Aqua-Pure AP117NP Universal Whole House Filter Replacement Cartridge for Chlorine, Dirt and Rust Reduction, 2-Pack
  • 5 micron nominal filtration
  • Dimensions: 9 3/4" L x 2 5/8" W
  • Long life graded density pre-filter
  • Specially formulated high-absorption activated carbon
  • Cold water only

When I need to replace the filter for my cuno whole house filter system. I use the Aqua Pure filter. It eliminates all the chlorine from my water and I have the best water around. Without this filter all you smell is the chlorine. I hated taking showers or cooking when my filters ran out. They tend to be more expensive then anything I could find at the local home improvement stores but, the quality of the filter is far more superior than anything these stores carried.

It doesn''t appear to filter as well as advertised. My water has a brown hue out of the tap, I expected the product to remove that residue and it doesn''t. I would not purchase this particular filter again. I would purchase the brand but a different model. I purchased the NP model but the filter i received did not have the NP at the end, this may be my problem as I have used Aqua-pure filters in the past without a problem.

Iv''e used these filters for years and they work efficiently. 5 micron pre filter built in. You must flush out new filters until water turns clear.

I think it''s working. It seems to filter the rust and chlorine, but I don''t know. I have another filter I put in before it to filter the rust, and it''s always dark rusty looking. This filter also looks a bit rusty. I have extremely rusty water coming in from the ancient pipes under the street in front of my house. I don''t have any way of determining whether or not it''s working, though. I gave it four stars because it''s kinda pricey at more than twenty dollars for each filter, and they only last six months.

Aprilaire #4226 Feed Tube

Aprilaire #4226 Feed TubeMy Aprilaire feed tube was leaking -I have no idea why. So I had to contemplate whether to have a service man come and make the repair or do it myself. The kit arrived with everything I needed to to the job and I succeeded in no time at all in stopping the leak and at a fraction of the cost.

A small filter (not shown in picture) was supplied which didn''t fit my shutoff, but everything else was great. I had tried to clean out the old tube with a metal coat hanger but all I succeeded in doing was break the old feed tube. Replacement fit perfectly.

Frigidaire FRA052XT7 5,000-BTU Mini Window Air Conditioner

Frigidaire FRA052XT7 5,000-BTU Mini Window Air Conditioner
  • 5,000 BTU cooling capacity
  • Cools room sizes up to 150 sq. ft.
  • 2-way air direction control
  • Anti-bacterial mesh filter type, side slide-out filter access
  • Rotary controls

I spent quite a bit of time researching A/C before purchasing. We live in Oregon and it doesn''t get too hot but there''s a month or two in the summer where the heat and humidity get oppressive in the house. I wanted an inexpensive, small, window A/C to increase the comfort. I wanted something small enough that I can store it the other 10 months.

So, after much research I ordered this model. I was going to get the 6K BTU model with the electronic controls but I figured I would get something super cheap and if it didn''t work I could use it as a single room cooler. Shipped free which makes this a pretty good deal. Arrived in about a week.

Installation was easy, following the instructions in the manual. I did have to install and remove the A/C about 3 times to get all the sealing right. In the box there''s a lot of different thicknesses of foam and foam tape. There is no specific instructions about what to do with this, except the stuff for the top gap of the upper sash. So, I experimented with various combos to get a good seal. We have recent vinyl windows with screens but no storms so the unit basically dropped right in. However, there are some gaps around the bottom in this configuration. I stuffed these with the thickest foam that came with the unit. This did the trick but didn''t look too great. Luckly I ordered extra foam tape as another reviewer recommended, and I used small pieces of that to caulk around it inside and outside, leaving the big foam inside. It actually looks pretty neat and professional. $4 well spent ;)

Anyway, the unit is installed in our main living room. We are in a 1940''s box bungalow so this room is about half of the width and length of the house. The bedrooms and kitchen connect to it. With it on HI cool/Max(7) the entire house has been very cold and huge amounts of water have been pulled out. We will see how it performs in the upcoming week of 95+ temps. We keep a few $10 box fans around to circulate air so I can move the cold air around.

One thing is that I have heard mentioned on a few other models is that the fan catches water in the pan and spits it around. This is a feature and not a bug ;). The unit is designed to pitch backward slightly when properly mounted. Moisture removed from the room collects at the bottom. The fan blade is coated in rubber and it''s designed to suck water up and spray it on the evaporator coils. This facilitates some precooling of the outside air. It drastically increases efficiency. I would not drill drain holes, as other people have mentioned.

Summary:

$100, and my house is cold AND quiet. You can''t say much more. If it''s not enough for the hottest day I might get one more and move them to the bedrooms. It''s very quiet on low but I like white noise.. I hope it lasts, even if it doesn''t I''d gladly pay another $100 in 2 years.

I have run this all summer, purchasing it about five months ago.

It has been a relatively mild summer with only 12 days over 100 degrees.

Pros -

Easy to Install

Excellent Size for Small Windows

Fairly Quite to run (would not bother me if I slept in my office)

Keeps my office 11x14 frigidly cold when set on max (temp 7 of 7)

..(takes about 8 hours to cool down a hot room with the door closed)

..(I keep it on 5 out of 7 on the temp gauge, that even gets a little cold at times)

Cons -

The Directional Air Flow vents are poor

Not much difference between the High Cold/Fan settings and Low Cool/Fan settings

When rain blows against the unit the accordion extensions collect a little water along the bottom

I am considering getting two or three more for my house next summer.

I had one of my Frigidaire window units at the house die this year, it was twelve years old.

**UPDATE**

September 22, 2011

One year later to the date. No this was not planned. This little unit lasted through another summer, and this one was not so mild. I lost count of the days over 100 degrees. I did not buy any more for my house, as I moved into a new home with central air. This unit does however continue to cool my office as it was purchased for.

It was stored all winter in the utility closet off my office (i.e. indoors, warm, and dry). It was washed down with a power washer before being re-installed in the window this year.

Pros -

Excellent Size for Small Windows (I am still amazed I found a unit that fit)

Fairly Quite to run (I don''t notice it running anymore, and no customers have complained)

It can still freeze me and my customers out when set on max temp (7)

..(I timed it again and it still takes about 8 hours to cool down a 11x14 hot room)

Cons -

The Directional Airflow vents are very poor (they are basically useless)

Still not much difference between the High and Low settings

..(I fixed the rain issue above by using plexiglass this year)

Rust has started to form on the outside grill and corners where the condensation drops

For those of you wondering, the reduced star is because of the directional airflow issues. Another review mentioned the styrofoam can be seen, and was probably used to fill the gaps. This is true but after two years it still seems to be in good shape. It also appears to be fairly thick. Some other items I tested this year...

Room size 11x14 (left on this setting for 24 hours before temperature was measured)

Average outside temperature during this week of tests was 98 degrees.

Setting Cool/High 7 brought the room to 58 degrees, outside temperature 98

Setting Cool/High 5 brought the room to 63 degrees, outside temperature 96

Setting Cool/High 3 brought the room to 74 degrees, outside temperature 100

Setting Cool/High 1 brought the room to 89 degrees, outside temperature 99

All temperatures were read at 4pm.

**Please note this was my unit''s performance. Yours may differ.

Yesterday it was put back in storage until next year. I considered getting a sound level meter or loudness level meter to measure the actual noise my unit puts out, but I have not got around to that yet. Maybe next year.

I got it hoping it would keep my apartment cool-ER. I expected it to keep it comfortable, not cold. I also had a bit of a problem with size. The only window that opens in my house is a vertical sliding window, which Air Conditioners I can afford, aren''t made for.

Once I received it, I started to assemble and install. Originally I was going to leave the extensions off, since my window was only 18 inches wide, but after I got it and thought about it more, I realized they could still help keep it supported. So I put them on. They are about an inch inside the window, to help it from falling out. Also, I originally hoped to buy some wood and put that above it, but once I saw how sturdy it was with just the extensions, I put cardboard above it and plastic taped around the edges with duct tape. Very red neck, I know. It''s sealed with the help of some other bits that came with it to help seal it.

I installed it a little over 12 hours ago and my home is cold. I live in a house above a garage. Just a large living room, average bathroom and small bedroom. It''s 621 SQ Feet.(assuming I did the math correctly. 23 x 27 feet.) This is total, but there are 3 separate rooms here. (Also, I have a low ceiling, only 6.5 Feet.) I placed it in my only opening window in the living room and it keeps the bathroom cold which is closest, and my bedroom pretty cold too, which is farthest. A lot larger than advertised for. I didn''t care, I needed a little cooler than I had. Before, it was hotter inside than it was outside. I have it on high, but will consider turning it down, which I never thought I would do. I like the cold. It''s THAT cold.

For $110, I got an amazing air conditioner that perform WAY better than expected/advertised and it got here exceptionally fast too. It arrived 4 days after I ordered it with standard shipping and handling. I am a very happy costumer.

Want Frigidaire FRA052XT7 5,000-BTU Mini Window Air Conditioner Discount?

Frigidaire''s warranty is a lie. They won''t service a defective unit.

The manual says the product has a one year parts and labor Warranty and a five year compressor warranty. Mine went bad after 10 days. It took 5 phone calls and three hours on the phone with Frigidaire to be told that they do not service Air Conditioner units of 5000 BTU or less. Their ONLY solution is to return the item to Amazon or to where ever it was purchased. I relied upon their Frigidaire''s written warranty and disposed of the box, thinking that if anything went wrong they''d come out and fix it. Fortunately Amazon will send a replacement unit and I''ll use that box to return the defective one. However that solution won''t work if the unit goes bad after six months. Then you''ll be stuck with a company that won''t honor its'' written warranty.

Don''t Buy This Frigidaire Air Conditioner.

If you''re like me, when you''ve been out shopping, say Walmart, Sears, or some of the other places you might have noticed, especially in the hot summer time, these smaller cheaper A/C window units on store shelves. For the most part, they''ve looked cheap and I''ve never seriously considered buying one as my standards are a bit higher.

However, here we are, summer 2010, NE Kansas and the temps are rough, especially in my back room. I had to do something.

This is where this little gem fits it.

Spending a bit of time doing some research on getting the right Window A/C unit for my room at a price point I could afford, brought me here. In short, I have to more than agree to everyone''s positive review on this item.

This thing screams quality. The boxing / packaging is great. The fit and finish of the unit is perfect. Some very skilled design and workmanship went into this A/C. You could honestly not ask or expect any better. People are saying this thing cools down 2 or 3 rooms with ease. My application will just be one med size bedroom. So far, I have it set to low cool on 3 or 4 and the room is night and day different in terms of comfort.

I paid $126 for this unit off eBay. I was saddened to find it for $100 shipped elsewhere which, they have in stock. Do a google search for "Conn''s Frigidaire FRA052XT7" and the product will pop right up for you. It''s $89 there with $10 dollars 3 5 day shipping.

For the money, the weight of the unit, the fit and finish, name brand, etc. This is about the best investment I''ve made in sometime. Hats off to the folks at Frigidaire. I mean really, I just cannot put this fantastic product / experience into the words they deserve.

I wish I had Bill Gates money, the first thing I would do would be to order 500,000 of these units, sit up a Midwest distribution center with offices and coordinate with local and national cities that account for some of the highest heat related deaths and get these cherished older generations who we owe everything to, these people with out means who are dieing of heat and get them this A/C. Box fans do not cut it.

I got this system for the tough Tijuana water which is microbiologically clean, but has too much chemicals and low water pressure. The installation went straight forward and took about 90 minutes. My only con (thus 4 stars) is the instructions had many errors but with a little common sense I figure it all out. After 3 full tank cycles the water came out crystal clear and with no taste or smell. Just remember to test your water pressure before you buy. Most RO systems need 40 to 50 psi to work. Mine was around 55 so no booster pump needed. Overall, great little well built system.

I had been using a GE two stage system for several years and the shutoff valve started to leak. After many attempts to repair it and finding out the part was $135.00 plus tax and shipping I decided to replace the whole system. I was happy with the GE and its quality seemed ok. I had a plumber install the GE because some parts of the installation was really difficult.. attaching the lines to the faucet was a nightmare, partly because of the design and partly because of its hard to reach location. I installed the Watt myself. It was a straightforward process and took about an hour. The hoses and connectors on the Watt seemed better.. and the overall quality of the Watt system seemed as good or better than the GE. The water quality is great.. I had paid $250 for the GE system several years ago.. the Watt was $169.. and its a three stage system vs a two.. and.. the water holding tank is bigger. I am very happy with this product. I only gave it 4 stars because they do not provide a filter wrench with the product. They say you get one when you buy a filter pack.

We just purchased the Watt 4-Stage filter. We were concerned about the difficulty of installation and quality of water. The installation was easier than we thought probably because my husband actually read the directions first (don''t tell him I said that, apparently reading the directions is considered a sign of weakness). We were also concerned about how the water would taste. We live in Southern California and the water is horrible. Neither one of us could drink it from the tap and had to order bottled water. The filtered water is now sweet and great tasting. The only annoying thing is the hissing sound it makes after filling a glass. That is why I only gave it 4 stars. If this will bother you I would suggest a different filter. Overall great water for the price!

This is an awesome little RO system. When set up properly it makes "NO noise" and is completely silent! We set this little system up in our RV. It fits nicely under the sink and there is still plenty of room for necessities. To make the system silent, all you have to do is by-pass the "Air Gap" portion of the faucet by not utilizing the RED and BLACK lines on the faucet. This gets rid of the hissing sound that plagues some of these faucets. All you need is the BLUE line from the tank to the faucet. Also, I mounted the "Drain Saddle" to the vent pipe under the sink. This puts the water/brine from the "RED Waste Water" line into the drain pipe behind the grease trap. By mounting the saddle in this fashion, crud cannot back up into the "Drain Saddle" and the "running water" or "gurgling" sound cannot be heard because it is not mounted in the sink drains. The only part I needed to do this was a "Union" that I picked up at Home Depot for $3.50. Watts part #109. This "Union" is to join the 1/4" RED line and 3/8" BLACK line together before the 3/8" BLACK line goes into the "Drain Saddle".

The water out of this little system is great and I would recommend it to anyone! Because it is made by Watts, it should be easy to find filters in the years to come.

Installation was pretty easy, though the instructions are highly unprofessional. I really expect a company of this size to be able to print illustrations in the correct resolution. The diagrams in these instructions looked as if they had been printed from a low resolution GIF image on the web and then photocopied into the book. The device produces a surprisingly loud hissing noise while the tank is filling. I bought this primarily to filter silicates out of my drinking water for filling my aquarium, so I get to listen to the thing hiss for two or three hours while it fills. I have gotten accustomed to it, though.

All was great for the first three months after installation. Now the filtered water seems to be dramatically less pure than the unfiltered water. Suddenly, the golden diatom activity in my aquarium shot through the roof, and water changes using the filtered water seem to make it worse instead of better. The water in my espresso machine''s reservoir smells awful after only a few hours (and yes, I''ve cleaned it over and over). If it were possible, I would say that the filtered water is going down the drain and the wastewater is what''s going into the tank. I am going to disconnect this RO system and try another.

I usually get Pur water filters for my faucet. The water tastes delicious (especially the 3-stage one), but I''ve had to replace two of them because they break after a few months. A hole will form usually on the red area that tells you when to replace the filter (water spews everywhere). I wanted to try a different brand that won''t break after a few months. This brand is more affordable and it was very easy to install. The water definitely tastes better than plain tap water and does its job to filter out bad things. I''m just honestly not used to the taste yet. To me, it doesn''t taste as good as Pur. However, it''s designed well and probably will last.

Philips Saeco Vienna Plus Automatic Espresso Machine Save 39% Off

Philips Saeco RI9737/20 Vienna Plus Automatic Espresso Machine, SilverI recently purchased a Vienna Superautomatica as an inexpensive second espresso maker. The first thing I noticed is that it is Italian made like many of the great espresso machines. The body of the Vienna is "graphite" plastic, and while it does not feel first class, it somehow has a pretty sturdy feel to it. I also like that the footprint is pretty small thus taking up little counter space.

I opened the manual, which is not particularly clear, but need not be on account of very simple operation. The Vienna has three buttons--on/off, coffee, and steam. It also has a steamer control knob and a water volume knob.

I turned on the machine after filling the coffee and water tanks. The buttons feel Italian--you''ll know what I mean if you''ve owned an Alfa Romeo. They are a bit clunky next to my old Capresso C1000, but they work well (for now).

The Vienna takes a couple of minutes to warm up--I don''t mind this for reasons I''ll reveal in a minute. The coffee spout is adjustable up and down to accommodate a large variety of cups and mugs. Once it''s ready, the coffee light stops blinking. I push the button and it begins to grind the coffee. The noise level of the machine is louder than my Capresso, but not too bad. You might wake up the house with it in the morning, but my child stayed asleep. Once the coffee finishes the grind, the Vienna immediately begins making espresso.

My first impression was that I saw a lot more steam coming from the coffee than my Capresso. I am hopeful. The coffee also looked a bit thicker than the Capresso. After the Vienna finished I observed the cup: nice crema, plenty hot, and smells like the genuine article. I gave it a taste--wow, step aside Capresso, this espresso is richer, hotter, and a lot closer to coffee bar espresso. Next I took a sip. Ah yes, the cup holds rich chocolatey espresso. If you are sort of a coffee snob, you''ll like what you taste. The coffee is much richer than the Capresso, which I attribute to hotter water and fuller extraction.

I''m sure that the Vienna will not make good enough espresso for some folks, but to me, it still tastes better than Starbucks. It was more than $100 cheaper than my Capresso and frankly makes better espresso. I cannot yet speak to the durability of the machine, but the Vienna is now my favorite inexpensive espresso maker.

Vienna Plus is my third fully automatic machine. I loved my first, Saeco original Vienna, hated the second, Saeco Incanto classic. The original Vienna worked for 3 years every day, making consistently good espresso before the pump gave. I should have paid for repair, but I succumbed to that stainless steel twinkle and went for Saeco Incanto classic. More expensive for sure. Worse, better said inconsistent, coffee quality, constant small problems relating to built quality concerning the brew group, the grinder and the steamer wand. After a year of irritation a pump seal has failed while making espresso, nothing like a small explosion in the kitchen in the morning, I tell ya. Well, gone back to the trusted Vienna, now with the plus in the name. Good old days are here again .... Compared to previousit is a lot quieter, when both grinding and steaming, it is also a lot quicker to warm up then before, steam is ready a mere 15 seconds after pushing the button. Espresso has a beautiful rich crema right out of the box, I didn''t have to experiment with grind setting at all. The steaming wand (Panarello) has been redesigned and is now foolproof maker of perfect frothed foam. For the newbie I would like to add that I spent a lot of effort to find the right roast tasted more than a few before I settled on one (Peerless Coffee Espressp Perfection) that I buy now in 5 lb. bags and keep in the freezer. I should for fairness add that I never want any other coffee through the machine like some decaf or flavored stuff, so I don''t miss the alternate ground coffee option that Incanto had. My priority has always been flavor and consistency and that the Vienna Plus delivers. My friends drive miles to "see me" and, by the way, get a cup of espresso, praising each one as "this is the best espresso in the world". If that is what you desire, don''t get mesmerized by stainless steel shine or computerized display magic and save yourself some money by getting this machine. You won''t regret it. And I am unanimous in that. ;)

We owned a Saeco Vienna Deluxe since January 2004, but decided to purchase a newer model in September 2010. The Vienna Deluxe served us well for six and a half years, but was beginning to show its age. The Saeco Vienna Plus is the updated version of the Vienna Deluxe.

Saeco''s Vienna Plus super-automatic espresso machine is simple to use. Add up to 57 oz filtered cold water to the reservoir, up to 12 oz beans in the hopper, and then turn the machine on. While warming up, adjust the volume dial for a 1 to 6 oz pour. Once ready, press the coffee button once to make an espresso or twice for a double shot or two espressos. If a latte is desired, press the steam button after the espresso has finished brewing and turn the steam knob to activate the pannarello to steam the milk. Turning the steam knob without pressing the steam button will produce hot water from the pannarello instead.

The perfect espresso may require adjusting a couple dials in the hopper. A strength dial controls the amount of grounds used per cup. A second knob controls the grind''s coarseness. These settings are typically adjusted once then left alone if you chose to alter the factory setting. The factory settings work well for us, so we didn''t adjust these controls.

Maintaining and cleaning the Vienna Plus espresso machine is just as simple. Cleaning consists of a weekly (or after every 15 pucks) wipe down of the machine, rinsing off the brew group with warm water, and emptying and washing the drip tray and grounds drawer. Incidentally, the used coffee grounds are beneficial to soil when spread out in the gardens or lawn. Once every three months, running descaler through the boiler keeps the inner workings in good condition.

A common complaint about Saeco Vienna espresso machines is the outer plastic cabinet. The durable plastic cabinet was not a problem for us on the old machine, as it didn''t chip, crack, or break with normal use. The Veinna Plus uses the same plastic material for the outer cabinet, and is probably used to keep the cost down. The internal workings, like the stainless steel boiler, are hidden from view and use more expensive materials.

Another complaint I''ve read about is the grinder getting clogged. Our local coffee shop advised us not to purchase oily beans like many flavored coffees. If you enjoy flavored coffee, add syrup to the cup instead. Choosing the right beans, and regular cleanings has kept us from experiencing this problem.

Compared to the Vienna Deluxe, the Vienna Plus super-automatic espresso machine has an updated look, but operates the same and is similarly sized. However the Vienna plus is quieter, and the pannarello has been improved for easier and more consistent frothing.

Ultimately, the Vienna Plus super-automatic espresso machine is simple to use and maintain; plus produces a great tasting espresso and Americano. If you''re looking for a fully automatic espresso machine, this one is definitely worth considering.

PROS:

Fresh quality coffee made at the press of a button

Makes consistently great tasting coffee/espresso

Simple to use

Easy to clean/maintain

Biodegradable waste is great for the garden

CONS:

This espresso machine is sure to spoil its owners

Cannot handle large quantities quickly

We had a Saeco Vienna Deluxe for several years. The machine finally died on us. In searching for a new machine, I saw the Saeco Vienna Plus and knew this would be the next machine. It is very similar to our previous model. It is much cheaper than when we had purchased our first unit. I feel there is value in what we are getting. It saves us a fortune from having to run to the more expensive coffee shop chains to pick up a mocha when it can easily made at home. At the touch of a button or two, the coffee is ready to go. The ease of use is amazing. Clean up is easy. I would definitely recommend this machine for those who want to be able to make espresso with ease.

Want Philips Saeco Vienna Plus Automatic Espresso Machine Discount?

Overall, I cannot recommend this machine.

The machine made excellent espresso for the first few weeks we had it. Once it was broken in, the espresso was average, and the crema was more of a large-bubbled foam. The grinder is able to create a fine grind, but unfortunately the machine can''t pass any water through it, so you have to use a mid-level fine grind. The machine is able to adjust the amount of water used per shot, but anything more than the smallest available setting creates, well, coffee. Not even an Americano, just coffee.

After three months the grinder broke. When I opened up the machine''s door a broken part flew out. Amazon sent me a new one. One month in on the new one, the brewgroup jammed. I thought it was broken, but after four days, the machine was able to pry itself loose. Ground coffee was all over the brewgroup, as if it had exploded. We''ll see how it works out.

A bright spot--Amazon was astoundingly helpful and gracious. They replaced the first one, postage payed, express delivery, with no questions at all. They offered to refund the original purchase price on the second one, until it broke loose and started working again. I cannot complement them highly enough!

Lasko 1115 3-Gallon Evaporative Recirculating Humidifier

Lasko 1115 3-Gallon Evaporative Recirculating HumidifierI have been through about 4-5 humidifiers in the last couple of years. My main complaints were noise (especially the boiling sound of the warm mist types), dirtiness after a few days of operation, and difficulty cleaning units. I decided to take another gamble with this humidifier--and it really paid off. I was afraid that the recirculating feature would be just another gimmick, but I can certainly tell the difference.

Pros:

Easy to fill

Easy to clean

Weekly cleanings are fine--could probably even go longer

The machine doesn''t seem to get very dirty--recirculating water keeps deposits from forming

Humidifies the air well

Quiet operation (just the sound of the fan)

Long filter life

Cons:

Can''t really think of any other than I can''t buy the filters locally

I highly recommend this product!

I''ve had a lot of crappy humidifiers in all price ranges, but this one seems to do what it''s supposed to do. It''s been on constantly now for a month, and seems to be pumping out ample humidity without dampening a single thing around it or emitting scary white dust. Amazing! The replacement filters are also cheap, which is great.

Cons: A bit loud, seems to need filling a lot even on the lowest setting (but very easy fill can bring pitcher to it rather than drag tank to the sink and lug back), and above all, big and ugly my husband calls it an aircraft carrier, I think it''s more like a urinal. But really, those are not deal breakers to me. I''m just happy to find something that works like it''s supposed to! yay!

This humidifier worked great...when it worked properly. It has sprung a leak on us a couple times, luckily we noticed it as soon as we turned it on. Last night, we were not so lucky and about an hour after we had turned it on, I noticed the carpet all around it was SOAKED. There is a section underneath the refill window where two pieces of plastic come together...that is where the water would leak from. It was not every time we ran it, but after last night and it soaking our carpet, it is being returned! It was nice when it worked, especially nice feature to refill it from the top, but we clearly received a defective one! I have also wondered from the beginning whether we received a ''new'' or returned humidifier...filter was not nice and white/clean!

The Pro''s:

This thing can add a lot of humidity in a relatively short period of time. It had no problem maintaining 50-60% humidity on the medium setting in our 1800 sq ft home.

The front fill panel makes it super easy to grab your plant watering can and add a half gallon or so as needed. This is good because even on medium it can empty the resevoir in less than 24 hours.

Easy to clean/maintain and the Lasko filters are cheaper than most

The Nuetral''s:

As with most humidifiers the "high" setting is too loud to reasonably use unless you are quickly trying to add humidity while your not home.

As with most humidifiers the 3 gallon rating is the max moisture it can add to the air in a 24 hour period. It only holds 1.75 so you have to fill relatively often in the winter when the heater is constantly working against you.

The Con''s:

This unit does not have Auto-shutoff. It uses a pump to keep the filter moist and generally keep the water moving to help prevent mold/bacteria. This is great, but if you let it run dry the pump is toast.

If you over-fill it the fan motor is toast and I was never able to find the fill line that the manual indicates the unit has so I probably tended to underfill it.

The fill door, while very convenient, has a major design flaw. If you fill it while it''s running (and I always did...the manual says not to, but i''m sure everybody does) there is a likelyhood that some water from the running pump will trickle out and down the side while you are filling. This seems minor, but once that trickle starts its like starting a siphon...it just keeps going until it''s empty. Twice my unit slowly emptied itself onto the floor over the course of several hours. The first time I noticed and shut it off...the 2nd time was overnight and once it ran out of water the pump burnt out.

I''d consider 18 months of near constant use pretty reasonable for a $45 product so I gave 3 stars despite the design flaws...just keep an eye on it.

I liked the idea of an Evaporative Recirculating Humidifier. Of course, the 3 Gallon capacity is bull squat. Ad doesn''t mention filling it twice a day. Had same Leak Problem as others. Worked great, filter a great idea, Then: The great leak on my carpet. I thought I screwed up and became extremely diligent in following all the rules. Don''t overfill, Be sure to turn off unit before filling, Keep unit level. Worked fine, and then the same thing. It Leaked.Really liked the unit and didn''t want the hassle of returning the unit. SOLVED the Problem by placing the Unit inside of a Litter Pan. Got one from Big Lots for 6.00, measures about 14 x 17 X 4" High. The Unit perfectly. Now, if it leaks again, the water stays inside the Litter pan.

Then I got smart and contacted the manufacturer @ 1-800-233-0268. Described my problem, and discovered a missing part. They sent me a plastic insert that fits onto a lower track just inside the front creme panel. The insert has a groove that slides over this inside track. Do not try to attach to the clear panel. The clear panel is designed to press against it when closed. Finally, Problem solved.

Holmes HWF100-UC3 Humidifier Replacement Filter Save 43% Off

Holmes HWF100-UC3 Humidifier Replacement Filter, Set of 3I bought a bionaire humidifier that uses 2 of these wicks. They''re a necessary evil, because the humidifer wont work without them.

My humidifier (a Bionaire BCM645) is basically a glorified self-refilling water bowl, with a pair of wicks dangling down into the water in the lower backside of the unit ... the wicks absorb water upwards, and the humidifier (basically a vertical tube with an exhause fan up up equipped with a humidistat) draws airflow in crosswise through the body of the wicks down below in order to blow humidified air out the top ... it''s a simple design that sorta works.

The problem is that mineral deposits build up in these glorified (and overpriced) sponges, and they lose their ability to wick water upwards fast enough to keep up with the rate of evaporation ... the result is that they become dried out and crusty (and slowly stained with mildew), and only stay wet on the part that''s dipped in the water.

Now, here''s the annoying part, and why I only gave this product 3 of 5 stars ... they''re needlessly fragile by design. The manufacturer WANTS you to keep reguloarly buying replacement sponges, just like inkjet printer manufacturers want to keep selling you overpriced ink cartridges. Even though I have fairly soft water, and use a carbon block filter, these wicks only seem to last me about 2 weeks per pair, by default, before they lose their ability to absorb/wick moisture and/or fall apart. Perhaps someday someone will make longer-lasting reuseable cloth replacement filters, but as of this writing, there dont appear to be any available ... because it''s against the manufacturer''s fiscal interests to make and sell such.

You can save money 2 ways:

1) SHOP AROUND: you can save as much as 50% by shopping around for the cheapest supplier, and scoffing at any implied manufacturer product loyalty. How ? The replacement filters for Holmes (HWF100) and Bionaire (BWF100) are functionally identical and interchangeable. They come 6 to a package (3 pairs).

2) RINSING: These wicks are rather fragile resist the urge to wring them out when rinsing them, or you''ll damage them. Instead, fill a sink with body-temperature water, let them soak for 5-10 mins (to let the deposits soften & par-dissolve), then gently press them flat (while submerged) a few times. Then drain them (dont wring them) and reinstall. That should extend their performance by another week or so. Each subsequent rinse will yeild only half the benefit though. At best, you''ll be able to double their lifespan.

Bottom line: I dont really recommend these wicks ... but if your humidifier requires them, there isnt much choice. However, if you use the tips I listed above, you can save up to half the cost, and make them last as much as twice as long.

This was delivered 2 weeks later than promised and it is not the same filter as shown in the photo. It is a cheaper version and did not have the round button attached to the filter like the original has. It had a plastic square that could be attached anywhere but really won''t stay put when attached so I just left it off.

Fortunately, just by stuffing the new filter into my machine, it worked Ok. I really hate returning stuff. It is just frustrating when they show a picture and you receive something else.

I have had a Holmes tower humidifier for several years and it requires two of the HWF100 filters. This particular model forces air through the bottom at the back and through the filters out the top. I guess like most filters, the top of the filter dries out quicker than the bottom where water is absorbed. To get a longer life from the filters I reverse the filters top to bottom about 2 times per week. This extends the life of the filter about 2 times. Other brand filters don''t live up to the quality of the Holmes HWF100. Prices vary so shop around.

Aprilaire 45 Replacement Water Pad

Aprilaire 45 Replacement Water Pad- Twin Pack
  • Fits Space-Gard/Aprilaire furnace humidifier models 400, 400A, and 400M.
  • Space-Gard/Aprilaire furnace humidifier filters (evaporator pads).
  • Measures approximately 9 7/8" x 12 7/8" x 1 3/4".
  • 2 wick filters per pack.
  • Honeycomb filtration to trap mineral pollutants found in water and help prevent them from entering your home.

This replacement filter fits the Aprilaire 400 humidifier and is cheaper (including shipping) than purchasing from aprilaire''s website (even though they have free shipping).

That being said, this replacement filter is grossly overpriced for what it is. Clearly a profit center for Aprilaire.

I have ordered this part before and have had no issues with this seller. Product arrived quickly.

There''s not much to say about the filters. They are the manufacturer''s replacement unit and do their job. The service from Filters-Now was very good with fast delivery. I won''t hesitate to order from them again, either directly or through Amazon. The price seems high for a simple paper and metal filter, but it''s clearly a profit center for the manufacturer. The price from this vendor was much better than from others I found.

Purchased this for my in law''s aprilaire 400 and it fits perfectly. No instructions needed to change it just remove the cover, pull out the holder, pull out the water tube from the holder and unclip the top of the holder from the bottom (one clip on each side). Reverse that to put it back together and reset the ''change water pad'' indicator. One thing I wasn''t sure about was whether the twin pack was really for two changes, or whether I need to use both for one change of the water pad, but as it turns out, only one is needed to change the water pad, so the twin pack is good for two changes.

I''d suggest to cycle the humidifier back on with the cover off and watch it for a few mins just to make sure you put everything back together properly and it''s working as needed (it takes a while for the water to absorb into the pad when you watch it). Also a good time to check the float valve switches to make sure they''re functioning, not stuck, etc... just lift up on the little tip of the valve switch (there are two, at the bottom of the pan) and the water should shut off .. switch should move freely.

We got timely shipping on this item.

Good luck!

Thia Aprilaire 45 Replacement Water PadTwin Pack [Misc.] that they describe on Amazon might not be what you receive. They describe the pads as 13.5" X 10.5". They also say it is a "twin pack" which, in actuality is two pads that are actually 7.5" x 9.5" each.

When I put the two pads together I got 15" X 9.5". I cut the 15" down to 13.5", which I needed. I am short in the other direction. I need 10" and have 9.5".

I am not happy with the way the vendor describes it versus what I actually received.

UPDATE 2/17/2012

After contacting seller concerning the above problem, they replied very quickly. Withing a few days i did get the correct item. The new pads fit perfectly.

The seller was obviously concerned that the wrong item was sent and wanted to rectify the problem immediately. For this reason I am changing my 1 star to five.

I was very satisfied with my Aprilaire Replacement Water Pads from this company and will order again in the near future from them

This is a very simple always ready (not always on) tds meter. I had an old RO system and this showed me it was only dropping the TDS by 90-100 ppm (e.g. 300 ppm in, 200 ppm-210ppm out) while the "hard" water at my parents'' house 5 miles away was 100 ppm! The result was a purchase of a new RO system with some enhanced features.

What broke was the ability to switch from IN (feedwater) to OUT (RO water) without powering off and back on. For the first month you could slide the switch from in to out and the display would change. Later that quit and it became necessary to power it off and back on.

Still at the pricepoint its a good value a good design (the probes mimic 1/4" tubing and it uses off the shelf T connectors to ensure leak free joints). Its accurate compared to my more expensive TDS meter and will now allow me to keep an eye on the RO system.

BTW new RO system has 300 ppm feedwater from the city well system (and clear filter housings so you can see all the junk being trapped in the first 2 days) it''s getting the same 300 ppm IN and yielding 15 ppm 16 ppm out which is the best i''ve seen. Most RO water systems do good at 40 out so I was impressed with 15-16 ppm.

Without the DL-1 you''d never know when to change filters etc. It''s worth buying and the power on/off is no big deal since it times out anyways. If I bought one again I''d get the DL-2 which amazon doesn''t sell now.

FYI the system I finally chose to buy was the 100 GPD Reverse Osmosis 6 Stage Permeate Pump & UV sterilizer

There is no reason not to give this product the highest rating. The price was right, it does exactly what it is supposed to do and it is easy to install. The meter is simple to install; I have mine mounted with clamps right onto the side of the RO gland. Simply push the button for power and select, back and forth if you wish, the input water TDS or the output water reading. The display is easy to read and it turns off by itself. I personally like to stay in the habit of manually turning off equipment when not needed. I checked it with a professional meter and the readings were identical. It is so convenient to use, allowing frequent checks that will keep the water quality up. Don''t be surprised, it is smaller than one would expect, but not a problem, its still easy to read from an arms length.

Black & Decker CM1509 8-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker

Black & Decker CM1509 8-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker with Thermal CarafeThere are so many things wrong with this coffeemaker that I don''t know where to start. I wanted to like it my husband and daughter bought it when she and other family were in town visiting and our Braun coffeemaker stopped working. That was Mothers Day. I finally gave up yesterday, three months later. Here are the problems:

1. Weak coffee. There are two kinds of coffee drinkers in America: "is that tea or coffee, Mom?" coffee drinkers and coffee shop coffee drinkers. Yes, there really is a difference, and it begins with strength of the coffee (along with being freshly brewed, good quality beans, clean equipment, and, in most places, filtered water). But I digress. If you''re OK with Aunt Mildred''s coffee, you may be OK with this machine. It evidently pushes the heated water through the grounds too fast. There is no way to get a really strong cup of coffee, no matter how much coffee you use. For regular strength, we were using twice as much coffee as with the Braun. Possibly more. Cheaper just to go down to Starbucks.

2. Badly designed carafe. There is a seam someplace that allows water to get in between the inner sleeve and outer portion of the carafe. That means that water sloshes around there. It''s cold when the hot coffee is going in, and so cools down the interior. It''s like pouring your hot coffee into a chilled glass. Other reviewers have said that this trapped water mixes with the coffee. I don''t think it does, but it offends me nonetheless.

3. Cold coffee. Probably because of #2, but also because of the energy-saving design of what is usually a warmer below the carafe not being a warmer. The cooled coffee sits in the carafe and isn''t warmed. Plan on using your microwave for every cup.

4. Messy looking on the counter. Because the carafe has that seam that leaks, it sweats out calcified water. Or something. It looks leprous.

5. Cheaply glued on control panel. Look at the photo. See the control panel at the bottom? Be careful when you clean it because of its leprosy (described in #4), because the entire panel seems to be pasted on. As in temporarily pasted on.

6. The cup-measure on the side is purely for show. There is no way to actually see how much water there is inside, even with a flashlight. It''s no big deal, since I always put in the same amount of water from a big glass that is my coffee-water-measuring glass, but the fact that the numbers are there is misleading. (Actually, if you put your finger on the number outside the coffeemaker, and then crane your head around to look inside, you can see your finger and thus know how much water there is.)

7. No way to use a gold cone.

8. Badly designed column where you pour the water in. It''s awkward to reach, and too close to the grounds, so that I often end up splashing water on the grounds.

9. It did once explode, as other reviewers have complained about. I think I did something wrong but what? and instead of going into the carafe, the weak watery stuff that this machine produces went all over the counter. Eight cups of it.

I felt so relieved when I found the ancient Gevalia 4-cup machine in the basement. Lovely coffee. I''ll never buy a Black & Decker coffeemaker again but I want one of their hedge trimmers.

Summing up, I feel guilty about giving this coffeemaker to Goodwill. No one should even pay $5 for it. It''s going in the trash.

Maybe Black & Decker recently changed the way they manufacture this machine but I have to say I am at a loss over why so many people are complaining. I bought this machine on sale at Target (Amazon turned out to have it for the same price, go figure) and then I found it online to look at reviews. After I read some of the more terrible ones, I was ready to return it without even trying but I figured that, since I already had it in my house, I might as well see how it works. A week later, I''m pleasantly surprised, so much so that I want to address some of the complaints I''ve read:

Coffee Temperature: Yes, this coffee maker either doesn''t have a heat plate or it turns off once the coffee is done brewing (I''m not quite sure). Well, that''s the point leaving coffee over a heat plate for hours makes the coffee taste terrible (it''s the reason I tossed my old coffee maker). The coffee this machine brews is hot it''s so hot that, after pouring a cup immediately after brewing, I have to let it sit for about a minute in order to drink it (after adding milk). And the thermal carafe keeps the coffee hot for at least a couple hours. If I leave coffee in the pot for a whole day, it will still be lukewarm that evening. Although a warming plate might keep the coffee hot all day, it would be undrinkable because burnt coffee is disgusting. This machine will never burn your coffee.

Water Level Gauge: Yes, it''s really hard to tell how much water you''ve put in the water level gauge kinda sucks. So what. This really is a minor inconvenience. And as someone else pointed out, you can use the water gauge by putting your finger on the desired cup line and looking inside the machine. Is this ideal? Of course not (hence the 4 stars) but really not worth crying about.

Mess: This coffee maker has never overflown or otherwise leaked coffee. No idea what you''re doing wrong if you have this happen to you. Same goes for the seam that I''ve read about. No clue what you''re talking about the carafe in my machine is solid.

Difficulty Pouring: It is not difficult to pour from the carafe. You just have to press down on the release button on the lid (this feature helps keep the coffee warm). Although getting the last little bit of coffee out can be somewhat difficult, I don''t mind letting a few drops of coffee go to waste if I''m mostly satisfied with the machine. It''s not like you''re brewing that $500 a pound cat poop coffee (if you are, then you should also get yourself an unnecessarily expensive coffee maker).

Final Thoughts: I like this machine. I like the carafe. I think the carafe is easier to clean than one made of glass. I also think it stains less than a glass carafe and I don''t worry about dropping and breaking it in the sink while washing it (I''ve already dropped it a couple times).

I''m the kind of person who doesn''t have time in the morning to clean my coffee maker before heading out. If I don''t drink all the coffee I brew, it ends up sitting in the carafe all day. When I had a coffee maker with a glass carafe, I''d come home to nasty tasting coffee (because it had sit on the hot plate for a few hours until the machine turned itself off) and a mess trying to clean the burnt coffee out of carafe. I rarely brewed coffee because it was so unpleasant to deal with my old machine. With this machine in my kitchen, I''m brewing coffee almost every day.

We bought this coffee maker about 5 days ago and were immediately and continuously disappointed. The carafe keeps the coffee tepid at best. There is no heating element on the coffee maker. From the moment coffee is made (not very hot) it gets cold. Within 30 minutes it is not drinkable. Additionally, the reservoir fill markers are easy to see but it is very, very difficult to see the water level. Unless you look directly into the coffee maker reservoir or pour the water into the reservoir from some premeasured container, it is almost impossible to determine how much water is in the reservoir.

Just like others have mentioned this coffee maker is horrible. My main complaint is that the underside of the drip does not line up correctly with the coffe pot no matter how much you mess with it. I cleaned up a lake of coffee on my kitchen counter this morning at 6am for the last time, this thing is going in the garbage, absolutely horrible product.

Want Black & Decker CM1509 8-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker Discount?

The coffee goes through the filter and most of it runs out on the counter. I cannot get this thing adjusted so that most of the coffee goes in the carafe most of the time. I will throw this thing away today and go buy another coffee maker. Buy this thing at your own risk.
