For the most part, we were pleased with this RO faucet. We like that the faucet head itself swivels. It took us far longer to install than we had anticipated, but that is no fault of the RO faucet. The faucet itself was easy enough to install, but then we had to connect it to the RO filter''s existing line, and this required a trip to Home Depot, since the faucet and it''s tubing did not come with a connection device. While the color is called Antique Bronze, in reality, it does not match with other company''s oil rubbed or antique bronze fixtures. It looks far more like antique COPPER. Would I buy it all over again? Probably. If our local Home Depot or Lowe''s, or even our local plumbing supply store had carried them in stock, then I would have looked at the coloring, and bought one from them instead. After traveling to five stores, and calling one on the phone, our last option was to purchase one on line.

Alive Water 7-Plate Water Ionizer

I love this product and feel like it was a great value. One of my good friends has a Kangen Water Ionizer ($4700) which she loves -and another friend has the Athena ($2,100) that he likes. I looked around mainly to save some money .... I don''t think I would have purchased an ionizer at $4,000.

I read the info on their website and also called to ask questions about the Company. Appears they simply looked at the market, other ionizers available, and decided to design a better ionizer by taking the best of what was out there. They also added a few things like safe plastics and ETL rating which they say is the best.

Searching and comparing online I didn''t find one as good for less than $2,000 in my research. So far so good.

Here''s my review:

Pros:

1) Setup Easy. The videos which come from Alive Air were very helpful and saved time (reading the manual, etc.). The fact that they thought of this said something about this company

2) Operations control panel was easy to read

3) Price makes me wonder if most units on the market are basically the same.

4) The fact that they thought to use FDA safe plastics and get ETL rating

5) Unlike the Kangen you can put it undersink with an optional faucet. I don''t know how hard it is but they have video instructions.).

Con''s:

1) The Kangen has a nicer looking faucet attachment which clamps on/off fast

2) The music which goes on when the unit is being "auto-cleaned" is corny

3) The pH test kit which came with it shows it''s working fine to change pH.

4) I don''t know if any of the filters, in any water ionizer, do enough purification to use tap water safely. They recommended a 3 stage additional filter for anyone using a water ionizer

I use the alkaline water for my health, my plants and for cooking. I like it works great and I recommend it.

I did a lot of research on Ionizers before settling on this one. I did not want to pay several thousand for an Ionizer. I did hire a plumber to hook it all up as I am old and did not feel like I could do it properly and it took him less than an hour. It has worked flawlessly and has different settings for beginning drink water, everyday drinking water, water for coffee and tea, and cooking water. It lets you know when to backwash. I use the standard filter but there is a better one for a lot more money, if you think there might be bacteria in the water source. The only reason I did not give it a 5 star review is that I do not love objects.

My husband had been wanting a water ionizer for a long time but we couldn''t afford the thousands of dollars that most sell for. When we were doing more research on them and comparing prices along with specific details for each product, we stumbled upon the Alive Air Purifier and Ionizer website.

PROS: What sold us was not only the initial price but also the cost to replace the filters. Alive''s are around $40 each compared to the $100 or more for other brands. Also, that it is completely self cleaning. It does a rinse at the end of each use and a self cleaning process evey so many liters of water. When we received it, we also checked the water output on each setting with Alkaline litmus paper just to be sure that it was changing the alklinity as it should. Every setting tested right in the range that it stated. We also purchased the under the sink converter, which I think is nice because I don''t like a lot of things sitting out on my counter.

CONS: The only thing I would warn is that if you have the machine under the counter, you need to look at it each time before use it and make sure that it is not on the self cleaning status. It plays music when it is on the cleaning cycle, but it''s hard to hear when under the counter. It''s easy to see the difference. The machine should be lit up bright blue. If it''s time for the cleaning mode, it will be lit up bright red. Otherwise, if you don''t check it, you could get cleaning water instead of the alkaline you were hoping for.

This Summer my husbands cousin came to visit from Idaho for a few months. She brought her Kangen machine and made water for me during those months. I just finished doing chemo therapy and had broken my wrist, taboot. She gave me lots of info about the water and told me to use the internet to see if there was a machine I could afford. Well, when she left I knew within a week that I did not feel nearly as good as I had been feeling. That convinced me I needed a machine, so I started looking. This machine seemed to me to be the one that I could afford and bring me and my family back to health.

The Alive Ionizer is as good, if not better than the Kangen machine she had and paid $3,000 for. I took it to Baja Mexico with me and it was wonderful. We have to use purified water there so this was a much better idea.

I have been back on the ionized water for a month now and really feel energized. The water fills me up (keeps me from over eating sweets) and helps me to get my immune system going again. The good folks at Zero Water changed the style of their filters. Mine shipped with a note inside that says they look different, but are improved and will fit. I happen to have the counter top dispenser that takes two filters. Inside of the fill area, there are two domes that screen out anything big and direct the water to the inside of the filter. The new filters do not have the same recess depth as the old filters and in order to use them, one must disassemble these domes and remove them. Haven''t noticed any degradation in performance yet, but would have been nice not to have to disassemble my unit to use the "new and improved" filters.

Jura-Capresso 13187 Impressa E8 Super-Automatic Espresso Machine

I have to say, I *love* my E8! I tried one at a store and, after a lot of research, settled on Jura Capresso because of the cleaning cycle feature (most others you have to remove the "brew group" once a week or so and manually clean it I was *so* not going to do that!). I settled on the E8 versus other JC''s because of the price and the features... the higher-end models'' extra features (none of which directly affect the quality of a single cup) were worth the additional cost, especially since I live alone.

I''ve no complaint about the temperature of the coffee, as long as I pre-heat my cup. A little hot water out of the spiget does the trick. I use a decent coffee bean from a local store and have excellent results. I did have to play around with the grind settings, but I expected that.

The frother (I don''t have the fancy add-on) does a better-than-decent job of frothing/foaming milk; however, it''s not as good as a coffee-house machine wielded by a pro, with perfect-temperature milk and a cold pitcher. However, it works much better than any home-based espresso machine I''ve encountered, and much better than what one often gets from a disaffected coffee counter person.

The flavor is rich and full like cafe crema or espresso ought to be. While, again, a true barista with a true pro machine and the best beans can indeed produce a better cup, this is far better than what I typically get in a high-end coffee shop. That''s part of what originally sold me on it I found out the store that I sampled it at used "cheap supermarket beans" (as they put it).

One does have to be careful with the beans; if they''re oily, they''ll cling to each other and not make their way down the hopper. The solution? Stick your finger in the beans and swirl once, or don''t use oily beans (oily doesn''t necessarily mean more flavor). I like the beans I use but they do stick slightly, and a little touch with my finger fixes the ''problem''. The manual, video, web site, and talking chicken that came with the product makes this very clear.

Cleaning is a breeze every couple of days I empty the hopper that catches the pucks (grounds). Once a week or so I rinse out the drip tray. Every once in a while it alerts me that I need to run a cleaning cycle: in goes the tablet and that''s it.

My only complaint and I knew this going in is that for $1000 it ought not be 100% plastic. The spigot that the coffee comes out is plastic, and raises/lowers. I''m always careful, because if something that I have control over is going to break, it''s going to be this piece. More expensive models have metal for this piece, but I couldn''t see adding $500+ dollars for this.

I was originally concerned not having a cup warmer might be an issue. It says it has a passive cup warmer in some of the online literature, but that''s baloney the top doesn''t get any warmer than rooom temperature. However, it is no inconvenience (and I''m pretty lazy) to release some water from the spigot into the cup, and let it sit for a few seconds.

This is just about the best thing ever! I used to go to coffee shops and drop $7 $10 a day. I figure I''ll make that back after costs in about a year. It''s not expensive it''s economical in my book!

OK, this thing ain''t cheap. I mean, how can you ever justify spending $1000 on a coffee maker?? I named mine Miss AnniBirthenTine. She was so expensive, that she was my ''Anni''versary, ''Birth''day, and Val''enTine''s day gift all rolled into one item! That being said, I admit I have a bit of an unhealthy relationship with my coffee maker. I love her. Fine. I said it.

One thing I have noticed is that Miss Anna is smarter than I am. She tells me when to clean her, fill her with water, etc. And, I love that. She''s clean and polite never demanding. Here and there she does some things I am not sure of, but nothing has been serious. For instance, I also experienced what the reviewer who gave one star said intermittent coffee part way through she would just turn off. I did not call customer service, but instead did some troubleshooting on my own. I came to the conclusion that the beans I bought were a bit oily (which is warned against in all the manuals and videos) and were jamming the works. I ran it through a clean cycle with a tablet and she has been a happy coffee maker since.

Miss Anna has been a part of our family since early Jan 2005. I drink Capuccinos every morning and use the hot water a lot during the winter for tea and soup. When I am feeling rather saucy, I even make espresso with half and half. YUM. You would have to rip this thing out of my cold, dead arms to get it away from me. I love Miss Anna. When I am away on vacation, I am sad about the mediocre swill people call coffee that I have to settle for until I return home. As long as I don''t think about the money, I love this thing more than I can describe.

I think I am a bit of a coffee snob. I have had this machine for a few weeks now and it''s going strong! I absolutely love it! I was concerned reading other reviews about Starbucks coffee not working so good in the machine, but the ''espresso'' roast is working fine in my machine and I have had no problems yet.

The crema on this machine is wonderful! We''re making coffee all the time. My guests are in awe of the machine, marveling at how quickly it brews fabulous coffee drinks! I made 6 different drinks the other night in just a few minutes and everyone loved them. It''s great for entertaining.

My only issue so far is finding the right milk to froth. The fat free, lactose free milk that we normally drink doesn''t yield much froth (it''s barely milk to begin with). So, I''m going to try 2% and see how that works.

We have had this machine for over 4 years and it has been great. I''m not kidding when I say its the machine we value most in our house a good cup of coffee is important to us and we couldnt live without it. In fact whenever we are away on a trip its the thing we miss the most.

Anybody who thinks this is expensive should do the math. My wife and I used to go to stabucks every morning and spend $3.75 for a grande latte. If you add it up, thats $2,000 per year. This paid for itself in less than a year and we have had it for four.

It will break and has done so twice over 4 years. But you can send it in and get it repaired for $100 or so. Still a great investment.

Anybody who goes to starbucks would be alot better off (not to mention saving time waiting in line) buying a Jura. Its a no-brainer.

PROS:

CONVENIENCE. There is nothing like coming down in the morning, pressing a button, and having a good coffee, which is freshly ground for you while you wait. The separate boilers allows you to immediately switch from foaming milk to producing espresso.

EASE. My partner and parents (who wouldn''t touch my Gaggia classic because it was too complicated) all use this machine without hesitation.

DURABILITY. After two years, our well-used machine (2-3000 cups) has not needed a repair.

VERSATILITY. The coffee bypass is extremely convenient, given that my partner and I frequently prefer different roasts it is very simple for one of us to grind our own and use the bypass to produce our preferred cup.

ECONOMY. The initial price tag for this machine is high. But when you compare it with the cost of buying 1-2 cappuccinos per day from your local barista...you can quickly see that the machine pays for itself.

CONS:

COFFEE QUALITY: Very very good, but I suspect that the pressures are just not quite high enough to make the coffee of nirvana. Still very good.

FOAM QUALITY: We''ve never been able to produce the perfect foam from this machine, but again the quality is high enough, and the convenience makes it worth it.

REGULAR MAINTENANCE: The machine does require regular (about every 5 wks) cleaning and descaling, using tablets purchased from the manufacturer. It''s a slight inconvenience, but the procedures are easy to follow and take about an hour each.

UPDATE THREE YEARS AFTER PURCHASE: After three years of use, our Jura has started giving us an "Error 8" message and its first major repair, which is to replace a large chunk of the brew group. The repair guy claims that this is a common error for this machine, and is expected to cost us ~$150. We also estimate that we pay about $100/year for cleaning tablets. I still really love this coffee machine (we use is several times every day) but thought that these additional maintenance costs would be useful to see in a review.

Hamilton Beach 48274 Brew Station 6-Cup Coffeemaker Save 29% Off

Ok, in my family, I am the only one who drinks coffee. My wife does not. This coffee maker is perfect for myself. It allows me two full 14oz mugs of coffee without wasting an entire pot on just myself.

Most 10-12 cup coffee makers don''t do a good job of making smaller amounts of coffee for those of us that may have a single coffee drinker family. The coffee is either lukewarm or not strong enough when trying to make a smaller batch. My wife doesn''t like coffee so I am stuck either getting an expensive single K-cup style coffee maker, pod maker or a 4-cup drip brewer. However, thanks to the Hamilton Beach 48274 Brew Station 6-Cup Coffeemaker, I can end my search for the perfect solution.

The Brew Station makes an excellent, piping hot cup of coffee. It is said to be a 6-cup brewer and that may be the case for a regular 5oz mug. But for me, I use a 14oz mug and this brewer makes exactly two full mugs of coffee with none to spare. The coffee maker does an excellent job of keeping the coffee hot until needed, without continuously cooking the coffee or burning it. The programming is easy to use, and the overall design is simple enough once you get used to filling the water reservoir. I immediately ran three brewing cycles of just water once I opened the box and then made my first batch. There was no plastic taste or any other chemical taste to my coffee.

Other reviews have stated their Brew Station leaked, but mine does not. There is a little plastic arm that swings out over the coffee ground basket which dispenses the water. I could see that if this arm was not swung out over the basket, it might leak out the back. Also, the actual dispensing mechanism might be another place for leakage if there are coffee grounds or some object stuck between the valve and gasket so be sure to make sure this area has no coffee grounds in it prior to using. Again, I have not had this problem and don''t anticipate that I will as I am really careful to not get coffee grounds in the coffee reservoir and always make sure the arm is over the brewing basket.

Others have mentioned that 8-12 cup filters don''t fit this maker. The manual does not state which size filter to use either. I have found that 4-cup filters are a perfect fit for this maker and most likely what Hamilton Beach intended. Walmart sells 200 of these filters for around one dollar. If they aren''t on the coffee aisle at Walmart, then check where the coffee makers themselves are sold as Walmart tends to sell things in multiple locations inside a store.

Overall, I am very pleased with this maker especially considering the price.

I bought this coffee maker because I got tired of making single cups in my Senseo. This is a PERFECT size for me...3 full coffee mugs the size I use. LOVE the fact I can use a "program" brew feature.

Maybe I was one of the "lucky" ones...but so far no problems. BUT, just want to address some of the prior complaints.

1) "Leaking"....none for me...just at the end when you flip the lid open to clean out the grounds, etc...simple condensation from the lid...just wipe it up.

2) "Not hot"....coffee was PRETTY darn hot....I CAN say, though, as time goes by, the 2nd and 3rd cup were "hot", just not SUPER hot as the first cup...I programmed mine to be ready EXACTLY when I get up....NOT 30 mins earlier,etc. The process of brewing is REALLY fast, so IF you can''t get the time that close, just have it ready the nite before....don''t use the "auto brew" feature....just turn it on "manually" and it''s done basically in 4-5 mins.

3) "Weak"....I used one "coffee scoop"...which is basically a tablespoon/cup...strong enough...depending on taste...maybe use a "columbian" coffee....the REAL stuff....that''ll put hair on your chest!! LOL Or, a French Roast....JMO

4) "Filter size"...well, I used what I had on hand...the larger sized ones. I made sure the "water arm" was placed properly to dispense the hot water into the middle of the coffee area...no problems. BUT....I can say....using the "taller" filters (for the 12 cup makers) is DEFINITELY a far better practice...I noticed the grounds traveled "up" the filter after I opened the lid when done brewing....using a "shorter" filter (even though "look wise" they are a better "fit") it would DEFINITELY cause the coffee to overflow out the filter. Just make sure when you close the lid with the "taller" filters a) the water "arm" is centered over the grounds in the filter b) when you close the lid, be sure the "excess" filter material is "fitted" around the inside of the filter basket...it WILL obviously "crinkle" on the top when you close the lid since it''s taller.

Seems like a lot of work...but, just common sense stuff...for the money, and compact size, you can''t go wrong !!

Have NEVER done this...but when I bought this, there were quite a few "1 star" posts. I ended up thinking "I must be one of the lucky people who always get things that work".

AND...yessss, I must have too much time on my hands to come back and update my original post....LOL

1) No offense to anyone....BUT...I didn''t bother to read the "directions"....coffee makers are kinda "self explanatory"....or simple enough to figure out...NOT rocket science, IMO. AND...there''s "pictures" on the lid with step by step directions if you forget what to do.....

2) I''ve been using 1/3 cup coffee Folgers STILL the filters that fit my 12 cup maker...STILL just "fold" the excess paper over the edge of the filter basket.....STILL MAKE SURE THE WATER ARM IS MOVED ALL THE WAY OVER THE FILTER BASKET as far as it will go!!!!! Add xtra coffee if it''s "too weak" for you!!

****Yes...the lid stays sligltly "open" does NOT go all the way down. One thing wrong...but I said "deal with it".

Coffee is HOT!! Unless you''re adding enough milk/half-n-half to make something like a "latte"...then, it WILL be cool. I get THREE 10 oz. mugs of coffee out of this machine....YES, I went and measured!! LOL

3) Fill ONLY up to line inside the well for the water....they put them there for a REASON!!! AND...make sure the water goes INTO the well...DO NOT pour it all over the inside....there IS an "opening" for the dispenser device....which can be seen....and water WILL leak out if you pour it all over the place.

4) Be sure the coffee "well" is put TOTALLY back into the maker...NOT tipped...FLAT with the bottom of the space where it goes.

5) AGAIN...when you flip the lid "up" it WILL have water droplets....the water WILL leak out the back as it flows off the lid....it''s called "condensation"....not much to do but to WIPE IT UP!!!

6) Coffee maker IS light weight...coffee maker WILL move as you push the dispenser button to get coffee into your cup ....NOPE, it''s NOT a "Krups" or "Cuisinart"...it doesn''t imply it is.

Now I KNOW I have too much time on my hands this morning...but, after going thru all this, I''m NOT gonna delete my post now....LOL

After reading the negative reviews, I was a little leery of buying this coffee maker, but my daughter bought it for me, and I''m thrilled. I have found that if I''m careful pouring the water in and if I pack the 4-cup filter in the basket before adding the coffee, I have no problem with leaks. The little arm that sprinkles the water over the grounds moves automatically in place when you close the cover, but I just position it myself to be sure. The programming function has worked great so far. The best part is that I no longer have to put the coffee in the microwave after pouring it-it''s nice and hot. I think the dispenser is cool, and I love the fact that there''s no glass coffee pot to play around with. I feel it''s very easy to clean-I just let the pot cool and then soak it for a few minutes and wipe it out. There''s hardly any water left in the reservoir after brewing which is great

A word of caution-the components are made of cheap plastic so you do need to be a little careful putting them in place. Don''t let the cover slam because it won''t close tightly and I think I may have displaced mine a little but it still works fine. It''s a little noisy-makes a soft perking type noise as long as there''s coffee left, so I know when it''s almost empty because the noise stops. There were complaints about it not really making 6 cups, but as far as I know, every coffee maker on the market uses the 6 ounce measure as 1 cup, even though there are probably not many people who use that in real life. What does a 6 ounce cup even look like???

I think there may have been some improvements since the earlier reviews-there is a picture guide inside the lid, and a very basic manual. One thing it does say is not to use more that 5 Tablespoons of coffee, probably because if you use much more, it will leak or get grounds in the coffee. Made my first cup of coffee this morning in my new 6-cup Brewmaster. I read the reviews of the thing after I bought it (of course) and took note of the many complaints about leaking. It is an idiosyncratic little device. The coffee basket isn''t quite deep enough for standard 10-cup filters, so that when you close the top, the mashing action can push the water arm out of the way, which I''m guessing can lead to leaks. Thing is, I see no mention of a water arm--dripper--whatever in the instructions or in the diagram, and the part is movable. If it moves, you should mention it in the manual, especially if said ''it'' needs to be in a certain position for unit to work properly. Because you have to move the water arm out of the way to take the basket and reservoir in and out, and if you don''t move it back in place after you put the reservoir and basket back in the machine, the water will not drip over the coffee but elsewhere. Given that the arm can also move around after you close the lid, it really needs to be mentioned in the directions. Too bad it doesn''t lock in place. It moves too easily.

The brand of coffee you use will help determine whether you can 1) fill the thing to capacity, and 2) get a decent cup of coffee. Instructions say to add 3/4 tbsp per 6 oz cup instead of the usual 1 tbsp (or 2 tbsp in the case of Starbucks coffee, which I tried first). Make note of your preferred coffee if you''re thinking of buying this. My first cup of Starbucks was definitely weak. I then made a cup using Eight O''Clock French Roast, and that tasted better but was still a little weak for me. My rule of thumb will be ''more coffee, less water.''

During clean-up, I noticed dried coffee on the reservoir''s metal warming plate. Not sure how much flavor that would lend to any coffee left in the reservoir, but it''s one more reason to stick to one cup at a time.

I agree with the other reviewers who say that the coffee is not piping hot. Not much of a drawback for me, but if you''re one of those people who adds a lot of milk/cream to your coffee, you will wind up with a lukewarm brew.

Over all, the unit is a decent fill-in for someone who just wants a cup at a time--many larger coffeemakers have trouble when brewing smaller amounts. I like it because it''s fast, small, doesn''t take up much room on my kitchen counter, and there''s no carafe to worry about. As for the coffee-water proportions, every coffeemaker is different and you always need to work that out anyway.

One star for the manual, because it''s incomplete. If I hadn''t read the other reviews here, I wouldn''t have been on the lookout for leaks and wouldn''t have caught the fact that the water arm had moved after I closed the lid.

UPDATE (8/29/2010): Still using my Brew Station. It still makes pretty good coffee. If I fill to the 4-cup line, I add 6-7 level tablespoons of autodrip-grind coffee. Yes, it''s more coffee than the directions say to use, but that''s the amount needed to make a strong brew.

The unit has leaked since the beginning, but these aren''t signs of breakage or damage. It just isn''t a tightly closed system, so there are plenty of places for water to condense and drip. The underside of the lid especially collects water, which can drip down the back of the unit when you open it to remove the used grounds. Leaking also increases as deposits build up--it really is important to clean the unit regularly with a good descaler like CLR.

Still give it 3 stars, maybe 3 1/2 for lasting as long as it has. If it breaks down at some point, I would consider getting another.

Cons:

There''s no way to know how much coffee is left. No window or meter or anything.

It has a tendency to slide back when you press a cup against it.

It''s easy to spill when pouring water into it, but just be a little careful and it''s no big deal.

BestAir HW14 Honeywell Replacement Wick Filter

Fits perfectly in my Honeywell HCM-6009 QuietCare 9-Gallon, and this filter is half the price of the OEM version. The OEM filter only lasted a couple months, not sure how long this will last, just put it in, but seems to be the same OEM quality and look (except this is all white instead of blue and white). Raised the humidity by 10% in only 30 minutes; the OEM, when new, did the same, then the effectiveness dropped off considerably.

One suggestion, clean your humidifier thoroughly before putting this in. I wiped mine down with just water and it looked like new, but I should have used vinegar, diluted bleach or a humidifier cleaner. I skipped this step thinking it looked clean using just water, but it put out an odor never-the-less. You will not save any time skipping this step, even if it looks clean, it is not, and had to pull it all apart to clean it again with diluted bleach.

These filter wicks work perfectly in my Honeywell HCM-6009 humidifier and are a great alternative to HC-14 OEM filter. SCM2412-UM Humidifier

I bought it at jardenstore.com for $16 when it was on saleThe nightmare just began when I received it. I tried to test it overnight with full tank.

And I made sure no excess water in base (common issue for Sunbeam). I also set the humidistat to max.

The next morning the water was still the same level.

While the fan was running loud, louder than refrigerator or microwave or my ceiling fan, there was no mist emitting at all.

Next chapter: call customer service.

1. tried their published number in Instruction Leaflet 888-264-9669, nobody answered

2. called their Jarden company customer service and after lots of options, a human answered and asked me to call number in step 1

3. still nobody answered; and all 800# published online for humidifier are no-answer

4. sent an email through website and so far nobody answered

If you want to throw your money down the drain and feel like an idiot like me, buy Sunbeam, or any of Jarden''s product.

Jarden is a shame, a sham, a disgusting criminal. (I''m refraining myself from using worse words publically)

My friend gave this as a baby shower gift. I wanted one of these just to keep the air clean and keep the moisture throughout the room all on pair for our child.

Pros: It is not very loud, on a scale of 0-10, it is about a 3.

Cons: Uses paper filters, tank cannot be cleaned and becomes slimy and the biggest problem, the humidifier is a breeding ground for black mold to grow.

The biggest and most harmful part of this humidifier is the cheap paper filters and the inside compartment. After you remove the tank, your notice two screws, after turning these, your remove the top part that contains the fan and your be left with the bottom half. This part is gray in colour and holds two paper filters and a water compartment chamber. This compartment stays wet. For example, Sunday you fill the tank with water, turn on the humidifier and by Friday, when it is time to refill the tank, the bottom compartment will be filled with black mold. This is a serious health concern for children and adults. You do not want a product that can breed stachybotrys (toxic black mold) in your child''s room.

I''ve had this 3 weeks now, purchased directly from Jarden on sale. For the price (about a couple movie tickets and popcorn) it''s a good investment. Note that this is an evaporative type humidifier so it will work a bit better when the ambient temperature is higher eg summer.

Initially I started it up and ran it overnight and there seemed to be no drop in water level ie no humidification. I called Customer Service. A short wait (the ubiquitous phone tree), then my call was answered and a very sympathetic rep suggested several things to try. She added that if I couldn''t get it to work properly the unit might be defective and she would be happy to exchange it for a new one. The main remedy was to make sure the wick was properly wetted (she suggested soaking it, then placing it back into the unit). This I did. Not sure it really helped. But then I noticed an air pocket that forms at the bottom of the reservoir. I dislodged the bubble by tilting the unit slightly. From then on the unit has been working exactly as advertised.

Pros:

1) The unit works as advertised;

2) Customer Service is available and tries hard to help;

3) Tank doesn''t leak & is easy to fill, filter easily accessible;

4) Inexpensive unit (when on sale).

Cons:

1) As an evaporative unit (ie it wicks water onto a "filter" over which a fan then blows) it is best only for a small room;

2) If you are used to a pretty quiet room then the fans will provide an omnipresent humming that can be annoying. As there are two speeds this can be minimized but not eliminated. Myself, I don''t sleep in the same room with this (or any) humidifier.

I use this in a room in which I have several stringed instruments (acoustic guitars and a violin). When I practice, the humming is bothersome and I have to turn the unit off.

Bottom line: Not a bad little unit if on sale.

UPDATE (Jan 2012): Unit still runs fine. BUT, the filters don''t last and are expensive to replace a problem that seems to characterize all such "cool mist" evaporative humidifiers. If buying again, I would go the warm mist route instead.

Got product worked wonderfully for 4 days...then we refilled the tank...which we had done numerous times, only to have it no longer send out any mist.we then cleaned out the tank and the base..even used vinegar as recommended.It still wont work its as if the filter quit drawing the water up...We have ordered new filters which cost almost $30 (this includes the shipping and handling charges). We hope the new filters will help.otherwise thats $70 down the drain.I do not reccommend this product. If you can afford to buy new filters every 4 days go right ahead.you should not have this kind of a problem this soon...!!!!

I too bought this on sale at jardenstore.com for $16. From what I can tell, this type of humidifier is the evaporating kind as apposed to vaporization, so you don''t actually see mist coming out of it. The water level disappears in the appropriate time frame and the automatic shutoff engages when the proper humidity level is reached, so I guess that means it''s working. I have this running on high and a box fan on low and I can barely hear the humidifier.

I''m disappointed to find out from another reviewer that support is lacking. Even general documentation of how this thing is supposed to work is hard to find. Hopefully mine keeps working... so far I''m three nights in. I''ll be sure to update should it die sooner than later.

Let me start by saying these filters work great! Our glasses, ceramics and polymer utensils come out super clean and we use much less detergent. The real problem is we have VERY hard water in San Antonio. The ion exchange process in this filter is the same process as any water softener, but you can''t include the saline recharge in an under the sink filter. My first filter lasted almost two months I''m hoping the next ones last a bit longer, but I''m not holding my breath. Honestly, this filter system just has too much waste for my taste. Throwing away this large chunk of polymer every couple months is not good for my landfill; while the cartridge may or may not be recyclable in your community, the poly beads inside are definitely not. If you''re handy, you can rig up your own salinated backwash system to make them last longer.
