Halleluia! When my Bissell Steam Mop finally ''died'' and I found out they didn''t make them anymore I was devastated. The only place I found to buy them was ebay at a whopping $250! Anyway, I searched online for other models and read all their reviews. None of the reviews for other products sounded any where near the quality and hard work of my old Bissell. I saw this model (The Steamboy) and it looked similar to the Bissell, however nobody had written a review, so I was a little skeptical.

I''m here to tell ya this product is as good or, dare I say, even better than the Bissell for several reasons: 1. it is lighter weight (but not flimsy) so my arms don''t get tired 2. the head pivots easier and it is triangular in shape so it gets into the nasty corners under my kitchen counters and behind my toilets even better 3. the pads are easier to put on than the Bissell and the draw string to tighten them on is longer and therefore easier to work with and lastly 4. it has a carry handle and doesn''t fall over when standing upright as my old Bissell did. Cons are 1. you have to make sure that the tank is all the way in or it is a little drippy 2. the cord could be longer, but I can''t remember the Bissell''s being any longer than this one.

So, if you want to replace your Bissell or give one as a gift this is definately an affordable option. If you''ve never used a steam mop, you will be amazed and disgusted by how clean your floors get and realize how dirty they REALLY were all those years when you used the ol'' mop and bucket. This is faster too and requires no chemicals to clean!

I live in a neighborhood where EVERY home is "green built certified" this means that, to have that certification, the builder built no homes with carpet. All the main floors are polished concrete and the upper floors wood. The bathrooms all have tile and/or slate in every home.

Because of this, as you could imagine, steam mops are quite the neccessity...not only because they get the hard surfaces better than anything else, but because they are also "green" and clean chemical free. I''ll be honest, for us...that''s a bonus but we weren''t cleaning chemical free before. We like chemical free for our pet''s paws but I''ll confess I was mopping with chemicals before I got my steamer and just kept the pets out of the room while doing it because, up until then, I couldn''t get it clean any other way.

Okay, so that said...we decided to have a steamer show down to compare 7 different steamers because my friends and I knew as long as we are in these homes we are gonna have to have a steamer to get all these hard floors clean...we may as well figure out which one to buy next go round. Because my own home is graced with 2 cats, 3 dogs, and two gregarious cooks, my kitchen floor (which had not ever been cleaned by a steamer since my steamer had just arrived) was the testing spot.

Mind you, I vaccuum twice per week and do a mega mop twice a week. I THOUGHT I had pretty clean floors in spite of my pet capacity.

I thought wrong. These picked up dirt so well it''s scary

So here''s the results:

1. steam mops are the mac daddys of clean floors. What these things picked up was tremendous and no comparison to my vigorous prior constant major mopping.

2. So now I''ll break down the elements of each mop we used and then go into more detail about each at the end.

We tried out:

STEAM TEMPERATURE: this is a primary element. The hotter the steam, the more dirt picked up and hot steam will also kill parasites, mold and mildew and loosen more dirt:

S 110 degrees. lame

E 220 degrees. very hot

H 212 degrees. very hot

M 266 degrees. hottest...although the envirosteamer and haan seemed plenty hot enough. The shark didn''t clean nearly as well and this was one reason. 110 degrees just isn''t going to melt off stuck on grime.

B 125 degrees. Note that, because of this low steam temperature the manual said that if I wanted to sanitize the floor or pick up caked on spills, I had to hold the steamer on the spot for 15 seconds but no more than 20 because that could damage some floors. Now I don''t know about you, but if I can sanitize with one swipe of the other steamers because of their sanitizing temps my floor will be done WAY faster but I don''t have a timer to worry about the extra 5 secons where my wood floors could get damaged. My sink water is hotter than this so it would take less time to use a regular mop if I have to hold the steamer on every spot of my floor for 15 seconds to santize. Just sayin

SF: 137 degrees. Not hot enough to clean well nor sanitize.

SB: 120 degrees. Not hot enough to clean well nor sanitize

BUILD:

We found how it was made corresponded with issues with the steamer. The Shark, for example, was quite flimsy and they actually sell replacement handle kits because so many people have issues with the handle breaking! We know this because my neighbor''s shark broke and the store had a replacement handle kit on the shelf because he said "it happens often". That''s an extra cost.

Envirosteamer: Was 5.4 lbs which made it lightweight but strong enough that you didn''t have to press down to clean. Very well made and strong parts

Haan: not made as well as the envirosteamer but it''s more expensive so this was a surprise. A bit flimsy and you need to press down on it more to clean at 3.15 lbs.

Monster: hefty and well made at 9 lbs but a bit too heavy unless you want a good workout. (Note: They have changed the Monster handles on the mops now and they are all plastic and people are having breakage issues)

Bissell: It''s 8.4 pounds but that includes a water filter that you have to get for this one (see notes below)

SteamFast: very flimsy plastic all over, but it''s also more affordable than the other mops so it''s a bit of a trade off. 7 lbs.

SteamBoy: They didn''t even ship this preassembled like the other mops. We had to assemble it! Pretty flimsy plastic. 9 lbs but that includes the water filter you have to get with this one (see notes below) This is the only mop I''ve ever seen that only has ONE jet.

WATER CAPACITY: Very important because having to stop and add more water just adds on to the time you have to spend cleaning, especially if you are cleaning a hallway or livingroom or some other area that has no sink:

S: only holds 10 oz of water. Lasted for 10 miinutes of cleaning

E: holds 20 oz. of water. Lasted for over 20 minutes of cleaning (we stopped at 20 and it was still going)

H: holds 11.83 oz of water. Lasted for 13 minutes of cleaning

M: holds 17 oz. of water. Lasted for 15 minutes of cleaning

B: holds 13 oz of water, lasted for 12.5 minutes of cleaning AND you have to undo and remove the tank from the machine every time you fill it up then hook it back on and the steam tank is on the handle rather than the base so the steam doesn''t flow directly out after heating up which may explain why it''s not as hot once it leaves the machine. The way this mop is made the water flows past heating elements which can, according to Bissell, develop calcium deposits on it so this is the only mop where, because of this, you also have to use a water filter with it and replace the water filter when there is build up which means and extra 12 bucks every few months. The better mops are made to heat the water in a metal tank so this is not an issue and you pour the water directly into the tank.

SF: Holds the least amount of water and I had to stop and fill up and get the water reheated often in trying to clean the floor. Only holds 8 oz of water and if you use 8 oz it gets your floor too wet so we wound up filling it with just 7.5 oz of water for best results and it only lasted 7 minutes when we did that before we had to refill again.

SB: 24 oz BUT it only lasted for 12 minutes of cleaning. I think because of the build. This one also is made so that the water has to flow past heating elements down the handle, rather than flowing directly from a hot tank to the floor at the base. Because of this it can develop calcium deposits inside the mop so you have to also buy a water filter for this mop and replace it every few months when there is build up which means extra cost and, quite possibly, more repairs. Because this does not flow directly out of a hot tank it cools on the way down and possibly with this one evaporates somehow because we tried it twice and the steam simply didn''t last as long as it should.

STEAM HOLES: We found a difference although you''d think they''d all be the same. The shark and the SteamBoy only had one hole that the steam came out of so it wasn''t cleaning things on the edges, just in ONE small spot in spite of the size of the mop head! All the others had steam coming from all over the bottom and sides. (the others has approx 12 steam jets.)

SIZE: The taller it is the less stooping, the wider the mop head, the more it covers

E: 50"Hx13.25"Wx6.75"D (the fact that this depth was smaller made it reach under applicances better...it fit better under things)

Conclusion of comparison: First it must be pointed out that, in order to use the shark and the Bissell and the SteamBoy, you had to keep pumping the water. This was the most annoying feature of anything...the others just steamed on their own and didn''t wear out your fingers. Hated this feature of the shark and Bissell and SteamBoy. We liked that the Monster, the Shark, the Envirosteamer, the SteamFast and the Bissell came with 2 cleaning pads rather than one. The Haan only came with one at the time of the review (I double checked since when she bought hers it was also only one and as of today, that hasn''t changed) so that ups the price even more because I can''t imagine only wanting one to clean. All worked well on sanitizing mattresses and showers. too.

But the winner picked by all of us unanimously as the mop we want to have for our next steam mop order?

The Eureka Envirosteamer. It picked up the most dirt, was made as well as the Monster but was less expensive, held the most water, emitted the most very hot steam so it sanitized as well, lasted 3 times as long with one water resevor fillup as the others, and had a cord as long as the monster. BUT if you have carpets than I would recommend the Monster because it has a carpet attachment that allows you to steam clean your carpets and it picked up pretty close to the same amount of dirt as the Eureka Envirosteamer, and had close to the same features...a bit heavier though but that may make it last even longer. It is costlier, but to clean 2 surfaces I would think that might make it worth it. It should be noted that the SteamBoy took almost twice as long to heat up initially compared to the other mops.

UPDATE: The Haan just started including 2 pads with the mop according to the product description page. Not that this changes our opinion since it didn''t work as well and the parts were flimsier, but it should be noted that this issue of not having enough cleaning pads has now been resolved and is equal to the other mops.

ANOTHER UPDATE: 1. The Shark came out with a new machine that holds more water and has a longer cord BUT it still only heats the water to 110 degrees so it won''t sanitize or get rid of trapped grime at this "bathwater" temperature.

Another update: I haven''t tried it yet but was told about an even better mop than the Eureka Envirosteamer but I can''t personally afford it...still, it''s worth mentioning in case you can. It''s called the Ladybug XL2300 and is a canister steam mop. It heats the water to 298 degrees (woah!) so it''s a super sanitizer but it''s over a thousand bucks. It also comes with 6 towels. I didn''t include it in my review because I haven''t ever tried it and I wanted to only include mops I personally tried but it''s got great enough stats that, even though it''s out of my price range, I thought I''d pass it on as a super sanitizer.

Also: Don''t spend money buying extra pads for the Eureka. I was in a pinch and used a kitchen dish towel...the rectangular kind...just clip on both ends. It worked just as good or better...because they are thinner so the steam penetrates faster and therefore reaches the floor hotter. However, I would recommend still only using the thick pads that come with it for your wood floors just to be safe. But the super hot steam penetrating the dish towel worked excellent on tile and hard floors. Also, you can flip both the towel and the pads that come with it on the Eureka to double the usage...when it gets dirty, just flip it over and use the other side. I use several old dish towels with this but I like best the kind that just have a bit of texture but no squares sewn on them...but they all work great. So do the pads.

I had very high hopes for this product and I have been very disapointed.

I could achieve similar results by pouring out a bucket of hot water on my floor and wrapping towels around my feet to move the water around. I can only assume that something is not functioning correctly and there is too much water too fast. The "tank" is supposed to last 20 minutes (according to the instruction book 30 min according to the Reliable website) mine was empty within 10. In addition, there was more steam coming out of the swivel head connection than the bottom of the mop.

I read the assembly instructions carefully and I am confident that it was assembled properly (even let my husband double check! ;-))

The short troubleshooting guide mentions nothing about my two issues 1) too much water on the floor 2) steam coming from the swivel head more than the floor

I contacted Reliables technical support group and received a call back telling me that I should not be holding down the trigger continuously but just hold it until the steam starts and then stop and hit it again when I need more steam. While this definitely cut down on the water I fail to see how this can be classified as a steam cleaning of the floor. As soon as I release the trigger the steam stops. So, instead of steam cleaning my floor, I get a burst of steam followed by wiping the floor with a damp, hot cloth. I hit the trigger again, burst of steam, let go, steam immediately stops, push the floor mop around hoping that the damp, hot cloth is actually doing anything to effectively clean my kitchen floor let alone "Sanitizing"

The description on the website says " 30 minutes CONTINUOUS steam"

The instruction manual mentions nothing about clicking the trigger on until steam starts and then letting go. It says to hold down the trigger over the area you want clean I assume this means continuously as I would like my entire kitchen floor clean!

I contacted the technical support again explaining that I was still unhappy and either wanted verification that my unit is defective and be sent a replacement or if it is working properly to send me instructions on how to get a refund. It has been almost two weeks and have not heard back anything. I just resent the email to their customer service department and hope to get an acceptable solution to this.

I noticed in the forums that there have been other customers who also had "leak" issues. I THINK mine is defective but I cannot recommend this product in any way given how it has performed as well as the lack of quality, fast customer service and resolution to product problems.

If I am told by Reliable that my unit is defective and I am sent one that performs better, I would gladly update this review.

This is the first time I have ever written a product review I must be pretty "steamed" ;-)

I am very pleased with the Reliable Steam Mop: it leaves the floor immaculate, it gets up hardened messes that would have required scraping before, it gets in small, convoluted spaces, it is very light-weight, the water reservoir is big enough to do a lot of floor, the mop-head cover is very easy to use and to wash, it uses tap water or distilled water. Now my suggestions for improvement: first and foremost, there should be an on-off switch in the handle; and second, the cord could definitely use another ten feet. Also, not really a complaint, but good to know, it does leave quite a bit of water on the floor, so it takes a while to dry. I turn on the ceiling fans, and that helps a lot. I would recommend this product!

The Steamboy Floor Mop did not disappoint. I have a high gloss, white tile floor in the kitchen, dining room, and hallway. When cooking, the tiniest of greasy splatters would smudge-track everywhere. These filters are a bit more expensive but they last longer. The chlorine taste is gone and my last filter lasted almost 3 years and was still working....even though it is recommended to change the filter every 3 months. Eva Solo Cafe Solo Coffee Maker Save 11% Off

This is a great product for those who want to brew the smoothest, most flavorful coffee possible! But I think perhaps some people don''t want to deal with choices in how they prepare their coffee and would rather have the convenience of automation (and pre-packaged blandness)--in which case the CafeSolo, while fairly simple to use, may not be for them.

Better Than...

I started out with a drip coffee maker. After years of making sometimes bitter, sometimes thin, but never great tasting coffee, I looked into Chemex. I was still not satisfied with the pleasant but weak brew that resulted. Finally, I read a rave review of the Eva Solo product on a coffee specialist site. The reviewer (an editor for the site) said he found the CafeSolo to produce a better full-bodied brew than either a French press or a vacuum pot, partly because it controls the temperature so well. I like the idea of a full immersion brewing system, so I bought it and immediately produced a very strong cup of the most bitter-free coffee I''ve ever tasted. I never drink coffee black, yet I was able to drink the result without adding sugar, and still found no bitterness!

The CafeSolo is better than a French press in two other ways. The conical mesh filter is ideally shaped to prevent blockage (the grounds sit outside the inverted cone when you pour), yet has very fine holes. So you can use a finer grind than you would for a French press and won''t get any mud in your cup or problems pouring through the filter. As others have mentioned, the pourer and lid are of excellent design. But I said the CafeSolo was better in two other ways. The last reason has to do with the perils of complete extraction.

The Problem with Complete Extraction

"What''s wrong with complete extraction?" you ask. The grounds get maximum saturation, so you get the most flavor, right? Yes, and that is why the CafeSolo, or a French press, or an espresso machine will yield a more concentrated brew. But there is a price for all that, in the risk of over-extracted bitterness. If you look at how coffee tasters do a cupping, they pour boiled water into a cup of grounds, let it steep for 1-2 minutes, then gently stir and push the crust of floating grounds to the bottom while taking in the aroma, and lastly remove the remaining floating bits. Then they let the brew continue to steep and cool for another 1-2 minutes before they take their first sip. They will also repeat this tasting as it cools further. During this time, they don''t stir the grounds again. That extra agitation at the end of the brewing cycle must be avoided.

Now in an espresso machine, the parameters of temperature, pressure, size of grind, and time of extraction are carefully controlled to minimize over-extraction during the very intense brewing cycle of 20-30 seconds. But during the longer 4 minute steep time of the CafeSolo or a French press, there will be an unavoidable build-up of bitter liquid and over-extracted fine particles in the grounds. With the French press, the act of pushing the plunger down forces liquid through the grounds, flushing the concentrated bitterness and fine particles into the rest of the liquid. The CafeSolo does not have a plunger. The carafe is tilted for pouring and the floating grounds settle under the inverted cone-shaped filter. The liquid flows over the grounds and through the wire mesh, as opposed to being forced through the grounds in order to exit the carafe. As some baristas have reported, the result is the closest thing to an actual cupping, only cleaner. It''s for this reason that the CafeSolo tends to be very forgiving, yielding the least bitterness and the most flavor.

The Way of Coffee

Coffee making is an art. If you want a truly outstanding result, you have to refine your technique:

1) I found that I couldn''t control the extraction consistently. Also my grounds would have too much fine powder. So I stopped using a blade grinder and bought a KitchenAid Pro Line burr grinder--that solved the problem. (The KitchenAid also does a great job of controlling static explosions of coffee grounds.)

2) I was not happy with the coffee beans. My coffee seemed to be lacking in rich flavor, and dark roasts seemed to have just one flavor: burnt. I stopped buying the stale beans from the supermarket and the over-roasted beans from the popular coffee houses. I tried internet suppliers (2-3 weeks since roast). For the first time, I could taste the flavor profile they described. Eventually I found a local roaster (1-4 days since roast), and my coffee has never been so rich and flavorful (both light and dark).

3) After switching to better coffee, I found that minute changes in the grind and amount greatly affected the result. I was able to fine-tune the setting on my grinder to my liking (I now use a setting somewhere between drip and French press). And I bought a small narrow glass container with markings on the side to measure the grounds. I use approx. 10 tbsp., but YMMV--the actual amount is somewhere between 9 and 10 level tbsp., depending on how careful you are (also note that I like a strong cup with sugar and arf ''n'' arf). The measuring jar allows me to get a consistent amount without the tedium of measuring out one tbsp. at a time and still getting it wrong. Recently, I discovered it has one other benefit. Because I transfer the grounds from the KitchenAid''s catcher jar to my measuring jar using a scoop, I noticed that most of the fine powder was left behind. This will contribute to a cleaner and less bitter cup.

***** Addendum 9/2/2011 I have since upgraded to an even better grinder--the Baratza Virtuoso Preciso. That, in combination with a fine powder separator, made a huge difference and stripped away a layer of bitterness I was not even aware of. The coffee now turns out so well that I have had to reduce the amount of sugar I usually add (approx. 1/3 less).

4) Eventually I also came to realize that darker roasted coffees may benefit more from a higher pressure extraction, as you get from an espresso machine. The CafeSolo does bring out the most amazing flavor down to a med-dark roast, but may not be superior for a dark roast. I do get good results from Illy espresso roast, but I think I''ve had better Illy in a restaurant.

Instructions

Ok, now for the mechanics of how I use the product to brew the perfect cup:

1) Boil 1 liter of water and pour into CafeSolo. Top with filter and lid to heat entire aparatus.

2) Boil another 1.25 liters of water. Use fresh, good tasting (filtered or bottled) water. Do not reboil previously boiled water or it will adversely affect flavor.

3) While second batch of water is coming to a boil, grind beans. Just before it boils, transfer water that was heating CafeSolo into a thermal carafe to warm it. Then pour fresh coffee grounds into bottom of CafeSolo.

4) Wait 30-45 seconds after second batch of water boils to let it cool to correct temperature. Set timer for 4 minutes and start it right before pouring water into carafe. Stir down foam while adding water until level is 1 inch below narrowest part on neck of carafe (but wait, there is a better way--see addendum, below). Once foam is stirred down and water level is correct, place filter/lid on top, zip neoprene jacket, and wait for timer to run out.

At first, I was surprised at how fresh roasted and ground coffee reacted when I poured in the hot water. There was a huge bloom of foam and grounds that would have overflowed the carafe if I didn''t start stirring (I''m told fresh roasted coffee can foul some automatic drip machines for this reason). With the CafeSolo, you end up perfecting your pour and stir technique to get the lid on and the jacket zipped before too much heat loss.

***** Addendum 9-2-2011 -I have finally switched to weighing all the ingredients. Of course, that helps to get a more consistent result. But it also helps me to reduce the time it takes to add the water. Because it was taking too long to stir down the foam to the point where I could see the true water level, I decided to reduce the quantities slightly and use the scale reading to know when I had added the right amount of water. For 64 grams of beans, I use 900-930 grams of hot water (your mileage may vary). Now my technique is to zero-out the scale with the CafeSolo and grounds sitting on it, start adding the water until the foam puffs up to the top of the carafe, immediately start the timer, then wait and stir down the foam while adding more water until the scale reads the right amount, and finally put the filter/lid onto the top.

Speaking of heat loss, Coffeegeek mentions that they measured acceptable temperatures using this jacket, whereas a French press would quickly lose 10 degrees or more within just a few minutes. I recall some consumer on a certain cooking site confidently declaring that the temp would drop too much over 4 minutes and the jacket would do no good--all without apparently validating their claims by actually using the product (genius).

5) When timer rings, pour out water from thermal carafe and pour coffee from CafeSolo into thermal carafe. Coffee is ready to drink.

If you leave the coffee in the CafeSolo, the grounds will continue to extract and the brew will begin to taste bitter after another minute (you may not notice the difference if you have too much fine powder in your brew to start with, but after improving my grinding technique, I found that just letting it sit one minute longer would cause what little fine powder remained to contribute a bitter taste to the bottom of the cup). Also, I found that mixing up the liquid by pouring it into another carafe always results in a better tasting cup. This is all relative--that first pour is still better than anything I could produce using other coffee makers.

Cleanup: Place old discarded conical metal coffee filter from now-departed loathsome drip coffee maker into sink drain. Rinse Eva filter and carafe grounds into old filter, drain and shake out into trash can. Wash inside of CafeSolo carafe (and thermal carafe, if you used one) with hot soapy water using a long flexible brush. Use hot soapy water on the mesh filter, too.

Not only does the Cafe Solo look cool, but it makes a great cup of coffee (or two).

It is EXTREMELY easy to use and it does save you time when you need a cup of coffee quickly. The hardest part of making coffee in the Cafe Solo is waiting for the water to boil, via the old stove top, microwave or old drip coffee pot thingy.

I add five tablespoons of coffee and fill the carafe to just below the neck, stir, wait a few minutes (four minutes go by quick when you are busy with your morning routine), no need to watch as the sleeve keeps the coffee warm for up to a half hour anyway. The sleeve looks and feels like a wet suit.

I purchased both the Eva Cafe Solo 0.6L and 1.0L sizes and am really pleased with both. I think the quality of the glass work, filter system, and really functional design is indeed worth the high price.

While most avid coffee drinkers might think of the French press method as one of the best, if not the best, way to brew coffee, in my view the Cafe Solo takes things one step further. The filter screen, which extends down through the neck of the carafe is a very, very fine mesh. Part of the reason I think they can get away with such a fine mesh without clogging is that there is a huge surface area and the coffee tends to flow along the length of the mesh rather than straight at it when poured -just brilliant design here. So, even if you have to resort to using a blade grinder (with its associated inconsistent grind tsk) the fine mesh screen filters very effectively and the amount of fine particles that end up in the coffee is minimal compared to press pots.

The only disadvantage is that, beyond the optimum 4 mintues or so brewing time, the coffee remaining after your first pour does tend to brew a bit more than with the press pot -since the grounds are free flowing in the carafe rather than compressed and trapped at the bottom of the pot. Of course you can always transfer to a thermos, but I don''t since I''ve not found the "overbrewing" difference that significant (though it is noticeable).

The smaller 0.6L Cafe Solo is perfect for a couple of "American-sized" mugs of coffee, while the 1.0L size is great for two people.

Clean up is a breeze -you can just rinse everything with water and perhaps every second or third time give the carafe a cleaning with a bottle brush (French roast coffees in particular leave a bit of film on the glass after a couple of uses).

I don''t find the need to even use the neoprene insulating wrap to keep the coffee warm -but I do drink a couple of cups in fairly quick succession. With the neopreen on, it''s not quite as effective as a thermos but will keep coffee hot for 30 minutes+.

Bottom line -the superior filtering is the key to the Cafe Solo performance... press pot filters in my experience are more coarse and there is always some ''blow by'' as as the plunger descends. Just drink up or pour out into a thermos to prevent overbrewing (and perhaps take the best coffee you''ll ever make, along with you).

The most egregious insult to the buyer: There is a tiny rubber nub used to remove the rubber cover to the wire mesh filter. A few tips:

It''s hard to be sure, but from looking at the interior pieces, they may not be stainless steel like the exterior. The instructions are similar to the aluminum model, to make a first pot of coffee and throw it away and to only rinse for cleaning. This is to coat the interior with coffee oils to prevent a metallic taste. If you do wash it, you''ll need to throw out your first pot of espresso again, because it won''t taste good at all.

It''s important not to pack the espresso grinds so the steam will move properly into the upper chamber. When I packed the grounds, at least half of the water remained in the lower chamber and quite a lot escaped through the release valve and gasket seal.

The grind size is also very importantif it''s too fine, steam shoots out the sides.

There should be a little water left in the chamber after brewing, maybe a tablespoon or so. This is to prevent scorching and discoloration. This means the 4-cup unit makes about 7 oz of espresso, not 8oz. For us, this is enough for two small-ish cappucinos.

It''s also important to use relatively high heat, and to remove the maker from the heat as soon as most of the espresso has moved into the upper chamber (this takes a little practice to figure out, but the upper chamber looks about 2/3 full at this point and it is at about the time the unit starts gurlging). The espresso is more bitter if there is prolonged contact with the grinds.

I do like Illy brand espresso, and you can froth hot milk with a whisk if you look up the Cooks Illustrated directions. It''s basically putting the whisk between hands that are in the same posisiton they''d be in if you had just clapped them, then slide them back and forth in opposite directions (like you would if they were cold).

I was concerned by some of the negative feedback about this item and in fact hesitated to buy it because of some of the reviews about its workmanship and quality, but there is no cause for concern. The craftsmanship of the Bialetti Venus 4-Cup Percolator is in fact superior to all the other Bialetti stovetop percolators I have. I currently own three aluminum models and have owned a total of seven. This one is the best of the lot.

I much prefer this to any of the aluminum models. The coffee it makes tastes better, the pot is easier to clean, and the craftsmanship is superior.

This product uses the standard water bottles but, does not hold but a little over 16 oz. of water at a time. It says in the handbook that if you use 2 cups of water, it will take the machine 25 minutes to get the next 2 cups cold. It doesn''t say that in the description on the item. Product does not have the piercing device that you turn the water bottle upside down on. So I''m not sure how the water is supposed to drain into the very small reservoir. If you have to remove the entire cap from the top of the water bottle, that is very dumb. I will stick with the cooler I have that sets on the floor taking up room.

Because of the needs of our small office I was determined to get a small water cooler/heater and this was the only model I could find.

The 3rd unit seems to be fine (I returned the other two because they were defective and either didn''t heat or didn''t cool the water.

I had to replace 2 valves that were 30 years old and although they didn''t leak you almost needed a wrench to use them. I opted for the 1225. I know it''s plastic but I saw several people say that it was easier to use (pull-push-turn) and didn''t bind up. I suppose it''s dealers choice.

I put the first one in and it leaked. So I installed the second one in the same tub faucet no problem. I purchased a third one from the local hardware and tried in the second bathroom. It also leaked. I reseated it and turned the water on and before I put the clip on I adjusted it. That worked like a champ. I had trouble getting both clips on and off. It would be nice to have a new clip in the package. I recommend turning on the water and making all your adjustments (hot-cold-flow rate) before you put the clip back in. I also hate to say this but I recommend getting the Moen puller. I don''t know if I could have removed the valves without it. The instructions on it were poor. What you are bacically doing with it is screwing the threaded piece in the knob screw hole and then using a pair of channel locks to tighten the outer piece against the valve opening to brute force it out. Kind of like a bering puller.

In most cases I''d recommend replacing the faucet (the cost of the tool and valve comes close to the cost of a new foucet) but these were in the shower and soldered in behind a tiled wall. The pull-out, on/off, hot-cold, knob for the shower in the travel trailer leaked pretty bad. Water conservation is important but especially in a rv/travel trailer when your water supply is limited. The old knob actually pulled off too. During repair, it was determined there was no problem with the knob, but the valve was bad and the retaining clip had broke as well. When using this for your repair make sure your retaining clip is in good condition. It is a separate part, so order it as well if you need it. It is the part that keeps this valve, handle, and everything locked in place, it is a gold U-shaped retaining clip with a little hole in the middle and little protusions on the ends which installs beneath the stop gap (if you search" moen retaining clip" in Amazon you will see it). I highly recommend this part to repair your fixture instead of simply replacing it, replacing it fixed the leak, and the original part was from 1972. I hope it lasts another 30-40 years. The part is not cheap, but I think it is easier to replace it than to replace the whole fixture, especially in hard to reach places with limited access.

I tested this one and it was much better. Then I took it on the trail. The first 2 bags full of water (about 2 gallons) filter pretty quickly it came out of the "valve" at a fast trickle. Then it started slowing down to a slow trickle. Since then, I''ve taken it home and cleaned the pre-filter in the bag and the flow has been mostly restored, the pre-filter did it''s job. The filtered water seemed to be pretty high quality (of course you don''t know without a lab). To fill this bag, I resorted to using a second container that I filled and poured into the bag, it is difficult to fill this bag in a shallow water source.

To avoid crimping hoses etc. you need to diassamble it before fitting it in your pack.

A note of caution, one you hang this bag up, do not put your clean water container directly under it because any water dripping off the bag will get into your container and contaminate your "clean water".

OverallGood for a base camp were you have lots of time to let the gravity filter do it''s job...not so good on hikes where water supplies may be shallow.

Clear2O Filter (3 Pack)

Clear2O makes a decent pitcher, with a few design quirks. However, their filters do a much better job of removing impurities than Pur or Brita could ever hope to, and the taste difference is truly noticeable. The solid block carbon is the secret, but if you are looking for a "crisp" taste rather than a "dull" taste, go for the Brita.

The filters are supposed to be changed after 50 gallons, but I''ve read that the pitcher may show "red" before the 30 gallon point. I can say that Clear2O changed their filters about a year ago to last an extra 10 gallons (I called in about the slight change in filter model numbers). Unfortunately, the pitcher is not modified to accommodate this change, so you just have to run the pitcher until it''s back in the "green" area again if your pitcher is like mine (surely newer ones accommodate this change now).

I''ve found that the filters still seem to filter about the same until after the second full cycle of green-to-red. At that point, the taste starts to get a little different and you run the risk of some sort of bacterial floaters resting on the bottom of the pitcher (at least, if you do as we do and never refrigerate the pitcher). This behavior is probably why the Clear2O site says you should occasionally clean the inside of the pitcher with vinegar, because not doing this assures the bacterial film will eventually appear. If you always refill the pitcher before it ever runs out of water, you can almost assure in time a bacterial film, which can be dislodged by shaking the water around and then looking through the pitcher at a light source. It appears to be harmless, as I found out I''d been drinking the film for awhile.

Why do I put up with the "dull" taste and the potential for a harmless film? Because both the laboratory test results and my tongue tell me there''s almost nothing left but pure water, and that is what I want for tea, coffee, and any other drink I may desire, and we go through a lot of filtered water in my home.

Had the Britta for a while. What I did not like was the fact that the sensor that told you when to change the filter worked on a time basis. Meaning that if you did not use the pitcher, even kept it empty, and a month went by it would tell you it was time to change the filter. On a side note I also discovered that Braun''s Pulsonic Electric Shaver Cleaning Station works on the same principle. Meaning that wether you use these products or not they will announce that a change of parts is in order (Baloney with a capital B). Enter the Clear2O Filter 3-pk. At first I was inconvenienced by the fact that you had to connect the pitcher''s hose to your faucet but once I climbed that hill I very much appreciate the performance, taste and durability. This is a difficult product to rate because the filters seem to do a good job of filtering our drinking water but it''s hard to know when to change them. When we first started using them, we went by the color indicator on the top of the Applica Clear 2O Water Pitcher #CWS100A but it seemed like it turned red very quickly. So I started keeping track of each time we filled it. We use a lot of filtered water in our household (more than I would have thought before I started keeping track) because the tap water has an unpleasant chlorine taste. We use the filtered water for our drinking water, coffee and cooking as well as for the pet''s water dishes, so filling it 6 or 7 times a day isn''t unusual. According to their website and the Amazon product page they are supposed to filter 50 gallons or over 88 pitchers of water. The indicator turned completely red after 45 pitchers.

I kept using the same filter and tasted the water each time, comparing it to the tap water. The filter definitely produced a glass of water that had no chlorine taste, almost like distilled water. We used the same filter until we were up to 85 pitchers full and then changed it. I''ve found that by lifting the used filter out and pushing it back in, you can make the indicator go back to green for another (presumably) 45 pitchers of filtered water. I''m keeping track again this time around and will update this review if that changes. I plan to put a sticker of some sort on top of the pitcher then next time it turns red so I know it''s the second time around and to change it when it turns red again.

So why am I going through all this trouble to stick with this filtration system? Because the water tastes better than any filtered water I''ve tried. We used Brita and Pur filters in the past that didn''t come close. This water tastes neutral, like a distilled water. Coffee and tea made with it tastes better. And the price of the filters is more reasonable than any others I''ve seen advertised and that''s a big factor for me.

Because I bought it at Costco, though, I was able to return it. I have now returned this stupid water filter THREE TIMES and need to return it again.

Installed OK and seemed to work fine for a couple of weeks. I now believe the filter use indicator is not working. This filter replaced another Pur filter that started squirting water from a crack near the filter indicator window (so I know how the filter indicator is supposed to work). I must say the replaced white plastic filter did last 8 years or so. A working filter use indicator would really be nice.

Also, 3-4 weeks into use, the bottom plastic chrome cover just popped off. I knew this would be "plastic" chrome, but it would look better with the faucet than white. Anyway, I should not have gone this cheap. It''s been disappointing. It would probably be better, if you like this kind of filter, to spring for the stainless steel version.

I''m quite dissatisfied with the quality of the tap water where I currently live. It has a bad smell and a significant aftertaste. Therefore, I used to buy gallon-size bottled water to prepare tea or to get fine drinking water.

The plastic adapter screwed into the faucet just fine, but it leaks profusely with water streaming down into the sink, and this happens regardless of the position of the filter switch. After I wrote the manufacturer, in 2 weeks they sent me a set of adapters that were identical to the adapters that were in the original package. I tried a different adapter, with the same results. I returned the entire package to the vendor and got a replacement, with the same leaky results. After complaining to the manufacturer, their only response was that the filter system only fits 90% of the faucets out there, sorry, I must have one it doesn''t fit. Pretty lousy customer service. They certainly don''t stand behind their product.

I would buy the unit again and wanted another unit, but since the company did not answer back my emails when I had questions about an other use for an additional one I did not bother to buy the second one. Make them in several diameters, 3 inch, 3.5 inch, 4 inch, 4.5 inch, 5 inch, etc. etc. Then we''ll know which one is actually the right size. And, Culligan can reap more sales, even if they''re to those folks who own other brands of filters. A rather dumb, overly proprietory practice. I tried two different ones trying to get lucky... NOPE! Sometimes my big blue filters are dang hard to loosen! I was on the verge of breaking my original wrench and

decided to get two more as spares. Tell you what, using two of these together will work much better and are much

stonger than using just one. Sometimes, you just have to have spares or double up and the big blue filters

require such action at times.

Since I''m not the mechanical one in the family, my husband installed this on the 1/4 inch copper water line that runs into our refrigerator. He was pretty happy with this filter and said that it was easy to install. As other Vine reviewers have stated, make sure you understand that this is an in-line filter.

The box directions state that you might need to have a tube cutter or file (for copper tubing) or a utility knife (to cut plastic tubing). You also need to follow the directions for restarting the water and getting the air out of the line before you turn the family loose on the filtered water.

Although some refrigerators with ice makers and water dispensers have built in filters, others do not. Yet they can benefit from one in many ways to enhance taste and remove odors and harmful content. There are cheaper filters out there, and many of them will get water to taste equally pure, but cheaper alternatives will not filter out Cryptosporidium and Giardia Cysts. Chances are that your municipal water supply is processed well enough to take out most harmful substances. But they don''t claim to remove everything, and they do so at the expense of adding a chlorine taste and smell. Among other things, this filter is easy to install. Many earlier filters on the market required adding compression fittings to your water line. The 3M cartridge also lasts 50% longer, so it''s effectively cheaper. For each two you buy, you''d need to buy three if you used the Culligan instead.

Overall, this 3M filter does a lot, is more cost effective than the competition and is easy to replace. But you do need to know what you are doing, although the instructions are simple. You''d probably be able to change the Culligan filter without any instructions and it may save a little but of time in the long run, but those are the only advantages. Given the extra installation effort up front and the more frequent filter changes, the time savings may cancel out. So unless you are handy enough to install the Culligan so a person who is not handy at all can do the filter changes, you might be better off with this 3M filter that you''ll need to change only twice a year or less.

In my experience, since I don''t use enough water or ice in six months to hit the limit, I can go longer without changing a filter without having a change in taste. There are times I''ve forgotten, which is easy to do if you write the date down. This one comes with an indicator with a line that becomes increasingly red like an old fashioned thermometer with a rising temperature. You activate it when you get the filter, but mine was slightly crushed and therefore activated when I got it.

Well unlike other Vine reviewers I knew exactly what this was when I ordered it. We''ve had an inline filter on the water line going to our refrigerator for years, so for us this was just a replacement.

It works OK, installed as easily as any other inline filter (once you cut the line for your first filter, you just slide the input and output segments of the water line into the 2 ends of the replacement filter). If this is the first time you''re installing an inline filter, then yes you do need to cut the water line so you can "splice" this filter into the middle of the line (also I recommend, if your line is copper, replacing the half coming from the wall to the filter, with plastic tubing instead, for more flexibility in positioning and securing the filter; we left the copper for the half going from the filter into the refrigerator).

A downside to this model is that it is smaller than other filters we''ve used in the past, and is only good for 6 months. I think the old filter I just replaced with it was not only twice as large, but also good for 5 years!

Maybe the size doesn''t matter too much, but presumably there''s more carbon etc. filtration material in a larger filter (the older filter listed more contaminants that it treated, compared to this one). I think this one is rated for 700 gallon flow while that older larger longer-lasting one was rated for 650 gallon flow, but I don''t notice any difference in the flow of cold water out of the actual tap on the refrigerator.

So this is a good filter if you are content with the 6-month lifetime and just the most basic list of contaminants that it treats.
