Gaggia 16100 Evolution Home Espresso Cappuccino Machine Save 4% Off

Gaggia 16100 Evolution Home Espresso Cappuccino Machine, BlackAfter many happy (and dare I say, naive) years with our DeLonghi Caffe Espresso, it was time to replace our old workhorse. Having just spent the summer in Spain, where no bar is complete without the standard superautomatic Gaggia espresso maker, I decided that truly great espresso was a daily necessity. I was tired of incompetent teenagers / college students who work at local coffee shops mangling something as simple as a cappuccino (one part espresso, one part milk, one part foam) into a milk-drowned latte with no foam.

I wanted something in the range of $200, with a dependable track record and plenty of power to spare. I waded through a myriad of reviews for the Gaggia Carezza, hailed as a champion of its class, but read a number of negative reviews concerning design shortcomings.

Enter the Gaggia Evolution. Although the Gaggia Carezza and Evolution share the same innards, the Evolution boasts several improvements in design. With its 17.5 bar pump and high wattage, dual element boiler, the Gaggia Evolution is ready to brew in around 5-10 minutes (I always prime the boiler first).

Design improvements over the Carezza include: a larger drip tray, a cup warmer (although, as usual, it''s more effective to preheat your cups by filling them with hot water, which can be done during priming), anti-vibration mounts (once primed, the Gaggia Evolution is nearly whisper-quiet), and a brass commercial portafilter (the spouts on the Carezza were changed to plastic). My Evolution came with the Perfect Crema device (which is supposed to go under the single filter basket in order to create additional pressure/allow a coarser grind), but having read numerous negative reviews of the ineffective device, I simply left it in the box with the packing material.

Five stars for the instruction manuals and CD-ROM: the Gaggia Evolution comes with not one, but two instruction manuals: one from the manufacturer (Gaggia), and one from the North American importer (Importika). The Importika manual is intuitive, easy to read and injected with coffee humor, although the Evolution is not among the Gaggia models listed in the Appendix. The included CD-ROM walks you through setup in the form of short movies and narration, along with more advanced tips and techniques for coffee connoisseurs. We put our laptop on the kitchen table and followed along after unpacking our new Gaggia (thankfully, nothing was broken in the mail, as happened to several Gaggia Carezza owners). Although the manual hinted that your first coffee might not be potable, we''d followed various tips online (prime your new machine several times to remove any residue and plastic-y taste), and our first espresso was laden with crema. The Turbo Frother attachment made the creamiest, densest microfoam I have ever seen-it looked more like meringue (hint: use skim milk for best results). My only complaint would be the cheapness of the included coffee scoop, and you definitely want to invest in a better tamp for maximum extraction (the Gaggia takes a 58 mm tamp at a recommended 30 pounds of pressure).

If you''re not in the market to buy a $200-300 grinder (Rancilio Rocky or Gaggia 8002 MDF Burr Grinder) to go with your new Gaggia, Illy makes a delicious, dependable espresso grind, available in tins (decaf, too) or Pods. The Evolution is Pod-ready, simply use the single shot basket with the portafilter. Tip: "classic" double shots should take around 20-25 seconds to extract.

The Evolution is a steal for the current price, since it contains the same innards as other Gaggias in the $400-500 range. Although it runs around $50-100 more than the Carezza, I appreciated the design improvements, stylish lines (I have a Tuscan kitchen with hand-painted ceramics and terra cotta tiles and was afraid that the "modern" styling would stand out, but the Evolution is much more traditional-looking and unobtrusive than the Carezza), and performance. (Note: the Evolution is also available in an all-silver model, but it will set you back another $50. The black model features a black base and sides and a silver front and silver drip tray.)

Excellent for the espresso novice or connoisseur, easy to use and clean, and it makes better espresso than some $500-1,000 machines I''ve tried!

After calculating exactly how much money I''ve forked over to Starbuck$ in the last 4 years in exchange for burnt-coffee-flavored milk, I decided to look for a tastier, "wordlier", yet money-saving option. I did give the Nespresso machines a hard look (those use a metal capsule and they are quick, clean, and the coffee tastes quite good), but I eventually decided against them because the capsules are somewhat expensive ($0.50/piece plus shipping), and only available in a few different "beans". A regular espresso machine, such as this Gaggia model, opens up the world of exotic coffees and the pleasure of preparing them.

On to the machine. The black-and-silver design of this device would blend in nicely in a modern kitchen; I personally think it''s quite stylish. Sadly though, the black plastic of which it is made is of the shiny kind, which does not only show every smudge or drop of water, but scratches easily when you so much as wipe it with a dry paper towel (think ipod nano). The drip tray is quite flimsy; not a problem but just screams "cheap". The only badly designed piece is the cup warmer: it''s situated in the back half of the (slightly slanted) top, which barely gets lukewarm unlike the front half which does get hot, but can''t be used because it''s rounded and your cups would fall off. Again, this is not really a problem, as you can just use hot water to preheat your cups, but it makes you think that perhaps they shouldn''t advertise that feature.

Two things surprised me very positively. It''s very easy to fill the machine with water; you just slide out the container to the left, even while you''re making espresso. The other surprise was the milk frother. The steam "pipe" has a plastic attachment to it which contains air channels; some ingenious solution which ends up making perfectly frothed milk. A reviewer claimed that it doesn''t heat up the milk enough; I cannot verify that statement, but then I only prepare small amounts of milk, enough for one or two cappuccinos.

The guts of this machine are impeccable. It''s neither underpowered nor loud, all pieces that ought to be metal actually are, and it''s serviceable. The manual explains how every few weeks you are supposed to unscrew a few plates and clean them, and perhaps use a cleaning solution for the tubing.

Speaking of the manual, it gives you all you need to know to make a good espresso; the cdrom even has helpful little movies that show how a good flow looks like (neither splattering nor just dripping, just an even flow for 25 seconds).

All in all, I am extremely happy with my purchase. The manual humorously mentions that "your first espresso is probably not very good". Well, mine was delicious. Meanwhile, I''ve gotten my espresso routine down and find that it doesn''t take much time at all to make a good cup, certainly less than waiting in line twice at Starbucks.

By the way, you will end up owning a burr-type grinder, too. Beans last longer than pre-ground coffee before things turn bitter.

2012 update. I have now converted to the dark side and am a happy owner of an Nespresso Pixie. The Gaggia is still a good machine though.

I''ve had this unit for about 10 weeks now. I''ve made over 100 shots of espresso in that time.

Pros:

Plenty of pressure. Has no problem extracting a double shot of espresso in 25 seconds provided you have your grind setting correct.

Serious steam wand pressure. Easily takes 8 oz. of milk up to 150 degrees (and would easily go beyond if I let it) in under a minute, with a lot of foam (can easily double or triple the milk volume in that time).

Easy to use. One button to start warmup, one button to draw the shots of espresso, and one button to produce steam for the wand. Dial to adjust steam amount. 15 seconds from pressing the steam button to having lots of pressure available at the wand.

Produces nice espresso. With fresh beans and the right grind (burr grinder a must; you -willget poor results with a blade grinder), really nice shots with lots of crema. The temp is right, it''s not watery and it''s not bitter/burnt. With old beans or a poor grind, still makes average to good shots.

Perfect Froth wand. Purists hate this and insist that you should change out the steam wand with a standard one (which will work fine check out forums on wholelattelove for the recommended replacement part). However, I actually like the froth wand. While I do like taking the purist approach to frothing sometimes, on some mornings I just want a pitcher full of froth without having to think about it, and the Perfect Froth wand will deliver that every time.

Cleanup easy. Can clean up in a minute (bang out the coffee puck, rinse head under water, pop off Perfect Frother, rinse that, blast of steam out the wand, wipe the wand down, rinse out frothing pitcher, done.)

Warmup time. Ready to use in as little as 5-6 minutes. By the time I''ve ground the coffee, got the milk out, prepared the frothing pitcher, found my mug, put a flavor shot in it, and run a blank shot through the unit (to get fresh water in the pump and heat up the head and glasses), it''s pretty much ready to go. If you have time, give it 10 minutes to be sure, but works with 5-6 in a pinch.

Cons

Can be drippy. I empty the drip tray twice a week, that''s with making 2-4 shots per day. Doesn''t really bother me.

Water tank could be larger. Refill every 3-4 days. Slightly awkward to slide full tank back into place and manage the intake tubes. (Not really a big deal, may splash a few drops of water on you)

Perfect crema device could never get it to fit in the head, but haven''t needed it. Unit generates good crema as-is.

Casing not as sturdy as it could be. It does flex a bit as I''m tightening the head. Filter head handle has a little play in it.

Tamper is cheap plastic. I bought an aluminum one from Amazon.

Of the cons, the only ones that concern/annoy me are the slightly small water tank size, and to a lesser extent, the sturdiness of the casing. The other things are either to be expected, easily remedied, or easily ignored. People complain about the unit being drippy, but I''d rather have that than a unit with too little pressure it''s the residual pressure that causes the drips. That''s what a drip tray is for. Espresso is a slightly messy hobby, it comes with the territory.

Overall I am extremely happy with the unit. The internals are identical to units much more expensive. Results are consistent each time. The unit isn''t fussy; it''s fairly forgiving if I rush it in the morning or use older beans.

This is a great unit to graduate up to from an entry-level unit, when you start to get serious about making espresso and espresso drinks. For the price, the quality can''t be beat. I researched units for about six months before I bought, and I am very happy with the decision.

Final note you definitely also should consider getting a burr grinder if you don''t already have one. You can''t generate the consistency and fineness of the grind with a blade grinder, and if you buy pre-ground beans, that''ll work in a pinch but you''ll lose a lot of flavor and crema within minutes of grinding. Since buying this unit and a burr grinder, I now buy my espresso blends from local roasters directly because I finally have a unit where the quality of the beans does show through.

I''m not an expert; just a coffee lover. I get most of my information from the web sites: wholelattelove, coffeegeek, etc. They have buying guides for espresso machines & grinders, reviews etc. They also have videos for many products.

I had a Saeco classico for 8 years. It is still running and makes great espresso but I wanted to upgrade to a semi-automatic with a non-pressurized (commercial) portafilter. If you have decided to buy a pump-driven semi-automatic espresso machine, you have to choose between a pressurized and a commercial portafilter. They all use similar machinery (a single boiler and a water pump) but of course they differ in quality. Most semi-automatics, including Saeco and DeLonghi, use a pressurized portafilter, although you can buy an extra non-pressurized portafilter to use for some of these machines (about $50). Gaggia, as well as the commercial and most high-end home espresso machines, always use a commercial portafilter. Pressurized portafilters have valves inside the portafilter (under the coffee filter) to regulate pressure so that they open the valves only when the pressure is right. My Saeco had two plastic valves with metal springs. Non-pressurized portafilters on the other hand depend on the grind quality and the tamping to make the pressure just right. If the coffee grind is not fine enough or the coffee is stale or if it is not a consistent grind, it will not produce any crema: the water will flow through the grinds following the shortest path and will fill the cup within few seconds without producing any crema. If the grind is just right, you will have an excellent espresso, nearly as good as that of commercial machines. Pressurized portafilters on the other hand produce great espresso (but not excellent) and they are very forgiving about the coffee quality and grind. But from my experience with Saeco, the plastic valves inside the portafilter get dirty very easily and the coffee acids will make the valve surface rough, changing the valve behavior. Although I cleaned my Saeco frequently (with Urnex cleancaf), after the first 3-4 year, the valves started to open on higher pressure, which resulted to over-extraction and sometimes caused the portafilter to pop with a loud noise when you remove it, because of the built-up pressure. I ended up removing one of the valves. So that''s why I decided to buy a semi with a commercial portafilter.

My advice is: if you make mostly lattes/cappuccinos, buy a semi with pressurized portafilter. DeLonghi EC702 is currently on sale at an amazing price (and is stainless steel!). If you like excellent espresso, then Gaggia will make amazing shots and will last a life time. But with Gaggia (and all commercial portafilters), you cannot use most preground coffee (such as Illy or Lavazza), since they are ground for pressurized portafilters. You cannot also buy and grind your coffee in your local mega-mart (this is actually advice for any coffee machine) as their grinders are not cleaned frequently and the stale coffee oil in the grinder makes the coffee bitter. If you are close to a micro-roaster/coffee-shop then you are lucky. Otherwise, buy on the internet from a reputable local roaster. When you buy ground coffee for Gaggia, tell them that it''s for commercial portafilter (as their machines) and to grind it one/two notches coarser than their machines (you do not want to choke your Gaggia!). Ask them which grind setting they used so that you can ask for finner/coarser next time.

Eventually, you will need to buy your own grinder. Is this important? It''s important for pressurized but absolutely essential for commercial portafilter. The general advice is that you should spend more money for the grinder than the espresso machine. Originally, I had a Krups burr grinder, which was worthless even for pressurized portafilter. Then I bought the Capresso Infinity conical burr grinder ($80), which produces little crema with fresh beans even using the finest setting (supposed to be for Turkish coffee) and hard tamping. So my advice is to buy a good grinder, such as Baratza Virtuoso ($200) (not Maestro), or Gaggia MDF ($250), or Rancilio Rocky ($350), although I have never tried any of these. Don''t be cheap on the grinder. Watch the videos at seattlecoffeegear on buying a grinder. Also, if the Gaggia is a present to a friend, it would be a good idea to pair it with a good grinder, otherwise it may be disappointing at first.

About storing coffee beans: There is a misconception that you should never freeze beans. Experts say the opposite. You should pack them in freezer bags and store them in the freezer (best is if you vacuum-pack). You should unfreeze them overnight before use (otherwise they will choke your grinder). Another myth is that you should always use very dark roast beans (such as espresso or Italian roast). Any medium-to-dark roast is fine. It''s a matter of taste. Dark roast beans tend to be more bitter. Also, dark beans tend to be oily, which may choke your grinder and may require frequent cleaning.

Uh-oh looks like they are getting some bad feedback over the holidays...

Anyway, I have had my Evolution for a few months now and I really like it. This machine is replacing my old, cheap Krups model which served me well for a long time. I think it''s a good machine for the price asked...there are not many in this price range to choose from it''s mostly either cheap machines or ridiculously expensive machines. I have never had a ridiculously expensive machine so those of you that have may not want to buy this. For me this is a step up.

It is ready to brew really really fast, and it gets your coffee so hot, it steams your milk like a madman. It really is so fast and so hot...I love that! Be careful,it is so hot I burned myself on one of the metal bits...OUCH!

So, I think you will be happy with this purchase as long as UPS doesn''t drop it off a building before delivering it to you.

Oh, yes, there is crema. And do me a favor, try something other than Starbucks please. I use Illy which is good...my favorite is Seggafreddo which I just can''t find in any store...maybe I''ll look online. But really, please, just try something different, you might like it, and you might help keep Starbucks from taking over the world!!

Christchurch was recently rocked by a series of two major unrelated quakes. The Sep 4, 2010 7.1 quake did a lot of damage but the 6.3 of Feb 22, 2011 was much closer and shallower and destroyed most of the business district. My home was in the hardest hit Eastern suburbs along the Avon River. Since these quakes began we had almost 1700 aftershocks. My house is still standing although most of my neighbors are not. I had the foresight to buy a Berkey 8 months before the quakes began. My initial thought was that I did not need to store any water as I could take it from the river across the street to purify. But the day of the first quake all the water in the river disappeared and came up a liquefaction in the road and property. The only water left in the river was a white sludge which would have clogged any purifier. I was able to get some municipal water and use the Berkey to purify that. It has been in constant use since the quakes began. Although the city says the water is safe, several friends have reported strange infections they attribute to the water. So, I will continue to purify the water and have not had any of these problems. The water tastes wonderful and makes a drop at a time but fairly quickly. My only complaints are that the instructions were not clear how the washers on the tap go on (they are not symmetrical) so I had a few leaks the first time I used it. Also, the device is called "Berkey Light" so I assumed it was the model that has the LEDs built in to illuminate it at night; it does not. That model is called the Berkey Light LED. The use of the word Light is misleading. Now I wish I could have had the model with the LEDs as power was off for a considerable time. The device looks a bit top heavy and looks unstable but so far it has not fallen over in some large aftershocks. Maybe the company can invent a device to secure it. During the latest quake I didn''t have water for over one month. This device is a lifesaver and I am purchasing extra filters for it just in case Planet X shows up one day in the future...

February 2009: Works great and so much easier than bringing bottled water from the grocery. No need to stock up during hurricane season and no plastic bottles going into the recycling. Makes tea and coffee taste better. Got one for several family members and it takes away the off taste from water out in the country.

Update April 2011: The Berkey Light continues to serve me very well. There was a slight glitch a couple of years ago when the upper container developed a crack in the bottom, parallel to the seam. The company replaced it quickly and without question. I only started using the 2nd filter a couple of months ago. So filtering approximately 10 gallons per week the original filter lasted 4+ years. One family member is still using the Berkey Light mainly to make better tasting tea. The other family member who received one as a gift no longer uses it, probably because of lack of space and the inconvenience.

I will be the first to admit that the price is a bit steep for a couple $10 plastic jugs and a $5 plastic spigot. I admit the filters are worth it though. They seem to do the job quite nicely.

We have very distasteful tap water where we live. Unfortunately, even these filters are not enough to make the water taste palatable. However, I certainly feel better having this water filter system in case of an emergency.

This is a nice filter. I did about 6 batches of water and the filter element came unglued. I called Berkey and they sent new filters out and I returned the old broke ones. My well is hard water with iron and after running it through the filter it is great tasting and really clear. I haven''t tried this on rain water but it should work. Glad I bought it just hope it lasts.

6-pack of Aquasana 18 Oz. Glass Bottles Save 25% Off

6-pack of Aquasana 18 Oz. Glass BottlesFor me these bottles are perfect. If you stand up a paperback book next to one, you''ll find that the book just reaches the bottom of the bottleneck where the threads start. The circumference is the same as a 24oz soda bottle. That gives you a good idea of the size. The caps only need to be hand tightened to accomplish a waterproof seal. I recently moved and found that 2 of my caps had vanished during the move. I contacted aquasana and they sent me 2 new caps for 1.50 each.

I make my own homemade tea. I make a pitcher and then use it to fill three of these bottles. I then make a different kind of tea and fill the other three bottles. Then when I want tea, I just have to grab a bottle from the fridge. Just as convenient as store bought tea, but not nearly as expensive.

To clean I put them in the bottom rack of the dishwasher, one tine per bottle. I put the caps in the silverware basket and close the lid (of the silverware basket). If you don''t have a lid on your silverware basket you might want to just had wash the caps.

I purchased two sets of these bottles to replace inexpensive water bottles that I was reusing and refilling at home. After a while, it simply became too cumbersome trying to clean the plastic bottles and small plastic caps in order to keep them sanitary so I began my search for inexpensive glass replacements. I have to say that I couldn''t be happier with my purchase of the Aquasana 18 oz glass bottles! I have owned them for about a month and they have really held up to steady use! Some users have complained about the blue plastic caps but I find them to be very sturdy, just the right size and very easy to screw on and off. They also include a rubber o-ring inside which makes for a water tight seal! Best of all, the bottles and plastic caps are sturdy enough to place in the dishwasher! My favorite use for these bottles is filling them up with water and using single serve packets of drink mix. I simply pour the packet of drink mix in the water, place the plastic cap on and shake! I do this to all 12 of my Aqusana 18 oz bottles and put them in the refrigerator to get nice and cold. This way, I always have a healthy, low calorie assortment of drinks ready to go! I do want to point out that the opening of the bottles that you drink out of is larger than a standard water bottle. During normal use, you will not be able to drink with your entire mouth around the opening of the bottle. If you did, you would probably choke on the drink! I personally don''t find this to be a problem at all but I know that some other reviewers have preferred a smaller bottle opening.

Buy 6-pack of Aquasana 18 Oz. Glass Bottles Now

I picked up a six pack of these bottles from aguasana. They hold 18 oz which is just right for me. The glass is thick and keeps cold when taken from the refrigerator. The caps are plastic with a gasket so you can lay them down if needed. Since the caps are plastic just remember not to over tighten them. The opening of the bottle is 1 & 1/4 inch in diameter. They don''t want to tip over like the larger/taller bottles.

There is only one thing that drives me crazy about these bottles. Every bottle and the box they come in has a sticker "Made in China." Is it that difficult or that expensive to make a simple glass bottle with a cap here in this country??? Does the company save that much by having them shipped all the way from China and then trucked to their final destination??? I''m over 60 years old and I can remember when WE made everything but now we don''t manufacture anything in this country!!!

My husband and I bought a water filter from Aquasana a while back, and with it we got three of these lovely glass water bottles (and two totes). I couldn''t be happier with the bottles. They are a convenient size, and when combined with shoulder totes (available at their store and possibly here, too) very handy for on the go. I''ve not had any trouble with the lids, and I LOVE the wide-mouth design, which is like drinking from a thin glass. It''s very comfortable, and very, very handy. I''ve dropped two of them off of tables and night-stands and the worst that''s happened so-far is a scratch. I''m accident prone so I''m very happy with this result.

Update: it''s now almost a year later and still no breakages. I love these things.

I bought these bottles as a substitute for the commercially filled plastic hoping to make an easy transition. The bottles serve their purpose, and, of course, the water tastes the same. Tap is tap, after all. I just know we can do better. The bottles are a bit heavy, cumbersome, and slip out of your hand easily when taken from the fridge. As mentioned on an earlier review, the opening is large and takes some getting used to. Also, not to be nit picky, they don''t hold 18oz. They hold 16.9oz, the same as traditional plastic bottles, although they seem much larger.

Mr. Beer Octoberfest Lager Refill Brew Pack Save 6% Off

Mr. Beer Octoberfest Lager Refill Brew PackI am really happy to see Mr. Beer is participating now on Amazon! I wish the description would provide some background about what the beer is like. I had to go to their website to figure out what kind of beer this refill is like. For some reason, the URL will not paste into this comment box. Here is the product info:

"Also referred to as Märzenbier, this malty, deep amber colored beer features a smooth body, toffee-like malt richness, and a full, biscuit like bouquet. Sample the celebrated beer of Munich''s world famous Oktoberfest."

I got a Mr. Beer keg kit back in 2006. I did some brewing for two or three years but then got caught up in grad school and work. I am getting back into the swing of things and trying out the various flavors. This Oktoberfest seemed a little light on taste. I served it at a party and people said they tasted fruits, nuts, and coffee. I thought, it was a decent batch but not the best flavor I have brewed before with Mr. Beer.

Finally, ignore the initial reviewer of this product. I did not have trouble realizing that the booster was already included (starts at 3.7%ABV), added some sugar (increasing it 1.5%), and filled up the whole plastic keg. The instructions are clear. I also like not having to include the booster because it didn''t always dissolve quickly in boiling water. The prepped malt is a nice change!

I like this one and if you like Octoberfest you shouldn''t be disappointed. This is my second brew with 2 weeks fermenting, 2 weeks carbonating and 2 weeks in the fridge and I couldn''t be happier with what I poured. I think it tastes great (nice berry flavor) and the head is bold, lasts and doesn''t evaporate in seconds like most beers. If my other brews come out like this one, and my first brew of the Irish Stout, I''ll never be in the beer aisles of a food store again. I purchased this directly from Mr. Beer because the price was lower and I was ordering enough other items (sanitizer, bottles and several refill kits) that made their flat rate shipping worthwhile... they also offer some really good custom kits that crank out some higher alcohol levels if that''s of interest (this one is good for about 3.7% and that''s low for a beer but I wanted taste and I got it... I don''t need to get drunk on my first mug of it. Someone commented on the booster pack but it''s not needed with this item unless you want to increase the alcoholic content.

BISSELL ProHeat 2X Healthy Home Upright Deep Cleaner, 66Q4My carpet is old and due for replacement. While this Bissell carpet cleaner couldn''t remove years of wear, it did remove a surprising volume of dirt. At first, I didn''t think it was really doing all that much. But once I emptied out the tank, my God, what a filthy carpet I was walking on! The used water was a very dark gray bordering on black. Yuck!

There''s a handy little spinning wheel icon on the base of the unit (aka the flow gauge) that tells you if everything''s going according to plan, or if you need to change the water, add cleaning fluid or some other issue. If it''s spinning, you''re in good shape. When it stops, you need to fill or empty the tank(s).

The cleaner has 4 different "custom clean" settings. I mostly used the "normal clean" setting and then switched to "heavy traffic" for the dirtiest regions. The "Dry Aire" feature sends hot air to your carpet to aid in drying. As I write this, my living room is somewhat humid and the floor is damp. I don''t think it will take long to dry though.

A small bottle of Bissell cleaning solution is included. Do yourself a favor and buy a larger bottle before this item arrives. You''ll go through it pretty quickly, so probably best to buy a decent sized refill in advance of delivery. Otherwise, you are flat-out going to run out of cleaning fluid before the job is done.

So what''s not to like? Well, it''s somewhat heavy and bulky. For someone small and weaker, it might be a bit hard to move around. Obviously, it rolls on the carpet fine, so that''s not an issue. But it''s a big unit and you probably need at least a little bit of muscle (but not too much) to use it properly. The tank filled with water might be a bit heavy for some as well. You carry it like a bucket, but toting around a bucket full of water and bending down to insert and remove the tank isn''t a simple thing for someone without a moderate amount of strength.

Assembly was quite easy. You put the top half into the bottom half and secure it with 3 Phillips screws. Nothing too tricky there. The tool rack requires a touch more attention. The illustration was not as clear as I would have liked and it took a bit of head scratching to figure out where a couple of tools sit on the rack. You''ll figure it out, but again the illustration could be clearer.

While the top of the hose rack secures with a screw, the bottom does not. I noticed that one other reviewer said that the bottom of the rack (no screw to secure it) would not stay in place. I initially had the same problem. However, I looked at that bottom rack a bit closer and there''s a tab that needs to snap in place and if you don''t do it just right, it will keep falling off. Play with it and you''ll see what I mean. If that bottom hose rack is popping off, you probably haven''t installed it correctly. It''s not hard, but you need to slide the lower hose rack piece in just right so that it clicks and locks into place. It''s not just gravity that''s holding it in place, but that''s what you''ll think if you don''t do it right.

The only other problems I had was that my knee and/or the cord kept knocking the hose off of the hose rack and onto the floor. I''m no engineer, but I think it could somehow be secured a bit better. Once, I knocked the hose off and then put it back on the rack. However, the head''s trigger was pushed on the stain brush, which I didn''t notice. By the time I discovered that the button was pushed, my leg was very wet and the brush had soaked my wallet and remote control. Fortunately, they are fine, but keep an eye on that so you don''t spray cleaning fluid where you don''t want it. Also, the coiled power cord rests right next to the coiled hose and they interfere with each other. I can''t help but think that they could have designed this a bit better.

I went back and forth as to whether to give this unit 4 or 5 stars. If you solely look at whether it does what you expect it to, it''s a 5 star item. It cleans your carpet well and gets out a lot of visible dirt. There are a few minor issues, but overall this is a nice carpet cleaner and it cleans very well. However, I knocked that hose off so many times either with my knee or the cord that I have to give it 4 stars.

I think that this Bissell will go a long way towards keeping your carpets looking nice and potentially extending the life of your flooring. I recommend it, despite a few minor issues.

I purchased my 2x pro heat about 1 month ago. Prior to this I used a low end Bissell which I thought was good, but with one pass on this new cleaner I was impressed.

I want everyone to know that I recommend this cleaner, it far surpasses my lower end Bissell and the high end Hoover I borrowed from the neighbor.

Reading some of these other reviews I understand the problems with some of the negative reviews.

One person writes that the cleaner left all the water on the floor. There is a red filter/flapper on the dirty water resivour. If you get too much foam in the container there is a flap that closes the intake so that the foam does not get sucked in the cleaner. Go dump the dirty water. Then check that red flapper and make sure it is not stuck to the intake. If it is just tap the container and it will flip back down. If it is sticking then you may be using too much cleaner.

When you finish up make sure you fill the soap container with water and run rinse water over the last part of your carpet. You are asking for trouble if you do not do this. Regardless of what Bissell says, get the soap out of the lines before storing the cleaner.

If the carpet is so dirty that the water is sucking up black. Between cleanings make sure all the moving mechanisms do not have stuff caught up in them. Your asking for a belt to break otherwise.

Do not be a fool and use some home brewed serum for carpet cleaner. Use Bissell carpet cleaner products. This cleaner has a heater on-board so the home brew stuff might cook and create chaos! Never use oxyclean or comporable products, they are desintegrators of plastic. You can use Bissells oxy proucts and I recommend them. This is how I lost my old cleaner. When I was speaking with the salesperson I heard a gasp when I told them of my cleaning serum.

Some people are just not mechanically inclined so they do not think about these simple things. I hope my review allows people to understand some of the bad reviews. There is nothing wrong with this cleaner...and if I ever need to contact their customer service and I get lousy service they will not hear the end of it.

I had previously owned a Bissell ProHeat back in 2002 and felt that there was a lot of money invested in a cleaner that didn''t really show a lot of promise. When I moved across the country, I didn''t feel much of a loss when the moving company accidentally "misplaced" the ProHeat. When I saw the newer 66Q4, I wanted to test it out in order to see if Bissell had made any marked improvements over their previous lines, and alas, there''s not a whole lot of change.

For around $300, you''re paying for a couple of things. First off, you''re paying so that you can clean your carpet on your own time; no need to schedule a professional steam cleaning company to do it for you. You''re also paying for the clean that comes with "washing" the carpet instead of just vacuuming up the dust and dirt that''s accumulated between the fibers. Most professional steam cleaning companies charge around $100-200 for their services (obviously depending on the size of the house/apartment), so there is a lot to be said for just purchasing your own machine and cleaning when you need to. Unfortunately there has yet to be a single-unit device made that can match the power of the multi-thousand dollar units that the pro''s use. The ProHeat is no exception to that rule. So the question comes down to: Will the ProHeat work well enough that your calls to the professionals is lessened? The answer is: Yes, however you will still call them on occasion when you want your carpets "really" clean.

If you are new to carpet cleaners, there are some generic things you should know that apply to all carpet cleaners:

They are heavy and cumbersome, even without the liquid

They are messy, both to use and to clean up

They will probably end up smelling (think vacuum funk)

They take a long time to use (3-4x''s as long as a normal vacuum, not including dry time)

The cleaners are expensive and get used up quickly, and arguably, unneeded

The unit itself worked as well as expected. The dual brushes do a good job of agitating the carpet fibers so that a significant portion of the dirt embedded gets dislodged. After cleaning the area was visually "brighter" than non-cleaned areas. However, unlike professional cleaners which have a huge suction pull behind their steaming process, the ProHeat does not do a good job of reaching into the carpet pad underneath. Therefore the ProHeat will do a good job of cleaning the surface stain, however it will not remove all traces of things like pet urine (after a good cleaning with the ProHeat, the black light will still glow). Using the spot cleaner along with a little bit of enzyme-based pet urine remover formula will help. Also, it should be noted that the brushes themselves are quite stiff, so if you are seeing a lot of carpet fiber ending up in the cleaning liquid, you may want to reconsider using a agitation-based cleaner (hypothetically you should already be seeing the same behavior with your vacuum).

All-in-all, the ProHeat isn''t a bad unit, however if you''re considering "upgrading" from a previous model, there''s not much new here; nor has the core functionality been improved. If you''ve never owned a carpet cleaner and just need something to do a good carpet shampooing twice a year, this is a good buy (I would consider this a bit too bulky for a day-to-day spot cleaner) and the unit itself works great as long as you understand that it is not on par with a professional steam cleaning service.

We got this carpet cleaner because we have an autistic child and she can get a little bit messy. I wish we had done more research before buying because now I realize just how bad the design of this cleaner is. Instead of having two separate tanks for the clean and dirty water the Bissell has a bladder system in which the clean water is poured inside the bladder and the dirty water is stored in the tank around the bladder.

If germs bother you then your not going to pleased with the disposal process of this unit. It''s a pretty disgusting process of pouring out the nasty smelly water that sits around the bladder that the clean water goes in. The bladder design also makes it difficult to clean the tank out when finished. We used the hand tool a lot and it worked pretty well but now the water isn''t spraying out and I have to turn the unit off for a few minutes to get it working again.

Finally I just recently noticed that the bristles on the floor cleaner are no longer spinning. We paid over $200 for our machine and for that much money I would have thought it would hold up better than it has. After reading many of these reviews I think I will be looking at another brand in the future.

This cleaner replaced a Hoover Steam Vac (my 3rd) that had lost suction. First impressions:

It was easy to put together. I didn''t need the instructions, but I did need a long Phillips screwdriver. My short-bit rechargeable was too short for some of the 4 screws.

There was good, secure storage for the various attachments, plus a bag for holding them. I don''t know what I am supposed to put in the bag, but I suppose it is useful for those that don''t want to push around the machine with all of the attachments. Although I never use them, I like to have them on the machine. The bag has an easily removable Bissell tag and once removed it is a nice, but not terribly high quality, mesh bag that will work well for the beach.

I like that there is a heater to increase the water temperature as hot water is supposed to help in cleaning the average carpet, but I also like that it can be shut off for fragile items. The heater will increase your water temperature by 25F degrees, with a max temperature of 190F.

I was surprised that there is a separate container for the cleaning solution. You add the water to one area, soap to another, then set the mix to the dirt level you are dealing with. I like that you don''t waste mixed solution or need to keep going over an area until you have used up what you have mixed. This machine came with a 16 oz. bottle of Bissell Multi Allergen cleaner (no pet cleaner, but I did get the lovely mesh beach bag!) The directions specify 5 oz. per gallon of hot water, which is the same as my bottle of Resolve cleaner.

I liked the separate shot of cleaning fluid that comes out the side on request. Great for hitting the spots of unknown origin.

There is also a setting for rinse, which does not add the soap from the separate section. Obviously this would not work if you pre-mixed the soap and water, but it is a feature I really like as I don''t like soap residue on my carpets.

The tanks for clean and dirty water are one unit. They don''t seem to hold as much as my old Hoover, but I also don''t have to worry about the dirty water slopping around when emptying it. I noticed the clean water tank had a few suds in it when I was done, so I think there is a little cross-contamination. The water tank is actually a bladder and it was impossible to empty completely when I was done cleaning.

This did not come with a hard floor attachment, but says one is available from Bissell. My Hoover one never picked up much of the water, so I doubt if I will bother with this Bissell (my Hoover attachment does not fit).

It is easier to move around than the Hoover, partially because it is a little smaller in size and part because there is a habdle on the front that can be used when you want to lift the machine over something (like a rug you don''t want to clean).

I appreciated the little spinninbg wheel that told me when I ran out of water or soap. It also clued me in when I put the water unit on incorrectly and so had no suction.

As far as cleaning, which is the big thing, it works about as well as my Hoover did before it started to lose suction. They may not be quite as good as a professional cleaning, but with multiple pets and lots of dirty feet, I don''t go without having a carpet cleaner on hand. I think this is a great home machine and I recommend it.

Cuisinart DCC-2750 Extreme Brew 10-Cup Thermal Programmable Coffeemaker Save 51% Off

Cuisinart DCC-2750 Extreme Brew 10-Cup Thermal Programmable Coffeemaker, SilverLet me first say that I have been struggling to find a coffee maker which meets my needs. Everyone has particular "must haves" when they are looking to buy something and for me, I needed to find a coffee maker that: (1) met my budget (2) made a nice strong cup of coffee and (3) definitely did not have a glass carafe since I''m a total klutz and keep breaking them. Everything else for me was less than important so I put those aside as little annoyances. This one finally met my needs. And if you want to see more of the details of any coffee maker, no matter where you end up buying it, I would recommend going on Zappos to look at the model, they have a video of this one which goes through the various features of this appliance.

As far as addressing some of the negative comments I have seen on it, I think some of them are not necessarily "poor" design but "intentional" design. First, the lid is a bit difficult to turn, however, it is a very tight seal and that''s necessary when you are counting on thermal to keep the coffee warm. However, turning it is a little difficult, but hey, it is not SO hard, and I have bad joints so if I can do it I don''t see how it would be an issue for others. I absolutely never had a problem "lining it up" either, not once. Second, yes, I agree with others that to pour the coffee out you do need to pour it on a sharp angle, and the last bit of coffee is hard to get out. Again, the reason is that with this thermal design there is a large inner lip. This is effective again to keep the coffee fresh and warm. When I get to my last cup, I simply take the lid OFF and pour at a completely 180 degree angle to get it all out. I mean you are going to take the lid off at this point ANYWAY to wash the pot. Not a big deal for me. I have a lot of counter space so fitting it under a cabinet and opening the top isn''t an issue, my coffee makers were never under cabinets. Most of them are top loading, I think folks commenting on this may be in small spaces and should be looking for smaller models or models that fit the need for under cabinet use.

In terms of the coffee staying warm, it was always pretty warm for when I had a few cups. I am not sure some on here are following the directions but since this is a thermal unit, you should whoosh around some hot water in the pot to warm the inside and then dump it right before you start the brewing. If you start with an ice cold metal pot, I doubt you will get the same thermal effect. And yes, the dial is hard to see. This isn''t like a night light thing or something you should be using as a clock. I think for the most part you set it and forget it. I''ve seen some complain about the clock being too bright on other models so if this is important to you I guess you need to put that as a criteria when picking a model out.

I like the Strong brew and the 1 to 4 cup options. The coffee made a pot very quickly and it was hot. I know some use the coffee pot itself to pour water into the unit. I never did that so for me this isn''t an issue either. I tend to take my large mug, fill that water, and pour it in. This is because I have this down to an exact science for how much coffee one of my mugs needs (my mugs are not equal to the guage of cups on coffee makers). But if you plan to use the carafe as your water dispensing vehicle, I can see how this type of carafe with it''s thermal design might be difficult.

Anyway, I''m very happy with this unit. I don''t give anything 5 stars unless something is near perfect. So if there were 4 and a half I could give, I would put this model at that level. All in all I feel I made a good purchase which very much meets my needs.

I just purchased this coffeemaker from another retailer. I had a similar Cuisinart for several years and was very satisfied with its looks and performance, but I wanted one with a thermal carafe because I don''t like coffee that has sat on a hotplate and I got tired of pouring the coffee into a separate thermal carafe every morning. This model has so far been great except for a couple of minor things. I don''t share any of the previous reviewers complaints except for one: it is difficult to pour out the last 1/4 cup of coffee from the pot.

The two other things I don''t like about it are 1) the silver finish looks cheap to me; not like my other Cuisinart, which had the same finish as a nice stainless steel appliance, and 2) it doesn''t keep the coffee hot for very long. Not much of a problem because we usually drink our pot of coffee within an hour or two.

Follow-up: I am downgrading my review from 4 stars to 3. After using this coffee maker for a few months, I have to say, it''s not very good. I have had trouble pouring the coffee without it dribbling down the side and all over the counter. Then discovered the cause: The coffeemaker''s water reservoir holds more water than the carafe holds. The solution is to fill it only to the 9-cup line on the side of the machine. This is the only way to prevent overfilling the carafe (and making a huge mess), even though it is supposed to be a 10-cup pot.

Follow-up No. 2:

Like some others, we were having trouble getting the lid on and off the carafe. My genius husband discovered that if you put a drop of salad oil on your finger and rub it all around the O-ring at the top of the lid, it works waaaaay better!

Buy Cuisinart DCC-2750 Extreme Brew 10-Cup Thermal Programmable Coffeemaker Now

The "extreme brew" functions work well: coffee tastes delicious. However, the reviews criticizing the carafe (difficulty pouring completely and keeping coffee warm) match my experience and have been frustrating. Also, the design of the top door require pulling the coffee maker out from under the cupboard every time we want to fill or empty grinds and water which is a daily irritation though a mild one. I am grateful that it uses a carafe since it eliminates the hot plate cooking the leftover coffee but wish it were more substantial and the bulky, square design has no justification given the flaws mentioned earlier. It is a disappointment but I did buy it from a different seller so I didn''t have a chance to read these reviews or I would''ve been warned. (Update) Having lived with this appliance several months now, I would upgrade my rating from 3 to 4 stars, since, though my original criticisms are still valid, I have been very pleased with the taste of our coffee when brewed with this machine, a marked improvement over the Braun (with hot plate) that was our coffee maker for fifteen years previous.

I purchased this Cuisinart coffee maker for my husband as a birthday present bundle also purchased a Mr. Coffee bean grinder and 8 O''Clock 100% Columbian whole bean coffee. I have to say, after reading the other reviews, I can''t make the same complaints. I think the reviews are just being overly critical of the machine. I have no problems with my machine and use it every day to make at least 3 pots of coffee a day. If you want a good, solid coffee maker that brews an excellent pot of coffee, then this is the one for you. If you want it to brew itself, this ain''t for you. It is simple and easy to use. It definitely isn''t your $9.97 special from WalMart but I think, for what it does, the price is worth every penny. You won''t be disappointed.

Having this coffeemaker saves me 15 minutes of prep in the morning. It''s nice waking up to coffee already made. The operation is easy, setting the timer, pouring. No problem with overflows. The only thing I''ve noticed is our coffee isn''t as hot as we''re used to. If I don''t drink the whole cup in the five minutes after I pour it, it cools off pretty quick. Not sure if there''s a way to fix this other than reheating the coffee on the stove. Other than that, I''m pleased with this kitchen device!

West Bend 58030 12-30 Automatic Party PerkI have owned 3 West Bend coffee pot just like this since 1991each one lasting at least 8 years with heavy use. I purchased my first to make my own coffee to serve at impromptu receptions that I hosted on sight in my sales job. I use a gallon of bottled water, nice paper filters and Maxwell House French Roast coffee. Hundreds of gallons of coffee later I have no complaints! I keep a second pot for teaI have never made coffee in itit is my superior hot water pot. As the other reviewer statesthese pots are hot and the coffee is never cold.

I have thrown parties, family gatherings, and had it in my office serving coffee every day and everyone agreesperked coffee tastes best. I do not care for Starbucks the strong acid is not my thing. I prefer a strong cup of perked coffee. The percolator allows the coffee to actually cook which reduces the acid.Anything leftover from morning gets put into a pitcher and into the fridge for iced coffee in the afternoonit is so yummy! For smaller quantity the Westbend home percolators are greatnot your grandma''s machine they have nice easy to read and follow settings and again the superior flavor over drip. This unit is easy to cleando not let the size intimidate you.

This coffee maker 58030 is far better than was anticipated before having bought it. It has performed well.

As with so many reviews of different items, you truly only know the best reviews of items after a longer period of time.

Reviews later could be quite different than today for anyone.

My only concerns to consider as time passes is the performance of the Faucet lever which could potentially break. Not really confident that the lever will withstand countless usage.May be valid perception, just not quite sure.

Just in case, the lever assembly segment is called, Part # P69-104D

If one day,the lever fails, order the lever earlier as a backup or order the part instead of trashing the entire maker.

Other part numbers to be considered are as followed.

P947-20D is handle kit for two sides with screws

P122-45 is the black colored tray for placing your coffee onto it

L5590 is the operator manual incase you ever would want another.

P172-49D is the stem assembly that stands up inside coffeemaker. The stem kindof looks like a lower quality type of metal and looks gross after a short period of time.

P193-74 is the detachable plug with folks may lose if they were possibly moving to a new home.

P306-2 is that gigantic black cover that turns as a lid.

This feedback is to assist anyone from trashing this beast afterwards.

Coffee tastes well using the West Bend 58030 maker, last cup or two may include grinds residue.

To date, am pleased with this coffeemaker.

I posted the review below some time ago, saying that the product could not be used for heating water. However, I have found that the current models CAN be used for heating water, and my new one is just as good as the one that I had many years ago. Note -the person at customer service told me that the "well" at the bottom needs to be scrubbed frequently in order to keep the water hot.

=====================

I had a similar model that that gave 10 years of excellent service, heating water for tea and keeping it hot for long periods. Unfortunately the spout started to leak so I had to replace it. I used this new product twice, for heating water, and then it died. The customer service reps told me it was designed to be used only for coffee, and they claimed that using it for water actually voided the warranty. My instruction manual did not give any indication at all that the product should not be used for water. It seems to me that, since so many people use these for purposes other than making coffee, and since other brands can be used for these purposes, the description on Amazon.com should disclose that the West Bend has limited uses.

From reading other reviews I wasn''t sure wether it would be suitable for Shabbat or not (i.e keeping it running 24 hours over the sabbath). But after having used it for most of the year, almost every week, it works great. I recommend it as a Shabbat urn (i.e for up to 24 hours use straight).

Mine works just fine I have no complaints, and I recommend it. I do have two things to note, however.

First, the capacity (12-30 cups) is based on the assumption that a cup is 5 ounces in size. That''s really small an official "cup" is 8 ounces, and most people use a 10 ounce coffee mug. So, you should probably think of it as more of an "8-15 cup capacity" machine.

Second, the owner''s manual recommends how much ground coffee to use in the pot these recommendations gave me VERY strong coffee. It may take some experimenting to come up with the right recipe.

GE FXHTC SmartWater Whole House Filter Replacement Cartridge
  • The GE Smart Water FXHTC whole house filter has a granulated activated carbon construction
  • GE FXHTC water filters reduce chlorine taste and odor, sand, soil, silt, sediment and rust
  • The GE FXHTC filter cartridge is resistant to chemicals and corrosion
  • The GE SmartWater FXHTC water filter cartridges fit in whole house water filter systems for 10-Inch x 4.5-Inch water filters
  • Replace the GE SmartWater FXHTC carbon water filter cartridge every 3 months or 5,000 gallons. The time between filter changes will also depend on your water quality

I upgraded my earlier whole house filter to this larger filter/element. My house is piped with a separate water system serving my kitchen area only, and I wanted an element that would easily last a year between replacements, which this does. It is a quality element that has low pressure drop and removes chlorine taste and not just sediment, which is what I wanted. Sediment only filters can be purchased for a lot less than this type filter element. On my first replacement I found that the O-ring that seals the element housing to the pipe manifold had swollen and was far too large in circumference to be re-used. It would not fit back in the groove in order to tighten the housing back to the manifold. Fortunately I had plumbed my new filter with by-pass valves that allow water to continue flowing downstream while replacing the element. So I was able to continue supplying water to my kitchen until I found the replacement O-ring. To my surprise, the big box store that sells the filter does NOT stock the replacement O-rings. I had to go online to find a source and order [I ordered 3 so I would have one on hand while ordering future replacements]. Needless to say, this replacement of the element took several days to conclude. One other caution: do not open the plastic sealed element until you are ready to install it. The cartridge element can absorb odors and fumes from its surroundings and transfer this taste to your water. ALWAYS get a new O-ring when you get ready to replace this element.

This is a good product provided you do not have a lot of water usage. Our home has a well with a high iron content. Keep in mind that this product is for particles, and will not help with odor. We have ours set up as a whole house filter and it provides good filtration. The manufacturer recommends 3 months or 30,000 gallons. We usually get between 2 and 2 1/2 months. Make sure to order O-rings. GE part # WS03X10039. Also, do not over tighten the cartridge holder. It does not take a lot of torque to get good seal.

This FXHTC filter worked great for the filtering aspect, but for our household the pressure drop was too much. Our pre-filter pressure is 60 psi. With this filter in place, showers were the problem -water barely sprayed out of a standard 3 GPM shower head, & god forbid anyone else happened to be using a faucet or running the dishwasher etc. This filter would work great if your water comes in at higher pressures but (as far as I know) 60 psi is a fairly typical pressure. I switched back to the $14 FXHSC filter which has a far less noticeable pressure drop.

The FXHSC is considered a sediment filter. The more expensive FXHTC reduces chlorine and sediment. We live in the Florida Keys and water is piped to us via aqueduct. Chlorine is great against bacteria and mildew but if your skin or airways are sensitive to it, this may be the right filter for you. Reducing the chlorine in the water we wash and bathe with by using FXHTC''s for the last year has noticeably helped with dry, itchy skin and scalp, plus chlorine odors. So if you are feeling that the replacement cost is to much call the 1800 number in your manual thats what I did. That cost includes shipping. It''s like buying two and getting a filter free for every two you buy.

Having lugged 5-gallon water bottles for many years, the ZeroWater system has been a Godsend. We use the larger ZeroWater 2-part container on top of the same watercooler that used the large 5-gallon bottles. That water tastes great and is crystal-clear. My only complaint is the cost of the filters. Brookstone sold the 4-pak for $29.99 last year, but it''s up to $52.99 now which is only a bit cheaper than Home Depot''s $60.00 price. If it weren''t for that high cost, I would have rated the water filtration system 5 stars.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT! I have been using the ZeroWater filters and pitcher for about a year now and I am VERY pleased with the product! I have an incredibly sensitive stomach and can not drink most tap water, including the water where I live, I have previously tried all the other filter pitcher brands and still could not drink the water. I had resorted to buying bottled spring water and it had to be specific brands or I could not drink it either. Then I heard about the ZeroWater filtration system, what a blessing!!! Now I can drink tap water!!! Not only that, but when I travel I take it with me and have been able to drink water everywhere including places where I could not even drink a single SIP before! Yes, the filters are a bit expensive, but it sure beats the cost of bottled water and definitely beats not being able to drink tap water! For me I find I need to replace the filter once every 4 months, but it varies depending on the water you are filtering and how much you have to filter in a day. All in all it''s well worth the expense.

These filters had to be returned, because when I tested them with the Zero Water tester that I already owned, they each tested well into the twenties. Those familiar with Zero Water will know that they actually instruct you to change your filter when it reads "06". I returned them, and, hopefully, the refund will appear on my next credit card statement.

I then ordered new filters from another online store, and they tested at "000". Did the first filters come out of the factory defective? Were they used?

Advice: If you have the tester, use it when you receive your new filters.

I received ZeroWater Replacement filter 4 pack today. The box was not sealed. I opened the foam case and took a filter out and it was still wet. It had been used. I returned it and reported the incident. Be carefull and open your boxes and check to see if filters are used.

Blueair 403 HepaSilent Air-Purification System

Blueair 403 HepaSilent Air-Purification SystemSome of the online specs are misleading. The Blueair 403 unit (at least the one I received) actually has 4 speeds, just like the Blueair 402! Even the manufacturer''s own website as of this review lists it as having only 3 speeds. The only difference between the 402 and 403 is that the 403 comes with a small electronic timer that is magnetic (you can put it on your refrigerator or on the Blueair unit itself) which shows you when 6 months are up and it''s time to replace the filter. This is handy, but not really needed. So, if you can still find a 402 (now discontinued) for a good price, I''d recommend you grab it!

This is a great unit but it is a bit larger than I expected. If you have a small bedroom or office, it may look a bit imposing. It runs very quiet at the two lowest settings and even at the third setting, I found the sound soothing enough to sleep with. In fact, the first night I had it, I put it on the 3 speed setting and found the sound quiet nice and relaxing.

It works very well and is more efficient and quieter than smaller units. The design is also more proven; I compared it with a smaller unit (the 250E) and the 403 works a lot better for a number of reasons (better filter, it pre-charges the particles so that they stick to the filter, and has a larger, thicker filter). The 403 also has a deeper, more soothing and relaxing sound than the smaller unit. Because of the design, you can put things like books on top of it if you want to since it takes in and outputs air from the sides. You can also place it against a wall, something you cannot really do with the smaller 250E unit as it has the filter on the back and outputs air out the top. Also, larger units like the 500 series output air out the top (and sides) so you would not be able to put something on top of those either. I''m not saying I would use my Blueair 403 as a bookshelf or anything, just that it can be convenient to place a magazine or book or two on the top surface at times.

I will now buy a second 403 unit for my living room because I am so impressed. Having two or more of the same series in different rooms throughout the house seems a benefit as you only have one type of filter to buy for them all. However, if your living room is on the large side, you may need a larger unit (such as the 500 series so check your square footage). Note that the 500 series is *much* louder though.

All in all, this is a great unit as it performs very well is *very* quiet and well made. I feel I sleep much better with this unit on and also have much less allergy symptoms including less red and itchy eyes. Even if you don''t suffer from allergies, you can still benefit from having nice fresh air all the time. My guess is that you will sleep better and feel more rested when you wake up. As for myself, the Blueair has practically been a lifesaver-I feel a lot more healthy and my allergy symptoms are virtually gone!

I bought this purifier based on it''s build quality and purification capabilities, and also because of the 10 year warranty stated on the amazon page. The unit is powerful and cleans the air in my bedroom very well within two days, it has completely relieved my sinus problems during this heavy pollen season. It also seems solidly built and it is very silent on the lowest setting (I cannot hear it over the birds chirping outside my closed window).

I would rate this purifier five stars, if the warranty was not a complete scam: it states on the amazon website that there is a 10-year warranty. However, the warranty information that comes with the purifier states that there is only a one-year limited warranty, and that that warranty is only valid if you have proof that you replaced the filter after 6 months. So, if you were not to replace your filter, the warranty would be valid for only 6 months.

You CAN get a 5 year warranty, and even a lifetime warranty, if you become a member of Blueair''s filter subscription program, in which they send you a new filter every 6 months for $59 including shipping. You can do that by sending back their warranty card or by signing up online. I think that this program may make sense for some people, but I want to run this purifier for only about 6 months each year, as I have no sinus problems in the fall/winter, so I will use one filter every year and not one every six months.

You have to dig deep into their warranty policy (also on their web page) to find out that you *MAY* qualify for an extended warranty if you purchase your filters elsewhere and keep the receipts. That wording sounds like the company will decide, though, whether you actually *DO* qualify or not if you need a repair under warranty and have purchased your filters independently.

I find it ridiculous to make the warranty de facto dependent on whether or not you join their subscription program and it is deceiving to state a 10-year warranty on the amazon site when no such warranty exists and when any warranty that extends beyond six months is dependent on the purchase of somewhat costly replacement filters directly from Blueair. While I like this machine, I don''t like to be deceived or suckered into a "free" 5-year warranty that actually costs you quite a bit extra if you do not run this machine full time through the year.

If this company plays dirty little tricks like that upon purchase, I don''t even want to know how great their customer service is when you really have a problem down the line. No blue air for me this baby is going back.

Update September 2012: I ended up keeping this unit, because the only other one that I liked was not available online. I will not change the filters every six months, and, thus, my warranty will expire at the six month date. I posted some pictures of the warranty terms and of the "FREE" 5-year warranty card that came with the unit, just so folks can make an informed decision.

I should start with the fact that everyone in our household has allergies, even the dog I think, but that had not been confirmed. Currently we have the Blueair units in all the bedrooms and family room. The best thing about Blueair units is they work! We really feel a difference. Before getting Blueair my wife was not able to sleep thru the night. She would get congested and her throat would get dry so she kept waking up to drink water. Whatever was giving her trouble is now gone from the air and she is finally able to get a good nights sleep.

Outside the fact that this unit cleans the air, I do also like that it is steel construction ( I did a lot of research and that is hard to find), its quiet!!!, and its energy efficient. As for warranty, the warranty card says mail in for free 5 year warranty.

When my allergist advised I put an air purifier in the bedroom, I wondered how I could find something quiet enough to fall asleep with. He recommended the Honeywells for their air quality, but reviews indicated these were pretty loud.

So, I first purchased the Whirlpool Whispure Air Purifier (AP51030K) based on Consumer Reports and Amazon reviews. From the moment I turned it on, I knew there was no way could I fall asleep with that in the room. Even on the lowest setting, it is quite loud: I could hear it just fine from 30 feet away in another room, through two open doors. In addition, it uses a lot of electricity about 60 watts on the lowest setting. Finally, construction is a bit cheap: plastic and styrofoam.

Further research pointed to the Blueair series as quiet and energy efficient. Of these, the Blueair 403 is ranked the quietest. I ordered it and am very happy. It is extremely quiet on its lowest setting just barely audible from 8 feet away in bed and uses only 20 watts on the lowest setting. It''s solidly constructed of metal, and well worth the higher price vs. the Whirlpool.

Regarding the Blueair 503, which I haven''t tried: The 503 seems to be a better deal (just a little more expensive, rated for 50% more space, and surprisingly cheaper filter replacements). But the 403 is rated much quieter (27db vs 35db on lowest setting). I am considering getting the 503 for the living areas, which are larger and where noise is less of an issue.

Bottom Line: I love the Blueair 403 in my bedroom. The unit is quite large (11d x 20w x 23h), but well worth the space and price given its silence, energy efficiency and stylish construction.

Every morning I woke up with my eyes swollen almost shut due to allergies since I got the Blueair 403 HepaSilent air purification system, my eyes are no longer swollen. My sinus problems have greatly improved. I am very please with how quiet it isI can sleep with it on the 2nd level. I would buy this product again.

Easy Load Reusable No Splash Cap Save 42% Off

Easy Load Reusable No Splash Capit''s poorly executed. I''m unsure of crocks, but a standard cooler has a rod that goes into the water bottle. On the delivery bottles, the rod usually pops a center cap (same place this ball sits) and lets the water flow once the bottle is in the cooler. The cap sits on the rod and the bottle usually will reseal itself if you take it of right. The solution is simple and yet, utterly brilliant. I had thought that this product would have done something similar, but unfortunately, it wasn''t designed exactly right. The shaft that the ball sits in is not long enough to handle most cooler rods and the bottle is wobbling on a ball about a half an inch off of the sides of the cooler bowl that it''s supposed to be flush to. Thankfully, I didn''t try it with a full bottle.

Honestly, I would love to recommend this product. I would LOVE for it to work with the screw cap bottles (48 neck), but while close enough to taste the solution I wanted so bad, this product falls short. DANG! In this case, an extra inch could have made all the difference in the world.

This is a cap for your water jugs that you don''t have to break to get the water out. It doesn''t get water all over the floor, and it is reusable. I have had one of these for 5+ years now. Very durable. I just bought one for each of my relatives who use water jugs with the dispensers.

We have three 5 gallon water jugs in regular rotation, all with screw on caps. I''m 6''4 and 240 lbs, so I''m able to change them out fairly easily without much spilling. But its a huge pain in the butt for anyone else to change the water jugs without making a mess. We''ve tried a few other things that just didn''t help much. I saw these caps in the past but thought 12 bucks (with shipping) was way too much to spend on a bit of plastic. Well, obviously I finally broke down and bought a couple and they work great. I should have bought them long ago and will definitely recommend them to anyone with the screw on cap water bottles.

easy to install and does the job nicely. Perhaps a little leaking as I am putting the bottle in place and it is upside down. But since the bottle is over the water cooler it drips right into the reservoir.

Whynter 5 in 1 Evaporative Air Cooler Save 10% Off

Whynter 5 in 1 Evaporative Air CoolerI bought this based on the other 2 user reviews, and now I''m convinced these were created by the manufacturer.

There''s nothing positive I can say about this product, but as for the negatives...

It has barely any effect on the room temperature when set to air-cooling mode.

It''s extremely loud and obnoxious. Seriously, it sounds just like an idling lawn mower.

Emits a nasty, exhaust-like smell.

Save yourself the time and money, you really don''t want this product at any price.

EDIT (6/10/11): My suspicions about the other 2 reviewers (Ken Manning, Dave Martin) at the time of my purchase can be confirmed by their reviewing and tagging history. Look for yourselfBoth have only reviewed this product (with a raving positive review of course), and have tagged every Whynter product with an assortment of positive/descriptive adjectives. Ken Manning even went so far as to tag several competing products as "defective" and "not cold". Well, I know what brand NOT to trust now.

After reading the other reviews, my story is hardly unique here. The product worked (marginally, I might add) for about 3 weeks before beginning one night to emit a deafening, grinding noise. I disassembled the whole thing to see if I could figure out the problem. Didn''t help. I emailed Whynter customer service and after several back and forth exchanges with basically useless ideas to fix it, I got a return authorization to send it back. I heard absolutely NOTHING from them for over six weeks until I basically hounded them about the whereabouts of my unit. After TWO MONTHS of waiting, it finally arrived again. I plugged it in and was greeted by...THE SAME HORRIBLE NOISE! After over two months, they fixed absolutely nothing. It sucks. They suck. Do yourself a favor and DON''T BUY THIS GARBAGE!

Whynter Air Cooler/Heater/Humidifier

Timeframe: 2 months

My usage conditions: 51F to 78F, Humidity 60% to 80%

Functions used: Heater, evaporative air cooler, humidifier.

Design:

I selected this primarily for the design and color scheme. I did not want another white/beige appliance or some psychedelic blue or pink candy painted device. Conventionally shaped and subtle in overall appearance. Top marks.

Functionality: The Whynter air cooler is a misnomer, while it does a solid job cooling a 150square foot space, it does a whole lot more than cool. The heat was nice to have when the temperature dipped and the humidity control is very useful when dealing with dry air resulting from heater use. Intuitive and easy to control. The water tank at the base take a bit of jiggering to slide in and out but otherwise I do not have any issues with it. The filters built into the unit do provide some degree of purification. My room air purifier lasted about 30% longer before the indicator light came on. It is light weight and portable, but be careful when you move it with the water tank filled.

Quality:

Well built with softtouch controls. The remote control was responsive and fit nicely into the attached holster on the unit. Material is were primarily plastic. Easy to clean and maintain. Pre-filter is easily removed and cleaned. No fuss device.

Price:

Quite reasonable for all that it does. I would take this over 3 or 4 separate devices any day.

Overall:

One of my better purchases this year. top scores across the board.

I just wasted $160 on this piece of junk. It''s loud, poorly made, emits noxious fumes, and is undoubtedly the worst purchase I have ever made. I, too, was suckered in by the positive reviews which are obviously misleading. PLEASE do not make the same mistake as I did by buying this piece of crap.
