I have an Emerson console-type humidifier that is allegedly capable of putting 13 gallons of water into the air in a 24-hour period. It came with filters from the factory that seem to stand up to this claim. The factory filters are pleated paper, not these fibrous, spongy type that are commonly described as "OEM" replacements.

These honeycomb, fibrous filters work well for a couple of days and then start to lose their ability to draw water up into themselves. Within two weeks they are hard as a rock and no longer wick. This is my second season with these things. I go through an entire case of them (8 sets of 4) in 3 months. The original-style filters, while more expensive, would last me almost 2 months and put much more water into the air (10 gallons a day on the ''medium'' fan setting).

It is now difficult to find the pleated, accordian type filters but they are the only ones that work. My advice is to try to find the originals.

These filters I believe are improved over whatever ones I bought last year. The box says they''ll repel bacteria and that''s a real plus in a humidifier.

Well...the filters are gone again; can''t find them anywhere. So why do they still sell the pitchers!? If you are thinking of purchasing one of these pitchers DON''T! You won''t be able to get the filters when you need them.

I bought this unit (3 actually) on sale so that I would stop buying the 24 packs of bottled water. I felt that it is wasteful, bad for the environment and expensive to drink bottled water. My water at home does not taste bad and I''ve been drinking it for decades, but I do like the comforting thought of having my water purified just in case. For about the cost of 3 cases of water (about 3 weeks supply), I bought this purification system. The filters for the pitchers are not easily found so I stocked up by buying replacement filters @ Amazon as they seem to have the best price. I''d hate to not be able to get filters. Although I''ve had the reverse happen as I have two packages of PUR filters and no pitchers to use with them as those filters are now obsolete and none of the current PUR filtering pitchers or devices accept these older filters. This is why I bought more than one of these water purification filtering pitcher systems. At the price I paid, I should have bought more, but they are bulky and I didn''t want to store any more than I have.

The instructions say to replace the filters about once a month, but there is a warning light in the purification device that will light up when they recommend that you replace the filter. PUR also recommends monthly filter replacement but I suspect this is more for their income cash flow rather than our safety concerns. I plan on replacing my filters every two-three months so that I can reduce my cost of filtered water by 50%. I''ve used wilderness water filters on truly horrific water (water the color of root beer, cow patties soaking in the still water, live mosquito larva and tons of mud and other particulate matter in the water) and what I do after I''m back home is to sterilize the filter by either boiling the filter core or drying out the filter and microwaving the filter to kill any active microbes. If you are an informed cheapskate like me, you can really reduce your cost/liter of water this way. I haven''t sterilized a filter for this system yet as I''ve only had this pitcher for a few weeks, but when it''s time, this is what I''ll do.

None of the manufacturers tell us why we need to replace our filters monthly, but if it is to get rid of the build up of live microbes, then sterilizing the filter will do the job. With my wilderness filters, I only replace them when the filter gets clogged up and it is difficult to get the water to pass through the filter.

I''ll be the first to admit that I am skeptical about how effective any of these filtering/purification systems are. Why? Because with my wilderness water filters require a lot of pumping pressure to get the water to pass through the filters and these home systems, the filters only require gravity and the water passes through the filter rather quickly and the home filters have relatively low mass/weight compared to the best wilderness filters. But, they probably will do no harm and the carbon element of the filter will certainly improve the taste.

I''ve had no problems with the lid falling off when pouring water from the pitcher, but I can see this occurring if you are trying to pour out the very last drops of water from the pitcher where the lid is tilted beyond vertical, but my instincts tell me to put my finger on the lid if I go beyond vertical anyway. It''s simply common sense. I''ll agree that they could have engineered the lid better so that it wouldn''t be able to fall off while pouring, but to me, I wouldn''t even call it an annoyance. I probably wouldn''t even think about it if it hadn''t been notated in previous reviews. The system is very well made and well engineered including the electronic UV purification system with it''s retractable cord, purify/fill switch, filter replacement warning light, filter body design, etc.

At the original retail price of over 110 bucks... no way I''d buy this system as I''d probably go with a under the sink reverse osmosis system, but at the current discounted prices of about a fourth that, I think they are a very good value and probably one of the best pitcher type models available.

We have a private well with possible seasonal issues. I had done much research on disinfection equipment for private wells and was considering options that ranged from a "pure" drinking water station to whole house chlorine disinfection. We had settled on the "do nothing" option until I saw this new product. Wow. I can not believe the traditional filter pitcher companies had not come up with this; a UV light in the pitcher to provide disinfection of bacteria. This is a great solution. While not the same removal of bacteria that a microbiological filter can provide, for the cost it is great peace of mind at a very cost effective price.

I have been using this system for almost a year. Sometimes there are a few carbon particles in the water, but it doesn''t really bother me. I checked on all kinds of similar water filtration systems, and this is the one I picked. This is the one I really use daily. I had tried a popular brand in the past (pitcher type), but I really didn''t think it did the job and I quickly lost interest in using it. Now, I live in an area of California that had a lot of farming at one time and the area definately had a problem with chemical well contamination, due to pesticides (not to mention the water tasted horrible and still does). This system greatly improves the taste of the water and I believe it is doing a good job filtering my water.

Originally, I was going to purchase a self-contained water filtration system at three times the cost as it implied it even filtered swamp water to acceptible drinking levels. However, I researched the products and chose this one instead. It does the job as far as I''m concerned and it sure beats the cost of high priced bottled water!

I got this unit on sale, and love it. There are some minor drawbacks, though: As one reviewer stated, some carbon particles do float into the water (though only into the pre-filter reservoir in my experience, not into the actual drinking water). Also, this reservoir only holds 4 cups of water, so you have to fill it up in stages; however, if the reservoir were larger, the unit would be larger as well (obviously), and I find it is just compact enough to fit easily into my fridge, under my cabinets, into the sink, etc. My main grip is that the lid does not snap on, so you have to hold it down with your thumb whenever you tilt the pitcher to pour. Overall, though, I think it is terrific.

I have been using super-automatic espresso machines since 2001. This is my 6th machine and by far my favorite. Having owned one Capresso C1500, three Jura-Capressos, one Saeco and now the Gaggia Academia, I''ve found this machine to outperform the rest by far. I loved the quality of the Capresso and Jura-Capresso machines, but having to send them in once a year for service at a cost of over $300 was excessive. There is no way to service the inside of these machines. Plus, I could never get the milk hot enough with the built-in frothing system on the S9 One-Touch or the Z5 and these machines lacked an external frothing wand so it was impossible to heat the milk any hotter than it came out of the machine. Next I purchased Saeco Primea Touch Plus and that was a complete mistake. The milk system is internal and constantly clogged and refused to function. This machine was returned shortly after purchase. I began looking for a machine that was as well-constructed as the Jura-Capresso, but had the ease of maintenance like the Saeco. I learned that Philips had recently purchased the Saeco/Gaggia company, so I decided to take a chance on a Gaggia machine after seeing a demo in-store.

What I Like:

The machine is fully adjustable by coffee strength, milk amount, water amount, etc. You can even adjust these settings on the fly via the color screen.

The machine is bomb-proof. Another reviewer noted that there is still a lot of plastic and yes this is true (although much less so than in Jura machines), but the machine is all metal where it counts. In the in-store demo, the demonstrator lifted the machine by its hinges to show how well it is constructed. This machine will undoubtedly hold up to years of use.

The machine has a "sealed" bean container that keeps the beans fresher that other brands of super-automatics that lack this feature.

The automatic frothing container could not be any easier to use. You snap it in a press a button. It automatically cleans itself after use and any leftover milk can be left in the container and refrigerated for next use eliminating waste.

Machine rinses itself before and after every use, so there is no "old" coffee taste when you brew your next cup.

The quality of coffee is amazing! This machine produces coffee very close the the Pasquini semi-automatic at my office. The quality is much better than my Jura machines.

The Mavea water filter removes the chlorine taste from tap water and lessens the amount of maintenance you must perform on the machine.

The adjustable coffee "spout". One of my biggest complaints with the Jura machines is that you aren''t able to fit a proper sized cup under the automatic spout. You''re limited to cups about 4" in height. Because of the nearly infinite adjustments available on this machine, my 16 oz to-go mug fits no problem.

The built-in frothing wand. Most of the milk that comes out of super-automatic machines is not hot enough if the latte or cappuccino is not going to be consumed immediately. This is not a problem with this machine. If the milk is not hot enough simply activate the built in steaming wand and heat it up a few more degrees. This is one of the few fully automatic machines that has this feature.

The ease of maintenance my favorite feature by FAR. The brew-group is removable. Simply remove it from the machine and rinse it out. No expensive trips back to the manufacturer for cleaning.

What I don''t:

The price. This machine is very expensive. If you have couple-of-times-a-day trip to S''bux like I did, then the machine will pay for itself in about a year. However, it still in the same ball park as a lot of nice used cars.

The pickiness with coffee beans. With super-automatics you can not use beans that are oily AT ALL. This limits my bean choice and I am unable to use the beans of some of my favorite artisan coffee roasters.

The frequency of emptying the internal and external drip trays as well as spent coffee pucks. The machine has two trays and an internal coffee grounds drawer and they have to be emptied at least every other day or about after every five coffees. The Jura-Capressos had very large drip trays and dump bins that only had to be emptied about once a week. This can be annoying if you''re in a hurry in the morning and the machine flashes this message before you can brew a coffee.

The small water tank. This tank is very well designed, but it must be refilled after about 6 coffees. My Jura machines would brew about 20.

My complaints are very few and after using this machine for over 6 months, I couldn''t be happier. Even with the high price, I believe I got exactly what I paid for a well-built machine that easily brews quality coffee and coffee drinks with ease of use and little maintenance. I would highly recommend this machine to anyone l who loves coffee, but doesn''t want to grind, tamp, brew espresso, and froth milk manually. Within 30 seconds, you can have a coffee drink that rivals that of all but the best baristas.

I just purchased this machine from Amazon and have been incredibly impressed with the build quality, features, and quality of the coffee produced. You can''t beat this machine in terms of the product design, multitudes of modes of operation, and elimination of cleaning chores often associated with fully automatic home machines.

Unboxing the product is your first clue to the level of detail the manufacturer paid to the product experience. As is custom with Gaggia products, this machine was designed and built at the Milan factory -something that will not escape you from the early moments of opening the box. Once the shipping box is opened, you simply remove the outer box to reveal the inside box, which has two convenient long handles to make it easy for you to lift the machine out of the shipping box. Inside, the sealed inner box contains your unit, with prominent serial number markings on the inner box and the "Made in Milan, Italy" (naturally in Italian) stamped proudly.

You''ll be surprised with the highly durable construction, in particular, the stainless steel finish which seems to be impervious to finger prints in my usage so far -and the high quality hinges that reveal the inner workings of the machine: the brew group, drip tray, and grounds drawer. One unique feature of this machine is that the brew group is fully removable for easy maintenance and cleaning. Given that o-rings over time will break down and are a common service issue on home machines from other manufacturers, the ability to self maintain in your kitchen without needing to pull the machine out or remove it to another location is a plus. Maintenance kits for the o-rings can be found for as little as $9.99.

The manuals are well written and the menu system is intuitive and easy to use. Brew strength can be varied with a simple dial on the front of the machine, and individual settings for each beverage, including coffee quantity, volume, temperature, and milk froth settings, if applicable, can be specified. There''s also a coffee chute for pre-ground coffee should you chose to use some for a particular beverage instead of the beans. This gets to the main strength of this machine: it''s completely configurable. Many people gravitate to manual machines due to the lack of control over the Espresso pull; this machine not only lets you program it, you can change it easily before every cup without needing to descend into tons of on-screen menus.

The milk carafe is a fabulous feature -and it''s zero mess. You simply pop it in, move the arm over the cup, and select the beverage you want. When you''re done making milk beverages, you return the arm to the middle position which activates a steam rinse feature that flushes the milk circuit with steam for cleanliness. Simply remove the carafe to the fridge for safe keeping until your next cleaning!

Another feature of the adjustable brew center is that it can be removed for exceptionally tall cups. Nice for those tall cups in the morning on the way to work!

Since energy consumption is on everybody''s mind these days, the unit features a double boiler (one for the brew group, and one for the milk circuit.) There''s an optional ECO mode which will automatically power down the milk circuit when not in use -simply call-up the machine''s settings to activate the feature. Furthermore, the unit features an adjustable auto-standby feature which will put the unit into standby mode drawing less than a watt of power.

I couldn''t be happier with my unit. The coffee taste, strength, and temperature are perfect. The adjustments are virtually unlimited and you can achieve precisely the results you want consistently. A great appliance for any coffee lover''s kitchen!

First of all, I must say I was VERY skeptical about paying this high of an amount of money for a machine. Secondly, I spent a week reading reviews and going back and forth between this Academia and the Delonghi Gran Dama ESAM6600. I won''t go into details of the Delonghi, but I will say that a friend of mine has it and I spent nearly 2 weeks drinking coffee with her here and there and I have to say that I am glad I bought the Gaggia, it makes a way better cup of coffee and has a WAY better milk frothing system than the Delonghi. I can''t comment on the maintenance comparissons since I dont own the Delonghi...

The Gaggia Academia

The Pros;

Very simple and straightforward to use. Comes pre-programmed (to MEDIUM everything) so all you do is hit a button. You can easily change each coffee type settings in the nice lcd screen and adjust temperature, density, water amount, etc..

Milk container for frothing is super convenient, easy to use and stays sealed in the fridge to prevent spoiling. It also is far beyond the Gran Adamas, my friend actually doesnt use the Delonghi container because it sucks :)

I have used starbucks and whole foods premium organic beans and I have no problems with either. My favorite so far is Starbucks Italian Dark Roast. The coffee this beauty makes is amazing, the cappuccinos are very good and the brewing process is not too loud.

Machine turns on, rinses, primes and warms up FASTER than the Gran Adama and even my other friends Miele Built in cabinet(+$5000 machine) unit.

Very flexible brewing options, once you understand what it does, it becomes your new best friend for coffee lovers like me!

Maintenance elements are VERY basic. You have to empty the drip tray, grounds bin, prebrew tray and ocassionally shake off the brew-group (plastic mechanism inside)

Machine is very well built, on the heavy side, sexy stainless and looks like the money it''s worth

The Cons;

There isn''t many cons but here a few VERY minor things I personally would like different:

Coffee cup size = I am an IT guy and I have learned to drink coffee in GIGANTIC cups. This machine does have a "LONG COFFEE" button, but it will make an almost full regular cup of coffee (less than the 11oz size) and the regular coffee setting makes about half that. So if you plan on making TONS of LARGE coffee mugs, this machine is probably not going to work for you.

Temperature = I did see some people complain about this. First, the machine is shipped with all the temps set to medium, so you have to set it to high. If you''re like my dad and you like scalding hot coffee, this machine can do it fine for as long as you dont add creamer or make capuccinos. I personally like warm/hot coffee and sometimes i will feel that it is not as hot as I would like it to be after adding a generous amount of cold creamer. The cappuccinos come out just fine but cool quickly so dont expect it to be super hot after a little while.

Maintenance = Eventhough it is very simple to maintain the machine, the fluids containers are somewhat small. I make about 10 coffees per day and I have to empty the thing on a daily basis. It doesn''t bother me personally, but I do consider it a con for those who lack the will to do this frequently because the machine will stop you from making coffee if it gets full so I can see some impatient people get cranky.

Bypass Chute = This is where you would put already ground coffee in example like when you need to brew a cup of decaf for someone and dont want to empty your beans. The bypass is VERY sensitive to the AMOUNT of ground coffee you dump in there. If you get it wrong, it will simply dump out the grounds into the bin and not brew anything and tell you something about pressure problems... Depending on the grind density, i suggest LESS than the scoop provided with the machine

Overall, this thing is worth every penny. Make sure to not use tap water, set all the drink temps to HIGH/MAX and play around with each coffee button until you dial in the right amount of water, coffee and temperature. For espresso, I truly recommend Starbucks Dark Espresso Roast. For espresso and frequent regular coffee (my choice) I recommend Starbucks Dark Italian Roast. Don''t be afraid, buy this over the Delonghi, I promise it is better. You will enjoy every cup and since only coffee nuts like me will pay nearly $3000 grand for a coffee maker, I bet you will run to the machine every moring when you wake up, just for another great cup of coffee... Also, if you hate manuals like me, I suggest you go on youtube and find videos, it was the best 10 minute crash course I took and it enabled me to handle the machine from the first time. Do keep the manual since it will occassionally display icons you won''t understand and you can reference them in the manual. For me, almost 1 month so far and over 100 brews made (machine has a built in counter) and i am truly happy...

I have had this machine almost 3 months now, and it has gotten twice daily use (some days 3-4) since then. I think it''s likely the best super-auto out there. My complaints are the same as other reviewers:

* The milk doesn''t get quite hot enough using the automatic steaming/frothing carafe. I find if I use hot water (from the machine) and warm my cup for at least a couple minutes before making my drink, it does help the drink stay warmer longer. I purchased this from another website, and their sales guy recommended heating the milk slightly (to take the chill off) before making the drink, but I just don''t have the patience to do that.

* I have to empty the internal drip tray at least once a day, sometimes more. The machine''s auto-rinse features when it starts up and goes to sleep fills this container easily. It would have been nice to have a larger drip tray for this purpose.

One feature I wish I had is the ability to make a drink on the fly, using the cappuccino setting, without changing my programming. There are days I want my caps a little drier, but if I go through the on-the-fly programming option, it changes my drink to default to the new settings. I would like to be able to brew my coffee and froth the milk using the auto settings without it affecting any programming. I haven''t seen that this is possible in the manual, though I suppose it''s possible I''m missing that option.

Things I love:

* I can froth my own milk! I don''t often want to, but sometimes I do get a wild hair and want to practice making the perfect froth. Most super-autos don''t have a separate frothing wand, I love that this has that option.

* It''s so very adjustable, from the amount of coffee ground to the length of the pull to the amount of milk and temperature of both the shot and the milk.

* The milk carafe makes a great foam better than I can do myself! Most auto-frothing devices I''ve tried in the past give me a lot of bubbles and not much of the good micro-foam. This does a pretty great job.

* The carafe is pretty easy to clean. I don''t take mine all the way apart, but when I need to clean it well (every 2 days, I''d say), I just put some water and dish soap in there, shake it around, scrub gently and then run clear water through the ''straw'' and upper portion. It cleans out well without fussing with it much.

* Unlike another reviewer, I do find the machine pretty sturdy in both appearance and feel. It doesn''t feel plastic-y to me at all, and it''s very easy to keep looking clean and shiny.

All in all, I''m really pleased with my purchase. When you spend this kind of money for a piece of equipment you hope for the best, but I was still skeptical it would be all I wanted. But it is! I love it and I have no regrets. Here''s hoping it lasts for years to come.

The machine is built like a tank and made excellent espresso, coffee, cappuccinos, lattes, etc. Even though we paid a lot of money for this we were satisfied due to the quality of the product, until....the machine stopped working 29 days after it was purchased, looks like the thermostat went bad and the machine would just freeze trying to heat up and then give an error code telling you to restart it.

Luckily Amazon (as usual) is working with me to ensure I am a satisfied customer, however it is still pretty disappointing to have to deal with a broken machine that costs this much money, specially this quick. Maybe I just got unlucky, when we called Gaggia support they were surprised to hear of the issue we were having.

I give it 3 stars due to having a great experience with the unit while it worked...

I have been using this instrument for 4 years and found that for the most part it works okay, however at times it has been known to suddenly stop working (it doesn''t give a reading above 1 and/or has a strange flashing symbol in place of a number) for no apparent reason. In 4 years I''ve sent 2 units back to the manufacturer who sent replacements, but did not explain what was wrong or how to avoid future problems. I take good care of the instrument cleaning, calibrating and storing correctly. The unit stopped working again a couple of weeks ago and I have to assume it needs a new electrode, even though there was no ''RENEW'' signal (I''ve never actually seen the symbol the whole time I''ve used the meter). I do find I''m left guessing about what to do to make the meter work again if it packs up! Something else that bothers the heck out of me is that the electrode needs to be replaced fairly often (every 6 months using it on average 2 to 4 times per week) and $39+ each time hurts (and forget the refillable model too never worked again after it needed refilling).

The ExStik pH100 does not work. If I had the time, I''d make a video review to go along with these words. Even after calibration, using ExTech''s own solutions, the pH100 fails to read pH levels anywhere near-accurate. It randomly reports its ''findings'', even when using the same sample being tested. The fault may be with the included pH electrode (and sealed solution), which you have no way of knowing the condition or age of, because it''s not packaged separately or appropriately for sensitive electronics. For the cost of this item, you''d expect some level of quality. Look elsewhere, because this product will disappoint both you and your wallet. But, if you still want to buy this piece of junk, I''ll mail you mine for just the cost of shipping. You''ll still be getting ripped off, but you won''t feel so bad as purchasing at full price.

The unit is accurate and works as advertised. Minor detail they DON''T mention. You really want to calibrate it for the most accurate readings. To do this you need PH 4 and PH 7 solutions which are NOT included. Luckily I have a friend in the chem business so I got some free. Otherwise you are stuck having to buy a bottle of each. The unit does work out of the box, comes with batteries (little watch style, so will be $$ to replace down the road, but hey the do give you batteries to start with) and does a decent job even without calibration.

I bought this for our business. Usually when inspector comes, he complains of the old PH meter that we used and it had to be calibrated manually. So, he thought that it wasn''t accurate and we were trying to cheat on him. Honestly, many of our staffs/chefs don''t know how to adjust up to the point. This helps so much and it automatically adjust and calibrate to the most common PH 7 and PH4 (depending on the buffer solution). I strongly suggest to purchase this. The downside is the cost which is pretty much close to $90 and the not renewable part. The other model can renew the part but that model is more expensive than this. So, over all, it''s excellent and 4 stars item.

Bodum Ceylon 51-Ounce Ice Tea Maker with Filter

This pitcher does what it says, but after using it for a few months I have to wonder if this pitcher is special enough to warrant the price. The ''pull in-pull out'' compartment that holds tea bags or lemons is nice. But the plastic is so thin after a few uses it starts to warp out of shape. If youre not supposed to pour hot water in the pitcher, what is the point of using it? I really like the slim-ness of the pitcher overall (fits in the fridge well), and I don''t mind its small capacity, but its overall fragile build leaves me wishing the manufacturers would have just created something more sturdy. I''d say someone is better off just brewing tea in a regular tupperware pitcher for half the price.

i bought this teamaker because i interpreted the description to mean that it somehow brewed iced tea more easily than the usual boil-the-water-cool-it-off method. i found that the overnight in cold water method recommended makes really uninteresting tea. i started using the traditional boiling water method.

since i bought this two years ago, i have had none of the problems more recent users have mentioned. the plastic on my model seems quite sturdy, so i suspect even bodum has succumbed to cheap manufacturing in the interim.

as a convenient pitcher to cool and store iced tea in, its nice. and removing the tea leaves after brewing is simple with the insert--no need to juggle two containers and a seive. but it certainly isn''t a clever, easier way to make iced tea.

This is probably decent for a light tea drinker, but given the amount of tea I drink on a daily basis (8-10 cups per day), it just did not work for me. It''s quite a bit more expensive (when I bought it 3 years ago it was $59.99 now its $99.95) but I''ve used this thing every day since, and all it needs to stay looking new is a good cleaning from time to time. Seven years ago our main sewer line started backing up into the house. I rented a plumber''s snake and routed the line. When I removed the snake, the cutting blade was filled with small tree roots. After researching "root killer systems" I tried Roebic. I have been using it once a year since with no recurrent sewerline problems. It works wonderfully. As has been stated elsewhere, the product tends to clump in the package over time (I buy mine a year in advance). Don''t try to empty this clumped product directly from the package into the toilet or it can overflow. I dump it into an old coffee can or pail and use an old fashioned mashed potato masher to break up the clumps and then dump it into the toilet from the larger container. Also, do not stand there and watch it work or you will watch it overflow. Flush immediately after pouring the entire contents into the toilet. Wait a few seconds after toilet refills and then flush again. Try to do this at night before bed time or before you go out for the day to let the product work as undesturbed as possible for several hours.

Great concept, but this little guy is noisy. When it "inhales" it makes a distinctive "whooshing" sound. this bottle was not as sturdy as i was expecting. it flexes (pinches? just about breaks?) when you suck in to drink and, as many have mentioned, you have to suck very loudly. i didn''t mind the noise but the effort and the poor quality really got to me. perhaps to be ecofriendly, the waterbobble is very thin and seems easily punctured or pinched. not good for chugging down water or even drinking it! it has quickly been replaced by a camelbak from target. i feel stupid for wasting my money on this. i even got an extra filter because i was so sure this would be the answer to my water problems! blast.

I purchased this filter just over 4 years ago. Let me start by saying that this filter still functions well. The water coming out of the filter still tastes clean. The flow is as good or better than the first day I installed it. There were times when the water flow slowed down but it comes and goes. Most of the time, this filter has been working very well. I am currently experiencing an issue with small bits of carbon finding its way back to the faucet aerator causing the water stream from my faucet to clog. Other than this minor annoyance, the filter has performed its duties very well.

The faucet begins to leak when using the original O ring. Leaking stops after changing a thicker O ring. It''s been fine for half year.

The filter spout started dripping after half year when switching to use tap water. So, I guess the valve in the internal switch doesn''t work very well now.

We just purchased this, and love the idea of not having to change a filter/get another system for several years. However, we do have some observations and questions:

1. We flushed the system per the time recommended; and as other folks wrote, the water WAS black when it first came out.

2. After installation and flushing, the water still has tiny pieces of sediment and an oily film on top. Ew. Help?

3. The water has a kind of "sour" aftertaste. We''re hoping this will diminish as time goes on, and we use it more and more.

I''m at a loss as to the problems some other reviewers have had with this coffeemaker. I actually purchased the white unit but it''s the same as this one except for the color and metal trim. I bought this machine locally and then went and read the reviews here on Amazon to make sure it was an OK unit. I was on the verge of returning it due to some of the negative comments but I figured "ah, to heck with it" and went ahead and set it up. First off, it makes a great cup of coffee and it''s EASY to program. The pot is easy to pour...NO DRIPS and the water level indicator works as it should. I just wonder if all the negative reviewers work for the competition because I found no problems with this unit at all. Now, of course, time will tell if it will last many years as did my last machine but my first impressions are very good.

If looks were everything, this product would rate five stars. The Krups FME4-14 12-cup coffeemaker has a very attractive design. The brushed stainless steel top and front panel with a squared off matte/gloss black plastic case presents a very elegant appearance. Most users will no doubt be very interested in the coffee this machine makes.

The 1100 watt heater affords a fast brewing cycle. The cone shaped filter basket uses #4 filters and the water is pumped over the grounds through a small but effective showerhead-style water outlet that''s ideal for concentrating the water in the best way to extract full coffee flavor.

This is not a machine just for the coffee purist who always begins with fresh, cold water while putting freshly ground beans into the filter basket and appreciating the heady aroma of the coffee from grinding to brewing. A useful feature is the programmable timer that''s perfect for those instances when you want to setup the machine in advance if you need a head start on coffee drinking. The operating buttons are big and clearly marked; the LCD clock display is large and it is back lighted in blue when the machine is turned on.

Some negatives that reduce the rating of this machine are:

1. A glass carafe that has cup markings on one side only; you can only measure by them if you hold the lid open with your right hand while pouring in the water with your left hand.

2. The carafe drips far too much when you pour the coffee...unless you pour very slowly.

3. There''s a hole in the back center of the machine about 1 inch below the top of the water tank. Apparently it''s an overflow port to prevent overfilling the machine. Under any circumstances, if you were to grossly overfill it, water would spill out on your counter. But, the tank barely holds 12 cups of water as measured by the carafe, and since this overflow is hidden from view in the back of the machine when it works you might think the machine is leaking. Unbelievably, it is quite possible to pour the water at just the right angle out the tank''s overflow since the tank is molded just like a funnel above the hole.

4. The water level indicator is useless regardless of whether you fill the machine all the way to the 12 cup level or somewhere in between. Water forms several bubbles in the magnifying plastic tube that prevent it from indicating anything at all.

Nonetheless, this Krups machine does make an excellent cup of coffee from start to finish. Whenever you let the coffee sit on the so-called "warmer" plate, the flavor of your brew will degrade. Therefore, you would do well to get an insulated carafe (in brushed stainless steel for coordination) if you want to make some extra.

Go ahead, enjoy all the exquisite drip coffee you can drink, and enjoy life.

I have not had any problem pouring a cup of coffee without dripping/spilling.

I think that the 1-3 cup feature is great: With my previous coffeemaker, it really wasn''t possible to brew a small amount of coffee and have it taste good; with this Krups'' machine''s 1-3 cup setting, I get a few nice, strong cups of coffee without having to use too many coffee beans.

The programming feature is easy to use. I read the manual once and then, two days later, remembered how to program the coffeemaker to brew at a specific time. It''s really as simple as pressing the "Prog" button quickly, toggling with the "hour/minutes" button" to set the timer. As to the fear that the machine will be a fire hazard by turning itself on without water because the timer is set, the manual clearly states that there is a safety feature that will turn the machine off if it gets turned on without any water in the reservoir. Yes, I would prefer a separate button to turn on/off the timer setting, but it isn''t that big of a deal.

I haven''t had any problem with water spilling out the back of the unit. In fact, I don''t even see the overfill hole in the back of the unit that a previous reviewer mentioned. I seldom brew 12 cups of coffee at once, so perhaps I''m not the best person to judge whether this is a problem. I did do the initial "clean the machine" routine by filling it up all the way to run clean water through it and I didn''t notice and spilling at that time.

I agree that the coffeemaker is somewhat cheaply built -surprisingly flimsy for a coffeemaker with a list price this high. I actually bought mine locally and chose the more expensive FME4-14 model because the stainless steel front added some solidity to the machine. The FME1 and FME2 models, all plastic, seemed extremely cheap and light. They all use the same filter basket mechanism, though, which appears to be fragile. This is not a machine for those people who are impatient or treat their possessions in a rough manner. I can see breaking the swing out door or the filter holder because of how thin the plastic is. On the other hand, I bought this coffeemaker to replace an even more expensive Cuisinart model that broke just out of warranty. (Well, the coffemaker still worked but the brew-and-pour feature stopped working because a piece of plastic in the filter basket broke. Actually, I couldn''t even use the thing at all until I bought a 10 cent washer at a local hardware store and jimmied the thing back into somewhat of a workable condition -at least it no longer just spewed coffee all over my counter, but the brew-and-pour feature still didn''t work. And, of course, I couldn''t find the replacement part I needed to actually make the machine whole again. Also, the water level meter in that machine stopped working after just a few months and the clock was so poor that it gained over one minute EVERY DAY, interfering with the machine''s ability to actually brew at a specific time each day using it''s programming function.)

I agree that there should be markings on both sides of the carafe. This pot is designed for right-handed people because the markings are visible when it''s picked up in the right hand. However, given the water level read out on the machine itself (which, despite others'' experiences, I haven''t had a problem with yet), this doesn''t seem to be a big deal.

As to the warming plate''s surface flaking off, I have to wonder what that person was using to clean the machine. The manual specifically states not to use ANYTHING abrasive on the machine and that reviewer used the word "scour." Really, when cleaning off the small drips of coffee that inevitably get on a warming plate when using a brew-and-pour feature (I''ve never seen a coffee maker that was perfect about stopping coffee from dripping when the pot is removed during brewing), all one needs to use is the soft side of a kitchen sponge for a quick wipe.

My biggest gripe about this machine is the manual. It is poorly laid out: there is a picture of the machine on one page with letters pointing to various features, but the legend of what those letters means appears a few pages later. Obviously the legend needs to be on the facing page of the manual. I was also a little concerned when initially unpacking the thing. There''s a large piece of styrofoam holding the pot in place and I was concerned about breaking the filter basket door when I was ripping it out of the machine. The manual contains NO instructions about unpacking the machine. Normally instructions for something this basic aren''t necessary, but if Krups is going to pack something this delicate in such a screwy way, they should provide better information to the end consumer. Perhaps this is how some reviewers'' filter holder doors became broken in the first place. Another problem with the manual was the instruction to "rotate" the water filter holder open in order to insert the filter. No illustrations were provided. I don''t know about you, but I consider "rotating" to mean twisting something off. But the filter holder is actually designed to be flipped open (one side should remain attached while the other flips down). Given how flimsy the plastic is on this part, too, I could easily see someone breaking the filter holder if they weren''t careful and actually tried to rotate the end of it off.

I cannot speak to the longevity of the machine as I''ve only owned it for less than one month, but so far I''m liking its features and, more importantly, the taste of the coffee it produces.

I''ve only had this coffeemaker for a short time, but so far I have absolutely no complaints and am totally satisfied. I haven''t experienced any of the problems cited by other reviewers. I actually prefer it to my previous machine (the Cuisinart with all the unnecessary switches and buttons) -it''s very easy to use and easy to clean. It does seem a little less solid than the Cuisinart, but so far I haven''t had any problems with its durability. (I will update if that changes.) Only minor complaint so far, not worth demoting the machine to 4 stars, is that the "program" setting isn''t automatically turned off after it has been used. So, if you forget to turn the program setting off and don''t fill up the machine one night, it will turn on with no water and coffee the next morning and presumably stay on for 2 hours. I''m trying to train myself to turn the programming off after each use to make sure this doesn''t happen.

Do NOT use the brass ferules, get the plastic ones and don''t forget the stiffeners. The plastic water fountain that comes with the Culligan filter is the ultimate in cheapness. I also didn''t like the plastic T-fitting that came with the Culligan, the tubing is just press fit into it. For under 5 dollars you can buy a nice brass T.

When I didn''t receive the fountain on time I emailed the company that sells it. They responded that day that they sent it to the wrong address and had already shipped a new one to me by second day. I received it 2 days after the email, great customer service.

The faucet arrived pretty much as advertised shipped quickly and arrived in good condition. I''ve only recently installed it, but it seems to work fine and it matches well with my main kitchen faucet. This seller sent me a faucet that was about as opposite of its visual and written description as possible. ( I took pictures of it before I sent it back). "Euro Style"? How about "Industrial Look"? "Brushed Nickel"? More Like "Brushed Stainless Steel"? ( Huge difference; every other brushed nickel product on the market has a flat, subdued tone. The one I was sent looked exactly like someone took a wire brush to a piece of stainless steel). "Candy Cane Style"? This one is almost funny. I would say that by their third Christmas most people know the shape of a candy cane. If somebody decorated for the holidays with candy canes shaped like the product I was sent, they''d draw comparisons to Clark Griswold (from National Lampoon''s Christmas Vacation). Not only was the shape odd, but it was plain ugly. To top it off, when I returned the item directly to the seller, they tried to charge me for the original shipping costs. Mr. Clean 446840 Magic Eraser Roller Mop

I really like Mr Clean products especially the magic eraser. So when I found this this mop I thought this has to be a good product BUT it is not. The two plastic screws pop out making the mop useless. I was able to ring the water out of the mop head one time before the plastic tabs popped out. I put them back in as tight as they would go and again they popped out. I did this several times before becoming utterly frustrated. I even tried replacing the plastic tabs with screws and they too popped out!!!! This mop is useless and I''m very disappointed in Mr Clean!!!!!

I bought this at the grocery store just on a whim because I needed a mop, don''t like how dirty rope mops get and this seemed like it would be clean looking and easy to use. The problem is that the first time you pull the handle down to wring the mop out, this actually rips the foam mop head away from the mop. The wringing device is either too powerful or it is connected in a flimsy manner (probably both). For reference, mine has "metal screws" as opposed to the "plastic screws" some have mentioned which supposedly attach the foam head. Furthermore, the foam part of the "magic eraser" mop became cracked and broken even before I began to use it. After mopping only a small section of my kitchen floor, the mop was impossible to rinse out hair and dirt were irremediably stuck to its surface. Total immersion in water, rinsing energetically, and even trying to brush dirt off its surface with my hand did not produce a clean white surface again (as I had been led to believe from the package). Before it ripped itself apart, it did not even clean my floor well -I achieved a small measure of cleanliness with the same amount of manual scrubbing with the mop head that I could have achieved with some wadded-up paper towels. I will attempt to return the tonight, as well as write to the company. This mop is a "Don''t buy!" for sure!

I bought this mop almost a year ago and have used it countless times with no issues. I''m not sure why everyone''s so upset with it, as far as these kinds of mops go it''s fine for what it is. It''s light, I''ve not had any problems with the plastic pieces, my water is filthy after just one or two good swipes which tells me it''s cleaning the floor, the mop rings out just fine, the spots on my floor take virtually no effort to clean up, um...... I can''t really say more other than I bought the mop to mop the floor, and it mops the floor. I used to be a janitor, too. So, I am actually pretty picky with my cleaning products. I gave this three stars because it''s just......a mop. Nothing spectacular, and certainly not as terrible as everyone makes it out to be.

I bought this mop after my old fashioned mop, with the ropes, fell apart. I thought I would try something new. WOW! What a terrible cleaning tools. I bought this because the magic eraers are so neat and can clean anything! This mop however, is the most horrible mop I have ever used! After huffing and puffing for half hour to scrub the floor clean, the water I am using to mop the floor is still clean enough to mop 10 more floors! I have never reviewed on here before,but I feel compelled to let everyone know just what a total piece of junk this thing is.I had a Sunbeam for years that was great and it finally gave out.I wanted the best and in stainless steel,so after much research this Whynter was rated tops. I ordered it (not from Amazon), and it took 3.5 weeks to arrive. It sure is nice looking but it ends there. The water was p*** warm,and there is no temp adjustments. When the chiller turns on to "chill" the water,it makes noises like it was going to blow up. But the icing on the cake is when water started leaking out of the tap,and then from under the whole dispensor area all over my new hardwood floor. I ripped it out and tossed it as soon as I could of course this was just after the warranty expired. I now have one of the free water coolers from a home water delivery company that is fine. This is what anyone should do get your cooler from them DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE BUY THIS PRODUCT WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY. IF I COULD RATE IT LESS THEN 1 I WOULD!

I hate weeding through the reviews for evaporative coolers because it seems like the majority of bad reviews are from people who have no clue what they are and what they are supposed to do, a few are from people who can''t follow basic instructions, and there are only a handful of legitimate negative reviews that are usually due to defective issues.

I live in Denver, CO. It''s dry here and it''s the perfect climate for evaporative coolers. I''ve had whole-house swamp coolers in previous homes I''ve lived and know many friends with them. In my home, I have no option for a portable or window A/C air conditioner as I spend most of my time in our finished basement and there''s not a good option for exhaust. Last summer we got quotes for central A/C but it''s a lot more money than I want to spend and I also don''t want the electricity bill that goes along with it. We have a whole house fan (not to be confused with an attic fan) that we run in early morning before it reaches 70 degrees and that we run again at night, usually after 9pm, or whenever it gets cool enough outside. Sometimes with an afternoon rain shower we turn it on sooner.

I bought the evaporative cooler to supplement the whole house fan on those reallllly hot days and/or for the middle of the day when we we''re not running it due to it being hotter outside than it is inside. The house fan cools the ground floor much better than our basement due to the lack of air flow from our basement windows because of the window well covers we have. Also, this summer I''m pregnant with a due date of August 15th and that doesn''t help my comfort situation. Basically, an evaporative cooler is exactly what I wanted and what fit our situation.

Think of it as a fan on steroids. Cold air DOES come out of it. Today it is 88 degrees outside and humidity is 16%... a typical Colorado summer day. I have the cooler about 3 feet away from me and 8 feet away from my husband. I have it on high and I''m actually getting cold. I have it on the "swing" setting otherwise I would probably turn it down. It doesn''t guzzle through water too quickly and filling it once a day is enough since I''m not running it 24/7. I use a gallon pitcher to fill it up faster since it holds 10 liters (2.5 gallons). I have an automatic ice maker in my fridge so I don''t have any issues running out of ice. I can''t think of any features it''s missing. It''s not too loud even on high it''s like a normal fan. There''s no smell at all but I do actually change the water frequently and follow the cleaning instructions. Trust me on the smell thing, I can smell anything from very far away ever since I''ve been pregnant. You can wash the air filter on the back but DO NOT USE WATER to clean the wick. It is meant to be placed in direct sunlight to clean. I think that is why some other people had issues with smell or mold. Follow the directions, please. It has a remote, timers, sleep modes, swing function (just the fan blades inside swing, not the entire unit), warning beeps and visual indicators when it runs low on water (nice feature to avoid burning out the water pump), and an extra place to put ice on top in addition to putting ice in the water tank. You can adjust the blades on the front to direct the air flow whichever way you need to vertically. It also has an ionizer and you can run it as just a fan if you''d like, so no need for a second unit just to get some air circulating.

All in all... this thing does exactly what it says it will do. It''s exactly what I wanted. It came assembled, which was a big bonus. It''s only 17 lbs and has built in handles on the sides so I can actually carry it upstairs by myself if it''s empty, even being super pregnant. It''s on wheels to make it easier to push around when I don''t have to take it to another floor. It was less than half what other similar units cost for the same tank size and air output.

I''ve only has this thing for a week. I will be sure to update my review once I''ve had it for awhile.

UPDATE 6/24 I''ve found that when I run this thing on high for 8-10 hours per day, we do need to fill it every day or every other day at the very least (depending on if I fill it to the max level... usually I just add 1 gallon when I fill it). However, when I''m running it on medium or low and not using it as much (more like 5-6 hours per day), it can last about a week without needing a refill. I typically don''t bother putting ice in anymore unless it''s a day with over 95 degree temperatures and I want extra cold air. The only thing I wish it had was an easy way to drain it in case I want to move it upstairs when it''s not empty. However, I don''t think any model I looked at had this feature (or at least it wasn''t mentioned). It has NEVER made the room feel muggy even with no open windows and honestly I don''t feel any difference in the humidity in the room. Almost every day it''s been less than 20% humidity outside, and I''ve never seen it get over 30% outside. I''m still happy with this purchase and stand by my 5 stars. I''m glad I got this instead of spending much more on a similar unit.

UPDATE 6/25/2012 We didn''t use this thing at all once it got cool out last fall. We drained it (easy to do while not pregnant) and put it in our basement storage closet. When we brought it back out a couple weeks ago, I vacuumed the screen on the back, filled it with water and drained it again to rinse it out. No musty smell or anything and it works just as well as last year. The room we normally are using this in stays pretty cool compared to the rest of the house, so now we''re purchasing a wall-unit swamp cooler that is 5500 CFMs, hoping it will keep the entire house cool. The only thing I don''t like about this cooler is that it''s too short to feel it when laying in bed. You can tilt the blades up and down to direct airflow vertically, but it''s not enough for a king size bed that''s on a frame and box spring. For those of you wondering the electricity cost is negligible. I don''t see any difference in our electricity consumption when we are using it every day compared to when we aren''t. However, my husband and I work work full time so we don''t use it as much as someone that doesn''t work or works from home. I''m still happy with this purchase and thing it''s a great portable swamp cooler for the price!

I live in California in the Bay Area. Not much humidity and the weather is typically pretty mild but it does get pretty hot in the summer (90+ degrees). I received the unit on a particularly hot day recently and I ran out and grabbed a bag of ice because i wanted to test this things cooling capability. I set it up next to my computer desk and turned on the cool air function. I was sitting about 5 feet from it and in 5 minutes my arm was freezing cold. I was perfectly comfortable the whole day but if i moved from the fan at all the heat was unbearable. This thing does not cool a room but it will cool the area directly in front of it. Once it cooled down a bit I emptied the water (which was made very easy due to the lightness of the unit) into my bathroom sink and used it that night as a normal fan. Its pretty quiet and the fan is powerful. Ive heard these swamp coolers can generate a musty smell so I make sure to empty it of water when I''m done using the cool air function. I only fill it with water when its extremely hot because the fan works fine for me most days. It''s a very nice unit and it''s exactly what I was looking for. Better than a fan and more efficient that an air conditioner.

To be fair, the product does not claim to be an air conditioner. However, it does claim to cool 12 degrees cooler, which I didn''t find at all. I live in a dry Colorado climate, and still it is barely cooler than a fan. You have to fill it with tons of ice to even get that, and it requires refilling with water and ice often. If you don''t clean it at least once a week, it starts smelling really bad.

All this effort of refilling and cleaning is not worth the 3 to 5 degrees cooler you get. For that, I''d rather just plug in a fan and not have to worry about it every day. Save your money and buy a portable air conditioner. It''s worth the extra investment, trust me.

I use this unit in my home in Phoenix Arizona in an enclosed room with very little air circulation. It has kept me from becoming sweating over the course of the hot spring nights thus far, and that makes it worth the purchase. It''s better than a fan, because a fan wouldn''t reduce the temperature in my personal area like this device seems to. It basically cancels out the heat emanating from my computer and other devices. So as a result I don''t overheat and am at a neutral sort of "room temperature" typically. It''s not chilly, however. In my circumstances, at least, it doesn''t provide that coldness you would expect from an AC unit set on 70. So if you have to have that, then I would advise a normal AC unit over this product. But this does prevent me from becoming a sweaty mess by the time I want to sleep. And for that reason I''m happy with it.

If you do use it for say over 5 hours, it will slowly start to build up humidity in a room with little or no ventilation. But even that effect I find to be mild. I''ve had it go for 7 hours and all I noticed was a very slight dampness on the floor. My computer was fine, and everything electronic was unaffected. It did start to get balmy slowly after that point so I went ahead and opened my window for a bit. But it was only an inconvenience for the many hours of non-sweating it had provided.

My method for draining has simply been to place the unit on the side of my bathtub with one roller hooking onto that ledge, and to lean the other end slightly into the tub, and remove the cap: letting gravity do the rest. This does take a little strength to do, but It''s quick and easy. My only complaint about the device is that It''s cord is a bit short, about 8 feet long, and only barely reaches to my desk from the necessary socket across my room. Just something notable, but not anything you couldn''t work around with an extension cable or something. Make sure to put a lot of ice into it, the instructions don''t do justice to how much "2 liters or so" really is in reality! It''s a good small buckets worth. That will last all night.

All in all an economic solution to being a sweaty mess in the desert nights.
