Very easy to change without even having to shut off water (though I did) due to base''s integral check valve, in my setup anyway. Removes taste of chlorine very well which otherwise ruins the taste of coffee for me. Previous cartridge lasted 3 years only small utility sink I use mostly for coffee, drinking, icemaker and cooking water, not for washing, etc. Tap water here in Bend, Oregon is superb anyway, winning the 2012 "Best Tasting Municipal Water In Northwest" and in running for best in USA, to be determined. I just hate the taste of chlorine.
