This item is Hydro Life #HL-170 TF. The photo shown of this product is incorrect: it is a #3 and has threaded ends and no tube. Fortunately it is what I needed for my rig. It seems to work well at making drinking water taste good and it says it "significantly reduces" many contaminants that a carbon filter doesn''t. However, I cannot find any specific data. I even emailed Hydro Life but they never responded.

If you are near a Camping World and in their Presidents Club, it is $5 cheaper less any sales tax. It is about $8 cheaper at online RV suppliers but they charge $16 for ground freight. So if you are a Prime member, this is the best deal.

Mr. Coffee ECMP50 Espresso/Cappuccino Maker Save 28% Off

Like most who purchased this product, it was my first espresso maker. And I found out quickly that hunting for these things can be overwhelming! I purchased it at my local Target for $79.99 for convenience in case I had to return it -with all of the mixed reviews out there, I was incredibly weary of choosing one! However, I will most likely not need to do so. It is perfect for all of my needs!

PROS:

1. Incredibly easy to use! Directions and trouble-shooting pages in manual are simple and helpful.

2. Compact size, looks nice sitting on the counter.

3. Easy clean-up. All parts that need to be cleaned detach easily.

4. A standard sized coffee cup will fit under the spout -not so with many models!

5. The steam feature is simple, fairly powerful, and works well. No problems here.

6. As long as you get a good batch of coffee grounds, this machine can turn it into delicious espresso!

CONS:

1. I have been experiencing a small leak onto my counter after use. I haven''t caught it in the act yet, but if I return to the kitchen a few hours later, there is a wet spot near the machine. I read another review that mentioned the same thing, so it might be a universal issue with this product. However, it is a small leak, and not enought to cause a real problem in my opinion.

2. I would suggest making 2-3 cups before wasting any milk product on your first trial. This model does not have an automatic drip feature and you will need to manually tell it when to stop pouring. If you are not used to this, you might end up with a few nasty batches on your first try. No biggie. Just watch the color of the drip. It starts out as a medium brown, and changes to a much lighter brown if left alone. I would recommend shutting it off a second or so after it changes to the lighter brown. I have made perfect batches every time by this method. This all takes place over several seconds, so keep an eye out.

YOU MIGHT NEED TO KNOW:

It mentions this in the manual, but make sure to get the right size of grounds. About the consistency of salt. I would recommend griding your own either at home with a grinder or at the store at a grinding station. They taste better for one, and you won''t waste your money on a mystery bag that doesn''t work well with your machine.

Also, it does not come with a frothing pitcher. You will need to buy one separately. I purchased mine at Bed Bath and Beyond -a Krups one, stainless, about $10? It fits fine. Just make sure you don''t get one that is too deep, or the froth wand will not reach the milk. It is a countertop model after all. If you don''t want to use as much milk you can turn the pitcher at an angle.

That''s it! Definitely more pros than cons. I feel that for the price I paid, I could not have hoped for a better quality machine. I would highly recommend this model if you want something easy and you don''t require tons of frills. If you want something more frilly, go ahead and spend $300 to $3000 on one. But I purchased an espresso maker to SAVE time and money (so long, Starbucks!), and this one''s just right for me!

I received this for Christmas from my loving wife who noticed a slight cloud over my weekends since my espresso maker went out several months ago. I had the Mr. Coffee model previous to this one. It served me well for over a year with regular use before I learned the hard way about not overpacking the grounds.

After taking this one around the block a few times I have to say I''m extremely impressed with the design improvements they''ve made. Overall, this machine is a tremendous value for under $100 (mine was $75 on sale). You would really have to be a coffee snob (and have a lot of disposable income) not to love what you get for the money (I''m a poor coffee snob.)

To sing this machine''s praises, I''ll highlight the improvments they''ve made:

1) You no longer have to remove the water container to fill it up. It''s an awkward shape to try to fill from my refrigerator. So I just use my frothing pitcher and pour directly into it. This also chills the pitcher which is good for the frothing I''ll do soon.

2) I LOVE the top tray. I store my espresso cup, tamper (from the old machine the new one is the only downgrade I''ve noticed), brew basket, and espresso pitchers on it. Did I mention I love the tray? It''s a great design perk.

3) It still heats up quickly. A little faster than before for frothing.

4) They upgraded the design of the filters. Smaller holes that all converge into one hole on the bottom. Note: Don''t put these or the brew basket in the dishwasher you''ll tarnish them.

5) The bottom of the brew basket is really cool, the single hole from the filter drips onto a silicone (I''m assuming) cone in the basket which appears to guarantee an even drip between two cups of espresso. This only matters if you''re pulling separate shots. It may be overdesigned, but I think it''s cool.

6) There''s more clearance under the brew basket! You couldn''t fit a coffee mug under there before (which is why I have the two espresso pitchers). One (or two) fewer thing to clean!

7) The drip tray has two larger holes in the middle. When your espresso is done (and the machine is off) you can take out the brew basket (it''s bad for the valve to keep it there) and set it on the holes to drip and cool off before cleaning. It''s a brilliant improvement. Also, the drip tray has a spout on it to make it easy to pour out.

8) The frothing wand swings! Very cool.

Here are my tips (echoing other reviews).

-Read the directions first! It''ll last longer if you do.

-Make sure you use the correct roast and ground size and don''t overpack.

-Play with the brewer until you figure out how long you want to brew (I count to ten).

-Ditch the single filter. You''ll never use it.

-Get some demitasse cups.

-Get a frothing pitcher and use 1% milk.

-Ditch the rubber tip on the frothing wand. It''s useless unless you want to easily grow bacteria.

-After frothing, blow a little steam out the wand so no milk dries and clogs it. Wipe the wand with a damp towel shortly after steaming (it''s easier to clean when it''s hot).

That''s about it, folks. You get a lot of bang for your buck with this one. Even if it only lasted a year, I''d buy another one to replace it and I''d still save money over the more expensive models.

UPDATE AFTER ONE YEAR: I use it off and on and it''s still working well. The frothing works as well as it did day one. The espresso function works, but I made the mistake of pregrinding some beans at the grocery store with the "Espresso" setting. The machine struggled to force water through even with minimal packing (Next time I''ll try the next largest size). It also seems like the seal isn''t as tight as a year ago. That said, it still pulls a decent shot. For the money, I''m still pleased.

11 months ago, when I read the review of this product, I concluded that it was a great bargain that was likely to be defective when I received it or to fail a short time later. I trusted that the 12 month warranty would be protect me in that case, but I wondered if it would be worth the hassle if I had to use it.

Fast forward: I really like the product. I brewed probably 300 cups of espresso and it worked well. Then it blew a gasket. When I called Jarden, who now owns the Mr. Coffee Brand, the customer service rep assured me that the product was manufactured at least 3 years ago and was therefore not in warranty. He had no interest in my purchase receipt, dated 11 months early. When I refused the steam expresso machine that he offered me as a "one time courtesy" and because the comparable unit was "not in stock" I went to the Mr. Coffee website and confirmed that it was indeed in stock, for purchase. When I refused the replacement and insisted that because I had purchased the unit less than a year ago, that the company should honor the warranty. The response was that the unit was not in stock, and they encouraged me to check back with them in 4-6 weeks.

I''m sure many people give up at this point and the customer service objective of not paying warranty claim or paying them at a much reduced price is realized. I bought the product and the warranty. I didn''t realize until I needed it that the warranty was not actually included. When I asked for it, I was told that I didn''t really buy it. Interesting! I''m probably powerless to enforce the warranty. It''s certainly not worth any more of my time to try. But I can avoid buying another Mr. Coffee device and I can tell many, many people about my experience.

Don''t listen to the coffee snobs who say you need to spend hundreds (or more) for a good cappuccino machine! I didn''t get a machine for a long time because I figured they would be too complicated to use, time-consuming to clean, and the inexpensive ones would make lousy cappuccino. But Starbucks gets expensive, so when I saw this one on sale for $59.99 I figured all it needed to do was make 20 decent drinks to pay for itself. It has done that in a couple of weeks! Following the instructions, it''s very easy to use, cleaning is also quick and easy, and the cappuccinos and lattees come out great. It''s a huge plus that you can use regular coffee mugs, so who cares that it doesn''t come with little espresso cups? The ONLY negative is that it really should have come with a milk frothing pitcher, but I picked up an 8-oz. one at the supermarket for $1.99 and it works fine. If you are on the fence about whether or not to take the plunge on an inexpensive espresso/cappuccino maker, buy this one.

Okay, so there are a lot of mixed reviews on this product and if you are considering buying the Mr. Coffee ECMP-50, please give it a chance.

First of all I am no expert on this machine. I have just made my first Latte and am very relieved my machine works and the quality is what you make it as far as I''m concerned. Now understand this is my second machine! I just bought the ECMP-50 yesterday and upon setting it up, the machine only "flashed" it''s glaring lights at me and nothing more. I was a little disheartened but figured it was a lemon, and thankfully it was!

So today I exchanged my machine for a new one and yes it works just fine but lets'' look a little closer. So consider first off this is a low end espresso machine. $80... great price and honestly I don''t expect much out of this for this price range. I am just tired of going to Starbucks and spending $3 a pop on an espresso drink. So point #1...

1If you can get about 30 uses out of this machine... it just paid for itself. So if it breaks after that, who cares. Buy another one! It''s not a big deal.

The steamer is probably one of the better features of this machine in my opinion. To really have full control of it though your going to need to ditch the rubber tip and just get comfortable using the machine itself. The rubber end piece while a convenient way to help maintain cleanliness and create sub-par foam, is going to hinder the quality of your drinks... plus you lose that awesome "screaming" sound.

2-To properly steam your milk! GET A THERMOMETER! Yes you need this. Next you need COLD milk. Steam up to about 140-160 degrees depending on your preference and you should be good to go. To get quality foam you need not just cold milk but lift the steam wand to the top of your milk towards the end of your steaming cycle to just steam the surface.

I can''t comment on the leaking problem because I have not had this machine long enough but It sounds like a quick return to where you purchased it or sending it to Mr. Coffee should take care of this and all other structural/wear and tear defects. (hopefully)

So. Given my experience working at Starbucks for a few years I can tell you that after using this machine. Price does not matter. Starbucks espresso machines run from $5000+ easily and they break down a lot more than you think (also get used a lot more!) But think of this like a car. It''s a machine, it''s going to require maintenance and cleaning. Take care of it. Use clean filtered water to prevent build up. Run recommended cleaning solutions through your machine periodically to break down deposits. This is plastic, do not be aggressive or forceful with your machine. Treat it like a lady :)

What I don''t like?

-So far it''s just a minor inconvenience but turning the dial for the steamer setting with a required purge at the end is a little annoying. I''d rather be able to have a little more control over my steaming and be able to purge the wand myself afterwards. BUT the swivel on the wand is great, and I''m satisfied with the length and quality of it. My milk was the right temp (with thermometer) & did not take very long to do... and the foam was better than what I usually get handed at "the bucks".

-I don''t like that I cannot brew espresso & steam at the same time.

-I don''t like that the espresso will continue to brew until you turn the dial and make it stop. If your not paying attention you''ll overflow your shot glass and lose your crema :( very sad. Speaking of shot glasses? Get espresso shot glasses, they will indicate where you should stop the brewing process making sure you have the best quality espresso possible.

I know this is a bit long and I have a hard time reading long reviews but I hope this gives a little insight. This machine is worth the money and will be just as durable and reliable as machines that run in this price range up to $1,000. It''s frustrating getting a lemon but it happens. Don''t be discouraged.

Starbucks makes a great little home brew kit with 2 shot glasses, measuring scoop, clamps, steam pot, and thermometer for about $20 as well which is a great companion for this machine.

Oh one last thing. You can buy this at Target. So very convenient to not deal with all the mail-order delays if you have an issue.

Blue flakes formed in excess water beginning with second cleaning process within a two and a half week period (a pattern of three consecutive nights on, two days without use of humidifier throughout the 2 1/2 week period). Never happened during the previous two years of performance. Purchased two filters: Preparing to use second filter much sooner than expected (filters are advertised to be used for to two months with normal use). Hopefully, the second filter will meet with previous satisfaction, and only one refund will need to be requested.

Melitta Cone Filter Manual Coffeemaker 6 Cup

Being a lifelong coffee fiend, I''ve tried literally EVERY type and brand of coffee-making device known to mankind over the last 30 years: standard electric drip coffee makers, percolators (not recommended to anyone with an appreciation for coffee and functioning tastes buds), French presses, vacuum pump units, microwave gizmos for which one needs an engineering degree to figure out, etc., but I keep coming back to this one.

It''s definitely low tech, but it does what it''s designed to do, e.g. make a terrific pot of coffee with minimal hassle. Other reviews have described the process of using this as being additionally cumbersome (given the need to boil water separately beforehand} but I don''t personally find that to be the case. I keep a teakettle of filtered water on my stovetop, and when I''m ready to make coffee, I turn the burner on, and while the water is heating, I measure the coffee out, and then once the water is near boiling, simply pour over the grounds. The entire process takes about five to seven minutes, start to finish, about the same time as an electric drip unit would take.

The unit -which essentially works similarly to more stylish (but also considerably more expensive) Chemex coffemaker -has several advantages over other coffee making methods: because the water is manually boiled, one can control the temperature; because the unit is so low tech and has no buttons, switches, bells, whistles or moving parts, it can last for decades (unless one breaks the glass carafe which, being on the clumsy side, I''d done more than once -but then they''re so inexpensive to replace that it''s really not that big a deal; also, the carafes of electric drip units are equally fragile); if one has a gas stove, as I do, coffee can be made, even during a power failure.

Cleanup is simple: toss the filter full of used grounds in the trash, and after the coffee is consumed, rinse out the filter cone and the carafe. There''s no reservoir to collect nasty sediments like an electric drip unit, no grungy screen and plunger to disassemble and scrub like a French press.

If a new coffee making technology is introduced, I will surely try it, but doubt I will find something else that is as inexpensive or reliable as the Melitta Manual coffee maker.

EASY OF USE

I''ve used the Mellita Coffee System for about 40 years. I find the system more convenient than coffee machines.

> It is easy to brew exactly the amount of coffee you want, and exactly the strength that you want---including adjusting to new roast and grinds. You can even mix caffeinated and decaffeinated coffees if you wish.

> In a way, the Mellita system is more "sanitary". It is easy to forget a used filter in a coffee maker, maybe for weeks if you go on a vacation, and find a fungus garden in there. You can''t ignore a used Melitta filter, because it is out in the open. If you forget a used Melitta filter, it and the coffee grinds just dry out. It is also much easier to wash the Melitta components---just a quick rinse under the tap is usually good enough. Caveat--some types of coffee are oiler than others---you may need to actually wash your cone and carafe if a quick rinse is not sufficient.

SIZE OPTIONS

The carafes for which the "6 cup" and "10 cup" systems can nominally hold 6 or 10 cups off coffee (filled to the brim), but that is really irrelevant. A more important consideration is cups vs mugs. How many people still drink "cups" of coffee? So, it is the "mug-capacity" (1 mug = 1 1/2 cups) of the filters and cones which really counts.

However, I don''t follow my own recommendation: In the morning, I want coffee "now!" I often run out of patience trying to brew even 1 mug of coffee using #4 filter/cones. On the otherhand, the #6 filter/cones holds a whole mug of hot water in one quick pour, and drains about as fast as you can continue to pour the water in---so I find it very convenient for brewing 1 to 2 mugs of coffee at a time, and on rare occasions to easily brew 4 mugs (6 cups) of coffee. However, in this case, the hot water has little time to extract the flavor from the coffee. To compensate, I grind my coffee very finely. I could simply use more coffee, but that would be wasteful.

The #6 filters/cones ("10-cup system") is faster and more flexible, at a slightly higher cost for the filters. Melitta Cone Filter Coffeemaker 10 Cup, 1-Count If you are patient and your space is very limited, such as in a camper, boat, or in a college dorm, or if you really want only 1 or 2 mugs of coffee at a time, #4 filter/cones (the so-called "6 cup system") is a good choice.

GRINDS OF COFFEE

If you usually brew the "recommended" or fewer number of mugs of coffee, then very-finely ground coffee is recommended. If you usually brew the the "recommended" or more number of mugs at a time, then a medium grind coffee may work best. Most supermarket "fine grind" is actually a medium grind. If you brew more than the "practical maximum" a medium-coarse grind will work better. If you grind your own coffee in an electric grinder, "coarse" is only a second or two, medium-fine is perhaps 10 seconds, and very fine is perhaps 30 seconds, until the pitch of the sound changes, indicating that no more grinding is taking place.

REUSE

If you use very-fine grind, then discard the used filter when finished (because most of the flavor will be extracted, and the filter will be clogged up by the fine grinds). If you use a medium grind, then you can optionally reuse the grinds in the afternoon to make a second batch of coffee (which will be lower in caffiene). Coffee-freaks may object to reusing grinds, but it works just fine.

FORMULA

Regardless of the grind, you have to use the same formula for the TOTAL amount of coffee actually made, i.e., 1 to 2 tablespoons of ground coffee per mug, depending on your taste, brand, etc.

FILTERS

Presumably, brown filters are easier on the environment---and on you, less chemicals having been used to manufacture them. Unfortunately, #6 filters are hard to find in most grocery stores, but easy to purchase via Amazon. RECOMMENDATIONS ON MAKING GOOD COFFEE

>>Use fresh unchlorinated water if possible. Do not use "softened", "sparkling", or "mineral" water. If you let an open pitcher of water sit on a counter for a few hours (or overnight), most of the chlorine will evaporate. The best way to get pure water is a reverse-osmosis system. Bring the water to a quick boil, but don''t leave it boiling too long--that will flush out the dissolved oxygen, leaving the coffee tasting flat.

>>There is a huge difference between brands and roasts. Experiment and enjoy. However, even more important is freshness---which is the greatest challenge. How can you know if the coffee is fresh? The easiest way is to signup with a service such as Gavelia, Boca Java, or Coffee Bean Direct--whose only business is providing you with freshly roasted (and freshly-ground if you wish) coffee.

SAFETY

It is easy to forget the glass carafe on a hot stove. I broke at least 6 carafes before I purchased a whistling teakettle. Revere 2-1/3-Quart Whistling Tea Kettle NEVER use the carafe to boil water or reheat coffee. The flood of water might crack a ceramic stovetop, or put out a the flame of a gas stove---both causing catastrophic problems. Use your microwave to reheat (1 mug of coffee = 30-45 seconds); it''s faster and safer.

It is important to take care to pour the boiling water into the filter, not between the filter and the filter cone. It is any easy accident to make. To minimize such accidents, fold over the "joined" edges of the filters so that the filter opens wider. If you are a particular klutz, a quick rinse with a little cold water before you add the ground coffee can "glue" the filter to the cone.

SUGAR IN YOUR COFFEE?

Purist insist that coffee should always be drank black. While I tentatively agree, I can''t. My taste-buds are overly sensitive to bitterness. However, I have found that pure Stevia Pure Stevia Extract Powder by Kal 3.5 oz is a good replacement for sugar for me. Oddly, it isn''t as sweet as sugar, but is just as effective in cutting the bitterness, which is what I really need. Truvia and other brands in packets or described as "spoonable" contain bulking agents which effect the flavor and leave a yucky residue, and are comparatively expensive. KAL Pure Stevia contains no bulking agents and is very economical.

SALT IN YOUR COFFEE?

It''s a naval tradition. I''ve found that a few grains of sea-salt in a cup of light-roast coffee can be pleasant, but not so compelling that I make a habit of it. However, a little salt is more noticeable (in a good way) in ice coffee.

MILK IN YOUR COFFEE?

If the purpose is just to cut the acidity, then you need to try a different coffee or brewing method. If the purpose is to cut the bitterness, you might want to try stevia instead. If you simply like milk in your coffee---I say, indulge yourself with a little real (not fake) half-and-half, or even heavy cream. I usually drink my coffee black with a little stevia, but for a rare desert cup, real sugar and real cream are essential.

GENERAL SHOPPING RECOMMENDATION

After major grocery shopping expeditions, sit down at your computer with your reciept, and check if you can buy any of the non-perishables through Amazon. When you find items (even if more expensive than you just paid), put the item on your Amazon wish list, and add a note to the wish list of the price you just paid. Check your wish list frequently, and when you see an item you need at a bargain price, buy it.

In our day coffee came in a 16 oz can and we drank whatever was cheapest. Now kids know the difference between Robusta and Arabica and go to a local roaster on the day their regional favorite is being roasted. Fancy Auto-Drip machines don''t heat the water hot enough, build up calcium, and don''t immerse all the grind correctly. French pots let silt and bitter elements of the coffee through. This is by far the best humidifier I''ve ever had. Living in a cold weather climate (MA), I need the humidity to counteract the effects of dry air. Otherwise, I get nose bleeds all the time. I took a chance when buying it as there were no reviews for me to read. It is pretty much as advertised. The 1.6 gallon reservoir has an easy-to-pick-up handle for refilling. The cap is a bit difficult to unscrew, so I put a lubricant on the threads to grease it up which helps. It does shut off automatically when dry/empty. It''s very quiet and does not leak. I put it next to my bed and it doesn''t disturb my sleep at all. It''s very easy to clean. Use a little white vinegar once a week. Just put the ceramic nano-silver filter in cup of white vinegar for ten minutes and use a few drops of vinegar to clean the sensor. No need to buy new filters, cartridges, or mineralization pads. I have noticed a little white dust in the room, but far less than the Bionaire ultrasonic humidifier I used to have. The Hygrostat sensor indicates the humidity level. Not sure how accurate it is though. Mist output can be regulated: low, medium, and high. There is a button to produce negative ions. I use it, but don''t really know if it makes any difference in the quality of the air. I have yet to try the warm air mist, so I can''t comment on that. And lastly, there''s no way I can get 60 hours of continuous use without refilling, not unless I want my room to stay dry which defeats the point of having a humidifier. Two nights is more like it. You might get 60 hours if you put the humidity level at low or at a desired level of 45%. I can''t comment on how much electricity it uses and I don''t know how long it will last. I''ve had it for one week and so far and I love it. I highly recommend it.

I tried this unit and filed for a return after one week. I bought the unit despite it having only three reviews. Now I question these reviews because they all gave five stars and I completely hate this product.

CONS:

1) The manufacturer claims "High moisture output can quickly humidify a room up to 40 m² (430 ft²)." No way. I have a 10'' x 16'' bedroom and I am waking up with dry eyes and mouth even though our outdoor temperature lows have only been between 33 and 57 degrees Fahrenheit this week. I had the unit on maximum ouput the last night of my trial. It would only be worse when our heat is running more frequently during the night.

2) If you are light sensitive when you go to bed and you intend to put this in your bedroom then this unit is not for you. It radiates blue light in every direction. There is a bright blue light bulb with the only purpose of shining through the water tank. It does not dim and I can''t find a way to turn it off. The manufacturer''s picture of the unit shows a blue glow around it -that''s not for marketing, that''s exactly how it glows. It''s very annoying.

3) There is also a blue LED display that automatically dims a level after a minute or so but not near enough and there is no way to turn it completely off. If you put the unit on automatic to control humidity then the LED situation is worse because the word "setup" flashes FOREVER while in that mode.

4) Despite all of this irritating light there is no light where it might be positive: on the buttons of the unit and its remote control! I tried to crank the unit up to its maximum setting in the dark and even though I could see this bright blue cube of water in the room I could not read the controls. I had to turn on the bedroom overhead light which disturbed my wife.

5) From the same night-time-adjustment incident I discovered another annoying thing: each button press beeps loudly. The next day I could not find a way in the manual or through experimentation to disable the beeping for every button press.

6) There is no way that I can find in the manual to change the temperature gauge to read in Fahrenheit versus Celsius.

7) The company does not honor Amazon''s expedited shipping policy... but they will charge you for it. I ordered this way and they did not ship to me within two days. I had to email them and then a day later I got a shipping notice.

8) This product is far too much more expensive than other ultrasonic humidifiers and for no justifiable reason that I can discern.

PROS

1) The unit operates quietly when compared to an evaporative humidifier. But so did every other ultrasonic that I have ever owned or observed. That''s the pro of going with ultrasonic technology for a humidifier.

2) I like the promise of its "Permanent, easy-to-clean ceramic nano-silver filter for control of white dust, mould and bacteria." I did not see any white dust during my trial week, I can vouch for that. But will the filter last for a long time? I don''t know. My bet is that some plastic part will break from handling the unit and the tank at some point and one would need to buy another humdifier before this particular filter gave out.

For now I am switching back to my evaporative humidifier. It''s loud and it takes filters and additives to keep the water and air clean but it actually gets the job of humidity control done which is job #1.

I like all the useful functionality included in this humidifier. Auto dimming LED, timer, humidity-level control, displays room humidity and temperature (even when powered off, but plugged in, of course :-P), negative ions (though I can''t say I felt it and I don''t know the spec for the -ion output rate), and remote control. I find them all useful. I will probably also use the warm mist function when it gets cold.

Only complaint, when I set humidity to 65%, it can only push room humidity to about 59%. When I set it to 60%, it works up to about 55%. I use it in a small (~160 sqft) bedroom, and I usually leave the door open by an inch, but windows closed. I live in SF bay area, where humidity level is usually around 45%. Because of its laziness, it does do a good job of saving water. With this relatively small tank (easy to handle), it lasts about 7 nights for me, about 70 hours.

I''ve owned a lot of humidifiers over the years. The HF 707 is a minimally satisfactory product for basic humidification. The two units I''ve used have both reliably put out a lot of water into the air, which we need in winter here in New England. We use it in a 12x12 room, and regularly maintain 45-50% relative humidity, as measured by a separate hygrometer across the room (which I recommend you use, as well). The machine''s integral hygrometer gives highly misleading readings and should be cross-checked with another instrument. The machine''s integral thermometer gives fairly accurate readings. Both readings are thrown way off when you use the heating option. Like most ultrasonic humidifiers, it leaves a deposit of white dust on nearby surfaces, but somewhat less so than our previous Air-O-Swiss.

Order fulfillment is direct from Heaven Fresh, so I ordered direct from them as well. I ordered a black machine, and they sent silver; when I called to get the situation corrected, they explained that they had no black units and that''s why they shipped the silver. (What happened to back-order? They seem genuinely puzzled that I would complain.) They promised me the black units had just come in and they''d ship me one right away. Three calls later, three similar promises, finally insisted on talking to a supervisor. He promised it would ship in three days, and it did -and it is black, but from a batch they received from their Canadian branch, so the temperature is displayed in Celsius, not Fahrenheit. When I called them, they said they were out of US models so they shipped me the Canadian. Again, genuinely puzzled that that wasn''t okay with me. They offered (again!) to ship me a replacement -but this has turned into a too-long farce already, and I declined.

If you decide to purchase anyway, good luck. I''ll be looking elsewhere for the living room unit.

These filters did not work well for me at all. I have used many different brands of filters, some that work well for only a few days, and some that actually make water taste worse. These guys just literally did nothing to my tap water. It tasted no different at all after being filtered. Now, the Watts pitcher that these things fit into is actually pretty nice, so if you happen to have bought the pitcher along with these filters, here''s a tip: if you remove the black rubber gasket from these filters, and wrap them around a standard Brita filter (which are way better than these things), they will fit inside the Watts pitcher. This is what I''ve been doing, and it works just fine.

~Apparently this item is powered by water pressure. I have a well and we don''t have a lot of pressure, so it barely lights up.

~It is supposed to be temperature-sensitive as follows: Blue=Cold, Green=Warm, Red=Hot, Flashing Red=Steaming Hot. In actuality, green=cold & blue=warm and the red is sporadic.

Fun novelty item, but not especially useful for us to keep our 3-year-old from being scalded when washing her hands.

Also, within a couple weeks the plastic threads were stripped and the faucet sprayed water all over my wall.

I would recommend this item as it is inexpensive and fun, but again, not very useful.

Summary: This is arguably one of the best "bagless" household vacuum cleaners money can buy. Dyson''s root cyclone technology really does perform. And this latest Level 3 Root Cyclone trumps even its other models.

If you''re serious about having a real clean environment, this is THE product to buy. I just moved into an apartment a month ago and they replaced the carpets in most of the area and steam cleaned the others that they deemed need not be replaced. I used the vacuum in both and I can tell you that steam cleaning old carpets may get rid of surface dirt and stains, but Dyson is your friend if you want to suck out most (if not all) the dirt hidden below the surface. I could not believe how much dust it was picking up in such a small area. The bin filled up pretty fast so I was on to round 2 in the same patch of rug. This time it was picking up very find dust. Dust that may have been stuck for years and was never sucked out from other vacuum systems. Round 3 time and you will smile when you realize there is nothing else that''s being collected in the bin. As for the newly installed carpets, I could only collect find dust until no more could be collected.

Unlike other vacuums in the market, this is one heck of a quiet vacuum in a relative way. Of course it''s still noisy, but as with other brands this won''t hurt your noise environment. In fact I am able to vacuum even at night with no fear that my neighbors beside and above my unit will hear me.

You''re not only paying for the suction technology, you''re also paying for the build quality. Each part has quality reflected on it. While the design is modern.

Of course nothing is perfect. This thing is heavy. DO NOT vacuum the stairs while the machine is on the top stair because if this thing falls on you, there will be serious injury and damage.

The quick-draw expandable hose is a good idea. But it''s also not as flexible as I would have imagined it to be. It''s easy to expand and retract, but the long handle commands that the vacuum is at a distance from where you want to use the telescope handle if you want to operate it comfortably.

Among other bagless vacuums, this is the easiest to dump the contents. But just like all other bagless vacuums, dust will certainly be flying away from the trash unless you have a very deep trash can. Plus the fine holes around the cyclone technology gets clogged from fine dust in time so you will need to clean those tiny holes from time to time if you want the Dyson to perform it''s best everytime.

The lifetime Hepa filter is a great addition below. They recommend only washing with water and drying at least 24 hours near a heater/radiator and they really do mean 24 hours. It''s big and thick so it won''t dry out quickly. So if you find the need to frequently vacuum the next day, I recommend getting an extra Hepa filter to use.

The motorized brush bar helps pick up stuff from the carpet. This can be turned off for delicate rugs and floors. Just like other vacuums, hair and other long items can be trapped around the brush bar and need to be removed from time to time. It is also belt-driven so this can snap and break especially if inadvertently caught on a loose item. So be careful of this.

Overall, Dyson is a wonderful machine to have and will surely last longer if properly taken care of.

If you are extremely allergic to dust, I believe a better alternative is to go with Oreck XL as it ensures you will not be in contact with the dust particles due to it''s ingenious bag design that closes shut when removed.

Bought a refurb model here on Amazon after hearing so many good things about Dyson. We have 2 dogs, German Shepherd & a Chow. Needless to say, they leave a lot of hair all over the place.

We had 2 different vacuums when we bought the Dyson and neither came close to doing what the Dyson can do.

The first day we tried it out on an area rug it literally picked up a canister FULL of hair that our other vacs missed earlier that day!

Pros: Quieter than most other vacs, accessories snap in tight, amazing suction power, long power cord.

Cons: hose wand can be unwieldy.

Would love to see an automatic retractable cord.

Overall, my wife and I are extremely happy with this purchase.

Until yesterday, I figured all vacuums were more-or-less an equal pain. After all, the Bissell (junk) we bought had the same 12 amp, bagless design as the Dyson. I figured "How different could they be?" ( Answer -LOTS!)

I bought the DC 14 "Animal" yesterday, not realizing there were _2_ Dyson "Animals". (I should have paid closer attention and also realized Bed/Bath/Beyond and Linens-n-Things carried out-of-date merchandise.

They neither one can even get the DC17. )

The DC14 was a good machine. The finest vacuum I had ever used.

As I was about to write my Amazon view (which I should do more often thanks to all you who take your time to do), when I discovered there was a newer, better, machine -this one, the DC17. I figured "what the heck." After going over living room 3 times with the Bissell then going over it with the DC14 and being amazed at what it picked up, I thought I had thoroughly cleaned the house with the DC14. After my discovery and subsequent return of DC14 and pick up of DC17 I re-cleaned the (I thought) clean house and was amazed as the dirt the DC17 picked up that the DC14 left behind. Multiple compartments worth!

The DC17 has significantly better suction than the 14, has a more powerful (wider?) head, puts out cleaner air, ...

This is compared to the DC14 that I purchased on the 3rd of Oct 2006. Now I realize there are many Dyson haters, Hoover haters, Electrolux haters ect. I have NOTHING to gain by sharing my results. I am a Midwest housewife that likes a clean house and this includes clean carpets. Our carpets are professionally steam cleaned every 4 monthsget a great deal because we own rentals and use this service alot. Additionally, the steam kills any dust mites in the rug. For the last 4 years I have had a Hoover windtunnel that didn''t seem to be picking up after the two Chihuahuas Long and Short hair, (NOW I know it sucked) and was THRILLED to get the DC14 a Linen''s and Things for about $ including tax. I used the DC14 EVERYDAY since my purchase and was pleasantly surprised and disgusted at the stuff that ended up in the bin. Husband and sons just shook their collective heads at my delight and constant running of the Dyson. But eventually there was no more dirt to be had from my carpets. Just alittle fine powderI smiled smugly! LOL! The ranch house we were about to move from will be clean for our tenantsso I thought!

Anyhow, since the DC17 was available I wanted one for the upstairs of the new house (which is in the process of being built). Why two you ask? The house is 5,500 square feet so I didn''t want to lug one up and down the stairs. So yesterday I did some googling for Best Buy coupons (since that is the only place I have seen them) and found that I could get the DC17 for $ online and schedule an in store pickup. The store price was $ so I saved about 5%-not much but it helped. Within 90 minutes of ordering it I was home vacuuming.

I was truely speechless at what the DC17 pulled out of the carpets with ONLY 12 minutes of vacuuming. (The Steelers were about to play and I didn''t want to miss any of the game.) It was soon obvious the DC14''s brush was not up to snuff because of the dog hair that was pullled from the berber weave by the DC17. Add to that the grit and fine, fine powder in the bin. The DC14 is a bit difficult to push on my bedroom carpet but the DC17 feels more self propelled than my Hoover. It really moves itself!

Another great feature is the bare floor/carpet buttonit is now located by the on/off switch. Additonally the wand set up is GREAT and easy to use. The noise of the DC17 is clearly quieter than my DC14not so shrill.

All in allI would trade my DC14 for another DC17 anyday.

BTWThe really long red hair in the bin is mine (the short red/buff hair is my LH chi''s)NONE got caught in the rollermuch to my amazement!

After my 6 year old Sharp died I began a search that took much longer than I expected. I read Consumer Reports, went to 2 vaccum cleaner shops, cleaned the floor at Sears with everyone of their floor modles and even sat through a Rainbow demonstration. Who knew finding a vaccum cleaner would be so time consuming and quite frankly expensive????

I tried a Riccar upright....sale price $399 and took it back the same day. After the home demo of the Rainbow, and not wanting to spend $1895 for something I might not like, I borrowed a friends (she is s really good friend to lend me her relatively new Rainbow) and tried it for a weekend. I found it to be combersome and after it was all said and done I had strined a muscle in my neck with all the cleaning I did and had to see a chiropracter. The Rainbow did not cause all my muscle problems as I have been treated by a chiropracter for a little over a year, but I can certianly say it didn''t help it either.

I have a 2000 sq ft home with hardwood floors throught and several antique rugs...all with fringe (this vaccum will automatically shut off the beater bar if I accidently suck up the fringe....that was worth $500 to me). My husband is an oriental rug dealer and these rugs are very old and have lots of deep down dust in them I''m sure. So I wanted something that would clean the wood floors and rugs with as much ease as possible.

January 17th was my birthday. I met my mom for lunch but before we ate we went to the mall. I was making one last ditch effort to find the "perfect" vaccum cleaner. And there it was.......the Dyson 17. I had looked at it once before but for $500+ was it really worth it? The salesman was quite patient as I asked quesiton after question as I vaccumed most of the appliance department. Still a bit uneasy I sucked it up and made it purchase.

When I got back home I put it all together (not hard at all) and began to vaccum.........WOW!!! I could not believe what I was seeing? The Rainbow was just used on that some rug and the Dyson still picked up more dust and dirt. Then came time to empty the canister. I expected this to be the point at which I would pack it up again to take it back, but no, it was so easy and the dust didn''t fly everywhere. Yeah a little flew back into the air so now I have started using a plastic shopping bag and I just empty it and tie it up and throw it away. Very little , if any, mess is made now.

The attachments are terrific. I love the low floor tool for getting my bathroom floors and it even fits behind the toilet. The dusting brush is great for my plantation blinds and even ceiling fans. The upholstry tool is great for throw pillows. I have leather furniture and that is all I have used it on so far.

I know this is a bit lengthy but if someone else is out there reading reviews like I did I wanted as much information as anyone was willing to give, especially when you are considering spending $500+ for a vaccum cleaner.

One of the most important things to me was getting one that would suck up pet hair. We have a 1 yr old black lab and he sheds, not too bad but enough that my husband thinks our house is never clean. The greatest thing is that after using the Dyson 17 he said everything looked cleaner to him. WOW! He is a wonderful man and tries to be supporative but spending $500+ on a vaccum cleaner was not top on his list of things to do but he is glad I did it now. I have yet to try the mini turbine tool but I think it will be great for vaccuming out the car.

I would strongly recommend this vaccum to anyone who wants to make cleaning a little easier. I have not had a problem with the hose as some people have stated. It is easy to pull out and has a very long reach. The cord is longer than most I have tried. Auto shut off of the brush beater bar is a huge plus for me as is the bagless feature. I just cannot say enough good things about it. Go ahead.....spend the money and enjoy cleaning for a change.

No announcement about this by the company that I''ve seen. The thick green stuff that has been sold over the decades (and for which I give five stars) is now joined by the clear watery liquid that someone else has commented on, and if you''re expecting to pour the thick green stuff on something you might see an unexpected squirt of clear formula product that can splash and get into places you hadn''t planned on. I have a bottle of each, and I will describe the subtle differences in the packaging. At the top of the label on each is a gold check mark and the word, "Expert", and below that is "Rust Stain Remover" on the green gel product. Below "Expert" on the thin clear liquid product are the words "Hard Water Stain Remover". In addition the green gel product has a picture of thick green gel in the center of the label, along with the words "THICK GEL Formula". The contents of the thick green gel are stated as, "sulfamic acid and ethoxylated tallow amine", while the label on the bottle containing the thin clear liquid states "Contains sulfamic acid". As another reviewer said, Amazon''s photo of the product shows the green gel bottle with the clear, thin liquid "Hard Water Stain Remover" written description.

I was very disappointed with this product, the front of the package on the internet said it was a thick gel, it was more like water, it definitely is not like it used to be, the thick gel needs to come off what is displayed on the internet.

I use this on our therapy pool because the water here in Maryland is pretty rough on the fiberglass. It doesn''t take all of the scale off but makes a considerable difference. Also, this works better than the spray if you just squirt it on the surface and let it sit for awhile before rinsing.

I was looking for a 4 cup coffee maker, with a cone filter, with a glass carafe, and if it was in red it would match the other red items in my kitchen. So I ordered this coffee maker. I grew up in the country and really hate the taste of chlorine-ish city water. For years I have always installed a filter of some kind on the cold feed line in my kitchen sink so I have good-tasting drinking water. I bought this cooler for my son who has no AC in his mobile home living in the hot Texas sun and it works very well for him in his bedroom to keep him cool at night. It is not designed to cool down an entire house for you, but it works very well to keep an average size bedroom comfortably cool at night. He keeps his around 65 F to sleep. It gets to hot during the day in the mobile home, so he only runs it at night when he gets home. It is not as noisy as his fans were which is a big plus. The unit is a big awkward to move on carpet when you fill it with water, but that can be remedied by bringing the water to it instead and filling it that way. For the money I paid I believe it was a good buy since I had a different unit several years ago which cost me twice as much and didn''t work near as well. It was very easy to place the order online and without paying for expedited shipping, I received my order within 4 days in perfect condition. I saw another review someone else left about this unit that was pretty bad and I would recommend to this individual that he/she contact the company and maybe talk to them and see if they can work something out about getting it replaced instead; maybe there is something wrong with their unit. Like I said before, the unit we received, works very well.

As I live in the attic of an old house, when it''s 95 or 100 degrees outside, it''s not much cooler inside. This unit, a step-up from the New Air 330 I moved into the bedroom, makes a difference in whether I can stay home or have to retreat to a movie theatre during the hottest hours of the day. Hi DO NOT believe that fake review. THis thing is horrible. First of all it is very cheaply made plastic and smells terrible. It is very hard to move it takes Forever to fill the tank in the tinly slot on the side. Yes it has wheels but if you tilt it to move while full it spills water everywhere. If you try to push it from the water source to the room it tips over and killed my back trying to roll it. I was willing to put up with that if it did what it said. We put it in our small bedroom that is our office. shut the door and turned it on cooling on high. SHut the door and the air in the house was on 78. That room gets hot due to the computers. The thermostat on the cooler said 84 two hours later it said 82. NOT WORTH THE MONEY. Now I see that I have to pay the return shipping and a 15% restocking fee. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY. THEY ARE CHEAP RIP OFFS WITH FALSE ADVERTISING. I guarantee you the reviews are fake. I am reporting them to the better business bureau. Buyer beware. This is not a reputable company to business with.

Also do not do business with Air & Water Inc they are rip offs and charge you return shipping and a 15% restock fee and they would not post my review which is the same above.

Okay, now for the part you''ve been waiting for, the review:

I''ll make this really simple: throw away all your other coffee makers and use the Aeropress. Well, you can keep your $350 espresso maker and your electric drip coffee maker, your French press, and your ibrik. You won''t USE them anymore, but you can sure keep ''em if you want to.

How serious am I about a good cup of coffee? I roast my own beans. In 1968 when America was brewing coffee in percolators, I saw Michael Caine grind coffee beans in the opening scene of "The Ipcress File" and went right out and searched for coffee beans and a grinder. People thought I was very strange because, after all, "I don''t see the difference between vacuum packed and coffee beans." But I could tell the difference. I used a plastic cone and paper filters back then, a system which has basic flaws overcome by the Aeropress. Whatever kind of coffee you''ve been drinking, it''ll be better if you make it with the Aeropress.

A word about the filters. I can taste the paper in coffee made in those drip makers of various kinds. I cannot taste the paper in coffee made in the Aeropress.

If you grind your own coffee, you don''t have to get an expensive grinder because the Aeropress is not very particular about the fineness or coarseness of the grind. Fine is better. Coarse will work. You could probably pound the beans with a meat tenderizer and come up with a grind that would work okay in the Aeropress. Whatever grind you use, none of the grit will wind up on your teeth because the economical paper filters keep them out of your cup. There are people who do like the tactile sensation of coffee grounds on their teeth such as coffee brewed in a French press or made in an ibrik. I''m not all that fond of it myself.

The coffee that comes out of the south end of the Aeropress is, certainly from a tactile and visual point of view, free from grounds. So? Well, for one thing, there are no grounds still brewing in the coffee you''ve got waiting for you in your stylish thermal carafe or in the cup you''re savoring right at the moment, and that means that the coffee doesn''t get bitter. Think about that for a moment. You get distracted, the coffee in your cup cools off. You nuke it for a few seconds. It''s now hot enough to drink, but it just doesn''t taste right. Or after a few hours in the carafe, the coffee, while it may still be hot enough, has become bitter. This just does not happen with coffee brewed in an Aeropress. Nuke that neglected cold cup of coffee sitting in front of you, and it''s all but indistinguishable from a freshly brewed cup. Pour a hot cup from the carafe a couple of hours after you brewed it, and it''s just like a freshly brewed cup. And when you drain the last drop of coffee from your cup, there are no grounds forming a reverse alluvial fan left behind. This can be a disadvantage to people who tell fortunes by reading coffee grounds. Anybody do that? Even more remarkable is that coffee stored for a day or more in the refrigerator can be reheated without an objectionable loss in quality. It''s perhaps enough to notice, but if that coffee was made in an Aeropress, don''t bet a large amount of money on a taste test, unless you''re a professional taster, that you could tell reheated refrigerated coffee a few days old from a brand-new cup.

The measure that comes with the Aeropress holds three tablespoons which the Aeropress website recommends for a five-ounce cup of coffee. Say what?! Okay, the coffee does not, as in a French press, brew for four minutes; it brews for less than a minute, counting stirring and plunging time. That short time makes for a cup of coffee that''s low in caffeine but with a robust coffee flavor. You can even make coffee with half the amount of water into an espresso cup, and, trust me on this, it is delicious. All the intensity of espresso''s fullness of flavor, but without the bitterness. Now, I have a very good espresso machine, and one day, after having used the Aeropress for several months, I wanted to experience another cup of espresso.

I''m tempted to heave a huge sigh right along in here. Espresso is finicky. My machine (did I mention it''s a good one?) is a semiautomatic. That means that it makes coffee with the same amount of pressure and at the correct temperature every time, but I have to put in the right amount of grounds and those grounds better be ground exactly right. Too fine, and the pump can''t force the water through in 23 seconds, and the coffee will be extremely strong and without crema, that thick foam that''s the hallmark of a correctly brewed espresso. Too coarse, and the pump forces the water through too fast, and you get a weak cup of coffee. And you don''t get crema that time either. So I had to experiment with the grind and the amount to the tune of three tossed shots of espresso before I got one right. Did I mention espresso is finicky? It was quite good, but I discovered that not only is espresso finicky, so am I. I had grown to prefer the simplicity of the forgiving Aeropress. Once you get past getting water to the right temperature, I can''t think of a way you can make a bad cup of coffee with the Aeropress.

And, by the way, I discovered that the correct amount of coffee grounds to use for a cup of espresso in my machine turned out to be the same as one Aeropress coffee measuring scoop.

Making a pot of coffee? Since brewing coffee in the Aeropress takes less than a minute, once you''ve got your water at the right temperature, you can brew up a whole lot of coffee really fast. A note on making coffee with really fresh coffee grounds such as those from beans you''ve just roasted: It foams up like a freshly poured beer. So you''ll not be able to fill the receptacle up to the "4" mark. The solution? Do I have to think of everything?! Fill it to the "3" mark. Do this twice and you''ve made a quart of coffee in perhaps three minutes.

One really endearing feature of the Aeropress is that it''s a snap to clean. You remove the little black filter basket at the bottom of the press, push the grounds into the kitchen wastebasket, rinse off the rubber plunger (look at the photos to see what I mean by "plunger"), rinse the basket. You''re done. Sometimes I swipe the remaining grounds off the plunger with the stirring paddle before I rinse it. The whole operation takes maybe 15 seconds. I have another Aeropress in my office where I work (as a highly paid professional, of course), and my little windowless cubicle -I mean my spacious corner office with panoramic view has no running water. I found that I''m able to clean it almost as well using a damp paper towel. I save the rinse for later.

Now, the word "plastic" has the connotation of "cheap" or "flimsy" for some people. Bear in mind that telephones and bowling balls are plastic, and nobody thinks of those two items as flimsy. The Aeropress is made of what appears to me to be very high quality plastic. There are no rough edges. It''s thick and strong. And it''s made in the United States, something that''s apparently a value for the company. So for all of you who want to buy American, here''s your chance: invented in America by an American and made in America.

The Aeropress requires that the user have the ability and the patience to bring water to the right temperature, 175 degrees Fahrenheit. If you don''t have a thermometer, you''ll have to buy one. I have the kind you can stick into a slab of meat or dunk into an Aeropress. It works just fine, and it''s not very expensive. Under five dollars as I recall at my local hardware store.

How bothersome is it to bring water to the correct temperature? It''s not. I experimented for a few minutes and discovered that in my microwave, water poured to the "3" level on the plunger thingy was brought to the right temperature in one minute on high. How hard is that? Or if you''re not up to measuring the water, just stick your thermometer into the whistle on your teakettle and soon after you hear the water making that noise like it''s about to boil (somewhere around 165 to 170 degrees Fahrenheit), it''ll be at 180 degrees. I like this temperature because when you pour it into the Aeropress plunger, it cools off to just the right temperature of 175. Your mileage may vary.

There might be easier ways to make coffee, but I know of none better.

This makes a great cup of coffee. One of my favorite discoveries was when I read the instructions and they mentioned rinsing off these filters and reusing them. I had never thought of that, but considering how coffee filters DON''T decompose well in the compost, I love this idea and the amount that comes with the Aeropress will last a long time this way without ordering the extra pack. Just rinse and re-use.

Mavea 1001496 Universal Filter for Water Filtration Pitchers

I use Brita water filters so my comparisons will be to that product. There are two things I dislike about Brita filtersone, you must presoak them and two, carbon from the filter seeps out into the filtered water. It is very upsetting to see. When I first read about the Mavea Universal Fit filters which require no presoaking and use a micro screen to keep carbon from leaking out of the filter into the filtered water, I was ecstatic. When I read further that they are substantially cheaper than Brita filters I was over the moon.

Now, it''s reality timeputting the Mavea filter through its paces. Not having to presoak was wonderful and I did not see any carbon in the filtered water. So far so good. However, it is recommended that the Mavea filters be prewashed with two pitchers of water which is a bit of a nuisance. You have to get into Mavea''s fine print to find out about this. The same thing must be done with Brita filters. Next up is Mavea''s claim that their filters are dramatically cheaper than Britar''s. Well.......yes and no. If you''re buying a small number of Brita filters (one or two), there is quite a price difference. However, Brita sells their filters in small and large packages. If you compare the price of a Mavea filter to the cost of one or two Brita filters, you''re going to have some pretty dramatic savings from buying the two pack Mavea. However, if you buy Brita in three-packs or greater, the price difference between Brita and Mavea disappears.

With the price difference really nil,, I would buy the Mavea filters because they don''t have to be presoaked and because I didn''t get the ugly black carbon residue in my filtered water. They seem to perform just as well as the Britas in all other respects.

Also to Mavea''s credit (was probably government mandated as these filters come from Europe) is their total recycle program. So nothing goes into a landfill. If you''d like to show a bit of your green side, Mavea would be the way to go.

We''ve been using the Brita filters for years; I didn''t know there were alternative filters.

Though you don''t have to soak these filters for an extended time period, you do have to dunk them first before putting in the pitcher.

These Mavea filters are shorter than the Brita filters and they sit up higher in the upper chamber. What I like most is the complete absence of those black specks that sometimes find their way into the lower section of the pitcher. With the Brita filters those black specks are omnipresent no matter what you do.

The only negative I see with the Mavea filters is that they seem slower to filter the water than the Brita filters.

I guess that doesn''t matter unless you are in a hurry for some filtered water.

So now Brita pitcher users have a choice charcoal specks in the pitcher or the painfully slow filtering of the Mavea.

We use our Brita all the time & the filters aren''t cheap. These clock in at about half the price which is good...but there are a couple drawbacks:

The filter sits high in the slot so to cover it with water you almost have to put in so much that it easily spills over the top when you try to get the lid back on and the "micro screen" makes for some slow pour-through. And the most annoying thing is that it says "No pre-soak required" but the instructions tell you to discard the first two pitchers full of water...um, Guys, THAT''S a pre-soak.

I do like the idea of a recycle program for old filters but you have to save 6 filters up to do it. The water does taste about the same as the Brita filters we usually use (gets rid of the earwaxy taste of our local water).

So, good but not great. I might buy them if they appear in the local grocery store, but I won''t go out of my way to.

I''ve been using this Mavea filter for over 2 months, I have the original model of the PUR pitcher and it fits just as good as the OEM PUR filters do.

The Mavea seems to filter the water better than the PUR, especially when it''s just about time to change out to a new one.

I also like the fact I don''t have to take time to soak a new filter, but it is recommended to run through 2 pitchers of water through before drinking one.
