My wife and I drink more water now. It even tastes better--or rather, you can notice the lack of metals and chemicals. We are super happy that we got this and we recommend this to everyone.

My only quibble with it is that because of the positioning of the spout (it''s not at the very bottom), not all of the filtered water can pour through the spout. So there is always some water left over. However, this just gets mixed in with the filtered water eventually.

It took about 2 days for setup and priming. There is just 2 of us using this, and we have to refill it every other day. It works out perfect.

HINT: we bought a little rolling stand/cart which it sits on top. When we need to fill it, we just roll it over to the sink. Our facet has a pullout spray nozzle which can extend and reach the Berkey. Super easy to fill and no mess.

I have been researching Big Berkey water systems for some time before I decided to make the purchase since it was so pricey but the bottle water investment was getting ridiculous. I refused to drink tap water since finding out what is actually in our water supply (arsenic,sodium flouride,heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, uranium, etc.)you can look it up in your home town and see the levels of it through the EPA website.

The Big Berkey is just amazing not only does it purify amazingly but the taste beats any bottled water you can buy and im very picky with bottled water. Its so satisfying to know that know matter how compromised my tap water becomes I will always have the cleanest best tasting water anywhere.I urge everyone to do your own research and you will see for yourself how amazing this product is, the Red Cross and the World Health organization use Big Berkeys. Make sure you get the one with 2 flouride filters and do a google search on sodium flouride you will see it causes cancer, bone disease, nerve damage and a host of other dangerous side effects. Flouride is the main reason i got this unit since it is added to the water supply statewide and no I do not work for Big Berkey im just excited that im not paying $80 a month for water that isn''t even as good as this!

I purchased this unit about 2 months ago. We have been using it every day and it has been great! The first batch or 2 had a bit of a chalky taste but that may have been our error (not priming it well enough or not filling it properly). Since then I always fill it to the top and it has tasted wonderful! We even did the food coloring test and the water came out clear, as promised.

Other than filling it up to the top the only advice I would give is to wait until it just drips out before re-filling. You can''t see how much water is left, so if you fill it to the top and the bottom chamber still has a lot of water in it, it can overflow. Though, the overflowing really was just a small puddle from it dripping on my counter, so you won''t get a sudden flood. Oh, and you do have to put it at the edge of a counter, otherwise your cup won''t fit under the spout.

I love that I don''t have to worry about plastic, recalled water, bacteria or the environmental impact of the plastic bottles or the process in which the water is collected :) And it tastes wonderful! I recommend it to everyone I know.

After calling the shipper, I was assured that the units were virtually identical and that the situation in Haiti had impacted the available units. I actually don''t have the model that is this big, Ihave a smaller one , but the filter elements are the same which is the best part about this. Do your own research and find out that the purification is excellent in these filters. I also have the plastic model, which i like because i can see through it and the base gives it the height to put cups,pans etc. under it , where the stainless does not have that so i found a item that fits underneath. I did not buy the "clear glass tube" so you can see the water level as it is extra cost, and i admit that I have had water over flow onto my counter and floor. Now i am more aware and give it a check. I really love the ''taste" of the water by using these. i live off of city water, so I dont deal with flouride and such, but i do deal e-coli and other natural stream, river ,creek contaminants. No one has ever gotten sick from water and I have used these for more than six years. I think it''s a great investment and will save you from buying bottled water over and over. Be careful when cleaning the filters (dont drop in sink, DONT use bleach) clean with scrubber type sponge (not metal)...anyway, I''m switching to the stainless as i am making a commitment to have less plastic in our family. Just to start, I''m extremely cynical and I don''t subscribe to the idea that just because it''s expensive makes it the best. I must admit, this is the best cup of coffee I have ever made. I just received this coffee maker (via Zappos,) as Amazon isn''t shipping direct yet. I''ve been drinking my coffee virtually the same way for 25 years, so my test this morning contained the same coffee, measurements, and ingredients I have always used. I went through the steps as directed by Viking, and the end result was a hotter, deeper, zero-bitter cup of amazing coffee.

*Side Note: Even though this coffee maker comes with a filter, always use filtered water. We have HIGH mineral content water, so this is something we have always used anyway. Viking states, that not doing so with this kind of water, will void the warranty. The coffee maker will tell you when it''s time to "de-calcify" (this may or may not occur when using filtered water).

There WILL be a bit of a time-consuming (roughly 30-40 minutes) initial process you WILL need to invest in so don''t intend on having that first cup if you are pressed for time. There is an initial "priming" (using roughly 2 cups of water), then a "first 10-cup brew" of just water only (for cleaning purposes). After that, you''re ready for clock set-up, auto programming, and finally time to brew! I used the reusable filter that comes with it instead of the usual non-bleached disposable filters, and I have nothing negative to say about it.

As far as our usual process, we use our favorite whole-bean coffee and grind it in a burr grinder at the finest setting.

Is it worth $300.00? If the flavor, temperature, and dependability of the machine all hold up, it will be a resounding yes. I will update this review over time to let you know for sure.

SIX-WEEK UPDATE: Still impressed, no regrets! Overflowed once (my fault) I filled the water tank over the fill line when I selected the 12-cup serving. If I had one criticism, it would be how slowly it pours when opened to the "o" mark. I''m assuming Viking made it an intentional feature in order to keep the remaining coffee hot which it does. Obviously, one can take the lid completely off to remedy that.

**FLASHING "dcl": So it finally said it was time to decalcify. Easy process, but allow yourself ~20 minutes to do this. The only thing that wasn''t covered in my instruction book was how to get the "dcl" to quit flashing after the process was done. It''s not automatically detected YOU NEED TO PRESS THE "ON" BUTTON, THEN HOLD DOWN THE "BREW" BUTTON (NOT SIMULTANEOUSLY) FOR A FEW SECONDS TO CLEAR IT. Hopefully newer packaged instructions will show this. Still no regrets! **Don''t forget to replace the filter in the reservoir.**

You''d expect a bit more for $300 carafe leaks everywhere when you pour the coffee. Who the heck tested this product at Viking??? Do not buy looks pretty But doesn''t pour correctly!!!!

That was my original review. After speaking to Viking I learned that I had to keep it on the open (o) position and not between the locked and open, while pouring, as their directions state. Works GREAT no more leaks and it''s such a great looking coffee machine! They just need to correct their directions.

The only good thing that I can say about this machine is that is brews a hot pot of coffee. Other than that, it has been a huge disapointment. While the carafe is wrapped in a stainless strip, the balance of the unit is made of the sort of plastic and in a similar design as a $30-$60 machine. At half the price this machine would be over-valued

Some features that have been particularly irksome:

1.) The filter is ill-fitting and surely cannot actually filter as the water easily by-passes the filer

2.) The machine is noisy it emits a pulsing / grinding noise every 10 seconds while brewing

3.) The carafe does not fit well under the spring-loaded brewing area

4.) The electronics (at least on the machine I''ve purchased) are fickle and every morning I have to run through a combination of unplug, plug back in, hit program, specify number of cups, on-off, etc to try to get the thing to go to work.

This coffee maker may have the Viking name plate but do not expect it to be anything close to the quality of your Viking stove or fridge.

We started looking for a reliable, high-quality coffee maker after our Krups XP2070 failed us (will not power on) after two years, and our Krups KM7000 grind-n-brew after 13 months (leaked, shipped in for repair, then jammed). We were willing to spend a little more money for a higher quality, reliable coffee maker this time around.

There seems to be a gap in the market between the lower-end (Cuisinart, Krups, etc) and the high end (>$700), then we stumbled on this Viking 12 cup coffee maker. We know of the Viking brand, but had never owned a Viking product so we weren''t sure if their quality matched their price.

We took the plunge and ordered and received our Viking coffee maker about two weeks ago, so this is an initial impressions review. When it quits working we''ll update this review with our post-mortem thoughts (which we hope won''t be for a long time).

Initial impressions are very good. It looks nice and feels high quality the fit and finish matches our expectations for the Viking brand. The front and carafe are stainless steel, and the sides are a high-quality metallic looking plastic. Initial priming was quick and easy. We like the side loading water canister and coffee filter since our old coffee makers were filled from the top and we had to pull them out from under our kitchen cabinet everyday to fill them. It''s not loud, but you will hear a couple of water pump sounds during its brew cycle. The carafe doesn''t spill, which surprised us because all of the Krups glass carafes we''ve owned, invariably spilled (almost by design..grr) it''s amazing how nice a non-spilling carafe is! :) The carafe is insulated and keeps coffee steaming hot for hours -it''s still drinkable warm in mid-afternoon.

The water is hot and the brew is good. Yum. It took about 4 days to dial in the correct coffee strength (tip: use the # of cups to control the amount of coffee you make, not the amount of water you add to the water canister. )

The only improvement we can think of is a chime at the end of the brew cycle to let us know the coffee is ready.

It''s not feature packed, but after our previous experiences we were looking for less features in exchange for good product design, quality and reliability. Overall we are very happy with our new Viking coffee maker and at this point enthusiastically recommend it.

When I first started using the product it seem to take long to brew. Within two weeks the product failed completely. Because it was used, regarless of how little, it could not be returned to AMazon. They did not care.

A call to Viking met with rude people; however, one person promised a complete new coffe maker, but it would take 6-weeks. I agreed to wait. Surprise, surprise a partial unit arrived in two weeks. When I opened the box, it was clear this unit had been used:Viking did not even try to clean it or to buff out the scratches and dents before sending it me. Someone else had returned a damaged unit. And it just was sent to me. Follow-on calls to Viking are all met with not my problem call this number (I now have 7 different 800 for Viking in the and out of the US). Finally after hours on the phone, I got someone to listen. Send many detailed pictures which got me a third unit that did not work.

Unless you have money to toss away, do not purchase this unit.

I was all set to pick up a similar Pur model when this caught my eye at Wal-Mart. I wasn''t even aware that DuPont made water filtration products, but after reading the fine print on the box, I decided to give it a try. It has a 60 day money back guarantee, plus a 5 year warranty. If, like me, you are carefully reviewing every single line of text on the box, you may notice it seems to filter less contaminants than other products. Open the box and read the manual, however, and you''ll see that it provides the same level of filtration. Why they chose not to advertise this more prominently, I don''t know.

It''s a fairly sturdy unit, but still plastic. It comes with three different colored caps (black, white, and chrome), although you''re stuck with chrome for the base. The included filter is good for 100 gallons, which is standard. 200 gallon models are available. Also of note, the replacement filters for DuPont models are much cheaper than Pur or Brita.

After the initial 5 minute priming, where (I assume) the activated carbon is being wetted, and any loose particles are flushed out, I filled a glass with filtered water, and one with unfiltered. Now, our tap water in CT isn''t horrible. It does have a rather sharp chlorine aftertaste, though, which was my main reason for getting a filter. Immediately I could see that the filtered water was clearer. I never thought the tap water was murky until I saw the difference. I then gave them both to my wife to try, without telling her which was which. She said the filtered water definitely tasted better, which I agreed with.

DuPont says they don''t need to use minerals to enhance the taste of their water; that their filtration system is adequate. Pur, if you''ve noticed, touts their minerals as a feature of their water filters. So does it matter? Well, the best tasting water I''ve ever had was country well water, when I lived in Nebraska. Full of minerals, and with a clean, sweet taste. DuPont''s filter makes city water taste like it''s fresh from a pure spring. Minerals or not, it seems to have a sweeter taste, and is definitely devoid of any chlorine or harsh chemical overtones.

The only installation issue I had was leaking from where it attaches to the faucet. However, the included roll of plumber''s tape and a tighter grip solved that problem. The tape was a nice touch, I thought. They also include a wide variety of adapters, should your faucet head have some strange threading. The instructions are very clear on how to assemble and install this product, and barring any leaks, you''ll be up and running in just a few minutes.

The only downside to this product is a lack of any sort of filter life indication. Even Pur''s cheaper models have a colored bar that slowly changes to red to indicate the end of the filter''s life. DuPont does sell a more expensive model (FM350CH Deluxe) with a digital counter to indicate gallons filtered, but with this, you''re on your own. Pur says a 100 gallon filter is good for roughly 3 months with average water usage, so I''d go from there.

All in all, a solid product for a great price. Highly recommended.

The water in our area smells strongly of chlorine out of the faucet. Needless to say, we use a water filter attachment on our sink. We previously had the Pur model that you turn, and it cracked and leaks spouted out of the side. We replaced it because we had bought the filter replacements in bulk, and the same thing happened to the second one. The same thing happened to our in-laws'' Pur also.

We finally replaced the Pur model with this DuPont, and have been very satisfied. As expected, the water tasts great and does not smell of chlorine when filtered through the DuPont. It doesn''t leak, works great, tasts great, A+!!

In an effort to save time and money by not going to the fill-your-own-gallon machines, my husband purchased this for our family. It''s a beautiful faucet with a chrome finish. The taste is noticeably better. And it is rather inexpensive compared to Brita and Pur.

The chrome finish does flake off all over the placeincluding in your water. Be careful of that. I''m sure it''s not good to ingest.

Another problem we noticed as the filter got close to 100 gallons it started counting wrong. I wondered, "Are we really going through that many gallons in such a short time?" So I watched it. As I started filling up a 2 qt. pitcher (1/2 gallon), it clicked up to the next number. That''s alright. It may have been close to switching. But then before I got 2 quarts filled up it counted another gallon.

I experimented with a 12 ounce drinking cup. I filled it up. No change. I drank it. Good water! Then I filled it again and it counted another gallon.

My hope is that when it gets to 200 on the counter it still filters the water.

Summary: The chrome finish flakes off. The counter is inaccurate. The water tastes great!

The filter cartridge that goes in this unit is a defective product prone to premature rupturing, likely due to a manufacturing/design defect. The bottom seam/weld of the cartridge is very weak and will not last the 100 or 200 gallons of life it''s rated for. I have gone through three FMC300 cartridges (rated for 200 gallons) but in fact lasted less than 50 gallons of use, rendering them useless. The first sign of trouble is usually a slow drip from somewhere around filter unit; eventually it deteriorates into a gushing fountain.

Dupont Customer Service is aware of the problem with the cartridge. If you call to ask for a replacement of a leaky filter unit they will demand a dated sales receipt, etc. But if you tell them you have a defective, ruptured cartridge, they will send you a replacement, no questions asked. Obviously, they know the FMC300 cartridge is a defective product.

This filter is complete garbage. That nice chrome finish you see on the box is actually cheap paint that will start to flake off and get into your water. I assume it''s cheap Chinese silver paint that''s full of the lead you''re trying to avoid with the filter.

It snapped apart when I was replacing the filter for about the third time. The whole thing is cheap plastic. It also leaks. Stay away from this one.

The seller here simple ignored all my contacts. The manufacturer replied the first email just to say that they are not affiliated with any reseller.

the plastic in the spigot simply ripped away from the side-way force of turning the lever. the plastic had bubbles in it. really awful workmanship.

i''m now giving up on contacting the seller or manufacturer and am going to buy a replacement spigot.

Avoid. Pay a little more for another brand.

I installed 3 OE Samsung filters previously, this one went in the same way, but the water pressure in my fridge went very high...so high that the water dispenser on the front was dripping water down the front door after i stopped the dispenser. I think it may have to do with the rubber O-rings, they are a little lighter weight. I did not try to return the other 2 out of the 3 pack, as it would be "tampered with" i didn''t even try to contact the seller. I''ll just buy the Samsung filter next time.

Krups KM4065 12-Cup Stainless-Steel Coffeemaker

This review is for the Krups KM 4065 coffeemaker. I believe this is the first of a new line of coffeemakers designed Bjorn Dahlstrom. At the moment, this coffeemaker is not on the Krups website and there is little information available on the web. I''ve only had it for a couple of days so here are my initial thoughts.

Pros:

1. Looks fantastic

2. Seems reasonably well built and the top door opens and closes smoothly

3. This has a different water gauge from the FM series and it works well and is easy to read (no bubbles).

4. I''ve filled the reservoir from both a Brita pitcher and from the included carafe without spillage. (That said the fill area is at the back near the door hinge)

5. Uses #4 Filters

6. Makes a great cup of coffee

7. The included carafe pours well

Cons:

1. Pricey for a unit without a thermal carafe

2. Programming is non-intuitive and a little frustrating

3. Manual could be a lot better

4. Like most stainless steel appliances, fingerprints may be an issue if you are not careful

5. Durability of main button to open top lid remains to be determined

6. Carafe seems a little light and the cover flimsy

Overall, I am very pleased with this beautiful coffeemaker. It looks like the design changes have addressed the water gauge issue with the FM series and so far I''ve had no leaks. The carafe works well so coffee spillage is not a problem and most importantly my initial experience is that this machine makes good coffee.

I have deducted one star due to the fact I''ve only had it 2 days and can''t attest to the long-term durability of the unit and it is a little pricey compared to competing units.

First disclosure, we take our coffee very seriously. Our household has two professionals with different work schedules that run all seven days of the week. We grind our imported coffee right before use and like our coffee strong, not bitter. A limitation we have is that the counter that is available for a coffee maker only has 15inches of clearance. The coffee maker we replaced is the KitchenAid KCM5340B which did not hold enough coffee for our taste due to a flat bottom filter. This Krups unit is the first coffee maker we found that is less than 15inches high but still offers a #4 cone coffee filter and 12-cup capacity. With regular and strong coffee settings able to be programmed into two auto brew settings; this coffeemaker meets the needs of our household that can average 6hrs between two coffee times needed daily.

Operations is smooth, coffee filter easily holds 12 scoops of coffee without grounds overflowing (The KitchenAid had grounds overflowing into the coffee with just 10 scoops for a 14cup pot.)into the coffee. Strong coffee setting makes excellent coffee without a bitter after taste. Coffee temperature is excellent with no bitterness after 2-3hours on the warmer. We are very happy with this product.

I got this coffeemaker from Wms Sonoma, who JUST started carrying it. I was excited b/c I like Krups machines and I wanted a glass carafe so I can see how much coffee I have left! My (fairly new) Cuisinart coffee pot recently fried itself, so I am avoiding those out of retaliation (I loved that one and am so mad it died!).

Here is what I discovered with this coffee maker...it looks very cool indeed. I like the buttons and display. The "aroma" button can be used to adjust for brewing a smaller pot (1/2 pot or less). The coffee I brewed was pretty strong, using the recommended number of scoops. I had to run about 3 cycles of water through it before using it to get rid of the plastic/electrical smell inside of the pot. (Ew.)

Here is the major drawback about this otherwise cool product...it is LOUD! And I mean L-O-U-D loud! I kept thinking it was going to blow flames out of the bottom and take off like a rocket. So, even though it had all of the features I was looking for in a coffeemaker, I am returning it. My kitchen is already so loud and chaotic in the morning with small kids running around and yapping, that there is no way I can take this kind of noise...I will lose my mind!

But, hey, if you don''t mind excessively loud slurpy brewing sounds (and robust steam-release sounds) then you should give it a try. This machine''s noises may not bother everyone...or maybe mine was excessive...but I just thought some readers out there might like to know.

I have only had this unit for a couple of days but my initial usage has been very favorable. I have traditionally liked Krups coffee makers but always thought that the FM series was pretty lame. This is a definite upgrade. I agree with the previous reviewer in that the unit looks great and is well built. The water gauge is under the lid and looks like an LED meter, I like it. However I did not find the programming difficult at all and I also like the "dual start times" for auto brewing. One for the week and another for the weekend (if you get up later on the weekend)

What I''m ambivalent about is the lid to open the top of the unit (to pour in the water and the coffee). It opens slowly and automatically when you push the "open" button and is kind of cool but...my fear is that this could present a long term issue, but right now this is just a worry. I also would prefer if the lid to the carafe was removable for cleaning, it''s hinged to the carafe. But this is a minor complaint.

I am very pleased with the coffeemaker. It really is a nice design, looks great and makes first rate coffee. I give it five stars so far, if things change I''ll ammend my review.

My Krups ProAroma made it''s last cup of coffee with a big gurgle and sigh. Not a pretty picture for anyone who has dealt with me before my first cup of coffee in the morning.

I knew I wanted another Krups, and this new beauty caught my eye. But would it live up to my demanding coffee-maker standards?

This is a fantastic machine! Not only is it beautiful, but it makes the best coffee I have ever had at home, and possibly anywhere else. Since all drip machines basically do the same thing, heat water and drop it over your coffee, perhaps it''s the water delivery system that makes it so smooth tasting.

Someone said it''s very noisy...it is not.

Someone said when pouring from the carafe the steam can burn your fingers...not if you''re just holding the handle and don''t place your finger near the tab on the lid.

Someone said it''s hard to fill because the area where you pour in the water is small...I use a glass wine carafe and have no problem.

Someone said their''s leaked overnight...mine doesn''t.

The lid on the carafe is not easily removed and the instruction booklet says they recommend hand washing, even though the video on Krups website shows the lid being separated from the carafe and being placed in the dishwasher. I phoned Krups and I think they will be revising the video. If that is the worst problem I can live with it.

The procedure to set the different functions are a little vague. I''m sure you will figure out that pressing the Program button multiple times takes you to the various options. Press it three times to set the Auto-Off feature. It is preset at 1-hour which is probably all you want on any machine unless you like the smell of burnt coffee.

Bottom line, I love this machine! So I bid a fond adieu to my ProAroma with a smile as I savor what good coffee should taste like.

Good:

The PH110 is accurate and cheap. I am able to get repeatable flavor and texture when I make cheese, because I can hit all my markers.

Bad:

The PH110 requires fiddling every time I want to use it. It requires at least one calibration when I take it out of the cabinet. Then if I wait more than a couple of hours between uses, it requires another calibration. Calibration isn''t difficult, but it can get pricy because you have to buy pouches of calibration solution. I put the solution in a tupperware bowl and reuse it for a day or two.

Ugly:

A couple of times, I had to remove the batteries to reset it because it locked up during a calibration.

We had a horrible sewer gas odor coming into our office because the sewer vent is very close to our rooftop A/C unit. I looked on Amazon for a solution, and came across the Sweetfilter. Based on the reviews, I ordered it immediately, and I installed it on my sewer vent pipe as soon as I received it. I am amazed at how quickly the smell disappeared completely! Literally the office smelled like a sewer in the morning, I installed this at lunchtime, opened the doors to my office to air it out, kicked the A/C back on, and NO SMELL! I would seriously rate this over 5 stars if I could!
