Lime-A-Way - Toilet Bowl Cleaner

Lime-A-Way - Toilet Bowl Cleaner - Liquid 24 Ounce.(Pack of 12)I live in an area with hard water. We installed a water softener to combat most of the problem.

I''ve tried CLR in the past without much success.

I ordered this after reading all the glowing reviews here, thinking it was the fact I''d used regular CLR and not this ''professional'' product.

I don''t get it, it just does not work! We bought 12 bottles. I''ve used 4 per 3 toilets over the past week! The white (not sure is lime or calcium) deposits are still there. I ended up scrubbing them off with a pumice stone. The deposits were not that thick.

It may work for rust and either lime or calcium, but it does;t seem to work for all hard water. It did not so much as make a dent in our rings.

I''m uploading pictures of what they toilets look like after 4 bottles over 1 week following the manufacturers instructions to the letter. This is how they looked 1 week ago!

This stuff puts every other toilet bowl cleaner I''ve tried to shame.

I had hard water build up that wouldn''t come off with a wire brush. It took exactly 20 minutes to go from OMG!!! grungy to shiney bright .. I left it on longer than the directions called for, just in case.

The twisted spout makes the bottle easy and safe to use. No muss, no fuss. Put it on. Go watch TV. Come back. Flush. That''s it folks.

It''s just the best. It takes my toilet from disgusting to sparkling in minutes (and most of that time is spent letting it sit and do its magic). I can''t get this anywhere but here, so I''m happy to buy a case of it at a time. I really can''t recommend this stuff enough. It also smells really pleasant, kind of spearminty? Love this stuff as much as a person can love a toilet bowl cleaner.

Best cleaner I have ever used. Unable to find it in local stores. Been trying other cleaners that don''t work as well. Like enough to buy full case for individual use.

I like this product so much that I resorted to buying it from the internet when I wasn''t able to find it around where I live (easily anyway). Great deal 12 for about $30. Way cheaper than buying one at a time.

Watts Premier 501026 Zero Waste Reverse Osmosis Retrofit Kit

Watts Premier 501026 Zero Waste Reverse Osmosis Retrofit Kit
  • Turn your existing RO in to a 100 percent efficient treatment system
  • Increase the production of your current RO to fill the tank faster
  • Conserves water
  • Certified to ensure high quality

I live in Japan.So I bought this with RO-PURE STAGE4(RO-4) for Fukushima''s accident.

At first It didn''t contain diagram for RO-4,only for old RO system.I must requested correct diagram by e-mail and had to wait 10 days for answer.

Next,I installed zero-waste but it decrease TDS about 40-60%.supplied water''s TDS was 77-125PPM and pure?water''s TDS was 30-55PPM(led alarm on RO faucet keep blue flashing(means OK),so,I know that We can''t know the membrane efficiency from led alarm).

WATTS''s mail said "Everything appears connected properly." and couldn''t identify the reason.

I requested advise for Japanese RO professional,he said zero-waste is wired system for riskiness''about drain error.Back pressure from hot water supply may brake water prresure balance at membrane. So I gave up zero waste and make drain as free running, then TDS decrease to 4PPM soon.

Finally,zero-waste work only as booster pump.and I doubt WATTS''s assessment for this system. They checked TDS?

Anyway You''d get booster pump instead of zero-waste.If You insist zero-waste,get TDS meter and check carefully for your health.

Once the system is installed it works well. The diagram that comes with the system does not apply to all Watts RO systems. Additional diagrams were not available online from Watts. I emailed their service department, told them what RO system I had, and they responded that the zero waste system I bought would not work with my Watts RO system.

Thankfully a phone call to the technical department resulted in a new diagram with some modifications and we were able to complete installation. The transformer that came with the system was faulty. But, with the proof of the purchase of a new transformer from Radio Shack, Amazon credited our account for $30 which was fair.

I have been using Premier RO systems for 12 years. Some work better than others. One of the systems I purchased was the Watts Zero Waste RO system. I purchased it when I discovered how much water my 5 stage RO system used. This system was a poor value as it was only three stage and the pump died after a year or so. Recently, my septic filled up due to marshy conditions caused by snow melt. So we disconnected our five stage system and had it drain into five gallon buckets. We were alarmed and amazed how much waste water it yielded. So we decided to try again with the zero waste, this time buying a retrofit for our dozen year old five stage system. The retrofit seems to be better quality than our original zero waste. Installation is a bit complex, but not hard. Water quality does not seem different after installation. The pump goes off when the tank fills. Overall, I am satisfied by this product. Hopefully it will last longer than the first one.

Not supposed to be working with WP4-V but I hooked it up anyway and it works! So I am giving it 5 stars since otherwise I was going to trash that WP4-V unit.

Bialetti Venus Stainless Steel Espresso Maker Save 3% Off

Bialetti Venus 4-Cup Stovetop PercolatorWith this sleek little pot, you can make espresso on the stovetop like they do in Italy. The Venus Bialetti is easy to use-if you use a countertop drip maker, you can handle this. It takes only 3 minutes on my stove to make 4 shots.

I have been using this daily for a little over a year, usually one pot for myself and one for my husband and the gasket is still doing well.

It does not make the same quality as an industrial espresso maker but it certainly out performs the various countertop models I''ve tried. I would even go out on a limb and say that a countertop model that outperforms this would be in a price range of roughly 10 times this cost. Those take up a lot more real estate in small kitchen too.

The Bialetti Venus is also adorable. Not that I want to marry my espresso pot or anything. . .

I think you have to be willing to risk some hassle factor, as mine arrived damaged (cracked handle). Amazon was great about the return, sending a replacement immediately. Makes good espresso, but there is definitely a learning curve.

A few tips:

It''s hard to be sure, but from looking at the interior pieces, they may not be stainless steel like the exterior. The instructions are similar to the aluminum model, to make a first pot of coffee and throw it away and to only rinse for cleaning. This is to coat the interior with coffee oils to prevent a metallic taste. If you do wash it, you''ll need to throw out your first pot of espresso again, because it won''t taste good at all.

It''s important not to pack the espresso grinds so the steam will move properly into the upper chamber. When I packed the grounds, at least half of the water remained in the lower chamber and quite a lot escaped through the release valve and gasket seal.

The grind size is also very importantif it''s too fine, steam shoots out the sides.

There should be a little water left in the chamber after brewing, maybe a tablespoon or so. This is to prevent scorching and discoloration. This means the 4-cup unit makes about 7 oz of espresso, not 8oz. For us, this is enough for two small-ish cappucinos.

It''s also important to use relatively high heat, and to remove the maker from the heat as soon as most of the espresso has moved into the upper chamber (this takes a little practice to figure out, but the upper chamber looks about 2/3 full at this point and it is at about the time the unit starts gurlging). The espresso is more bitter if there is prolonged contact with the grinds.

I do like Illy brand espresso, and you can froth hot milk with a whisk if you look up the Cooks Illustrated directions. It''s basically putting the whisk between hands that are in the same posisiton they''d be in if you had just clapped them, then slide them back and forth in opposite directions (like you would if they were cold).

Buy Bialetti Venus Stainless Steel Espresso Maker Now

I''ve been using my 4-cup Bialetti for nearly a half year now. Unlike other reviewers, I''ve not had any problem with the gasket. (I don''t remove it for each cleaning since the gasket is the weak spot.) My girlfriend has the six-cup model and this smaller Bialetti is perfect for about two cafe-lattes. I enjoy the ritual of making espresso on stovetop on those morning I''m not compelled to rush drip grind through my standard machines. I love coffee. :-)

This little unit is also simply a gorgeous work of art. The stainless steel construction is solid, and the components such as the filters are suitable for reasonably heavy use. The Bialetti makes better espresso than my Mr. Coffee four-cup machine.

I was concerned by some of the negative feedback about this item and in fact hesitated to buy it because of some of the reviews about its workmanship and quality, but there is no cause for concern. The craftsmanship of the Bialetti Venus 4-Cup Percolator is in fact superior to all the other Bialetti stovetop percolators I have. I currently own three aluminum models and have owned a total of seven. This one is the best of the lot.

I much prefer this to any of the aluminum models. The coffee it makes tastes better, the pot is easier to clean, and the craftsmanship is superior.

Don''t hesitate to buy it. It''s top notch quality.

Want Bialetti Venus Stainless Steel Espresso Maker Discount?

I have a Bialetti 2-cup stovetop espresso maker that I bought while we were in Italy 5 years ago and we use it all the time and love it. I soon after bought a 4-cup maker here in the States that is also Bialetti and is made well and works well. I have just received the Bialetti that I ordered to give my daughter as a gift and it is made in China and not of the same quality. The coffee basket is cheap, and the water belly is coated on the inside with some brushed-silver finish. It makes me think there may be something internally that I can''t see that is cheaply made as well. I am sending it back and buying a Veg Vigano instead simply because they are still made in Italy and completely made of stainless steel. I don''t know what Bialetti is thinking having their products made in China and India and allowing the quality to slide downhill. The customers who buy these products are looking for quality stainless steel products made in Italy that will last forever and actually get better with age. What a disappointment...

I guess the fact that I returned it, is an indication of what I thought. It wasn''t just that it was defective ( the spout on the plastic water bottle leaked/dripped). This cost over $400 and they provide a cheap plastic water bottle. I don''t really know how the distiller itself worked because the one time I ran it all the distilled water leaked out of the plastic bottle all over the counter and floor.

I think the 9000 is the best for home use and if you go to the waterwise.com website you can learn more about the debate about distilled water and decide for yourself. I think that you get what you pay for and that if you want years of service this is the system to choose.

Frigidaire FAD504DUD 50-Pint Dehumidifier Save 12% Off

Frigidaire FAD504DUD 50-Pint Dehumidifier
  • 50 pints/day dehumidification
  • Continuous operation is possible when unit is located near a suitable drain
  • Electronic controls
  • 2 fan speeds
  • Low temperature operation

I received this unit free of charge because my old unit failed AND because I registered that purchase online at the Frigidaire website.

I originally purchased the Frigidaire 50-pint humidifier (Model FDF50S1) in June of 2009 [i.e. the 2009 version of this product] through Amazon.com. The unit worked perfectly for two years then stopped dehumidifying. The unit would power on, one could change the fan speed, but the unit would not dehumidify even though the unit was set to Continuous (CO) and a hyrgrometer showed the basement room to be at 49% humidity.

After contacting a local Frigidaire authorized repairer, I learned these units are considered "throwaway" meaning there are no serviceable parts (except the filter). The units are less expensive to replace than repair, so the manufacturer does not sell any replacement parts (except the filter). My 2009 system had a one year full warranty (long past) and a Years 2-5 "Sealed System" warranty (the sealed refrigeration system).

I called Frigidaire (eventually directed to Electrolux Home Appliances, the actual manufacturers of Frigidaire dehumidifiers), and was expecting to have to pay some cost to get my unit replaced. The rep told me that since the dehumidifier system failed (within the five year warranty) the unit would be replaced with a new 50-pint unit FREE OF CHARGE. Frigidaire arranged for me to pick up a new unit (this unit) at Lowe''s at no cost to me.

Since my unit was REGISTERED ONLINE AT FRIGIDAIRE.COM at the time of purchase, I did not have to submit any receipts nor send the old unit back.

Therefore, I have two summary points:

1. These dehumidifiers only last a few years

2. Make sure you register your Frigidaire dehumidifier purchase on-line after you buy. It will make the replacement process alot easier.

I use this in my finished basement, and it does an excellent job of keeping it dry. I used it when it was 98 and humid and it did its job. I had to empty it out about two times a day. When the temperature dropped to the 70s and humidity dropped, I emptied it out about once a day. I can be away from my house a couple days at a time, so I hooked up a hose. Initially, it did not drain out of the hose, but instead continued to drain into the bucket. I took off the rear two wheels so it tips back a bit, now it drains through the hose.

If you are considering purchasing this, I would look elsewhere to a product that was designed correctly instead of needing to make an adjustment. If you already purchased this, want to use continuous draining, but do not want to return it, either put some cardboard at the front of the dehumdifier, or take off the rear wheels so it will drain from the hose instead of into the bucket. Hopefully there are no other design errors with this product, since it keeps my basement dry.

FIRST REVIEW (2 stars):

1) The dehumidifier function seems to be quite effective. Our basement was really dank. After a few days, the difference is quite improved.

2) The machine does NOT drain into a hose. I tried all of the suggestions seen in other reviews without success. I was really hoping that I could drain directly into the sump pit, but that is not to be. The water does collect in the tank, so a trip to the basement is required every two days. Not the end of the world, but not as advertised either.

UPDATE Frigidaire is sending me a modification to the dehumidifier. Per their email of today, "We are pleased to announce we now feature a kit that once installed should totally eliminate the drainage issue. We are mailing the kit along with installation instructions direct to your residence. Please allow 7-10 business days."

So, if you are having the drainage problem, you need to contact Frigidaire via their web site and request the kit.

I will let you know if it works...

UPDATE # 2 Frigidaire got the parts to me in 3 days. There is a plug for the drain which leads into the tank, diverting the water. The other part is an adaptation for the threaded drain on the back. Installation of both required less than one minute.

Viola! Water is now coming out of the hose!

Although one must wonder why they don''t include the modification kit with the original product package, I''m quite impressed with Frigidaire service.

I''ve got a Whirlpool dehumidifier that has run ALMOST continuously in my basement for 6 years and a Kenmore dehumidifier that has run pretty much continuously in my garage for 8 years. Throw a little bleach in the water bucket every now and then ... that''s all one has to do with these two appliances.

I bought THIS Frigidaire dehumidifier for my bathroom just SIX WEEKS AGO! The electronic control panel has been "sketchy" a couple of times since then but tonight it quit working completely. I should have known better (but, alas, I thought lightning did not strike twice in the same place) because I bought ANOTHER Frigidaire dehumidifier (which I''ve also reviewed on AMAZON) just a little over a year ago and its electronic control panel ceased to work just a few days after the one year "warranty" expired.

So, I will never buy another Frigidaire or Electrolux (who now owns Frigidaire) product again for as long as I live. Govern yourselves accordingly with regard to these poorly engineered products.

I purchased this filter to use only for filling my hot tub. The temp dropped below freezing and the bottom housing shattered like someone dropped a grenade in it even though it was empty at the time! My fault. The precautions specifically state to it must be protected against freezing. I went to manufactures site to order a replacement housing but after shipping costs, I discovered I could order the whole unit from Amazon for $3 more. I also noted that the manufacturer recommends replacing the bottom housing every 5 years for the clear housing and very ten years for the opaque housing.

5 stars for a water filter?

Well my current one conked out, and this is the replacement one that fits my existing filters. Best price I could find, no tax, no shipping. Sometimes Amazon really amazes me with the amount of stuff you can find here.

We had our contractor install the HF360 today. He has installed many whole house filters in the past but ran into trouble with this one. Basically, when water was sent through the filter, it leaked out the very top. (Not where the clear housing meets the blue top part an issue with the gasket but the blue, built-in shut-off valve.) We called the 800 number listed on the box and they were no help what-so-ever. We went to Culligan.com and found this number 1-877-386-0823. The person on the other end was able to help us right away almost anticipating what the problem was. The top part had to be disassembled and the interior parts needed to be tightened as they were not tightened as tight as they could have been in the factory. We did as instructed and now it works without leaks.

Before your own installation, I would recommend that the entire top blue part be checked by the installer before installation tightening as needed. And don''t forget that you will need to pick up your own filters (we chose the P5-D Level 4) and fittings for either end of the unit. Our contractor was able to build a custom bracket to keep the whole unit supported as well.

So far, no leaks and the filter is already turning pink from all the rust in our water supply. I will try to update this review regarding how easy (or not) changing the filter is. Fingers crossed. So, four stars and not five for the issue with having to tighten the interior bits on our own.

This filter seems to work OK. Its fairly new yet.

Install was simple enough.

But when I turned the water on it had a slow leak around the handle at the top (not between the clear body and the blue top)... since I had it hard plumbed into my system I didn''t want to take it off. I turned the water off and did some investigating and under the handle there are 4 screws. I took those out and there is an O-ring around the handle interior. I put a bunch of plumbing silicone grease on the o-ring, reassembled it, and the leak was FIXED.

So be advised... If you get a leak coming under the handle you can fix it. Just be sure to turn the water off first!

I downgraded the product to 3 stars since I had to fix it. Now it seems to work OK.

Air-O-Swiss AOS 7144 Ultrasonic Humidifier Save 13% Off

Air-O-Swiss AOS 7144 Ultrasonic HumidifierMy family and I moved from Southern California (where we slept with the windows open nearly year round for wonderful, well rested sleep) to Phoenix, Arizona (where the humidity hovers at most to 15% in my house according to my hygrometer.) After a month (and before we got the humidifier), my kids (3 and 1) were absolutely suffering. During the night, they were choking and hacking, wheezing and just plugged up. I was no different. Needless to say, our sleep was badly affected. I knew it was the air situation. After 3 nights of researching the different types of humidifiers, I finally settled on buying two Air O Swiss 7144 units (one for each kid''s room). Although it was expensive, I buy things for the long haul and figured better to spend up front then have problems with cheaper models down the road. I have since turned it on absolutely every single night for them and the difference is short of miraculous. Here are some points:

1a full tank lasts two nights running at 8 hours a night with the windows closed and the door nearly shut (about an inch ajar at most)

2tank is not difficult to fill. I use one 3 gallon water bottle

(normally used for my drinking water dispense) to completely fill up both humidifier units

3to maximize space and thus get the most water into the humidifier, I removed the demineralization cartridge and use only reverse osmosis drinking water for my unit. I have had ZERO WHITE DUST. The R.O. water is purified enough that there are no remaining minerals to be churned out as white dust. This trick also saves me from having to replace the cartridge. (BTW, our tap water is VERY hard so I didn''t want to use it even with the demineralization cartridge because why make the machine work harder than it has to?) R.O. water is perfect and again, NO WHITE DUST AT ALL!!!!

4It''s so quiet, it''s ridiculous. I LOVE that.

5The warm mist feature is perfect. It does not raise the temperature of the room so it''s never like a sauna. The air leaving the machine even at warm mist feels somewhat cool (and the first night I kept checking in on the kids to make sure I wasn''t freezing them) but the unit actually heats the water to 104 degrees which is just the right temp at maintaining room temp (no moist saunas!!) and/or preventing steam burn to your finger in case a curious little one chooses to wave his/her hand in the mist.

6I''ve religiously used the units each night for the last 3 months with absolutely no problem.

7The buttons don''t light up or create distracting glows. Important for me because I wanted the kids'' rooms to remain relatively dark as that''s what they''re used to.

8There is no leaking or condensation on the unit. The mist is so fine that it evaporates before it touches the little folding dinner tray table that I have each unit placed on. The carpet underneath doesn''t feel soggy or anything. It truly produces an ultrafine mist that dissipates almost immediately.

9I can adjust the flow and humidity to my liking (to get 2 nights'' worth of output from one tank, I set it on warm mist at the lowest air flow at 55% humidity)

10It automatically shuts off when it runs out of water. There is a blinking light that indicates that the machine is on "On" but there''s no water. I usually press the off button the after the second night''s use. If I forget to press off and fill the tank up on the third night, I noticed that since the machine is technically "on" (even though there''s no sound or movement indicating that), as soon as I put the filled tank back on the unit, it immediately starts working on the settings I last set it on.

11I have yet to use the cool mist (since it''s still winter) but I read that it actually helps to maintain (at the very least) or slightly lower the room temp which is convenient in summer months.

All in all, I love this machine. By the way, on a few occasions when my older child needed me to sleep next to him until he fell back asleep (usually a nightmare woke him up), I noticed within 10-15 minutes that my breathing was VERY different in his room where the unit had been running for several hours into the night. No clogged sinuses or difficult inhalation. Once he was appropriately tucked in and I would go back to my room, within 5-10 minutes, my breathing would get adversely affected. That''s how dry the air is in our house. So, that''s why after 3 months of enjoying how well it''s worked in the kids'' rooms, my husband and I are looking forward to our own good sleep after just purchasing our 3rd machine.

I searched long and hard to find a humidifier that would meet my needs. Unfortunately, I couldn''t find one, so this is what I ended up with. Kind of harsh to start out with, I know, but I''m just being honest. I wanted a humidifer, first and foremost that was quiet, so I started looking at Ultrasonic Humidifiers. Ultrasonic humidifers are notorious for emitting a white dust as they work which is actually dissolved minerals in the water. I did not see this as an issue as I will be using RO (Reverse Osmosis) water to fill it. Next, a Humidistat. Suprisingly few humidifers actually come with humidistats, even among the higher priced units. A unit with a humidistat will control the the humidity level of a room by constantly measuring the humidity and turning the unit on or off based upon the preset user selectable setting, much like a thermostat does for heating and cooling. Many units simply have Low Medium and High settings, or some variation thereof which makes it difficlult to control the humidity level with any precision.

I chose the 7144 for a few reasons, the Primary of which were the features talked about above combined with the minimal footprint and elegant modern look. The unit is fairly quiet, although even when not working the fan runs. A fan is used to propel the mist into the room making for a more efficient introduction of moisture to the environment, however when the unit is at rest and not calling for humidity, I see no reason this fan needs to be running. This is both a waste issue as it is using energy and a noise issue as, although the unit is fairly quiet, the fan can still be heard when it is running.

The Water tank is undersized for the the unit. This humidifer is capable of outputting a generous amount of moisture, however if left to run at maximum output at constant interval the tank will need to be refilled about every 8 hours. The tank is also awkward to handle and difficult to refill. While the tank conforms nicely to the asthetics of the unit, once removed, it has an odd shape to it which makes it difficult to refill. One can''t simply place it under the sink and leave it to fill, it requires some kind of shim, or assistance to keep it from tilting over, or even to keep the opening close enough to the edge of the sink in order to reach the faucet. I have overcome this issue by refilling it in the Kitchen sink and using a funnel to reach the faucet.

The last issue I have with the water tank is that it is a bit messy to remove. It is impossible to remove this tank without dripping water all over the floor. When installed in the unit, the base of the tank actually sits in a pool of water making it wet. Once removed, the wet tank drips everywhere unless it is wiped down immediatly, or some such.

I''ve given the unit 3 stars for its'' elegant look, attractive fine mist, humidistat, and quiet operation, and dropped the 2 stars for its wasteful fan and numerous water tank issues.

Buy Air-O-Swiss AOS 7144 Ultrasonic Humidifier Now

This unit is much better than the evaporative type. I owned an evaporator for 2 years but it had problems with mold in the wicks and filter. Air-O-Swiss uses ionization, not evaporization, to put mist in your air. Ionization is faster and more efficient. It doesn''t require a fan to do it''s work, as all evaporitive types do, so it is quiet. For compairison, see the Essick Air 336-500 3-Speed Tabletop Evaporative Humidifier, this is an evaporitive type that I owned before buying the Air-O-Swiss.

The Air-O-Swiss is easier to clean, more efficient and it looks pretty cool too! It seems that most air cleaner/humidifier makers don''t care much about how the product looks in a room, but this one is sleek and subtle, blending well with my modern taste (I hate taupe/beige appliances, but that''s me). Whatever it looks like, it needs to be effective, as this unit is. The higher price seems justified by the very useful controls (which are completely absent in cheaper models), the superior design and efficiency.

The unit has many settings and digital controls that allow timed use, heated or cool mist, and humidity control. It flashes a symbol to let me know when to fill more water. No need to keep logbooks about cleaning, a different flashing signal tells me whenever I need to do the simple descaling. It''s easy to loose track of cleanings without this feature (who has time to keep notes on such a thing?).

All humidifiers need some cleaning and filter replacement. The Air-O-Swiss replacement filters (for cleaning the water, replace about 4 times a year), the silver stick (needs replacement rarely, maybe once a year or less) and descaling packets for cleaning the tank (cheap and must be used once every week or two). The costs for all of these are reasonable, perhaps somewhat lower that the costs of the extra things needed for other units I have owned/checked out.

Do not neglect the replacement/cleaning processes. This unit, or any other brand, will begin to fail quickly if you do not keep up the maintenance. This is true with any humidifier, but the Air-O-Swiss manages to make these steps easy and relatively hassle-free.

I would never go back to the evaporative type, the filters for them are much more expensive, they seem to mold no matter how carefully maintained (a big problem for sensitive people) and they use more electricity than the Air-O-Swiss. The Air-O-Swiss costs more to start, but consider having to buy the other, cheaper type, 2 years worth of replacement wicks, filters and descalers, then scrapping it all to buy this one anyway. This one is a pleasure to use and own. My advice is to consider my experience and buy the more expensive, but much better, Air-O-Swiss.

This is my 2nd purchase of this same unit...we needed another one for the living room. I have not had a single issue with either of them. One has been running for ~8 straight months with no need for cleaning (because there''s nothing to clean off it). My newest one is only 2 weeks old. They both work flawlessly.

You need to realize that this humidifier is ultrasonic, which has many advantages over "swamp cooler" style humidifiers, but they have a few things to keep in mind. If you didn''t know, an ultrasonic humidifier uses a piezoelectric transducer element that vibrates at ultrasonic speeds. This causes water molecules to break off from the rest of the pool and it becomes vapor. In doing so, it also rips the mineral deposits apart from the water. This is that "white dust" you hear about. It''s bad. It will accumulate pretty much everywhere in, on, and around the humidifier...including the ultrasonic element. Minerals are abrasive...and they *could* essentially "sand" away the finish on the element over time. That''s bad, but it''s not the manufacturer''s fault by any means...it''s *your* fault for using hard water.

Now, with that elementary stuff out of the way, RO water good enough for daily use with the demineralization cartridge. The "white dust" may be non-existent to your eyes, but there are still trace minerals in RO water and the cartridge in the tank can''t remove everything, so they''ll build up over time. That''s why you have to clean it every few months. I removed the cartridge and use a mix of distilled water (from the store) and free de-ionized water from my work. I get the best performance this way. If I ever get my reverse osmosis system fixed, I might us a mix of RO water and DI water to save some $$$.

So how about some features to consider:

1. Mist control There are 3 levels: "barely any", "a good amount", and "old faithful." I keep both units set at 50% humidity and on the highest vapor setting. This is able to keep my living room and master bedroom at an optimal humidity. The tank will last 1.5 to 2 days depending on usage and relative humidity.

2. Near silent When it''s on, the little fan (that you don''t have access to) is always on. It''s only there to help the vapor get up and out of the unit. It''s about the same volume as a single low-speed computer fan. You can only hear it if it''s dead silent in the room. When the unit is producing vapor, you can hear the hum of the ultrasonic element doing its thing, and there''s the occasional "blurp" sound of air bubbles in the tank. Total noise level is less than 25% of a typical house fan on the "low" setting. In fact, when my fan is on, you cannot hear the unit at all.

3. Pre-Heating It has a pre-heat function that *warms* the vapor. By the time the vapor leaves the unit, it''s slightly above body temperature. It adds the same energy usage as a light bulb, so don''t be scared off by it...it''s by no means a steam humidifier. If you put your hand 3" away from the nozzle, the vapor will be cool already. Speaking of nozzles...

4. Dual adjustable output nozzles Great for putting the vapor where you want it. If you line up the thumb tabs, the nozzle comes out for cleaning...snazzy.

5. Buttons/Display The buttons have a nice feel to them, and the display is big and bright...it''s slightly brighter than my alarm clock''s display. If it''s too bright for you, leave the protective film on the display and color it in with a sharpie marker. You''ll still be able to see the display...just a little darker.

Now for the drawbacks...

1. No rubber feet. I like things to stay where I put them. Because it has plastic feet it will move if you bump it.

2. It does drip a bit when you remove the tank. Now understand me: this is impossible to avoid. Warm vapor + cool water tank = condensation in the vapor tube. Also, the bottom of the case comes in contact with the water that''s about to be pre-heated/vaporized. Pick the tank up, let it drip for 2 seconds, tip it at a slight angle, let it drip for another 2 seconds...no spilled water. Or you can be quick and flip the tank upside down in one swift motion like I do. The tank itself does not leak.

3. The only way to fill it is to flip the tank over and unscrew the cap. I''ve thought about drilling/tapping a 1" hole in the top that''s big enough for a funnel...but I''ve never got around to it. Having to flip the tank over to fill it isn''t worth the effort/time.

So that''s it. The 3 "cons" are so minor they don''t even matter, but I thought I''d still bring them up.

I have been using this humidifier for about a month. I live in the mountains of Idaho and our only heat is from our woodstove. Burning wood dries the air out horribly. We have always had trouble with our sinus'' in the winter because of the dry heat.

This humidifier brought our humidity level up from 34% to 50% in a little over two hours. Even though it is only meant to work in a single room we have noticed a higher humidity in our breakfast room (two rooms away) while this little machine is running.

We are looking forward to a much more comfortable winter this year.

Essick Air EP9500 Whole House Humidifier Save 8% Off

Essick Air EP9500 Whole House Humidifier With Refill IndicationIt is plastic, but it looks good, and is much better looking than competitive models. It is also very quiet on the 1 setting, and puts out a lot of moisture and the 9 setting, and can be set anywhere in between.

the major drawback is that there is no way to tell how much water is in the reservoir. The unit holds 3.5 gallons, so when it is empty, I add 3 gallons. I have to wait until it is empty to fill it (which can happen anytime) when I am not around, there is no easy way to top it off in the evening.

I purchased this humidifier for a library, which is primarily dark woods and the white 821-000 model which is a very good unit stood out like a sore thumb. Fortunately, both units take the #1043 replacement wick. The pictures I saw of the product depict a rather rich looking appearance, but in the flesh its not so impressive. The fill level is somewhat confusing. Its a 1" plate saying max fill. Fill to the bottom/middle/top of the plate? Nothing in the manual on the subject. Filling it is a pain with a little door that makes pouring in water a precision operation to avoid spills. In addition, I needed a flashlight to see the water level to prevent overfilling. I have 2 of the 821-000 models and they are much easier to use. They should make a dark colored version of it where white is not a good option. I have also found that filling the units with filtered water greatly extends filter life and efficiency. Otherwise, if the water used has a high mineral content it will turn the filter into a cinder block in short order.

Reading the reviews of this product, I was hesitant to purchase it, but comparing the other humidifiers on this site, I couldn''t find one that was any better. That being said, I was afraid to buy it on line in case it needed to be returned so I purchased it locally. A couple of comments regarding it performance:

Noise: Sounds like a pedestal fan, or box fan, really not that big of a deal for us. After a couple hours you forget that its actualy there. There are about 10 fan levels, you realy don''t need that many, but it is nice to turn it down, if your listening to a movie, and then pump it up when you need the extra moisture.

Filling the tank: The one feature I really like is that you just pop open a small door, and using a pitcher, fill it up, it holds 3 gallons. With our wood stove running non stop, and the humidifier set on medium to high fan level, we go through about 3 gallons every 24 hours, and it keeps the main living floor at 45 to 50 percent humidity.

The unit keeps our 1700 sqft, 2 story house comfortable, we keep it by the stairs, so that the natural draft distributes the mositur evenly.

One complaint, I wish it had a water level window, you don''t know its full untill water is running on the floor, so we just put a gallon in it in the morning, and one at night, or just wait till it runs out completly.

The remote control is usefull, but not nessecary. It is nice to see the humidity is on the other side of the room, not just right at the machine.

The tile top is extremely fragile, be carefull.

The plastic consol is just that plastic, not bad, but not great, though since it is a pedestal, it is not very obtrusive.

We;ve been running it for 2 months now on well water and np problems, the wick still works and it does a good job. The concept is simple, a fan blowing across a large wick, like an auto air filter. Its not flashy, but it does it job.

This unit looks nice and that is where the value ends. The door in the front pulls down for you to fill the unit, unfortunetly there is no gauge as to how much water is needed. Fill it to high and the unit overflows, and stops working. The only way to determine how much water is needed is to take teh full lid off. In addittion witht he way the fill door is set, there is a high probablility the water will spill out as you lift the fill container (one you use) higher. Looks nice and that is it.

Now the unit I do recomend for one from the same company that is easy to fill and runs for a long time is the Essick Air 4D7 300 Whole-House Console-Style Evaporative Humidifier. I purchased both of them and this one is much easier to work with. It has two large fill tanks that last a long time (depending on how dry your place is) comes with a hose that mkaes it easy till fill, water is in sealed container as you move it from fill source to unit. Bigger and not as nice looking at the EP9500 but a better choice.

This humidifier is a good size if you''re looking for a whole house humidifier with a small footprint. It appears to have a woodgrain look in the photos, but it doesn''t. It''s just brown plastic...really cheap looking brown plastic. Having said that, it is slightly more attractive than the gray plastic humidifiers and does blend in a little better than one of those. The granite tile for the top is an actual (relatively thick) granite tile, which was surprising to me. Honestly, I think it makes the plastic look even cheaper by comparison though. I do give them props for putting it on rolling casters. It''s really easy to shove into a closet if you''re having company and don''t want to look at an ugly appliance.

I''ve only had this for about a week now, but it seems to do the job fairly well. The air doesn''t seem quite as chilly since I''ve been humidifying it; which is why I wanted a large humidifier. You can set the desired humidity and the system will turn itself on and off to maintain that. You can also adjust the fan speed at 9 levels. It is fairly loud even at the lowest speed, but not overly distracting.

EDIT 1-21-2012: The humidity sensor on this thing is useless. Sometimes it will come on for about 10 seconds, then shut off and do that continually. It loses a star for that as this feature doesn''t seem to work correctly. I just turn it all the way up when I want to humidify and off when I don''t.

Others have commented on the fill door being useless and I have to agree. You can use it, but unless you take the top piece off, there is absolutely no way of knowing how full the tank is. I find it easier to just open it up to fill it rather than guess and risk an overflow. The top piece pulls right off, so this isn''t much of a hardship.

I keep my reviews up to date and will share additional comments, good or bad, if my experience with this appliance changes.

DeLonghi ECO310BK 15-Bar-Pump Espresso Machine Save 29% Off

DeLonghi ECO310BK 15-Bar-Pump Espresso Machine, Piano BlackWe were worried about purchasing this product after reading the previous review about the lukewarm results. However, we had read so many other reviews of similar machines that we thought it could easily have been user error. When we bought the machine, we actually read the manual very carefully before doing anything. (Not our typical style :) We followed the instructions. We did more than the minimum 5 recommended times of running the machine using water only; it needed about 10 times of this to get really hot -but only on the first time out of the box. The espresso itself can be pretty good, but probably only for a casual espresso drinker. Even for casual sippers such as ourselves, it is easy to pull a shot that is completely undrinkable. (Actually, my husband is less discerning, so we feed him the "bad" shots.) I know what a beautiful espresso tastes like since I work next to a famous Illy shop in DC, and this espresso is, sadly, not the same. But, it is still very wonderful and enjoyable. Very drinkable, if you take care. Overall, I am very happy with this purchase.

I would like to give another tip, which is that the first 10 or so times that you use the machine, the filter attachment (the thing with the handle) is extremely hard to get to its fully attached position. Fully attached is perpendicular to the machine; this is not indicated anywhere in the manual. So if your machine is LOUD, you may not have this fully attached. It gets easier after a few uses. The machine is not very loud when you use it properly.

Cheers!

I fell in love with this machine--both its looks and its espresso quality--after being introduced to it by a DeLonghi employee in a department store. He pulled a great shot for me in the store: dark, rich taste, very hot, with a lot of crema, and for the past week I''ve had similarly great results at home. I was leery buying this machine after reading the Amazon reviews, but I took a risk and I couldn''t be happier.

Lukewarm shots seem to be a common complaint for machines like this. They happen for a variety of reasons, but this 15-bar pump definitely produces all the heat you need. Problems occur, rather, when the filter (the scoop-like handle) and your espresso cups aren''t hot enough. First, run the machine with just water at least once before you make a shot, every time. I also run the filter and my cup(s) under hot water just before using, and as a result my coffee both tastes rich and is very hot. You also, without a doubt, need coffee that''s been ground with an excellent conical burr grinder to get a fine and consistent grind, which is crucial for the way machines like this work. Most grinders that do a great espresso grind unfortunately cost as much as this machine, but as a substitute you can certainly get it ground professionally at your local coffee shop, and use that coffee for a few days. Not as fresh, but the grind is more crucial. Keep in mind these two things (good grind + warm cups & filter) and you will produce fantastic shots with this machine. And its style definitely classes up your kitchen!

I had the same leaking problem with the DeLonghi 270 that so many others seemed to have. I had it fixed, but decided to give up when the frothing nozzle melted onto the unit and could not be removed for cleaning (right after the one year warranty expired). The DeLonghi ECO 310 seems to be a much better design. It has a larger water tank, easy to remove frothing cover and nozzle, makes a large cup of espresso fairly quickly, and doesn''t look chintzy. Hopefully, it''s built for the long term. The only drawback I found was that there is only 3.5 inches between the cup tray and the filter holder, so most large mugs don''t fit. That seems to be common with these machines, however. Also, I would like to mention that the measurements in the product description are slightly off. It is 10 3/4 inches deep x 9 3/4 inches wide x 12 3/4 inches high (to the top of the steam knob).

Purchased to fit the look and size of my small European kitchen, I use it with the little Deca Premium pads easily available here in Belgium for a reasonable price. Haven''t yet tried tamping my own cup with ready-made, or grinding & using my own beans, but when I do, it''ll be Illy or Lavazza, or Douwe Eggberts coffee, that I try. The coffee itself, and fineness of the grind, is 9/10ths of the equation when it comes to filter coffee or espresso, in my opinion.

Haven''t had a bad cup yet using the Deca pads, and the temp has been just fine, every time, so no reason to go crazy trying everything under the sun. Around the corner, there are 8 caffes I can use for that, anyway! What I wanted was a way to get my caffiene fix, quick, here at home, without needing a degree in avionics or engineering to learn the ins and outs of the machine.

It was simple to use using the "quick card" pictures included to set up and get going, and in a few minutes--voila! Hot, delicious espresso.

The machine is brand new to me, so maybe over time I''ll come to find some things I don''t like about it. For now, it''s exactly what we wanted at a price we didn''t mind paying.

I have to say that I love that I got this espresso machine. It has been a lot of fun making tasty espresso at home. This is my first espresso machine and before this I had never pulled a shot of espresso before. After only half an hour of explanation I learned how to easily pull a very tasty shot from this machine. There is a lot of good stuff about this machine, but also a few things I wish were improved upon.

The best thing about this machine is that it is easy to pull a delicious shot of espresso with this machine, if you do it right you won''t fail. I like that the machine looks really good on my countertop. It has a larger water reservoir and a nice cup warming tray, although the warming tray won''t heat up your cups but will keep them warm if you have already heated them up with hot water. Its really great that I can use either a prepacked coffee packet or tamp my own grounds for the espresso. The two spouts pour very evenly and it produces a lot of great creama.

There are a few things I wish were improved upon. One of which is the button interface, its nonintuitive if you are using it for the first time. I will go into detail later on how to properly use this machine. Another big annoyance is that frother wand only swivels side to side and doesn''t rotate front to back like most machines have. The whole thing is made of plastic which gives it a slightly cheaper feel and makes it less sturdy when you are knocking the thing around. Another big annoyance is that the size of tamper you need is a really uncommon size, 52cm, and the tamper provided that is attached to the machine is awkward to use and you never really get a good tamp with it.

Here is how I have learned to make a cappuccino with this machine. If you have any other tips or recommendations, please comment below as I am still learning too.

1) Fill the water reservoir at least a quarter of the way full with water.

2) Turn on the machine by pressing the top button. The top red light should turn on. Press the bottom button to heat the water for steaming (disregard if you are not going to steam any milk). The bottom red light should turn on.

3) Grind your beans using a burr grinder on the espresso setting

4) Put a filter basket into the handle filter holder and fill the filter with one or two scoops of ground coffee using the provided scoop. (1 scoop if using the one cup filter, 2 scoops if using the two cup filter)

5) Using the handle of the scoop, level off the coffee grounds with the top of the filter. You can push the excess grounds off the filter

6) Tamp down your grounds with ~20 lbs of force. You will get a feel for how hard you need to tamp it after you see a few results

7) Turn the filter holder over and lightly shake out any loose coffee grounds. Make sure to hold the filter lock up so that the filter doesn''t fall out

8) Put your filter holder back in your machine

9) Fill a cup or frothing pitcher with however much milk you want. I pour in about half a cup of milk.

10) Once the middle green light turns on, you are good to go. Open the steam, using the knob on the top of the machine, for just a few seconds to let any water out. It is good to have a cup under the nozzle to collect the water.

11) Now put your steam nozzle into your milk and open the steam. If you put the nozzle at the bottom of you milk you will make less foam, like a latte and if you keep your nozzle near the top of the milk you will make more foam, like a cappuccino. Steam your milk until you have the amount of foam that you like and the milk is just slightly too hot to the touch (140-160 F)

12) Close the steam and take the nozzle out of the milk. Now lightly tap the bottom your pitcher and swirl the milk to make the foam just right

13) Turn the steam function off by pressing the bottom button. The bottom red light should turn off.

14) IMPORTANT. Now you want to surf the temperature back down to the proper coffee pouring temperature. To do this you want to have an empty cup ready under the steam nozzle. I use the cup that I will drink my coffee out of to heat it up, afterwards I place it on the heating trip. Open the steam knob all the way and after this press the middle button (the coffee button). You should get all the steam out of the wand at first and then the hot water will start pouring out. Do this until the middle green light turns off. Now unpress the middle button and then close the steam knob. This will help prevent your machine from burning out its heating elements.

15) Once the middle green light turns on, place your shots under the filter and press the middle button. Espresso should start pouring out in a few seconds.

16) Once you have the right amount of espresso unpress the middle button.

17) Pour your espresso into your warm cup and then pour in your steamed milk slowly adding in your foam at the end.

18) Enjoy you delicious espresso.

CQE-US-00305 6 stage Single Undersink Water Filter provides 30,000 gal Save 8% Off

CQE-US-00305 6 stage Single Undersink Water Filter provides 30,000 galWhen I remodelled the kitchen in the spring of 2009, I followed the recommendation of the Home Depot guy to install a simple GE under sink filter (that $55 one). Like most people, I want to have a peace of mind that we have clean water to cook and drink. Well, it worked for 2 months and the water started to smell and taste strange. With the replacement filtering core at almost $10 a piece, It made me wonder how much will it cost me over the years. So, instead of buying a replacement filtering core, I made a research to find a new and better quality filter.

I conclude that this Crystal Quest 6 stage single undersink filter (CQE-US-00305) is the winner hands down for the following reasons:

1. It''s physical size fit real nice under my sink and did not take much space at all

2. According to it''s specifications, it does filter out lots of stuff comparable to those bigger and more expensive units

3. The inner filter last a long long time (5 years), it also comes with a simple reverse knob to flush it clean in between

4. Very very reasonable price.

5. Installation is very very easy.

Note as a DIY guy, I studied the manual, so I know what I need to do and get all adaptors that I need. This way, I install this filter in only 20 mins !!

It''s been 18 months since I installed this fileter. The water comes out clean and odorless everyday. Note that the way I hooked this up, this filter provides clean cold water to my kitchen sink for us to wash the food and cook with it. It also provides cold water to the hot drinking water boiler (also under the sink) for which we use this to make tea/coffee and a lot of times use this very hot water to clean up greasey pots and pans. So, water runs through this CQE-US-00305 filter like a lot on a daily basis.

So far, I am yet to flush clean the filter for the first time. In fact, writing this comment reminds me to go do it.

That''s what they say, kind of difficult to calibrate quantity usage, but if it only does 1/2 that amount it far surpasses any of the competition. That said, overall quality unit, installation straight forward, end result quality drinkable water, nuf said ?

The air conditioning in my building has not been working, so it has been about 80-85 degrees in our cubicles. With this product, I am actually able to be comfortable. It was very easy to set up and get going and the water lasts a long time between fill ups. I do add ice to the top for more cooling. Three people have bought one since they have seen mine, and others stop by to cool off. I shopped around, and this cooler was about the best price and, as I said in the title, it is also kind of "retro" and cute, as well as functional.

This unit has been perfect for my intended use.

My co-workers prefer to keep our office building a bit warmer than I am comfortable. I have set the Unistar Swamp Cooler in the door of my office, and it effectively keeps my office several degrees cooler than it would otherwise be. I wasn''t sure when I bought it whether it would work in a humid region, and have been very happy that it does. Nor does it make the environment uncomfortable humid. I assume that if the primary central A/C went out, this thing wouldn''t do much of anything, though, in South Carolina.

Also, the manual is a joy to read. Honestly, I''ve read it cover to cover at least three times. It is an excellent and humorous example of non-native translation. Example: "Attention: Any parts of the control panel should be forbidden to be stained with water." Well, it amuses me, anyhow. . .

UPDATED 1 September 2011

I''ve had this swamp cooler for 2.5 years now. I use it every business day. It still performs well. As for maintenance, I had to take it apart to clean it after about a year and a half, and just today had to give it its second cleaning. It takes about twenty minutes to take apart, clean, & put back together -so less than an hour of maintenance time for 2.5 years (in addition to occasionally wiping down the ice basin & rinsing the filter). It''s made out of plastic which I would imagine will only stand up to two or three more overhauls, but it''s not cheaply made to the extent that it should lose a star. This thing is really a champ.

This is a great fan, nice looking, quiet and effective. I use it in my garage apartment and provides a nice comfort level. It is easy to operate and fill in with water. 8 gallon tank requires re-fill every other day. It comes with 4 ice packs. I use 2 at a time with the other two in the fridge and replace the ice packs every day. The top of the unit also has a compartment, where I add ice daily. The only thing that could make this fan better looking is to have a choice on the color. White is great, but would be nice to have a choice for the side light green color.
