Christchurch was recently rocked by a series of two major unrelated quakes. The Sep 4, 2010 7.1 quake did a lot of damage but the 6.3 of Feb 22, 2011 was much closer and shallower and destroyed most of the business district. My home was in the hardest hit Eastern suburbs along the Avon River. Since these quakes began we had almost 1700 aftershocks. My house is still standing although most of my neighbors are not. I had the foresight to buy a Berkey 8 months before the quakes began. My initial thought was that I did not need to store any water as I could take it from the river across the street to purify. But the day of the first quake all the water in the river disappeared and came up a liquefaction in the road and property. The only water left in the river was a white sludge which would have clogged any purifier. I was able to get some municipal water and use the Berkey to purify that. It has been in constant use since the quakes began. Although the city says the water is safe, several friends have reported strange infections they attribute to the water. So, I will continue to purify the water and have not had any of these problems. The water tastes wonderful and makes a drop at a time but fairly quickly. My only complaints are that the instructions were not clear how the washers on the tap go on (they are not symmetrical) so I had a few leaks the first time I used it. Also, the device is called "Berkey Light" so I assumed it was the model that has the LEDs built in to illuminate it at night; it does not. That model is called the Berkey Light LED. The use of the word Light is misleading. Now I wish I could have had the model with the LEDs as power was off for a considerable time. The device looks a bit top heavy and looks unstable but so far it has not fallen over in some large aftershocks. Maybe the company can invent a device to secure it. During the latest quake I didn''t have water for over one month. This device is a lifesaver and I am purchasing extra filters for it just in case Planet X shows up one day in the future...

February 2009: Works great and so much easier than bringing bottled water from the grocery. No need to stock up during hurricane season and no plastic bottles going into the recycling. Makes tea and coffee taste better. Got one for several family members and it takes away the off taste from water out in the country.

Update April 2011: The Berkey Light continues to serve me very well. There was a slight glitch a couple of years ago when the upper container developed a crack in the bottom, parallel to the seam. The company replaced it quickly and without question. I only started using the 2nd filter a couple of months ago. So filtering approximately 10 gallons per week the original filter lasted 4+ years. One family member is still using the Berkey Light mainly to make better tasting tea. The other family member who received one as a gift no longer uses it, probably because of lack of space and the inconvenience.

I will be the first to admit that the price is a bit steep for a couple $10 plastic jugs and a $5 plastic spigot. I admit the filters are worth it though. They seem to do the job quite nicely.

We have very distasteful tap water where we live. Unfortunately, even these filters are not enough to make the water taste palatable. However, I certainly feel better having this water filter system in case of an emergency.

This is a nice filter. I did about 6 batches of water and the filter element came unglued. I called Berkey and they sent new filters out and I returned the old broke ones. My well is hard water with iron and after running it through the filter it is great tasting and really clear. I haven''t tried this on rain water but it should work. Glad I bought it just hope it lasts.

Essick Air 4D7 300 Whole-House Console-Style Evaporative Humidifier Save 5% Off

Essick Air 4D7 300 Whole-House Console-Style Evaporative Humidifier, Lith OakIt appears that the first guy to review this humidifier didn''t bother to read the directions. He said there is no way to tell if the unit needs to be refilled. That is completely incorrect. The digital readout will indicate the level of humidity in the air but if one of the bottles is empty an "F" displays on the left or right to tell you that the bottle on that side needs to be filled. This unit definitely does the job but it is quite flimsy and it is very noisy. I find it hard to justify the $180 price based on build quality but it does do the job.

This humidifier does an amazing job. It raises the humidity in our entire home(split level)to a comfortable level where the winter skin-crawling sensation stops and the static-electricity in our hair and clothes goes away. Bemis/Essick stands behind their product better than any company I''ve encountered. Our motor froze-up and they replaced it at no charge even though it was out of warranty. They had no legal obligation to do so, but did it anyway because they had received a bad bunch of motors. They apparently value their customers and reputation.

Buy Essick Air 4D7 300 Whole-House Console-Style Evaporative Humidifier Now

We didn''t buy this through Amazon, but I need to review it where I can. We have had to replace the power head three times dut to malfunctions, and the third time took about four months and only did we get it after complaining to the BBB!

Overall the unit does provide humidity and it is noisy on the high fan settings, but for this level of humididty to cover this volume what would you expect.

Problems with the third head now are that it doesn''t notify when the tanks are out, so we have to just check it daily, but I''m not going to go through the H*** I just went through to get a new head.

The intake filters are a joke as they restrict the air flow so much, a lot goes around the filter as it has no positive seal to the unit (really, it just sits on the side).

Now, the stoppers on the tanks wont seal properly so unless I carry the tanks upright I''ll dribble water all over the place (deal with Essick NO!). I''ll just have to make sure that if we turn off the unit to pull the tanks.

I seriously wish there was a unit that oculd put out this much humidity and not have the issues...

I agree with another review that said it is not worth the $180 price tag! This unit is very flimsy. And noisy? Gadz, if it''s in the same room with you, and set on the lowest fan speed, the noise from it will drive you up the wall! On the higher speeds...I think standing next to a moving freight train would not be so loud. The old "water wheel" humidifiers were much quiter, and did a much better job of getting humidity into the air. The "clean air" filter on the back of the unit is USELESS! There is a large gap between the filter and the back of the unit.

Just like water, and electricity, moving air will also take THE PATH OF LEAST RESISTANCE. In this case air is sucked more easily through the GAP than through the filter, rendering the filter useless! GREAT ENGINEERING...what were they thinking! I put the filter in the unit, traced it with a Sharpie marker, removed it and added foam weather stripping to the back of the unit to close off that gap.

UPDATE 1/21/2012. I found that the micro switch for the left tank was sticking so when the left bottle was empty the indictor to fill the bottle would not come on. This switch also has to work so that if both tanks go empty the unit will not run.

I called customer servise at Essick-Air, told the woman who answered what the problem was, and asked if they could just send me the switch and I would fix it myself. The way she talked to me was VERY RUDE! She told me I would have to return the entire unit to Amazon, and have them order me a replacement. I guess it is much better to inconvenience the buyer than it would be just to send out a 50 cent switch! Essick-Air is one company that I will never purchase from again, and I would not recomend their products to anyone!!

UPDATE 1/29/2012 Overall this humidifier does NOT do the job! It is used in an area of about 900 sq.ft. and it will NOT bring the humidity up to a comfortable level. It runs constantly. This unit has been in the same spot since I received it, and today I found my carpeting soaking wet!! It emptied the water all over the floor. This thing is a total piece of JUNK! Essick Air is poor engineering, poor quality, poor customer service, and way overpriced for the junk that it is.

Want Essick Air 4D7 300 Whole-House Console-Style Evaporative Humidifier Discount?

bought this item because of las vegas nv dry weather. the unit is supposed to humidify the whole home. with the blower on full speed to do that you would have to hide the unit in the garage and duct the air in because it is so loud. even at speed 1 (it has 9 speeds)it is louder than the floor stand fan i use to help it circulate the humidity. on occasion one refill bottle will empty and it doen''t switch over to the other bottle and completely dries out the wick and the humidity drops dramatically. the caps that release the water from the bottles to the wick have a tendency to leak when you refill them so you have to be quick when putting them back into the unit or you will get water dripping on anything in their path which includes the control panel. when working properly it does a good job, but boy the manufacture does need better quality control.

GE SmartWater Replacement Water Filter Set (FXSVC-3pack)

GE SmartWater Replacement Water Filter SetWe installed this filter five years ago and have enjoyed the convenience greatly. We use two sets of filters a year and this set of three is a huge savings over store bought prices.

I spoke with a G.E. smart water representative and(#1) I learned that the sediment I was experiencing was due to the fact that the grey filter must be placed on the incoming water side or you will encounter charcoal filtrate.(#2) I would also recommend that you acquire a adjustable rubber strap wrench to loosen the filter housing. The filter is quite effecient in toxic material removal and is surprisingly heavy upon removal on replacement.

Melitta Cone Filter Manual Coffeemaker 6 Cup

Melitta Cone Filter Manual Coffeemaker 6 Cup, 1-CountBeing a lifelong coffee fiend, I''ve tried literally EVERY type and brand of coffee-making device known to mankind over the last 30 years: standard electric drip coffee makers, percolators (not recommended to anyone with an appreciation for coffee and functioning tastes buds), French presses, vacuum pump units, microwave gizmos for which one needs an engineering degree to figure out, etc., but I keep coming back to this one.

It''s definitely low tech, but it does what it''s designed to do, e.g. make a terrific pot of coffee with minimal hassle. Other reviews have described the process of using this as being additionally cumbersome (given the need to boil water separately beforehand} but I don''t personally find that to be the case. I keep a teakettle of filtered water on my stovetop, and when I''m ready to make coffee, I turn the burner on, and while the water is heating, I measure the coffee out, and then once the water is near boiling, simply pour over the grounds. The entire process takes about five to seven minutes, start to finish, about the same time as an electric drip unit would take.

The unit -which essentially works similarly to more stylish (but also considerably more expensive) Chemex coffemaker -has several advantages over other coffee making methods: because the water is manually boiled, one can control the temperature; because the unit is so low tech and has no buttons, switches, bells, whistles or moving parts, it can last for decades (unless one breaks the glass carafe which, being on the clumsy side, I''d done more than once -but then they''re so inexpensive to replace that it''s really not that big a deal; also, the carafes of electric drip units are equally fragile); if one has a gas stove, as I do, coffee can be made, even during a power failure.

Cleanup is simple: toss the filter full of used grounds in the trash, and after the coffee is consumed, rinse out the filter cone and the carafe. There''s no reservoir to collect nasty sediments like an electric drip unit, no grungy screen and plunger to disassemble and scrub like a French press.

If a new coffee making technology is introduced, I will surely try it, but doubt I will find something else that is as inexpensive or reliable as the Melitta Manual coffee maker.

EASY OF USE

I''ve used the Mellita Coffee System for about 40 years. I find the system more convenient than coffee machines.

> If the power goes off, you can still make coffee if you have a gas stove or a camp stove.

> It is easy to brew exactly the amount of coffee you want, and exactly the strength that you want---including adjusting to new roast and grinds. You can even mix caffeinated and decaffeinated coffees if you wish.

> In a way, the Mellita system is more "sanitary". It is easy to forget a used filter in a coffee maker, maybe for weeks if you go on a vacation, and find a fungus garden in there. You can''t ignore a used Melitta filter, because it is out in the open. If you forget a used Melitta filter, it and the coffee grinds just dry out. It is also much easier to wash the Melitta components---just a quick rinse under the tap is usually good enough. Caveat--some types of coffee are oiler than others---you may need to actually wash your cone and carafe if a quick rinse is not sufficient.

SIZE OPTIONS

The carafes for which the "6 cup" and "10 cup" systems can nominally hold 6 or 10 cups off coffee (filled to the brim), but that is really irrelevant. A more important consideration is cups vs mugs. How many people still drink "cups" of coffee? So, it is the "mug-capacity" (1 mug = 1 1/2 cups) of the filters and cones which really counts.

#2 filters/cones

Recomemnded: 1 cup

Practical Maximum: 1 mug

Theoretical Maximum: 2 cups

#4 filters/cones ("6 cup system")

Recommended: 1-2 mugs

Practical Maximum: 2 1/2 mugs

Theoretical Maximum: 4 mugs

#6 filters/cones ("10 cup system")

Recommended: 2-3 mugs

Practical Maximum: 4 mugs

Theoretical Maximum: 6 mugs

However, I don''t follow my own recommendation: In the morning, I want coffee "now!" I often run out of patience trying to brew even 1 mug of coffee using #4 filter/cones. On the otherhand, the #6 filter/cones holds a whole mug of hot water in one quick pour, and drains about as fast as you can continue to pour the water in---so I find it very convenient for brewing 1 to 2 mugs of coffee at a time, and on rare occasions to easily brew 4 mugs (6 cups) of coffee. However, in this case, the hot water has little time to extract the flavor from the coffee. To compensate, I grind my coffee very finely. I could simply use more coffee, but that would be wasteful.

The #6 filters/cones ("10-cup system") is faster and more flexible, at a slightly higher cost for the filters. Melitta Cone Filter Coffeemaker 10 Cup, 1-Count If you are patient and your space is very limited, such as in a camper, boat, or in a college dorm, or if you really want only 1 or 2 mugs of coffee at a time, #4 filter/cones (the so-called "6 cup system") is a good choice.

GRINDS OF COFFEE

If you usually brew the "recommended" or fewer number of mugs of coffee, then very-finely ground coffee is recommended. If you usually brew the the "recommended" or more number of mugs at a time, then a medium grind coffee may work best. Most supermarket "fine grind" is actually a medium grind. If you brew more than the "practical maximum" a medium-coarse grind will work better. If you grind your own coffee in an electric grinder, "coarse" is only a second or two, medium-fine is perhaps 10 seconds, and very fine is perhaps 30 seconds, until the pitch of the sound changes, indicating that no more grinding is taking place.

REUSE

If you use very-fine grind, then discard the used filter when finished (because most of the flavor will be extracted, and the filter will be clogged up by the fine grinds). If you use a medium grind, then you can optionally reuse the grinds in the afternoon to make a second batch of coffee (which will be lower in caffiene). Coffee-freaks may object to reusing grinds, but it works just fine.

FORMULA

Regardless of the grind, you have to use the same formula for the TOTAL amount of coffee actually made, i.e., 1 to 2 tablespoons of ground coffee per mug, depending on your taste, brand, etc.

FILTERS

Presumably, brown filters are easier on the environment---and on you, less chemicals having been used to manufacture them. Unfortunately, #6 filters are hard to find in most grocery stores, but easy to purchase via Amazon. Melitta Cone Coffee Filters, Natural Brown, No. 6, 40-Count Filters (Pack of 12) Melitta Cone Coffee Filters, Natural Brown, No. 2, 100-Count Filters (Pack of 6)Melitta Cone Coffee Filters, White, No. 6, 40-Count Filters (Pack of 12) In an emergency, you can use #4 filters in a #6 cone, but you''ll regret it (having been spoiled by the convenience of #6 filters).

RECOMMENDATIONS ON MAKING GOOD COFFEE

>>Use fresh unchlorinated water if possible. Do not use "softened", "sparkling", or "mineral" water. If you let an open pitcher of water sit on a counter for a few hours (or overnight), most of the chlorine will evaporate. The best way to get pure water is a reverse-osmosis system. Bring the water to a quick boil, but don''t leave it boiling too long--that will flush out the dissolved oxygen, leaving the coffee tasting flat.

>>There is a huge difference between brands and roasts. Experiment and enjoy. However, even more important is freshness---which is the greatest challenge. How can you know if the coffee is fresh? The easiest way is to signup with a service such as Gavelia, Boca Java, or Coffee Bean Direct--whose only business is providing you with freshly roasted (and freshly-ground if you wish) coffee.

>>Particularly if you do not use a "coffee service", its best to buy whole beans and grind them just before brewing. A $15 grinder Krups 203-42 Fast Touch Coffee Grinder, Black is as good as a $200 grinder. It takes only a few seconds to grind a batch of coffee while waiting for the water to boil.

>>For newbees, "French" or "dark roast" coffee is rich and bitter, and usually brewed "stong". Light roasts are more complex, but some are acidic, and are usually brewed and drank more like tea. Light roast Indonesian coffee is particularly complex. Caveat, "complex" does not necessarily mean flavorful---some dark roasts are wonderful, but it is probably harder to find a good dark roast. The Coffee Bean Direct Assorted Whole Bean Coffee Sampler, 9-Pound Box available from Amazon is a good way to explore the varieties of coffee.

>>The filter cone and carafe should be rinsed off after every use, otherwise your coffee can be contaminated with stale oils. A weekly wash in the dishwasher won''t hurt.

>>Elsewhere, you''ll read endless nonsense about the exact water temperature, how fast or how slow to pour the water, the value of porcelain vs plastic cones, preheating the cones with hot water, how finely ground the coffee should be, etc. It''s all nonsense (except possibly to engineers who design coffeemakers). 99% of what matters is the quality of the ingredients: water and coffee. You want fresh oxygenated chlorine-free salt-free water, and good quality recently-roasted and recently-ground coffee.

SAFETY

It is easy to forget the glass carafe on a hot stove. I broke at least 6 carafes before I purchased a whistling teakettle. Revere 2-1/3-Quart Whistling Tea Kettle NEVER use the carafe to boil water or reheat coffee. The flood of water might crack a ceramic stovetop, or put out a the flame of a gas stove---both causing catastrophic problems. Use your microwave to reheat (1 mug of coffee = 30-45 seconds); it''s faster and safer.

It is important to take care to pour the boiling water into the filter, not between the filter and the filter cone. It is any easy accident to make. To minimize such accidents, fold over the "joined" edges of the filters so that the filter opens wider. If you are a particular klutz, a quick rinse with a little cold water before you add the ground coffee can "glue" the filter to the cone.

SUGAR IN YOUR COFFEE?

Purist insist that coffee should always be drank black. While I tentatively agree, I can''t. My taste-buds are overly sensitive to bitterness. However, I have found that pure Stevia Pure Stevia Extract Powder by Kal 3.5 oz is a good replacement for sugar for me. Oddly, it isn''t as sweet as sugar, but is just as effective in cutting the bitterness, which is what I really need. Truvia and other brands in packets or described as "spoonable" contain bulking agents which effect the flavor and leave a yucky residue, and are comparatively expensive. KAL Pure Stevia contains no bulking agents and is very economical.

SALT IN YOUR COFFEE?

It''s a naval tradition. I''ve found that a few grains of sea-salt in a cup of light-roast coffee can be pleasant, but not so compelling that I make a habit of it. However, a little salt is more noticeable (in a good way) in ice coffee.

MILK IN YOUR COFFEE?

If the purpose is just to cut the acidity, then you need to try a different coffee or brewing method. If the purpose is to cut the bitterness, you might want to try stevia instead. If you simply like milk in your coffee---I say, indulge yourself with a little real (not fake) half-and-half, or even heavy cream. I usually drink my coffee black with a little stevia, but for a rare desert cup, real sugar and real cream are essential.

GENERAL SHOPPING RECOMMENDATION

After major grocery shopping expeditions, sit down at your computer with your reciept, and check if you can buy any of the non-perishables through Amazon. When you find items (even if more expensive than you just paid), put the item on your Amazon wish list, and add a note to the wish list of the price you just paid. Check your wish list frequently, and when you see an item you need at a bargain price, buy it.

When you have the money and want a fancy manual drip maker, you can look at Chemex or Bodum. But, if you want good coffee at a good price, this is it. In our day coffee came in a 16 oz can and we drank whatever was cheapest. Now kids know the difference between Robusta and Arabica and go to a local roaster on the day their regional favorite is being roasted. Fancy Auto-Drip machines don''t heat the water hot enough, build up calcium, and don''t immerse all the grind correctly. French pots let silt and bitter elements of the coffee through. This method takes some time and effort, but if you like good coffee, its worth it. This coffee maker goes for about the price as a bag of good coffee.

  • Includes four filters
  • The R2c filters are a cost effective method to produce clean and better tasting water
  • ANSI/NSF Certified for the reduction of Chlorine (Class II) taste and odor

Entire system works so much better than the Pur filters, which constantly crack and break before a year is up, and the filtered water tastes chlorine-free.

Better filter design as well just two in/out ports. No water enters the enclosed filter once capped, so there''s no mildew growth under the cap unlike other water filter brands that have this issue.

Clear top, so you can instantly check the filter condition. Easy to write the replacement date on the clear top so you know exactly when to replace it.

Electrolux Jetmaxx Green Canister Vacuum Save 34% Off

Electrolux Jetmaxx Green Canister Vacuum, EL4040AWell I love the suction, and the power upholstery attachment, however there are a number of serious design flaws. The worst flaw is the hose, it is very cheap and stiff, although it can theoretically swivel on both ends, you will have to twist it with your hands for it to do so. The hose comes out of the canister at a nearly vertical angle so there is not enough sideways force to make it swivel even if they did have a half way decent swivel attachment. The result is that the hose is constantly kinking and every time you move a few feet the canister flips upside down. Adding to the flipability of the vacuum are the two large wheels on the sides that prevent the canister from turning easily. Rotating wheels would have been a big help here. I have a 1980''s Hover canister that has never flipped. If I could buy an old Hover I would.

My next disappointment was the swiveling arm, which by the way swivels like a dream, so I know they can make a good swivel (try putting it on the hose). I thought I would like this feature however I have found that it makes turning the power head very difficult. When I push the arm to the side instead of moving the head to the side it just swivels the arm. To actually change the direction of the head I have to pick it up turn it and put it back down again (this can get very tiring). Additionally since the hose is kinked all the time, it puts sideways pressure on the arm as a result I am constantly fighting to keep the arm vertical.

On last flaw regards how attachments attach to the arm. The power attachments have a very loose connection and will come off with just a little pressure. When vacuuming under the couch I have pulled the arm back out and found that the power attachment was left behind.

We ordered this canister vacuum because we wanted a canister type vac for versatility, a bagged as opposed to bagless, and a pet hair attachment. The Jetmaxx seemed to have a lot of good features and the build quality is pretty good, but ultimately it fell too short of expectations to be a keeper.

After taking the Jetmaxx for a test drive against a Panasonic Optiflow, we noted the following positives and negatives:

Pros:

-Jetmaxx has a long 5-year warranty.

-HEPA filtration and included filter is washable.

-21'' retractable cord.

-Full bag indicator.

-Fairly quiet operation, especially with canister running only. Power nozzle definitely ups the decibels, but still not as loud as the Eureka Boss upright we were replacing.

-Good selection of included tools: wide, high quality bare floor brush, crevice tool, upholstery tool, and dusting brush.

-"Crush-proof" 7'' hose.

-Quality filters.

-Convenient dust bag basket.

-Dust bags have a tab you can pull over the hole once the bag is full to seal the dust/dirt from blowing out when it''s time to change to a new bag.

-Slots for accessories, such as the bare floor brush.

-Automatic height adjustment of power nozzle. Not totally sure how well this worked in terms of proper suction, but seemed kinda nice to not have to worry about what height you need to set the power nozzle to.

-Compatible with EL8BS2 Electrolux One Pet Hand Powerbrush Accessory.

Cons:

-Dust bag is tiny @ 1.2 quarts. While the bag technically has a capacity of up to 2 quarts (the same bag is used on other models which have larger compartments), the basket this bag sits in constricts its full capacity to just the 1.2 quarts.

-Dust bag quality is questionable. This vacuum comes with two bags and when we attempted to remove the first one from the basket for initial inspection, the cardboard tab easily separated from the bag.

-While the hose may be crush-proof, it''s also very stiff compared to a more traditional wire-reinforced hose. This means the hose gets in your way more and reduces the overall maneuverability of the vacuum when using the power nozzle.

-Poor handle design/placement. The handle on this vacuum is placed in-line with the hose and wand. We found that vacuums with the handle placed above the hose/wand connections provided more leverage and increased overall maneuverability of the vacuum, and ultimately a more pleasant vacuuming experience. Each time my wife and I tested this vacuum, we noticed the Jetmaxx was more grueling to "drive" and couldn''t imagine wanting to put up with it for the next several years.

-Despite what is suggested by the photo here on Amazon, the EL8BS2 Electrolux One Pet Hand Powerbrush Accessory is *NOT* included when you buy this vacuum from Amazon. It is included on some other sites, but note the increase in price. Just be warned that if you buy it from Amazon, you''ll have to buy this tool separately.

-I think there was a slot to store one tool on the outside of the canister, but overall, there''s no dedicated compartment for tool storage as there is on most other canister vacuums. However, the crevice tool and dusting brush do snap into the underside of the handle area.

-Overall suction and amount of dirt and pet hair picked up by this vacuum seemed to just be so-so.

At the end of the day, it became clear that although this vac seemed to have solid build quality and a good warranty, it would not be a keeper mainly due to the small dust bag size and because over the overall poor maneuverability. We ended up going with the hard-to-find Electrolux Ultrasilencer Delux, which has sealed HEPA filtration and a better designed handle. Our second best choice was the Panasonic "OptiFlow" Canister Vacuum Cleaner, Twight Green, MC-CG917, which I highly recommend if you have a smaller budget.

i haven''t had any problems with this vacuum. i bought it to replace a two year old sears kenmore, which was an expensive clunker that fell apart, so we decided to buy a cheap canister. bought this in sam''s club for around 250.00. and fell in love with it from the first day. the suction is terrific, The hose is a bit stiff and does fight you and it could swivel better, but the canister stays put on the floor and follows you well. The attachments are easy to get to, easy to get on and off. The vac.just does the job like a good little elf. i''ve had this for about four months now and actually enjoy using it. far superior to the big, pricey kenmore. smaller but just as powerful. the brush head is great. very wide, so it covers a large area an easy to get under furniture. i am planning to get another one for upstairs to replace that kenmore. i highly recc. this item.

I love my vacuum!

I have four parrots, so the first test was running the carpet head over their "spills", it made a totally clean path trough it with no seeds, crumbs, pellets and what not coming back out and hitting my legs, nor spraying out the side. It''s a first, and I have had many other vacuums. I tried it around the Christmas tree, and it just sucked up those pesky sticky pine needles, without clogging the brush or hose. Then I tried it on my hardwood floors, and it got every little piece of dirt from there too. What I have done before is to go over them with my regular vacuum, and then use my little Swiffer vacuum to get all the fine stuff that always was left behind... No more! :D

I saw that some people have problems with the hose kinking and the canister tipping. I can''t say that I have experienced the same. The hose swivels like a dream, and the canister stays upright the whole time. Nor do I have problems with the power tool coming off, like I saw some customers comment upon.

The reason for me finally deciding upon an Electrolux was that I remember being a small child (some 45 years ago) and my mom had an old Electrolux canister vacuum. As it was getting up in age my brother got her a new non-Electolux pretty expensive vacuum. I think it was a Panasonic. Well, she tried it, got rid of it and went back to using her then already old Electrolux. I know she had hers for over 35 years. I don''t know if mine will last as long, probably not, but that''s not really the point. It''s that I also remembered her saying that her new "fancy" vacuum, did not clean nearly as well as her old trusted Elecrolux.

I only wish that it came with a stair attachment.....

I purchased this vacuum a few months ago and can honestly say I really enjoy cleaning with this vacuum and I do not like vacuuming. It has powerful suction and cleans bare floors, wood floors and carpets very well. I did lots of research before purchasing this vacuum. I needed one that was not too heavy as my old kenmore was as I have to carry it upstairs and one that was good on carpets, as I have a dog. So far, it has been fine. The bare floor brush is wider than the one on my kenmore, which can create issues for manuevering around items at times, but it can also help get the job done quicker as well. The hose is a bit thin and can get twisted at times, but I really haven''t had major issues with this and it has not caused the vacuum to tip. There is no on board storage for all the attachments, just a few of them. This may help to keep the weight down. I got this at my local BJ''s for about $350. I am happy with my purchase.

Hamilton Beach TrueAir Room Odor Eliminator

Hamilton Beach TrueAir Room Odor EliminatorI smoke. There I said it. I smoke in my little office while I work. At least, I don''t drink while I work. Now that would be scary. Anyway, being a smoker doesn''t preclude me from wanting a fresh-smelling space. I keep a glass of white vinegar around my workspace. It does work, just not as well. I also go broke buying those Glade Plug-Ins every few weeks.

So I figured, why not go for broke and try out this little doodad? I admit to being a bit skeptical at first. Could this doodad REALLY eradicate the residual smell that all my other `devices'' couldn''t?

Well...Yes! Granted, the doodad takes three filters, which can be pricey but honestly no more so than stocking up on the Plug-Ins. Also there are times when all I want to smell is fresh air, not fragrance masking the scent (or stench, if you will). By the way, the doodad works so quietly that, at first, I thought it wasn''t working. Honestly, I smoke louder than it operates. Impressive, let me tell you.

A week later, I tested it out. I had a non-smoking friend walk in to my workspace. He asked, "did you stop smoking?" I answered in the only way I knew. I lit a cigarette and smirked.

Well done Hamilton Beach!

My daughter''s room stinks. I don''t mean it has an unpleasant odor, or it has a faint smell. I mean it STINKS. She is a teenager, so I am going to just grin and bear it for the next 18 months until she goes to college. So, what makes her room so offensive? Number one is probably the dog. He is housebroken, just not in DD''s room. Yes, he feels that her room is his toilet. To this end we have removed all the carpet and she only has bare concrete floors. The dog doesn''t seem to mind. She also has a collection of dishes, bowls, and cups containing various foodstuffs in various stages of decomposition. She plans on majoring in biochemistry in college,so I''ll give her the benefit of the doubt here. Then there is her laundry. She is an athletic sprite and she works hard when she works out. Once, she left her clothes in a sealed plastic bag for over a week. We probably could have sold that stank to the government to use in biochemical warfare. Her shoes, socks, shorts, leggings, shirts, jackets, all stink. She keeps them in either the laundry hamper or scattered throughout the floor.

Now I know a lot of you are saying "make that kid clean her darn room!". I hear you Mom, yes you did raise me better than that. BUT my parenting style is "choose your battles". She gets good grades, she holds down a job, she is neat and clean when she goes out in public, and she is a good kid. So I''m not fighting the CLEAN YOUR ROOM fight anymore. I got the Hamilton Beach TruAir Room Odor Eliminator instead.

This thing is magic. Her room is 12 x 15 and stays closed up pretty much all the time. She keeps this little box plugged in and running 24/7. It is on a nightstand and not really centered in the room, but it doesn''t seem to matter. Her room doesn''t smell like The Bog of Eternal Stench anymore. It smells... sort of normal. So for that, I give it two thumbs up!

We also have a great big Honeywell air purifier that is very large and very round and very loud. If I had to guess it''s size I''d say it is as big around as a bar stool and as tall as the average Joe''s knee. It cost over $125 and the filters are crazy expensive. This little Hamilton Beach works better, quieter and cheaper. It''s a no brainer.

And in the Fall of 2013, when my little DD goes off to college, this little gizmo will probably have to go with her.

We moved into an apartment that had some lingering smells that were terrible. I tried everything diffusers, wallflowers, sprays, etc. but nothing seemed to get rid of the smell. I finally broke down and purchased this! It is amazing and quiet. I recommend getting the tobacco filters it gets rid of even more smells than the original filters. I just wish they made one that you didn''t need to plug in. I want to put one in the closet but all of the Hamilton Beach Odor Eliminators need to be plugged in.

If you''re looking for an air circulator/purifier/deodorizer thats small in size, quiet and inexpensive to buy, I''m pleased with this one. Its about 8" tall and 7" on the sides, has two speeds on top, air goes in three of the four sides and out the fourth. Each of those 3 intakes has a flat air filter with charcoal powder in it, they''re keyed to fit so pay attention to which way you put them in by comparing the notch on the filter with the notch inside the filter drawer. There is a small container of febreze similar to the ones that go into the home febreze ''holders'', clear plastic with the oil inside. You insert that and a bump inside the filter holder pokes a hole in it.

On either speed its pretty quiet and makes a gentle ''white noise'' whirring. It uses a "squirrel cage" type fan that moves a good bit of air without a lot of sound. Even on high its a pleasant sound that you could easily sleep through and might even mask other noises.

As with any ''air purifier'', the problem is getting the dust and stuff that needs filtering to the filter. Thats a problem because most particles are heavy and sink shortly after becoming airborn, or are so light they stay up and away from the filter. So I wouldnt expect a cleaner room or relief from a significant allergy problem by using this or most any other air filtration device. What it does do is make the room you put it in smell better and it''ll certainly filter out some allergens and dust that pass through it. The charcoal and febreze definitely reduce odors. I''ve tried this out in the ''cat room'' that has our cat boxes and feeding area. A blindfolded person would have no problems locating our cat room my smell alone, but after about 2 hours the cat room smelled no more. I also tried it in a 3 car garage that has a couple of cars, lawn care gear, the furnace and water heater, plus a bunch of other stuff. It usually smells like musty rubber, gasoline, wet grass and vaguely of dog poop since I pick plenty of that up on the mowers when I''m cutting the grass. After having this little cube running on LOW overnight, all I could smell walking around was dry particle board in our cabinets. If you''ve ever walked into a brand new house thats being built, thats the smell...clean, dry, wood sawdust kind of smell.

It did that with just the charcoal, I havent put the febreze packet in yet.

The downside and expense with this filter is it taking 3 filter pads and a febreze unit probably once every month or so. Most of your large room size models can go a few months without a change but the filters can be $50+. These are less expensive but charcoal only lasts so long. I may look for someone selling sheets of the filtration material and try cutting some to fit, see if I can keep the costs down.

But awesome little filter to put in the animal area, the kids rooms that never get cleaned, the garage/shop, next to a smoker or anywhere else theres a smell.

Inline DI Adder Kit Save 22% Off

Inline DI Adder KitWe here in Westport WA have had a few arsenic warnings concerning the water here. I first purchased a Mikro Delta Portable 3 Stage RO System (Mighty Mite) because it was the easiest ( least expensive and most positive reviews)system to install. I discovered I needed to expand to an in-line DI cartridge to fully remove the arsenic.

Unit arrived quickly and was easy to install and was compatible with the Abundant Flow Mikro Delta Portable 3 Stage RO System (Mighty Mite) see pic.

I do not have any way to test the water, but am confidant the arsenic will be removed

UPDATE

I have just purchased a TDS meter online ( they go for around $11.00) and my DI filter is installed with the Mighty Mite filter system. The unfiltered water measured at 106 PPM and filtered 001; note this is within the margin of error so I would presume that it would actually be 0

Avanti WDP75 Hot and Cold Water Dispenser

Avanti WDP75 Hot and Cold Water DispenserWhile it took a while to get here, my husband agrees with me that the Avanti Hot and Cold Water Dispenser was well worth the wait.

After our old dispenser gave up the ghost after twenty plus years, we looked at each other and said, ''what do we do now?'' We tried shopping for another one locally but nobody had what we were looking for and we were, quite frankly, spoiled.

What do we like about the Avanti?

As the poet put it, let me count the ways.

First of all, because of its Energy Saver feature, the Avanti consumes less electricity than our old dispenser which ran constantly. It was also noisy. The Avanti, in contrast, is very quiet.

The Avanti features a neat little safety lock on the hot water faucet, which the old dispenser did not The storage space in the bottom, while it doesn''t keep anything cold, is quite handy.

The Avanti''s white plastic square design looks clean and nice. Our old brown metal dispenser did not. Also, unlike some of the round dispensers we looked at, the Avanti is not ''tippy''. Since it sits next to the kitchen doorway and a heavy traffic area, this was a real concern.

We also looked at dispensers that pumped from the bottom as well as the reviews and decided they were not for us.

The only CON was a chemical, almost musty, taste in the water for a few weeks after we got the Avanti, but that is now gone.

All in all, we are extremely pleased with the Avanti. It''s much, much better than our old dispenser and we definitely give it 5 stars.

Update 7/3/2012

Now there is a problem. (Another reviewer had the same thing happen to them in December 2010 and, in their case, it was a broken hot water line.).

When I changed the three gallon bottle for a fresh one yesterday, everything seemed fine.

As recommended, (and as usual), I left the unit unplugged, ran 4 cups of water out through the hot water faucet then plugged in the unit and turned it on.

My husband woke me at around 11 p.m. with the news that there was a huge puddle around the dispenser and what should he do? I unplugged the unit, removed the bottle and emptied the reservoir through the hot water faucet. A seam along the top of the bottom cabinet door was wet and the drip catcher under the faucets was full.

Not wanting to spend the rest of the night working on the problem, I unplugged the unit and removed the bottle altogether.

After carefully drying everything off this afternoon, I replaced the bottle, removed another 4 cups of water via the hot water faucet, plugged in the unit again and turned on the hot and cold water. At first everything seemed fine. Then an hour later, I found another puddle. This time it appeared to be the result of an overflow from the reservoir, and the water level, which I had carefully marked on the outside of the bottle, had gone down about 25%.

We have spent the rest of today trying this and that. Now the new bottle is empty, there is still a puddle of water on the floor, tomorrow is July 4th and it''s too late in the day to call Avanti''s Customer Service. However, first thing, Monday, I''m going to call them and see what they have to say.

Film at 11.

Update, Tuesday, July 10, 2012

I called Avanti''s Customer Service number yesterday. Once I reached a technician, she questioned me about the problem in detail and I listed all the steps I had followed.

She said, in her opinion, we needed a service call and gave the number of an authorized repair shop in our area.

The repairman arrived first thing this morning. After he checked out the entire unit and found no problem, he called Avanti''s Customer Service.

The Avanti technician suggested that he look at the water bottle. He did and, sure enough, there was our problem. We''d been using three gallon plastic molded bottles which we''d purchased from the same health food store where we get our distilled water.

The bottle has four seams around the top, which fits snugly into the collar above the reservoir. When we examined the last bottle we used, we noticed some extra material on a couple of the seams. This extra material is known in the plastic molding industry as ''flash'' and it''s supposed to be trimmed or buffed off as soon as the part comes out of the press. (More years ago than I care to count, I worked as a press operator in a plastic molding plant which made glasses for American Airlines. So I know all about ''flash''.)

The Avanti Customer Service technician said this is not an uncommon problem with these plastic bottles.

As the repairman explained, the Avanti dispenser''s operation depends on maintaining an intact vacuum seal between the bottle''s top and the reservoir. When a defective bottle is installed, the sheer weight of three gallons of water creates the necessary vacuum seal and it''ll stay that way with no leaks until a certain amount of water is removed from the dispenser. However, as the bottle''s level goes down, it weighs less and raises slightly. This, in turn, exposes the four seams around the bottle''s top. The space between the the extra seam material, or ''flash'', creates an air space between the bottle and the reservoir collar. When this happens, the vacuum seal is lost. The bottle level then starts gradually going down by itself for no apparent reason and, after an hour or so, there''s water all over the floor.

Because our dispenser is over two years old and out of warranty, we had to pay for the service call. However, it was worth it to us and I will still give the Avanti Water Dispenser an unequivocal five stars both for their Customer Service department''s helpful and courteous response and the excellence of the product itself.

December 9, 2012

Update: Our Avanti dispenser is still working fine and, to date, we''ve had no more problems. I will say though, for anyone who might be interested, we only use distilled water which we purchase at a local health food for .89c per gallon. It''s also very important to remove 4 cups of water from the dispenser via the hot water faucet immediately after replacing the bottle.

I spent a long time trying to find the best water dispenser in this lower-end price range, and I finally decided on the Avanti WDP75. I had two GE water dispensers for 8 years, one was a higher priced stainless model with digital features, mini frig, etc, and the other a white model similar in price and features to this Avanti. So my comparison is against the GE model that sells in Home Depot for about $120.

Pros:

Very Quiet operation.

Energy Star feature: this was important to me, but it''s hard to know for sure how much electricity it consumes. I do not use the hot water, so I keep that turned off. The unit shows when the chilling cycle goes on, and it is not constant, so I believe the unit is energy efficient. I was happy that the bottom is not a mini-frig, since that was a waste of electricity, and I found that the refrig area got a musty smell from moisture.

The cold water is a perfectly chilled temperature, not as ice-cold as the $300 digial GE model, and that is a plus for me. The lower priced GE model would freeze up every day, and I would have to turn off the cold, let it defrost, then try again for a few hours before it froze up again. I would never buy that GE model again for that reason, and I am so happy to say that after 2 months of use, the Avanti has never frozen up, and the cold water is a constant temperature all day. That is what I got the dispenser for.

The unit has seperate reservoirs for hot and cold water, so if you turn off either the hot or cold, that side will dispense room temperature water.

The press down area to dispense the water is easy and the water flows very quickly. I read reviews of other models which said it took a long time to fill a cup. That is not the case with this Avanti.

It''s a good height and very stable. Some dispensers seemed too low, but this is the standard height, with easy access to use.

Cons:

I followed the directions exactly, and also followed the optional step of using baking soda and water and let it sit overnight. It still had a metallic musty taste. I called Customer Service and they told me to put a half cup of bleach in a gallon of water and flush it through. I did that and it still had a bad taste. It took 3 days and many gallons of water, but it is good now. I wish they could do this before it gets to the customer.

I asked Customer Service if the reservoirs were accessible to clean, and was told no, there is no way to clean the reservoirs except by adding the bleach water to the top and flushing it through.

It''s ok looking, but not exactly stylish. But its a water cooler, so ok.

It does not have the feature which punctures the water bottle top. You have to peel off the sticker of the water bottle and push in the plastic center before turning the open 5 gallon bottle upside down into the dispenser. I really do not like this feature, and I don''t like the way the water bottle just sits in the top reservoir of water it doesn''t seem stable. The top of the 5 gallon water bottle should be cleaned with alcohol or bleach before inserting, because it literally sits in the water that is being dispensed. Despite all the other good features, I may not have bought this model if I saw this. The other models had a self-puncturing piece as part of a ring that supported the bottle. I thought all dispensers had this.

Compared to the similar priced GE dispenser, the Avanti is MUCH better because of the efficient cooling system. I also like the dispensing buttons and flow much better on the Avanti than the GE. In this price range, this model is fine. If the disadvantages are an issue, then it is necessary to go up in price to something with more features.

Quick update: I''m very satisfied with the dispenser. I don''t mind the bottle-top issue, and we can turn it over without any spillage. The bottle sits securely into the opening, so it is stable. I just clean off the top and neck of the water bottle with alcohol before inserting. Works great for nice chilled water!

After reading the reviews I was not sure what to expect. But we are really happy with the water dispenser. It arrived in very good condition. No water leakage etc. We left it in upright position for 2 hours before the first use, and it worked ever since!

I agree with the previous reviews in all the positive aspects and to our biggest surprise, only the very first cups had the ''burned plastic'' taste. After the fist 5 gallon bottle, the taste was completely gone. Thumbs up!

Pro: This water dispenser does exactly what we wanted it to. We turned off the cold and just have two temperatures: room temperature and hot. That allows me to drink endless hot drinks made from bottled water without constantly resorting to the microwave.

Con: There isn''t enough height under the dispensers to fit a small pitcher under them for making coffee. That is mildly inconvenient.

Sharp KC-860U Plasmacluster air purifier Save 20% Off

Sharp KC-860U Plasmacluster air purifierOffhand, I own two FP-P40CX, one KC-150U and two KC-860 units. Suffice to say that I am a fan of Plasmacluster (PIC) technology. While a Blueair MD Pro sits by one side of the bed, a KC-860 sits by the other. An IQAir HealthPro Plus is situated in the family room with a second KC-860 not far away. Lose one point for not retaining the timer and remote control found in previous generation FP models. As of February 2011, the KC-860 is the most powerful stand-alone PIC, room purification unit available to the general public as a consumer purchase. Despite its rather flimsy carbon filter and tested in various bathrooms and a kitchen, the KC-860 does an excellent job of controlling odors so long as the Plasmacluster feature is used. Pre-filter is built into the unit housing (ala Austin Air) for ease of maintenance. KC-860 uses the same exact filters as do KC-100U/KC-150U/KC-850U for ease of filter sourcing. Ion generation crackle is clearly audible on these new models and is likely attributed to greater plasma and hence, ion output. Humidifying filter life can be extended through the use of a silver kill coil within the water tank. Unit can be run dry without the humidifying function in operation. Does not adequately cover stated square footage. CADR = Room Size = 245 Square Feet Area Coverage. Assuming ambient readings, the humidity sensor is typically off by less than 9% versus readings off a Kestrel 4200. Though its one-year warranty manufacturer leaves much to be desired, the KC-860 combines lightweight HEPA and carbon filters, electrostatic filtration and active hydroxyl radical sanitization under a brand name synonymous with good quality over the years. All in all and despite its shortcomings, the KC-860 represents a sane choice in a middle end room purification system that gives mid-high end models a run for their money and then some.

I bought this to deal with cat litter dust in a small apartment. I was hesitant to purchase this due to the high price and bad past experiences with other air cleaner products (noisy, poor quality) years ago, but have had good experiences with Sharp plasmacluster technology built-in to late-model Toyota/Lexus vehicles, so I decided to take a chance. The unit is very stylish (more-so than the pictures would indicate) and seems well constructed. It''s assembled in China by Sharp.

The fan is very quiet on the lowest setting, which was important to me as the unit will run continuously. The electronic dust sensor is phenomenal. It really does detect dust in the air that''s too small to see. I have the machine 6 feet from my cat''s litter box, and within a minute of my cleaning the cat''s mess from the litter box, the Sharp''s sensor display changes from green to orange and then red, and the fan kicks into high gear. After a few minutes of cleaning the air, the display returns to green and the fan slows to its normal quiet speed. The display is actually entertaining to look at -it comprises four vertical plus/star icons that can change color and/or blink softly to indicate various amounts of contaminants in the air. To allow tailoring of the sensor to one''s environment, it''s sensitivity can be set to any of three settings (low, med, high), to either increase or decrease the amount of contaminants required to make the machine increase fan speed. It is also possible to manually set the fan speed. The front panel indicator lights can be dimmed or shut off for nighttime use in bedrooms. One benefit of the contaminant sensor display is that it enables optimal placement of the machine to filter the air -simply place the machine in various locations, note the site at which the sensor indicates highest contaminant level, and place the unit there.

The plasmacluster feature is very quiet; a soft clicking can be heard only if one puts their head to the machine. It can be disabled, for those who may be anxious about potential health risks. From what I''ve seen researching the potential health effects online, there are no scientifically valid explanations of actual health risks from plasmacluster. The feature is supposed to kill germs in the air, and as my primary purpose of this unit is to clean the dust/smell of cat litter from the air, I am glad to have the feature.

This unit is fairly compact about the height of a dehumidifier but a bit skinnier. Although the instructions state to place the unit 1-2 feet from the wall for optimal air flow (intake vents are on rear, output vent is on top), I have found the unit performs fine when even when only about 8 inches from the wall.

An added bonus of this unit is it has a humidifier built in, along with a digital humidity read-out, reducing the number of space consuming appliances required in wintertime.

The HEPA filter is rated to last 5 years, so hopefully consumables will not be overly expensive.

The instruction manual is well-written and easy to follow. All in all, an excellent product!

Good things: I had this for a year. It was better than FU-A28U that I''m using now. Comparing to FU, the KC sucks and blows much more air but similarly loud, and has an extra washable filter. The FC was able to "clean" my bedroom in hours after I got out from smoking in the bathroom, but the FU struggles a whole day. The sensor is really sensitive and useful for the lazy people.

Not-so-good things: For the price I could have 4 FUs instead of this single unit. Secondly, the water reservoir tend to attract insects. Therefore, if humidifier is used, one will have to clean the unit and replace the water every few days. And then the sensor unit is hard to clean. it''s got small holes nearby that trap dust that''ll affect the sensor.

I tried to save a few bucks and order from another website that claimed they had it in stock. After i put my order in they emailed me and said it would be two weeks. Once the two weeks was up they said it would be another two weeks becuase it has to ship from the manufacturer. Two weeks later they said there was a delay.. I canceled my order and ordered from amazon. I got the purifier in a week!! The product itself is great. Its incredibly quiet and the nite off button is great. Only complaint, not really against the product, but humidifiers in general, you have to fill it up twice a day. But i definitely noticed the air quality difference. I wake up feeling great. I keep it in my bedroom, i dont think it could clean much more than one room..

Bought two, the housing is made of soft plastic that snaps together but comes apart easily, I ended up using twist ties to hold it together.

The ball hangs under the tap and water splashes over it, unlike other filters, there is no way to ensure that all of the water is filtered

I bought it as a cheap alternative to an in line filter and got exactly that, a cheap and less affective alternative.

This small, inexpensive, easy to install system in combination with some poly carb tanks has given us biologically safe water to drink without having to haul it from the store. Also store bought water come in plastic that has to be recycled and can be contaminated with bisphenol-a. We turn this system on only once or twice a week to fill up the drinking water containers. I learned that turning on/off the bulbs substracts 6hrs. from the bulb life. But if you only turn it on once of twice a week, you still extend the bulb life. This product has been a great solution for us.

This product is made with cheap plastic parts. I have nothing against plastic and understand it is good for plumbing parts because it is smooth, moldable and resists rust. What I am saying is that this product is made with cheap, thin, brittle plastic. I had to return it twice. The first time a small plastic fitting was broken. Actually I''m glad it broke before I had it entirely installed. The second time I returned it for my money back. I installed the new unit only to find it was unable to withstand the water pressure when the faucet was off. A small cheap hose would come flying off and send water everywhere. This was a part that was manufactured and assembled at the factory and nothing to do with my installation. On top of this I had to go on line to the WATTS website to get assembly instructions, the unit comes with a one page completely oversimplified instruction sheet. I recommended Amazon discontinue selling this item.

I have looked for an economically priced all in one unit that has a UV stage. This unit is made in USA and is very easy to install. Quality parts and craftsmanship. I researched this manufacturer before I purchased and was quite satisfied. I recommend it to anyone.

This was very easy to install and seems to be working very well. Our only concern was the marked difference in the cost of this product versus more expensive models. Water flow is great.

The unit is easy to install and use. However, good luck finding a UV replacement bulb.

None are listed on Amazon for this unit and it is extremely hard to find one.

Good luck on finding one. Based on this fact I would not recommend this unit to anyone.

Frigidaire FAD704DUD 70 Pt. Dehumidifier
  • 70 pints/day dehumidification
  • Continuous operation is possible when unit is located near a suitable drain
  • Electronic controls
  • 2 fan speeds
  • Low temperature operation

I bought mine at the local big-box home improvement store. It is used in my heated basement, which I want extra-dry as my firearms and other sensitive items are stored there.

After six months it started making a lot of noise. I checked it and found that the cooling coils were completely iced up, totally blocking the air flow. I let it defrost completely and tried again, with the same icing resulting after a few hours. I checked the manual. which gave "room temperature is too low" as the cause. Doubtful, I thought, but it is winter and only about 60 degrees in here. So I waited to spring and tried again. Now there is no cooling effect at all, and no water output. Obviously the icing was from the cooling fluid leaking, and finally it all leaked out resulting in the total lack of operation.

This is my second Frigidaire dehumidifier. The first had a fan motor failure after six months.

Obviously Frigidaire is no longer synonymous with quality.

By the way, it is not possible to contact Frigidaire customer service by their 800 number. The option for "speak to a representative" results in the computer giving a long-distance number to call. On previous occasions, I have had no luck with trying to contact them via their web site, either. However I tried again, this time requesting return contact by telephone.

This time they actually responded, but by email despite my request for contact by phone. The response was "I would like to offer you a 60% rebate towards a new unit." My response to that was, quoting the manual, "The unit has a FIVE YEAR WARRANTY period during which ''Frigidaire will repair or replace any part in the Sealed Refrigeration System....,'' so why should I have to pay 40 percent?"

Their reply: "We apologize we will not be able to arrange service for your dehumidifier. Regrettably, escalating service costs have rendered repairing dehumidifiers a thing of the past as these units are no longer serviced.

Please let us know if you wish to accept the rebate offer so we may assist with issuing a rebate letter outlining details of the rebate as soon as possible. Please also note that not only will you receive the 60% rebate but as an added bonus when you receive the new dehumidifier the warranty will start over again from day one."

I wrote them again, requesting that they honor their written warranty. They replied "Thank you for contacting Frigidaire. We apologize that we are not able to assist."

In other words, they are refusing to honor the written warranty in the owner''s manual. I have filed a complaint with the FTC, but expect little assistance since I am just a single citizen.

It is not only Frigidaire''s product quality that is suffering....

Update, 06/24/2011: At N. Ha''s suggestion (see comments on this review), I complained to the BBB in Georgia, where the Frigidaire humidifier service center is located per the manual. Today I received a phone call from Electrolux about my complaint. The woman said they wanted to "buy my unit back" for the full amount I had paid for it. She refused to call this a refund. However, she said I do not have to ship this unit they are buying to them, only the label with the model and serial number plus my original receipt. I guess calling it a refund might set a precedent. I, of course, accepted the offer and am awaiting the paperwork.

So, it looks like the only way to get satisfaction for the written warranty they have unilaterally decided to cancel for all current and future customers is to complain to the BBB. I hope many will do so.

This unit sucks water from the air by the gallons. I set it up in my finished basement and right out of the box it worked great. So well, in fact, I needed to empty the large capacity tank too often. So I opened up the back hose valve, connected a short garden hose and pointed it to the floor drain. The unit kept filling up the tank and did not drain out the hose :-(. It appears that the hose drain in the back just works on gravity--there''s no pump. So if the floor is not level and/or if the hose is a little narrower than the male connector on the back of the unit (as most are) the water will not drain through the hose the valve. The fault is poor product design. To remedy, I bought a right-angle PVC adapter, barb adapter and clear tubing (to visually see whether it was working) from Flex PVC.com. Parts: "508-007 FGH by .75 FPT (female NPT) 90degree", "PPN46 3/4 mpt x 1/2 barb adapter", and "1/2 x 5/8 Clear Tubing BTF". The right angle adapter is large and maintains the 3/4" garden hose opening from end to end. Once assembled and attached I experimented and found the correct position for the dehumidifier which is on a slightly uneven floor. Now the water drains through the hose (which I can watch through the clear hose) and it works as it should. Frigidaire should provide this setup to all users that need to use the hose valve in the back until they fix the design issue. I keep the unit running continuously and it gives off more heat than I would like, heating up the basement which is usually cool in the summer. But it''s somewhat unavoidable with this technology so I will take heat over humidity. I''ve added an image of my setup to the product images for visual reference.

I freely admit that this review is inspired as much by the opportunity to experiment with posting a video as by a desire to provide something useful. Still, you may find some help here.

Two things will be obvious: first, I''m clearly no videographer; second, this is a pretty good product.

In the space of about 3-1/2 min. this video will

1. walk you through a typical use case in a basement,

2. show you how to use the dehumidifier, and

3. offer a simple (and in many cases, cost-free) way of connecting the dehumidifier to a floor drain.

I hope you find this useful.

I owned the previous version of this dehumidifier (Frigidaire Dehumidifier, 70-Pint Capacity, FAD704TDP) and the compressor failed in just over 1.5 years. I was disappointed by this, but it was not unexpected. My previous research of customer comments on both amazon.com and Consumer Reports indicated that failure in 1.5 years is now the norm for dehumidifiers! (I wonder whether the new government regulations have anything to do with this). Note that everyone who wrote reviews in 6 months or less after purchase was very pleased with the dehumidifiers in general (as was I), but reviews written 6 or 12 months after purchase started to complain about failures (compressor mostly). Very disppointing since all my previous dehumidifiers lasted well over 10 years; and one of them is still working fine. But I needed a dehumidifiier and this one semed to be the best of a not very good set of choices, so I ordered it. I was very pleased with it when it arrived and it worked great until if failed. I rated it 5 stars and updated my review several times until it failed whereupon I downgraded it to 4 stars. You can see my full review of that model on amazon.com.

But now I needed another one. I redid much of my research of customer comments and came up with the same conclusion that failure in 1.5 years was the norm and that this model was the best of the lot. So, I decided to get the same one again. When I looked at the model on amazon.com, there was a note that said "Would you like to see a newer version of this model?". I clicked on it and THIS model came up. Everything in the name and model number was the same(it even looked the same), except the "TDP" is replaced by "DUD" (I got a chuckle out of this given my previous experience with it''s failure). So I odered it ... and I''ve now had it for about a month.

And here is my review to date: In summary, I give it 5 stars again, and I''ll try to update this review in about 6 12 month intervals regarding the compressor and/or other failures.

Most noticeable are differences from the previous model which indicates some very significant improvements:

FIRST, it is amazingly quiet! In fact it was so quiet that I wondered whether the compressor was even working. I disconnected the drain hose (I use a gravity drain) to see whether the bucket would fill up. It did so in just a few hours! I would support the claim for 70 pts in 24 hours. The old model was quite noisy and, although in a different part of the basement, interfered with listening to the TV in the basement rec room. Not the case for this model.

SECOND: The exhaust for this model is out the TOP! Not out the back as in most older models, or the side as in the previous version of this one. How novel ... very unlikely to have an obstruction out the top and that also significantly aids in the air circulation. I wonder why no one ever though of this before. The squirrel cage fan now exhausts directly up and that may have something to do with it''s quiet operation.

THIRD: The hose attachment for the gravity drain is now outside of the case and very easy to get to. It was very difficult to attach the hose in the previous version.

FOURTH: It was less expensive than the older model, which is also still available on amazon.com.

Overall, I am very pleased with this model ... I just hope it lasts.

I''ll update this revew periodically, indicating whether the compressor is still working or when it finally fails.

UPDATE (4/23/2012): It is still working! Actually, it was OFF most of the winter. There seems to be an "unadvertised feature" that turns the unit completely off when the humidity is well below the desired setting. I did not see this descibed anywhere in the manual (maybe I just missed it). If the humidity is only a little below the desired setting, the compressor is off, but the fan that circulates the air is still on; when the humidity drops further, that fan also turns off (I have not been able to determine how much lower). This is a nice feature and probably makes the entire unit last longer. On the previous version of this model, the compressor cycled off and on all winter long and the fan ran contantly.

Some people have commented to me that the gravity drain does not work and the bucket fills with water. You have to make sure that the unit is LEVEL since there is a very small lip at the back that allows the water to go over it into the gravity drain. When the water cannot go over the lip, it goes into the bucket a very nice feature to keep it from flooding your floor. But if the unit leans even slightly forward, the the water cannot go over the lip and into the gravity drain. So level it carefully or put some shims under the front until it drains correctly.

It has gotten a little noisier now; but not objectionable.

And I checked the label: it is made in China.

Like others, I wish I had read the review of the drain hose problem before I purchased this model. It is definitely a bad design. Unless you have the unit set to "CO" (continuously on), you cannot have the evaporation water drain out the hose to a sump pump. I prefer to set the humidity to the level I want (usually 45%), but that means constantly draining the tank. I talked with customer service and was told this was true. I asked if "continuously on" meant theoretically it just keeps running and running, reducing the humidity until there is none left and he said "yes". Not only is the air too dry in that mode, but it means the unit will probably wear out much quicker and will use a lot more electricity.

I solved my problem without any cost. I attached my hose at the rear of the unit as instructed (it runs to my sump pump). I then simply put 1/4" strips of wood under the two front wheels of the unit to make it tilt slightly backward. I then removed the tank. On the upper right side of the unit where the water runs out into the tank, there is a drain hole. I rolled up a small ball (about 1/2") of plumbers putty and pushed it up into the hole to block water from draining into the tank and then placed a small piece of duct tape over it to hold it in place (there is a common channel inside the unit which serves both the tank and the rear hose exit hole...if the tank hole is blocked, by default the water runs out the hose hole exit). I then re-inserted the tank and Viola!! It drains through the hose to the sump pump perfectly and I can use any humidity setting I want rather than having it run continuously. At first I tried it without tilting the unit back and the tank kept filling up anyway, due to condensation dripping from the plastic housing below the evaporator coils. As soon as I tilted the unit backwards, it worked perfectly. I''ve been using it for several weeks now at any setting I choose without a single problem and have not had to empty the tank even once.

Hope this helps others with this unit who don''t want to run in the "continuous on" mode.

I would have rated this product as 5 stars if it had not been for the design flaw.

UPDATE: 12/24/2012

Have been using it for a year and a half now and absolutely no problems...never had one drop of water go into the tank instead of the drain hose. The unit is holding up very well and no needed repairs. It removes the humidity to my desired level very quickly and although I check the filter regularly I have never had to clean it a single time.

Mr. Coffee BVMC-ZH1 Power Serve 12-Cup Coffeemaker

Mr. Coffee BVMC-ZH1B Power Serve 12-Cup Coffeemaker, BlackCoffee is one of my four main food groups, so I am always pleased to try a new twist on coffee brewing. The Mr. Coffee Power Serve is a carafe-less coffee brewing system with a convenient, delayed brewing feature, a pause and serve feature, and cup-at-a-time dispensing.

You notice immediately upon unpacking that there is no carafe! The coffee is brewed directly into a reservoir, and you dispense your coffee directly into your cup or mug by pressing it against a pedal in the front. You can brew up to 12 cups at a time, and it takes 10 minutes to brew a full 12 cups.

The reservoir is designed to be used as a pitcher from which to pour the fresh water, but since it is a square shape, I found it to be a little awkward. I use a water pitcher instead. One very nice feature is that there are clearly marked "steps" in the back of the machine where you pour the water that makes it easy to add exactly the right amount. This is a big improvement over the hard-to-read marks on the side of most brewers.

There is a digital clock on the front that allows you to prepare your coffee maker before you go to bed, set a morning brew time, and wake up to freshly brewed coffee. Additionally, there is a brew now button, which lights up while the coffee is brewing. A loud beep that signals when the brewing cycle is done. On the front and on both sides of this coffee maker, there are clear panels which let you see how much coffee is left in the reservoir.

The brewing basket comes out easily for cleaning and for adding your filter and coffee. It uses round, basket-type filters rather than the cone shaped ones, but sadly there are none included in the box so be sure and buy some if you order this Mr. Coffee.

The dispenser is motorized so your cup is quickly filled when you press your mug to the pedal. You can also dispense a cup of coffee before the brewing cycle is done for those days when you just can''t wait. There is a small, detachable drip plate on the bottom of the machine so if you spill a little, it doesn''t end up dripping under your coffee maker.

The coffee reservoir sits atop a warming plate, which is supposed to keep the coffee at optimum serving temperature after brewing. I personally don''t like my coffee to stay on a warming plate since I think it takes on a bitter taste, so I push the brewing button again when the brewing cycle is finished and that turns off the warming plate.

One negative for me is that the coffee reservoir is black and smoke colored plastic. Since that is where the coffee sits, it needs to be cleaned regularly just like a coffee carafe. However, it is not as easily done because of the square shape, and the dark color makes it hard to see if it''s clean. I found a soft bristled brush that seems to work OK for this, but it''s not as easy as cleaning a glass carafe.

The coffee is good. It seems to bring the water up to correct brewing temperature, so you end up with a nice cup of drip-brewed coffee.

I think that for people who have trouble with breaking their coffee carafes, or perhaps for people who have active young children, this is a novel take on a drip coffee maker.

This coffeemaker was bought to replace another carafe-less coffeemaker from ''Cuisinart'', which gave up the ghost. Coffee, is a must in our family 1x/day-weekdays and 2x/day-weekends, not counting friends visiting or family coming over.

In the past I have had 3+ Mr. Coffee units and been fairly well pleased so I thought this one would be a decent unit. Boy was I surprised.

The Good:

1) I liked the speed at which it brewed very nice and fast

2) The layout of controls is simple and uncomplicated

3) The coffee tasted as it should no odd tastes that we could determine

4) The water fill area is nicely wide compared to others that I have used

5) The ease of cleaning IMO

The Bad:

1A) Purchase Date: 7/13/2011

1B) Date of First use: 7/14/2011

1C) Stopped working date: 8/21/2011

1D) Length of product life: 5 & 1/2 weeks (39 days total)[TOTALLY unacceptable]

2) The inability of setting the length of time for the auto shutoff my Cuisinart had a 2/3/4 hour setting choice before it shutoff

3) As some have indicated sputtering/spitting when getting the last amount of coffee

4) The inability to easily determine how much coffee is left in the reservoir

5) The stiffness of the dispensing lever arm It would push to unit backwards and away from me, so I usually had to hold on to the top when dispensing.

6) The stiffness of the top cover lid, as it would not stay up & open when trying to fill the unit; it kept swinging shut so I would hold it with my hand..

This is not a product I can recommend. I will be contacting Mr. Coffee and see how well their customer service is, but the product still does not impress me.

If your particular unit performs well and is still working, then I am glad for you and hope it lasts. As for me and the others who have had issues, I hope we can find a unit that keeps working for at least a couple of years.

The coffee maker that I received made coffee but the dispenser did not work. I contacted Mr Coffee''s customer service and they sent me a new machine without any hassles. I always appreciate a company with good customer service. The new machine works well.

This coffee maker is rather bulky. It takes up about the same amount of counter space as my old coffee maker: Cuisinart 12-Cup Brew Central Coffeemaker, but the Mr Coffee is larger on top and this adds a lot of bulk. The other thing I don''t like about this coffee maker is that the reservoir is plastic. If you drink the coffee right away it''s not a big problem, but if you let the coffee sit for a while it tends to get a plastic flavor. I prefer coffee makers with glass carafes.

My wife and I incorrectly thought this style would be a great idea. We were very wrong. We normally make enough coffee so we can each have one very large cup each. We like our coffee fresh. Therefore, the reservoir has to be removed and cleaned after one cup each. Where''s the advantage over a standard or thermal carafe? I wouldn''t even consider this coffee maker unless I regularly filled many tiny little tea cups. We returned ours because the noisy pump wouldn''t even pump all the coffee out. I was grateful it didn''t work properly so I wouldn''t feel guilty about returning it.

With my first purchase the tiny spring fell out of the brew basket and wouldn''t go back in. Customer service said once this happens, the brew basket is useless. They couldn''t replace the brew basket by itself, so they sent me an entirely new coffee maker. No complaints on customer service, but the spring part of the brew basket is so fragile I knew I would have another problem with it, so I was sad to find out that this expensive coffee maker would be a temporary item for sure. The new one came right away too, so that was nice.

Fast forward to this morning (after delicately washing my new brew basket by hand) and now the water reservoir will not suck water. The machine was puffing smoke and shaking like it might explode. I took the plastic pipe out and it''s not clogged so that means there is something wrong with the base unit. My husband tossed the first base out in the garbage from his garage so I couldn''t mail it back to Sunbeam and now I can''t salvage it for parts.

7 months of use for $70. Not a total loss, but still not worth the money or grief. The two stars are for a reasonably tasting cup of coffee and good customer service. The product itself is flimsy.

*** Update: They''re sending me a second replacement with no hassle. I didn''t expect that. The coffee maker is still lame for breaking down constantly, but if it''s replaced each time without red tape I guess I can''t complain that much.
