Wolfgang Puck WPTPCM010 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker

I purchased this coffee maker for my nephew as a gift. It was on backorder, but I waited, because this was the specific coffeemaker that he wanted. I received the coffeemaker from Amazon on March 30, 2010 and gave it to him within a week of receiving it....Then the problems began.

From day one, the coffeemaker was spewing coffee all over the counter, instead of into the carafe. He didn''t want to involve me in the problems with the coffeemaker, so he called the Wolfgang Puck (WP) Customer Service...Big Mistake! Had he let me know, I could have shipped it back to Amazon, received my money and he could have purchased any other brand he wanted. However, it didn''t work that way.

After numerous attempts to "fix" the problem over the phone, the WP Company sent a pick-up order for the coffee maker and received it on May 3, 2010. Since that time, he has been repeatedly told he would have a new machine in "2 weeks".

I became involved in July, when he was getting nowhere with the company. I requested a refund on July 19, and I was told it had to be approved by corporate headquarters. A week later, I was told the request was denied, because they still have the coffee pots... (Well, where are they?)!! I then asked for the name of a contact person at the corporate office and they refused to supply me with a name.

Through lots of trials, errors, and frustration, I found a number. I called it and believe it or not, I finally made contact with a customer relations manager. I talked with her and I finally agreed to wait another "2 weeks". The time came and went and no coffee maker, so I called and she said the company had just received them and would be shipping his coffeemaker as the first shipment. And....as a thank-you, he would also receive a complimentary gift set of WP Kitchen knives. I waited until September 16 and ended up calling her again. The manager then checked and found out that the coffeemaker had NOT been shipped, because the coffeemakers were bent and damaged in the shipment.

I received an email later that afternoon, stating that she has requested a refund for me. It''s not here yet, but I have much hope that my money will be refunded.

Update: This note is being added about 6 months after my inital review. We too have experienced the problem with coffee overflowing on to the countertop. I very quickly learned that is after inserting the pot into the maker I pivot the pot so that the handle is as far left as possible, the spillage does not happen. This method has been successful for the past 200 pots made. It''s a weird quirk that shouldn''t be necessary, but I otherwise stand by my review.

The best coffeemaker we have ever owned is a long since discontinued Starbucks Barista with a thermal carafe. It was close to perfection for almost 10 years. Even after some trim pieces fell off, it continued to be a reliable performer. After several years of regular use, the plate on the bottom of the carafe top began to break, one piece at a time. The Barista continued to make great coffee, it just didn''t hold the temperature as well as it originally did.

Earlier this year we despaired that we would have to go back to buying makers that work for a few months and then die. My wife, after hours of searching spotted this familiar face in the crowd. We ordered in December and it arrived today. To say it was worth the wait is an understatement. We now know that we have years of fresh, hot, reliable coffee making ahead of us. The only difference between this model and the original Starbucks is the it now uses a cone filter instead of a flat bottom. No big deal at all.

Footnote: "Old Reliable" the Starbucks Barista worked right through this morning, its retirement day. It''s not headed for the trash however, there spare parts to be salved for our beautiful new baby.

Unfortunately we didn''t read the reviews before ordering this coffee maker. We had it boxed and ready to ship back when I popped on to see if anyone else was having the flooding issue. That is when I discovered that EVERYONE was having the overflow issue. My brilliant husband Robert unpacked the coffee maker and promptly went out to his shop area and cut a disc the diameter of the bottom of the coffee carafe from a piece of 1/4" masonite. Problem solved!! The spring on the top of the carafe doesn''t get depressed far enough to allow the coffee to flow into the pot properly. Putting that 1/4" spacer under the carafe is all it needed. We are happy, we love the way the coffee maker makes and keeps coffee. Robert also painted the disc black once he knew it was going to work. It looks like it belongs to the unit.

We''ve had more coffee on the floor than in the pot since getting this coffee maker. Coffee''s good, but you have to hold your mug under the lip of the counter top and let the coffee drip into it from there. It takes a long time to get a cup of coffee that way. The worst part of all of this? The company won''t respond. No response to emails. Can''t get through on the phone (although while on hold you can refill your cup using the above described method).

Bottom line: Don''t buy it unless you have a lot of towels close by.

Sadly, this review may be too late to save this great product. I really don''t understand the negative reviews on this unit, though it is not a traditional "Mr Coffee" type unit, it''s also not so complicated that my Rocket Science degree is required to use it. My husband and I may be lucky, but I can''t imagine a better performing coffee maker! We''ve now had the Wolfgang Puck coffee maker for most of 2011 and find it makes excellent coffee, is very reliable, brew excellent coffee (better than Starbucks!), and continues to feel like it''s very well made. We purchased this coffee maker after our Starbucks Barista Grande stopped working after over 6 years of honored service. It was the ONLY coffee maker that has a removable water reservoir, stainless steel carafe that stays hot for hours, a convenient filter basket, and makes a 12 great cups of coffee in approximately 12 minutes. For the most part all parts of this unit that "touch" coffee are dishwasher safe--at least they''ve survived so far and still work as well as when they were new!

We have learned some "Tricks" that may have "increased our luck"--these are the same tricks we had learned with our Starbucks version. We''ll continue to use these tricks on all future coffee makers, because they''re just good practices.

1. Don''t fill the reservoir beyond the "max fill" line that is CLEARLY marked on the vessel. The holes in the container used to secure the reservoir handle are located just above the max fill water-line and not water tight and will leak water if you overfill;

2. The carafe lid does collect coffee grounds (especially if you use the reusable filter that comes with the unit). Once the lid contains enough coffee grounds, it can leak and spill coffee during the brewing process--no matter how carefully it is placed on the carafe. To prevent this leakage, rinse the lid before each use in very warm water (hotter water seems to clear it faster); ensure you press the central valve and the serving valve to release the trapped grounds.

3. Rinse the filter and filter basket and carafe and run it through the dishwasher regularly--I''ve noticed improved flavor when these pieces are kept really clean. It''s also possible leakage is caused with the filter basket valve becomes covered in coffee oils, so keeping it clean could make it perform better.

--I also rinse and fill the carafe with hot water and let it sit for a few minutes while you clean the filter basket and its lid and fill the water reservoir--before I dump out the water, I''ll twist on the lid and pour additional hot water out of it, just for good measure. Then, when everything is ready (e.g. the freshly ground coffee beans are in-place and the filter/basket is closed and ready for the carafe and the water reservoir is adequately filled.)

4. The carafe is always the last component to be positioned--that''s the intended use for this unit, the filter basked isn''t supposed to be opened once the carafe is in-place. The valve spring on the filter basket is ONLY engaged once the carafe is properly place beneath it, so the basket should be in-place BEFORE the carafe is put in to place.

To my extreme surprise, the water filters remove nothing from the water, the contaminent levels are equal with the tap water in each of my two houses!!! I ran gallons of water through the filters and the readings never went down. So I called GE, customer service informed me there was a small chance I could have received 2 defective filters, and I should try to return them to Amazon. I tested the HM water meter on bottled water that is supposed to be very pure, and it was. Arrowhead water is at a "marginally safe tap water" level. My neighbor''s reverse osmosis worked well. (I highly recommend everyone get a water meter...especially if you are putting any kind of trust in these GE filters!).

That''s what attracted me to it, because the air gets so dry in winter in my office I can put this close to me while I am working. I could feel a difference when it was on in a small space. I suffer from dry sore eyes as well as dry skin during the winter as a result of dry heated air. Although I have a whole house humidifier, my eyes still become dry and sore during the night. This little humidifier provides just the additional moisture needed next to my bed at night to prevent my eye problem. It is totally silent in operation and in spite of an advertised 4 hour run time, my experience has been that it runs 8-9 hours if I start with it a bit above the fill line (almost to the top of the fill cup). I use distilled water which I would recommend to avoid scale problems and greatly prolong filter life. Also, with distilled water, no additives are needed. You can purchase distilled water in most grocery stores and since it uses so little, the humidifier will be economical to run. But if you use a de-humidifier in the summer, you can bottle some of its recovered water and get distilled water for free. This is a great product as long as you don''t expect it to humidify a large area. But for a small boost in humidity in a bedroom or office it does a remarkable job for a low price.

I purchased this at a retail store to use in my office. The first time I used it, the reservoir emptied in 2.5 hours. The second and third times it emptied in about 2 hours. Notice the "Micron Rating." This filter does a better job than MANY reverse osmosis systems!!! .5 micron rating is ridiculously small and will astound you with how much better your coffee, icecubes, cooking water, etc. will taste. You WILL notice a drop off in your water pressure at the sink tap when you use it. I consider that to be an engineering limitation and easy to live with. When you use the hot water you''ll still have all the pressure you need.

BTW, take your time when installing it. I know, if you''ve got a cramped under sink area it can get pretty claustrophobic under there. Well, suck it up, buttercup, and do it right the first time. Otherwise, you''ll be under there SEVERAL times trying to get it right. Having an attentive helper to hand you tools, etc. will definitely be a big help for you so you won''t have to slither in and out of there to get it done.

They were each inside a plastic bag that was not sealed (just twisted closed), inside boxes that were open. They were packaged inside the taped Amazon box, so it seems that they arrived from the Amazon warehouse this way. Since these are NOt factory sealed, I have no confidence that these are genuine, unused and/or safe to use. I am returning them for a refund and will go to Lowes to purchace them instead. The model number is correct, but it does not work properly. Starts to, but then triggers the alarm. Poor quality. We were pleased when we asked to return it and the comapny said they would send a replacement. Upon installing the replacement we realized it was the lamp and its poor quality. I bought this register-insert humidifier after three ionic, sonic, and otherwise high-tech humidifiers had failed in three years. This one snaps into the register space in place of the normal grate. A simple filter sits in a reservoir (nest to the air channel) and can be filled with water in winter, or left alone in summer. The amount of humidification was not as high as a programmable, humidistatic unit, (the humidity rose perhaps 10%) but it was enough to take the edge off the dryness in my upstairs office. I would fill it once a day when it was semi-cold (32 F) outside, and 2 or 3 times when it was 10 F. I think it holds about a pint at a time. I would recommend something more heavy duty for a bedroom in a cold, dry climate as this is. On the other hand, this is one unit that Will Not Break Ever, unless you stand over the register and jump on the (plastic) great, or set heavy items on it. Nor do you need to decalcify it, and you could buy just about any flat soft humidifier filter and but pieces from it. A kitchen sponge has worked too. Highly recommended for home office. Silent, too.

I use this in my son''s room which is 10x10. It does add humidity to the room overnight. It''s possible that it does restrict airflow from the vent, but it''s minor. Plastic is very flexible if stepped upon. This is good because it sticks up higher than a traditional vent cover. It must be refilled daily or more. Much cheaper option that a traditional humidifier. I would only recommend for small rooms. It might not raise humidity in large rooms significantly. Very happy with purchase.

This press is great! I just broke my Bodum Chambard, which is glass, after five years of use. I had the 32 oz., which was far larger than necessity dictated. Moreover, glass presses undergo considerable heat loss after four minutes of steeping. This press not only remedies that problem since it is double walled stainless steel, but you couldn''t break it if you tried. The purchase was simple and efficient, taking about a week to arrive with free shipping. Using two scoops of coarsely ground decaffeinated coffee, boiling water, and--important--I stirred the brew before affixing the top with the plunger up. I let the brew steep about two minutes, pushed the plunger down easily, poured, and was immediately satisfied with my purchase, even though a little pricey. The stainless steel filter and smooth-finished inside walls of the container created a great seal on the plunger, without any blow-back. Clean-up under the faucet was simple. I''ve had lots of french presses, but this one is just great, having broken the glass container on my last one (again!) it was time for me to look for a new one, and how great is it!

The mesh looks like the standard Bodums, and the lid contains a plastic lip that can close the pouring orifice to keep the heat in (by twisting the cover till the arrow points to the exit)!

This is for the most part a great filter. Too bad the fitting that goes on the faucet does not have enough thread depth to stay firmly on my faucet. I took the gasket out and then put duct tape all around. It works with just a few leaks. I keep adding more duct tape so the problem is improving. Probably most people don''t want to have to do this! I may get to the hardware store to find out if a thinner gasket is available.

We bought one of these for our home and liked it so much I got another for my office. It is a quick safe way to boil water. It works much better than our teapot on our conventional stove and you can leave the room without worry about all the water boiling out and a possible fire.

It is so efficient that we often use it to heat up water before putting it in a pan on the stove. It is much faster. When we are making pasta we will put a small amount of water in a large pan and fill the teapot. The water in the pot is boiling before the water on the stove. The pot is light, even when full, and has no aftertaste like I have read some of the plastic ones do.

HOWEVER, we had owned our home pot for less than six months when the ''on'' switch broke off. The pot was still usable, but you have to reach in and activate it with a fingernail. It was under limited warranty, but that involved mailing it to San Diego at our own cost and sending them a check for $8 to have it returned. Including the time and materials to package it up and then drive to the post office and have it gone for 2-4 weeks wasn''t worth the effort.

I have concluded we just got a lemon. Because this happened and the warranty policy was so cumbersome, I originally gave this 3 stars. But our other one is working fine and the broken piece has turned out to be a small inconvenience, so I have revised my rating to 4.6, rounding up to 5.

It''s not often that one finds a product that''s both visually attractive AND functionally satisfying. This kettle is one of those rare items: the shiny stainless steel body is beautiful to look at, and it boils water very very quickly! It features a nice big and sturdy handle which is very comfortable, and the spout is perfectly designed so that you''d have to be a real klutz to spill things. The cordless feature is wonderful, I tried a cheap ten dollar "Hot Pot" for a day or two and hated having to deal with the cord, plus that model doesn''t have automatic shutoff despite what it says on the box---huge fire hazard! There is also a power-indicator light and water-level indicator gauge which are both handy, and I like that there is no exposed heating element inside which would be a pain to clean. Instead it''s all smooth clean lines, inside and out!

Sure the outside of the kettle does get a little hot so you probably don''t want to have this within reach of toddlers or anything, but if your toddlers can get up on your kitchen countertop then you have a LOT of other problems as well! I appreciated not having to deal with how plastic inevitably gets dirty-looking and sometimes leaves a funny taste in the water.

My only slight concern is that the lid needs a little bit of force to shut completely...probably some kind of insulating seal that shortens the time needed to bring water to a boil, but makes me wonder how durable that part of this kettle is going to be. Oh well, will find out in a few months or (hopefully) years, I suppose!

*UPDATED 2/14/2011: Still going strong, no complaints at all. I use it at least twice a day, most days. The lid has held up well. Highly recommend!

The boil time is very fast and there is no coil on the inside so I do not have to worry about the build-up or rust I have experienced with other kettles. The water tastes good and clean. For this price it is very affordable! I do have to admit that the pot seems a little cheaply made, but I didn''t expect much since it seems to be less than half the price of others of the same volume and style. I am very happy with this!!

I bought it last month and used it over one month now. Heat quickly, looks good on the counter, easy to use and cheap.

The big problem for me is it failed to shut itself off about 10% of times, with the lid closed completely, even minutes after water boiled and the plastic handle became too hot to hold. I have to stay nearby when I using it, otherwise it could be dangerous. I contacted Aroma service people today, they told me that I can send back to repair, but I need to pay the shipping cost by myself. For a 30 dollar stuff, it is not worth it. Kind of disappointed.

New update in 1/12/2012.

I use it over two years now, almost every day. I feel good about this product now. It did fail to shut itself off around 10% of times in the first month. But it is OK after that. I guess it maybe caused by the built up water stain near the edge of cover. It made the cover close tighter to trigger the detector. I change the rate to 4 stars from 1 star. Feel surprised that this kettle last pretty long.

Whether for tea or or hot oatmeal, this water kettle has performed perfectly. Before I purchased this I tended to use the microwave to heat water. Can''t believe what a waste of time and energy that was, not to mention possibly unhealthy. This kettle is even faster than your stove top.

The interior is about 98% metal except for a very tiny amount of plastic. I didn''t taste anything bad regardless and my sense of smell/taste is fairly strong.

My only concern is that the instructions clearly say to unplug the kettle when not in use. There''s an auto shut-off after the water is boiled so either the manufacturer is being extra extra cautious or they believe there could be a problem. Would prefer to just leave it plugged in and not worry about it, but I follow the directions.

I had earlier posted the review that this doesnt seem to be doing anything, but I left it on. Interestingly while it took its time this thing does seem to be doing exactlt what it says it will do namely making the hardness in water "non-sticky". My shower heads look quite a bit cleaner, and yes we are noticing small while precipitate in the water, showing that the long deposited white ''scaling'' on boiler and pipes is actually coming off.

This seems to also have had a very positive effect on the dish washer. I dont get the whole scaling on glass anymore.

So if you have tested your water and its hardness is in the range for this device (mine qualifies) I will now very strongly recommend this to you. Its a peach to install and setup, and provided you have the patience to wait for its effects which can take a few months to show up this is great.

The Background

Same goes for Soft Water, read about it elsewhere for details. If you are interested in my experience with the Clearwave, read on!

So I had a Culligan water softener in my old house and although we paid way too much for it, I loved the soft water, no more hard water to deal with.

Then we moved and decided not to take the softener with us so I got a water boss from Lowes and installed it myself. Again a happy camper for 4 years, then the water pressure started dropping due to gunk coming through the system and blocking all the aerators in the taps and showers. A quick checked proved that it was the softener by bypassing the unit, and a call to water boss confirmed I would need to either replace the unit or have it repaired. This was just before Christmas and funds were low so we did without soft water for a while. Now I shave my head which is actually my benchmark. Hard water makes it very difficult, I nick my skin and it takes me a lot longer to do. Soft water by comparison makes it quick and easy. After a month of hard water showers I was getting itchy to replace the softener, but still had no money.

Then we went to visit my parents in Spain.... They live in a small village and last time I visited they had hard water. But imagine my surprise when I jumped in the shower and noticed right away that the water was soft. I mentioned it to my Dad and he immediately confirmed that a friend had recommended an electronic softener, it was relatively inexpensive and although skeptical he gave it a go. He has had it for quite some time and all the hard water deposits that had built up had gone away so he was happy. Now I have seen these before but must have drunk too much Culligan cool-Aid when I was sold my original unit, I mean how can something like this work? So I had ignored it, but here was evidence! Dad''s unit was not a clearwave, but hey the US was bound to have something.

The Clearwave

On getting home to California I checked on the internet and there is a huge variety out there with big price differences. Then up popped the Clearwave that was similar in price to Dad''s unit and seemed to have the same function, and given the price it seemed worth the risk. Ordering was easy as it always is at Amazon and it arrived promptly and I was excited to get it going.

Unfortunately the builder for our home piped the water in to the opposite side of the house from the boiler, so if I was going to mount it in the boiler room area out of the elements I would only get soft hot water. I had already done some custom plumbing to put my salt based softener outside the house where the mains entered and now this caused me a problem because ideally you need room on the pipes to mount the device and my pipe work was full of valves and bends I was doubly challenged because I had to protect it from the elements. To cut a long story short I ended up doing some re piping to remove the bypass valves for the old unit and add in some straigh piping. Also until I can build a wooden box to cover the pipes I went to Lowes and got myself a small plastic storage box which with a few cuts slipped over the pipe work easily enough and allowed me to mount the Clearwave inside it and close the lid. Interestingly enough I ended up wrapping the coils around a bend in the pipe and although I was worried this would affect the performance, it does not seem to.

End result, I can see the red led''s pulsing inside my plastic box and sure enough it has become much easier to shave my head again. So all in all this does what it says it will, does not add salt to the wate, and at just over $100 it costs way less that a traditional softener right out of the gate. The Clearwave is easy to install, though it will depend on your house plumbing and may need some prep work, once I had everything in place it took me about 30 mins, and that was only because of the plastic box getting the the way. If it was inside my boiler room it would have taken no more than 10 mins. My plastic box solution has already stood up to heavy rains and while it is not exactly pretty it gets the job done. The unit itself appears well built, it feels a little but lightweight but then its just an electronic gizmo so that''s to be expected.

This solution to me is a minor miracle, go buy one!

I was enticed by the decent reviews of this product. After a few weeks of my own research, I decided to buy one myself and keep my fingers crossed that it would work. My main concern regarding the water in my house is the calcium buildup, which this product claims to treat/prevent. The product manual also claims that if you are unsatisfied with this product for any reason that you can return it to the place of purchase within 90 days. I will address this problem later...

A little background. This water conditioner claims that it will not only prevent buildup, but actually reverse the effects of existing calcuim buildup. This product was installed in a brand new house with a brand new electric water heater. I had my water tested and the grains of calcium were 23 (this product claims to work by itself up to 25). I gave the product 2 months before I attempted to return it. Over those two months, I determined the product to be a scam. Calcium built up on my shower heads, clogging them, around the sink drains, in my new dishwasher, and in my toilets. My old house is located in the same water district as my new house, so I went into this knowing the effects the untreated water has on fixtures. With this knowledge, I though the Clearwave water conditioner would, at the very least, slow down the buildup of calcium...but it didn''t.

So, still well within my 90 return window guaranteed by the manufacturer, I contacted amazon and requested a return. They stated I needed to contact the company that fulfilled my order (Smarthome.com) and request a refund through them. I contacted Smarthome.com and they stated the order was actually fulfilled through Amazon. So back to Amazon I went. Amazon then stated their return policy was 30 days and they would only offer me 50% of my money back for this product. Arguing with them got me nowhere, so now I am stuck with this worthless piece of junk.

This is my first review and I typically prefer to read others reports than to write my own but I felt compelled to provide some feedback.

I really wanted this product to work as I do not like having to use a traditional water softener. Once our existing salt based water softener broke I decided to try the Clearwave and see if my wife could tell the difference. I did not tell her about the change and this was truly going to be blind field test. After a couple of weeks my wife asked if there was anything wrong with our softener as she had begun to notice some typical hard water build up. I had to fess up to the change and asked her to give it a few more weeks. I waited the full 90 days but it was clear that the Clearwave did not do the job as well as a traditional water softener. It appeared to not make any difference at all. The hard water stains were readily apparent in the shower and near the sink.

I will very reluctantly go back to a salt based system until some better comes along to replace it.
