Dr. Woodwell''s Wood Elixir - 8 Oz. Bottle

Dr. Woodwell''s Wood Elixir - 8 Oz. BottleI''ve used this stuff for years (before you could get it on Amazon) on both furniture and antique sewing machine heads. Yes, you heard me right; antique sewing machine heads. It cleans up the finish that sometimes gets filmy. Just be sure to ALWAYS use it according to the directions and ALWAYS in an unseen spot first. I knew of a woman once who was so excited to use it that she put it over a bunch of wood trim in her house, got side-tracked and left it for 24 hours, then blamed the elixer when it ruined the trim. DON''T DO THAT! It is only supposed to stay on for 15-45 minutes.

Just to warn you, the results do vary. I recently used it on a sewing machine cabinet but the finish was already too worn for it to help. However, I then used it on an end table that not only had a nice water ring (thanks, hubby), but was also worn and damaged where a heavy crystal lamp sat on a doily. I think that happened from dusting, then immediately putting the doily and lamp back in place, making it stick to the finish. It cleaned up BEAUTIFULLY!

It uses very little elixer for each project so one 8oz bottle will last you several years (depending on how often you use it, of course).

I was very hopeful it would remove the white marks from my table. However, they are still there. I thought it would take care of the problem but I will keep on looking.

Buy Dr. Woodwell''s Wood Elixir - 8 Oz. Bottle Now

This came in the other day and I tried it on my dinning room chairs. The finish seems to be getting gummy in spots and dirty looking on the backs; and it shows because they are blond in finish. Well, rubbing it on and wiping it off didn''t work. So, I then used some #00 steel wool and that worked much better. I think that I could use mineral spirits and have it work just as good or better--at much less cost.

6 Gallon Countertop Water Filter Purifier- Transform Tap Water to Pure Healthy Mineral Drinking WaterIf you decide to buy the Zen Water Filtration System, Please make sure you buy the replacement filters from ZenWater @zenwateronline.com or make sure you are buying the originals from Amazon. There are after market filters that are made by other companies and they simply do not work as well as the ones made by Zen Water. On Amazon, when you search for replacement Filters, it brings up one that really appears to be made by Zen Water. In fact, when you search for the Mineral Rocks, this is exactly what turns up,

Mineral Stone Case Replacement for Zen Water Filter Systems

by Zen Water Online

If you notice the description clearly says " by Zen Water Online" and it is really made by Purenex. In very tiny letters, Amazon has s place to click for "other sellers" and that is where you will find the one really made by Zen Water (which is $5 Less). The fact that the product description is misleading and possibly fraudelant is not the only problem, according to the reviews I have read (over 25), the filter made by Purenex is simply not the same quality as the one made by Zen Water. Please be careful when you buy this excellent Filter. The only complaints I found about this water filtration system were due to people mistakenly buying this filter.

I buy and will continue to buy many items from Amazon and this is the first ethical lapse I personally have encoutered and I hope Amazon reverts back to keeping its very high ethical standards.

Thank you,

David

Well, I''m not sure why some other folks have had problems but I have found everything to work as intended and very well indeed. I followed all setup instructions and had no issues. I did not really need the assembly instructions, as it was clear enough to me from the picture as to how the unit should go together. My only adjustment after the first run was to tighten the faucet nut with a wrench instead of just my fingers. If you use a wrench, ensure you don''t apply too much force and crack the plastic basin!

We have just moved from a house with a Nikken in-sink filter which cost over $800 and i can honestly say I like the taste of the water this unit makes better! The unit is not too quick but it is on par with other gravity fed units like Pur, Brita, etc. However the water it outputs is much better tasting!

No complaints but I would love to see a deluxe glass and metal version with heavier grade components and a higher flow metal faucet. An in-line under-sink unit like the Nikken would be great I would buy one! The current unit build quality is adequate and is very good for the price. More importantly, the water it outputs is very good regardless of price. I would buy again.

A quick update on the filter after about two months use... I really like the taste of this water! It has a clean, dry mineral taste a bit like melted snow. We make our own carbonated water with it and it carbonates with smaller bubbles than water from our Nikken filter did. Just Excellent!

This item was very easy to set up and fill. It starts filtering very slowly but after you break it in (4-5) fill ups it works very quickly. The water is very good after the Zen filters it. I would recommend this water filter system without hesitation. I am very satisfied especially since I have elimated the need to stop at the grocery store to fill my water jugs.

I bought this Zen water filter system about 2 months ago. I wanted to give it sometimes before writing a review about it. The setup was fairly easy if properly following the provided instruction. It is best to completely read the instruction to get overall picture before get started. To achieve the best result, the filter system must be setup as instructed. This part took quite a bit of my time. Then, it took almost 8 hrs for all the water to get through the filter system. I discarded the first two cycles. The set up process is a bit of hassle, but at the end you have a clean and delicious mineral drinking water. Zen water system reduces the waste of plastic bottle, which helps to save us money as well as our environment. Overall, it is a great product at fairly low cost!!!

After reading many of the reviews here, I was worried that maybe this was not a smart purchase... WRONG! Just follow the directions and you will be VERY HAPPY. This filter turns my city water into "Spring Quality" water. No more sediment and chlorine after taste. The ceramic filter really removes a ton of sediment. I''ll be purchasing a Zen Filter for my water cooler very soon! This sure beats lugging bottles!!!

Bodum Bistro Electric Coffee and Tea Dripper Save 41% Off

Bodum Bistro Electric Coffee and Tea Dripper, Red, 4-CupI bought this hoping to simplify my morning routine, but I ended up returning it. Perhaps I was using it wrong, or maybe I got a lemon, but for me, it failed in executing its primary function. I could not get it produce a cup of coffee as well as my electric kettle and Bodum French Press can.

The way it works is by filling the vessel on the right side of the product with water and putting your French Press with coffee grinds on the left. You press the button in the center and water slowly gets pulled from the bottom of the right vessel, passes through the machine, and drips into the French Press cup. On my first attempt, I filled the French Press with my usual amount of beans, pressed the button, and waited for all the water to pass through. When it did, I removed the press from the machine, waited 4 minutes, then pressed. The coffee was weak. I decided to try again, but this time increase the amount of beans. Still weak. I decided I needed to do some testing.

Because of the machine''s compact size and design, I could not get a thermometer probe into the French Press cup while it was working. Instead, I ran the machine until all 16oz of the water passed through, then removed the press cup and took the temperature of the water. I ran this test twice. Both times the water came out at 175-177 degrees F, not the recommended 200 degrees F for French Press coffee. It''s possible I''m supposed to leave the French Press cup in the machine while steeping and it will continue heating, but I usually start the timer when all the water is in the cup and at that time it is not at the optimal temperature. I cannot tell if it will ever reach that temperature since I never let it run that long, but even if it did, it would be difficult to tell exactly how long I should let the beans steep before pressing for the best brew. My Kona beans are a bit too expensive to waste for the sake of science.

PROS

Build quality Despite being plastic, every component of this product feels pretty solid. The French Press top screws and locks into place so it will not come out when pouring. To pour, you depress a lever at the top of the handle to prevent accidental spilling. The tea steeper cup also seems nice. Each piece fits well where it is intended to go.

Size Using Bodum''s measurement of 1 cup equals about 4 oz, this will produce about 4 cups (or approx. 2 8oz cups, if you prefer to view it that way). It is a compact design so it won''t take up a lot of counter space.

CONS

Temperature I was not able to make it reach the optimal 200 degrees F temperature for French Press coffee. After 16 oz of water passes through the machine into the French Press cup, it registered 175-177 degrees F.

Price This seems like a pretty expensive gadget for what it does, considering you could just buy a regular French Press for less than half Amazon''s price. Despite being electric, this device does not do everything for you.

Pieces There are a lot of pieces to this puzzle: machine, water container, French Press cup, lid for percolating water, lid for French Press, cup for tea leaves, lid for tea.

CONCLUSION

If you already have a French Press and enjoy it, I would stick with your current process.

I took a chance on reviewing this item based on the idea that a compact coffee press and tea maker would be a great addition to my office. Here are my thoughts:

What''s in the box:

1. The box contains the unit, plus a tea infuser, a coffee press, and a carafe.

How does it work:

1. The unit works by either making tea or coffee and placing the appropriate parts in the carafe. After boiling the water, you place the desired implement (press for coffee, or the strainer for loose leaf tea (you could also use a bag, of course) into the top of the carafe and you have your desired drink.

Use:

1. I have to say that the coffee that is produced is awesome. It is far hotter and clearly well-brewed then a simple coffee machine is in my experience (for example, a Cuisinart or a Mr. Coffee). The coffee seems more richly brewed and better tasting. Tea is similarly better infused then with an auto tea-kettle and a tea-bag in a cup. The tea is far better tasting as well.

2. The set-up is fairly simple with just a power switch.

3. Clean-up: This item has to be cleaned after each use. This is also not something that can be abused without causing problems with the brewing process as the filter will get fouled up without disciplined cleaning.

Pros:

1. For an office or dorm, this would be a wise purchase as the dual use and small footprint (imagine a small integrated stereo unit) make this a handy unit.

2. For the money, it is fairly well-built. Of course the carafe is glass and subject to breaking. Plus, the parts are plastic and cannot be abused. So this unit has to be handled with care.

3. The combination of the two possible hot drinks is a cool idea and the drinks are better than I would get with a tea-bag or a coffee machine.

4. Design: The unit has a really cool, contemporary design and this does make a nice statement in your kitchen area (or desk area).

Neutral:

1. In using this item, after you brew the water, and place either the diffuser for the tea or the press for the coffee, you have to remove carafe, and place the pourer on the top of the carafe to actually pour the drink. Meh. And, if you want to replace the carafe back into the machine, you have to repeat the process. Meh.

Cons:

1. Dainty. By this I mean that this is not for having a cubicle party as the amount you can brew is about two cups at a time. Plus, you have to clean the unit pretty much each time you use it.

2. Power. This is not a hot-plate, such that you can''t really keep your drink hot for a long period of time. Plus, it is missing that killer app, which is there is no auto turn-off. When you remove the carafe, it turns itself off so there is no real way to keep the drink hot on it''s own. This isn''t a deal breaker, but is one of those things that would have put this over the top of coolness.

Overall:

This is a pretty nice item and overall the good idea here is pretty well executed. For what it is asked to do, I think it covers a lot. I have some issues with the `daintiness'' which is probably because I see that I have to be careful with all the plastic and glass, and the low quantity of drink produced. On the other hand, the unit does produce a pretty darn good cup of tea or coffee that seems to make the above issues petty concerns rather then large obstacles.

Buy Bodum Bistro Electric Coffee and Tea Dripper Now

The Bodum Bistro is, in this reviewer''s opinion, overpriced for what you get. Yes, I know that French Press

coffeemakers get much pricier than this, but the Bodum is of mostly thin plastic construction, and is just

not built to stand up to heavy use. If you use metal utensils with it or use abrasive cleansers to clean it,

you do so at your own risk. The attached AC cord is pretty short. Moreover, Bodum''s idea of "one cup" is

about 4 1/2 ounces, which makes this unit only a two-cup brewer at my usual cup size. Besides, Bodum advises

against the use of fine-ground coffee, explaining that it will clog the press filter; that didn''t happen

when I used a fine grind. You do need to thoroughly clean the Bodum each time you use it, as scale buildup

is said to be a big issue...that''s a huge pain if you use the unit two or three times a day.

Lest you think that I have nothing but negative comments about the Bodum, it must be said that it brews a

darned righteous cup of coffee. The French Press system allows for total infusion, unlike the ubiquitous

drip-style coffee makers, and this gives you a very rich and satisfying brew. That''s all the more important

considering the soon-to-be-skyrocketing prices of coffee beans. The unit itself is stylish in its peculiarly

Euro fashion, and comes in different colors. (Mine is Basic Black, which always works for me.) The Bodum also

comes with a tea strainer, for those who want to get away from lame teabags...admittedly, I did not actually

try out this feature, but I certainly will in the future. The Bodum is quite easy to use, and the manual is

printed in several languages. I just can''t wrap my mind around its nearly $100.00 list price, but, if that

doesn''t bother you, and you can live with the aforementioned issues, by all means buy a Bodum. Amazon offers

it at a pretty good discount, and, since it doesn''t use paper filters, you''ll have everything you need apart

from the coffee itself.

A nice concept for the office or other area without a stove or microwave to heat up the water, the Bodum Electric Coffee and Tea maker is adequate only.

The Positives. THis is a relatively compact appliance that works without fail (but within some frustrating limits--see below), and that includes both a press for coffee and a filter for tea. In the Amazon.com picture, the tank on the right is filled with water, and one adds either coffee or tea (inside a filter) to the container on the right. When the two (washable) plastic containers are in place, the machine will turn on--heating the water which transfer over to the container with the coffee or tea. Tea is brewed and coffee is pressed down with the familiar French press mechanism so that the water is infused with coffee and the finished product has no grounds.

After brewing tea or coffee, one fits a safety lid (liquid won''t pour without depressing a lever), and then pours the beverage into cup or mug. The heat turns off as soon as either container is removed. To keep any remaining coffee/tea warm, one must remove the safety lid, put on the other (flat) lid, place it back on the Bodum, and then turn it back on. These safety features are welcome, but also *too* cautious (as described later). One other thoughtful feature, the tea/coffee container''s hot bottom (from restng on the heating element) is somewhat protected by a lip that extends beyond it, thus minimizing contact with the surface upin which you place it.

Coffee and tea taste fresh (after all, you just made it!), is hot (initially), takes a little over 7 minutes to empty a 4-5 cup (full) carafe ONCE it is heated (more on that, too) and brewing is safe. That said.....

Negatives. Yes, this will sound all "Grinchy," but, taken togther, I found myself disappointed, feeling it''s not worth the money even at a 30% discount over list price. Many of these negatives stem from what I see (others may disagree) with a over-concern for safety. I''d feel differently if this were a device that children will use, but I doubt they will be the primary users.

Temperature. While the initial gulps will be enjoyably hot, replacing the container on the hot plate does not keep it close to this temperature: It loses its heat in a very short period. IT''s not lukewarm or tepid, but it''s just not hot.

Tempermental. It appears that if the two containers are not set in the machine "just so," the Bodum will not begin heating (either that or it takes an inordinate amount of time--well over ten minutes) for a full water carafe to start transferring hot water to the other container. It appears to work best when the handle on the receiving carafe and the numbers indicating cups on the hot water carafe are facing outward--but that may just be coincidence. Basically, I have to fool around with these containers to feel confident it will begin heating.

Extension Cord. In a wonderfully paternalistic nod, Bodum informs us that--for safety reasons--they include a short ekectric cord, and that we may need to buy an extention cord (they assume that''s safer, I suppose). Safety or less expense for Bodum, I wonder...

Taste. Tea is not a problem, but French Press coffee should have a richer, somewhat oily (from the coffee beans) taste and texture. I think that the size of the receiving carafe mitigates against this. The carafe bottom is so wide that the coffee just settles at the bottom--there''s little mixing of water and coffee as you press down (with little or no resistance) with the "plunger." Although this may work better with smaller quantities of water, and even more coffee, the coffee is strong and fresh, but it does not taste very much like French Press coffee.

Bottom line. I can''t really recommend this because of the price/value, temperature, and operating deficits noted above. However, if you absolutely need your coffee/tea fix, have no easy access to a microwave or other heat source, and you''re not too fussy about recreating conventionally made French Press coffee (and if you do use this to make tea, not just coffee), you may feel it''s a worthwhile purchase. While concern with safety is laudable, one wonders if designers could have made an equally safe product that produced a more satisfying taste at a more consistent temperature.

We aren''t big coffee drinkers, in fact we never drink it, but my husband is a big hot tea drinker. Really big, he drinks it when it''s in the 90s outside. But making him hot tea has been a pain with only a small kettle so when I saw this in the Amazon Vine list I picked it for a review knowing I''d get to try it several times.

The version I was sent is blue and I''m grateful for that because while the device comes in a lot of other colors, they all seemed rather gaudy to me. The instruction booklet is easy to read once you find your language in it -it needs clearer divisions frankly to make that easier. You''ll need to read all the instructions because unless you do things just so, the safety features will not allow the machine to work. Safety features that require the pot be locked in and that turn off the heating element after a certain amount of time. These are both good because they lessen the risk of accidents.

The water reservoir holds over 24 oz of water or more than four standard coffee/teacups. The filter for the pot makes it easy to use teabags or loose tea and it isn''t very difficult to clean. It is a small size and fits neatly on my kitchen counter after the microwave, KitchenAid, and toaster. For just one two four people wanting a hot beverage this has worked very well for us.

I''m so tempted to try to make hot cocoa with it...

Enviromate E20 Steam Cleaning System Save $0.99 Off

Enviromate E20 Steam Cleaning SystemOrdered this steam cleaner shortly after I got my 12 week old puppy who is in the process of being pottytrained. I have used it on my carpet to get puppy stains.odors out and they disappeared immediately! Now I find myself cleaning everything in sight and I do not know how I ever lived without this cleaner. My house smells fresh without the use of chemicals and it has taken in some instances 21 years worth of grime off in a matter of seconds!! Try it and see for yourself.

I bought a Fogacci Topline around 2006. It worked great for about a year and a half then it quit working. After that, every time I turned around it was in the shop for repairs. The repairs were never cheap, always around $80. The last time the machine was basically rebuilt which cost about $225 and several visits, under a year quit working again. I decided I had put enough money into this machine and decided to try GO E20 Home Steam Cleaner. Although the machine is only a month old the things that are better about this machine than the Fogacci are 1. it heats faster 2. rolls better with the larger wheels 3. electrical cord doesn''t get tangled in the machine as easily when pulling 4. the way the hose attaches to the machine it doesn''t pull out like it did on the Fogacci 5. the warranty is longer 5 years versus 2 years (for the time I bought mine. The only con is you need to order some of the extra attachments like a brass nozzle to clean your grill, but frankly with all the pluses I can deal with that. It is a lot of money for a machine but I clean my own grout with this machine and it looks brand new after being in my house for 12 years. My understanding it cost over a thousand to get it professionally done.

I''m one of those weird people that likes to clean floors and I''ve been on a mission my entire adult life looking for the best cleaning products. Although not perfect, this is the best I''ve found so far. Before purchasing the Enviromate, I also rented a Lady Bug. Here are my likes/dislikes.

Pluses

* Amazing deep clean. What the these vapor cleaners do to grout is spectacular.

* Versatile. Not just floors, but bathrooms, and even our pool tile.

* Goes a long time on one tank. You can only handle so much use/cleaning and I''ve found that the Enviromate goes long enough to warrant a break. The Lady Bug I rented had the option to fill without depressurizing, which this one does not. I was concerned and almost went with the higher model, but I''m glad I didn''t. It does not take long to de-pressure/refill and the Lady Bug required filling more often (had a smaller tank).

* Great attachments. What is provided is all that''s required for normal household cleaning.

* The cloth grips on the attachment are great. I found them to hold better than the Lady Bug.

* Quality build. Overall, similar build quality to the Lady Bug, but the hose has a much higher quality feel to it.

Minuses

* I wish the cord was a tad bit longer and had a better way to store it (I don''t find it wraps very well).

* I wish it came with one more extension. I''m 6'' and the max length of the wand is borderline uncomfortable. The higher model does come with the extension, I believe.

Ordered this unit (Reliable Corporation''s Enviromate E20) directly from the company, and it arrived USED, and with lots of water from a previous use still inside the unit. I phoned the company on the same day that I received the unit, and they immediately offered me a 5% discount. Note, that the company penalizes customers with a 20% restocking fee plus hefty shipment charges (the company is in Canada) for returning a slightly used unit. In any case, I wasn''t interested because I wanted, and had paid for, a new unit. Furthermore, the unit they sent me had been used for a period of time, because there were heavy water deposits already under the boiler cap. They had greased the extension tubes prior to shipment, because apparently they did not fit together properly and would leak water. I have filed a complaint with Canada''s BBB, and still (over two weeks later), I have not received any reimbursement at all for the unit. Finally, I discovered that all warranty repairs need to be shipped to the company''s headquarters in Toronto, Canada at the customer''s expense, and you are required to ship without insurance. The customer is responsible for damages that might occur during shipping. I have read reviews that after much time passes, broken units are returned to customers still broken, which is another reason I refused to accept a used unit.

Austin Air HealthMate+ Jr. HM250

Austin Air HealthMate+ Jr. - SilverThe unit was shipped to me directly from the manufacturer in a sturdy box. It is light enough for me to carry from room to room. The noise level is loud at the highest setting but I have no problem falling asleep or watching TV when set at the slowest speed.

I have been using this air purifier for a little over a month now. No complain. I have allergies but not the indoor type. It has something to do with polluted outdoor air. Therefore, I always keeps windows and doors close which leads to a stuffy house. Operating the central A/C or heat will take care of the stale air but expensive. The HealthMate takes care of this problem for me. Although I still have my allergy, at least I have fresh air at a low operating cost.

I did experience a small problem when ordering the unit from Healthy Air and Water Products. I ordered the "Plus" but received the the one without +. The vendor did take care of my complain immediately. He offered me an exchange with no charge. I settled for a credit back on the differences between the two models. Great, no hassle and I don''t mind buying from them again.

Great, well built and fairly quiet in the mid speed range. Very quiet on low and pretty loud on high. It does move the air and I can tell it is getting the air filtered. I have only turned it off 1 time in the month I have owned it and have been running it on Med. I use it only in my 500SqFt bedroom. I would buy this again.

This unit seems like it is working fine. I have not opened it up to clean the filter yet, but it is moving the air around. The only complaints that I have is it is loud on the highest speed and it makes the air very dry. Other than that everything is fine.

Rubbermaid 1M19 Reveal Mop Cleaning Pad Save 51% Off

Rubbermaid 1M19 Reveal Mop Cleaning PadThese work pretty well. They last a while.

Honestly, the packaging tries to compare them to disposable mop pads, and I think the disposable ones work a little better. Obviously, it''s much cheaper to use these, though.

The problem that I''ve kind of had is that the pad tends to pick up a little bit of dirt, but then it pushes it around. So I rinse the pad, but it seems like it isn''t actually that dirty. Then I keep going, and in a few minutes I''m having the same problem again.

Overall, though, it''s good enough. Maybe I am using a cleaning solution that isn''t top notch, or maybe I need to swap out mop pads more often (which is why I just bought another one). Even though my experience of using this over the past year or so hasn''t been amazing, my floors are pretty clean, and that''s good enough. I do like being able to choose what solution is going onto my floor, and that is a nice feature from this mop.

I just bought one of these pads at Walmart for $5.94, so I guess Amazon isn''t the cheapest. But, on Amazon it''s only a few more dollars, and with Prime free shipping, a few dollars is well worth saving me the time and trouble of an extra trip to the store.

This product is great, it is so much better then the pads that you use and throw away. Think of how much money you can save by washing the pad in the washing machine and reusing it. I''m sorry that I did get this product (along with the mop) a long time ago.

I absolutely love my mop. I thought I would check on amazon to buy more cleaning pads, but they are more than twice as expensive as t*rget.

As far as the mop goesit is amazing. Ive tried lots of stuffI have toddlers and tile and it is always messy. We tried regular mops, a carpet cleaner with a tile attachment, steam cleaners(borrowed that one) and a scooba. Scoobas gone. The rubbermaid mop is here. It is easy and fast and works really well. I just need a couple more mop pads since every time I clean the floor and put it in the laundry pile someone always decides to make a giant mess about an hour later!

Melitta Ready Set Joe Single Cup Coffee Brewer

Melitta Ready Set Joe Single Cup Coffee BrewerI like this product. It is inexpensive, has filters that can be found anywhere, and provides real coffee taste in instant coffee quantities and time. This is great for me, because I do not drink more than 1 cup at a time, and making any more would just waste coffee time and money.

This cone allows you to come up with your own perfect brewing recipe without wasting pounds and pounds of coffee. The way the beans are roasted, the quality of those beans, the amount of coffee grounds you use and how they''re ground, the temperature of the water: all of these have a bearing on the taste of your coffee.

First, the water:

The industry standard for the ideal cup of coffee begins with a water temperature of 195-205 degrees. This is not quite boiling, which is why the "Monsieur Brew" brands make such bad coffee. Brewing with water at the boiling point over-extracts the beans, making for an overly bitter-tasting result.

Use a food thermometer to find this temperature range and use it with 2 tablespoons of coffee per 8 ounce cup of output as a starting point. Then vary the amount of grounds and water temperature as you see fit.

Now for the grind and blend of your coffee beans:

Melitta recommends that you get a coffee ground a little finer than the standard drip grind. You can easily get this done in one of the better supermarkets that has a coffee grinder for specialty coffees.

As for the blend, I''m not going to recommend brands, but the hallmark of inferior blends of coffee is that they start tasting sharp and nasty as they cool down. If this still happens with your Melitta filter after you''ve used the right amount of coffee and the right temperature of water, then you can blame it on your daily grind. With this filter you will quickly find which brands are good and which are bad in a matter of cups, not pots.

After this, keeping a couple of brief notes on what you do and how much stuff you use per cup will lead you to the best recipe for your kind of coffee in a relatively short period of time.

I''ve been using the Melitta system for over 20 years, and about 5 years ago starting using a new technique, which I like better. So here it is.

First, I fill my coffee cup with hot tap water to preheat it. Then fill the Melitta brew cone with a #4 filter, and wet it down with hot tap water. I like the over size # 4 filters, it keeps grounds from going down the side of the filter using this technique.

Next, I heat room temperature spring water in a Pyrex glass measuring cup, using a microwave. If you measure the water, you can easily get the right microwave time to produce 185 F degrees. For me, it''s about 1:50 for 8 oz. You want to avoid adding the coffee to boiling (212 F) water, it can make the coffee taste bitter. If it boils, let it cool for 60 seconds or so.

Then, I add the coffee, measured with a scooper, directly into the Pyrex cup full of hot water, and stir vigorously for 10-15 seconds. If you want, you can wait a little longer, depends on your taste.

Last, I pour the coffee and grounds into the Melitta cone/filter, which is placed over the empty pre-warmed coffee cup.

I think the end result is better, due to the longer contact time, and better ability to stir the coffee/hot water mixture. Give it a try yourself.

I''ve been using one everyday for 4 years now. I make a single cup of good coffee at home before I come into work where there are gallons of Starbucks at no cost to me personally. For many years previously my former office partner and I shared a French Press (I recommend the Portugese-made Bodum with a brazed and chromed brass frame and borosilicate glass decanter rather than their lesser spot-welded sheet metal units) -but presses are more effective at "8 cup" sizes and now I''m drinking only "2 cups" that I brew myself. Also, this filter holder is far easier to cleanup than a press. The coffee is a little tamer than that made by a french press but comparable to drip brewed coffee.

Drip brewing is really done best in very large volumes because some of the beans'' flavors are not extracted immediately unless a super fine grind is used. Small volume drip brewing tends to overextract finely ground coffee and underextract coarser grinds whereas large volumes of water tend to even everything out regardless of the coarseness of grind provided there is sufficient volume of coffee grounds. In small volumes, a perfect medium is difficult to achieve and using the right volume of coffee grinds is also important as too much will result in overextraction of the most available compounds whereas too little will result in a watery brew. Finer coffee will slow the drip down whereas coarser grinds will drain faster. Finer grinds conserve coffee beans but require more precise quantities.

With this type of brewer, you are in control of the water temperature and I''ve found it makes a big difference. Near boiling water tends to overextract tannic acids and make a bitter brew. Although some reputable experts suggest 190-200 degree water, I''ve found that 180-185 degree water produces less bitterness. It must go into a pre-heated cup.

The plastic here I understand is polypropylene -no BPA, phthalates or PVC. I doubt ceramic versions are safer.

Sometimes the simplest things are the best things ever. Nearly 30 years ago I bought a 1-cup plastic coffee filter cone that is the greatest thing for camping since boiling water. Then they went out of style. For years I''ve been looking in vain for a backup/replacement and nearly gave up in despair. Melitta delivers and then some! The new style lets you gauge the water level while the cup fills, which prevents spills my biggest gripe with the old style. My gold-tone #2 filter also fits so I can eliminate paper filters at home. For better coffee extraction, slowly pour in the hot water a little bit at a time, two or three times, so the filter doesn''t fill more than about half way. Voila! The best.

We live in a rural area and are on a shared well. The biggest problem we have with our water from the well is a strong sulfur smell. We had a competitor''s reverse osmosis system for 3 years and we blew out the main element 4 times because the sulfer was destroying it. After a lot of research, I chose this system because of the included iron filter (which removes sulfer from the water before passing it on to the next filter). Not only does the water actually taste better with this system, the filters actually last much longer, which saves money. We''ve been running this new system for just over a year and could not be happier not just for the better tasting water but also because of the net savings from filters that last longer.

We have very hard well water & with all the talk of contaminants in NJ, we installed this system 7 years ago when we redid our kitchen. We weren''t sure about having the minerals in the water, but it''s been excellent. It''s also connected to our refrigerator for ice cubes. There''s only 2 of us, so sometimes we have been a little lax in changing the filters (about every 15-18 months). It''s still going strong!

Karcher Window Vac Save 13% Off

Karcher Window VacThis little machine does the hard work for you. Simply scrub your windows with whatever you like (window wash, or my favorite, a dishrag with dish soap) and the machine vacuums away all the water, streak free. It runs on a battery charger, and it is very lightweight which is a great thing. The handle also allows for some extra reach for those tall windows for which you might rather not haul out a chair or stool. Great for quick touchups of bathroom mirror and shower tile as well. Where was this all my life?

I bought my Karcher WV 50 window vac plus the 17cm blade, it''s just another expensive gadget you don''t really need, and simply NOT worth the money, a 3 hour battery charge for only 20 minutes actual work is just not long enough, plus it has very low suction power.. OK for bathroom tiles maybe, but that''s about all, I much prefer to use a squeegee & rubber wipe blade for my windows for a proper job anyday.. My advice is save yourself some money £££££.. A decent Squeegee & rubber Wipe blade does a much better job and still leaves windows dry.. (all my other Karcher items are really excellent) but this "POWERLESS WV50" is just another expensive gimmick!!!

Saw this item in my in-flight magazine (which has some good ideas, obviously) and thought I''d give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised: the parts are well designed to assemble/disassemble quickly, the battery charges pretty fast, and I was able to clean my windows with absolutely no problem whatever. I''m not finicky, so my procedure might not be suited to everyone''s taste, but it was rapid & effective for me. I simply equip myself with a couple of cloth towels & a sprayer full of Windex; hold the Vacuum in my left hand (since I''m right handed), squirt the Windex on the window starting at the top. Set the bottle down & using my right hand smear the Windex around to lift dirt. Wipe that hand on a towel, switch the Vacuum to the right hand and proceed with squeegee action. With a little practice, the whole window takes a half a minute or so, depending on how dirty it was.

Best thing about it, I think, is the sturdiness of the product. It''s really basic, no frills, no gimmicks; just vacuums up the dirty Windex. Done.

As I said, I''m not squeamish about getting my hands wet or dirty; you could wear gloves, I suppose, if you don''t want to get Windex on them. Beats using newspaper or paper towels by a mile!

This is a tool that will help you get shiny windows faster. I have so far only used industrial strength windex and I like the results. I have read reviews on using regular dish washer detergent or vinegar, too. I have used it on windows and used it only once on a bathroom mirror; couldn''t get the corners right. I am happy with the window performance. Some facts: 1) it is important to use the tool from top to down mostly if you try to use it on a horizontal surface that has significant amount of water you get water coming out from sides the ventilation holes; a scary sight indeed, but it keeps running afterwards. Do not try to use it immediately if this happens to you too; let it stand for a while. The tank was not even one quarter full when this happened; it looks like the bursting leak is due to the design of tank connection. Keeping the tool upright on its base is a good habit when using this product, 2) There is a warning ''not to use it outdoors; I guess this is related to this issue; although the previous issue came up with regular indoor use I wouldn''t recommend using it outdoors after a rain or on wet surfaces based on potential problems You are of course going to use it outdoors. Outside of windows is why I purchased this product, and I surely used it outdoors on the truely problematic side of the windows. I rinsed the windows earlier with the garden hose. The dirty water tank is not large but it is sufficient to easily keep up with a couple large windows. 3) After a couple of uses the rubber will get dirty and leave traces on the surface; you can clean the attachment and try again or just go over the area using your conventional methods I use a paper towel to go over it a second round especially the corners always need a second round. It still is worth it as it reduces the amount of work you would have to put in to clean windows otherwise. It would be nice to have a secondary attachment so you can use one on clean home surfaces; I could not for instance use it on kitchen counters after cleaning the dirty windows. The attachment comes off for through cleaning; but I would expect the rubber to get distorted if you use harsh chemicals/tools to clean it. This must be the reason why outdoor use is not recommended. I use dish washing detergent and warm water to clean the head attachment. I wouldn''t depend on it for that variety of purposes as advertised; you should decide on the most important jobs and stick to it.

I would recommend it to those who like streak free windows with less effort. I guess a review after a long term use would be more useful to judge the performance

Before buying it, I was a little bit skeptical, BUT IT IS A PURE MARVEL ! No more dripping on the floor, no need anymore to put a cloth on the floor to protect it. What I like the most is when cleaning a big surface in two stages, there is no "partition line" showing at all. Works great on glass tables too. Very quick to clean

Blueair ECO10 Energy-Star HEPASilent Air Purifier Save 34% Off

Blueair ECO10 Energy-Star HEPASilent Air PurifierThis is the first air purifier I ever purchased. I think the full list price of $900 is outrageous and would not have bought it at full price for what is almost a big computer case with a high quality fan and very high quality HEPA filters. However, I jumped at the chance to buy it at the 50% off sale price or $450. So far it''s working really well. It''s a bit bulky, but then all good air purifiers are because the filters need enough surface area to work properly. It achieves low power consumption largely by having a large filter area so that the air velocity can be kept low while keeping the air volume high. Low air velocity translates to lower energy consumption and lower noise.

At 10 Watts on the high setting, even if I run it 24/7, the energy consumption will be only $1 a month and my electricity rate in California is a high 14 cents per kWh.

The power switch''s placement at foot level is very inconvenient. Unless you leave the unit on for 24 hours a day, everyday, you''ll find it a chore to have to constantly bend down to access the switch.

The outside of the product''s packaging, as well as all the websites I''ve visited(including Amazon), says the filters last up to 12 months. That''s actually incorrect advertising. The manual says for "optimal use" the filters should be changed every six months. I''ve noticed the air flow decreased noticeably after 2 months of use at 12 hours a day. Furthermore, in order for the 10-year warranty to be valid, Blueair requires the buyer to change the filters every six months and to send in the registration as explicitly stated in the manual. Of course, the question is whether Blueair will require proof that the user bought new filters every six months when it comes time for warranty work. Oh, another thing, the warranty is only 10 years, not "lifetime" as the websites state, another incorrect advertisement!

The filters cost $100 per set. So if I change the filters religiously every 6 months, the filters alone will cost $200 a year, plus $12 a year for electricity. With charcoal, the operating cost will exceed $300 a year. Ouch! Also, keep in mind that this is just the operating cost for one large room (up to 300 sq. ft.) and not for the whole house.

It''s quiet enough even on high that I can sleep with it on high, and on the low setting, it sounds about as loud as a somewhat loud computer case fan and is mostly unobtrusive. The fan noise is not unpleasant. In fact, I sometimes use it on the high setting as a passable white noise machine to drown out ambient noises when I go to sleep.

The only true negative with this unit is it''s exclusively a particulates filter. It has no charcoal to absorb odor. In order for the purifier to be effective, I need to keep my bedroom door closed. When the filters were new, the air got stuffy overnight when I kept the door closed. I think it was the smell of the new filters, but after a couple of weeks, the stuffy smell went away. For those who want to filter odor, Blueair makes Smokestop filters include charcoal. The Smokestop filters cost almost twice as much as the regular Eco10 filters and are also not as readily available.

It''s interesting to note that the Eco10 has virtually the same 250 CFM rating as the IQAir Heatlh Pro and practically the same percentage particulate reduction. Therefore the two units should have about the same area coverage rating. But the IQAir claims effective up to 900 sq. feet, whereas the Blueair Eco10 only claims 300 sq. ft. with 6 air changes per hour(which is the generally recommended rate by experts). This tells me the IQAir''s capacity is overrated vs. the conservative rating of the Eco10. I tried to find the CADR rating of the IQAir but couldn''t find it anywhere. Based on the fact that the Blueair Eco10 has a CADR of about 200, I surmise the IQAir has similar CADR. I just don''t see how a 200 CADR unit can cover 900 sq. ft. Maybe that''s why Consumer Report gave the IQAir a low rating.

Summary:

Pluses: very quiet compared to other brands, very effective filtration down to 0.1 micron at 99.97% efficiency, good air flow of around 250 CFM, good CADR rating of around 200, ultra low electricity consumption.

Minuses: short filter life, very high operating costs because of short filter life and expensive filters, no charcoal to absorb odors, unless you opt for the even more expensive Smokestop filters.

Bottomline: Quiet unit and very energy efficient, BUT the energy savings will not even come close to offsetting the high operating costs associated with the frequent changes of expensive filters.

This unit does a good job with and average sized room for mild allergies. I would not use it if you have severe allergies as it does not turn over the air fast enough, only 6 times an hour. It was a good buy since it was on sale for half price.

Rolls easy on castors, power goes into bottom of unit. Intakes are easy to vac once a week as they start to get plugged up with dust.

As of this review, I have two units only for two months or less. The product is definitely quiet as promised and even on the higher speed is manageable for sleep. It''s designed to run 7x24. I can feel and smell the air moving. I can''t say whether it''s improved my children''s health (too early). A bit larger than I would prefer but acceptable. Definitely a costly gad but in this area of healtchare (where I have years of personal healthcare experience), I think the money is well spent. Check back with me in a year ;)

I am unsure as the build quality of other Blueair products but I can speak to the construction and design of the ECO10. It looks and feels like and old computer case with holes cut in the top, front and back. There appears to be a very small computer style fan at the base of the box. The filters seem like normal house hold air filters you could buy at any hardware store. I am shocked at the shoddy build and cheap materials used in this air purifier. I paid over $1,000 for this item and put it in my baby''s room. I feel totally ripped off. Blueair also claimed to offer a free set of filters, normally $100, if you sent the original proof of purchase in by a certain date. I complied with all of the written instructions for the free filters and have still not received them. It has been six months. No one answers the phones or returns voice messages. Maybe I should have waited until some user reviews were available before I purchased this item. It was brand new to their lineup and I took a shot.

OSMO Liquid Wax Cleaner

OSMO Liquid Wax Cleaner - 1 Liter
  • For cleaning and maintaining oiled and waxed wood or cork floors and furniture
  • Both cleans and rejuvenates
  • Easy application, and very economical
  • Water-repellent, almost odorless, and benzene-free

I have walnut floors that were sealed with a natural oil, so they need to be occasionally waxed. Osmo liquid Wax Cleaner is fantastic! Note--a little goes a long way! Osmo lifts up any impregnated dirt (naturally finished floors still have pores and tend to capture dirt) and conditions wood beautifully. Leaves a matt finish. Virtually odor free--but still keep a window open when using, as even natural products don''t need to be inhaled.

When we refinished our wood floors, I swore that I''d never do it again. It''s a giant pain moving everything out of the house, and expensive to have professionals sand down the old floor and refinish. I studied up on the options, and choose OSMO finish. It''s been four years, and I''m so happy with my choice!

The thing with OSMO is that it''s a matte finish. I like a little shine. I had read that the floors could be buffed, so I didby hand. Yuck. I tried this cleaner/wax and it didn''t really look much different after using, so I did a bit of experimenting. I tried using different pads to apply, and different buffing methods. I had good luck using very fine steel wool to buff it into the floor, then I used an auto buffer to shine the floors after the product was completely dry. This was very labor intensive, but looked good.

I finally got smart and purchased a $100 floor cleaner/buffer here on amazon. I use it along with this OSMO liquid wax cleaner. My floors look amazing. They have a nice satin sheen that repels liquids and looks great. I can go over the floors with just the buffer if I want to revive the shine. I recoat the floors once per year with the liquid wax cleaner, just to make sure that they stay protected. It''s super easy with the power buffer.

I''ll never have to refinish the entire floor again because there is nothing on them to wear off. They look as good, actually better than when they were first refinished, and I''m using a product that won''t make me or my family sick. I''m a total OSMO fan!

Cleancaf Coffee Maker and Espresso Machine Cleaner and Descaler 3pk

Cleancaf Coffee Maker and Espresso Machine Cleaner and Descaler 3pkMy Keurig started acting funny. Coffee was not as warm, it started to make louder noises during the brewing process and the coffee sizes were becoming less and less reliable (example: a tall travel sized portion was much less). The machine was acting up because it was clogged with scale. Easy solution: de-scale.

I''ve used vinegar in the past for all of my brewer descaling and it has worked satisfactorily. However, vinegar is not a product I keep around that often, it smells when it''s used in a descaling situation and it takes up a lot of room if stored. That said, vinegar does work ... but I like these Cleancaf packets better.

Pros: they are small, easy to use, and this purchase gives you 9 uses.

Cons: is an irritant, may be more costly than vinegar

I believe a reviewer mentioned a "blue" color so that one could tell if the product was through the system adequately. For me, this was not the case. The color was cloudy white, not blue. But after several runs through my Keurig, it worked.

My method of use:

1) I have a Keurig B70 Single-cup K-cup brewer. I used a large Pyrex Pyrex Prepware 1-Quart Measuring Cup, Clear with Red Measurements measuring cup to prepare the mixture and catch the mixture.

2) After I prepared the mix in warm water, I poured it into my Kuerig water reservoir and ran it through cup cycles (about 4 of them).

3) I thoroughly rinsed the water reservoir and used clean water to run through more cup cycles on the machine. Using my Pyrex, I could watch the water become clearer and clearer.

4) I ran 3 reservoirs of water through before I was satisfied it was clean enough and there were no traces of this product left. That worked.

After I was done, the coffee came out PIPING HOT at the set 129 degrees F. The portions were even and the machine was brewing much more quietly and efficiently. Descaling is not one of those things that one usually thinks about too often until a brewer starts to get moody. This is a great product to have on hand to take care of the brewer blues.

5 Stars!

I got a sample of this product in my new Hamilton Beach Brew Station. The first time I used it, I could not believe how great it is.

Things I like:

Dissolve in 4 cups of water, pour in coffeemaker. Dissolves easily.

Run through the coffeemaker, then wipe and rinse parts. I said "wipe", not "scrub"! First one I ever used that I could do that. I was very impressed.

Two subsequent run throughs with clear water. The cleaner is tinted with a blue color, so that you can see if you have got it all rinsed out.

Then you are done. That''s it. No more muss, fuss, or mess.

It does say to use it once a week. I find once a month is plenty for us, but that would depend on coffeemaker usage. Fabulous product.

The description says it is a 3 pack, and the picture shows three boxes. It is NOT three boxes. It is one box, with 3 packets inside. This product is only sold in boxes with 3 packets, so when they show 3 boxes, you expect to get 9 packets. Other sellers are selling the same thing for about half the price. I paid almost twice as much for this because I thought it was three boxes. I think that one of the reviews even said that this provided 9 applications. Wrong! Don''t be fooled. Plaston International Corp. Air-O-Swiss 7533 Deminral Granules Pk/3 Save 29% Off

Plaston International Corp. Air-O-Swiss 7533 Deminral Granules Pk/3I agree with some reviewers that refilling the cartridge take a little extra hand-eye coordination, and is a bit time-consuming and definitely more of an annoyance than you want to deal with re: a humidifier.. I found that just snipping off a corner of the bag allows a little more control in pouring the granules. I also plug up the center cavity with a wad of wet paper towel. Wet towels are better than dry because the grains will stick to the wet paper more readily when you pull it out.

All this being said, I''m writing this review to underscore an option that the instruction manual mentioned, and which I''ve learned to swear by. USE DISTILLED WATER in the reservoir. It''s 59 cents a gallon or cheaper at your local giant-grocer. No white powder whatsoever, and you never have to clean the tank with Air-O-Swiss''s gimmicky powder cleaners. Using distilled water, you can just unscrew the water-purifying cylinder from the reservoir cap and throw it in the garbage (or, if you''re hate throwing anything out, just put back in the box which you most likely saved and are keeping in the basement). I''m a lawyer and a skeptic by nature, and I don''t think that the "purifying beads" do anything substantive. Even a fresh filter leaves that white powder. Frankly, I think that the money saved in not buying the company''s custom-designed external expenses is far outweighed by the money spent on "fancy" distilled water. I can''t help but think of the cost of printer ink when I think of these water filters; you buy the base unit (printer/humidifier) for a good deal, not realizing how much more money you will be forking over in the maintenance of the darn thing.

This is a humidifier, after all, not a life-support machine. There are two options; dealing with the vaguely annoying white powder, or spending a little extra money on something that will avoid the nuisance of cleaning up the white powder. Personally, I prefer spending my money on store-bought distilled water than some chemically questionable "white beads" (what are they made out of, anyway?? Are they recyclable? Is there any data on how much these bead actually "purify" the water? And does the production of these beads use non-renewable resources? Don''t ask Air-O-Swiss...they won''t tell you). On the other hand, I know how distilled water is made. And I can tell you from personal experience that using distilled water keeps the humidifier in tip-top, brand-new-looking shape. When the "clean" light on my unit comes on, I just reset without thinking. There''s nothing to clean. You could use distilled water for years and still have less buildup than one or two uses of regular tap water (filtered or otherwise, I would argue).

Well, enough of my ranting and raving in favor of distilled water. I think I''ve made my feelings clear. In response to the reviews from members who complained about the high cost of filter replacement in their hard-water environments, this is my "perfect" solution to you. Take it for what it''s worth.

My air-o-swiss is sucking up atleast 1 filter every month. Recently, I bought the refill packs. Having used them 3 times, I feel that it was a wise decision. I get the same performance from the filter, for 1/4th the price.

As of he refilling part, I found it quiet easy. While emptying the filter, shake the filter in the trash can. Most of the "stuff" will fall off easily. You can wash off any that clings to the filter. Shouldn''t take u more than 30 seconds to do this. When it comes to filling up the filter, I make a very small cut in the plastic bag with a scissor. This gives me better control on the flow of the granules. I fill up the outer chamber first and then the inner one. Any slight over flows, I wash it off.

All in all, it takes 3 minutes tops. Well worth the effort.

I agree that the cartridge was not easy to fill -the beads are a little tricky to get into the cartridge (they sort of stick to each other and to the bag they are in and to your hands, so it takes awhile to get them packed in).

However, the cost savings definitely makes up for the slight trouble -3 separate cartridges would range from approx. $36 $45, while this package of 3 refills only cost $19.00! Well worth the extra 5 minutes every 3 months.

This cartridge refill works great with my humidifier and is much cheaper than buying the actual cartridge. Most of the white dust is eliminated, just be sure to soak the refilled cartridge for at least 24 hours. I only use the humidifier at night and have found that it works much better if you keep the cartridge covered in water when the unit is not on.

I bought these replacement packs as they are cheaper than buying the entire prepacked cartridges, however, after fumbling trying to pack the filter beads into the cartridge, I would *NOT* recommend going this route.

The problem is that the filter beads absorb any amount of water in the air even inside the sealed packs they arrive in and swell, so that you are trying to coax swollen, wet, sticky beads into a small annulus of the cartridge without getting them into the center the small amount of money you save is not worth the effort involved.
