Holmes HM630-U Cool Mist Tower Humidifier Save 39% Off

Holmes HM630-U Cool Mist Tower HumidifierIn the past, I have been very disappointed with humidifiers. Either they leak or don''t seem to do much of anything. However, this Holmes U Tower humidifier is sleek in design and has a few nice features such as:

The two filters are easily accessible at the base of the unit.

The tank is easy to handle, fill, and not too heavy to carry. If you have a small sink, you can always fill this slightly long tank in the bathtub or by using a teapot or water jug.

You have the option to set the humdifier manually on low, medium, or high humidity continuously or you can set it to automatically go on at low, medium, or high at a pre-set humidity level. If you use the automtic feature, then the unit cycles on and off like a thermostat would (although it does that too frequently for my taste).

In addition, the display shows the humidity of the room the unit is in, which is a nice feature.

The humidity level increases pretty fast, which is not typical of other units I''ve experienced.

According to the manual (I haven''t tried this feature), you also have an hour timer option of setting the unit to turn on or off after so many hours. This means, for example, you can program it to turn off 5 hours later or turn on 5 hours later.

The unit has a small footprint (see cavaet below), so it doesn''t take up much floor space.

With regard to the operation of the unit, you must remember to press and hold the on/off button to turn off the unit. If you unplug the unit, the humidifier returns to its factory default settings so you''ll have to quickly reprogram it every time. This is exceptionally easy to do, but some might find this annoying.

One very nice feature that remains in operation when turning off the unit from the front panel but leaving it plugged in is that the humidity of the room is always displayed. Obviously, you lose this benefit when you unplug the humidifier from the wall outlet.

When setting the unit to the automatic feature that enables it to operate like a thermostat, the unit may cycle on and off every few seconds or minutes depending on the humidity of the room, which means you''ll hear the fan cycle on and off repeatedly. If this is likely to disturb you while sleeping, then just put the unit into manual mode as I find you can never have too much humidity in the winter anyway. Of course, make sure you have enough water in the tank to run all night. The tank is rated to hold water for 36 hours of continuous use. However, I have only been able to get 10 hours continuous use on a tank at the highest humidity setting so keep this in mind when leaving the unit unattended.

I ordered the wick filters from the manufacturer because they are hard to find elsewhere; even though Wal Mart and other local stores carry the Holmes line, they don''t necessarily sell all the filters for every model. The filters arrived promptly within a few days.

The box says the unit comes with a 5-year limited warranty but the pamphlet inside says a 3-year limited warranty. I called Holmes at 1-800-546-5637 and they confirmed it was actually a 3-year limited warranty, so don''t be swayed by the box advertising.

There is one caveat that you might consider important, although this would not deter me from buying the unit. Since this unit is a tower model, it is easier to knock over (especially on an unsturdy surface such as carpet). You might want to take this into consideration in case you have young kids that run around or large pets that might wreck havoc in your house--meaning you may have to alter the placement of the unit to account for this scenario. My observation is that the chances of knocking this unit over are somewhat higher than the squat-to-the-floor models I''m so use to and which have been so ineffective.

Overall, I am very impressed with the unit compared to the four other humidifiers I''ve had previously. I had a Vicks humidifier, a different Holmes humidifier, a Hunter humidifier, and another one whose name I can''t remember. I''ve always been less than satisfied, so this is a nice change. I''ve been so pleased with this unit that over six months later, I ordered a second one.

Update October 2010 Finally one of my unit''s humidity sensors failed. However, since I''ve had this unit for several years that is to be expected. I can still use the unit to increase the humidity in the room but I just won''t know what the humidity level is unless I look at my second humidifier.

Pros:

displays humidity all the time

variable speed settings. 3 manual and 3 auto speed.

tower design does not take up too much space.

easy to add water and change filter.

Cons:

due to the size (length) of the tank, you do need a deep sink to add water. I use the bath tub.

the fan is loud even at lowest setting.

uses two filters.

Love the unit itself, however after 3 days of running it only 8 hours a night, I noticed the filter guage was saying "Replace Filter"

So I called the company to say, "hey .. it''s only been 3 days. I think the filter guage is broken" and they had me check the filter (it was yellow and crusty) and they said, "no .. it''s your water. you need to replace your filter or use distilled water." Then she laughed and said they had customers that replace their filters several times a week because of their water

So of course I''m not going to replace my filter every 3 days and I''m not going to use a couple gallons of distilled water every night before I go to bed in this thing ...

so if you have hard water .. this may not be the unit for you. Buyer Beware.

This product seemed to have been designed by someone who had never used a humidifier before. The water tank is nearly impossible to fill; there''s nothing to hold on to once the tank is upside down, and the opposite end is sloped so you can''t rest it against the bottom of your bathtub while it fills. Once it''s full, a juggling act is required in order to screw on the tank lid, since you can''t set the tank down anywhere. After trying twice and only succeeding in spilling water all over myself and the bathroom, I left this task for my husband to take care of, as he has very large hands and was able to fill the tank more easily, although he too complained that the tank was so poorly designed.

The tank capacity is too small; to keep my bedroom at a good humidity level, we have to refill the tank twice a day. Still, the thing did what it was meant to do--humidified the room--until after three weeks the full tank leaked all over the wood floor and area rug. We thought the top must not have been screwed on correctly, but it happened again, warping the wood floor. Leaving the full tank in the bathtub, it didn''t leak at all, which made us think that something had gone wrong with the base.

I didn''t waste my time trying to get this thing fixed. I returned it.

Essick Air 697-500 Variable Speed Humidifier Save 23% Off

Essick Air 697-500 Variable Speed HumidifierI received this item just before Christmas 2009. Our house was so dry I was slowly pruning. At 1500 sq.ft. on the main floor with 9 foot ceilings it keeps us quite comfortable and does the job. Have been running it straight since early December and no mechanical problems. Be aware of the following:

LOOKS: This cabinet model looks better on the website than in person. It is a darker brown than shown (not as orange) but still a pleasing colour. It is made of plastic and has a woodgrain pattern, but doesn''t quite live up to getting away with it, mostly because of the slightly warped top vent (yes, vents from top, cannot put stuff on top of here without blocking the ventilation). Ours comes out of the plastic hinge at the back and does not seat well in all grooves, but probably not noticeable to guests. It needs to sit with it''s back against a wall, as the back of the unit is not covered by a nice woodgrain cover, although it is brown plastic. You also notice the black filter hooked on the outside back sucking "filtered" air into the unit. My favourite part is it''s on four wheels, so it is very easy to move and vacuum around on my wood floors. Unless you have shag rug, it should also be fairly easy to move on a short pile rug.

CONTROLS: It has two dials "humidity control" and "variable airflow". The humidity control does not go by numbers (i.e. 50% 75%) so you don''t really know the current level of your home; however it does allow you to set low / comfort zone / high arond the dial, and will toggle off when it reaches the desired humidity level set. We set ours 1/4 turn above the comfort zone and that works well. Note that setting it on high still doesn''t peel your wallpaper, you can''t even see the humidity coming out like you can on an ultrasonic BUT it does do the trick, as confirmed by the empty bottles I''m constantly refilling. The variable airflow dial goes from OFF/COMFORT ZONE (which starts immediately from off) to HIGH. This unit is LOUD!! When they say comfort zone they mean for your EARS. I only put it up to 12o''clock position (medium, I guess) when I''m out of the room, and any higher is just noisy with HIGH being like a battering ram. The comfort zone is best and since we situate it right by our kitchen/nook and living room we keep it low. (I know what you''re thinking we have taken it apart and rechecked our setup, it is correct with nothing unusual accidentally left inside, no real reason it should be this loud. Only thing I can think of is plastic rumbling on four wheels with the echo of our hardwood floors maybe it won''t be as much of an issue for you).

BOTTLES: There are two large 2.5 gallon bottles that rest on the left and right of inside cabinet. They are easy to fill and the unit comes with a tube to help you fill from your tap. Also comes with one small bottle of bacteriostatic additive to get you going. We use distilled water so we don''t have the hard water build up in the bottom reservoir, you may want to use soft/distilled if you can get it or put an additive in to dissolve minerals. The bottles have handles on both top and bottom so when you turn them over to place them in it is easy to handle the weight. We don''t spill any water when doing this and it''s a great design. Also good are two "refill" lights that light up orange when each bottle is empty. They are easy to see through the grill on top as you''re walking by, but not obtrusive. Very easy to refill while the other still is going, no need to turn unit off.

NOISE and PRICE: It''s the only big drawback, and the price at $200 USD is steep for what it is. Would love to see real wood for that price, as there really isn''t much to the unit but a small fan, filter, and plastic.

All in all, there aren''t alot of different makes on the market to choose from, especially ones that don''t look utilitarian. This will do what you''re looking for but be aware if you have unusual dryness in your area and need to pump humidity with the control on HIGH, the noise from this baby will stop you from hearing your baby monitor and could keep you and baby up at night; otherwise, sleep soundly in the "Comfort Zone". Good luck with your purchase!

Apparently it must be these days even though I found one in a funky Lower East Side plumbing store for ninety bucks back in 1978 that served me well in my Broadway loft for 20 years. It was just a big wheel surrounded by a porous plastic wick belt that turned slowly in a five gallon reservoir much like a water wheel. The belt was easy to remove, wash and replace. No expensive paper intake filters, no bottles (just dump a bucket of water through the top once a day), relatively low noise. The rabbit just ran and ran with an occasional pulley belt replacement, which were generic and available at a local hardware store.

When it finally expired for good I searched in vain for the same machine. So I bought a Bemis which looked sort of like my old workhorse but was internally very different. It didn''t work nearly as well as the old one and was noisier to boot. After three years the motor died. I installed a replacement motor. Then a replacement water bottle. And of course new filters twice a season. And I bypassed the broken humidity control.

That brings me to the Essick, which I believe (although I could be wrong) is just a rebranded Bemis. I bought it as a Christmas present for my girlfriend who was suffering nose bleeds from the dryness in her place. But the Essick was too noisy for her so it wound up back at my house as a replacement for my aggravating Bemis. The motor expired during my first season with it so I replaced it. Then one of the plastic bottles sprang a leak in one of the corners. I fixed that with plastic epoxy. Then one of the low water sensors stopped working last year so the blower wouldn''t turn off. I just let that one go.

I cleaned the unit and filled the bottles for this winter season and guess what? Another dead motor. It''s on the curb now waiting for Sanitation or an enterprising DIYer to suffer the same heartbreak I''ve been through with it.

The vendor was great I received the humidifier within days and it works great. I wish the water tanks were a little larger. However the ability to remove the two tanks is a great feature. I live in an apartment of approximately 700 square feet so this unit is actually a little over kill but I am very happy with it.

I bought two of these units in 2009 for my house (3500sq.ft.). With forced air my house gets very very dry. The units worked great, but they can be noisy and they still need to be filled so in 2010 we added a built-in humidifier unit to the house. I was going to give the Essick units away when we did this, but I am glad we didn''t. The built in, running constantly, only brings my house up to about 20-25% humidity. With the heat running, this is not enough. Low humidity makes my sinuses hurt, gives my kids bloody noses, makes everything shock upon contact and makes your skin feel tight.

This morning my humidity was at 16%!! I went to the basement and brought up a unit, and within 15 minutes it is already reading 24%. It is a good idea to buy a digital meter (10-20$ on Amazon), so you can find what is comfortable. The units are noisy when at full speed, but I run them slow in the am and high when we are sleeping and this seems to work just fine. They are easy to refill and I am putting about 20 gallons of water into the house per day! This brings the humidity up to 35% which is comfortable for us. Bottom line, they look ok, but they do exactly what they are supposed to. After 3+ years both units still work just like the day we took them out of the box!!!

Got the Essick Air 697-500 Variable Speed Humidifier, several weeks ago, was able to raise the humidity in my 1500 sq ft rancher house from low 30% to high 40% and sometimes over 50% if I turn the fan all the way up on high, but then the fan gets pretty loud. MY Wife said here skin feels better. I saw lots of reviews and seemed like a lot had negative things to say. I have to refill both jugs approx every 2 or 3 days. and since it makes moisture you can not have anything other than a plastic cabinet the dark cherry does look like a a wood finish, thought it looked nicer than some of the other plain boxes avail. I Have not had any issues with the Humidifier so far everything works right from the box. Both jugs drain fine one at a time , did not have to level anything. But you do have to check the water every few weeks in the bottom of the cabinet just in case there starts to grow anything. Have had it for 1year now and everything still works fine.

Dial-A-Date Shower Water Filter KDF Shower Head

Dial-A-Date Shower Water Filter KDF Shower Head NOT IncludedWe are comtemplating a whole house water filter, but have not made that decision yet. Finding out that our skin was drying out because of the water in the shower, this was a great option to try out a filter without spending a fortune.

And for those who may not have the option of installing a whole building filter, this works well.

Well priced, easy to install, and it seems to work.

Wanted to reduce chlorine in our water and this filter really made a difference. Saw a difference in our hair the first time we used it soft and smooth instead of dried out. Will continue to use this type of filter. Just started using it but very pleased so far.

I like the filter, the water quality, and ease of access. I''m not thrilled about the faucet, and actually used a different one (Watts) for my installation. It''s also not clear how the "change filter" light works no comment in the manual. The light is located in the faucet, and cannot sense the actual filter so the only way it could detect a change is either by water volume or time. Also, there''s no information on how to reset it when the filter is changed. So all in all the little light was of no/negative use for me. The filter is good for 500 gals, and in my RV 500 gallons of water drunk is a LONG time to go. Another comment about the faucet it does not have a "momentary" feature where you can push/release; you actually have to turn it on and turn it off. In an RV, I like the momentary function, one less way to accidentally leave a faucet dripping.

Installation comment: there is a third small center screw hole in addition to the two keyhole screw holes; this screw will keep the filter housing from being accidentally pushed up out of its mounting screws when trying to re-mate a filter, so I highly recommend using it.

Lastly: this filter flows SLOWLY. At first, I thought it was going to be unusable, took about a minute to fill an 8oz glass. After the initial flushing time (10-20 minutes), the flow picked up to around 15 seconds to fill the same glass. This equates to around 1/4 gallon per minute, about half of what is specified. To be fair, this is in an RV with only 45psi of pressure, not the typical 60psi or more of a house installation. YMMV.

Bottom line I like the product, the dual-filtration in one small unit goes very well in my small RV, and the flow is okay if not exciting. It would be 5 stars if the faucet had a momentary, and instructions for the LED reset with a filter change.

UPDATE 2012:

I thought I could tolerate the low flow, but after a year of waiting minutes to half-fill a coffee pot, I got really sick of it. I upped my RV water pressure to 55psi, nearly house level, and still not much flow. Finally, I threw it out and replaced it with an inline unit. Lots of flow, 5 seconds to fill the pot. Not as convenient to change but with RV use, change is infrequent.

So on balance, I can''t recommend this unit for anything except maybe an ice-maker. It''s just too slow.

Air-O-Swiss AOS 7147 Ultrasonic Humidifier

Air-O-Swiss AOS 7147 Ultrasonic Humidifier - Warm and Cool MistThe 7147 is the quietest humidifier we have ever owned. It has easy to read digital controls, and the humidistat stays within one degree of one that also hangs on the wall in our bedroom. The filters do their job nicely and the warm mist setting keeps the room from feeling clammy.

The only issues I have with this humidifier is the way in which it is refilled. The oddly shaped top tank lifts off the pedestal control base and the refill opening is on the bottom of the tank. When you lift the tank off the pedestal daily to refill water drips everywhere as the tank sits in a pool of water. You then flip over the tank and remove the fill cap, which also happens to be connected to the filter! When you pull the filter out (which is filled with water) it drips everywhere! You then hold the oddly shaped tank upside down to refill. Since the top is now the bottom, and it is not flat you cannot set down the tank to refill. You also must contend with the nozzle where the mist sprays from, making a refill quite a challenge without getting everything around you wet!

Then you must re-insert the filter cartridge to seal the tank which displaces water. Since there is no fill line, it is easy to overfill the tank, and when the water is then displaced by the filter as you close the tank it squirts out! A simple opening on the top could have easily eliminated this problem!

The filler issue is the reason I rated the item a four out of five. It could and should be much better! Also, the controls do not remember previous settings once turned off, so you must reset your desired humidity level and fan speed each time you turn on the machine. It would be nice if previous settings were remembered!

We have been so pleased with the performance of the original Air-O-Swiss AOS 7145 Ultrasonic Humidifier Cool Mist in our 300 sq.ft. bedroom that we decided to upgrade and put the 7145 in our son''s room. The AOS 7147 is identical to the 7145 with some excellent additional features. I love the controls that provide; readings of the current humidity level, ability to set the desired target humidity level, and the ability to pre-heat the water to improve efficiency.

The one thing about which I have a minor complaint is the mist output level control. The 7145 has a dial control that allows for a continuous adjustment of the mist output. The 7147 touch controls provide only 3 absolute settings: low, high & high+. Frankly, I prefer the continuously variable mist output control of the 7145.

We are relegated to using well water which pretty much "eats up" wicks in evaporative type humidifiers, forcing frequent and costly replacements several times in a season. The mineral cartridge included with both the 7145 & the 7147 (but not needed where water is soft) does its job in treating hard water so the humidifier works as intended.

In the end I find this to be a product well worth the cost. Maintenance is easy, expensive replacement wicks are unnecessary, and the humidifier is reliable. I highly recommend this to anyone, but especially where hard water is an issue.

(Update 02/18/13)

Still using this daily without any problems. Still gives whisper quiet operation (the less expensive 7145 is a bit noisy, but not loud). Because of its very quiet operation, this 7147 would be an excellent choice for a baby''s or child''s room. I did not mention in my original review that the humidifier flashes an icon when it needs cleaning, a nice convenience. I use the Air-O-Swiss EZ CAL Cleaner and Descaler A7417 for thorough cleanings, but I find a regular rinse & brushing under warm water minimizes the need for this.

Buy Air-O-Swiss AOS 7147 Ultrasonic Humidifier Now

Researching humidifiers on Amazon was a somewhat tiresome exercise. Almost all products I looked at are subject to very serious complaints, most importantly noise, leakage, and lack of reliability. I decided to go with the AOS 7147 because most reviewers agree that it is really quiet, and because I liked the clean look and the features.

Here is what I can report after about a week of usage (will update if anything changes over time):

Noise level: Both my wife and I are extremely noise sensitive, but this unit can operate in our bedroom without affecting our sleep. Yes, there is a bit of a humming noise, but it is barely audible. Also there is a bubbling noise once in a while when water flows out of the tank into the tray. All-in-all, it seems about as quiet as can reasonably be expected.

Effectiveness: We use the auto setting that lets the device decide the target level of humidity and the output level. This works very well and hassle free, keeping the room comfortably moist.

Warm mist setting: I would recommend having it. Without it the room feels cool and damp. Even with using it there is a bit of a cooling effect, but it is acceptable.

Filtering/water treatment: We did not see any white dust around the unit, which was a concern.

Reliability/ease of use: No problems so far, straight-forward to operate, everything works as intended. I will post updates, if something comes up.

Look: Matters more than you would think, because it is supposed to be three feet away from the ground and away from both heating and return vents. Inevitably it will end up in a rather visible place. This unit has a bit of a techy, but overall relatively neutral look, better than most.

In summary, I am very happy with this unit.

Update: some tips on reducing the humming noise. Put a tray underneath the unit, then a thick sponge pad or similar cushion underneath the tray. The cushion dramatically reduces the noise level. The tray is very important. We first put the sponge directly underneath the unit, and that totally screwed up its moisture reading. We could watch the moisture level reduce from 50 to 49 to 48... to 37 in a few minutes and the unit cranked out steam like crazy. It seems that the unit needs to be placed on a hard surface to read the moisture level properly. Once we put a tray underneath it, the reading works normal again.

Love this product. Bought 2 of them for my kids rooms. I was tired of using the cheap humidifiers and the expensive filters that needed to be changed about every other week. The silver component in this humidifier is much better to have and I love the fact that is machine can do hot or cold mist and you can increase the humidity output. Very pleased with this product.

Want Air-O-Swiss AOS 7147 Ultrasonic Humidifier Discount?

I bought my unit for winter time usage when the air is so dry due to the cold, I soaked the filter for 24hrs prior to use, installed it, filled the machine and it would not work warning light system indicates ''no water'' even though tank is full. This means that there is too much resin in the filter and the manual says to remove 2 teaspoons. Even after removing 4 teaspoons it still would not work. I tried running it without the filter and it worked okay.

So I just run it without the filter installed and it''s fine, I do use filtered water though (and haven''t seen any white dust problems).

After getting it running I first wanted to use it on warm mist setting, when I chose this option the heater switches on and the unit started misting and all was looking good but the unit switches itself off after a few minutes every time I try to use this function, must be some kind of heater override that is preventing it from operating in this mode.

So I just use it in cool mist mode. It works well for this but makes the room cool which in winter time is not ideal but at least I get some humified air to breathe.

Unit operates quietly except for every few minutes the air inlet gurgles quite loudly, not enough to wake you or prevent sleep but is quite noisy when you''re awake.

So, all in all, my feature-packed unit only operates as a cool-mist generator, not a particularly good advert for the unit, I would definitely consider alternative brands next time due to QC issues of my machine.

Hunter 3.5 Gallon CareFree Plus Humidifier

Hunter 3.5 Gallon CareFree Plus Humidifier with PermaWick Filter, 34357We bought one of these Hunter humidifiers a few years ago. I liked the big tank, low-maintenance and no consumables (no wicks or filters to buy). The only problem was, as others have mentioned, that often when it switched off, a gallon or more of water would promptly dump onto my floor. I finally called Hunter to complain about it, and I have to say I''m incredibly impressed with their customer service, and with the simple fix (new design for the tray) which appears to fix the problem completely. This is now a very competent humidifier, and we''re really happy with it. You won''t see a cool plume of water vapor spewing from this unit, but it does work really well, and it''s very easy to keep clean (just throw parts of it in the dishwasher, and use vinegar and water to de-calcify the other parts).

For those who are shopping for a humidifier, you first have to decide what''s important to you. For me, the ultrasonic ones are a no-go because they spew white powder all over my room (mineral dust from our hard water). The hot steam ones are a no-go because they get all nasty from bacteria, fungi, etc. I don''t want to breathe that stuff in. And while the fan is far from silent, we actually like it at night, it''s a nice gentle drone that helps lull us to sleep.

Nice job, Hunter, on fixing the original design flaw, and on supporting the product so well.

I bought two of these Hunter humidifiers at the same time, and they did a good job of humidifying a 2000 square-foot house (1 upstairs; 1 downstairs). It seems like they operated non-stop during 4 very dry winters. Both units had similar problems during their 4-year lifetimes, but my issues weren''t specified in the manufacturer''s warranty so I never pursued replacement or repair. Since my cost-per-year (based on total purchase price) was $20/unit, I simply treated them as "disposables" and discarded them after the 4th year. This Fall I''ll decide whether to replace both with the same models or choose a competitor product.

This is not a "cool-mist" humidifier -it is an evaporative unit with a fan. The motor turns the fan and also drives a simple plastic impeller pump that circulates the water. There is a float connected to a power switch that will turn the unit off when the water level in the pan is low. My problems: both NiteGlow lights stopped working prior to the end of the 1st winter. I had assumed that the units would use a long-life LED, but that obviously wasn''t the case. During the 2nd winter, I had problems with one of the "float" systems, but was able to repair it myself. During the 3rd and 4th seasons, I had problems with the plastic fans rubbing the plastic case and causing noise especially on "Hi" speed. For their last year of use, I could only operate the units on "Lo" fan speed. The fans would still rub the cases intermittently, and it was very annoying in the middle of the night or while trying to watch TV.

On extremely dry days, the output capacity on "Hi" fan speed can truly be 3-1/2 gallons every 24 hours when the humidistat is on a high setting. Fortunately, the "Tote Away tank" is convenient to transport and easy to refill at a bathtub or deep kitchen sink. The fans were never "whisper-quiet" even from day-one, but you will tune them out as background noise after the first week of use. The digital humidistats worked fine until the 4th season when one died abruptly. They automatically turn the fan off when the pre-set humidity level is reached. For me, they sometimes stopped working temporarily after the units were cleaned, but they always started working again after the units had fully dried.

I always had trouble with buildup of minerals on the filter, pan, and chassis, but this is presumably the price one pays for not having paper filters? The water in the bottom pans of the units tended to concentrate our local pinkish "Serratia marcesens". This could probably be overcome with diligent (i.e. weekly) emptyings and cleanings. On Lo-speed, the water doesn''t seem to move fast enough to prevent mild stagnation in the bottom pan, and if you continue to use the unit once the ambient humidity naturally returns in the Spring then you may have trouble with moldy/musty smells since the water won''t be cycling very frequently.

The pan and filter frame do clean up easily by hand or in the dishwasher (after the PermaWick filter has been removed). I only had a single "overflow" onto the floor by one unit after 4 years of use. That should be physically impossible based on the design of the unit, so I don''t know what caused it. I suspect that I was responsible for it in some way. Nevertheless, had an entire 3+ gallons spilled onto the floor (upstairs!), it could have caused some major damage. If I use these units again in the future, I may set them inside some large plastic storage boxes (or an unused bathtub) as a secondary overflow prevention.

Positives: No paper filters! No white residues since the units are mist-less. The PermaWick filters lasted for 3 seasons, but they were inexpensive and easy to replace. The units are attractive in design, easy to use, and the non-moving parts (except for the nite-lite) are rugged. Ideally, the units should last for longer than 4 seasons, but at an average cost of approximately $20 per winter one can''t complain too loudly about the limited lifetime. If Hunter builds added quality into the unit, then the market price will undoubtedly increase to match.

This humidifier has been great to us so far. Easy to use. We''ve had no leaks or troubles. We also enjoy the ''white noise'' of the fan at night. The blue glow is neat, too. The first two years we used our very hard spring water. This will be the first year with softened water, so we''ll see how it goes.(I think a little hardness is necessary?) Much less messy than the cheap ones. The tank, when full, might be heavy for some to lug around, but the good thing is it has a handle and it won''t spill while you''re carrying it. I''d definitely recommend, and if I need another one, would go with the same one-even though it''s a little pricey in my opinion. I enjoy all its features too much to go without.

I''ve owned one of these for about 4 years and it continues to perform wonderfully. The water tank is easy to remove, fill and return to the humidifier. I have a humidistat in my house and the results were increased relative humitidy from 33% (very dry) to the recommended 42%. Big help for those with sinus and, or allergy issues. The "permafilter" will eventually have to be replaced but not until after several years of use (depending on the water supply).

It does work good but it is not large enough for a whole house, I should actually have 2 of these but the thing I love the most is that there are no paper filters to replace! The ones that have the replaceable filters really are the pits since the filters are expensive and don''t last long.
