I use filters in my rv and have been for years. Culligan makes a quality product. The only thing is they don''t have the anti-bacteria, KDF, in this model. So I would buy the Camco, which has it, and it is cheaper. Culligan makes it with KDF, so you can get it in the Model 700 or 800 series. But be prepared to pay for it.

Just to start, I''m extremely cynical and I don''t subscribe to the idea that just because it''s expensive makes it the best. I must admit, this is the best cup of coffee I have ever made. I just received this coffee maker (via Zappos,) as Amazon isn''t shipping direct yet. I''ve been drinking my coffee virtually the same way for 25 years, so my test this morning contained the same coffee, measurements, and ingredients I have always used. I went through the steps as directed by Viking, and the end result was a hotter, deeper, zero-bitter cup of amazing coffee.

*Side Note: Even though this coffee maker comes with a filter, always use filtered water. We have HIGH mineral content water, so this is something we have always used anyway. Viking states, that not doing so with this kind of water, will void the warranty. The coffee maker will tell you when it''s time to "de-calcify" (this may or may not occur when using filtered water).

There WILL be a bit of a time-consuming (roughly 30-40 minutes) initial process you WILL need to invest in so don''t intend on having that first cup if you are pressed for time. There is an initial "priming" (using roughly 2 cups of water), then a "first 10-cup brew" of just water only (for cleaning purposes). After that, you''re ready for clock set-up, auto programming, and finally time to brew! I used the reusable filter that comes with it instead of the usual non-bleached disposable filters, and I have nothing negative to say about it.

As far as our usual process, we use our favorite whole-bean coffee and grind it in a burr grinder at the finest setting.

Is it worth $300.00? If the flavor, temperature, and dependability of the machine all hold up, it will be a resounding yes. I will update this review over time to let you know for sure.

SIX-WEEK UPDATE: Still impressed, no regrets! Overflowed once (my fault) I filled the water tank over the fill line when I selected the 12-cup serving. If I had one criticism, it would be how slowly it pours when opened to the "o" mark. I''m assuming Viking made it an intentional feature in order to keep the remaining coffee hot which it does. Obviously, one can take the lid completely off to remedy that.

**FLASHING "dcl": So it finally said it was time to decalcify. Easy process, but allow yourself ~20 minutes to do this. The only thing that wasn''t covered in my instruction book was how to get the "dcl" to quit flashing after the process was done. It''s not automatically detected YOU NEED TO PRESS THE "ON" BUTTON, THEN HOLD DOWN THE "BREW" BUTTON (NOT SIMULTANEOUSLY) FOR A FEW SECONDS TO CLEAR IT. Hopefully newer packaged instructions will show this. Still no regrets! **Don''t forget to replace the filter in the reservoir.**

You''d expect a bit more for $300 carafe leaks everywhere when you pour the coffee. Who the heck tested this product at Viking??? Do not buy looks pretty But doesn''t pour correctly!!!!

That was my original review. After speaking to Viking I learned that I had to keep it on the open (o) position and not between the locked and open, while pouring, as their directions state. Works GREAT no more leaks and it''s such a great looking coffee machine! They just need to correct their directions.

The only good thing that I can say about this machine is that is brews a hot pot of coffee. Other than that, it has been a huge disapointment. While the carafe is wrapped in a stainless strip, the balance of the unit is made of the sort of plastic and in a similar design as a $30-$60 machine. At half the price this machine would be over-valued

Some features that have been particularly irksome:

1.) The filter is ill-fitting and surely cannot actually filter as the water easily by-passes the filer

2.) The machine is noisy it emits a pulsing / grinding noise every 10 seconds while brewing

3.) The carafe does not fit well under the spring-loaded brewing area

4.) The electronics (at least on the machine I''ve purchased) are fickle and every morning I have to run through a combination of unplug, plug back in, hit program, specify number of cups, on-off, etc to try to get the thing to go to work.

This coffee maker may have the Viking name plate but do not expect it to be anything close to the quality of your Viking stove or fridge.

We started looking for a reliable, high-quality coffee maker after our Krups XP2070 failed us (will not power on) after two years, and our Krups KM7000 grind-n-brew after 13 months (leaked, shipped in for repair, then jammed). We were willing to spend a little more money for a higher quality, reliable coffee maker this time around.

There seems to be a gap in the market between the lower-end (Cuisinart, Krups, etc) and the high end (>$700), then we stumbled on this Viking 12 cup coffee maker. We know of the Viking brand, but had never owned a Viking product so we weren''t sure if their quality matched their price.

We took the plunge and ordered and received our Viking coffee maker about two weeks ago, so this is an initial impressions review. When it quits working we''ll update this review with our post-mortem thoughts (which we hope won''t be for a long time).

Initial impressions are very good. It looks nice and feels high quality the fit and finish matches our expectations for the Viking brand. The front and carafe are stainless steel, and the sides are a high-quality metallic looking plastic. Initial priming was quick and easy. We like the side loading water canister and coffee filter since our old coffee makers were filled from the top and we had to pull them out from under our kitchen cabinet everyday to fill them. It''s not loud, but you will hear a couple of water pump sounds during its brew cycle. The carafe doesn''t spill, which surprised us because all of the Krups glass carafes we''ve owned, invariably spilled (almost by design..grr) it''s amazing how nice a non-spilling carafe is! :) The carafe is insulated and keeps coffee steaming hot for hours -it''s still drinkable warm in mid-afternoon.

The water is hot and the brew is good. Yum. It took about 4 days to dial in the correct coffee strength (tip: use the # of cups to control the amount of coffee you make, not the amount of water you add to the water canister. )

The only improvement we can think of is a chime at the end of the brew cycle to let us know the coffee is ready.

It''s not feature packed, but after our previous experiences we were looking for less features in exchange for good product design, quality and reliability. Overall we are very happy with our new Viking coffee maker and at this point enthusiastically recommend it.

When I first started using the product it seem to take long to brew. Within two weeks the product failed completely. Because it was used, regarless of how little, it could not be returned to AMazon. They did not care.

A call to Viking met with rude people; however, one person promised a complete new coffe maker, but it would take 6-weeks. I agreed to wait. Surprise, surprise a partial unit arrived in two weeks. When I opened the box, it was clear this unit had been used:Viking did not even try to clean it or to buff out the scratches and dents before sending it me. Someone else had returned a damaged unit. And it just was sent to me. Follow-on calls to Viking are all met with not my problem call this number (I now have 7 different 800 for Viking in the and out of the US). Finally after hours on the phone, I got someone to listen. Send many detailed pictures which got me a third unit that did not work.

Unless you have money to toss away, do not purchase this unit.

Starbucks Sirena Espresso Machine

Bottom line up front: I''m happy with the Sirena.

I''m not a coffee snob and don''t really care one way or another what name comes on the outside of the machine. I like strong espresso and this machine doesn''t disappoint. There are a couple of things that I like and a couple of things that I don''t. Here they are:

Like:

Easy to use

Can grow with you, i.e. if you want to pull out the Pressurizing disc and start tamping your own shots, you can, and after some practice, will probably get a better quality of crema and espresso. Bean quality, grind, etc... dependent.

Quick heat up time (less than 2 mins in the morning) and quick steam (less than 10 seconds.

Good micro-foam on the steamer. My wife likes capuccinos and the good quality foam makes her very happy.

Dislike:

The water level sensor drives me crazy. It comes on, I refill the container, and it doesn''t go off. I have to mess with the container where it attaches to the machine to get it to turn off....eventually. I''ve read more than a few reviews about this problem. Small overall, but annoying.

Price. I purchased this machine at the X-mas special (499 w/grinder, barista kit, 1lb coffee with a 30% employee discount ($375 paid in the end). It was an incredible deal...that made it very worth the money. Full price...I don''t know. I like this machine, but I''m cheap and I''d rather pay for quality and performance than looks. This machine offers both, but without the discount it would''ve made my choice more difficult.

There is a great thread on coffeegeek.com about the Sirena. A guy named Wayne, a.k.a. roastaroma, has made it his mission in life to break this machine apart and extract every bit of usefullness out of it. For true coffee lovers looking for a great machine his insights might help make up your mind.

6 month update (1 July 2008).

The steam knob stripped out about 3 weeks ago. One minute I was frothing milk, the next I was trying to get a scalding hot jet of steam to stop...awesome. I contacted SB and they gave me the number to their warranty dept. I called their warranty dept and they told me that SAECO not SB warranted the item. Okay, so I call SAECO and was not exactly pleased with the response. First, they confirmed that the unit was under warranty..good. Second, they sent me a form to fill out detailing the problems with the machine. They had me fax that form back to their warranty dept...okay so far. Third, they informed me that I was responsible for packing and shipping the machine back to them with no reimbursement. Fourth, they told me that if anything other than the previously faxed deficiencies were discovered that it would be repaired at my cost. Bottomline, if something breaks during shipment, you pay for it out of pocket along with the shipping and handling you''ve already spent sending a defective item back to the manufacturer.

I haven''t had a lot of problems getting things serviced in the past. SAECO''s warranty repair system seems a little too involved and isn''t user friendly in my opinion. I contacted the Starbucks that I purchased the machine from and was able to swap out the machine...but the less than ideal experience with SAECO is important to share.

Other than that the machine is still working well and am still happy that I purchased it. Starbucks customer service made up for the problems with SAECO.

The Sirena has a bit of a learning curve but once you realize that you do so much better without the "self-tamper" you''ll be on your way. My problem was the machine backed up all the time until I read that I should remove the disk and the rubber self tamper -it made all the difference between HATING this machine and loving it. I can now pack a lot of coffee into the basket without the thing blowing up. Also, I did not realize there was a whole world of tampers. Now that I have a good tamper, not a plastic one!, my espresso has changed considerably.

The good:

1) Once you remove the tamper the coffee is great.

2) You can reprogram the coffee levels

3) Looks great

4) Easy clean-up

5) Decent foaming

The bad:

1) Sprays a little too much water while steaming milk

2) If you have your machine under the counter, it''s a little hard to pull the water tank out

3) A learning curve

I bought this machine from a local Starbucks as a replacement to our Solis Crema sl70. We had the Solis for 10 years and loved it. The Sirena was at the same price point and looked great so we opted to change. What a disappointment. The Sirena has a plug, rubber gasket and basket, all of which are challenging to remove for cleaning. There is also wait time to which we were not accustom; wait for the machine to heat up, make espresso, wait again for the espresso to heat so you can select steam and wait for that to heat up. The steam pump would produce a good amount of water before actually pumping steam. We allowed time for us to get used to the new machine however after 10 days of use, we took it back for a refund. Positive note about Starbucks; they took it back without any hassles stating they stand behind their products.

Ok I spent hours pouring over reviews of machines before purchasing the Sirena. Because I wanted to do everything just right, I took an hour after the purchase to set it up following the extended instructions word by word. (For more experienced users, the quick setup would work and you would have your drink quick!) My first latte was amazing! I didn''t even use syrup it tasted great.

My initial concern: long time to brew espresso/confusion as to the purpose of the "self-tamper". It took a long time for my shots to pull, mostly just dripping. So, I reread thoroughly all the Amazon reviews (much better than those on the SB website) and found that:

FIRST those with major issues probably had faulty machines or it was user-error. (no offense)

SECOND there is some trial and error required for grind, etc.

MOST IMPORTANT if your shots pull slowly (drip) simply POKE A LARGER HOLE IN THE RUBBER GASKET (self tamper).

Although I tried removing the self-tamper completely as some suggested it produced zero creme. By simply using a sewing needle to open the hole a bit more, my espresso flowed smoothly out of the portafilter in seconds and it had the most beautiful creme. I AM THRILLED! I tested the heat of the straight shot and it was quite warm but when added to frothed milk at a temp of 160 or more it was the most delightful latte I have ever had definitely rivals that of SB!

This machine is great for quality espresso, quality froth and good looks.

Oh one more thing I do agree with other reviewers that the need to drain the excess water from the steam wand before steaming is annoying, however, I have a system. Here is my method:

1. Turn on and warm up, meanwhile warm your mug with hot water

2. Once machine is ready, run 2 shots of water through to heat up the portafilter (I have the two most perfect glasses I use to hold the shot they are tall slender juice glasses that fit perfectly under the portafilter)

3. Leave the portafilter connected while steaming/frothing milk

a. use one of the juice glasses (or another tall glass) to collect the excess water from the steam wand before steaming milk in stainless steel pitcher.

b. steam/froth milk to at least 160 degrees. I am able to steam first, then froth the top or visa versa. The frother is great!

4. Set milk aside or on warmer (the warmer isn''t that warm, so don''t count on it for "heat")

5. Remove hot portafilter, wipe out extra water/grounds and fill for one or two shots

6. Replace portafilter and choose your shot size (the time it took to add your espresso grounds is exactly enough to rewarm the machine)

7. Pull your shots, pour into mug and add milk immediately.

**Starbucks trains that you should add your milk to shots within 10 seconds for best results. That is why frothing first is important!

I have it down to a science now after just owning the machine for 4 days. If I learn anything new, I will update/edit my review. I think reviews are so important for others considering a product or having problems. They sure helped me and I hope I helped someone else!

Waterwise 4000 Water Distiller Purifier Save 24% Off

I have had a Waterwise 4000 distiller for over 3 years now and it has been wonderful. With regular cleaning it runs 1-2 gallons per day without a hitch. I have found the company easy to contact and work with when I have questions.

I bought this distiller from another website a few months ago because of the great discounted price I got but this distiller had turned out to be a major headache. I hate posting this kind of a review because it does distill water pretty well but my major issue with this product is a design flaw. Specifically the filter. It leaks like crazy and nothing that I''ve done has resolved this. Sure waterwise got back to me quickly with their standard response, which was to run a cup of water through the filter to rinse out excess charcoal then boil for 5 minutes and let cool. Finally, rinse briefly with more distilled water. Sounds easy, right? Wrong. I just installed my 4th filter yesterday and was so excited because my first gallon distilled perfectly with no spillage or filter leaks. Second gallon was not so good. I started it about two o''clock in the morning and by 2:30 it had started distilling. I walked over to the distiller and this time the water was pouring out of the side of the filter. I was forced to wrap a rag around the base of the bottle to absorb the excess water and this is frustrating. I don''t like wasting water and clearly the problem lies in the fact that water is distilled faster than the filter can process it initially which results in a leaking filter. Now, as I mentioned in my title, the Pure Water Inc. water distiller does not have this same flaw, is stainless steel and is Made in the USA. Only the waterwise 8000 is Made in the USA. This one is Made in China! So, if I had to do this all over again I would buy the Pure Water Inc over this one anyday. In fact, I''ll be buying one within the next month and putting this one into storage. I''d sell it on ebay but I wouldn''t wish this headache on anyone.

Lastly, on the plus side, the water that is distilled does taste great! However, I can''t recommend this product because of the constant problems I''ve had with this item and the fact that there is no solution to resolve it.

Update: I received a correspondence from Waterwise and they were very kind in their message to me. They mentioned that sometimes the filters are over packed with charcoal and this may present a problem with water not flowing through the filter correctly. I have trying their recommendation of poking a few small holds in the paper that separates the plastic cover from the charcoal. I used a pin, as they suggested. Also, they have offered to send me a six pack of filters as a replacement if I am still having problems. That''s pretty good customer service if you ask me. Still, the filter design needs some work. Watch for an update after I process another three to four gallons after poking holds in the filter.

Update 2: Ok, I think I''ve figured out the correct amount of charcoal to remove from a new filter. I''ve been playing with different amounts and it seems like the correct amount to remove is 1/2 tsp. When you first go to replace the filter first remove the mesh screen sitting on top of the filter. It will pop out if you insert a thin knife at the back of the screen and then pry it up. Then remove the paper cover and finally remove 1/2 tsp of charcoal. Replace the paper cover then the screen and make sure it snaps back into place. After this proceed with pouring one to two cups of distilled water through the filter followed by boiling the filter for five minutes. Removing 1/2 tsp of the charcoal before aeration seems to take care of the problem with the leaking filter. If you have this same problem and keep beating the walls because your filter is leaking then try removing a little more. I suspect you can remove up to a teaspoon without it making a difference. So far though my waterwise is working perfectly. However, as stated in title of my review, my next distiller will be a Pure Water Inc. distiller. The Mini II can be purchased on the web at a discount or you can even message the folks at pure water inc. and they will offer you a substantial discount if there isn''t a store in your area that carries it. Also, Pure Water Inc. Machines are all Made in the USA. That''s another good reason to buy one. Oh, and the glass bottles for the Mini II are only about $20 if you want to purchase a second one. That''s a significant difference from the Made in China glass bottle for this machine that sells for around $54 here on amazon.

Update 3 (final comments)

After contacting Waterwise about the issues with their filter dripping they promptly sent me out a pack of filters for free. The first thing I noticed when I took one of the filters out is that the mesh top has been redesigned. Clearly the realised the last screen was a poor design and changed it. It works much better now. The new screen is plastic, instead of metal mesh, and the sections are larger, which allows for more water to drip down through the filter. So far the filters are nice and I''ve had no problems. I have started purchasing activated charcoal from a local aquarium store. It just makes sense to refill them myself. Eventually, I''ll have to replace the paper that sits between the cover and the screen. I''m sure the aquarium store can tell me what kind of paper will work for this purpose. So, I bumped up the number of stars to 4 but this unit will never get a 5. There''s too much plastic that my water comes in contact with. If you want a good, inexpensive distiller that will make produce quality water then look no further than a waterwise 4000. However, if you have additional concerns about your water making contact with plastic, like me, then go with a Pure Water Inc. distiller. All of their distillers are Made in the USA and your water only makes contact with stainless steel.

To my extreme surprise, the water filters remove nothing from the water, the contaminent levels are equal with the tap water in each of my two houses!!! I ran gallons of water through the filters and the readings never went down. So I called GE, customer service informed me there was a small chance I could have received 2 defective filters, and I should try to return them to Amazon. I tested the HM water meter on bottled water that is supposed to be very pure, and it was. Arrowhead water is at a "marginally safe tap water" level. My neighbor''s reverse osmosis worked well. (I highly recommend everyone get a water meter...especially if you are putting any kind of trust in these GE filters!).

I prefer cleaning the floor the old fashioned way, on my knees and with a soft cloth turned often. After being cleaned the floor has a nice, soft sheen.

I''ve also used the Bona on my ceramic tile bathroom floor on occasion. It makes the tile sparkle without making it slippery.

The Bona formula is non toxic but can cause stomach irritation. I haven''t personally tried drinking any Bona, so I will take the manufacturer''s word about the stomach irritation.

The price for the cleaner on Amazon from this vendor is as good or better than any local seller''s in Spudland.

We loved our zero water system. After a few months the water started tasting funny and had a foul fishy smell. The meter tested the water under 6 so we knew the filters should still be good. We changed the filters any way, way before time. Still fishy smell. I cleaned the filtration bottle. Still the same. It wasn''t till I took apart the stand the water filtration was on that I discovered a film of slime in our cooler. At the time we had one of those cold/hot dispensers a few feet tall. We changed the water filtration to a countertop no cold/hot type holder and havn''t had any problems since. The filters last many months now. Also if you put water in the filtration system above the middle white ring....it will leak. Water is meant to only be stored in the lower 1/2 of the system.

I''ve been buying bottled water for years and was kinda getting tired of always hauling the cases of water around. Then my girlfriend talked myself and one of my children into a diet that included drinking a large quantity of water a day, so I decided it was time to switch to the 5-gallon bottles and a dispenser. Found a wonderful stainless dispenser at that makes hot water hot enough for tea and cold water just right for drinking. So now I have to mess with the 5-gallon water bottles. This basically gave me, I thought, 3 options. Having a water delivery service (very expensive), picking up 5-gallon water bottles pre-filled at a place like Home Depot, or taking the empty water bottles in to Wal-Mart and for $2.00 a bottle, refilling them myself. All of these options required that I have storage for a couple empties, and all of them have varying degrees of annoyance. Then while walking through the Home Depot I came across the Z-bottles by ZeroWater. Seemed like the answer to all of my problems.

So, I bought the bottle and hooked it up. Went easily into the new water dispenser and immediately started making water. I personally really like the taste of the water. I have one daughter who belives it tastes metallic, and a couple other household members who really like it. If you think about it, Dasani starts with purified water (000) then adds stuff to it for flavor, so not real surprising that the flavor is not something enjoyed by all, though I myself am real happy. Would be nice if the ZeroWater people could come up with a second type of filter that would add back some stuff to improve that flavor back to a Dasani flavor or something (believe I heard that Dasani measures like 039 parts per million of total disolved solids.

Anyway, for me, this Z-bottle is the way to go. I''m not storing anything but new filters. No huge 5-gallon water bottles sitting around. I''m not lifting and changing water bottles. I''m not running water bottles to the store, or paying a crazy amount of money to have them delivered. All I''m doing is filling a pitcher with water every night and dumping it into the top chamber of the Z-bottle. Nothing could be easier.

One other word to the wise. I''ve read some reviews where people complain about the water not immediately registering a 000 with new filters, or starting to smell right away. When I bought mine, I decided to buy filters as well. Home Depot was clearing them out so everything was marked half price and I decided to buy them out and be set for a long time to come. Upon putting the filter boxes into the cart, I noticed that some of them had been re-sealed. At $60 per box of 4 (I was getting for $30), I decided to take them up to customer service and check them out. The re-sealed ones looked good. Then I had them open an un-opened one. Not only was the un-opened one in a plastic bag, which the re-sealed ones were not, the filter itself, where the holes are for the water to go through, was somewhat shiny, whereas the re-sealed ones were a very black matte color. This was true for all 3 boxes of re-sealed filters, whereas all 3 boxes of filters that were not re-sealed were shiny. My assumption? At $60 box, people were using them, cleaning them up, and returning them to Home Depot for their money back. Would not surprise me at all that the people with negative reviews, and with water filters not registering 000 from the start and going out real quick may have been purchasing and using USED filters. Moral of the story, make sure the boxes of filters you are buying have never been open, or open them up and look for the "new" signs like in plastic bags and "shiny" black instead of "matte" black.

At first the water tasted fine and we were happy, but after about a month and half we noticed a fishy odor in the water itself (while the water tester was still reading zero). There are only two of us so I have trouble believing we could use up the filters that quickly and besides the water tester indicates the water is still clean each time the smell occurs. I looked on the Zerowater website and found no information about foul odors. I contacted customer service and all they could say was "sorry you''re dissatisfied". We''ve had to replace the expensive filters every month and a half and my husband cleans and airs out the entire system each time he replaces the filters (which we have had to do 4 times now). Now we are very dissatisfied with the product and frustrated because we don''t want to keep lugging home water and buying more plastic bottles. Personally, the smell is so gross that even after the filters are changed I''m hesitant to drink the water.

I completely respect the views of those outlining their poor experience, but I''m stunned.

We''ve had ours for over two years, and have found it to be fantastic. We live in an area where there is so much chlorine in the water I joke that it is the "Hartford District Pool Water". I literally cannot bear drinking from the faucet. When we put it through the ZeroWater system, it tastes like nothing but pure water. It is one of the few low-cost solutions that can remove chlorine so effectively.

We have not changed the filters since we bought it two years ago. We tested its output about 6 months ago, and I think it was registering 1 ppm.

Some reviewers note the "leaking". Come on folks...it is a split structure--of course if you put more water in than the bottom half can handle it will overflow.

Another reviewer pointed out how slow it is. That is true. So plan ahead. No biggie. We keep a one gallon jug handy at all times, pour the "pool water" in when the ZeroWater gets low, and we''re fine.

I also exchanged a number of phone calls and emails with the company to verify that the plastics used in the product do not contain BPA. They were very helpful in providing detailed and publicly available information that indicated that the product is made of AS and ABS plastics, which are variations on styrenes, and that styrenes do not pose a BPA risk.

Spectacular product. I highly recommend it.

I wanted to add my opinion on Zero Water filtration system. I bought this system at Target for + tax. Before I installed it, I read up on it, and I''m aware of possible high filter costs, but whenever I get billed for every 5 gallon bottle of water from Sparkllets, I feel like I get ripped off.

Before I installed the Zero water system, water from Sparkellet read at 10-11, which is far better than Fullerton City water, which read at over 350!. I installed the system on 7/28/10, and the installation was fairly easy, washing the whole system was not very difficult either. I just tested the water, and the meter does read 0, and the water tastes great!

I did over fill the reservoir this morning, and my wife was unhappy because of the mess, but it was because I put too much water in there. I thought the water I put in was enough to top off the reservoir, but it''s better to leave some room so you don''t make a mess like I did.

We go though about 10 gallons of drinking water in 2 weeks, so I''m hoping the filters will last me at least 2 months. If it does, the filter system would pay for itself. And hopefully, if the filters can last 2-3 months in the future, I would be saving money on water and won''t worry about breaking my back replacing the 5 gallon bottles.

I''ll keep you all informed if anything happens with the system.

Update: 8/11/10

It''s been 2 weeks, and the meter still reads 0. No smell. No more spills. We''re going through about 1-2 gallons a day, with 4 adults and 2 kids. We make at least 10 cups of coffee/day, use the water to cook and drink. So according to my calculation, we''ve at least gone through 15-20 gallons of water in 2 weeks. That''s a saving of so far compared to sparklletts. =)

Alas! The Fish smell has struck! Yesterday, I check the water level, and all of a sudden it read 66. I thought that''s strange. It shot up from 0 to 66 within a couple of days. Needless to say, I was very disappointed. So I decided to clean out the system. While I was cleaning, I noticed that the smell came from the filter and the container. I used the disinfectant wipe from costco to wipe the inside of the container and the outside of the filters. I pour water on the filters, and it struck me. One of the filters was letting the water out faster than the other one. Sure enough, the fish smelling water came from the filter that lets the water out quicker. I tested the water from both filters and the slow letting filter read 3, but the water from the fast letting filter read 165. It was obvious to me that due to the irregular rate of filtration, one of the filter became more dirty than the other one. This gotta be the reason why the filter didn''t last as long as I expected.

I''m going to contact Zero water tomorrow and see if they say anything about this issue. I ordered another set of filters through Amazon, but for mean while, I closed off one of the filter holes so that only one filter is doing all the work.

I''m going to have to down grade this water system to 3 stars. :(

Update: 8/19/10

New filters have arrived, so I replace the old ones. The fish smell is so bad, it seems to eminate from everything that came in contact with the water. I left the filters in my garage, and even the whole garage is filled with the smell. I thought about recycling the filters and receive $5 credit, but if it''ll cost me $10 to send them, I would be losing even more money, while Zero Water co. just needs to replace the stuff inside.

I haven''t contacted the customer service, since I can''t imagine they would do anything for me. I should try anyways.

Update: 10/9/10

The filters changed again on 9/10/10 and now I have to change the filter again. This morning, I noticed a slight funky taste, and tested the water and it was at 85. The filter is lasting constantly about 4 to 5 weeks for us. The Zero water website does say that "customers with tap water near 200 TDS tell us that one filter will treat about 30 gallons of water before seeing a reading of 006 on their TDS meter." Our city water, Fullerton, Ca., reads at about 380. So I don''t think I''m doing anything wrong. The FILTERS JUST DO NOT LAST LONG, if your tap water has high TDS number, do not get this system.

I''m sort of stuck with this now, after investing over $120, since July. BUT IF YOU HAVEN''T BOUGHT THIS SYSTEM, PLEASE CHECK YOUR TAP WATER TDS LEVEL FIRST! If it''s higher than 200, I suggest you look for a different filtration system.

Update: 12/13/10

Since the October, I noticed couple of differences. The filters look different. The packaging was a bit different, and the filter has "Zero water" written on the side. Pretty cool. Another, more important difference is that fishy smell is almost non existence. Instead, there''s strong acidic taste, that lets me know to check the TDS level. I''m not sure if the cooler weather has lessen the development of smell, or they changed something in the filter.

SO IF YOU WANT TO TRY A FILTRATION SYSTEM, BUY THIS AND CHECK YOUR TAP WATER. IF YOUR WATER LEVEL COMES OUT OVER 200, RETURN IT!!!

I''ve had it folks. After 2 years of cleaning and changing filters every month, and after dozens of filters, I can''t stand to use this system anymore. And I''m lowering the rating to 1 star

Here are my reasons:

1. THE RECYCLING SYSTEM IS A JOKE! It costs so much to send the used filters, and the coupons they send you are basically useless. Yes, we''re helping the environment by recycling, but we''re also helping the company make bigger profits by returning the used filters to them OUT OF OUR POCKETS!

2. More I thought about it, more it got me to think that the funny smell/taste the water produce at the end of filters'' life is something the company "designed" so that the consumer will HAVE TO change the filter. During the last 2 years, I have become very cynical about this company''s practice.

3. I''m tired of worry about my filter supply. Yes, I used to order in bulk, but once it runs out, you have to spend another couple of hundred dollars to order, and if you don''t have new filters in your supply, you have to drink tab water until you get new filters! I have bigger things to worry about than how many water filters I have in my garage!!!

So, in closing, I decided to go with the under-sink system. It cost me $130 to purchase and took me 30 minutes to install (Aquasana). Filters cost about $50/6 months (I used to spend 2 filters/month with Zero water. At cheapest, 12 bucks a pop, so that''d be $24/month!). Granted the water doesn''t taste as good as Zero water, I don''t have to worry about the water quality, filter life, or the hassle of changing filters/cleaning the system. Finally, I do not trust this company and refuse to give them any more business.

Installation of the filter was very easy. All I needed other than the items supplied was some teflon tape. I did however, install a threeway that I purchased at home depot on my water line so that I did not have to use the line piercing tap that is supplied because my water lines have a layer of braided stainless steel on the outside. I installed the filter under my bathroom sink as this filter is for a hydroponic garden and salt water fish tank. This way there is plenty of water to wash away waste and hopefully prolong the life of the RO filter. Filter produces 0 PPM water at 6.1 PH from my tap water that is normally around 400-500 PPM at well over 7 PH. Very happy with this product and would reccommend it to others. Only issue I had was with the shipping of the product, I was very upset it took over a week for my filter to leave the manufactuerer. However, it arrived only three days after leaving the manufacturer and well within the estimated delivery date.

We bought one of these for our home and liked it so much I got another for my office. It is a quick safe way to boil water. It works much better than our teapot on our conventional stove and you can leave the room without worry about all the water boiling out and a possible fire.

It is so efficient that we often use it to heat up water before putting it in a pan on the stove. It is much faster. When we are making pasta we will put a small amount of water in a large pan and fill the teapot. The water in the pot is boiling before the water on the stove. The pot is light, even when full, and has no aftertaste like I have read some of the plastic ones do.

HOWEVER, we had owned our home pot for less than six months when the ''on'' switch broke off. The pot was still usable, but you have to reach in and activate it with a fingernail. It was under limited warranty, but that involved mailing it to San Diego at our own cost and sending them a check for $8 to have it returned. Including the time and materials to package it up and then drive to the post office and have it gone for 2-4 weeks wasn''t worth the effort.

I have concluded we just got a lemon. Because this happened and the warranty policy was so cumbersome, I originally gave this 3 stars. But our other one is working fine and the broken piece has turned out to be a small inconvenience, so I have revised my rating to 4.6, rounding up to 5.

It''s not often that one finds a product that''s both visually attractive AND functionally satisfying. This kettle is one of those rare items: the shiny stainless steel body is beautiful to look at, and it boils water very very quickly! It features a nice big and sturdy handle which is very comfortable, and the spout is perfectly designed so that you''d have to be a real klutz to spill things. The cordless feature is wonderful, I tried a cheap ten dollar "Hot Pot" for a day or two and hated having to deal with the cord, plus that model doesn''t have automatic shutoff despite what it says on the box---huge fire hazard! There is also a power-indicator light and water-level indicator gauge which are both handy, and I like that there is no exposed heating element inside which would be a pain to clean. Instead it''s all smooth clean lines, inside and out!

Sure the outside of the kettle does get a little hot so you probably don''t want to have this within reach of toddlers or anything, but if your toddlers can get up on your kitchen countertop then you have a LOT of other problems as well! I appreciated not having to deal with how plastic inevitably gets dirty-looking and sometimes leaves a funny taste in the water.

My only slight concern is that the lid needs a little bit of force to shut completely...probably some kind of insulating seal that shortens the time needed to bring water to a boil, but makes me wonder how durable that part of this kettle is going to be. Oh well, will find out in a few months or (hopefully) years, I suppose!

*UPDATED 2/14/2011: Still going strong, no complaints at all. I use it at least twice a day, most days. The lid has held up well. Highly recommend!

The boil time is very fast and there is no coil on the inside so I do not have to worry about the build-up or rust I have experienced with other kettles. The water tastes good and clean. For this price it is very affordable! I do have to admit that the pot seems a little cheaply made, but I didn''t expect much since it seems to be less than half the price of others of the same volume and style. I am very happy with this!!

I bought it last month and used it over one month now. Heat quickly, looks good on the counter, easy to use and cheap.

The big problem for me is it failed to shut itself off about 10% of times, with the lid closed completely, even minutes after water boiled and the plastic handle became too hot to hold. I have to stay nearby when I using it, otherwise it could be dangerous. I contacted Aroma service people today, they told me that I can send back to repair, but I need to pay the shipping cost by myself. For a 30 dollar stuff, it is not worth it. Kind of disappointed.

I use it over two years now, almost every day. I feel good about this product now. It did fail to shut itself off around 10% of times in the first month. But it is OK after that. I guess it maybe caused by the built up water stain near the edge of cover. It made the cover close tighter to trigger the detector. I change the rate to 4 stars from 1 star. Feel surprised that this kettle last pretty long.

Whether for tea or or hot oatmeal, this water kettle has performed perfectly. Before I purchased this I tended to use the microwave to heat water. Can''t believe what a waste of time and energy that was, not to mention possibly unhealthy. This kettle is even faster than your stove top.

The interior is about 98% metal except for a very tiny amount of plastic. I didn''t taste anything bad regardless and my sense of smell/taste is fairly strong.

My only concern is that the instructions clearly say to unplug the kettle when not in use. There''s an auto shut-off after the water is boiled so either the manufacturer is being extra extra cautious or they believe there could be a problem. Would prefer to just leave it plugged in and not worry about it, but I follow the directions.

A great buy overall have owned it for months now without a problem.

We bought two of these in fall 06. After two months use, one of the units had a fan failure. It ran noisily for a few days prior to the failure, then ground to a halt. I called Kaz''s customer service (the Honeywell name is licensed), and they agreed to send me a new one free. After five months use, the second unit failed in exactly the same way. This time, customer service required me to pay $20 for a new one to be shipped, and they required in each case the return of the defective one at my cost for shipping. They are simply NOT durable! We now have one in service, with the other as a backup since we anticipate a product failure this winter. One other thing: they are awkward to fill. The water chamber has a curved bottom so it will not sit flat in your sink. You have to balance it with one hand, and operate the faucet and put on the lid with the other. This design defect is SO obvious it makes you wonder how function followed form in product design. You also need a fairly deep sink or a tall spigot to fill it without tipping it and spilling. The filling problem is aggravating since you need to fill it at least twice daily. As far as ability to humidify, it works reasonably well, and is fairly quiet. But I wouldn''t recommend this unit at all after living with it.

When I first started looking for a humidifier (my wife''s asthma tended to flare up in coughing fits when the humidity dropped), I realized that there seemed to be no such thing as a "perfect humidifier"! After reading through as many reviews as possible, I realized that I wanted one that needed minimal cleaning, was pretty easy to fill, wasn''t too loud and did a job of raising the humidity for a fairly large area (about 1200 sq.ft) without leading to other side effects (micro dust, mold and bacteria proliferation etc.). After ruling out "warm mist humidifiers" due to the heavy cleaning needs, "ultrasonic humidifiers" due to the micro dust generation, and "in line humidifiers" due to the intensive upfront installation labor requirements, I settled on the "cool mist" HCM-300T. It promised quiet operation, cleaning needs of only once a month (the UV light is supposed to reduce 99% of bacteria growth) and the capability to humidify "medium to large" areas as for the filling, I had come to the conclusion that no portable humidifier would help that daily chore!

The HCM-300T worked pretty well for the first 3 weeks wife loved it since her sleep was much better, without any coughing whatsoever. However, given the absence of a built-in hygrometer, I could never figure out exactly how much of the work was being done by the HCM and how much by Mother Nature. Also, filling the water container every night turned out to be quite the juggling experience since it hasn''t been designed to stand upright on its own ....in other words, you are going to have to be standing right beside it, holding it in position! On the positive side, the water seemed to stay fresh without any mold/bacteria, even though I didn''t engage in any cleaning during the 3 weeks. However, during Week 4, while carrying the water container back after a refill, the lid came off (unfortunately it has been designed such that the handle of the water container is on the lid!) and the container fell down into the tub with a thud, waking up my worried wife! On further inspection, I didn''t notice any leaks, so having reassured my wife that I hadn''t broken any bones, I refilled the container, gingerly carrying it back to the base unit. To my dismay, when the unit was switched on, water started spraying out of the bottom of the unit through the slots that normally cool moist air flows through and soon I had water all over the carpeting. Not sure whether this was triggered by the fall, but the water leakage never stopped from then on. Needless to say I had to return the unit!!

Based on this experience, I have added three more items to my "must-have" list: a built in hygrometer (that way I can actually judge performance on those really dry days), a rugged water container (so it can outlast the tumbles that I am certain it will be taking!) and a unit that has its air outflow from the top rather than the bottom, making sure that water doesn''t leak out due to gravity. Wish me luck!!

The only positive thing I can say about this humidifier is that it looks better than those big boxy ones. Oh, and I guess the fact that ours hasn''t leaked on the floor (like some other reviewers have had) could be considered a positive. It usually doesn''t even last a whole night before running out of water and it''s not like I live in the desert...our house can''t be THAT dry. Yet, the room is still dry and we still wake up with sore throats and dry skin. We''ve had other humidifiers that worked fine, and I''m noticing that those usually shot the humidified air out the top (you know...into the air!). This one shoots the humidified air out near the floor, so it would take 3 days for the room to fill with humid air. The thing rarely shuts off unless the outside air is more humid on that particular day. Speaking of shutting off...doesn''t this thing have an automatic shut off when it runs out of water?? Ours NEVER shuts off, so when it runs out of water the fan dries up the filter (which you aren''t supposed to do). So every night I have to refill the tank and re-soak the filter (which you''re also not supposed to do, but I''m not putting in a new $10 filter every night). We haven''t been bothered by the noise...it''s what you''d expect from any other fan. It''s just a constant hum that we kind of like since it drowns out other outside noises.

We have tried 10+ humidifiers and nothing could compete with this, even a $200+ humidifier. Considering how much better the house feels it was worth every penny plus more.

After reading the previous reviewer''s comments I was quite surprised. This humidifier changed the humidity in my entire 1 bedroom apartment from 48% to 60% in less than 1 hour. It only uses 1/2 of the tank of water over a 15-hr period. I didn''t experience a browning tank or filter, although I filled the tank with filtered water purposefully so it wouldn''t have to be cleaned as often. I hardly notice it when it cycles on because it is so quiet. It does cycle on and off but usually stays on for about 60-90 min and then off for the same amount of time. Perhaps the last reviewer didn''t notice a change in humidity because his room was already at 60% this is the upper limit the humidifier can reach according to the manufacturer. There are no wet spots on my floor, no condensation on the windows, and no white dust from metals in the water vapor. The only thing I was a little disappointed about is that if the fan is facing you, it can make you a little chilly, but not enough to really bother me. It was very easy to set up, and I love that it doesn''t look like an awkward box sitting in the middle of the room. Would definitely recommend it without reservation.

Took awhile to convince my husband this was a good thing. Now he''s totally sold and our poor little "regular" coffee maker is feeling neglected. Whatever Keurig you choose, be sure to get the My K-Cup so you can use any type of coffee you wish. This is the thing that sold us on the unit. The K-cups are fairly expensive themselves, but the fact that I can still buy my own gourmet, locally roasted coffee and grind perfectly to use in my Keurig has me tickled pink.

We purchased one which came with an assortment of 60 K-cups as well as the My K-cup unit. Really enjoying trying the different flavors that came with the unit. When using the My K-cup, it took a few tries to get the right grind, but once you find that with your grinder, you''re all set. I saw several comments by others that the coffee was very weak, and found the following Amazon reviewer''s suggestions very helpful: Perhaps not the greatest solution long term, but until Keurig can fix the design flaw of the My K-cup, it''ll do.

I just got this machine & my Coffee tasted burnt. My water temp was at the higest setting 192. I thought that temp my be too high,so I set it to lowest setting of 187 & my coffee is perfect & still hot enough for plenty of half & half. The burnt taste is gone. This setting may differ in all machines,so if your getting a burnt taste with your machine,try different temp settings. You just got to find your "Sweet spot" :)

This is PERFECT if you are an everyday or even casual coffee drinker. I love to make cold coffee with it. I got a huge assortment of the keurig cups and have been using them a few times a week. Every flavor I have tried so far has been good. The coffee maker itself works flawlessly. My only complaint is that it''s sort of hit or miss on how good the coffee will taste when you go to the larger cup sizes. I like to brew the normal size first then re-brew and see if it still holds flavor.

Also, I don''t like how expensive the cups are. While, I have a lot of cups right now, I have a feeling if I used this more frequently I''d be spending way more money. I do have the my k-cup so I will probably end up using that.

I rated this 5 stars because the coffee maker itself is great. Works great, I love how I can fill it up with a lot of water and make a few cups any time I want. Very easy to use. It came with 60 k-cups and while they aren''t the more desired flavors (to me), they are still good to get a feel for the coffee maker with.

This is a great machine but only when it''s working properly. I''ve had to return two units to the store I bought them from (luckily they (starts with "C" and ends with "ostco") have a GREAT return policy). The two units eventually stopped working right and couldn''t pump out the water or the right amount of water... and yes, I did try descaling them. The last one that I just returned today was descaled TWICE to try to get it back into working order, and each time I went much further than the descaling instructions called for... not only that, I always used filtered water to begin with.

Even the new one I replaced it with seems like it is not working perfectly as it still seems to struggle to get the water out or get the right amount of water out. We''ll see... I''ll give it 6-9 months of life before I probably have to return it too.

So I only feel comfortable giving this unit 2 stars because of the reliability problems I''ve had with them.

It''s interesting to note too, that although it''s the same model ("B70"), they''ve made some "improvements" in the versions I''ve had... like supporting an additional cup size (added when I returned my 1st unit) and now a bigger water reservoir but they still call it the "B70". I''m not sure if I like the bigger reservoir as it seems a bit large, taking up more space, but I do like its new lid design where the front of the lid flips open so you can easily add water and then flip it back closed. Now if only they could improve the reliability.

UPDATE 2013-03-14: The unit I''ve been using for the past few months is still WORKING! At this point, I''d normally have run into problems and had to return it, but perhaps they finally fixed this issue. The unit has basically been trouble-free and I have not experienced "short cups".

I''ve used Mr clean & Dollar General brand Magic Erasers for years now, and they both work better than any other cleaning product I''ve used (liquids that is). No noticble difference b/w the 2, except price. You can use these up quickly though, beware, and I also suggest wiping your surface with a wet cloth after since sometimes it leaves, well, a weird residue behind. HOWEVER that doesn''t change the fact that it cleans up after my very messy 3 kids & dogs on wood handrails & floors, painted walls & baseboards, tub. And I mean the kind of dirt grime that you never really notice on your stuff until you clean it, then you see how filthy it was. Truly a miracle product.
