Old Friend Women''s Ladies Step-In

Womens Step-in SlipperMy mother wouldn''t part with her Old Friend slippers even though it was time, so I finally told her we could get free shipping if we both ordered a pair and she went for that! She feels great in her new pair and I love mine even more than I expected. They are warm, cozy, easy to slip in and out of and the velcro strap is wonderful for adjusting the fit. I wear them around the house all the time. And we received our order in 2 days! Win! Win!

I purchased this shoe for my MIL who is a diabetic and suffers from neuropthy in her lower extremities. These slippers help to keep her feet warm and dry. she likes the fact that the flaps can be adjusted to fit across the top of her foot and that her toes are not bunched up inside the shoe. She wears them with compression socks to help with the circulation.

I will no longer have to buy her the "cheap" slippers at the big box store as these should last forever.

We bought these slippers as a gift for Mom in the nursing home. They are easy to get on and off, and are great quality. The fleece lining is wonderfully soft. Great product!

Had to return these. Due to this slipper (when tightened with the toe flap) allowing for my foot to want to slide out the toe area, they were not comfortable.

Megahome Countertop Water Distiller, Stainless Steel, Glass Bottle
  • No installation required, does not take a lot of space, and easy to operate.
  • It is safe and reliable with its auto power off system.
  • It can produce 100% pure distilled water anywhere, anytime, and with any kind of water.
  • A variety of safety certifications that are recognizable internationally, which guarantees our product safety.
  • The MegaHome distiller is higly portable and produces approximately 1 U.S. gallon (3.785L) every 6 hours.

First, I need to point out the not-so-obvious fact that this is the stainless steel version of the "Water Distiller, Countertop, White Enamel" product sold by MegaHome/NutriTeam.

To make a long story short, I got this product last night and this morning I woke up to perfectly tasting distilled water.

For the long story...I read all the reviews for the white color version and decided this was worth a try. I placed my order by noon Friday and received the distiller just last night (Tuesday). I was anxious to test this distiller for myself because it might save me quite a bit of money if I could stop buying bottled water. The only negative reviews I''d read seemed to focus on the plastic or metallic flavor of the distilled water. The manufacturer suggests it can happen when new bottles smell like plastic. As soon as I opened the box, I searched for the plastic bottle to smell it. There was no distinct plastic smell that I could detect. One of the reviewers pointed out that your geographical location affects the mineral content in the water and thus can strongly affect its flavor. Living north of Philadelphia, water has a fairly neutral flavor and there''s no high mineral content that I know about. Still, I filled the bottle with water filtered through a regular Brita filter I have connected to my faucet. Filling the bottle to the very top is exactly the amount of water required to fill the distiller container right to the fill line. Followed the simple instructions and started the distiller. It wasn''t as noisy as I expected, however it''s loud enough that you might not want to run it during a dinner party. (Makes good white noise if you need it.) It''s supposed to take 4-6 hrs to distil one gallon of water. Warm water may shorten the process. Since I ran it overnight, with cold water, I have no idea of how long it took. That will be an experiment for the weekend. Come morning, the distiller was done and the water was surprisingly fresh and good tasting.

For those concerned about whether distilled water draws minerals from your body, therefore raising acidity levels, read about the benefits of adding pH Drops before drinking. Cheers!

November 27, 2006 Update:

--------------------------

I use this distiller almost daily and I''m still very happy with my purchase and very glad I got it. Water tastes perfect, whether I pre-filtered it or not. I was surprised another reviewer had problems with leaks, since I''ve none whatsoever. The unit makes a very useful white noise, which is better for reading than for conversation though it doesn''t bother me (I usually run the unit at night). I have not noticed much difference in distilling time, whether I use hot or cold water. I do get a lot of mineral deposits left over. However, I can remove them easily with a sponge or with the solvent that was provided.

We enjoyed our distiller for 2 years. We used it about twice a week. Recently, the machine stopped after distilling water in the middle of a cycle. It did this several times before I took the top off, removed the screws, and cleaned it (but it wasn''t very dusty at all). It still shut off shortly after starting the cycle. I then took a closer look at the base unit. When I lifted it, I was surprised to find that it was so heavy. When I tipped the base, water poured out of the outlet for the plug--not a good sign. I looked at the bottom of the stainless steel (?), and found dimples at the welds. There was evidence of rust around one of the welds, and a pinhole crack. I''m disappointed that we didn''t get more use out of this machine.

This distiller has worked as I expected, although I think the "5-hour" estimate of how long it takes to distill one gallon is a little optimistic. Not a problem for me I turn it on and let it go.

It produces a lot of heat in the house (can''t be avoided). In cold weather, it''s great because it helps warm up the house, but in the summer, it''s an air-conditioning nightmare (I live in Florida). So in the heat of the summer, I will probably have to move it outside.

I don''t like the plastic container. I''d rather have glass, and you can get the glass jugs but they''re expensive. I''d rather see the spout a little further out so that I could fit a standard glass jug underneath it. But for the money, I can''t find another one that has this capability.

I tested the water with a Sprite water tester and the conductivity was around 1uS/cm (microsiemens per centimeter a standard measure of water impurity), which is comparable to distilled water from Zepherhills (rain water off my dirty roof is around 9uS/cm and my ordinary Florida tap water is around 2500uS/cm not bad, and probably cleaner than other places filtered tap water goes up to 2700uS/cm which is even worse, so filters don''t do dooddily-squat). When I used the charcoal filter, the conductivity went up to around 9uS/cm, so the filter adds (probably harmless) impurities, but I use it to help capture other chemical impurities that won''t distill out.

The inside of the container gets caked-over after a single distilling. It doesn''t come off, easily. I haven''t used the chemical remover yet (I''ve only had this about a month or so), but I use a copper kitchen scrubber on it once in a while and that keeps the buildup down to a manageable level. The leftover water (a little bit at the bottom) stinks after one use (a testament to the impurity of my tap water), so it has to be rinsed out after each use (and occasionally scrubbed).

I don''t like the way the top cord connects to the bottom. I have to unplug it to take the top off and put new water in. If there was a small, built-in connector that comes loose when you take the top off, that would be ideal. Also, there should be a better way to remove the top. You have to wrap your hands around it to get it off, and if it''s hot, you''re in for a steam burn (so I don''t touch it for at least two hours after it''s done).

Finally, the only serious problem I have is that the "Reset" button is also the safety shutoff. There should be one of each. If the Reset button ever fails, there needs to be a back-up emergency switch that engages, and it should be plain for the customer/user to see. Otherwise, it could be a potential fire hazard (in other words, don''t leave the house or go to sleep with this thing on). So I run it only when I''m going to be home and able to be near it for the duration.

My previous calculations of cost to distill one gallon of water (about 26 cents energy to vaporize one gallon of water is about 8.5MJ (MegaJoules), which is about 2.4kWh (kilowatt-hours), which costs around 26 cents), may be off, since I did not include the cost of running a fan to cool the condenser, and if you cool the air with an air conditioner, multiply that number by 4 (minimum more if your air conditioner is inefficient) to get your total expense for one gallon of distilled water.

Don''t overfill the canister or you will have a pond on your kitchen cabinet.

I have had this distiller for about a month now. We normally make 2 gallons of distilled water a day. A couple weekends ago, we had a lot of company, and made 3 to 4 gallons a day over the holiday weekend.

I thought it might be a little bit of a hassle to always be making water, but it really hasn''t been a problem. I start it before going to bed, and there is 1 gallon waiting when I wake. Part of that gallon is used to make coffee, and the rest goes in the ''fridge. I usually restart it in the morning before heading to work for our second gallon.

I had read reviews, either here or elsewhere complaining about the task of cleaning out this style of distiller. I have had no issues with buildup that is hard to remove. I normally rince out the chamber after each use. Once a week, I will use the included cleaner to remove any residue that has formed over the week. Honestly, there is almost nothing. I could probably go a month before having anything significant there. I guess that just means my source water is fairly clean. I do have a under cabinet filter for my kitchen faucet, so most sediment is already removed. To clean it, it''s just a matter of filling the boiling chamber with water, adding a couple scoops of the cleaner, and turning the machine on without the top on it for 15 to 20 minutes. After that, you just dump it out and rince it. Any residue that had developed on the bottom is gone. By "residue" mine has only shown what looks to be a slight stain or discoloration. No rock formations for crusty growths.

There is no strange taste as I have read on a few reviews. Other than myself, there have been about 15 different people that have been here and drank some of this water since I started using this machine. No one detected anything strange with the taste. The comments from others saying the water had a metalic taste must be isolated issues.

My wife did not like using the plastic jug. The water coming out of the distiller was 105 to 110 degrees. Not exactly HOT, but still fairly warm. We did not detect any "plastic" smell or taste from any of the water that came out of the plastic jug. The material the jug is made from is supposed to be low in the "biphenol whatevers" but we choose not to use it just to be safer.

The glass jugs are VERY expensive, IMO. $100 for a jug seems overboard. I found a 1 gallon glass "cookie jar" at Wal*Mart for about $7. It had a metal screw on lid, similar to a lid on a Mason Jar. We tossed that lid, though. The edge sides of this jar are straight up, so it fits well under the spout from the distiller. If you have a jar with a "bottle shape", the opening of the jar will not align under the spout from the distiller. Right now, we are using a piece of tape to hold the filter to the outlet, since this jug will not hold the filter in place. I plan on using some of my woodworking skills to make my own lid that will cover the jug while making water and be able to hold the filter. The distiller needs to sit on something about 1" tall, though to accomodate this jug, otherwise you need to make slightly less than 1 gallon of water, otherwise my filter will stick into the water when it makes a full gallon. Easy fix. For that little "problem" it is well worth the trouble to save the $100 and use this cookie jar.

We also bought 2 glass water bottles from Wal*Mart that each hold about half a gallon. So, we have 1 gallon of cold water available in the fridge while another gallon is being made.

The fan on the top of the distiller makes a "hum" although it is not excessively loud. The microwave and dishwasher are definitely louder than the fan on the distiller. I really do not notice the hum from it anymore. The noise from the distiller was really my biggest concern before I got one. I was worried it was going to sound like the blender for 5 hours while making the water.

There are many different distillers on the market and most are very expensive, so I did a lot of homework before making this purchase. As I needed only 1-2 gallons of water per day, it came down to this unit or the Waterwise 4000. Referring to schematics of both units, it appeared that they were virtually identical in design. With that said, although the Waterwise may cost $100 more than the Megahome distiller, I cannot imagine it uses significantly better materials. I want to address that right off the bat for anyone trying to decide between the two. I cannot comment on the build quality of the Waterwise, but you will not be disappointed with the construction of the Megahome. This appliance is made to last a VERY long time. Think of how long the thin plastic/glass coffee maker at work has lasted. In contrast, this distiller is made of industrial grade stainless steel, and what plastic there is on the unit/collector flask is thick and durable. There is only one moving part, (the fan motor), and this too seems very well built. It''s also replaceable. Have you ever tried to replace a part of your coffee maker? Good luck with that. Basically, this unit is a tank. On that note, don''t expect to tuck it away in some tiny corner of your counter. Although it will fit under a standard upper cabinet, combined with the collection flask it will require about the same square footage as a toaster oven.

One more note on the fan; the noise is not a big deal. If you have kids, a dog & a doorbell, or a dishwasher, you will not even notice it. Other appliances that make as much noise as the Megahome distiller; the ice maker in your freezer, a convection oven, the kitchen faucet.

So how well does it work? I see a lot of comments regarding water flavor. This may depend on the water you are starting with, although in theory it should all turn out the same. For me personally, the water comes out crystal clear, and tastes like snow melt when cold. In my book, that''s about as good as it gets. Perhaps a better indicator of how well it works can be seen in the bottom of the pot at the end of a cycle. In addition to all the mineral salts left behind, I am left with about a tablespoon/gallon of nasty tan liquid.

It''s a pity more people are not aware of the direct impact water quality has on their health. You don''t have to be a ''wacko anti-fluoridation conspiracy theorist'' to appreciate home distilled water. Buy a distiller and I bet you will effect a positive health change in a friend simply by doing two things;

1) give them a cold glass of distiller water you have made

2) show them the sludge left behind in the distiller from only 1 gallon of public drinking water

If cost is the issue, consider that an average weight adult should be consuming approximately 1 gallon of water per day, which is easy to do once you get into the habit. And don ''t forget the ice cubes! Unless you/your family drink a lot of milk, soda, or fruit juices, this distiller will pay for itself in just a few months. If not, you don''t need a distiller.

****3 years later***

This is still one of the appliances I rely on most in my house. I''ve certainly gotten my money''s worth out of it and would not hesitate to replace it if it stopped working. The only problem I''ve had is that the start button broke off about a year ago. This is more or less a cosmetic issue as the actuator behind the button is still accessible. One reviewer mentioned rust inside the unit at the weld sites. I have noticed this too but the rust spots are very small and localized, and can easily be removed by gentle rubbing with a very small piece of fine steel wool. If I do this for a few seconds, the problem won''t reoccur for a very long time. This only seems to occur when I''ve left the distiller idle for several days after a cycle, (i.e. with moisture trapped inside), which is asking for trouble. Finally, others have commented about hard water build up. The simplest and gentlest solution is to fill the unit up with hot water, add a cup of vinegar, then turn the unit on with the fan assembly removed until the hard water deposits dissolve, (approx. 15 minutes).

Mr. Coffee 4-Cup Switch Coffeemakers Save 5% Off

Mr. Coffee TF5 4-Cup Switch Coffeemaker, BlackI have owned several Mr. Coffee 4 cup models, going back to the one that looks like it was made in the 1970''s (with the floating orange water indicator) This one is the best one to date.

The high points:

1) It''s small and light

2) While the lid is up, the water will simply cycle through the resovoir ( a great way to preheat your water is to simply keep the lid up while the machine is running until it gets (quite) hot then close the lid. )

3) It came with a re-usable basket filter (a nice feature considering the machine was only ~ 20$)

The negative

1) The carafe is just a tad difficult to pour from. Do not get me wrong, if you concentrate and proceed with caution, it does function without error. However, without due attention you might notice some drops spilling over the edge. That said, when pouring out the last few ounces at the end you will feel the steam/vapor rising up to your hand it is HOT.

For $20, I would reccomend it to everyone I know as the perfect 4 cup maker.

I finally had to admit: My Krupps 4-cup coffee maker no longer made good coffee. I faithfully cleaned it with vinegar, kept coffee oils wiped off, but to no avail. After weeks I had to admit that the "Folger''s in my cup" no longer had the power to make me sing. I turned to Community coffee--egads! How was this possible? Even my strong Louisiana coffee was lacking. Then I tried Starbuck''s. No deal there either. OK, it''s my old coffee maker, I thought. That made me sad--my long-time companion had to go.

I searched everywhere and finally settled on Mr. Coffee TF4-4-cup Switch Coffeemaker, white, of course, and couldn''t be happier! With the very first cup, I was back in business--the business of taste and looking forward to that cup in the morning. I should say mug (equals about one and 1/2 cups of regular-sized coffee cups).

Here are the reasons I like this new coffee maker:

1. It is easy and convenient to lift the lid and place the filter.

2. Of course, putting coffee into the filter is easy, too!

3. What is superior about this unit is the water-free pour into the little tank. Sometimes I spilled a few drops of water with my old unit, but Mr. Coffee''s carafe is designed to prevent spillage. The shape of the spout allows a good pour from one unit into the other.

4. The light right in front is an easy signal that the unit is either on or off.

5. Cleaning the unit is simple: Remove filter, remove basket, swipe through dishwater or rinse under running faucet, return to basket-holder.

6. But here''s the best reason: Mr. Coffee makes a great pot of coffee!!

Now I can sing again: The best thing about waking up is Folger''s in my cup and Mr. Coffee on my counter!!

With my forced switch to decaf I needed a small coffee maker that would make two real cups (4 coffee maker cups). The Melitta take2me is a rather large machine, and was problematic in the consumer reviews. I couldn''t find a Black & Decker Brew n'' Go to look at. The TF4 is a small, very basic machine that brews as well as our larger coffee makers. The pause and pour feature works reasonably well. It uses the small basket filters. It''s easy to clean. It does, however, require about five and a half minutes to brew a full pot. So far it is well worth the $15 invested.

I''ve owned an older generation 4-cup Mr. Coffee maker, and used it daily for 12 years. It worked perfectly! (I retired it only because it was getting too dirty to clean, after 12 years of use.) Amazing!

This newer sibling to the tried-and-true is thus far living up to the task, and very well I might add. I like how the lighted on/off switch is located on the front of the coffee maker, not hidden on the side where you have to feel for where it''s placed. The reusable filter (included) is a nice extra costing about 4 bucks if you buy separately. And it''s much more convenient than the paper filters.

By the way, don''t waste your money on a model with a timer. It''s small 4-cup capacity brews a full pot in only five or six minutes. Simply click it on as soon as you wake up, and before you know it, coffee''s ready!

I can whole-heartedly recommend Mr. Coffee. Anyone who can produce a coffee maker that lasts for 12 years has my vote!

Note: If you use a regular sized coffee mug and not the dainty little cups, you''ll get about 2 1/2 servings per pot... just FYI.

Want Mr. Coffee 4-Cup Switch Coffeemakers Discount?

This little coffee maker brews very good coffee. But there are three things to keep in mind in order to repeatedly get pleasant tasting coffee when using this coffee maker.

#1. Make sure you lightly clean the decanter & basket and brew 4 CUPS OF WATER before you ever make your first cup of coffee with this coffeemaker. This is important, and is right on page 2 of the directions.

I would bet that many people skip this step, and consequently wonder why the coffee they made has a subpar taste.

#2. Clean the coffee maker once a month. White vinegar works quite well. Again, the directions give the proper procedure.

#3. Keep in mind that with this coffeemaker, "one cup" of coffee = 5 ounces. If say, you want to drink 8 ounces of coffee(one measured cup) you should fill the reservoir to the 2 cup (10 ounce) mark. The paper filter absorbs around 2 ounces of water, so after brewing you are left with one "cup" of coffee.

BestAir A12W Aprilaire 12 Paper Wick Waterpad Save 10% Off

BestAir A12W Aprilaire 12 Paper Wick WaterpadI chose this item as a less expensive substitute for the Apilaire water pad. After using it for a few weeks, I ntoiced a puddle of water on the floor around the furnace. After opening the furnace, I found about a half-inch of water at the bottom of the air return duct and some water inside the furnace. I removed the water pad from the humidifer and noticed that there was about a 1/2 inch gap between the top of the pad and the bottom of the water distribution tray. I don''t remember whether it was like this when I first installed it ( I think that it was) or whether it may have shrunk or deformed after being wet for some time. In either event, because of the gap, if the air flow through the humidifer is strong enough, the air blows the water dripping off the bottom of the distribution tray directly into the air duct instead of allowing it to dtip onto the top of the pad. Through time, it accumulates at the bottom of the duct and eventually leaks into the furnace and onto the floor. This product is not suitable for use in an Aprilaire model 440 humidifer. Do not buy it. Spend a few dollars more and buy the Aprilaire replacement pad which is a stiffer material instead of this paper-like material and does not have a gap between the top of the pad and the bottom of the distribution tray.

This item is intended as a replacement water pad for a humidifier system. Its packaging lists it as compatible with:

Aprilaire 112, 136, 224, 440, 445, 445A, 448

Chippewa 224, 225, 226

Walton 600, 620, 660

I ordered this item from Todays Concept. The item graphic at the time showed an A12W Aprilaire replacement waterpad box. And the title for the item at the time was "RPS #A12W Aprilaire112 Water Pad" however the item received was a regular A12, not the A12W. The item image has since been updated to show a graphic of the waterpad itself, not the packaging. But the item title still specifies "#A12W" at the time of this review.

Also, the item description at the time of review is a bit sketchy, including "features" unrelated to a replacement water pad, including:

1-DuraGuard antimicrobial vinyl with a molded wood core

2-Stylish designs complement your bath décor

3-Fits all manufacturer''s standard round bowls

The item received (#A12) is actually made of layers of expanded metal (see ) coated with a white substance, possibly vinyl or teflon (difficult to say). The difference with an A12W is that an A12W is often made of expanded plastic and coated with an absorptive material such as paper fiber or cloth fiber. The absorptive material helps to distribute the water and gives it more surface area from which to evaporate, also it helps minimize wasted water.

Be aware, unless they have changed inventory, you may be receiving an A12 rather than an A12W.

A few people have commented on the price of Delta replacement filters, which are slightly smaller than -somestandard filters. Be aware that less expensive, high quality filters can be found.

Most standard filters have actual dimensions that are a bit smaller than the nominal size. A typical 12x24x1 filter might actually be 11.75 x 23.75 x .75 or 11.625 x 23.625 x .75 (both too big for the AP2000). However, there are companies whose 12x24x1 is actually 11.5 x 23.5 x .75 -which is a perfect fit (sort of) for my AP200 -Endust is one such filter I can buy locally, and a three-pack of Merv-6 pleated filters can be had for about the price of ONE Delta filter. As with the Delta, I can extend the life of my filters by vacuuming out sawdust, etc.

Sort-of perfect fit means perfect in the 23.5 dimension, and perfect-once-installed in the 11.5 dimension. From what I recall, the Delta filters are 11.375, so you can push it up into the top track, then swing the bottom over the bottom track and drop it into place. The extra 1/8 inch of my filters requires that I gently bend the filter to swing the bottom into the track, but once in, it is a nice snug fit -no need to tape the edges.

Searching the internet tonight, I found 11.5 x 23.5 x .75 Merv-8 filters at $5.49/each when you buy a case of 12, and Merv-13 at $12/each when you buy a case of 6 -both with free shipping. Look around -you can find affordable filters that will fit.

The Delta A200 Shopmaster air filter is an excellent product, however Delta brand filters, at more than $12 each, are way too expensive! I ordered a box standard 12x24x1 furnace filters, 10 for around $32. When the filters arrived they were of equal or better quality then the Delta filters, HOWEVER, they are just slightly too large! Seems like Delta forces you to use their off-size filter, rather than an industry standard. I assume they see consumables as a high margin business.

I suggest you consider another other brand air filter system, like Jet, and determine if they can use standard sized filters. If yes, DO NOT buy the Delta air filter system. In the longrun, you will save a ton of money if you can use a standard filter.

Technivorm Moccamaster Coffee Brewer With Thermo Carafe - Technivorm 9587I love coffee. For the past year, I''ve been immersed in the technical and chemical artistry (and it truly is) of home roasting my own coffee and perfecting the brewing process to take advantage of total control and total freshness. Up to now, I''ve made my single cups using a thermostatically controlled water kettle and a cone drip device which allows me to control the "steep" time of the water at the proper temperature. But what to do when guests come over?

The overwhelming consensus is that the TechniVorm (TV) is the Rolls Royce of batch coffee makers. I got one as a gift and I agree.

We all know that cheap coffee makers cannot supply brewing temperature water at the desired 203F. My Mr. Coffee, for example, was 169F at the brewhead. More on this in a minute.

The coffee maker comes assembled and requires only that the brewhead wand, filter basket and covers be installed. The water chamber is clear plastic with cup level markings on the side. I have not measured the "cup" volumes yet but I suspect they are consistent with a 6 oz. cup size. The coffee measure with the TV is said to make two cups per scoop, which is fairly accurate as a starting point. The filter basket, basket cover and water chamber cover are black plastic. The brewhead wand is stainless steel.

The TV is simple enough to use. Placing the filter basket on a plastic support is a no-brainer except that it helps to notice that the handle should go in front facing you, not to either side. This is because the basket is wedge shaped at the bottom to accommodate the #4 cone filters used, and the brewhead wand is designed to distribute water along the length of the bottom wedge. There are nine holes in the brewhead which distribute water effectively onto the coffee.

Taking a closer look at the TV, it is obvious that one of the reasons it achieves the proper high brewing temperature is that the siphon from the heating chamber passes through an outer plastic tube which effectively insulates the heated water from the cold unheated water in the water chamber. This is the main design flaw with cheaper coffee makers. The TV also has two heating coils rather than one to help maintain a high enough water temperature.

Additional control is provided with a three-position switch on the side of the filter basket. The positions are full flow (although the hole is quite small), partial flow and closed. My brewing so far has been to leave the switch open, as I''m brewing 10-cup batches and use a rather fine grind which extends the drip time. I have not yet made 2-cup batches, but I will plan to close the switch completely to enable a 4-minute steep time before releasing the coffee into the carafe. Note that the grind is a major variable here since fine grind will slow the water considerably over a coarser grind. I use a burr grinder which can be controlled easily. If you use a blade grinder, plan on a very fine grind and longer brew times.

Since I use home roasted coffee, my coffee is extremely fresh after a customary 4-day rest period. Very fresh coffee will give off CO2 which causes some foaming on the surface. This could be a problem if you are brewing 10-cup batches with a full filter and you restrict the flow with the second position on the filter basket switch, so beware. Commercial coffee, especially pre-ground, will not usually foam as it has already begun to stale. I would recommend brewing with the filter basket cover removed until you get a feel for how the water flows through your coffee. Overflow is certainly possible but not likely with the switch fully open, and my 10-cup batches with very fresh coffee came only to 1/2" of the top of the filter basket. If you get an overflow, then, you either have ground the coffee too finely and/or you are using filters that are too restrictive. I use Filtropia and Melitta, preferring the former.

The power is controlled by a single switch. The light on the switch stays on following brewing, but the coils shut off automatically at the end of a brewing cycle and the brew light goes out. There is no timer, which is often a complaint if you''re too lazy to grind and brew when you wake up. I always grind fresh and brew with fresh water and it takes only 60 seconds to fill the chamber, grind a couple of scoops of coffee and press the button. I prefer this to having a chamber full of stale water overnight.

The stainless steel carafe is a vacuum carafe and is perhaps the weakest link. I cannot imagine using a glass carafe with this machine, as coffee temperature is the whole purpose of the design, and an uninsulated glass carafe is good only to keep the coffee from spilling on the counter! This carafe keeps coffee hot for hours. Pouring is the only issue I might have here. The pour lip has no dimple and if you pour with the screw-in lid, it can spread a bit along the lip and cause some spilling. On the other hand, if you loosen the lid, turn it to the proper 1/4 positions and pour slowly, the coffee comes out leaving a nice ring of fresh-coffee bubbles inside the rim of the cup. This may well have been intended, as everything else on this device is well engineered. Just don''t get in a real hurry to pour with the lid on. You can, of course remove the lid to pour.

Overall, the best of the best with the vacuum carafe.

I have to say that some of the reviews of this product make me despair of the whole review process. They seem to fall into "no coffee maker should cost this much," or "it''s not made of platinum." In either case, my advice is this: don''t buy it! For those interested in a review of the thing itself, so you can decide if it''s worth the (high) price here it is.

My wife and I like coffee. It''s one of the day''s regular pleasures and we drink coffee every day. So we think our regular use justifies some extravagance. We buy good coffee. For years we used a small plastic Krupps grinder and a Krupps then Cusineart coffee maker. And it was fine. But then I took a flier on a burr grinder--way more expensive than the Krupps grinder (c. $100 vs $25 or so). And it was a revelation!! So then, with some Christmas money in hand we did research and were persuaded by a Cooks'' Illustrated review and bought the Technivorm. Wow! My idea of coffee is entirely changed. I get all that stuff about "notes of chocolate," and all that. It is just terrific coffee. What excellent wine is to table wine (and we drink a lot of table wine; so this is not about snobbism).

The whole Technivorm schtick is simple: a good pump, and keep the coffee at c. 200F until it comes out the nozzle over the coffee. Who would think it would make such a difference? But it does. The machine itself is perfectly durable, but it''s not fancy and is largely plastic, not metal. Whatever. The thermos keeps the coffee hot (if, as the instructions suggest, you rinse it first with hot water) for at least 5 hours. After that you should make a new pot anyway. It is fast, and it is quiet. It makes 10.5 cups, which is a little less than we''d like when company comes (12 is good).

The question is, and it''s a real question--is this indulgence the way you want to spend your money?

And of course, its durability is unproven--we''ve only had it for a month. But it makes wonderful coffee. If that''s really important to you, and you''ve got the money, then this machine won''t disappoint you.

=====

A couple of years later: The TV is still going strong, still making wonderful coffee. It has slowed a bit despite occasional white-vinegar treatments. Most notable: the carafe has colored on the inside and has a sort of brown glaze on the bottom. It seems not to affect the taste, but looks a bit grotty. Otherwise, still well worth the money!

I am a real coffee snob and have gone through at least 10 coffee makers and finally found this one. Was a three month wait to get it and finally got it. Makes great coffee and come out very hot. Brews very quickly. Don''t like the carafe that comes with it. Got a Nissan -Thermos to keep it hot. Everyone who tries my coffee always asks what coffee I use. It not only the coffee but the maker also. Get this, it is expensive but well worth it for those who enjoy coffee

In my quest for the perfect cup of coffee I have at last achieved success!! The Technivorm Moccamaster should be called Moccamaster-of-the-Universe. It is awesome. Easy to set up, easy to use. A child of average intelligence could use it. P-E-R-F-E-C-T coffee every time. The coffee is hot. The cofee stays hot for hours in the carafe. The coffee tastes as good as it piossibly can (see below). It is coffeemaker perfection, the holy grail, the difference between heaven and hell (owners of Delonghi-go towards the light!). It is what you want.

I have read all the reviews here and elsewhere. Let me save you the trouble. Here is the low-down:

Stupid comment 1) No "features."

-This thing is no-frills-you fill it with water and coffee and you turn it on. It makes coffee. You drink it. The end. What else do you want it to do?

Stupid comment 2) Coffee is "average" What''s the hype all about?

-This is common sense, but for those of you who are lacking in that dept I will explain. This machine is awesome, but it is not MAGICAL. If you put crappy coffee in, crappy coffee will come out. It will not make it worse, but it cannot make it better. get it?

Stupid comment 3)"Flimsiness"

-What? I don''t know what people are talking about when they say the base the carafe sits on comes off...did ya follow the simple directions? I did and mine stays together...I''m just sayin''... The parts of this machine that are supposed to come off do with ease (so no breaking it trying to remove lids, filters, etc) and the parts that aren''t supposed to come off don''t.

Stupid complaint 4) No Automatic timer.

-Whaa Whaa. How fresh is coffee that has been sitting out all night? Not very. It takes 5 minutes to brew the coffee. If you don''t have five minutes to brew coffee you don''t have enough time to drink it either. Some folks (like my husband) used to use a timer to make coffee several hours before they wake up so it''s "hot enough" when they wake up. This is how you burn coffee and is the very best way to make it taste truly awful. If you like burnt nasty swill don''t buy this machine. The technivorm makes coffee that is boiling hot. If you need it hotter than that you need help.

Stupid complaint 5) Unsexy.

-Ok, Technivorm went with superior function over superior style. Paris Hilton probably looks good in the kitchen, but lets face it-is probably pretty useless in there. I''ve never met a sexy dishwasher; have you?. Do you really care what it looks like? Has anyone ever said "why, what a beautiful coffeemaker you have there!" I doubt it. And anyway-it looks better in person than in the picture (unlike mail-order-brides and certain celebrity heiresses;P)

Bottom line: how much is 50+50+50+50+50+50? 300 right? Stop being a cheapskate!Save yourself the trouble of making 6 $50 purchases and just pony up the cash up front-it''s worth it and better for the earth than throwing out 6 coffeemakers.

Want Technivorm Moccamaster Coffee Brewer Discount?

We''ve had our Techniform for just over 2 years. While the coffee it makes is unmatched, it simply has had too many build problems to justify its premium price. Over a year ago, it began to develop a small leak in the piping inside, so if you put water in the reservoir, it will slowly leak out unless you brew right away. It was out of warranty, so we could get no assistance. Second, the coffee maker began blowing a fuse on one side of our kitchen, so we had to move it to another end with a dedicated breaker. Third, the thermos has just started to wear out, so coffee now only stays hot about 45 min compared to over 2 hours when we first bought it. Finally, the toggle switch to turn off the brewing to the thermos is quite annoying and often gets accidentally pressed down. So, while the Techniform generates awesome and consistent heated water, its shoddy build quality is sadly forcing me to turn elsewhere now.

Brita Water Pitcher Replacement Filter Save 53% Off

Brita Water Filter Pitcher Replacement Filters, 4 CountWe always kept two boxes of these on hand as replacements when we used our Brita filter pitcher (we went to an in-line because we drink so much filtered water --we''d go through 40 gallons in no time, but that is a LOT of water.) There are three "gotcha''s" on these filters to be aware of:

1. Do not let the filter dry out. When the pitcher is empty, you should refill the reservoir right away. When the pitcher is full or partly full, the bottom of the filter is in the water and keeping moist.

2. The filter needs to be soaked and flushed exactly according to directions. Some of the charcoal packing comes off in the flushing process, and if you don''t take care of it, you will have specks in the water. This is no big problem, just something to be aware of.

3. Never put overly warm or hot water through the filter.

If you follow the directions, you will have, as we did, gallons of water that cost a lot less and taste as good or better than the water you buy in plastic containers in the supermarket.

I have been using Brita filters for over six years now and I have nothing but the best to say about them. Living in a part of the country where the tap water contains impurities resulting in poor taste, at first I resorted to bottled water. Besides being hard on the old wallet, I found that some brands had a burnt aftertaste to them. So I tried Brita. I was amazed at how it improved the taste of ordinary tap water. It tasted better than some bottled water I had been purchasing and it was crystal clear. I have been using Brita ever since. The only drawback initially is the cost of the pitcher, but once you have it the only other cost are the filters that are readily available at most stores. Each filter lasts about 40 gallons, which translates into getting bottled water quality for seventeen cents per gallon.

In California the water tends to be very hard. I purchased an under the sink two stage water filtration system and thought the problem would be solved. The water still tasted bad so I bought a Brita pitcher filter. Unbelievable! It tasted so good. I think it''s because each filter has silver oxide particles mixed in with the charcoal and it softens the water very well. I wish I would have tried this filter first.

Since moving to the east coast I still find that these filters do a great job at making the water taste as good or better than bottled water at a fraction of the cost.

The Brita pitcher water filtering system is a good idea if you have problems with your tap water. Filtered water is a much lower cost than bottled water and as long as your tap is running, you can have an almost endless supply.

I live in New York City. The water quality is variable at best. The city constantly monitors water and "adjusts" additives to combat bacteria and other pollutants. Often, especially in the summer months, the chlorine level is very high.

The Brita filter takes care of the chlorine problem and removes other additives, as well.

The result is clear, fresh & pure tasting water that is excellent for drinking, cooking, beverage making and ice cubes (bad ice cubes can ruin a drink.)

Heed the instructions about filter replacement. The filters are rated at 40 US gallons each. If you exceed the recommended filter "life", you will definitely notice diminished results. This is especially noticeable with chlorinated water. The smell returns and the filtered water does not taste as good any more.

All-in-all, this is an excellent filter, but it''s no speed demon.

The only real problems I''ve noticed are with the pitcher timer breaking and the poor results if you leave the filter in the pitcher too long (beyond the 40 gallon estimated limit.)

Also, do not allow the filter to dry out once you''ve started using it.

Buying the larger packages of filters saves money and is worth it, in the long run.

I noticed that the Brita cartridges did not take out a lot of color from the water I put in. Later I found out that it was rated Class 5 on NSF''s scale by looking up the NSF site, Class 5 means 85% reduction of particles between 30 to 50 microns. The scale is a 6-step scale with Class 1 being the best. After checking with the Greater Vancouver Water District, our sediment particle size in the water averages 2.5 microns No wonder the water coming through the cartridges is still yellowish brown in color!

Item works, but not for sure how long. The unit that they shipped is the old style that goes out after about a year. Let''s hope this one lasts a little longer.

The unit they picture is the updated/newer unit that supposedly corrected the bad caps/fuse ballast problem with these, but what they sent was the old style unit. I had to get the filter up and running so installed this where the last unit that looked identical was and lasting 16 months.

Just beware that the photo they use is of the newer units, but what they shipped me was the old style unit. It was indeed new, but not the later style.

This product was exactly as advertised. The delivery was right on time and the price was much better than I could have purchased it for locally.

My only reason for the 4 star rather than 5 star rating is because the unit as manufactured is not expected to be reliable for more than 2 to 3 years. This is the information I received from our local dealer before purchasing on-line. In any event, I am very satisfied with this vendor and their service.

I inherited this purification system with my new (to me) house 15 years ago. It has always worked great (good tasting water, high flow rate, long-lasting cartridges). As you can imagine, I have replaced the filter cartridges multiple times over the years. Imagine my surprise when I open the latest set and find that the physical length of the cartridge has suddenly grown by over an inch. Fortunately for me, there was just enough clearance over the floor for the new cartridges to fit; however, it could have been a nasty surprise. So, if you have an older system where the installed cartridge bottoms are within 2" of the floor, beware.

Chapin 20000 1-Gallon Lawn and Garden Sprayer Save 41% Off

Chapin 20000 1-Gallon Lawn and Garden SprayerFor the price I expected poor quality. I was wrong. This is as durable as the other ~1gal+ sprayers that exist. The tip adjusts the spray pattern. If you want a larger sprayer by all means get a larger one if you want a small one this is it.

Great little sprayer for the money. Pressurizes quickly and well.. spray strength is perfect and consistent. Spray pattern is easily adjustable to "fan" or "stream" or anything in between. One gallon of liquid sprays out in about 1520 minutes with constant use, on the "fan" setting. I had to re-pump it about every 5 minutes with constant use.. not too bad. I tried out the "stream" setting and it works well too. Wish it had a strap for carrying, but for the price, I''ll carry one gallon around in my hand.

*** update 6/2012.... Still going strong, working perfectly five years later... use about once a week during the spring and summer. There is a spot to hook a strap onto the sprayer. I took the strap off my gym bag and use that, works great! Still happy with this purchase

First of all I didn''t get what is shown no shoulder strap just the bare-bones sprayer. That was OK. I assembled and tested it as instructions directed. Then after just 5 minutes of use the forks that lift the plunger stripped and would not open the plunger to spray. No unusual force was used, just spraying a thin fungicide on plants. Also,a minor point: the instruction folder is in such tiny type size you practically need a magnifying glass to read it. However, as usual, Amazon''s return policy is the BEST!

This is the 1st time I have used a Garden Sprayer. Wanted to post a review so others can learn from my mistakes.

1. Fill to fill line ONLY (if not when you pump it will spray out all over you)

2. Attach all attachments completely

3. Twist handle to pump

4. AND THIS IS IMPORTANT do not open anything once you have built up pressure

5. Continue to pump the trigger sprayer until you bleed the line and sprayer begins to spray.

I thought mine was broken because it would not spray as I did not bleed the line 1st. I opened the container and it like exploded all over me.

Now that I know how to use it, it works great. Nice even spray.

Want Chapin 20000 1-Gallon Lawn and Garden Sprayer Discount?

This is a good price for a no-frills garden sprayer. I''m not expecting a miracle at this price point and because of its all plastic construction, durability may be an issue. For $10, I can live with ordering a replacement if it breaks down after a 8 months to a year, but hopefully it won''t. [Product has now failed. Please see update at end of review.]

I was looking for a labor-saving way to hydrate the more delicate plants and flowers in my garden and maybe administer some plant food through foliar feeding. I had been using a spray bottle and all that squeezing was very tough on the hands, so I finally decided to do the right thing and get a sprayer. Assembly is very easy. Attach the hose to the wand, attach other end to bottle. Fill with water or your desired mix of fertilizer or bug killer, insert and screw on the pump/handle and you''re ready to rock ''n'' roll. Flow rate is very satisfactory and you can adjust the spray pattern from a single stream to a fine mist by twisting the nozzle cap. Fully pumped, the stream reaches approx 25 ft out.

Design Flaws

I don''t like that the carrying handle and the pump action are one and the same. There''s a little notch that the handle locks into when you rotate it clockwise. This secures the handle in place so that you can carry the sprayer. To pump again, you have to twist it 1/4 turn counter-clockwise so you unlock the handle. Once fully pressurized, dissipation rate is good, but I didn''t like the extra step of having to lock and unlock the handle each time. I have to set the sprayer down, unlock, pump, lock again, pick up, then spray. Another minor issue is the squeaking sound of the pump, which I don''t really mind, but just pointing it out in case you do.

A secondary problem is the length of the hose (about 3 ft.) With the sprayer being held in a relaxed position in one hand (hanging straight down like a shopping bag), I can only bring my other hand to about mid-chest height in front of me. I can''t raise my wand hand above my head to mist tall trees and objects. On mist mode, you can comfortably spray anything from ground height to about 8 ft without having to raise the bottle higher.

Thirdly, there''s no caddy or snap-in clasp to keep the wand secure when the sprayer is not in use. I am expecting a random mishap to snap the wand because of this-either someone walking by and the wand snagging on some clothing, or it being stepped on. The wand looks especially fragile and susceptible to cracking. It is this product''s weakest link. Some sort of loop for attaching a shoulder strap to wear the sprayer would also be a welcome addition.

Overall, the Chapin 20000 is easy to use, but not without some design annoyances. For what I paid, I am satisfied with this product so far.

UPDATE: DIY Strap Add-on Modification

I was able to fashion myself a strap for the sprayer out of 2 key rings and a camera bag strap. Stamped onto the vertical support vane on either side of the neck is a circular identation (visible in product blowup). You can punch it out with a screwdriver and insert the key rings, then attach a shoulder strap. I now have a wearable sprayer that leaves my other hand free for other gardening tasks. It''s a bit clumsy and looks funny, but it works.

UPDATE 8/28/10

I am downgrading this product to 2 stars because after 4 days, the spray release mechanism has now unexpectedly snapped off. I had concerns about the durability of this product because of its all-plastic construction and did not expect it to last for very long, but less than a week is unacceptable, with less than 4 gallons of use out of this sprayer. The handle is reattachable via snap pegs, but it won''t stay on due to the force of the spring in the release value. The clamp had become worn. When pushed down, the lever pops back out. Buyer beware! Not recommended.

The Holmes humidifier is the same old trick where they sell you a fancy printer for $15 and then you have to buy an ink cartridge for $39.99 every other week.

The filters are not cheap and if you are concerned about your health you would replace them every other week since they begin to smell like a stale rotting pond.

The shipment arrived quickly, but the 2 filters I ordered are not anything like the genuine Holmes HWF65 as far as their ability to wick the water from bottom to top of the filter. Turning the filter upside down so the whole surface is wet helps for maybe an hour before the filter dries out again. I bought a Holmes HWF65 locally to compare it and it works as it should with the whole filter remains wet bottom to top making the humidifier work properly. As a result, I gave the 2 filters a toss.

Bialetti Replacement Gaskets

Bialetti Replacement Gasket - 3 Cup SizeI guessed that the 3-cup version was what I needed for our 4-cup stainless steel Bialetti pot, and luckily I was right. The gasket''s outer diameter is 2.5 inches, and the ring is 0.25 inches wide.

It is the real deal, Bialetti product a package of 3 gaskets plus a replacement filter. A great deal at this price.

This came from J&R, and arrived in only a couple days with standard shipping. I''m totally, completely satisfied!

I''d give 5 stars since the current gasket has lasted forever but since Bialetti and amazon both are reluctant to provide sizing, I''m knocking it a star. I replaced mine since I now have to crank the pieces together firm enough I sometimes can''t get it loose to prevent leaks.

As far as sizing, if a person were to go to espressoparts, they would find that the:

---3 cup gasket has measurements of: Outside Diameter: 64.75mm (2.54 in.); Inside Diameter: 50mm (1.96 in.); Thickness: 2.6mm (.102 in.) that''s the vertical thickness and not the width of the gasket

---6 cup gasket: Outside Diameter: 72mm (2.83 in.), Inside Diameter: 55.5mm (2.18 in.), Thickness: 2.75mm (.108 in.)

---9 cup gasket: Outside Diameter: 80mm (3.149 in.), Inside Diameter: 63mm (2.48 in.), Thickness: 3.52mm (.12 in.)

So, if you''re under the 3, it''s probably a 1, if you''re between the 3 and 6, I guess you maybe have a 4 cup. The measurements for coffee are all silly anyway as they use a 4-6oz as a cup in order to appear to increase the volume of their maker.

-Also, my 3 cup maker takes almost exactly 1/2 cup (118ml) of water to reach bottom of the safety valve. So, in Bialetti math, we can assume that they think around 40ml is an espresso cup. Hopefully that helps.

Buy Bialetti Replacement Gaskets Now

I bought 3 new gaskets to replace the one in my Bialetti''s 1 cup coffee maker.

As many here, I ended up buying the wrong ones :-(

No biggy, since I own different Bialettis in different sizes, but definitely a nuisance.

In order to avoid my mistake, I suggest you to go to the online Bialetti''s store (Bialetti.com).

In the ''replacement parts'' section, you''ll find a very useful tool to determine which gaskets you need, based on some measurements.

Also it seems the prices are a little lower, but I''ll leave this judgment to you...

I''ve had an IKEA Moka pot for years and the two gaskets it came with finally wore completely out. A visit to IKEA for the allegedly available replacement gaskets was futile no stores actually carry them it seems so I took a chance that these seals would fit my 3 cup IKEA model. They are the tiniest bit loose, not enough to keep the pot from making a seal, and I''m thrilled to have found a source for these. I think my IKEA pot was $12 when I bought it and although that''s cheap, I hated the idea of tossing it and getting a new one just for lack of a new gasket.

Nowhere on these makers is there a # cup measure so we''re guessing. I only found this link after the fact. Now I have to reorder and have an opened pack of wrong size gaskets.
