GE GXSM01HWW Shower Filter System Save 33% Off

GE GXSM01HWW Shower Filter System
  • Can help improve skin and hair by removing harmful minerals and sediments from shower water
  • Reduces chlorine taste and odor for clean, healthier water
  • Easy to install on standard 1/2-Inch shower head and pipe connections
  • Tool-less filter change
  • Provides up to 6 months of filtered water, change filter after 6 months of use or 10,000 gallons

Short Story: I knew there was a lot of chlorine in my water, so I only drink bottled water. Then while I was whining about my hair thinning, a friend says that `Dr. Oz'' was on Oprah saying that chlorine and other chemicals in our water can cause thinning hair. Off to Home Depot I went, but they and all other stores were out of just a filter (I didn''t need an entire fancy showerhead system). When I finally received this Model in the mail, I screwed it on, turned on the water and the darn thing popped off and broke. I returned by mail it for another one, but that one is very tenuous in its stability. I would highly recommend getting a good solidly made shower head filter. This GE model is cheaply made, which brings up the old adage, "You get what you pay for". I''ll let you know if my hair stops falling out later. I''ll also let you know when I buy yet another BETTER filter (probably soon).

UPDATE: Two showers later, the entire filter snapped off. Now that didn''t last long! I headed out for a GOOD filter head today! I ended up buying the "Culligan WHS-C125 Wall-Mount 10,000 Gallon Capacity Filtered Showerhead, Chrome Finish".

As a person who used to suffer from extreme acne when I was a teen I still have some very tiny scarring on my cheeks that most of the time is unnoticeable unless my skin is dry. So going with a chlorine filter on my shower head is a must! This little guy does the job. I am a fan of a long showers and washing my face in detail. This means my showers are a bit longer but in the name of clearer skin its a must. This little guy helps a lot. My skin is softer, my hair is DARKER, and the soap lathers up really well for some reason. I thought it was in my head but apparently chlorine free water does that.... Chlorine plus an exfoliating scrub used to kill my skin now I look 1 3 years younger and my skin no longer has a chapped or sun burnt feeling. Now I can wash away and take my time. My main gripe is the thing looks cheap and awkward and that''s because, well, it is cheap and awkward! I think it could use a bigger chlorine filter or perhaps an activated charcoal combo filter.

This thing does the job. For the price I can''t complain. Its a great entry level shower head to see if this is something you want in your shower. I strongly suggest that you get a new shower head something a bit more on the pricey side. (not the 1.00 apartment maintenance man special) I have found that just blasting my face with water only makes my skin dry and kills my hot water heater also it could be shortening the life of my filter and weakening its performance. So if your going through the hassle of buying a chlorine filter and installing it, you should opt for a waterpik shower head and complete the setup. I did, now my skin looks great my light brown hair is dark brown and the women love it. Plus I shave 2 3 year off my face. Oh and shaving feels better because my skin is not chapped or cracked feeling.

I may upgrade later, its been a year using this specific model.

Good luck and happy showering.

We just have a normal shower and a normal shower head, but the "strain" of adjusting the angle of the head was too much for the extremely poorly designed junction where the filter screws onto the shower pipe, and it broke completely off. How this thing made it through any R&D is beyond me.

I bought a lot of units of this product but I was dissapointed when the 2nd one I installed was broken from the base because is manufactured with a fragil plastic, when you tight the product you are in a big risk to broked up. When you don''t use it by several weeks, the water go out in a yellow color that make you feel the water is so dirty, I didn''t expect to have to wait until the yellow color disapear while you are dropping out the water.

I spent some time looking for a good filter for my shower. My water is generally very bad, and I started to have quite a few issues with my skin and hair. I used this product because it was the only one I could find locally. It worked for two weeks, but one day the unit snapped off at the joint where it screws into the shower pipe. Not repairable.

Spend the extra few dollars to get a shower head with a filter built in. Beware any product that attaches precariously to the shower head and water pipe.

Mr. Coffee VBX23 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker

Mr. Coffee VBX23 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker, BlackI love coffee! Coffee, coffee & more coffee! For as long as I can remember, I have owned the basic, easy-to-use, bell and whistle-less Mr. Coffee Machine.

Early one morning, I was horrified to discover that the heating elment on my then current machine had committed suicide the night before. It was an ugly morning of bumping into walls and uttering quite a few ugly little sentences. Avid coffee drinkers will understand.

So I head over to the local "Linnens-and-Beyond" type place,(what exactly is the "beyond" part anyway?)and I found it. The basic, black, 12 cup, on/off, timer if I should ever decide to use it, under $30.00 Mr coffee. Yay! Oh the rejoicing!!

Until I got it out of the box. The horror! They had changed the design of my beloved basic machine!

It used to be that just the back water chamber lid opened. Now the whole top of the machine is lidded. The problem? I have to pull the machine all the way to the edge of the counter to pour the water in. Then I have to push the whole thing back after it is full. Splash!! Ok not so big a problem, right?

Wrong!! And now for the idiots of the world, they have introduced two sunflower seed sized holes on the back wall of the water chamber. I suppose this is so he chamber is not over-filled. Great. So any water that I may overpour goes all over the counter. Or when I push the machine back into place, the splashing water in the chamber comes out you guessed it, all over the counter. Hey guys, thanks. What a brilliant idea.

Oh, did I mention that the pot itself is it''s own little nightmare and a half. This pot spills, spills, spills and spills some more. When filling the chamber, it dribbles. When I am pouring a cup, it dribbles all over, you guessed it, my counter. Gee, I sure am getting sick of wiping up the counter.

Open up the top of this machine and you will find the filter basket which has above it, a pivoting water arm. Ths arm must be moved anytime the filter is to be removed or replaced. Did I mention I wanted basic? Why am I delaing with moving parts at 5am? Oh one more flaw with this design. Remember our dribbling special-ed pot? Well if any water you are pouring into the chamber hits the axis point of the pivoting arm (ooh fancy!), said water will dribble instantaneously onto the heating element below (where the pot sits). Yay! More to wipe up!

Ok, so the bottom line is, pass on this design. I don''t know why the original design had to be changed, but change is not always a good thing.

The company should reimburse me for all the paper towels I have to use EVERY day.

I would like to see the machine go back to its previous design so I may be able to start my day NEATLY and happily with my oldest friend, Mr. Coffee.

Unfortunately (for me) I largely agree with The Electric Rat''s review. I wanted a basic coffee maker (so many others have very complicated-looking features, or add-ons like grinders and filters that I already have separate from my coffee maker, and they add a lot to the price). This one is basic but the design could be better. I''d say this coffee maker is OK, but research others before you buy it, maybe you can get something better for the same price.

Pros:

-Makes good coffee.

-I''m happy with the temperature (I''m also not a fan of coffee that you have to let sit for 20 minutes to avoid 3rd degree burns).

-Looks nice on the counter.

-Can set to brew in advance.

-2-hour shutoff.

-Contrary to other reviews I have not had any problems with the pot itself spilling when pouring. I am careful when pouring, but with my old coffee maker, even when I was careful it would spill.

-I only have to clean the removable parts. My old coffee maker used to get very dirty on the top and I would have to scrub it with a paper towel, and never could get it fully clean. With this one I don''t have to do that. I think a couple of the bad features below are what make me not have to clean that piece, so I''m a little torn on how I feel about it.

-When I open the lid after brewing coffee, the water clinging to the top funnels neatly back into the reservoir (where it evaporates after a while left open), and does not spill onto the counter.

Cons:

-The entire top flips up to put in coffee and water, so I have to pull the whole coffee maker to the edge of the counter, because it flips too high for the cabinets.

-There are holes in the back of the water reservoir, so if I pour too much in it''ll leak all over the counter. The holes are only just above the 12-cup mark so I haven''t spilled yet but it makes me nervous every time I make coffee (which is often). I would much rather not have those holes, and have to pour the water out of the coffee maker if I were to put too much in.

-When pouring water into the reservoir, if you''re pouring on the left side (you can use either side), you have to be very careful not to pour onto the water arm and splash.

-I''ve had trouble with the sneak-a-cup feature. I haven''t gotten it to work without a spill onto the hot plate, which I have to sop up with a paper towel (be careful!) or else when I put the pot back on, it sizzles for a long time.

This maker does a good job brewing the coffee. It is easy to use and make s a HOT cup of coffee. However, you would think after all these years of designing coffee pots, Mr. Coffee would have the best design. Nope, not even close.

No matter how slow I go or hard I try, the coffee pot ALWAYS "dribbles". To put it simply, it is a very bad design. If you pour a cup of coffee, do it on a napkin.

This product is the poster child of a product that is designed to break after being used for a relatively short period of time. After a year or so of normal use, I found that I could no longer turn the coffee pot on. After fiddling with it for a short period of time, most people would toss it and go out and buy a replacement. I took it apart, however (the manufacturer was clever enough to replace two of the six phillips-bit screws with torx-bit screws and hide them under the rubber feet which once again would have prevented their dirty secret from being discovered from someone less prepared) and I found that they offset the power switch a quarter of an inch side of the external button, and glued an activating arm to the external button so it would press the power switch. Naturally, such a flimsy arrangement would break off in short order. Looking at the curcuit board shows absolutely no practical reason to set it up that way (it would have actually increased their manufacturing costs by a couple of pennies) other than to design a product that you would be forced to replace after a year or so of normal, daily use.

I won''t be buying another Mr. Coffee product again.

I was getting fed up with

$100 coffee makers which didn''t keep the coffee hot, or dripped when poured, so i decided to try this one, and got it on sale at an incredible price, under $20!!!!! it is attractive, easy to use, makes a nice hot brew and is quick and quiet. the only negative is that you have to use MORE coffee grinds. for some reason, perhaps the lack of a cone shaped basket, the coffee was weak using the normal amount of coffee. so i add an extra scoop for 6 cups, and an extra 2 scoops for 12 cups. not a big deal and the coffee is great. save your money for good quality coffee, and enjoy this lovely cofffeemaker. i have stopped being a coffee maker snob! and this is after years of having problems with the top of the line products!!!!

Doulton HCPS Countertop Water Filter Save 30% Off

Doulton HCPS Countertop Water Filter with Ceramic Ultracarb FilterI bought the Doulton Countertop Water Filter a couple months ago and I''m sorry I did. I can''t drink the water from it given the ceramic filter continually discharges something into the water that is gritty. My mouth is coated with a film of grit after drinking the water. The ceramic filters, when new, are coated with some type of powder which looks like residue from the manufacturing process and it appears this is what ends up in the drinking water. The directions require a new filter to have water run thought it for 10 min followed by a 24 hour rest period and then another 10mins of water but after doing that and running lots of additional water through the filter before I fill up a glass it still is gritty. I''m on my 2nd cartridge. The first had the same problem but got better but returned to being unduly gritty as I used it more. All in all a grossly unsatisfactory experience.

I''m kind of shocked by the bad reviews on this, especially since the reviews on the Doulton filter that goes INSIDE this unit are glowing.

Check them out at:

http://www.amazon.com/Doulton-Ultracarb-Ceramic-Replacement-Candle/dp/B000NZRFYQ/ref=sr_1_2?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1357519555&sr=1-2&keywords=doulton+filter

I''ve had this for ten years, changed the filter twice, and am about to again.

I''ve never bothered with cleaning the filter since it lasts so long between filters for me.

Not only has it always tasted great but if I try to give people tap water and mention I also have filtered available, they ALWAYS much prefer the taste of the Doulton filtered version. So it''s not just me that notices the difference.

And the Doulton isn''t just made to only improve the taste, like so many of the other cheaper filters are, it''s for filtering nasty stuff like lead and chemicals which the others leave in.

A great product with zero problems after over ten years of constant use.

Does it get better than that?

I bought this in February of 2010 (for more than the current $134 list). I live in Los Angeles, where the water is terrible. I am stunned at what a poor purchase this was! I did a lot of research, yet the taste of the water is TERRIBLE. A simple Brita pitcher tastes exponentially better. Doulton should be ashamed!

I had called Doulton after I purchased the product, and they wouldn''t do anything about it since I didn''t buy directly through them. In addition to terrible water taste, the filter has quite a long stream of water after you shut off the tap. After over a year without using the filter, and at a new house, I actually did buy a replacement cartridge this month. Since I had already made the investment in the system, I figured I would put it on bathroom tap at the very least -which is where it''s going to go. I recently called again, to see if I could get some advice or assistance, and once again the rep was surprised not only that the water tasted terrible, but that it streamed that much water after shut off.

So: defective filter that the company won''t stand by, or just a sub-par filter for dirty Los Angeles water? I''m sorry I gave this another try. Truly very disappointing and aggravating and a waste of money.

By the way, the dog won''t drink the water either. The dog drinks all sorts of water piles in all sorts of dirty places.

Save yourself the trouble. I''m going to try another countertop system -with a warranty -and hope that works. Unimpressed with Doulton all around. (I purchased a very inexpensive Vitamin C shower filter on Amazon and that company promptly honored their product when I needed a replacement part...) I''m trying something off EWG''s recommended lists:

Good luck.

I have had this Doulton Countertop Water Filter with Ceramic Ultracarb Filter since 1995, which I bought for $135! No price inflation here! Very sturdy and efficient system. The filter does its job for one person for about 6-12 months, depending on usage. There''s a built-in (inadvertent?)safety feature that prevents using the filter when it''s no longer functional: the water flow weakens, then eventually stops. If this happens, one unscrews the canister, and cleans the filter candle with a brush, or after 2 or 3 cleanings, replaces the filter. The goop that gums up the works is what I would have been drinking without the filter! Yuck! Nothing is more compelling for water purification than a used-up filter! Don''t live at home without it! Highly recommended, and very reasonably priced.

Wellness S-III Replacement Water Filter Cartridge-Kitchen

Wellness S-III Replacement Water Filter Cartridge-KitchenOh no! Wellness Filter distributions have stopped here in the US the distributor went out of business. So I grabbed some of the last filters for my sinktop model. I hope someone will pick up this business line soon as Wellness Filters are simply the best. I have used them for many years, bottling my own water for work and using the water at home for drinking, cooking, canning and so on. The water is delicious.

You can still get Wellness Filters from Australia and Japan. Good luck.

I originally purchased the Wellness S111 Water Filter for health reasons 4 years ago after doing extensive research online and through doctors recommendations. It has proven to be the best investment I could have made.

The replacement filters last for a year or little longer and removes more toxins than any other filter I have researched; they are consistently terrific. The company has excellent customer service provisions and is available to answer all questions. I highly recommend them and all their products.

Zojirushi EC-BD15BA Fresh Brew Thermal Carafe Coffee Maker Save 14% Off

Zojirushi EC-BD15BA Fresh Brew Thermal Carafe Coffee MakerI''ve spent several weeks week getting to know the Zojirushi Fresh Brew... and for the most part, I''m quite pleased. It has some foibles [which I''ll get to in a moment] but on the whole it''s a very capable coffee brewer. More, it''s one of the very few home models I know that can brew 8 cups of just-roasted coffee at a proper 2 tablespoons per cup ratio without fuss, and this is important! maintain proper brewing temperatures throughout the entire brew cycle.

The details...

Zoji has been making vacuum pots and the like for nearly 100 years, and they''ve been making an assortment of rice-cookers, tea brewers and hot water dispensers for decades. While this is, I believe, their first home coffee brewer, they''ve got more than a little experience in kitchen electrics. They''ve put that experience to good use.

If you''ve ever brewed up a thermos full of coffee using a big Melitta filter cone then this setup will look pretty familiar. For all intents and purposes, the Fresh Brew simply adds an automated hot water delivery system to the mix... with a few improvements.

Improvement number one: not only does this system brew into an all-stainless thermal carafe [no hot plate here, thankyouverymuch] but it also insulates the brew basket. What good is it, after all, to heat up all that water if it''s just going to get cold while you''re brewing? This is huge! This is important! This is... well, I''m excited about it, okay?

Improvement number two: the Fresh Brew features an accurate gauge of water volume. When it reads that you''ve got 8 cups of water in the brewer''s reservoir, it means it. Mind you, we''re talking 6 oz. cups of water -that''s the way the coffee world measures a cup [unless you''re Bodum and then it''s 4 oz.].

Improvement number three: the Fresh Brew is patient. The biggest pain about the manual pour-over method is that you''ve got to wait to add more water, especially if the coffee is really fresh. Fresh coffee blooms with its charge of CO2! Faced with a full basket of coffee that was literally fresh from the roaster the Zoji didn''t overflow, nor did it heave grounds into the water dispensing shower-head. More, the grounds were thoroughly saturated; no dry spots.

So where''s the foibles?

Like a great many autodrip brewers the feeder tube that comes from the Zoji''s heating element to the shower-head takes a straight path right through the water reservoir. For most brewers this is a game-over situation... the heating element simply can''t overcome the heat exchange that occurs en route to the brew-head. On the Zoji, the heating element *does* get hot enough... provided that the water you''ve placed in the reservoir is not *too* cold.

Example A: In the office using the "unchilled" spigot on the water cooler, I draw off 48 ounces of water for the reservoir and brew a pot. Throughout the brew cycle water temperatures in the brew basket range between 195 and 200 degrees F. The result is a lovely pot of Ethiopian Yrgacheffe that is sweet, floral and lemony.

Example B: At home I draw off 48 ounces of water from the water filter in-line with the refridgerator. The temperature of the water in the reservoir is about 40 degrees F. and the resulting temperature in the brew basket never tops 185 degrees F. The result is an icky pot of the very same Yrgacheffe that is bitter, murky and flat.

The moral: mind your initial water temperature and you''ll do just fine.

All in all, the Zojirushi Fresh Brew is capable of making 8 cups of coffee that''s on a par with manual pourover methods. Better, really, as it insulates the brew-basket to better maintain water temperatures.

We purchased this machine last month, after much research, to replace a 6 year-old Cuisinart basic model. We were looking for a well-made thermal carafe machine at a reasonable price. We found it!

We can''t find enough good things to say about it! Of course it is very stylish looking and it fits nicely on our counter under our standard size cabinets. Yes, you have to move it out to fill the water chamber and basket, but big deal! I can do that!

It is extermely easy to program with just enough controls to make sense.

It makes good hot coffee that stays nice and hot for a good while. While it may not keep it scorching hot like a model with a hot plate, which also continues to cook and burn your coffee, it is definitely hot enough! We made some coffee one morning and didn''t finish it. We purposely left it in the pot while we were gone and upon returning home at 5 pm, the coffee was still amazingly warm. It was not hot enough to want to drink it, but we were amazed at the heat it had retained.

We think this model is extermely easy to clean and doesn''t have lots of parts that look as though they might break. Not only does the basket where you place your filter and grounds come out, but so does the container which holds the basket. It lifts up and you can rinse it out. The slots that hold this container also have holes in the bottom so junk doesn''t collect. The lid on the carafe works easily and the secondary lid is nice too.

We also think this machine makes the coffee extremely quickly!

We have seen absolutely no leakage problems or overflow troubles. And for sure this model can use the standard #4 cone filters. I called the maker before purchasing it to make sure. It sticks up a hair over the edge of the basket, but it has made no difference and has caused no problems.

Overall, this is a great buy so far! We went back and forth on which model to buy and finally decided on this one. We love it!

Buy Zojirushi EC-BD15BA Fresh Brew Thermal Carafe Coffee Maker Now

I was looking for a coffee maker with a large capacity, unbreakable carafe, auto-shut-off, pause-and-serve, and a programmable timer. I found everything I wanted

with this Zoji.

It has a stylish, brushed stainless carafe that stays cool to the touch and has no breakable glass liner like some carafes have. The base has an easy to read water-level display, with markings up to 10 cups, but it has a larger capacity than my old 10 cup Braun. It also has a cute little elephant on it!

The 1.5 liters works out to approx. 51 ounces, or just over 6 (8-ounce) cups. My old "10 cup" coffee maker held about 5 8-ounce cups. I never have quite figured out what counts as a "cup" in coffee terms, but it seems to vary between 4 and 6 ounces.

This is a pretty tall (15 inches) coffee maker, and you have to lift the lid to add the coffee and the water. Since steam comes out of the top, I pull it out from under the cabinet when it''s running. If you have shallow counters, this could be a little tricky.

The only down side, in my opinion, is that it uses the hard-to-find #3 filters. I''ve gotten around it by cutting about 1 inch off the top of my #4s. I also had a little trouble getting the lid off the carafe when I screwed it on too tight I had to put a towel over it to get a good grip. Those minor details aren''t enough to cost it a star, though.

I''m not sure how long coffee stays hot in this carafe, because we drink so much coffee around here it doesn''t stay in there very long. I did sleep in one morning, though, and the coffee that was automatically made at 6:15 was still hot at 7:30.

Overall, I am extremely happy with this coffee maker. I have hot coffee ready for me whenever I get up in the morning, and I never have to wonder whether I forgot to shut it off when I leave the house.

I have owned A LOT of coffeemakers over the course of my 50 years (alright I didn''t own many the first 15 years or so,) and I even sold them back in 2000 when I worked in the housewares department of my local Filene''s department store. As I stated in the title of this review, I believe that the Zojirushi Fresh Brew is better than any of those other brands; not because it has more bells and whistles (it doesn''t), not because it''s better looking (it is), but because it makes the best cup of coffee I have ever had.

The unit heats the water to a near perfect brewing temperature of 185 to 190 degress. The brew time is also just about ideal; it brews a 50 ounce carafe in 9 1/2 minutes (Zojirushi calls it a 10 cup carafe, I call it 2 1/2 cups, but I use a 20oz mug). The coffee comes out nice and hot, and neither too weak from too short a brewing time, nor scalded from too long a brewing time.

The Fresh Brew uses either #4 paper filters or a #4 gold filter. The original design used a #3 filter, and the filter holder is a little small for a #4. If you moisten the filter (as you really ought to anyway) before putting it in the holder, it fits perfectly. I''ve tried brewing coffee in this machine with both a gold filter and an unbleached paper filter; personally I prefer the coffee brewed with the paper filter (the gold filter allows more particulates to get into the coffee).

To get the best cup of coffee possible, you will want to grind your coffee finer than you probably have been. I have found that one step up from Espresso gind gives me the best flavour. Also, the single biggest reason people get a bad cup of coffee out of any coffee maker is that they don''t use enough coffee. In this machine, I use 1 3/4 scoops of coffee for every 6 oz of water, so for a full pot I use 14 scoops.

On other machines I''ve owned (Krups and DeLonghi in particular), the water reservoir was so long and narrow, that it was difficult to fill it without flooding the counter top. Not so with the Zojirushi, the reservoir has a nice, wide, opening.

Also, unlike some other coffee makers, the thermal carafe of the Fresh Brew has a pouring spout, so the coffee goes in your cup/mug, not all over the counter. The carafe itself is an insulated, double-walled, stainless steel, thermal carafe. Absolutely no heat is transmitted to the outer surface of the carafe, which of course means your coffee stays hotter. Also, since it is a thermal carafe, there is no heating element in the base of the Fresh Brew. This means that there is no chance of the coffee being "burned" from sitting on a heating pad for too long. Don''t leave the carafe on the Fresh Brew if you plan to leave coffee in it for any length of time. The carrafe has a top which you can put on, closing the opening where the coffee runs into the carafe. Sealed like that, the coffee will stay hot and fresh all day, but the top prevents the carafe from sitting on the coffee maker.

As for the bells and whistles, the Zojirushi only has a digital clock and a programmable auto brew feature.

On top of everything else, the Zojirushi sells for about half to two-thirds the suggested retail price of the other brands. How can you go wrong? With the Zojirushi Fresh Brew, you get the best possible cup of coffee (in my opinion) for about half the price of other coffee makers.

I really wanted this machine to work nice design, good features, good price.

The first one I got had the little carafe cap broken. Not a big deal, I emailed the company and they promised to send me another one. About a week later, the unit simply stopped brewing. I called the support line for troubleshooting and they told me to send the unit back for replacement.

I sent it back and Amazon shipped another one out promptly. Everything was fine the first day, but when I picked up the carafe the next day, the bottom came right off in my hand exposing the innards of the seal mechanism for the thermos. The spot welds all along the rim hadn''t taken and the carafe literally came apart in my hands.

Again I called the company asking if this was normal. Again they told me to return it and "give them one more chance". So I tried to like I say, I really wanted this machine to work.

Unfortunately the response I got from Amazon was:

"As it seems that the problem with this item is more widespread

than we originally thought, we are not able to send another

replacement."

Probably just as well, after going through 2 units in under 2 weeks, the chances of the third one lasting anywhere near as long as I''d want it to are about nil.

So you can roll the dice and perhaps get yourself a good one I did it twice and unfortunately got 2 lemons in a row.

Buyer beware.

(I never did get the replacement cap from the first one. When I called about that, the rep I spoke to told me that they get so many calls that it''s impossible for them to follow up on each one to make sure it was resolved. I can see why they''re overwhelmed with support calls and it''s even more disturbing that customer service lets things slip through the cracks like this...)

(about a month later)

I replaced this with a Braun KF600... the choice is obvious having had both machines: the Braun is simply a better designed and better constructed machine for about the same price. Save yourself the hassle and buy it instead. It takes up less counter space, has a gold cone filter instead of the ill-fitting #4 paper filters, there''s no twist cap on the carafe to fight with...

To be fair, it doesn''t have a timer. Not a big deal for me.

Blueair 400 Series Replacement Particle Filter

Blueair 400 Series Replacement Particle Filter for the 400 Series Air PurifiersI was surprised and not happy when I first looked into air purifiers and found the one recommended most often --Blueair--used filters that cost about $50 and had to be replaced every 6 months. That was a few years ago. Since then, I have not begrudged one dime of what I have spent for replacement filters. I have pets that shed, I live in Manhattan on a street that has been worked on constantly, creating lots of airborne dirt, and my building was repointed a couple years ago, providing more of the same. And I have allergies.

But I sleep well every night and wake up without a stuffy nose. These filters work, and so does the purifier-as well as the day I first turned it on. So far it has outlived both the clock radio and a tower fan.

Like the other reviewer, I was a bit taken back by the $50 price of a filter that is supposed to be replaced every 6 months. But I bought the BlueAir 402 anyway.

This is one of those products that truly works! No false hype, no bogus claims. Since I don''t have pets, and nobody smokes in my home, I have found that I can get a year out of a filter without a problem. At the same time, I am impressed at how well this filter performs. The intake side of my 402 air purifier gets dusty the filter does show a darkening over time and the outlet screen of the purifier has *never* needed cleaned. That says a lot about the effectiveness of this filter.

There may be cheaper, and there are systems that use multiple pre-filters to extend the filter life, but there are no better. If you are considering a BlueAir 402 or other model, don''t let the price of this filter turn you away. You ARE getting what you pay for.

If you use the Blueair 402 Air Purifier for your office or bedroom, it truly is best if you change the filters every six months. It helps to write the date of the installation of the filter on the side facing you when you open the door of the unit so you know exactly when you put it in.

We found the best prices for replacement filters on Amazon.com. In the marketplace, they range from $[..] to $[..] each. Often, if you buy two or more, you get a good price break. They don''t go "bad", so the pricing can make a difference on a per unit cost if you stock up on them in volume.

It''s also good to clean the back metal screen on the unit ever other month. Turn off the unit, and clean upwards with a damp sponge until all the accumulated dust and dirt is removed. Let the screen dry and then turn on the unit again.

We find the 402 a great filter that makes no noise and does the job well.

I installed this filter in our BlueAir 403 in just two minutes. After removing the old filter and vacuuming out the interior per instructions I slid this new filter in the slot, aligning the arrows as directed. It is a snug, perfect fit which allows for maximum filter efficiency. Although not inexpensive, this filter, and the system in total has vastly improved the air quality in our bedroom. The plastic-wrapped filter was packaged in a rigid cardboard box which was then placed in a large shipping box; there was not a wrinkle in it. BlueAir filters are advertised to be environmentally friendly, decomposing into carbon dioxide and water which was a plus.

Pentek HD-950-34 Whole House Filter System Save 20% Off

Pentek HD-950-34 Whole House Filter System
  • Ametek/Pentek Filter Housings
  • 10" Big Blue Housing, Blue/Black 3/4" w/ Pressure Relief

This housing seems very heft and seems very durable. It is also quite heavy, so I thought it was a good idea to get the mounting bracket to screw it to the wall. I was a little afraid to hang it from my pipes only.

There are holes up top for a mounting bracket, but this is something extra you need to buy. When I bought my bracket it came with all the screws I needed to put it on this housing and screw it to the wall.

There is no filter that comes with this either. This is fine, and I expected it, but just wanted to let you know. I used a DGD-5005 filter. These are great, and are a 50 micron and 5 micron filter, so it is just like putting 2 filters in with this one housing.

I also found it wasn''t a bad idea to get a SW-3 wrench to open up this housing. It is a plastic handle that makes it a lot easier to unscrew the filter to change it. My advice is DON''T TIGHTEN THE FILTER UP WITH THE FILTER WRENCH. It was VERY hard to open the filter again later and change it when I tightened it with the wrench. Only use the wrench to open it, not tighten it.

Overall a great product, does its just, and I think it should keep lasting me a long time.

Well made and works well. I use the (Point 5) Micron filter. I change the filter every 6 months. I Use a little Vaseline(very little thinned out)around the threads to remove easily. Also apply to the O ring for better seal. The description clearly sates housing only, so purchase your filter separately. If your water source is very dirty, use a pre-filter. I kind of like the Point 6 micron for whole house. IF you are serving two bedrooms the .5 and .6 will work. Make sure you know your GPM. You may have to bump up to 4.5 x 20.

Hope this helps.

This item does NOT come with a filter, filter cost are an additional $20.00 to $25.00, Also the pre-drilled holes for mounting a flange bracket to are NOT tapped (NOT threaded) nor did it come with any bolts to mount to a flange.

Aquios Full House Water Conditioning/Filtration Replacement Cartridge Save 13% Off

Aquios Full House Water Conditioning/Filtration Replacement Cartridge
  • All-in-one full house water conditioning / water filtration system with VOC reduction
  • Commercial grade, eco-friendly descaler that conditions hard water deposits and conditions water
  • 1 Micron carbon block filtration eliminates chlorine taste, odor, and most VOCs
  • Salt-free, requires no maintenance, no electricity, no backflush
  • Compatible with most 20" filter housings

I have owned the Aquios system for almost a year and I am delighted by the performance of this product. My wife had been bugging me for years to install a water softener, but seeing the hassle that family members and friends that have conventional salt-based systems left me less than enthusiastic.

After doing extensive research I decided to give the Aquios unit a try and haven''t looked back since. All the benefits of a traditional water softener plus whole-house filtration and zero maintenance. I just installed my second replacement cartridge (the first one lasted just over 7 months). Replacing the cartridge is as simple as turning the locking ring at the top of the unit to "off", opening some faucets to relieve back pressure, unscrewing the housing and swap the cartridge. Whole process takes less than two minutes.

My water is clear, no lime or scale buildup, clothes are cleaner and the water simply tastes better. Highly recommended.

Update 2/16/2013... the item is listed as "currently unavailable" and Amazon states they don''t know if, or when, that might change. Hope it''s not that because they don''t want you to purchase the filter and use it in a much less expensive housing as mentioned below...

I know this is a product review section but here''s why I didn''t purchase it. I have very hard city water in a rural high desert area where the supply is a 450'' deep aquifer so I wanted to soften the water for all the usual reasons... but especially to save my hot water heater. I didn''t want the salt based units because there''s too much wasted water when they purge; too much salt added to the drinking water; the discharged water isn''t good for my garden, or anything else green, if drained outdoors; and I don''t want to add to the problems with our sewer line by discharging into the city system. That made this type of system sound great... until I did some research. I noticed the replacement filter costs about 70 bucks (plus another 11 for shipping) so that makes the housing for this filter system price out at about 390 bucks (459 minus 69). I don''t see anything here except the housing and a filter and that''s pretty much what all filter systems include. The housing holds the filter and diverts the water either through, or around it when changing the filter, so there''s nothing it does in the actual filtration and/or softening process.

The Product Features for the replacement filter states "Compatible with most 20" filter housings" so I believe it will fit the Pentek 150166 Pentek 20-ST Whole House Water Filter System 150166 which holds a standard 20" x 2.5" filter... which is exactly the filter size for this unit... for about 45 bucks and it has a valve built into it. I''m no scientist but filters pretty much remove particles from the water (which reduces the scaling in pipes and appliances) so I went with the Culligan HF360-A Culligan HF-360A Whole House Sediment Filter Clear Housing with P5, 5 Micron Poly Spun Sediment Filter Cartridge Included and the P5-D Culligan P5-D Level 4 5 Micron Sediment Filtration 2 Pack Replacement Cartridges 5-micron filters and I''m at about 50 bucks total if I replace a filter every month. The P5-D''s are 10" x 4.5" wide so they have about the same surface area as a 20" x 2.5" wide filter. I can''t comment on what the Aquios is able to accomplish but if it''s a cartridge holder (also with a built in valve) and a filter what could possibly make the housing alone worth nearly 400 bucks? Even if my Culligan (and there are many choices for a housing that start at around 15 bucks) doesn''t do as much as it should I can go with another type of filter or put two in tandem.

Again, I''m not scientist, but based on what I have read the process of softening water is done by bonding ions (such as exchanging hardness ions for sodium) like in a salt based system or just filtering as much out as possible. If you use a filter then you are removing particulates from the water and storing them in the filter membrane for disposal and without ionization it seems to "soften" the water by removing the minerals. That said, the Aquios filter may be great but at 1-micron isn''t it also removing very fine particles and, if so, why wouldn''t another filter much less in price do the same in a housing that costs much less? Also, at 1-micron it seems that it would clog fast in very hard water... but that''s just my opinion based on what happens with my Reverse Osmosis system. Anyway, I couldn''t justify the price of a water system with such a price disparity between the housing and the filter. Since I can''t accurately rate the item that I never purchased I''ll give it 4 stars (minus 1 for price) because I believe what others have said about it and the Aquios Full House Water Softener and Filter System Aquios Full House Water Softener and Filter System but before you buy either ask yourself if the hunk of plastic that holds these filters is really worth the price. I only posted this because of the questions it raised for me. If my choice doesn''t work I''ll buy the Aquios filter & Pentek housing for a total of about 125 bucks at the pricing this date.

Keurig Single Serve Coffee and Tea Brewing System Select B77

Keurig Single Serve Coffee and Tea Brewing System Select B77While it worked, it was a great machine. The coffee was great and so was the hot chocolate. Very convenient for the whole family. I even found K-cups at my local Stop and Shop grocery store for only 5.99 for a box of 12.

I received this for Christmas and it stopped working on New Year''s day. Machine rumbles displaying "Not Ready" then shuts off. After keeping it powered off for about an hour it started working again, but then konked out, once again, mid brew. I wrote to customer service on Keurig''s website and didn''t get a reply after 5 days, so I called their 866 number.

After waiting on hold for approx. an hour for a technician, I was told that I was not allowed to wait any longer on hold and that they would call me back after 24 to 48 hours. The person I spoke to said that they have had an influx of calls with this problem since Christmas. Must be a bad batch that went out. I was also told that if they had replied by email, they would have told me to call, so don''t waste your time with email.

I purchased the machine from Costco, but no longer have the box, so I don''t know if I can return to them. If I am not able to get any satisfaction from Keurig, I will try going back to Costco. I will update this review with the final status of this problem.

1/10/10 update: I had to wait 3 days for a technician to call me back. The technician told me to use a paper clip and make sure the top and bottom spouts were clear and we ran through several hot water cycles on different cup settings.

I don''t know if this ''fixed'' the problem because at that point it had been working again. The tech. said that the hot cocoa cups could clog the spouts (although I do run a hot water cycle after each hot cocoa cup is ''brewed''). She also said there may be a problem with the separate filter that allows me to use my own coffee as opposed to their K-Cups. After her call, I stopped using the hot cocoa and the separate filter and so far have not had any problems.

1/26/10 updateThe machine started shutting off yet again. I contacted customer service and they promptly told me that they would send me a new machine. The new machine is working perfectly (so far) and the "motor" definitely sounds different. I am hopeful. I had to send them a part from the old machine within 30 days in order to not be charged for the new machine.

When it works, this really is a great machine and so convenient. I hope I got a good one this time around.

Update 11/2011 The machine has been working really well, but stopped working in November, almost 2 years later. Out of warantee, but Keurig still replaced the machine at no cost to me :) Very happy with their customer service, and still loving my machine.

I too loved the unit... while it worked. Went through two units, both ended up being returned to Costco after repeatedly shutting off. I want to buy another Keurig since these things are great when they work, but am a little gun shy now.

I will wait and see if they get these straightened out. Don''t even bother rolling the dice on this one... it''s not a great deal if it doesn''t work!!!

Definitely a Keurig design issue. I am on #3 and about to return this one too. The problem I have had with the machine is the constant turning off and unable to make 2 cups in a row. On this machine if I re-seat the water dispenser after each cup it will keep working. I just don''t want to go through this exercise any more. I love the K-cup idea and the coffee is good. This machine is the pits.

Like the other reviewers, I bought my B77 from Costco. It makes great coffee and we loved it. That is we loved it for the month it worked. Played phone tag with Keurig with their reps untill they finally decided to send us a new one. We''ll see how the new one works. I would recommend the Keurig as a coffee maker, just don''t buy the B77.

Austin Air HealthMate Jr PLUS Air Cleaner

Austin Air HealthMate Jr PLUS Air Cleaner, SilverI like its simple design and low maintenence. Although I read several reviews that said it was too noisy, it doesn''t keep our one year old son awake at night and it runs on high only four feet away from his crib.

First off, I have a light case of asthma and allergies. I noticed that by breathing is better in the morning when the purifier is used the previous day. I have this hooked up to a timer and let it run for 2 hours a day on the highest setting. Reasons for getting this was because the filters last a long time and remove harmful gases.

These 5 micron filters arrived quickly and they are just what I expected. They fit inside the standard whole-house filter cover as they should. My covers are clear so after installing a new filter I can see how well they trap sediment. My water first passes through a 10 micron filter which allows me to see that the 5 micron units are trapping the finer particles.

These appear to be doing a FINE job of it.

The product comes basically as you see it. It is equivalent to the same items you can pick up locally. They are high quality and as long as you follow the directions on your filter they will do well.

Metal Wrench AP2

Metal Wrench AP2If you have an aqua-pure under the sink water filter, you need this wrench. I''ve had the plumber to my house on several occasions to "fix" our aqua pure, usually because we can''t get the housing to unscrew. This giant wrench takes it right off and it has a helpful guide on which way to try to turn the housing. Definitely worth the money!

Pondmaster 2002 In Pond Skimmer and Filter System Save 30% Off

Pondmaster 2002 In Pond Skimmer and Filter SystemHave tried several DIY options and totally gave up. Came across this bargain and took advantage of it. Initially it did not work as expected. Upon reading the manual the error was corrected and has worked great since then. two thumbs up. It works. Critical factor is pump volume. Recommended 1800gph and up is on the dot.

The device is well constructed and easy to assemble. It is not clear, however, that you need at least 12" water depth to use this at all. With some minor modification (i.e. cut the basket from 6" to 4") I was able to used this in a 14" deep water feature. Would have like to know this ahead of time.

I have been using htis skimmer for about 1 1/2 years. It works well, but would prefer something that is even bigger. Cleaning the filter sometimes can be a pain. It is pretty sturdy. No cracks in mine yet. Suggest you get 2 or 3 sets of filters so you can quickly change them out and then rinse out the old one and use again. I also added a steel wire to the basket to make a handle which makes it easier to pick up with my reacher (grabber).

I have owned this filter for a month and I am very happy with it. The first benefit I noticed was the missing smell of chemicals as I showered. I was always aware of the smell, but I never realized how heavy the smell was until it was gone. It''s undeniable that the air smells...clean. The next few days I noticed my skin wasn''t dry anymore, and I didn''t have to apply lotion. After a week, my hair was much softer, and my itchy scalp was gone, gone, gone. So far, I''m a believer in this product.

If I was going to name one con, it''s that the water pressure was affected a bit. However, for me, the pros outweigh this one con. I''d rather have the softer skin, and cleaner air than maximum water pressure.

I love this product for its looks and for what it does.

It seems to clear the chlorine smell along with the resin of the water softener.

My only gripe is that the flow is reduced just enough to tick me and my wife off.

I have been suffering from a nasty skin itch for over a year and I thought this might help eliminate some of the factors in my water.

I am glad I bought this product and you can clearly tell the different when the filter is off. I highly recommend this product for handheld shower users with HIGH water pressure/flow only. If you have poor flow like I do, you might want to go for a different filter.

This product works ok. It last me about a month before I need to change the filter, but the problem with this product is, I use a filter because I have a lot of minerals in our water and turns my hair orange. Excellent quality, easy to use. After researching all the available products, I decided that this is the best system available (other than a central filter) for getting into a bathtub that doesn''t smell like a chlorinated pool. The filtered water is so much better for my skin and hair.
