General construction notes: The filter housings are standard 10" with CLEAR caps on all 3 positions (not just the first = dirtiest position) they are screwed to a metal (remember that stuff?) housing to hold the unit together. The tank is a standard RO "bladder" style tank and the membrane is mounted above, horizontally along with the uv lamp and the refrigerator style taste finishing filter which is the last item the water goes to before the faucet / ice maker. I find that this build quality is superior to other RO systems on the market which use subsized filters resulting in faster filter changeouts and or mount the RO membrane vertically after only one filter (this RO membrane sees 3 filters and one pressure boost pump between it and city water which should make the membrane last longer)

at my home, My feedwater is measuring about 300 ppm with the HM Digital DL-1 Dual TDS Meter MTR-TDS-DM1-0-9990-4 With my old funky design RO system I got 200-210 ppm at the output faucet. That''s not alot of reduction for all the drain wastewater. As a point of comparison the "hard" water at my parents'' home is 100 ppm, so mine is 3 times worse than their "hard" water! Previous RO systems gave me about 40 ppm output water. This is a bit more complex as a 6 stage system. I chose it for a few reasons:

1 the clear housings on all 3 filters make it easy to see when any filter needs changing

2 the permeate pump recyles the output (drain) water to more quickly fill the tank, increases tank and membrane pressure, and uses no power.

3 it uses a UV lamp to kill bacteria in the output line if you ever took apart a filter system of any kind you''d like this feature!

4 the nonelectric pump cuts down the time to regenerate. Regeneration time to full pressure is about equal to time that the valve is open running water.

Nitpicks:

The UV lamp is ALWAYS on, making the water in that chamber hotter than the rest. I would replumb it so that the sterilization happens before the storage tank so as to avoid the small slug of hot water that sits all day/night surrounded by the lamp. The lamp is rated for 1gpm flow and 1 year life. I do not see it going any faster than 1gpm so it should be effective, just expect your first water to be warm.

The nonelectric pump is powered by the brine solution and is setup in a rotary manner while most RO systems trickle the brine out the pump squirts large volumes of brine as it pressurizes the storage tank on the other side. You can hear the clicking as each chamber is filled and drained as a result. I might possibly switch to an electric pump that cuts off at some given pressure which would give a continuous flow instead of a burst flow.

Neither of these are significant enough to impair the performance of the system just things to note about the design.

Likes:

This system comes with 3 clear standard size filter chambers, while most all others are sub sized (1/2 the size) white plastic. The result is that you can see how much "junk" from the city water supply is being trapped by the first filter and you can use standard filters not these downsized ones for smaller systems. (mine has a significant accumulation of specs of copper and green stuff after just 2 days / 12 gallons!) I think this will lead to much better filter changes at the right time.

The UV system is made of uv proof plastic with an end piece that lets you know the lamp is working. It''s a smart design, but re-lamping 1x/year means you must buy the same lamp assy which could be difficult. I may re-do the whole UV section in stainless steel when the time comes.

Both of these potential changes are easy since the hoses are standard 1/4" and use the press fit connectors. Just turn off the water and drain the tank first!

Summary -

Taking 300 ppm down to 15 ppm TDS (total disolved solids) is a huge change in the taste of the water. My old system was beginning to taste bad which is why I bought this unit. You can go to 7 stages and get Deionized water, used in the semiconductor industry, which is technically 0.00 TDS and acts as a solvent (i.e. you would not want to drink it but it will sure clean parts for ya.) At 15 ppm the water tastes good, and will not strip out your stomach lining like DI water would, so I advise against 7 stage deionized water systems. I found this system ideal and much better made than other RO units I have used. I expect a longer service life from the clear filterunits so I know when to change them.

I had a plumber install the unit and was very glad that I did because there were some leaks that I would not have known how to fix. He had to trim the ends of the tubing and reinsert them into the fittings because a few of the connections leaked. The ends of the tubing were not cleanly trimmed. Also, the fittings are plastic and you have to be really careful not to overtighten them -which would have been my inclination to fix the leaks. Overall, it is a good RO/UV system for a reasonable price.

Good customer service! Once the unit was hooked up and the first tank of water drained we tried the water and were very happy. We normally get our water from our Cupboard natural foods store but it gets old toting the 5 gallon jugs around. The water tastes just like the water out of the oversized R.O. unit at the cupboard. All parts are made well and I especially like that all the housings are clear. Why shouldn''t you get to see the shape of the filter before removing/ contaminating them?The permeate pump does make some noise and the first half glass of water is a bit warm from sitting under the UV light, but other than that we are 100% happy with the purchase. They also label all the connections to make setup easy. Even the pets love it :p

My wife bought this for me as a birthday gift. I am a coffee fanatic and this is my first dripper and it works great. It''s more than a great conversation piece. After 3 years of usage my steam started leaking water and got my floor very wet. I thought I might need a new mop but after I changed the filter, the problem''s fixed. Just remember always use distilled water, it will last longer.

Have had the Bissell steam mop for about 6 months now and am pleased with it''s performance, except cleaning grout. We have city (hard) water, but I decided to use it instead of distilled water due to cost. I use tap water right out of our heated spout (for tea) and plug the mop in and go. I mop weekly, and all was well until about a month ago. I accidentally left water in the mop container, haven''t mopped in 3-4 weeks, (back to school busy)and PHEW!! Mildew grew in the filter and the whole house STUNK like mildew when I used the mop. But the filter has lasted 6 months. But when they say "Empty out the water between moppings", FOLLOW DIRECTIONS!! Oh, and my mop heads are wearing out. I, too have ceramic tile (HATE IT!!!!)and the rough grout wears out the pad. Steam cleaner doesn''t clean the grout well, by the way....I have to be satisfied that I steamed it, so it''s sanitary, if not pretty.

Changing filters was easy, and it was easy to tell by the color change from green to grayish/black that a change was needed. Also my mop seems to make weird noises when the filter is bad, I don''t know if anyone else has noticed that.

It is recommended you change the filter when it is used up or you can do permanent damage to your machine.

I also have found that using a tiny bit of vinegar in the water tank keeps all the internal workings clean and mold free.

The filter just pulls up and off and the new one just snaps right in place and the water tank goes on top. Couldn''t be more simple.

I also use an inexpensive metal coil hot plate but you can use your gas stove or an alcohol burner. Go wild!

For the price its an excellent apparatus. I didn''t really use the extension on the side arm since the hose did not properly fit my sink which led to my only complaint.. There was slight distillate buildup in the side arm since it is not tilted downwards/there''s a rise in elevation from the sidearm horizontal tube to the 90 degree turn. However this would most likely be solved by actually using the sidearm extension instead of attempting to cool right at the mouth.

It works well and was good quality for the price. The boiling flask appears to have been used previously but nothing that a bit of warm water couldn''t clean out. Condenser appeared to be new.

NOW THE BAD i used the system for a YEAR and a day and the internal pipe burst and water leak out from the unit. Since Warranty is only for a year, I discovered the case is not sealed, as I first thought, but is held in place by four clips that are built into the bottom half of the case, for those who are interested, 2cm before the corners.

After opening the unit the fix was easy, the output hose inside the unit (from the pump to the output fitting) busted under pressure. The manufacturer used the same type hose used from the pump unit to the water bottle, not good for pressure applications.

I repaired the unit using a Nylon Reinforced Faucet Supply Line, Part Number 507-F3120 and two hose clamps. After looking at the unit''s inners it seems to be well designed except for that 6" tubing.

A message to the manufacture: you have a fine product, fix this weak link inside the unit and you will have a great product. Remember happy customers increase sales.

I love this little device. We now place our five gallon bottles of water in a cabinet (out of sight) and let this little pump move the water to where we want it. Con: It''s a little noisier than I wish. Even in a cabinet, you can hear it when it runs. It''s not an unacceptable noise though, just a humming sound.

I am writing a review of three toilet cleaning systems I''ve bought here on amazon:

Fluidmaster:

Uses a cartridge containing a chlorine based tablet.

Cartridge is not meant to be refilled.

Chlorine odor noticeable in the bathroom.

Cartridge can be modified (I used a dremel) so it is easily refilled.

NeverScrub:

Uses a cartridge containing a chlorine based crystal.

Cartridge is not meant to be refilled.

Chlorine odor noticeable in the bathroom.

Kaboom:

Does not use a cartridge. Bromine tablet refill inserts directly by unscrewing a cap.

No odor noticeable in the bathroom.

All three of these systems work the same way and all are really easy to install. All of them put a toilet cleaning chemical (tablets or crystals) in-line between the water fill valve and the toilet bowl fill pipe. All of them prevent the chemical from getting into the tank water (so there is no damage to the plastic parts in the tank). All sell refills for their systems. All keep the toilet bowl equally clean for about 1-3 months depending on how often it is flushed.

Amazon also sells Pool/Spa Cleaning Chlorine and Bromine tablets, which as far as I can tell do just as good a job keeping the toilets clean as the refills but at a fraction of the cost. I have tried all of the following, each of which provide enough tablets to keep all the toilets in the house clean for 10 years and they are all very cheap:

Kem-Tek 177:

The tablets fit well in the dremel-tool modified Fluidmaster cartridges.

The tablets fit well in the Kaboom.

The bathroom has a slight chlorine odor.

Spa-Kem 267:

The tablets are too large to fit in the Fluidmaster cartridges.

The tablets fit well in the Kaboom.

No odor.

Tropi Clear:

The tablets fit well in the dremel-tool modified Fluidmaster cartridges.

The tablets fit well in the Kaboom.

No odor.

Chlorine and Bromine are fairly equal in cleaning ability. Chlorine has that chlorine odor. Bromine is broken down by sunlight. Which is why, on a sunny day, outdoor pools use chlorine. But at night, or indoors, or on a cloudy day, they use bromine since there is no smell.

Summary. The Fluidmaster system works but the cartridges are expensive. To refill the cartridges easily requires a small modification with a dremel tool. The cartridge is too small for any tablets larger than 1 inch in diameter. The NeverScrub system also works but the cartridges are expensive. What I am using is the Kaboom system with the bromine tablets (either the Tropi Clear or the Spa-Kem 267) as they have no odor and clean just as well as the chlorine tablets.

This is one great product! My husband installed it and it took less than 5 minutes. We tried it on just one toilet in the house as an experiment, and 4 months later I just inserted the first refill. Now all our toilets have this contraption. This is one product which has made my life easier, and it truly lives up to it''s hype. It''s much safer for the tank parts than chlorine tablets, because the cleaning solution/chemicals/whatever remain in the casing, and the tank water simply passes through it on it''s way into the toilet bowl with each flush. And it''s far more effective than the products which clamp to the inside of the toilet bowl rim. This really, really works. Give it a try!

I repair a lot of toilets due to bleach tablets and other bleach based toilet cleaners that treat the water in the tank. the bleach deteriorates the rubber seals in the tank. this product bypasses the tank and delivers the treated water to the bowl. Healthmate Jr. HEGA

I bought the Austin Healthmate Jr. about 5 years ago for a dusty area and have been happy with it. The three things I like best about it are that you don''t have to buy filters very often because you can vacuum the outside of the filter and that it''s relatively quiet. The other thing is that it''s a HEPA filter takes air in on all four sides and blows the filtered air out through the top area. It seems to do a good job of filtering the air. It''s more energy efficient than air purifiers I''ve used in the past and it has 3 speeds which is nice.

If you use it in really dusty conditions like mine, you can replace the pre-filter more often than the big filter. I''ve found this type of material that I could cut to fit at a local hardware store. You get a pre-filter with it. You have to take it apart to replace the pre-filter and filters, but it isn''t difficult. You can turn off the machine and vacuum it from the outside and that seems to help the filters last longer. We had no need for a new coffee pot. The free one from Gevelia was working just fine. However, on a recent trip to K-mart we caught this one on sale for just under 40 bucks, and it''s RED! We''ve slowly been building up a counter top of red kitchen appliances, so the coffee maker fits right in!

Easy to clean! The mouth of the pitcher is as wide as the base, so it''s easy to get your hand inside to clean it out unlike some. Few buttons, so it''s easy to program too. Very light weight, so it''s also easy to move the maker around if needed. No complaints about speed either. I never feel like I''m waiting on it to finish. One small complaint, but it''s nothing major...there is no room for going over the 12 cup limit. It will overflow! Some makers have a little room for you to overfill, but not this one! No biggie, just don''t overfill!

I also like the wide karaff on this one. A lot of pitchers have a weird karaff that always causes you to spill a few drops when pouring that first cup. Not this one! Clean up of the coffee ground chamber is easy too. I suggest investing in one of those permanent copper reusable filters. They work really well with this one. I have yet to end up with grounds in the coffee.

Had an old Braun that kept clogging up and leaking water all over the counter. Had sticker shock when I started to shop online and other places for a replacement. Something relatively simple with a decent capacity as one cup of hot coffee for me equals about four cups as measured on the carafe. It brews quick and is pretty painless to use. It can use a permanent filter(not included) or paper filters and I''ve used both. If you want a stronger cup of coffee then you need to add more coffee grounds or use a stronger blend. The brew cycle is not adjustable for strength. It''s solid, well built, and the glass carafe feels easier to handle than the typical glass pot. Easy to Clean. A Good Basic Design.

yes it does have a short cord; yes it utilizes extra counter space; yes the water arm has to be moved before filling it with coffee; and yes, it is a 12 cup pot with no extra BUT, this hamilton beach is the BEST auto-coffeemaker i have ever owned -going back 40 years and many different brands and models.

it''s fast, programmable, pretty and makes great coffee. who could ask for more?

After having other coffeemakers that are hard to clean, slow, unnecessarily complicated, we finally have one that we hope never dies. It''s sleek, easy, makes great coffee and at a much faster pace than our previous machine (that died at two years-old!! ARGHHH!). Granted, it doesn''t grind the beans for you, but as anyone who has used the Cuisinart Grind & Brew, or something similar, those combos result in a steamy wet mess to clean up every time you brew. Too much moisture from brewing gets into the grinder portion. Also, since the grinding basket has to be dry when you use it, if you forget to clean it out right after use (like you''re late for work and the pot is low priority!) and discover your lapse the next day--too late to grind then. So, we have a separate grinder now, and love our Hamilton Beach. Besides, look at it. It''s just plain cool!

After several years of using pitcher based cartridges that are a fumble to work with, technically marginal in offering only minor purification and fairly costly in the long run, we decided to buy a more robust system. This unit is much better at removing nasties from the water although our city water is reasonably pure to begin with. This under-sink system is more cost effective and far more convenient without the overflow bits of charcoal that tend to escape from more primitive filters. The installation took about 15 minutes ad was straightforward. The longest part of preparing however was finding one critical piece. The system ships with a T fixture to join with the under-sink cold water line that did not match our plumbing. Go to a plumbing supply company rather than the corner hardware store for this item if you need it. The flow is great. Having it on the sink means that we can more easily use this for all cooking as well as the quick refreshing drink.

This unit makes some great tasting water.

I''ve used one of these for over ten years and as far as the water goes I have no complaints.

I split it between my sink''s drinking water and the ice maker in the refrigerator.

The only problem is the fittings for the copper tubing crack after years of use.

I keep my unit in the laundry room mounted on a wall in my basement under the kitchen. So one day we noticed they filter was dripping water. (This is better than actually putting it under the sink because it''s easier to change the filters)

I examined the unit and saw two of the fittings had stress cracks and one was leaking.

I replaced both of them with copper fittings (something like $4 for the two fittings).

Now we''re back in business.

We have had many under sink filter systems this is the absolute best. Excellent flow rate easy install. Some difficulty getting the water connection tee properly threaded on the sink side of the water feed, but once that was accomplished all went well.

Plumber installed as part of a kitchen addition, so can''t speak to installation. Also connected the fridge ice maker to the filter, nice. Prices have steadily dropped on this unit, as of this writing you can find these from reliable online venders in the mid-200s. Water here in Minneapolis is good coming out of the filtration plant, it''s just the 100 year old city water mains that I don''t trust.

Flow rate is ok at 0.6 gpm, there are certainly faster units, but this two canister unit is doing much more filtration than lower end units, as verified by Consumer Reports. Some units have what I call a soft water taste, which I detest, not this unit, water really does get as close to that spring water taste as you can get with this sort of filtration. Our dog and cat seem to be drinking longer and more often now that we have switched them to filtered water, nice to see.

I have to confess, we have gone through thousands of 2.5 gallon plastic jugs of water over the past 15 years, and I never felt good about it. We recycled them all, but plastic does not biodegrade very quickly, whether it has a bit of extra life as a plastic park bench (one recycle use) or not, it still eventually ends up in the landfill.

Works beautifully, water tastes better, and the list of things potentially removed from our drinking water is awesome. FAR cheaper than a bunch of plastic water bottles [got BPA?] and the result is simplicity. Change the filters every six months [there''s even an automatic reminder that buzzes you when it needs a change]. Love things that are quality and simple.
