I''ve wanted to switch to a bagless vacuuming system for awhile, now -simply because constantly having to buy vacuum bags, remembering what size and model number, and "the extra expense" seems to be an unnecessary evil -if ya know what I mean.

For comparison, My current vacuum is an allergy filtration (as I have a couple of constantly shedding pets -Rottweilers and kitty cats), 18.0 12 amp motor, Hoover upright with 5 carpet heights and floor mode with an assortment of tools and is "not" bagless. It gets the job done, but has a few irritating problems. My home gets vacuumed, thoroughly, twice a week.

Easy to put together, just 4 screws and one is good-to-go, as they say.

Large see through bagless canister -It''s really fun to watch all the stuff getting sucked into the canister... Well, the see-through canister may also come in handy if one ever drops an earring or the Kitty decides to make a toy out of Your Engagement ring while you are soaking in the Jacuzzi -and it ends up in the carpet -never to be found till vacuuming day. One could actually see it, in the canister -as opposed to digging through a funky bag of debris -as with my Hoover).

15" wide sweeper head, with rubberized bumper guards -gets the job done a lot faster! ''nuf said! :)

A large height adjustment dial with 6 carpet heights and a bare floor mode. Dial is easy to read, and turn, for desired selection.

Very long cord -the vacuum also has a quick release cord thingy so one does not have to spend a lot of time unwinding.

2 button, fingertip, operation on handle -"Power On" and "Brush". a "plus" if ya ask me, as I do not want the brush rotating when I''m using the attachments, or vacuuming a floor with a hard surface.

A wonderful assortment of attachment tools like a TurboBrush Tool (great for cleaning fabric furniture and stairs), Combination Brush, Crevice Tool, and a Telescoping Extension Wand for getting hard to reach places.

BISSELL Healthy Home Upright Bagless Vacuum, 16N5F, is not as eardrum piercingly loud as my Hoover. Actually, the hum of the vacuum is rather pleasant.

Clean-up is a breeze! Just press large button on top of see through dirt canister to release from vacuum, press large button at bottom of canister to open bottom...empty into trash container. tip: pet hair seems to not want to come out easily, but just get out one of those unused chopsticks (most have in kitchen drawer) and gently poke pet hair debris to loosen. When finished, close bottom lid and snap canister back in place. Easy! :)

The three filters are easy to get to for maintenance.

I''ve (recently) reviewed the BISSELL OptiClean Pet Upright Vacuum, Bronze, 30C7T, an excellent machine, imo, if one has shedding Pets! :)

The brush on this vacuum is powerful. My wife was trying it out when she said that the vacuum felt like it was pulling itself across the carpet. The main suction is also very strong. It did a great job cleaning up the carpet and the hardwood floor. It has a nice handle in the front for carrying and a very long cord.

I had a problem with the brushing attachment on the telescoping pole. It uses suction to spin the brush, and it spins up fine but as soon as it contacts anything it stops rendering it useless. Nothing appear to be cracked or missing in the attachment. I think there may be some air escaping out of the telescoping pole. I didn''t have this issue with the brushing attachment for the the BISSELL 58F83 Rewind SmartClean, Blue model.

We liked our old vacuum but we wanted more and what we wanted cost too much. When we saw this vacuum at a reasonable price we figured we''d give it a try. The day it arrived my husband wanted to try it out right away and the next thing I knew, the entire house was vacuumed. Even the wooden floors! This vacuum is so versatile and easy to use.

But wait. How hard are vacuums to use, really? Not much. The truly amazing thing about this vacuum is we have two Siberian huskies and we were using this during "blow out season." If you know nothing about Siberian huskies, trust me when I say that "shedding" is an inadequate description of what they do. If you are familiar with the breed then you know how remarkable it is that even during a blow-out we couldn''t find evidence of fur in our carpet or on the floors.

However, there is one caveat. The Turbo-Brush attachment is great for picking up pet hair, etc., but the place where it''s supposed to click into place for storage on the body of the machine itself is not strong enough to hold it. The minute you turn on the vacuum or roll it around, the vibrations cause the attachment to fall off. I have never actually owned a vacuum that could hold this attachment and when I saw how this one was designed I had a ray of hope because it looked like someone finally got it right. They didn''t.

Other than that, this is a great product and a bargain when compared to the more expensive ones out there making similar HEPA claims. Delighted and highly recommended.

We like the idea of the BISSELL Healthy Home Upright, Bagless Vacuum, with a HEPA filtration system that purifies air while vacuuming, purporting to "trap and seal 99.9% of pollen, pet dander" and other allergens. There are allergy sufferers in our home and we live in a canyon where there always seems to be a lot of stuff blowing around.

We have a lightweight canister vacuum but were looking for something that would deal with the nitty-gritty. After several weeks of use, here''s what we''ve found (PROS and CONS) with the BISSELL Healthy Home.

PROS:

It''s powerful--the 9X cyclonic is great for sucking up spiderwebs (and, in some cases, spiders!) and cleaning dust off screens

It''s not too loud.

It''s easy to assemble out of the box.

It does a nice job on carpeting.

CONS:

It''s quite heavy and difficult to maneuver.

The on-board brush is very hard to remove from its vacuum storage port--and to put back in place.

Did we mention that it''s heavy?

All said, we''ll probably use this one for the occasional hard-to-get-at stuff and use our much-lighter canister for the everyday clean-ups. Unless you live in a bungalow, it''s just too hard to carry up and down the stairs.

After using this vacuum for a little while I find that I would recommend it, indeed I have recommended it, though whether this is the best model for you depends on what you need.

My other recent vacuum experience has been the comparably priced Hoover Windtunnel Max Multi-Cyclonic Bagless Upright Vacuum UH70600 and so I''ll be using that as a comparison, since they both have strengths and weaknesses.

First of all, this Bissell is simply more powerful than the hoover. Yes, if you go by how many "cyclones" the Bissell only has 9 of ''em to the Hoover''s 12. But, apparently not all cyclones are made the same as this Bissell really sucks, and I mean that in the best vacuum way possible. It has more suction than the Hoover and for that reason alone the Bissell takes a lead in the comparison.

But suction isn''t everything. And that is where the Hoover jumps ahead. I find myself really liking the auto-retracting cord of the Hoover. I also like the more solid construction. The Hoover just feels like a higher quality vacuum in the feel of the plastic and how well everything fits together.

Both are very easy to use, and the bagless feature is, of course, extremely handy (thanks Dyson for getting that technology moving forward!). The Hoover also has more reach and more/better attachments. The Bissell has the slightly longer cord, which feels more than the 2'' longer of actual distance. I suspect some of the cord in the Hoover gets left in the auto-retract.

So which do I recommend? If you need flexibility and want a more flexible (and smaller in size) vacuum that just looks and feels better, the Hoover is the way to go. If you''re primarily vacuuming floors and need stronger suction, then the Bissell is a fine choice. Indeed the Bissell is what I recommended my brother buy when he was vacuum shopping.

I''ve been using these in my home for several years now. My wife used to insist on throwing those bleach disk things into the tanks of all our toilets, which caused me to have to replace the flapper valves at least once a year as they got brittle and stiff in the continuous presence of oxidizer in the tank water. I was quite happy when I found this cleaning system at a local store as an alternative. The bleach is added to the water that is sprayed into the standpipe and ends up in the bowl; none of it goes into the tank to ruin the valve, flapper, or other parts.

Installation was very simple. You don''t even have to shut off the water supply. I did six of them in less than an hour altogether. Replacing the cartridges is simple.

I was afraid the cartridges wouldn''t last very long, given the number of users in our house (and a number of them small children who tend to use the toilet more often), but even if our highest-use toilet they seem to last three to four months. On our lower-use toilets, I get the blue ones so I can tell when they''re running out. The high-use ones gets the bleach cartridges and I just replace them every three months or so. Occasionally I get in to replace one and find it still has a fair bit of material left in it; I just leave those for another month or so until it is all gone, or nearly so.

My wife likes these almost as much as I do; she thinks this system works better than the disks you drop in the tank (which makes sense; the cleaner/bleach is concentrated in the bowl where it''s needed, not sitting in the tank where some of it will pass through the bowl but most of it will go right down the drain), so we''re both happy.

I agree with those who believe that this product is superior to the drop in chlorine pucks. Here is how to make it more economical. Use up the cartridge that comes with the cleaner kit, then remove the used cartridge and with a hacksaw blade or serrated similar carefully cut off the top of the cartridge at top of the first line of perforations and using a flat file smooth at the cut line. Then discard the bottom of the used cartridge. You now have a usable cap with a seal. Buy several pounds of 1" chlorine swimming pool stabilized chlorinating tablets. drop three of these into the unit chamber and seal with the cap. Does the same job at a much reduced cost.

I am writing a review of three toilet cleaning systems I''ve bought here on amazon:

Fluidmaster:

Uses a cartridge containing a chlorine based tablet.

Cartridge is not meant to be refilled.

Chlorine odor noticeable in the bathroom.

Cartridge can be modified (I used a dremel) so it is easily refilled.

NeverScrub:

Uses a cartridge containing a chlorine based crystal.

Cartridge is not meant to be refilled.

Chlorine odor noticeable in the bathroom.

Kaboom:

Does not use a cartridge. Bromine tablet refill inserts directly by unscrewing a cap.

No odor noticeable in the bathroom.

All three of these systems work the same way and all are really easy to install. All of them put a toilet cleaning chemical (tablets or crystals) in-line between the water fill valve and the toilet bowl fill pipe. All of them prevent the chemical from getting into the tank water (so there is no damage to the plastic parts in the tank). All sell refills for their systems. All keep the toilet bowl equally clean for about 1-3 months depending on how often it is flushed.

Amazon also sells Pool/Spa Cleaning Chlorine and Bromine tablets, which as far as I can tell do just as good a job keeping the toilets clean as the refills but at a fraction of the cost. I have tried all of the following, each of which provide enough tablets to keep all the toilets in the house clean for 10 years and they are all very cheap:

Kem-Tek 177:

The tablets fit well in the dremel-tool modified Fluidmaster cartridges.

The tablets fit well in the Kaboom.

The bathroom has a slight chlorine odor.

Spa-Kem 267:

The tablets are too large to fit in the Fluidmaster cartridges.

The tablets fit well in the Kaboom.

No odor.

Tropi Clear:

The tablets fit well in the dremel-tool modified Fluidmaster cartridges.

The tablets fit well in the Kaboom.

No odor.

Chlorine and Bromine are fairly equal in cleaning ability. Chlorine has that chlorine odor. Bromine is broken down by sunlight. Which is why, on a sunny day, outdoor pools use chlorine. But at night, or indoors, or on a cloudy day, they use bromine since there is no smell.

Summary. The Fluidmaster system works but the cartridges are expensive. To refill the cartridges easily requires a small modification with a dremel tool. The cartridge is too small for any tablets larger than 1 inch in diameter. The NeverScrub system also works but the cartridges are expensive. What I am using is the Kaboom system with the bromine tablets (either the Tropi Clear or the Spa-Kem 267) as they have no odor and clean just as well as the chlorine tablets.

I was a little concerned about opening up shop away from home, 3 states away, and having to leave my tried and true Krups Pro Aroma behind. Granted, its an 8 year old model, but it made a great cup of coffee, and I had mastered the fairly simple interface for programming and setup.

In my search, I read a LOT of negative reviews about the new Krups product family. Really not a surprise cause even the Pro Aroma had its many quirks, but still.....the coffee. So, after reading a bunch of bad reviews on Braun, Mr Coffee, Cuisinart, and Krups coffeemakers, I figured $60 was worth the risk to plunk down on this model. My first impression when I opened the box was that the coffemaker was solid and well constructed, but that the carafe was too light and thinly formed. But after two weeks of use I really cant find anything to complain about.

Yes, the carafe is very light, but I like it. And it pours well with no drips. I havent yet attempted to program the machine cause thats not a necessity for me, but hit the "ON" button and in about 5 minutes you have a fast, hot, and extraordinarily flavored pot of coffee. And this is honestly the best coffee I''ve ever had from this machine, even much better than my old Pro Aroma from the same manufacturer.

I dont know how Krups does it, and I dont care, this machine is just one of the best on the market today, and probably thee best when we''re talking about the quality of the end result...which is all that matters. 5 beans

Let me start by saying two things:

1. I love coffee. Personally, not counting my wonderful wife and staff at the office, I drink at least two _pots_ of coffee per day. Yes, that is over 120 fluid ounces every day, seven days a week. Needless to say I was pleased with each of the new health benefits announced regarding excess coffee consumption!

2. After researching reasonably priced, reliable coffee makers, we bought two of these Krups FME2-14 units: One to replace our aging Braun, and the other for our daughters'' apartment. This review encompasses experiences from both households.

There are many things to love about this coffeemaker, and a few (3) minor issues. I''ll touch on the issues first: With typical German precision, the water reservoir is designed to hold 60 fluid ounces, or 12 5-ounce cups worth. Not more, but I''m sure it can handle less, being well equipped with a 1-3 cup "small pot" mode. However, if (1) you launch into cleaning it and brewing coffee without really reading the user manual, and (2) you have the tendency to brew the fullest possible pot (as a conspicuous consumer such as myself might), you will quickly discover that the overflow port in the back wall of the water reservoir works exceedingly well. I did. As I wiped up the extra few cups of water rapidly dispensed upon my counter I made the mental note to only fill it with 12 cups henceforth. This is, obviously, a user issue; others who are experienced with pots brewing less than advertised will be pleased to note that 12 cups of water in really translates to 12 cups of coffee out. You do not need to overfill this coffeemaker''s reservoir, but you may have to relearn some behaviors.

The glass carafe, while well made and shaped in handling terms, is thinner walled than previous pots we''ve owned. This has two effects: First, the coffee cools faster when the hot plate turns off. Not that my coffee sits around too long, but if this is a potential issue for you I would buy the insulated carafe model. Second, it does not withstand much rough handling, as indicated by our need to purchase a replacement already for the daughters. One "light bump" in the sink was sufficient. It did make me wonder if the same engineer who designed windshields for the 60s VW Beetle was involved... regardless, don''t whack it or you''ll be picking up the pieces as well as the tab. My wife also adds that the replacement carafe, at over $20, was more costly than expected. Again: Exercise care in handling!

The final issue I have is the engineer''s choice of material for making the feet: Two round plastic knobs (in front) and two square rubberized feet (in back) give the coffeemaker a firm grip on your countertop. Unfortunately too firm if you keep the unit under a close overhang as we do. It does mean you have to lift the unit slightly when moving it in or out, something that''s easier to do when empty than full due to the overflow port mentioned earlier. Again, this is easily fixed with something slippery (like a silicone glide pad) that the machine can rest upon.

And as you can tell, none of these issues are true defects. In every other regard the Krups FME2-14 has been the best under $100.00 coffeemaker I have ever owned. The controls are logical and easy to operate, and it makes great brew. Unlike many inexpensive units, the steam does not readily escape from vents or cracks in the heating chamber or drip basket, so you can place it in a more confined space than others (bearing in mind the rubber feet) and it blends well in a modern kitchen. Most importantly, the product itself the coffee is consistent time after time. Whatever your personal formula for the perfect cuppa you''ll get it here!

I had a Krups purchased in 1999 that lasted 7 years it was the best coffee maker I have ever owned. After it died, I noticed that Krups was not making the same model so I bought a Braun KF510 (which I love and highly recommend).

I bought this Krups as a Christmas gift for my parents, and I was disappointed in the quality. The pot itself feels extremely thin (much thinner than my $35 Braun machine). It did not come with a gold mesh filter (or any filter)and the filter basket does not really fit properly with the machine, so it snags every time you close it.

Another problem is that you cannot turn the pot back on once it turns off: the machine tries to brew all over again, and then turns off after indicating there is no water. So, you must program the coffee pot to stay on longer, and if you want to keep it warm after it turns off, you cannot. I have never seen a coffee pot do this.

Overall, my Braun KF510 machine is sturdier and more well-made than this one. The Krups does make a good-tasting cup of coffee, and my parents seem happy with it. I think a better machine could be purchased for less money. I do not think it is worth the price.

Note: In all of my research while looking for decent coffee makers, Braun and Krups are the best on the market.

When my old roommate moved out with the fancy coffeemaker, I began searching for a replacement. Timer functions, 8+ cup capacity, and ease of use were indispensable features, but I just couldn''t afford a $100 machine. After a few weeks of comparison-shopping, I managed to find this model the only reputable one under $60.

Usage:

I have owned this for 1 year, and I use the machine every day, setting the timer function to brew a 2-cup pot every morning (for which the "1-3 cup" button is helpful). Occasionally I have brewed a full pot for company, and that''s worked fine.

The Good:

Brews well! The coffee may not be scaldingly hot, but it brews hot enough to retain heat in a mug while drinking, and if left in the pot on the hot plate it''s still the perfect drinking temperature 2 hrs later. Also, no strange flavors are imparted on the coffee.

Brews FAST! Seriously, the coffee is ready ten minutes before the toast unless I time things perfectly.

Very easy to clean and maintain the filter.

Very easy to settle pot onto hot plate, ensuring the coffee drips directly into carafe (unlike the comparable Cuisinart I tried, which resulted in dribbling coffee unless placed perfectly).

The Bad:

The carafe IS thin. I was initially very concerned about breaking it, but I have accidentally banged it several times in the sink and no chips yet...

The swing-out basket is a little cheap (well, compared to the $150+ mahcines). Sometimes if it''s not placed perfectly, I have to push it in with a clunking of plastic that doesn''t sound too elegant. But, it functions perfectly, so I don''t mind taking the time to set the basket in properly.

Higher-level programming is not intuitive. You really do need to read the manual for programming the timer, etc, although it''s not complicated, and you''ll remember it after 1 or 2 times.

The steam vent is quite strong, and if tucked away under a cabinet can warp the finish on the underside.

Common Complaints Addressed:

"The water level indicator on the front traps air and is inaccurate." Unfortunately, this is true. However, the gradations on the side of the carafe give me a fairly decent idea of how much water I''m adding, so I don''t feel the need to refer to an additional indicator.

"The machine will turn on automatically if the timer function is set." Well, yes it does. That''s why I just turn off the timer when I''m going out of town or don''t want coffee I drink it often enough that not having to set it every time is actually helpful. Some reviews have expressed concern of this being a fire hazard, but when there is no water the machine will not brew and instead display an error message, so I don''t think this is a danger.

"The machine/no-drip lid dribbles coffee while percolating/pouring." Huh... this has also never happened to me, not even when I brewed the full pot. Occasionally the "pause" mechanism doesn''t engage quickly when the pot is removed, and some coffee dribbles down, but this cleans up very easily afterwards. I have never had the lid leak while pouring a cup, or while the coffee was just sitting and percolating.

Summary:

For ~$60, I am very pleased with the performance of this model. It probably wouldn''t end up on a wedding registry, but for the basic needs of a daily coffee drinker, this is a great bargain. In fact, the only drawback I have encountered from using this coffeemaker is that I find myself drinking far too much coffee because it''s a breeze to make!

After a gazillion (happy) years with the Krups ProAroma, I decided to contemporize. Committed to staying in the Family Krups, I read bundles of FME-2 reviews and dismissed the negative, too-hard-to-program complaints, figuring that it''s a coffee maker -how hard can it be? I ordered the coffee maker, and after devoting waaay too much time to trying to understand the instruction manual, I decided to just eat the money spent and search for a different brand. But after seeing complaints of one sort or another about all brands/models, I decided to baby-step the FME-2 manual ... and now I''ve got it.

The automatic-on part was the trickiest, but it''s not as bad as some reviewers report: if you use the auto-on, let''s say, M-F, just tap the "h/min" just once after the coffee is made on Friday to deactivate the auto-on. Then (still with me?) on Sunday evening after you do the coffee/water thing, tap the "prog" button 3 times (think Kansas if it helps): you do NOT need to reset the time. It will hold the time you have already set, and you''ll see 6:30 AM (or whatever) flash before your eyes as you do it. The little clock icon will light, and you''re good to go.

True, the clock, itself, does not stay lit, and there is something sort of weird about not seeing the friendly glow as you waltz past the kitchen; but there''s always the stove clock, cable box clock, and microwave clock all aglow to reassure you that time is still marching on in the kitchen.

And ... the coffee is great, hot, and as long as the warmer plate is on, so is the ever-so-pretty blue clock (noting "on"). If the handle on the pot holds out (it does not have the "hook over the pot top" feature that we''re all used to), this seems to be yet another Krups success. (I still have to wonder, however, if the designers sat around a table deciding how to complicate the set-up process that had been so sensible on the ProAroma.)

May 2006 addendum: So much for being clever. To reactivate the automatic set time after deactivating it, tap the "prog" button 4 times, not 3: the first tap shows "PROG," the second shows the hour, the third shows the minutes, and the neglected-to-mention fourth completes the reactivation. Sorry about the error. So instead of thinking Kansas, think, um, the Beatles. Or the corners of the world. Or just try to remember it''s 4 taps....

While they are such practical features, you''d be surprised to learn how hard that combo is to find! I came across this one from Crane a big name in plumbing fixtures. As I hadn''t heard of them making humidifiers before, I was leery. You know how it can backfire when you buy something that isn''t a mainstream name or model? That won''t be the case with this machine.

I am totally & pleasantly surprised. It arrived on time, well-packed & was intuitive to get started. It''s SO quiet! The reason that I chose this one over a quite comparable Holmes or Honeywell is because it includes an ionizer a feature that one would normally need to purchase a separate air purifier to have. It also offers BOTH cool & warm mist. While I don''t expect to use the warm mist (cats,) it''s good to know that it''s there. This is by far the QUIETEST humidifier of the six that I have had!

Unless you''re independently wealthy & can afford to run it with distilled water, you will need the optional demineralization filter to avoid the white powder deposit left by hard water. So just go ahead & buy one.

This machine is a real winner in every way. And oh, btw, did I mention that is QUIET????????

This is my third small humidifier and my first ultrasonic one. The other two were evaporation style once using disposable filters and the other using a permanent filter which water was circulated over. The second is in the trash bin, didn''t last two years. The first is a Vornado and works ok but is loud and requires replacing the filters every year.

Now onto the Crane. Based on the great reviews I read about the Crane humidifiers, I was looking for the drop shape one, but could not find it anywhere locally. My local Frys had this one so I picked it up. It humidifies really well, there are three settings, the highest pumps a lot of moisture in the air. So much so that it will dampen the carpet and other objects around if the fan in the room is not on. I usually keep it on low or the second setting and keep the ceiling fan on low. I also like the adjustable nozzle on the top. It has two rotating sections that can be aimed independently, so you can aim it in two directions. The warm mist feature is not necessary steam, it warms the water prior to misting it. You can feel the warmth a few inches over the nozzle, but it''s cool after that. I usually use the warm feature and the ionizer all the time.

What I don''t care much for is the tank design. It must be flipped over to fill and there is no handle or any easy way to old it while flipped. Also, the handle on the top is not centered, so when holding the full tank it tilts forward a bit. When setting back in the unit, you need to level the tank before it will slide completely in. it''s not the biggest deal, just a minor annoyance.

I''m also not a big fan of the buttons on the front. They are completely flat and sense the heat from your finger. If your hands are cold or damp from just handling the tank, sometimes the buttons don''t register a press. Since they are completely flat, I can''t find the buttons by feel while trying to make adjustments in the dark. The display is also way too bright at night, I have a piece of index card taped up to cover it.

Overall I like the humidifier and does a wonderful job of humidifying, but the design could be improved a bit.

The Pros are:

Quite good humidity output that allows you to control how fast you change the humidity in your room. Also has timer so you can have it shut off after several hours, which is good if you don''t want it running all day or night.

The humidity level can be changed from 40% up to 60%. Mine seems pretty accurate, as I compared against a digital humidistat about 10 feet away and they typically run within 5% after you allow a couple of hours (I''m using it in a 500 sq ft. room).

The antimicrobial plastic polymer does seem to slow down the amount of bacteria that grows, so if the machine is cleaned once/week, it should be fine. It''s easy to clean

We fill it with water that was filtered by a good under the counter water filter, so not much white powder, even on the TV.

The Cons are:

Remembering to remove the nozzle prior to removing the tank to fill it. It usually goes flying somewhere on the floor.

It''s pretty quiet, but mine has an annoying high pitch hum from the ultrasonic transducer. It''s OK if you have the TV on or some other sound. I think to sleep with, it may not work for you. I can''t sleep with it on.

The tank is kind of a pain to fill since the handle is designed pretty poorly and is not centered so you will need two hands to handle it for sure.

As for reliability, ours is only about 2 months old, so far so good.

This entire unit seems very fragile, and this fact is probably demonstrated best by the manufacturer''s repeated instructions in the manual of "DO NOT carry Water Tank by handle when it is filled with water." Why? Presumably because the handle is so weak and fragile that it will break off. Yes, it''s THAT flimsy.

The primary reason, though, why this unit is essentially unusable is that the humidity sensor on this one I''ve received is faulty. When I plugged it in, it stated that the "present" room humidity is "40%," and once during a 5-hour run, it registered "41%." However, at the time I started it running, my HygroSet Digital Hygrometer w/ Calibrating Kit, recently calibrated, read that the actual, in-room relative humidity was 34%. Hygrometers on humidifiers are notoriously inaccurate, so I simply assumed that this one on the Crane Ee-8064 read slightly high. I was wrong....

After 5 hours of running at the highest setting, the tank was nearly emptied, and my personal hygrometer read that the RH had risen to 53%. However, the readout on the humidifier itself still read 40%. Completely dysfunctional.

If you want a unit to run wide-open in a room to get it humidified quickly, this might be a fair choice, but, based on this experience, I don''t trust this unit''s sensor. It''s not one I''d trust to leave on overnight or to let run if I were to leave the room, for it can''t possibly self-regulate if the sensor can''t detect a 19-point change in relative humidity. I''d pass on this one.

First I had to send it back to Crane to get the chiming sound mechanism removed because every time we used our tv remote (not even in the same room) it would make the unit chime! lol NOT good for a sleeping 10 month old! But that was fixable and had to ship it back and received back 2 weeks later. Then I set it all up in her room again and went in the room in the middle of the night when she woke up and omg... the smell was HORRIBLE!!! I contacted Crane and they said that was normal for a new unit... all I needed to do was clean out the base and water tank with a vinegar solution and that should do the trick. I did that... 3 times and still no luck. I''m sorry but I do not want to use the cool mist setting... I bought this because of the warm mist option and I expect there not to be a smell. She told me that it was because I was using in a small room with door shut and I advised her I was actually running it in our living room which is pretty large (we live in a 1200 sq ft apt) and the smell was still there. I ran it for a week in our living room hoping the smell would go away and no! My fiancée and everyone who comes over can not stand the smell... I would not recommend this product. I will be returning and ordering an Aeroswiss (this is what we use for our bedroom and is amazing!). Such a hassle.

I got this pitcher filter on a closeout special for less than 6 bucks...the pitcher alone is almost worth that and seeing as the filters are around 5 bucks each I got a good deal on this.

The other reviewers are correct, it takes a few fills of the filtering chamber to fill the whole thing, but this keeps the overall size smaller, which I like. Having to fill the filter chamber a few times is a small problem in life...it only takes a couple minutes.

What makes me mad is the refill counter/timer device in the lid. They tell you to change the filter after 40 gallons or every two months but the counter is only set up for calendar month and day and the days are only every second or third day so you cant even use it for a regular counter...like 1 thru whatever if you wanted to count the fills.

Brita cleverly doesn''t tell you how many fills equals 40 gallons...because they would rather you replace the filter every two months even if you haven''t filtered 40 gallons. This is a blatant attempt to trick and take advantage of the consumer in my opinion.

So since Brita wont do the math for you, I will. This is a 6-cup unit pitcher. There are 16 cups in a gallon, 40 gallons is 640 cups, divided by 6 cups per pitcher fill equals about 106 pitcher fills per filter. So, I would keep a notepad on the fridge and just make a note each time you fill...as you get closer to 106 fills, pay attention to the taste of the water and change the filter based on the number of fills or the taste of the water.

These companies make their money on the filters, which is fine. But they should be clearer to the consumer how many times/fills the unit should effectively filter.

I have had Brita filter pitchers for years...they are fantastic products, I can''t live with out them. But who ever designed this one obviously never used the older models, this model has 1/2 the filtering capacity as the size of the pitcher. i.e. you can only fill the top half to 1/2 the space of the entire pitcher, how dumb is that! The older models allowed for significantly more. So to fill the pitcher completely you have to fill this pitcher once, then wait for it to filter, then fill it again to get it full...DUMB and a waste of time....

Also the pouring flap, (never their on older models) built up mold after a month as it is in constant contact with water. Chicago water must be really bad but come on mold after one month. This product looks sleek and thats kind of why we bought it but its a poor, poor cousin of the fantastic older models.....DO NOT BUY THIS MODEL buy the older version...you''ll be alot happier in the long run...

I''ve owned and used both this model (Bella) and the Slim, so I''ll be comparing the Bella to the Slim.

For those that don''t know, the Slim is the basic, no-nonsense Brita pitcher. It does exactly it''s built to do, with no major flaws (like leaking) or extras. The pre-filtered and filtered areas are both ample in volume.

So onto the Bella:

Pros:

flap to cover the spout and protect the water (only major con with the Slim)

date dial (instead of a sticker system on the Slim)

Cons:

very small pre-filter volume (meaning frequent refilling to fill up the pitcher)

major design flaw can and will leak unfiltered water into the filtered area (occurs at the dip where you press down to open the lid)

wide base takes up a lot of room in fridge (especially vs the Slim)

And this isn''t really a con, but the soft grip handle is like a spoiler on a sedan it''s a non-functional gimmick and adds nothing of value. Oh and the product description is wrong on Amazon, this has a manual date dial, not an electronic one.

Summary:

Unless you''re really messy in your fridge and you''re afraid you might drop things in a pitcher with an open spout, go with the Brita Slim. It''s cheaper, works better, takes less space, and has more room for pre-filtered water (ie. less frequent refilling).

We ended up sending it back for a checkup and after a week komplett told us we will receive a new one instead. So we went to pick it up and when we brought it home, opened the box and took it out, the back cover was slightly bent, which is not very noticeable at the first sight and one of the hooks, that holds the main filter was completely broken and just fell out once we''ve opened the back cover. After we plugged it in to see if it works, it just slightly lighted up but did not work whatsoever.

We are very disappointed, it is our third try with Viktor Air Purifier and the quality of it is just unacceptable for amount of money it actually costs. We had to go back to the store once again and this time we returned it, without exchange. It has been a very bad experience overall and we are very disappointed.

I have sent this message to Stadler representative first in U.S. and then I was re-directed to an international sales manager names Samuel Wyss. He has been one of the worst sales reps I have ever dealt with. After numerous emails back and forth trying to resolve the issues we had with Viktor Purifier, the customer service aspect was just horrible. We have been fed an idea that someone will contact us with further information but no one ever did, even after I persistently tried to contact Samuel Wyss, nothing happened. So from overall experience this has been a very long, unsatisfying, time consuming, stressful and just a horrible experience. Never again will we buy or recommend to buy any of the Stadler products, first because it does not live up to the standards/quality and the price, and second, very importantly is for the most unacceptably bad customer service.

Cuisinart SS-700 Single Serve Brewing System Save 54% Off

As many others here, I have evolved from a Keurig system. So for those thinking about buying a Keurig, please fully read all the reviews you can. If it wasnt for me being the only coffee drinker in the house, I wouldnt require a single cup brewing system. So for those looking into buying Keurig brewing system, consider the Cuisinart. It is licensed to be manufactured by Keurig, bu appears to be much better quality. I had my first Keurig go out with within 6 months. Then my second stopped functioning properly after less than 45-days. Same issue as another review, the Keurig Platinum began brewing small, random sized amounts of coffee and would also get confused on how much to brew and when to stop. Found out once it was returned to the store, the unit was recalled (for defective water pumps). Which also meant ALL the stores in town were ALL sold out...as they were all returned to the vendor.

Now, my buddy convinced me to get the Cuisinart. I have owned many Cuisinart kitchen utensils, but never anything electric. So I was skeptical to say the least. But at the same time I had to replace my last 2 Keurigs. So why not.

Now, 2 months later, a whole lot of coffee (125 servings +) and it is working great! I can only hope that Cuisinart has a more reliable vendor for there water pumps than Keurig. As that seems to be the big issue with all Keurig machines.

The Good:

-Power Switch is on the side of the machine (compared to the back of the machine on Keurigs)

-Water Tank Size

-Replaceable Charcoal Water filter

-FREE, reusable Keurig coffee filter

-Reliable (so far)....what a concept

The Bad:

-"Low Water Level" flashing blue LEDs are annoying. Its a clear water tank, I can see its low/empty

-Bottom catch/drip tray doesnt stay in place very well

-If you place a K-Cup inside the unit before its "Ready" (see above in The Good), it will not recognize the K-Cup once it is ready to brew. So you must lift and close the access lid one more time to allow it to brew. Not very time saving.

-"Hot Water" button will dispense a full cup of hot water; so if your machine is used primarily for coffee, you will have random loose chunks of old coffee grounds floating around in your cup of hot water since its inevitable to NOT get coffee grounds on the unit.

-Parts are not necessarily dishwasher safe. So I suggest hand washing periodically.

I will try to remember to give a 6-month review on the quality.

08/01/2010 (175+ K-Cups)

Sadly, this follow-up is not what I had hoped. But, maybe it needs to be de-scaled/cleaned? Anyway, here is the new "problem"....(tsk tsk tsk)

The Setup: The machine, after brewing a cup will "prime" the system by sucking in what I would consider about 1/2 of the water necessary to brew a cup into the system itself. I would think this is done to heat the water inside the system, so the water temperature stays at a more consistent/constant temperature. This makes sense considering the machine has pre-set water temp setting and it must be quite difficult to keep the water exiting the system at a constant temperature.

The Fail: After brewing only one cup, the system triggers the prime function and sucks in how ever many ounces it needs. But, it doesnt suck in any water. The machine makes all the appropriate noises, but the water level inside the tank stays the same and it wont stop! This function normally takes about 3-5 seconds to complete. 10+ seconds later, it still has not achieved anything (poor little water pump)! That will be the number one killer of a water pump is dry-cycling. Argh!!!

So the solution so far is to shut off the unit, turn it back on and viola! It works! Now every time the unit does not have enough water inside, it will always prime itself by pumping in the appropriate amount of water. So this causes the water pump to work 2-3x more than most coffee pots. Maybe its over working the pump?

*Clean/De-Scale the unit: This is recommended every month or so. I have chosen NOT to do it since I use bottled (distilled) water 100% of the time along with the little charcoal filter that comes with it. I dont want to go waste 3 bottles of water cleaning out a system that should be perfectly clean anyway! I would assume the clean/de-scale is meant for people who have good tasting tap water (which we do not have in Las Vegas).

Maybe the charcoal filter is "clogged" and not allowing water to seep through as quickly? Who knows...

Ill update if anything else goes wrong!

Problem continues as posted above. I have de-scaled the system, but it didn''t help. The entire system was perfectly clean and de-scaling did not dislodge anything. Ive come to now realize this isn''t really a problem as much as it is an inconvenience. You must cycle the system off/on to make it work. I let it sit a few night ago for about 3 minutes, and it never remedied itself. =0(

11/27/10 (Unit #2)

Finally had to replace it! The machine has gradually become slower, noisier and overall horribly inefficient. The machine would take forever to heat up, multiple attempts to suck water into the machine from the reservoir and then began dispensing water back into the reservoir and not brewing coffee. Last 5 days before the machine was finally returned for a new unit, brewing coffee was painful and time consuming. Took 3-4 cycles to brew a single 12oz cup. Got it replaced and got a new one last night. Amazingly, this machine really got worn out fast. The new one its a whole lot quieter, faster and some simple things like the on/off switch works a lot easier and other issues.

03/05/2011 (Unit #3)

The water pump again took a crap on me. The unit and pump had once again slowly gotten noisier and slower. This time (the past few weeks) the unit took about 10 seconds of wait time to simply begin brewing. Just as a reminder. I am the only person using the unit. The unit runs about 1.15 servings a day on average. Pretty crappy reliability. But...more "free" coffee and a new Keurig "Make Your Own" filter. Im up to 3 now!

This unit replaces a Keurig mini that I now us for travel. It makes a flavorful, hot cup of coffee. I have been a Keurig fan for three years. I purchased this machine in Feb. 2010 from BB&B. Like other readers, I have had a few pump problems when there seemed to be an air lock in the pump and water would not flow into the heating chamber. The instruction booklet tells you to turn it off and unplug the unit, then restart. I have found that when I refill the water tank I just need to make sure it is properly seated and tap it to make sure the water is getting into the hose that pumps it into the heating chamber. I also use the hot water feature the first "brew" after refilling the tank to make sure the pump is pulling water. (The easiest solution to the pump "problem" is to not take the water chamber off of the base and just refill it with a pitcher as needed.) I did some online research and found that this pump problem was suppose to have been fixed since I purchased my machine. I might have returned this machine for the newer "fixed" model if the BB&B where I purchased it had not closed. I love the coffee from this machine and have had no further pump issues since employing the solutions noted above.

About me... I am an embedded systems design engineer and know about control systems and such.

Food processing products should only use parts ( components ) in the water / control systems internal to the coffee maker that are "fit for purpose" as designed to be use with WATER.. as a coffee maker uses water.

I have opened several of my failed Keurig and Cusinart K cup machines and found that they are using an AUTOMOTIVE Market Pneumatic Solenoid Valve made in China.. part number SH-V0829...Google this number if you want to check and see this. It is designed for auto seat cushon inflation and has a built in LEAK RATE of 1CC/Min at 4 PSI for air compresser unloading used in seat cushon inflation systems. It is NOT WATER PROOF and DRIPS inside the coffee makers in the transformer and the air pump near the bottom getting the electric motor wet and make it smoke.. My coffee maker was way too young to smoke .. hahha just a joke..

The folk that make this coffee maker IN CHINA think most folk are too stupid to find out about their use of cheep and unfit for purpose components inside their coffee maker. I have attached a DOOR and Hinge on the back of one of my coffee makers that I keep repaired personally.. and buy the replacement control solenoids on ebay to keep my coffee maker working.... THIS SUCKS..... I was ripped off...

I did not pay for a rusty solenoid that leaks water inside my $250.00 coffee machine. When I call Keurig... they do talk some but avoid the topic of this solenoid.. just reading a standard reply statement... When I talk to Cuisinart.. they have nothing to say but want my $10 for shipping a replacement unit... also with the same defective solenoid inside of the same type and part number...

I want to like my coffee maker.... but I do not like being treated like a fool ...

My old Mr Coffee has very nice insides... good design.. and lasted a long time... I am wanting to see Mr Coffee make a K cup that I would like... Cuisinart and Keurig are only about making money .. and not delivering INTERNAL quality of their product with this machine.. They come from the SAME China factory...and they are made using non water proof no O ring air only pneumatic solenoid valves... The part numbers are on the side of the solenoid if you care to open up your machine and look... Do not have it plugged in if you do.. safety first..

I hope you like having RUSTY water in your hot water for making tea and coffee.... the solenoid does rust internally as it is only for air usage...not made for water exposure...

I have photos and also plan to use this experince in a control system class I teach at a University as an example of poor ethics in business manufacturing...

I need not say how MAD I am over this discovery .....and the lack of interest from the folks that make this product..

I have been using a Keurig Platinum Machine for about a year now and had to replace it 2 times. These are the exact replacement filters for my Watts Pemier Water Filter. Even though I am on City water, these filters make a marked improvement in taste quality. The City''s filters do not catch all the sediment and do add chlorine, however these filters remove that and I end up with very good drinking water. I had an older Watts 2 stage water filter system previously and was not impress with the design. The filters were large and cumbersome. When changing filters every half year it always result in a big mess. The O-ring always seat incorrectly the first time and cause it to leak. I had to fuss with it couple of times to get it right.

I purchase this Watts 5 stage filtration system to replace the old one and I am very satisfied with the new design. It is easy to change and replace. You do not even have to shut off the main water supply to change the filters. It is compact under the sink and it make a noticeable taste difference in the drinking water. But be aware this filter does not filter out biological pathogens, if you need that you have to look at different filter system.

Received the wrong filter set from Amazon. This was the first time I was changing the filters so fortunately I recognized the colors were different (as the filter size was the same and would have fit) I received the filters for the reverse osmosis machine Watts Premier 531105 (ASIN: B002YOQ0C2) and not the UF-3 Ultra. Pack was actually labeled wrong with a sticker on the outside of the clear plastic wrap. Was able to return it, just make sure you check carefully (and match product numbers) before installing.

Heard good things about the regular Watts water filter, so I decided to move up and get the one with the alarm. Unfortunately, the first unit I received had a small hole at the base of the spout, and a small stream of water sprayed out all over. I returned it and got a new one from Amazon 2 days later that so far, works fine. Could taste the difference in the water once installed (which was so easy I could figure it out without the instructions), and quite satisfied so far. Won''t be able to report on how that alarm works for a while, but it starts at 4000, and turns off when using regular tap water and on again when using the filtered water.

Included were the diverting valve, filter wrench and batteries, but only came with one faucet adapter that worked with an outside thread and not for an inside thread. I called the company since Amazon doesn''t provide parts and was told an adapter with an inside thread is not included for this model. Therefore I went to Lowe''s and picked up an faucet adapter that worked for $2, so no big deal. However, I do feel I really shouldn''t have to pay for a part that should be included in every water filter you connect directly to the faucet (might have rated it a 5 if not for that).

This product is sold by Amazon itself. When I tried to contact the seller (Amazon) through my account there was no option to do so. Only option available was to return the whole product. I am really surprised at the lack of responsibility and professionalism.

In my case the product''s sink connector which allows the flow of water to go to the filter or to divert to the faucet never worked automatically (returning to its default = non filtered water, once the water was shut) rather we have to do it manually. The package also came lacking the manual for the digital counter/alarm (if there is one at all), the included manual only explained how to set the filter and connect the hose to the faucet no mention on how to use the buttons or warranty.

Other than that it works fine, but I would still want Amazon to replace the faulty part. If someone has an idea how to contact them please let me know.

Ordered this for my GeneralAire Humidifier on my heating system. The product comes in a sealed plastic pouch, because the wicking material is coated with a compound to help the material hold and distribute water over the surface of the metallic wick. Open the pouch over a garbage can or your sink, as some of the powdery coating comes loose in shipping, and it is a little messy. Pre-rinse this item in cool tap water before installation into the humidifier housing. It will also be important to remove this item at the end of the heating/humidifying season, and clean up the wick tray and surrounding surfaces of the interior of the humidifier housing with a wet sponge. The coating compound breaks down after the heating season and can end up fouling your return air ducts if you do not remove it promptly. This is a procedure I have developed via trial and error over the last 6 years.

Rainbow E2 Series Vacuum. Brand New in a Box

There are things about this vacuum that I LOVE and HATE! It is heavy but luckily I have a single story home so no upstairs. The suction is GREAT! You are going to read other reviews about this vacuum not filtering well. To me, that''s the best thing about this vacuum. The filtration is excellent if you use the machine properly! I read others saying that you have a mess to dump out at the end and have to go outside or dump it down the toilet with a strainer etc. I don''t have any of these problems because I change the water FREQUENTLY and just dump it down the sink when it looks like dirty mop water.

When I first got the Rainbow, I had to change it about 5 times vacuuming my 1400 sq ft house with wall to wall carpet, now I can vacuum the whole house on one fill of water without having to change the water so often. If you continue vacuuming with a basin full of "MUD", this is when you are going to run into problems like water has to be taken outside and dumped because it''s too thick to dump down the sink or in toilet, the dirt that you''re vacuuming up will bounce right off the mud, go into the hepa filter or back out into the air (if your model doesn''t have a hepa). It is an added inconvenience to stop and dump the water down the sink every 10 min''s or so, but hey, you can dump it down the sink and don''t have this pot of mud to deal with, put fresh clean water in and continue vacuuming. I know there is controversy regarding water capturing dirt. I say water does capture the dirt and very well! If it didn''t, I would have a NASTY hepa filter after three years and the thing is still snow white on BOTH sides. I''ve never seen any other vacuum cleaner''s hepa filter stay clean that long. No, you can''t vacuum non wettable dirt like talc powder or fireplace ashes or drywall dust (those materials are not wettable) and will go straight onto the hepa, but most household dirt doesn''t contain these materials. Drywall dust is TERRIBLE for ANY VACUUM!!

The machine still smells fantastic! I''ve taken care of it though. It also works as a blower. I cleaned the refridge coils and the design of the coils were such that they couldn''t be reached even with the smallest attachment. So I turned the hose around to the blow and placed the Rainbow so that when I blew the dust out, the Rainbow intake would capture it. It worked! It also has an air cleaner though I''m not completely sold on the low speed air cleaning feature. It doesn''t seem to move much air. I also am not crazy about the power nozzle. It looks nice but something about the way it''s designed seems to choke off some of the airflow. I think there are a couple of better power nozzles on the market that will fit the Rainbow that are much better, though this one still works decently, just not overly impressed by it. There is an optional 14 foot wet/dry hose you can purchase and this thing is WONDERFUL. I have high ceilings and I can get on a step ladder in my house and get way up on the kitchen cabinets, ceiling fans, and any other high areas that collect dust while the rainbow sits on the floor. You can''t do this with the standard six foot wet/dry hose that comes with it. The wands are stainless steel and will not rust inside. You can buy essential oil scented and put a couple of drops in it and it smells AWESOME while cleaning. Even though you''re changing the water often these bottles of scented oil last FOREVER it seems. You can also put these drops of oil in a regular vacuum bag but it just doesn''t smell as good to me. Something about the dust in the bag mixing with the smell of the oil isn''t the greatest.

Conclusion: Would I pay 1700 dollars for this vacuum brand new? NO! Do I recommend this vacuum? YES!!! If you think you are the type of person that can deal with the extra maintenance, then I say get on refurbished from a REPUTABLE vacuum shop ONLINE or LOCALLY for much less money! I wouldn''t buy one from someone "just selling" their Rainbow because if that''s the case, it hasn''t been cleaned and refurbished. There are even vacuum shops on the internet that recondition Rainbows with original Rexair parts. Other vacuums may work good and are more convenient, but there''s no other clean like using this machine if used properly.

My main problem with the Rainbow is how it it sold. You have to let the salesperson into your home and they have that darn referral program. But with all that it can do, you really need a presentation. We bought our Rainbow on the spot and have never regretted that decision. We have 2 big, shedding dogs. I have bought the most privey Hoovers and Bissels but none would get rid of that dog smell or fur. The Rainbow purifies the air (also deodorises) as it vacuums. Powerful suction allows you to clean fans, blinds etc. effortlessly. We also have the carpet and floor cleaner. Although more cumbersome than an upright, it does a better job than others that I have tried even the commercial Rug Doctors. This machine is not for people looking for ease of use. But if you want deep down cleaning, nothing else compares. Tip: when emptying out the canister, sift it so that only the dirty water goes into the toilet. Dump the rest of the clumped dirt and hair into a trash can. We bought our whole system for $1800 and it is still doing a wonderful job. You can also use the Rainbow to blow inflatable pools up and as a small wetvac.

I''ve owned a Rainbow E Series vacuum for the last 12 years. Vacuumed dirt gets trapped in the water basin and it''s true there is no dust of any kind that comes out of the exhaust. I''ve always felt suction was ok because it would pick up anything off hard floors and there would always be carpet filth after vacuuming the carpet.

A friend of mine recently bought a Dyson DC07 Absolute so I borrowed it to compare to my Rainbow.

NO COMPARISON!

The Dyson suction was so tremendous I had to empty the canister 9 times just from vacuuming the carpet! I couldn''t believe the amount of filth the Dyson pulled out and the Rainbow was leaving behind.

I will say the Dyson suction may be a little too powerful. If you have older carpet, like I do, it tends to rip out carpet that may have been hanging on by a thread.

The Rainbow is easier to clean up. I pour the canister contents down the storm drain and hose out the inside. The Dyson has fine dust clinging to the inside of the canister. This had to be dusted off over the trash can. I''m very allergic to dust so I had to make sure not to kick up any dust when cleaning. I found using a Swiffer Duster did the job well.

The Dyson as constructed can not reach under furniture less than 9 inches above the floor without using hose attachments. The Rainbow''s reach was about 4 inches.

I paid $1200 new for my Rainbow and the Dyson sells around $600. Overall I think the Dyson is a much better value and would replace my Rainbow for a Dyson.

Allergies: I bought a new Rainbow in 1985 (a D4C, I believe) because I developed a dust allergy after quitting smoking that made it impossible to use a regular vacuum (I would be extremely nauseous and have a wicked headache for 2-4 hours afterwards if I tried). At first, I hired someone to clean and left the house for several hours to avoid breathing the fine dust particles that were inevitably airborne from the regular vacuum cleaner''s exhaust). When I heard about the Rainbow, I thought it was worth a try.

Suction: The suction demonstration was impressive I had just vacuumed, but a surprising amount of dirt was removed from my carpet. In the years since, my oriental rugs and (earlier) carpets were all cleaned well, as were my hardwood floors, and cat hairs are gone. If it isn''t cleaning well, something is wrong. Some have mentioned other vacuums with more suction power this one has plenty, and doesn''t tear up your carpets.

Oriental rugs: The tassels can get caught in the power nozzle (carpet attachment), which will stall the attachment and require you to open the bottom (screws hold it), then put the rubber ring back on the "carpet beater", because it invariably flips off when it gets stalled tedious process. Eventually, you get used to going over tassles quickly or avoiding them with the power brush altogether (just using the floor contraption).

Air: The air in the house is noticeably cleaner visually and smells fresh instead of dusty. In addition, the fact that it has lasted 25 years (and I''m hard on such things), with only a cracked water basin, makes this ultimately more affordable. Fragrances can be just a few drops of essential oils of your choice.

Steamer: I also bought the carpet steamer, which attaches to the kitchen sink faucet. I haven''t used this much it''s not as deep of a cleaning as the heavy machines that can be rented, but it''s much easier and lighter to use.

HEPA filters vs. waterl: The best thing abut Rainbows is that they are the only vacuums that I can use without feeling sick. I''ve tried vacuums with HEPA filters, but they still release dust into the air (mine is an older Rainbow that doesn''t have a HEPA filter, but it''s not really needed the water precipitates the dust).

Some issues that others have raised:

It''s heavy true; this didn''t bother me much for a long time, but I''m now in my late 60''s with lots of arthritis, and I don''t take it upstairs often because of this (I would if it were a little lighter). Swiffers help keep this area clean. However, the complaints about it being heavy to carry around on one story puzzle me if you have it on the dolly (an essential accessory), you just roll it around, only lifting if you have noticeably different heights from room to room. The water basin itself isn''t heavy with water in it it''s only about one quart full.

It''s cumbersome to store true I converted the bottom of a tall cabinet into a storage place. It wouldn''t be as cumbersome if you didn''t have the carpet beater, but if you have carpets or rugs, you will want this. You can and should get an attachment caddy, which holds four attachments. The water basin sits on top of the vacuum.

It''s messy to clean out the basin in some respects, it is gratifying and/or horrifying to see all of the dirt and hair in the basin it gives you a pretty clear idea of how clean your place was! I always scoop out the scoopable stuff (mats of cat hair, for example), and put it in the garbage, then toss the dirty water either outside or in the toilet, rinsing it a time or two. The flower pot solution was a good one, though. Of course you can''t leave this dirty water sitting in the basin, unless you want to grow something ugly in your spare time (you can''t leave coffee or tea, either without it getting moldy). It IS a little cumbersome to clean, but so is changing a vacuum bag or cleaning out a bagless vacuum, and both of these typically get dust in your face.

It''s expensive yes, it is however, I can''t recall what I spent, but if it was $1500, this amounts to only $60/year over the 25 years I have owned this (I don''t sell Rainbows, either). Used ones are much more reasonable.

Overall, it has been well worth it, but try using it to see if any of these objections are strong ones for you for me, the lack of dust in the air makes it worth the $$$.

Update: The weight was getting to me (you lift it to put the "screener" for dirt on, then onto the water basin, and I have area rugs and open floor, so there I lift there as well)

and so were the Dyson ads, so I bought the DC24 animal (the smaller, lightweight one, good for animal hair), hoping to have a compact vacuum that I could easily bring upstairs and that would store more easily. Dyson''s suction was impressive, but the air was noticeably dusty afterward (which made it hard for me to breathe). My dust allergy is still a problem, even with the Dyson''s HEPA filter so I had to bring out the Rainbow to clear it. I decided that my objections were minor compared to the value of clean air, so I''m cheerfully back to using the Rainbow.

Pros:

-When you use a conventional vacuum cleaner, you see dust blown all over especially if you look with the sun rays streaming through your window. You see a much big difference using this vac. One of our sons have bad allergies and this helps a lot.

-You not only see the difference, you also feel that you are breathing much cleaner air.

-No expensive bags to buy

Cons:

-It is heavy as a bulldozer. Imagine hauling it up and down the stairs. This is the reason we use this vac not as often as our regular vac. My wife has to call me to help tugging it along.

-Price too much! We got it half price, but probably we still paid too much.

-Maneuverability. Annoying and it really needs some muscle to work with it.

-You also need to clean the vacuum every single time you use it. No, you cannot wait until the bag is full there is no bag. It has a canister that you fill halfway with water and if you do not clean after each use, it grows bacteria and smells like a dead skunk. Believe me, we have done that.

-It is a hassle to use. Need assembly every time you use it.
