DeLonghi ECAM23210B Compact Magnifica S Beverage Center Save 39% Off

Machine worked fantastic for about 8 months until the frother would no longer work. A call to Delonghi support (Oct ''11) resulted in a seven day wait for box to ship the unit to a repair facility (Nov ''11). That facility determined within a week it needed a new frother, but Delonghi took two months and never supplied the part the repairer. After 2.5 months (Jan ''12) of waiting I again called Delonghi and asked that they just send me a replacement unit so that I didn''t have to keep waiting. Ten days later, a replacement (refirb) unit showed up only to arrive broken (this time leaking water into the grounds tray). Initial calls to Delonghi were met with scripted "you''ll need to send us the unit and wait for our evaluation..." rather than them just shipping me out a replacement immediately and my returning the defective one. Sigh. Such an excellent product when it is working. Customer service just doesn''t think a $800+ product deserves better care. Delonghi should study Apple to learn how good customer service builds a strong brand.

I spent a LOT of time looking at the different sites for expresso machines. Most suggested staying away from the super automatics. I dont doubt that you can make an even finer cup of coffee if you have full control and spend the time to do it, but for those of us that want to grab a cup in the AM before heading out the door, this machine does a really nice job. I had a manual machine once in the past but never spent the time with it, plus it took 5 mins of prep work and cleanup was drag, I ended up giving it away. Yes it made great coffee, but it ended up sitting on a shelf next to the ice cream maker (never buy one of those :-)). This is a much better device for me.

The Compact Magnifica (23210) works great out of the box. The machine comes with a coupon for a tap water filter, but they really should have included it for those that want to use tap water and live in hard water cities. If you have filtered water at your place (or use a brita etc) this will not affect you. Within a half hour you will be churning out really nice drinks. The frother works well with 1% milk. Consider grabbing this:Krups XS5020 20-Ounce Stainless-Steel Milk Frothing Pitcher. It works nicely in concert. After running perhaps 3-4 cups through the 23210, the quality of the coffee levels off and is excellent (dont panic the first cup might be weak or bitter as the beans cycle through). Assuming you buy decent coffee (I used HEBs brand), you will have relatively quick cuppuccino, easy coffee and strong and tasty expresso in a few minutes. I find the cup warmer to be useless and I did need to ramp up to the hottest setting for the coffee to be the right temp, but otherwise the 23210 was tuned perfectly with preset factory settings. Cleanup is a breeze the frother is insulated in plastic so the wand is MUCH easier to clean than the non insulated wands on many machines. The tank is plenty big enough for AT LEAST 10 drinks (even if you use some steamed milk a few times). The footprint of the unit is nice and it wont hog space.

Overall, Im quite happy with the quality and build while plasticy, it doesnt seem cheap, it has a more euro look to it than the picture indicates I feel. If you are looking for a nice automatic and you are willing to make the trade off to spend quite a bit more, and perhaps lose a bit of artisinal control, youll definitely be rewarded by purchasing this. I was worried the coffee would taste like Keurig or the other quick makers this is MATERIALLY better coffee. If you can afford it, treat yourself, this maker wont disappoint. I especially recommend for parents who have little free time and busy professionals who dont want to spend time cleaning. This is a good machine. I have no idea what MORE Id want from a machine, assuming it continues to work, I dont see why a person would need a larger machine.

Update: I''ve had it a few months now and I''ve got a routine I now use so I thought I''d share. I set the bean strength to the highest setting and the water to the middle size and I make a double shot each time. That seems to be the flavor/size balance that works best for me. The reviews that suggest using a dry, European roast like illy over an oily dark roast like Starbucks are probably correct. I''ve been using lavazza which is well priced via amazon. One thing about this machine is that it makes great coffee. Great design that will fit most kitchen areas. Just decalcified the machine for the first time, also my first and it took about 40 min.. The directions in the manual were slightly different than how the machine prompted me but I followed the machines direction and all went well. I highly recommend this type of coffee maker, because of verity of coffee making choices, ease of use, and of course taste. I drink at least 4 cups a day.

I studied different machines until I was dizzy. The only requirement: It was important to me to have a machine that loaded water from front. When you look at the dimensions, it is not much smaller than others. The product weighs a ton already, and I am happy it is not stainless.. It is reasonably as quiet as a coffee grinder could be and makes beautiful espresso consistently.. The DVD instructions are... well.. instructive.

To decide, ask yourself this question: If you were a smoker would you roll your own cigarettes, or buy a pack to smoke. That is the difference between a manual/semi automatic vs a superautomatic like this one.

You add one feature and the other and then you say do I really need all this?

Set expectations. It comes down to budget, ease of use, and space requirements.

The fact is that it was cyber Monday, I was going to buy a perfecta at a bargain price, the seller ran out, and gave me the compact which was more expensive for half the price. There is concern out there that super automatics in general break easily if you use hard water and don''t change the filter. If it works for two years for me, I will be happy. If it breaks, we will be coffee addicts and buy a semi automatic to experiment with our addictive urges.

My smart busy wife pushes one button. She is happy, the whole family is happy.

I''ve had the compact Magnifica S for about a week now and have a good sense of what the machine delivers.

Pros:

Literal push-button automation/automagical coffee. Spend 15 minutes watching the video and reading the manual and you will have complete control of the machine.

Lovely frothing. As a cappuccino lover, good foam was at the top of my wish list. I won''t be making latte art any time soon, so I can''t speak to "pourability" of the foam. But for my milk-first, then espresso builds, it is ideal.

Really compact footprint. The unit takes up half the space of my old Krups duo.

Access to moving parts. It''s very easy to get to the bean hopper, water tank, bypass chute, etc.

Cons:

General superauto price point. I love the indulgence of the machine and got it as a Gold Box deal. It will take 100s of cups before I hit my value/price happy place.

Non-oily beans. I have to step away from my beloved dark-roast Peet''s in search of non-oily beans that won''t clog up the hopper. It takes away a bit from the flavor profile I love. But I''m experimenting with medium roast beans on the strongest setting and adjusting the grind.

Bypass chute. It only accepts one serving''s worth of ground beans at a time. Just a little extra effort to make a couple of cups of evening decaf.

Overall, "Maggi" and I have a good working relationship and I''m really enjoying the quality and ease of the coffee she produces. Sometimes I miss the more manual experience, but overall, this machine gives you the ease of a Keurig-style push-button set-up, but delivers a really good cuppa.

Most importantly, my wife loves it, and she is a gadget-phobe. I just bought a second one for my mother.

We have been using it for two months now, and no problems so far.

After my usual exhaustive search, I selected this tea kettle because it had the best combination of features.

PRO:

All metal: stainless steel liner and no exposed heating element to accumulate scale buildup. The lid is plastic but it doesn''t come into contact with the water. I really didn''t like the idea of boiling water in contact with plastic.

Cool touch exterior for safety and also it insulates the water inside, keeping it hotter after the kettle shuts off upon boiling.

Nice balance for the handle I find the electric kettles with the handle on the top to be much more difficult to lift and pour. This one has the handle on the side much better.

Wide mouth top is easy to fill and clean. The lid pivots in the middle too hard to describe so I added a clip from the user manual. Easy to remove lid to clean, though as others mentioned it does get in the way a bit when you''re filling the kettle.

As with many other kettles, it is cordless -the kettle lifts easily off and on from the corded base, and you can hide any extra power cord inside the base.

CON (none of these matter to me or my wife):

No water level indication, but then if there were you would probably have connections that could leak over time and potentially plastic parts in contact with water.

Water temperature is not adjustable.

There are lots of pluses... The double insulation keeps the outside less than dangerously hot. It also means the water will heat up a tiny bit faster and stays hot a lot longer than uninsulated kettles.

The water almost never touches plastic; an important consideration to some. The underside of the lid is plastic and so is the frame around the scale filter. Still, the contact is minimal. The tall, thin design means it take up less counter space than other models.

The surprising (to me anyway) "minus" is that when you take this pot off its base the switch stays in the on position. All the other cordless electric kettles I''ve used shut off when you lift them up. The result is that the only two ways to turn this off are to remember to flip the switch or count on the kettle to turn itself off when the remaining water boils or the pot runs dry. It''s not a big deal but for the price Hamilton Beach could have included an interlock (like they do on other kettles they make).

BTW, I feel that honest, effective reviews take the place of first-hand experiences that are lacking in online shopping. Hard-To-See "Max" Water Fill Mark

The interior has a "Max" mark to indicate the maximum water level but it''s not easy to see it. Work-around: The lid is hinged in the middle, so when it is flipped open, the bottom half of extends below the rim of the kettle. It so happens that the bottom of the lid lines up with the "Max" mark, so you can use the lid as a marker for gauging when the water level reaches the mark.

I bought this kettle a month or so ago. I agree with other reviewers that it''s a well built appliance that boils quickly and doesn''t impart any taste to the water (that I can detect). I chose it because of it''s steel container, having read too much about chemicals leaching out of plastics. But it won''t pour! The darned thing must have been designed by an industrial artist to look cool, and I bet they didn''t build a prototype and check it out before launching into production. I''ve tried everything to get it to pour cleanly, but it always trickles water back down the outside of the canister and all over the counter or table top. I''ve tried removing the plastic filter, pouring quickly, slowly, etc, but nothing prevents a pool of hot water that has to be wiped up afterwards. It seems to be inherent in the shape of the lip. The only thing that minimizes(but doesn''t prevent) the problem is to open the lid and pour extremely slowly. It''s really a major irritation with an otherwise pleasing product.

Buying this filter online is THE WAY TO GO!

Apparently these replacement filters are not commonly carried in the large national hardware stores, thus your only solution was to pay a furnace contractor to make a home visit to simply replace these filters, an with their huge costs and the giant mark-up they charge, it was crazy. Plus, we have hard water so we need a new filter about twice a year.

I did an internet search and found these filters on AMAZON, and the price was 1/10th the price of a home visit from a contractor!

Looking at a number of previous reviews, I''d like to clarify a few points:

* It''s not a carpet cleaner, it''s a _spot scrubber_. Anyone purchasing a machine with a single brush who expects to clean whole sections of carpet deserves all the self-inflicted frustration they''ve expressed here. My father-in-law tried to use our scrubber to clean his entire entryway. His verdict: "The thing is worthless." My wife and I just roll our eyes.

* The spray nozzle shoots out lots of solution in a narrow, focused pattern, perfect for treating _spots_. It takes only a few pumps. The image of someone stalking around a room trying to spray anything more than about 20 inches square (again, anything more than a _spot_) is just painful.

* The thing sucks strongly enough to fill the dirty water reservoir. I suspect that some folks haven''t cracked the manual or noticed the yellow knob to switch between scrubbing and suction.

All that said, I hate to think of living without this machine. We''ve used it suck up spills and to erase the stains left by our cats and by our son with a permanent "Sharpie" marker. You can actually watch the cat puke (or worse) get sucked up. I always felt a little uncertain when attacking stains like this with a towel or sponge. How can anyone armed with a squirt bottle and a brush believe they''re doing anything more than just smearing the stain into the carpet?

I like the extra-long cord. The rotating brush may seem a little weak, but stains really do disappear under it.

What I don''t like so much is that the unit can be difficult to clean, leaving ugly stuff in the intake and waste reservoir. All the reservoirs and caps and switches can get a bit fiddly as well. And it does sound more like a jet engine than a vacuum.

The Spot Scrubber isn''t perfect (4 out of 5 stars), but it''s small, works very well for us, and has exceeded my (realistic) expectations.

(when my cat eats too fast). I don''t know how people could think this is an excellent product unless they are using it on a tan or dark colored rug (that matches the color of the original stain)! I used it on my brand new, very expensive, WHITE carpetand I can GUARANTEE you, it:

1) Does NOT do a good or complete job of getting stains up

2) Leaves A LOT of WATER ON THE RUG which will delaminate your

carpet. This is not good ask any carpet professional.

3) The machine does not rinse -it just puts soapy water down, scrubs it, then does a lousy job of vacuming up (thus leaving) whatever (now diluted) stain (cat barf)+ carpet shampoo that was originally put down on your carpet by your cat,etc. and now the machine.

4) FYI, you need to use a phillips head screwdriver [a local store]. If you want something that really takes stains out, use OXI-CLEAN. You can get it at [local stores] and lots of other places. You still have to dry the carpet by hand (like you do with the product I am returning) but at least when your''re done, the carpet is clean and sanitized!!! And there is no machine to take apart afterwards.

This little spot-scrubber is one hard-working device! I really put it to the test on some ground-in carpet stains, and was astonished to see what a great cleaning job it did. On one "tank" of hot water, I found that I could clean about four square feet of very soiled carpet -before the dirty water needed to be emptied, and the clean water container needed to be refilled. While this small carpet cleaner can''t easily clean the carpet of an entire room, it sure can clean up just about every small spill you might have!

This little vac does exactly what it''s supposed to.

Important to note:

This vac has two settings, scrub and vacuum. If you have the switch set to scrub, it''s NOT SUPPOSED to vacuum. I strongly suspect that''s why these other reviewers are having trouble with it. I had the cordless Bissell Spotlifter prior to this, and this vac does a much better job.

And if you empty the dirty water tank when you''re supposed to, you won''t have any trouble with that either.

When looking to purchase, I compared this vac to the Bissell SpotLifter (the corded one) because I was pretty happy with my old Bissell, but the Bissell is big and awkward to work. On the Bissell, you have to spray and hold the unit flat against the floor to scrub, and then you have to tilt the unit at a pretty good angle to get it to vacuum. No thanks. On the Dirt Devil, you set the switch to scrub, spray the spot and go over it a few times, set the switch to vacuum, go over a few times. Viola... No more spot and no awkward tilting to get just the right angle.

Also, another reviewer wrote in the Bissell reviews that the Dirt Devil only holds six ounces of liquid. Not so. I just measured it, and it holds nine ounces.

This is the first review I''ve ever written in my whole life, but I felt compelled to jump to the defense of this little vac. It''s getting a bad rap because people aren''t reading the instructions.

I regularly change my Water Filters. As usual I ordered ahead of change time "Pentek P-250A Under Sink Water Filter Set" on Amazon from "Water Filters Direct, LLC."

When I opened the plastic wrap to install the water filters, black activated charcoal powder poured out onto my carpet! The end cap was either damaged or was not properly sealed. It was just held by the shrik wrap.

Unfortunately I found out that the product was defective after 30 days. (Water cartridge was not due for replacement!) It looked ok from outside, as it was tightly shrink wrapped. I called Amazon customer service at 1(800) 201-7575. After a long disucssion and lots of hold time, they agreed to refund, as it was a defective part they supplied. I argued that as its a replacement cartridge I could not ascertain if it was in working order or not until installed. I could not install unless the old part was due for change. When they credited the amount I paid, they deducted shipping charges! I am not happy about it, as it was not my fault they sent a defective item.

Lesson learnednever order a consumable ahead of time, from Amazon. If it is a defective product, Amazon is going to sock you for the mailing charge, even if the product is defective.

Also I am never going to buy anything from "Water Filters Direct, LLC." as I never encountered a defective water filter in my life before this!

The instructions that come with the device tell the consumer where to run it. It doesn''t offer the warning to stay clear until the device has done its job. I would give this thing 5 stars for how effective it is, but I can only give it 4 because it doesn''t provide this warning.

I purchased this ozone generator to combat the urine/fecal/pet smells coming from our "cat room" on the second floor. There are three litter boxes and two food dishes in the room and often but not always an offensive collection of odors emanates and can even be smelled on the first floor at the bottom of the stairwell. Even with daily cleaning of the boxes, the smells persist. In the past, we used a HEPA filter which was somewhat effective however, it required routine cleaning of the filter element and once this became gunked up the odors returned. Too much hassle, not to mention it was a large contraption. I was looking for an "install it and forget it" solution.

I researched ozone generators and wasn''t quite convinced. For one, the EPA does NOT recommend using an ozone generator and claims that not only do they pose a health hazard (mostly for those with respiratory issues/asthma), but they are also ineffective at scrubbing smells. (This research can be found online check it out). Not only that, there are a ton of ozone generators on the market, and they all look the same and appear to come from China, so that''s not very confidence-inspiring, either. I took a gamble and didn''t expect much return on my $40, but my main objective was to dispel or verify claims on both sides.

The PurePlug unit itself has a small footprint it''s a little larger than a night light and plugs directly into an outlet. It includes its own version of a night light, which is the blue semi-circle in the center of the device. This feature is useless, in my opinion. It doesn''t emit enough light to be considered a night light replacement, but that''s not why I bought it. I figured it was manufacturer hype which it was.

The unit is operated by turning a knob clock-wise. You are able to control the flow of ozone by operating the knob from "off" to full blast the 6 o''clock position is "off". There is an audible sound, like a gas leak, when the device is in use. The sound increases as the knob is advanced. Because I''m not upstairs much, other than when I''m asleep in the bedroom with the door closed, the noise isn''t a bother. If you install it near a liveable area, especially a den, it might be distracting.

The ozone generator emits a very strong, distinct smell. You can almost taste it. There have been a lot of comparisons, and the "outdoorsy" characterization is accurate. I would compare it to wormy soil after a rain storm, with a chemical tinge. This may or may not bother you. I''ve lived in the country all my life, so I''m used to it. Even though this unit is only supposed to service a room between 30-100 sq. feet, the ozone odor is detectable way outside this radius. I can strongly smell it in the connecting hallway and at the door to my bedroom about 15 feet away, and even faintly at the bottom of the stairs. This is with the knob cranked to full blast. I don''t think I would want this ozone generator near a liveable area unless there was a strong odor there which needed to be eliminated (in my case, there isn''t it''s only in the cat room upstairs). Basically, the ozone smell is going to replace whatever you''re trying to get rid of. If you can''t take it, that might not be a good thing.

This brings me to the most important rating factor does the unit eliminate offensive odors? In my experience, yes, it does. I run the unit about 12 hours a day on the full setting. As mentioned, the cat smells are gone, replaced with the ozone odor. They have not been "covered up", like spraying an air freshener as a masking agent. The room smells cleaner/fresher and I don''t feel as gross being in there. In fact, I hung a heavy bag in the doorway and work out in the room now. I turn off the ozone generator an hour or two in advance so that it airs out. Keep in mind that the unit is not going to eliminate smells as they occur. When one of the cats poops, I can immediately detect it but, instead of the odor fanning throughout the house, it''s now contained and subdued quickly. This is why I purchased the device and it''s performing as I''d hoped.

I will update this review in the future regarding: a) any ill health effects experienced from inhaling ozone, b) how long one should run the device for it to clean a 100 sq. foot room by experimenting with different durations (as noted, it''s currently on 12 hours a day), and c) the longevity of the unit itself.

First, Ozone isn''t overpowering once it kills/neutralizes all the embedded pollutants in your home. Mostly what people are smelling is an all out war between ozone and it''s adversaries. Keep in mind that this can take weeks, even months with such a little unit. However, once it''s cleaned up your home, it will smell more like the air after it rains out..... and who hates that?

It says good for up to 50 sq. ft. That''s non-sense, this thing is a POWERHOUSE. I got this unit cause I''m a smoker and wanted it to keep the clothes in my walk in closet fresh smelling. I thought I''d test it out on high when I first got it..... Put it between the kitchen and my living room in an open concept design with Cathedral ceilings. Well, let me tell you, within hours, seemingly the whole house smelled like ozone! I wasn''t crazy about the smell initially but it let me know the areas it was effective in and once cleaned up, the smell was fresh and not overpowering. I ended up buying 3 of these and strategically placed, worked wonders on my whole 1300 sq. ft. apt.

One caveat, this thing will perform much better with air circulation. Near a return vent or close to a larger room air purifier is ideal. That''s were this baby really shines. I couldn''t imagine using this on low in a small room with no air movement. For that matter, if it were on high in a larger sized bedroom, you''d have have to admit defeat and leave the room!! The internal tank has an independent thermostat and heating element. Once the unit is heated up, It will operate once (3-4 mins)/1.52 Hours.

During this hearing stage, the machine will use around 1500 Watts of power.

The independently switch hotplate draws about 50Watts.

Keep in mind, the BUNN has no water pump, so once it starts to brew, the water is gravity fed into the pot.

We are energy conscious, and have placed the BUNN on an appliance timer; turning in on at 4am, and off at 8pm.

Heat up from cold water takes about 20 minutes.

When our unit heats up, after being off for 8 hours, it only takes 5-10 minutes to get up to temperature.

I can''t really comment on the quality of the coffee this machine makes as someone I know purchased this thing for their home. But they made a trial batch and it seemed to be very good. The instructions are mildly confusing as there is no off switch. The way this machine works is that you leave it *unplugged* the first time you fill it. You fill it with 2 & 1/2 carafes of cold water. 1/2 will "spill" out as per the instructions. *Then* you plug it in. When you''re ready to make coffee setup your grounds, filter and whatnot. Then pour a carafe of cold water into the top. Put your empty carafe on the warmer plate really fast and water will flow out almost immediately, the coffee is done in a couple of minutes, it''s really fast.

The reason there is no ON or OFF switch because the "initial" reservoir is kept warm in the machine at all times and the machine just sits there 24/7 happily keeping the reservoir water warm until you''re ready to use it. When you put a fresh carafe of cold water in the unit the cold water is mixed with the rest of the water in the tank. As the tank can only "store" 2 carafes of water the coffee maker is "activated" (when it senses that the water temp has dropped or displaced or something,) the water is then re-heated to the proper temperature and it just makes coffee. The cold water is the switch (to make coffee.) I have no idea if you can make less than 1 carafe of coffee.

The warmer plate switch (red switch) does not need to be on to make coffee as it seems to work independently of the coffee making part. ie) It''s just a switch for the warming plate. That''s all it does.

I purchased a bigger model for the office, and made the mistake of ordering the Plastic/metal pots for that product. They are hard to clean though hard to break. With this product for home I purchased glass pots. I would recommend the glass pots for this product. They are well made of treated glass and made in Germany. If you break them, it''s easy to order another. They are much easier to clean and safe to put in the dishwasher. I Got two pots for insurance.

Hard water...no problem, the maker comes with a root rooter device to ream out the stainless steel tubing.

After reading the only other review which was negative, I was worried about the coffee maker I''d just bought. However, it has worked perfectly every day for the last 3 weeks. It is remarkably inexpensive for a programmable maker. It smells so good to walk in the kitchen and hear the coffee finishing up each morning. I''ve never had a coffee make that did not require a little care to be sure the filter was not crooked but this one is actually easier than my last one which I gave my daughter.

It is very hard to choose a coffee maker that you will be happy with, and produces good tasting coffee. Here is my two cents on the Mr. Coffee DWX23 coffee maker.

Easy to read blue LED clock and blue LED power indicator.

Easy to set the time and program.

Brews 10 cups in about 12 minutes.

Water temperature going into the grounds is around 192 degrees, which is better than most coffee makers out there.

Easy to read water reservoir.

Decanter does not drip or dribble (at least mine did not).

The warming plate is non-stick and keeps the brewed coffee hot (around 180 degrees) for 2 hours.

The real only complaint I can think of is when you leave the lid closed after brewing, and you go to make another pot of coffee in the morning, once you open the lid, not all of the water will end up in the reservoir. Some will dribble down the back of the coffee maker. I have seen this design flaw in most coffee makers out there, and is usually a make or break decision with me.

The best selling point I can make about this coffee maker, is the water temperature. After a year in service, the water temperature is still a constant 192 degrees. Most commercial and industrial coffee makers will push water out at 200 degrees, so this is a very close competitor as far as the flavor of the coffee being brewed. I am very picky about coffee flavor, so this coffee maker does a great job for flavor and warmth.

Cleaning is a cinch. Just run 1/4 cup of white vinagar to 12 cups of cold water, followed by 3 more 12 cup brews of cold water once a month and you are in for great tasting coffee with the Mr. Coffee DWX23 coffee maker.

I have this coffeemaker in black. My husband bought us a single serve coffee maker but I found myself wishing I had a regular coffeemaker that just did the basics and made coffee!

This fits the bill with a few extras. The price is definitely right (I paid $27). The feature that I use daily is setting the maker to brew my coffee before I get downstairs in the morning. Nothing quite like smelling coffee upon awakening!

The flaws are few, considering the price. I wish that there was a way to override or extend the automatic shut-off. It shuts off after 2 hours, which is rarely enough time to finish the 10 cups I''ve brewed. The unit also drips a large amount of water onto the heating plate when the grinds basket is removed from the machine (after brewing). Since the grinds are typically removed when the machine is off this is not really a big deal.

Overall, it makes a decent cup of coffee with minimal hassle.

This coffee maker is great because it has two features I really need. Programmable and turns off after 2 hours. I am tired of my coffee maker burning because we forget it on and it stays on for over 10 hours. Now I can rest assured it will turn off after a little while.

I personally haven''t seen the effects of "better feeling of health" reviews that others have experienced. I think my family has a history of high blood pressure, and being in my late 20s, I have experienced high blood pressure. Anyone that has looked very long knows that this is the best passive water filter around. I looked everywhere for this item. This is the best price/deal around. Descriptions claims its for use in ALL, not MOST #4 Cone filtered coffee makers. Not so. Doesn''t fit my Gevalia coffee maker -I can''t even close the lid. Not worth paying to return it, so I guess I''ll cut the top ring and handle off and make it fit or throw it out.

I''ve been using this filter for about two weeks now. It is my first permanent filter, and I am very happy with its performance. It is solidly built, and with proper care should last quite a while. I debated on the high-end swiss gold filter, but thought the price was too high, so I figured I''d take a chance with this one with free shipping. I can''t imagine how much better/different the swiss gold would be if any? I am using a fairly fine ground from a good, flat burr grinder, and have had no issues of grounds/sludge in my coffee. I also purchased a new Zojirushi coffee maker at the same time, so read my review on that as well if you''re in the market for a good machine. This filter fits the Zoji perfectly.

I bought the Medelco #4 cone permanent coffee filter as a substitute for a Braun UGSF4 filter. Unfortunately, it''s not a really good substitute. Although the Medelco coffee filter will fit in a Braun coffee maker, it''s not as tall and tapered as the Braun UGSF4. As a result, it doesn''t concentrate the coffee as much when it is moving through the filter so you have to substantially increase the amount of ground coffee that you are using for the same strength of coffee. So while the Medelco is initially cheaper than the corresponding Braun filter, one would end up spending much more money in the long run because you would use more ground coffee. My advice is to search the net (including e-bay) to find a genuine Braun gold filter...even though it will likely be more expensive than the Medelco filter, you''ll be much happier in the long run.

I purchased this because, after about 8 months or so, I started noticing tiny holes/tears forming in the bottom of the permanent filter that came from the factory with my Braun coffee maker. It seemed to allow some of the smaller coffee grounds to come through during brewing. This product partially solved the problem. However, a more general issue with these permanent filters is that, even when they are intact, they do not filter as many particulates from the coffee as a paper filter. If you grind your own beans as I do, and your grind is on the finer side, a certain amount of ''residue'' is going to come through these filters that would be stopped by a paper filter. Just keep that in mind, and don''t drink those last few drops!

A couple of years ago, I received a French Press Coffee maker as a present, and it made coffee that was clearly superior to coffee made in the drip coffee maker. One morning I looked more closely at the coffee in the French Press and noticed oils on the surface and realized that the "moist" look on the beans was possibly oils. When making coffee in the French press, it had no paper filter, and I deduced that this was because there was no paper filter to absorb the oils. This could be remedied in my drip maker with a permanent mesh filter. I went through a couple of these before I finally bought this one, which fits my Zojirushi coffee maker. The quality of my coffee improved as the oils found their way through the filtering. I recommend this filter for all you picky coffee drinkers.
