Culligan SY-1000S Easy Change Undersink Drinking Water Filtration System

- Easy Change Drinking Water System
- Culligan SY-1000
Also, I''ve come to really dislike the included faucet. It seems that over time the flow has just gotten worse and worse. Also, I think its easy enough to turn that my cat may have brushed it and I came home to the water running nonstop one day.
Hopefully my next filter will have a more solid housing/seal, and I hope to find one with a better flow rate as well. It took a bit too long to fill a glass with this model.
I just installed this system this week. I did some extensive research on several filters and decided that this was the one that would best suite my needs. The price was also very good. Other systems that I considered were the Kenmore 38461, the Culligan US-EZ-4, Pentek US-1000, and the Culligan Preferred 250. This one had the cheapest initial system cost, filter replacement cost, and additional parts cost.
After reading reviews of the US-EZ-4, I decided that with that system, I''d have to buy a different faucet than the one supplied, which would add to the already higher cost of that system. Plus, the replacement filter runs about $25 more for that model than the SY-1000 (look on E-Bay for some great deals).
After all those calculations, the SY-1000 had the lowest effective cost/gallon over a 5 year span (Under 4 cents/gallon) with the US-EZ-4 having the highest cost. Way to bring value to your newer product line, Culligan.
I was a bit worried about them possibly discontinuing the replacement filters for this, but it seems that Pentek is the actual manufacturer of the cartridges and they are continuing to make replacements (Pentek QC10-CBRR) as well as sell the filter system under their own brand name. I plan on stocking up on a few just in case.
Pros:
-Filters: Chlorine, Lindane, Atrazine, Lead, Cysts, particles > 0.5 micron
-Very Inexpensive relative to other systems
-Includes most necessary hardware
-Faucet is a good height, seems durable, don''t have to hold down a button to keep water flowing.
-Water tastes way better now, compared to untreated Austin city water. Better than bottled water.
-Cartridge easy to change single cartridge.
-Much more convenient than Pur/Brita water pitchers
Cons:
-Included T-fitting was wrong size (1/2"), where I needed 3/8" that goes to my sink. The included water fitting was also plastic and felt cheaply made. The correct fittings for my setup cost around $12 or so at Home Depot. Be sure to talk to somebody who knows plumbing and how to properly fit the plastic tubing.
-Faucet threading is not long enough for my granite countertop, which is slightly thicker than 1". My solution was to use a flat washer instead of the weird bracket one they provided.
-DOESN''T (claim to) filter chloroform, MTBE, VOC, Asbestos, Mercury. Austin claims these things are not in the water supply, so it seemed ok for my purposes. I was mostly concerned about taste, lead, and cysts.
It has only been a few days, but so far I''d recommend this product. I only give it 4 stars for the poor thread length on the faucet and lack of proper fittings. The filter is what really matters, though.

First off I am amazed at how cheap this product is going for. I bought 2 of these for $80 a pop (with filter) about 2 years ago in my local hardware store. As for installation, if you know what your doing it is a fairly easy job with the kit they give you, about 1/2 hour. If your not the handy man of woman it might take you a bit longer, just follow the instructions carefully and DO NOT over tighten the fittings. Myself I bypassed the t fitting and all the cheap tubing they give you, by buying some ice maker tubing with compression fitted ends and a couple of adapters. It cost me $20 but only took 5 minutes to hook up.
The taste difference between city water and filtered city water is a no brainer, the filter definitely does its job and removes that harsh taste. You honestly can''t tell the difference between water filtered through this system than from a newly opened bottle of Poland springs water.
I tested my water with a cheap test kit and it came out perfect, ironically the city tap water tested pretty well also.
For what the newer systems are going for and what they offer compared to this system and what it offers you can''t go wrong with this. There are no real benefits to go with the newer models that have the high price tag, they all offer the same protection, just a different set-up.
I would highly recommend this as it is a steal as well the replacement filters are pretty cheap compared to most others.
This product works and works well.

The actual filter and holder work great. Easy to install and hook up. The fountain that comes with it is a cheap plastic piece of junk that would only look good in an old RV. The plastic T-fitting that comes with it is junk too in my opinion, the tubing is just press fit into it, not what I would call reliable. I bought a good brass one for less than 5 dollars. The filter kit doesn''t have enough tube end fittings for this switch however.I would have been a lot happier if this kit was just the filter, holder and tubing. I bought the ''Water Filter Faucet Euro Design Brushed Nickel
by Crystal Clear'' for it. Looks great, works great and mates up perfectly with some extra tube end fittings (use only plastic ferrules, not the brass ones).
The replacement filter is the 1000R for the best filtration. For a 500 gallon capacity why skimp on the filter.

This vac is a bit on the heavy side so I will only use it on one floor, it does pick up the dog hair well, I am not sure if the flip down actually does anything to really help with the hair, I can''t tell.PROS--
1 Picks up dog hair very well, I have a German shorthair and her hair is very difficult to remove for floors and fabric, plus a long haired cat so I have abundant hair to clean up
2 the rotating wand attachment picks up hair well
3 No bags to buy
4 filters are water washable so it removes the dust
5 The cord retracts
6 Not expensive for a vac
CONS-
1 The wand is not flexible which makes it difficult to clean furniture
2 the hose is too short and I had the vac almost hit me in the head multiple times
3 The vac is heavy so it is difficult to carry when needed
4 The hose extension is not long enough
5 It can be messy to clean out filters which should be cleaned at least every other time and they have to dry completely before use
6 The extension cord is much too short, all my other vacs I have had are longer and I can do all my downstairs rooms by backtracking once, this one i have to plug in for every room, a man must have designed this!!
7 I constantly step on the cord because they have the dumb thing near the floor and when I drop the cord I have to bend over and pick it up, I can''t reach it without bending over
8 The wheels are not large enough, my other vacs all would go from room to room without a problem but this one sticks at 2 areas that are a little higher.
You make the decision, I have listed the pros and cons, it is a nice vac that cleans up pet hair but it does have its flaws.I was given this vacuum as a early Christmas gift for my sister. I have 2 dogs a long haired doxie and a German Shepard. Obviously the shepard sheds a lot more then my little doxie. With my old vacuum I''d have to go over the same spot 5-6 times just for it to lift all the pet hair off of my area rugs. My doxie destroys toys so there is always strings and toy pieces....my other vacuum wouldn''t even suck up the strings from his rope toys. One pass and the dog hair and toy particles are gone!! I can''t rave enough about how well this suctions. I never had a big dog before and when we got the shepard I was a little worried...and then I saw the hair all over....thick course white hair all over my rugs. I thought I was going to go crazy... but I used this vacuum and it worked great. The other problem I had with my other vacuum was it had bad suction yet somehow it was impossible to move...I can''t explain it. It would basically suction itself to our area rugs and our wall to wall carpeting. This vacuum you can push with ease...and it doesn''t suck up your area rugs so your chasing it around the house. It has different height settings so you can even vacuum hard woods...and it actually sucks up stuff instead of blowing it out the back which is common with a lot of vacuums. There is also the attachment the pet hair eraser...I used that one my microfiber couch and it worked great!! I also used it on the stairs and it was perfect for getting into the crevices of my carpeted stairs. I lovee the look of freshly vacuumed carpets but this is on a whole other level! It makes my carpets look like brand new. I never even knew our carpets could look this good. It was also a lot of fun for me to use it through the whole house and see how much my other vacuum was missing....and it was missing a lot! My only gripe would be it is a little heavy....but I''m young so I don''t mind lugging it up and down the stairs...and its not my like I''m doing that every single day. A good vacuum is going to have some weight to it. Of course I can''t forget to mention the retractable cord....LOVE! The cord is also very long...so you don''t have to stop a hundred times to unplug it and replug it and when your done just press the button and it winds it back up. I just really couldn''t be more pleased...who knew a vacuum could make me so happy!! The attachments have a cool setup also....I hate how with my other vacuum I had to un-attach one hose and attach another just to use the attachments! AHHH!! This one is great you just pull the stick out and use it...and then when you plug your stick back in...it sucks anything that might still be in the hose...so that the next time you grab it stuff doesn''t fall out. This vacuum is WINNING!!I wasn''t sure this vacuum would be any better then the one I already had. Man was I wrong, this vacuum actually picks up the dog hair! We have 2 inside dogs and 1 cat, pet hair is everywhere. This vacuum actually gets the hair up. I had used my old vacuum and dumped it 2 3 times while vacuuming, this vacuum I had to dump 5 6 times. I see now what my other vacuum was missing. This vacuum makes your floors look clean, it works on tile and carpet. The suction is wonderful, I really like the turbo pet tool. I use the turbo pet tool on chairs and throw rugs, it works really good. I have not tried the other attachments yet so I dont know how well they work. So far this is a great buy and I would buy another one when the time comes.

The bamboo charcoal came very nicely packed. It appears to be from Korea, and the packaging is very decorative. The actual bamboo are surprisingly metallic, not charcoal-like. It looks great displayed in the top of the cannister it came in, as well in a vase. But, I''m not quite sure if it works, at least to the extent that the writing on the packaging states. It stated that the bamboo absorbs odor, great for your health, etc... releases negative ions and a lot of other scientific mumbo jumbo that are highly questionable. But hey, it looks great as decoration, and if it works as stated, then even better.Make nice looking air freshener. We have had this unit for about a year and a half and have carefully replaced the filters four times. We initially loved the "easy snap in" change and all was well the 4 level filter seems to do a great job and we didn''t notice much restriction; each lasted about 5 months. This week''s replacement was different, though we woke up to a HUGE flood in our kitchen with a ton of damage. Came back here and saw a number of other people have had the same problem. I can''t quite see if it''s the main part or the filter, but it sounds like it might be a breakdown of the base (although we don''t see any cracks, but can see the leaks and drips all around the top part.) This should not be happening after only a year and a half.Has anyone contacted Culligan? I have emailed them and will update this review if I hear back.Good filter but... Does a great job of cleaning water but the plastic filter case cracked after only 28 days of use and flooded our kitchen !

Mix about 6 ounces of the cheapest stores brand of vinegar with water and fill to the top line. Cover the distiller base unit with a large lid and allow to sit for about 12 hours. Then pour out the solution and use a scouring pad with a little water. Presto!
I have found that plugging in the distiller for 10 minutes to heat the vinegar solution with the lid on, then unplug and allow to sit seems to speed up the process.I use one teaspoon of this product in my distiller every day. With a little warm water, I let it sit for about 10 min and the residue cleans right off.

I have used this product and I bought my original container at the time I purchased my Waterwise distiller. Frankly I paid less for it then Amazon charges. In any event, it seems to work fine, although it''s still not real clear to me how to get the scale off the inside of the lid, when the instructions warn against filling the boiler pot over the "max" line. The water obviously splatters up there, so that tends to make cleaning the lid difficult. Oh well.Read Best Reviews of Waterwise Kleenwise Descaler - Water Mineral Remover Here
We make a lot of distilled water in my household and coupled with living in Arizona where the water is really saturated with minerals I have to descale the distiller often. I bought this product and others like it labeled for distillers. Not much to say about this product except that it works well to remove lime and other impurities left over from boiling water. I found that it works best if I boil this solution in water for about 20 minutes and then wash the base in the dishwasher. Just using the solution and letting it cool will leave a white film. Make sure electrical sockets are completely dry before plugging the base in and using it.318518-761 Bryant Humidifier Replacement Evaporator Pad

I ordered this RO system based both on the price and that the included components look pretty similar to other RO systems that cost a bit more. (And really, they do all use the same basic components.)Unfortunately, I had a couple broken parts, one missing part, and may have had some extra parts! (It was hard to tell, since the manual wasn''t translated very well.) I did go find manuals for similar products, but that doesn''t help much with missing/broken parts... (Another reviewer noted mis-labeled connections, etc, which did seem to be the case when looking at other manuals.)
The half-incomprehensible manual had no manufacturer contact info; I''d hoped to get just the broken/missing bits replaced, since this is obviously a large item to ship. Contacting the seller (LilGift) directly even though the item was fulfilled by Amazon didn''t help either, since I never got a reply.
So, unable to find the correct parts, and with no contact info...I ended up returning the whole unit, after over a week of screwing around with trying to get it to work with similar parts. I imagine someone with more plumbing skills may have been able to get my unit to work, though I''m not sure about that. But that shouldn''t matter...unless they advertise the unit as "advanced plumbing skills required, random additional parts may be needed."
Honestly, you''d probably be better off just buying the filter components, a tank, a tap, and then getting the other plumbing bits separately, rather than buying this item! (Since this item seems to expect an excess level of DIY anyways...may as well just get the same parts yourself.)
In short: this is probably a decent RO system if you''re adept at plumbing and can figure out workarounds for likely-inevitable installation issues; it''s really just a kit of the required parts that you could buy separately. If you''re not-so-into plumbing, a different manufacturer (e.g., with contact info and a legible manual) would probably make more sense, if you expect to get any sort of installation help, replacement parts, or warranty! This is the 2nd time they keep asking me to review this, and the last time I will do it. The RO water filtration unit was received in a damaged state. I had to go purchase 3 broken plastic connectors for the plastic hose. Next I had to determine where they broke off from, but the pieces inside the threaded tank and filters were not whole, making it impossible to tell where they went. I was able to get a schematic on-line from a competitor site to determine location of damaged connectors and where the broken lines went. I went to the same site when the instructions failed to mention any start up instructions.I put these in every home I buy and I buy and sell a lot of them. For some reason the buyers take them out. I keep them for as long as I live in the homes and once installed they function well. Don''t trust that all connections will be secure from the factory though. Tighten everything as if it all came in pieces...

Thus farcoffee is good (on strong); clean-up is simple; programming requires a little experience on sequencing (I''ve owned other brands and seem to revert back to old habits).
The carafe design, however, is horrible. Whether filling the water reservoir or filling the cup, it leaks all the time unless you pour at a dribble rate (for the 1st cup of coffee in the morning? Come on!!!). About 1 cup of water seems to run over the counter when filling the reservoir. This seems to be a function of the narrow width of the spout. Should be an easy fix.
Also, the carafe design always seems to leave about 1/2 cup of water in the carafe when filling the reservoir until you practically turn the carafe upside down.as another reviewer said i bought this despite the reviews thinking that people were being fussy. unfortunately the machine has issues that most people will find annoying. that said, if you play around a bit, you can get a great cup of coffee. issues:
1) manual is a joke. not consumer friendly. not helpful. bare bones.
2) carafe is terrible. all the comments about difficulty of pouring are accurate. to pour without spilling, you need to do it at a trickle. carafe also does not keep coffee hot for very long.
3)i''m finding the grinder to be a little fussy.. if you don''t move beans around with your finger then they may not go into the grinder. there are moments you hear the grinder going but nothing being ground.
4) for some reason the "check basket" light comes on automatically before every use.
all of this is aggravated by saeco usa customer service being non-existent. emails are not returned. web messages are not answered. no live phone reps and messages are not returned. between this and the manual, i have to say saeco has no sense of being customer focused or friendly.
tips for getting a good cup of coffee:
1) use a very find grind
2) set brew to "strong"
3) set machine to grind 2 more cups of beans than you actually need. to make 6 cups -set machine to grind for 8 cups -and fill with 6 cups of water
that''s my two cents!
*** UPDATE 5/4 while I still have the same issues, I did get connected to Saeco customer service and they have been helpful and very responsive

I purchased one of these with the expectation that it would be as easy to use as other similar brands I have previously purchased. The one I received had a defect in that the retractable metal device that opens to let the grinds through and closes to keep the steam out of the grinder path would get stuck closed and not let the grinder pass the grounds into the basket. The folks at Saeco USA were helpful but didn''t have one to send me to replace it but noted it in case I had a problem with replacement.Makes a good strong cup of coffee.
Stainless steel carafe means:
1. You had better heat it up with hot water prior to use or the coffee will be cool.
2. No heating element to keep it warm or fix number 1 above the steel carafe is suppose to maintain the temperature.
3. No breaking the glass carafe
I agree opening the carafe is a bit awkward and annoying.
I used to purchase a similar product from Capresse, while it was better and easier to use in many ways, it broke down in constant use at home and at work (I purchase 3 of them).

I have owned a Saeco coffee pot before (the Saeco Aroma) and was totally satisfied with the purchase as the machine performed faithfully for 5+ years. So of course, when I was ready to replace it, I naturally went with another Saeco product expecting awesome quality...BIG MISTAKE! The Saeco 10-Cup Automatic Drip Coffee Maker with Thermal Carafe and Burr Grinder is an extremely poor coffee maker at best. First, lets talk about the coffee bean burr grinder. What an awesome idea to have your coffee drip maker automatically grind the beans fresh right into the basket...a great idea if it worked! If I do not manually push the beans into the grinder feed opening in the bin after the automatic grind sequence begins, I end up with a tablespoon of coffee (at most) in the bottom of the basket once the grind sequence is completed. So, if you push the brew button and walk away, the ten cups of water will cycle through the tablespoon of coffee, and you will end up with hot water that is slightly tinted brown with no hint of coffee flavor. Isn''t it the point that the machine is supposed to do it automatically for you without having to stand around and babysit it to make sure you get coffee? Oh, and don''t get me started about the thermal carafe. I mean, the thermal carafe is probably one of the top reasons I purchased this machine as (at least with my old Saeco Aroma) it allows the coffee to remain hot without getting overcooked by a burner plate. My old coffee maker thermal carafe would keep the coffee hot for 3+ hours but this one, maybe 30 minutes tops and then the coffee gets ice cold. On top of that, the lid on the carafe, if not put on just right, dribbles coffee all over the counter and floor while you are pouring it...YUK. To say the least, I am extremely disappointed with my buy and wished I had never purchased this machine. In short, DISAPPOINTMENT!Not real sure what some of the bad reviews are all about in regards to this machine. No issues with pouring that is not present with any other thermal carafe. Yes the water reservoir is a bit awkward to poor into, but not that big of a deal. Makes great coffee, and allows you to choose if you want your coffee made mild, medium, or strong. We love our machine, and you can''t go wrong with a name like Saeco.Summit Brands IO10N 152oz Super Iron Out

This is the best rust remover I have ever used on fixtures. A god send, I love it! Thank you for making something that works! I''ve tried a lot of products and have never had such a great outcome. This removed rust in my sink that had been immovable for over eight years! Thank you!Moved to a place with the worst water I have seen. Unbelievable iron levels that literally turns yellow within a minute of coming out of the tap. This is good on toilets when they get stained with rust but was less effective on clothes that suffered the same fate. Didnt make them white again but a light yellow. This stuff is pretty nasty if you inhale any dust and there should be better warning labels to indicate this. I can imagine that someone will get seriously hurt with this product.Graco Humidifier Replacement filter for 1.5 Gallon Save 26% Off

I carefully care for the filter. To avoid frequently replacing the filter, I use a procedure that can extend the life of the filter. When the filter forms a crust, I soak it for awhile in vinegar water (usually 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water). After soaking I carefully rinse the filter several times in fresh water.
The Graco humidifier that I use is an evaporation style machine. To work properly, the "filter" must be free of pollutants, as the machine adds moisture to the air by having a fan blow air through the sponge type filter (exactly like the "swamp coolers" so popular in arid climates). Clogs decrease effectiveness and add pollutants to the air in the room being used. Accordingly, in addition to carefully maintaining the filter, I add KAZ Humidifier Bacteriostatic Treatment to the reservoir to prevent the growth of bacterial agents. (KAZ Humidifier Bacteriostatic Treatment
When properly maintained, the Graco Humidifier Replacement filter is an excellent product. I recommend this filter for evaporation humidifiers. Not a huge fan of this humidifier and filter. I actually only have this because of the noise. I bought it when I was pregnant to be just what it''s supposed to be a little humidifier and it was fine but it was loud...now I can''t sleep without it, neither can my daughter. I went months without changing the filter simply because I just wanted the noise but once I got to cleaning it...it was gross. It really needs that filter. I don''t like that the water can easily spill. Once, after refilling it the water didn''t automatically stop and it just kept going but it was because it wasn''t positioned just right...it only happened once and never again I''ve had it for 2+ years now. It never seemed very effective though, whenever my daughter was sick I always had to add another humidifier in the room but the be fair the other one was a hot humidifier releasing steam rather than the cool air to vapor substance this thing releases. The filters don''t seem to fit like the ones the humidifier came with, it WILL fit it just seems like it''s not exact but we check and this is the size to use. I don''t know why they seem different.Want Graco Humidifier Replacement filter for 1.5 Gallon Discount?
I bought the graco humidifier at Babies r us last year. They still sell the humidifier but they no longer carry the filters. (that is ridiculous). Now to get the filters I have to order them online. I do not think a filter should be more than $4 since you use it and toss it.The humidifier is loud and does not create any real humidity in the dry winter air. I could use the money I spend onthese replacement filters to purchase a better humidifier possibly a filterless one.
It is really important to factor filter costs into the total price. Many of us are swayed by a 35 dollar humidifier but do not take into consideration that you need a replacement filter once a month for 5 or 6 months per year at $8 per unit which add another 50 dollars to the cost plus shipping.
This is not worth that kind of money.

They had stopped taking prevacid type pills, to test the thing, and they have not needed one pill since! Someone also has had a "life long" back problem reduced 90%. I love giving our water to others and most of them see a big difference. With others it is like; "you can lead them to water but you can''t make them drink" (Ha). That in it''s self settles it for me. So I order two rounds of spare filters and wrote two reviews after they arrived. My unit has many buttons including 4 different steps alkaline and one acid (for cleaning), runs fast and right now I (and others) are on alkaline step 3. We all hope my machine will last a long time.

Gaggia 12500 Baby Twin Espresso Machine Save 28% Off

I am on my third Baby Gaggia Twin since February and the third one does seem to be the charm. The first machine had an impotent steamer and was sent back, the second, the steam wand came off entirely. I did notice that happened to another reviewer but went with this machine as it was in my price range and I felt lucky.
The first one was purchased through Essential Espresso (avoid at all costs) who when I called to address the problem were very "We don''t want to hear it, talk to the manufacturer" even though their site boasts a 30 day no hassle return. I wish I read the reviews on them before purchase. I won''t go into every detail but dealing with them was so unpleasant and they took so long to do anything that I decided that I would get my replacement from BBandBeyond, where I learned they would price-match even with a 300 dollar difference and free shipping!!
So, BBandBeyond gave me a truly hassle free exchange for the second machine and it''s faulty steam wand and now I am reasonably happy with the machine. The customer service there is among the best I have experienced.
The steamer takes a little getting used to. You need to purge it of water till the lights flash, turn it off and then back on again, keeping the wand out of your milk until it is up to "full steam" then turn it off again and put it in your milk pitcher. It sounds more painful than it is and all happens in about a minute and change.
Pros: Looks great, seems sturdy, is easy to use and clean, heats up quickly, makes very good espresso

Cons: There is a smell from the steam wand, it gets less over time and I am told that running descaler through it will eliminate it. (Why couldn''t they do that?) The group head is configured in such a way that you cannot really fill the portafilter full of coffee and have to leave a bit of room at the top. This is a slight bummer for me as I like my morning coffee a nice long pull and with our former machine could get enough coffee for 2 such pulls at one time for both me and the hubby. True, it is no Greek tragedy to pull 2 shots but just not as convenient. If you are pulling for one, there is no problem.
However, Gaggia itself and its U.S. representative, are lacking in customer service in my opinion.
After receiving my third machine, I sent an email asking about a pressurized portafilter for the machine. I also added that it would be nice of them to offer some discount on same taking into to consideration the inconvenience I had been through having 2 defective machines.
Both Importika in the U.S. and Gaggia in Italy totally ignored this. I would not buy from them again for that reason. To me, it would be a no brainer to comp a relatively inexpensive item to compensate for the inconvenience and leave the customer feeling that you value their business and regret the inconvenience. They obviously don''t.
It does take away some of the enjoyment of owning it
UPDATE
I no longer own this machine, it started leaking around the grouphead and after replacing the gasket and the filter basket to no avail, I returned it and went with another model. Various forums have given consistently good reviews to the Classic which is not a "snazzy" looking or programmable to your preferred size of shot. So far I am happy with it. You can tell right away that the steamer is better the crema is a litle thicker (probably because whatever was causing the leaking was not providing the proper pressure for "expression" of flavor. We decided to get a grinder also as this machine likes a finer grind than I can get in some places. After a few weeks, I will write a separate review for it but after 3 Baby Twins in 5 months, I can not recommend them from anything but a decorative standpoint. This is a great espresso machine for home use if you are an espresso lover. However, avoid this machine if you want to make latte or cappuccino. I have had this machine for more than a month now and I have been using it relatively frequently. The foamer works great but the foam always comes out smelly. (like plastic or rubber smell). This problem was also addressed in another review on Amazon.
Overall, Gaggia Baby twin is a very aesthetically pleasing and durable espresso maker. It''s very well made and it will last you a life time. However I would avoid this machine just for the fact that you can''t make good latte or cappuccino with it.
Update: 1/27/2012
I owned this machine for more than 3 years now and it has been very disappointing. The milk frother broker after 6 months of use. I took the machine to a designated repair center and the center held it for almost a year because they were waiting for Gaggia to ship the necessary parts from Italy. (Worst product experience EVER) I finally requested the repair center to return my machine (still broken) so I can at least use it for just espresso. Now the electric touch pad is broken and the dumb thing is just sitting on my counter-top as a reminder of how crappy Gaggia products are.

i love the espresso this machine puts out but the entire machine is somewhat tainted for me given that the steamer has always smelled and made milk and water taste very very strongly of some kind of oil. at least there are separate espresso and steamer boilers. seriously, think motor oil or bicycle chain oil. ick, it is hard to get the taste and smell of my first few attempts at foaming out of my mouth and nose. i called the company and they suggested a descaling agent which did help, but still for the price for goodness sake it would be nice to have that taken care of at the factory.Read Best Reviews of Gaggia 12500 Baby Twin Espresso Machine Here
I needed upgrade for my cheap Gaggia Pure and I needed to pick from this model and Gaggia Baby Class D. Sorry to say I bought Twin. 99% of coffees in our house is a cappuccino and I thought additional dedicated thermo-unit would make our living easier and save us some "waiting for a steam" time. I was stupid...The point is that though there is second "boiler" indeed it is too weak to make proper milk froth for two cappuccinos in 650 ml jug (one portion of milk in 350 ml jug is okay). It''s power isn''t enough to whirl the milk which is absolutely needed to "stretch" the milk. Of course, you can use so called "turbo-frother",the default panarello tip but you will get only that poor bubbly parody instead of pro-like froth.
With any other Gaggia, Baby Class e.g., you could do it with it''s single boiler but having your top line Baby Twin you would not.
Cons: pathetic, impotent steamer

The Gaggia is a competent, well-made machine. It makes an excellent espresso. The dual heater system works very well. There''s no hint of foreign taste/smell from the frothing wand in our unit -something other reviewers have reported.Things I like:
-It makes an excellent espresso.
-The dose system works well, though it occasionally dispenses an extra 10-20% volume. It''s nice not to have to vigilantly watch after you start a pull.
-The dual heaters works very well. If you use the frothing wand regularly, you''ll appreciate the machine''s ability to consistently deliver two temperatures simultaneously (alternately, actually).
-The frothing wand works very well with regular, skim, even soy milk. The swivel functionality is excellent.
-The boiler heats water faster than I can pull espresso shots.
-The drip tray is easy to service.
-The unit looks great.
Things I don''t like so much:
-Price. For the money, I think the Gaggia Baby Classic delivers more bang for the buck than the Baby Twin. The dual heater and dose system are nice, but don''t justify a 50% price increase. On the other hand, if you regularly make cappuccinos for twelve people at a time, the Baby Twin is worth every penny.
-The water tank isn''t big enough, and maddeningly, Gaggia drills the overflow hole nearly an inch lower than it needs to be.
-When first turned on, the ''water heater'' indicator on the front panel indicates it''s ready to go after only a couple of minutes. It''s not. The water''s hot, but the brew-head isn''t and you''ll end up with a luke-warm espresso. You need to wait the 6-10 minutes that Gaggia suggests. They ought to change the indicator to reflect both the water and head temperatures.
-Gaggia should knurl the compression ring on the frothing wand (it''s smooth). The wand does tend to come loose if you don''t tighten the ring thoroughly. I can develop the finger pressure to do it; my wife cannot. A rubber pad helps. Knurling would be better. Gaggia ought to fix it.
-The Baby Twin uses capacitive switches for the four selector buttons, and they''re too sensitive, in my opinion. They tend to trigger when my finger is still an 1/4" away, which leads to occasionally "pushing" the wrong button (not that big a deal -a second push cancels the operation).
-The frothing wand leaks a few drops of water now and then.
My wife and I are not espresso purists, but we enjoy a good espresso. We used a Capresso Ultima (also from Amazon) for nearly a decade. It had its own foibles (difficult to clean well), but frankly, it''s crema was superior to what we can achieve with the Gaggia. The Gaggia leaves me with the impression that it can make a really, really great espresso if I''m willing to invest the time and effort in perfecting my barista skills. Like Ferrari, Gaggia seems to be all about performance, and there''s nothing wrong with that. We just want a good espresso without too much fuss.
