Black & Decker DCM2500B SmartBrew Coffeemaker

Black & Decker DCM2500B SmartBrew CoffeemakerBecause we''re serious about our coffee, we sold our old $100+ Cuisinart coffeemaker to be replaced with this much better designed and much easier to use coffee maker.

A motel room we stayed at had this model coffee maker. We used it twice a day for 10 days. The coffee was delicious and we found no minuses at all, so I bought one. We''ve been using it daily now for about three months.

The carafe is made of heavy duty glass and doesn''t drip at all. The hole to pour water into is large and easy to get to. There are convenient and accurate water level windows on both sides of the unit. The controls are convenient, easy to understand, and easy to use. The basket is easily removed for cleaning, easy to position, and uses standard flat bottomed filters. The time and function displays are large and bright. All of these are comparative problem areas in the Cuisinart.

Programming works perfectly and is so simple to use we didn''t need the manual. To set the time of day press the "Hours" button until it reaches the current hour and then the "Minutes" button. To set the "Auto on" time, press the "Program" button, and then set the start time the same way. Press the "Program" button again to go back to time of day. For auto start, press the "Auto on" button, which lights up. That''s it.

In addition, the water enters the drip chamber in a shower rather than a stream, resulting in consistently smooth and uniform tasting coffee. I can''t comment on the warming plate because we put what we don''t drink immediately into a Thermos for all day use. The warming plate shuts itself off after two hours if you forget.

The negative reviews are a puzzle to me. We found none of the problems mentioned.

This is an addendum in mid Nov, 2007. The coffeemaker still makes perfect coffee and everything works like new. The only negative I''d add is that the warming plate is quite rusty, probably because I put a pot of tap water on it at night to have chlorine free water in the morning. Often the pot is damp. When we need to replace this coffeemaker, I''ll paint the new warming plate with bar-b-cue paint before the first use, for rust protection.

This is an update, dated 11/20/07. The coffeemaker still works perfectly and still looks good. I sanded the rust off of the base plate, painted it with bar-b-cue paint, and as expected there is no more rust problem. I don''t think the rust would occur for most people. I caused it by putting a wet pot on the plate overnight seven days a week.

I drink lots of coffee in lots of places. I''ve had the terrible plasticky coffee from the $10 drippers and very fine pressed coffee from the shops.

This is my third Black & Decker (more on that later) and continues to benefit from design upgrades and improvements. I found this dripper to be the top of the line inexpensive coffeemaker. Mine came with the resusable filter, but I find that using the disposable filters (for me) makes a slightly stronger and better coffee.

The program feature was a little counter-intuitive for me, but only took 30 seconds once informed to master. Wake up to my coffeemaker''s aroma. Warning: The first time I tried to make coffee, the carafe didn''t push the sticking, new drip basket arm in and I had a little overflow. Apparently, it was because the machine was new and it now works flawlessly. But you might want to make sure it drips properly the first time or two you use it.

I mentioned earlier that this is my third machine from this family. It''s not Black & Decker''s fault that I live in an area with extremely hard, unprocessed well water. All water processing appliances (like my water heater) get clogged up with time, even with proper maintenance. These machines have lasted better than the old, bottom line machines I started out with, and longer than a more expensive one I bought.

Since the trend seems to be the production and purchase of items that make phone calls, play mp3s, serve as calulators, take pictures, play movies and change the cat litter box, this coffeemaker may not impress some people. It just makes coffee. It uses normal coffee filters (the flat bottom type), brews the coffee and turns off the warming plate after two hours. It does not do anything else. I, personally LIKE that. After all, how many mp3 players does one need? What kind of tech-crazy person wants to make phone calls on their coffee maker? Who can talk before they have had their first cup of coffee in the first place?

If you are looking for a coffee maker that just makes coffee and does it rapidly and without any complicated instructions that must be followed (who can follow complicated instructions before their first cup of coffee, either?) then this would be a good choice. If you want to film a movie with your coffee maker, this is not the coffee maker for you.

We have used this maker daily for about three years. The Good:

Timer, decent coffee (once you get the balance, keeps coffee hot, Pour and serve and reliable. The Bad: Steam leaks onto the burner which has rusted, takes more coffee than others on the market, overflows if you grind your coffee too fine or if basket is not aligned correctly. Overall we are happy with the coffee maker and it is still serving us well.

I agree with the reviewers who have said "what is the fuss about?". This is a GREAT coffee maker. I have had no problems at all so far and having owned several different brands previously, I would say this one is the best I''ve owned for being so inexpensive.

The automatic setting is really fantastic as you can set the maker to make coffee whenever you need it to. You don''t have to use this feature and if you want to, you can make coffee in the pot even if you have it set on the automatic feature and the automatic settings won''t be disturbed.

The coffee stays hot in the pot for a long time and doesn''t get any of the overdone or burnt flavor that I''ve experienced with some other makers.

I haven''t had a single problem with drips from the pot and think that it does a really fine job when you pour. I don''t know what some people''s problem is with this feature. I think maybe it says more about the sloppiness of those pouring than the design of the coffeemaker!

I can''t say I''ve used the interrupt feature because this machine doesn''t take long at all to brew a pot and I have not needed to interrupt it in order to grab a quick cup.

I honestly don''t know what the negative reviewers were expecting. This is a fine machine that does the job and is a great value for all of its features. It also looks great in the black model and fits very nicely in my stainless kitchen.

I highly recommend this coffeemaker! I am so glad I ignored the negative reviews because this machine works great and was a bargain.

IMUSA GAU-18200 Elecric Espresso / Cappuccino Maker Save 13% Off

IMUSA GAU-18200 Elecric Espresso / Cappuccino Maker with Milk Frother 4-Cup, BlackI ordered this to replace a Bialetti stove-top maker. I have had it a couple of months and it is great. I saw some reviews about some machines within this price category being flimsy and unreliable. The Imusa is terrific. Easy to clean (Bialetti was awful!), and makes up to a quad in under 5 minutes. It is lightweight, but sturdy; and makes thick rich foam, even with skim milk. I am a former chef and have had some fancy machines that cost thousands of dollars in my kitchens, Imusa gets it done for me at home. I even went back and ordered a second as a gift.

Adding on to this review: If you haven''t been using your old espresso/cappuccino maker because it isn''t easy, or a pain to clean up, then this is the machine for you.

I''m going to start out stating I am no barista.

But I love coffee and simply don''t like paying $4+ a cup and inconveniencing myself in the morning making an out-of-the-way, time-consuming stop during my commute.

That said, this is my first espresso machine. As with many things I don''t know if I''ll ever use again, I purchase the absolute cheapest low-end model, and if I like it, I research and splurge (or ask Santa.) I feel I really lucked out with this machine since it cost half of other machines I was looking at, and it works. I followed the directions (and a youtube) and with some trial and error (actually only the first try was really bad) I am able to make espresso mocha''s in the morning for my wife and I.

I''ve gotten so good at it that I can make two cups with ~2 shots each, a squirt of chocolate syrup each, about 10oz steamed milk, and clean it all up in under 10 minutes.

Notes and experiences about this machine:

-When you first receive the machine, fill and drain the machine numerous times with hot water (by filling and turning the entire machine upside down.) Mine had a bunch of metallic flakes inside the steam chamber left over from manufacturing. These could definately clog the machine or worse, end up in your espresso.

-Use mildly fine grounds and tamp softly. I wasn''t getting any crema until I used a burr grinder on a medium-fine setting. This machine has NO control over the brew group pressure, so the only way to control extraction is with the grounds and tamping pressure. I was using too fine of grounds for the first week or two and was getting weak extraction. If tamped too hard the grounds overheat and the extraction is bitter. Ideally each shot should take 20 seconds.

-The control dial has a "dead zone" where steam continues to come out, but the boiler is off. It is between OFF and LOW STEAM settings. This allows you to safely release pressure in the boiler chamber when you''re finished. Never leave the machine sit with pressure in it. The instructions don''t mention anything about this ''hidden'' setting, but you will find it and use it every time you use the machine for one reason or another.

-Tamping the grounds is important. At first I used my fingers. Then a spoon. Finally I got a tamper. All of them were effective but a tamper makes me feel like a pro and its definately the fastest/easiest. 50mm is a good fit. Not perfect, but good enough; in reality its probably a 51mm or 52mm.

-Don''t use the rubber guard for the frothing wand. It''s hard to clean. Not just hard, impossible. Also, if not removed and cleaned after every use, it will for sure trap bacteria; it obviously needs to be removed to clean your frothing wand, which you want to clean while its hot so stuff doesn''t cake on it, defeating the entire purpose of protecting you from burns since you need to deal with the hot wand, anyway. Just throw this thing away.

-Clean it while its HOT. I rinse and wipe everything right after a session. The steam wand, grounds cup and locking cup, the collection cup and the waste tray all rinse clean with no soap when they''re hot. The steam wand takes about 10-15 seconds of wiping to get milk residue off; everything else takes a few seconds.

For the money, this is one great little machine. It heats quickly, foams the milk easily and promptly, is easy to clean up, and looks cute on the counter. This is our fourth (and least expensive) cappuccino maker it is also the best.

Especially for the money, this is a great little espresso machine! I''ve never had an electric espresso machine before. I have several manual espresso makers but no way to easily froth hot milk so I ordered this one. I received it yesterday and made a wonderful latte last night for the first time in my life! It''s easy to use, looks cool and has a small footprint so it''s great in a small space. (It did not say anywhere to remove the soft black plastic ''cover'' on the steaming rod but I did...I don''t want ANY plastic of any kind near my food, especially steaming hot plastic. I''m assuming you remove it else there''s no way to clean the rod...) It''s a perfect ''treat yourself'' gift to yourself when you know you deserve it!

If anything goes awry, I''ll certainly update this review but I feel good about it and it works just like I''ve seen my daughter''s much more expensive coffe/espresso/cappuccino maker. I''d NEVER consume name brand commercial coffe store, overly sweetened and overly fat and chemical ladened products, and I cringe when I see so many people putting that inside their bodies, but if I were one of those people, this would pay for itself within a week! (Can you tell I''m a cancer survivor and that I want to keep it that way!)

The metal water basin contains lead. I recently purchased this espresso maker and at first really liked it as it does the job, and I made delicious decaf lattes with it. The plastic on the outside is number 5 which is considered generally safe, but I was unsure about the metal used on the inside. I recently bought some lead test kits and decided to test the metal on the inside of the opening where you pour the water in. I highly doubted that it would be positive, because who would put lead in a machine that makes beverages especially that part that holds the water you drink?!!! But, because I am pregnant, I decided to check it just in case. Anyhow the test turned red which means it has a dangerous level of LEAD! I am so angry that they have this product on the market. Not only did they put lead in my body and my babies body, they are poisoning everybody who uses it. I already drank 3 lattes using this machine before my lead tests arrived in the mail. Amazon, please do not sell this product.

Squeegee for Hoover FloorMate H3000 59177047

Squeegee for Hoover FloorMate H3000 59177047My old Hoover Floormate 2800 had lost suction and I discovered that the squeegee on the nozzle had pretty much disintegrated. GoVacuum''s service was great and the replacement squeegee arrived in a couple of days. The squeegee is easily replaceable and is held by three easy-to-remove screws. Once installed, the cleaner began sucking up the water as it had when it was new. My cleaner model is very old and no longer available, but this squeegee fit perfectly. In general, replacing parts is cheap, easy, and much better for the environment!

Replacing the squegee is a easy fix--undo 3 screws to remove it from the housing, slide the new one into place, replace the screws. Makes a floor cleaner that is several years old work like new again.

Life Ionizer 9100

Life Ionizer 9100I bought the 9200 model after returning a lower model that was defective. That one would not turned off. The 9200 had just come out so I purchased that. It was difficult to install and leaked. The second plumber finally was able to stop the leak. A few (3 or 4) months later the filters started to leak. They sent new gaskets and continued to leak. After numerous calls for service and he talking to the plumber he recommended I send it back for repairs. I sent it with insurance and paid over 75 dollars to ship. It was returned saying there was nothing wrong with the machine it must be the filters so they sent new filters. It worked well for another few months and it is leaking again from inside the machine this time. This time they will send a label to send the machine back. I have requested my money returned so I can buy another type of product for the water processing. I am waiting to hear what "life time warrenty" means. I have suggested I may have gotten a lemon so just send another machine. Not possible. I have spent a large amount of money on plumbers and people to help me check the machine and help clean the water off the floors . My wood cabinets have a water marks and the wood floor have damage.

I believe in the concept of the machine and have liked how I feel when I drink the water when the machine has worked but it has not worked for 25-35% of the time I have had the machine and I have had it less than a year. There has to be a way to return a lemon and get a new machine. I will return it again and see how it will work when I get it back in a few weeks. meanwhile my RO can not be used so I will be on bottled water again. I would not buy this machine again until they have a better return policy or they have time to have a product that works.

When I first purchased my machine back in 2011, they were extremely helpful in both explaining the technical side as well as explaining the installation. It cost me $30 for a plumber to come over and hook it up because it was so simple The only reason I could not do it myself is because I am nearing the age of 60 and my eye sight is bad.

I have called three times so far since my original purchase date in 2011, and every time they have been extremely helpful. The first call was for technical support, and a man named Ricky helped me. The second call was because I needed a little more information about ORP, and the third call was to order my replacement filter.

When I called the third time, one of the sales representatives explained to me that they were going through a process of training the technicians to be more aware of their customer service roles in helping unsatisfied customers.

I have had great health benefits and I highly recommend Life because of their advanced technology above any of the other alkaline water machines.

These days there are a billion different bottled water options on the shelves with fancy bottles, names and catchy summaries and I USED to buy them. But when you add up how much you are spending and how much you are throwing away, it really made sense to me to buy a point of use water filtration.

Saying all that, I still wanted the best water out there.

I heard about ionized water from one of my friends, but most seemed overpriced or really cheap chinese knockoffs. After some long nights reading as much as I could about the different models, I narrowed it down to Life Ionizers and one other. I found that Life Ionizers had been in business for a long time, they have so many model choices and they have extensive filtration. Plus they have a lifetime guarantee on their units. Can''t beat that!

Spoke to a really helpful young lady over there who set me up with custom pre-filtration, some extra add ons and a fair price. The set up was super simple Only took me about 5 minutes to connect to my sink. I did have to call about how to use the drops for testing and the technicians were super helpful.

Now I tell anyone who will listen about all the benefits of the alkaline water ionizer and how helpful the Life folks were.

My advice is to talk to their experts, as they seem to know exactly what they are doing and are very helpful.

I did my study on these types of machines and there is a lot of information saying

how well they help people. I did find one review that was skeptical about the machines

but the person ended up selling some kind of drops to make the water more alkaline.

Anyway, I am here to tell you that I do feel better after using my life ionizer 9100 these

Last 11 months. Even my wife likes the water so I really did do the right thing!

Great product and there is a lot of useful information about the life brand and I liked

their warranty lifetime for the whole thing. Another company for less money had

a lifetime warranty but it was really only for 5 years tricky guys with fine print and

they didn''t tell me it was made in china till I read it and called them. Anyway, I like

my life machine

ZeroWater ZJ-003 Filtration Water Cooler Bottle

ZeroWater ZJ-003 Filtration Water Cooler Bottle with Replacement Filter 4 PackWater is so delicious I ordered a counter top pitcher to use in cooking. I had forgotten how good coffee tastes. Excellent product.

I loved the way it filtered the water. When the meter read 006, the water tasted WEIRD!! And the worse your water is, the less time a filter lasts. But, in the end, with having to filter 3-5 gallons a DAY for my family, and having water in yhr 270-350 ppm range, the price of the filters was astronomical. I buy water now from the local water store where they use RO and ultraviolet.

  • 11W UV Sterilization Lamp in Stainless Steel Housing (as compared to standard 6W UV).

I have two other reverse osmosis systems in my house but needed one that provided a greater GPD for a more demanding application. The water in my area ( GREAT LAKES ) has many minerals. After processing through the RO filter it comes out tasteless and ( literally) smooth. The only thing that I would have liked as an option would have been a larger storage tank. My stand alone ice maker uses a lot of water. If you have ever had an ice maker you may know what a chore it is to keep clean when you have really (HARD) water. I thought the freight charge was a bit high but this comes in a very large and somewhat heavy box.

The over all product is good. Has nice features and produces some good quality water. Glad I got the clear first cylinder to monitor the condition of the filter. Just after a month of use, the first filter has caught a bunch of small rust and sand particles. It''s crazy to know that this much debris is in my city tap water. The only reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5 is because the installation wasn''t exactly the easiest.

Super fast delivery, quailty construction and great tasting water for half the cost! Clear first stage helps with filter/water condition and viewing. Tubing color helps with system connections. Changing filters is a snap with easy connetions, provided cannister wrenches and drop in filters. Installation is simple if instructions provided are followed. You need toolsto install-drill, mine was a 5/8" metl drill bit for the hole for the faucet since my sink wasn''t set up with the extra hole and small drill bit for the drain line. Other tools included wrenches, pliers, awl (or soemthing to set drill bit location on metal sink), screw drivers and a torpedo level (to mount system level).

Recieved the unit well before time promised. Although it was packed well the input fitting on the first filter housing got broken, probably because the box looked like it was dropped on its side. No problem though as it is a threaded 90 and jambing a 10" flat blade screw driver into it got ot out. If this happens to you make sure to use 3 wraps of pipe tape on the new one. And guess what! You get 2 spares in the package. The instructions did not mention it but the little blue 3/4 ring on the fittings has a raised edge so it may be removed and the spider lock can be released so the tubing can be removed and the fittings reused. You also get 3 spares just in case.

This is only the first day of use and we will have water testing done as we are on a well but I expect good results and will add to this review as necassary.

As far as the supplier goes, Great support! Had to ask a couple of questions and E-mail response was excellent. When I sent an E-mail to make sure the broken fitting was threaded I got a phone call within an hour with an answer.

As of now I highly recommend this unit. If your water pressure is low buy the one with the booster pump.

It has been 5 1/2 months now and I can only rave about this unit. Ice maker doesn''t gunk up and the smell from the ice is gone. The cat fountain stays much cleaner and as an added beneflt we no longer need the filter in our table top humidifier which will save about $100 a season and very little cleaning is needed.

Gaggia 8002 MDF Burr Grinder Save 13% Off

Gaggia 8002 MDF Burr Grinder with Doser, BlackReal espresso is a combination of freshly roasted beans properly ground and pressed at high pressure using 200 degree water. When you do that, you produce something so delicious it''ll blow your mind if you love coffee. When purchasing equipment to do this at home, the most crucial of these three factors is in many ways the grinder. You need to be producing a very exact, very fine grind that doesn''t include larger chunks (it''ll mess up the pressure, because water will "channel" here) nor coffee dust (which will end up in your cup). And you kinda'' want a grinder that won''t break.

There are surprisingly few grinders sold that meet these requirements. Some espresso drinkers try to get by with one of the only two grinders under $150 which can sometimes manage this: the Solis Maestro and the Capresso Infinity. Whether you succeed will depend a lot on whether you got lucky, and you got one that happens to be put together well. Both make use of plastic parts which will fail over time. Some people buy the Solis Maestro Plus for $150 -it''s heavier than the Maestro, but otherwise no better: you''re really wasting your money. The next step up is the Gaggia MDF. It usually sells for around $200, and the Amazon price tends to fluctuate, actually coming in under $200 some of the time with promotions, which makes it a wonderful bargain, though that may be hard to fathom for folks used to a $20 whirly blade grinder. The MDF used semi-commercial grade steel burrs in a semi-commercial (and hence longer lasting) burr set. It will produce the even, fine grind necessary for espresso, and when paired with another Gaggia, or a Solis or Rancilio or FrancisFrancis machine, you''re ready to be a home barista and blow the minds of your friends. If you''ve got a bit more money, I''d recommend the Rancilio Rocky, which typically sells for $280: it''s quieter and more rugged, but uses the identical burrs to the MDF. Up from there would be the Mazzer Mini for around $360, which should last you 20 years if not a lifetime. Most people who get into home espresso eventually end up with a Mazzer someday, and you could save yourself some time and money by just starting out with one. But the MDF is probably the best bargain going for being a true home barista. If you''re terribly on a budget, Vaneli''s Maximo is inferior but useable, and sometimes sells here for low prices.

I''ve had this grinder for over two decades and it has performed well. When I first got my machine, I wondered which setting number would be good for cappuccino, or any particular grind. The manual said that since coffee can vary from variety to variety, or even from one roast to another, it''s a matter of adjusting to each batch of beans. Perhaps with 34 settings, people have found that to be helpful, but I have found my beans to be consistent enough that adjustments are necessary for type of coffee, but can be left alone for a particular type of coffee and a particular variety of beans from a source. At the time I got the machine, I got my beans from Peet''s back when they had five stores and no other distribution channels. Although they are a larger chain now, they are still small enough that roasting can be well controlled, and they can still buy beans from a single source for a variety to meet the needs of the chain. For beans from other sources, where roasting is done at a variety of locations, or from beans from differing sources, you might need to pay more attention to adjustments.

A much bigger issue that affects strength and everything else is the dosing. From reading the other reviews, it does not seem to have changed since I got my unit. The top of the unit can be filled with beans, and the part over the dispensing area will fill up with a remarkably consistent grind. That round area is divided into six sections, like a wheel with spokes. Five of the sections get filled with grounds. One section is empty, and is above the dispenser. Each time the lever is pulled, the wheel rotates one position clockwise, and one section gets dispensed through the empty section. In theory, if the unit were full, the amount of coffee in each section would be consistent. Chances are that in real life, you would not want to fill the unit up for home use, since the grounds would not be fresh by the time you use them. If you grind just enough for a few cups, then the coffee will not end up in the compartments evenly, and dosing by counting pulls will not work. If you lift the lower lid, you can see where the coffee is, and you will likely see a small mound in the back and partly filled areas toward the front if you grind smaller amounts. You could redistribute things with a brush, but even that way, some areas would end up more compacted than others. Or you could merely gain the experience to know how much was dispensed compared to how much you need, and pull the handle accordingly. Another option is to gring with the lower lid off. As you watch grinds fall into the compartment, you can rotate as each compartment gets filled, dispensing as you go along. Then you can become consistent once you develop a good eye for it.

Whether you want to consider the dispenser poorly designed is a matter of perspective. If you believe that this unit was designed to grind beans for two cups of coffee, then it would be a fair conclusion. If you believe that this unit was designed for people who prepare 6-12 cups an hour, you might think that it''s just fine. If you believe that it was designed for a higher level of fairly constant use, you would probably not be disappointed. But since this unit is most likely for home users, it''s hard to claim that the dispenser is ideally suited to the task.

Experience will let you know how high the grounds are supposed to be when you put them in the filter basket, and it''s not going to take you long to learn. While this unit is not fool proof, chances are that you are not a fool, so things will work out.

For me, the bottom line is that once you know the correct grind setting for your beans, the unit is more "set it and forget it" than what the instructions said, at least with consistent beans, but the dispenser is a lot less "set it and forget it" than what the literature implies.

Personally, I prefer a unit that takes the guess work out of getting the grinds to be the right consistency, since it''s easy to get the amount dispensed right by eyeballing it. This unit does very well in that respect.

I use this in conjunction with a Gaggia Coffee (now known as Gaggia Classic; the new Gaggia Coffee is a different machine) and the two make a good pair. Learning how much coffee to dispense is a minor part, compared to learning how long to hold the switch on the espresso machine, or how to froth milk perfectly, but ultimately, it boils down to knowing how to make a proper espresso. If you can tell when to stop the water based on the color of the coffee coming out, then a bit more or less from the grinder will affect how full the cup gets rather than the taste of your brew. You can''t automate a perfect espresso, but you can use the correct tools to allow you to make one with experience.

Buy Gaggia 8002 MDF Burr Grinder Now

The Gaggia MDF fills a small, yet demanding space between the cheap and typically terrible $30-$100 burr grinders and the $500 Mazzer Mini. It''s only real competition is the Rancilio Rocky and the Innova (if you can find one).

The main complaint about the MDF is that it is not continuously adjustable, which is true, however I have been able to position mine easily in the middle of two settings. This effectivly doubles the available settings and--with variations in tamp pressure--allows me to get really decent shots fairly consistantly.

I use this machine with my vintage swiss Elespresso machine (a Solis SL70 in disguise) and am consistantly pleased. It compares favorably with a Mazzer Mini on most days (I''ve got one of those too--as well as a La San Marco/Rossi) and for the price is a great buy. If you see a Rocky for the same price, that might be a better choice because of the larger number of settings, but only just.

For those not wanting to drop at least $300 on a grinder, this is a great choice. It fixes all the major faults of the Solis at only a few dollars more and is solidly made, reasonably consistant, and compact enough to sit next to most home machines on the market. Now if only it were a bit easier to clean...

If you are reading this, you probably already know why a burr grinder is the only kind of grinder to get if you want to make good espresso (or coffee for that matter). And in the world of burr grinders, I think this is the best value out there.

The Good: The grind is excellent and very consistent. It''s a work horse and will get the job done every day, all day, the same way.

The Bad: The doser is worse than useless. Not only does it not do what it is supposed to do, it makes it a pain to grind large amounts of beans for a pot of coffee (as opposed to a shot of espresso). Easy work around though: rather than hitting the doser lever twice (which if it worked perfectly would dispense 14 grams of coffee just the right amount for a double shot), I just pull it until my portafilter is overflowing, level the top into a small bowl, and get on with the tamping. Also, some people feel the gap in grinds is too great (i.e. the jump from setting 5 to setting 6 increases too much) I''ve only found that to be a slight problem, and only with very picky beans. Hasn''t been enough of a problem for me to complain about at all.

The Rest: The price is right. $200 bucks (less with a coupon) and you are in the high-end coffee game. Sure you have the doser issues, but that doesn''t effect the quality of the grind which when it comes right down to it is the only thing that matters. The cheapest quality grinder that comes in a doserless design is the Rancilio Rocky, which is a great unit it''s just that a) it costs about $85 more and b) isn''t sold by amazon.com so no free shipping.

All in all, in a non-commercial setting I don''t feel it''s worth the extra dosh for the Rocky. For value and grind quality, this bad boy is 5 stars take away 1 for the bad doser design.

I say buy it.

Let me preface this review with the following statement: I consider myself a grinder novice. I''ve been making French Press coffee for the past 4 years, but this is my first grinder purchase. Up until now, I had let the coffee shop grind the beans (Oren''s Daily Roast, mostly). Why the sudden urge to finally cough up the money for a quality home grinder? The answer is simple: a 5-pound bag of Jamaican Blue Mountain beans (picked up in Jamaica @ duty free). Ideally, you want to grind your beans just before brewing to have the best flavor, so I started shopping for my new grinder.

After spending at least a week sifting through reviews on this and other coffee sites (coffeegeek, coffeekid, ect.), I purchased this grinder with high hopes. I had considered the Solis Maestro Plus as a lower-priced alternative ($149), but opted to pay the minimal additional cost to take a step up to the Gaggia ($200). Also, there was a $25-off coupon on a Friday Home and Garden sale, and I figured it was worth the cost (purchase price: $175 after $25-off, plus free 2-day air shipping with a trial of Amazon Prime).

FIRST IMPRESSIONS:

The unit arrived in 3 business days, the delay a result of Memorial Day weekend. The most interesting thing I noticed when unpacking it was the presence of coffee grinds in the box. I then found the notice in the box that stated that this was not unusual, as all grinders are tested with actual coffee beans. I found this to be an excellent show of quality standards. The machine has a decent weight to it for its size, and takes up minimal counterspace (a big concern if you have a NYC apartment).

ON GRINDER SETTINGS:

There are 34 grinder settings: 1=fine (Espresso) and 34=coarse (French Press); the setting is adjusted by rotating the top. As I do not own an espresso machine (yet), I''ve only experimented with the coarse settings (32-34).

USING THE GRINDER:

Use is simple enough. Load the beans into the top, pick a grind setting, and turn on the power. There is no timer on this machine, so it will grind for as long as you keep it on.

The grinds are then deposited into the doser. You then pull the lever on the side of the doser to deposit the grounds into the FILTER HOLDER (read below). Each lever pull is supposed to deposit 7 grams of grounds (the amount recommended for a single shot of espresso). If your doser is not full, the first couple of pulls will not contain 7 grams of grounds.

Noise isn''t a real issue. I wouldn''t call it noisy, especially when compared to a blade grinder. But it IS a grinder, so a little noise has to be expected.

ON THE DOSER:

-First, there is no mechanism on the machine to catch the grounds deposited by the doser, only a FILTER HOLDER. This is essentially two "arms" below the doser meant to hold an espresso filter in place while you fill it (and most espresso filters should fit).

If you do not own an espresso machine, this may be a hassle. For making my French Press coffee, I have found that my half-cup measuring cup fits perfectly in the filter holder. This is fine for small amounts, but to grind enough to make larger amounts of coffee (like a pot), you would need to grind until you fill the doser, then dose over and over until you have enough grinds. It can get a little messy, but you''re working with coffee grinds, so a little mess isn''t unexpected.

NOTE: The doser is NOT removable.

-Another note about the doser is the possible effect on quality/taste.

Leaving ground coffee in the doser exposes it to air, which over time will reduce the quality of the flavor of your coffee.

This issue is not restricted to this brand/model, but it should be a consideration of anyone willing to spend $200 on a grinder.

To deal with this, you either have to: 1) grind just as much as you need, then dose until the doser is empty, or 2) leave some grinds in the doser. Option #1 will require some experimentation in grinding time, as there is no timer. Option #2 may not be a big deal, but if you spend this much on a grinder, then you should be getting your money''s worth in fresh cups of coffee. (This hasn''t been a concern for me, as I grind several days'' worth of beans at a time, then vacuum-seal and refrigerate. If this is available to you, I highly recommend it.)

ON THE GRIND:

I''ve had my model for about 2 weeks, and I''ve had excellent results. I''ve taken the time to research the acutal burrs used in various grinders, and have found nothing but good things about the ones used in this machine. The ground is uniform each time, and works very well for my French Press (setting #32, a little more than one rounded tablespoon per 4 ounces of 200 degree filtered water, brewed for 4 minutes. I''ve noticed an immediate difference in taste with grinding my beans immediately before brewing, and static in the grounds has been negligible.

If you''re reading this, then chances are you haven''t convinced yourself to shell out $250 for a Rancilio Rocky (or even more for a Mazzer Mini), but you don''t want to deal with the issues of the Solis Maestro and the like. As someone who values a balance between cost and value, I figured that the quality was worth the extra money. Thusfar, I''ve been having some great coffee, and I''m sure it will only get better with more experimenting. Aside from the workarounds required by the doser (dropping the rating to 4), I''ve found this to be an excellent product.

Update 8/2/2006: Regarding grinding time, I''ve found that grinding roughly one second per ounce of water of coffee for my French Press has given me great results.

Aprilaire Humidifier Maintenance Kit for 600 series

Aprilaire Humidifier Maintenance Kit for 600 series
  • 1 # 30 pad
  • 1 #4330 Scale Control Insert
  • 1 #4331 Yellow Orifice
  • 1 #4004 Strainer and 1 #4335 Feed Tube Assembly
  • 1 #4331 Distribution Tray and 1 #4223 Drain Spud

I really just ordered this for the bracket and tray, but getting all the extra parts was nice. I''m hanging on to them for future replacement. This came with all the pieces to those attachment from the solenoid to the humidifier (plus a new hose, which is not included in the product pictures), the gasket for the base of the humidifer for the drain tube, a new pad, the black bracket and tray.

The pad is a branded Aprilaire replacement pad. I''ve been using off-brand for years, this is actually the first time I''ve even had a branded pad since it was new.

The bracket was 100% identical to the bracket I replaced. I didn''t really need to do so, but the old one was funky with deposits on it so I figured I didn''t need it anymore.

The main draw here, for me at least, is the tray. The tray that came installed with my unit had nothing in its base to guide the water to distribute evenly. It was just smooth plastic. But the tray that came in this package has a pad across the bottom with grooves that I assume are meant to help with that even distribution. With my old tray, the water always seemed to pool on the left side (I think the unit isn''t 100% level) and occasionally spill over the top. So far, this new tray seems to work much better.

I could not possibly tell you if these parts are all Aprilaire OEM parts, nothing came in a branded box but the humidifier pad. But every piece seems to be of identical quality and construction. The only difference is the tray. If this tray is an OEM Aprilaire product, then I would love to know what was used in my original install. Regardless, the tray is great!

Everything needed to perform maintenance. Worked great. Installed the kit in 30 minutes tops. I recommend this kit. word word

Worked great for me. When my home was in property management as a rental, my tenants accidentally threw away the filter bracket. When I moved back into my home, my AC repairman serviced my unit and noticed it was missing. For the company to replace was almost $200. I purchased the kit for under $40 and did it myself in about 10 minutes.

  • Activated Carbon Block
  • ATS resin for lead reduction
  • Chlorine, cycts, bacteria, organics reduction filter
  • For use in pressure filters-common replacement filter for the Doulton HCP, and Doulton HIP. Manufacturers part #W9123053

For years I paid for bottled water. When I had to start living on my tiny Social Security check, I went to the National Sanitation Foundation''s website and compared all kinds of filter systems. The Doulton System, which filters both chemicals and live organisms, has either the exact same NSF rating or BETTER rating than some of the systems out there which cost $500 and up. I have been using it for over a year now, have saved hundreds of dollars on bottled water, and the Doulton filtered water is crystal clear and tastes fabulous. The other reviewer who says the little part broke off the bottom, he must have been very rough with his filter. You do have to take the thing apart every so often to clean off the filter, but I have never had a problem with it breaking. I do admit though, that It is kind of gross to clean it, but you need to do that because the flow of water decreases when the filter needs cleaning. I recommend this system as A+++!

The specs say that this is a very good filter. I have used one in my travel trailer for quite a while and never had any issues with water purity. Sadly, this purchase is to replace the one that broke after very little use. The nipple at the bottom snapped off, where it plugs into the filter housing. They''re pretty expensive to be that delicate. If the ceramic portion had been what broke, maybe I could understand, but this was the plastic part at the bottom! As for purchasing from Amazon, WOW what a slow delivery. I ordered it two weeks before an upcoming camping trip and had to take the trip without it, because it didn''t arrive in time. Since I paid for standard shipping, I was HIGHLY disappointed with the slow delivery.

I have been using these filters for about 15 years and they make a big difference in improving the quality of the water that comes from my tap at home. Water tastes so much better and smoother with this filter and there is absolutely no chlorine odor or any odor of any kind. I check the filter once a month because they do get brown with time from collecting impurities. All you have to do is clean it off under running water with a textured sponge and reuse it until it''s time to replace. When hurricane Sandy hit my area the water supply was affected and this filter literally turned black from all the garbage that was in the water supply. I didn''t even bother cleaning it, I always keep spare filters and I just replaced it with a fresh one. I''m sure that this filter prevented me and my family from getting sick.

BISSELL 58F83 Rewind SmartClean Save 28% Off

BISSELL 58F83 Rewind SmartClean, BlueI got this vacuum as a present, but logging on to amazon I''m a little (pleasantly) surprised at the price. I''m hugely impressed with this vac. Here are some of the things to consider:

1) Power. This thing has it in spades. You won''t believe what this thing will pick up. The first time I vacuumed my living room I found dirt...yes, as in earth... filling up the bottom third of the canister.

2) Clean sensor. The vacuum has some kind of sensor (optical I''m guessing) that detects when there is still dirt/dust in the air the vacuum is sucking in. When it doesn''t see any more dirt, the light is green, carpet''s clean. First time I used the vacuum the rug looked clean, but the red light told me "you''re not done yet". So see my comment in #1 about how much the vac picked up.

3) Weight. Nothing special. Not too heavy but the thing is made out of plastic.

4) Noise. You can still have a normal conversation while you''re vacuuming. You might have to speak up a bit but its not bad.

5) Hose and attachments. The hose detaches from the back of the brush head area and has an extension as well as an upholstery brush head and a narrow nozzle. The hose is pretty flexible and stretches for extra reach, but I honestly think it takes too much force. If you try to stretch it sideways to reach a corner, the vac may fall on its side.

6) Cleaning and loss of suction. Cleaning is easy. Slide a lever and it unlocks the canister, dump and go. As the canister fills up you''re going to lose some pickup power. The same happens when the air filters start clogging up. Which happens surprisingly fast. Maybe Dyson is on to something with this whole "no loss of suction" ad campaign. Bissel thought of it and has a little green-red slide indicator to let you know how much you''re losing (and when you have to clean it).

Wrap-up: This is a solid vacuum for the money. It may not pick up quite as much as my parents'' Dyson DC23 but it doesn''t cost $500 or weigh 20 lbs either.

I think that Bissell makes one of the better quality vacuums for the money. The key words here are "for the money." Because obviously if you''re going to spend much, much more for a Miele or a Sebo vac, then you''ll get a better product, but you''re certainly going to pay up for it.

The Bissell 58F83 vacuum is the 2nd or 3rd Bissell vacuum I''ve owned and I also own a Bissell carpet cleaner, so I have some familiarity with their products. There were some things I liked about this vac, and other areas where I would have liked to see some improvement. Let''s start with some good things about the 58F83 vac.

Good things:

It cleans very well. I vacuum my carpets pretty regularly and I was surprised at the amount of dirt and dust that it got out of my carpet. The primary purpose of a vacuum is to clean, and this one does in fact clean pretty nicely. It has a 12 amp motor, which is pretty beefy and gets the job done.

I like the clean carpet sensor. Sure, it''s kind of gimmicky, but basically this sensor consists of a big red light and a big green light on the front of the unit. If you see the green light, the carpet is more-or-less clean. If you see the red light illuminated, then make a few more passes until the light turns green. We could all live without this, but I think it''s a nice feature.

The vac is very easy to assemble. All that you have to do is remove the unit from the box and slide the top handle into the base of the unit. Then, insert one screw and you''re mostly done. You do have to plug in the hoses, but that''s very quick and easy. Truly, Bissell couldn''t have made assembly much easier.

The fact that the vacuum has a headlamp is a plus. Again, it''s a feature we could live without, but it definitely helps you to see what might be in front of you and assists with the cleaning process.

I like the price. As of this writing, this vacuum isn''t a whole lot over $100 shipped. This seems to be a very good value to me.

Most would consider the fact that the vac is bagless to be a good thing. I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, bagless vacuums can be convenient and save money on bags. On the other hand, vacs that use bags are a lot less messy and they essentially force you to change the filter each time that you change the bag. But for most people, they''d likely consider the bagless feature to be a plus.

Not so good things:

I don''t care for the retractable cord. It catches and doesn''t retract smoothly. In fact, I took this vacuum to the repair shop. They told me that these cord retractors are "cheaply made" and said that even if replaced, I''d almost certainly have the same problem and that I''d be better off not messing with the repair. I think that this retractor could easily break and again mine was quite sticky right out of the box. While it sounds like a good feature, I don''t believe that it is in practice. I would have preferred a more traditional non self-retracting cord. Hint: When retracting the cord, push the button quite firmly in the exact center of the circle and not on the sides of the switch. You''ll see what I mean.

I hate the location of the cord. It''s down low and I was constantly stepping on it or it was otherwise getting in my way and in the way of vacuuming. Bad placement for sure. I would have much preferred that the cord attach to the vac up high, so it wouldn''t be so obtrusive.

The on/off switch is located down fairly low on this vacuum to the point where I have to bend down a bit to turn it on or off. I would have preferred that they mounted the switch higher so that I could turn it on and off without having to bend over.

This vacuum is relatively heavy. On my scale, it weighed in at nearly 18 pounds. While I''m a fairly strong guy, even I found it a bit awkward due to it''s size and weight. If you''re a smaller person, it could be heavier than what you might like.

It''s very loud. Probably the loudest vacuum I''ve ever owned. I doubt it will damage your hearing or anything like that, but expect it to make a bit more noise than you''d anticipate.

I don''t care for the way that Bissell''s attachments connect to the hose. Essentially, it''s only friction that holds them in place. I''d much prefer that they connect in a more affirmative manner with either a twist or a click. I''ve written about this concern before and I see that things haven''t changed. I''ve had the wands fall off in situations where I had to contort, bend and strain to get to the wands during times where they''ve become disconnected in an inconvenient location, and it''s kind of a pain to deal with that.

Overall, I''d give this vacuum a 3 star rating. It''s not great and it''s not bad. It cleans very well and the price is attractive. But it does have some aforementioned issues that I am not crazy about. I do give it a qualified recommendation, but it has its flaws for sure.

Buy BISSELL 58F83 Rewind SmartClean Now

Bissel makes several vacuum cleaners that have very similar features. In fact, it offers several that are virtually identical, except for one or two small differences between them, and slightly different prices accordingly. I like the basic design very much, and recommend the product, but I suggest you look closely at two or three models to decide whether it''s worth the additional cost for a particular feature. In this case, the extra feature is a clean carpet sensor, described below.

I''ve used several Eurekas and Hoovers, and I prefer this vacuum cleaner. Here''s why:

1. It''s very easy to assemble. Ten minutes and a screwdriver, and you''re ready to go. Really, it''s that simple.

2. Great suction! When I first started using it, I was amazed at how much dirt it picked up from carpets I''d just vacuumed. It continues to perform on that level. I think you''ll be impressed when you see a layer of fine dirt at the bottom of the collection canister, with a thick pile of pet hair and other larger material on top. To maintain maximum suction, after several uses you should remove the filter beneath the canister (very easy to do) and wash both the filter and the sponge that surrounds it, and let them dry thoroughly (which takes about a day) before putting it back in. The loss of suction isn''t dramatic if you don''t, but it''s noticeable. The HEPA filter on the side of the machine isn''t washable, but it doesn''t collect much dirt; tapping it on a hard surface every once in a while is more than enough maintenance. (A reviewer or two has complained about the amount of dirt released when emptying the canister. I didn''t find it a problem. Just pay attention.)

3. The "turbo brush" attachment really works. It attaches to the end of the hose, and the suction running through it makes the smaller brush within it spin very fast and powerfully. I use it to remove pet hair from couches or my car interior, etc., and it''s great--much more effective than the typical attachments that just rub the carpet. Truly, if you have a pet this attachment is a real value.

4. It''s reasonably light, compared to other vacuums, and yet sturdy. The only mechanical issue I''ve had after several years of use is the need to replace the belt that turns the main brush after accidentally sucking up part of a bedspread--my own fault. Replacement wasn''t very difficult.

5. It''s easy to empty. Slide a lever to release the canister, slide out the canister, dump out the contents, and slide it back in.

6. No bags. Some people like the fact that bags contain the dust better than an open canister, which will release some dust when you remove it to empty it. For me, the hassle of making sure I have extra bags on hand, paying for those bags, replacing the bags, and the loss of suction as the bag fills outweigh that factor, and I''ll never go back to bags.

7. The price is reasonable. Perhaps because Hoover and Eureka are better known, the Bissells are very competitive.

8. This unit has a retractable cord. This won''t keep the cord at optimal length while you''re vacuuming--you still have to keep the cord out of the way--but it pulls in the cord after you''re finished, instead of having to wrap it. It will also let you play out a smaller length of cord if you''re vacuuming a smaller room.

Negatives:

1. The hose is neither very long nor very flexible, so when you use it either with the turbo brush or just to run along the baseboard, etc., it''s easy to pull the whole vacuum cleaner over.

2. Although Bissell touts the vacuum''s ability to suck up dirt very close to the wall, I''ve been unimpressed; I often end up using the hose for that. I can''t say whether other manufacturers'' models do a better job.

3. The feature that makes this model different from one that costs about twenty dollars less is a "clean carpet sensor" light that is supposed to change color from red to green when the carpet you''re vacuuming is clean. First, I don''t feel the feature is very useful even if it works; if I vacuum an area and see no more evidence of dirt, I''m fine with moving on. But in any case, I found the light unreliable. True, I didn''t use a microscope to determine how clean the carpet really was when the light changed color, but there were times when it wouldn''t change color no matter how many times I went over an area. To me, it''s a gimmick and not worth the extra cost.

All in all, a solid, easy-to-maintain, powerful vacuum cleaner, but I think most people will be just as happy with a slightly less expensive model with out the light indicating your carpet is clean.

I BOUGHT THE BISSELL REWIND SMARTCLEAN 58F8-3 VACUUM ABOUT 6 MONTHS AGO. WE HAVE 4 DOGS AND 4 CATS, SO THERE IS A LOT OF PET HAIR AROUND THE HOUSE. I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR A NEW VACUUM THAT WORKS REALLY GOOD AT CLEANING CAT HAIR OFF STAIRS. I HAD BOUGHT A BISSELL ABOUT 10 OR 12 YEARS AGO AND IT STILL WORKS GOOD, BUT IT IS OLD. I BOUGHT ANOTHER VACUUM A WHILE AGO, IT WAS SUPOSE TO WORK WELL PICKING UP PET HAIR, BUT IT WASN''T THAT GOOD. I SAW THIS VACUUM ON SALE AND BOUGHT IT BECAUSE I HAD SUCH GOOD LUCK WITH THE LAST BISSELL I HAD. I HAVE USED IT NUMEROUS TIMES CLEANING THE STAIRS AND THE OTHER CARPETS IN THE HOUSE AND IT WORKS GREAT EVERY TIME. IF YOU HAVE A PET HAIR PROBLEM OR CARPETS THAT GET DIRTY FAST, I WOULD DEFINATELY RECOMMEND THIS VACUUM. IT WORKS GREAT EVERY TIME.

I AM VERY IMPRESSED WITH THE PERFORMANCE AND FEATURES OF THIS VACUUM (auto-rewind, bagless, WASHABLE FILTERS, etc.). I decided to buy a Bissell about a 9 mos ago, since I hadn''t any experience with the brand and, side by side, it seemed a much more impressive machine than the comparably priced Hoover. I have been very pleased!

Yes, it IS fairly loud -but what is that to complain about? The suction is really powerful (almost comparable to a $2000 Kirby, imo) and power and growl go together. The construction quality also seems above normal for the present state of the industry (I''ve come to despise Hoovers, Dirt Devils, and three or four other brands I''ve tried) and I believe the warranty is better than normal, as well.

Bissell should be very proud of itself with this machine. Unlike most of their competitors (actually, all I am aware of) they have over-delivered, by a huge margin. The price just dropped on Amazon to $99 and so I decided to stock up. If nothing else I can give a few away for Xmas presents!

Stop looking for a better machine in this price range. I''m pretty sure you won''t find a better machine for even twice the price. I''m hoping this machine is an example, rather than an exception, of the Bissell product line. I would love to see the vendors of deliberately degraded vacuum brands driven out of business. For the price, and in comparison, this machine isn''t just good -it appears to be amazing.

---

update: EVEN BETTER than I expected! This machine has a THREE YEAR warranty and appears to have a new feature: a red/green dirt sensor which tells you when a floor or carpet is clean or still needs more work. For $99??? I will update my review if I am disappointed with the durability of the machines. But I don''t expect that because: (1) Companies don''t offer extraordinary warranties unless they are extraordinarily sure of product quality. (2) I note Bissell is an American company and the machine is made in S. Korea (not China -the land of garbage) and (3) THE CEO''s NAME IS BISSELL (he is the great grandson of the founder)! Now, that was a pleasant surprise which explains a lot: a CEO who has reason to care about the VERY long term reputation of the company because his name is on the line!! Wow. Do yourself a favor and support a company which DESERVES your business: BUY BISSELL!

Keurig Platinum Mini Brewer Save $0.04 Off

Keurig Platinum Mini Brewer - B31We received this brewer from our parents for Christmas, and I was immediately smitten. Easy to brew (easy to measure water, too, in my opinion). Coffee samples were a mixed bagsome too weak, some delicious, but that''s the beauty of the Keurig system, right? variety of brews to try?

Imagine my disappointment, then, when after exactly 6 brewed cups, the brewer would not work. The little brew button would blink as normal, then shut off without brewing. TroubleShooting section of the instruction booklet instructs to immediately call Keurig if this were to happen. Keurig Customer Service was very helpful and sent out a new unit in a week. I took the new brewer out of the box, and guess what?

DOA. It wouldn''t even brew a single cup! I had read about heating element problems with the Keurig line in general, and was sure I was one of the unlucky customers to experience this problem. Keurig CS was even more helpful this time, and we received our third brewer a week later.

Plugged in the new brewer, put the water in, inserted K Cup, and... nothing.

Out of sheer boredom, frustration, insanity, etc. I kept trying to brew.

To my great surprise, after a half hour of attempts, the heater kicked in, and the brewer worked! What the... ??

Then, a light bulb switched on in my head. Could it be that the refrigerated filtered water I was using didn''t allow the brewer to achieve brewing temperature? Keurig Customer Service never mentioned that it would be an issue, and nowhere in the literature does it say to use room-temperature water. Nonetheless, I switched to filtered tap and/or room-temp bottled water, and the little Keurig has performed like a champ.

So to all of you out there considering this little gem of a brewer, don''t use refrigerated water, and you will love the Mini Plus!

(Maybe I should have reached this conclusion with common-sense reasoning, but alas, this was not the case...)

I had been dying to get a Keurig coffee maker for a while and decided on this one after much research. I live in an apartment and the small size is perfect. Although you have to fill it every time you wish to make a drink, for my purposes, I can live without the reservoir. This is a perfect product for anyone who lives alone or lives in a small space. If you are looking for a Keurig maker to have while while some company is over, this could take a little longer to make coffee for your friends then you wish to take. However, all this said, I still think this is perfect for my needs. I do not drink a ton of coffee but sometimes love to come home and make a cup on a cooler/cold day. I have had no problems with it and love that I can fit larger mugs or travel mugs in the maker. Highly recommended!

I was super psyched about getting my Keurig. I had one in my former apartment that I shared with roommates and wanted one for myself when I moved in on my own. I thought that the little personal one would be perfect. The brewing function works perfectlyI have no complaints about the final product, however, it has various brew sizes and the function is very complicated to figure out. It is not clear how much water you are supposed to put in, nor how much you have already put in, and so it is always a little bit of a gamble as to whether or not your coffee is going to come out the way you expect it. I have had smaller coffee cups overflow and I have had larger coffee cups only get full halfway a number of times. My advice is that even if you are a single person living alone, go for next model up which has a more user friendly water measurement system.

I bought this for a recent birthday gift for my daughter, a very busy professional woman. She loves it! She has raved about it on every occasion since. I have never given her a present that she liked better than this. I was wary of it because I had read reviews that were not enthusiastic, and each cup of coffee is more expensive to brew than if one were doing a pot for several people. But, any drawbacks are far outweighed by the convenience.

I read about single cup coffee makers for weeks before I purchased the Keurig mini plus single cup brewer. I even read the "Consumer Reports" thinking that would be the best information available. The Keurig was not on their suggested list. I read their reviews and was disappointed. Then I went to Amazon.com to see how much single cup coffee makers cost. While on the site I decided to check out all of them; not just the ones suggested by Consumer Reports. The reviews by people who bought coffee makers online were the most helpful. The Consumer Reports reviews did not match reviews of people who bought them online; especially the Keurig. At first I was conflicted, but the more I thought about what people who acutally bought these said, the more I knew the Keurig mini plus was what I wanted. First of all I enjoy a good cup of coffee but I''ve never been able to make a good cup of coffee. Secondly my husband drinks regular coffee and I drink only decaf. so we needed a single cup maker. My decision was based on the reviews that said it didn''t take long to brew, I could use a permanent K-cup rather than the disposable already filled ones, it''s easy to operate, the coffee is always hot, the coffee tastes good and it''s an attractive appliance. I could go on and on. I have no idea if the second cup takes the same amount of time to brew because we never need more than one cup at a time, but some people have issues with that. The people who gave it bad reviews had requirements that weren''t important to me so I didn''t let those influence me. We''ve had the Keurig mini plus for about 3 weeks now and we both like it. It is convenient, no harder to make good coffee than any other coffee maker and it''s easy to operate. I''ve decided that the coffee maker itself isn''t as important in making a good cup of coffee as the person who makes it and the brand of coffee used. I''ve had to experiment with the amount of coffee needed to make it not too strong because that makes it bitter and not too weak because it doesn''t have much taste. Therefore, the most important factors IMHO is, the brand of coffee, the kind of grind, whether it''s medium or bold etc. etc. So for an easy, convenient single cup of coffee the Keurig mini plus was the one for me. I do not regret my decision.

The actual filtering action was effective but the enclosure (which costs at least as much as the filter itself) promptly developed cracks at the filter cover and faucet fitting. This happened in two separate occassions, so we''ve decided to give up on this product.

Can''t recommend it.

I''ve been satisfied with this filter up until now. About 3 weeks ago, it developed a crack in it. I have no idea why these PUR filters seem to crack alot, after reading several other reviews. I''ve never bumped mine or dropped it. The filters aren''t cheap to buy, but now the filter itself is cracked and i''m stuck with a couple extra filters. I may try to sell them on ebay. I won''t buy another one of these.

I''ve used this filter for years. They''ve always worked great. If you have a problem, just email them and they will send you a coupon good for a new one. I think the cracks are a new problem as I''ve never had that problem. I wrote them once asking if there was a kit to keep it from coming out both places at once and they sent me a coupon for a new one.
