AnyWater Mini Bio-Mineral Pot Produces Alkaline Mineral Water PLUS 3 Replacement Filters Save 13% Off

AnyWater Mini Bio-Mineral Pot Produces Alkaline Mineral Water PLUS 3 Replacement FiltersThe people at Best Water Inc. in Canada (the makers of the AnyWater portable filter) are terrific. They''re friendly, they care, and they want to solve your problems. If you send them an email, they''re likely to call you, which is pretty cool. Not many companies do that. If only the product were as good as the customer service.

I love the look of the filter. It''s cute, the colors are nice, the shape is pleasing. It was easy to assemble, but after that my problems began. Though the pot claims it holds 20 oz., the funnel top (where you pour in the water), holds about 12. But not a big deal, right. So you have to fill it twice if you want to drink that much water. A bigger problem is the cartridge failed to drain completely most of the time. And if it doesn''t drain completely then you can''t fit the filter cap on, which you''re supposed to do to pour off the water. I cheated and just lifted the cartridge out of the container and held it over my glass while I poured the water out of the container. A bit awkward and challenging. But I was willing to live with it. Until I discovered that the unit leaks. At first I thought it was because I hadn''t screwed the cartridge piece on securely. But no, it didn''t seem to matter how secure it was. I''m guessing it was the cartridge itself and the fact that it didn''t drain. Customer service suggested I shake the cartridge, which I did. One time it worked. The next time it didn''t. After a while I got a bit fed up. And finally decided they really need to fix the design flaws. Customer Service even admitted that other people have problems with leaking. Faulty cartridges, I suspect.

If you decide to send back your filter beware of the warranty. The web page offers a 30-day warranty and you get a full refund (minus shipping) ONLY if you haven''t used the filter. At all. If you''ve used the filter I thought the 30 days was for trying it out then they deduct a 15% restocking fee. And if you live in the U.S., shipping to Canada can be expensive.

Saeco Black Odea Go Eclipse Super Automatic Espresso Machine Save 24% Off

Saeco Black Odea Go Eclipse Super Automatic Espresso MachineThis is a review by a Coffee Fanatic who has owned several machines, including the $8000 industrial version. I had the Vienna Plus for 8 months and decided to give that away to get the Odea Go.

The Vienna Plus had more water in the dredge drawer.. so much that I first thought the machine was leaking!! Found out that IS the way the machine works.. But the machine was bigger than the Odea, so it had room. I had to clean it out every 6-8 cups made.

The Vienna also allowed me to see the water level, so it was easy to refill.

Now for the ODEA:

Doesn''t matter which model Odea you get, they''re the same build. I was impressed by the BMW-designed mechanics, so I bought it for the sleeker look. Smaller unti fitted well on the small kitchen counter I have.

MAKES STRONGER COFFEE than other models of Saeco that I''ve tried/borrowed/owned/tasted. It''s able to extract more flavor.

PROBLEMS:

1. The water container is smaller than the Vienna. And the tank is hidden, so you can NOT see when it''s time to refill. YOU MUST refill before it''s down to 2 cups left, because the light weight will make the sensor stop working. The sensor is not by water, but by weight of water!

2. The coffee lid can''t be opened while the machine is ON. The other models can. This is weird.. because I used to be able to refill the Vienna while it''s brewing.

3. The dredge drawer needs to be emptied for every 3-4 cups of coffee brewed!! Though it''s not really full, the sensor will not let you brew coffee with water in this drawer!! So you will end up cleaning this every 4 cups max.

4. The drawer can''t be seen, the spills can''t be seen, because of the sleek design, everything is covered. And everything is BLACK, so you can''t see whether you''ve cleaned it very well. Coffee grinds may be hidden in places you can''t see... all gray and black plastic!!

WHEN MY NEW MACHINE WAS 5 WEEKS OLD, THE 3 RED LIGHTS FLASHED QUICKLY which means electrical problems. Turning it off and on did not help. Calling the manufacturer, diagnosed over the phone, and ended up to have to replace it with a new one. IT SIMPLY STOPPED WORKING.

I give this machine 2 stars for the great coffee it has produced for us over the last 11 months. Once you find the beans you like, it''s just wonderful to enjoy a cup of espresso or latte macchiato in the comfort of your own home anytime. We really love the coffee it makes! However, the grinder broke this morning for no particular reason. The machine is still covered by the warranty but an expensive appliance like this should be able to function much longer than 11 months... ''

Like I said, the coffee the Saeco makes is wonderful! I also have to agree with the other reviewer that the water container is very small and that the dredge drawer needs to be emptied fairly often. It''s a bit annoying because you don''t get any warning and if you are in a hurry in the morning... well, no coffee, if the machine needs some kind of attention.

Was so excited to try this out.... First few days were OK. After a while the red alert display would light up even if everything''s filled up. I discovered that the problem lay in the water tank sensor. At first, filling the tank up to the brim would do the trick. After a while, I had to hold on to the water tank (press it towards the machine) just so it won''t light up (and stop) in the middle of a brewing session. I was ready to live with this quick fix, if only to make sure that I had good coffee for breakfast. But just yesterday, even this technique wouldn''t do the trick. I had to bring the machine to a local (I live in the Philippines) Saeco service center. To my dismay, they only honor Philips Saeco warranties and not Saeco warranties. If only I could return the machine to the seller. But the shipping costs alone would not make it worth my while.

I should have paid attention to the reviews posted by other buyers before I made this purchase.

Update 2/21/13: Got the machine back from the service center yesterday and it worked fine. I hope it stays that way for the next five years or so. :-) Apparently, the sensor was not aligned properly so they just had to adjust it. No parts were replaced.

I love the coffee this machine make! As I developed more and more demanding taste in Espresso I have bought more and more machines. This one is the one make the best Espresso, better than the Gaggia I have.

I do not have the reliability problem as mentioned in two previous reviews. The machine runs fine for almost two years now. I regularly clean the drawer (every 2-4 times of use), and only add water made from a filter pitch. This keeps the machine runs smoothly continuously.

Overall, I consider this machine a very good buy for the money.

Counter Top Water Filter System Save 39% Off

Counter Top Water Filter SystemReceived my new countertop water filter in timely fashion and it NOW works well. I had to go to Home Depot to purchase a faucet adaptor ($5.00) as none is included with the product...even though it clearly states it is included. The supplier''s response was basically...it''s your responsibility. The screw on fitting supplied has a female thread while every kitchen faucet I ever owned requires a male thread to attach where the aerator is. The posted ad on Amazon also says 1 Micron filter included, again not so, packing slip says "Filters Sold Seperately" and I was charged an additional $10.89. Also an extra $.79 for a plastic wrench to open the filter. The unit works very well, removing any processed water "smells". A definite plus for a city boy (Philly) looking to ditch the bottled water habit!

We had trouble with our ice having a bit of a nasty plastic/rubber smell and taste. I figured I''d give a filter a try and see if it would work at reducing and/or eliminating it.

I ordered the Whirlpool filter and after a quick and easy installation (as well as running water through it for a couple of minutes to clear up the charcoal particles) I was in business. The smell and taste is completely gone! My ice has no weird smell or taste. Can''t recommend this filter enough.

Having moved recently, we were not happy to note the odd taste of the city water in our area. As our Kenmore refrigerator is the type that dispenses ice and water, we felt that installing an inline filter was a good idea. This filter does a great job of eliminating the strong chlorinated flavor that was in our water. In fact, the difference is so obvious, even our kids commented.

My husband knows his way around a tool box so the installation of this filter was fairly routine for him. However, those who are intimidated by the idea of making burr free cuts in a water line may want to look at a different filtering solution. The filter is fairly small and easily tucks away out of sight behind the appliance without forcing the unit further out into the room.

RO/DI Replacement Filter Kit

RO/DI Replacement Filter KitI needed replacement filters for my Kent Maxxima RODI unit, but I was hesitant to buy these cheaper filters. I decided try them out anyways. They came pretty quickly and they fit just right into my RODI unit. My TDS meter read 75ppm going in and 0ppm coming out. They work perfectly. No fish smell. Water was clean and pure. I use this filter primarily for my reef tank and it''s important that my water quality is top notch. These filters get the job done at an affordable price. Can''t ask for more.

These filters are made in China and give the water coming out a strong fishy smell. Nobody would drink the water coming out of a filter using these. It makes the room stink and smells like you are piping in water from a swamp with dead amimals in it! I thought they were supposed to filter the water making it cleaner not causing it to stink? What were they thinking?

Multipure Aquaversa MP750SB Carbon Block Under-Sink Water Filter Save 4% Off

Multipure Aquaversa MP750SB Carbon Block Under-Sink Water Filter - Includes Faucet
  • # NSF/ANSI certified to standard 42 and 53 and certified by the state of California.
  • Easy to install and convenient to use
  • Filters your water for approximately (1 Year) 750 gallons
  • Enjoy healthier, better tasting water at a fraction of the cost of bottled water

After intensive research, I bought this under the sink water filter to reduce herbicides, and industrial solvents from getting into my body through our water.

However, several agricultural states including State of California

State of Iowa, State of Wisconsin, and State of Massachusetts have certified this water filter to do what the Multi-Pure says it will do --reduce a amount of specific herbicides, industrial chemicals and volatile organic compounds, and certain metals in our tapped water whether it comes from a municipal water treatment system or a private well. It doesn''t mean that all the contaminants that the filter will reduce are in our water, but if we have them in our water, they will be reduced up to 99% or whatever Multi-Pure says they will be reduced. Some water filter companies are not as truthful about their products, so I wanted one certified by NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) to do what it says it will do. I contacted NSF and contacted Multi-Pure until satisfaction on my part was achieved. Then, I made the purchase.

The water is delicious, and recommendations of others have born true as long as the filters are changed regularly once a year or after 750 gallons.

No water filter, contrary to the propaganda in the marketplace, will remove all contaminants, there are not regulations or standards on all contaminants, but Multi-Pure does a good job reducing those it claims.

I wish we could reduce the risk of cancer and other health damage from herbicide drinking agriculture, since our government is protecting the agrochem industry rather than public health.

After living on a Western Washington farm with a 300'' deep well, then the outer reaches of Pacific Northwest coast, with a five home, community well, I and my family were accustomed to the taste of pure, untreated water. Visitors often commented they liked the water, even after we began to take it for granted.

After moving to Tumwater and Olympia, Washington, with their chemically treated water, we missed our well water and began searching for a means of plentiful, quality water.

Initially, I purchased simple filters that screwed onto the tap. They helped, but just didn''t quite produce the quality we were looking for. Too, they were clumsy to use. We progressed to little more expensive counter-top units. Again, an improvement, but not the end solution.

I began more serious searches and, after hours of on-line research, I selected the MULTI-PURE under-counter water filter. It required a hole in the sink to install the on-demand faucet. Initially, I drilled one, but since have used the spray nozzle hole in rentals. From day we installed it, it was a hit. Now, regardless of where I live, the filter system goes with us.

It costs about sixty a year, but that seems little for water I know is 99% pure and that is far and away more convenient than bottled water.

Have you ever drunk water that smelled like it came directly from the swimming pool? We have. My wife couldn''t stomach it and would get her water from the refrig (which runs thru a basic refrigerator filter). I would just hold my breath and swallow the county''s heavily chlorinated tap water (we live in the Tampa Bay area of Florida)...horrible, horrible, smell and taste. I can certainly empathize with the locals that buy bottled water but I can''t appreciated the waste impact on the environment, so I chose the Multipure MP750SB over plastic landfills (first read about the MP750SB in Consumer Reports magazine). I installed the unit on March 30th and immediately the chlorine smell was gone and the water taste was palatable. The MP750SB definitely works as advertised and for that reason is worth every penny (we are big water drinkers). I do have two cautionary comments about the unit for you info: One The bottom of the filter housing is rounded. According to the company, they no longer make the flat bottom housing. So you''ll need to prop-up/balance the unit in a cabinet corner (like I did) or install the mounting hook to the cabinet wall and hang the unit from it. My under-sink cabinet rear wall is about two grades above cardboard (in quality). In my opinion the wall will not sustain the mounting hook screws, especially when the heavy water filled MP750SB is attached. In lieu of improvising a secure wall mounting place for the unit, I chose the lazy way out...balance it in the back corner. It''s been working fine so far. Two The installation manual that came with my unit was for the previous model (flat bottom), that apparently had different parts unattached. In this updated model, parts referenced in the manual have now been permanently attached to the filter housing. So if you think a part is missing, just check the unit housing...it may already be attached. These two observations are in NO way a show stopper. Based on the performance of this unit to date, I highly recommend it for improving the taste quality of public utility drinking water.

I bought the unit installed under the sink with a dispenser valve mounted on the sink MP750SB.

First the good news. The stainless steel canister and filter element seem top notch and designed to last "forever." The sink mounted valve and nozzle also look pretty well built, if just a bit more floppy then I like.

Now the bad news. The hardware and plumbing fittings were defective. First the brass and plastic wing nut that screws onto the threaded brass tube that holds the sink mounted faucet in place was not completely threaded. So, when I went to assemble it, laying very uncomfortably on my back under the sink, it went half on and then locked up! When I tried to remove it, the threaded tube in the faucet assembly then unscrewed! After some struggling I finally got the things apart. Then I re-threaded the brass insert in the plastic wing nut (using a tap size most folks do not have in their home tool kit) and was finally able to mount the valve onto the sink. What should have taken 5 minutes after the hole was drilled, took an hour or so.

More bad news followed. The tubing connectors that screw into the top of the filter were also defective, but not so you would notice at first. The Teflon tape covered up a molded-in step in the threads (part line because of misaligned mold in manufacturing), leaving a small slot across all the threads. That meant one of the fittings leaked when pressure was applied. No amount of tightening would stop the leak. So, stop the installation for the evening, and go out and buy new fittings the next day. (Home Depot: Watts Quick-Connect PL-3004 Adapter 1/4" OD x 1/8" MIP or 8 mm x 3 mm) or (Grainger part number 4HN10 or John Guest part number PI010821S 1/4" x 1/8 nptf). To be fair to the filter manufacturer, Multipure International, these failed connectors were labelled as John Guest parts, and the defects were in their manufacturing. On the other hand, Multipure could make a better effort to quality check the parts it is being sold, especially given its reputation depends on a leak free easy installation.

I called Multipure and told them about the bad parts. To their credit they immediately sent replacements, but by normal mail that took several days. So I fixed and bought replacement parts on my own to get the job done.

A few other notes. It is pretty awkward to clip the filter canister onto the mounting clip, at least up high under the sink, out of the way. Also, the tubing fittings make me nervous. I suggest being very careful to make sure nothing stored under the sink snags the tubes and puts side pressure on these fittings. The instructions suggest changing these fittings on the filter (and the shut off valve?) when you change the filter once a year, again not the sort of instruction that build confidence in a leak free installation. The Adapta Valve assembly used to tap into the cold water supply at the stop valve went on easily and is leak free. However, I would strongly suggest also replacing the faucet connector hose (riser) when reattaching the sink faucet cold water valve. The rubber seal in this line doesn''t seal well when reused, especially if the surface it is seating against in a different shape, as it is in the Adapta Valve assembly. Simply said, the joint between the Adapta Valve and the faucet connector hose (riser) also leaked until I used a new line.

Final results, the water quality is great. It is a shame that Multipure let some bad parts get in the way of a good product.

Pros: Best mechanical/chemical filtering I found for anywhere near the price according to Consumer Reports and the NSF/ANSI websites, as well as those of many competitors''.

Cons: A little pricy. Does not deliver rated flow rate. High maintenance. Dumps a half gallon of water on the floor to change the filter. Does not filter Chrome-6

Delivers approximately .4 gpm at a measured supply pressure of 53 psig. Advertised to deliver .75 gpm @ 60 psig.

The clam shell canister has to be taken apart to change the filter an annual event for most users. The thing holds over a half gallon of water! That''s a tad more than most towels will absorb!

Not a low maintenance device. Instructions come with a list of fittings and seals they recommend you change "every couple of years".

Hexavalent Chrome (Chrome-6) is a problem in some areas near us. However, I''ve only found one system that filters it out, a pour-through pitcher type.

I opted for an under the counter carbon block system for convenience and effectiveness, and the fact I''d just learned my Brita pitcher system only made the water taste better and didn''t even filter out lead. I decided to avoid Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems because they waste three to four times as much water back-flushing the membrane as they produce. They also filter out minerals that are good for you leaving the water tasting flat. I avoided distillation systems as they use too much energy and also leave the water tasting flat. I''m going into my third day still chasing leaks. That''s not the product''s fault but comes with the territory every time I stick my fat fingers under a sink! Plumbing is as much an art as it is a science I''ve determined.

The price of the replacement carafe was expensive, but we felt it was worth it given the excellent performance of the coffeemaker. This replacement carafe came in a box as if I were taking it off the shelf at Target, with no additional packing. Of oourse, it was broken. I called the company, who issued a credit immediately, and went to Target and bought a Mr. Cofffee carafe (as suggested by one of the previous reviewers) at half the price. This Mr. Coffee carafe has worked very well. Sort of glad that it worked out this way saved me some dollars!

So if I were reviewing the carafe on basic functionality, it gets the job done. It keeps all hot fluids contained and pours easily into mugs of various shapes and sizes. I purchased this as a replacement because my first carafe broke. This brings me to the flimsy part... my carafe broke while in my draining board. A glass (also in the draining board) was bumped and it fell on the carafe. The glass survived, the carafe did not. Granted, I do not expect my coffee carafe to survive a 3 foot fall to the ground, a good bump by my cast iron skillet, or nuclear winter for that matter, but it couldn''t stand up to a wimpy object... made of the same material, albeit more sturdily constructed.

I bought this new carafe for my KitchenAid Pro Line Coffee Maker because the original carafe was in a buzillion pieces when the coffee maker arrived. There were tips online that coffee carafes from Mr. Coffee and others would work, but that''s not the way I operate, so I bought this new carafe on Amazon and found it to be a fine purchase. It feels somewhat fragile but I don''t know how true that is. It''s not heavy at all and is easy to fill and clean. It also comes with an orange lid for when you make decaf. All in all, it was a great product that looks sharp and I had no problems with the shipper or Amazon. Thanks!

Installation took about an hour and a half, drilling, plumbing hookups, tightening screws, and what not. (I watched in anticipation lol)

After installation I let it run through for a couple of minutes, tried a sip, and then immediately used the chlorine testing strips provided which proved perfect chlorine filtration!

The water taste is awesome. No funny smells or tastes, just pure water. You would think you had dipped a cup into a pure mountain spring.

  • The Culligan WBA bracket is made of zinc coated steel.

This is a very strong steel bracket. It comes with all the needed hardware (bolts) to mount your Culligan HD-950A water filter. My only complaint is that this bracket should come with the water filter (minus one star). The water filter is too large to use without support. Some people will place an object underneath the filter to hold it up. The only problem with that is when you change the water filter, you are putting undesirable pressure and stress on your water line and fittings as you unscrew the bottom. That''s why you need this bracket if you own a Culligan HD-950A water filter. It may also work with similar sized water filters as well.

Optimus U-31005 2.0 Gallon Cool Mist Ultrasonic Humidifier Save $0.02 Off

Optimus U-31005 2.0 Gallon Cool Mist Ultrasonic HumidifierThis Humidifier is so much better than the fancy one by sharper image that I had and then returned;

1. It only has one tank to fill (1.6 gallon capacity). It was a pain to have to fill each of the two tanks on the Sharper Image one.

2. It actually has a humidistat control. The more expensive(way more) sharper image one did not.

3. It has a built-in ionizer. (I don''t use it, but still)

4. PRICE; Other fancier looking humidifiers will cost way more and have way less features.

5. The tank has a pretty big opening to pour water in. This makes it easier to fill. I also like that it will stand up on a flat surface while refilling it.

My only gripes:

1. Just to make it clear, power consumption is 45W. I wish Optimus would have printed that in the manual or on the box instead of me having to look on the underside of the unit''s base for this piece of info. I''m not complaining about how much power it takes; just make the information easier to find, Optimus.

2. The humidistat control doesn''t show what relative humidity % you have it set at. You kinda have to guess or use a hygrometer to know for sure. If it had a digital readout on the Humidistat, this would be 5 stars for sure. This is not really a complaint for me, but just a way they could make the product even better.

Overall this is a good one because it has a decent sized water tank and will keep the humidity at a constant level without having to fiddle with the dials constantly. It is pretty much set it and forget it except for refilling it with water of course. A little tip: use reverse osmosis or distilled water in it and you''ll probably rarely, if ever, have to clean it.

I received this item on the 11th of February. From the moment I turned it on it worked perfectly. The unit makes litterally no noise. The output is perfect for a medium sized room. It even has an ionizer built in. The comfort since its activation in the room is 10 fold. We do not wake up with dry lips or mouth. It''s easier to breathe. Overall I would highly recommend this humidifer. For the quality and price its a steal.

BestAir A10-6 Aprilaire 10 Metal Waterpad

BestAir A10-6 Aprilaire 10 Metal WaterpadThis is the metal type mesh that the water runs down for the furnace humidifier. It installs easily and works great. It has a black paint mark on top to advise this side up when installed. Good product.

I ordered this product hoping that the filters would be the correct ones....many times they are not even though the vendor describes them as such. These shipped quickly and the filters were exactly what I needed.

My wife and I had never changed the old pad in our whole house humidifier. I figured it was time, given the crusty accumulations on our old pad. Before we changed the pad, I have to say that the efficiency of our humidifier wasn''t as good. It seemed to take days for the humidity in the house to go up when I would adjust the humidistat. After changing the old pad, the efficiency was noticeably better right away. Adjustments resulted in changes to our household humidity in less than 24 hours. If you are like me and you are wondering how much of your pad actually gets replaced, you will find that the pad in your humidifier actually has a black frame that comes apart. This is the frame that has the water line attached to it. Once you open the frame, you can discard the mesh metal pad and insert this new pad. It will fit perfectly. I''ll be coming back for more of these in the future, and I would highly recommend them to anybody.

Hydronix 4.5" x 20" Big Blue Sediment Filter Cartridge

Hydronix 4.5'' x 20'' Big Blue Sediment Filter Cartridge - 1 MicronI was looking through all the vendors that were selling this product. At the time this sediment cartridge was selling for an INSANELY low price. I wonder if the price was a typo! I went ahead and bought 6 of them. Looking back, maybe I should have bought even more since you don''t see that price anywhere. And this vendor has since changed the price on this product (at the time of writing this review). I usually see 50 microns, 20, or 10 microns, but a ONE-micron filter at $10 each was a steal!

Now, the packaging was a little concerning. Each cartridge was in its own plastic wrap. However, as a whole there is only one thin bubble wrap laying on top when I opened box. Not only that, during shipment the contents had shifted and half of the bubble wrap had slipped to the side, so only half of the top was protected. The sides and bottom offered no protection. There were a couple cartridges that sustained damages. One had the plastic wrap that was half coming off, and the only way to rip that plastic wrap was from a heavy drop. Another had dents on the side from whatever impact it sustained during shipment. The cartridges were still usable.

Overall, it was good product at a very cheap price at the time.

Very good filter, super quality. It does the job as promised catches all sediment greater then 1 micron. Description correct, price better then other sites. Highly recommended.

Purenex FT-1 Countertop Water Filter System
  • Reduces Chlorine taste & odors and improves taste
  • Features 1 Micron Solid carbon block Filter Cartridge
  • Easy to install and use - Inexpensive and Convenient
  • Great tasting more healthy water
  • Convenient - quality water right at your tap.

Just wanted to note a correction to the lengthy review previously posted 2/13/08 by Waterboy, which stated that this Bestfilters Countertop model was the same as the Paragon mdl 2900ct. This is not the case. I do not know if there is any difference in the filtering abilities of either (likely not) but I do know that this Bestfilters unit has a metal spout mounted on the side, instead of the built-in upper plastic spout of the Paragon, and comes w/a KX Industries-made "KX Matrikx PB1" filter cartridge inside -not one made by Paragon, and takes industry standard 10" sized replacement filters.

With carbon block filters such as these of the same size/construction, no brand make is better than another''s. The only way to improve your filtration (other than getting a reverse osmosis system) is to increase the amount of filter media the water passes through. So either add an additional filter unit in-line, or get a unit that takes a larger carbon filter. Or to lesser extent, slow down the flow of water passing through the filter, for more filter media contact time.

It''s good to have a unit that takes a non-proprietary filter, as it gives you options of where and what to buy re replacement filters. Learned when my old PUR countertop unit''s repl filters were discontinued. This Bestfilters model accepts a standard 10" cartridge; I am not sure if the Paragon does or not.

ps. the other model non-replaceable filter "maintenance-free" countertop units made by Paragon do Not have as good a filter as the ones noted above, and Paragon CS told me they were designed to remove only chlorine for taste/odor reduction.

I just moved from WA state to San Jose, CA and was disgusted by the taste and smell of the city water here. It may meet regs for safety, but who cares if nobody can stand to drink it? In desperation, I went to buy a small faucet Brita unit and it barely touched the stink and taste, so I knew I needed something with more carbon contact time and capacity. All the hardware stores wanted to sell the big undersink units and I''m not about to install that in a rental, so a countertop was what I needed. None of the stores I went to had them, so Amazon to the rescue.

This BestFilters unit is the cure for BAD water and the flow rate is really good. Supposed to last for 2500 gallons but I dont believe it. Maybe with normal water, but this San Jose stuff should trash it in half that time. Even so, still a good deal compared to the small toy filters for the faucet. This one installs in minutes and bam!, instant bottled water taste/quality. Highly recommended.

Great filter, great price, and a low cost of ownership...

Though I want to be forward with my biases. I am convinced water filters and bottled water for health reasons are unnecessary for cityfolk... what comes to your house if you get city water is very likely to be fine... in fact.. great; compared to what the rest of the world drinks, and especially compared to what people used to drink.

It may smell or taste funny, but not because its bad for you. Tests are conducted at the water treatment facility constantly, and they send you, and the powers that be, a water quality report regularly. Learn to read it. You will see that from the source, the municipal water standards are better than a) bottled water must be, and b) what most filters actually filter out.

That said... bottled water is usually just tap water... and filtered only for flavor, and maybe a little sodium added. Sometimes your really unlucky, and its well water (or gravity fed spring water) or artesian well water (lower water table under pressure.. less organic toxins, and more inorganic ones)... measured via the inferior FDA standards for water, and then only if its brought over state lines. Remember the FDA are the people that think less than 2% bug guts and rat poop in food is just fine.

I trust my unfiltered tap water over bottled water.

Most filters? They are one of two things... aesthetic filters that remove the most common substances that cause bad flavors, odor, and color (water pitchers, disposable filters, whole house filters, faucet mounts), possibly leaving all kinds of stuff you don''t want in your mouth, or something like ultraviolet sterilization that leaves all the bad non-living substances but kills germs, or ceramics that are little better than aesthetic filters, or reverse osmosis filters that create a mineral free water which replaces those minerals with whatever it touches, like the container its in, or the carbon dioxide in the air... becoming acidic.. dissolving more potentially nasty stuff...

I trust my unfiltered tap over a bad filter.

Oh... long story short; You get this filter, and you live in the city, and you got this water thing licked. Its going to taste good, and that 1 micron filter will give you all the peace of mind you need. Even if your water was as scary as you fear, this filter would take care of it. Lead, chlorine, copper, cryptosporidium, volatile organic chemicals, plastic softeners, all out. You get a replacement filter every six months for $30 and you''ll be just fine. You''ll spend less on this superior housing and filter than you will on anything else out there now... even the junk that doesn''t work is more expensive.

This filter is great. Its manufactured by Paragon and is often rebranded..

Look closely, and you''ll see that this is the same model as the chrome filter that sells from Gaiam for $100, and the same as the chrome model that sells from Amazon from this store (Bestfilters) for $88... they both use the exact same filter cartridge inside.

The extra $30-50 is for chrome colored plastic and maybe a brand. My suggestion is to save your money. Go with the white plastic. If you don''t, you are probably a sucker, and would better enjoy a $350 filter that does the same thing as this one. May I suggest Multipure, or any other filter from a multilevel marketing company?

Buy this and you are getting a good deal.

What about quality? Don''t take my word for it... check the reviews on this model (the 2900) and the Chrome model (the 3200). On every site I could find the average review is 4.5 to 5 stars. I definitely give it that as well. It does what its supposed to.

Secondly, many companies put their reputations on the line when they rebrand and put their name on these filters. The quality is there. This filter isn''t going to break in six months and flood your counter like... the Aquasana countertop filter reportedly does... constantly.

If you don''t have municipal water... then you should be getting your well, or canteen, or cistern, or whatever the heck you have tested regularly. Consult a professional (not Amazon reviews) for your special needs... you probably don''t have a countertop to set this filter on anyway... :)

One more bias... I am a bartender. I have nothing to do with the water filter industry, despite my glowing review of this one product. I''ve spent all this time learning about water because I was very nearly fooled by a waterfiltercomparisons web site that pretends to be unbiased, but is actually run by the president of a water filter company... complete with fake ''consumers digest" award... (I challenge you to subscribe to consumer''s digest. go ahead. try.) It made me angry.

I spent a day on the national science foundation website reading about water filters and looking through their database of certifications (and picking the best of the best), and even went so far as to track down and interrogate a Paragon engineer about their filters. I actually read my municipal water report, and spent the time researching it long enough to understand what it said. I watched a half hour tv program about water, its bottling history (a scam 100 years ago), where it comes from, and how its treated. I read New York Times editorials about why we should be drinking tap water... and on and on...

I did all that so I wouldn''t be scammed. I''ve written all of this so you won''t be scammed either.

This is an amazing product that is easy to install and works so well you''ll wonder why you ever bothered to schlep bottled water into you house in the past. The water from this filter tastes clean and fresh. The price is excellent for all it does. It''s easy to wonder if the original marketer Sears is trying to downplay its availability because it works better than most of their much more expensive models.

The one serious flaw is that earlier models have a plastic tube that connects the faust to the unit, and the plastic breaks, splits or shears off easily. I got two broken ones in the mail and had to return them for exchange. But newer models seem to have a connector made of metal that is much more durable. Be sure to get that style.

Product is simple to install, only takes a couple of minutes. Water comes out clean with no odor and a great taste.

Pros:

-Unit can be used with many 10 inch water filters, not just one particular brand.

-Simple to use.

-No leakage between filter attachment and faucet.

Cons:

-Water comes out of the spout for a couple seconds after faucet is turned off.

-No indicator for filter replacement.

So far, I am happy with my purchase.

Starbrand Products Gevalia 12-Cup Coffeemaker

Starbrand Products Gevalia 12-Cup CoffeemakerI got this free from a Gevalia offer bought 2 pounds of coffee, didn''t even have to pay s/h. I liked the looks of it we got the black with stainless steel.

That said, I would never have paid any amount of money for this. The first one broke within a week. It worked for a few days. Then, the coffee came out cold. Then, it stopped working completely.

Gevalia sent a free replacement (the guy on the phone admitted, off the record, that these things break often). They didn''t need the old one back, so I opened it up to see if it could be repaired (a hobby of mine).

No surprise that ALL the parts came from Asia. I also discovered that BOTH the pump and the heating element broke, separately. So even if I fixed/replaced the pump, the coffee would still come out cold. This is quite amazing to me, since my previous coffee maker still works after nearly 20 years, and after having been dropped many times. Oddly, the wiring was sturdy & just fine (side note: a high percent of appliance problems/failures are simply frayed wires, which can be easily mended with electrical tape, even by a novice, in under 5 minutes).

The replacement unit came & works (almost 2 years old now). But I still have major problems with it:

Pros:

* Stainless/black steel looks sleek

* Digital clock

* Auto-shutoff

* Reservoir float indicator is nice

Cons:

* "Pause & pour" does NOT work well. Only works 50% of the time, again, due to bad design. The rest of the time it makes a huge mess. This was the case on both my units.

* The stainless finish gets dirty easily

* There is no backup battery, so the clock resets every time you unplug the unit.

* The pump will definitely not last long it''s overworked due to poor design/layout.

* Because it''s a top-load pump & filter, the steam comes up through the top. You cannot change the filter for 20 minutes, without risk of scalding yourself. It would be very difficult to make 2 consecutive pots of coffee (i.e., if you have guests). Plus, the excessive steam warped the cabinets above the unit.

* The worst problem the reservoir is only about 1" in diameter. It''s impossible to load it without spilling.

-> Bottom line: Looks nice, but I''ve never heard of such a difficult, problematic coffee maker. This almost seems like a practical joke by some engineers, or perhaps designed by someone who has never used a coffee maker before. Avoid this one.

This is your basic coffee maker.

Things you should know:

The "stainless" finish is actually grey paint. That''s fine; it doesn''t look bad. I would actually describe the color as "aluminum".

It uses cone filters. This is a plus, and what separates this maker from, say, a Mr. Coffee. The rest of it is basically the same thing. Ancient technology.

If you pull the carafe out while coffee''s dripping, it''ll stop -a "pause" feature. Don''t they all do that nowadays?

I never use the timer/programmability feature. As stated elsewhere, the clock has no battery, so, if you unplug it, you have to reset the time. My stove and microwave both have much bigger/brighter/better clocks, so those are my main ones. The main advantage of the electronic on/off switch is that it will switch itself off after some time, in case you forget. Not having the house burn down is always welcome.

There is a water tank float gauge on the side, so you can tell exactly what the water level is. This is nice, especially if you can reach the maker using your sink sprayer, to fill it. (I can''t, but wish I could.)

My main complaint? The carafe dribbles when pouring coffee. You have to do it slowly. It''s kind of annoying -but not enough to make me buy another one; I''m just going to wait until this one dies. (I''ve been waiting a while now. Murphy''s Law.)

A friend of mine gave me her Cuisinart grind and brew, real stainless, $200 coffee maker. It turned out to be ridiculously complicated and hard to clean and missing some basic feature this one had, so I went back to this simple Gevalia. Simple + reliable = good.

As stated elsewhere, this is the kind of machine you get when you sign up for Gevalia''s coffee club. (I didn''t do this. I think I bought it used on a leading auction website.)

Would I buy again? Probably. I''d want one that has all the same features, minimum.

Over 3 months ago in early January, 2009, I ordered a replacement carafe for the "free" coffee maker they sent me. The wrong one was sent. I called and was assured they would send me a return address label. After a month, I called again and was told the same thing. The third time I asked for a supervisor and was told it would be handled. The forth time, I threatened to put up a youtube video and promised results. This was Andy employee number 643113 on April 2. Still nothing in the mail. On April 20 I called again and was told that my credit card had been refunded, but to get the proper carafe I had to re-order and be charged. I said, "You have got to be kidding. After 3 months of hell?" I still have not heard from them, nor do I expect to. I am stuck with the wrong carafe cluttering my house. I sent this review to Gevalia and they simply repeated their new song: your account was refunded to get the correct carafe, re-order. Fat chance!

I have owned this coffee maker for about 3 years now and never had a problem with it. Some people complain of dishwasher issues, but I never had a problem. I am getting a second one for $20 from the company website with one of their specials. My roommate insists on brewing coffee at the same time as me, so we are getting a second coffee maker. As with all products, not every single one of them is going to be great. I think the bad reviews are misrepresenting the many owners of this product out there. Plus the coffee is pretty good if you get it with a special on their website.

As for features, a lot of programmable coffee makers make it too complicated to brew a pot of coffee. One button for this and another button to set a brew time and 2 buttons for hour and minute. Very simple and no need for 12 buttons on a coffee pot. Plus the pot stops brewing for a little while if you want to pour coffee before all of it is brewed. Great feature. I will admit it is sometimes difficult to pour water into the resevoir whithout spilling, but I have become an expert!

I got this coffeemaker for $14.95 from the Gevalia website with a stainless steel scoop and pound of coffee included. Not sure why anyone would pay $100+ dollars for it when they offer it on their site for next to nothing. That aside this is a great coffeemaker. It has pause and serve feature, so you don''t have to wait for it to finish brewing a full pot to pour a cup of coffee. The stainless steel look is perfect for kitchens with or without stainless appliances. All the functions work perfectly and the coffee they offer is GREAT coffee!

Cuisinart CPK-17 PerfecTemp 1.7-Liter Stainless Steel Cordless Electric Kettle Save 55% Off

Cuisinart CPK-17 PerfecTemp 1.7-Liter Stainless Steel Cordless Electric KettleThis kettle is everything you could want! I use it mostly for french press coffee, but my guests have used it for various kinds of tea, instant oatmeal, or hot chocolate with great success.

I did a lot of research on these kettles, and I found that the one thing to avoid was kettles with plastic insides. Every single one with plastic innards had comments about plastic taste in the water. Stainless and glass interiors didn''t have this problem, but glass was more susceptable to scale buildup. So I went with stainless. There aren''t many of these kettles with stainless insides, and the ones there are are generally more expensive. I looked at the Breville and some others, but they were simply too much money. This one, while not cheap, offered a great feature set, accurate temperatures, stainless interior, good controls, unobstrusive base, and pretty nice aesthetics.

The kettle is easy to fill, solidly built, and heats water very fast. It finishes its heat cycle with an authoritative BEEP that I can hear from the next room as I watch Sports Center. Another bonus is that even once it has reached temperature, it will keep the water at that temperature for up to 30 minutes, so if I''m busy doing something else, my kettle can wait until I get there, and my water isn''t too cold or too hot! The most important thing about a good cup of french press coffee, besides the beans, is the temperature of the water.

The base is very minimal and you don''t even notice it when the kettle is sitting on it, it looks like one piece of the kettle. The controls are easy to reach while holding the kettle by the handle, and the little LED light on the water level indicator is bright and helps you see the water level in a dimly lit early morning kitchen. It also automatically shuts off after a bit if the kettle heat has been turned off. The kettle will turn off automatically after a certain amount of time, but it also is easy to turn off once you''ve poured out your needed water by pressing the "keep warm" button again.

Cleaning is as easy as making a water/white vinegar mixture and letting the kettle boil for 10-15 minutes, then rinsing it out a few times. This removes lime scale deposits and calcification.

For the build quality, looks, features, and performance, I can''t rate this kettle high enough! Look no further!

UPDATE: 1/22/2013: 2.5 years later and still going strong and loving it. I haven''t really cleaned it, but it still looks and performs like brand new.

UPDATE: 1/6/2012: 1.5 years later not much to report, still working without any issues with daily use and 175 degrees is preferred temperature.

We''ve owned Krups FLF2-J1 electric kettle for about 4 years and while it was doing the job I secretely hated it for various reasons until I ran into CPK-17. While there were no reviews when I first saw it I decided to pull the plug anyway and I wasn''t dissapointed.

Pros:

Selectable temperatures = No more burning toungs!

No smell that I detect

Stylish looking

Fits a cup more then Krups

Nice blue led when in operation

Surprsingly quieter then Krups

Beeps when ready

Keeps it warm for 30 minuites

Faster tea preparation when selecting lower temps

Cap opens with a push of a button (Krups had a twist off)

Neutral:

Price for some

Some plastic there, but not too much

Cons:

They didn''t make one 4 years ago

Stains on Stainless Steel already

Time will tell, but so far I haven''t found a better option amongst all electric kettles.

Buy Cuisinart CPK-17 PerfecTemp 1.7-Liter Stainless Steel Cordless Electric Kettle Now

I did pretty extensive research before buying an electric kettle. The CPK-17 appealed to me on a few different levels. I liked the design, the materials used and the functionality. Although it''s nice to have the option of different temperature settings, it''s really only useful if you drink a lot of tea, which I don''t. I generally use the "French Press" and "Keep Warm" settings, and there''s also a Boil option (which is the next setting up from French Press). On the design side, it''s a great looking appliance made from mostly stainless steel. Of course a big concern of mine is the use of BPA-leaching plastic in many kettles on the market, but there appears to be none on the interior of the CPK-17. The water level, as far as I can see, is covered with another sheet of steel. The only non-steel component I see on the kettle''s interior is a silicone nub near the bottom, which nearly all kettles have and which are also heat-resistant. Another thing I like about the CPK-17''s design is the 360-degree swivel capability of the kettle while resting on its heating element. And of course, the illuminated water level (on when the kettle is in use) is very attractive a nice soft blue color. The pouring spout is perfectly-shaped which makes for a fool-proof pour every time. In terms of functionality, the CPK works exactly as advertised. Heat-up time is quick and the controls are responsive.

The major complaint I have with the CPK-17 is the fact that it''s already scaling at the bottom and I''ve only had the kettle for 2 weeks. To me, this is crazy especially considering I use filtered water by Multi-pure (one of the most advanced filtration systems available), so the water is as clean as it gets before it even goes into the kettle. No chlorine, no calcium, no lime -so what''s with the scaling deposits already? It''s annoying, and I wonder if other owners have had similar issues. Anyway, I''m giving this product 4 stars. To recap...

Pros:

great design, little if any interior plastic

smooth functioning, fast heat-up

Cons:

Scales easily after only a few uses

Pricey

Hi.

I almost never write reviews but I believe this one deserve it.

I purchased this kettle from Amazon 6 months ago for $99. I really like the thermometer and could live with the stainless steel look. It worked like a champ until about 2 wks ago when I begin noticing how unusually long it is boiling. I use my kettles a lot for tea, hot water...pretty much 5-10 times a day. One time the water was boiling for close to 3 mins with scalding water splattering out of the spout. My husband suggested I wait no longer for it to shut off automatically and do it manually before it blows up.

That''s when I contacted Cuisinart Customer Service only to learn that the only thing I can get from them is an exchange with me paying shipping both ways....NO thanks, I am not interested in spending any more of my money on something that may fail again.

So I called Amazon and begged them to take this kettle back and give me a refund. Amazon came thru and I got $79 back today.

I did lose $20 and my faith in Cuisinart products but at least Amazon didn''t fail me. Thanks Amazon.

PS: When I took the base of the kettle off to ship it back to Amazon I noticed that it has been leaking under the base.

Want Cuisinart CPK-17 PerfecTemp 1.7-Liter Stainless Steel Cordless Electric Kettle Discount?

I was on the fence for awhile between this kettle, the Breville Temp Select or a Zojirushi Water Heater/Dispenser. I was previously using a stainless stove top kettle, which made it a bit tricky at times, to get the water to the right temperature for the tea I was brewing. I decided on this one because it does everything I want it to do; boils water quickly and provides various water temperatures for different varieties of tea. It was also at a reasonable price point. I brew whole leaf tea and this makes brewing a fresh cup an absolute breeze! Easy to use, aesthetically pleasing and so far, nothing I would change!

Update 4/29/11

Purchased this Kettle in 10/10

It is now going to hit the trash.

It no longer heats up at all and I contacted Cuisinart.

They will send me a new unit if I pay shipping both ways, no way!

Not heavily used at all and very disappointed!

Thankfully, I have a traditional stove top kettle to use in it''s place.

Everything made today seems to be so disposable and not made to last.....sad!
