At no charge, the manufacturer sent a replacement cover to correct the broken rivet. The customer service was good. They suggested bending the wheel into place to straighten the Now, however, 17 months after purchase, the electric power nozzle does not turn on. This follows on several weeks of the nozzle turning on and off intermittently. Now I wish I had purchased the vacuum from a physical store with a buyer protection program. My new strategy is to buy cheap vacuums on a buyer protection plan and get the broken parts replaced. This was way too expensive for the grief.

ORIGINAL: I bought this because I was tired of the expensive, plastic vacuums falling apart within the first year of use. While this vacuum is incredibly powerful (indeed it sucks the area rugs right off the floor) it''s not the indestructible stainless steel canister vacuum of my childhood. Within the first 4 months a rivet broke loose from the canister, making it impossible to close the vacuum. I tape it shut for use now. One wheel drags as well, leaving long black scuff marks on my white floors. I''m underwhelmed, but perhaps the manufacturer will make good on the warranty.

I bought this vacuum for a few reasons:

1) All the brand name vacuums listed on consumer reports have user reviews that said the vacuums were not that good

2) the user reviews for this vacuum were much higher, albeit fewer people, but I looked at both models too.

3) The reviews of this vacuum made it sound like it was amazing

I am truly wondering if the previous reviewers all worked for the company.

While I will say this IS a good vacuum, it does not live up to the hype and quite frankly lacks some key modern features or has some poor quality aspects

1) The cord just hangs out there with no place to go. You can wrap it around the body but that is a pain in the @$$.

2) The spare attachments hang onto a flimsy plastic carrier that poorly snaps onto the vacuum tube/pole

3) the long pole attachment (not the set that goes to the power nozzle but the other long one for the non powered attachments) does not clip. As you are vacuuming the pole will frequently fall off onto the floor.

4) The documentation / instructions for this vacuum are very poor at best. All you basically get is a poor quality single sheet of paper with very vague instructions. When you unwrap the vacuum, you have 4 poles and it takes a while to figure out why 4 (2 for the power nozzle and 2 for non power). No help from the directions. All it says is to attach the poles. You also are left wondering about the bag and filter insertion. there is absolutely nothing about proper installation.

5) You have two power buttons. One on the main body of the vacuum and one for the power nozzle. When using the power nozzle this design makes no sense at all. You have to turn the body power on, and then you have to turn the power nozzle power on. When you shut the power nozzle off, the vacuum is still running and still needs to be shut off. The button on the body is a toggle switch. Low to the left, Off in the middle, and High to the right. It takes some getting used to when trying to switch it off to not go completely from low-high (or high-low) instead of stopping in the middle.

The vacuum has very good suction, but it certainly won''t suck the chrome off a trailer hitch. :-)

I almost wanted to give another minus 1 star for not living up to the hype.

I am not totally disappointed with the vacuum. It basically works fine. And I am not sure how happy I would be with the brand name vacuums with so many real people rating them low. I might still buy this vacuum if I did it again. But my expectations would be much lower.

UPDATE 12/27/2009: OK its been 3 months and I would change the stars to 0. My wife says she clearly hates this vacuum and I have to agree it is a pain in the @$$ to use. It works as a vacuum just fine but how you use it is such a pain it makes the thought of going around and picking up each piece of dirt by hand sound more attractive. Clearly previous reviewers had to be employees of the company and were forced to leave positive comments.

We just opened the box. It took all of 5 minutes to put it together. First thing I checked was the suction. It was great. Two negatives, no auto cord recoil and the exhaust is loud. It is well built, glides nicely along the floor, comes with all the accessories, including two extra chrome metal wands, has a powerful rug beater and the bare floor nozzle has great bristles. It is light weight so it is easy to carry up the stairs and makes it OK to clean the stairs, although I wish the hose was longer. We have had all types of vacuums, Oreck upright, sharp canister, Hoover canister, shop vacs, etc. After all is said and done, when you get right down to it, you have to use a canister vac if you want to really clean. It allows you to get the dirt and dust in those hard to reach places and an upright is simply not going to cut it. We looked at all the vacs, Electrolux, Dyson, Eureka, Kenmore, Bla, Bla, Bla, Ba Bla. Based on price, performance, ease of use, durability and good old SUCTION!, this Metro is the sucker of all house vacs, bar none. It has a toggle switch for low and high suction and the power head is well made. My wife just made a comment that it is LOUD, but man it really feels like the house is clean!! Go for it!!!

The classic look of the Metro was what caught my eye, and then I was seduced by the horsepower and the fact that this machine is made in the USA. I have long said that if some American company really wanted to reclaim its market from China, all they needed to do was go back to building a vacuum cleaner that is built to last, rather than disposable. In fact, if the US were serious about helping the environment, Congress should pass legislation against the planned obsolescence that is the guiding principle of the vacuum cleaner industry.

But I digress. What came out of the box was, well, a canister. Steel, with chrome-plated ends--not as pretty as pictured; quite utilitarian-looking and mostly reminiscent of a tin can. There was a nice, sturdy-looking hose, quality steel wands, and one very cheesy, probably Chinese, powerhead. Oh, and some equally cheesy small attachments: an undersized upholstery attachment, crevice tool, and dust brush.

The steel is a unique look, and the body and wheels seemed sturdy. The switch is indeed a plain metal three-position toggle. The cord wraps around a "halo" of metal at the rear end. One disturbing feature is that the hose is secured by metal pushbuttons into the bag compartment. This means that in order to remove the hose (say, to clear a clog or use as a blower), you have to remove the bag lid. I was afraid to push the hose into the exhaust opening (which would be necessary to clear a clog or use as a blower) for fear that the pushbuttons would make it impossible to remove. The "instructions" consist of a single sheet of Xeroxed paper containing very little useful information. Bags are hard to find; the ones offered here on Amazon are NOT the right ones for this machine, and I ordered more by calling the manufacturer, since their website was essentially useless.

This is not what I''d expect from a machine at this price point, but for "Made in USA" and power I put it to work, and power it does deliver--though with some tradeoffs. The canister, for its plain looks, works well, but as previous reviewers noted, it does get very hot during use. It BLASTS air out the back end--which my kids found fun, but which meant that I had to hold it pointing upward so as to avoid blowing dust across the hard floors I was vacuuming. The power was substantial enough to actually USE one of the turbo-brush stair tools that were absolutely useless with the Bissell machines they came with. Noise was significant, but not awful--much of it the sound of that rushing exhaust. There was some odor of burning rubber, maybe from the powerhead, and several kids complained that the exhaust stunk.

Moreover, the powerhead rattled. And when I opened it up to find out why (a nasty process involving two sizes of screwdrivers), I saw that a part was broken during manufacture--not surprising, because this powerhead is made of extremely cheap components which can''t withstand the stress of being screwed into place. Worse still, I noted that I was going to have to screw and unscrew this cheap plastic each time a change of belt was required. Replacement powerheads are a hundred dollars from the manufacturer--and probably worth about five. (For the record, I noticed this same chintzy powerhead with a Royal canister vac in the store, albeit with some cosmetic changes.)

So, mine''s on its way back to Amazon, and I''ve sprung for an even more expensive, German machine that will (hopefully) last awhile.

Rive 12-Ounce Hour Glass Bottle

After using 4 of these water bottles for 2 months, I finally put them in the recycling bin last week. I liked the size (12 oz), the shape of the bottle, and the silicon slipcase, but the caps were HORRIBLE. One of the 4 leaked immediately and another started to leak in a few weeks. Worse, no matter what I did, drinking from these caps was like drinking from a dribble glass. Small amounts of liquid would puddle on the top and dribble with the next sip. Finally, even though I followed instructions and washed both the bottles and caps by hand after each use, after about 6 weeks, all of the caps became very difficult to twist open/close for drinking.

I really want to use glass bottles for some things, like juice, but this Rive Elan design just doesn''t cut it. For now, I''ll stick with my trust-worthy stainless steel Klean Kanteen bottles for everything and continue the glass water bottle search.

Why is it so hard to make a reuseable bottle that doesn''t leak? This bottle is a nice size and shape that fits my hand. I loved it the first week, then it started to leak. It leaked a little the second week but by the third week it was a full 2-3 tablespoons of water at each drink. Every time I took a drink it leaked when I tipped the bottle up and the water ran through the gasket on the cap. The caps are the problem. They are thin, cheap, plastic and do not hold up to even minimal use. I also have a 16oz Rive bottle and after one week of use that one leaked too. I had only hand washed them so it wasn''t a dishwasher problem.

Moved to a place with the worst water I have seen. Unbelievable iron levels that literally turns yellow within a minute of coming out of the tap. This is good on toilets when they get stained with rust but was less effective on clothes that suffered the same fate. Didnt make them white again but a light yellow. This stuff is pretty nasty if you inhale any dust and there should be better warning labels to indicate this. I can imagine that someone will get seriously hurt with this product.

Breville BKE820XL Variable-Temperature 1.8-Liter Kettle Save 36% Off

I am relatively new to the tea scene (my wife and I started drinking Teavana teas about a year ago) and as such I have been searching for a really good kettle. I wanted an electric kettle because of their ease of use as well as the extra features some of the nicer kettles offer. After an exhaustive search I decided upon the Breville SK500XL Ikon Stainless-Steel Electric Kettle based in no small part to the excellent reviews it has received on Amazon and other sites.

I went to a few stores to examine it in person and compare it to about ten other electric kettles that the different stores carried but nothing seemed to come close to the design and quality of the Breville. So after finally making my decision, it was simply a matter of time before I made my purchase. I am very glad I waited as within 2 weeks this new Breville kettle was released. While still substantially costlier than the SK500XL, the BKE820XL has a number of features and design improvements that made the extra cost more than worth it. These include:

Multiple temperature settings (different teas require different temperature water for an optimally brew) with 20 minute hold

Improved water level indicators now on both sides (the single water level indicator on the SK500XL is behind the handle which makes it hard to read)

I''ve only had my BKE820XL a few days (I purchased it from a local store) so I cannot speak to its long term reliability yet, if it is anything like the SK500XL, I don''t expect to have any problems.

Oh yeah, and the tea I''ve made in the last few days is easily the best I''ve ever brewed! Yay!

UPDATE 1/2/2009: I''ve had the BKE820XL for over a month now and I still love it! The only thing I''ve found that I would critique is:

After you are done boiling water for the day, you need to either dry out the lid by hand or leave the lid open for a few hours to let the water evaporate (from the lid where it collects). I am concerned that not doing this might lead to issues down the road.

Even with that, I am still overjoyed with my purchase (which I use at least 5 times a week) and highly recommend it to anyone in search of a quality electric kettle.

UPDATE 3/12/2009 Nothing much to report except that my wife and I are continuing to use our kettle mutliple times a week and are extremely happy with it. It has a permanent place on our counter! :)

UPDATE 09/26/2010 Just wanted to pop on and provide a quick update. We have had this kettle almost 2 years now and have yet to have any issues with it (fingers crossed). We have used it at least once a week (if not a lot more) pretty much without fail and are still very happy with it. At this point if something were to go wrong with it, we wouldn''t hesitate to purchase another one. Highly recommended. :)

UPDATE 09/30/2010 A commenter chastised me a bit for not mentioning the BPA controversy in my review. As I mentioned in my reply to her, I would caution everyone to be sure to read the actual scientific papers or publications that are as unbiased as possible. I find a great source for all things scientific to be Arstechnica.com. They have a great way of breaking down complex topics in ways that non-scientific types (like myself) can really understand and absorb (see this BPA article as an example: ).

If you don''t want to wait for a conclusive link between BPA and health issues (of which there has not been one to date that I am aware of), I can completely understand and sympathize. If I had an infant I would definitely be doing all I could to minimize their BPA intake. Still, with that said I would ask that anyone concerned by this or other health issues please try to represent the facts in your arguments and not the hype; this allows others to make their own, informed decisions as well.

UPDATE 09/04/2011 We''ve had our Breville almost three years now and have yet to have any problems with it. Most of the negative reviews seem to be in regard to the potential BPA issue which I''ve already posted my opinion on (both above & in the comments to this review) however a few have mentioned actual mechanical issues. Perhaps they use theirs more than we do (we use ours at most once per day but probably more realistically about 3 to 4 times a week on average) or maybe they just received a lemon (or perhaps ours is the exception, I couldn''t really tell you). I have noticed recently that the lid sometimes stays shut while the water is still hot; I don''t know if it has always done this and I never noticed before or if it has recently started to do this, either way I look at it as a design element (to help keep me from spilling hot water on myself) but perhaps it is a design flaw? Regardless all I do is tap on the lid once or twice while pushing the button and it opens right up. Other than that it works just as well as the day we bought it (I still don''t have a decent thermometer so I couldn''t tell you how accurate it was new or used but the water still seems as hot...for whatever that is worth).

UPDATE 04/09/2012 Well I am sad to report that, after almost 4 years of service, our Breville appears to be on its last legs. Over the last few months we''ve started to notice some faulty behavior that I suspect is indicative of our unit''s impending death. Here are the issues that have started to plague our kettle:

Kettle does not shut off at the proper temperature: this is happening more and more we mostly use our kettle for coffee these days and I use the second highest setting (195 degrees) for our Chemex. The issue is the kettle doesn''t always shut off at 195 degrees but will go to a full boil instead. I do not know if it would eventually shut itself off or if this is a true safety issue as I''ve always notice the issue right away. This is not a huge issue (provided the safety shutoff is still working, which is unknown) as much as an inconvience but it does not bode well for the kettle''s future.

For the first time this morning, the Breville shutoff prematurely. I turned the kettle on, set my temperature and the temperature hold and walked away. When I returned (less than 5 minutes later), the kettle had shut off and the water was nowhere close to the 195 degree that it was set to. I was unable to get the kettle to heat up the water to the 195 degree setting as it would (by the sound of it) start to heat up but then before the water was hot enough, it would shut off. The water never got to the correct temperature and the kettle never shut off. It seemed stuck in a repeating cycle. I eventually set the kettle to its highest setting (205 degrees) and the kettle started working again.

To me these issues seem to indicate that the kettle is having issues with its electronics and not with the actual heating unit itself (but obviously this is purely speculation on my part based on my anecdotal evidence). Being that this is the only "high end" kettle we''ve owned, I don''t know if 3+ years is a normal or acceptable lifespan for a tool such as this. I know it only comes with a 1 year warranty but for the price, I had hoped it would last at least 5 to 10 years but perhaps that is unrealistic? Being that my wife and I are mostly coffee drinkers these days, we probably will replace this kettle with gooseneck spout type kettle (like this Bonavita: Bonavita 1.0L Electric Kettle BV3825B) instead of another Breville. Overall I''m still a fan of our kettle and will be sad to see it go.

I believe my original score of 5 stars still stands though I''d change it to a 4.5 if Amazon allowed 1/2 stars.

First, this kettle is gorgeous! I bought it for it''s beauty and easy to use variable temperature and the fact it had a viewing window to easily see how much water was inside. Before I used it, I emailed Breville to find out what type of plastic the viewing window was made from. The response I received was a defensive email about how polycarbonate and BPA are safe for food contact and this kettle is safe. I''ve been reading the research on BPA and polycarbonate for years, so they didn''t share anything new with me. I would have preferred their response to simply state "polycarbonate" and then offer to provide me with more information if I had any concerns.

Regardless, they weren''t going to change my mind. I don''t feel comfortable with polycarbonate around my boiling (or close to boiling) water and in this day and age where BPA is a huge uproar, I am super surprised that Breville came out with a brand new kettle containing polycarbonate. I would have loved to see this kettle have a glass viewing window and lid, that would have been super! Especially with the price point they are selling this at. Having it be a "toxin free" kettle with no plastic would have been a great marketing move.

I did reply and thank them for the information and politely told them I would be returning it due to the polycarbonate, but that if they came out with a version that had glass instead of polycarbonate, I''d snap it up in a second. I received no further reply from Breville.

I drink various types of teas constantly to my dentist''s consternation, such as Irish and East Frisian in the morning with Pu Erh Tuo Cha and Green Jasmine in the evening. On the weekends I drink French Pressed coffee.

I did it the old fashioned way with a thermometer. Needless to say, but I will anyway, this kettle did make life simpler, but, (always a but) it has not functioned as advertised.

The primary issue is on the boiling setting for black teas. Sometimes it shuts off, and sometimes it doesn''t. The other presets have worked flawlessly, and this may only be an anomaly with this particular pot.

I will say that I am going to order a second one, and send this one back to Breville for repairs. That should tell you how much I like the idea of this kettle.

This is an incredibly elegant and precise, yet easy to use kettle. Even the sound to let you know when it''s done is discreet and pleasant. Our household has a variety of schedules, and drinks a variety of teas as well as french press coffee. It''s wonderful. Finally, jasmine green tea comes out at home as it should!

The manual holds only critical information, so it''s brief but read it well. I started to be dissatisfied about how the hold temp function works until re-reading the paragraph later.

I''ve only two minor criticisms. I wish that the minimum water that could be heated was 250 ml not 500 ml, but I get around it with an incredible insulated mug/carafe. More annoying is the cord length; if it was just a few inches longer to 2'' it would be great. It''s been difficult to find a place on the counter near an outlet that wouldn''t steam the cupboards above or get knocked over. (And there''s no room to stuff 3-6 feet of the correct type of 3-pronged appliance extension cord.)

So very minor gripes. Even if it broke tomorrow, I''d order another immediately.

I have owned this product less than one year and it has stopped working. I am in the process of obtaining warranty service. The Breville voice mail system appears designed to make the customer go away. Almost any number you press leads to a lengthy recorded message, not to a live rep. Having called the voice mail system multiple times, and tried various options, I finally, after a lengthy hold period, got through to a live rep.

I was informed that I can exercise the warranty but that I must purchase my own shipping materials. I suggested they ship a replacement unit to me and I would ship the broken unit back in the new unit''s packaging but this is not their policy. So I must pay (in money and time) to remedy Breville''s defective product quality.

To summarize: Breville product quality, customer service, and warranty service are poor.

It filters the water really good and removes the chlorine odor which is really what I was after. The water comes out pure and doesn''t smell at all. However, there are two things you need to know about this filter.

First, according to the instructions on the filter, you need to allow water to flow through it for a short time to clear the carbon lines. I hooked up the hose to one end and turned the water part way on to let the water flow out the other open end of the filter, and for about two seconds the water was pure black, which was the carbon coming out upon first use. After about a minute I turned the faucet all the way on and it flowed black for another two seconds. After that, it''s been clean and pure ever since. If you don''t let water run for a few minutes at first to flush out the loose carbon and just connect the filter without flushing it, you''re going to have carbon inside your system.

Second, according to the instructions on the filter, it says do not freeze. Well, if you hook this to the outside of an RV and it''s winter time, I''m not sure you you can avoid this.

But it is a good filter that works great and I will buy more of them.

While this product is intended for use with RVs, I use it as an inexpensive and convenient way to filter tap water for homebrewing beer. I simply thread it onto a white, drinking water hose (also an RV product)and direct the flow into my hot liquor tank. The filtered water tastes very pure and clean, with no hint of chlorine.

I find this product to be very economical and convenient, and a lot simpler than other filtering solutions. After use, I simply drain the excess water, place it in a ziplock bag and stow it in the fridge until my next brewing session.

I''m using this filter with my travel trailer. Does a very nice job removing odor, and the water taste is good. Not sure about the overall filtering capability though. It has a fairly high micron passthrough. Would recommend considering price and overall performance though.
