I live in an apartment and a few months ago I got new neighbors in the apartment below. They smoke constantly and often have parties with 8-10 people in a tiny apartment all smoking all night. The building is old, the smoke comes through not only the ventilation system, but directly through the floors and fills my apartment with the disgusting stench of Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS). This is so good that a friend whose child suffers from severe asthma [and who has an Oreck air filter that cost about $800--which broke down as soon as the warranty expired], could actually sense how much cleaner the air was when she was in the vicinity of the Austin and asked me where she could buy one. She asked even though I have had this for nearly 10 years [one filter change so far, by the calendar, not because I sensed it stop working].I can''t recommend it strongly enough.
While it is a bit noisy, it''s an even background noise, not at all irritating [and I am a real noise crank]; in fact when my neighbors have a party [their dining room wall is my bedroom wall], the hum actually is an added bonus and helps me to fall sleep.

It''s been over a year since I bought this air purifier, so I figured I''d better hop back on here and review it. I never had a "good" air purifier before owning this one. This is a serious air purifier. I live in a small apartment with 3 cats and I pretty much run this air purifier 24/7 in my bedroom and sometimes push it out to the living room to clear the air out there. My allergy symptoms are much less magnified with this machine running. I sleep so much better at night, cause I can breath a lot better. I used to wake up in the morning with coughing or wheezing from allergies (probably from the cats) and I don''t experience this anymore. On the lowest setting, I can hardly even hear it running in the corner of my bedroom. I crank it up to the highest setting when I''m not in the room, and it''s pretty loud but cleans a lot of air.I like to run this machine in a room after vacuuming and cleaning, it pulls the dust and other stuff that gets kicked up, it can clear a room fast on the highest setting. Sometimes I''ll vacuum the floors and furniture (lots of cat hair to pick up of course) then push this machine into the room and crank it up to high, then leave and come back in a couple hours. Clean floors, furniture and air await me when I return.
I really like that this is a simple and straightforward machine. Plug it in and turn it to one of the speed settings and that is about it. No electronics to fail or wear out. Just need to replace the filter every few years. I like this machine a lot.

I love this purifier! I noticed a big difference with my allergies and asthma... could breathe easier in the mornings and not as congested. When I first used a Dyson dryer at an airport I thought they were cool and worked good. They will dry your hands.Now that the dryers are getting older I have noticed that the Dyson will hold water (that is blown off your hands)in the bottom and then leak on the floor (look at the customer images loaded). This water is germ filled and NOT sanitary.
One customer image shows how the unit is very corroded. Holding the water caused this. If you are going to buy a hand dryer buy the Excel Dryer.XLERATOR XL-BW Automatic Surface-Mounted Hand Dryer with White Thermoset (BMC) Cover, 12-11/16" Height x 11-3/4" Width x 6-11/16" Depth
It works great and costs $1100 less than the Dyson.
The good:
This is an attractive unit, and looks very modern. I also thought it was not as noisy as some high velocity hand dryers I have used. It turned off quickly after I pulled my hands out, which saves energy. It might be more hygienic than using a regular bathroom towel which is changed once a week, so this could be useful in a private bathroom which is used by only one person.
The bad:
If you wanted to design a way to spread germs in a public place, this is the answer.
Hopefully, the design can eventually be improved. As it is, I''m going to lobby to have it removed from our gym and have something else put in its place.

Like most people, I wince when I see an electric hand dryer in a public restroom -I know that I will try to use it and end up with either damp hands or I''ll walk away wiping my hands on my trousers. Last year we had white chalky crap ALL OVER our house. I thought it was the water only, but I guess this should help that also. We just replaced it but also upgraded our water system to a reverse osmosis. Between that and this my white residue problem is solved.
This is the second filter to be used with the unit. I will base this review on the first unit as I have yet to run this one its full life.
The original filter still left a lot of white dust all over her room even though it is supposed to eliminate the powder.
It is also the only one that fits the compartment (that I am aware of)so I cannot choose to try another product. Next time I think I will be more diligent about a humidifier.

I keep trying to clean it out, but never feel confident that it is completely gone and not just airborne for my family to breathe in. I replaced an older GE GXRM10GBL Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration System purchased at Home Depot with this Watts unit. Where this system wins out is the ease of maintenance. It''s very easy to pop any of the filter cartridges in and out. GE system was harder to maintain and some of the parts broke during maintenance. The main issue was that whenever I need to sanitize the system or replace RO cartridge, I had to open the plastic cap to the RO cartridge holder, which is made out of fairly light plastic. Every 1-2 years, after opening a couple of times, the plastic cab would break when I screw it back on. The replacement part for the RO cartridge holder is $150, which is the same price as buying a new unit.
Here is my comparison, as of Jan 2011. Watts is a clear winner in my mind. Just a lot less hassle to maintain and probably cheaper in the long run. I''ll probably update the post after a year or so to see if Watts still holds up well.

Replacing pre/post filter Advantage Watts. Watts takes me 10 seconds. GE takes me 10 minutes and water can get spilled easily.
Replacing RO membrane Advantage Watts. Watts takes me 5 seconds, GE takes me 20 minutes if everything goes well. I also have to have 2 very large clamps to open up the RO cartridge holder.
Sanitize system Advantage Watts. Watt is a lot easier to sanitize, takes 5 minutes to put in the bleach, and 4 hours flush afterwards, which can be unattended. GE require us to remove pre/post/RO membrane, and sanitize, and then put everything back. It''s something that takes me about an hour, with 4 hours flush time in between. And water gets spilled easily.
Durability Advantage Watts. I haven''t had Watts for long, but I can tell by how simple it is to swap the cartridges that it won''t break easily. We simply don''t have to take anything apart during maintenance where as GE requires you to do more mechanical things. Parts of GE breaks system after a couple sanitization or replacing RO membrane. Buy parts is a big pain since local stores don''t sell it and have to call GE to older. Some parts are very expensive.

Durability comment about WATTS above holds so far, nothing breaking. Water still tastes great.
The indicator light on the faucet, indicating filter need to change, seem to light up earlier than what the document replacement time should be ... So I end up ignoring that light.
PS. if you are installing an RO system yourself (any RO system), make sure plumbing is done right and always check for slow leaks every month. With RO systems, the water pressure in some pipes build up slowly as filtered water gets created. So don''t just install the system and assume there are no leaks. Check in 1 day, a week, then in a month...

Our municipal water is horrible. It smells like a swimming pool and is very hard.I purchased this unit from Costco not Amazon. When I pulled it out of the box I started to think that it was going to be complicated to install. The well written directions made it easy to install the unit. All of the connections except for the water supply are quick connect which are secure and easy to make.
After the unit was installed and I opened up the water supply I could hear the water gurgling and the waste of the RO running down the drain. The directions call for draining the first tank of water which I did. The second tank that we sampled was the best water I''ve ever had from home. It is far better than a Britta pitcher. It has a crisp, clean taste without any chlorine smell.
I let my kids sample the difference by trying 2 cups, one from the faucet, one from the filter. My 9 year old son didn''t even need to drink to tell the difference. Once he took a taste of the unfiltered tap water, he pushed it away and said it was horrible. He hung on to the filtered water.
Now we can refill reusable bottles and I don''t have to haul cases of bottled water home. It is better for the environment and much cheaper. We are drinking more water rather than soda because it tastes good and is easy to get to.
Another added benefit is that I put a tee in the connection as the instruction described and routed the water to my Samsung Fridge. The Samsung water filters cost about $40 plus shipping from Amazon. Now I can stop buying these filters every six months. The quality of the water from the Watts filter is much better than the Samsung filter.
The only negative part of the install is that the storage tank takes up a fair space under the sink. The directions say that you can put the filter/storage up to 25 feet away with 1/4 inch line or further with a 3/8''s line. In reality the space under the sink was taken up with a bunch of junk that we never used and having good water at the sink is a much better use of the space.
UPDATE 4-10: Someone contacted me through my Samsung fridge filter review and pointed out to me that Reverse Osmosis can waste a high ratio (1:3) to (1:5) of water make its final product. You can hear the water running down the drain after you use the faucet. The sound bothers my wife so I put the drain plug in as a mute. I am considering running a line to my drip sprinkler system.

I only installed (properly) this unit for a few days. It seems to work well. That is not the point of my review. I purchased and installed my first unit a few weeks ago. The waste water gushed down to the drain instead of tricking for few hours after each use (e.g., filling up a glass of filtered water). I thought the shut-off valve is bad so I got a replace unit. The second unit behaved the same way. At that point, I thought it is just a poor design -a very wasteful design. As I was reading the review of other similar filters (I was ready to return my 2nd unit and buy a different model), I saw someone wrote something about there is section of tubing that has a insert in it. That immediately reminded me that I removed a section of tubing (a short red one on the waste line) that appeared to be redundant. Fortunately, I still have that piece of tubing. There it is! a small plastic insert on one end of the tubing. Apparently, this insert is to crease a back pressure so that the shut off valve can function correctly. After I put this section of tubing back in, it no longer continuously discharges water to the drain. I feel bad about returning that first unit. After one year of wonderful use, a plastic or rubber flavor began to emerge in the water. The flavor was similar to a very weak version of the flavor that you might get from drinking out of a garden water hose. I replaced all four filter cartridges, and the flavor persisted. I called Watts Premier and followed a Watts engineer''s instructions and we determined that the flavor was coming from the storage tank. I also noticed that the flavor was strongest in the morning, when filtered water had been sitting in the storage tank for a while; the flavor was least noticeable after allowing filtered water to flow down the drain for a long while. Watts sent me a new storage tank free of charge, and I was happy with that service. Unfortunately, the flavor persisted even with the new storage tank. KDF/GAC filters have been around a long time. They are vastly superior to other filters. I have, in addition to the under the counter water filter with a KDF/GAC cartridge, a whole house sediment filter using a 10 micron pleated filter. The sediment filter keeps material from ending up in the KDF/GAF filter and thereby extending the KDG/GAC filter''s useful life.The current KDF/GAC filter now in use was installed in 1999. It is rated at 20,000 gallons. (This filter can easily do twice that amount and still be 93% to 99% efficient depending on what substances are being removed.) At 20,000 gallons, that would mean 4,000 days at 5 gallons per day for drinking and cooking purposes. That is just short of 11 years. We don''t use 5 gallons per day for making coffee, cooking food and drinking purposes and this filter is still going strong and doing an excellent job. You may use tap water to rinse food for preparation, just don''t cook with it.
You will know when the KDF/GAC filter''s life is coming to an end when the water flow becomes weak. Even then it is still working, but time to replace the filter.

I don''t have ''bad'' water, but don''t like the subtle chlorine flavor/smell, which this takes care of.Most other filters need to be replaced every three to six months or so; not because they are ''used up'', but because the bacteria that survives until it gets inside a carbon filter (the part that removes the chlorine, that kills the bugs) starts colonizing it.
Theoretically the copper/zinc portion protects the rest of the filter from growing the bacterial slime that forces you to throw out other kinds of filters. I can''t really attest to that, short of cutting open the filter and feeling for slimy ''ick''.
This kind of filter is a great money saver on rentals with in-sink filters and/or ice makers inline before the fridge (check your refrigerator manual most of them allow you to completely remove or to install a ''dummy'' filter, so you can use a cheaper filter inline with the input water supply). You know the tenants won''t ever change a filter, so the inline version of this will take care of the fridge for years.
After about two years of this being on the cold water side of the kitchen tap, it still tastes OK and has good flow for everything. Filling water bottles, coffee, kettle, pots, etc.
The filter somewhat reduces (but does not eliminate) the scaly build-up on things like hot water kettles and coffee makers. The kind of stuff a little vinegar knocks right out.

I have to say that I was skeptical about a whole water filtration & softening system for the price found here.
