr grinders produce the best grounds for extraction, and this has a ceramic one built right in. Breville has calculated the right ground size for this brewing method and grinds to that size. Some people are disappointed that you can''t adjust the ground size, but I don''t see a reason to. I figure they know the process better that me and I bought this for convenience, not modding.

Many people complain about the volume of the grinder. Make no mistake, it''s VERY loud, but that''s never an issue for me. It''s only slightly louder than my Bodum grinder and it seems like a dumb complaint anyway. it lasts for like 15 seconds. Get over it.

::::: FILTER & BASKET :::::

The included metal filter is nice, I suppose, but I don''t like it. It allows coffee grounds through to the coffee, which I hate. Luckily, you can use your own paper filters to avoid this problem. I use Melitta Basket Coffee Filters, Natural Brown (8 to 12-Cup), 200-Count Filters (Pack of 8) (recommended). I find that the paper produces a smoother, less bitter tasting coffee than the metal filter and hey, no grounds in my coffee!

The basket completely removes from the unit to dispose of the filter and clean it out. I love that it''s completely removable. I''m a bit of a germaphobe (my dad is a microbiologist), so I understand the importance of thoroughly cleaning, rinsing and drying things like that between uses. Stagnant moisture attracts mold and bacteria... yuck. The thing I DON''T love about it is that the basket is actually kind of a pain to clean. The grounds really clump up each time and while they aren''t hard to wash out, the filter basket has so many tight spots, small ridges, tiny ribs and slots that it''s hard to physically scrub and dry. And you need to do this between every use. Even if you don''t care about bacteria, if moisture and old grounds are in there, that will really mess with your next brew cycle.

::::: CARAFE & WARMING PLATE :::::

The glass carafe is just great. It pours very nicely, never spilling a drop. Many times, carafes dribble down the front as you finish pouring and this somehow completely avoids it. It also cleans easily, being mostly glass and having a wide mouth.

The warming plate kicks on immediately and runs for 2 hours after brewing (the display shows a countdown until it shuts off). You can''t shut off the screen without shutting the unit and plate off; not a big deal, just saying. The plate is actually too hot for my taste. I guess I appreciate that it keeps it drinkably hot for so long, but it nearly cooks the coffee. One time in particular, we poured all coffee but a few ounces. Several hours later, the warming plate shut off but it was too late. The coffee was completely burned up, gone, just leaving a nasty, burnt film on the bottom of the carafe. Once again, the carafe is easy to clean, but I found that annoying. I often shut the unit off and just reheat the coffee in the microwave hours later, if need be.

I chose the glass version over the thermal version because many people said you need to preheat the thermal carafe as to prevent it from sucking the heat right out of the freshly brewed coffee. This makes sense to me. Thick metal with high heat-coefficients tend to absorb temperatures, either hot or cold. The glass doesn''t do that and the warming plate helps prevent it even more. Also, many people say the thermal carafe pours poorly and I didn''t want to deal with that. Also, the glass was cheaper. Can''t argue.

::::: COFFEE TASTE :::::

I''m a pretty discerning coffee drinker and I''ve truly been spoiled with Chemex''s amazing goodness. I didn''t want to sacrifice taste for convenience with something like a Keurig, and this certainly avoids that issue. The YouBrew makes an amazing cup of coffee. Though I haven''t compared them in person, I''ve seen a number of blind taste tests online comparing the YouBrew to other top-of-the-line brewers, like the Technivorm Moccamaster Coffee Brewer With Thermo Carafe Technivorm 9587, and the YouBrew often comes out on top.

I haven''t had a bad cup of coffee yet. It does the following to make sure it''s always delicious:

Keeps beans fresh with air-tight hopper

Uses the "perfect" amount of beans every time

Grinds coffee just before brewing

Uses a quality burr grinder with optimal grind size

Maintains perfect brewing temperature water all the way through the process

Evenly distributes water over grounds with slotted channels in filter basket

Uses BPA-free plastics, stainless steel and glass all the way through the process

The YouBrew automatically grinds the "right" amount of coffee. You can certainly adjust the overall taste, though I''m not sure that affects the amount of beans being used or just changes the steeping time. You can choose your own amount of grounds by telling it you''re using your own grounds (it doesn''t grind anything and just trusts that you''ve put the right amount of coffee grounds in the filter). This allows you to put as much or as little coffee in the filter. I, personally, would never do this though. I trust that the experts that made it know more about brewing coffee than I do.

::::: CONVENIENCE :::::

I use the programming function to have it start making us coffee each morning. I simply set it to start each night and head to bed. It''s as easy as hitting "PROGRAM" and then "START"; it remembers the time you last programmed it for, so it works all throughout the weekdays for us. The single-cup function is great for my wife when I''m away and she doesn''t want to waste an entire pot of coffee. Cleaning, rinsing and drying the filter basket after ever use is honestly a pain, but it''s still less "work" than many other options. For the most part, you occasionally fill the hopper, fill the water tank and press start. Very easy and mostly hands-free.

::::: VALUE :::::

My wife had suggested a Keurig for convenience''s sake, but I didn''t want to sacrifice on quality or price-per-cup. That stuff gets expensive. Even the most-versatile and advanced Keurig 2700 Keurig® Vue® V700 Single serve coffee system, 1, Black/silver is still lacking in many areas and costs just as much as the YouBrew. Using the YouBrew only uses just the right amount of beans and a $0.01 filter, giving us a huge bang-for-the-buck. That very quickly makes up the slight difference between the YouBrew and a high-end Keurig.

::::: OVERALL :::::

The Breville YouBrew is largely hands-free, allows you to adjust the brew strength (and even flavor in single-cup mode), and does each step of the brewing process inside one relatively large machine. Oh, and it makes a mean cup of coffee that rivals the best of the best coffee makers. While it''s really expensive, it''s actually much more cost-effective in the long run than even the most economical pod-makers. It accomplishes my family''s goal of easily, automatically brewing delicious, snobbery-quality coffee. Despite a few caveats, I believe this to be one of the finest coffee makers on the market. I couldn''t be any happier with my purchase!

I was interested in seeing if this pot would make coffee better than our cheap Wal-Mart coffee maker. In short, yes. Now I am not a coffee lover. For me it needs to be mixed in ice cream to be drinkable. But, my wife loves her cup of coffee, so I thought she would be the perfect tester. After setting it up she brewed herself a cup using a generic bean bought at Wal-Mart. Afterwords, she said that it brewed a better cup than you could get at Starbucks. I was definitely impressed.

Getting started took a little bit of time and can be intimidating. Trying to figure out the settings took a few tries. Make sure the first time you try to use it is not at 6 AM as you are trying to rush off to work.

With the choice of flavor settings and strength settings this will brew a cup of coffee to fit everyone''s desires. I have read some of the other reviews and while it is true that you can adjust flavor and strength manually in any coffee maker; that will take a lot of trial and error. With the YouBrew just select the strength you want and it will grind the right amount of beans for that strength (more beans are ground for a stronger setting). The flavor profiles control the length of time the water is allowed to steep before dispensing.

While the machine is large; it is not unnecessarily large. Looking it over it did not appear to be overly bulky. Similarly priced models from competitors are this size. If counter space is an issue check the dimensions.

The noise level of the grinder could be an issue especially when you use the timer for an early morning cup of coffee. If the grinder is what wakes you up in the morning, then you may hate this machine. It is something you get use to, but the first few times it was startling.

I can see where the price would be an issue with some people, but if you look at the amount you may be spending buying coffee and the quality is as good, if not better, you will see that you will recoup the price of this machine within a couple of months. Also, the time saving of not waiting in line in the morning for coffee is a bonus.

I have been so impressed with this machine (I am a gadget guy) that I am trying to learn to like coffee. Now if they could make a machine that could brew me a perfect mug of beer...

This is a good-quality, high-end coffee maker, but it is ONLY for people with a sufficient amount of counter space and for VERY discriminating coffee-drinkers.

*** ***

This Breville, #BDC 550XL, with a 12-cup, glass carafe is a beautiful but a bit pricey coffee grinder/ brewer that makes an incredible cup of coffee.

My roommates have owned their reliable Cuisinart for the past 15 years. And, it still makes a very good cup of coffee. The Breville, at least on the surface, looks to be a "big brother" to the Cuisinart.

Both sport a handsome stainless steel exterior, a digital display as well as a coffee bean grinder. This Breville which, admittedly, is 15 years newer, also comes with the following controls:

* 5 flavor settings

* 7 strength settings

* 3 dispense settings

* Electronic gauge (that tells how much coffee remains)

The Breville is noticeably heavy--and this is without the water and coffee. It is also a very large machine. By my measurements, it is 16" x 12.5" x 8.5." And, roughly 14 lbs empty.

The bean grinder is noisy. We have several of those portable, multi-function grinders. Those grinders work just as well and is considerably quieter. The bean grinder''s noise was the only aspect of this machine that I really didn''t like and I feel that it could have been constructed better. (While noise is a deterrent, having one of those portable grinders --for about $10-serves to grind fresh coffee beans more quietly and simultaneously extends the life of this machine, essentially kills two birds with one stone.)

I brewed my favorite coffee, Choc Full O''Nuts, and it was considerably better tasting than the old $30 coffee maker I was using up until recently. That robust flavor that has a slight chocolate aftertaste and rich aroma, reminded me what I missed about eating in downtown New York City.

I also appreciated some practical brewing instructions that I had never read before in regards to temperature setting and temperature lost. It most certainly makes a difference.

Construction. I''d have to say, the construction is very good. As I mentioned, it is made out of a very durable stainless steel body. The pre-ground coffee holder is made out of a thick rubber housing. And, the bean grinder has a bit of a weight to it and not one of those light, cheap-feeling jobs. Although, it is manufactured for home-use (and, I suggest that you have sufficient counter space and love for coffee) but this is so well-built that it borders on industrial quality.

Price. The price for this is roughly $250--with Amazon''s fluctuationg price going south by $30-$50. I think with the reputable brands like Cuisinart, and Krups also making higher-end stainless steel coffee makers, a competitive price maybe for this quality at about $175-$200. Because this will last you, with care, a good 15 years.

So, with the exception of a very loud motor, everything else is very well made and the end result--a good cup of coffee--is achieved with this machine.

Breville, #BDC 550XL--4.5 stars.

I drink coffee everyday, usually 2x per day. I''m not super picky, I used to use a french press but after 2 kids and too much craziness my best coffee buddy is a single cup pod brewer. It makes a nice 16oz mug of perfect coffee for me in seriously about 1 min. When I saw this offered I jumped at the chance to try it out, as I said I love coffee and while I liked the convenience and speed of my pod brewer I really missed being able to adjust the flavor of my coffee or using different fresh beans, I thought this would be perfect and would also be great when my mom was visiting as she loves VERY VERY dark rich coffee.

I was right, and I was wrong. The good news is that this is a gorgeous coffee pot, yes it''s large but it''s extremely attractive and modern and since I don''t need a separate container to store coffee beans or a grinder out on the couter with it it''s actually a space saver. The coffee it makes is spot on. I can make a nice medium full bodied cup for myself and a cup of insanely dark deep flavored for my mom with the same beans. It''s fairly easy to clean up and it''s very easy to program and use. The problem for me is that it takes FOREVER (or maybe I''m just spoiled by my almost instant pod brewer) to make coffee. Even just making enough for one large mug takes ages. I''ve actually started it and then gone off to do something, checked on it and seen it was still brewing, gone off to do something else and actually forgotten about my coffee it takes so long (but at least it kept it nice and warm for me when I did remember LOL)

I think this pot is excellent for a crowd or if you have guests with different coffee tastes but unless you like a full pot each day and don''t mind waiting around for it I''d stick with something faster and less expensive. This lives in my cabinet unless we have people over.

Seven Plate KYK Genesis Home Water Filter and Ionizer

Seven Plate KYK Genesis Home Water Filter and IonizerOrdered KYK Harmony Home Water Filter and Ionizer. Received an email that day stating the product is on back-order for two weeks. The seller Water for Life USA stated that they will upgrade the order to the KYK Genesis water ionizer for free (this system has better filtration and ionization, more features)if I wanted. I said sure, and thanks. Received the order in a couple of days. My wife and I are extremely happy with the purchase. I did approximately twenty hours of research on all the Ionizer(s) Why? They are expensive. If you look at how KYK developed the unit with the features and history and the company that marketed this product you have a win, win.

I personally have this unit and bought it from Henna Hut. Those people are awesome and it was a pleasure to do business with them. They answered all of my questions and the low price was the icing on the cake. sure prices vary on shipping, but at 1525.00 I also got free filters and installation kit. Putting it in took all of 10 minutes.

Rubbermaid 20-Ounce Filtration Personal Bottle Save 15% Off

Rubbermaid 20-Ounce Filtration Personal Bottle, BlackAfter using the Bobble and Brita, I can easily say that this is the best filtration bottle that I''ve used thus far. Technically they all work, but this one works the best out of the three.

In my experiences, the Bobble was hard to squeeze and after a while the plastic seemed to bend to the point where it felt like it was going to crack. It never did, but it felt like that. The cap for the Bobble got lost almost instantly. The Brita filter bottle was made out of more flexible material and also held more water than the Bobble, but would leak through the cap, with or without the loop ring. After about 3 months of use (The normal life of 1 filter) the plastic on the filter that holds it to the spout was cracked, pretty much nullifying all filter capability. I''m not sure exactly when this happened. Also, the little plastic cap for this bottle was lost quickly too.

Which brings us to the Rubbermaid filter. All the problems that I''ve had with the other filter bottles have pretty much been fixed. by this.

Pros:

-The plastic is nicely flexible and always returns to it''s original shape (note that the shape is designed to be squeezed in one direction). It also has a rubber grip near the top for holding it.

-The cap is held on by a tether. One of the other reviewers mentioned that the tether can get in the way, but this is not the case. It has little plastic bumps on the tether such that if you open or close the tether all the way it''ll stick in that position until you pull it out.

-High volume output. when you squeeze it, you get a lot of water pushed through the filter. Considerably more than the other two bottles. The filter also has a 1-way gasket so that after squeezing, it is easy for air to rush into the bottle for the next squeeze.

-Filter Change Indicator. The filter itself has a ring that you rotate around when you first get it to remind you when to change it.

Cons: After two weeks of using this, I can only think of one.

-Lower volume than the Brita. The Brita holds 24 oz. This is 20oz, but it''s more than the bobble''s 13 or 18.5oz.

I don''t think I should have to say that you should only use potable water in this, this is no Lifesaver bottle that can filter raw sewage. But for filtering regular drinking water, this bottle works amazing. It''s very nice to take with me when I go into the city and fill it from public drinking fountains or even regular tap water when I don''t want to buy overpriced water bottles. But overall, I am very impressed by this product. In my opinion, the only way they could improve it is by making a larger volume bottle (only one model exists in different colors at the time of this 7/2011 writing) or by making an insulated one that I could fill with ice. Enjoy!

I ordered four of these bottles. Three purple and one black. The filter in the purple bottles screws into the cap per the description and seems to work well. The filter in the black bottle was of a different type. It had a ring around the top edge and no thread in the middle to screw it into the cap. The problem with the filter not screwing into the cap is that in order to fill the bottle you have to take the filter out by either reaching into the bottle or by tipping the bottle over dumping any remaining water into your hand which has to be there to catch the filter as it falls out. Either refill/removal method is unhygienic and is prone to losing the filter or having it fall into the sink or other place at which you are filling the bottle.

On the theory that the black bottles have a different type of filter I returned it and ordered another purple bottle. Unfortunately, the replacement purple bottle also had a filter that does not screw into the cap. The same item apparently comes in different styles and there is no way that I have found to tell which ones have the filter that screws into the cap and which don''t when placing the order.

The UPC codes for the two different bottle (filter) types is the same. However, on the UPC block of the bottle package there is what appears to be a model number. The bottle with the screw-on filter has a model number of L51783830A. The bottle with the non-screw filter has model number of L51783830B. The Amazon description of the bottle lists the model number as 1783830. It does not indicate whether it is the A or B version. The cap of the B model has a thread receptacle, so it should accept a filter that has a screw thread, but the filter that comes with the bottle does not have that thread.

The package of the screw type bottle has a copyright dated 2010. The non-screw bottle''s package has a copyright of 2011. I don''t know if I can generalize, but it appears that newer bottles do not come with the screw-on filter.

The picture available for the replacement filters shows the screw on thread on the top of the filter. I hope that doesn''t change when I replace the filters.

I am going to return the latest purple bottle.

I understand now the other comments left about the lid being annoying, you must hold it out of your way or let it hit your face while drinking. It did take some getting used to for me to drink out of this thing. I was dribbling water for a few days until I decided I must suck on the thing in order to not leak water onto myself. The filter really does remove any taste for the water you are drinking. I have poured "Aquafina" into it because I personally feel that that water has a very undesirable taste. It did manage to remove the very distinct taste of it. The filter has a dial for tracking when to change it out and you really have to refill the bottle once it gets to less than half full because it gets harder and harder to drink out of. I haven''t had any leaks so far and except for the first few days of embarrassing moments it''s a purchase.

Update: To my surprise there is way to avoid the cap hitting you in the face LOL! The cap has a small bump and when you pull the loop so that the bump falls under the rim of the bottle it locks in place. The next update will be in about 5 weeks after I return from a trip to Europe. I''ll be living off wine, beer and tap water that hopefully tastes great.

Warning the filter has been changed and as a result this bottle is useless. Bought this bottle earlier this year and was very happy with it, it worked perfectly. When I tried to obtain replacement filters I kept being sent a different type (see pictures submitted by another reviewer at the top), even though the picture was of the one I wanted, with a screw top. The new filters don''t screw into the top, but sit on the top of the bottle, with holes around the edge. So, not all of the water goes through the filter, but worse the lid no longer seals and so the bottle leaks in your bag and dribbles down your clothes when you drink from it. Rubbermaid have now confirmed to me by email that the new type of filter is now the only one available here is their reply "The 1st generation filter refill is no longer available. It has been replaced with the Generation 2 filter. The Generation 2 simply sits in the top of the bottle and the lid screws down to the bottle on top of the filter. It no longer attaches to the filter". It defies belief that someone could have ''improved'' the filter from a simple one that worked perfectly to one that is not fit for the purpose. Looks like I''m not the only one to have this problem as I see other reviewers are commenting.

Brita Riviera Water Pitcher Save 14% Off

Brita Chrome Water Filter PitcherThe Brita system is the best I''ve seen for home filtration. The water tastes pure and clean. I would recommend this for anyone and the savings over bottled water is astounding. In many cases, it even tastes better.

Contrary to advertisement, this system is very quick and easy. We are giving this as gifts to our family this year for Christmas.

I live in military housing that''s been around since WW2. Even though they''ve FINALLY decided to get around to changing the water pipes, I''m still not too thrilled about drinking the tap water.

Anyways, for the past few years, my family has been using bottled water. I estimate that we easily spent about 1/2 a grand on it a year. On just WATER!!!

At the store, I came across one of these and decided to give it a try and I''m so glad I did!

For one thing, the product itself is not that expensive, and maintaining it is cheap since you only need to replace the $3-$4 filter every 4 weeks.

I was so impressed with it, I rushed out and bought a 2nd, so I could have one pitcher for the refrigerator and the other available at the counter.

I really like the filter replacement indicater on it. It''s easy to set and with how busy my life gets, buying filters is the last thing on my mind. So, it''s nice having this there as a reminder.

I also like that it''s dishwasher safe. (except for the top part, due to the filter replacement indicater-but that can be easily hand washed) So, every few days, I just put it through the dishwasher and it gets it nice and clean.

The only drawback is that it''s hard for my grade school and pre school kids to use, so it''s not very kid friendly. So, I have to pour for them every time they''re thirsty, but it''s not a big deal to me, so I won''t dock any stars from my rating.

I highly recommend this for anyone who won''t drink tap water!

I have owned this pitcher for over a year and have never had a problem with it leaking.

Read Best Reviews of Brita Riviera Water Pitcher Here

Sharp design, only problem is they put form over function when designing it. First problem, if the water hasn''t drained completely from the upper (non filtered) basin, and you try and pour the pitcher, the unfiltered water pours out with the filtered water. Second problem, when you fill it up, if you let the water overflow the basin, the first thing it does is drain into the filtered basin. In the older round designs, the upper basin was water tight with the lid on, so you could pour out filtered water before the upper basin was empty. If you overflowed the upper basin the water would got over the side and not into the filtered basin. This allowed the user to set it under the sink and not have to stand there for 30 second to shut off the water. They took a definite step backwards with this design. It''s really amazing that in the year 2005, such bad product design is still making to the store shelves.

Other reviewers have said the same but I will reiterate:

--Filter timer is a joke. It only counts time, not gallons filtered. I don''t need this because we already own several calendars.

--Sectional lid must have been designed by the marketing department. They fit together awkwardly and fall off easily. If you try to pour a class of water with even a little still left in the upper chamber, the whole assembly falls apart as you are pouring.

--Lower compartment easily contaminated by unfiltered water.

--My unit grows ALGAE in it after about 10 days. You would think that I must leave it on a sunny window sill, but I don''t. It lives on the kitchen counter and I live in the Pacific Northwest where it is cloudy 9 months out of the year. So, anyway, the unit has to go in the dishwasher once a week (hand washing doesn''t cut it....algae grows right back). Previous Brita (we''ve had many) and PUR pitchers did not have this problem.

As a consumer I want to ask: What is so friggin hard about designing a decent water pitcher for cripes sake?!!!

Generally this pitcher demonstrates what is wrong with so many companies that make consumer products. They pay damn little attention to engineering a good product and put all their effort into giving it "purchase appeal" and marketing it.

Try something else.

These last about 6 months in my house. The water gets a dusty dirty taste to it when I go too long without replacing them. Use a pre-filter like this as a beginning of any water filtration system. I''m getting a TDS rating of 25-35ppm after the membrane and thats letting it flush for 30 minutes and 1 month of use. My old AMI membrane was putting out 5ppm after being 4 years old.
