Zojirushi Premium Thermal Carafe

I have tried a half dozen different brands over the years and this brand is excellent. I was in a coffee shop in Asheville NC and got a cup of coffee from a larger version of this product. I remarked to the server that the coffee was certainly hot and that he must have just made a fresh pot. He said the coffee was about 4 hours old and said his wife (the owner of the shop) had tested about a half dozen different brands of carafes prior to deciding on Zojirushi. He said she found it the best on the market. He indicated that they frequently take excess coffee from the day home and have it straight from the carafe the next morning and find it hot.

I got the product name and went to Amazon to read the reviews on this product prior to purchasing and was therefore aware of the problems identified by the reviewers here. I have now owned the carafe for about a year and use it most days. I usually run hot water into the carafe and let it heat up the container prior to pouring coffee and sealing it. I have kept coffee very hot for over 24 hours. Of course, the secret is to always close the carafe (check the slot to insure it is closed) back immediately after pouring a cup. I also wash the top in a dishwasher after use. This allows water to enter the top (as noted by one reviewer). I turn the top so that the horizontal hole in the side is at the bottom and the water pours out. I shake it a few times and it is good to go.

I find the product more than adequate to prevent coffee from tasting stale. I frequently make 10-12 cups of coffee at a time and pour a few cups then put the remainder into a carafe and seal it until further use. I find the coffee hours later as good as a freshly made cup of coffee. I usually drink the carafe of coffee within 4-6 hours.

After using several other similar products I find this product superior to those products therefore warranting a 5-star rating.

The one disadvantage was the higher price but after a year of use from a value consideration, it is worthwhile.

I was leery at first, thinking this would keep my coffee hotter than a couple of hours. I thought that way until 24 hours later, when I poured out the old coffee, it was steaming hot! This is unbelievable the best invention yet! A definite must have for anyone who enjoys coffee throughout the day. No more wasted, burnt coffee!

This carafe is pretty standard, with a glass liner and a unique lid that has push-button Open/Closed positions. It even exposes a little sign that says either Open or Closed.

Unfortunately, the lid accumulates water (maybe from condensation?) that won''t come out. So stale, possibly moldy, water is there to stay. You can''t shake it out or get to it in any way.

We owned both Thermos Nissan and Zojirushi Premium Thermal Carafe. Here is a comparison of the two products:

Heat retention:

Some people claim that Thermos Nissan keeps heat better. We did a careful head to head comparison -hot water in each, and then tested after 1 hr, 2hr, overnight. We did not notice much of a difference until we were exhausted and gave up on further testing.

Size & weight

Both hold 1 liter (34oz). However Thermos Nissan is half of outside measure of Zojirushi (mainly the height). Zojirushi''s bulky size is due to its inside glass unit plus outside shell. For the same reason, Thermos Nissan 34oz is also much lighter.

Pouring:

W/ Thermos Nissan, you need to continuously push down a lever while pouring. This is not a problem for 34oz one, but is a bit inconvenient when holding a bigger size Nissan. Zojirushi''s open/close button does not have this issue.

Durability:

Thermos Nissan is made of steel, so not breakable. Somebody mentioned that the seal at mouth will need replacement eventually. We don''t know how soon that would be. We have owned the Zojirushi carafe for 14 years, and it is still working properly.

We have Zojirushi at home and bring Thermos Nissan to the office. We have quite happy w/ both of them.

I purchased this broom to help with dog hair from two new dogs my family adopted. It was a big disappointment. The angle of bristles in the broom head are meant for someone much taller than I am say about 7 ft tall! Even if the bristles had been at the correct angle, they are too weak and flimsy to do what was described in the product info. I failed to see how this could bring out hidden dirt if used before vacuuming or how it could be used to "finish" look of carpet after vacuuming. The handle is way too long and too big around to get a good grip on it. The only way I could use the brush was to remove it from the handle and get down on my hands and knees. Not a very practical product if you have good, thick carpet that needs a little extra care.

It''s a little difficult to review this product. I was hesistant to purchase this because I''ve been so use to getting the actual Frigidaire Pure Source filters. There are a number of external factors in the success of a filter cartridge-you can''t just compare them on the numbers or assume that this filter work the same in my fridge as it does in yours. You have the the quality of water going into it, the volume of water going through it, the length of time the water sits in plastic and or copper tubing before and after filtering, how long the filter has been in use (as a proportion of it''s total useful life). That last is a big one, because it depends entirely on operating environment. A manufacturer''s recommendation to replace after a specific amount of time (e.g. 6 months) simply MUST be arbitrary and bear no relationship to performance in your specific circumstances. So, reading the comments here I was of two minds but then decided that (a) my own circumstances are pretty much optimal, and (b) the price difference was such that I wasn''t risking much. The filter bore all this out and I will come back and give it the fifth star if it lasts as long as it should.

I purchased this item a couple of weeks ago.

The GOOD NEWS: I was very happy with the look of it, and I liked the feature that when you are using it for purification it automatically switches back to the main tap when you shut off the water stream. The Power Sprayer feature is also nice. It sprays water with more force than my kitchen sink''s hose and really blasts items clean!

The BAD NEWS: Determining which adapter (Metric vs. Imperial) to use is an iffy thing. (I discovered that my Moen faucet did better with the grey, metric adapter.) But the worst part is that neither screw on deeply/tightly enough, nor have the rigidity of hold to keep the entire unit on. As soon as I turned on the water, the entire unit blasted off! A couple of times of this and I lost the black washer the goes inside the adapter down the garbage disposal. (Note to self: Stopper up the sink when next I try putting anything on the faucet!) Without this washer, water will squirt EVERYWHERE no matter how tightly you try to screw it on to the faucet with the included plastic turning tool.

Since only ONE appropriate washer is in the package, I had to go to Lowe''s and Home Depot to find a washer to replace this one. After trying several "hard'' gaskets, and some O-rings. I finally found a rough replacement for the washer with an Aerator Repair Kit. Unfortunately, the washer wasn''t ideal and although I was able to get a few days of decent use from the unit, it unexpectedly "blasted off" again one night when I simply turned on the tap.

RESOLUTION: I sent two e-mails to Instapure Customer Service one night over the 4th of July weekend and followed up with a call on Tuesday morning when they opened for business out in Colorado. The Customer Service rep was polite, read my e-mails and listened to my complaint. I asked for (and GOT) a METAL adapter this time, along with two replacement washer kits and a spare plastic, metric adapter. They sent them out on Tuesday and they arrived USPS yesterday (Thursday). The METAL adapter immediately grabbed onto the faucet with a solid grip, and I was able to use a conventional "Vise Grip" to ensure tightness. NO LEAKS, and the unit seems to be staying on. We''ll see how it does over the course of a month or more.

BOTTOM LINE: The water that is filtered tastes fine. The features are nice. It is simple to install, BUT BE AWARE, the plastic adapters may not actually hold the unit on to your faucet! In that case, call Instapure (go to their web site for their Customer Support phone number), and ask for a METAL adapter.

NOTE TO INSTAPURE: Instapure, you should include ONLY METAL ADAPTERS for this product! The little extra money it will cost you will pay for itself many times over in saving you postage to send them out after the fact, AND will garner you MUCH more positive customer feedback!

UPDATED REVIEW 3/2013:

After more than a year with this filter system, I am back to report that it has not gone well. You can see below in my original review that we really wanted to believe in this filter system. But, I''ve had to replace the faucet mount twice due to leakage, and about 1 out of 3 filters do not filter good enough to remove bad taste. Instapure customer service is very nice, and sends replacements but it is inconvenient to be out of filtered water waiting for the replacement to arrive.

The problem we have been having is that the faucet mount leaks profusely, so it runs hot water through the filter when the filter is turned off, and the water slowly starts tasting unfiltered. It also leaks so that it lets by unfiltered water by in the filter position.

A shame, we really liked the water when this filter was working properly. Maybe the other model works better? Dunno, we are not going to waste any more time with it.

We have decided on a ispring 6 stage reverse osmosis filter (we went with 6 stage because reviewers indicated hot water coming out when the UV filter 7 stage system was used). At 200+ it is more money, but in the long term the replacement filters cost less per year than a faucet mount and the system is more reliable (based on current reviews).

Overall, we love this filter. As far as faucet mounted filters go, it is by far the best out there. But we did have one major gripe. Please read below:

To start, we did the research and this brand has the best filtration. Go to the website and read the long list of contaminants it filters, very impressive. The filtered water has no odor and no bad taste. THE WATER TASTES GREAT.

Having said that here are some pros:

It automatically clicks off the filter mode when you turn off the water. This we love because you don''t waste filter time by turning on the water later to find out you left it on the filter mode.

It has 3 positions on the spout. One for filter, one for regular flow, and one pulse/pressure spay. This is really cool.

The low profile design keeps the filter body out of your way in small sink spaces. This was also a big seller for us.

We have a couple of cons:

The filter is easy to install, but it does not come with any adaptors. So, if it does not fit your faucet, you''ve got to run to the hardware store. Now, at first we were a little put off by this. THE MANUFACTURER AND SELLER SHOULD TELL THE BUYER THIS FACT UP FRONT. Either that or start including some of the more common adaptors. I would have still bought the filter, and been prepared to get the adaptor at my convenience. Instead I was surprised by this fact mid way into the install, and had to drop everything to make a special trip.

Also, the filter drips a little around the unused outlets and filter body, but it''s not a lot, and not a big deal to us.

Brita and Pur both have their own set of problems. They are both leaky, and the water quality is nowhere near that of Instapure. Except for the adaptor issue, Instapure out performs Brita and Pur in every category, especially in water quality. And this is why we put filters on in the first place, isn''t it?

One issue I have had in the past with Brita filters is that the filter is vertical and you tend to knock it loose. This filter is much less prone to that. The other issue is that the filter button automatically returns to the initial position so that you don''t have to change the knob every time you are finished with the filter. Also, the water flow through the filter is faster. The only negative is the way you connect it to the faucet. The knurled knob screws down onto the faucet and the connector to the faucet is difficult to tighten.

There are good general purpose filters out there that are much less expensive and will give you clean air, but that''s not really what this is for.

I moved into a new place a while back, and the previous owner had a dog, a fireplace, smoked in the house, and had new carpet in 1 room, and old WOW-musty carpet in another.

He also apparently didn''t like to take out the garbage, because the whole place smelled like month old cooking trash.

I vacuumed, steam cleaned, painted, scrubbed, vacuumed some more, but the odors always came back. It was also ant infested, and I needed to fume the place more than once.

I keep reptile pets, so it''s a HUGE inconvenience to fume the place, as they all have to get moved out to fume.

Also, there was a major water leak, and whenever you ran the A/C, it was obvious there was mold in the vents.

It took a long time, but I''m running this on low speed 24/7 in my living room, and it keeps the place liveable while I slowly got the smells under control with cleaning. It does wonders on cooking odors, pet odors, staleness, mustyness, "wet dog" and some things that HEPA filters won''t touch, like living next to the wastewater treatment plant.

Sounds lovely, doesn''t it?

It works, that''s all there is to it.

I don''t give things 5 stars unless they exceed any and all expectations.

This met my expectations. I also wish there was a ''kit'' to add powerful UV and photocatalytic elements to this unit, but I think it''s not an upgrade, just an option on a new unit.

This isn''t for active cigarette smoke, but to help old odors to go away.

Sc Johnson #70091 Sb Toilet Cleaning Gel

We''ve had this product in action in two of our bathrooms for a few days now. It seems to do a decent job of keeping the toilet clean but it unfortunately smells atrocious. The smell is also VERY strong, to the point that we feel unable to continue using it. I''m guessing we will end up throwing away the remainder of the gel. I cannot wait until it wears off and our bathroom stops stinking.

If they made this in an unscented or made the smell about 100 times less potent it would probably be a fine product, but the smell really is a show stopper, it''s that bad.

I popped in here to review this product because I love the concept. Love the ease of use and think it does a fab job of keeping the bowl clean. At the end of the week, if there''s any left, you can swish it around the bowl for additional cleaning. Yes, this scent is rather odd--I had to get used to it. I''m going to try the citrus scent next. Very easy to use, compact, and I think it''s a winner!

Not only does this do nothing to clean the toilet, but it also has a strong unnatural almost toxic scent to it. It is like a Glades candle gone wrong. It activates my gag reflex when I walk into my small bathroom. I imagine if I stayed in the bathroom longer, the smell would also give me a headache.

Each glob of gel also lasts less than a week long, so you will finish this stick in about a month. I am a huge fan of scrubbing bubbles cleansers, but this was a huge disappointment.

I haven''t had any leak problems. The strange noise I was hearing puzzled me. I also envy anybody who can buy this machine straight through Amazon. you lucky ducks you ;-) I had to pay forty dollars for shipping.

Please let me know if you do hear strange noises. I am curious as to how many people get coins stuck inside the drum. It actually took me a while to figure out where the noise was coming from and took the bottom and back panel off, but the noise still continued. I''m not sure how the quarter became stuck in there, and still baffles me to this day. Please keep me updated with any concerns regarding noises. Hopefully, other owners or myself can help.

As far as the effectiveness of the machine, 5 stars says it all. To note, this washer machine doesn''t have a drum spindle (not sure what you call the part that takes up space in most washers), so you can actually fit many more articles or clothing and/or towels inside.

I recently purchased this, though not from this vendor. My living space is on the top floor and the laundry area is down 2 winding flights of stairs. Someone suggested that if I could do laundry without having it pile up, my life would be easier. So now, this is the first week I have had this installed. Admittedly, I never have overly high expectations of machinery, but I am more than happy with this.

The instructions for the washer are fairly detailed. I ran into trouble over the sink hook-up, just because I did not understand standard terminology. When a friend came in to help, it took him all of 15 minutes (or less). Everything was tightened with a wrench, plus he tied the two hoses (in and out) with a fastener to position them securely. I ran the first load 5 minutes later. No leaks, in spite of what you might have read in other reviews of the same product.

I am not a big person and tonight, the load (at medium, the default setting) was:

1 pair of long pants

1 flannel pajama shirt

1 cotton sweater (in a laundry bag)

1 blouse

4 pairs underwear and 4 pairs of socks (in separate mesh laundry bag)

2 T-shirts

After reading many reviews, I leave it on the medium setting and don''t overfill it. I also got these laundry bags to protect the clothing. The spin cycle does a good enough job so the clothes dry within 12 hours on a rack in the bathroom. It is also easy to hook and unhook from the sink, and comes with wheels that you can choose to install.

I am ***very*** happy with the ease of use, convenience, portability, small footprint.

January, 2012:

Update: Towards the end of the warranty period, there was suddenly a spark and the whole thing went dead. In spite of what you may read elsewhere, I did reach a real person when I called the number listed on the instruction manual. A local authorized repair person was despatched who diagnosed it as the motherboard having a short. Haier was supposed to send the repair rep. a part, but I heard nothing, until a call several weeks later from Haier, saying they were going to replace the washer outright. There were things I had to do and instructions to follow, like cut the piping etc. etc., cut a label, include this and that. When this was followed to a "T", I did receive a new washer, again some weeks later. This immediately malfunctioned and water overflowed. It was a huge mess and somewhat of an emergency. Because I could not wait, I did not call the company but took care of it with my own repair guy. We switched the water level sensor (wrong part on the new one!) with the one I had saved on the old machine. Since then, it has worked beautifully. However, should this malfunction again, I may look for another brand To cut a long story short: 1. Save all documentation. 2. The product is inconsistent. Why would the new washer immediately malfunction with an INCORRECT PART? This was troubling. 3. If you are not in a hurry to get it repaired, then Haier does come through. 4. If Haier replaces the machine, save the old one for parts, if you possibly have room. It is because of these hassles and the malfunctioning that I have downgraded the 5-star to 3.

I purchased this washer from Target through Amazon last month and I couldn''t be more pleased with it. I have been reading the reviews of these the little Haier washers for several months so I was prepared for how the bottom plate works (it bulges out), for the fact that we would struggle a bit getting the screws through the plate and that we needed teflon tape and good pliers to really tighten the hose connections. We were very careful in doing all that and we have no leaks and no odd noises. The sink adapter fit my sink perfectly so I didn''t have to find a replacement. All and all, the set-up was easier than I expected.

As far as using it goes, the loads are larger than I thought they would be, the clothes come out very clean and well spun out so they dry quickly. The controls are easy to understand and so far everything has worked as it is supposed to. Our household has three members, myself and two teenagers and so far it is keeping up with us and sparing us the hideous laundromat problems we had before. A load might be a pair of jeans, 3 shirts and 3 pairs of socks or a sheet, 2 pillow cases and a large towel. We have even washed some blankets.

If anything goes wrong or it develops major problems I''ll try to remember to update here but so far I''m very satisfied.

I''d been looking at this washer for the past 2-3 months. I really wanted it, but, I didn''t have a reason to justify it. This week, I got my reason. Doing 1 load of laundry here in NYC is (minimum) $5 NOT including the dryer. A lot of people who live in apartment buildings have washer/dryers in their basements. People like me, who live in a brownstone/town-house DON''T. The other problem is is it legal? A lot of landlords pooh-pooh the idea of getting washer and/or dryers in tenants apartments, because of the extra electricity drain (a lot of older buildings here don''t have the greatest wiring), and the water hook-ups (the electrical costsis estimated at $14/year, based on 8 loads week.That''s good for me!).

Even though I ordered it yesterday, and they said I''d have it delivered by this Tuesday, I was VERY pleasantly surprised this morning, when FedEx rang my bell, and ... delivered it.

After learning the ''do-not''s'' here (particularly about installing the bottom plate correctly), I had the machine up & running within 10 minutes (not to put anyone down, but, I found that the people who did gripe about putting on the plate the wrong way, etc. would not have had these problems...if they just read the instructions, which, yes, I hate them too, but they were very easy and fast).

I''m one ecstatic apartment dweller now. This machine does what people like me need it to do; it does the day''s load. The sheets from the bed. The towels & such. It''s NOT a machine to give it a week''s worth of laundry, and that''s a blessing to me. I don''t have to collect dirty laundry all week, I can have it done, and ready for wearing the next morning.

When it''s spinning the clothes out (jeans are a great clothing item to judge by) at the end of the cycle, it really, REALLY gets the water out to the point that the clothes are only slightly damp, and not soaking wet.

Since it''s been a really hot summer here in Manhattan, it''s a perfect time to put this machine through it''s paces. Every other day (color/white alternate), I''ll put a load in after I''ve had dinner. Within about 15 minutes, the machine''s finished, and I hang the clothes up to dry. By morning, they''re good-to-go.

As I said, the reviews here on AMAZON are always very important to me, especially when I''m not familiar with the product. Besides Witzkeyman Louie Arrighi''s helpful, informative video about the Haier (by the way the name of the company is pronounced like ''higher,'' NOT like ''hair.'' If you ever see a commercial of theirs overseas they say ''dream, think, etc. Haier''), I also found Vlad from San Francisco''s review helpful. I also took note of, because, while he had difficulties, he did say that AMAZON did try to help, and I strongly agree with those words. Another reviewer (name escapes me) addressed the drying question. He said that the clothes were so slightly damp, he''d dry them on a rack or a line. Saves money, and helps prevent wear on the clothing. He was 100% spot-on.

In conclusion I had a Haier air conditioner at my previous address, and got a new one when I moved here (see my review on that), and having had terrific experiences with Haier, and putting them through tough work, I was doubly-sure the Haier HLP21N Pulsator...Portable Washer would also make me happy. I recently moved to Aurora, Colorado (just outside Denver) and at 5,400 feet the humidity is extremely low. I noticed my skin began to itch, which it had not done before. My doctor advised moisturizing creams, which helped a bit, and an air humidifier. After a lot of investigating I narrowed my search to the Air-O-Swiss and the Williams. In fact, both units seemed remarkably similar with both using a "patented" ionic silver cube and a filter cartridge which seem visually identical. Both units provide warm and cool mist. Possibly the technology is licensed from Air-O-Swiss? The deciding factors for me were:

(a) the Air-O-Swiss listed a capacity of 650 sq. ft. and the Stadler 1,000 sq. ft. I have a very small house 850 sq. ft. which effectively makes the Stadler a whole house humidifier for me.

b) almost every review of the Air-O-Swiss commented on the inaccuracy of it''s humidity meter and the only review I could find of the Stadler said it''s meter was accurate.

THE GOOD: Assembly is a snap. The meter is close to accurate. The water tank is extremely easy to remove and fill. It is dark plastic, but the water level can be seen quite clearly. The tank capacity is sufficient for 9 hours of continual use. The machine is so silent that I have to listen closely at night to hear anything at all. Just a soft "ssshhh." The Control Panel is easy to see and use with many options and has a light to indicate no-water.

My skin itching stopped.

THE NOT SO GOOD: It is expensive and every source I could find had the same price. The filter cartridge needs to be replaced three or four times a year, depending on the hardness of your water, or when white dust accumulates on the unit or on a small mirror held to the fog. The ionic cube must also be replaced once a year. A testing strip is included and if your water has a hardness greater than 21 degrees dH, an ionic humidifier is not recommended. They suggest then using an impeller humidifier. The Desired Humidity cannot be set lower than 40%, but I found that setting it at 60% results in an actual humidity level of about 37% which is what I want anyway.

THE BAD: I couldn''t find any.

SOME NOTES ON OPERATION: The instructions say not to place the Stadler Williams directly on the floor or next to heating. I went to Ace Hardware and found a small, plastic step stool for $12 that is 5" high. This keeps the unit off the rug and makes it easier to access when changing settings. If you have an chest of drawers in the room with space on top it should work equally well. A review of the Swiss-O-Air reported good results from soaking the ionic cube in water for 24 hours before initial use to increase effectiveness. I don''t know if this is beneficial, but I did it and had no bad result.

IMPORTANT: Several reviews of the Air-O-Swiss said that they used de-ionized water. The Stadler unit specifically recommends against this. It is designed to use with untreated water or with a drinking water filter system such as Brita. Using any additives are specifically warned against.

I wholly agree with the previous rater also funny, I used to work in Aurora, CO I now live in Alexandria, VA were it is a bit more humid, but during Winter like everywhere else humidity drops quite a bit and I like to keep the environment at no less than 45% this unit is:

There are some nice features on the Stadler Ultra Sonice Humidifier. I like the timer and sleep mode setting alot. I like the look of the unit and it''s light weight, so easy to move around from room to room if need be. It also creates a very nice mist...I am especially pleased with the mist output being very fine, because with other humidifiers I have used there were times I noticed the carpet nearby being slightly damp or with one the leather chair that was next to it having some patches of water. I haven''t this issue at all with the Stadler. I''m not thrilled with not being able to use my tap water though. I have hard water and in order to preserve the filters, I have been buying and schlepping home distilled water to use. I don''t use the humidifier everyday, but it is still an annoyance and actually I think about it before I do use it, thinking about schlepping more water home. I like the color and design, it is dark and compact and does not look like it should be in a hospital room. As advertised it is quiet make that silent, there is no noise. The tank lifts easily from the humidifier for easily refilling but you want to have a towel handy to put under the tank to catch drops of water when you remove the tank. The filter cartridges cost $20. We have soft water so supposedly we only have to change the filter every 60 days, but if your water is harder you would have to change it monthly so that could be a cost of $240 a year to add on to the cost of the humidifier that is a downside for me. My wife was experiencing some problem with her eyes because of the dryness of our weather and the humidifier has greatly helped. The only problem we experienced was a somewhat acrid odor when we first turned it on so I had to run it in the garage for three days before the odor was gone. We have only had the humidifier for three weeks but other than the initial odor and the the every other month expense for filters we are very happy with the product.

I''ve owned this unit now about 8 1/2 months. I use it nearly every day up to 3 times a day. I use it for drinking, for my ultrasonic humidifier, to top off my little aquarium and to water house plants.

for drinking, I need to run the end product thru a Brita filter in order to remove that "distilled" flavor. it has been a godsend for my ultrasonic humidifier.. I live in Dallas and we have some of the hardest water I''ve ever had to deal with.

My only niggle on this is the capacity. it would be fine if I wasn''t relying so heavily on my humidifier for my sinuses. but without it. the entire house fills up with that awful white mineral dust that gets in to everything and actually can trigger my asthma.

My house plants also love it. our tap water in Dallas is so hard it actually can kill the houseplants.

My fish tanks are doing much better on the distilled water as the hardness of the tap water destroys the little filters by gumming up the parts with hard, mineral deposits and I have not lost one filter or a fish since switching to the distilled water.

bear in mind, this thing puts off a ton of heat.. it''s like having a space heater on the 750 watt setting while it''s running. I tuck mine in the back bathroom in the part of the house I rarely use because of the heat. especially in the summer.

The distilled water tastes like plastic has been melted in it. Gross! Apparently this is melted glue and is supposed to go away over time. I''m losing my patience as I have distilled 10-15 gallons of water it and still no change in the taste or smell. I will give the distiller credit for removing dissolved solids though consistently 1-2ppm. The only thing I would recommend this distiller for is watering your plants as it produces acidic water in the 5.5 to 6.5 ph range.

I ordered this item about a month ago. A week or later after my order I sent an email to the seller, and found out that it was on the back order and they promised to ship it in two weeks. It arrived about two weeks later, as they mentioned. The distiller looks and feels well-built, even though it''s mostly all plastic. Works fine in a sense that it makes the distilled water.

The main problem though was that the water was not drinkable at all. It had a strong chemical odor and taste. I tried a glass jar, as one of the on-line forums suggested, but it didn''t make any difference. I will not repeat the details here, but just want to mention that Westinghouse is familiar with the problem and claims it is due to a glue :-), and the smell should disappear after some usage. I ran the unit for a few days while disposing the produced water just to get rid of the smell. After a few weeks of using the unit, the glue is still leaching into the water, and I have to use a carbon filter in a pitcher to remove the odor. The smell gets weaker, but is still present. I got a reply from Westinghouse to my email that says the issue was passed to the management, and that they will inform me on the solution, but I haven''t gotten anything from them yet.

I don''t know if it''s important or not, but I didn''t use the included mineral cartridge, so I don''t know if it makes a difference. As you can tell from my story, I was mostly focusing on making sure the distilled water was odorless, as I thought it should be before making this purchase.

If you have similar problems with your units, or found a remedy, please post it here, or on the forum below. I am thinking about keeping the unit, hoping this problem will fade away, so I would like to learn about this issue as much as possible.

I paid over $400 for this product. When the product works, it works well, exceptionally well. Count on it for a year or so. If you use as I did daily, then you have a large amount of electricity flowing thru this product on a daily basis, please note that as electricity flows, the electrical connections within this device are "wear parts" and this become paramount.

People do not think of electrical connections as "wear parts." However, this product is not a TV. Here the intense electrical charge needed to distill water, blows fuses, and burns other internal metal components and melted the plastic housing in the device in my case.

The electrical connection between the plastic housing, which connects to an electrical wall outlet, and the tank, which plugs into another electrical outlet within the device is less than sufficient, in my opinion, for the task. As a metaphor, think of your clothes hangers and imagine they were made out of piano wire instead, and you''ll get my point. The powerful electrical charge required by this device corrodes the connections, and in my case caused failure twice. Once we sent the machine back to Aqua Via and they fixed it without charge. However, they (Aqua Vie) have disappeared, and now neither parts nor support seems available thru Westinghouse. Will somebody from the company contact me and tell where I can get parts?

This electrical problem is, in my opinion, a curable design flaw. It is a big deal rendering the machine useless for most people. Who cares to take their clothes iron apart when it stops working? It could be small deal if one knows the problem of which I write exits and could get the parts. I could fix this with an overpriced $10 or $12 part. Many people maytrash this otherwise excellent product when it does not "go." This reminds me of joke where the youngsters are on the porch and the boy ask, "what does your father do for a living." The girl says, "he takes apart things that don''t go, so you better go."

All first of all I got this through another site at a considerable discount. I had read the reviews about the gluey plastic smell to the water but for the price I paid I was willing to try it.

Ok, distillation to remove impurities make sense and is proven in science that this works. So I am not worried about that end of the process working or not. However I know from experience distilled water is dead it has not taste and no oxygen, one person said they use it in their small fish tank, I would not do this.

Washing out both units before the first use and as directed when you replace the mineral cartridge is a good idea.

Now having read the reviews of the "plasticy/gluey" smell I was sceptical about it. I have a ver sensitive sense of smell. When I took it out out of the it smell like new plastic. No suprise it is new after all.

I washed BOTH chambers and risned them extremely well. Then I added the water and sealed it in, pushed it in place, turned it on and waited, the directions stated this would take 4 to 4 1/2 hours to produce one caraffe of pure water. Remember to take the cap off the pure water chamber and have soaked the mineral cartridge for at least 3 minutes the directions state 30 but I went 3 miutes to assure the water was moving through it and then put in the pure water caraffe.

The first caraffe of pure water took 4 hours to produce as the direction stated, it smelled like plastic, so I ran another caraffe tossed the 2nd one and the third I am drinking now, I am very pleased with the results. There is about a 1/4 cup of water that remains in the chamber after the distillation process. Toss this water out and rinse it out then add new water just to the bottom of the tabs in the black chamber. It is important to just add water to the bottom of the tabs because it boils the water and needs the room to expand and allow the water to boil.

There is only one issue I have with the unit is the noise of the cooling fan. It is very noisy, I live in a condo and I put it in my bathroom so I don''t hear it. Also this puts out a lot of heat, it''s supposed too, let the water cool before you move it to another container.

I had tried a Britta, 3M Filtreet water pitchers, do they filter the water, yes BUT they can not remove the cholrine and other impurities their water tasted OK, the Westinghouse Aquavie is good choice if you need to remove the cholrine and other contaminates. I am pleased with it.

Be sure to do a internet search for it, you will find better prices a site affiliated with the one still has a stock of them for $64.99 on 11/7/2012 at 0127 hours they were showing to have 65% left. Their first part of their name starts with Ben.

The included dispensing faucet does installation parts are designed for a sink with a 1/2" hole, So if you are replacing an existing unit (or have a standard 2" hole in your sink) then note that this unit does not have any method for securing the faucet, you''ll need to rig some type of bracket or use a couple of huge machine washers on the underside to mount the thing. Speaking of dispensing faucet; extremely cheap, wobbly, very poorly made, but it does work. I suggest spending the extra $15 at hardware store to buy a better faucet.

Overall, I''d say to think twice before buying. If you are knowledgeable and able to make things work, go ahead with this brand to save $100 over a high quality RO from a local hardware store (by the way, avoid the whirlpool units at Lowes. I am both a Lowes and a Whirlpool fan, but their RO is garbage. I guarantee you will have issues with the regulating diaphragm within 1-3 years, and that''s the end of the entire unit''s usefulness).

Nutriteam Countertop Water Distiller Stainless

I began purchasing distilled water by the gallon not too long ago. Soon afterwards I realized that I was investing my money into another company who would have to clean the water for me, + spending money on transportation and the cost of plastic pollution by having to create and manufacture all those plastic water jugs.

I looked at many other distiller but this one stood out for me. I was going to get the model with the glass carafe, but since my water won''t be sitting long inside the plastic jugs anyway it would not be a health concern at all. (24hrs at most)

I like to use my distiller during off peak hours. In my area the increased electricity rates are during 5-9am and 4:30 to 8pm I believe. So I will usually set the distiller to run and finish outside of those times

I suggest that you purchase a re-suable water jug that can be left on the counter top or inside the refrigerator so that you will always have a backup of water to use while you make some more distilled water with the machine. For the first two weeks you will run out of water fairly quickly as you hurriedly gulp up the fresh tasting distilled water from the machine. My beginning with this machine cracks me up! Anyhow I know you will love this machine and it will provide you with really great tasting and healthy water. If your already reading this review, it is more than likely that you are on the path to better health through love and education. Remember to pass on the helpful knowledge to other people who are lost in the dark night of life. This way we can all rise together :)

I have had this distiller for over a year now, and I am using it every two days on average. I am always amazed at the quality of the water coming out of it (and the goo at the bottom of the tank that the unit separated from the water after a few runs...). Just pour hot water into it, and after 5 hours it''s done. I never bothered with the charcoal. The unit is somewhat noisy but not to the point of being a problem (the a/c unit is far noisier). It has to be cleaned every few runs, and I use citric acid which is easily obtainable on Amazon; I got five pounds of it last year and it looks as it will last for 4-5 years. The cleaning process is straightforward; no scrubbing is involved, the citric acid dissolves the residue.

Other reviewers mentionned a metallic taste. It did happen the first 1-2 runs but not since.

At 38ish, it was a good deal. The filters it comes with are crap (sorry fellas, but, it didn''t take down any TDS/ppm from tap water, compared to my PUR filter which at least brought the tap water down a good 25 ppm), but the unit itself is decent for this price. But that was easily fixed by taking it apart, washing the rubber O-ring in dish detergent, then smearing lots of Vaseline into the O-ring''s channel & then over the O-ring after it was in place, to make a good watertight seal. That worked--ever since, it hasn''t leaked a drop. (Pure Vaseline is totally non-toxic in a water system--you can eat a tablespoon of the stuff, & it''ll only act as a mild digestive lubricant.) Interestingly, the 1st (transparent) cartridge housing has a polyethylene instead of rubber O-ring, & with a similar seal design, hasn''t leaked at all.

Oh, & the other thing you discover if you don''t disassemble the filter before first use is that both filter cartridges, already installed inside their housings, come still completely wrapped in plastic and won''t let water flow thru, at least ''til water pressure ruptures a hole in it. So unscrew both housings & remove the plastic wrap from both cartridges before use. And be very careful that both O-rings stay in the groove as you screw the housings back on to avoid damaging them, even if you don''t have to use Vaseline to get a better seal.

As other reviewers have said, I suspect the quality of both stock filter cartridges isn''t that great, but the water tastes fine & all chlorine taste is gone. I have better standard 10" cartridges waiting for the 1st set to reach capacity.

This filter isn''t as convenient to use as many other countertop filters for 2 reasons. 1st, the faucet valve isn''t spring-loaded, so it doesn''t automatically return to the no-filtering position when you shut the water off. You have to remember to turn the valve back manually, & if you forget, you waste filtration for a couple of seconds ''til you realize. And 2nd, the filtered water comes out of a separate spigot on the filter instead of being rerouted back in a 2nd little hose to the faucet fitting, so you have to quickly switch positions over to the back corner of the sink to get the filtered water into whatever you''re holding. This will become more of a reflex with time, but will never be as convenient as coming out of the faucet adapter. More of a problem for short people who have trouble reaching the back of their sink.

Still, overall I''m pleased with the filter, so far (after a mere week of use) & give it 4 stars. Having 2 filter cartridges means you can use 2 different kinds (e.g. VOC vs biologicals), & that the 1st filter protects the 2nd from a lot of sediment & other contamination, so the 2nd (finer & so more expensive) filter should last much longer than if it were the only cartridge.

Update 3/14/13: I just reduced my rating from 4 to 3 stars. After a few weeks of use, the faucet adapter popped right out of our faucet, just from the water pressure. It had not been pulled on at all. The adapter''s threads are plastic, not metal, & with so few threads to engage, apparently water pressure is enough to pop it off.

So naturally when reinstalling it, I tightened it more than the first time. That resulted in deforming the plastic threads a little, enough so it sprayed past the threads some (but still within the sink, not onto the counter or floor. After a couple of days, the plastic had flowed into shape & filled the gaps, & it''s been working fine since then (for about 2 months now).

The one other thing I could''ve done is find a custom-fit washer about half as thick to fit between the top of the adapter & bottome of the faucet, to let about 1 more thread engage in the faucet. If it pops off or sprays again, I''ll do that.

The one other problem is that the hand-turned valve (to select filtered vs unfiltered water), also a plastic part, is already getting hard to turn. This may be from the amount of loose crud particles coming out of our old water heater, which is what disabled the valve in our old water filter.

Anyway, I still think it''s a good filter for the money, but you have to be very careful when screwing those plastic threads into the faucet. Use the thinnest washer you can. Tighten it pretty gently at first, & if it leaks, tighten it just a tiny bit more at a time, then check for leaks. If you overtighten it, you could easily deform or strip the threads.

I purchased this product 6 month ago. I have found this could be the most convenient and cost-effective water filter out of a few others my friends and I used in past few years. The installation is a breeze. I didn''t have to struggle with water supply line under sink any more. Thanks to the quick-connect fitting, I just inserted the tubes, tighten the connector to the faucet, flush it a few times, and done. There were reviews about Watts counter-top filter leaking water all over the connectors. This unit does not. I could not imagine the very simple quick-connect fittings work so well. There is a pin on the faucet connect, pull it so water goes though the filter. It produces great tasting water instantly without having to wait for the water to fill up the tank, go through a pitcher or etc.

It is a two stage filter but actually has three stages. The first stage is a combo of sediment and GAC so it is more effective than other two-stage filters in the market. This week I got replacement filter cartridges directly from vendor''s website and got 30% saving. This makes me totally forget about Watts . It is not too difficult to open the housing using the provided wrench. Before tightening it up, I apply some Vaseline on the rubber seal to make the job much easier.

The vendor''s websites says that the unit can be hooked up to refrigerator with a kit. I bought the kit. It took me about 30 minutes to move it from the sink counter to the back of refrigerator. The result is amazing. Now I enjoy crystal clear water directly from refrigerator water dispenser. And ice does no longer have any "flavor". I really love this filter. I''ve finally found a product that meets my needs, affordable and convenient, and provides great tasting clean water with ease! And the cost of replacement filters is only about $20-$30 a year. Go get one!

I used this in my kitchen for a water dispenser. I actually bought a different faucet along with a water heater so I have both cool and hot filtered water coming out of the dispenser. Hope it extends the life of my water heater.

One item to note. Be sure to install it where you can move it into a bucket when changing the filter. It comes apart and all the water spills.

The flow of the water is very adequate for filling mugs and getting some cool filtered water to drink.

I really liked the specs for the filter as it appears to do so well I felt comfortable not buying a reverse osmosis unit, which is what I originally thought I would do. I didn''t like the waste water of the osmosis unit too.

Excellent flow rate. I have one on the 45'' sailboat and one in the kitchen at home. Eliminates all taste and odor from the water. Easy to install. Home unit sits on the cabinet floor in the back of the cabinet so little usable space is lost although unit can be mounted off the cabinet wall if needed. Filters last a long time. It would be nice if they offered more upscale faucet designs in various finishes.
