I received this humidifier 2 weeks ago after searching for a decent humidifier to replace the one i owned that was famous for robbing me in replacements filter, etc. fees. This thing fits the bill. The design is great, it''s super quiet, and gets the job done. In choosing this product i read all the reviews. The reviews that made me hesitant to purchase this were the complaints that said: a)that the furniture on and around the humidifier got wet all the time, b)that the machine did not cut off if empty, as advertised, c)that the machine is hard to clean, and d) that it makes a lot of noise.

With hesitation, I purchased the product in good faith.

I was immediately pleased by the design. I read the owner''s manual even though i thought it all was a "no brainer". The manual actually explained a)how to adjust the mist as to not wet the furniture around it, and b)that the machine will turn off when empty, but the light on the device will remain lite...obviously the part those that said the machine did not turn off failed to read, and c)how the machine is easy to clean with a vinegar or chlorine solution.

Cleaning is easy. I recommend using the bleach solution as bleach will kill anything..not to mention it also gets rid of the discoloration.

Lastly, the sound the comes from the machine is very subtle, but when u hear it, it is exactly like the soothing sounds of a filter running on a fish tank. It actually helped me sleep... having this white, very subtle noise.

I like this thing. My skin and nose are happy.

I hope this clarifies some of the ambiguity i found in the other reviews....

I purchased the Crane cool mist humidifier in Dec''10 and have used it, with great success, for many months. With all the negative reviews (about 20%) I almost didn''t purchase this machine. But I''m glad I did, because it works really well for what it is: a mid size/capacity humidifier.

First of all: ***this humidifier has a 2.3 gallon per day maximum output, with a .9 gallon tank.*** Amazon''s initial title for this (and many other humidifiers) mentions daily output capacity rather than tank size... this may be confusing, although the correct specs are prominently listed on the Amazon page fifth bullet point in the "product features" section. As for Crane (the manufacturer), their package clearly states a 2.3 gallon daily output, and .9 gallon tank size... The reviewers complaining about the "misleading name" should try emailing Amazon suggesting a title change on their website... instead of writing a 1 or 2 star review of the product. That would be more helpful and more fair.

As for the product itself:

A few buyers obviously received defective machines; this has to be expected on some level with any manufacturer.

But having read over the negative reviews, I realized that most of the complaints were due to improper use of the machine.

It is essential to read the instruction manual and use the machine as intended by design. Doing so will avoid the pitfalls described by most of these 1-2 star review writers. For reference, I have addressed their most common complaints below:

1) White dust buildup in the room: use filtered or distilled water. This is important if you have hard tap water. (85% of American homes do.) I run my tap water through a Brita filter; the exchange ion resin lowers the concentration of calcium carbonates, accordingly softening tap water. It also helps keep the humidifier cleaner by removing organic impurities, and I have had no white dust buildup. ***If your water is particularly high in mineral content, you should use distilled water, or else opt for a vaporizer-type (humidifying) machine, which creates water vapor free of white dust.***

2) Limited effectiveness: you are trying to humidify too large a room. In my 500 square foot living room level the machine helps a little; in my 150 square foot bedroom the machine is more than adequate.

3) Height of machine: the manual directs you to put the humidifier *at least* a few feet off the ground; there''s no reason you can''t place it even higher up if you wish. Doing so will disperse the mist more effectively.

4) Machine runs out of water: try turning it down to about 2/3 power instead of full power. The machine is practically noiseless at this setting and the water tank if actually filled to the rim will last at least 8-10 hours.

5) Machine makes bubbling noise on high: see #4 above.

6) Wet area forms immediately around humidifier: you have the machine turned up too high for the conditions in your room. This is explained in the instruction manual: you need to make sure the mist isn''t falling down onto the surfaces around the machine; otherwise moisture will accumulate on those surfaces. Turn the power dial down until the vapor stream is fully evaporating in the air.

7) Machine leaks: Take care that the water tank fits snugly into place, with no gaps. Also, make sure you have the clear rubber ring that fits inside the tank cap. During my initial setup, this little (1 1/2" diameter) ring came loose and rolled away, and I almost didn''t notice. The ring ensures a tight seal on your water tank cap; without it, I''m pretty sure the machine would leak.

8) Machine gets moldy: you are not following the correct cleaning routine, as described in the manual. You need to empty and rinse out the tank daily, and empty the bottom part of the unit too. Once a week you should use a white vinegar/warm water mixture in the tank and bottom of unit (see manual).

I hope this was helpful. If my humidifier breaks down I will certainly update this review.

We bought this humidifier for the bedroom because we were waking up every morning with dry, cracked lips and sore throats and sinus due to the very dry air in the house during the winter. This unit pretty much solved the problem for us.

Pros:

Very quiet. I imagine if you set it next to the bed you could hear it, but we set it across the room and the only thing I hear is the occasional bubbling as it takes in more water.

Easily adjustable. The knob on the front that controls flow is infinitely adjustable, so you can get just the flow you want.

Easy to fill. Just take off the reservoir and fill from the sink.

Puts out enough moisture to humidify a fairly large room. Our bedroom is 16 by 20 feet, plus a master bath, and it makes a big difference in the humidity of the rooms.

Cons:

It doesn''t seem to automatically turn off when it runs out of water like the description says. Maybe ours is broken and maybe not, but it doesn''t turn off. No big deal except the wasted energy (which can''t be much) but I wish it did shut down.

I wish the reservoir was bigger. The size it is makes it easy to take and fill, but you pretty much have to fill it every single day. It''s a trade-off, but I would have preferred something twice the size that was a bit more difficult to fill due to size.

The Bad:

The Faucet Adaptor 15/16 27 Male Thread sent with the unit was plastic or teflon, in which I personally do not see how this would work with anyone''s kitchen sink aerator because the threads are too soft and WILL STRIP.

Solution: I would go out to Lowes/Ace Hardware/Home depot and buy the brass version. If you can, buy one with at least 5 threads showing each end. I did get the one that looks like it has 2-3 threads, but it was tricky to get it installed soundly with no leaks. I screwed the brass part into my diverter part first, then spun it on the sink to get it to seal properly.

The Good:

* The Filter water flow is awsome.

* The spout appeared to be cheaply made, but don''t worry, it swivels fine and does not leak at all.

* The water quality for my first week is great.

* The Price per gallon will be less than 1 cent if it lasts even 1 year with me.

Conclusion:

I used to use an "NSA" filter in the 1990''s in California, it sold for $60.00, so the price of this unit considering inflation is well priced. I think the other brands that require replacement after so many gallons, or 1-2 months are a SHAM. You will not find a great product like this because your local business only keep items on the shelf that force you to return for the replacement filters often.

Examples:

ZeroWater (12-14 Gallons then it is bad!!! Most expensive gravity filter, and very slow!!!)

Britta Lasts 1-3 months, Good portable solution, but very slow and expensive to keep buying filters.

The filter is good and appears to be high quality. I gave it four stars because my facet required the use of the adapter I received with the filter. The adapter was cheap and did not fit correctly. I did get another one from the local hardware store. I cannot believe that the company would risk its reputation to save a few pennies on an inferior adapter.

I visited relatives in Waco, Tx during early 2005. Their city water had a terrible taste and odor. Shortly thereafter I saw a product demonstration on TV for this Paragon water filter and immediately thought of my relatives in Waco. I ordered the filter for them as a gift. Saying that they were pleased would be a wild understatement. Several of their friends were also impressed with the filter and ordered one for themselves. Time passed and I relocated to the Dallas area. The Dallas city water was also less than desireable and I ordered a filter for myself. That was over six years ago. My filter has worked flawlessly during this period. It is nearing the point of needing to be replaced and I was very pleased to see that Model 3050 is still available.

We absolutly love this filter. We purchased one from sears over 6 years ago and finally had to replace it this year. It is the easiest and best filter I have ever used. Where we live the water is very hard and since we are on a well (no city water for us) it can have some sediment in it. This is the best filter ever. We have tried other filters and styles. From pitcher to faucet mount and none are as good as this 5 stage filter. Now it may be ugly, but we have it in our mud room. We fill up a 5 gallon square water holder,that we found at wal-mart, and keep it in our fridge. This keeps the water cold and easy to access any time. I am a steam espresso machine user who was forced to shop around when the quality of the product diminished in recent years. Our biggest reason for replacing a machine is it quits frothing milk, despite vinegar or cleaning or steaming through the wand after finishing with the milk frothing. I learned since starting the latte/cappacino process that I perhaps didn''t run enough steam through it when finished, but the steam machines have limited capacity before water and steam run out unless you refill. I rarely had time for that.

I tried a pump espresso machine a couple years ago and didn''t care for the taste--the coffee was too weak and I didn''t like how it steamed milk. So recently I tried a Saeco Via Venezia which was okay--the coffee tasted bitter, though I tried a different grind and it was some better. But for the money I felt it wasn''t worth it, so returned it after a week of trying.

Having second thoughts about going back to the steam machine, I noticed this machine is cheaper and read that the internal components are the same as some of the Saeco models. So I tried this and it''s working for us. The housing is cheaper but I don''t care. It''s smaller than some which works for my space. And one can tell by how it pumps espresso it is as good as the more expensive ones (including the Via Venezia I tried).

A con for me is the steaming wand. I don''t like it as well as the Via Venezia black plastic one because we like more foam and air in our milk. The factory wand is good enough, but I decided to buy a black plastic turbo frother (same as comes on Via Venezia) to see if it would fit the tube. It does and gets the milk exactly like we want it (more foam). Disadvantage is it hangs even lower so you can''t fit a pitcher under it. I am elevating my machine (or you could rotate it and have the pitcher come up at the edge of the counter). For me it''s worth it and I had to elevate my steam machine for the same reason. This steam tube doesn''t articulate up and down, just side to side, but for me it''s not an issue.

So, I tried Ascaso Basic and don''t care for it--maybe I didn''t use it correctly? I tried Saeco Via Venezia and it''s fine--works the same as this but has frothing wand on the left side, water tank isn''t too accessible (but is bigger), and has more stainless steel. I think its portafilter is chrome plated brass (heavier, "better"). It''s wider and harder to move around/takes up more space.

This Saeco Poemia is narrower, lighter, plastic housing plated with stainless so looks nice but is "cheaper." The internal components are the same but the portafilter is, I guess, stainless (lighter weight). However, I do not see a difference and like what this puts out just fine. It is as good at least as the Via Venezia''s output. The top lid that covers the water container easily bounces off if you touch it but goes back on quickly (instead of being hinged). And the front drip tray comes off easily IF you bump it, but again goes back easily. To me, these factors are just things to learn about using it, not disadvantages, because I like the lighter weight and size of it!

IN SUMMARY: We are 4 oz./cup steam espresso users who couldn''t get enough punch in our coffees with some pump machines, but don''t care to resort to nonpressurized portafilters that require tamping and talent to "dial in a shot." That''s over the top for us, so I got a pressurized portafilter and fill it with less than 2 scoops, tamp it lightly (very) with the included scoop/tamp, and brew. We end up with maybe 3 or 3.5 ounces per coffee cup and can steam plenty of milk for each of us. I use a 12 oz. pitcher for my cup but might need the space of the 20 oz. for my husband''s larger coffee cup.

The advantage to these pump machines is they have tanks of water, so no more sweating about limited steam production or time. The advantage to this Poemia is the reliable Saeco boiler and components. If you find the frothed milk isn''t "frothed" enough (playing with it by raising it closer to the surface of the milk then back lower increases froth quantity), you can nab a turbo frother for Saeco/Gaggia (Saeco/Gaggia Pannarello (1230)Product No.: SA227431350) for about $10 to $20. Even if you buy that, this machine is cheaper than ones that cost a hundred+ more.

NOTE: It is important to release the water from the steam wand first, then froth milk, or you get water in it that dilutes it. Just steam into an empty container for a few seconds to vent the water. Also, if you steam milk first, then brew coffee, be sure to run steam a few seconds until the steam light is out. This is called temperature surfing and lowers the boiler''s temperature to brew temp so it''s just right. Always run steam through the steam wand after finished steaming milk, until water runs out, to refill the boiler, because steaming empties it. (Read section 4.5 of the owner''s manual about refilling the boiler.) These steps just take a few seconds, once you learn them, and keeps the boiler from being drained and damaged.

This is a great espresso machine on a budget. I previously got a De''Longhi BAR32 Retro and returned it after a week of struggling to get good espresso trying any kind of tamping and grounding techniques. The Poemia is so much better. The key is that the portafilter is pressurized and there is no need to tamp the coffee grounds precisely. There is a valve that automatically opens when the pressure is optimal for brewing. The espresso comes out with great crema. I was able to even make the so called ''long espresso'' (running the machine until I get 5-6 ounces instead of 2-3) while still keeping great taste and crema.

The user manual contains an error in the description how to prepare the machine for first use or after a prolonged period of non use. It says to lock only the portafilter without the coffee grounds basket and run the machine until it is out of water. This of course will not seal the filter and the hot water will spray out of the filter. The coffee grounds basket has to be inside the portafilter.

Lets hope this thing will last, I will update the review if something happens.

UPDATE 9/19/2012.

I got a used Saeco (or Starbucks) non pressurized portafilter from eBay. It turned out I like it more this way. I no longer use the original pressurized filter. Either way the espresso I''m getting is still better that the one from the De''Longhi BAR32 I tried and returned.

We have owned numberous espresso machines including Starbucks Barista (Seaco), a couple of DeLonghi''s, and a couple of Cuisinart EM-100''s.

This is a much smaller unit than either the Barista or the Cuisinart. It''s much more like a DeLongi as it has a small water reservoir and has a faux stainless finish plastic case.

It uses a lighter weight Saeco pressurized portafilter than the Starbucks Barista. Unfortunately, their is practically no crema. Our backup Philip Senseo makes better crema.

Disappointed for the price, but will keep it for a vacation home unit to make cheap lattes as the foamer wand works well.

This is my first Espresso Machine. My wife and I decided to go with the Poemia after watching and reading countless reviews, this was clearly the best option for the entry level machine, considering our budget.

We got home, did the first use cycle and prepared. We were able to froth our first pitcher with no issues or complications thanks to the Panarello steam wand and we pulled our first shot, which turned out to be pretty easy and good. We didn''t even add sugar to that first cappuccino as it was really good by itself. Since the Panarello does all the frothing work for you, when using the right sized pitcher, the clearance from the wand to the counter shouldn''t be a problem.

We pulled a couple of more drinks for the family and everybody seemed to enjoy it very much.

My only complain might be that the passive cup-warmer doesn''t get hot enough until after a couple of uses, but this was expected and is really not a major problem at all. As other reviewers note, the dip tray does have a loose connection from the rest of the machine, but the bright side is this makes it easy to take off and clean.

This turned out to be a great purchase and a whole lot of fun.

After my cheaper espresso machine broke down, I decided to upgrade to a better one. I did my research and liked the reviews for the Saeco, and that it has the same internal parts as the more expensive units. So, I''ve been using it for a few days now (I will update the review if need be).

The machine looks good and it was well packaged. The instructions are OK, but not intuitive plus they''re translated from another language. If you''ve used one of these before, it''s the same procedures, so don''t fret.

First, the on/off switch hides in the back of the unit, which is a totally inconvenient place. It took me a minute to find it, because I put the unit against my kitchen wall on the counter and I was looking at it to find out how it turns on after I plugged it in! Now, I have to move the unit forward and back every time I have to flip the switch. This could be a deal breaker if combined with the other flaws.

Is this machine supposed to stay on for hours? I don''t think so, because the machine preps the water to high temp & builds steam ready for use. Do you want to have a machine ready all the time? What would this do to the parts inside if it''s all the time? I don''t know. Placing the switch to the back of the unit might make someone think that "flip it and forget about it"....

Second, I found that it''s best to wait a bit more after the green light comes on before you switch to making your coffee. The temp/pressure are better thus. Also, before you steam your milk, run it for a few seconds as the first stuff that comes out is water only and this will definitely dilute your milk. So, collect this water in something and throw it out. The frothing is decent, after a little practice, but I''m still concerned (because I tested it) with water not steam being put into the milk. Maybe the machine needs an extra moment after the green light comes on for steaming so it gets really hot to vaporize the water and deliver only steam.

The coffee pod/container/base have to be cleaned after each use. There''s extra watered coffee dripping out after you''ve done getting your espresso, especially if you also use the steamer. I mean, you don''t have to, but there will be watery stuff in the base that collects it. It''s easy to pull the base off and give it a rinse.

The steam-froth part moves from side to side, not up-down, and it has a very low clearance, which makes it more difficult to use many milk containers for steaming milk. I steam very small quantity in a small cup so it''s OK for me but if you want to steam more milk for lattes you have to find another way. Because it does not swing out enough (or slightly up) it''s not convenient to slide the milk container underneath for steaming. Really bad design here.

Another miss is that the top cover over the water and tamper isn''t hinged. So, you have to remove it and place it somewhere, and when you put it back, it goes only one way as it''s not even on all sides. Cheaper coffee makers have hinged top covers. Flip it, get the tamper, close it. Easy, but not this one. Not a biggie, but at this price, I expected a better design here too.

The most important thing though is that this machine makes great espresso/cappuccino, assuming you use good water and good coffee, so this machine does well for what it''s supposed to. I can tell the difference in the taste and appearance. The temperature matters in coffee making so it must be perfect. This one has it right. I''m using the same brand (Lavazza) with this machine as with the one that just broke and I can tell the difference in the taste. The coffee looks better too as there''s a nice crema in the cup.

Overall, a good machine (thus far, after a few days using it) with design flaws.

Update: I eventually returned this unit. The design flaws got to me....from the switch, to the steamer, to getting the coffee basket properly seated.

This is *almost* identical to the chrome faucet which Watts includes with the WP-5 reverse osmosis kit. Hold the lever down to dispense water, or snap it into an up position to have it stay on.

Quite a bit of noise can be heard through the air gap hole while the RO tank is filling. It sounds similar to someone a few houses down spraying water from a hose into a small pond.

This faucet works well, except for one important installation caveat. Unlike the chrome faucet included with the current version of the Watts WP-5, this replacement does not include a flow restrictor. And, the flow restrictor included with the WP-5''s chrome faucet doesn''t fit into the red waste tube of this black faucet -the red tube''s inner diameter is too small, even though its outer diameter matches the red tube from the chrome faucet (1/4").

I found out the hard way that the flow restrictor is needed to reduce the flow of waste water from the membrane. Without it, water will go gushing down your drain via the black waste tube on this faucet -but a good bit of water will also continuously spurt out the air gap hole (onto your counter and hopefully not far from your sink).

So, if you have a current model WP-5 which includes the newer chrome faucet that matches this one, you will need to need to cut off a length of the red tubing from the chrome faucet. Then, insert the flow restrictor (a red, plastic, spiral shaped piece) into that red tubing. Then, union it to the black faucet''s red tubing using a 1/4" Watts Quick Connect -you can get this part at the big home improvement store. Then you are good to go ahead and connect the red tubing to the manifold''s drain port.

Final note: the WP-5 installation manual is decent, but has a few errors and and a few items that are out of date. This flow restrictor, for instance, was apparently built in to the manifold assembly before. With my unit, however, it was in a special baggie inside the chrome faucet box, with an attached page containing installation instructions for that part. Apparently, Watts changed the parts and install procedures, but didn''t fully document it and didn''t update the replacement faucets to include the required tubing inner diameter and flow restrictor part.

I do not think that a Mr, Coffee will take the place this one left. It just seems to me that one should last more then 24 months. Making only one pot of coffee a day. It was a good price for the product, just not worth the time and trouble to replace one with another.

Paid too much for this at Lowes. Not entirely happy with the coffee it brewed. It worked for about three weeks and now it slowly brews approximatly half a pot and boils the rest of the water dry. Cleaning the machine with vinegar has made no difference in the brewing.

I used to use spring water which meant every week i had to go to the store to pick up 7 gallons, drag them home, rotate my stock...what a pain. not to mention that I hated spending money for what was free from my faucet. But my tap water was sometimes yellowish, sometimes tasted of chlorine, and sometimes just tasted bad. I''ve been using the Dupont filter for several years and I am thrilled that I don''t have to haul gallon jugs home every week (although it was a good workout...). The Dupont filter gives me tap water that tastes at least as good as what I was getting from the jugs and I don''t have to worry about something leaching out of the plastic containers into my water.

I appreciate that this is a 4 stage filter instead of a 3 stage. Dupont makes filters for industry so they have a lot of experience removing contaminants (I''m a chemist) so they would use a 4 stage if it offered benefits.

I have noticed that there is some variability in the life of the filters. This is more noticeable with the 200 gallon cartridges than the 100 gallon filters. I use the meter as a guide, but when I notice that the flow is slowing I change the filter. I don''t think this is the fault of the filter. I think this is the result of water quality variation from my water source. If there are more contaminants going into the filter, the filter will get clogged sooner. So in some ways, I actually appreciate the filter more when it needs to be changed before 200 gallons because I just think of what I COULD have been drinking.

And yes, I would, and have recommended this product to my friends and family.

I''ve tried most of the other filters that you attach to your kitchen faucet and because we have really good water pressure they''ve all leaked at some point. The Dupont filter hasn''t and I''ve been using them for 2 years now. I bought the original filter system at Walmart, but as some other reviewers have noted, you can''t always find them locally. I purchased these on Amazon and buying 3 at one time was cheaper than buying just one.

As far as how effective this filtering system is, without it, there''s a slight after taste to the water here in St. Louis. I never noticed it until I moved away for 3 years and then returned. With the filter, I can''t taste it. It was worse when we lived in Avon Park, Florida where the water had a distinctive nasty taste to us. Again, this filtration system all but removed that strange after taste.

Pros: Easy to install, doesn''t leak even with higher water pressures, does a good job of eliminating after taste

Coffee is my beverage of choice. Drink it constantly. I''m not a compulsive gourmand, but over the years I''ve gained enough knowledge to be sophisticated and demanding of a decent drink.

Coffee pots have a simple mission, really. To properly heat and immerse the grounds in water so that what goes into the carafe is hot and flavorful. There are a lot of other nuances about the beans, the grind, the water; but that''s not the pot''s problem. In our self imposed spaz world of multitask, no-time-to-do-anything-intelligently, insanity we need clocks and timers on everything to ensure we can snatch at a premade cup of joe on our way to the car.

The Bunn home system answer to these issues is that they promise a 3 minute brewed pot, on demand, of nice hot coffee. Who needs timers. It''s that quick.

Welllll.

You have to understand that Bunn''s are preload immersion heaters. When you first unbox the pot, before you ever turn the pot on, you will need to fill the coffee maker with water ( good idea to keep an old carafe around to measure your water input ''cause Bunn''s don''t have water levels to see how much water is in the tank ). Once you''ve filled the reservoir you can turn the pot on. Then you have to wait 15 minutes to preheat the reservoir. I don''t know how you feel about having a constant running appliance on your table top while no ones home. I unplug all my kitchen appliances when I''m not using them. So if you want home brew with an unplugged Bunn you have to do the preload ritual every time you plug it back in.

As to making the coffee. The STX is a 10 cup carafe styled maker. Some of the complaints made by others demonstrate their unfamiliarity with the concept. Under high heat coffee deteriorates in 15 minutes ( remember the ole lead pencil flavored burned coffee? yum yum. ) For better tasting and relatively sustained heat it is best that you make smaller batches and use a carafe. You sacrafice the convenience of not having to make more for the happiness of good brew. ( Another trick anybody who ever used a thermos should know is that you should preheat the thermos by putting warm tap water in it for a minute before brewing. Putting hot coffee in a cold thermos is duhh. )

Coffee of your choice goes into the hopper. The box comes with 20 Bunn paper filters for starts. Place your empty warmed, and sealed thermos carafe under the hopper. Open the water port on the top of the Bunn. Use an old coffee pot carafe to put the desired amount of fresh cold water into the top of the pot. There is a ground in the pot that will not allow brewing to occur until you close the water port on top of the Bunn. Remember you have a preheated reservoir. As soon as you close the port water smacks your grounds and the carafe starts to fill.

Is it worth it? Are you getting that much better of a cup of coffee the Bunn way? I can''t answer that for you. I just got the pot yesterday and I''ve had two pots out of it so far. You can certainly infer that this isn''t the Holy Grail of coffee pots. ( But what is. )

If you play by the pre-immersion rules you can get a really fast pot of coffee. It does a pretty good job of keeping your coffee reasonably hot. I have yet to find a home system that got you a cup that stayed hot to the last swig: the Bunn came close, but no cigar.

How does the coffee taste? It''s very good. But the Bunn filters are very heavy and they tend to homogeonize the begeeppers out of what you''re drinking. By that I mean the output has a very bright flavor and nose that is very pleasing to the front of your mouth. But some of the back of the palate strong notes get stripped away from the coffee. I''m going to have to go get a reuseable basket and see what sort of results that will allow.

I''ll probably update this later with some matured impressions.

This is an excellent system. But it''s one in a busy field.

Addendum:

It''s been a few days since I''ve started using the Bunn. I did get a gold reusable basket filter, and as far as I''m concerned it is a large improvement over the Bunn paper filter. The Bunn method does tend to make a very smooth cup of coffee; but the basket filter let a little more sediment into the cup and gives you some back of the palate flavoring.

Also I tend to use a heaping tablespoon of grounds per cup. Too much for the Bunn. Three cups on this system with my usual mix and Im getting a wicked buzz from coffee I haven''t experienced in decades (lol). For 8 cups 6 tablespoons is plenty.

I''m sticking with the 4 stars. This is a well thought out system. But the output is an acquired taste. I''m not swept off my feet by the Bunn.

We''ve had the Bunn STX coffee maker for a couple of months now. It replaced out 10 year old Bunn BT-10 that develop a leak.

Pluses:

Design. It''s gorgeous! Looks like something Jonathan Ivee of Apple would design. Form follows function here (always a good thing) but form is fantastic!

Good hot coffee fast. Less than 5 minutes for a carafe full of perfect coffee. Can''t beat that.

Customer service. As good as it gets.

Minuses:

The carafe. You cannot pour out all the coffee in the carafe without taking the lid off. Towards the end of the carafe, coffee will start to come out of the hole in the lid. And the rubber seal in the top of the lid was not well thought out. It comes out easily. I washed the lid in the dishwasher (top rack) and it must''ve come out. I didn''t notice it till later. I emailed Bunn customer service and they sent me two of them for free. I love their customer service. With the old BT-10, the deliming tool was a steel spring-type contraption. Ours got rusty and Bunn customer service sent us a new one free of charge.

So, would I buy it again? Yes. I only wish the carafe was more like our old BT-10.

I REALLY like this coffee maker but I wish I could give it a rating of 4.5 because a 5 implies it''s perfect and well, there are a couple of things I would change if given the chance.

First, and most importantly,it makes great coffee! It''s piping hot when I pour my first cup and it tastes worlds better than the coffee I was getting from my 1 year old Mr. Coffee. The unit looks and feels solid and the set up is easy. In about 15 minutes or so we were ready to brew our first pot.

It''s fast, the second you close the lid it, the stream of coffee starts and the pot is done in 3-4 minutes. The thermal carafe keeps the coffee much warmer than my old glass carafe ever did, although it isn''t perfect.

OkSpeaking of imperfections, here''s the few things I would improve if I could:

I''m used to setting up my coffee pot the night before and having it ready when I wake up, this unit does not have that feature. It brews fast, so I didn''t think it would be a big deal however I now have to get up and in my "morning fog" prepare the coffee and "warm up" the carafe...This in reality probably adds as much time to the process as it takes to brew the whole pot. Most of the time is spent warming the carafe (waiting for the water to get hot out of the tap seems to take forever in my place at 5am) so I might try experimenting with setting up as much as possible the night before and then just warming up the carafe or seeing how long it stays warm if I don''t pre-warm it. Anyway, a delay feature would be added if I were Queen.

I would also make the mouth of the carafe just a tiny bit wider so your hand could slip in and out for cleaning. Also, while the carafe pours like a dream (no dribbles like Mr. Coffee left for me to clean up evey morning) a tighter seal would make the coffee stay hotter longer. This is a minor detail in my personal use, since I have a cup or 2 and I''m out the door.

Lastly, MADE IN CHINA. Just seeing this on a product now raises questions about it''s safety. I would feel so much better about the product if I saw "MADE IN USA" instead.

I''m thrilled with my new coffee pot, and as long as the unit proves reliable, this will be a purchase I won''t regret. I''ve quit stopping off for a "good" cup of coffee on my way to work, and just taking my own.

It seems that everyone who writes a review for a high-end coffee maker is either a condescending twit or an utter dipshizzle. I hope I can find a middle ground (utter twit?) to help you decide to buy the Bunn STX coffee maker.

The initial set up of this coffee maker is easy. My initial impression of the coffee maker is that it is simple, sturdy, and well made. Most of the components are stainless steel, including the funnel basket, the thermal carafe and the tank. The lid to the thermos is well-made, with clear arrows indicating the quarter-turn to tighten the lid. There are no leaks, fluid pours out quickly, and maybe a tablespoon of coffee is left in the bottom when you pour the last cup. There is only one "vacation" switch that controls the tank heater: on or off. To brew coffee you slide shut the lid of the water inlet--after the thermal carafe is replaced under the funnel, which might be contrary to your current routine.

Initially, you must prime the tank heater with water before you can make your first batch. The instructions were clear and this was easy. A pot of coffee truly takes less than three minutes to brew with the machine''s preheated water. This coffee maker is supposed to be left on so that it keeps the water in the tank at 200 degrees at all times; if you choose to turn off the pot to save electricity, it takes approximately 10 minutes to heat the water again. The machine is somewhat loud when it is actively heating cool water, but when the heater turns off you know the water is ready. A second pot of coffee can be made immediately, as long as you have emptied the thermos.

Because the machine brews so quickly, there is no need for a "pause brew" feature. Because it brews into a thermos, there is no need for a plate warmer. Because this coffee pot is intended for coffee aficionados who appreciate fresh-ground beans, there is no clock or timer. Because there''s not a bunch of gizmos to flake out, this coffee pot does one thing and does it WELL. As such, Bunn offers a three-year warranty. Me likey.

It did take a pot or two of coffee to dial in the perfect flavor. Because it brews so quickly, my first pot of coffee, even though I used 10 heaping tablespoons of medium-grind whole bean coffee for a 10-cup brew, was relatively weak. I use a Kitchenaid burr coffee mill (another five-star review I should write) and I dialed my grind approximately one-tenth finer to compensate. My next pot, ten heaping tablespoons for ten cups, was slightly too strong, so on my third pot I reduced the amount of grounds. Perrrrrrrfect.

Every step up in machinery or technique will change the way your coffee tastes. It''s amazing what the difference is between the same beans, same batch, same grind, same amount, sent through my seven-year-old Krups drip machine as this Bunn. Similarly, it was a huge difference when I upgraded from my old Braun burr mill to the Kitchenaid coffee mill. If your first pot of coffee isn''t spot-on, I suggest that you adjust your mill settings or try upgrading your beans, ''cuz the problem does not reside with this pot.

3 Liter Digital Water Heater Save 20% Off

Many Asian households have this appliance but non-Asians seem to not know about it. This is a convenient way to always have boiling hot water at hand for making tea or instant ramen and instant soups. While the typical "American" electric tea kettle requires you to plug in and boil water each time it is turned on (thereby necessitating a wait of at least 3-5 minutes), this water heater boils water and keeps it boiling hot for days until you dispense all of it and have to refill/reboil it. I have found it very useful to have a personal water heater at my office desk (where it is the envy of all my colleagues yet somehow they are resistant to buying one themselves due to cultural suspicion), and also one at home. One caveat is that since it is constantly plugged in, it may use up a lot of electricity. Also you have to be careful of children accidentally dispensing it and scalding themselves (this model has a "lock" button). Lastly, you should never immerse the appliance in water and it is certainly not dishwashable. The Tiger model is not cheap but it is a high quality, well-made appliance that will last for years.

I got this one to replace a Tiger water heater I got over 16 years ago. That one has to be pumped manually. This one is much better since it pumps the water out automatically.

I like the 6-hr timer (only single setting, single push to activate) that shuts the heater down for six hours then restarts it. This save energy since my house is 50 degree at night and I don''t drink in these 6-hr time period. It also heats up the water before I get up. The 3-liter capacity is more than sufficient for my consumption rate of 1.2 L each time. My previous unit was 5-liter, which is too much to heat up.

The lid takes about 2 seconds to get use to. If you use the left hand to open it, you''d need to use your thumb to push down on the front-end which pivots the back end of the retangular latch upward, then use your pointing finger and/or the middle finger to lift the lid up. The lid is removeable for cleaning which is nice.

The insulation is quite good. I set the temperature at 208 deg F and my ambient temperature is 50 deg F constant so the water reheated about 3 hours each time for about 20 seconds. This is not bad at all. Even my bottled hot water heater reheat much often than this, about 20 minutes each time based on the same constant 50 deg F ambient temp.

I bought this unit after reading others'' review and they were pretty accurate. I enjoy my coffee at 208 deg F instead of either not hot enough (bottled hot water heater) or too hot using microwave oven.

This unit has a lazy susan which make it very easy to rotate. The negative this is that the power cord is held onto the unit by two rather weak magnets so if you rotate the unit too quick or to much ( greater than 60 degrees), the power cord can detach from the unit easily. Be careful when washing the unit. Read and follow the instruction and the warning label on the unit.

The bottom line: a strong recommendation to buy.

I was worried I''d not be able to replace this if mine ever quit on me so I just looked it up and so glad I will be able to get another one if mine ever dies. Ever so often, I put a cup or so of vinegar into the hot water (fill to the line), unplug it and let it set overnight to clean all the minerals from my water. The next morning, I just wipe with dish rag inside and then I rinse well and fill up again. This keeps any build-up from inside the kettle. I''m just thrilled I was able to find this online to order when I need one. I might even order one soon as a "back-up" just in case. Yes, it''s funny when my friends visit, they have never seen anything like this and act like it''s an "Asian" thing. Now I can tell them they can get one, too.

I have used Teledyne Water Pik and Pur faucet-mounted filters in the past. This filter is easy to install, and has a sturdy frame that connects securely to the faucet without leaks. It is aesthetically pleasing, although I am sure that other users may have different color preferences (another Dupont filter on the market offers different color cartridge covers in the same box). The electronic counter is unique, in that it displays gallons of water filtered, and doesn''t just indicate when it''s time to replace the filter. You have to be careful to connect the display module to the housing BEFORE you insert the water filter, otherwise it will not work correctly. If you unscrew the display after you have loaded the water filter cartridge, then you must remove the filter, screw on the display first, and then reinsert the water filter once again. The bottom line is that the water filter cartridge must be inserted after the display in order for the display to work properly. I also noticed that the counter actually measures the time the filter is in use, and indirectly calculates the gallons filtered by a predetermined formula. Therefore, if you have a low water pressure faucet like I do, the gallons that have been filtered will be overestimated. The display is not very clear if you are looking at it from an angle. The filtered water flows at a slow rate, but all filters have a slower filtered water rate, since the water must flow through the cartridge at a slow rate in order to have a good particle/chemical removal effect. The cartridge can be used to filter 200 gallons of water, and not just 100, like other filters on the market. It is therefore more economical than the competitors. Of course I have not performed any water testing to confirm that the filter remains efficacious for all those 200 gallons. That''s what the manufacturer claims. This is the only faucet-mounted filter on the market that is a 4-stage filter. It contains Microban, that supposedly prevents the accumulation of bacteria within the filter. If there is a feature I wish this system had, that would be an automatic switch back to unfiltered water that would prevent using the filter with hot water, something that can happen accidentally and destroy the filter (hot water destroys all activated carbon filters). I think that there are Culligan filters that have that automatic switch. This system is definitely worth it.

This is the 3rd brand I''ve tried in faucet-mounted water filters, and this DuPont system has been a great improvement over the other two. My previous systems had much more inclination to leak -even after replacing weak parts. I have come to much prefer these heads that remain horizontal rather than the ones that flip up to engage the filter. The ones that flip up seem to start leaking more quickly, and some leaks drip down the outside of the filter down to the faucet -not very sanitary. In this unit you engage the filter by rotating a switch. It is still easy to tell whether the faucet is in filter mode or regular flow mode, and after 3 months of use, I still have no hint of a leak. I am very pleased with this filter.

I''ve had many of the different brands of filters of this type. After having various difficulties with all of the other brands on the market, I''m glad to give this filter a five star rating. It installed easily, it has an amazingly accurate accounting of the amount of water filtered, and it has a four stage filter for the best filtering possible. I had hoped for as much from a corporation like DuPont which is certainly capable of creating this kind of product, but the proof is in the actual performance. So far, the performance is outstanding. The flow of water and the quality of the water are absolutely better than any other filter that I have tried.

I have run this set up for around 150 gallons now with great results. The back-lit display is very nice and provides a good estimate for the amount of water filtered. I have had no issues with filters rupturing and that issue could be due to high water pressure. The filter can be kind of slow sometimes but I think that''s up to pressure, most GOOD filters are slow. It''s nice not having to fill a pitcher every other glass and also the free space in the fridge. I am happy with this filter overall but only being able to find filters at China-Mart is upsetting.

Mind you I did not buy this product from Amazon but from Wal-Mart. My mother and I have used Teledyne Water-pik, Pur and I think my mother who is now in Ga is using Culligan. My family is originally from Miami and the water down there DID suck! I moved to Tampa and my mother to outside Atlanta, and we STILL had/have bad water coming from our faucets, mostly chlorine and other such unmentionables.

I remember I stood in Wal-Mart for at least 1/2 hour looking at all the selections.....I choose Dupont because 1) Waterpik and Pur weren''t very good products and 2) Dupont was famous in Miami and well known for their reputable products. My husband, who is originally from Minnesota from Scandinavian roots constantly complained about Tampa water and had insisted to buy SPRING bottled WATER, telling me that he is sensitive to the chlorine. Then a report came out that the SPRING water is actually filtered recycled water and it is getting more expensive for the bottled water! And did you know that the plastic bottles that the water is stored in when heated can cause cancer! Well, THAT was enough for me!

I told my husband I was investing in a filter system, just like my mother did years ago!

Best move I made....and he was amazed at the TASTE! He told me it was like spring water from the northen Minnesota lakes...Good!

It has been 6 weeks now and water still tastes great and no leaks! Dupont is the ticket!

DeLonghi DD50P 50 Pt. Energy Star Dehumidifier Save 29% Off

After four good years of service, my old Soleus Air CFM-40 40-Pint Dehumidifier with Humidistat (see my review of this model also) up and unexpectedly died on me. Searching for a replacement, I happened across this unit at a local store in Michigan. A bit larger than I really needed, but the extra capacity will come in handy when it is really humid outside. After 48 hours of use, I can tell you my experiences thus far:

Good:

* High power blower motor really moves the air around in my basement.

* The compressor is quiet when running.

* Digital display for outside unit air temp, compressor coil running temp and set humidity level in percentage.

* Programmable humidity level 30% to 80% in 5% increments and on continuously regardless of humidity.

* Timer function 24 hour run time is broken down as follows:

1) 0 to 10 hours -30 minute increments

2) 10 to 24 hours -1 hour increments

* 3 ways to collect and dispose of the water:

1) by holding tank -about 1.75 gallon with an internal handle that folds down inside the unit.

2) by larger diameter hose connection out the back gravity drain.

3) Small electric pump inside the dehumidifier to a 3/8" drain hose (included).

* When the holding tank is full, unit has an automatic shut-off feature so as not to overflow.

* Automatic defrost feature -starts working when the air temperature is below 59 degrees.

* CFC free this unit uses R410A, not the older R22 or what the Soleus used R134A (automotive refrigerant).

* Energy Star rated.

* 6 foot power cord.

* Over one 16 hour run @ 67degrees air temp, I pulled out 12 pints of water.

* Warranty 1 year parts & labor and 5 year parts only on the compressor and related components.

Bad:

* Blower has only two speeds low and high.

* Blower on high is loud and on low is only slightly quieter.

* Blower output is fixed straight up. You cannot redirect the output in another direction.

* Difficult to see water level on the holding tank w/o using a flash light.

* When the collection bucket is removed, excess water from the condenser continues to come out and onto the floor.

* This unit uses 675 watts/hour when operating on high (the Soleus used 400 watts/hour).

* Extended warranty is for 2 additional years @ $85.00 covering labor. That is just about 1/2 the price of a new one.

Others have complained that this unit runs hot. Having run this unit for 48 hours straight, in 67 degree ambient air temperature, I do not detect this at all. The housing is cool to the touch. The air discharge is cool. If your dehumidifier is running hot, have it repaired under warranty. I don''t see it with mine at all.

The display panel shows Relative Humidity (RH) when this dehumidifier is in operation. If you press the temperature button, this unit displays the ambient temperature in Fahrenheit degrees, then Celsius degrees. Left alone after that, the unit defaults back to ambient RH in percent format.

Setting the RH level, like 50%, this unit kicks the compressor in at 54% RH and off at 46% RH.

In all, for my use in my basement, which is 1,300 Sq. Ft., this unit fills the bill. Granted it is premature to say how long this unit will last. I didn''t expect the last to give out in just four years of seasonal use. If something happens, I will supplement this review accordingly. Thus far, I recommend this dehumidifier if you can handle the fan noise.

6/12/2011 Update -runs fine, except:

One problem has popped up. My dehumidifier and the plugged GFCI outlet do NOT play nice together. Over a matter of a few hours, the GFCI trips and the unit shuts down. When the GFCI is reset, it works fine again for a few more hours. The past two dehumidifier didn''t do this, so I wonder if there is a small internal short that is causing this problem.

I highly recommend using the built-in pump provision for emptying the holding tank. Running the hose to a near by drain, it is literately a "set and forget" operation. I check the tank from time-to-time, only a small amount of water remains in the bottom of the holding tank when in operation. My water dripping issue on the floor is gone. A much better option than using the drain pan that has to be emptied twice a day on humid days.

5/11/2012 Update

Just started my dehumidifier for the 2012 season a few days ago. Started up and works like a champ, even after sitting unused over the winter. The pump started up at the proper time to empty the holding bucket.

Season 2 is off to a good start. This dehumidifier is working just as it should.

We have used this dehumidifier for over a month to recover from a flooded basement. After removing the standing water, we were left with carpets and padding that were soaked thru, and humidity high enough to cause perspiration if you went down there. The unit was positioned in the TV room and I ran the long vinyl hose to the sink in the laundry room. The controls are easy, set it to pump, then set the desired humidity to --which essentially means the unit will run continuously. It took perhaps a week+ to drive the humidity below 50% given the extensive carpeting and the padding lying underneath. We did not move furniture or turn up the carpets so dehumidifying maybe took longer than it might of. But once the humidity dropped below 50% it went to 40% in another day and to 30% the day after that. We did not do bucket brigade because all the water was automatically pumped into the laundry sink. After leaving the unit off for a day the humidity in the basement crept back up to 50% or so, probably because the carpeting was still giving off moisture from underneath. So I would turn the unit on and in one day it would be back to 30% again. This was repeated a few times. The basement has now stabilized to its normal levels and things seem well. Mold has apparently not set in anywhere, and we don''t detect any obvious odors after 3 months. Reasonably fast, very effective, and easy to use gets the stars. Our single experience (running it day and night for 2 weeks and intermittently after) does not evaluate its durability. But we feel we''ve recovered the cost already, having essentially salvaged our basement property.

We purchased this unit for our relatively damp basement. The pump was the primary selling point as our last unit was gravity fed and had to be elevated off the ground in order to drain into the laundry tub. We''ve been running it for over a month with good results and the pump works well.

The other reviewer commented on how the unit heated up his/her basement, but this has not been our experience. Drier air simply feels warmer than damp air. I''d recommend this unit to anybody who wants a unit with a pump, otherwise a cheaper model would work just as well.

I have purchased this unit over a month ago, actually 2 of them and there perfect and really outperformed their clam. As a matter of fact, I''m going to purchase another. Trouble-free so far and I would recommend this unit to anyone as it has a built-in pump that removes the water upward if needed and I never have to worry about emptying the container as this unit has a hose (that comes with the unit) to travel into a cellar sub-pump system. We splurged on this in July 2010 and were thrilled with the design and functionality (pumping water, gravity not required). It was noisy and ran warm/hot, which though not ideal in the summer time, was acceptable. Until it stopped working in August. We got it to work again for brief periods of time but it would stop working within a day and was running really warm. Today is 9/30 and I''m shopping for a new dehumidifier. If you read the Costco site (where we purchased this unit) you''ll see the terrible experiences others have had. If it were possible to give something no stars, that''s what I''d give this one.
