Bodum Bistro Electric Coffee and Tea Dripper Save 41% Off

Bodum Bistro Electric Coffee and Tea Dripper, Red, 4-CupI bought this hoping to simplify my morning routine, but I ended up returning it. Perhaps I was using it wrong, or maybe I got a lemon, but for me, it failed in executing its primary function. I could not get it produce a cup of coffee as well as my electric kettle and Bodum French Press can.

The way it works is by filling the vessel on the right side of the product with water and putting your French Press with coffee grinds on the left. You press the button in the center and water slowly gets pulled from the bottom of the right vessel, passes through the machine, and drips into the French Press cup. On my first attempt, I filled the French Press with my usual amount of beans, pressed the button, and waited for all the water to pass through. When it did, I removed the press from the machine, waited 4 minutes, then pressed. The coffee was weak. I decided to try again, but this time increase the amount of beans. Still weak. I decided I needed to do some testing.

Because of the machine''s compact size and design, I could not get a thermometer probe into the French Press cup while it was working. Instead, I ran the machine until all 16oz of the water passed through, then removed the press cup and took the temperature of the water. I ran this test twice. Both times the water came out at 175-177 degrees F, not the recommended 200 degrees F for French Press coffee. It''s possible I''m supposed to leave the French Press cup in the machine while steeping and it will continue heating, but I usually start the timer when all the water is in the cup and at that time it is not at the optimal temperature. I cannot tell if it will ever reach that temperature since I never let it run that long, but even if it did, it would be difficult to tell exactly how long I should let the beans steep before pressing for the best brew. My Kona beans are a bit too expensive to waste for the sake of science.

PROS

Build quality Despite being plastic, every component of this product feels pretty solid. The French Press top screws and locks into place so it will not come out when pouring. To pour, you depress a lever at the top of the handle to prevent accidental spilling. The tea steeper cup also seems nice. Each piece fits well where it is intended to go.

Size Using Bodum''s measurement of 1 cup equals about 4 oz, this will produce about 4 cups (or approx. 2 8oz cups, if you prefer to view it that way). It is a compact design so it won''t take up a lot of counter space.

CONS

Temperature I was not able to make it reach the optimal 200 degrees F temperature for French Press coffee. After 16 oz of water passes through the machine into the French Press cup, it registered 175-177 degrees F.

Price This seems like a pretty expensive gadget for what it does, considering you could just buy a regular French Press for less than half Amazon''s price. Despite being electric, this device does not do everything for you.

Pieces There are a lot of pieces to this puzzle: machine, water container, French Press cup, lid for percolating water, lid for French Press, cup for tea leaves, lid for tea.

CONCLUSION

If you already have a French Press and enjoy it, I would stick with your current process.

I took a chance on reviewing this item based on the idea that a compact coffee press and tea maker would be a great addition to my office. Here are my thoughts:

What''s in the box:

1. The box contains the unit, plus a tea infuser, a coffee press, and a carafe.

How does it work:

1. The unit works by either making tea or coffee and placing the appropriate parts in the carafe. After boiling the water, you place the desired implement (press for coffee, or the strainer for loose leaf tea (you could also use a bag, of course) into the top of the carafe and you have your desired drink.

Use:

1. I have to say that the coffee that is produced is awesome. It is far hotter and clearly well-brewed then a simple coffee machine is in my experience (for example, a Cuisinart or a Mr. Coffee). The coffee seems more richly brewed and better tasting. Tea is similarly better infused then with an auto tea-kettle and a tea-bag in a cup. The tea is far better tasting as well.

2. The set-up is fairly simple with just a power switch.

3. Clean-up: This item has to be cleaned after each use. This is also not something that can be abused without causing problems with the brewing process as the filter will get fouled up without disciplined cleaning.

Pros:

1. For an office or dorm, this would be a wise purchase as the dual use and small footprint (imagine a small integrated stereo unit) make this a handy unit.

2. For the money, it is fairly well-built. Of course the carafe is glass and subject to breaking. Plus, the parts are plastic and cannot be abused. So this unit has to be handled with care.

3. The combination of the two possible hot drinks is a cool idea and the drinks are better than I would get with a tea-bag or a coffee machine.

4. Design: The unit has a really cool, contemporary design and this does make a nice statement in your kitchen area (or desk area).

Neutral:

1. In using this item, after you brew the water, and place either the diffuser for the tea or the press for the coffee, you have to remove carafe, and place the pourer on the top of the carafe to actually pour the drink. Meh. And, if you want to replace the carafe back into the machine, you have to repeat the process. Meh.

Cons:

1. Dainty. By this I mean that this is not for having a cubicle party as the amount you can brew is about two cups at a time. Plus, you have to clean the unit pretty much each time you use it.

2. Power. This is not a hot-plate, such that you can''t really keep your drink hot for a long period of time. Plus, it is missing that killer app, which is there is no auto turn-off. When you remove the carafe, it turns itself off so there is no real way to keep the drink hot on it''s own. This isn''t a deal breaker, but is one of those things that would have put this over the top of coolness.

Overall:

This is a pretty nice item and overall the good idea here is pretty well executed. For what it is asked to do, I think it covers a lot. I have some issues with the `daintiness'' which is probably because I see that I have to be careful with all the plastic and glass, and the low quantity of drink produced. On the other hand, the unit does produce a pretty darn good cup of tea or coffee that seems to make the above issues petty concerns rather then large obstacles.

Buy Bodum Bistro Electric Coffee and Tea Dripper Now

The Bodum Bistro is, in this reviewer''s opinion, overpriced for what you get. Yes, I know that French Press

coffeemakers get much pricier than this, but the Bodum is of mostly thin plastic construction, and is just

not built to stand up to heavy use. If you use metal utensils with it or use abrasive cleansers to clean it,

you do so at your own risk. The attached AC cord is pretty short. Moreover, Bodum''s idea of "one cup" is

about 4 1/2 ounces, which makes this unit only a two-cup brewer at my usual cup size. Besides, Bodum advises

against the use of fine-ground coffee, explaining that it will clog the press filter; that didn''t happen

when I used a fine grind. You do need to thoroughly clean the Bodum each time you use it, as scale buildup

is said to be a big issue...that''s a huge pain if you use the unit two or three times a day.

Lest you think that I have nothing but negative comments about the Bodum, it must be said that it brews a

darned righteous cup of coffee. The French Press system allows for total infusion, unlike the ubiquitous

drip-style coffee makers, and this gives you a very rich and satisfying brew. That''s all the more important

considering the soon-to-be-skyrocketing prices of coffee beans. The unit itself is stylish in its peculiarly

Euro fashion, and comes in different colors. (Mine is Basic Black, which always works for me.) The Bodum also

comes with a tea strainer, for those who want to get away from lame teabags...admittedly, I did not actually

try out this feature, but I certainly will in the future. The Bodum is quite easy to use, and the manual is

printed in several languages. I just can''t wrap my mind around its nearly $100.00 list price, but, if that

doesn''t bother you, and you can live with the aforementioned issues, by all means buy a Bodum. Amazon offers

it at a pretty good discount, and, since it doesn''t use paper filters, you''ll have everything you need apart

from the coffee itself.

A nice concept for the office or other area without a stove or microwave to heat up the water, the Bodum Electric Coffee and Tea maker is adequate only.

The Positives. THis is a relatively compact appliance that works without fail (but within some frustrating limits--see below), and that includes both a press for coffee and a filter for tea. In the Amazon.com picture, the tank on the right is filled with water, and one adds either coffee or tea (inside a filter) to the container on the right. When the two (washable) plastic containers are in place, the machine will turn on--heating the water which transfer over to the container with the coffee or tea. Tea is brewed and coffee is pressed down with the familiar French press mechanism so that the water is infused with coffee and the finished product has no grounds.

After brewing tea or coffee, one fits a safety lid (liquid won''t pour without depressing a lever), and then pours the beverage into cup or mug. The heat turns off as soon as either container is removed. To keep any remaining coffee/tea warm, one must remove the safety lid, put on the other (flat) lid, place it back on the Bodum, and then turn it back on. These safety features are welcome, but also *too* cautious (as described later). One other thoughtful feature, the tea/coffee container''s hot bottom (from restng on the heating element) is somewhat protected by a lip that extends beyond it, thus minimizing contact with the surface upin which you place it.

Coffee and tea taste fresh (after all, you just made it!), is hot (initially), takes a little over 7 minutes to empty a 4-5 cup (full) carafe ONCE it is heated (more on that, too) and brewing is safe. That said.....

Negatives. Yes, this will sound all "Grinchy," but, taken togther, I found myself disappointed, feeling it''s not worth the money even at a 30% discount over list price. Many of these negatives stem from what I see (others may disagree) with a over-concern for safety. I''d feel differently if this were a device that children will use, but I doubt they will be the primary users.

Temperature. While the initial gulps will be enjoyably hot, replacing the container on the hot plate does not keep it close to this temperature: It loses its heat in a very short period. IT''s not lukewarm or tepid, but it''s just not hot.

Tempermental. It appears that if the two containers are not set in the machine "just so," the Bodum will not begin heating (either that or it takes an inordinate amount of time--well over ten minutes) for a full water carafe to start transferring hot water to the other container. It appears to work best when the handle on the receiving carafe and the numbers indicating cups on the hot water carafe are facing outward--but that may just be coincidence. Basically, I have to fool around with these containers to feel confident it will begin heating.

Extension Cord. In a wonderfully paternalistic nod, Bodum informs us that--for safety reasons--they include a short ekectric cord, and that we may need to buy an extention cord (they assume that''s safer, I suppose). Safety or less expense for Bodum, I wonder...

Taste. Tea is not a problem, but French Press coffee should have a richer, somewhat oily (from the coffee beans) taste and texture. I think that the size of the receiving carafe mitigates against this. The carafe bottom is so wide that the coffee just settles at the bottom--there''s little mixing of water and coffee as you press down (with little or no resistance) with the "plunger." Although this may work better with smaller quantities of water, and even more coffee, the coffee is strong and fresh, but it does not taste very much like French Press coffee.

Bottom line. I can''t really recommend this because of the price/value, temperature, and operating deficits noted above. However, if you absolutely need your coffee/tea fix, have no easy access to a microwave or other heat source, and you''re not too fussy about recreating conventionally made French Press coffee (and if you do use this to make tea, not just coffee), you may feel it''s a worthwhile purchase. While concern with safety is laudable, one wonders if designers could have made an equally safe product that produced a more satisfying taste at a more consistent temperature.

Want Bodum Bistro Electric Coffee and Tea Dripper Discount?

We aren''t big coffee drinkers, in fact we never drink it, but my husband is a big hot tea drinker. Really big, he drinks it when it''s in the 90s outside. But making him hot tea has been a pain with only a small kettle so when I saw this in the Amazon Vine list I picked it for a review knowing I''d get to try it several times.

The version I was sent is blue and I''m grateful for that because while the device comes in a lot of other colors, they all seemed rather gaudy to me. The instruction booklet is easy to read once you find your language in it -it needs clearer divisions frankly to make that easier. You''ll need to read all the instructions because unless you do things just so, the safety features will not allow the machine to work. Safety features that require the pot be locked in and that turn off the heating element after a certain amount of time. These are both good because they lessen the risk of accidents.

The water reservoir holds over 24 oz of water or more than four standard coffee/teacups. The filter for the pot makes it easy to use teabags or loose tea and it isn''t very difficult to clean. It is a small size and fits neatly on my kitchen counter after the microwave, KitchenAid, and toaster. For just one two four people wanting a hot beverage this has worked very well for us.

I''m so tempted to try to make hot cocoa with it...

Aladdin 10-01450-003 Mix-It Cold Tumbler

Aladdin 10-01450-003 Mix-It Cold Tumbler, 20-OunceDoes what I expected from reading the description. Heavier duty than expected. Easy to remove straw-mixer pieces for cleaning. Onlt thing I would change is to make it vacuum sealed so drinks stay cold longer, and modify the cover so that it''s not so thin (a little hard to get a good grip to unscrew it). Nice for making your own smoothies and frappes to take on the road. Good sized.

Vitapur Bottom Load Water Dispenser Save 6% Off

Vitapur Bottom Load Water DispenserAfter the shipping woes I described below, I found the EXACT SAME cooler at a large home improvement store that is in most areas. It''s under the brand "Polar", but it is identical and made by the same company. There is nothing different about it. Same motors, same design, etc., and it was $199. I can tell you it keeps water very cold. My wife is not a fan of the energy saving "kettle" feature. It doesn''t keep water hot so you can step up and get a cup of tea anytime you want. You have to press the button and 3-4 minutes later water will be tea/coffee hot. This is fine if you plan every part of your day. It sucks if you want to make a mug of tea on your way out the door and you forgot to hit the button 5 minutes prior.

First, I''ll tell you that I have no idea if this dispenser keeps water at perfect cold or hot temps. I don''t know if it easy to change bottles or to clean it. I was never able to get that far because Amazon can''t ship this item anywhere without it being trashed. What I can tell you is that you should not buy this until Amazon figures out how to package this so that it can arrive in a form that resembles a water cooler. I wish I were kidding. This is a thin metal shell. It''s nothing special, but what do you expect? It''s a cooler, not a structural support beam. However, when you have thin metal containers, you''d think it should be protected from bumps and dings, right? This cooler could be creased with your bare hands, so sending it in a PLAIN CARDBOARD BOX with a small piece of stryrofoam on the top and bottom (Nothing on the sides!!! Are you kidding me??) is a recipe for disaster. I ordered this via Prime, and it arrived 2 days later. The cheap box was beat up. It had gone through the UPS wringer, that''s for sure. When I yanked it out, there it was. The side was creased in about 2". Also, the top plastic cover was cracked from a ding or fall it took. I called Amazon and expressed my displeasure at the packaging and asked for a replacement. They sent one next-day via FedEx. Unfortunately this one was in even WORSE shape. The side was so bashed in the cover had zero chance of going back on. What a disaster. This would be an easy fix if they would simply put the cooler with its box in a bigger box and actually protected the product. So, until someone can verify that this cooler is packaged as if they actually wanted it to arrive in one piece, I would stay away.

The Vitapur Bottom Load Water Dispenser is perfect! I haven''t used the hot water dispenser, as I use it for cold water only. It cools the water perfectly-enough to fill a couple glasses at a time before more needs to be cooled. The motor (? or pump?-whatever makes the water go up from the bottle to the holding tank) is a bit loud. Since I have it in the dining room, it''s not an issue for me, but if someone wanted to put it in a room where noise would be a factor, I wouldn''t recommend it for that location.

I was concerned about having it shipped, based on some reviews stating they arrived damaged. I had NO ISSUES whatever with shipping. The box had a couple dents, but nothing was dented/scratched on the water dispenser. It worked perfectly right away.

It''s nice to be able to slide the water bottle underneath, and not have the extra vertical space taken up by a water bottle.

Pentek C1 Carbon Filter Cartridge

Pentek C1 Carbon Filter Cartridge, 9-3/4'' x 2-1/2'', 5 Micron
  • Reduces fine sediment and chlorine taste and odor in residential drinking water
  • Nominal filtration rating of 5 microns
  • Carbon-impregnated cellulose media with polyester backing and netting for strength and dirt-holding capacity
  • Initial pressure drop of 4 psi at a flow rate of 5 gpm
  • Temperature range of 40 to 125 degrees F (4.4 to 51.7 degrees C)

I thought it was a carbon block filter, but it turned out to be a carbon impregnated cellulose filter. I have water that is contaminated with a chemical and use carbon block filters to remove it so it is safe to drink. I use a Whole house Carbon Block filter as a primary filter but use this smaller filter under the kitchen sink to provide added protection. This filter will probably provide short term protection, so I decided to keep them and use them for about two weeks each and then toss them. For other applications this filter may be adequate, but not for mine. I know I could have sent them back, but needed one right away so decided to keep and use these, but have also ordered carbon block filters to use when these are used up. Please research what what filter you really need based on your own situation. I do recommend a CARBON BLOCK filter to remove any chemical contamination issues, but again do your research, and make sure you are getting what you really need. I do not fault the seller, but blame myself for not making sure for not making sure I got what I needed!

  • Also reduces lead, chlorine: taste and odor only, MTBE, Mercury, Cyptosporidium, Giardia, and more
  • ASM filter life indicator

I have been using various Pur faucet filters through at least 5 units now. Originally the plastic rotate units, then 2 stainless in a row as I moved each time I''d just buy a new one leave the old behind. They are great.....

EXCEPT that the case tends to crack nearest the faucet hookup. This is particularly quick to happen on the units that rotate. But it has also happened to me with the stainless steel unit just happened to me on a SECOND stainless now.

ALSO the screw-on cap in front is a PAIN to remove. It''s round and smooth and hard to find any grip on it when it''s screwed in tight. They really should put a couple of flat edges to give your fingers somewhere to grab. Installing is difficult as well getting that last bit of turn-down to get it flush.

I keep coming back to Pur though even with these defects they are a great value.

PUR Water Filter Review \ Hack

Once, long ago, PUR was a great company with great water filtering technology. I still love their filters! Unfortunately, a big bad company named Proctor and Gamble bought them and messed them over in favor of customer abuse. This was accomplished using two methods. The first method is called ''planned obsolescence'' whereby their faucet mount apparatus leak and die briefly after the end of the warranty period. (It didn''t used to be that way in the good old days). The second method is called ''timed death'' whereby their apparatus lock up their enclosed filters at a preset volume of filtered water, whether the filter is actually used up or not.

Planned obsolescence can be overcome by calling up Proctor and Gamble BEFORE your warranty runs out, and letting them know that your PUR apparatus is squirting water all over your kitchen. Ask them to send you a replacement or a replacement certificate. If need be, call repeatedly asking to speak to the President of P&G, never taking ''no'' for an answer. Then take your certificate and get another PUR apparatus. This will provide you with a lifetime for the apparatus more representative of the lifetime of original PUR apparatus. You''ve cheated no one. P&G''s cheat on you has been overcome.

The timed death lockout of your filter is extremely easy to overcome. Pull out the filter from the apparatus. This resets the nasty timing device to zero again. Put your filter back in. TADA! You''re done. Your filter will work as before. Note, however, that PUR filters do eventually get clogged with stuff. You''ll know when to change it.

I hope that helps everyone restore goodness to the universe. I still love PUR filters better than any other brand and wouldn''t be without them. It''s P&G''s customer abuse that''s not worth liking. Shame on you P&G.

Like other reviewers, I have been a Pur filter user for years, but lately the units haven''t been lasting more than a few months at a time. I stuck with Pur because of a lack of other options out there similar to Pur. Lately, the units crack or leak or both--definitely not worth the cost. I tried this new design, and so far I''m pleased. It has a cheaper look, though--the ''brushed chrome'' in no way matches my faucet like an old model did. I was alarmed at first with the cheap construction, but the easy installation and quick release has me sold. If the unit breaks within a few months, I''ll write back about Pur and then buy a different brand. So far, so good.

UPDATE: PUR filter fell off after a week or so. The plastic screw-on ring warps because of the weight of the filter. I contacted PUR, they send another ring attachment. It warped in a matter of days. I called them again, got another ring, and it warped in a matter of days. It keeps falling off the faucet. Horrible design flaw! I''ve gone to Culligan filters--very simple, less can go wrong.

This is my third Pur Ultimate faucet filter. All three leak at the faucet connection after about 6 months of useunacceptible. I had them installed by different plumbers, so it''s not an installation error. Guess I''ll go back to the filter-pitcher, because at $60 for this filter, they can''t figure out how to make them last.

Now that it''s installed, I really like this system. I''ve used Pur faucet-mounted filters for several years, and I decided to give a dedicated faucet system a try. I''m glad that I did. The flow rate and water quality are similar to that of the Pur systems that I used, but I no longer have a bulky filter mounted on the end of my faucet. Ahhhh, so nice. :) I picked this Filtrete model instead of their lower-priced versions that connect diretly into the cold water supply for a kitchen faucet for two reasons: (1) I didn''t want to reduce the flow rate of my main faucet and (2) I wanted a filter that also reduces lead content.

Overall, I recommend it but I do have some installation tips below and in the video.

My video provides an overview of the system (including what comes in the box), some installation notes and tips, and a shot of the flow rate. Here''s a quick summary of the video:

0:00 1:40: Overview. I show what''s in the box and an installed faucet in action.

1:40 6:48: Installation Tips.

(-) 1:40 2:40: Notes on the faucet installation. The included faucet is different than what''s in the main instruction manual, but there is a separate set of instructions included in the bag with the faucet. The faucet is very easy to install once you have an available hole in your sink.

(-) 2:40 5:02: Notes on the plastic cold water fitting that comes with the system. This is the longest section because I had issues with mine leaking, so I went and bought a metal replacement at Home Depot. All parts cost under $10, and it works great. I show the metal parts and how it looks installed.

(-) 5:02 6:48: Notes on filter installation. After initially trying to mount mine with the supplied screws, I decided instead to simply wrap it in a towel and lay it down under my sink. Works great, and takes less than a minute to set up. :) Seriously, you might give it a try before going through the effort of drilling and screwing in the filter mount.

6:48 7:12: Showing off the water flow and how quickly a glass fills up. I''m very happy with the flow rate of this system.

Again, I recommend this system. If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a comment. Thanks!

Let me first start by saying I really do like this unit. It comes with everything you need to swap out a soap dispenser or sprayer on your sink and replace it with the included faucet to have fresh water at your finger tips. The only issue I had was with the installation parts.

Specifically, the plastic adapter that taps you into the cold water and runs the tubing from the filter and also from the faucet. The plastic adapter is supposed to twist on and in my case, it didn''t want to very easily. As a matter of fact, I was really worried I had stripped the threads, but after many attempts, it finally took and I screwed the adapter connector down as tight as it would go. Secondly, the mounting bracket for the filter requires 2 screws. Well once you get the screws in just the right length to slide the mounting bracket down in place, you still have to tighten the screws for the finishing touch. Well, guess what? The mounting bracket blocks the screw heads and I can''t get a good bite on them with a manual screw driver. So although it is attached, it''s not as tight as I would like.

When all was said and done, I had some slow drips that I''ve been watching from the plastic adapter which have appeared to slow down since installation. I''ll keep a close eye on it over the next couple of days and assess what I need to do, if anything.

As for the water itself...it tastes really good and is clear as can be. This is great addition to our coffee maker and pitchers. No more trying to fumble under the filter spout on the fridge, this beauty has a great stream of water that filled up a 2 quart pitcher in record time.

They say the filter lasts up to 6 months, so it will be interesting to track that.

All in all, it took me about an hour to install as the disposal blocked access to the soap dispenser I needed to remove. Not to mention the odd angles needed to tighten down the faucet to the sink once I got going under the sink. But, I still managed to do it and I think you can to.

I hired my usual handyman to install this product. I have the correct sink design to use this product you *must* have a hole next to the faucet where a handheld sprayer or other device would normally be found, otherwise it involves too much expensive work to have a hole cut into your stainless steel sink.

The handyman realized there would be an additional $40-50 that would need to be spent at Home Depot buying extra parts in order for this filter to fit and work right underneath my sink. He also expressed concerns about drilling holes in the shared wall underneath my sink that connects my apartment with the one next door. So I opted not to complete the installation at that point, and the product sits in the opened box, unloved and completely unwanted. If I''m going to spend that much money making this filter system work right, I''d rather just invest in a more expensive filtration system in the first place. So why did I rate this a 4 out of possible 5 stars? I don''t think it''s fair to rate a product a 1-3 if the reviewer was unable to actually use the product as it was intended, but it wasn''t necessarily the mfg''s fault.

Want Filtrete 4US-MAXL-S01 High Performance Drinking Water System Discount?

It doesn''t matter if you''re using city water or well water, there will always be risks of contaminants getting into the water supply, and that''s why I choose to always filter my drinking water. With Filtrete I know I''m getting a quality water filtration unit that will help to keep my drinking water clean and my family protected from water-borne problems. This particular model is slim and easy to install underneath even the most crowded sinks. Placing it between the garbage disposal, drain pipes, and water lines for faucet and dishwasher wasn''t an issue at all. The cartridge is easy to install and replace as well, and is made in such a way that there is little chance of making a mess.

As for installing the slim faucet that comes with the filter, I didn''t want to sacrifice my sprayer hose, so I took the two minutes necessary to drill a hole next to it, so that I could have the convenience of both. I actually like this setup better than having the entire cold water supply to the kitchen faucet filtered, as the filter not only cuts down on water pressure (which is normal and to be expected), but it will significantly increase the filter''s life, since only water for drinking will go through the filtration process.

Overall it is a great solution from a trusted brand.

Filtrete 4US-MAXL-S01 High Performance Drinking Water System, Maximum Plus Filtration

Note that this Filtrete under-sink filter system comes with a Maximum Plus filter, that has a 750 gallon / 6 month estimated lifespan but is capable of filtering out lead/cysts and not just sediment and chlorine. The drawback is that each filter is about 2-4 times the cost of a standard sediment/chlorine filter for under-sink units, but it is worth it for the added filtration benefits.

The installation kit is straight forward. I''d say that a homeowner with some intermediate experience with plumbing will be capable of performing the install. I read some other reviews complaining about the plastic water supply line adapter cracking. I''d recommend using only 1 layer of Teflon tape and not overtightening it! It is working perfectly in my kitchen sink, and I have another Sears under-sink filter that I''ve been using for over 10 years. The installation method and parts/quality for the Filtrete kit is substantially better than the Sears model.

The filter uses a quick-turn bayonet fitting, and it is very easy to remove/install and takes up hardly any space under my sink. Since there''s only 1 filter unit, it takes up even less space than a traditional 2-filter under-sink unit.

The filtered faucet spout is quite long, and has a long reach. The water pressure is exceptionally strong for this level of filtration. I was expecting mediocre water flow because it could filter out the smallest of particles like cysts and lead, but it was strong MUCH stronger than my Sears sink filter. The taste of the water is comparable to the water coming out of my Sears filter and this will be subjective because everyone''s palette is going to be slightly different. However, I''d say that the water out of the Filtrete tastes like the purified water I''d buy at the store under various brands like Dasani or Nestle (not to be confused with Spring water).

The overall build quality is superb, exactly what I expected from Filtrete / 3M, and it takes up hardly any space under your sink. About the only complaint I''d have is that the filters are expensive compared to the standard sediment/chlorine filters, but keep in mind that these Maximum Plus filters will get rid of a lot of nasty stuff like cysts and lead, so it is well worth the price.

Overall: 5/5 stars, this is a well-made filtration kit that hardly takes up any space under your sink. Just remember not to overtighten the fittings and use Teflon tape. If you''re not comfortable doing any work on plumbing, I''d recommend seeking the help of a friend who''s a plumber or a professional. If you feel adventurous, have the right tools, and are mechanically inclined, it''s not that difficult to do it yourself.

Genuine Eureka DCF-21 Filter 68931 Save 49% Off

Genuine Eureka DCF-21 Filter 68931 - 1 filterGreat OEM factory filter that is the same as the one that comes with the vacuum when you buy the vacuum. Don''t bother to wash this filter as the user manual says you can. It will stink terribly because you can''t get all the lint and dirt out of it. I had to soak the plastic cannister parts in ammonia water to get the smell out after I washed the original filter, dried it, & vacuumed with it. YIKES! What a smell. Just toss it and get a new one every time.

This is the official filter for my vacuum. I made the (costly) mistake of buying an unofficial one at walmart and it didnt actually fit properly. This one does and works a lot more efficiently.

Two attempts to get the correct filter, genuine Eureka filter, have failed. I keep being sent the 3m Filtrate aftermarket filter. Not even the one pictured under the 3m filtrate listing. This aftermarket filter has extra feet and a piece of foam on the bottom that keep it from fitting correctly in the vacuum cleaner.

The first returns person was helpful. Tried to assure me if I ordered a sold by and fullfilled by Amazon I would receive the correct product. Vs the sold by vendor, but fullfilled by Amazon product I ordered the first time. The original order was just done by prime elligable products and the picture/ product name saying it was the correct filter. The second one I made sure was sold by and fullfilled by amazon. Recieved the same 3m filter, missing the 3m insert, but with a tiny printed tag that says eureka style, vs actually being a Eureka product. The second returns person just wants to pass the info off to technical. Didn''t seem to care this was the second time this happened.

I give up. Both are being sent back and I have to try to find the product locally.

My eureka was slowing down a bit and none of my attempts to clean the filter were met with succcess. Finally I sought out a replacement (this one) and it''s like a new machine. I wish amazon would add this to their subscription tool so I could just get a new one every 6 months or so. Yes it clogs and needs replacement, that''s the point, now all that crap isn''t in my carpet or air!

It fits, it works, and we change them about once a year despite the recommendations of the water generator unit, mainly because the water is pre-filtered before it arrives at the first activated carbon cartridge. Save your old cartridge fittings, and install them on this cartridge if necessary. Some water generators need special adapters for each cartridge, but the adapters fit the standard thread on this cartridge, so no problem.

Takeya 64-Ounce Iced Tea Maker with Silicone Handle Save 29% Off

Takeya 64-Ounce Iced Tea Maker with Silicone Handle, Avocado/OliveI''m so glad I found this tea brewer. I had the Bodum Ceylon brewer for about a year and I would imagine that it''s one of the main alternatives to the Takeya.

I''ll do a quick comparison:

Durability honestly, i''ve only had it for about a month but it''s obviously made of better quality, or at least, more durable material. i''m not overly concerned about it breaking. the bodum ceylon i had cracked after using it for about a year and with relatively light usage as in not every day or even every week of the year. time will tell, but i don''t think this is gonna break so easily. the quality feels better in the hand. doesn''t feel cheap.

Infuser/Filtering ability the holes on the bodum are large and so smallish leaf or the "dust" gets through quite easily into the brewed tea. the filter on the takeya is very fine and so far i''ve had clear cups of iced tea. i''ve been making white tea which has a larger leaf though. i''m thinking that it would do okay with japanese teas which tend have a very fine, almost ground up, leaf. i think takeya is a japanese brand so i would imagine they''d make a brewer that would do a reasonable job on their teas.

the infuser on the bodum though extends the length of the pitcher and so you don''t need to fill it up. you would need to fill up the takeya to at least where the tea leaves are in the filter in order to make the tea. you may not want that much and you don''t have the option of choosing.

Looks the bodum was nice to look at but the material easily took on a cloudy, not so new looking appearance. it looked old after the first usage. i like the takeya i like green top since that''s my fave color. this particular takeya model is tall so you should take measurements in your fridge to make sure it''ll fit wherever you plan to put it. the bodum model is slender which is nice. it slides in easily to narrow areas.

Ease of use the takeya filter/infuser twists into the top/lid. that''s very cool. it''s very easy. the bodum slides into grooves/tracks on the side of the pitcher. you just have to make sure you get into the grooves; they are easily missed. you also flip this thing at the handle to open the top. the air can also easily access the tea because it''s not really closed off. the takeya has a twist open top that will allow you to pour, without excess spillage. and tea stays fresher.

BPA if you care, takeya says it is bpa free. i don''t know about bodum. it''s not on the description.

so, obviously i prefer this one. it''s a nice product. i''m looking forward to making more iced tea. i use the cold (no heat) brewing method by the way.

I saw a larger version of this with a separate brewer so you''d make the tea in one vessel and then store it in another. I went in search of something more practical and this is it.

1. Good capacity and design. Makes plenty of tea and stores on the fridge shelf or on the door.

2. Some don''t like the fact that the filter screws into the lid. I do like it. If you make a whole container, that''s enough loose tea to have small pieces of your tea floating out of the top of the filter if you make a whole pitcher.

3. I use a java bop for my iced tea and haven''t found even a speck of leaf in the finished product. Great sized mesh.

4. I use the hot water method and it stays HOT for a really long time. At first I was annoyed that I had to wait so long for it to cool down before chilling it. Then I realized that it makes it great for a table pitcher for hot beverages. I can wait for something that performs a dual-purpose well.

5. Great for using herbs, etc. to infuse just about anything. Ideas? Please share!

I had been looking at this and my wife bought it for me recently. Yes, it''s plastic, but that''s not a big deal to me. In fact, the plastic seems to be pretty sturdy, and not thin/cheap. The filter is a plastic mesh, so we''ll see how long that holds up. I use it for brewing black loose tea and it''s been good so far. Just boil water in the electric kettle and pour in. I only use around 3 teaspoons of black tea in the filter when I fill this thing up and it''s fine. I could probably get away with a little less, but I''m still experimenting. The filter unit screws into the the lid, which then screws on to the top. After 5 min, pull it out and rinse the filter. My electric kettle only holds up to 1.7 liters of water, so it doesn''t quite fill up the pitcher. It''s actually perfect, because I put ice cubes in to top it off. Then let it finish cooling on the counter for an hour or so. After that I can put the lid on and place in the fridge to finish cooling. It does the job I wanted, which was an easy way to make a large amount, using the loose tea.

How do I cope with Heatwave 2011? With copious amounts of iced coffee, courtesy of this little Takeya gem.

I fill the tea reservoir with ground coffee (running a little water into the coffee as I fill the reservoir), then fill the pitcher with water (leaving about 3/4" air gap), screw the cap/coffee reservoir on, and let it "perk" overnight in the refrigerator. Perfect iced coffee!

Nearly all the bad reviews are from people who didn''t read the description carefully enough and thought they were getting a glass pitcher. "AcraGlass" is a trade name for clear acrylic. Yes, the name is misleading, but when the description says "more durable than glass" and "BPA-free", a careful reader can infer it''s a type of plastic.

I love that the mesh on the infuser is very fine. Even when brewing red tea, which is very small, only a small amount of the finest dust makes it through. The lid seals tight, or opens for pouring with 1/4 turn, so it''s easy to keep your tea fresh. And it''s narrow enough to fit easily in a fridge door.

The bottom of the infuser is solid plastic, which allows you to press down with a spoon to extract the liquid from your tea leaves without worries about damaging the mesh. But I will say the mesh is so fine and delicate that I do worry about how it will hold up over time. The solid bottom also makes it slightly harder to rinse out, because you can''t run water straight through the bottom. But that''s a minor quibble.

I''ve had mine about a month, and so far I''ve just rinsed it well and let it air dry. No problems with scratching or clouding... yet.

Now that I have this pitcher, I''m able to easily enjoy iced versions of the same loose teas that I like to drink hot during the winter.

Murphy''s Oil Soap Save 18% Off

Murphy''s Oil Soap, 32-OunceI just discovered Murphy''s Oil Soap about a month ago. I was looking for a good wood cleaner that has been tried and trusted, so I decided to give Murphy''s a try. I had a new, wood table that I built and after cleaning it with Murphy''s Oil Soap, I was very happy with the results!

Of all things, my little kitten helped me discover other uses for Murphy''s. While working through some litter box training issues, my kitten had accidently made a boo-boo on my leather dinning room chair. Murphy''s Oil Soap was the only cleaner I had available. I diluted some of Murphy''s Oil Soap in a spray bottle filled with water. I sprayed the diluted Murphy''s Oil Soap right on the leather chair, and using paper towels, cleaned it up. I reapplied it again spraying all over the chair and wiped it clean with paper towels again. WOW! to my surprise, it cleaned my leather chair perfectly! You would never in a million years guess that anything ever soiled my chair. It cleaned up all the mess and the odor was gone!

So, I thought, hum.. If Murphy''s can clean that, how will it do on my counters, stove top, refrigerator door, sinks, and such..That very same day I used it to clean my whole house and it worked like magic! Cleaned, everything, cut grease, and left a fresh, clean sent. So now, I no longer buy any other cleaner. I only use Murphy''s Oil Soap, diluted in a spray bottle for all my household cleaning!

I''ve also used Murphy''s Oil Soap diluted in a spray bottle to soak pots and pans with stuck-on, baked on food. I only had to soak it a few moments and it lifted it right off. I keep a small spray bottle next to the sink and I use it to clean the dishes off before I put them in the dish washer.

It works great for cleaning recyclable glass and plastics. I fill the bottle or jar with hot water, spray some Murphy''s inside and shake. It cleans it perfectly.

The only time I would use Murphy''s Oil Soap straight from the bottle is if I had a stain on my clothes. Put a drop, full strength on the clothes stain, rub it in and then put it through the washing machine. Other than that, always dilute it with water! Always test on the bottom edge of your fabric before you do that though.

Oh, one other really cool thing I discovered. Murphy''s Oil Soap contains citronella oil for the fragrance. Well, citronella oil is a natural bug repellent and repels ants, mosquitoes, fleas, ticks. So in my opinion only, if you use Murphy''s Oil Soap around your house, those critters just may think twice before coming inside! ;)

------

Pro''s

------

-> A very safe product to use. Gentle on surfaces. Gentile on your skin.

-> No harsh chemicals like bleach or ammonia. You can breath easy.

-> Cleans surface dirt, wax buildup, cuts grease.

-> No residue. Cleans without leaving a film behind.

-> Cleans wood well and any other surface in your home!

-> Smells clean and fresh

-> Highly concentrated, so one bottle will last a long while. Economical

----

Cons

----

None that I can think of at the moment. It does exactly what it is supposed to do, and more!

The only surface It''s not good for is glass because it''s a soap based product. Use vinegar for glass.

This is not really a "con", but you must make sure you dilute it to the proper ratio of cleaner to water. If you are even slightly leaning toward too much cleaner to water, it could produce a solution that might be too oily or leave behind a film. So, if you''ve tried this product in the past and you felt it was too oily for some surfaces, try mixing it again with less cleaner to your water mixture. With test and trial you''ll come up with the perfect ratio for all the surfaces you need to clean and it will clean great without leaving behind anything.

----------

Conclusion

-----------

Murphy''s Oil Soap was made especially for sealed wood but is a fantastic, natural, hardworking, safe cleaner that you can use around your house to clean any surface except glass.

I highly recommend this product. Try it and I think you will also agree!

We have been using this product on our wood floors (in our current home) for over 35 years now. We use no other wood floor cleaner. We have been using Murphy Oil Soap in our homes for almost 50 years now and it was pretty much a standard in the homes of our parents.

Please keep in mind that this product IS NOT a floor wax, It is a natural oil cleaner. We have found that with its continual use that our floors maintain their original hand finished luster. The wood does not dry out nor is any of the finish on the floors ever removed, which by the way, many like products will do from time to time, depending upon the material used and the finish.

There are a couple of things to note about this product. First...never every too much of the stuff, a wee bit of this product goes a long, long way. If you do not follow the directions on the bottle and follow it precisely, i.e. adding too much cleaner to the water, then you could quite well have a mess on your hands in the form of a very oily and somewhat sticky residue. The old thought that "if a little works, then a lot should work even better," does not apply here so take warning! Second, if you have wooden cabinets, in particularly wooden cabinets with some of the newer finishes on them, you might want to test a small out of the way area first. If you use too much of this stuff, i.e. poor it on straight out of the bottle like a neighbor of ours did, then you risk ruining the finish of your wood work. This is really not the fault of the product; no, it is the fault of the user not following directions.

It should also be noted that this product SHOULD NOT be used on an unstained or unwaxed or unfinished wood surface. It is after all, water based and will make a mess of untreated or improperly treated wood.

It should also be noted that this is a pretty environmentally safe product; one that actually works.

Anyway, this product has kept our floors quite nice over the years and protected them from packs of undisciplined dogs, cats, children and grandchildren (my wife includes me in this rogues gallery). Actually, with the exception of a few accidental gouges here and there (my fault...I admit it), our floors look much the way the did in our current home as the day we had them installed; a bit mellower, that is true, but to be honest that is the look we had intended from the beginning.

This product is quite cost effective as a bottle, even in the size of home we have, goes a long, long way.

Murphy Oil liquid soap is the very best you can get when you want to clean wood--even wooden floors, just as the other reviewer correctly notes. This stuff goes a long way and you don''t need to use lots of it in order to clean--just pour some into a bucket of water, mix the two for just a minute or so and voila! There you have it--a great liquid solution for cleaning wood surfaces and wooden floors.

This product can, according to some people I know, also be used to clean leather. However, I personally haven''t tried this one. If you want to try it, just clean a very inconspicuous area of the leather so that if it doesn''t satisfy you nobody will notice.

Obviously, this stuff is NOT meant to be ingested. Keep this product out of the way of children and pets.

Overall, Murphy''s Oil liquid soap for cleaning wood is the very best quality soap for cleaning wood available. I highly recommend this product.

This stuff smells awesome -like citronella, if you''re into that sort of thing. There''s been some chatter about whether oil soap will actually damage your floors and leave a residue on them, so let me put that little rumor to rest right now. First of all, READ THE DIRECTIONS. You need to dilute this stuff before using it. By a LOT. Don''t just squirt it right from the bottle. I applied Murphy''s next to the Bona cleaner on my floors. Bona = dull matte finish. Murphy''s = clean and shiny. I had to go over the Bona section of the floor with the Murphy''s to make it shine again. I think I paid maybe $3 for my bottle at Target.

Bye-bye, Bona.

You just can''t do any better than Murphy''s Oil soap to clean wood. I''ve used this stuff for so many years and my mother and grandmother used it before me. It gets everything wood clean and leaves such a great scent too behind. It doesn''t strip the wood and dry it out like most cleansers do, but instead, it replenishes it while cleaning at the same time. I''ve even used this on my hardwoo floors and they look gorgeous. I wouldn''t ever buy anything else out there the clean my wood. Period.

Beckett G535AG20 535 GPH Submersible PumpThis pump runs reliably for a little under two years. I just bought my third one yesterday and had a note to myself to buy another one next month so that I''d have it when the current one failed. Unfortunately I was one month under in my prediction. I predicted one year 10 months and it failed at one year nine months.

I run mine 24 hours a day every day in a pond that holds around 400-500 gallons.

A filter tip that works for me after years of experimentation and does not require a lot of maintenance: put about an inch of aquarium gravel in the bottom of a medium square pond plant basket. Place the pump inside the basket and then cover it with more gravel so the gravel is to the top of the basket. Every few weeks or as needed vacuum the upper layer of gravel with a large Python aquarium siphon Python No Spill Clean and Fill. Vacuuming the gravel will restore the water flow.

This pumps, and it pumps well. Buy a fountian head for it too.

Hoover S1120 Hand Held Wet/Dry Hand Vacuum Cleaner Save 2% Off

Hoover S1120 Hand Held Wet/Dry Hand Vacuum CleanerThis handvac did okay for me, which was to help me clean up cat litter and dust off our hardwood floor.

Its quite loud when use, but its probably make the same noise as other handvac. The exhaust is located on the side, which is nice so you don''t get hot air blow to ur face. The clear, plastic tip is also use as the collection cup for the debris, which can be un-clip and empty over the garbage. It also comes with a wall-mounted holder which can be put together with the charger, so each time you put away the vac it automatically charges the battery.

The thing I don''t like about the vac was the vac mouth only opened in the middle and not side-to-side, which means it only pick up things when its at the middle of the tip. So you really have to aim for them to get it off the floor. The power button must be pressed continously during use, also no indicator light to show you whether its charging or not.

7.2 volt is okay, but if I had to buy it again I''d definitely get a 14 volt for a more powerful suction.

This vacuum is the reason I am currently browsing Amazon in search of a great cordless vacuum!

I owned this for about a year when I started noticing that shortly after I turned it on, the power would gradually decrease until it was barely operating. The culprit was a dying battery.

I was informed, however, by my friendly vacuum dealer that the replacement battery for this vacuum costs nearly as much as the entire vacuum. So...my vacuum ended up in the recycling bin.

Besides the short battery life I experienced, I found this vacuum to have an especially irritating design: it has vents on the side of the motor box that blow air out. If you are trying to pick up pet hair from the floor, this can create a real challenge, if not an impossible task. I would have to sneak up on the hair most times to try to avoid the air flow blowing it away.

I''ve had a Hoover Wet-Dry hand held vac for years, but the new one is truly a little power house. Cleans up the worst messes in seconds, and takes to a good cleaning in the dishwasher (non power parts, of course) with no problem. I wouldn''t buy anything else.

This small vacuum gets used more than any bigger one I have ever owned. It hangs on the wall in my pantry and is used in every room in the house. Want Hoover S1120 Hand Held Wet/Dry Hand Vacuum Cleaner Discount?

I am updating my review of this product now that I have owned it for about a month. All of the disappointments below have simply gotten worse. The only reason I was previously overall pleased by the product was the fact that it at least had some power. The main reason for purchasing this handvac is to pick up unwanted kitty litter when the cats make a mess. When I first purchased this handvac it did quite a good job at quickly picking up the litter, but now after only a month it barely picks up the litter. I actually have to "help" the vacuum by using my hand to push the litter in a pile, as it cannot get random pieces on its own. I am very displeased with my purchase at this time.

I bought this to replace my Black and Decker Dust Buster that after a little more than one year barely picks up anything and has almost no battery life remaining. Overall I am pleased with this new Hoover Wet/Dry Handvac. Despite reading all of the reviews, however, I was not aware until receiving the product that you must hold down the power button to operate the handvac, unlike other handvacs that you turn on and remain on until you shut them off. I am sure this will prove to save battery life (the reason Hoover claims to do it) but after just a short time using it your thumb does tend to cramp up. One other surprising aspect of the product is the actual sucking area. On other handvacs I have owned the entire "mouth" of the handvac sucks which allows you to use the side of the "mouth" to get along tight corners. This handvac, however, has a one-inch centralized sucking area, so you cannot really use it to get in those tight areas. I was also very surprised at how loud the unit is while using it. It makes a loud shrieking noise while it sucks that drives my animals crazy. Overall I would recommend this product to others, but I wish I would have known about these features before purchasing it.
