Krups 472-00 Duofilter

Krups 472-00 Duofilter, 1 Year Supply, 6 filtersWhen I ordered this, I was under the impression I was getting "one click no shipping" That was not the case, and I am very upset by the deception. I would urge you not to use this company, they were unwilling to cancel the order. It was a Sunday, they were closed for all intents and purposes, but still sent the package (with shipping fee) on Monday. I can afford to drive a long way for the filters next time with the shipping I will save. I won''t feel screwed either.

Coffee tastes pure and clean when using this filter.I can tell the difference when the filter needs changing. Great idea to put a filter in the Krups coffee pot!

Bissell Steam Mop Hard-Floor Cleaner, Green Tea Save 39% Off

Bissell Steam Mop Hard-Floor Cleaner, Green Tea, 1867-7I live in a neighborhood where EVERY home is "green built certified" this means that, to have that certification, the builder built no homes with carpet. All the main floors are polished concrete and the upper floors wood. The bathrooms all have tile and/or slate in every home.

Because of this, as you could imagine, steam mops are quite the neccessity...not only because they get the hard surfaces better than anything else, but because they are also "green" and clean chemical free. I''ll be honest, for us...that''s a bonus but we weren''t cleaning chemical free before. We like chemical free for our pet''s paws but I''ll confess I was mopping with chemicals before I got my steamer and just kept the pets out of the room while doing it because, up until then, I couldn''t get it clean any other way.

Okay, so that said...we decided to have a steamer show down to compare 5 different steamers because my friends and I knew as long as we are in these homes we are gonna have to have a steamer to get all these hard floors clean...we may as well figure out which one to buy next go round. Because my own home is graced with 2 cats, 3 dogs, and two gregarious cooks, my kitchen floor (which had not ever been cleaned by a steamer since my steamer had just arrived) was the testing spot.

Mind you, I vaccuum twice per week and do a mega mop twice a week. I THOUGHT I had pretty clean floors in spite of my pet capacity.

I thought wrong. These picked up dirt so well it''s scary

So here''s the results:

1. steam mops are the mac daddys of clean floors. What these things picked up was tremendous and no comparison to my vigorous prior constant major mopping.

2. So now I''ll break down the elements of each mop we used and then go into more detail about each at the end.

We tried out:

"S": The shark by Europro

"E" The Envirosteamer by Eureka

"H" the haan steamer

"M" the Monster

"B" The Bissell Green Tea

CORD LENGTH: so you don''t have to stop and unplug and replug in somewhere else:

Shark ( will be referred to as S):20 feet

Envirosteamer (will be referred to as E): 25 feet

Haan: (will be referred to as H)19''8"

Monster (will be referred to as M): 25 feet

Bissell (will be referred to as B) 17 feet

STEAM TEMPERATURE: this is a primary element. The hotter the steam, the more dirt picked up and hot steam will also kill parasites, mold and mildew and loosen more dirt:

S 110 degrees. lame

E 220 degrees. very hot

H 212 degrees. very hot

M 266 degrees. hottest...although the envirosteamer and haan seemed plenty hot enough. The shark didn''t clean nearly as well and this was one reason. 110 degrees just isn''t going to melt off stuck on grime.

B 125 degrees. Note that, because of this low steam temperature the manual said that if I wanted to sanitize the floor or pick up caked on spills, I had to "hold the steamer on the spot for 15 seconds but no more than 20 because that could damage some floors". Now I don''t know about you, but if I can sanitize with one swipe of the other steamers because of their sanitizing temps my floor will be done WAY faster...and I also don''t have to carry a timer to worry about the extra 5 seconds where my wood floors could get damaged when I have to hold the Bissell for 15 seconds on my wood but no more than 20! My sink water is hotter than the Bissell so it would take less time to use a regular mop if I have to hold the steamer on every spot of my floor for 15 seconds to sanitize. Just sayin

BUILD:

We found how it was made corresponded with issues with the steamer. The Shark, for example, was quite flimsy and they actually sell replacement handle kits because so many people have issues with the handle breaking! We know this because my neighbor''s shark broke and the store had a replacement handle kit on the shelf because he said "it happens often". That''s an extra cost.

Envirosteamer: Was 5.4 lbs which made it lightweight but strong enough that you didn''t have to press down to clean. Very well made and strong parts

Haan: not made as well as the envirosteamer but it''s more expensive so this was a surprise. A bit flimsy and you need to press down on it more to clean at 3.15 lbs.

Monster: hefty and well made at 9 lbs but a bit too heavy unless you want a good workout. (Note: They have changed the Monster handles on the mops now and they are all plastic and people are having breakage issues)

Bissell: It''s 8.4 pounds but that includes a water filter that you have to get for this one (see notes below)

WATER CAPACITY: Very important because having to stop and add more water just adds on to the time you have to spend cleaning, especially if you are cleaning a hallway or livingroom or some other area that has no sink:

S: only holds 10 oz of water. Lasted for 10 miinutes of cleaning

E: holds 20 oz. of water. Lasted for over 20 minutes of cleaning (we stopped at 20 and it was still going)

H: holds 11.83 oz of water. Lasted for 13 minutes of cleaning

M: holds 17 oz. of water. Lasted for 15 minutes of cleaning

B: holds 13 oz of water, lasted for 12.5 minutes of cleaning AND you have to undo and remove the tank from the machine every time you fill it up then hook it back on and the steam tank is on the handle rather than the base so the steam doesn''t flow directly out after heating up which may explain why it''s not as hot once it leaves the machine. The way this mop is made the water flows past heating elements which can, according to Bissell, develop calcium deposits on it so this is the only mop where, because of this, you also have to use a water filter with it and replace the water filter when there is build up which means an extra 12 bucks every few months. The better mops are made to heat the water in a metal tank so this is not an issue and you pour the water directly into the tank.

STEAM HOLES: We found a difference although you''d think they''d all be the same. The shark and Bissell only had one hole that the steam came out of so it wasn''t cleaning things on the edges, just in one spot. All the others had steam coming from bottom and sides.

SIZE: The taller it is the less stooping, the wider the mop head, the more it covers

S: 40"Hx12"Wx7"D. Apparently built only for the height of a small child to push unless you want to bend over and push.

E: 50"Hx13.25"Wx6.75"D (the fact that this depth was smaller made it reach under applicances better...it fit better under things)

H: 50.5x11.5x7.5

M: 48x12.7.5

B: 45.25H (this was uncomfortably short as well) x11 x8.4 (even though this didn''t fit under cabinets because of the depth it did swivel the best)

Conclusion of comparison: First it must be pointed out that, in order to use the shark and the Bissell, you had to keep pumping the water. This was the most annoying feature of anything...the others just steamed on their own and didn''t wear out your fingers. Hated this feature of the shark and Bissell. We liked that the Monster and the Shark and Envirosteamer and the Bissell came with 2 cleaning pads rather than one. The Haan only came with one at the time of the review (I double checked since when she bought hers it was also only one and as of today, that hasn''t changed) so that ups the price even more because I can''t imagine only wanting one to clean. All worked well on sanitizing mattresses and showers. too.

But the winner picked by all of us unanimously as the mop we want to have for our next steam mop order?

The Eureka Envirosteamer. It picked up the most dirt, was made as well as the Monster but was less expensive, held the most water, emitted the most very hot steam so it sanitized as well and quickly wiped up caked on spills, lasted 3 times as long with one water resevoir fill-up as the others, and had a cord as long as the monster. BUT if you have carpets than I might recommend the Monster because it has a carpet attachment that allows you to steam clean your carpets and it picked up pretty close to the same amount of dirt as the Eureka Envirosteamer, and had close to the same features...a bit heavier though but that may make it last even longer. It is costlier, but to clean 2 surfaces I would think that might make it worth it.

UPDATE: The Haan just started including 2 pads with the mop according to the product description page. Not that this changes our opinion since it didn''t work as well and the parts were flimsier, but it should be noted that this issue of not having enough cleaning pads has now been resolved and is equal to the other mops.

ANOTHER UPDATE: 1. The Shark came out with a new machine that holds more water and has a longer cord BUT it still only heats the water to 110 degrees so it won''t sanitize or get rid of trapped grime at this "bathwater" temperature.

Another update: I haven''t tried it yet but was told about an even better mop than the Eureka Envirosteamer but I can''t personally afford it...still, it''s worth mentioning in case you can. It''s called the Ladybug XL2300 and is a canister steam mop. It heats the water to 298 degrees (woah!) so it''s a super sanitizer but it''s over a thousand bucks. It also comes with 6 towels. I didn''t include it in my review because I haven''t ever tried it and I wanted to only include mops I personally tried but it''s got great enough stats that, even though it''s out of my price range, I thought I''d pass it on as a super sanitizer when I read about it.

Also: Don''t spend money buying extra pads for the Eureka. I was in a pinch and used a kitchen dish towel...the rectangular kind...just clip on both ends. It worked just as good or better...because they are thinner so the steam penetrates faster and therefore reaches the floor hotter. However, I would recommend still only using the thick pads that come with it for your wood floors just to be safe. But the super hot steam penetrating the dish towel worked excellent on tile and hard floors. Also, you can flip both the towel and the pads that come with it on the Eureka to double the usage...when it gets dirty, just flip it over and use the other side. I use several old dish towels with this but I like best the kind that just have a bit of texture but no squares sewn on them...but they all work great. So do the pads.

I''ve owned the older white model for over a year now the old terry pads didn''t bother me as far as shrinking went, but I sure wore holes in them. The new microfiber pads are a nice improvement, easier to get on and off, and appear to be more durable.

I''m a big fan of this product and was very disappointed when Bissell appeared to discontinue it I''ve wanted to purchase one for my mother and mother in law.

So, for the review:

Nothing cleans your floor better than good old fashioned Cinderella-style scrubbing. But given that I have around 1800 square feet of hard flooring, three kids, and four dogs my knees just can''t take that kind of torture cleaning something that is just going to be spilled on, puked on, or smeared with banana in a matter of minutes.

I have tried all the other leading brands of hard floor cleaners, and this one is by far the simplest to use and does a decent enough job that it''s a regular in my household cleaning routine.

Pros:

Uses nothing but water. No chemicals, no expensive solutions. I do purchase distilled since we have hard well water and the filter on my old model hasn''t needed replacing.

Cleans my ceramic tile and bamboo floor quickly and effectively. The water dries very quickly. My tile never looks streaky, but the bamboo flooring does a bit.

Piece of cake clean up. Toss the mop head pad into the laundry, wrap the cord up and you''re done. Small and compact, easy to store.

It''s very quiet. I can clean after my kids are in bed and the soft steaming noise wouldn''t bother even the lightest sleeper.

Cons:

The cord really is too darn short, but I''ve remedied that with an extension cord.

It''s a little short for me. This gripe isn''t very fair because EVERY mop, broom, and vacuum are too short for me (except for the Dyson) I''m tall. But I will mention here that short women aren''t the only people who clean! My 5''10" self and my 6''4" husband both have to hunch over to mop the floor with this. It''d be lovely if the handle could extend.

Doesn''t do a great job on grout but nothing does. I''ve decided I just hate tile and grout period.

It does take some effort to push, but cleans overall more quickly than the Powered Floormate.

Like any machine it can''t get right up close to the walls and though its mophead fits under the cabinets, it simply cannot clean right in the crack where the floor meets. So every so often I have to get down and hand scrub those areas.

----

Highly, highly recommend for regular use. Does a great job at steaming the dried on grime and gunk my kids regularly paste the house with.

----

Update 10/11/2010 the microfiber pads have worn out, but they lasted much longer than the old terry pads, have had to order replacement pads, but no biggie. If you sew, they''d be easy to patch with some microfiber towels.

Still love this thing, it gets used a couple times a week on our very messy floors! We now have hard flooring in the basement too (more bamboo) so it gets used more than ever.

This product is just OK. For some with lots of tile that not too dirty, it may be fine. It is a light cleaning tool. If I had lots of heavy regular filth due to heavy animal and kid traffic, I wouldn''t buy either steam cleaner. I am returning the Bissell because I have a lot of wood laminate and it leaves the floors WAY too wet and streaked. But you ought to be aware of the pros and cons since some things may not matter to you. I also borrowed my sister''s Shark Steam Mop so I will compare the two for you as the cost is identical.

*The Bissell has a swivel head which is great around the toilet and the Shark does not swivel at all.

*The Bissell is well made for a such a low profile appliance and feels sturdy with a nice thick cord. The Shark feels cheaply made with a flimsy cord. The lengths of the cord are similar. You''ll need to use an extension cord with both.

*The Bissell has a removeable water bottle (convenient!) and the shark does not.

*The Bissell weighs more than the Shark (about 8 pounds), but is very easy to push. The Shark is harder to push, but weighs only 3 pounds. You''d get an aerobic workout if you cleaned a whole house of flooring with the Shark and was a lightweight like me!

*The Bissell leaves you with a VERY wet floor even if you go easy on the steam trigger. I also had lots of streaks on my laminate wood flooring. I would not use it on laminate or wood w/o drying them off ASAP. The Shark does not leave streaks and did not leave a sopping trail behind. The floors dried on their own in under a minute. This is a HUGE plus!

*The Bissell pads have a drawstring and are pretty thin and not absorbant which is a contributing factor to the soppiness the mop leaves behind. The Shark pads are velcro attached (easier!)and are thicker and more absorbant. They are also much more expensive to replace, however.

So, my conclusion is that if I had tile floors, I might consider keeping it as the excess wetness wasn''t as huge streaky issue (I went and cleaned my in-laws white tile with it) and it''s a sturdier product that seems like it will last for years. I would just find some elastic pads that were ALOT better (I was considering the Tersano pads sold here Tersano lotus Wet Mop Cloths, 2-Pack #LMC28 as a possibliity since they will fit). But since the drier steam and the better pads are VERY important to me, I may actaully go with the Shark even though the machine is rather flimsy feeling and appears more cheaply made. I''d just use distilled water in it and hope it goes few years before falling apart. You''d think that by now some manufacturer would be able to provide the best of both products. What happened Bissell? You could have had a GREAT product if the pads were thick and absorbant and you provided us with the dry steam that the infomercials imply!

Well, it''s a newbie review since the product was just released. Time will tell if I actually use this long term or not...

But so far....

I actually do like it! There are only 8 gazillion options on how to best clean your floor, none which truly compare with getting down on your hands and knees. But, for the TYPICAL user who needs an easier solution to a pretty clean floor a couple times a week and particularly prefers not to use chemicals this actually works quite well. I am not disappointed.

I will make a couple notes though:

I guess I wrongly assumed that since it''s using "steam" water it is going to be sanitizing as it goes along. After reading the manual though it states to actually disinfect an area you have to let it steam in that spot for 15 seconds. Obviously to do a whole floor would take the afternoon. But, okay, if you drop a piece of chicken it''s a nice option I suppose.

Also, I was really hoping it would leave a streak free clean but the floor does end up with a bit of standing water and does leave some streaks. Maybe if you don''t hold down the lever quite so much it would just release less water. Of course, though, then it''s not steaming as much either.

Additionally, the lever is a bit tough to hold down for extended periods of time so not for those users with weak pointer fingers. No biggie though.

The cord is pretty short, so I could see that bothering some people. Although I like short cords. Less opportunities to fall and break my neck.

So, in the product''s favor, it does a decent job which is what I was most concerned about. If I let it steam for 3 seconds or so right over something stuck on the kitchen floor it takes it right off. Also goes under the ledges and stuff nicely. The pads are easy to take on and off and it''s quiet.. Also heats up very quickly (a few seconds) and the water lasts long enough for me to do the whole kitchen and dining room. And it''s heavy enough you don''t feel like you have to bear down on it like you do the Swiffer.

One last thing though. It isn''t a super quick clean, in my opinion. I almost think a mop is a little faster because with this thing you kind of want it to go slower so that it can really steam. So, it isn''t necessarily saving me much time. But it is saving hassle, chemicals, and my back!

For someone who understands that that there are no quick fixes in life and they will never find anything that can replace true blood, sweat and tears of doing the job by hand it would be a good find. It is a nice thing to have and a decent close 2nd.

I bought this after much online research and figured it had to be too good to be true. A product that would clean without chemicals, not be hard to use, and not need a million pieces! This mop is very light to move, the pad is easy to clean via wash or sink. I most like how it doesn''t leave streaks. Everything else I''ve used on my sealed hardwood floors leaves streaks. No more on my hands and knees! The only things that are a little pain are that you have to take the pad off the bottom after use so that you don''t leave a wet spot (no different than any other mop), the cord tends to be on the short side, there is no way to turn it off except by unplugging it, and that if you aren''t careful with the amount of steam you will have to go over the flooring with a towel. This is only a problem on the wood, on ceramic it dries without problem. I''ve been on the lookout for a product that is easy and efficient. After having mine for a month I am still happy and would recommend it to anyone. Oh, this is Randall''s wife writing the review.

Deionization Resin Mixed Bed Color Changing 5 Lb Bag Save 44% Off

Deionization Resin Mixed Bed Color Changing 5 Lb BagI am very pleased to have used this as part of overhauling my point-of-use RO DI drinking water.

About a month ago, as I took a sip of water I told my wife how awful it tasted. I have been regularly changing my pre-filters on my RO DI unit. I had never recharged the resin or even the RO membrane IN 5 YEARS!!!!! Oooops. My TDS was 336 ppm. Compared to my tap water it was identical. I am ashamed of myself. I vowed to never go longer than a year between resin changes. We only use about two gallons a day on this unit.

So, new bank of pre-filters, new RO membrane, and new DI resin. My TDS is back down into the single digits. Oh, and the water tastes like nothing. It is just pure, clean, refreshing water. With 5 lbs, I should be able to fill my (very large) resin container at least three times.

I would suggest to my seller (CFS): I understand you are buying this in bulk from ResinTech and repackaging it in smaller quantity for people like me who only need a nominal amount. But I would suggest a bag a little more substantial than a standard zip lock bag. Even if you used a freezer grade Ziploc, that would be better. I had to store the surplus resin in a beefier bag. The Ziploc it was sent in was almost to the point of giving out. Wow, that would be a HUGE mess!

Didnt realize there was so much included. I may get refills for the rest of the year. Great product so far, thanks

Works good. Lowered TDS to 0, Cl/Br to 0, hardness and alkalinity to 0. Leaves a bit of a funny taste. Switch the fittings on your RO unit so this comes before the taste filter then add an alkalizer filter at the very end for some great tasting water. Fixed my nasty tasting water that an RO alone would not.

Walgreens Clearly Better Pitcher Filter Replacement Cartridge

Walgreens Clearly Better Pitcher Filter Replacement CartridgeThe listed price for this item seems wrong. I just got a three-pack of these filters at a Walgreens store for about $15. Clearly someone has made a mistake because it seems the picture is for a one-filter pack but the price is quite high. What gives?

As for the quality, the jury is out. I replaced my Brita filter for a Brita pitcher with the Walgreens/Culligan less-costly replacement. And the water has a strange taste, almost like citrus. I can''t understand that. It tastes flavored, and not a very good flavor. The water is the same as before. With the Brita filter it just tasted like clean, neutral water.

We have always had very good water but the last few years I have noticed more chlorine being added with the resulting smell and taste. This takes that out and I use it everyday for making coffee and tea and you can taste the difference. Since it uses activated charcoal and ion exchange it also removes mercury, copper, zinc and others but I use this for the improvement in water taste.

I''m disabled and home bound, so I do all my shopping online. I previously had gotten a box of three from Walgreen''s but was not able to this time. This was the only on that clearly stated it would fit my Walgreen''s pitcher. I think it''s a little pricey for just one, but I have to go for the convenience and sometimes I have to pay a little more for that.

  • GE SmartWater GXULQR Water Filter is a replacement cartridge for use with: GE GXULQ Full Flow Water Filtration System
  • You should replace the GE GXULQR Filter every 2000 gallons or six months, whichever comes first. You may need to replace your GE water filter earlier if your water has a bad taste or odor

Assuming you already have decent tap water, all this does is remove the chlorine odor. It''s a pretty mild effect, so unless you are already aware of a chlorine odor or have had your water tested to be high in chlorine with a pool tester, I''d skip it. Having said that I can tell a difference (did a blind test) and it''s dead simple to use after you install it.

Our local water utility changed to a cheaper treatment method that left our water tasting & smelling like a swimming pool.

This is a refill cartridge for the GXULQ unit and is effective at removing chlorine taste & smell for a reasonable cost and does not require a separate faucet. Our water is once again drinkable right from the kitchen tap. Water flow is slightly diminished but acceptable.

Installation is very simple. Check out the FilterDoctor video for a demonstration @

Overall very satisfied in the short time we''ve been using it ... jury is still out on longer term performance.

This is supposed to be an easy install to replace the filters. After three VERY DIFFICULT installs (very hard to twist and push in -got a shoulder strain two times), I have given up! Customer service is not well-informed and could not help me out.

We are moving to a highly-rated Aquasana filtration system (keeping my fingers crossed that this will have a happy ending).

Brita Base Faucet Filtration System-1ct

Brita Base Faucet Filtration System-1ctI found this very easy to attach and remove, which I do a lot due to using a portable washer that shares the sink connection.

I''ve read of people having issues with the plastic threaded connection but no problems here. Maybe it''s been resolved by Brita in newer shipments.

Very easy to use, and does a really good job taking that chlorine and impure taste out of the tap water. I can''t tell the difference between the filtered water and bottled. The color indicator telling you when the filter''s nearing replacement time is appreciated as well.

MAF-1 Emerson MoistAIR Humidifier Wick Filter

MAF-1 Emerson MoistAIR Humidifier Wick FilterI also received a BestAir brand, not the MoistAIR brand as advertised....

It''s shorter than the Kenmore Brand I should be using, but it works well in our humidifyer. It has a wire-type exterior ''frame'' for better reinforcement, and it costs much less than the Kenmore Brand. This, combined with the humidifyer treatment I found for $2 a bottle at Walmart makes a much less expensive way to keep our home humidity up. Keep in mind that you must use humidifyer treatment if your filter gums up or becomes yellow and hardens...that means you have hard water and the water cannot wick up the filster. The life of your filter will be dramatically less if you don''t use a treatment.

I ordered a MAF-1 Emerson MoistAir humidifier filter and received a sub called BestAir Humidwick. When I said would return them , they said these should be as good as the originals. I have no way of knowing until I use them! THAT MEANS i WON''T know until about two months down the road.

Although the item description plainly states "Emerson MoistAIR Humidifier Replacement filter", what I actually received was an "RPS Products BestAir Humidi-Wick" aftermarket replacement. I feel this is misleading and fraudulent the description should include wording that "this is not a genuine Emerson product" or something to that effect.

Since it looks to be equal in quality to the orignal, I wouldn''t have minded too much if it actually fit correctly! Unfortunately, it''s nearly two inches too short in length, so the ends won''t butt up against one another as delivered. In order for it to work properly, I had to grab both ends and stretch it out to the correct length before installation. That should not be necessary and isn''t with genuine Emerson filters. I definitely will not be buying these on Amazon ever again...

Ask if this is a GENUINE filter before you order it. The one I ordered (with the same name but from a company called "thepartsbiz") was not. It might be as good but, then again, it might not. However, by using the "MoistAIR" name, it implies it is a genuine filter. I eMailed the company (through Amazon) but they haven''t bothered to respond. Guess who I''m not buying from again? Looks like a number of vendors sell this product so who knows what they''re selling?

Like some others I received a BestAir brand instead of Bemis brand. It was ordered from the seller ''Buy-it-now-store''. I cannot vouch for the other sellers.

It lasted less than a month, turned rusty brown along the top within days and stank upon initial use. I went back on Amazon and ordered some Essick Air Products brand replacements (not realizing I was buying from the same seller). I had paid $7.89 for the Bemis brand the first time and $9.99 for the Essick the second time and received the same BestAir brand filters. I will not be ordering from ''Buy-it-now-store''

Austin Air Bedroom Machine Air Purifier

Austin Air Bedroom Machine Air Purifier - BlackYou have three speeds: Quiet with annoying hum, Loud blower, and extremely loud blower. The motor is not brushless, but that should not be a factor. The scroll for the squirrel cage fan leaks air IN and causes a deposit of dirt from entrained unfiltered air on the grill. The top needs a noise damping pad between it and the metal of the scroll to keep the motor hum down at low speed. There is no UV lamp, and the replacement filters cost more than a competitors complete unit.

If you can stand the white noise, the filtration seems almost absolute. Musty bedroom and pet odors are effectively removed. A flashlight shined through the air in a room with the purifier seems to pass without showing any floating lint or dust (Tindall effect). This is good.

I''m hesitant to buy the $440.00 filter kit, hot glue the power cord port and the speed control to stop the dirt entrainment, and find a rubber pad and glue it in the lid to stop the low speed hum. Because of this, I think I''ll get a cheaper, just as capable model with UV and electrostatic capability..Surround Air XJ-3800 Intelli-Pro Air Purifier with Photocatalytic Filter HEPA/Carbon Filter and Germicidal UV Lamp

Clean your carpets yourself with this machine a few times and it will pay for itself AND your carpets will be much cleaner than how the professional companies leave it.

My husband and I have five indoor pets (a lab, a sheltie, 3 cats who seem to constantly be puking hairballs on the carpet) and an 8 month old daughter, who also likes to puke pureed carrots on the carpet when we least expect it! Can I mention the occasional leaky poopy diaper?

This rug doctor gets all of the nasty cat vomit, baby BM''s and rainbow baby food (carrots, squash, sweet potatoes, blueberries) out of our lightly colored beige carpet. We have used this for dog vomit and dog diarrhea as well with no stains left behind.

My sister''s dog stayed with us once and peed on the carpet in the master bathroom. We used the rug doctor to clean it up. If you don''t get the smell out, once one animal pees in the house, they will all start doing it to mark territory! We cleaned the spot with the rug doctor until the water ran clear and I couldn''t smell anything in the carpet. When we replaced the carpet with tile and pulled the old carpet up, I looked for the pee stain. You could see a very, very faint brown outline of an irregular shape where the rug doctor solution had spread the urine out while cleaning the carpet. Curiosity got the better of me and I wondered if you could smell the pee UNDER the carpet, so I gave it a whiff. I couldn''t detect an odor (my nose is pretty sensitive).

We use this machine to clean the carpets in our home every six months. We vacuum (with a Dyson DC17) on a regular basis but still the water we pull out of the carpet is an opaque brown (I should probably clean my carpets more than every six months with five pets and a kid, but I don''t make the time to do so).

Another user mentioned using a slower pace with the machine than what the manufacturer recommends. We also do this. It seems you have to go pretty slow for it to do a really thorough job. Yes, it takes time, but when your carpets are as clean as they will ever be without being brand new, it''s worth it!

Some tips that have worked well for us:

-You don''t need nearly as much soap as they recommend. We use 1/2 or 1/3 of the recommended amount mixed with hot water and it does a great job (will save money on soap too!)

-We usually go back over the carpets a second and sometimes third time with just plain hot water to get out any residual soap (yes, even with the reduced amount) until the water we pull out of the carpet is clear (or nearly so). THEN I feel like the carpets are really clean.

-When cleaning up pet urine (if this is an issue for you): Use a flourescent black light (you can purchase one from a party store). This will make urine (and some other stains) glow in the dark. This way, you know EXACTLY where it is. After cleaning, you can check with the black light to see if you got all of the urine up or if you need to go over it again a few more times. The room needs to be completely dark (do at night) for the stain to show under the black light.

The rug doctor makes your house smell nice and fresh.

We just use the plain solution. The rug doctor came with some "special" samples like pet stain remover, odor remover, etc... Which I will probably use if and when our first bottle of solution runs out. We have found that the original formula works just fine for all of our messes.

CONS:

Only one con that we are aware of: If you are spot cleaning and you mix up too much solution, you want to empty it out of the rug doctor so it doesn''t sit in there for months (mildew?). This is a royal pain. You either have to use all of the solution in your carpet (until it''s empty) or wrestle the rug doctor over a sink or bath tub and turn it upside down. This thing is heavy and somewhat cumbersome (especially if it''s full of water!). Even after dumping it upside down, there will still be a little bit of solution in it. It takes both me and my husband to empty it. One of us holds it on the edge of the bathtub while the other person pushes the button on the rug doctor to blow out all of the remaining solution in the bathtub. The person not balancing the rug doctor on the edge of the tub has to watch to see if the rug doctor is indeed done spouting out the residual solution. Yes, it''s a bit of a pain, but still very worth it. (UPDATE 2/13/11 THANKS TO ALL OF THE COMMENTATORS WE LEARNED YOU CAN HOLD THE UPHOLSTRY ATTACHMENT OVER THE DRAIN TO FLUSH LEFTOVERS OUT OF THE MACHINE THANKS EVERYONE FOR THIS VERY SIMPLE IDEA THAT WE NEVER THOUGHT OF ON OUR OWN!)

We have not used the upholstery attachment, but if I ever do, I will come back and comment on it.

*****UPDATE***** 02/13/2011

Well, it took a little while but as promised I''m back to comment on using the upholstry attachment ok, I haven''t used it but my husband used it on the carpet under the floor mats in our vehicles. He claims it was not difficult and I am pleased that the greasy, dirty stains came out of the carpet inside the vehicles and now both smell really clean! Our rug doctor is still going strong (we moved a year ago and told the previous homeowners to not bother cleaning the carpets we did it ourselves) and of course we were able to make all the carpet in the house look like new! We had painters who left a mess and we were able to get the paint drops out of the carpet with a little elbow grease and our rug doctor. Still doing an EXCELLENT job on the numerous cat pukes. The kids are now almost ages 4 and 2, we still have 2 dogs and now 2 cats. Rug Doctor cleans up all our messes (and the kids'' and the pets''). We also inherited a dirty kitchen rug from the previous homeowners we decided to give Rug Doctor a go at it and the rug changed colors before our eyes. Turns out the previous homeowner left us a pretty nice rug! When cleaning rugs on the hardwood, I am very paranoid, I roll up the rug and put a painter''s plastic drop cloth underneath then unroll rug and then clean keeps my hardwood floors nice and dry! Hope this helps!

Still love my Rug Doctor. Still highly recommended!!!

With two little kids and spills and food and a cat who ups his hairballs we had a lot of soil. I was expecting to have a slight shadow of where the dirt was...but no...the carpet looks almost new and its a light beige color. I had to change the water every 3x3 to 6x6 area depending on how many passes I had to make over it, which were about 3 on average and as many as 6-7 in places. I did NOT use the prespot and did not use the anti-foam. As long as you don''t run the clean water directly on the OXY solution it won''t foam. I used a measuring cup and poured the Oxy into the tank either before or after the clean water. The biggest issue is they recommend pulling the machine at the rate of 1ft per second. That is wayyyy tooo fast! For me it was more like 1ft every 5-10 seconds on average and up to 20seconds on tougher areas. My wife and I were tremendously impressed with the results. Drying time 4-5-6 hours in places I didn''t have to make too many passes longer for other areas. Finally, this machine sounds like a jet engine, real loud. I strongly recommend use some sort of hearing protection. Even double protection with the ear plugs and Mickey Mouse ears on top of it. Also had to brush the fuzzies off the brushes halfway through using a medium bristle brush.

The bottom line: The professional companies send in their guy who go across your carpet a time or two then leave. This machine does a tremendous job because you get to take your time and clean it properly

This machine does an adaquate job scrubbing the carpet. My carpet is clean now; however, there are a few tar spots that were not removable. This is not the machine''s fault it''s road tar.

I found that if I pulled the machine backwards I had much better results. Also, mixing in ''oxyclean'' with the water helps. And of course I had to make more than one pass with the machine, but that should be a given you have to scrub the dirt out of the carpet.

Give the carpet a good 24-hour period to dry with fans or A/C running. Not sure how the previous review was able to walk on the carpet within 3 hours, but that sounds as though the carpet wasnt saturated enough to be cleaned properly.

This isn''t a magic machine. You have to make several passes on the carpet, but that should be a given.

If you have only one or two carpets to clean once a year, this machine is likely more expensive than your needs. However, if you have a whole house/apartment of carpets, or you plan on cleaning the carpets more than once a year this commercial grade machine is for you.

Landlords, this machine is for you.

I rented one of the store units after a bad spill at my Bistro to try and save my new carpet. It blew my mind so I boought one. I took it home and used it right after I had spent over $700.00 to clean the carpets at my home and it was night and day. I took it to my neighbors to try before she replaced her pet urine stained white carpet. The results you would have to see to believe as the carpet was almost black in area''s. Before I was done she bought one I am getting a second one for my home. Just remeber take your time till you get your carpets clean. I would take your time and do it right the first time or if it needs it a second time, but if your carpet is that bad there is nothing you can do but replace it and buy one of these and keep it clean.

I had rented Rug Doctor (the red one you see in supermarkets) for many years. When it (the blue one) finally became available to purchase I was thrilled. It is expensive, but well worth it. And good carpeting is MORE expensive. I bought mine at Costco. I''ve had experience with other brands. I had a Hoover before buying a Rug Doctor. The Hoover model was cheap plastic, it leaked, and had way too many little parts to break. It reminded of the game Mouse Trap from the 70''s, a lot of plastic crap. It didn''t last long.

The Rug Doctor has very little to it, which is good. There''s a clean water tank, a dirty water tank and a lot of suction. I think what I noticed over the years when I rented one was the design of the Rug Doctor. All the water sits in the front of the machine and on top of the suction/brush area. I think this helps to weigh it down so it really sucks the water out of the carpet. The hand attachment has a lot of sucking power as well.

Is there anything I don''t like about? Sure, nothing''s perfect. It''s VERY loud ( I wear earplugs while using it). It can be heavy to pull.. it''s a good work out cleaning your carpets! The connectors to use the hand attachment can be tricky to put in the back of the machine...then again I''d say they''re extremely secure connections.

I still give it 5 stars. It''s the best carpet cleaner hands down.

Watersafe WS425W Well Water Test Kit Save 24% Off

Watersafe WS425W Well Water Test KitWe have well water which we had tested by a local lab a year or two ago. I like to have the water tested regularly, mainly for bacteria, but the local lab charges $100 (if we want lead testing included, it''s $200). I ordered this test kit thinking that I''d compare it to the results we got from the lab when we last had our water tested. If anything looked weird or came back abnormal, we''d pay the local lab to test the water.

The tests that I''ve done so far have given results that are in line with what we were expecting. The local lab gives some directions that I followed when pulling my water samples. They include the following:

1) Use cold water only.

2) For the bacteria test: let your water run for 5 minutes before you take a sample. Don''t take a sample from a swivel faucet (commonly found in kitchens). They told me that it''s best to take the water sample from the bathroom faucet or tub.

3) For the lead test: Take your sample at a point where the water has been sitting in the pipes for at least 6 hours. They recommended first thing in the morning, before flushing the toilets, etc.

The instructions included with the test kit were fine, but I would have appreciated something a bit more in depth, like those provided by our local lab. Still, this test is a fraction of what the local lab charges, and at least from what I can see, it appears to be fairly accurate.

You need to carefully read the instructions before starting any of the tests. Once familiar with the procedure you are off and running. I am a professional real estate inspector and I test water wells with this kit and have found the test results accurate by comparing to other test results using different test methods.

Contrary to the other reviewer, I found the instructions OK and the tests reliable. I was led to these tests as the cheapest tests available that pass EPA certification.

I found out that our city water in Columbia, SC had measurable, but not over limit, levels of pesticide contamination.

I bought and used these tests repeatedly, and will probably do so again.

Had a professional lab test water and was curious to see how home test kit compared. Home test kit results were virtually identical and included bacterial and fertilizer contamination tests, something the professional lab did not test for.

The instructions were clear. The tests were quick, except for one which took 24 hours, with unambiguous results. It covered a wide spectrum of tests. I was very happy with this product.

Austin Air Healthmate Jr Replacement Filter

Austin Air Healthmate Jr Replacement Filter w/ Prefilter - Sandstone
  • Prefilter included for outside of main filter.
  • 6.5 lbs of solid activated carbon and zeolite for odor and gas removal.
  • Easy replacement of existing filter.
  • 30 sq. ft. true HEPA medical filter medium.

I bought the Austin Healthmate Jr. about 2 years ago for a dusty area and have been happy with it. The three things I like best about it are that you don''t have to buy filters very often because you can vacuum the outside of the filter and that it''s relatively quiet. The other thing is that it takes air in on all four sides and blows the filtered air out through the top area. It seems to do a good job of filtering the air. It''s more energy efficient than air purifiers I''ve used in the past and it has 3 speeds which is nice.

If you use it in really dusty conditions like mine, you can replace the pre-filter more often than the big filter. I''ve found this type of material that I could cut to fit at a local hardware store. You get a pre-filter with it. You have to take it apart to replace the pre-filter and filters, but it isn''t difficult. You can turn off the machine and vacuum it from the outside and that seems to help the filters last longer. Of course, you''ll want to use a vacuum cleaner with a hepa filter or you defeat the purpose. I replace mine about once a year, but I think the average person could go much longer.

The only reason I didn''t give it 5 stars is because I don''t really have any way of measuring how good of a job it really does, only that it seems to do a good job in terms of allergies, odors, etc. There are so many air filters out there and so many claims, that it''s hard to sort them out. But if I had to buy a filter for another room, I would probably buy this brand again.

We''ve used the Austin Air Healthmate Jr. for over six years. The unit is quiet and dependable. Austin Air recommends changing the filter at least every five years. We purchased our replacement filter from Amazon at a very reasonable price, which was much less expensive than our local allergy store.

I bought three Austin Air Healthmates almost a decade ago, to help deal with my many inhalant allergies. Two Jr models and one full sized one. I put the full sized one in the living room where I exercise and watch TV, one in the bedroom, and one in my home office. When I remodeled a garage for a home office, installing paneling, vinyl flooring, dropped ceiling, and more, I put the Healthmate Jr in the room while finishing construction was still underway. I never walked in and smelled the classic "plastic" smells that are quite common with new vinyl flooring, plastic coated paneling, or polystyrene ceiling tiles. I have seen my allergy symptoms decrease, especially when I stay indoors during peak pollen days. I also don''t have half the dust my friends have in their houses. I recommend the Healthmate for anyone with hay fever or allergies, and especially for those who work at home or for retired folks. The filters only have to be replaced every five years, and cost less than the cheap air filter machines with filters that have to be replaced monthly.

Doesn''t deal well with cigar smoke but works exceptionally well with standard household odors like cooking smells. Helpful with allergens too.

Well now that I have it with my Berkey, Im glad I got it.

Its a good looking piece and feels of good quality plastics and materials, it feels very sturdy over all.

The item makes use of the filter that much better and easier to see just how full it is.

I would highly recommend paying the extra and picking one of these up with your berkey order.

BISSELL Lift-Off Deep Cleaner Save 26% Off

BISSELL Lift-Off Deep Cleaner, 94Y2We have pets and children, so we''ve had a few Bissell "Spot Bots" and carpet shampooers in the past. We''ve also had opportunity to rent machines from retail stores and have used professional carpet cleaning services a few times. The "Spot Bot" and Bissell Pro-Heat that we''ve used most extensively, worked well, but we looked forward to the opportunity to try this system because something that combined the portability of Spot Bot, with the power of the Pro-Heat seemed ideal.

Our expectations were pretty high for this machine, and we weren''t disappointed at all. Both as a portable machine and as a full blown carpet shampooer, it does an exceptional job. It cleans carpet and upholstery even better than the previous Bissell machines, and is easy to use. I really liked having the portable spot cleaner combined with the carpet cleaner both because of the space savings, but also because of simplicity. It is really nice to only have to keep one machine clean, which is sometimes a messy job depending on what you''ve been using it for.

I think that this is now the best home system on the market, especially at the sub-$300 price point. The Hoover systems were always very similar to the Bissell Pro-Heat, but the improvements in this "Lift-Off" model push Bissell ahead in our opinion. It is certainly better than the Rug Doctor rental systems that are nowhere near as good as even the Pro-Heat.

The things we really like about this system are:

Combined design makes for easy storage, use, and clean-up. We really like the fact that our days of having two separate systems are over.

Power and cleaning. This system does a great job on stains and on full floor cleaning. It is a noticeable improvement over the effectiveness of the Pro-Heat, and even that did a very good job.

Price. A good Spot Bot and a good Carpet Cleaner typically each cost what this machine is priced at separately. You really are getting two machines for the price of one.

Suction. I think that the reason this machine works so well is that they have really improved the suction. It sucks almost all of the dirt, solution, and water back into its tank, leaving the carpet almost dry just a few minutes after you finish.

I highly recommend that you consider this machine.

Factors

I had an old Sears/Kenmore carpet cleaner based on a wet/dry vac and it was monstrously heavy and noisy. It did not have rotating brushes, but did remove dirt fairly well. When the water pump broke, I needed something else. The Amazon reviews for the Hoover models are better than any of the Bissells, but upon closer inspection there are a substantial number of Hoover owners who report shearing off the brush plastic drive-shaft after only a few uses. This is a $30 replacement! Consumer Reports (Oct 2010) says that all the larger Hoover and Bisssell cleaners clean equally well, but that Bissell models are somewhat quieter. They also report that Bissell vacuums are more reliable than Hoover (and I suppose carpet cleaners will be similar). Furthermore, Bissell has a 2 year warranty and Hoover has a one year warranty (although in some Amazon reviews, Hoover owners report only a 90 day warranty!). The Bissell Lift-off Deep Cleaner model 27F6 (red) was on sale at Target so I took a chance it would clean OK and be reliable.

NOTE: Bissell lists 4 model numbers for this unit (94Y2, 27F6,35K3 and 73H5). They appear to differ mostly in the attachments included. The Amazon model is 94Y2, but it appears identical to 27F6 except is green, but it does NOT appear to include the "deep reach tool" I so love (see below)!

The Manual

You would think that for the $$$$ I spent Bissell could have included a good manual, but no. The manual is spartan with murky illustrations. It took me longer than I would care to admit to figure out where to put in the 4 screws to assemble it. There are seemingly 4 obvious holes for the screws, but these are not correct. The actual holes are somewhat hidden even though they are "marked" with almost invisible arrows. The cleaner disassembles cleverly for cleaning and storage, but it is a challenge to figure out how to do this from the manual illustrations. The quick start guide has color pictures, but they are tiny, tiny. Larger more detailed color pictures would be very desirable. Come on how expensive could this be?

The Lift-off Portable Cleaner

The unit is made so the carpet cleaner section easily lifts off the base (by pressing a pedal) to convert into a portable spot cleaner. I thought that this was just a gimmick, but I was wrong! It is the best part of the Bissell cleaner. The lift off cleaner with its 6 ft flexible hose fits PERFECTLY ON STAIR TREADS and it is light and easy to move. THIS IS GREAT! Start at the top of the stairs and slowly work your way down a stair at a time using the included "deep reach tool" (may not be included in the Amazon unit). Remember to keep the tool pressed firmly against the rug when releasing cleaning solution or it will spray all over your pants!! The results on my hard to clean carpeted stairs with somewhat matted carpeting were remarkably good. The "deep reach tool" has a brush plus hard plastic prongs to dig into matted carpet and raise the pile. I''ll admit that I only did the matted down parts of the stairs, and now these formerly dirty parts have a noticeably higher pile (about 1/4 inch)! It looks almost new (almost) and the result has so far lasted a day with light traffic. So I now may have to do the rest of the stairs so that the "clean" parts will look as good as the formerly matted parts. The "deep reach tool" itself is not easy to clean out.

UPDATE 11/8/11: Stair treads still look good after 1 week. The carpet has not yet returned to its formerly crushed/matted state after 1 week of use.

Water Removal

Water removal really depends on the carpet type. Deep pile carpets retain more water than others. With a ceiling fan my deep pile carpets took 2-3 hours to dry, but in areas without the fan the carpets took 8-10 hours. I can''t blame Bissell since even a potent high hp wet/dry vac was not able to get out any more water. It is not clearly indicated in the manual, but the Bissell has a overflow preventer that shuts off the vacuum suction if the dirty water level becomes too high or if the cleaning solution is empty (or close to empty kind of annoying). If so, you will have to correct the problem and then turn the vacuum on again. All carpet cleaners (especially rentals) dribble a bit of cleaning solution (from solution left in the tubing) when shut off. The Bissell is somewhat better in this regard.

Carpet Cleaning

Consumer Reports says that all the larger Hoover and Bisssell cleaners clean equally well and I am satisfied with the results from the Bissell. If my carpets were dirtier, the results would have been more dramatic, but the dirty water was indeed dirty. Some carpet cleaners have one water tank for the dirty water with the clean water placed in a bladder located inside the dirty water tank. The Bissell Lift-off Deep Cleaner has two removable tanks which I think is better. The dirty water tank is easy to remove and dump. The clean/soapy water tank is easy to fill (although harder to dry out for storage) and contains 3 quarts (6 lbs). I did not use the included bottle of Bissell cleaner solution since I used up an older bottle of carpet cleaner I had sitting around (it seemed to work well). The tanks have to be emptied often, but if Bissell had made these tanks bigger then the unit would (of course) weigh more and be harder to move. I feel the current size is a good compromise.

Cleaning Solution Usage

You will go through the cleaner solution in a hurry! Some people are concerned about the amount of solution a carpet cleaner uses. Actually, more is better. Remember that a small amount of water will always remain on the carpet (no matter how good the carpet cleaner is). Now look at your dirty water tank some of THAT muddy water is remaining on the carpet! The more solution that is used in cleaning, the more dilute the dirty water should become, and thus less dirt will remain on the carpet. Also keep in mind that the slower you go (and the more thoroughly the cleaner cleans) the more cleaning solution will be used. People who report they only use a little solution are probably going too fast. When your carpets are relatively clean, you can go faster and use less solution. If you are worried about cost, just use a cheaper carpet cleaner solution (they probably work all the same anyway). Bissell recommends 2 oz of their 2X concentrated cleaning solution per tank.

Rinse Cycle

Many carpet cleaner models from Hoover and Bissell have a switch to change from cleaning to rinse. The Bissell Lift-off Deep Cleaner does not have this so if you want to rinse you will have to clean the carpet first and then change to water to rinse the carpet. Doing so will probably be faster than to rinse after every pass anyway. Bissell does not recommend rinsing. Also consider that most modern cleaning solutions contain ingredients designed to protect the carpet that you may not wish to rinse off (such as ScotchGuard protection). When used as directed and after the carpet is dry it is impossible to tell if you have rinsed (no discernible residue). I don''t rinse.

Weight is NOT a problem

Some other Amazon reviewers here have suggested that this Bissell is heavy. No. I would say instead that it is very light! Here''s why. All Hoover and Bissell cleaners are fairly heavy/bulky and difficult to carry. This cleaner is very easy to move because you merely lift off the portable cleaner from the base. Now you have two easy to carry parts (base = 12 lbs; portable cleaner = 13.5 lbs). Carry the base and portable cleaner separately upstairs, then press to click back together (make sure both sides click) and fill the tank with cleaning solution (6 lbs). Easy!

Fiber Bunnies (balls)

All carpet cleaners (both Bissell and Hoover) with active spinning brushes liberate a few fibers from your carpet and roll them into fiber balls. Assuming you don''t clean your carpets daily, this should not contribute to carpet wear. Be aware that the rotating brushes on your vacuum cleaner also do the same, but you never see the bunnies because the vacuum cleaner immediately picks them up. Carpet cleaners have a vacuum slit too small to pick up the bunnies so you will see them scattered over the floor. If this will greatly distress you, do not get get a cleaner with rotating brushes (but of course the rotating brushes improve cleaning performance).

Durability and Maintenance

To be determined. As mentioned above, the cleaner disassembles cleverly for cleaning and storage, but the "deep reach tool" does not seem easy to clean out. I will try to update.

Etc.

Another reviewer here got her unit through Amazon''s Vine program. You may notice that I am also sometimes a Vine reviewer, but I bought this unit ($$$$) and this review is not a part of the Vine program. As the other reviewer explained, Amazon does not pressure Vine reviewers to write good reviews.

Buy BISSELL Lift-Off Deep Cleaner Now

I have never owned my own carpet cleaner, to be honest. When we''ve felt the need to shampoo carpets in the past we''ve always rented the machine from our local grocery store (what a beast!) but this Bissell deep cleaner is one fine machine!

Upon opening the box I was a little overwhelmed (it''s a large box and a complicated looking device), but I was quickly put to ease by the actual simplicity of operating this cleaner. Assembling was simple: take a screw driver and screw on the handle. Took me just a couple minutes (and I am NOT a "handy" type, but the husband wasn''t home and I was too anxious to wait). There were two instruction booklets, one was a quick start type with pictures and just a couple pages, the other was a full several page manual. I appreciated both. In reality, it was easy to get this cleaner up and running. Once you get to know it and learn the basics, it''s a snap.

In the box was a little bottle of Bissell''s cleaner, which I appreciated since I didn''t have any on hand but I wanted to try this sucker out right away. Filling the tank is pretty easy, as well as emptying the dirty water. When I first started running the machine I was concerned that the water wouldn''t last long, and this machine would guzzle the water & cleaner. That was not the case! It seemed to push a lot of water out into the carpet, but the tank still lasted quite a while so it is well designed in that area as well.

First I tried out the spot cleaner. Can I just say I adore this cleaner''s 2 in 1 capabilities! LOVE that I can spot clean an area rug, the upholstery, and the car with ease! And YES, I''ve done all three such things already all went off without a hitch. I''m especially impressed with how clean it got my grandparents old Ethan Allen upholstered chairs from the 1960s. It took intimidating spots out of my area rug without any hesitation, and the ability to shampoo my car out without a handful of quarters at some overpriced car wash is NICE.

I was also very pleased with the upright-style cleaning job it did. At first I was concerned it got my carpet overly wet, but when it dried fairly quickly (within an hour or two, with a ceiling fan on) I was happy. With the hand-held nozzle on the spot cleaning portion the top is clear plastic, so you can literally SEE all the dirt coming up out of your carpet. You fill the tank up with clean water, plus a couple ounces of the Bissell carpet cleaning solution, but when you''re done cleaning you can SEE the filthy water. I''ll be honest, I''m a little shocked at how dirty our carpets were, but also makes me feel SO good about seeing all that dirt come right out. This machine has some powerful suction, too.

I have to say, you need to be physically capable of running this machine in order to get the best use of it. Most adults can handle it just fine, I''m sure, but it is like a large vacuum. Also, in order to use the spot cleaner on rugs and carpets, you should be able to get down on your knees and be able to scrub with the spot cleaning device. I wouldn''t necessarily recommend this machine for a weak elderly person or someone who is not completely physically able.

Overall, while I think this carpet cleaner looked large and intimidating to start, it''s practically my new best friend. I''m serious I have a toddler and a baby who just learned to crawl. I''m loving being able to go through my house and scrub that dirt out from our carpets. Unlike the grocery store rentable cleaners, I was surprised to find that the Bissell doesn''t seem to cause that awful "just cleaned the carpets" smell, either. I can smell a little bit of that scent, but it''s just seeming more fresh than it ever has in the past with those other machines.

This is absolutely a product I would recommend to someone looking for a versatile carpet cleaner. I feel like you just get the best of both worlds with this 2 in 1 style. The spot cleaning portion is brilliant, but the upright style also gets the job done. We''re very happy with this machine!

Post-edit: Since posting this review a few fellow Amazon customers have asked questions about this cleaner, please see the comments section on my review for ever more information. And feel free to ask additional questions, also!

I have a lot of experience with steam cleaners. My mom, an avid cleaner, owned no fewer than six machines during the time I was old enough to use them (around 12) until the time I moved out of the house ten years later. I''ve used both Hoovers and Bissells and a Spot Bot (not included in the machine count above). When it was time to buy a steam cleaner of my own, I gravitated to the lift-off because I wishfully thought that this machine could be both an upright and hand-held steam cleaner, but unfortunately, the compromise of mobility makes this a bad upright machine.

The machine''s biggest draw back is its very small tank capacity. The tank is tiny and if you have a room with any real dirt or size, you are going to be refilling it often. I refilled it three times for one very dirty 12x12 room. The dynamics of the machine is also a little weird since all the weight is at the bottom of the machine. You have to push it a little harder to get it going and it''s a little difficult to see how the brushes are spinning/how much water is being sucked up because of the shape of the lift off unit.

Refilling the machine is easy, removing and lowering the portable unit is easy and I''m sure it''s great as an upholstery cleaner. But if you are looking for an upright machine first and a spot cleaner second, then buy two machines, because the Lift-Off is definitely a compromise for large spaces.

I have owned a Hoover brand carpet cleaner, rented Rug Doctor carpet cleaners and had my carpets professionally cleaned. I own 3 dogs who occasionally have `accidents'' inside, a pre-teen daughter prone to spills, and a husband who thinks the house is self-cleaning. Berber carpets in the living, hall and dining areas, as well as a home gym. The bedrooms have an older shag carpet. I''ve never used a machine spot cleaner before, and love the idea of a machine that gives you two cleaners for the price of one.

Enter Bissell''s Lift-Off Deep Cleaner...

The Machine:

It''s a heavy one 30+ pounds. Moves remarkably well though, despite its heft. The Lift-Off portable section is about 15 pounds by itself. The directions are somewhat sparse but by looking at the labeled diagrams and reading the short `how to''s'' you can figure it out.

No diagram for the Lift-Off specifically is in either guide and the directions for portable spot cleaning mode are somewhat poor. I could get the Lift-Off portion off, but found reseating it to be a bit of a struggle, with the directions offering no help. Eventually I ended up at the Bissell site watching videos for guidance. That did help, and I''d recommend checking it out prior to using this Bissell product.

A Quick Start Guide and a Bissell User''s Guide are included in the package, along with the deep cleaner and a starter 8 ounce bottle of Bissell''s 2x Professional Deep Cleaning Formula.

The portable Lift-Off is where the dirty water container and the water/solution tank is housed. It sits on top of the rolling base with the brushes. A foot pedal on the left (as you face the machine) releases the Lift-Off for use. The cord containment is wrapped around the Lift-Off portion, and the hose for the Lift-Off is wrapped around the opposite side of the Lift-Off from the cord. The place where you attach one of two attachments to the Lift-Off hose is upright towards the right back (facing machine) of the Bissell. Overall, it is a very efficient design.

The on/off switch is on the Lift-Off and operates the entire Bissell Deep Cleaner. You need to depress it and let the machine sit running for one minute prior to using it after you add the water/solution tank when it''s filled and ready to go. NOTE: The Bissell is noisy sort of like a small jet engine, so you may want to wear ear protection if using this machine for a long time.

The `trigger'' is on the handle. You have to install the handle prior to using the Bissell. This takes 4 Phillips head screws (included) and a long-handled Phillips head screwdriver (not included). Patience is key when doing this one. The screw holes are not visible, but the holes are marked with arrows on the black plastic handle. You have to feel your way until the screws seat and start to work their way in. A mildly frustrating endeavor, but it worked eventually and the handle is securely fastened to the unit once these screws are in place.

The Bissell Formula:

Bissell recommends you use only their formulas in this machine. The current Bissell formulas are 2x''s as concentrated as before leaving you to believe you''d need less to do the same job. Honestly, I''m not sure if that''s the case, but the formulas are 2x''s the price of non-concentrated formulas!

I managed to find a 64 ounce bottle for the 50 ounce price at my local store. I had planned on buying the solution from Amazon with the buy 3 get one free (4 for 3) promotion, but even with that promotion, it was cheaper to buy it locally. So check solution prices before you buy. I also got a Bissell Pretreat spray for over 50% less than it was on Amazon at a local store.

Several Bissell formula choices are available: Bissell 2X Professional Deep Cleaning Formula, 48 ounces, 78H63, Bissell 2X Fiber Cleansing Advanced Formula, 24 Ounces, 62E5, Bissell 2X Pet Stain and Odor Advanced Formula, 24 Ounces, 99K5, Bissell 2X Multi-Allergen Advanced Formula, 24 Ounces, 89Q5, Bissell 2X Natural Orange Extract Advanced Formula, 24 Ounces, 83P3, and Bissell 2X Lavender Essence Advanced Formula, 24 Ounces, 34B5. I suggest if you plan on cleaning a larger than 500 sq'' area, you pick up more solution than the starter 8 ounce that came with the Bissell Lift-Off Deep Cleaner.

The Bissell 2x Professional Deep Cleaning Formula smells very fresh. Strong while cleaning your carpets, but that softens as the carpets dry. By the time it dried completely, it was barely there for me, but a faint clean scent remained. If you are highly sensitive to scents, you may want to avoid it though, and try the Allergen formula.

Warning: regarding Professional Deep Cleaning Formula strength if you don''t want your hands to get chaffed, don''t let your skin touch the solution or solution/water mixture. I''d suggest wearing rubber gloves while emptying and filling tanks I didn''t and my hands paid the price.

Carpet Deep Cleaning:

I chose to test drive this model in our home gym. Daily use in this room, but not heavy traffic. I vacuumed well with a Dyson DC28 Animal vacuum first. Some spots and high traffic areas were visible on the carpet, and were sprayed with Bissell Tough Stain PreCleaner, 22 ounces, 4001 5 minutes prior to deep cleaning.

To begin you use 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per tank full of Bissell Formula solution (your choice) into hot tap water to the line on the water/solution tank. I suggest using a funnel not included) for this task, and putting the water in first, as if you put the solution first you will get a lot of foam. Swirl to mix. Place tank into spot on machine. Turn on the machine to pre-heat for one minute prior to deep cleaning or spot cleaning.

Solution will be dispensed quickly if you follow the directions of pulling the trigger and holding it as you move the Bissell forward and back, and then releasing the trigger and going back and forth to extract the solution.

Some carpets may only need you to hold the trigger down going one way, as on the Berber it was easy to see the carpet got a good dose of water and solution the first time this would have saved on solution and multiple tank refills too. Bottom line: this thing really sucks down the juice so be prepared to fill the water/solution tanks many times for a large area!

For approximately every two water/solution refills, you need to empty the dirty water tank. At least that was the case for me. There is an audible change that indicates the unit is sucking air the dirty water tank may or may not be to the `full'' line (mine wasn''t there yet), but it''s full and time to dump the dirty water. Grit may also be visible on the red filter as you lift off the tank, and you would want to wipe it off as it affects suction and performance of the machine.

Grit and carpet fibers tended to collect on the bottom of the machine behind the rollers as it cleaned even after a thorough Dyson vacuuming. I took this to mean that the `deep cleaning'' was doing its job and pulling out the deeply embedded gunk.

Deep Cleaning Results:

Almost immediately the room you''re cleaning smells better. Amazing how much odors are picked up in carpets even with daily vacuuming

Most pre-treated spots (dog vomit old stains) seemed to disappear after cleaning the spot 2x''s with 5-6 slow passes over the stain in several directions. Larger traffic areas that were pre-treated and received the same treatment still showed a slight discoloration, but were much lighter right after cleaning. The water was black with dirt, so I wasn''t surprised.

As the spots dried, they were lighter, but still visible. Bissell suggests on their website that if this occurs, you use the Pretreat spray again and let it sit overnight before trying the Lift-Off spot cleaner. I will update my review after trying that one, but for now suffice to say that older spots may or may not come off the carpet, even with a pretreatment. You should see a positive difference if not elimination of new spots however.

Spot Cleaning with Lift-Off:

I tried the Lift-Off spot cleaner on heavily stained spots on Berber inside my home, inside my car, and on my couch''s upholstery. I must say I was more impressed with this part of the unit, than the deep cleaner.

Carpet spots in house: These were all dog vomit (mainly bile, some with blood old Lab is sweet, but at 12 she''s got a fussy tummy) spots, which have previously been cleaned with both OxyClean and Spot Shot. Neither worked well.

Carpet and Upholstery in car: coffee spills, chocolate stains, general dirt. About 8 years worth of general grime.

Couch Upholstery: general dirt and home odors no visible spots or stains.

I pre-treated all spots on the carpets for 20 hours with Bissell''s Pet Stain and Odor pre-treater (found locally, but not on Amazon). Vacuumed the area to be cleaned and then mixed the Bissell Professional Deep Cleaning Formula with hot water. I pre-heated the machine for 1 minute and then spot cleaned three spots on the carpet.

Because the brush on the attachment head seemed a bit wimpy for the stains (it''s good, but these are ''ugh'' stains...), I used a cleaning brush I have at home to scrub the area after putting the water/solution mix on to the area, then extracted the water via the Bissell portable. The power of extraction was GREAT you have to tip the head of the attachment down, but it''s easy to get the feel for it. Several passes in several directions left the area dry in 3 hours.

One tip while using the Lift-Off tilt the head down and over the area to be cleaned and hover about 2" over the area as you pull the trigger to dispense the solution. This covers a pretty wide path, and then you simply release the trigger, drag the attachment head securely over the stain to extract it. You do have to apply medium pressure to the head of the attachment and angle the head to get the maximum extraction of water and solution.

The stains in the carpet? Well, they are still there, but like the stains in the gym that were cleaned with the upright they are more faint. A huge improvement and I would have to credit the pretreatment, the Bissell Professional solution and the pull of the portable for this result. I intend to be more vigilant about immediate accident clean-ups now that I have this portable unit, and would imagine that if found in quickly and pre-treated with Bissell''s Pet products, new stains will be eliminated.

The car upholstery and carpet looked great. Brightened up my light gray interior on my 4Runner and smells nice too. Very quick and easy to use in the car. No more worries about muddy feet mucking up the carpet!

The hands-down winner in the portable testing was the couch. I didn''t think it was really dirty, but it had a cooking and pets smell to it. That''s completely gone and the navy blue fabric with threads of lighter colors, is now brighter and fresh looking. The muddy gunk I got out of it was amazing, and the Bissell was so easy to use, I''m actually looking forward to using it on all my furniture before and after the holidays.

Overall Rating for the Bissell Lift-Off Deep Cleaner: 4 out of 5

The deep cleaned carpet looked fresher, brighter and smelled great. I think it did `deep clean'' by comparison to the Hoover branded home cleaner and the Rug Doctor machines which just swirled things around on the top of the carpet and left a lot more water behind, for longer drying times.

The heat, the Bissell solution and great water extraction from Berber carpets, all left behind a good result. As good as a professional cleaning? No, but better than most home cleaning units and rentals I''ve tried, and you have the convenience of two machines for a lot of different jobs, and it all works well.

Really loved the Lift-Off portable though. It''s a 5 out of 5 in my opinion and a surprise. I will use it a lot and because it doesn''t suck down the solution and water quickly at all, it will save me a ton money in spray-on carpet and upholstery cleaners that never worked well anyway.

If this Bissell had been able to eliminate old stains on my carpets, had better directions and a bigger water/solution tank it would have been a 5 star machine overall. Can any machine do that? I''m not sure, but I''ll continue to look for it!

The Bissell Lift-Off Deep Cleaner is a great home unit for people with new carpets and furniture that they want to keep clean with semi-annual cleansing and spot clean-ups.

For those of us with older homes, less time for carpet cleaning, messy families, pets and old stains, it''s good, but not great in terms of a carpet cleaner. A solid, quality product with much to offer, it''s not a magic elixir to what is ailing your old carpets. While I had high hopes that stains would disappear with just a bit of extra effort as seen in the Bissell promo video, I''ve not found that to be true.

As for upholstery and fast clean ups of new messes, and cleaning your car...the portable Lift-Off cleaner is fantastic. A bit heavy, but you don''t have to hold it while it does its job.

Suggestions for Bissell:

1. Bigger Water/Solution Tank: the small tank of water/solution mix is quickly depleted while deep cleaning. I could only get a strip of carpet about 4''x6'' completed and then I''d have to refill the tank. That seemed far too frequently to be running to the sink, but probably not all that unusual for most home cleaning units.

2. Incorporate Videos: include a DVD of the helpful videos from the Bissell website, or improve the Lift-Off Deep Cleaner User''s Guide.

3. Easier Handle Attachment: figure out how to have the handle attached before it ships to the consumer. A tricky assembly, even with only 4 screws.

Is it worth the price? That depends upon the consumer. If you want an awesome spot cleaner and a good deep cleaner for sure it''s a deal. Particularly if you have a newer home with kids and pets.

If you only really see yourself using a deep cleaner, you may want to consider other Bissell Deep Cleaners which also have heat, but are less expensive. Like this one: Bissell ProHeat Upright Deep Cleaner, 25A3.
