I''ve also found that if you have a toilet that is flushed less than once a month the toilet can still develop mold.

These turned out to be "Scrubbing Bubbles" brand when I opened the discrete cardboard box. Not exactly what was advertised, but they''re still blue and get the job done. They do turn your toilet water very, very blue. I''ve found my guests'' questions are easily deflected by simply saying I forgot to flush, and I have a medical condition. The toilet has never been cleaner.

This is great when it actually works for about two weeks with only 5-7 flushes a day. It seems to dissolve incredibly quickly. I keep using it though because none of the other tabs I''ve used actually keeps the water blue and deodorizes as stated.

This thing is actually pretty cool and casts some decent light. It extends your faucet''s length by about 2 inches. It really does change with the water temp, and even better, helps cast some light on the dishes. It''s actually convenient. Not sure about durability, but the install was easy with no leaks. We picked this style over the others because the LED lens protrudes a little from the silver shaft, which seems to give the illusion of casting more light. Nice! I gave this item 2 stars for 3 reasons:

~Apparently this item is powered by water pressure. I have a well and we don''t have a lot of pressure, so it barely lights up.

~It is supposed to be temperature-sensitive as follows: Blue=Cold, Green=Warm, Red=Hot, Flashing Red=Steaming Hot. In actuality, green=cold & blue=warm and the red is sporadic.

Fun novelty item, but not especially useful for us to keep our 3-year-old from being scalded when washing her hands.

Also, within a couple weeks the plastic threads were stripped and the faucet sprayed water all over my wall.

I would recommend this item as it is inexpensive and fun, but again, not very useful.

Thermax AF2 Home Enviro Water Filtration Vacuum

I purchased the original AF1 from a direct sales person many years ago. At that time, I paid a little over $2,000. What seems an outrageous price for a vacuum cleaner, it really paid for itself over the years. The suction is always strong and I have never found another vacuum that works as well at picking up dirt, hair, food, etc. True, I haven''t had the need to purchase many others, but the ones I have purchased to supplement the Thermax were always a disappointment. The latest, a Hoover Wind Tunnel (highly rated by CR Magazine) was no comparison in performance.

A few years ago, Thermax offered the AF2 at a significant discount to current AF1 owners. I paid a little over $600 without the water extraction option. I didn''t need it since the old AF1 was still working after 20 years of weekly use. The AF2 is identical in performance to the AF1. The difference is a more compact design and an easier to clean recovery tank system. This is the part most people may find too cumbersome and not worth the hassle. You can''t just open the top and throw out a dust bag or empty the dirt into the trash. The recovery tank must be emptied into the toilet. Depending on how many people (or animals) with long hair reside in the house, hair makes cleaning the various tank parts a little more difficult. I usually take the tank outside and rinse off all the parts with a hose and then let it dry outside. A couple foam filters also need to be rinsed once in a while as well. The main filter is the water.

Since the dirt and dust are trapped in the water, there is very little dust in the exhaust. The is real big plus for those with allergy problems. The vacuum even comes with various oils to place in the tank to scent the exhaust while vacuuming. You can also use the tank as an air cleaner by setting it in the midde of a room and letting it run without the hose attached. Other vacuums, with filter bags or bag-less, always leave a musty odor behind after finishing a room.

I''m not so sure I would pay the $2,400 that Amazon has priced for a new one, unless it came with all the options and accessories. The bottom line is, it vacuums better than anything else out there and is very reliable. The only downside I can see is the price and having to clean the recovery tank after each use. There may be lower prices on the net somewhere, but you''ll have to live with the hassle. I have for many years and it was definitely worth it for me.

I am sorry to be so negative, but I have neverbeen so negative about a prduct. I purchased it thinking it would be a good carpet cleaner.

I have a Miele vacuum and no way does it compare to the miele. It is aso bulky and complicated. The carpet cleaner is terrible.

The suction on the vacuum as well as the carpet cleaner is very poor.

All it does is spray the water well.The suction is so poor it does not pick up the dirt and water. Then the hose broke. This broke on the second attempt to use it.

At this point it has set here a year and I just want to send it back fr it takes up space.

I bought one of these from Thermax about a year ago. I love the vacuum''s performance. You can maneuver the wand/hose into places you can''t ever get to with a regular upright vacuum (under beds, etc.) It really gets a lot of dirt out of the carpet and off the floor (comes with a hard surface broom tool) you see it when you examine the water tank. The water tank is easy to clean. However, the tank''s water gets dirty quickly and requires a few to several changes while vacuuming your house (even if you vacuum once a week) which is a hassle. The hot water extraction/shampooing feature works well too (I have small children who make lots of spills). The manufacturer has good customer service. However, they now sell for over $2600 (I paid $860 for the vacuum + $250 for the vacuum plus shampooing kit and a few months later their price more than doubled). I wouldn''t buy it for that but the $800 range was more reasonable.

After being introduced to the Berkey Light system by a friend 6 months ago, I''ve learned much about the poor quality and all out lies that the company that produces the black Berkey filters have made. They simply do not filter out all that they claim. After trying the black Berkey filters, I was mildly impressed with the quality of the water, but still preferred the taste of my Brita filter. But the black Berkey filters passed the red dye test, so I got rid of the Brita. I live in a very poor public water area in Colorado, so I wanted to protect my family the best I could.

About a month ago, the quality of my water had decreased. No priming or cleaning improved this. That''s when I started researching these Berkey filters and learned that they do not last 1500 gallons, but should be replaced every 3 months like other filters out there (more like Brita filters). This is because they have no silver in them to ward off internal bacteria growth.

After some more research, Doulton is the company you want to stay with for ceramic filters. They have been around for a long time, and you could call them the "inventors" of the ceramic filter. Unfortunately, Berkey is trying to make money off their good name by selling an inferior product here in the States. These Aquacera Ceracarb filters are the best current filters from the Doulton/Aquacera line up. The only thing they do not filter out is flouride, but there are flouride attachment filters that you can buy.

I picked up 4 total of these filters, and they fit great in the Berkey Light container (I really like the blue Berkey light container!). The Ceracarb come in 7", 9", and 10" models. These are the 9" ones, but the 10" would also easily fit in the container.

Filtration rate with 4 filters is great and the water taste is SO MUCH BETTER than the black Berkey filters. My wife was wondering why I was switching filters so soon, but she was amazed at how much better the water tastes with these Ceracarb filters.

So I guess I''m a little mad being taking advantage of, but overall, I''m glad I was introduced to the gravity filter system idea and I''m also glad I was able to figure out and educate those around me about the horrible product that is the black Berkey filter. Spread the word!! Doulton/Aquacera is the best way to clean up your water!!

Austin HealthMate HEPA Air Filter

Note: this review is for the Austin HM 400 Black model.

This purifier generates three different levels of white noise, depending on which of three settings you use. It''s quiet on the first setting but the 2nd and 3rd highest are nice for masking background and outside noise when you need to sleep without interruption. Unfortunately, my HM 400 developed a minor rattle after about three years of moderate use.

I didn''t use it every day, nor did I run it at top speed very often. I mostly used it at night while I was sleeping and often I''d go for months without running it (e.g., during the warm months, I mostly relied on my fan and open windows for fresh air, and even when I used my air conditioner, I didn''t usually use my air machine, save for this past summer).

I was going to send the machine back for warranty repair back when it was still only a few years old, but the noise was only intermittent and ultimately went away after a brief while. Meanwhile, the power cord frayed because there was no rubber shield around where the cord came out of the cabinet. Very poor design! I had to repair that myself (and no the motor fluctuation issue is not due to a shorted or faulty power cord).

Anyway, after seven years of what was at mostmoderate use, the motor is now not working properly at all. It starts out normally but after a minute or so, it begins to vary speed until it slows down and stops working. I tried replacing the motor run capacitor after reading another Amazon review that documented a similar problem, but the machine is still varying its speed and stopping even after I replaced that part. Furthermore, there is no place on the motor to inject lubricant, unlike the motor on my old box fan (which I have have had and used almost daily for many years).

I am very disappointed in the poor quality of this machine. I took very good care of it, keeping it clean and replacing the expensive ($200) filter when it needed one. This thing should not have failed, considering how expensive it was and all the good press about it.

Be warned if you buy one and it breaks, you have to ship it back to Buffalo, NY. You can''t take it back to a dealer or authorized repair center for warranty service. And Austin is not clear about whether you have to pay the shipping and insurance even when you are within the warranty period, so get something in writing before you ship it back.

In any case, you are risking your money if you buy one you cannot assume you will get a quality product.

UPDATE: January 15, 2012 I did ultimately get some Zoomspout oil into the motor, even though it''s clearly not meant to be lubricated. That definitely helped. I was able to get this thing to run for at least a half hour without any problems (I probably could''ve run it longer without issues). But when I looked inside after each test run, I noticed some oil getting to places where it shouldn''t. Good thing I removed the filter, because I could have ruined that. I also notice a faint electrical burning smell in the motor housing after each run.

So, I decided to get a used HM 400 on eBay. I also got a couple of Austin Juniors (HM 200s). I now run one of the little ones quite a bit and it''s a nice machine.

The people at Austin Air have been helpful to me on the phone and online. But I wonder about the quality of their newer machines. Two machines I got from eBay are older, more than ten years old, and I think they''re better made than the one I already had, which I bought new in 2004. So, I think the issues with their products are probably more from the newer machines, which I think are made in China now.

One other note: the new filter I bought for the HM 200 (Austin Jr.) was defective and I had to return it after only about three weeks'' use. But my filter was exchanged, with free shipping and with no questions asked.

Why do I continue with Austin Air purifiers amidst such issues? Nothing beats them when they''re working properly. They make great white noise if you want it (you can use a quiet setting if you don''t want white noise), they really do seem to clean the air, they''re economical (other machines require about $15-$30 a month in new filters while Austin filters can last 3-5 years), and the older ones are pretty durable.

Overall I''ve been very impressed with the product. It is super easy to set up and works great. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that one tip of diverter valve that attaches to the faucet and diverts the water to the filter broke. I called the company and they were aware of the manufacture defect. They were very friendly and helpful. They put a whole new "diverter valve attachment" in the mail that same day. After changing out the part we have had no other problems at all after several months of substantial use.

This unit was easy to setup and works well. The water taste changed for the better and the smell of the water is changed. I use this in conjuction with a brita water filter. I try not to buy bottled water and the combination of the brita and water guardian help in reducing the number of disposable plastic bottles. Considering bottled water quality is questionable and water quality locally is good, using local tap water to satisfy thirst is considerably cheaper using this beefy filter.

In terms of water filtration, it is difficult for a laymen to tell the difference between filters but using the filter definitely reduces oder and changes taste.

The reason for the 4 is like the previous reviewer, I had one of the attachments that diverts water fail on me. I will have to try and call them to get that fix, but overall water quality is improved.

It''s supposed to fit into these grooves to form a tight seal and nudge the unit open but the hand tool is too loose and the knobs just slide right out of the grooves. Brita Marina Complete Water Filtration Pitcher Save 16% Off

I have been using Brita''s pitcher for 4-5 years and used three different types: Atlantis, slim and a classic. Initially the slim and classic had the same loose sprout problem that you would basically need two hands (one holding the lid, one holding the handle) in order to pour the water out without spilling it, the Atlantis worked flawlessly thanks to a snug-fit upper sprout (with water it would be very hard for the upper water container to fall out). Until recently I noticed that the slim pitcher had this carbon particle leaking into after filtration water problem. I''ve been following the Brita instruction for filter change since day one (immerse it in cold water for 15min and at least wait until the 3rd filtration to drink the water). Reason behind this instruction is simple, there might be loose carbon particles in the lower part of filter, so when you have water coming through it the carbon particles flow with it and stay in your filtered water compartment. However, after 2-3 filtration, the loose particles should be washed away already, and you should get clear water after that if the seal between your filter and the upper water compartment is tight. You''ll see the carbon particles floating in your upper water compartment (pre-filtered water), but those should not be leaking down to the filtered water container. I normally use a dark color mug and never even thought about this problem until one-day I started to use a white mug, I noticed my water had black particles. Tried with new filters, tried with cleaning the pitcher and mug, all failed, which lead me to think it''s the seal problem. Saw people complaining the same on Amazon reviews too, so it sounds like a design flaw.

Anyway, I started to look for upgrades. Thought about the Grand version as well as the space saver version, but they all had similar loose sprout complaints. I personally did not care about using two hands when pouring water, however, since my Atlantis worked out pretty well, it made no sense to get a different model with this problem. So far this Marina pitcher has best/consistent positive reviews as the Atlantis and Classic (which I knew work well), so I went with this one. Just got this package and got my filter prepared and water filtered. Everything worked as expected and I did notice several improvements in the design.

1. Brita apparently heard the loose sprout complaints, and this time, they used two small plastic hooks to snap upper compartment on to the lower container. The attachment is pretty tight, I tried a few times to see if I could get it off and clean the lower part for first usage, but did not want to risk breaking the hooks.

2. As one of the previous reviews said, the round bell shape of container did center the water weight better and I could pour the water out with one hand no problem, but I normally put my thumb on the lid just in case, so I can''t say if you only hold the handle and pour it, if the lid would fall out.

3. No carbon particles in my filtered water.

Enough for the pros, and here are a few cons that bring it to 4 star:

1. Unlike the Atlantis, the lid in this pitcher sits on the upper container pretty loosely. That''s why in my Pros #2, I said I used my thumb to press on it a little. But my feeling is, since the better centered geometry, it might not cause the spillage anyway.

2. the indicator is a nice plus, but the battery is non-replaceable and lasts for only 5 years according to the manual.

3. The handle is a empty tube type of deal with an open top, the bottom is not completely sealed nor open, so if you overfill the water or you faucet water goes sideways into the handle, it would slowly leaked out from the bottom of that handle onto your table or counter.

Overall, it looks like a good upgrade.

I have been a BRITA owner for years and I love the new sleek design of the BRITA Marina pitcher. I would highly recommend purchasing this product. At last a pitcher you can pour from while water is still filtering without any spillage of unfiltered to filtered water...yay

I have not purchased a Brita pitcher in many years, but it seems like they''ve really stepped up the quality with this new design. I love the sleek, modern look. I also love that it is still the same easy "fill-er-up" pitcher I remember. The light indicating whether the filter is still good is a great addition as well. The only very small drawbacks are that the handle is not closed at the top, so there is a possiblility of getting water in there, and the lid flap does not lock in place (inconsequential as far as I can tell). Also, the battery/bulb for the filter indicator are not able to be replaced, so when they go out in 5 years, that''s it.

This product comes with the pitcher and one regular Brita filter. Because I know I can trust their filters, I am glad Brita has come out with an alternative to the classic white, boxy pitchers they started with.

If you''re alone I recommend that you sew the filter cloth onto a wire loop or something so that it can be held in place with one hand -that''s what I did, and it worked great.

I bought this for emergency use. Living near the coast of NC it is hurricane season and I wanted to keep something readily available in case the water supply gets tainted. I have not used the kit yet, but the low review is because the chemical tablets in the kit expire in Aug 2010. This means they will expire less than a year from now. It states a manufacture date of July 2007 (3-year shelf life), so receiving this in late Sept 2009 is very disappointing to me for this type of product. Since it will get us through this season combined with the shipping cost of sending it back, I will probably keep it. As far as replacement/additional tablets for the kit hopefully I can find them locally, because buying online I may end up in the same situation.

We used this product to treat water for 5 people on a 3-day backacking trip. The system is pretty bulky but works great. It takes about 30 minutes to purify 2.5 gallons of water and the water tastes great. Unfortunately, we received a defective batch of replacement packages and ended up having to boil our water for half of the trip. I would recommend this for scout groups, trips where it may be necessary to treat larger quantities of water or for emergency home use. Always carry a backup though!

Took a couple of these kits up to the Boundary Waters in MN. The kits worked pretty darn well, even my buddy who can be picky was complimentary of the way the water tasted, clean and clear. It seems to be a fairly easy way to produce a good amount of safe and tasty drinking water in an acceptable amount of time. It works just as described, though the included cloth filter does and will start to "clog up" even in fairly clear water such as encountered at the BWCA. I would recommend bringing a couple of extra clean, white handkerchiefs to use as additional filters to catch all the gunk from going into the 2nd water container, as it will make the process a whole lot faster. But I would and will definitely use this again.

Pro''s:

-slightly higher water volume than the Maytag model

-OK tasting water

-did not leak

-comes with the stick on date stamp, so you know when to change the filter

Cons:

-longer in length than the Maytag, really not an issue for me, but could be depending on your fridge''s shelving.

-I returned this filter because it left a plastic or bitter taste to the water. I fill a quart bottle each day for drinking at work. I was immediately able to taste the difference between this filter and the Maytag one. But, I left it installed hoping that it would go away after a week or so of use. But it didn''t, so I returned it.

It''s not like I''m a picky water drinker either. I''m totally happy with cheap bottled water like Costco''s Kirkland brand more than the expensive stuff like Evian & Fuji and the like. But, the "plasticky" taste was something I really couldn''t live with. I gave it 3 stars because the product worked well and build quality was fine. Taste is subjective, so others might like the water it produces just fine.

The iron takes forever to heat up. The steam is barely there even on "high" volume. I had a Rowenta before this and it was 100% better. The iron shuts down way too soon and then you have to wait forever for it to heat up again. A total waste of money!

This water cooler is very reasonably priced and a worthwhile investment for my office. It took about a week for the initial "smokey" taste to wear off but now the water tastes great. The cold is very cold and the hot is very hot. I was pleased to find a safety feature on the hot water handle.

The dispenser is smaller and shorter than it appears in photo. That''s why it''s so cheap. We bought one and returned it the same day when we got it due to an electric shock and malfunctioning. Pay more to get a better one if you plan to use it for more than a few years.

PROS:

This unit is quiet (on quietmist setting), does humidify a large space, and has a convenient humidity setting/readout, not to mention a large 4gallon tank. So yes, it does its job as it''s supposed to.

CONS:

and this is a big CON job. Have you ever wondered why this 4-gallon humidifier is ~$70 when 1-2 gallon quiet mist tanks are going for around the same price? THIS IS WHY: The filters cost about $10 and you''ll know it''s time to change it when you smell a dead rat every two weeks you can''t cop out and pretend it''s not there b/c whatever that filter does soaking in water, it really puts out some foul smell when it''s "time to change". Say you''ll need a humidifier to operate for 4 months in the winter (most likely way longer), that''s 8 x $10 = $80 just to keep this thing going. Moreover, if you read the description of this item, it recommends you clean it EVERY DAY sorry dudes, I''ve got a job, wife and kids, i don''t need to add a humidifier to the family feeding and cleaning schedule.

I''ve "downgraded" to a 1-gallon humidifier that lasts the night in a 400sq foot room that''s ALL you need people. Forget the 4-gallon filter-guzzler.

I bought this as a replacement for the Hamilton Beach model which I have had for years. I learned the trick to keeping it from getting smelly....let the tank run out of water but keep the machine running. It dries out the filter. The filter gets smelly when it remains constantly wet. Since we work during the day, this isn''t a problem. I fill the tank half-full at bedtime and then ignore it. By 10AM the next morning, the tank will be empty and the fan will blow dry the filter until I fill the tank again, the next evening. Seems to work.

Piece of trash! If you''re reading reviews written just after someone bought this thing, ignore them. Sure it''s all fine and dandy in the beginning...I have used this humidifier for 2 seasons (total of about 7 months, and have had to replace the cap and gasket 3 times. The new cap they just sent me STILL LEAKS all over the floor, rendering the entire thing useless. I give up! And on top of that, when it DID work, I had to replace the filter every 10 days or so (not every 3 months as they advertise). My friend down the street with the same humidifier has the same problem. After a week or so, it starts turning brown and smelly. And this is despite cleaning the tank and tray nearly every time, and turning the filter each time as recommended.

Let me start off by saying that I never write reviews but I felt the need to share my opinion about this product. I researched a lot of humidifiers before purchasing this one, because it sounded perfect for my son''s room. Yes, it worked great for maybe 2 weeks but then I had to replace the filter which is supposed to last 3 months! I had the replacement filter for 1 week and I just threw it in the trash because it smelled like something died in the bedroom. I don''t know if it is the New York City water or the poor quality of the filter but for every day use it is just not cutting it. I bought this as a replacement for a very similar unit several months ago. I was a little leery of purchasing this humidifier based on the experiences of others who complained of a foul odor after about two weeks of use. I have had my humidifier in constant use for the last 8 weeks and I have had no problem with odor from the unit. I have been using Holmes Humidifier Bacteriostat each time that I fill the tank. I use this with each of the three humidifiers in the house and I have never had a problem with odor in any of them (two with filters and one without).

Overall, this is a fine unit that has worked very well to humidy the house. It has several setting from a quiet mode to a very high humidity yield mode. We have found that we are much more comfortable in the morning when the humidiers are running -no more waking up with winter morning nose (irritation and congestion in the nose and sinuses resulting from dry air).
