I bought this filter after the water dispenser in my refrigerator died. It looks great on my countertop and produces very fresh-tasting "polished" water from my tap, without a trace of chlorine. Coffee and orange juice from frozen concentrate made with this water taste great -I even use the water in my humidifier, which makes the air in my house feel fresher, too. Installation was fairly easy, the unit comes with several faucet adapters, as well as a large plastic wrench for removing the hood to change filters. It feels light right out of the box but once there''s residual water in it from use it''s quite stable. I thought the hose from the faucet to the filter might get in the way when swinging the faucet from side-to-side but that hasn''t been the case -it''s long enough to allow the filter to sit next to my standard-size sink with no tugging. Water flow from the filter is very good, it fills a gallon pitcher in about 30 seconds (compared to my refrigerator, which took more than a minute just to fill a large glass). The valve that diverts water from the faucet to the filter works flawlessly, but expect a little drippage from the filter spout for a few minutes after use (not a big deal). I can''t verify the claims for what chemicals the filter is actually removing from my water (other Web sites say it reduces 97% of lead, mercury, etc.), but the taste of my tap water is greatly improved.

I''ve had mine for a couple of months and the flow rate hasn''t noticeably diminished yet. I fill up a water pitcher in the morning in order to make efficient use of the filter. It looks good and doesn''t get in my way like those faucet-mounted contraptions with much lower flow rates and dinky filters that don''t last very long you see in the stores. Only having to change filters annually is very convenient. Short of buying a whole-house filter this is the filter to get.

I waited a week of using the product before submitting a review. When you see such good reviews you start to think a couple of things is it the company themselves writing these reviews or people who haven''t really review the product properly, because reading these reviews your hoping that they are trustworthy to base your next buy on. Well I can say I really like this filter. Installation was easy and you really do taste the difference. I even went as far as to not only taste the water but look at it''s clarity, I used 2 clear see through containers catch water from the tap it''s self and water from the filter and you can see the difference when holding them together to look. I am now having my family try to invest and the fact that you have up to a year use of the filter with a family of four helps me to save money, I will always check though when filter needs to be changed. Other than me checking would like to know when do you know it actually needs changing would it be a year from installation these are the only questions I would ask.

HM Digital TDS-3 Handheld Meter

I just bought one of these units earlier today as my old unit had failed months ago and I noticed that my plants were having some difficulties with their growth. So, yeah, I paid a good bit more than it is being sold here but then again my plants were having troubles. So after some serious changes to my hydroponics system for my lettuce and tomato plants I hope to be seeing some good changes over the new week or so... I also found that I needed to implement some minor water cooling to my reservoir as well as this has a nice temperature meter built in as well. Water should be maintained at 75degF.

Right now I''m only running a 10gallon system but the way I have it setup I''m able to grow 16 Lettuce plants and 1 tomato plant.

I did have to re-calibrate the meter as soon as I got it as it was not reading any were it was supposed to, It was off by 140ppm. it was reading 860 when it should have been reading 1000, I was using some 1k sodium solution that I got at my local hydroponics store (30 min drive... not really local....)

The temp sensor in it seems pretty accurate as I tested it on some water that I left a thermometer in and left to come to room temp and tested the unit and then tested it again after leaving the water in the fridge all morning. It was pretty much spot on.

If I come across and problems I will adjust my review but this unit does come with a nice 3 year warranty and typically TDS meters will last a good 3-4 years without issue and can last 7+ years with low use.

Things to keep in mind for testing:

RO (reverse osmosis) water filtration system:

The difference from your tap water to RO water should not exceed 90% IMO. Typically once I get to 90% I will go ahead and replace the filters. To come to this figure simply test your tap water from the faucet write that reading down and then take another reading from water taken fro the RO system. Simply divide the numbers and you will have your percentage. subtract that number from 100 and that will give you the efficiency level of your RO system.

When testing for your hydroponics system you will want to keep a note pad so that you can keep track of your numbers so you don''t forget them...

Remember to test your water that you are using first before adding anything to it... Write that number down. I just like having my base numbers available...

Now adjust your PH of that water and test again, write that number down.

Now to get the proper PPM of nutrients in your system you simply add the PPM value you want your plants to have (typically 1200 for nutrients for general growth and as little as 600 for seedlings) to your prior number you got from your water/ph adjustment. Once you have those values.

Now write down what your total value is. This is about the amount you will need to maintain the system at.

other calculations:

Seeing as you have the PPM value of your base water and your PH adjusted water you should know how much 1cc affects 1 gallon of water. You will want to figure this number out so that if you find you need to adjust your PH again you will be able to know how it will affect your PPM value and be able to adjust the numbers accordingly as to what your final total PPM will need to be with your nutrients in the system.

Hope this helps those of you debating on getting this type of meter to understand the importance of this type of meter.

If I have any problems with this unit I will come back to adjust my review.

little did we know that after you unhook the ice machine water hose, you have to re-cut the hose before re-atttaching. Or, we would not have bought a new connector. :-( it was cheap and we learned via internet searches becasue when we hooked this one up it leaked too (not the connector but the hose the cutting the hose thing! It did not come with instructions is why we left out that hose cut part. Anyway... it works. and gets a star less for no instructions included.

I got one kit just in case, and can recommend having one as a backup. So far, I''ve washed the original set that came in the air cleaner twice, with no noticeable breakdown of the pleated filter. The rubber gasket seems like it will last indefinitely, and there is no structural breakdown when you wash it.

Washing the filter is a bit of a mess, but obviously the low-cost option for keeping your air filter running. Keep one of these kits for the day you don''t have time or interest in washing the original one, or when you do wind up seeing the pleated filter break down.

Eventually, I would guess the pleated filter will break down, and you may also tear the foam part, so keeping a spare set handy is a good idea. I do like the 1030000 air cleaner -saves your lungs AND prevents dust from escaping if you have a basement workshop...

The things that it filters out are far greater than simpler in-line filters, especially giardia. The only problem that I have is getting replacement filter cartridges for it. This bracket looked a little light at first but, once mounted to a plywood wall with 4 screws, it became very stiff and works well as a mount for the water filter housing.

Either someone changed the design or somebody made it wrong. I have purchased these before over the years[elsewhere] and they were the correct width for the water filter I purchased. This time however, the bracket is 3/8" wider than the width of the water filter housing. {the bracket and filter housing and filter were sold as a 3 part kit} On top of that, I believe the holes for the plumbing fittings are too large. I have copper pipe in my house and used 3/4" copper fittings into the filter housing. The holes are so large, that the fitting almost goes through the holes in the bracket. IF you are familiar with 3/4" copper male adapters, they have flat sides on them so you can wrench them. Even with these flat sides, they almost go through the holes. To describe it, the ''corners'' of the wrench fitting are all that keeps the fitting from falling through the hole in the bracket. I looked for large washers at my local orange box store but they didn''t have anything. Also, to install, you have to squeeze the bracket down to meet the filter body. The old ones were a snug fit with smaller holes. These are better than nothing, but I''m not thrilled with it. IF you do the same, remember to solder the fittings into some pipe stubs sep from the filter housing, then install into the filter after they cool down or you will melt the water filter housing.

I first bought an under the counter reverse osmosis water filtration system for my kitchen.
