Filtron Cold Water Coffee Concentrate Brewer

This simple device works like a charm. There''s a felt pad for a filter in the bottom. Dump a pound of ground coffee in and top it off with water(I use spring water).Wait 24 hours and pull the plug, draining the concentrate into the decanter. Mix with hot water to taste(1:2 or 1:3)and you have the sweetest coffee you''ve ever had (without sugar).It seems the hot brewing puts bitter compounds in the coffee. Keep the concentrate in the fridge. Love it.

First, let me say that this product makes excellent coffee. I usually regret drinking regularly-brewed coffee because of the acid, but I''ve been drinking this cold-brewed coffee for two weeks now and have had NO ill after effects.

The only reason I''m not giving it 5 stars is because it''s basically just a couple of pieces of plastic, and so I''d consider it fairly overpriced for what you get.

What you get is: a plastic carafe with snap-on lid, a container to put ground coffee in, a filter pad, and another container to put water in. Water empties through a small hole into the container with the ground coffee in it, and you let it sit over night. In the mornning, pop the cork out of the coffee container (on the bottom), and let the syrup drain into the carafe (through an included filter pad). That''s it. You could, if you were motivated enough, make one of these out of those x-large soda cups from 7-11.

But, the coffee is excellent. I''ve been using it to make iced coffee, and it''s wonderful. One part syrup, 2-3 parts milk, a shot of chocolate syrup and you''ve just saved yourself $5 from Starbucks. It''s that good.

It''s easy to use, easy to clean, you only have to use it once every week or so (depending on how much coffee you drink), and the coffee is excellent. And it has low acid, to boot.

(Disclaimer: I like mellower roasts of coffee. I''ve never been a fan of very strong, dark roasts and that may factor into my appreciation of cold-brewed coffee. Smooth is how I''d describe it.)

I ordered this one as a replacement to my Toddy Cold Brew machine. The filter in the Toddy was inadequate to prevent dripping during the brewing time. To compensate I pushed the plug further and further in to create a better seal. This eventually led to the bottom of the Toddy getting cracked.

The Filtron, when compared to the Toddy, is much better product. The filter is slightly oversized for the bottom of the container which creates a much better seal. Also, the fliter has a pull/draw string on top so taking the filter out after brewing is a snap (Toddy filter does not have this draw string and getting filter out is dificult). Also, the plug on the Filtron is thicker than the Toddy plug. Also, the Filtron comes with a plastic cover for the top of the unit. The Toddy does not have a top cover so I had to use a dinner plate to seal the top. Finally, the Filtron stuff is black which does not show the brewing stains as bad as the white Toddy plastic does.

However, the one advantage that the Toddy unit has (besides being less expensive) is that it comes with a large glass jug. Filtron has a narrow plastic one that I don''t like. I use Toddy glass jug with the Filtron brewing stuff. Overall, though the Filtron wins hands down and is best value IMO.

I can not state it simpler than the title of this review. This coffee is GREAT. I am single and making a pot of coffee or even a half pot of coffee most times results in stale coffee left in the pot that gets thrown out. Talk about waste. So at home, making coffee in a conventional drip maker is really not economical for a single person.

I drink probably 5 cups of coffee every day. One each morning before work, two at work, and then no coffee until after dinner which I am back home by then. So, at home three cups of coffee at best. At work, having no coffee maker, I had been drinking a double cup of Instant (I shutter to even think of it). Talk about NASTY tasting. I have tried many different brands of instant and none of them tasted worth anything. If it is not fresh brewed, its NOT coffee. While searching for a better way of brewing coffee, my main goals was easy, convenient, and FRESH Brewed taste. I was about to think I could not get these three together until I stumbled on Cold Brewed Coffee Concentrates which I have never in my 51 years ever heard of.

I decided on the Filtron over the Toddy because it seemed easier and a better thought out little system. My first cup which was drank with a certain amount of apprehension was just eye opening GOOD. I do not think I had ever drank a home made cup of coffee that good...and because its a concentrate what could be easier than mixing 1 ounce with 4 or five of water and heating it in the microwave? As easy as instant but that fresh brewed taste makes it a winner.

After two weeks of drinking this concentrate both at home and work (getting my 5 cups in a day :) I brewed a pot with my trusty ole plug in Hamilton beach drip machine and I could hardly drink the bitter cup of muddy water with an oil slick on top that I used to call a good CUP O JOE. I unplugged my drip machine that evening, and I am never looking back. I love the Filtron''s smooth, great tasting coffee.

Update: I am still drinking nothing else but coffee concentrate from my Filtron coffee brewer. Ah that cold brewed coffee. Thought I would give this helpful hint. I may be the last person aware of this helpful tidbit, however, get yourself an ice cube tray from say walmart. I chose the plastic Rubbermaid, which as luck would have it holds exactly one ounce liquid per cube. Every batch of coffee take out enough concentrate to make say eight coffee cubes...or a whole tray but that uses up 16 ounces of your coffee...at any rate put this into your freezer and when frozen, remove from tray and put into zipper freezer bag. Keep enough frozen coffee cubes for that day, when in between batches (it does take 24 hours you know) when you need a cup. One coffee cube to your cup, fill with water and heat in microwave, no stirring required.

Keurig Mini B31 Plus Red Coffee Maker

The brewer makes excellent coffee.

I am giving it only 3 stars because there is a maintenance procedure you need to do that is NOT in the user manual.

If the brewer does not drip out all the water you put in, there are TWO needles that need to be unclogged using a paper clip. The user manual describes how to do the lower one, the "exit needle". You also need to clean out THREE holes in the UPPER needle, the "entrance needle".

The procedure is shown in a Keurig-produced Youtube video called "How to Clean the Needles and K-Cup® Portion Pack Holder", steps 5 and 6. The video contains a slight error in that it mentions two holes, when there are actually three. A Keurig customer service rep told me specifically to look for three holes.

I think Keurig should put this procedure in its manual because I think every machine sold will eventually clog up, either under warranty or afterwards.

I''ve had this Keurig for a week now and for the most part I like it and it''s worked well. There are a few drawbacks, which I''ll discuss below, but so far it''s done exactly what I purchased it for make me a single cup of coffee, quick, easy and with no fuss.

Pros:

* easy to use. Streamlined is the word for this little machine. It isn''t fancy: there''s no timer, no complicated display it''s fill up the water and hit the On button. That''s it. But if I had wanted more options, I''d have bought the larger Keurig, or a regular coffee maker.

* easy to clean. Simply by the design of a Keurig, there''s not much clean up. The overflow tray that the cup sits on isn''t attached, so you can pull it out and give it a quick rinse if you need to.

*fits into small spaces. the diminutive size of this keurig means that it can fit onto an already cramped kitchen cabinet, or under low cabinets where a taller machine wouldn''t fit.

*so far it''s made good coffee. I read other reviews where they had problems with the needle clogging, etc. Cross my fingers, but I haven''t had any mechanical problems.

*amount of water is intuitive. Like other people I find the plastic water level guides pretty much useless and a little cheap looking. But, do you really need them anyway? It won''t make more than a cup, so just fill your cup 3/4 of the way full (leaving room for milk) and dump it in. If you can''t figure that out, you need to put the K-cup down and back away slowly from the machine.

*automatic shut off. after a certain interval, the machine shuts itself off. Which is good for those of us who like to make their coffee and walk away.

Cons:

* when they say a CUP of coffee, they really mean a cup. You can''t fit most mugs under the spout without removing the overflow tray first. And even with the overflow tray out of the way, those people who like to carry around X-tall mugs are going to be out of luck.

*plastic parts. From the overflow tray (which looks metallic but isn''t), to the plastic water guides, there are just things about this model that make it seem like a cheap knockoff. I guess Keurig was thinking "you get what you pay for", but hey, the mini Keurig retails for $99.00! That''s not cheap! And it''s sort of disappointing that Keurig didn''t put more quality into this machine.

*You have to follow an exact order of steps when making coffee. 1) turn power on 2) add water 2)open keurig and add K-cup 4) shut Keurig and press the Brew button. Ok, now I''m nit picking, and yes, I realize that I''M the one who can''t follow directions. Don''t know why but I always pour in the water, insert the K-cup, THEN hit the power button. And if you do that, the machine forces you to re-open and re-close the top of the keurig before it will make the Brew button available. Nitpicky? Yes. But it still annoys me every time.

Conclusion:

The Keurig Mini lacks the better construction of the larger models. And the fact that it won''t work with larger mugs is going to be a real drawback for some people. But if you know what you''re getting, and, like me, you just wanted a quick way to make a single cup of coffee, with the convenience of a machine that takes up very little space on the counter, then this may be the model for you.

Addendum: I am adding an addendum to my review. After using it for a month, I have noted one other problem with this unit. As mentioned above, unless you remove the overflow tray, you can''t fit even a normal sized mug under the spout. But when you do remove the overflow tray, there is a lot of leakage and water runs out of the unit and onto the counter. I don''t know where the water comes from, don''t know if it''s from the water tank or the K cup area. I''ve started folding a paper towel up and laying it down where the overflow tray would normally go, and this soaks up the water. Sometimes there''s less water, sometimes there''s quite a lot. Obviously, if you had the overflow tray in place, as the designers intended, this wouldn''t be a problem. However, if you want to use a mug (and not a short cup), you have no choice but to remove the tray. It''s just a bad design.

I thought of taking away another star...but decided to leave it at 3 stars because even though there are some annoyances with this unit, it still suits my needs better than the full sized Kuerig. The company needs to go back and make the spout just a little higher to accommodate taller mugs WITH the overflow tray in place release a Mini Kuerig 2.0 version, and then they''d really have something.

Got the mini brewer. Worked like a champ for 3 weeks, then stopped dispensing. Called the support, had me do the whole "paper-clip" thing. Worked once more, then the next day stopped working again....same problem. Told me to pre-puncture the K-cups, especially if they are puffing on the top. Did this, makes no difference. Apparently the top needle cannot be wet at all, or the grounds plug it up (how can you brew more than one cup every couple hours then?) Tech support on the second call, after I told them I did the whole "paper-clip" thing, said they would replace it. The replacement unit arrived, and it did not dispense either, right out of the box! I am not going to blow-dry the nozzle, or paper-clip the nozzle every morning for a cup of coffee. The coffee is delicious, but this design is ABSOLUTE JUNK. Maybe the more expensive systems are better? Mini-Brewer is not worth $9 let alone $99

When my wife decided to stop drinking coffee, I am now the only coffee drinker in the house.

I like a French Press, but for one to two cups, it is a bother, messy, and hard to get the strength just right.

Like many, I have seen Keurig in businesses, and liked their product. Shopping about, I selected this model as ideal for my use. Shopping around, and combining Kohl''s discounts, I got this for 65 dollars, plus tax.

I absolutely love this maker. Fast, easy, no big clean up. A perfect cup of coffee in 2 minutes or so, what is not to like? Plus, if you shop around, you can get K-cups as low as 50 cents each (like I did today though a sale on Amazon).

Be sure to make flat and not angular cuts on your tubing if that''s the installation method you choose. My cut was not exactly square on the line coming from the fridge. When the water was turned on I heard a bit of air escape from the fridge end of the filter where my uneven cut was. By the time I could reach to that area the water pressure blew the connection out and I had black carbon filter water shooting around the kitchen. You have to laugh. Especially when it''s my career to maintain complex hardware on a daily basis. Once I got the water turned off and the spill cleaned up I cut the tubing squarely and reinstalled. Been without issue since. It do what it do if I do my part.

I''m sure the filter itself is decent enough, but I never even got that far. The product comes with plastic quick-disconned fittings that get fastened to the copper tubing by compression. Problem is the compression nut is brass, and the fitting is plastic. If you dont'' have the threads exactly lined up, it is extremely easy to strip the threads. Which I did... Haven''t looked yet how available a replacement quick-disconnect fitting is, but my guess is not readily available. Recommend to GE that they make the quick disconnects out of brass or something more robust than plastic.

This little machine is quiet, but very effective at outing out humidity in a 11 x 11 bedroom. I use distilled water and have no white powder problem that many humidifers produce.

I absolutely love this little humidifier. I have found it humidifies a large room as well as a small one, and very quickly too. I had to turn it down for the small room, or it would have been raining!! I moved it to a large room and it takes care of it perfectly.

It''s a simple design pour the water in the reservoir and let the ultrasonic bust out the cool mist. Adjust your setting from low to high output and sit back and let the room get some humidity. Unfortunately, anywhere from 5-30 minutes into the usage, this device is going to think that there''s no water in its tank and turn itself off. You''ve got to shift it around and let air bubbles out of the bottom for it to start back up again.

You''ll continue this process until you''ve poured the water in the reservoir all over the outside of everything trying to make these bubbles escape so that the unit will resume functioning. I tried running it at low output to high output to see if that affected how long it would last before the bubbles would get stuck and render this thing useless. The output setting had no effect on it.

I returned this item. It simply has a poor design but I like the ultrasonic cool mist. You might hate ultrasonic mists. Even when it worked, the mist is so dense on some models that it immediately falls to the ground around the device and will soak your carpet within an hour. I turned on a ceiling fan though and it spread the mist around the room perfectly. Turning to a lower setting didn''t really fix this problem (unlike how it DID fix in the Crane model mentioned next).

Summary: This Hunter unit is quite bad.

Recommendation: The Crane teardrop cool mist humidifier. It works perfectly totally quiet, simple and effective design, and most importantly setting the dial to a lower output allows the vapor to go into the air as opposed to soaking your surroundings. So I don''t even need the fan on anymore! Crane is the best ultrasonic cool mist humidifier.

The second puffed out white stuff and turned our flat screen white (it wiped off, but strange). Third one worked the longest, but there is a red light and a green light to indicate availability of water in the tank and it would be red all the time when full. YOu had to wiggle the tank on its base and it would realize there was water and start working again.

I order these to try to save a little money, and received filters that were made by Honeywell, not Holmes. Not only did they look nothing like the filter in the picture (they were made of some kind of blue fiber material), they do not perform properly! With these filters, the unit emits maybe 40-50% of the humidity that it always has with every other filter I''ve ever purchased. And they emitted a strange smell for the first few days.

After experimenting with this product because this one was cheaper, I returned them, because they render my humidifier useless. The vendor did refund my purchase price and shipping cost promptly, but I of course had to pay to ship them back to them.

I ordered four of these direct from Holmes. Together, they lasted a total of 3 weeks. I have the HM1895 humidifier with the filter gauge. The first one lasted a week. The second one lasted a week and a half. The third one lasted 2 days. The fourth didn''t work at all, the gauge never got above the "change" line.

I''ve since tried a universal third-party filter BestAir Wick filter fits Holmes H65-ID. This worked for a month, which is the expected life.

Purchased this unit a few weeks ago to cool a small office room (about 120sf). I was skeptical when I bought it because I was unsure how well portable AC units could be. The unit works really well and is very nice looking. The blowers are somewhat loud but given the small size of my room that is to be expected. It''s not annoying loud. My only complaints were the poor documentation regarding the drainage. There are two drainage outlets. The upper one requires a garden hose attachment. This is only required if you are using the unit in the dehumidifier mode (which I am not). The instructions about this one were clear. The second drainage port is very small at the bottom of the unit. There were no specific instructions about this. It has a soft rubber cap. Once a day I place a shallow tin (pie tin) and drain the water. This is really important otherwise you will have a leak on your floor. Ideally you would hook up some type of small tube to drain. The only problem is that this drain is only about an inch above the floor which makes draining somewhat clumsy.

You do need to vent the unit and it comes with a good length, expandable, 6" thick plastic vent tube. I believe it stretches to 6 feet. Also comes with a window adapter.

Aside from the drainage issue, the unit seems very well made and works wonderfully. Comes with a remote control which I have not used.

WARNING-

There is NO REASON to drain the water from the bottom outlet during normal conditions.

Modern portable units REUSE the condensation water to their advantage (for evaporative cooling). The only time you would drain is if you need to move the portable system.

BACKGROUND-

My house has central air, but my computer room gets hot on it''s own, and central air doesn''t kick in since the average house temperature isn''t hot enough for it to kick in. So the solution? Get an air conditioner for just the computer room. I have a vertical sliding window, and that makes getting an affordable window air conditioner quite difficult. I settled for this portable AC.

INSTALL-

Installation of the window pane didn''t take too long, and was generally easy. Only issue is that although the pane was more than long enough (maximum length of 48.5"; minimum of 26.6"), the amount of non-adhesive and adhesive seal was insufficient to make rounds around the window, resulting in gaps for outside air to freely come in, as well as potential bugs.

Another issue is that the window pane has holes on it for screws that I''m not using (since this is meant for both vertical and horizontal window panels; so I''m not using the horizontal screws), and again, this will result in the outside air to freely come in, as well as potential bugs.

Both issues are solved by getting more seal, and/or taping it up.

Note that sound and heat/cold radiation will be more with this window pain, since it''s just one sheet, as opposed to double-panel windows, which insulate very well.

In addition to the window kit, an L-shaped metal hinge is included so that you can block the window from sliding, since you can''t lock your window anymore (for vertical sliding windows), for security.

ACCESSORIES-

The duct is of better quality than I imagined. It''s very hard, and will not crinkle easily, and can do tight turns (although this is not recommended in the manual). It however does not come with any insulating material, so you may want to get a cover for it to insulate the heat better. The duct ranges from 15" to 55" in length.

The remote is also of better quality than I imagined. It has a small LCD display with backlight that shows the current settings, and you can change any of these settings using it. I expected a non-LCD remote with just buttons on it. It uses 2 AAA batteries, of which are included.

COOLING-

It cools. Very well. Outside temperature is 70F, house temperature is 77F, room temperature was 89F while installing this unit. After about an hour, room temperature is down to 75F, of which I am happy of (and will keep around there).

This unit features fan-only mode and cooling mode, with cooling mode having two options: manual and auto. Manual, you control everything, fan speed and temperature. Auto, it controls it by itself to get it down to the temperature you want it at, and keep it there (so if it''s hot, it will blast the fan at full ''till it gets to lower temperature, then start using slower fan speed for quieter operations).

It also features sleep-mode, in addition to timers, which increases the temperature every half hour for 7 hours, then decreases it back to what you set it at (so you can save energy by not using it as much when you''re asleep).

Power consumption, in the manual, says it uses 8.4-9.1A @ 115V input, and estimates a power usage of 560 Watts for cooling.

Note: Fan is on at all times if the device is on, presumably to take advantage of the evaporative cooling, so it will never be silent as long as it''s on. Be sure to take this into account if you''re planning on using this in the room you sleep in.

I bought this unit for my 180 sq ft home office which needs more cooling power than our central unit can deliver. The room has 3 large east-facing windows which receive full sunlight for at least 4 hours each morning in the summer. It also contains a workstation-class laptop computer, 2 22" monitors, an external hard drive, and several pieces of networking hardware.

With the doors closed this room easily reaches 85 degrees by noon each day in the summer (even with the window blinds closed), while the central AC maintains the rest of the house at 78 degrees.

The first full day I used this unit I left it off and the office doors and blinds closed until 10 AM when the room had reached 84.6 degrees. After running full-blast for 1 hour the room temperature had dropped to just 78.9 degrees and never dropped below 78 degrees until the windows were shaded.

If you have a medium-sized home office this unit will provide more than enough cooling power to negate the effects of your electronics, but if you don''t already have central AC you will need a bigger unit.

Keep in mind that the 5000 BTUs of cooling provided is enough to balance out the effects of about 15 100W light bulbs (each bulb produces 341 BTUs of heat per hour). You can calculate the wattage of other electronic devices by multiplying their power source voltage * amps (the wattage is sometimes provided by the manufacturer in the user manual).

Also keep in mind that this is a single-hose unit which creates negative air pressure in the room where it operates. This causes some air to be drawn from other parts of the building to balance the pressure. If you need a portable unit as your primary cooling source you should look for a two-hose unit that maintains a more neutral air pressure.

This A/C works great in my bedroom. It''s usually about 75-79 in my room when I get home from work and when I turn the unit on it gets the room down to 67 in about 5 minutes. My room is about 20x20 which would make it 400 sq ft. The unit is pretty quiet compared to a regular fan. I would highly recommend this unit.

We got this for my daughter''s room, which gets hotter than most of the house, despite having only a eastern and a northern exposure. On a moderately hot day, in the 80s, it will keep her room comfortable. But if it''s in the 90s (when she needs it most!), it just can''t keep up. When the temperature was in the mid to upper 90s, the best we could get in her room was 84. And this is a very, very small room (less than 100 square feet). Maybe I''m expecting too much. But sometimes the air blowing out doesn''t even feel cold.

On the positive side, it''s reasonably quiet (for this type of unit), it doesn''t make strange noises (as these units often do), it''s simple to operate and easy to install, and it''s certainly a lot better than not having any AC at all. But if you often have days in the 90s or higher, I would recommend that you get an AC unit with a higher BTU rating, even if you are only cooling a small space. Conventional window air conditioners are not allowed where we live (so I''m grateful for this type of AC unit), but if they are an option for you, they are much, much more efficient than portable ACs.

If you only use this kettle to decorate your counter and use it infrequently, it might provide years of so-called "service". Otherwise, expect the worst. I thought I loved this kettle.
