After going on a search for a product that would deal effectively with hexavalent chromium-6 and discovering that reverse osmosis was the best choice, I started looking for the recommended standards for a good system--which included 5 stages (for filtering effectiveness and to extend the life of the membrane), among other things. The other really critical component was an alkaline post-filter to reinsert a healthy dose of minerals so that the final water was not overly acidic and closer to natural spring water (very few systems offer that). I was also hoping for a countertop model that was totally portable, since I''m living in a rental and didn''t want to deal with installing a spigot on the sink. This unit provides all that and more (leak detector, filter replacement indicator, etc.). My only small disappointment was an error in the original product description, indicating the unit had carbon block pre-filters (slightly better quality than the granular activated carbon filters that it actually has). However, the Healthy Water Supply distributor bent over backwards to offer compensation for the error once discovered (now corrected in the description). I was extremely impressed with his integrity as a businessman (itself very unusual these days!)--and have kept the unit because I am extremely impressed with it overall. This Electric Kettle is quite simple without any frills. For the price, it does what it claims to do. It boils water quickly , the water level is easy to see and has the auto-shut off feature. I have used it reliably to boil water for tea, oatmeal etc. The water is quite hot, so use caution when pouring it out. The lid , can sometimes be hard to close & open.

I first became hooked on electric kettles when traveling in the U.K. and have kept putting off getting one. This is perfect for my six (O, heavens did I really say six!) cups of tea a day. Despite boiling and dumping out the water a half-dozen times, the water itself STILL tasted like "plastic." Ick. As a tea drinker, the quality of the water is key. Also, I found the general shape difficult to handle, the lid was hard to open, and when gently pouring the water it consistently (and dangerously) sloshed out the sides near the spout.

Anyway, I ended up giving this one away and buying an additional Bodum electric kettle for the office. It''s working great, just like the 10-year-old Bodum I take traveling. This is a nice little electric tea kettle. It requires that you heat at least 1 and 1/2 cups of water because of the submerged coil. I especially like the detachable cord.

My concerns are two fold. First, the sides do get hot. The handle remains cool, but I would not trust small children to be near it. Second, for the automatic shuttoff to work, the lid MUST be snapped closed. It will continue to boil if the lid is not completely closed (the instructions do state this). This is why I only gave it 4 stars.

It took me 7 minutes to boil (to auto-shutoff) a full pot (4 cups). The minimum (1 and 1/2 cups) took 2 min 50 sec.

It is supposed to be a 1000 watt heating element. Measuring it with a "Kill A Watt" meter, I found it actually used only 850-880 watts.

Update January 2013: After more than 7 years, this kettle is still in use boiling a single cup of water at my work approx 4 times per week. That is over 1000 uses. A few times the detachable cord was not in all the way, and when I turned it on, the on light did not turn on. Simply pushing it in fixed It. The heating element does appear to have some wear, as its got a few pitting marks. This is to be expected. Other than that there have been no problems. I would still rate it 4 stars.

Water purity and taste are the main issues for me here. Before I bought this item to use at work, I often used a stainless steel kettle on the stove at home. That water was fine of course, but this item makes water taste, smell, and even look plasticky (when light reflects inside the cup it looks oily and there is an oily film on top of the water). I can still taste and smell it even after I''ve brewed my tea.

I figured this might be normal for the first time using it, so I kept using it. I''ve used it over a week, probably 6 or 7 times, and there is no improvement. I haven''t tried vinegar or anything like that, so I''m not sure if that will help... but even if it does, I don''t really trust that plastic isn''t getting into my water. I drink a lot of tea and water purity is important. If it''s important to you too, I''d say spend a bit more and get a stainless steel model.

Aside from that major problem, no issues. water boils fast and quiet.

This is my 3rd Aprilaire 600 and they were all worth every penny. (The 600 used to be called the 600A, now both are automatic and the 600''s electronics are slightly updated.) The 600 can be switched to manual mode, if desired.

My first unit was in my last house and was run for 2 years with no issues, then we moved. I just installed 2 in my current house (since I have 2 furnaces, 1 for each floor). I set it to humidity level #5 out of 7, which sets the relative humidity to 35% when the outdoor temperature is about 20 degrees F (details in the manual). The unit automatically turns on when the furnace is running and there is a call for more humidity. The unit can turn on your furnace blower in order to add humidity even when the furnace is not running, but I didn''t want that option, so I didn''t wire it in. If you do wire it in, there is a switch on the control unit so that you can turn it on or off.

Pros

* It''s automatic and comes with an outdoor temperature sensor. This allows the unit to automatically adjust the humidity level so that you don''t get condensation on your windows (condensation and the associated mold growth are why some home inspectors do not recommend humidifiers.)

* For us, it reduces nose bleeds and sinus infections.

* No standing water for mold to grow in. No individual room units to clean and refill.

* Works great, turn it on as the weather starts to get cold (also turn on the water to it and turn the lever to open the built in damper) and turn it off as the weather warms up.

* Low maintenance: Replace the water panel 1 time per year

* Low repair costs: There''s no fan or extraneous parts. The only moving part is the valve that turns on and off the water. The value is quick and cheap to replace if it ever builds up enough sediment or mineralization to impede function.

* Low upkeep: The manual says to replace the water distribution tray and valve solenoid every ~5 years. All the parts are easy to access and relatively cheap. After 2 years my original water distribution tray showed no wear and I don''t think it will really need to be replaced.

* Integrates with the electrical power in your furnace, so there''s no extra wiring (assuming your furnace is new enough to have the jumpers.)

* Completely silent.

* Uses almost no electricity

* I did not notice a decrease in air flow coming out of vents throughout the house.

* Easy to install if you are handy. Our local Heating guys charge about $450 to install these and it only takes them 2 hours. I did it myself in about 4-6 hours. All the tools you really need are sheet metal snips, a good drill to put in sheet metal screws, a wrench for tightening plumbing connections, wire strippers, and ideally a 3/4" metal drill bit to install the electronic control. Installation instructions are included in the box, including wiring instructions. The instructions aren''t idiot proof, but they''re easy to follow for a handy person.

Cons

* Some water is wasted as unevaporated water does drain out the bottom. While I don''t want water wasted, I actually think this is a preferable design. I don''t want to waste electricity heating the water to create steam and I don''t want a tray of standing water for mold or bacteria to grow in (the 400 model has a tray of standing water and no drain, but is otherwise the same as the 600.) I haven''t noticed a change in my water bill since installing these units.

* A drain is required. I directed mine into my air conditioner''s condensation drain which feeds to the sump pump. No problem. It it''s a problem for you, try the 400 model.

Function

The unit works by taking air that has been heated by your furnace and passes it through a panel that has a small amount of water running across it. The water panel looks a bit like a radiator. The water on the panel evaporates into the hot air and gets distributed through your existing ductwork. That''s it, nothing fancy. Note that, just like any humidifier, the unit is more efficient if you connect it to hot water rather than cold.

If you decide to install it yourself and go against the recommendation to have a professional do it, you''ll also need the following:

#8 sheet metal screws

1/4" copper water line

1/2" ID clear vinyl tubing for drain

Clamp to attach the vinyl drain tubing to the humidifier

Small wire nuts

6" start collar for bypass connection

6" 90 degree elbow(s) for bypass connection

6" pipe for bypass connection

18-2 thermostat wire (a few feet of 18-5 may be helpful to go between the humidifier and your furnace, but 18-2 will work there as well)

Depending on your furnace, 2 quick disconnect electrical plugs may be needed to connect the included transformer to your furnace''s power.

If furnace circuit board does not include humidifier accessory terminals an Aprilaire #50 Current Sensing Relay will be needed.

Optional Duct tape (don''t use fabric tape, UL rated foil backed tape will last much longer and won''t burn) or mastic will improve heating efficiency.

Optional you may want to feed the vinyl drain tubing inside a 3/4" PVC drain to make sure if doesn''t get damaged or knocked out of your drain.

I consider myself to be a fairly handy homeowner but after receiving the item and reading the directions I opted to pay a professional for the install. I am glad that I did. I had estimates in my area to do the install between $250 and $350 over the cost of the unit.

Everything on this unit is automatic. A hard wire runs outside of the house to monitor the outside air temperature.

The only question that I had before I bought the unit was weather the 3 gallons per hour of water ran 24/7 or not. The answer is that it does not. A solenoid only lets the water run when the unit needs to add humidity.

I am more satisfied with this product than I expected to be.

It''s a great product and it works extremely well when set to full automatic. The outdoor temperature sensor needs to be installed for automatic mode for proper relative humidity and to avoid window condensation. Yeah it takes some time to install it properly but well worth it. When it''s set to automatic it will actually kick on your blower periodically even without a call for heat to get an accurate check of the humidity levels and stay on if they are low. The automatic mode helps tremendously after the heat runs and it needs to stay on for a bit to keep the levels accurate. I also found this setup to be useful in reducing cold spots in the house and to help maintain even temperatures kind of like a 2-stage furnace would. With a flip of a switch it can be set to manual and will only run if there is a call for heat and humidity is required. If you''re going to spend the time to install one of these, I wouldn''t settle for a unit that is not automatic. The 24vac transformer that was sent with the unit was pretty cheap; I tried to loosen one of the terminals and it broke the lead. Not worth a phone call so I just picked up one at the hardware store for $13. If you plan on using this for automatic purposes, then the transformer should be powered with constant power. I ran power down from the furnace power switch to the blower compartment where I mounted the transformer. That''s also nice because when you shut down the furnace via the switch it also shuts down the humidifier and adds protection with the onboard furnace fuse. You will want to wire the transformer at the switch and not from any wires or furnace electronics after the switch (excluding a designed HUM accessory power lead). Like many others my furnace''s Honeywell circuit board is equipped with a HUM accessory power lead and on my unit it is 120V so don''t think you can bypass the use of a transformer if that''s the case. But if your board is similar to mine the HUM power lead will only work if you plan on using it in manual mode as it''s only powered when there is a call for heat; it is not powered when there is only a call for the blower or no call at all. Obviously the unit will be more efficient when supplied with heated air; as will be the case most of the time. But there are several studies that show a sufficient amount of humidity will be applied by just the blower moving ambient air through the unit. The manual does state that when set to automatic mode then the unit should be supplied with hot water and in general that is a good practice for the MOST efficient way to evaporate water and help keep the impurities from building up over time. But I couldn''t justify the usage of energy that it takes to make that water hot and watch it go down the drain. Some studies show that the benefit is insignificant in supplying hot water over cold water. It''s going to be up to you but I couldn''t do it and the unit still works very well when supplied with cold water. Hope this helps some of you out in the decision process and I posted a few pictures of the install.

I installed this product myself. I have a background in electrical work as I am a Master Electrician so I did not find it difficult to install. The make humidity it can put out is 45% I do not recall reading this anywhere online before purchasing. Has hoping to get the humidity up to 50-60% but upon further investigation going that high could ruin your house and create mold problems. I think if you do not have any mechanical background it is probably best to have a HVAC contractor install this product.

So like others mentioned... the install guide(s) are a bit crude. Install took me just over 3hrs to do. I piggy backed of the 24v supply already there for the furnace. Used the hot water line for best performance. The tough spots were tin snipping the openings (now i have increadible grip strength) and fitting the 6" flex duct hose (must be a trick to it i don''t know) to the unit and the flange. Make sure your sheet metal screws are long enough as mounting holes on the unit are raised. I used an earlier review which had a check list of supplies needed for this project and for once didn''t have to make two trips to the hardware store (thanks!).

Some tips: To get the unit to work without the temp sensor in place make sure you select manual on the Digital controller (otherwise water won''t flow and error message will show). Make sure you get enough wire (@ $.23 a foot better to have extra then to waste gas and time going back). Finally make sure you are at least 6" upstream from your unit with the Control mounting otherwise you will get higher moisture readings.

I was able to turn down the temp in the house 2 degrees and still felt it was too hot in the house (2,500sqft). I am sure i will be getting returns on this for a long time not to mention how pleasant the house feels.

Last year we had white chalky crap ALL OVER our house. I thought it was the water only, but I guess this should help that also. We just replaced it but also upgraded our water system to a reverse osmosis. Between that and this my white residue problem is solved.

Bought the Vornado Ultrasonic 1 humidifier on a whim when my daughter was having some breathing problems as an infant.

This is the second filter to be used with the unit. I will base this review on the first unit as I have yet to run this one its full life.

The original filter still left a lot of white dust all over her room even though it is supposed to eliminate the powder.

It is also the only one that fits the compartment (that I am aware of)so I cannot choose to try another product. Next time I think I will be more diligent about a humidifier.

I bought this for my Kenmore Progressive air purifier and compared it to the Kenmore replacement pre-filters that I had previously bought from Sears. The filters are an exact match; even the box is the same except for what is printed on it. At the time of this writing Sears charges $10 more for the Kenmore part number than Whirlpool. If you own a Kenmore Progressive air purifier that takes Kenmore pre-filter 32-83378, I highly recommend purchasing this one to save yourself $10 and to discourage Sears from marking up there filters such a ridiculously high amount.

Got these for our Whispure.... the original that came with it removed odors really well, but eventually got too smelly and clogged.

These came in a box,...but not in a plastic bag,....no seal.... just stuffed in a box. Now, the box looks like it might be an original but I have a hard time believing the people at Whirlpool are not smart enough to protect these from humidity/odors/etc during transport and storage! As it turns out, ours smell disgusting, and once put in the Whispure emit a very strong insecticide smell probably from having been stored without protection! The job of active carbon is TO ABSORB ODORS....how can they not come sealed and protected?!?

Again,... horrible smell...can''t use them. Won''t return, as I don''t have the time.... but I wish I had listened to other reviewers about these not being the real thing! (or maybe even Whirlpool isn''t selling the real thing! maybe in this day and age we can''t even hope for the "real thing"!)

I purchased the Whirlpool 8171434K Large Air Purifier Carbon Pre-Filters to replace those in two Whispure AP51030K units that I am running. I only purchase items directly from Amazon, so I can''t speak to the other reviews complaining about 3rd party replacement filters being shipped instead of the OEM filters--the filters Amazon shipped to me are genuine Whirlpool filters.

The pre-filters have small slits pre-cut towards the top of the filter, which makes it very easy to position the new filter exactly where it needs to be on the grill. Once placed onto the front grill''s guide tabs, all that''s required is gently pushing the filter material into place and reattaching the grill to the air purifier.

I have been very impressed by the amount of dust and pet hair that these pre-filters are able to capture within their 3 month lifespan. The primary purpose of these filters is to capture the larger dust particles, thereby extending the life of the more expensive HEPA filter (which gets changed once per year). Despite the relatively small amount of activated carbon in these pre-filters, I have been impressed by their ability to quickly neutralize light cooking and catbox odors.

In my opinion, these filters are a great value and perform as expected.

ROTHO Twin TT Water-Filtration HEPA Canister Vacuum Cleaner

I just love this vacuum. My cleaning woman loves it, too. At the beginning I thought I made a mistake because it takes some reading to understand how it works. However, if one takes the time, this machine it''s incredible. the first thing I noticed was the clean odor when vacuuming. I don''t have to put any kind of deodorant or pellets in the bag. Secondly, as you vacuum longer with it, the amount of soil in the container dimishes and now it takes about an hour of vacuuming before we have to change the water. We have tested it on rugs, upholstery and windows, and once you get to know how it works, it''s really good. I am very happy with my ROTHO Twin TT and as much as I love my Miele, this one has become the queen, in my house.

I''ll start with the cons. It IS heavy and a bit awkward to use. It doesn''t "follow" well and the hose kinks easily. The cord could be longer too. It''s pricey and I''m not sure I can buy any parts or filters locally so most likely I''ll have to shop online for that. Now for the pros. It really does clean extremely well. I''ve purchased a Kirby and a Dyson in the past and this little machine has them both beat by a mile. It''s amazing how well this picks up the dirt and pet hair. Yes, its gross when you clean it and see what was in your carpet but I don''t find dealing with it that bad. I dump the contents outside and the ''solid'' gunk I wipe out with a paper towel and rinse the rest of the parts under the faucet. It started to get a bit of a smell so I washed the hepa filter just with water and a brush. It''s not like new but its a big improvement and should extend the life of it until I need to buy a replacement filter. Switching to the ''wet'' method of cleaning is also a bit cumbersome but I''ve used it on carpet and on hard floors and it works pretty well. I probably would be happy with a Rainbow machine also but I chose this one and I''m happy with it.

I have owned the Rotho Twin tt with all the accessory''s for about five years and paid $1200. I should have returned it immediately.

If your house is starting out nearly spotless and without pets than this vacuum would be ok for you. However if there is dirt and pet fur on your floor this thing clogs up after vacuuming one small room. So to keep it operating properly you have to keep emptying, rising, and refilling the tank (which is a bucket with odd angles that requires a toothbrush to clean out the corners) maybe 3 or 4 times just to vacuum through the house once. I dump the tank in the yard and use the hose on it, later I pick up the dried fur ball laying on the grass . If this bucket was to break I don''t even know if replacements are available.

Then there are filters that are a pain to rinse and clean. The site I purchased this vacuum from left the impression there were no filters that needed to be replaced and they didn''t offer them. Well there are. Five years ago a set cost about $35, so I purchased five of them from another site. I am down to one set left, so I go online to purchase more and they are $50 each. I notice they aren''t even available through Amazon.

Also where the hose connects to the vacuum must be pulled apart and cleaned once in awhile.

I have used the upholstery and carpet shampooer attachments a few times, these are ok.

My mother has had a Rainbow vacuum for 26 years, with no complaints. I wish I had put out the extra money and purchased one.

Despite all these complaints the Rotho vacuum has amazing suction and will get carpets really clean. And if you keep the tank and filters cleaned the exhaust air is very fresh.

I have avoided using anything acidic and have always had a hard time getting the tile and the fixtures clean. This product works far better than any I have tried. I like these filters better than the 400 series filters. The 200/300 series are pretty small, easy to dispose of, only go into the machine one way and they capture a ton of particulate matter.

The product came as advertised.

It is wonderful! I am SO happy to finally be able to stop buying-toting-storing gallons upon gallons of drinking water!

Installation took about an hour and a half, drilling, plumbing hookups, tightening screws, and what not. (I watched in anticipation lol)

After installation I let it run through for a couple of minutes, tried a sip, and then immediately used the chlorine testing strips provided which proved perfect chlorine filtration!

The water taste is awesome. No funny smells or tastes, just pure water. You would think you had dipped a cup into a pure mountain spring.

I have a 2.5 gallon BPA-free dispenser jug in the fridge (which I also bought from Amazon over a year ago) because I like cold/cool water. So, I filled it right up and I''m all set.

Hamilton Beach 47665 BrewStation Plus 12-Cup Automatic Drip Coffeemaker Save 28% Off

My bride and I have owned probably a half-dozen or so coffeemakers during out 15-year marriage. We both love coffee in the morning, and we like to have it piping hot and ready when we rise. We''ve had some very good coffeemakers and owned a variety of brands and models. But all but two had one major Achilles'' heel a glass carafe. However hard we might try, those glass carafes always got broken. And when they got broken, the unanimous refrain from stores and manufacturers was: "Sorry, we don''t offer that version anymore." So, it was a new coffeemaker or nothing.

We also owned one of those fancy units with an insulated carafe. Well, at least for the unit we bought, that cuts two ways. Yes, the coffee inside is insulated from the frigid winds of our kitchen. It is also effectively insulated from a warmer (which the unit did not have or, obviously, need). Now I can tell you that, with the possible exception of the most secret research bowels of NASA, there is no insulated carafe in the universe that is as effective as a warmer unless one consumes one''s coffee very quickly.

Not only does this unit make great coffee, there is no carafe to break!! Or wash!! Thank you, thank you, thank you Hamilton Beach. We love it.

One caveat: when the user''s manual tells you to regularly descale the unit, do so. Else the machine will get sulky and simply refuse to brew your coffee. It''s probably unionized, who knows, but it does effectively sit down on the job. Now the manual has been fine tuned by an attorney and recommends descaling monthly. Given the levels of dissolved mineral in our water, we descale once every six months and all is fine.

After reading all of the bad news about the rampant tank leakage problems of the Hamilton Beach Brewstation the next grade down (models 47224, 47114, 47214, 47221, 47111, & the like) I looked at one locally, & I agreed the housing & overall feel felt & looked on the junky side. So I went with this one, the Hamilton Beach Brewstation Plus, which seems a much more solidly built, sturdier model.

But there are some things I really needed to know about it first, & you may too.

When the Brewstation Plus arrived from Amazon, I tested the water tank. And yes, it steadily leaked water all over the counter top in great quantities. What a mess...right off the bat. So I studied the way it was made, & decided the water may be coming out around the metal heating plate screwed to the bottom of the tank vs. the dispenser seal. And so I got out my Phillips head screwdriver, & I tightened down all of the screws in the bottom of the tank. Being careful not to strip out the holes. And this has taken care of this problem tonight. No more leaks so far. There wasn''t just one or two loose, none of the screws were put in very tight in my unit. This definitely could cause it to leak everywhere in all directions. If mine arrived this way, I wonder how many more were shipped out the same way. If yours leaks, you may want to try tightening down all the screws first in the bottom of the tank first, test it, & try again before undergoing the hassle of shipping it back & waiting again for something else. At the same time, if you''re thinking you shouldn''t have to do this...you''re right.

The next thing you need to know is what you see in this ad is NOT the coffee machine you will get. This is major. I cannot stress this enough. One picture in this ad shows a 6 button coffee machine & one picture shows a 4 button coffee machine. I bought this model based on the 6 button image, started drooling over all the features, didn''t catch the discrepancy between it & the 4 button image & I ended up with a 4 button coffee machine in the mail. :|

The model I received has a green (not blue) clock with a programmable timer but it DOES NOT have the "1-4 Cup" & "Flavor+" features you see in the 2nd mouse-over image in this ad. And after all of the trouble I went through to mail order the model I saw featured that just sux. The model number 47665 on the box matches the ad so I can only blame myself for not noticing that Amazon is showing you TWO DIFFERENT MODELS in the SAME AD & for not researching & verifying it elsewhere. Though I shouldn''t have to do this either... Instead, I trusted what I saw, & got so excited over "Flavor+" (I like to brew up a serious pot of ''mud''), & a scalable brew size, that I ordered away. Also, the LCD clock display will NOT be blue as seen above it will be green.

In retrospect, I''d rather have paid $11 less & just got a Brewstation Plus locally featuring nothing but the On/Off button sight seen & enjoyed coffee all last week, vs. waiting on a mail order, & then being disappointed with the model I was actually sent. I bought this model because I really wanted the 1-4 Cup & Flavor+ features in picture #2, & don''t care much about programming my coffee. I''ll be calling Amazon to report this error.

Thirdly, to avoid the pervasive "plastic coffee" taste problem so many customers report make sure you run a LOT of water through the machine first. The manual suggests running through at least 2 cycles but you will need to run it through a LOT more water cycles than that, even if you wash the tank out well first, to get the oily film off the surface of the water that comes out. If you still see factory oil in your water, you''ll probably still taste plastic.

Lastly, the well-maligned Hamilton Beach reusable metal mesh coffee filter actually MAY work with the Brewstation Plus. People are saying that it fits too loose & will not work with the regular Brewstation (see models listed in first paragraph), but it may fit more snug in the Brewstation Plus models, due to differences in filter basket design. I bought a reusable mesh filter locally, & it measured way too high to use in this machine, so that I couldn''t close the lid down all the way. So I may try the Hamilton Beach filter instead...unless this machine completely malfunctions & goes off the deep end...we''ll see.

I hope this helps to keep someone from making the same mistake I did & ordering this item based on the 6 button picture. Or from shipping their Brewstation back too soon in place of a possible quick fix.

UPDATE:

I called Amazon to let them know about the picture error in the ad mentioned above & instead of fixing the error Amazon has now added TWO wrong pictures... Buyers need to know the Hamilton Beach BrewStation Model 47665 has ONLY 4 BUTTONS NOT 6 BUTTONS, as pictured above now in not 1 but TWO incorrect images for this model. If you order Model 47665, expecting a machine to arrive with the 6 buttons features you see pictured above you may be as disappointed as I was by only receiving a 4 BUTTON machine, with no "1-4 Cup" or "Flavor+" settings, because that''s what model 47665 really is. (Hello! Amazon...??)

Neither I, nor Amazon CS over the phone, could locate a 6 BUTTON model Hamilton Beach Brewstation for purchase anywhere in Amazon''s website. If they had one for sale, I would have bought one & Amazon told me they don''t have any 6 button models for sale. So, buyer beware.

In the first Brewsation received, I discovered a 2" long crack in the main housing of the coffee machine iself in a critical place where water could leak down into the machinery, & I had to send it back & wait on a replacement.

The coffee tank in the replacement I received leaked as well, but not as much as the first one I was sent. Again, gently tightening the screws to the hot plate in the bottom of the coffee tank permanently resolved this issue. After tightening, the second one no longer leaks now either.

The method I find that works best to flush the "plastic coffee" taste & oily factory smell out of the machine is flushing with several tanks of water, & then brewing several 4 cup cycles white vinegar, & then brewing several tanks of water again to flush the vinegar out. The vinegar seems to get the smell out of the machine faster than just water, & it''s a cheap, organic fix compared to flushing with descaling chemicals.

I have a Hamilton Beach Model 80675 Permanent Gold Tone Filter on order, & will post again to let people know whether it actually fits THIS model, Brewstation 47665. It''s been pointed out in several reviews that the Hamilton Beach Permanent Filter does not fit other Brewstations the next grade down (those models listed in the first paragraph). And, I found that the permanent filter made by Mr. Coffee stands too high to use in this model to close the lid down for brewing, & had to return it. It will not work with this machine. So, we shall see.

Some people with various Hamilton Beach Brewstation models have complained that the coffee is weak when made as per the manual''s instruction. I AGREE. And here is how I resolved this issue...

The instruction manual says not to put more than 1 scoop of coffee into the filter per cup brewed. BUT if the Brewstation is made to brew 12 cups of coffee, with 12 scoops in the filter it will also brew 8 cups of coffee, with 12 scoops in the filter. No matter how much or how little water you put in up to 12 cups, so long as you don''t go over 12 scoops of coffee, the machine won''t overflow. So I brew 8 cups of water with 12 scoops of coffee in the filter & I get nice, strong, tasty coffee. And since you WILL NOT get the "Flavor+" feature you see pictured above if you like strong coffee too you might want to give this method a try.

Misleading & incorrect advertisements, & do-it-yourself coffee tank leak fixes aside I think model 47665 does brew nice coffee. And it brews it the way I like to prepare my coffee, which is the primary reason I went with this design. I like being able to pour in a large amount of water, mix together all of my special sugared up cappuchino vanilla latte fixings in my 52oz. thermal Bubba Mug while it brews (why just have a cup of coffee, when you can have an entire JUG?? : D ) & then gradually stir the coffee into the mug straight from the Brewsation. After that, I turn the machine off, because my coffee stays hot enough for me in the jumbo thermal mug. And with 12 scoops of Foglifter making 8 cups of coffee I am "Starbucks Rogers" whizzing past Mars & sailing for Jupiter.......!! : D

I have been using the Hamilton Beach 47665 BrewStation Plus 12-Cup Automatic Drip Coffeemaker for about six months. I purchased it because a colleague was raving about how much she loved hers and my current coffee maker was on its last legs. I have to say that, in the beginning, it was a match made in heaven. I loved everything about it: there was no coffee pot, the coffee was piping hot, and it was just fun to use. Now I hate that water drips on my counter whenever I open the top, the first cup of coffee is tepid, and it takes forever to get the coffee because the flow is now reduced to a dribble (no matter how many times I clean it the recommended way). This morning, when I got no coffee at all, was the final straw --it was full and ready to go and just didn''t brew. I cleaned out the tank really well and was amazed and sickened by the amount of black "gunk" that came pouring out (remember that I have religiously cleaned it the recommended way). I did an internet search and realized, yet again, that it certainly pays to do homework before buying an appliance. This coffee maker has many, many, many enthusiastic reviews by new owners but just as many, if not more, reviews by long term owners that are quite negative. My advice: pass on this coffee maker and keep looking. And if anyone stumbles across a reasonably priced, good, dependable (over the long haul) coffee maker that makes hot coffee...I would love to hear about it.

The model I have (47665) so far is performing well.

No leaks. The clock/timer works.

The water gets lip-burning hot.

I ran water through it twice before making our first brew and it tasted plasticky. We''ll have to run it a few more times until it''s "seasoned".

***( I ran water through it twice. The third time I added a Tbsp. of vinegar. Ran water through it again. The last time I brewed 3 bags of tea. That took care of the plasticky flavor. We had one of the best cups of coffee after that.)

Almost bought the $99.00 Zojirushi and $100 Cuisinart at the mall. Got a great deal on the Hamilton Beach locally. Just a few dollars less than Amazon. Though Amazon still has one of the best deals with free shipping and all. I think that this model is the best deal for a brewstation.

Dispensing our coffee is the best part. We hope it lasts.

This is review of "Non-Watts Premier Brand RO Membranes" like this one. While it should work as described, DO NOT USE on Watts Premier WP systems (i.e. WP-4V, WP-4, WP-5). The WP systems are the one-piece manifold systems from Watts Premier.

This does not have the built-in Check Valve or Brine Seal inside the white plastic tube of the RO Membrane. Without this Check Valve or Brine Seal, water from the reservoir tank (when full) will back flow to the RO membrane and damage it, and waste water.

This back flow or reverse flow will happen when your reservoir tank gets full. So basically, you will be wasting water as the water trickle will not stop. When I tested it, water continued to trickle out of the reject water outlet tube even when my reservoir tank is full already (it should stop when reserve tank is full). The water coming out is at a much slower rate though, but still plenty enough to raise your water bill since the water trickle will continue 24 hours a day.
