Cuisinart CHW-12 Coffee Plus 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker Save 55% Off

Cuisinart CHW-12 Coffee Plus 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker with Hot Water System, Black/StainlessSince we don''t usually need a full pot of coffee except on weekends -I typically just grab a Starbucks "Via" instant coffee on the way to work in the morning (a pretty remarkable innovation, by the way) -I was attracted to the hot water dispenser on this coffee maker. I like it particularly because of its 58-ounce capacity -meaning that you don''t have to keep refilling it if you''re just using it once each morning to fill a car mug. My wife prefers tea to coffee, and she loves being able to get a cup of really hot water whenever she likes. (We fill it with spring water, and the results are superb.) I haven''t had any problem with the "add water" light, as another reviewer apparently did. I was concerned about squandering energy by keeping a reservoir of water constantly hot, but it doesn''t. It keeps only about 13 ounces of water at serving temperature; the rest of the reservoir is unheated. It doesn''t take all that much energy to keep 13 ounces of water hot. And if you know you won''t be wanting hot water for a while, you can just turn it off with the on/off button. I had expected it to heat water instantly through some kind of coil system -much like an under-sink unit does -but not so. As a result, if the unit hasn''t been on, there''s about a 3-minute wait for the water to reach the right temperature. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because I wish the hot water dispenser were programmable in the way the coffee maker is, but it isn''t. You have to start it manually. (No you can''t use an outlet timer because the unit has an electronic on/off switch.) I also wish the hot water dispenser had a temperature adjustment (the coffee maker does); the water it dispenses is so hot that I have to wait for several minutes before I can drink any beverage I make with it. Finally, some Cuisinart coffee makers have a strength adjustment but this doesn''t. But these are minor quibbles; it''s still a great appliance. The coffee maker itself works as well as an automatic drip coffee maker can -always a function of trial-and-error at the beginning (what kind and how much coffee you use). It uses a cone filter (#4) -which in my humble opinion always delivers better coffee than the flat filters used in so many other coffee makers -including a lot of Cuisinart models -and the water is sprayed onto the coffee by a showerhead array in the reservoir lid. (Tip for review "Me2": Pour water into the coffee maker by putting the lip of the carafe on the rear LEFT corner and pour it in that way. It''s a lot easier and you won''t spill any.)

I looked at a LOT of different coffee makers before deciding on this model. Buying a coffee maker has to be one of the hardest things to buy. The problems come in because everyone has a different take on what coffee is supposed to taste like and unfortunately many of them are dead wrong. The most important thing for anyone that really enjoys coffee the way it is supposed to be made is that the water heats up to a sufficient temperature (greater than 190 degrees). This allows for the best flavor to be extracted from the coffee ground without that bitter taste that you get when the temperature is too low. Since most people don''t know that you don''t find that information in most reviews. I found that information in the good reviews for this product and it had an overall rating of 4.5 at the time that I purchased it but I was a bit concerned with some of the bad reviews. They pointed to things like the carafe leaking, the hot water dispenser side leaking or not functioning correctly, bad tasting water, etc. Well, I''m happy to report that I have not seen any of these problems.

Pros

1) Hot water dispenser heats water to 185 degrees. This is perfect for anything you might want to use it for.

2) The coffee maker side heats the water to about 200 degrees. This is GREAT for making a really good cup of coffee.

3) The coffee temperature allows the coffee too stay warm even after I add half & half.

4) The lid on the carafe is NOT hinged which means that it doesn''t flop around when you''re pouring and it doesn''t have a flimsy hinge to break.

5) The hot water dispenser side is HUGE, much larger than it looks in the pictures. That is why I''ve uploaded some pictures with mugs sitting on it and my tape measure showing the actual size. It fits both very wide and very tall mugs.

6) The auto-off setting is adjustable from 1-4 hours. This is great for my mom who likes to brew a pot and drink it all morning.

7) The indicator lights on the hot water side that let you know when the water is ready and when you need to add water are great.

8) Indicator light lets you know when it is time to clean the unit.

Cons

1) I''m not really sure how much safer the safety lock is on the hot water side. Anyone that can reach the lever can EASILY slide that safety lock to the left.

2) This is a small nitpick but pointing out small things like this show how much I really like this coffee maker. In order to set the clock you switch the switch to Clock and then hold down the HR button until the time starts blinking. What else am I going to do while I have the switch set to Clock? Why do I have to hold down that button too? The only reason this actually bugs me is because if you hold it down a split second too long it will begin to change the hour. So if you only wanted to change the minute it can be annoying.

3) This is only a con at first. The first time you pour water into the coffee side the angle of where you have to pour it makes you feel like you''re going to spill it. Not to worry though. The design of the carafe and the fact that the flipped up lid will catch the water if you go to far make it really easy. Just don''t hesitate and you''ll find that it is as easy as pie to pour the water in.

Finally, this thing makes a GREAT TASTING cup of coffee. I can''t believe I finally have a drip coffee maker that I enjoy using. Prior to this any time I wanted a good cup of coffee I would break out my French Press.

Feel free to let me know if you have any questions. I''ll be glad to check it out and get back to you.

This machine was to make both the coffee hound and the tea lover in our family happy in the morning. Only one of us is happy.. No complaints at all with the coffee maker..

The hot water dispenser has a strong bad taste that I cant get rid of with repeated vinegar or the 1 cup of lemon juice suggested by the customer service representative.. She had heard my story many times before..

The taste is similar to drinking out of a garden hose. The customer rep assured me that the insides are stainless steel and not plastic. I think there may be some quality control issues...

Even if I could get the bad taste out, the dispenser will only release 16 oz of water for the 32 oz you must put into it. This leaves 16 oz to sit until the next day to be reheated when you add 16 oz of new water.

You must always put in 32 oz to get out 16 oz. If you put in any amount less than 32 oz, the "add water" light will come on after only 6 oz drawn out..The machine will not let you take more than this out--even thought there is plenty more inside of it.

Consequently the new water put in always mixes with the old water that is both stale and bad tasting. Who wants day old water that has the taste diminished further by reheating?

I see this as a big design flaw that requires you to take the entire machine to the sink, pull the very ergonomically incorrect and difficult plug out of the bottom and manually drain it... The manual tells you to do this if the water has been in the dispenser a week or more...

There always will be water in the dispenser a week or more.. yuck..

I say back to the drawing board with this item..

Not what I expected from Cuisinart...

My last old Cuisinart bit the dust so I was in the market for a new one. I had also been in the market for a water kettle but really did not like the idea of having one more appliance on my counter top. When I checked out the Cuisinart web site to see what was new I was blown away by the idea of this coffee maker that also dispensed hot water!! I was so excited about it I had it sent overnight.

I have only had it for a day but oh what a wonderful cup of coffee I had this morning and right now I am loving the convenience of having hot water available for my tea drinking!

Pros: Everything!! In perfect working order and I was able to follow the manufacture''s instructions on hot water without any problems at all! Best cup of coffee I have had even counting my old Cuisinart!

Cons: Only 1 negative so far. It is awkward pouring water into the coffee maker side and I guess I will need more practice at this to keep from splashing water all over everything.

So far extremely pleased with my purchase!!

This is really a great unit. Coffee brews perfectly. As far as the water dispenser, mine works fine. It notices water levels etc. The only thing is that the water will start to smell bad (metallic) if it is left in the resevoir too long. I would say follow the instructions. It says to empty the water resevoir fully if you do not plan to run the water function for more than a week, or to store the unit. There is a drain plug on the bottom of the unit (who knew)... I drained it and refilled it, flushed a couple of times and the water is much better. No more metallic taste/smell... OK, Just an FYI...

20" Purtrex Sediment Depth Filter

20'' Purtrex Sediment Depth Filter - 5 Mic 93047I live rural and on well water. I have been using the Purtrex PX05-20 filters for over 10 years. These are excellent filters and Amazon has the best price I have found on these filters. Plus, Amason offers free shipping on these filters. I buy them by the case from Amazon and change them every 6 months.

Tap Master CFF25-10 Tap Master Jr F2 Replacement Water Filter

Tap Master CFF25-10 Tap Master Jr F2 Replacement Water Filter, Activated Alumina/GAC Fluoride Filter, White
  • Replacement filter for Tap Master Jr F2
  • Exceptional filtration: reduces Fluoride, Arsenic, and Selenium, as well as Chlorine and Chemicals
  • Feed water: PSI 20 - 100 PSI
  • Feed water Temperature: 40 Degree - 100 Degree F
  • change the filter every 3 months or 500-Gallon depending on the hardness of your water

I like to know that my water is as pure as it can get. I had this filter attached to my water line to my refrigerator to rid my water of floride, of course you need the housing too; I got that somewhere else. I believe with all my heart that our drinking water (unless you buy distilled bottled water like Le Bleu) is killing us and our pets. I also have a big blue attached to my main water line to rid all of my household water of chlorine, my water actually is quadruple filtered; I also have a carbon filter, so the water to my refrigerator is filtered 4 different times before I or my family drink/cook with it. Maybe it''s overkill but I''ll take my chances. I hope today you decide to filter your own water. Happy Drinking!!!

The Tap Master Jr has been an excellent addition to our health. The water is delicious! And I feel so much better knowing it is CLEAN. I do wish there were some sort of meter on it to know you are actually using 500 gallons and getting your money''s worth. Especially since the system itself costs $99 and the replacement filters cost $30. About to get my 4th one.

I couldn''t figure out how in the world to install this filter, but after wrestling with the Tap Master for awhile, it just came apart. There is a way to do it but it''s intuitive at least to me. The filter fit perfectly and after the first flush of charcoal, it''s working fine. I''m glad Amazon carries it!

Easy to use this to replace the older filter. Water tastes great! Doesn''t last as long filtering Chicago water, tho.

Rive Savoy Glass Water Bottle Save 3% Off

Rive Savoy Glass Water Bottle, Ikat, 16-OunceI''ve been stalking this bottle on the internet for over a year hoping the price would go down, but finally caved after seeing that the price will never drop. 25 dollars for a bottle is a bit high and I''ll be incredibly sad if I ever got a crack in the bottle.

Review on the bottle:

1. This bottle is absolutely beautiful and I''ve gotten compliments from basically everyone I know.

2. I was a little disappointed to find that the trees and birds are actually painted onto an etched glass bottle, because for some reason I thought that the design was somehow normal glass that did not get etched. I''m unsure about how easily the paint scratches off since I am extremely careful with it because I''d rather not see the paint chip off.

3. The fact that it is a glass bottle leaves my water tasting like actual water, minus the plastic and metal taste from other bottles.

4. It is a very heavy bottle when filled up. Be warned.

Review on the cap:

1. The moment I received this bottle, I performed a leak test by putting water in it and shaking it up. Water does leak out of the cap if you shake really hard because it seeps through the turning/locking function of the cap. I didn''t return the bottle, though, because who really shakes a bottle up that much. For all intents and purposes, when you flip the bottle upside down, water does not come out. Don''t walk around with the bottle on its side, though, because the sloshing of the water back and forth when walking will cause it to leak. It''s better to keep the bottle upright.

2. The design of the cap really does change the way you drink water. I no longer unattractively engulf my water like a person lost in the desert would. You can certainly try, which I have, but you kind of just get water in your nose.

3. I was really uncertain about the turn-locking function of the cap. It works, but it is also kind of difficult to work with. For one, you unscrew the cap to refill it by turning the entire cap counter clockwise. You also open the locking function of the cap to reveal the hole to drink water by turning the upper portion of the cap to the right. Many times, I end up taking the entire cap off when I try to release the hole that lets water out. It''s kind of annoying. Also, when you turn the cap back to close the hole, you might end up over-tightening your bottle thereby making the actual removal of the cap to fill up or wash the bottle very difficult. It''s a good cap, but I wish it weren''t so difficult sometimes.

4. On something completely unrelated, I know it is my own fault for flooding my backpack . . . Make sure to check that the opening on the bottle is shut before you put it in your bag. It''s less obvious since the cap is always on the bottle, and I''ve ruined a few things because of this water bottle. It might be smart to leak-proof your bag when you first get this bottle. :)

Overall, my superficiality has led me to keep this bottle. I know that there are other glass water bottles out there, but I knew that if I purchased one of the other ones, deep down I would still want this Rive bottle because of how pretty it is.

I dig this bottle. The design is my favorite out of the Savoy collection. I receive compliments on it all the time from people passing by my workspace.

Buy Rive Savoy Glass Water Bottle Now

I was so excited about this bottle for all the reasons the other reviewers have noted. When my two-year-old dropped it, I replaced it and bought three more as gifts. While my first bottle didn''t leak, the next four did. I returned those for four new bottles, of which two leaked. So my track record on this product is six out of nine that leak, which has to be a design flaw as opposed to a user error.

Sorry, but I just got this bottle and I''m sorely disappointed.

I thought that the protective cover would be all over the entire exterior, but it''s not.

Only the tiny gray piece on the very top and bottom are either rubber or plastic.

The entire rest of the bottle is just frosted glass! This means that if you dropped it the wrong way,

it would shatter in the middle!

Also, IT LEAKS!!! I thought maybe I hadn''t closed it tight enough but I tried it several different

times closing it as hard as I could and the darn thing still leaks!

Forget about throwing into a bag or something. I did that and it leaked all over some important papers.

Unless you keep it totally upright, it will leak all over everything.

For the money spent, it definitely wasn''t worth it. I''m keeping it because it''s too much of a hassle and

too much expense to send it back but I''m just gonna leave it upright in the drink compartment of my car.

That''s pretty much the only thing it''s good for. Or I guess you could use it as a decorative vase, but they shouldn''t

sell this thing as a water bottle. A water bottle in my opinion, should NOT LEAK when closed!!!

Want Rive Savoy Glass Water Bottle Discount?

I was so excited about purchasing this bottle because of its gorgeous art and sophisticated (and slim) design and the fact that it is glass and won''t leave my water tasting like its container. I just received it and tried it out, and made sure the lid was tight. Let''s just say that when the drinking spout is closed, there were no problems with leaks. However, when I opened the drinking spout and tried to take a sip, the water spilled down the front of me. I tried tightening the lid again (as other reviewers had mentioned) to no avail. I was bummed about this as I was really looking forward to having such a beautiful water bottle.

Got this to remove the chemicals from my shower water. My hair was dry, color was washing out and yellowing so fast, that I needed extra care at the hairdresser''s every month. Now my color is staying rich and vibrant and my hair is very soft. Great item. I have reversed the filter once, after about 3 weeks and plan on doing that every month or so. Installation took about 2 minutes and changing the filter is really easy!

Looks nice, seems solid. I like that it had the NSF certification. But the brochure that comes with the shower head says that it only lasts for 5,000 gallons, not 15,000 as it states above. So I am returning this and getting one that will last longer. Also the brochure says that it will only take 75% of the chlorine out, which is disappointing.

I purchased this showerhead as my old one had "fallen apart" (got to remember to clean the showerhead once in a while). Don''t need to clean this one though since it has a filter to block out all that hard, crusty stuff! This installed in a minute and replaces a $100 showerhead that I''d bought in 2005. I love a great shower and never use the cheap showerheads. Although this one was cheap (under $50), it works great! No more dry hair, skin or junk on the shower doors! I''ve even pre-purchased the replacement filter so that I have it ready to go when needed. Reccomend to everyone!

I ordered this dual filter but called the company to get the activated alumina fluoride removal filter and the .5 micron carbon block instead of the 1 micron one. It cost more than this one, but they are better quality filters. The service people were very knowledgeable and helpful. They shipped it very quickly. The instructions were sparse, and non-existent for the faucet included, but we managed to figure it out and it was an easy install. I would definitely recommend this company to friends and family.

This unit was easy to install. However after I had installed it, it began to leak from the top of both filter chambers. I ensured I had them properly tightened. Even went and purchased two new orings to see if that was the issue. It continued to leak. Now I am shopping for another unit. I do not recommend buying this unit. It was connected to the kitchen. The water source is a well.

Want Purenex US-2 Under Counter Water Filter Purifier System Discount?

I''ve been using the Purenex US-2 Under Counter Water Filter Purifier System for seven months. Frankly, it just doesn''t work. I suspect that it''s not sealing around the filter elements, allowing the water to bypass the filters. I don''t have any documentation (can''t find it on the web, either).

Normally I''d consider this to be my mistake, assuming it wasn''t installed properly. However, I''m using standard filter elements (that worked just fine with the filter in my last house). Plus, it didn''t work with the elements that were shipped with the filter.

This product didn''t work for me I couldn''t recommend it in good faith.

Austin Air Healthmate Plus Air Purifier

Austin Air Healthmate Plus Air Purifier - SandstoneI am becoming less and less thrilled with Austin Air. We have purchased over a dozen of these units for our home and for others in the past 10 years and at first, we were really happy with them. The DO clean the air and ARE good for allergies but the DO break within months of their warranty and the company is NOT helpful with getting them taken care of. Every person gives you a different story and blames the last person even when you speak to the same person 2x you get two different opinions and over the years they keep changing how they fix units and the costs. It now costs $100 parts/labor and about $60 shipping both ways to have them fix a unit. If you do this every several years PLUS need to change the filter every 2-3 years it is REALLY expensive to have these units. I''d feel differently if I felt the customer service was helpful but I was so frustrated the last time we needed to send in yet another unit and yet again the price went up and they didn''t know what to do...as someone who has sent 50+ customers their way in the past 10 years as well as I work with chemically sensitive people, I am now looking at other options.

  • Installs between shower arm and shower head.
  • Low-profile shower design extends showerhead less than 1.5 inches.

Purchased this model as well as chrome version from home depot. This model does not include shower head.

I live in L.A., a city notorious for dreadful water quality. After a recent house move my skin became super dry & itchy & developed a slight rash/hives sometimes after showering. My normally have great skin was parched & aged, my highlighted hair was dull & drained of colour. I chalked it up to moving stress until my hairdresser mentioned her clients up in the hills all complained of similar problems and recommended a shower filter.

Sprite brand was reviewed well enough, and I noticed an immediate difference; my hair felt like hair again, the fancy face moisturizers I''d bought were no longer necessary. When I wash my face in the unfiltered sink water instead of the shower I can feel a huge difference.

The bad newsSprite filters do not remove chloramine (the gross mix of chlorine & ammonia used in public drinking/bathing water), despite that, as stated, I saw a huge difference in the water quality so until I can find an alternative that removes everything, this is a great option.

I took one star off, as the unit I purchased (from home depot)was a tad hard to screw on properly, I still have some water dribbling out of the top or bottom. I expect I''ll need to replace it sooner than 6 months because of the severity of my water. I''m fine with that and the price considering how much it helped.

These filters are good quality and do a good job in my Whole House Water Filter. I used to pay almost 3 times the price at local stores for Culligan brand replacement filters. It also helps to have a good supply if you want to change your Filters more often

I was surprised that the Filters they sent were NOT iSpring Brand as described. Instead I received PURENEX Brand.

I''ve been burned a few times by vendors using BAIT AND SWITCH Tactics to sell inferior products so I was concerned.

When our apartment was renovated this last year the installation of beautiful new Moen faucets in our kitchen rendered our old and much used top-of-sink filter useless. The replacement of it with an under-the-sink version from Multi-pure was a very expensive option. We looked for another solution. As I ALWAYS do these days I checked Amazon first and found this system for about half the price of the Multi-pure. As luck would have it a friend had recently purchased one of these reverse osmosis systems and was raving bout it. The other reviews here on Amazon were largely raves as well so I ordered one.

Several of the Amazon reviewers mentioned that they had installed it easily. I can''t really speak to this as the maintenance kid in our building was happy to install it for us. He discovered and it bears mentioning that we needed an adapter in order to install it as we have a garbage disposal unit. It was easily obtainable from Amazon and was in hand whithin a couple of days. It was then a matter of about a half an hour for our maintenance person Kevin to install the system.

Our building is older and the water had tested positive for a number of contaminants including lead and of course chlorine, which we could smell. Subsequent testing showed DRAMATIC reductions in all contaminants and we no longer smell chlorine. Thanks Amazon! AND Kevin!

These are very easy to install and 1/2 the price of other name brand manufactures. Just put a towel under the unit to catch a few drops of water and twist. Put the new one on and you are set. None of the flushing of the tank and finding bleach to clean system.

Mavea Elemaris XL Water Filtration Pitcher Save 21% Off

Mavea 1001125 Elemaris XL Water Filtration Pitcher, BlackWe replaced the Brita pitcher that we have used for several years with this one. One thing that bothers me about the Brita filters is how the carbon particles keep escaping into the top compartment of the pitcher. It doesn''t hurt anything, but it looks bad to me. Mavea''s filters haven''t had that problem so far. However, their claim that you don''t have to soak the filter is not quite true: you have to run two pitchers of water through a new filter to activate it. This is even more trouble than soaking.

The self-opening and closing lid works well. You never have to remove the lid or flip it up. The only catch is that you have to stop pouring water in when it first starts to close. If you keep filling until it closes completely, water leaks out the top of the lid down the handle and interior sides of the pitcher.

We wanted a larger capacity pitcher than the 40 ounce Brita slim pitcher we were replacing. The 3.5 liter Elemaris XL size fits the bill. Be forewarned that the fully filled pitcher is quite heavy at 9 pounds. The contoured, rubberized grip makes it easier to deal with.

One thing that I really like about the ZeroWater product is the measurement device provided which shows how many parts per million (PPM) of metals, minerals and such the water you''re measuring contains. So it gives the buyer a means to determine the quality of the water measured.

I''ve now used both ZeroWater vs. Mavea and here are my thoughts about the two filtration pitchers and how they compare to one another.

Water Quality: The ZeroWater wins hands down. There''s no comparison in my mind. Here in San Diego, our tap water is quite hard and metallic. Using ZeroWater''s measuring device, our tap water measures somewhere around 440 PPM of solids.

I thoroughly cleaned both filtration pitchers per the respective manufacturer''s instructions, ran and disgarded several cycles of water and then measured the results. ZeroWater claims that I should be able to produce water that measures 000 PPM of solids. I couldn''t quite get that reading, but I did get 006. ZeroWater actually recommends that you change the filter at 006, but even at that level, the water tastes great, pretty much just like fresh rainwater.

Conversely, Mavea''s filtered water produced a reading of 349 PPM of solids. While that''s about 100 points lower than my tap water, it''s not really a major improvement, in my view. It''s not even in the ballpark of what ZeroWater can do. I can definitely taste a big difference too. To me, Mavea tastes just a bit better than unfiltered tap water where ZeroWater tastes extremely fresh and clean.

Ergonomics: Mavea is made in Germany and has a nice, European design to it. It''s definitely more pleasing to my eyes. It''s also quite a bit smaller and probably a lot easier to handle. It doesn''t have the push spout like ZeroWater does, but it''s easier to handle than ZeroWater.

Cost: The cost of these units are similar. Frankly, it appears to me that it''s cheaper to order bottled water versus using these units and purchasing replacement filters. I measured the PPM of the purified bottled water that I get from Pure Flo water of San Diego and not only was the quality the best at 001 PPM, but it was also the cheapest when the cost of the filters was factored in. I will say that Mavea''s filters are much cheaper than ZeroWater''s, but they aren''t nearly as good in my view.

Bear in mind that you can probably use these filters effectively well after the manufacturer suggests that you change them, so that potentially improves the cost factor. This is especially the case with ZeroWater. Even though I couldn''t obtain the advertised 000 PPM reading, the water''s still great at 006 and a huge improvement over my city water. I would probably not replace the filter until well after the manufacturer''s suggested interval.

Recommendations: My first recommendation is to look into the cost of bottled water delivered to your home. It''s more convenient and if the cost is cheaper, I''d go that route. However, if you have a need for a water purification pitcher, there is no question that ZeroWater provides cleaner and fresher water. Do be aware that the filtration process is relatively slow, but the ZeroWater filter is pretty massive, so it''s probably to be expected.

I like the look of Mavea and the better ergonomics, but ZeroWater is the knockout winner here. I doubt you''ll find a way to produce more pure water on your own. Mavea has its merits, but it doesn''t come close in terms of performance.

Like the other commenters I think this filter is great. It feels sturdy, the plastic is hard, but the handle gives it a good grip. It was pretty easy to put together and take apart so cleaning is a sinch. I also love the fact that you don''t need to open anything to fill it, just start pouring in the water. Our other brita pitcher''s split cap approach was so dumb compared to this. I am relieved to have received the product as advertised and all seems to be functioning without a problem.

P.S> wife said that the water tastes way better than our previous Brita and that there are no more black carbon pieces floating around everywhere.

I bought it because it is BPA free. Replaced an old, cracking Brita pitcher. It looks great, is easy to use, water tastes great (no taste at all). The pitcher is dishwasher safe which adds convenience to an already useful item. Very happy with the purchase, recommending to other family members.

Pros: BPA free, self-closing water intake, filter-replacement indicator, rubber feet preventing slips, nice modern styling

Cons: non really, except not sure how the filter sensor gets its measurements

We have had this pitcher for 18 months and use it several times per day. It holds the only water we drink or cook with in the house and we drink and cook with a LOT of water (average refill: 7 times per day, every day {unless away}). It is very durable and good looking. We have the black one and it goes very nicely with black appliances. It is easy to fill (just aim for the self-opening and closing flap) and easy to pour from. The little rubberized feet keep it steady on the countertop. The handle is perfectly balanced. We like that it is made from BPA-free plastic (glass would be even better, though).

Keep in mind that if you have hard or especially mineralized water, a "ring" of deposits will form on the top where the refill flap is. It is minor and can be prevented/cleaned (or might not be an issue, depending on minerals in your water source), but it can look icky, especially on glossy black. This is not the fault of the pitcher, though.

FILTER INFO (included because of the inherent "partnership" between the two products):

The filters are great in that I have read they are NSF-certified (yay!), remove more than a Brita or PUR, have silver-infusion to help prevent bacterial growth (we keep ours on the countertop, so this is more needed than if we kept it in the fridge), do NOT release little black carbon particles (ick!), and we''re happy they are recyclable. For further eco-savings, buy the three-pack (reduces carbon footprint of transportation in shipping); and, when they''re used up, keep a stock of spent filters, to reduce the carbon footprint of sending just one back at a time. Or, better yet, find a store in your area (walking distance is best, of course) that will take yours and send them to be recycled along with others'' filters.

Refilling the pitcher:

The top capacity is less than the bottom capacity, so if you refill until the flap "closes", the bottom will only fill to be about 2/3 full. You would need to wait until it filters that water, before adding more to the top. So most of the time, you don''t have a "full" pitcher from each refill. Unless you refill, wait, and then "top off". If you sit the pitcher in the sink and let the tap flow slowly, you can stretch the per-refill filtered amount a bit, since it begins filtering immediately. With our use, refilling pitchers to about 2/3 full, about 7 times per day, almost every day, we average about a filter per month, having bought and used 18 in the last 18 months. I do wish they came in a 6-pack, or more.

Our drinking water tasted pretty bad before this filter. It''s quite delicious now that we use this filter. No scientific tests yet (ordering a test kit soon), just a very picky palette and infamously sensitive nose. We''re not quite sure how the "meter" measures hardness, volume, and length in use, but it lasts a reasonable amount of time for us (about a month), and we can taste the difference a few days after it gets to the 25% "line", so replacing the filter seems to come at an appropriate time. Since the meter uses three factors to determine filter "usedness", your mileage may vary.

With how great this pitcher/filter combination performs for us, it''s difficult to drink tap water without it. So, I also wish they made a travel-sized version. :)

Reverse Osmosis Water Filters VS Aquasana

The trend towards health consciousness is gaining grounds among all walks of life in the country today. In their quest for a healthy lifestyle, many people have turned to supplements to help their body develop resistance to the stress and pollution prevalent not only in urban areas, but also in some rural communities. A lot of them are realizing that in order to become truly healthy, it is not enough to watch what they eat but also to take care that they drink the right kind of water.

Many water treatment technologies exists and each of them promise to turn our contaminated water into the best quality water anyone will ever want. One such technology is reverse osmosis. It is a filtration process that forces contaminated water to pass through a semi-permeable membrane. This membrane contains small holes that trap contaminants whose molecules are larger than the holes. Reverse osmosis can remove microorganisms and chemicals but in doing so, also eliminates the naturally occurring trace minerals found in water. The water becomes demineralized, which according to a World Health Organization report can pose possible health risk to humans. Our body needs those minerals in order for our internal systems to function as they should. Lack of minerals can create a possible metabolic imbalance in our system and make us vulnerable to cancers and a host of other degenerative diseases. This filtration process needs strong water pressure to work and requires regular maintenance efficiently do its job.

Cost of water per gallon typically ranges between 18 to 24 cents, making it one of the most expensive options. It also wastes as much as 3 to 5 gallons of water for every gallon it turns out, and it produces less than a gallon per hour. Multi systems may include several pre-filters, which typically last 3 to 6 months. The core filter is usually replaced once each year.

The Aquasana AQ 4000 can filter 500 gallons of water before needing a water filter replacement. That is the typical consumption of an American household. It retails for $99.99 and the replacement filter cartridge, $48.00. This brings the cost per gallon to less than ten cents. This water filter system use a multi-media block filters – carbon filtration, ion exchange and sub-micron filtration – to filter out chlorine, lead, prescription drugs, pharmaceuticals, VOCs, methyl-t-butyl ether (MTBE) and cysts (chlorine-resistant parasites such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia). A very important feature is its ability to leave the beneficial natural trace minerals in the body while eliminating the offending chemicals and substances. You get the benefit of the best tasting, healthiest and highest quality water there is. In fact, the water it produces is comparable to water from a natural spring.

Reverse osmosis is an expensive option than Aquasana. While it can effectively filter out many harmful chemicals, including trace minerals important to the body, many synthetic chemicals like herbicides and pesticides have smaller molecules that can pass through the semi-permeable membrane. This makes reverse osmosis an ineffective water filter system in removing synthetic substances in the water. The best alternative is the Aquasana AQ4000 water filter system, as it gives you the best value and convenience over all other water filter system.
