Clear Flow KFF-301 Long Life Disposable Kitchen Faucet Filter

Clear Flow KFF-301 Long Life Disposable Kitchen Faucet Filter, White
  • No cartridges to change! Lasts for up to 1 year (300 gallons).
  • Electronic status light tells you your filter is working
  • Switch from filtered to unfiltered water
  • Save up to $600 compared to buying bottled water

We have pretty bad tasting water in Las Vegas, and we''re pretty much forced to buy 5-gallon containers of purified water for straight drinking water. We were going through so much, that I looked into getting a charcoal-based filter system for water for our tea, coffee, pets, and plants (all of which benefit from having minerals in them). I was pretty horrified to find how much the other famous brands charge for their filters and containers and such! Then I found these. They use the same technology as the others, but are so much cheaper! So I bought one.

Well, it''s eight months later and the green light is still on (meaning it''s not time to change) and we run a lot of water through it. It''s a solidly built device, with a strong connector (and multiple steel fittings come with it), and I really couldn''t be happier with it. I wouldn''t recommend it for sinks whose faucets are already low down into the sink, or it might get in the way of cleaning pots, but that''s true for the competitors, too.

One thing that I prefer about it over the competitors is that the whole unit is disposable, not just the filter. While as a rule I''m an obsessive recycler and environmentally minded person, in our house we do not have a water softener and all the water fixtures and appliances gum up and corrode quickly. After 8 months, this thing is no exception, though I am happy that some extra tightening stopped any leaks and it still works great, but I''m happy I''ll be starting fresh with another unit in a few months, instead of having to live with a crudded up unit with a new filter, as I would with competitors.

Do not buy this item. Mine went right away. It only showed a green light for a short period, the rest of the time a red light to no light at all. I had much difficulty locating the manufacturer, so I finally called up Clear Flow and the item and found a site I could write to. Here was their response.--

I am sorry to inform you but we are a retail and service company in Canada and we do not manufacture any drinking water systems. This is not the first request for information that we have received, As to this date we have not been able to locate this manufacturer.

Clearflow Pumps and Water Treatment Limited

Your Water the Way You Want It ... Safe, Clean and Crystal Clear. This was my letter to them -

I purchased your Clear Flow KFF-301 Long Life Disposable Kitchen Faucet Filter, White in February of this year from Amazon.

It didn''t work right when we put it on. I ran water as the instructions stated but no green light showed up. The red one did. After a few days I did get a green light. Shortly after that it went to red. Not much longer after we finally had a green light stay on, then the red light came on and stayed on, and now there is no light at all. For the capacity it is supposed to have for filtration, I sure did not get that.

I have been searching for how to get in touch with you, until I now went to Amazon and called up Clear Flow on a search.

I have had many water filters, but this is the first one to do that. It has been installed correctly by my boyfriend who installed all of the others.

I sure did not get my money out of this product, yet it gets great reviews.

Can I get another one, or do I have to buy another one, but it will be a different brand?

Very concerned and not happy.

I bought my first clear flow filter six years ago at a local hardware store, where I could put the specs side by side with Brita, Culligan, Pur and found the contaminant reduction on Clear Flow to be the best in terms of removing contaminants that concerned me. The water tastes great, too.

This is my fifth Clear Flow filter in six years, so I get a bit over a year per filter. That''s pretty minimal plastic to landfill compared to Brita and other filters that take "refills". The whole Clear Flow Filter isn''t much bigger than a Brita Filter cartridge, which is also a plus in terms of not taking up room at your kitchen tap.

Since I have been a loyal user of this filter design for a number of years, I know there was a period a few years back when they made an arrangement with Brita and sold this filter, by retail anway, exclusively through Brita instead of under their own name. All you fans of the Brita disposable water filter-the Clear Flow KFF-301 *IS* the "Brita" disposable. Brita sold it for a much higher price, though. Close to double, if memory serves. I wonder a bit if Brita might have been pulling a Microsoft-esque tactic, trying to buy influence over innovative competitors and then just marketing the competing product to fail. I for one am glad Clear Flow didn''t sell out to Brita, reclaimed its own product, and continues to make a great little alternative filter that is priced really well.

I can''t find these filters at my local hardware store anymore, but I''m glad to find them here on Amazon.

Want Clear Flow KFF-301 Long Life Disposable Kitchen Faucet Filter Discount?

Lasts for over a year and then just throw it away. Too bad these things are so hard to find. Needs better marketing.

I buy this clear flow filter every year, although this time I bought two, infear of them being discontinued. I dont know what i would do if this happens. I have tried other brands and they pop off the faucet, so i have continued to buy this one for years now.

I recommend this to anyone.

Cuisinart PRC-12 Classic 12-Cup Stainless-Steel Percolator Save 54% Off

Cuisinart PRC-12 Classic 12-Cup Stainless-Steel Percolator, Black/StainlessI do not understand what has happened in the coffee maker industry. It seems as if every coffee appliance I buy fails. This one is no exception. I bought this one only because most of the reviews praised it. Now I am sure that the reviews are phony and must be posted by the manufacturer. There is no control over the time of percolation which for whatever reason has been designed to be too short. The coffee comes out weak especially if you try to make less than 12 cups, the water just doesn''t make it through the strainer for less cups??? The manual suggests using 20 spoons for 12 cups of strong coffee. At this rate I will essentially be using double the coffee grinds to make the same amount of coffee as I did with a much older Faberware I had and the coffee is still weak. The new faberwares are just as bad as everything else manufactured these days. The reviews and the item description also touts that this coffee percolator has a glass knob. This is an outright lie, it is plastic!!!! I was initially pleased with the design although I feel it is made with a lighter guage metal than it should be. I would gladly pay double for this product if it worked. Don''t buy it, it is another coffee maker dud!!!!!

Here''s my take on the whole coffee thing. If you are a coffee guru, then you are going to go through all the trouble it seems to take to make the perfect cup, and this review is a mute point, or you are going to go to Starbucks and pay for the perfect cup. Most people who make coffee at home and in the morning (time permitting) are like me.

Here''s my ideal coffee scenario:

I believe that buying my favorite high quality whole beans (Kenya AA), grinding them myself (coarsely, so they don''t fall through the metal filter), and using the method I believe is best (the nostalgic percolator), is the perfect way to brew. It''s my own preference: 1/3 nostalgia, 1/3 good beans, 1/3 convenience. They say that percolating coffee is burning beans. I and many other would disagree. I wake up grind my beans fill them and some cold tap water into the percolator. I wait 10 minutes while listening to that wonderful sound and smelling that great aroma!!! PERFECT!

For the GURUS, this may seem like heresy, but for me its the best of all worlds.

This model has, so far been great, 4 stars. The "glass knob" is plastic, whatever! Liars!. I''ve been brewing at the 6 cup line (water and beans) for 5 months at 4 to 5 times a week. Still hot and still consistent. It brews the same every time. This consistency over time is what I think will make or break this product. If it cools down a bit I will clean it. If it gets worse then I will be less than satisfied. If it fails before five years then I will be less than satisfied. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes to make MY AMOUNT of coffee and how black I like it. I cannot set the heat or the brew time (it''s all automatic), but the coffee comes out very hot (not burned) and very dark. The only thing I can control is the amount of both water and coffee. I have learned what amounts I like. Other times may vary because of the amount of water and coffee used.

Don''t go by what the instructions say go by what is best for you. The amount of coffee you get and the amount it says is one cup WILL BE DIFFERENT. Who cares. Make it the way you like it. This will take time to learn, but it will be best in the end. Every brand percolator is different, to bad you can''t have a trial test before buying.

So far so good...

UPDATE...............UPDATE...................UPDATE 7/12/2010

Sometimes I like to go back and read my old reviews. To get a sense of things, and see to see if I still feel the same way about the purchases I''ve made. Or if the purchase turned out to be a lemon. Or just add something I missed or found new and interesting. Or edit a mistake. Whatever.

A lot of people are giving this perco. a low rating. By the way, mine still works perfectly fine after 2+ years. Still **** (Stupid plastic knob!).

You are cleaning it after every use, aren''t you? If you don''t like cleaning it, it will eventually go bad sooner than you think. So go back to a plastic drip machine if 100% convenience is what you want.

You are unplugging it after all of the coffee has been poured, aren''t you? If you don''t it will probably mess up the heating element. That''s my guess.

I''ve noticed that when I first started using it, I would miss-align the spout tube with the heating dome located on the base. I''ve done this occasionally. All I got was hot, brown water. So make sure you align the spout tube properly.

I''m starting to not like the curved black base. Because, when I fill it up with water from the tap I sometimes bang it on the sink. It feels like I''m gonna knock it off if I''m not careful.

It still brews fine, maybe a little cooler then at first; but its still H. O. T. HOT.

I''ve noticed that darker brews (french roasts) give the best results, although bean-quality is probably more important than roast.

KEEP IT CLEAN BY WIPING IT OUT AFTER EVERY USE USING DRY PAPER TOWELS!!! IT WILL LAST FOREVER.

That''s it.....

I had written a glowing review for the PRC-12 Percolator because it produced a great cup of coffee and heavenly aroma. Now, months later, this product resides in a local landfill and I won''t buy another Cusinart product ever again.

It made great coffee right up to the day I found coffee all over the counter. The leak was tracked to the plastic bulb which broke off when I gave it a gentle twist. I contacted Cusinart Customer Service, emailed a copy of my Amazon receipt and was told they would be happy to provide a replacement lid w/bulb as soon as I could give them the serial number which I was told is on a sticker underneath the pot. Naturally, on my unit, the serial number sticker was missing. What was worse, when looking for the serial number, I found that the base had cracked and warped from the heat of brewing coffee. One more call to Cusinart Customer Service and they once again told me they would be happy to provide a replacement as soon as I provided the serial number which in this case was non-existant. Without that precious serial number Cusinart wouldn''t lift a finger to help. The Amazon receipt was a worthless piece of paper when it came to dealing with Cusinart.

Due to poor Customer service at Custinart, I''ve decided to continue to buy from Amazon but I will no longer buy any Cusinart products.

I bought this to replace my ancient aluminum stovetop percolator, which did make great tasting coffee but the aluminum/alzeimer concerns worried me, plus the thing was stained and almost burnt through from heavy use. Anyway, I did a fair amount of research and this Cuisinart seemed like the best electric percolator available. I thought an electric would be easier to clean (they aren''t). The main point I didn''t consider is that you can''t control the percolating time on these things. That''s pretty much the whole point of percolating coffee; If you want stronger coffee you want to be able to percolate it for a longer time. An electric percolator shuts off automatically after it''s short pre-timed brewing cycle. I tried a variety of beans and ground settings (and added more coffee to the basket to compensate), but it was still weak. The end result here is watery coffee, just slightly better then what you get from a drip machine. What''s the point? I will admit that this percolator is well designed, pours nicely, has a heavy gauge basket and keeps the coffee very hot. That classic percolated taste just isn''t there. If you love the rich taste of percolated coffee like I do (it''s the best!), you really need a stove top model. I''m getting a Bialetti!

Carbona Color and Dirt Grabber Save 7% Off

Carbona Color and Dirt GrabberI used it in a load containing a red dress that bleeds like crazy even in cold water. Other items, pastels, even whites remained the color they are supposed to be. Cloth is thick and hefty and absorbs dyes like mad. Just Wonderful. Ad has one error. There are NOT 30 cloths. THERE IS ONLY ONE CLOTH per box AND ITs SUPPOSED TO LAST THROUGH 30 WASHINGS.

Product doesn''t contribute any fragrance to the laundry.

Product doesn''t alter the feel of laundered fabrics.

Drop it in the washer and leave it there. Easy as that!

Personally I do let it dry so it doesn''t mold and smell from being kept wet inside a closed washer, perhaps it has a chemical protection against that I don''t know, not giving that outcome a chance to arise.

I really like both Carbona''s reusable Dye Grabber cloth AND these smaller one time use Color & Dirt Grabber sheets. Both products not only help protect against color bleeding, but allow any dingy white and light colored fabrics to gradually become whiter and brighter over a succession of washes. There appears to have been some past confusion as to which of the two excellent Carbona products were ordered/shipped, but my box of 30 one time use sheets arrived exactly as pictured and described.

i used to use the Color Catchers, but this seems to do the same thing at a cheaper price. I only wish that i was better at keeping track of how many times I''ve used it, since it supposedly only works for 30 times.

I can wash loads of white and colored clothing without the chance of coming out with pink underwear. New jeans and white things come out of the wash perfectly. I don''t know how I lived without this product. And don''t worry about chemicals! This product is made of lamb''s wool which attracts all the free dye in the wash. Quilters use it to get excess dye out of the cloth before cutting it. It even works with prior color bleeding. I use it in every load.

I love this shower head. I purchased it after using one in a Marriot Hotel (wentworth by the sea) in Newcastle NH. It does work a bit better if you have fairly strong water pressure, but is still good with moderate pressure. It was better at the hotel, because their water pressure was a bit stronger than the pressure I have at home.

Found one of these shower heads on sale as a ''warehouse deal'' at a very low price.

Nice, heavy chrome head. Love the self cleaning feature, although the "soft" is pretty useless, unless you''re trying to stand directly below it, like a small rainshower head. I did remove the limiter, which helped a bit.

BISSELL Big Green Complete Home-Cleaning System Save 29% Off

BISSELL Big Green Complete Home-Cleaning System, 7700I was very hesitant to purchase this vacuum because of the bad reviews. Glad I didn''t listen and went for it. This vacuum DOES NOT have a suction problem! I am fairly confident the issue is people don''t read and comprehend the user manual. The problem comes down to TWO fill lines on the water tank. The fill line on the front (which is easy to see) is the water line when you must EMPTY the water tank. The real water fill line for normal vacuum operation is on the back of the water tank and is harder to see. The water fill line on the back is about 1-2 gallons less water than the one on the front. I did an experiment and the more full the water tank, the less suction power (makes sense as more water in the tank means it is harder to pull air through the system). When the proper amount of water is used (or even a little less to cheat) this thing has great suction!

Biggest positive:

1 Water filtered vacuum is awesome. This allows for almost zero dust being expelled from the vacuum. No longer do I get "allergy nose" after I vacuum for an hour or so.

As much as I like this product, I can''t give it 5 stars.

Drawbacks:

1 The canister is pretty large and heavy. I could not imagine my grandmother using this vacuum.

2 Wish the wand was a little longer or adjustable. I''m 6ft and need to bend a bit.

3 The lid on the water tank doesn''t have a latch, if the canister ever flips over you are going to have a mess on your hands.

This machine is great for hardwood floors, tile floors, flat carpeting, cleaning upholstery, steam cleaning rugs/carpets and auto interiors....when used correctly! 1)Never rely on "air-driven" turbo-brushes, regardless of the make/model! 2)Read instructions thoroughly and make sure when vacuuming to use the water fill-line in the back of the water filtration container 3)You can remove the HEPA filter in the front of the machine if you like; this will create more air-flow, thus increasing your suction and cleaning ability/power! (the water in the container and the hepa filter in the back of the machine are more than enough filtration!)

4)If you know you will be vacuuming around baby changing table or anywhere body powders are applied, add 3 tablespoons of mineral oil to the water because baby powder/body powder cannot get wet....the oil will "grab" the powder and keep it in the water filtration container! 5)Never use more cleaning solution than directed when doing "wet" cleaning! 6)Even without the turbo brush, this machine will probably pick-up more dirt than regular vacuums because it never loses it''s air-flow, which is the true ability to clean/pick-up! 7)You can add a few drops of fragranced oils to the water, this will freshen the air while you clean! 8)When done using machine....rinse/dry and wipe down the water filtration tank with alcohol or vinager before storing! 9)IMPORTANT: IT IS VITAL THAT YOU CHANGE THE WATER WHILE CLEANING WHEN YOU NOTICE THAT THE WATER IS FILTHY, ALSO, YOU WILL MAY NOTICE THAT YOU ARE ABOVE THE WATER FILL-LINE WHEN IT IS FILTHY DUE TO INCREASED MATTER IN THE TANK....THIS REDUCES ITS CLEANING ABILITY, IT ONLY TAKES A COUPLE OF MINUTES TO FLUSH THE FILTHY/DIRTY WATER AND REFILL IT! 10)You can use this machine to clean the air in your home....when finished cleaning, change the water, add some fragranced oil if you like (we like a few drop of eucalyptus.)and run without any attachments on the intake in each room for 10 minutes once a week, this will greatly reduce the amount of dust in your home, reduce allergy symptons and increase indoor air quality!!!! Sometimes before we have company, we like to place the machine in the center of the house with some Lavender fragranced oil and run for 15 minutes....our guest always comment on how nice the air is in our home!:) Hope this helps!

I was really excited about this because of the multi-function use. At the same time, I was skeptical. Our little dog likes to pee in small places on the carpet, so we needed good carpet cleaner that would deep clean these areas.

The carpet cleaner works very well. Both the large cleaner extension and the handheld spray and suction the water, which most others do not do. It was a decision between this and the Hoover Agility. The Agility does not seem to have a sprayer on the extension hose.

When it comes to the vacuum, it''s not that great. The suction is only good enough for area rugs. The carpet extension has a air powered brush that stops working on normal carpet and it only cleans the top surface debris.

So, if you want something for hardwood and deep carpet cleaning this is great. Just don''t try to replace a regular vacuum cleaning with this.

I don''t know why, but I obsess over my tile floors. I have to have them clean and there can''t be streaks, spots or dirty grout. To me, it never seemed like a good idea to throw water on the floor, swich it around until dirty, then let it dry. The floor is still dirty. I knew there had to be a better idea. I searched all the stores, then online. I found this machine almost by accident, I think. And you can only get it online. It''s the perfect price point. Thank you Amazon -and thanks to the people who took the time to provide reviews. I had my machine within a couple days.

The first day I used it I knew I had found what I needed. It was immediately obvious that this machine is superior for cleaning the approximately 1800 square feet of ceramic tile in my house. The grout was cleaner, there were no streaks, no spots and, best of all, the effort I expended to clean it was much less than that stupid mop and bucket.

Not only that, I was able to clean my chairs, two couches, and the carpet in the rest of the house. The dirt that came out of all my furniture made me both feel dirty for living on them but also a lot healthier now that they are so much cleaner. I also cleaned the carpet and other fabric areas in my cars with the same great results.

Now, I''ve only had this machine for a few weeks so I don''t know how it''s going to last -especially since I plan to use it a lot. But it seems well made and sturdy. It''s not a professional machine to clean tens of thousands of square feet in heavy use buildings. But I found what I need for my 2,400 sq foot house.

I highly recommend this machine if you have a similar situation to mine. Bissell, you could market this machine a little better so more people can benefit from it. But thanks for a great product. You have my endorsement.

I bought this after a Hoover Steamvac died. I tried a Dirt Devil Easy Steamer and hated it. I work in hospitality and am used to canister style steam cleaners. This is about as close to a commercial unit as you are going to get, just without the huge size and high cost. it does a fantastic job. Not sure what is going on with the bad reviews. I have had this for several months now and use it quite often with animals in the house. It works perfectly every time. It has even gotten out stains that I thought were never coming out! I would definatley recommend this carpet cleaner.

Pentek CBC-10 Water Filter

Pentek CBC-10 Water Filter, 0.5 Micron
  • Specifically targeted to reduce parasitic cysts like Giardia, Toxoplasma, Cryptosporidium, and Entam
  • Extra dirt holding capacity
  • Works great for residential, food service, commercial and industrial applications
  • Also makes an excellent polishing filter

These filters are typically used with under sink or reverse osmosis filters. It''s a carbon block (one solid piece) vs granulated so you don''t have routes for unwanted stuff to make it between the chunks of charcoal which can happen with the granulated type filters. We''ve been using these particular filters for years to filter our drinking water at the kitchen sink. Removes sediment, nearly all (over 99%)chlorine, and reportedly stops many harmful bacteria, cysts, etc. if you have those issues to deal with. Of course these filters shouldn''t be used as your only defense against known polluted water.

The filters are fairly heavy and brittle and I wasn''t happy with the packing of my shipment. If they bang together in transit they *will* crack or have the end caps break off. I''m trying Amazon as my previous supplier wasn''t packing them well for shipment and they were getting damaged. If Amazon can''t get it right I''ll move on.

This is my first time dealing with whole house filters (we recently moved to this house). When replacing, the bottom ring of the filter fell off, it''s still in the housing and while the filter is inside it''s kind of in place, but when I have to replace the filter again, it''ll take some force to remove that ring from the bottom of the housing.. In this house we have well water, so the pressure is lower, and I don''t know if I''m right, but I think that after installing this filter the water pressure is even lower.. Before this filter the housing had a sediment rope-like filter, so may be there is a difference in pressure. I don''t have any problems with water taste, so I guess the filter is doing its job. In my area there are a lot of calcium in the water, so I still get a lot of calcifications inside my tea kettle.. I do have a water softening system and trying to figure out if its working right.. it''s my next project )))

This was a great filter in the fact that it greatly reduces dirt, bacteria, etc. However, it also greatly reduced our water pressure. We couldn''t run water in two places at once. You couldn''t even flush the toilet and wash your hands at the same time! If you are looking for very clean water and don''t care about pressure, then this filter will work for you. We just value our high pressure showers too much!

Jura ENA Micro 9 One Touch Automatic Coffee Center Save $0.05 Off

Jura ENA Micro 9 One Touch Automatic Coffee CenterIf you don''t plan to make use of milk steaming, my original 4 star rating stands, and I might even bump it to 4.5 stars. But the milk frothing IS a big part of the selling point of the machine (otherwise, you could buy a much cheaper, much smaller unit for just making espresso/coffee). And they still didn''t get it right this time, although it IS better than the previous model. They completely removed the horrible steam wand from the previous ENA version, and incorporated the FrothExpress accessory into the new models, as the sole milk frother. The problem is that the heat is just not there for the (barely) steamed milk. I can literally put my finger under the stream of milk before it goes into the cup, and it''s BARELY warm. Warm, not even hot. In frustration, I just got my dedicated milk frother from the garage and started using that instead. Very disappointed that they couldn''t get this right, since both my wife and I are heavy latte drinkers. IMO, Jura should scrap this FrothExpress deal altogether, as it has been shown to not work over several iterations, in different units. Add in a traditional steam wand, but one that doesn''t try to kill you (as in my previous gen Jura). I guess there is a reason that so many other companies just use a basic steam wand instead of this high tech voodoo gadgetry to do the same thing. I really hate to, and hesitated to knock off a star for what is otherwise a spectacular piece of machinery and technology, but I just can''t overlook this big of a flaw.]

Get comfy, and grab a coffee this is going to take a while. :D I''m going to split this review into three parts, since it''s long (this is a very complex machine, with many functions, and expensive to boot, so I think it warrants the length):

First, how this machine performs on its own. Second, how this new model compares to the ENA 5 in their classic line (in case someone is wondering what the differences are, and since the Jura website doesn''t really do any kind of comparison for you). And finally, some "pro" tips, since I have used one of these machines for more than a year, at least three or four times a day, to make all kinds of drinks, and am very familiar with all the little ins and outs. These are so-called super automatics, but there are plenty of tweaks and tips that are not immediately obvious, that can seriously affect the way your drinks come out.

********************

1. On its own:

PROS:

Small (compared to other superautos)

Aesthetically, awesome

Fast (both in delivery of the final product, and in usage)

Built in conical burr grinder, with SEALED compartment for beans

Jura brand superautos seems to have much better reliability than other brands (again, used one for a year, daily, and never a problem)

Delicious output (with some tweaking). Even default output is surprisingly good.

Lots of options to make drinks customized to your taste

Potentially replaces a LOT of stuff on your counter top bean grinder, coffee maker, espresso maker, hot water pot, milk frother, beans container

CONS:

Small RELATIVE to other Superautos, but this is still a big machine (not really a con for me personally, but if you are seriously low on counter space, just consider the dimensions since the "micro" is a wee bit of a misnomer IMO.

STILL not quite as good output as a good barista. :D Pretty darn close with some settings tweaks though

Cost (obviously, but then again, go price a very good conical grinder, with a very good espresso machine, and you will easily be close to this cost)

Requires some significant and frequent cleaning to keep in top shape. This could be the Achille''s heel for some, but you MUST clean these per instructions, if you want to keep your machine running smoothly. I really think this is where the complaints of reliability of superautos comes from people not cleaning as often and as thoroughly as they should (it IS a pain, but worth it IMO)

Cost of filters and cleaning materials you have several recurring costs here, and due to the amount of cleaning required by these machines, it''s nothing to sneeze at: Clearyl filter (for the water tank, which I personally do not use more below), replace milk hose every 6 months, descaling tablets (unless you use the Clearyl filter), cleaning tablets (everyone needs these)

lack of an actual temperature setting. It would be nice to dial in EXACTLY how hot you want your steamed milk and/or coffee/espresso/water. As it is, you have just two settings, and even the hottest setting is not as hot as I would prefer personally. In fact, I am adding this bit several weeks after writing the initial review because sometimes my lattes come out just "warm" (usually the first one I make, but what am I supposed to do, throw that one out?!) Not acceptable in this price range IMO. I even considered knocking off a star for this, but I am going to keep working with it to see if I can somehow overcome that issue (will also call Jura to see what they say). Stay tuned.

2. Relative to the previous gen model (ENA 5)

When I was shopping for a superautomatic coffee machine last year, after much (and I mean MUCH) research on the subject, I settled on the Jura ENA 5, which is still being sold today. With the exception of one major problem with the steam wand (you can see my review of that model here () on Amazon), I have really enjoyed using it on a daily basis (at least two latte''s a day, plus espresso at night, for the past year or so).

First off, the "micro" designation, due to this unit being 11% shorter than the older models. That translates to about an inch and a half shorter, and when I put the two units side by side, my wife just laughed, because the overall difference is so minimal, but I had told her (before unboxing) that this was a mini version of the one we had.

The footprint of the two units is exactly the same, the width and depth is the same, etc, only that the new model is slightly shorter. Now if you have very little space between your counter and the bottom of your cabinets where you want to put the unit, this could be significant, so YMMV. I ordered this unit, without really reading the details about the size, thinking "hey, a mini/micro version of the ENA I have at home could work in my office" but this, like all superautos, is a large countertop appliance (yes, relatively small considering the sizes of other superautos, but still big if you are not familiar with superautos).

Overall, I definitely prefer this new unit, and it has nothing to do with the fact that it is marginally shorter, but with the many, small changes (and some big ones) and tweaks they have made to the user interface. In almost every way, it is superior to the normal ENA line (again, at least to the 5 model that I have), so IMO, if you are considering the two product lines, I would definitely recommend this newer Micro model, even though it likely costs much more.

In terms of similarities, the most important features of any espresso-based auto machine IMO, are the quality and pressure of the pump and the type of bean grinder. Both of these models have a 15 bar pump (plenty), and both have conical burr grinders, so the output of the two models should be very similar, and it is. The differences, though seemingly small individually, add up to a much slicker, more polished, and ultimately more enjoyable user experience with the new Micro model.

Here are the main differences between the two:

The ENA 5 has a much ballyhooed "dual spout", so in theory you can make two drinks at once. However, the reality is that the amount of coffee ground is the same as if you were making one cup, so to me, this is a useless feature (selecting TWO CUPS on that model simply forces the unit to the STRONG setting, and doubles the water amount, effectively watering down a regular shot). The new Micro model does not have dual spouts, but again, not a big deal IMO since the feature on the original was a bit deceptive anyway.

The awesome height adjustable spout has more travel in the new model, so now you can fit taller mugs underneath. The new spout can go both lower, and higher than its predecessor (a common complaint for the older ENA was that travel mugs would not fit underneath). A big ol'' travel mug will not likely fit under even this new taller spout, but that is asking too much IMO...some of those things are monsters!

This new unit is made in Portugal, the older ENA was/is made in Switzerland, if that matters to you (interestingly, the new model "feels" better made somehow, somehow tighter in operation).

The whole system of creating milk based drinks has changed, and for the better IMO (this is the biggest difference between the new model and the old). With this new model, you can simply press one button for the type of drink you want, and as long as you have your milk hooked up, that''s all you need to do to produce a latte or a cappuccino. Love it. With the older ENA, it was so complicated (and dangerous, at least using the unpredictable steam wand (aka hot metal bottle rocket of death)) to create a latte, that I ended up buying a separate milk frother, which kind of defeats the purpose of these superautos.

Overall, I highly recommend this unit, and there are only two small nits (and 1 big nit added in later) I have to pick about the new model. One, is that the clear plastic cover over the LED display seems to make the display blurry in comparison to my old ENA. This could just be specific to the unit I got though, and I doubt anyone would notice unless you were directly comparing the two models. Second, the new dial that you press to "select", is quite a bit harder to press, but perhaps it will become easier over time/use. I actually prefer the dial on the older model, as it both turned more easily, and was easier to press. I feel like I am fighting the dial and select button on the new Micro ENA. Biggest fault currently, is that the milk output is not NEARLY as hot as it should be. Interestingly, I only noticed this lower temperature output after several weeks of use, so I am thinking it is something that can be adjusted, or fixed or cleaned maybe. It is a pretty big deal though (the milk is coming out JUST warm on the first prepared drink, not even hot), so if I can''t resolve it, and have to resort to a standalone frother again, I will be disappointed (and possibly take star away)

TIPS AND TRICKS (not necessarily specific to this model, but probably all ENA''s):

EXTRACTION AND FLAVOR SETTINGS

I find that Jura "cheats" in some ways, to make the drink making process as simple as possible, with as few steps as possible, at the expense of the quality of the drink (a decision that many people would probably agree with since most buy these machines for convenience over all else) The good news is, you can EASILY adjust settings (which are saved), to optimize the way the machine works, and IMO results in a much, much better end product. I personally prefer my espresso and resulting coffee drinks to be strong, so I set all FLAVOR settings to strong, immediately. On my previous ENA, in searching for the strongest possible coffee, I also turned the bean grinder settings to the finest (something I have not yet done on the Micro, but will play with later) which in theory should give you a stronger shot.

On to an example of flavor tweaks: the default latte. You CAN simply push the latte button, and in about a minute, you have a beautiful looking, layered drink. The problem comes when you drink the latte, because it will most likely be bitter and weak (for MY tastes, YMMV). Why? Because instead of a multi shot process (again, to save on steps I guess, and for simplicity sake), Jura''s answer to more coffee = more water through the same grounds. That results in over extraction, which makes things more bitter and watery than they should be. The easy solution to this is to reduce the amount of water (I think the default latte water amount is something like 3 or 3.5oz or even more IIRC) that the machine uses in the process, to a more normal 1.5 oz (typical shot) or 2.0, then if you are like me, and prefer a stronger latte, you just hit the "espresso" button after the latter completes, and voila...double shot latte, and not over extracted. Of course this makes the machine work harder, and longer, and will require you to dump more grounds and water, more often, but still worth it to get a decently strong drink IMO.

Related to that is their "coffee" setting. Jura''s answer to making "coffee" is to simply run a ton of water through a tiny bit of coffee grounds, again, resulting in some seriously bitter coffee (which they call "crema coffee" I believe, and I call "''tastes like someone ground up an uncoated aspirin in my coffee'', coffee'') The preferred way to do this, IMO, is to simply make an Americano, which is one or two shots of espresso (at 1.5oz ea or maybe 2oz at most) then simply add some hot water from the hot water spout on the ENA, amount according to your taste. The difference in taste and smoothness (and flavor) is significant, and I really don''t understand why anyone would want to drink the default "coffee" output when it''s so simple to make an Americano with this machine. I fully understand this sounds like snobbery, but guess what, you are considering paying $1400 for a coffee maker let that sink in, oh newest member of the coffee snob club! :D

TEMPS

You definitely will want to heat up your coffee mug before using these machines, especially if you are making a milk based drink, and especially if you are making the FIRST drink after powering on the machine. So put that handy hot water spout to good use for your first drink at least, and just run a few seconds of water into your mug, and let it sit for 15 secs or so (then dump it out of course). Amazing how much of a temperature difference that simple act makes (Edit: but this is still not enough see above notes about temps with milk based)). Also check to make sure the settings in the various drink menus are set to the highest temp setting (iirc, all the defaults are set to that anyway, but doesn''t hurt to check if you temps seem low).

WATER

I find the water reservoir to be annoyingly too small, considering I often make 3-4 lattes every morning, depending on who wakes up when. One very easy way to help with this problem, is to simply not use the Clearyl filter in the tank. That thing displaces a LOT of water, and IMO is unnecessary if you are already using filtered water (like from your fridge). This also eliminates the cost of the filters, BUT does add the cost and pain of descaling (which you don''t have to do if you use the filter). It''s a good trade off because you only have to descale rarely (much less often than CLEAN for instance), and the cost of the descale tablets compared to the filter is significantly lower. OTOH, the small size of the reservoir forces you to constantly put fresh water in the machine, so I can see why they might have designed it that way (and they do stress to use fresh water, daily).

While this sounds like some kind of cheap skate workaround (which I am normally all about with other products), I do HIGHLY recommend that you actually pay attention to the cleaning messages when they appear, as well as to use Jura cleaning products only. Why? These are extremely high precision machines (for coffee machines at least), and high precision machines require constant upkeep to perform well, and stay running. If you read reviews of superautos (not just Jura, which have better reliability records than most), you will see a lot of complaints about reliability, and I feel certain that the reason lies with users not doing the proper, required (and frequent) maintenance. I understand completely, because it''s a big pain, but do you want to some small, but annoying regular maintenance, or do you want it to break down and have to send the monster in for repair? Easy choice IMO. Also, after doing a full "cleaning" or descaling (to a lesser extent), there is a noticeable increase in taste quality.

*********************

Final thoughts:

Think of these Juras (and really all superautos) as Lamborghinis, which are notoriously high maintenance divas. You just have to be anally pro-active about their maintenance and upkeep, and you are rewarded with a marvel of high performances engineering that goes like Superman. It won''t hurt to whisper sweet nothings in its ummm...steam holes/speakers. On the other end of the scale is maybe your typical Bunn commercial coffeemaker, and in car terms....maybe a VW bus. Basic, frumpy (or retro hipster cool, depending on your age), but simple, and very few parts to break down. It can stay on, without being cleaned or maintained...for seemingly years on end, 24 hours a day (and of course your coffee tastes like that too). You can (and should) verbally abuse these machines on a constant basis, and they will continue putting out their swill, day in and day out, unaffected by your lack of respect, love or maintenance (hell, don''t even bother cleaning the pot it''s going to taste the same anyway! ;D )

Feel free to ask any questions in the comments section, as I know I had tons when I was researching which superauto to go with. I have also tried pretty much every coffee and espresso maker out there, to be able to compare, if you are interested how these stack up. From the AeroPress, to Italian moka pots, to normal auto coffee makers, to espresso machines, capsule based, pod based (three kinds!), french press, single servers...you name it, I''ve tried it.

In summary, I can easily, and highly recommend at least this particular superauto, for anyone in my situation (which is Dad of a young family, where lots of caffeine is required by Mom and Dad, and pronto, every morning), or anyone that prefers convenience without sacrificing too much quality. I previously did the manual routine every morning, in which I would transfer coffee beans from their container, to a separate burr grinder, then scoop out the grounds, turn on espresso maker, steam the milk with the wand, tamp grounds just so with a specific tamper, pull a shot, knock out the old grounds, and repeat multiple times to make two large lattes (two shots each). The resulting time required, and mess from so many machines, and grounds and water and beans everywhere was too much, especially as I usually had the baby with me while I was trying to do all this. Yes, you do sacrifice some output quality with superautos, but for me, at this time in my life, the trade off is well worth it. IMO, if you use good, fresh beans (this is so key), you can easily beat Starbucks (which I am not a big fan of) in terms of taste, but you will still not outdo a barista in a non-chain atmosphere that knows what they are doing. I can make VERY GOOD lattes (I would rate a Starbucks latte as POOR) with either of my ENA superautos, but I can not make a GREAT one, like I could when I used the separate machines. For what it''s worth.

A mere 12 minutes passed between the second it took me to open the Jura box to the moment I took my first sip of REALLY delicious latte macchiato. That included running the hard water test. If you are looking to save time, you can''t get much faster than that. The Jura ENA Micro 9 is very fast, great looking and (most importantly) it makes a DELICIOUS espresso and espresso drinks. You could add a pair of googly eyes and name it Javabot 3000 to really feel like you are living the sci-fi future we all wanted as kids.

WHAT CAN IT DO?

Once set up, I made two shots of espresso, two latte macchiatos, a cappuccino, a cafe crema and poured hot water for tea before I needed to refill the water tank. These were all done using the Jura factory presets for each drink. During this run of 7 drinks I didn''t have to stop to empty the knock box or drip tray; so if you have a dinner party going you could serve everyone in under 10 minutes with no interruption. A note about using ground coffee bypass shoot: unlike other automatic Jura machines that accept 2 scoops, this Jura ENA Micro only accepts one scoop.

HOW DID THE DRINKS TASTE?

All drinks were nicely hot and full of rich espresso flavor. They tasted like a skilled human made them. The simple shots had very nice crema on their surface, the latte macchiatos were well delivered with color striations as you made your way down the glass. The cap was as good as I get in a cafe. The crema cafe was good and the water for tea was instant, no waiting required for the water to come to temperature. I should add that all drinks were hot but immediately drinkable; if you want a lava-hot milk drinks you should try a Jura machine that has programable temperature options since this unit does not.

DRINK TIP:

When you run through the menu to see and sample the amounts the machine presets deliver, I recommend using a large squat pub-style glass (an "old fashion"), that way you can see what is delivered and not run the risk of overflow. I overflowed on my first latte macchiato because my glass was too small, but it ran into the grid-topped drip tray so no immediate action was needed, I just cleaned it up later. After you are familiar with quantities find tall and skinny glasses to hold your latte macchiatos since the striations look best in a tall and narrow cup in comparison to the cappuccinos.

WHAT ABOUT THE FOAM?

I used to pull espresso shots at a cafe in college and am impressed with the density this machine can accomplish with the foam. It is also instant, no waiting for the milk to get hot: I poured a glass of whole milk and sat it next to my machine, inserted the tube and that was all I had to do. Espresso and milk come out the same adjustable tower spout, so you don''t have to move your glass for milk drinks. I do not have other milk in the house to try, but have read elsewhere that lower fat milks also foam up nicely. After you make a milk drink, the unit will auto rinse when you turn it off, so make sure you have a cup under the spout when you do. It is very easy to disassemble and rinse the hose and spout.

FOAM TIPS:

To deliver the beautiful striations on the latte macchiatos you need to have the adjustable spout tower just above the rim on your glass, too high and the momentum of the pour will simply mix your drink below the foam cap. The foam this automatic machine delivers is firm and thick.

A fun thing for your cappuccino: Since the espresso comes out from one tube (not two) located in the front of the spout tower, you can "draw" with the stream of espresso on the foam layer if you fancy making a little doodle to make your hubby smile.

I use a 16 oz insulated tumbler for my milk, I just took out the straw and inserted the milk tube -easy peasy! Make sure your mik source is lower than the intake valve on the spout tower. See my pic.

HOW DOES IT LOOK?

The design and casing look good in person, it is encased in hard plastic with a matte silver finish, the drip tray and spout tower have chrome-look accents. The top is shiny black that feels like lucite and is very easy to wipe clean. Despite all the plastic it feels solid and weighs over 20 pounds I think, if it were cast in a metal shell you''d need two people to lift it. The lines of this machine are unobtrusive and modern looking, the entire unit has a forward angled profile, so it looks like it is perched and ready for your order. It is a tad bit smaller than my bread machine (9.06 x 12.72 x 17.52 in). I am 5''3" wearing 1" heels and can easily reach to top controls, read the angled prompt screen, adjust the grind selector and access the ground coffee shoot without problem.

IS IT HARD TO USE?

NO. I have two small children under 3 years old, so if I can get it going in 12 minutes with my scattered brain you can probably train your cat to use it. The rotary control dial lets you toggle though set up and drink customization very quickly. Each drink has its own button The display is color coded to display red green or yellow depending on status so you can tell from a distance if it needs your attention or is running as intended. If the only thing keeping you from drinking 5 lattes a day is time and money, then this machine could be a dangerous!

WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT ESPRESSO?

In college I worked in a decent cafe making espresso drinks for 2 years. Since then I have made pretty dynamite espresso in my vintage Vesubio Via Veneto stovetop espresso maker; that maker takes a lot of time, weekend use mostly. During the week I was using French press and cold brew before now.

DID THE JURA ARRIVE IN ONE PIECE?

I was impressed with the packaging since the box had a huge kick in the side of it but the machine was pristine and undamaged, the tennis Hunk on the box wasn''t bad to look at either. I don''t think it even wobbled an inch within its packaging on its entire way to my house.

Another nice touch is a card inside the bean hopper, it says that there may be a bit of coffee residue on the grinder from testing the machine before shipping it to you. I was so happy to see that card, it meant I probably didn''t get a lemon with any added hassle of trying to replace a faulty unit, I wish more companies did that!

OVERALL IMPRESSION?

The speed that the Jura ENA Micro 9 instantly delivers my order is really amazing considering how good they taste. This is a great help when trying to get out the door in the morning for work or making guests coffee drinks. I drink a lot of coffee and am so excited that now I can drink a lot of GOOD coffee that is a breeze to make. I am glad that my tiny kids will have a kooky caffeinated mama from the get go, rather than the sleepy morning grumperpuss waiting for water to boil.

I want to disclose that I received this machine for review at no cost, but this detail does not affect my review by swaying it to be more positive than it should be. After using this machine I can say that I would be saving up the money to buy one if I had to. As time goes on I will update this review to reflect any changes that occur with my experience using the unit.

UPDATE 12/31/12:

Last month, after only 5 months of daily light use, I awoke to an ERROR 8 message on my machine and it would not work and the error would not clear. I called customer service and was happy to get EXCELLENT attention to my problem. They emailed me an overnight shipping label and I dropped it off at a UPS store that afternoon. They emailed me the next day to let me know they had it. Three days later they overnighted it back to be and it is good as new. All of this service was provided to me free of charge since the unit was so new, they said it has a full warranty for 2 years. This entire process was so painless and fast I was amazed. It stopped working on Thursday and it was delivered to me at 9:00 AM on Tuesday in time for my morning java fix. It is nice to know that a machine this pricey comes with excellent service! I waited to post this update to make sure the machine had been properly refurbished and it appears to be in great working order. I will update should things change; but it is STILL a 5 star product.

Buy Jura ENA Micro 9 One Touch Automatic Coffee Center Now

As I write this, I am sipping and enjoying a lovely Caramel Macchiato. Made at home. Simply and quickly. And it''s quite yummy. I LOVE this coffee pot.

It has been said by some that the ability to make a good cup of coffee (in a traditional coffee pot, anyway) is a "gift." And quite frankly, it''s a gift I''ve never had! I can make only marginally okay coffee with a traditional plaugged in coffee pot. Now, I CAN manage a mad-good cup of coffee with the Bialetti 6800 Moka Express 6-Cup Stovetop Espresso Maker Bialetti coffee pot I picked up in Italy a few years ago (mine is slightly smaller than this one, which is 29.95). It also is easy to use and consistently performs, but it (the Bialeti) has some draw backs: you are committed to making an exact number of expresso shots and the pot is just too-darn-hot to immediately open and reload. It''s quick enough, but not as quick as the Jura. (The Jura is insanely superior to all the other electric cappiccino makers I''ve tried in my lifetime.)

I love my Jura. It''s like my favorite coffee shop just moved into my house. How cool is that?

The 136 page manual made me nervous: then I realized that it was nine languages, and only about 20 of those pages were English. There were also diagrams. All in all operation was pretty simple to figure out. Language options include: English, Swedish, Italian (yay!), Spanish, Portugese, German, Russian, and French. The Jura Ena Micro 9 itself is as multilingual as it''s manual. The display can easily be set to any of the languages.

The proof is, of course, in the coffee, which is quite delectible. (And from me this may be an accomplishment.)

Eleven Positives:

1) Excellent coffee.

2) Sleek appearance.

3) Ease of use.

4) Multilingual.

5) Clear instructions.

6) Easy to clean.

7) QUICK coffee.

8) Versatile settings (traditional coffee to expresso, to cappiccino)

9) Programmable water levels.

10 Grind variety. Uses grounds or beans, and will grind beans to five different grind sizes.

11)The best and fluffiest milk foam. Yum.

Three negative

1) Kind of tall. I (and I am very short) actually stood on my Firm Fanny lifter step to see the display during set up! I wish the controls were on the front rather than the top.

2) Also, the spout, sadly, does not lift up *quite* high enough for my tall travel mug. (Solved by holding the cup at angle.

3) It''s rather expensive. (It seems...quite indulgent to spend 1399.95 for a coffee pot! But if you make daily coffee shop trips, it is perhaps going to balance out....)

Having owned this for two days, I cannot comment on its longevity. I will say that the water filters are suggested to be replaced every 2-3 months. The milk tube suggested to be replaced every 6 months.

If you drink A LOT of coffee, I would recommend this. It will suit a wide variety of taste buds in your house. However, if you drink it rarely, save your cash and try the Bialeti.

Read Best Reviews of Jura ENA Micro 9 One Touch Automatic Coffee Center Here

Yes, I know. Five star review....am I just blinded by the sheer beauty of this? Nope. I''m a tough one to impress, so I''m going to explain it all for you. Please note, there are some other reviews that are also glowing...some by ones who have worked as baristas, or owned a similar product before. They have some great advice, so read them all.

From me, you are getting the rookie/newbie version, and I admit, I was overwhelmed at first. For me, it was very hard to reconcile the price they ask for this, given it costs more than my fridge and stove combined. So, for me, this would never happen in real life. But here it is, and here goes:

FIRST OFF, THE PROS:

*it fits well under a cabinet, only needing to pull it forward to fill the water tank in back. Four inches shorter than my Cuisanart coffee maker (photo with mixer shown to give you an idea on size).

*all the instructions are simple in the manual, they are explained very easily. Just start with the beginning and you''ll be up and running in ten minutes tops. For me, it helped to go to the JURA website to watch the videos on using it. Roger Federer is on the website too (a perk!). The website offers suggestions for using up old coffee grounds, recipes, etc.

*changing anything is easy, from dumping grounds out, removing milk nozzle, altering finished cup size...all easy to do, even if you didn''t have the manual, you could figure it out.

*to make a cappucino or machiatto, there''s no switching the cup from milk nozzle to coffee...the cup sits for both and there''s less risk of getting burnt this way. Also, with the buttons on top, not on the front, I don''t worry that my kid will climb up and push buttons.

*if you want a bigger cup of coffee, you can adjust anything. It does make hot water for tea instantly, and regular coffee too. Besides the whole bean section, you can add a decaf powder if you want to make another coffee (but only in the powder holder).

*the grind is adjustable, as is the heat level.

THE CONS

*this isn''t a big deal, but the machine is obsessed with clealiness. It''s a bit OCD...constantly prompting you to do a rinse cycle. At first it annoyed me, because after two coffees one rinse seemed excessive. But it takes less than 15 seconds to rinse, so....not a big issue once I got used to it. It also prompts you to clean it after any milk drinks for your own safety (and yes, they do get gunky even in one day).

*the water needs to be filled up often, maybe once every three regular size cappucinos. Easy to do, but still. If you leave the water filter out of the water reservoir(it''s optional), you could probably have it store one more cup.

*the base where the cup sits to await the coffee is fake chrome covered plastic. Why not the real deal? Not sure but this portion felt cheap while the rest felt solid.

*for the price, I wish JURA would have included an insulated container for milk to connect to. I believe it''s about $60 on the website to add. I just use a small cup (you''ll see it in photos...any cup will do) for milk and there''s a plastic tube that connects and just sits in your milk container. I rinse it daily (easy) and put it away.

*the adjustable height for the nozzle isn''t as big as possible. In the photo with the red mug, that is the highest level it will go, which means tall cups or travel mugs need to be tilted to work.

Two things you may want after you get this: clear mugs (so you can see the levels of foam and coffee) and if you''d like, flavorings. Smart and Final sells flavorings that coffee shops use for $3.99 each. A bit in each cup can add a flavor.

I''ve attempted to insert some photos: orange mixer and red cup are mine. Yes, my tile is ugly. I hope you find this helpful.

EDITED TO ADD: after several days of usage, I have gotten the coffee making down pat. It''s quite easy and there''s really very little to do other than dump the grounds, add water, and rinse the milk tubing and nozzle each day. It takes just a few seconds. I also found that leaving a pretty cup out on it all the time helps when I have to rinse the machine, I just keep it there and hit rinse and it catches it and I can dump it and replace. I never really thought it would be this easy to use.

Want Jura ENA Micro 9 One Touch Automatic Coffee Center Discount?

It was hard to imagine that this machine, as small as it is, less than half the size of my first Jura machine, could be capable of making a cappuccino. However, it made a much better cappuccino than that machine ever did, with a fraction of the mess and cleanup. It makes many of the same coffee drinks as my Jura Impressa J9 One Touch TFT Coffee Machine does. It does most of the things the large Impressa machine does, but it has a much smaller footprint on my counter and it makes a lot less noise.

For the past two weeks, I have made espresso after espresso, cappuccino after cappuccino, latte after latte, ENA vs Impressa, side by side and still have not been able to see or taste any difference between the two machines, not in the output anyway. There are fewer choices of coffee drinks to be made with this machine, but 99% of the drinks we make are the ones that can be made with this machine.

Some ~small~ flaws caused by size:

1. The water tank is at the back of the machine and thus not fill-able, at least without risk of overfilling, while it is in place on the counter;

2. The lid lifts straight up; so, for those of us who would risk over-filling it anyway, it is impossible to put water in while the tank is in place;

3. The lid lifting straight up at the back also makes the water tank difficult to remove if there is either anything on your wall above it, or perchance a cupboard;

4. The handle for the water tank is plastic and the lid has a lifting action that will surely cause the plastic parts to break sooner or later. This is probably not much of a problem, except for changing the water filter, as it corrects the problems #1 and #2. Oh, and that would probably fix problem #3.

There are other flaws of course, like having to refill it and empty it much more often; however at this size and this price, it is an amazing machine.

We have had illy issimo Coffee Drink, Mochaccino and illy issimo Coffee Drink, Cappuccino on the boat all summer because my husband banned my large Jura from the boat. The counter just isn''t big enough. However, I have finally been able to find a place to safely stow this machine on board. No more cold coffee in the morning and no more messy French press coffees. It is superb!

Thermax AF2 Home Enviro Water Filtration Vacuum

Thermax AF2 Home Enviro Water Filtration VacuumI purchased the original AF1 from a direct sales person many years ago. At that time, I paid a little over $2,000. What seems an outrageous price for a vacuum cleaner, it really paid for itself over the years. The suction is always strong and I have never found another vacuum that works as well at picking up dirt, hair, food, etc. True, I haven''t had the need to purchase many others, but the ones I have purchased to supplement the Thermax were always a disappointment. The latest, a Hoover Wind Tunnel (highly rated by CR Magazine) was no comparison in performance.

A few years ago, Thermax offered the AF2 at a significant discount to current AF1 owners. I paid a little over $600 without the water extraction option. I didn''t need it since the old AF1 was still working after 20 years of weekly use. The AF2 is identical in performance to the AF1. The difference is a more compact design and an easier to clean recovery tank system. This is the part most people may find too cumbersome and not worth the hassle. You can''t just open the top and throw out a dust bag or empty the dirt into the trash. The recovery tank must be emptied into the toilet. Depending on how many people (or animals) with long hair reside in the house, hair makes cleaning the various tank parts a little more difficult. I usually take the tank outside and rinse off all the parts with a hose and then let it dry outside. A couple foam filters also need to be rinsed once in a while as well. The main filter is the water.

Since the dirt and dust are trapped in the water, there is very little dust in the exhaust. The is real big plus for those with allergy problems. The vacuum even comes with various oils to place in the tank to scent the exhaust while vacuuming. You can also use the tank as an air cleaner by setting it in the midde of a room and letting it run without the hose attached. Other vacuums, with filter bags or bag-less, always leave a musty odor behind after finishing a room.

I''m not so sure I would pay the $2,400 that Amazon has priced for a new one, unless it came with all the options and accessories. The bottom line is, it vacuums better than anything else out there and is very reliable. The only downside I can see is the price and having to clean the recovery tank after each use. There may be lower prices on the net somewhere, but you''ll have to live with the hassle. I have for many years and it was definitely worth it for me.

I am sorry to be so negative, but I have neverbeen so negative about a prduct. I purchased it thinking it would be a good carpet cleaner.

I have a Miele vacuum and no way does it compare to the miele. It is aso bulky and complicated. The carpet cleaner is terrible.

The suction on the vacuum as well as the carpet cleaner is very poor.

All it does is spray the water well. The suction is so poor it does not pick up the dirt and water. Then the hose broke. This broke on the second attempt to use it.

At this point it has set here a year and I just want to send it back fr it takes up space.

I have owned the Thermax AF2 for almost 3 years now. I love it. It keeps the pet hair from flying around (with 2 border collies we have a lot of hair) while I vacuum. Cleans the air at the same time. I am now shopping for the attachment for the steam cleaner. I cannot imagine anyone not loving it.

I bought one of these from Thermax about a year ago. I love the vacuum''s performance. You can maneuver the wand/hose into places you can''t ever get to with a regular upright vacuum (under beds, etc.) It really gets a lot of dirt out of the carpet and off the floor (comes with a hard surface broom tool) you see it when you examine the water tank. The water tank is easy to clean. However, the tank''s water gets dirty quickly and requires a few to several changes while vacuuming your house (even if you vacuum once a week) which is a hassle. The hot water extraction/shampooing feature works well too (I have small children who make lots of spills). The manufacturer has good customer service. However, they now sell for over $2600 (I paid $860 for the vacuum + $250 for the vacuum plus shampooing kit and a few months later their price more than doubled). I wouldn''t buy it for that but the $800 range was more reasonable.

I regularly change my Water Filters. As usual I ordered ahead of change time "Pentek P-250A Under Sink Water Filter Set" on Amazon from "Water Filters Direct, LLC."

When I opened the plastic wrap to install the water filters, black activated charcoal powder poured out onto my carpet! The end cap was either damaged or was not properly sealed. It was just held by the shrik wrap.

Unfortunately I found out that the product was defective after 30 days. (Water cartridge was not due for replacement!) It looked ok from outside, as it was tightly shrink wrapped. I called Amazon customer service at 1(800) 201-7575. After a long disucssion and lots of hold time, they agreed to refund, as it was a defective part they supplied. I argued that as its a replacement cartridge I could not ascertain if it was in working order or not until installed. I could not install unless the old part was due for change. When they credited the amount I paid, they deducted shipping charges! I am not happy about it, as it was not my fault they sent a defective item.

Lesson learnednever order a consumable ahead of time, from Amazon. If it is a defective product, Amazon is going to sock you for the mailing charge, even if the product is defective.

Also I am never going to buy anything from "Water Filters Direct, LLC." as I never encountered a defective water filter in my life before this!

The filters were good. But there was a lack of information about which of the two was stage 1 and which was stage 2. I called the vendor for support and got the answer. (Stage 1 is the gray one with impermeable sides, stage 2 is the white one with webbing.)

GE Osmonics Desal TFM-100 Reverse Osmosis Membrane

GE Osmonics Desal TFM-100 Reverse Osmosis MembraneIts works great and my water tastes great. The product seems to produce the ideal amount of water for my family

This is review of "Non-Watts Premier Brand RO Membranes" like this one OR "Dow Filmtec Residential RO Membranes". While it should work as described, DO NOT USE on Watts Premier WP systems (i.e. WP-4V, WP-4, WP-5). The WP systems are the one-piece manifold systems from Watts Premier.

This does not have the built-in Check Valve or Brine Seal inside the white plastic tube of the RO Membrane. Without this Check Valve or Brine Seal, water from the reservoir tank (when full) will back flow to the RO membrane and damage it, and waste water.

This back flow or reverse flow will happen when your reservoir tank gets full. So basically, you will be wasting water as the water trickle will not stop. When I tested it, water continued to trickle out of the reject water outlet tube even when my reservoir tank is full already (it should stop when reserve tank is full). The water coming out is at a much slower rate though, but still plenty enough to raise your water bill since the water trickle will continue 24 hours a day.

The Sharper Image EV-HD15 Cool Mist Ultrasonic 1.6-Gallon Humidifier

The Sharper Image EV-HD15 Cool Mist Ultrasonic 1.6-Gallon Humidifier with Clean Mist TechnologyI recently purchased this humidifier at BBB and so far it is doing a good job. I wanted something that was quiet and didn''t require replacement filters and I got it.

When adjusting the humidistat you can definitely see a change in the amount of mist on my machine. Many reviews talk about the demineralizing tablets and not knowing what to do with them. If you read the instruction manual it tells you at the end what to do with them. Fill your tank and drop them in. Depending if you have normal water you replace them every 3 months or so and if you have hard water they may need to be replaced more often.

If the light on the front of the machine is green you have enough water, if it turns red that means you need to add more water.

We purchased this about a week ago from BBB and so far we love it. It''s worked perfectly, no issues, and it actually makes our rooms humid which is very hard to do in AZ. This is the 5th humidifier I''ve purchased in the last 4 years and it is by far my favorite. Also because it has two tanks, it can be running while you are re-filling which comes in handy if you need it on 24-7 and not just at night. It also doesn''t make a sound. AND I''m sick of paying for and changing filters on all my other humidifiers. They are pure gross and filled with dust and bacteria.

As far as the other reviews and the de-mineralization tablets, I didn''t even read the instruction manual, I assumed it works like all other humidifiers and you just drop them in the tank. However, it would be nice for Sharper Image to tell you that (they do tell you this on the replacement pack tho).

This unit is truly function following form. My biggest complaint is that the two tanks leak after a few refill''s before placing them back in the unit. Also the dial used to control the humidity level either produces a lot of humidity or none and its not very accurate.

Pro''s: this device shoots mist high into the air with its vertical spout.

This is a quiet unit which can be filled with water and left alone for quite some time before needing a refill.

Important side note: the floatable filters that you drop separately into each tank need replacing after 30 to 40 fills.

I am awful picky when it comes to humidifiers. I am sure I have returned or donated more than a dozen in the past 10 years after testing them out and finding complaint with each.

This Sharper Image humidifier is the best I have ever owned. We bought it in November 2009 as humidifiers are recommended during pregnancy. This humidifier is super quiet. We leave it on all day in our family room and I can''t hear it at all. With it being winter, we generally have it on the highest setting and yet we only have to refill it every other day. It has two tanks that last 36 hours. When it does run out of water, a red light shows and it shuts itself off. There is a night light on it. And it makes breathing so much easier my sinuses are great. I highly recommend it.

I actually just purchased this humidifier (from BBB) after my year-old Venta Sonic broke down. I am positively surprised about how quiet it is. I quite do not understand other reviews saying that there is no instructions for the demineralization cartriges please see page 10 of the small booklet called Instruction Manual and Warranty Information...

I did not like the fact that the unit was so bulky and had the vent directed upward only (my old unit had the mist coming out of the unit at about 45 degrees angle which I though was better). But I do like that it has two separate water compartments and no parts of the humidifier that can get damaged (oscilator, e.g.) are not accessible.

Overall, I am very satisfied and hope it will serve me long...

The Life Span for This Filter Is Aprox 1-2 Months. Universal Works in Most Alkaline Thermos.for Best Results Replace Every 30 Days !!!!!!!!! + a Free Power of Nature Energy Negitive Ion- Anti Rad- Energy CardI bought this after doing a couple weeks of research on the benefits of alkalized water. And after sifting through all the products and claims by manufacturers this seemed to be the most cost effective with regards to the initial purchase and subsequent filter replacements. When I say it is an excellent improvement on water I mean that not only the taste but the feel of it is just amazingly smooth and refreshing. The day I got the thermos I did a blind taste test with my roommates on their opinion of which tasted better, and if they could pick which was which that would be even better. I used samples of our tap water, distilled water, and the alkalized ionized water. All four of them, after tasting all three, then gave me a unanimous vote that sample number two (the youth water) seemed "softer" to the palate, and proceeded to label all three correctly. I have to say I was skeptical at first because I always thought water was just water and their could be no discernible difference, but I have completely changed my mind just in the three days I have been drinking it and I look forward to experiencing the full range of benefits this product has to offer. I''ll write another review after the thirty day trial they recommend.

I might have liked it if I had received it, but it never got to my home. I have to see it, at least, to provide a good review.

I also live in the DC area, and it''s funny to me how many of the reviews are from DC people. My problem was a little different. There''s a lot of iron, or iron bacteria in the water. It was staining my bathroom pink/red. Condensation would build up on the bathroom walls from the shower, and then red streaks would run down. It looked like the Amityville horror house! Also, the bathroom seemed particularly prone to mold, which required a lot of diligent cleaning.

I wasn''t sure if this shower filter could solve problems like this, but I figured for $40 it would be worth it to not have to clean the bathroom constantly. (also it was kind of embarrassing to have guests over). Well, sure enough it stopped the red buildup. What I wasn''t expecting was it also stopped the mold in it''s tracks. I guess their was something in the water feeding it? I don''t really know. With the filter you''re supposed to turn it over after 6 months, and then after a year replace it. Well, for me it only lasted a total of 6 months, but I think that might be because I have such terrible water quality. It''s still absolutely worth it and I highly recommend!

This fitler works great. It has made a big difference to our skin and hair, and so I am sure our overall health as well. I have one in each shower in my house.

However, after only two months the nut which joins the shower head to the filter unit broke on both. I contacted the seller who asked me to send them to him to see. I did all the way from Oregon to Rhode Is. at my expense. He looked at it and told me I must have smashed it somehow and that was that. All I asked was for a new shower head, as the filter was fine. I not only had to spend my own money to send the item back, but I then had to go out and buy new shower heads! I was very unhappy and so I cannot recommended buying from this seller.

Same here, doubted it would work but wanted to try and bought a set of cholrine test strips along with it to check. Anyway, this actually does work!

The showerhead arrived even before the test strips and I could already breathe the difference in my bathroom, and started to be a believer.

After checking the results carefully though, I determined that it works very well for free chlorine, but NOT well for or in the presence of chloramines.

If you have high chloramine content, this isn''t ideal for you. Vitashower is better in that case (no it''s not a scam vitamins really are used for real dechlorination, look it up online).

Even if you have chloramines and it doesn''t remove everything, it does make the water feel better, so whatever else it is doing to the water feels good.

-SHORT STORY... IF YOU''RE IN A HURRY --

The short story is that I''ve been using these filters for over 15 years and have no issues with them. I don''t shower in chlorinated water without one of these installed. I take mine all over the world for this reason (I am an avid traveller).

In my experience this product works well. No complaints. What''s more, my brother who has eczema finds his skin is 100% better when he uses these filters (I loaned him one and he wouldn''t give it back!). His skin clears up when he uses this filter.

Below is my full review which will interest you if you wish to learn more about these fiters, and surrounding issues with shower water, their usage, etc.

--THE CHLORINE ISSUE--

Chlorine is a known carcinogen. A little research on Google and PubMed will reveal that to you. If you''re checking out this product, you most likely already know that chlorine is toxic.

It is estimated that about 80% of the chlorine the average person takes in from water is via showing. So those people avoiding chlorine in their drinking water for health reasons would be wise to use a shower filter.

I''ve been using the Sprint filter for over 15 years (not the same one!! They last a long time, but not that long!! I wish).

I am very sensitive to chlorine. I can''t shower, for instance, in places like L.A. because they bathroom soon smells like a gas chamber to my sensitive nose.

This filter does not remove the chorine. Rather it binds the chlorine at an ionic level and effectively neutralises it.

--ABOUT KDF & CHLORGON FILTER MEDIA-(pasted from a website about KDF)

Kinetic Degradation Fluxion (KDF) is a high-purity copper-zinc formulation that uses a basic chemical process known as redox (oxidation/reduction) to remove chlorine, lead, mercury, iron, and hydrogen sulfide from water supplies. The process also has a mild anti-bacterial, algaecitic, and fungicitic, effect and may reduce the accumulation of lime scale. The KDF redox process works by exchanging electrons with contaminants. This "give and take" of electrons converts many contaminants into harmless components. During this reaction, electrons are transferred between molecules, and new compounds are created. Some harmful contaminants are changed into harmless components. Free chlorine, for instance, is changed into benign, water-soluble chloride salt, which is then carried harmlessly through the water supply. Many heavy metals such as copper, lead, mercury and others, react and bond with the KDF medium''s surface, thus being effectively removed from the water supply.

KDF process media will reduce or remove chlorine, iron, hydrogen sulfide, lead, mercury, magnesium, and chromium, and may inhibit the growth of bacteria, algae, and fungi. Redox media remove up to 98% of water-soluble cations (positively-charged ions) of lead, mercury, copper, nickel, chromium, and other dissolved metals. While removal rates depend on a number of factors, more than 98% of chlorine is removed by KDF in home water treatment systems (90% in shower water filters due to high flow rate).

With Sprite filters a substance called Chlorgon is also included in the KDF media, to increase the temperature range for effective chlorine removal.

--THE BENEFITS I NOTICE--

This shower filter from Sprite Industries makes a very noticeable difference to the levels of chlorine (and related toxic gases, such as chloroform) in the bathroom atmosphere. I got my first one 12 years ago when I moved to a town in New Zealand that was having issues with farm animal run-off getting into their water supply. They temporary solution was to greatly increase the level of chlorine treatment in the water. The water smelt so strong just washing my hands was a complete turn-off. I installed one of these filters and the problem was solved. No more toxic chlorine smell when showering.

I travel a lot and I take one of these filters with me every where. I install it where ever I go and need use a shower. It is usually very easy to remove the existing shower-head by hand, and screw this one on. I don''t find that plumbing tape is necessary.

My hair is nicer when I use filter water, and needs washing less often.

My skin does not get dry when I use filtered water. Otherwise I tend to get dryness on my shins, elbows, knees, and face. I don''t experience this when using this filter for my showers.

My brother has very sensitive skin. He tends to get eczema. His skin easily gets red, thin, broken, and itchy. This problems essentially went away after I gave him one of these shower filters. He couldn''t believe he had suffered so much for so many years, and the answer was so cheap and simple.

--TIPS and TRICKS--

Many modern showers have a hose that goes from the wall to a shower head that sits in an adjustable bracket. The idea being that you can lift it off the bracket by hand and shower any way you like. Usually, however, where the hose screws into the fitting on the wall is too close to the wall for the shower filter to screw in. What you can do is screw the hand piece off of the other end of the hose and put the filter on between the hose end and the hand-piece. Due to the way the threads go, the filter will be around the opposite way from usual, which is fine as the filter is bi-directional.

This trick also works well if the shower is above a bath tub and you wish to have a chlorine-free bath. You can install the filter as described above, but just leave off the shower head (or take it off) when you want a bath. The shower hose can dangle down into the bath tube and fill it (assuming it is fitter at a low enough height, which they usually are).

If you are going to take this filter with you travelling I recommend taking a small adjustable spanner/wrench or vice-grip with you. I''ve sometimes come across shower heads that I can not remove with my bare hands. Trying to find a wrench in the moment can be next to impossible, or at least a nuisance. One like this one should do the trick: Vice Grip 4WR 4-Inch Curved Jaw Locking Pliers with Wire Cutter or Crescent Adjustable Wrench 4 Inch (I am assuming that''ll open wide enough. I personally use a Vice-grip as it well even if the shower fitting nut has a rounded style to it.

--ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS--

I''ve been so happy with the performance of the Sprite filters, that I''ve never had the inclination to try any other brand or type. I have researched all the major kinds out there, and none convinced me to change. The Sprite was the most cost effective, and gets rated as having excellent results.

In recent months I have since looked at other shower filters on the market. The alternatives which stand out are the Aquasana AQ-4100 Deluxe Shower Water Filter System with Adjustable Showerhead and the Rainshow''r KDF Shower Filter With Massage Shower Head. Both are more expensive than the Sprite, and both can only be purchased with a shower head included (as far as I can tell). These other filters cost a lot more. Just the replacement cartridge for the Aquasana can be $40+. Are they any better? I can''t really say, as I have not used anything but the Sprite, but certainly worth looking into.

-DO YOU NEED THE SHOWER HEAD ALSO? SOMETHING TO CONSIDER --

The product you are looking at comes with a filter PLUS a high efficiency shower head.

The advantage of getting the shower head option (the product you are looking at) is that if you travel you may find where it is useful to have the filter AND the shower head. I find it has better output than many of the shower heads I come across. This is especially noticeable if the water pressure is relatively low, in which case the high efficiency shower head will make it seem like the pressure is MUCH stronger. It''s also more environmentally friendly, because you will use less water when showering.

HOWEVER, if you only intend to use this filter in your house AND you already know you want to keep your EXISTING shower head, there is really no foreseeable reason to buy it with a shower head. You can buy it without the shower head here: Sprite HO-WH High Output White Shower Filter, Polished White, Chrome, Gold

STILL NOT SURE? At the time I am writing this, the price difference is minimal (less than $5), so if you think these is ANY chance you might need or want the high efficiency shower head then I''d suggest you go ahead and get it.

--THE CARTRIDGES--

I find that the filter cartridge lasts me much longer than a year because it is just me and my partner using it, and my showers are relatively short and only every second day or so. They can last me for a couple of years before I notice the chlorine smell returning. Replacement cartridges are relatively cheap. Here''s an example: Sprite Filter Cartridge Replacement Model HOC For High-Output Filter Heads -just $13.56 plus free Prime shipping at the time I am writing this.

--WATER PRESSURE?--

In my experience, having used this on MANY showers around the world (I travel with on), this filter does not create any noticeable change in water pressure.

TIP: If the water pressure is very high, it is advisable to actually not put the shower pressure on full. If the pressure is too high you will get decreased performance from this (and any other) shower filter. Set the pressure at a level that is still enjoyable, but not blasting out -if you wish to maximise the amount of chlorine removal.

--FOUR STARS, ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT--

I gave have left one star off of this review simply because this product has not changed in the past 12 years and I think there is room for improvement. The most notable would be to include a convenient way to record on the filter when it was installed, and thus when it "might" need to be replaced. Better, would be a small built-in (resettable) flow meter or some way to indicate when it needs to be replaced. I realise, however, such an innovation may increase the price, but it would also ensure we get maximum usage of the filter, and minimum exposure to chlorine once it needs replacing.

--PATHOGENS, AN ISSUE ?? -(Added, in response to a question raised in the comments discussion on the review I wrote of this product WITHOUT the shower head)

One person raised concerns (in the comments) about this filter increasing pathogens in the water, based on the inaccurate idea that removing/rendering harmless the chlorine with KDF will result in a built up of pathogens in the shower head. This is a good point to address. Here is the information I shared in my reply:

Even if KDF did nothing to modify pathogen levels in the water, it is not going to directly result in an increase in such pathogens, as you have suggested. But, as it stands, KDF will actually kill most pathogens. Some manufacturers of carbon block drinking water filters will actually fill the central tube in these cylinder shaped filters with KDF granules. Partly because KDF helps with chlorine removal, etc., but ALSO because it will greatly increase the usable life-span of the carbon filter. A major issue issue with carbon filters for drinking water is that over time they can become a breeding ground of bacteria and pathogens, potentially making the water worse (from a pathogenic perspective) rather than better. Inclusion of KDF in the filter helps prevent or eliminate this issue.

Something I did not point out in my review is that KDF media will also kill bacteria, fungi, virus, etc. It will also reduce heavy metals (not really an issue for showering), and will also reduce hydrogen sulfide (usually harmless even for drinking, but is what gives some water sources a slight rotten egg smell).

Here''s a blurb on KDF from one of the manufactures of this material:

"KDF process media work to reduce or remove chlorine, iron, hydrogen sulfide, lead, mercury, calcium carbonate, magnesium, chromium, bacteria, algae, and fungi.

KDF media exchange electrons with contaminants, changing them into harmless components. During their reactions, electrons are transferred between molecules and new elements are created."

"KDF media control the build-up of bacteria, algae and fungi in organic based media such as GAC filters and in-line carbon filters, extending the life of the carbon as well as protecting downstream RO membranes and ion exchange resins form fouling.

KDF process media kill bacteria by direct electrochemical contact and by the flash formation of hydroxyl radicals and hydrogen peroxide, both of which interfere with a microorganism''s ability to function."

---

I trust this clears up any confusion about this.

A friend of mine in Colorado wrote a book many years ago called Don''t Drink The Water (without reading this book): The essential Guide to Our Contaminated Drinking Water and What You Can Do About It. I highly recommend reading it. He was the one who put me onto KDF about 12 years ago. Although I''ve been using the Sprite filter since the mid 1990''s, but didn''t really understand the ins-and-outs of KDF and the role it place in the Sprite filter doing its job.

Happy showering!

We moved out of the subs into the woods with a nasty smelling, high iron well water -- UGH

Even turning up the water softner to different levels, using rust removal salt, our water was awful.

My hair was flat and dull, my skin was dry and flaky, and if the water got in my eyes it burned.

And ewwwww... that smell.

I purchased a filter shower head and my shower was still turning orange and the water still smelled bad.

So I installed the Sprite shower head with filter, and noticed a difference right away.

All my issues were solved. Works so well with my funky well water.

Highly recommend this product, easy to install, no issues with water pressure and it works !!

The only complaint that I would have is that it makes the shower head much lower and you kind of have to play with adjusting the position to get it right.
