SodaStream Penguin Glass Carafe 11x4x4-in.

SodaStream Penguin Glass Carafe 11x4x4-in.THis container is exactly like the ones that come with the SodaStream penguin. Very attractive and sturdy. However, if you have a SodaStream Jet or Pure, I doubt this will be compatible. Penguin contains are 20oz and Jet containers are about 34oz.

Everything seemed fine with the carafes I ordered until just a few minutes ago. After taking a drink from the soda I just made I noticed what felt like a small piece of ice cube. My soda was warm so this definitely didn''t make much sense. To my surprise it was a piece of glass. Despite having never dropped or banged my carafe against anything, a small piece of glass managed to break off from the top and fall into my soda. Not only is this dangerous, but now the carafe cannot seal properly. Be very cautious with these things. The sodastream itself is pretty convenient though so I''ll probably give another carafe a try.

Buy SodaStream Penguin Glass Carafe 11x4x4-in. Now

We got a Penguin system about a year ago, and we have been using the two bottles it came with. Each holds the same amount as our large drinking glasses, so we never store them charged. As soon as we make it, we drink it, so it''s always fresh. We thought it would be nice to have some extras on hand, so we had more water ready to charge in case we had people over. We keep them full of uncharged water in the fridge, ready to use.

When we got the system, the brochure it came with showed a few different styles of glass carafes, but looking around (including SodaStream''s website), it appears these carafes are the only style available now. And that''s fine, because this is the style it came with, so we now have a set of four that all matches. They are good quality and elegant, perfect for guests.

I also like drinking from glass as opposed to plastic. I think it just tastes better, but there are those who say it''s bad for your health to ingest anything from plastic.

I''m not Conan the Barbarian, but the lid on these glass carafes are very sensitive. Once I figured out the right amount of pressure/tightness in closing the bottles they work perfectly. I appreciate the ease of cleaning and maintaining.

Want SodaStream Penguin Glass Carafe 11x4x4-in. Discount?

I bought this soda stream penguin and came up with 2 glass carafe , i do love the system but In just 3 months the 1st carafe had a crack on the mouth piece and a year later the 2nd bottle did the same thing. At first i didnt ask for replacement for i still have the 2nd bottle. This is DANGEROUS for some small glass pieces might be sitting inside the bottle that you don''t know. I noticed the caps has poor quality on sealing the bottle if it stays capped for long period of time it get stucked. It''s so annoying to put the cap because you have to allign them so sometimes i just leave them open in the fridge and carbonate it as i needed in which im forced to finish the whole bottle so i dont need to re-cap them. I hope the company will check on this things for i see the danger especially for children who are using it.

Royal and Imperial Berkey Water Filter Water View Spigot

Royal and Imperial Berkey Water Filter Water View Spigot
  • Fits the Royal and Imperial Berkey Water Filter Units
  • View water levels without taking off the lid
  • Replaces existing spigot
  • Know when your Berkey water filter needs water

This is a mediocre product. Paying close to $45 with shipping, I expected a product worth close to $45 or at least $35. If I were doing it all over again, I wouldn''t pay more than $25 for this. It does function as a good water gauge which was the purpose I bought it. If you''re like me, you don''t want to have to remember to check the water all the time and this works well to quickly glance at it and know how much water is in it and when to refill it.

Pros:

Good water gauge

Good flow of water

Comes apart easily to clean

Glass tube

Fast shipping

Cons:

Silver plastic casing around the glass tube is plastic and not stainless steel

Plastic casing does not match my stainless steel Royal Berkey

No replacement parts if something, such as the glass tube, breaks (You would have to buy the whole thing over again!)

Spigot threads attaching to Berkey system are too short, the company sends a really thin, non-beveled washer to make up for this. It took a couple tries to get the two washers and plastic nut onto the few threads on the new spigot without any leaks. It has to be tight enough to seal, but too tight and the washer pushes away from the plastic nut and leaks. After tightening the plastic nut enough to seal but not too much to push away, the plastic nut was only partially on the threads but it works.

Overall, this is a mediocre product, over-priced at $45, fair purchase at $25 or less.

Works well. Instructions could be a bit clearer. But a very good accessory for knowing when to refill your Berkey instead of looking each time in to the bottom section. Should be standard and included in Berkeys. But sure glad it''s available.

Just got this installed on my Royal Berkey. It is so much better than lifting the top tank to look into the bottom resivoir. If you have a Berkey, you need one of these. Clear instructions explain which washer goes where during the installation. No leaks.

I originally had problems with it leaking. I thought that I screwed it on tight enough, but apparently not tight enough. Once I screwed it around 1 complete revolution, it stopped leaking. Now it works great.

I tried to leave a more thorough review but Amazon wouldn''t let me, I suppose I somehow violated their rules and that''s OK because I LOVE Amazon and I know they stand by their products, so I''ll just say that this was sent to me by an outside distributor selling on Amazon in a flimsy manilla envelope with only a piece of paper wrapped around it. It was missing both washers and the nut plus there were no instructions. I called the main dealer of the Berkey and they verified that the washers and the nut that fit the Water View Spigot are different than the nuts and washer that come with the spigot on the Berkey.

I paid for overnight shipping so I''d receive both the Berkey and this Water View Spigot together so I could assemble my new Berkey (which I love..I''ll review that later), and this spigot at the same time. Won''t happen now.

I called the distributor (which is not Amazon and I should have known better than to buy this from someone who just uses Amazon to sell) of this spigot and only got a digital voice asking me to leave a message. IF I get a call back from them and get good service I''ll report back, but this should never have happened and the packing was terrible.

Edited to add: Well they emailed me back and blamed Amazon, said it was Amazon''s fault and I know it wasn''t because Amazon simply sent out the SEALED in a plastic bag package (that was provided them by this company) and there were no holes where these could have escaped. They passed the buck. I lost the buck or more like $40 worth!

Teavana PerfecTea Tea Maker, 16oz

Teavana PerfecTea Tea Maker, 16ozThe good: This is really easy to use and you don''t get any leaves in your tea. It also looks really cool when making the tea. You just put tea leaves and hot water in the top, let it steep, then put it over a mug (or anything else you drink tea from) and it automatically pours the brewed tea from the bottom.

The bad: As the tea pours directly into the cup from the bottom of the tea maker, unless you have a clear mug you can''t see how much you''re pouring. Lifting the tea maker up to check the quantity in the cup is slightly annoying, and I''ve had a few overflows, but it''s not a big deal. It''s also avoidable with the extra step of pouring the liquid into the cup/mug to measure and then into the tea maker.

However, it is perfect size for my Thermos Nissan JMW500P6 16-Ounce Stainless-Steel Backpack Bottle, Silver, so that works great and I don''t need to check the quantity in the thermos!

Cleaning: It''s pretty easy to clean. Generally, I throw out the leaves right away and then rinse the tea maker out with hot water. I then let it dry with the lid open. That does the job pretty well. If I let it sit or decide that I want a more thorough cleaning, the filter pops out very easily. However, I did have a bit of trouble getting it back in the first few times. It takes a little practice, but becomes very easy.

Overall, I highly recommend this tea maker, even with the small flaw.

Purchased 16oz teamaker less than a year ago from the Teavana store, at a local mall, for . Used it two to three times per week. And the stainless steel ?? mesh filter began rusting/corroding, not tea stained. There is no way to remove the corrowsion, or the screen for replacement. Brought it to the Teavana store, showed them the corrosion; and was told I had to call customer suppport, since it was over thirty days old. While at the Teavana store I called Customer support, which wasn''t helpful at all. Was told they wouldn''t replace it. However, if I shipped it to them at my expense, they would look at it; but they don''t warrant the product beyond thirty days.

Subsequently, I purchased another unit by Adagio, from Amazon, and it has been superior to the Teavana unit. Nylon mesh screen doesn''t corrode, and can be removed for cleaning or replacement if necessary. Very disappointed with Teavana product design, quality, and customer support.

My wife received this product as a gift this spring. We never mistreated the maker, hand washing it and following the recommendations of the manufacturer however after only a few weeks of use the ball baring that serves as a valve to empty the tea into a cup shifted out of place rendering the device useless. "No problem" I thought, Teavana is a large company charging premium prices, Im sure they will take care of us. After several email exchanges we get the ok to mail it back. After mailing it a few weeks go by and nothing. We email Tevana only to find that the product was "lost in the mail". Perhaps it was, I probably send 100 things a year through the USPS and while none have ever gotten lost perhaps this was the unfortunate first case. However, when I started searching for reviews about Teavana I discovered a troubling pattern, they have been having problems with this model failing frequently and had pulled similar stunts on other customers. We did not mail our defective product to the Bermuda triangle, we sent it to the address they told us to.

Recommendation for Teavana: AVOID! The premium price buys you neither a premium product nor quality service.

I bought the 16 oz Perfect Tea Maker in September. Half of the hinge to the lid broke off two weeks ago--just under 4 months later. I took it back and asked for a replacement. The mall store manager in Denver refused because I didn''t have the receipt (who keeps receipts to everything?). I contacted Teavana directly via their website January 2nd (confirmation email dated & timed 1:12p), after reading on their website that they take pride in their products, that they want happy customers, and that they take 24-48 hours to respond. It''s now January 6th without a response.

I''d still take a replacement for this poorly constructed tea maker, only because I know they won''t refund it. However, I don''t think I''ll be supporting Teavana again any time soon. They do have delicious tea. My review of the Perfect Tea Maker is less generous--examine it before you buy it, and I think you''ll find that the hinge on the lid of the tea maker is poorly designed, flimsy and subject to break with repeated use--and if you like tea, you''re repeatedly using the tea maker. I''ll go back to my stainless strainer, I guess.

I guess I expected better from a company that I liked a lot. What a disappointment.

I received this item on Christmas with 2 types of teas from teavana, shortly after i tried it out. This tea maker is very well built and works very well at a decently low price. very simple to use, place the maker on the provided coaster, open lid, add proper amount of tea, add water at proper temp. close lid, steep for proper time, place maker on top of mug. The way the tea maker is built is the tea and water sits and steeps in the maker and after its all steeped and ready you place it on top of your mug, the rim of the mug releases a seal in the maker and the tea drains down. functions great, very smart build. looks pretty sleek too. Very happy with the product. being easy to clean (dishwasher safe) and store is a big plus too. Definitely something to look into if your new to or a big drinker of loose leaf tea.

10 Oz Aluminum Spray Bottle

10 Oz Aluminum Spray Bottle - More Green! The aluminum portion of the spray bottle is great however, after 2 days of light use the plastic spray part literally broke in my hands. I have since purchased a new spray bottle just for the spray part and still use the aluminum base.

Its a nice bottle but after a couple of weeks the top wouldnt screw onto the bottle correctly. Not sure if it was the top or the aluminum part, but it got so bad that the bottle would fall off top if it was full of water.

Saeco Aroma - Espresso Machine Save 27% Off

Philips Saeco RI9376/04 Aroma Espresso Machine, Stainless SteelThis machine works great, it is heavy duty metal case and does delicious creamy espresso. This machine does not leak like the gaggia I tryed before and for the price it is far the best I used. If you get it from Amazon you will get the best service ever! The water tank on the back is removable to fill and clean, the water retention tank for the coffee drops below is also removable, easy to clean, big enough and of very good quality. The metal grill does not rust and the portafila is solid. Saeco is the perfect Italian espresso lover''s machine and it is so solid that it''s like it was German made and not Italian :) I checked a lot of brands, models and review and that''s from far the best I found for the bucks. I owned fully automatic machines for 10x the price paid here and that one is doing better espresso than any of them... This machine is a hit!

+ You wake up in the morning, feeling like quite "non-energetic".. Head over to the saeco aroma, turn it on, and by the time you have your milk outta the fridge and on the counter(20 seconds), your toast into the toaster (40 seconds), your shot glasses under the portafilter (4seconds), brought out your cappuccino cup from the cupboard (7.6 seconds), and then placed ground coffee in the portafilter, along with a little milk and your favorite all-natural latte flavoring into the frothing pitcher (63 seconds if your fast like me) :)........ the machine is ready to brew up two delicious espresso shots. How convenient! The local Sbux doesn''t know what to do, was i kidnapped? did I move across country? where have I been? .......Yea well i''m at home making my own coffee treats from now on, I expect the machine to pay itself off in one year, best purchase I''ve made for quite a while.

+ This is a compact machine, I propped mine 2.5 inches off my granite countertop with a solid block of aluminum, anything will do, seattle coffee gear even sells actual espresso stands, however they can be considered expensive by some people.

+ Before pulling a shot, be sure to preheat the portafilter with 5 seconds of brew-button-time, the shot will be much more creamy...(crema)

Saeco Vienna Plus SuperAutomatic is convenient but will not last long, Gaggis classic has all the same features this has for a slightly unjustifiable price increase, Rancilio will do everything this machine can do with just nicer parts, Basically you can make an excellent coffee drink with either machine, it wouldn''t matter..

+ Yes,, I have timed the Saeco Aroma. It takes EXACTLY 102 seconds from the time the switch is flipped until it is ready to brew. ( when the brew light is activated)

+ One of the most competitive machines in the sub $450 price range, if not the best..

+ Machine heats up very fast. I would say under 2 minutes and its ready to brew.. That''s faster than I can boil a cup of water in my 800watt microwave! and much faster than brewing drip coffee__>__

+ Cup warmer is a nice addition, but actually by the time the water boiler is hot and ready to brew the cup warmer (which is heated by the water boiler) has only begun to start warming up, thus the cups really wont be warm unless the aroma has been on for about 20mins.. I usually preheat by brewing the hot water into the empty cups, (which the instruction booklet recommends)

+ None of the stainless parts will rust, including the grate under the cups

+ I myself think the frothing wand is fine out of the box, (please read up on milk frothing guides online to get the best out of this machine.) With a little skill and a good 20oz frothing pitcher, I was making sweet creamy cappuccinos with dense micro-foam in no-time at all. (Seattle Coffee gear sells a nice panarello upgrade on their site for around $40 usd).

+ Portafilter is very solid and heavy duty, I feel very confident using it.

+ Large water tank, big enough to fill once a week (one individual).

+ Solid, Easy to clean stainless steel housing.

+ Fashionable design, simple and modern.

Buy Saeco Aroma - Espresso Machine Now

I am not a coffee aficionado however I do love good espresso. I have had the Saeco Aroma machine for 2 months now. My main criticism regards the milk steamer wand with panerello. Because of the configuration and compact size of the machine, the panerello is very awkward to use. To fit a pitcher of milk under it and remove it without spilling I set the machine at the edge of a table with the wand overhanging. I was not particularly happy with the quality of the foam so I completely removed the plastic panerello assembly from the wand and now steam milk using the bare stainless steel tube. This is a reasonable solution except that the tube is very short without the panerello. Regarding the espresso quality, although I have made many a good cup of espresso, I have yet to coax a superior shot out of the pressurized portafilter. In fact, I got equal results with my old $60 Krups that had a non-pressurized portafilter and lacked a steam pump, working on steam pressure only. I was also disappointed to find that the steam valve knob is of plastic, not stainless steel like the body of the machine and has a cheap feel and look. The jury is still out. Maybe for the price this is as good as it gets. I recommend checking this machine out at a store before buying on-line because the steam wand configuration may be a deal breaker for you.

I''ve been looking for an espresso machine to replace a 12-year-old Krups steam-driven espresso machine which finally died (the steam wand gave out). None of the machines under $300 seem to get consistently good reviews on Amazon but the Saeco Aroma Espresso got the best reviews of the cheaper-end machines. So, I ordered it through Amazon. After it arrived, I was looking forward to enjoying good espresso coffee (but a little apprehensive about the steam wand problems other users reported). The first thing I did was to run a tank of water through the machine to clean it (recommended by the manual before first use). Well, guess what: the steam wand wasn''t a problem no trouble getting my milk pitcher under the wand and no leaks! Ah, I thought this machine is going to work out after all.

But the next step was to run water through the pressurized portafilter and that''s where I ran into problems. The portafilter leaked like crazy! Most of the hot water dripped into the cup under the portafilter but a lot of it leaked out above the portafilter and ran down the handle to my kitchen counter. I removed the portafilter and ran hot water directly into the cup with no problems. So the problem was with the portafilter water just wasn''t getting through it as it should. I looked at the rubber gasket inside the portafilter and it appeared intact; so there must have been an obstruction somewhere else inside the portafilter. I wasn''t going to disassemble it find out. It''s a new machine, never used before, and it should have worked right out of the box.

So, I''m going to contact Amazon about returning this machine. I''m undecided about whether to ask for a replacement machine or just give up on the idea of being able to make my own espresso coffee at a reasonable price. Maybe a moka pot is the way to go to get an espresso-like coffee. It''s certainly cheaper and simpler to use than these big machines, which take up a lot of counter space and break down at a remarkably high rate.

I''ll update this review when I decide which way I''m going to go.

UPDATE: Amazon won''t replace it only refund my money when I return the machine. That''s too bad because I''ll never know if the machine was badly made or just this particular portafilter was broken. I''m back to square 1 again.

UPDATE: I decided to call Saeco and ask for a replacement for the faulty portafilter and they agreed to send me one. I''ll update my review when I receive and use it.

UPDATE: I received the replacement portafilter from Saeco (no charge) and I''m going to raise my rating to 4 stars, based on the espresso maker''s performance with the replacement. It works very well and I''ve enjoyed several cups of espresso made with the Saeco Aroma machine. It is simple and easy to use and makes an excellent espresso with nice crema. I''m still a bit leery regarding its durability since some reviews on this site suggest it could fail at any time. I haven''t tried the steam wand yet; since I drink espressos rather than lattes or cappuccinos. But I may try to brew some of those to try out the steam wand. In any case, if my experience with this espresso maker causes me to further revise my opinion to any great degree, I''ll provide another update later.

UPDATE: I ran into an unexpected problem with this machine. The first month I used ground coffee to brew espresso but then I decided to see how it would handle E.S.E pods. I followed the instructions remove the ground coffee basket from the portafilter and insert the E.S.E. basket included with the machine. There''s just one major obstacle: I can''t lock the portafilter into the machine with the E.S.E basket in it. It looks like there isn''t quite enough clearance for the portafilter to lock into place with pod basket in it. So, it seems as though I can''t use E.S.E pods a major flaw! And an odd one, considering I''m using the E.S.E. basket Saeco provided. I don''t know if it''s a problem only with the machine I bought or a design flaw with the machine. So, if you plan to brew espresso using pods, you should be aware of this potential problem. I''ll contact Saeco to see if they have a solution, e.g, replacing the E.S.E basket. If I get this resolved, I''ll update my review.

UPDATE: I called Saeco and the company sent me a replacement rubber gasket for the E.S.E pod basket in the hope this would fix the problem. But it didn''t. Either the rubber gaskets provided with the E.S.E pod baskets are too thick or some part of the brew head is projecting too far into the pod basket to allow the portafilter to lock in. I still don''t know if this is a general problem or a problem peculiar to my machine. I doubt it can be resolved short of returning it to Saeco for examination and/or repair. I''m not willing to risk that since the machine works well otherwise. I suppose I''ll just have to forgo using pods to brew espresso with this particular machine.

UPDATE: Thanks to a reviewer''s comment, I''ve revised my rating and review of this product. I was using the equipment incorrectly and it was not at fault I was! Now I''m enjoying delicious cups of espresso using pods! Please read the instructions closely and don''t make the mistake I was making. I highly recommend this product now!

Want Saeco Aroma - Espresso Machine Discount?

Bought two of these. One in 2008 (under two bills for the stainless) which is still workign with some problems, and one in 2010 (about 10% more).

The first one died with multiple problems at two years: permanently leaking stream wand, profuse leaking above porta-filter (this despite filter being well cleaned with the tiny holes all open).

The second one, which is clearly a lower build quality failed at thirteen months with even more issues. The thermostat failed causing boiler to go to steam temps when set at brew temps and resulting in burned espresso. If you are curious about Seaco service, give them a call even before you buy, and describe one of the three or four known problems posted here. In essence forget about repair. In-warranty is bad enough with exorbitant handling charges; out-of-warranty, any repair will net cost you 3/4 the cost of a new machine.

Be VERY cautious about the well meaning early reviews here. My guess is that the reviews from over two years go are not revisited and that those machines are DEAD. You can see this on espresso aficionado forums where the glowing reviews on forums from two years ago now show people''s machines died in very high number and Saeco was not helpful at all. Their attitude seems to want to squeeze even more moeny by charging just short of replacement cost for any repair, even the smallest. More alarming yet is that one can clearly see the build quality is lower and Saeco is coasting on the early good reviews it got and now shipping inferior made product. e''en the portafilter is a different cheaper material.

Al that said, if you go into expecting an average of one to two years this is a decent machine at about two bills that you can find it at from time to time.

Austin Air HealthMate HM 400 Save $0.01 Off

Healthmate HM-400 HEPA Air Filter Purifier - SandstoneI searched through a large selection of air filters trying to optimize price, utility, reputation, and ease of use (I don''t have time to replace some components every 6 months and other components every 3 months, etc). I decided on the Austin Air Healthmate Air Purifier. From there, it was a search for a reasonable retailer. Due to price (along with free shipping) and Amazon backing, I chose All Seasons Health.

The product arrived quickly and in perfect condition--I would definitely order other products through this retailer.

I pulled the Healthmate out of the box and after reading the instructions, I plugged it in and away it went (yep, that was it). I was having a problem with new carpet installation (an abundance of VOC''s causing watering eyes, sore throat, and dizziness); the difference in just two days was remarkable and noticed by others. The Healthmate has three settings, low, medium, and high. The output on high is amazing and has an added benefit of dramatically increasing airflow in the room. The low setting is quiet enough to sit next to the machine and watch a movie without difficulty.

According to the instructions, in about four to five years I will have to replace the filter inside and from a cursory review of the instructions, it should be much simpler than replacing my water filter.

I will add further comments closer to allergy season.

4 stars for the air cleaner, 1 star for out-of-warranty repairs. I have owned 2 Austin units since 1996, the full size HM400 and the ''Jr'' HM200. They do a pretty fair job of filtration, although there are better units that have come on the market since these came out. The filters do not last 5 years, more like 3 before they start to lose effectivness. That was still pretty good, until some of the better competition started to arrive. (I bought 2 competitors units, and they work better at filtering the air, and are about the same in filter costs, but I kept the Austins for use in other rooms.)

Overall, I was satisfied with these, until they needed out-of-warranty repair. The Austin HM 200 needed shipment to the factory just before the 5 year warranty was up, and was repaired under warranty, so I wasn''t aware of potential out-of-warranty problems. I recently replaced the filter on the larger Austin HM400, when I noticed the blower started running more slowly, and varying the speed a lot while running, even almost coming to a stop. I called Austin, and they said I would have to use the "... repair and return service for units that are outside of the five year warranty. It would be $45 for parts, $45 for labor and the shipping to and from our Buffalo offices would also be the customers expense." I could not see wasting the energy resources or money to ship this back to Buffalo from California, so I had a local HVAC service diagnose the problem. (tough diagnosis their is a metal case, a filter, a 3 speed switch, and electric motor, and a small black box on the motor called a run capacitor.) It turned out to be a $6.00 motor control capacitor, ("usual point of failure on fans and blowers last 5-10 years on average" according to the shop) which they suggested I order from Austin as being the ''easiest route''. I was surprised to get the same response from Austin:

"Unfortunately we do not sell the individual mechanical components of our units. We do offer a repair and return service for units that are outside of the five year warranty. It would be $45 for parts, $45 for labor and the shipping to and from our Buffalo offices would also be the customers expense." This would mean about $150 to replace a $6 part on a 15 year old unit wich is basically only a fan/motor/switch and a filter in a metal box. If they replaced the motor, wires, switch and provided a new warranty for that price, it would be worth it.

I will find the part elsewhere. As I said, this is a very reasonable air purifier, but there are better at the same or slightly higher price points. The biggest downside for potential purchasers, however, is that about the time you are due for the first filter (allegedly 5 years), your warranty will be up. This means a cost of ~$200 for a filter replacement, and $150+ shipping round trip when something goes wrong 70% of the cost of a new unit with a warranty. Something to keep in mind before purchase or ordering replacement filters on an older unit.

UPDATE 2/6/2011

After more research on the suspected broken part, I found it on-line, as well as from a local supplier that would sell retail (CarbonBrush.com) and ordered an exact replacement for the suspected damaged part, a small black box with 2 wires, bolted on the motor called a ''motor run capacitor''. I ordered the exact part from the numbers on the side of the black box "6uf +/5%,350vAC CBB61, UL number E183963". Available with a long wait for $6 on line from various overseas suppliers, ordering it locally was $10 $18 after California tax and shipping (prompt shipping by the company ordered late Thursday night, delivered prioritymail Saturday morning).

I also needed a 2 pack of crimp style spade connectors "22-18 Insulated female 0.25". At this point I could have taken the parts and Austin to any HVAV or sewing/vacuum cleaner repair shop for installation, but it was so simple a job that I felt I had enough basic wiring skill to do it myself. If you don''t know anything about electricity, just take everything to a shop like above. But if you have ever changed out a wall switch at your house, then you probably have enough knowledge and skill to do this at home.

I did it myself, and the Austin again runs just fine, no noise or motor speed changes. It took 15 minutes, and total cost under $20, not counting about 8 hours of my time researching the possible problem, and identifying a part source. (Incidently, in my research I found that this is the same part that fails on ceiling fans, with the same symptoms, and replacement parts and procedures are the same.)

The Austin Air Healthmate is the best I''ve ever owned. One large unit is enough for our entire house. It reduces (or even eliminates) odors from our cat''s litter box and makes the stale air in our home fresher when we return from a couple of days away. We run it in the bedroom at night and wake up feeling healthier than we did before we got one of these. It''s quiet on the lowest setting, and a little loud but very powerful on the highest setting. There''s easy maintenance (just vacuum the outside once a month). Replacement filters are a little on the expensive side (around $200), but well worth it. The salesperson that sold us ours said we''d have to replace the filter every five years. We run ours constantly and had to replace it after three years. I think the expense is still worth it, as the quality of this product cannot be matched by less expensive purifiers.

I bought this unit to help with my wife''s breathing issues. Last fall, we found out that she was allergic to a very common mold Aspergillus that is found in decomposing leaves and vegetation. So, she is basically allergic to the fall season. Wonderful. This year, we wanted to be as proactive as possible in eliminating the symptoms she was experiencing if at all possible. We knew that, at worst, we wanted to create a sanctuary of clean air in our home. Enter the Austin Air HealthMate.

Why I bought it

After a good deal of research, I landed on this unit for a few reasons. First, it is very well made. I didn''t want a unit that our 2 year old son or our large puppy would be able to break. This thing is solid. It weights in at about 45 pounds, so it won''t be picked up without some effort, but the wheels on the bottom make it a breeze to move around the house.

The second reason I chose this unit was because of the cost of filters. Many of the cheaper units have multiple filters that need to be changed at varying frequency. I don''t want to change a filter monthly, quarterly, and yearly. Not only is the maintenance just another thing to add to the list, but each filter costs more money. With the company not only claiming this unit''s filter lasts for 5 years, but also providing a warranty on the filter, I was sold. I haven''t done the exact math, but I bet you could buy a new unit every 5 years instead of replacing the filter and still come out ahead when compared to many of the units with lower upfront costs.

The final reason I chose this reason is because of the maintenance required. It is almost nothing. Every month or so, it is helpful to vacuum the outside of the unit to make sure nothing is blocking the air intake which would result in lower efficiency. That is. I can handle that.

Why would I recommend it?

The first night we used the unit in our bedroom, I woke up in the middle of the night. I took a breath through my nose, and realized why I had woken up. I had been congested for about 4 months. I just wrote it all off to allergies or seasonal changes. I didn''t realized that the air I was breathing in the house could be perpetuating the problem.

Over time, my wife made several comments about being able to breath easier. I couldn''t believe that an air filter could make that big of an impact. As her lungs seemed to be less of an issue, we got lazy with using it and often left it in the bedroom instead of rolling it into the living room. One day, my wife went out back for literally a few minutes, and came back in coughing hard. I wheeled the unit out into the living room, and turned it on high. Within a minute or so, the coughing stopped. We exchanged glances of disbelief. This thing was really working!

The final proof to me was when some friends came up for the weekend. Two of them are allergic to cats, and have to take medicine within a few hours of being in the house. With the filter, they asked if things had changed in the house, because their symptoms were greatly reduced.

The other thing I''ll add to this is how well it cleans the air for a good sized room. Our great room is where we spend most of our time, and consists of a living room, dining room and kitchen. This unit does a fantastic job of improving the air quality of the entire space. When we go to sleep, we just wheel the unit to the bedroom. I love how flexible it is for us to use where we are. It has also been great when my son gets sick. If his room smells bad, we put the unit in the room on high for a few minutes to clean the air.

What about the sound?

I''ll also address the sound of the unit, as it had come up a few times in my research. On 1, the unit blends in with ambient noise without a problem. The TV doesn''t have to be any louder, and we don''t have to talk differently than normal. On 2, the unit is easy to hear, and the TV needs to be turned up a a bit, but conversations aren''t dramatically impacted in our experience. On 3, the unit sounds similar to an AC unit fan quite noticeable. For us, the sound is no bother at all regardless of the setting. We are not light sleepers, so setting 1 and 2 have been no problem at all for us when it is running in our bedroom. We''ve never tried it on 3.

Conclusion

On the whole, this unit has been worth every penny for my wife and family''s well being. I never realized it would benefit me as much as it has either. The air is noticeably cleaner in our house, my congestion has been almost completely eliminated, and my wife''s asthma has been much more manageable. I had a lot of doubts when purchasing this, or any, air filter for our house. My expectations have been surpassed to say the least, which is good when you are spending this kind of money on something.

Want Austin Air HealthMate HM 400 Discount?

The primary reason my husband I bought this product was to clean the air in our home from the dog odor that seemed really hard to eliminate with traditional cleaning. We''ve had this product for a year now and have LOVED it from the beginning. Right away we noticed that the dog smell in the air was practically eliminated when we leave the unit running. When we return from being away from home for a few days or turn the unit off, we really notice a difference in the quality of the air; it does what it advertises it will do. It has also really helped with our allergies. I am giving this product four stars however, because after a year, I''m ready to buy a new filter, though the product advertises that it will last up to five years. When I recently called the company to ask about receiving a replacement filter, they offer a forty percent discount off the price of the filter during the first two years of use. I will be buying a replacement filter because we love this unit so much when it''s working at optimum level. I will say we leave it running all the time and have recently done renovations to our home, so that may be the reason we need a new filter already. Below is a breakdown of the pros and cons of this unit:

Pros:

-REALLY cleans the air of smells and allergens. I honestly was surprised by how clean the air smelled when we first bought the unit. It really does the job we wanted it to.

-Though I wouldn''t say it''s whisper quiet at the lowest level, we leave it running all the time (even when we''re out of the house during the day), and we really don''t notice the noise(and we have really tall ceilings).

-One unit will really clean a large surface area. I was concerned about the tall ceilings in our living space, but it hasn''t been a hindrance at all in the effectiveness of this product.

-Incredibly easy to use with very little maintenance and very easy to use right out of the box

-Though it''s not inexpensive, compared with similar high-end products on the market it''s priced reasonably. I can''t imagine something more expensive being more efficient. We''ve found this product to be worth the money that was paid for it, and it''s much better than having bought something at even half the price that didn''t work as well.

-Rolls easily so it can be tucked away or moved simply from room to room

Cons:

-The filter needs replacing after a year of use, but as I mentioned, we leave it running all the time and have done renovations in our home that probably contributed to the lack of longevity in the life of the filter. If you call Austin Air specifically, they will provide you with a new filter at a forty percent discount (during the first two years, but they will offer it at a pro-rated discount for up to five years).

Bottom line:

If you''re looking for an air-purifier that will rid your home of smells and allergens, you won''t be disappointed by this product (plus it''s incredibly low maintenance and easy to use).

Aprilaire #4331 Distribution Tray Save 43% Off

Aprilaire #4331 Distribution Traythis product was listed as an aprilaire replacement part. when I recieved it the water distribution tray had a rubber or fiber gluded in strip with the bumps on it for water distribution.

the original had the bumps as part of the plastic strip. I emailed seller and they replied very timely stating it was aprilaire part but had no information on the strip.

When I had my furnace cleaned I asked my serviceman about this. He said he noticed this on recent units he installed. He believes they are like this because some people when cleaning the strip rub off the bumps thinking they were part of the dirt build up. This is what I had done hence ordering a new strip. The fiber strip is much more visible. I hope it will last so water can be distributed better.

I don''t know what all to write here, but this evenly distributes water in my whole house humidifier. I replace it every 2-3 years or as the situation demands.

GE GXPL03H Filtered Water Pitcher Save 44% Off

GE GXPL03H Filtered Water PitcherI purchased this as a Goodwill Store (Sorry Amazon!:)). For what I paid, I figured at least I could make iced tea, etc in it. Boy was I surprised!! The water out of my tap was horrible, and we really thought it was making us sick. I''ve tried others, and this was by far the the best tasting water filter pitcher I''ve ever tried. I have arthritis in my hands, and the bigger ones were too hard for me to fill and pour. I have to say this was one of the BEST buys I''ve made!! It was easy to fill, the water filters quickly, it''s easy to pour due to the moveable spout to prevent spills, and the water tastes terrific! I use it when I make coffee, Kool Aid for the grand kids, iced tea, etc. Plus we live in Florida, so we drink a LOT of water. If you want a REALLY great, and easy to use and fill pitcher, this is the one to buy. I also love the fact that there is a little LCD indicator to tell me when the filter needs to be changed. BUY THIS FILTER PITCHER!! You will be extremely happy with it, the price here on Amazon is good. Being on a fixed income, I didn''t want to spend $30 or more $$, that I wasn''t sure about, so this was perfect. You won''t regret it!

This is a really good purchase especially for the price! I have been very impressed with the ease of use and great water. I have water with a lot of minerals and strong taste, but this pitcher not only makes the water crystal clear, but also taste amazing!

Buy GE GXPL03H Filtered Water Pitcher Now

The filter that came with my pitcher was excruciatingly slow. I soaked it before use, as prescribed, but when I tried to use the filter, I''d get about 10 drops a minute. Took all morning to get half a pitcher of water! Fortunately, when I got a second filter, it worked much better. Now it can filter half a pitcher in about 10 minutes or so.

Otherwise the pitcher itself is well designed. I like the way the spout automatically flips up when you begin pouring. The water tastes great, since it filters much better than Brita filters. I''m just hoping the first filter I got was a fluke, and I never get another "overstuffed" filter that barely allows water to flow through.

PUR MineralClear Faucet Refill RF-9999 (6 Pack) Save 2% Off

PUR MineralClear Faucet Refill RF-9999, 6 Pack
  • Certified to remove 10 times more contaminants than the leading brand''s pitcher filter
  • Removes 99 percent of lead and microbial cysts and reduces many other contaminants that may be in water
  • First leading brand shown to reduce trace levels of pharmaceuticals (pharmaceutical reduction is not certified by NSF/ANSI or state standard)
  • Filters water over natural minerals for a crisp, refreshing taste
  • Replaces previous three-stage filter

I have been using these for about 8 years now and moved to the 3 stage when they came out. I use them primarily for drinking water and cooking. They typically last about 3 months for me. I go through a LOT of drinking water and probably less than average for cooking.

Based on using them on two different water systems, I also believe the quality of the water going in makes a huge difference in the life of the filter... but then that really is just common sense isn''t it? For instance, using it the week after a city wide fire hydrant flushing will use one up very quickly. I can''t speak to what that means to anyone else, but it tells me it is WORKING!

As another reviewer mentioned... ONE HOT WATER EPISODE WILL KILL A FILTER! It is a shame it is this way, but I have on two occasions had someone turn on hot water and let it run through the filter for a while. The filter would stop flowing within a day after that. The instructions warn against this, but accidents happen.

On the other hand, I had one that would not flow at all right out of the box. I called the 800 number on the box, told them what happened and that I had put in a different filter, which worked, and then tried this one again... showing that I had done my due diligence, and I had a replacement in the mail within a week, no cost, without having to return the failed one.

Also, if you buy the 6 pack, they are under $10 each.

It absolutely DOES make the water taste and smell better than plain tap water.

I''ve been using these filters since 2005, and I have been ordering them online in 6 packs from this site since 2009.

I''m not sure what is going on, but after the second filter change in this most recent purchase, I''ve come to the conclusion that these filters have been "changed" such that their performance has dramatically declined. Simply put, my water now tastes POORLY.

The first thing I noticed upon receipt of this latest 6-pack, is that the outer wrapping of the individual filters is not shrink/vacuum--packed. In all previous orders these filters where vacuum-packed. Secondly, there is no product labeling on the same wrappers, which was not the case in previous orders for they were labeled. Third, the filters feel "less heavy" and feel similar to salt shakers, in that one can tell there are loose granules inside (some of which appear loosely leaked inside the packaging--white round granules), which I never noticed before. Finally, the best and most important indicator that something has been altered is the taste of the hard (and very same) water for which I''ve been using these since 2005...it tastes poorly (bitter, chemical-like taste) compared to the "neutral" clean taste of said filtered-water previously, and there is a slight residue/cloudiness visible in appearance in the water, whereas it was clear with previous filters. Another indicator is the increased left-over deposits in my coffee maker (also the coffee now tastes bad). These filters are obviously NOT filtering/cleaning my water as in previous years.

Finally, along with the change in package appearance of the 6-pack box, I noticed that these are also (now?) "Made in Mexico" which I don''t recall was the case of my previous orders...can''t say for sure, but the product was consistent in performance (and appearance) since 2005...(I''ll also say that I was using the Pur 2 stage water filters successfully for 5 years previously).

I haven''t contacted the manufacturer, which I will do so in order to get their response to the above-mentioned issues. I shall update when I do so.

Until then, I can NO LONGER recommend this product, which was so wonderfully working for me for the last few years. (I haven''t checked local stores for comparison, and will do so).

Until I find some answers to what happened, I don''t recommend these filters. I will return with an update when I get one.

IMMEDIATE UPDATE: I just called Pur at 800-787-5463 and spoke with a CS rep. His response included the following: thanking me for calling and reporting my complaints, asking me for the lot number of the filter(s) which are performing poorly, stating he would report my complaints to the appropriate department, reminding me that Pur consistently performs quality assurance tests to avoid issues (duh!), and stating that he would send me a "Buy One Get One Free" coupon which I can expect to receive within the next 2-3 weeks after I give him my address/phone number. There were communication difficulties...the CS rep had a pronounced foreign accent and admitted he was having problems hearing me. So we will see...I do intend to follow-up this call with an email.

UPDATE: Decided to contact Amazon via phone for advice with very poor results. I DO NOT recommend trying to get much resolved via phone...unless, perhaps it''s Kindle-related. However, after my 3rd attempt at contacting Amazon by email, I received a reply stating they are sending me a new 6 pack via overnight mail and are requesting a return of my remaining defective product. Very nice response this time...will follow up soon. It remains to be seen whether the 6 pack I previously ordered was a bad lot or that Pur''s filter quality has dramatically declined.

5/14/11 UPDATE: Amazon quickly sent me replacement pack and asked that remaining "old" filters be returned. The quality of water tastes somewhat improved, but it seems that Pur changed this product for the worse. After I run through the remaining 4 filters, I shall no longer buy this product. 2 STARS.

UPDATE:

A few months after I posted this, PUR finally contacted me with an intelligent response.

They apologized (again) and explained that their RF-9999 DOES in fact contain ion-exchange resin.

I don''t know whether or not I should be surprised that it took them this long to come up with a response. Perhaps they assume that most people will have no idea what ion-exchange resin is and will therefore not ask about it or look for indication of it on the packaging.

Also, other people have responded to my review with useful comments. Check them out. For instance, one commenter explains this product''s certifications.

My original review:

I own a PUR faucet attachment that takes the RF-9999 filter replacement cartridge. Out of concern for my baby girl''s health, I wanted to make sure that the water we mix in her formula is free of lead and other heavy metals. The copper pipes that carry water in your house have enough lead content (to make them flexible) that water sitting in the lines for a few hours can build up unhealthy levels of lead that can cause all manner of developmental problems in children. For your health and that of your children, it''s best to be sure to flush your water lines before consuming tap water. Take a shower in the morning and run your faucets a little before you make coffee and mix formula. (Save the flush water in old milk jugs for watering your plants.) As added protection, it''s also a good idea to use a water filter with ion-exchange resin that will filter out residual heavy metals.

I noticed that the product description of the RF-9999 on Amazon.com mentioned that it includes ion-exchange resin. But when I looked at the filter''s packaging and the PUR web site, there was no mention of it, although the product does claim certain certifications regarding reduction of various heavy metals, including lead. According to PUR, the RF-9999 filter contains something to trap sediment, activated carbon that they claim also reduces lead, and some minerals. I spoke with a hydrologist from the U.S. Geological Survey about this, and he explained that activated carbon is largely ineffective at trapping heavy metals and that none of the other components of the filter would have any effect either; only a filter with ion-exchange resin would be able to significantly reduce the lead content.

Thus, I contacted PUR to inquire as to whether or not the RF-9999 contained ion-exchange resin, and if not, I wanted to know how it filtered lead and to inform them that Amazon.com''s description might be inaccurate. First, I got an automated response that seemed to have nothing to do with my question, so in accordance with their instructions, I replied, explaining that my question had not been answered. The reply to this was that they were sorry I was having trouble with their product (I had not reported any problems), and that they''d be happy to answer any questions I had. So, apparently, they lost my question. So I replied to that, repeating my question. The next respond quoted my previous email (with the question in it), and again apologized for the trouble I was having with their product, and told me that they''d be happy to answer any questions I had. I responded again, heading my email with another copy of my question. This time, I finally got something resembling an answer, but it was a brief and vague statement that the information on their web site was accurate. They said nothing to reassure me that there was anything in their product that could account for their claim of being able to reduce lead in the water.

Perhaps the people at PUR I was corresponding with were just incompetent. I can''t expect the customer service contact to know anything about chemistry or hydrology, but it irks me when they don''t take my question seriously enough to inquire internally to get me a proper answer, especially when I''m trying to take steps to safeguard my family''s health. Besides Amazon.com making inaccurate statements about this product (probably told to them by someone at PUR), PUR''s web site and packaging make claims that do not appear to stand up to basic scientific scrutiny. As far as I can determine, there''s absolutely nothing in the RF-9999 that would be able to reduce lead content in water by any appreciable margin.

If you are buying water filter products, then you''re probably doing it not just to improve the taste of the water, but because you have a clue that there are things in your city or well tap water that you might not want to drink. Be fully informed about these things, and never trust your health to product claims that you haven''t verified.

Want PUR MineralClear Faucet Refill RF-9999 (6 Pack) Discount?

Don''t let the price scare you away (it''s actually a good deal). My local water has a displeasing taste/smell & this filter takes that water & turns it into .. well .. great tasting water. This filter will work on any of PUR''s faucet mounts.

It seems two reviewers below have major malfunctions in the operation of their filters; saying they only last a week or so, or do not work as advertised. It could be improper installation of the filter, or running a hundred gallons of water through them in two weeks.

Don''t pay a technician to change your inline water filter.

This filter installs easily and quickly. No tools are necessary. Just turn the water off where the humidifier''s water line tapped into your water pipe, then remove the tube endings from the old filter, insert them into the new, and turn the water back on. It may take you longer to read the directions that come with the filter than to install the filter, and the directions are themselves straightforward and simple.

Replace the filter each heating season to help prevent sediment buildup.

I ordered this to replace the filter for my Honeywell Steam Humidifier. It looks just like the OEM version did, and works fine.

When installing to replace an old version, push in on the hose and hold the little ring that it fits into down and then pull the hose back out. It will pop right out. Just make sure you turn the water off to it, and have a little bucket handy, there is a lot of water in the hose and filter that will come out.

BUNN BTX-B(D) ThermoFresh High Altitude 10-Cup Home Thermal Carafe Coffee Brewer Save 22% Off

BUNN BTX-B(D) ThermoFresh High Altitude 10-Cup Home Thermal Carafe Coffee Brewer, BlackWe bought this particular model because we want our coffee to brew fast and wanted an insulated pot to avoid coffee cooking or forgetting to turn off the burner. It would be an exact fit for our requirements if not for a few quality flaws. First, as with another Bunn we recently owned, the water releases into the grounds in such a way that they splash up the side and a little bit out of the grounds basket creating a mess you don''t have with other brands. (We''ve tried different methods to prevent this but they don''t work consistently.) Also, where the top black piece of the pot assembly is supposed to be sealed with the chrome portion, there is not a tight seal so when you pour a cup of coffee it dribbles out of the seal which makes a mess. (No we haven''t dropped it or put it in the dishwasher this started within the first few days of use.) Summary: Was willing to pay the high price to get the features and company name behind this product initially but the quality of the build is disappointing. Thought the quality problem with my first Bunn purchase was perhaps a one-time thing. Considering this second quality problem with a Bunn purchase, I will not be buying any future products from them.

I wasn''t thrilled about plunking down $150 for a coffee pot, especially after reading the reviews about how they leak. I guess I was one of the lucky ones or BUNN has fixed their leaking problem. My coffee pot works perfectly. This is the best coffee pot I''ve ever owned. I have coffee on all day long and I was getting tired of throwing out old coffee. With this pot, the coffee stays hot all day without that burnt taste. I''ll probably save money in the long run since I''m not throwing coffee out. I am very fussy about my coffee and as soon as it is the least bit old, i won''t drink it. Ever since my first Bunn, I have not used any other coffee pot. I can''t even drink coffee that comes from another pot. I don''t know why it makes such good coffee, but it''s just awesome, not to mention that by the time I get my cup and put the cream in, the coffee is done. Bottom line: This coffee pot makes the best coffee, it makes it FAST, and it stays hot all day. I just had to write this review because I am thrilled with my coffee pot.

I am quite pleased with my new coffee maker. It does everything it says it will, hot coffee, prepared in less than 6 minutes, and the warming carafe keeps my coffee hot for hours. The complaint about the carafe dripping/leaking when pouring coffee is not occurring with my unit. Make sure you buy the filters, when you buy the maker. They''re a bit more difficult to locate locally than I anticipated.

Read Best Reviews of BUNN BTX-B(D) ThermoFresh High Altitude 10-Cup Home Thermal Carafe Coffee Brewer Here

The carafe doesn''t really leak, rather, the spout is made out of really miserable plastic. So after one time in the washer or after a week or two of hand washing the lip gets a tiny fuzzy rough edge which makes it dribble most of your coffee down the side of the carafe. It''s a terrible defect, but the workaround is simple enough. Every week or two use a scouring pad with moderate pressure to "polish" the lip of the carafe and you can safely pour your coffee into your cup rather than all over your counter and yourself. I''m still ticked off about it on principle, but it''s a minor inconvenience overall.

Without a heater, the coffee won''t be very hot after an hour or two, so if you like your old and stale but hot coffee over the course of the late morning and early afternoon, get a regular carafe and heated tray.

And the Bunn filters are a must. They are taller and I have never had a spill with them. I just received my second box of 1500 or so filters from Bunn and I''ve had this thing for about three years.

It makes fine coffee and does it quickly. They should fix the plastic, but I''m very happy with this coffee maker.

It is true that from time to time this carafe dribbles when pouring, but mine has not had an issue for over a year now (a minimal problem at best). the coffee comes out HOT and this is the best machine i have ever owned period. the coffee extracts at the right temp for maximum flavor that will not disappoint *hint*-must also buy good coffee for this to occur. I was tired of tossing coffee machines after 1-2 years, this one is sure to last. and yes, I drink ALOT of coffee, using the pot at least 2x /day, which equals over 1300 brews so far.

Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug with Tea Strainer Save 32% Off

Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug with Tea StrainerI withdrew my previous, somewhat critical review and I''m replacing it with this. Having used this mug a while, I''ve fallen in love with it. It''s extremely high quality in materials and construction. The vacuum holds the temperature a very long time.

This is not intended for a car; it won''t fit the holder. Rather it is for the Asian practice of making green tea and carrying around at work. There is a little removeable tea basket to brew in the mug. Only 11 oz but very comfortable to hold, slim. Expensive but worth it.

Having worked for an electronics company which did vacuum packaging, I can tell you that most of the "vacuums" in home / kitchen products will not last very long before leaking in air. This means the heat retention capability will deteriorate over time. Zojirushi is different; they make equipment for the restaurant trade and it lasts.

I have searched for quite a while for the "perfect" spiced Chai Tea-making device. While this isn''t EXACTLY it, it comes pretty close while fitting my needs for a travel-type mug. Construction on this is good, there is a small compartment built into the top which allows storage of your raw tea mixture. Inside the screw top is a base for the mesh tea basket which hangs in your tea (for steeping). When you have steeped to your hearts content, you can unscrew the top, flip it over (the spices inside the top will not spill out) and slip the tea basket onto the lid. This clever bit of engineering allows for your milk or water to pool in a small drainage area while you sip your tea from the mug. Additionally, the mug is double-walled and offers very impressive thermal retention. If you can spare the change in the short-term, this method beats the Chai Tea served at your typical over-priced coffeehouses.

I bought this tea mug because of the great reviews and because I thought that stainless steel would be much safer in contact with boiling hot water than plastic tea travel mugs. I was very disappointed when I received the item to learn that the stainless steel mug is lined with a nonstick coating and that the tea basket is made of polyproylene. I certainly don''t want boiling hot water touching plastic or a chemical coating! I had to return the mug.

Yet again, Zojirushi has impressed me with an extremely durable piece of equipment that perfectly accomplishes everything for which it was designed. I am in love with this company. Everything I''ve bought from them is fantastic. I use this container daily at work, and I can''t imagine that I will ever get tired of it. It makes the steeping process completely painless, even preventing spillage by way of a clever steeper-holding cap design which is detailed very nicely in the manual. Personally, I''ve never found any use for the cap''s ability to contain dried product. I like that it''s there in case of an emergency, but I''ve never had to go beyond my morning restock of the wonderfully secure and obviously well-crafted mesh/plastic basket. The lid is secure; the thing is insulated perfectly; it could probably withstand a toss from the Taipei 101. I''d give it six stars if I could.

How can you call yourself a travel mug and have no way to drink out of it when you are traveling, I guess I was mislead on this. I was looking for a spill proof travel mug that I could drink in the car or take somewhere and drink from it, having the lid off does not make it spill proof if it gets tipped over on my desk. I have to admit it does keep things very hot for a long period of time.

Aroma AWK-160SB Pasta Plus Water Kettle and Noodle Cooker Save 8% Off

Aroma AWK-160SB Pasta Plus Water Kettle and Noodle CookerIn my quest for a healthier lifestyle, I decided to add green tea to my daily liquid intake. I''ve never been a coffee or tea drinker so I perused Amazon to find an electric tea kettle for my work office.

I decided to try the Aroma AWK-160SB kettle/cooker for several reasons. First, I like that it''s stainless steel and not plastic like so many other electric teapots. Second, the price seemed very reasonable for the item''s quality, and third, the pasta option seemed really cool!

I got my kettle and took it to work, only to find that the on/off switch would kick to off immediately when I turned the temp up. So, to boil water I had to hold down the switch manually. Not good. I contacted Amazon about returning the item and was VERY VERY impressed with their return policy on faulty products. They RUSHED me a new one AND paid return postage on the bad one. In this day of awful customer service being the norm for so many companies, I was thrilled about how well Amazon treated me.

When I got the new one, I was happy to find that it worked just fine. It is SO versatile. I''ve cooked both pasta and oatmeal in it, and also make my daily green tea. It comes to a boil very quickly and it''s very easy to turn down the dial and stabilize the water temp at just under a rolling boil for pasta.

My only complaint is that the cord that comes out of the base is really short, but worse is that it''s stiff and twisted (from being wrapped around the base) and when you don''t have the pot on the base, the cord can and will whip the base around like what happens to a person at the end of the line in ''crack the whip''.

I would think this item would be handy for an office, a dorm room or a single person''s kitchen. All in all, I''m quite impressed with its features and its cost/quality value.

I use this as a water kettle only currently, and I really like it so far. I''ve looked for a long time for an electric kettle that allows the water not to contact any plastic, and this kettle has this exact feature -the interior is completely metal although the lid is plastic, but you don''t have to use the lid if you don''t want to. I also like the way the heating element is completely sealed and that the kettle detaches from the base (the cordless feature). This kettle''s construction appear to be very good quality, and it has a 1-year warranty. Its water kettle function works great -it boils 1 liter of cold water in about 5 minutes. It being a noodle cooker/ soup warmer is a cool feature that I might use one day. This item also comes with a collander and a cute little metal pasta fork to aid you with cooking noodles. I''m very glad I found this kettle.

I''ve only had this item for 3 weeks now and primarily purchased it for cooking 2 portions of pasta and Ramen noodle soups quickly.. I''ve used it about 15 times so far and here are the results..

The Good:

The pot is extreamly well built and boils water for cooking pasta and soups much quicker than on the stove. The pasta cooking feature works great for 2 cups (dry) of wide egg noodles, as well as Ramen Noodle soups.

It also works great for simply boiling water for tea or any other use, and the automatic shutoff feature is great as well..

The Bad:

Because the electronics are in the pot itself, and not the base, and the manual warns of getting those components wet, the pot is more difficult to clean than it should be. The pot is also not teflon lined, so I would not be inclined to cook cream based soups or other things that might stick.. I also have to agree with another reviewer here about the power cord.. It''s very stiff and unyielding, much more so than necessary in this day and age. When the pot is off the base its basically "the tail wagging the dog". The cord is also hard to store in the base as well.

The Bottom Line.

If you can live with the bad which isn''t really hard to do, it''s a great little appliance and has found a favored spot in my kitchen..

I''ve used electric teakettles for about 25 years. This one promises to last a long time the heating element is self-contained, the pot itself has no holes in it, and thus no gaskets to leak. However, it was designed by someone who never uses an electric teakettle.

It is sloppy to pour, and clumsy to fill (you have to remove the top, which is locked on or is it off? hard to tell by 2 little press tabs). The top always has a large puddle of condensation ready to drip out. It is hard to read the Max and Min labels. Also, I have twice scalded my thumb because of the gap between the handle and the top. Plus, I really cannot imagine someone using both the teakettle and the pasta cooker maybe my son at college, except he wouldn''t trust the plastic drainer. Others are keen on the lack of plastic, but the top is plastic and the pasta strainer is cheap plastic.

I think the scalding concern should make this a good candidate for recall.

Aroma could have made this quite elegant and useful, but instead it is simply klutzy and unsafe.

I bought this item to boil water and cook food without a range after my house burned down. It boils water pretty fast and is great for drip coffee or espresso. You can also throw the tea bags right in it for tea. I cooked pasta in it, and although the cleanup isn''t fun and you have to be careful about the water level so it doesn''t boil over, that works too. For a single serving, it''s so much faster than a stove as well. I also used it for instant oatmeal and to heat soup. You can eat right out of it if you want.

To clean it, I soak it in a vinegar solution overnight, and then it''s easy. I have well water with lots of minerals, so that takes care of the mineral buildup at the same time. I''d never get one that didn''t have a wide opening as it would be horrible to clean! The simple shape and wide opening means you can get right in there with a scrubbie.

I also love that there''s no plastic in contact with the water. I had a plastic one, and one day it shocked me when I placed my finger in the water (the metal heating element didn''t interface well with the plastic container), and the plastic got horribly discolored with iron and tomato sauce.

But, after using the Aroma for four months, I started to smell plastic burning inside the unit. It seemed that it had an electrical issue, and that could cause a fire! Which, after being through a fire and being told by the fire marshal that small appliances are a major cause of house fires, freaked me out! I hope I just got a defective one. I liked its functionality so much I might try another...it''s so versatile and the stainless steel is high quality and thick.

Livart Warm & Cool Dual Humidifier L-281C

Livart Warm & Cool Dual Humidifier L-281CWe bought two of these humidifiers but through a local store, not Amazon. This is an attractive unit with both warm and cool mist options. We really like that there are two nozzles that can be swiveled to where you want the mist directed. It has a capacity that lasts for about a day or so depending on what mist intensity you choose. It is easy to clean and can be run without a filter which leads to lower cost for the long run. It is also very quiet and can be used in a bedroom. I also appreciate that it has a small footprint so takes less room on a counter.

My two wishes for improvements would be to make it a top fill for even easier use and a humidistat so it would shut off at a desired humidity but theses are both minor requests. Overall I am very pleased with this unit.

Love the design and small footprint. We''re using it in the bedroom, so far on warm mist.

There are two openings for the mist that can be place in different directions. It''s easy to fill. We find ourselves filling it every other day, using it on a low setting which is sufficient for our mid to large sized bedroom. I hope it continues to work for a long time.

Unistar 4-in-1 Swamp Cooler with Ionic Air Purifier Save 47% Off

Unistar 4-in-1 Swamp Cooler with Ionic Air Purifier, DF268.pros:

saves you in energy bills since it can cool the room instead of using the ac

filters are washable

the included remote gives you controls even in bed

the 30 min interval timer feature is great specially when it gets too cold at night

cons:

the ionizer feature is more of a display light than anything

needs a weekly maintenance. water mineral builds up at the bottom, if you let it sit for more than a week, taking it out posts a problem.

if you even find the time to actually clean the insides of the fan and and take out the dusts and water deposits, it would take a lot of patients since the machine wasn''t designed for easy disassemble. (you''ll need a thin long screw driver to take out some of the screws.)

bottom line:

machine is great as an alternative humidifier and room fan. It is a high maintenance machine make sure you clean it every week or two.

The air conditioning in my building has not been working, so it has been about 80-85 degrees in our cubicles. With this product, I am actually able to be comfortable. It was very easy to set up and get going and the water lasts a long time between fill ups. I do add ice to the top for more cooling. Three people have bought one since they have seen mine, and others stop by to cool off. I shopped around, and this cooler was about the best price and, as I said in the title, it is also kind of "retro" and cute, as well as functional.

This unit has been perfect for my intended use.

My co-workers prefer to keep our office building a bit warmer than I am comfortable. I have set the Unistar Swamp Cooler in the door of my office, and it effectively keeps my office several degrees cooler than it would otherwise be. I wasn''t sure when I bought it whether it would work in a humid region, and have been very happy that it does. Nor does it make the environment uncomfortable humid. I assume that if the primary central A/C went out, this thing wouldn''t do much of anything, though, in South Carolina.

Also, the manual is a joy to read. Honestly, I''ve read it cover to cover at least three times. It is an excellent and humorous example of non-native translation. Example: "Attention: Any parts of the control panel should be forbidden to be stained with water." Well, it amuses me, anyhow. . .

UPDATED 1 September 2011

I''ve had this swamp cooler for 2.5 years now. I use it every business day. It still performs well. As for maintenance, I had to take it apart to clean it after about a year and a half, and just today had to give it its second cleaning. It takes about twenty minutes to take apart, clean, & put back together -so less than an hour of maintenance time for 2.5 years (in addition to occasionally wiping down the ice basin & rinsing the filter). It''s made out of plastic which I would imagine will only stand up to two or three more overhauls, but it''s not cheaply made to the extent that it should lose a star. This thing is really a champ.

This is a great fan, nice looking, quiet and effective. I use it in my garage apartment and provides a nice comfort level. It is easy to operate and fill in with water. 8 gallon tank requires re-fill every other day. It comes with 4 ice packs. I use 2 at a time with the other two in the fridge and replace the ice packs every day. The top of the unit also has a compartment, where I add ice daily. The only thing that could make this fan better looking is to have a choice on the color. White is great, but would be nice to have a choice for the side light green color.
