BUNN NHBB Velocity Brew 10-Cup Home Coffee Brewer Save 22% Off

BUNN NHBB Velocity Brew 10-Cup Home Coffee Brewer, BlackBunn Coffee Makers are very high quality coffee makers, and one typically needs to spend money to get this kind of quality. However, there are a few costs you should be aware of before you purchase a Bunn Coffee Maker. I''m not saying that it may not be worth it to you, but you may as well know all of the costs before purchasing.

They both have to do with how Bunn delivers such a fast pot 3 minutes as opposed to 4-8 minutes of other makers. The first way they do it is to have what amounts to two sets of water tanks: one you fill, and the other is preheated. The preheated water tank is delivered to the spray head, and because it is preheated, it doesn''t require any time to heat it up. The problem is that it is preheated 24/7, and that can be costly. I''m guessing they use a 40 watt heater. If it takes 8-12 cents per day in energy costs, you are looking at $20-$40 per year. You can, after you are done brewing for the day, shut off the "vacation switch" which is the switch to the tank heater, and this will save the cost and energy, but if you forget to turn it back on at least 15 minutes ahead of when you need it, you are looking at a 15 minute wait for the tank to reheat before you can brew. You can also use a timer to limit the time of day the unit stays preheated, but that''s an additional cost and timers use energy to run all day.

Furthermore, if you are having guests, if you brew a pot of caffinated, followed by a pot of decaf, you may need to wait 15 minutes between pots. The Bunn commercial brewers keep three preheated tanks, so this isn''t a problem for them. But the consumer models keep only one tank preheated.

Note that they work on gravity: the water you put in pushes the preheated water out. Some of the preheated water will evaporate, so you have to put in more water than you want out.

The second thing they do to get a fast brew is to increase the amount of water that pours in to the filter basket, far greater than other coffee makers. The amount of water would collapse other filters, but because these filters are taller and sturdier, they stand up. But that means you are stuck with their filters, which, if you don''t have a supply nearby, and few stores carry them, means paying for the filters plus shipping.

Bunn builds coffee makers to last, unlike other coffee makers that will wear out after a year or two. Virtually all programmable models seem to only last a year or two. So by buying this brand, you''ll save money on coffee makers, to partly make up for the extra energy and filter costs.

You''ll have to decide whether the extra energy and filter costs (which can be dealt with, but might be troublesome) are worth saving the cost of buying a new machine every couple of years.

Next, the carbon footprint of a machine that consistently wastes energy is somewhat (but not all) counterbalanced by the fact that it is made in America , and does not require shipping halfway around the world like some of the better brands (UPDATE: it WAS made in America, now it''s made in China, so this benefit does not apply). Additionally, these coffee makers will easily outlast 5x other coffee makers, and that''s a lot of plastic you save buy buying something only once.

Finally, the quality of coffee from a flat bottom filter is generally not as high as that you can get from a cone filter, though the differences will be subtle, and if you are used to the flavor of a flat bottom filter, then you may never care. This brand is considered the best of the flat bottom makers, so there may not be as much of a difference as there are for other brands.

As for the heated base keeping your coffee hot, it is also *ruining* the flavor from almost the very first minute. Any real coffee geek will immediately take the pot off the heater and pour it into a thermal carafe or thermos or will order a model with a thermal carafe to start with. Ideally, there is no heated base at all. So people complaining that it doesn''t keep the coffee hot should invest in a thermal carafe or buy a model that comes with one.

In summary, the design of these coffee makers is suited to the standard donut shop, where they are brewing coffee around the clock and it is worth it to them to keep extra tanks of water heated so that they can shave 1-3 minutes off the brew time during their peak buying periods. Whether it is worth it for a consumer who makes one or two pots of coffee in the morning to do something like this is something only you can answer for yourself. They are very good coffee makers: well built and they make good coffee. But they cost a lot in terms of energy and filters, though partly balanced by the reduction in number of coffee makers you''ll buy over the life of this product and the local nature of the product that reduces the energy required to ship them. It''s one thing to have a high cost, but to have the high energy waste these coffee makers will generate for most consumers is something everyone should think about.

Finally, what did I buy instead? I settled on the Frieling USA C104943 Cilio Porcelain No. 4 Coffee Filter Holder. I bought the #4 size and use a #4 filter (though you can use a smaller filter for whatever size you buy) and make 16 ounces of coffee right into a Thermos Stainless King SK1005MB4 16-Ounce Leak-Proof Travel Mug, Midnight Blue. Cheap, simple to use, lightweight (less energy used to ship than an electric coffee maker), lasts forever, cleans in five seconds, no plastic chemicals in my coffee and wastes zero energy when not in use.

It was that time again; time to search for our next coffee maker. Being tired of replacing the coffee maker every 6 months we set out to look closer at build quality and read more reviews this time. We purchased three other coffee makers by a company that''s been around forever, Mr. Something. Nice looking, fancy green LED dial display with a timer, 12 cups, programmable, 2 hour auto shut off etc. for around $40-$50. Those machines only lasted around 6-7 months.

I always wanted a Bunn but was hesitant spending $100+ for a coffee maker again. Actually, I don''t recall seeing a BUNN for around $100 the last time I shopped. It''s not that spending $100+ was something new for me; I purchased other machines over $100 before but was also disappointed.

This coffee maker purchasing was beginning to be a regular thing for us so the line of thought was purchase a cheap one and replace it. So that is what we did but its costly doing that too. Buy a new machine in Jan. then June then again around Christmas time, that''s $150 right there! I remember thinking the last time; we should buy two so when it breaks we have a backup.

So anyway, we have the BUNN NHBX. The experience setting this machine up was unlike any other coffee machine in the past. I actually had to follow directions, 5 simple steps but IMPORTANT STEPS. It''s not like you just plug this machine in and go, 3 minutes later drink coffee. It does require some initial setup, approximately 20-30 minutes from opening the box. Bunn includes a quick setup guide in addition to a nice manual and a deliming tool. Adding 3 pots of water to the machine seemed odd at first not fully understanding the hot water reservoir design.

This machine makes the best tasting pot of coffee of all the machines I owned in the past. It''s also the hottest pot! The warmer plate seems unnecessary. This machine made coffee as quick as 2 min 35 secs up to 3 mins.

We just bought this Bunn coffee maker to replace one that had been in use for almost fifteen years. We average two pots of coffee per day. Prorate $100 over 15 years. Not real expensive per year. Our old Bunn failed because I didn''t use common sense when handling it. I picked up the unit by the upper plastic portion of the coffee maker when moving it for cleaning, etc. With the water in the reservoir there''s too much weight to pick it up that way. This broke some of the internal joints and caused leaking. Be smarter than me...pick it up by the base or vertical center section when its full of water. That''s the main thing I wanted to say to those owning this coffee maker.

The other reviewers have stated all the great features of Bunn coffee makers, so I won''t detail them again. This is our third Bunn and I wouldn''t consider anything else. Well.....to be honest, I was tempted to buy a Bunn commercial coffee maker like the VP17-1. Good luck.

I was very happy to see that Bunn offered a home device with a warming tank. I knew that from the office coffeemakers they produced that it should be a good with reliable features. I bought our first Bunn NHBX Home Coffee Maker at Lowes. It performed well for a while. A few months later, the power button at the top let go while brewing and the coffee grounds started flowing out of the filter compartment. I cleaned up the mess and examined the unit. The underside of the water dispenser had cracked into two parts and the filter would no longer stay up with any weight in the basket. Thinking it was a problem with the amount of coffee we ground, I decided to start over with another unit. WRONG. It also did the same thing after 5 months. The stainless steel coating started coming out from around the back of the water tank, too. It joined its predecessor in the trash. I decided to forego the 3 minute coffee and purchase a pro-line coffeemaker that really was suitable for office and home.

I have had 3, yes 3 coffee makers in the past 2 years. A mill and brew, a Krupps, some other quite nice machines. Every time I would go to my parents house I was amazed by how good the coffee tasted out of that plain, 7 year old, simplistic looking Bunn my parents owned. I tried the same coffee grinds, filters and all on mine, taste was awful in comparison. Through my powers of deduction (I know, I know, call me Captian Obvious) I determined it was the coffee machine rather than the ingredients that was the culprit. I ordered the Bunn NHBX-B as it has more contemporary styling and was pleased to see despite the face lift the taste has not changed one bit. Delicious. And all in 3 minutes time. I will never purchase another coffee machine, see you later Starbucks drive-through.

NewCell Genesis 7 Plate Water Ionizer / Alkaline Water Machine Save 17% Off

NewCell Genesis 7 Plate Water Ionizer / Alkaline Water MachineI waited three months to give a review on this Water Ionizer / Alkaline Water Machine. It works a lot like a family member''s Tyent Rettin MMP-7070 Turbo (that they had to replaced after 3 weeks) but this NewCell 7 Plate is significantly less in cost and warrantee. Filters (that I don''t need yet) cost less also. I don''t pay much attention to the PH # and those things but no question I have now seen the machine "Greatly Reduce Two Life Long Problems" for a close family member that I wanted to help. They had stopped taking prevacid type pills, to test the thing, and they have not needed one pill since! Someone also has had a "life long" back problem reduced 90%. I love giving our water to others and most of them see a big difference. With others it is like; "you can lead them to water but you can''t make them drink" (Ha). That in it''s self settles it for me. So I order two rounds of spare filters and wrote this review after they arrived. It looks like this machine came with additional hardware for under the sink I guess. The machine did come with poor documentation, so I relayed on the family member''s Tyent info and much later I found a website that gave some information (). My unit has many buttons including 4 different steps alkaline and one acid (for cleaning), runs fast and right now I (and others) are on alkaline step 3. We all hope my machine will last a long time.

I have had this now for 7 months and it works great. I put it on the side of my cabinet next to the sink and it works great there. I have it supplied from a reverse osmosis filter to feed it and to give people just normal drinking water if they don''t want to try the IONIZED water. My wife has diabetes and has noticed that her blood suger has been much better since drinking this. This is a great product.

Ok to begin with I have a BS in Medical Biotechnology, an AS in Biotechnology and I have taken a year of chemistry courses as well as organic chemistry. These "ionized water" systems are a scam! Honestly these companies are trying to rip you off!! I have put quite a bit of time into researching this information and some of the websites selling these products and they are all making bogus claims. First of all there is no need to drink alkaline water at all! And in addition, there is no such thing as a body ph. Everything in your body has a different ph from your gastrointestinal system, to your blood, to your tissues etc. If you still aren''t sure please look at this article written by a former tenured chemistry professor. He has made the most understandable comprehensive blog about this topic that I could find online. Please read with an open mind and I hope you will learn the truth about these scams!

Breville 800ESXL Commercial 15-Bar Triple-Priming Die-Cast Espresso Machine Save 11% Off

Breville 800ESXL Commercial 15-Bar Triple-Priming Die-Cast Espresso MachineThe Breville 800 ESXL is turning out to be one of the best buys I have ever madeBreville 800ESXL Commercial 15-Bar Triple-Priming Die-Cast Espresso Machine.

I had a Gaggia that produced great espresso when I first got it, but recently, it stopped creating any crema whatsoever. Water leaked from the steamer wand and the expresso head. It was time for a replacement.

I studied and studied and studied all the expresso makers and I knew I did not want to spend over $500 for a good pot. My goal was to find a great pot for under that amount. I read every review there is on the internet concerning the Breville 800 ESXL. People love it or hate it but if you read carefully, you may find as I did, that many of those who hate it, did not follow the directions as prescribed by Breville. They treated it like their old pot, however, the Breville 800 is a wonderful pot if used according to the instructions put out by Breville. And dare I say, that some of the others who did not like the pot sounded like coffee snobs who want perfection and had no right buying this machine and judging by standards that only a much more expensive machine could match.

If you want a truly outstanding expresso or cappuccino, the Breville 800 will do it for you, as long as you live up to your part of the bargain. The first thing you need are really good beans and fresh filtered water. Next is to really learn how to make expresso. You need to find the right grind and then stick with it. I have a Capresso Burr Grinder that works great for only $85. You need to learn the right amount of pressure to tamp the coffee (also, it does not hurt purchase a good metal tampthe one they give you is only okay). You should get a thermometer to make sure your frothed milk is between 140 160 degrees and then learn how to froth milk. The cups should be warm and you will have some great coffee.

you may not get great coffee the first time out--and maybe not the second, but the more you do it, critique what you did, and make adjustments, you will find that the difference between and excellent cup and a good cup has more to do with you than the machine. This is a hands-on machine (which I love about it). Like a cook using fresh ingredients, the results often lie in the art of the cook. It is the same with this machine. If you just want to turn it on and get a great cup of espresso, it may happen sometimes, but not always. It is up to you to make your shot the best. There is a learning curve to be sure, but the end result is fantastic and for a great price. I was making great shot after great shot in about three days.

I was scared to death about my filters clogging as others have said, but I have found that the best thing you can do is to clean after every shot. it is not a big job to wipe down the nozzle, rinse out the pots and filters, and take the little tool they give you to keep the filters open and poke the hole once to keep it open for the next time. Takes all of a minutemaybe less. The result, great expresso, perfect crema, great frothed milk (once you acquire the knack of rothing), and a beautiful, sturdy machine that should last a long time with the kind of care I ask you to give it.

Some have complained about the temperature of the coffee. I too thought it was not hot enough the first few times I made the espresso, and then I read the manual. When you do what the manual says, the coffee is plenty hot --too hot actually. As for the time it takes to steam the milk, no longer than my Gaggia with a lot less mess. And about the "sloppy mess in the portafilter" and no dry puck ---well, I would like a dry puck too, but the paper from Breville in the box tells you that the technology they use to get the coffee hot and with perfect crema will not give you the traditional dry puck. Expect it to be watery in the portafilter. just rinse it out when done and you are in business. I accept that and as a result I get great coffee. My machine is not a Rencilio, nor a Gaggia. It is a Breville and it does not have the dry puck--but it does have great espresso that can be made within a minute or two of turning on the machine. And clean up takes less time than it did to heat up (under a minute).

It has a large well for water which is easy to fill, from the front and the back. it is very very easy to clean. It is sturdy and it looks great. There are so many cool things built in --obviously thought went into the design. Some complain about it being loud. I have never met an espresso maker that is not loud. Oh yes, I saw one once but that machine cost $2,000 and was fully automatic. There was no joy in making an expresso with that---no art to it. The machine does it all.

Now, for the weaknesses. I already told you to get another tamp. The one they give is not the greatest. Also, it has the very cool feature where it purges itself after each shot or steaming allowing the built up steam to flow to the overflow reservoir. (Actually this is a positive feature) but on the negative side it uses more water, but no big deal unless you are paying for bottled water. With my Gaggia, I was always afraid it was going to blow up on me. This steam pressure release is very cool and well thought out.

Needless to say, I am very happy with this machine. As you may be able to see, I am the kind of person who looks at what I have done and tries to make the next one better. For me, this machine does not disappoint.

Hopefully, this review has helped.

From a interface and asthetic point of view, the machine is flawless. It''s beautiful and solid, and has many nice touches like an integral storage bin and swiveling steam wand. Having said that, it''s missing a few things on the INSIDE that you''d expect from a $400 machine:

For one, it uses a thermoblock. This results in a pressure drop and uneven heating compared to a boiler, which is why there is the need for the double-wall crema system. (I''m referring here to pump machines with boilers, not the cheap steam machines.) This is why you''ll find that after brewing you have a soupy sludge instead of the hard dry puck considered an indicator of proper espresso brewing. Update: as pointed out by somebody else, this may be more a function of the lack of three-way valve than indicative of poor pressure or heating. I didn''t realize this didn''t have a three-way valve, but that''s just one more reason to avoid this. Regardless, the weakness of the thermoblock is apparent in the difference in quality between a single shot and a double shot. The latter is harsh and bitter, which I assume is because the last part of the shot isn''t properly extracted due to a drop in temperature.

Second, the filters and group head aren''t made of brass like you''ll see in machines of similar price. Brass has a high thermal conductivity and mass, which helps keep the water hot on the way to the grounds, at least when the machine is properly preheated.

Personally, I''m not sure I have a sophisticated enough palette to discern a difference between espresso from this and a machine with better parts. But given that you''re considering spending $400 on an espresso machine, I assume you might be a purist and somebody who cares about getting the best for your money. I also feel the need to offset some of the other breathless reviews by people who clearly haven''t bothered to do even a minimal amount of research on espresso machines.

Despite the above, the machine produces good espresso, as far as I can tell, and it IS beautiful. My guess is that it overcomes some of its component shortcomings with nice engineering (such as the auto-purge feature to avoid scalding the grounds). However, you have to wonder if you''re really getting your money''s worth where it counts, when there are machines out there at half the price with better internal components and plumbing. You should be able to find machines with more stable temperature and higher effective pressure for much less money if you''re willing to go for substance over looks.

Reviewing Breville 800ESXL Espresso Maker

Points to make

(1) UNPLUG the machine every time, like it says in the manual! Why?

The first day I had the machine I assumed that once you turn the machine off in the front panel, it is really off.

Not so, apparently.

One lonely evening, while making love to my machine (just kidding eh!), anyway, quite near the turned off machine in a quiet evening, I could hear a very low humming sound coming from it.

Power unit or whatever, I realized the machine was not really off, and from then on I decided to follow the recommendation in the manual -which I presumed initially was only for home-safety reasons.

Obviously is not sucking the 1500 watts, but there''s still something going on inside, and it''s not a caffeinated gerbil!

(2) Vibration and Noise

IMO, it''s not noisier than other espresso makers, and it sure is a dead loser against my blender, which my neighbors are probably acquainted with.

As for vibration, I did the same as I did with my Breville coffee grinder: I placed the machine firmly on a towel folded to the appropriate thickness. That not only dampens the vibration but will soak up any water spilled in an accident.

The tank might vibrate off its place and onto the drip area? Yes, it might.

The first time it happened, it was almost funny to watch.

Because I saw many other good points in the machine and this was a minor mechanical problem asking for a mechanical solution I did the obvious: I used the original tape that came with the packaging to hold the tank in place. Using on one side is enough. I use a tank of water every two days, so no big deal. (Yes, the thing uses a lot of water, even more so if you include the after-espresso cleaning procedures)

(3) Grind.

One of the reasons I considered the Breville 800ESXL it''s because I have for some time their coffee grinder, which was an excellent choice for a burr grinder under $100 which looks nice and is a solid workhorse.

Before I bought the grinder I read reviews saying that the finest grind was not fine enough (for the reviewer, for some reason).

But now I see that, at least for me, the mid-notch in the Turkish selection in the Breville grinder has been ideal. Enough pressure, good timing and extraction, good crema, and NO clogging so far.

Rule of thumb, or fingers: if it feels like sand, it''s too thick; if it feels powdery and like flour it''s too fine; if it just stains the fingers without clumping or adhering to them, it''s closer to the ideal.

(4) A routine (mine :-) becomes effortless and natural for people who like preparing coffee. (If you dislike rituals, trial and errors, and want push-button coffee this machine is not for you)

Before

Give the machine some latitude. If you know that you''ll use it in ten minutes, turn it on right now. If you turn the machine on and start brewing immediately after the red light goes out, you risk not getting your coffee or hot water hot enough.

After the machine is ready (red light out), run a 10-second blank shot (holder and filter in place but no coffee), and collect the water in the coffee cup you will use. This first run warms up the filter assembly and the collected water will warm up the cup while you fill and tamp the filter with the ground coffee. When ready, dump the water and put the empty cup under the filter and start the real thing.

After

After cleaning and washing the filter assembly and filter of all wet coffee grounds, run again a 10 seconds blank shot with clear water to fine-clean the filter and avoid eventual clogging. (Do the same with the steamer in a cup filled with clean water).

It''s a good idea also to lightly clean the underside of the filter holder (the fixed part in the machine from which water drips) with a wet paper towel or cloth before running the final cleaning blank shot.

(5) Steamer. Not the greatest feature in the machine, but works just fine when you practice enough. Don''t worry, the loud high-pitched sound is NOT a feature of this or any machine :-): move the pitcher, depth and angle until it stops, and the right soft sound will guide you. And go for the micro foam, not the macro foam bubbles. You will see the difference right away and it''s easy to learn to get it right. And follow the usual advice: low-fat or free-fat refrigerator-cold milk preferred.

(6) Cleaning the steamer.

As always, the drier the milk, the more difficult to clean. (So, don''t take a couple of hours enjoying your coffee, and only then come back for the cleaning!)

Soon after use, "steam" for some seconds a container with clean water. Remove the sleeve and drop it in any container with clean (or soapy) water. Wet-wipe the full extension of the nozzle clean, making sure there''s no milk crusting or remains. By following these procedures, it''s very unlikely that you are going to have any problem with the steamer or hot water.

(7) Pods.

I didn''t care much about pods, had never used them, and it was and remained completely out of my purchasing decision. Like most real coffee lovers I don''t consider pods seriously in the tradition of coffee-brewing.

But, as I''m curious about everything, and finding that my local Starbucks had a nice-looking box of 12 dark espresso pods for $4.95, why not, let''s see how this thing works.

And it did, beautifully.

My surprise is that, right in my first try, the machine performed beautifully. Quick and with no mess (and ground coffee is always messy as we all know), it came out with perfect color, crema, temperature. And it tasted at least better than the espresso you get at the Starbucks counter!

And the great thing is that Starbucks has the decaf version of the same pods. Great if I feel like having an espresso after dinner!

That does not mean of course that I will start using pods regularly. But, besides having the convenience of the decaf option for a (rare) quick late night fix, I can see the use of a pod as convenient when you wake up in a foul mood not prone to any coffee-loving rituals or patience, or you just don''t have time.

The fact is that it''s there, it''s an option, and it works.

(8) One last note about cleaning.

If you like drinking and preparing coffee, but don''t like or don''t have time to clean things and keep them clean, you have a problem.

The importance of cleaning in a machine like this cannot be overstressed. Coffee and milk are both troublemakers. Milk dries fast and adheres in layers to surfaces, corners and clogs orifices very quickly. And coffee has oils that stain and adhere to surfaces. It''s not that it looks ugly after a while, but it starts to interfere with the flavor of the coffee.

So, the attitude to follow is to make the cleaning, maintenance and keeping the hardware in prime condition, part of the process and ritual of making and enjoying coffee.

This machine is indeed beautiful, and I find the espresso very good indeed. The problem is that if your coffee is ground too fine, even once, the filter clogs. Due to the design of the crema filter, there is an inaccessible "interior" between the coffee-side filter holes and the bottom-side single exit hole. If this gets too clogged, there is really nothing to do except get a new filter, as the clog is not reachable with any tool.

This wouldn''t be too bad if you could actually GET filter baskets when you need them. The only online company that carried them seems to be out of business now. And without a filter basket, this is just so much pretty scupture.

UPDATE: You can get the filters from Breville USA, for a price. You can also use a backflush detergent (like JoeGlo) to clear them, although it''s a bit time-consuming and messy.

Want Breville 800ESXL Commercial 15-Bar Triple-Priming Die-Cast Espresso Machine Discount?

After 3 weeks of "so-so" espresso''s and cappuccino''s, I was ready to return the 800ESXL. The espresso produced was not hot enough, and the frothed milk not even close to the dense foam I had hoped for. But I gave it one more try using the below techniques, and the results were night and day.

Pre-Heat the machine, then run water thru the portafilter for at least 10 seconds. By doing this, the water temp went from 140 to 174 degrees. OK, so this is recommended in the instructions...but who really reads them?

Using the Breville Conical Burr Grinder, I found the "click" setting two clicks down from Espresso (towards Turkish) worked best. (Great grinder, producing perfectly even grinds every time. Highly recommended!)

Practice your tamping technique. I bought a "Terry''s Tamper" which is much easier to use than the supplied Breville tamper/scoop. Tamping pressure is the greatest variable between success and failure. At least it was for me.

To improve frothing, I tried covering the top hole on the stainless steel frothing attachment with tape and it worked to perfection. I could not get the desired "micro-foam" before making this modification. I have since used a tiny screw to close up the top hole. This really made a difference in the density of the foam, using both non-fat and 2% milk.

Keep your frothing pitcher in the freezer, and use very cold milk.

As other reviewers have suggested, after brewing your espresso and dumping the puck, run another 5 to 10 second shot of water thru the portafilter to purge it out. I have yet to have the filter clog up.

Filtrete 4US-MAXS-S01 High Performance Drinking Water System, Single Stage, 1-Kit
  • Maximum Filtration
  • Includes 6 Month Filter
  • Filters up to 750-Gallon/0.75-GPM flow rate
  • Quick Change filter replacement

I bought this because I was getting a new kitchen faucet and the new one was a pull down sprayer. I could no longer use my Pur filter that attached to the faucet directly. I for the life of me tried to find a difference between this one and this model, Filtrete 4US-MAXL-S01, that Amazon also sells. The only thing I could find was a difference in the physical size of the filter. However, both said they were rated for 6 months. This one used a smaller filter so it would take up less space and the filter replacements were a little cheaper too. Not to mention the bigger one cost about $15-$20 more at the time. I bought this one and the one thing I didn''t like was the faucet piece was all chrome. Everything else on the sink was a stainless looks so I went a got a few cans of spray paint and taped the parts I didn''t want to get paint on and sprayed a few layers over a few days. I was really happy with the look afterwards. The install was pretty easy and the instructions were easy to follow. My only complaint was the T adapter that is included. It is plastic and I would have really liked to have it made of metal. I had no issue connecting it to the shutoff value or the tubing to the filter. Connecting the supply line to my kitchen faucet was the issue. I had a hard time getting it tight enough to not have a very slow leak. I eventually go it, but think metal would have been better and easier. I''m sure cost is the reason for no metal though. Also the screws provided for the bracket to mount the filter seemed to strip easily. I got them fairly tight, but would use different screws if I ever had to move it. Other than those 2 complaints the installation was as good as could be expected. I did have a little difficulty getting it lined up just right over the old sprayer hole in the sink. The hole for the sprayer and this were almost identical it seemed. A slightly wider base piece would have made that a little easier on installation. Overall I am happy with the looks and performance of it. I have been using it for about a week and a half and it has worked great!

Shop-Vac 5861600 16-Gallon 6.5-Peak HP Quiet Deluxe Wet/Dry Vacuum
  • Accessories Included: 8-Foot x 2 1/2-Inch Hose, (2) 2 1/2-Inch Extension Wands, 8-Inch Utility Nozzle, 14-Inch Floor Nozzle w/Brush, Crevice Tool, Tool Holder, Cartridge Filter
  • 3 Year Warranty
  • 18-Foot Power Cord
  • Rear Blower Port
  • Extra Large Tank Drain

I purchased this vacuum because a 6.5 HP motor seems to be as big as you can get without jumping into the industrial line of vacuums. I wanted a big motor for a reasonable price.

Warranty It also has a 3 year warranty, which of course I hope I do not need to use.

Assembly It is easy to put together...about 10-15 minutes. I only needed a flathead screwdriver to mount the wheels.

Blower -The vacuum has a blower feature which you enable by plugging the hose into the exhaust port.

Drain It has a drain for emptying the vacuum after wet pickup. Useful when 16 gallons of liquid is too much to lift.

Noise I can''t tell if this vacuum is "super quiet" as advertised. It seems as loud as any vacuum I have owned. Probably some room for improvement. Without a decibel rating... it all seems relative.

Sucking power this vacuum is powerful. No complaints.

Included Tools everything is plastic and 2 1/2 inches in diameter. The crevice tool is larger than you might think. I think they could have included a round brush tool for the price.

Tool Carriage mounts easily to the back of the vacuum. It is of marginal value. Bad for extension pipes and hoses, good for the crevice tools and gulper tool.

Weight This vacuum weighs 20+ pounds which makes it heavy to many people. There is a handle on top of the unit which you can use to carry it.

Extensibility shop vac makes some additional products such as a gutter leaf blower attachment, a dust collection system, and drywall sanding screen/collection system all of which give this product some growth potential.

Filters This one uses the round cartridge as shown but can also accomodate bags for drywall dust or fine dust. I like the one piece design as opposed to the sponge, o-ring, filter design used in other models.

Cord 18 ft. cord is nice.

Areas for improvement add some extra tools (brush head and/or small crevice tool), give a 5 year warranty, reduce the noise further, add a crush proof hose, add a tote bag for the tools as opposed to the on board carrier.

I bought this so I could do light shop duty, but mostly to use instead of my dyson for car cleaning. The dyson is really hard to use to clean cars with it''s ridged short hose.

I was worried it wouldnt provide as much suction power as the dyson, but it seems to keep up fine for the car application. I purchased a car set Snap-on 93078 Car Cleaning Kit to assist with the cleaning. I am now able to get in between the seat and behind the pedals where I couldn''t before, and it is much more comfortable to use to clean.

The vac is easy to tote around on the wheels that come with it, and its fairly light. The suction power works great and can clean anything I put in front of it (NOTE: I havent used it on any liquid yet). Other people have complained about the big airvent in the back, but I think it is a nice addition. I use it to blow off computer stuff instead of using canned air and it works great. I have only used it outside so I havent noticed it blowing dirt everywhere.

I wish it came with a few more attachments, but the general purpose ones that come with it seem to work fine. The cord is a bit short, but its easy enough to add an extension cord to so you dont always have to have a super long cord.

I would recommend this vac for anyone looking for light duty shop and car cleaning.

I''ve used this for cleaning out my basement (lots of dry stuff). I''ve used this for cleaning out the pool where my water fountain sits and it does a nice job. What I wish I had was an attachment to the drain so I could just let the water run through the vac and out a hose into the alley. As it is, I have to stop after it fills, take off the top, remove the vac hose, roll it down a sidewalk and out to the alley and then dump it. I''ve searched on-line for a drain hose, but can''t find one. If anyone can direct me to someone who sells these things, would be much appreciated.

Just got one of these because the wal mart specials just didnt do it. The 2 1/2 inch wide hose will pick up just about anything, and this thing can really clean. It would be nice to have a few more attachments.

Coleman Camping Coffee Maker Save 18% Off

Coleman Camping Coffee MakerI recently purchased this coffee maker for car camping/mountain biking trips around Wisconsin. I always wished I could have coffee on the mornings that I woke up at the campsite. Percolators do not work well (in my experience) so I had basically given up until I saw one of these at a sporting goods store. I did some review checking online and all I read was good reviews on this particular model (apparently some of the earlier models had some minor issues). It really does work great! I have been using it on my old 2-burner coleman camp stove (coleman fuel) that my dad gave me (it''s probably 30 years old). Contrary to what some people have said about it taking a long time to brew, some saying as much as 45 minutes, it took me about 10 minutes to brew a pot of coffee with cold water. I just cranked up the flame to high and it only took a couple mintutes for the water to heat up enough to start making it''s way up to the basket and start dripping into the pot. Makes coffee as good as your standard countertop-style coffee maker (slightly larger, maybe, because of the larger base) and practically works the same way. If you want coffee at the campsite I cannot imagine anything better than this.

The first two times I tried to use it the coffee did not drip through the filter into the carafe. I finally realized that its "pause and serve lever" is not well designed. At least with my device, when the filter basket is opened and then closed, the "pause and serve" lever does not always line up with the the trap door under the filter basket. So even when the carafe was in place, the trap door was not opening to let the coffee through. Once I figured that out, it worked quite well.

This coffee maker will make you feel you are home. I use it with a two burner propane stove and after finding the spot where the carafe should sit (the handle must align with two dots market in the surface) is like brewing with a regular coffee maker. Furthermore I did buy it on sale 50% off regular price, at $22.00, I couldn''t get a percolator that good. This coffee maker will be perfect for a family camping, not so for backwood camping when you don''t need bulky stuff, and won''t have to worry of breaking the carafe.

I am a boy scout leader and I camp from 20-30 nights per year. The troop purchased one of these and used it daily for several weekend campouts and week-long summer camp, for a total of about 10 days with an average of 3-4 coffee drinkers. We drink about 2 pots a day (not each).

Durability:

The pot broke right away. We purchased a steel pot.

Plastic around the filter area seems to be brittle...it cracked and a piece broke off.

Cleaning:

The filter basket needs to be easily removable for cleanup. You have to carry the whole unit to your water source to rinse it out. You can take it out, but it requires a multi-tool to do so.

Quality of brew:

Good cup of coffee; just like your drip pot at home.

Speed:

For three consecutive mornings, we conducted a side-by-side field test with an old-fashioned steel percolator pot. Both the Coleman product and the perculator pot had the same amounts of water. Both the Coleman and percolator were lit on the same stove at the same time with the same burner setting. The percolator pot was brought to a boil and perc''ed for 8 minutes. Bottom line, the Coleman product took twice as long to make a pot of coffee.

Overall:

A percolator pot is a better option for camp settings. The Coleman stove drip pot takes longer, is not that durable and takes up more space than an old-fashioned steel percolator pot. Also, the hot surface area (burn potential) is greater for the Coleman product, as the entire bottom section gets hot, as you might expect.

Want Coleman Camping Coffee Maker Discount?

It''s simple...we need coffee while camping especially in the cold mornings. I''ve tried a bunch of different devices to make real brewed coffee (percolators, presses, I even designed and built one that ended up costing twice what this maker costs), but this is simply the best I''ve ever seen. It works just like your maker at home, but instead of plugging it in you put it on a camp stove. It''s perhaps a LITTLE slower than a plug-in maker. But it makes a perfect pot every time. One thing I did notice is that after 2 days of near-constant coffee-making, the bottom metal surface got pretty charred and even bubbled. I think I had my camp stove on too high and it began melting the metal a little (I probably figured that higher heat would mean faster coffee, but I don''t really think that is the case anyway). For how expensive camping gadgets usually are, I was blown away by how great this item was for the price. I would have expected to see this for at least twice what it cost. A must-have in my opinion.

AirTamer® Ultra High Efficiency Air Purifier Save 14% Off

AirTamer® Ultra High Efficiency Air Purifier w/Ultra High Performance Pleated FilterThis machine is well designed. Easy to use. I would say maybe a bit louder than some of the others on the market; however if you look closely some of the others don''t cover pets. Yes, pets. I noticed that a lot of them would filter cat dander. Also, I wanted something that would address specifically mold. This does the trick. I can tell the house is cleaner and have had guest comment that the house doesn''t smell like musty dog anymore (though I didn''t know it did).

As I said, it''s well designed with many things in mind. I''m rather keen on the fact that the lights on the device has 16 different light settings. I turned off the lights since I''m very light sensitive.

There is also the option to use other filters and not be tied into buying their filers only. Great savings in filers and energy.

What I was looking for: consumer report friendly, somewhat portable/sleek design, dog dander, mold, and energy. (dont'' forget the energy cost it can be way more than the filter cost)

Great buy! Considering buying another one for the bedroom.

You don''t want to use ionizer or ozone producing machine. Please read EPA official statements based on scientific studies. Ozone can cause shortness of breath or may have long term effect on your lungs.

Yes, this machine is using 16 x 20 x 2 pleated filter with a high rated MERV 16 that is good for a year. MERV 11 is being considered the best while MERV 8 is the standard for both residential and commercial, so MERV 16 is superior as ultra allergen. In addition, it included another layer of antibacterial black filter(there were 3 included in the package) against virus and molds, in case you need it on top of the ultra allergen white filter.

My furnace is currently using 3M 16 x 20 x 1 filter with 1000 MPR equivalent to MERV11. So this one is an extra purifier to consider the people coming in and out the door.

The original MERV 16 filter is expensive at $80 to buy a replacement after a year. But the advantage of this machine is I can use an alternative filter (furnace filter) of the same size. I have found 16 x 20 x 2 pleated filter at Amazon with MERV 11 by Midwest for $54 with 6 filters in the pack.

The lowest speed at 1 is quite. The design is very simple which is practically just about to enclose the size of the filter. The electrical plug is 100-240 volts so it can be used in any country but the advantage is the low wattage of electricity.

The system came with a european plug! I called the customer service line and the rep. was very polite said he would get a correct tail out to me ASAP. Some mistake on the factory/shipping end. Had it set up quick and running. ONE hour later after leaving it in a closed room the scent of the room was gone and the air just felt cleaner. My son said after a week that he no longer woke up with stuffy sinuses and thanked me for getting it!! (he is 5!) I have one in my room and now I''m considering one for the livingroom too! Do the research, I did and this is a winner!! I did add the carbon antimicrobial filter that is used on the A710 to the included filter for the A600. Worth the added cost!! You can see the evidence on the filter that it is working!

I hate to disagree with the other two reviews; however, after spending upwards of $40 for a power plunger from QVC I stumbled upon this and it is terrific for my problem. I love it and have recommended it to several friends. It does work at about 1/5 the cost of the pricer models.

This plunger may very well work on some model toilets, but it doesn''t work at all on the models I tried it on (a Briggs Vacuity, a Gerber, 2 models of American Standard, and a Kohler). The toilet hole is either too large for the plunger, or it isn''t perfectly round to match the plunger shape. Consequently, the plunger generates no suction. Even if it had worked, it looked and felt like it cost no more that two dollars. Really cheap. Didn''t seem right to return such an item, so I threw it out.

Flavia J10NBK Fusion Drinks Station

Flavia J10NBK Fusion Drinks Station, BlackI won''t attempt to compare this machine to the other brands out there, but I CAN attest to the fact that Flavia is darn good coffee.

My office has the great big Flavia machine that automatically disposes of the used packs, and is plumbed for water. Right beside that machine we have a coffee maker that is only brewed with Starbucks. For the past three years, the Flavia machine is ALWAYS more popular. It''s just fun to use also.

For anyone considering the middle of the line SB100 machine, keep in mind that it does NOT handle multiple-pack brews. That means no creamy toppings.

This machine comes with the Drinks Medley for $20 extra. I couldn''t find the contents of that Medley anywhere, so here it is:

2xHouse Blend

2xHouse Blend (Decaf)

2xColumbia (my personal favorite)

2xSumatra

2xRoasted Safari Nut

2xFrench Vanilla

2xHazelnut (Decaf)

2xEspresso Roast

2xChoco

6xCreamy Topping

2xEnglish Breakfast Tea

2xGreen Tea

2xRasberry Spark

2xLemon Calm

2xExotic Chai

2xCaramel Syrup (very thin, sugary syrup)

2xVanilla Syrup (very thin, sugary syrup)

2xChoco Sprinkles (very tiny pack)

2xCinamon Sprinkles (very tiny pack)

You also get a Travel Mug (a standard-issue tall mug with no handles. Slider on top is not spring loaded. You could pick one up at the store for about $7).

So, you get 34 brew packs worth about 45 cents each, plus the syrups and sprinkles (about $2 more), and the travel mug (worth about $7). That''s about a $24 value for $20. The Medley is definitely NOT worth the normal price of $30.

The Flavia does have one BIG downside (hence 4 stars) there are very few places that carry the brew packs. Worse, most of the on-line stores can only sell to certain states per their agreement with Flavia. So, you may very well be forced to buy your refills from Flavia.net. A ''rail'' of 20 coffee or tea packs runs about $8.50-9.50. The creamy topping is 25 cents a pack. Add shipping and tax, and that creamy cappuccino with sprinkles costs over a buck for a 7oz cup. The going rate at E-bay is 40 cents a pack before shipping. Once Amazon starts selling Flavia coffees, this machine will get 5 stars.

UPDATE:

I''ve made about a dozen cups of coffee with this machine. The adjustable height of the dispenser is really handy; if you lower till it touches the rim of your cup, there will be no splashing. You really should dab a paper towel underneath the dispenser after you use it (especially if you just used creamy topping or choco). I can see how the machine can get yucky if you don''t do this. The machine IS surprisingly noisy, but only for about 15 seconds per cup. Flavia makes great brew packs they do not leak when you remove the used ones. Of course, if you squeeze a used coffee pack, it will leak.

The medley kit comes with a travel cup, yet the cup is too tall for the machine as pictured. You need to remove the overflow tray to make it fit. The travel cup holds 14 ounces (two brew packs worth) comfortably.

If you are going to be buying disposable cups for this machine, I recommend getting 8 ounce and possibly 16 ounce cups. This way, you can keep the volume setting on the machine at 7 ounces, using one or two coffee packs, respectively. If you use your own coffee cups, you''re going to have to constantly be changing the volume setting for different cups. We bought cheap styrofoam cups from our local warehouse store and keep a stack (with lids) nearby.

I almost bought a Tassimo, but glad I read the reviews, which is what caused me to look into this unit instead. I read all it''s reviews and couldnt find anyone who had a bad experience with it. ONE NOTE...... the TRAVEL MUG that comes included in the MEADLY PACK DOES FIT. You have to read the instruction manual which most people dont. It specifically says on PAGE 9, and I quote " THE DRIP TRAY CAN ALSO BE REMOVED TO ACCOMMODATE YOUR TRAVEL MUG". Reading ALL of the isntruction booklet is highly recommended.

Anyway, the best part of this machine is that it accepts any size mug or cup by way of it''s sliding head adjustment. It slides down covering your container opening, so there is absolutely no splash out as the beverage is dispensed directly into your container.

I love the removable water reservoir, which will holds 32 oz of water...or about (6) 7oz cups of your favorite brew.

You can use or not use the optional water filter. Your choice.

The BEST part of this unit is it''s simplicity. Slide your selected beverage packet into the holder, close the lid, push a button and PRESTO, in 30 seconds you have a wonderful fresh brewed drink, then open the head and dispose of the empty packet. I can go from making a cup of Columbian Coffee, to Lemon Calm tea and then make a cup of Hot Chocolate Cappuccino and not have to "clean" out anything. There is no way to transfer flavors from one brew to the next. No drippy pods to fool with, no filters to trap flavors, no splash back, no post beverage dripping.

The Flavia Fusion is actually better than their SB100. Like the others said, you cant brew the two packets which makes their Cappuccinos and other "speciality" drinks, like Chai Latte, Milky Way Chococcino. Pumpkin Pie Latte, Irish Cream Mochaccino, Milky Way Latte and a fabulous Chococcino.

The unit is smaller than the Tassimo and some others, but you''ll still need some counter space. But, It''s well worth it.

The Maximum drink volume the packet can make is up to 7 oz.....which to some may look small. I''ve found that I can immediately "re-use" the same packet for a second brew cycle to double the volume of the coffee and tea drinks.

Flavia has 30 different beverages available, and some can be used together to create speciality drinks. They are also in the process of creating more products. Flavia is a division of Mars Inc.....the same people who make Milky Ways, Smickers, M&M''s and other confections. I wonder if they''ll come up with a Snickers Latte??? in the future.

As my Title says, I''m so happy I bought this unit. It''s a tea, coffee, hot chocolate, latte, espresso cappuccino machine all rolled into one, WITH NO MESSY CLEAN UP of the unit or your counter inbetween drinks. Just pop a new packet in and you''re good to go.

I hope Amazon.com will look into selling the drink packets.

For someone who likes variety, and doesnt want to have a half dozen machines laying around......take a hard look at the Flavia Fusion. You wont be disappointed.

UPDATE.......... FLAVIA PACKETS..........

If you go to bfcoffee.com and email them about Flavia coffee''s and teas, they will send you back their current price list. They will sell to individuals, but the minimum order is a "case" (which is 100 packets of Coffee, 72 packets of Cocoa or 140 packets of Tea)...but the good news is they do offer a VARIETY CASE, which allows you to mix and match flavors to make a case of Coffee''s or a case of Teas.

I know a case sound like a lot, but once you get hooked on Flavia''s ease of use, you''ll find you''ll have that late evening cup of cocoa, decaf coffee or tea, or a second cup of Java in the morning. Prices per case start around $34.50 for the Coffee''s and $36.60 up to 58.50 for the teas. The cocoa is going for $29.95 a case. So, between Flavia''s web site and this vendor, and ebay, you should have no problems finding replacement packets.

March 25, 2006

Flavia machine still going strong. I use it at least 2-3 times a day. Have already had to re-order packets, like the Chai Tea, Cocoa, Froth packet and Breakfast Blend coffee. BFCOFFEE.COM is the best place for prices anywhere....even better than Flavia''s own site. I''m sipping a cup of Columbia coffee right now. Americans dont usually like a "strong" cup of coffee, so after the unit brews the packet the first time, I just re-push the light and let it brew again in the same mug. It comes out just the right strength for me. I would buy this unit again, without a second thought. It''s that good.

May 13th.....

Thought you might like to see my unit and how I store my Flavia Packets...so look for my 2 photos under " customer photos" just below Amazon''s picture of the Falvia Machine.

As the only person that drinks coffee in our home, I have used a one-cup coffee maker for over 20 years. I have tried them all, most recently the pod ones, but this one beats them all. It is so simple and quick. All you do is load a packet, hit a button, and voila, coffee that is comparable, if not better than that sold at coffee houses. In addition, the Fusion offers options to just coffee in the way of Tea, Hot Cocoa, and other "wellness" drinks.

The only drawback is that you are limited to puchasing the coffee packs from Flavia as there are no generic options available. None the less, their selection is superb and their prices are reasonable (about 40 cents per cup). I''m hooked.

I''ve been using a high-capacity flavia machine at work for many months before deciding to take my flavia experience home. There are more than 200 employees in my office, and they use the flavia machine like crazy. I myself have quite enjoyed the teas and the flavored coffee. I''m not a caffeine drinker, and happily there are some tasty flavors to choose from.

Let me cover the details that were falsely conveyed in the previous review.

1. POURING HEIGHT: The adjustable height does, in fact, accommodate a travel mug. You simply remove the drip tray, and, voila, your 16 oz. travel mug slides in with ease.

2. FLAVOR: The coffee does not taste horrible. My 200+ co-workers seem to agree with that statement, given their relentless use of the machine that, I might add, has yet to malfunction. In the end, everyone has different likes and dislikes about their coffee flavors and richness. Luckily, Flavia currently offers 16 coffee varieties, 4 tea varieties, 5 well-being (aka tea) varieties, 5 indulgence varieties (i.e. choco and chai tea,) and they also provide different mixes and flavorings. My husband is a coffee snob and he needs his coffee insanely strong. He found his desires met in the Sumatra blend. The handy strength meter on each packet has this blend at a 5+ factor. He loves it and drinks it in his travel mug every morning. The only thing that has not worked out flavor-wise for us is the creamy topping. It tastes like a very watery skim milk.

3. PACKAGING: There is no measuring. You just slide the packet in place, press the button and off to work. Using the travel mug, you''ll need to press the button twice once on the largest volume setting, and once on the smallest volume setting. It still takes less than a minute to brew. The one drawback of the packing and Flavia as a whole: you can only get the coffee/tea packets from Flavia and eBay. (Thus my four-star rating.) However, the cost savings between what you would buy at a coffee shop or even a bag at the local grocery store is felt immediately.

4. SHIPMENT: The machine''s packaging is not that cumbersome or painful to unpack. In fact, I had no trouble at all removing it from the box. After all, it is shipped for free from both Amazon and Flavia at the same price.

5. MACHINE SIZE: The machine''s dimensions are indeed accurate. Granted it was a little deeper than I had anticipated, but it still fits neatly on my counter top.

6. NOISE: The machine is slightly noisy, but, again, the brew time is ~30 seconds tops! Not to mention there are five different capacity settings, so you can have a little bit of coffee in ~15 seconds, or a lot of coffee in ~30 seconds.

7. CLEANUP: There will be splattering. You can not avoid that with any coffee maker. It is not excessive and requires light wiping probably once/week. That''s much better than having to clean a coffee pot and throw away filters with wet coffee grounds inside.

I would recommend this product to the coffee snob and caffeine hater. My husband and I are happy with it, and I love showing it to our guests everytime they come over. It''s a fun little addition to our kitchen, and I just love it.

Coffee Snob: Try Sumatra

Caffeine hater: Try Lemon Calm (yum-my!)

I''m a single, on-the-go, coffee drinker whos career requires long hours and not much free time. I like quality so I''m picky about what I drink. I prefer that my coffee beverages are strong and like to have them at home, on the road, in the office, after dinner, etc. I also like a variety of drink types, which is just one of the reasons why I love the Flavia Fusion drinks station! Not only can I make a good, strong cup of coffee, I can also make a cappuccino, coffee with chocolate, tea and many other varieties of hot or cold drinks quickly, easily and neatly. The filterpacks that come with the system make it super easy to create the variety I enjoy. Finally! Now I can make a great drink right from my home -and I can vary my drink choice with the push of a button. Plus, when I have guests over, they can make the drink of their choice quickly and easily as well. This would make a great Christmas gift!

BISSELL Pre-Motor Filter Style 7/8/14

BISSELL Pre-Motor Filter Style 7/8/14, 3290The products I received do not appear to be "genuine" Bissell filters, as the items were packaged in a plain clear resealable bag.

This is especially disappointing, given that Bissell charges $3 on its website (instead of the $7 charged here). I bought it on Amazon to avoid the additional shipping charges by Bissell (it worked out to be a dollar cheaper here).

As for the quality of the foam, it appears to be a different texture than the original filter. I''m not a foam expert, however, and they may be comparable.

Lesson learned.

I ordered filters clearly identified on the site as Genuine Bissel, which were not the filters I received. In fact the ones I were given were clearly of inferior quality, which increased my disappointment. The notion of deceit instinctively came to mind and why I contacted Amazon to request a refund.

I would not do business with this company again.

  • First leading brand shown to reduce trace levels of pharmaceuticals (pharmaceutical reduction is not certified by NSF/ANSI or state standard)

I have been using these for about 8 years now and moved to the 3 stage when they came out. I use them primarily for drinking water and cooking. They typically last about 3 months for me. I go through a LOT of drinking water and probably less than average for cooking.

Based on using them on two different water systems, I also believe the quality of the water going in makes a huge difference in the life of the filter... but then that really is just common sense isn''t it? For instance, using it the week after a city wide fire hydrant flushing will use one up very quickly. I can''t speak to what that means to anyone else, but it tells me it is WORKING!

As another reviewer mentioned... ONE HOT WATER EPISODE WILL KILL A FILTER! It is a shame it is this way, but I have on two occasions had someone turn on hot water and let it run through the filter for a while. The filter would stop flowing within a day after that. The instructions warn against this, but accidents happen.

On the other hand, I had one that would not flow at all right out of the box. I called the 800 number on the box, told them what happened and that I had put in a different filter, which worked, and then tried this one again... showing that I had done my due diligence, and I had a replacement in the mail within a week, no cost, without having to return the failed one.

Also, if you buy the 6 pack, they are under $10 each.

It absolutely DOES make the water taste and smell better than plain tap water.

I''ve been using these filters since 2005, and I have been ordering them online in 6 packs from this site since 2009.

I''m not sure what is going on, but after the second filter change in this most recent purchase, I''ve come to the conclusion that these filters have been "changed" such that their performance has dramatically declined. Simply put, my water now tastes POORLY.

The first thing I noticed upon receipt of this latest 6-pack, is that the outer wrapping of the individual filters is not shrink/vacuum--packed. In all previous orders these filters where vacuum-packed. Secondly, there is no product labeling on the same wrappers, which was not the case in previous orders for they were labeled. Third, the filters feel "less heavy" and feel similar to salt shakers, in that one can tell there are loose granules inside (some of which appear loosely leaked inside the packaging--white round granules), which I never noticed before. Finally, the best and most important indicator that something has been altered is the taste of the hard (and very same) water for which I''ve been using these since 2005...it tastes poorly (bitter, chemical-like taste) compared to the "neutral" clean taste of said filtered-water previously, and there is a slight residue/cloudiness visible in appearance in the water, whereas it was clear with previous filters. Another indicator is the increased left-over deposits in my coffee maker (also the coffee now tastes bad). These filters are obviously NOT filtering/cleaning my water as in previous years.

Finally, along with the change in package appearance of the 6-pack box, I noticed that these are also (now?) "Made in Mexico" which I don''t recall was the case of my previous orders...can''t say for sure, but the product was consistent in performance (and appearance) since 2005...(I''ll also say that I was using the Pur 2 stage water filters successfully for 5 years previously).

I haven''t contacted the manufacturer, which I will do so in order to get their response to the above-mentioned issues. I shall update when I do so.

Until then, I can NO LONGER recommend this product, which was so wonderfully working for me for the last few years. (I haven''t checked local stores for comparison, and will do so).

Until I find some answers to what happened, I don''t recommend these filters. I will return with an update when I get one.

IMMEDIATE UPDATE: I just called Pur at 800-787-5463 and spoke with a CS rep. His response included the following: thanking me for calling and reporting my complaints, asking me for the lot number of the filter(s) which are performing poorly, stating he would report my complaints to the appropriate department, reminding me that Pur consistently performs quality assurance tests to avoid issues (duh!), and stating that he would send me a "Buy One Get One Free" coupon which I can expect to receive within the next 2-3 weeks after I give him my address/phone number. There were communication difficulties...the CS rep had a pronounced foreign accent and admitted he was having problems hearing me. So we will see...I do intend to follow-up this call with an email.

UPDATE: Decided to contact Amazon via phone for advice with very poor results. I DO NOT recommend trying to get much resolved via phone...unless, perhaps it''s Kindle-related. However, after my 3rd attempt at contacting Amazon by email, I received a reply stating they are sending me a new 6 pack via overnight mail and are requesting a return of my remaining defective product. Very nice response this time...will follow up soon. It remains to be seen whether the 6 pack I previously ordered was a bad lot or that Pur''s filter quality has dramatically declined.

5/14/11 UPDATE: Amazon quickly sent me replacement pack and asked that remaining "old" filters be returned. The quality of water tastes somewhat improved, but it seems that Pur changed this product for the worse. After I run through the remaining 4 filters, I shall no longer buy this product. 2 STARS.

UPDATE:

A few months after I posted this, PUR finally contacted me with an intelligent response.

They apologized (again) and explained that their RF-9999 DOES in fact contain ion-exchange resin.

I don''t know whether or not I should be surprised that it took them this long to come up with a response. Perhaps they assume that most people will have no idea what ion-exchange resin is and will therefore not ask about it or look for indication of it on the packaging.

Also, other people have responded to my review with useful comments. Check them out. For instance, one commenter explains this product''s certifications.

My original review:

I own a PUR faucet attachment that takes the RF-9999 filter replacement cartridge. Out of concern for my baby girl''s health, I wanted to make sure that the water we mix in her formula is free of lead and other heavy metals. The copper pipes that carry water in your house have enough lead content (to make them flexible) that water sitting in the lines for a few hours can build up unhealthy levels of lead that can cause all manner of developmental problems in children. For your health and that of your children, it''s best to be sure to flush your water lines before consuming tap water. Take a shower in the morning and run your faucets a little before you make coffee and mix formula. (Save the flush water in old milk jugs for watering your plants.) As added protection, it''s also a good idea to use a water filter with ion-exchange resin that will filter out residual heavy metals.

I noticed that the product description of the RF-9999 on Amazon.com mentioned that it includes ion-exchange resin. But when I looked at the filter''s packaging and the PUR web site, there was no mention of it, although the product does claim certain certifications regarding reduction of various heavy metals, including lead. According to PUR, the RF-9999 filter contains something to trap sediment, activated carbon that they claim also reduces lead, and some minerals. I spoke with a hydrologist from the U.S. Geological Survey about this, and he explained that activated carbon is largely ineffective at trapping heavy metals and that none of the other components of the filter would have any effect either; only a filter with ion-exchange resin would be able to significantly reduce the lead content.

Thus, I contacted PUR to inquire as to whether or not the RF-9999 contained ion-exchange resin, and if not, I wanted to know how it filtered lead and to inform them that Amazon.com''s description might be inaccurate. First, I got an automated response that seemed to have nothing to do with my question, so in accordance with their instructions, I replied, explaining that my question had not been answered. The reply to this was that they were sorry I was having trouble with their product (I had not reported any problems), and that they''d be happy to answer any questions I had. So, apparently, they lost my question. So I replied to that, repeating my question. The next respond quoted my previous email (with the question in it), and again apologized for the trouble I was having with their product, and told me that they''d be happy to answer any questions I had. I responded again, heading my email with another copy of my question. This time, I finally got something resembling an answer, but it was a brief and vague statement that the information on their web site was accurate. They said nothing to reassure me that there was anything in their product that could account for their claim of being able to reduce lead in the water.

Perhaps the people at PUR I was corresponding with were just incompetent. I can''t expect the customer service contact to know anything about chemistry or hydrology, but it irks me when they don''t take my question seriously enough to inquire internally to get me a proper answer, especially when I''m trying to take steps to safeguard my family''s health. Besides Amazon.com making inaccurate statements about this product (probably told to them by someone at PUR), PUR''s web site and packaging make claims that do not appear to stand up to basic scientific scrutiny. As far as I can determine, there''s absolutely nothing in the RF-9999 that would be able to reduce lead content in water by any appreciable margin.

If you are buying water filter products, then you''re probably doing it not just to improve the taste of the water, but because you have a clue that there are things in your city or well tap water that you might not want to drink. Be fully informed about these things, and never trust your health to product claims that you haven''t verified.

Don''t let the price scare you away (it''s actually a good deal). My local water has a displeasing taste/smell & this filter takes that water & turns it into .. well .. great tasting water. This filter will work on any of PUR''s faucet mounts.

It seems two reviewers below have major malfunctions in the operation of their filters; saying they only last a week or so, or do not work as advertised. It could be improper installation of the filter, or running a hundred gallons of water through them in two weeks.

I have been using these filters for years with no problems.

Cold Drip Coffee and Tea Maker Save 9% Off

Cold Drip Coffee and Tea Maker, 8-CupI recommend this unit even though it is a little bit pricey. After living in Japan years ago, I wanted to try my luck at making Japanese ice coffee at home. There are not that many choices around and considering that the Oji unit from Japan (seen at shops like Blue Bottle) goes for more than $1000USD w/shipping & duties, I took a shot at this little 8-cup Yama unit from Taipei for $200 here at Amazon. It''s as good a coffeemaker as it is a conversation piece. Good ice coffee is no fad. This is a different (and SLOW) method to make really smooth and intense ice coffee with less than 2/3 the acid of hot-brewed.

The unit arrived (via UPS) VERY well packed and unbroken. It took just a few minutes to put it together using the instruction sheet (see it here) http://www.fantes.com/manuals/yama-cold-drip-coffee.pdf Be careful NOT to over tighten the 4 screw-in feet into the baseboard as it''s easy to punch one thru the top of the baseboard as I did.

The included filters; one rinsable permanent ceramic filter which goes into the bottom of the coffee bowl to trap grounds, and some paper filters to place on top of the coffee. Use of the top paper filter is KEY to full flavor. The purpose of the filter is to SLOWLY distribute water EVENLY over the entire coffee bowl. Without the filter in the top, the drip will hit dead-center in the coffee bowl resulting in the water making it''s way to the bottom of the coffee bowl too quickly without completely extracting all of the coffee. I use those cheap unbleached (brown) paper filters for drip machines by folding it inward into a circle and fitting into the top of the coffee bowl. Cheap and works great.

Without a scale to measure-out 80 grams, I will scoop 12 heaping tablespoons of coffee into the bowl for a full pot (quart). Works well. Experiment with different coffees for different flavors. Sumatran beans from World Market make a real flavorful brew. Make sure to grind medium to coarse. Fine grinds can result in bitterness.

With the top jar full of water it makes about a quart of CONCENTRATED coffee nectar that can be placed in a glass jar in the fridge for up to 2 weeks...as if it''s really going to last that long! Old 2-qt OJ jars make for good fridge storage. The bottom glass beaker that catches the fresh coffee comes with a glass cap for fridge storage. It takes 3.5 to 4 hours to make a pot if you''re dripping at the recommended rate of 35-40 drips per minute. The petcock regulating waterflow works well enough. You can use cold water without the need to add ice. Either way is OK.

This "8-Cup Yama Water Drip Coffee & Tea Maker" is aesthetically quite pleasing in the corner of our countertop and the coffee is fun to make. It is a little over 2 feet tall. There are cheaper ways and methods to make Kyoto-style cold drip coffee but this method is not at all as messy as are some. All the glass and the ceramic filter easily rinse clean. And because the reviewer above stated that product support is solid if you break any of the 6 glass pieces, all the more reason to recommend.

My brother gave me this as a Christmas present and I''ve had it for over a year. It makes great coffee and looks wonderful on my kitchen countertop. Unfortunately, I banged one of the glass parts and cracked it last week. It still works, but I''m looking for a replacement piece before the crack spreads too much.

Avoid this if you need something that isn''t easy to break, but otherwise it''s really cool!

Update: I called the company that made this coffee maker today. They are sending a replacement part via priority mail. Hence the 5 stars. Great coffee, great look, great customer service.

I purchased this as a Christmas gift for my boyfriend after a similar model in a coffee shop piqued our interest. The coffee produced by this method is exceptional more for the process than the taste. The taste, while delicious, is indistinguishable from authentic Kona coffee. My boyfriends gift arrived with a broken lid even though it appeared to be packed carefully. Replacement took a little longer than we expected, but it was a non-essential part and it didn''t take away from our overall experience. I would buy this again.

A whole new experience in cold coffee. Creates a smooth even flavor for drinking cold coffee. Every single person who likes cold coffee and tries it this way exclaims "This is awesome, I want some more." I can''t make it fast enough.

If you use a French Press for hot coffee, you need this for your cold coffee. Same grind, complete different taste! :-)

Actually I don''t know how well this product works. The installation instructions were written by a non-English speaking person and were very confusing. I contracted a plumber who said it would take at least several hours to install because of all the drilling, etc, involved. In the end I gave my plumber friend the unit for his personal use and have credit on a couple of future service calls.

Big Berkey Water Filter-2 Black Filters and 2 Pf-2 Fluoride Filters Save 9% Off

Big Berkey Water Filter-2 Black Filters and 2 Pf-2 Fluoride Filters
  • Complete stainless steel water purification system
  • Can filter up to 3.5 gallons per hour
  • 2 Black Berkey Purification Filters
  • Holds approximately 2.25 gallons of filtered water
  • 2 PF-2 Fluoride and Arsenic Reduction Elements

I want to love my Berkey. I know people who love theirs. And it certainly is attractive. Unfortunately, we had to replace the filters 3 times in the first 6 months. The first time we noticed the chlorine taste returning to our water. After that, we just spot checked periodically with the red dye. Sometimes we could flush the filter and it would take care of the problem, other times not. Then we would call the company, who would very nicely send out another filter set (FREE, please note that we weren''t charged for new filters each time). One time the filter caps fell right off (the company said it was a bad batch).

So now I''m paranoid. If we don''t test every batch of water, how do we know the filters are actually working? Most of the time, we couldn''t tell by taste that they were failing; it was only the presence of red dye in the water when we tested that alerted us. I wouldn''t feel comfortable at ALL trusting these filters if my health depended on it, like in a disaster or third world country. It makes me wonder how often everybody else is red dye testing their water. Probably not very often, if my experience is anywhere near typical.

On top of that, I gave up completely on the fluoride filters, which were one of my main reasons for purchasing the Berkey. No amount of flushing could get rid of the taste.

Now the plastic spigot handle has broken off (two pieces of plastic 1/16" in size at most were holding it on, one of them broke). It''ll only cost $19 to replace it. My husband stuck a key ring in the hole and we''re getting by until I throw the whole thing out the window or breakdown and buy the part. I''m shopping for alternatives if anybody can recommend a better filter.

They do get points for good customer service, though the company could never explain WHY the filters kept failing. I appreciated them sending the replacements out right away, but it gets pretty annoying to have to wait to use it till new filters arrive and then wonder how long until those ones go bad. Which reminds me, I need to go dye my water. Fingers crossed...

My husband and I have been using Brita style water filters for years -not only does our area (Metro DC) have atrocious bleachy water, but our condo building shuts off the water for monthly repairs and it always runs cloudy white and silty brown afterwards. (You should see the muddy-metallic buildup in the toilet cisterns.)

But we use so much water between us for tea and coffee and the home carbonation system, that poor little filter jug would get filled countless times per day, and that''s without using it for cooking water. What I hadn''t noticed was I had eventually stopped drinking water, at all. I had grown to hate water so much that I was disguising it with herbal teas and juice. That''s not right. As soon as I drank my first glass of Berkey water, I could not believe how sweet and light it was. Pretty much exactly what water should be! Gone was the dreaded heavy flatness of the old filter water. It has now become a sought after beverage -we still have to work on developing the habit, but it''s quite a pleasure.

The 4 filters take up a lot of space in top and bottom reservoirs, but there''s still a ton of water on tap; we don''t even fill it daily now, so I am sure we will have a full year of use before cleaning and changing the filters out.

My next purchase will be the glass sight spigot, since it''s cumbersome to lift the top section to check on the lower levels, and I don''t really have the grip for it when full either.

The instructions are quite involved, but I figured it all out quickly enough. They tell you to put the conical white washer inside, narrow end to hole, and the flat black one outside, but it leaked with a slow drip. No matter how I tightened it or how many tricks I learned on the manufacturer/distributor websites, it still leaked into the sink after the first tightening, then seeped slowly into the rubber base liner after the second tightening. It spent the first few weeks hanging over the kitchen sink and getting in the way of everything, until I switched the washers. The white washer doesn''t look great outside, but the leak has been sealed tight, and I''ve been able to move the ensemble to a safer place.

Bottom line, this is the best investment we have made all year. I spent months researching water purification methods and briefly considered the white ceramic candles, but figured if there were ever a municipal water issue, this would be the way to go. It filters out everything except the minerals. Water being so important to survival and health, I figured it was about time we took the leap and got one (in November), and we do not regret it.

***Update, May 2, 2012: Six months later and we''re still loving the clean water. I''ve had to scrub out the top reservoir only a couple of times because of sediment buildup (like plastic dust) from our condo water that floats in the water and coats the inside of the reservoir. Then I rinse out the bottom reservoir just for the sake of it. Last night was my first time needing to scrub the black filters because the flow had stopped. Six months is a good run between scrubs! It''s back to flowing perfectly.

Also, I''m even more relieved that I have the PF-2 Fluoride/Arsenic filters because last week I found out that Maryland has some of the most heavily fluoridated water in the nation!

I posted this elsewhere on Amazon for the Big Berkey and two black filters. This is the same product and actually my purchase came with both the black filters and these two fluoride filters, so I''m re-posting to make sure that buyers beware. The Big Berkey (BB) has been a regular source of frustration and, ultimately, a significant waste of money for me. I would advise everyone to avoid this carelessly designed water purification system. Compared to a Brita or Pur water pitcher, the BB is a significantly bigger up front layout of cash. Doing some research and reading reviews, I was convinced it was worth it, both for superior water filtering and long term savings in water filters. As far as the filtering, I''ll never know. What I can tell you is that the Black Berkey Purification Element design is exceedingly poor. After all this time on the market, you''d think some engineer for Berkey would care enough to have figured out a satisfactory method of securing the filter to the upper chamber. This isn''t the case, however. You have to poke the spindly "threaded mount" onto a washer, then through a hole in the chamber, then secure the element by screwing on a wing nut. Sounds simple enough and it is. Except the wing nuts routinely--and I''ve been through three or so--strip the threads on the stupid filter. Then it doesn''t seal to the upper chamber. Then you have unfiltered water drip into the lower chamber. I bought another expensive set of black purification filter elements, just to get my hands on another wing nut. Same thing happened. And yes, I was very careful. If the wingnuts aren''t tight, unfiltered water seeps into the lower chamber where you expect filtered water. I tried the new filters with the wingnuts. Same thing happened to one of them. The Berkey instructions helpfully advise you to check that there are no leaks by putting food coloring in the upper chamber. I have used all the food coloring in the house, trying time after time to seal the !**#%^! threaded mounts through the upper chamber, tightening the nut just tight enough but not so tight as to strip the threads, then waiting to see if the food coloring comes through. What a horrible little exercise and waste of water as one time after another the colored water seeps around the hole in the upper chamber. It is a pathetic design, really, for fastening a filter to a metal bucket, i.e., the upper chamber. Also, as others have mentioned, the spigot is almost worthless; I upgraded immediately to the glass tubed spigot; otherwise you can''t see how much water is in the lower chamber. So there was that unexpected cost of a new spigot; the cost of another set of filters to try with new wingnuts; and the initial outlay. All added up to a routinely leaky and, therefore, worthless setup. Not to mention the hours wasted messing with the threads and wingnuts and waiting for unfiltered water to seep around the wingnuts into the lower chamber. A complete disaster.

I was fed up with replacing the filters for my old system every 3 months and decided to buy the Big Berkey water filtering system.

Although it''s much more expensive than my old Pure system, replacing the filters every year will be more cost effective.

The filter worked great for 3 month. Water tasted great, no after taste and I was really happy with my purchase.

3 months later, water started to taste funny. I thought it''s time to clean the system so I took it apart and washed it in the dish washer (as it''s recommended in the manual).

Put the filter back together and water still have a acidic after taste. My wife told me the same thing (before me even telling her about it).

Obviously the filters went bad. It''s just 3 months. There were supposed to last for more than a year! I''m just filtering tap water and refilling the filter 1-2 times/week!.

I''m hugely disappointed in the product. I could have stayed with my old Pure system and changed the filter every 3 month and saved $300!

I think this product is greatly overrated or maybe it used to be good in the past. I don''t recommend it to anyone.

Warning! Do not handle product horizontally, the black filter element will break off at the screw-in base in less then a year. Trying to get a warranty replacement from Millenium Concepts was impossible, even after they admitted to having a "bad" batch. I do not recommend this product or the distributors.
