  • Nominal filtration rating of 1 micron
  • Coconut-based carbon block media with polyolefin pre-filter and polyethylene outer netting
  • Initial pressure drop of 3.3 psi at a flow rate of 1 gpm
  • Temperature range of 40 to 125 degrees F (4.4 to 51.7 degrees C)

This is my first & last time ordering water filters on AMAZON.

I ordered 2 coconut filters & all 2 came with punctured whole (by knife) both identical holes on the same side. Why I assumed it was by knife? Well, it''s not me but my boyfriend, who is an expert LOL.

He sad that it''s too obvious, that there is no way it was made by nail,of fingernail, coz both are absolutely identical with marks left on rubber gaskets on both filters.

PS

I just checked all reviews ,once more, & found more customers, who described same issue with punctured holes.

For whatever reason they did this , they have to explain:

either this to prolong shelf life, easier to pull out of the case,or they hate Yankees... LOL.

----Ether way it must be clarified, coz I''m waiting for them to verify is it safe to install !!!!!????----

I was an industrial engineer doing water systems and learned to trust the Pentek brand. I am glad to find these available for residential or homeowner use. They are of high (industrial) quality.

The product itself is great. I don''t recommend buying this from amazon as they can''t get one shipped to you without the factory sealed plastic wrapper being torn. I don''t want to install a filter, which has potentially been contaminated, into a reverse osmosis system for 6 months in room temperature water and let the bacteria and or contaminants multiply for my family''s consumption. In the future, I will just have to let myself get taken advantage of at my local plumbing supplier and pay twice as much to get the same filter that has remained factory sealed.

Hoover MaxExtract All-Terrain Carpet Cleaner Save 27% Off

Hoover MaxExtract All-Terrain Carpet Cleaner, F7452900PCI have previously used the Bissell 9400 ProHeat 2X Select Upright Deep Carpet Cleaner to clean the inevitable stains associated with cats and potty training little boys from my Berber carpet. A friend has that cleaner, so I borrowed it on several occasions before finally deciding to get one of my own. Just before I was ready to buy, Good Housekeeping ran a review on the Hoover SteamVac so I looked it up on Amazon. I read the reviews and decided to take my chances with it.

I am amazed at the difference in the two machines. The Bissell used to shear off fibers from the carpet and leave a nasty trail of what looks like hairballs behind as I worked. The clean and dirty tanks are in the same unit which is clever, but almost impossible to clean.

The Hoover has two tanks one for clean hot water with a compartment for the cleaning solution, and one for the dirty water. Both water tanks hold a gallon. I had no problems loading the clean tank or removing the dirty tank. No dripping of dirty water, no puddles on the rug or the kitchen floor when changing tanks.

Like I said before, I''ve cleaned my entire house several times with the Bissell machine, but I was amazed at the almost muddy water that came out of the carpet. It was as if I''d never cleaned the floors before. The dirty tank is easy to rinse out and reattach. The trick is to "recline" the machine so the clean tank is laying on the ground attached to the handle. Unsnap the clips and the dirty tank comes right off with no problem at all. Clean it out, snap the lid back on and clip it back into place and then you can stand the handle back up and deal with the clean tank.

The suction on this machine is amazing. It used to take hours and hours for the carpet to dry when I used the Bissell. I''d have to turn the fans on high and let them go overnight to have dry carpets in the morning. Two hours after cleaning the carpet (2 cleaning/rinse passes plus a rinsing only pass) and the floors were nearly dry.

I tested the Hoover on my kitchen tile. I hate ceramic tile. I will never have it in another house, but I''m stuck with it for now. I usually use the Vapor Clean II steam/pressure cleaner on the tile, but decided to give the Hoover a try since it came with the cleaning solution for the job. I wouldn''t want to use it every time I clean the kitchen floor, but for a quick cleaning before company comes it''ll do the trick. Again, I did not have any puddle problems. If you release the trigger just before you finish your pull stroke you won''t have any puddling to speak of. The Hoover does a great job sucking up the water on the tile and even gets the water from the grout. It doesn''t do a great job on grout because that''s not what it''s designed to do. I''ll stick to my VaporClean and the special brush I have for that.

I''m also happy with the amount of cleaner used. The Bissell goes through cleaning solution at a much faster rate than the Hoover does. I like that, since leaving soap on the fibers is just going to make the floor get dirty faster.

The only things I''m not thrilled with:

The cleaning solution dispenser is integrated with the clean water tank. I wish it came with a spout or something attached so that pouring out leftover solution wasn''t so messy. I know I could leave the solution in there between uses, but I have already had to pour out leftover carpet solution to switch to the hard surface cleaner then I had to put the hard surface cleaner back in the bottle to switch back for more carpet work. Some sort of retractable spout or a reversable plug with a spout attached would be great.

The hose attachment is kind of flimsy. I''ve had the whole hose assembly fall off several times as I was changing tanks. It''s not a huge deal, but it''s annoying to the point that I''m considering taking that part off and storing it separately until I need to use the hand tools.

Buy this cleaner you won''t be disappointed!

UPDATE: January 2011

I still love this machine. I don''t consider the drips that come from laying the handle down to be a problem. It''s how the unit was designed. It''s certainly not a return-worthy concern. I am capable of placing a towel on the floor to wipe up the drips from that, and it''s never more than a few drips. And it''s clean water, so who cares?

It still works great for me with no problems at all since I got it in 2007. I quit buying the detergent that goes with it and only use vinegar in the detergent tank now with no problems.

As far as the performance on carpet, it''s still great. I shampooed the white carpet at my grandparents'' house recently and they were mortified by how much black water came out of the machine. They''ve had their home professionally shampooed within the last year, too. Their carpet came clean and looked fantastic when I left.

I haven''t used it on my carpet upstairs lately because I don''t allow food up there, so there''s not much need for more than regular vacuuming. I do use this machine more frequently on my kitchen tile than I thought I would, and I''m still happy with it. It gets the job done quickly, and the floor is dry when I''m done. It''s loud, but not so loud that I don''t want to use it.

Maybe they''ve changed things with the model since 2007, but my unit is still going strong. There may be better tools for the job out there, but until this one breaks I''m happy with what I''ve got. I''m not crazy, just satisfied. I''m not sure why that''s so difficult to believe.

So i''ve been looking for a steam cleaner for over a week, reading reviews on any steam cleaner that has a review to try to choose one that will work for my family. With all the negative feedback on the Hoover I was disappointed and thought about changing brands. I had a hoover spin scrub and it has worked wonderfully for over 5yrs but with bringing up and down the stairs and my son letting it pound on the stairs the front plate broke off. Although i could get it repaired, honestly i felt it was a good excuse to get myself a new one and chose to give my old one to charity.

Of all the reviews i have read, the one that i felt had any true meaningful information was a gentleman that was an engineer that said that the plastic on the tank was too brittle. Armed with this information, i did go to my local Hoover store to see what they had in stock. I was ready to purchase another spinscub or to have mine repaired.

I purchased the All-terrain steamvac after talking to the rep. She did not dispute that the tanks plastic is more brittle and should be able to withstand a little more abuse, however, she also said that all of the people that have come into the store to have the tanks replaced, have abused it in some way. The plastic is not made for EXTREMELY hot water, so if your tap water is extremely hot, then fill the tank with some cooler water. the hotter temp. will crack the tank. She said her hot water heater is set so high that when you run only hot water it is too hot to touch. and she mixes her water with cold to get the temp. right. The other scenerio she explained is people dropping the tank when it is full of water. In all the years i can''t remember ever dropping the tank so i wasn''t concerned about that. And the last scenerio she explained that one woman had her teenager using the machine and had shoved the tank into place and it cracked somehow.

i tried replacing the tank myself in the store and it seemed pretty simple. so i bought it.

i have only had it for a few days but have already cleaned with it. and i love it.something must be wrong with the other reviewer''s machine because i filled mine with 16oz. of cleaner and have cleaned my formal living room, formal dining, family room, guest room, stairs and basement , probably close to 1500sq. ft. and still have over half of the solution in it.

The new design is much better than the spinscrub. The hose for the hand attachments attaches in the front so it won''t crack at the base like in the older models. I like that the cleaning solution is in a separate container so when you run out of clean water or the clean water gets cold, you can just refill the water side without having to waste cleaning solution or needing to measure out solution every time you need to fill the tank.

The rinse button is nice when you''ve sprayed down a stain in the carpet and it gets too soapy, then just flip the button and it only dispenses water.

The people I talked to at the hoover store say that most of the repairs with the valves involve the solution that is used. Oxy-clean eats at the rubber and then they don''t seal properly. Never put oxy-clean into the tank. It is fine to use the spray oxy on the carpet but not the powder stuff.

i have to say that it cleans great. My dog barfed some green stuff on my carpet a week ago and since i haven''t had anything to clean it up with, it has just sat in the carpet. Well the stain is gone and it sat in the carpet for a week!

The dirty water tank is always coming up with dirt and stuff. The dirt stains in my carpet from my dogs/kids are gone and the carpet looks great. I am very happy with it. I will buy the extended 3yr warrenty on the machine. For 50bucks it will protect my investment in case i change my mind about it in a few months!

But I recommend for anyone go to your local shop. I read a lot of the reviews with women bitching about the tank not fitting into the bathroom sink or the cord not being long enough. Personally, I don''t want a small tank that fits in my sink. I have too much carpet to clean and the smaller the tank, the more I have to refill it. We''ve all had those days when nothing is going our way. Just relax. Get a grip! It''s just a steam cleaner and our country is at war!!! Hope this was helpful!

We purchased the All Terrain about six months ago. The instructions are very well written and assembly was easy. I fired it up for the first time and it cleaned the carpets beautifully. I thought we had a real winner. After that initial use the problems began to creep up. Starting with the second use, the clean water tank began leaking around the seal at a fairly significant rate. I probably should have returned the unit, but I didn''t, and now regret it because it is now totally out of commission. The brushes are connected to the unit via a drive shaft that is less than 1/4" thick plastic. On our cleaner this shaft sheered off and is stuck in the unit. Only at this point did I do any serious research about the All Terrain on the Internet and realized that these two issues are very common with these units and apparently dealing with Hoover for repair can be a nightmare. Caveat Emptor

This is a great steam-vac. It does a great job, easy to use, and the other reviewiers have covered the high points pretty well.

On the other hand, the thing that is driving me nuts is trying to buy replacement parts. All I need are the two clips that hold the receiver tank on the unit''s base. My girlfriend managed to break them and now the receiver unit doesn''t seal as well and the unit doesn''t clean as well either due to lack of suction, minor leakage, etc.

I''ve tried Hoover. I''ve tried the other stores that sell them. You can''t just buy parts for the damn thing. So people should just know if something breaks and it is out of warranty, you may just be buying a new unit as opposed to buying a few dollars worth of plastic.

With that one caveat, it is a great cleaner. Just don''t break anything and don''t let anyone else break anything.

I owned a Bissell steam cleaner for two years,& only got fives uses out of it. After that huge dissapointment, I researched Hoover steam cleaners & based on my results, I ended up buying one . I love this machine.

I''ve had my steam cleaner for almost two months now, and it does a great job cleaning the carpets, I use it every other week. I have five dogs & two cats, and the carpets look great. It does an amazing job getting all the dirt out of the carpets. I was also surprised by how quickly the carpets dried. A half an hour was the fastest drying time, I used really hot water(not boiling).

It also did a nice job on the bare floors. After the water was sucked up,the floors were totally dry.....impressive.

Cleaning this steam cleaner is a breeze. The simplicity of it all just makes me appreciate this machine even more.

The brushes pop out making it easier to get out all the carpet fibers ect. The front snaps on & off making it easier to maintain. The double canisters are also a good idea.

I''ve used the hose once with the spin attachment, & that really didn''t impress me much. And wow, could Hoover make it any heavier. I have to wear gloves while using it because I started to get calluses.

With all said and done,I think there are so many good qualities that I''m willing to over look a few flaws.

I''m glad I bought this,it''s expensive but worth it. I''ve always heard "Hoover" was the best, and now I''m experiencing it for myself.

Jelmar #BK-2000 26OZ Clear Bath Cleaner EACHWe have very hard water and even using a whole house water filter and a water softener, we still end up with deposits in our toilets. I bought this CLR Bath and Kitchen cleaner because it says "Quickly cuts through calcium, lime and hard water deposists, soap scum, dulling film and dirt". It doesn''t do anything. I sprayed into one of our toilets and it foamed. Then after letting it sit awhile, I brushed it, stains were still there. I have better luck using plain bleach. Perhaps the bottle that I bought just had water in it. I''m going to take it back to the store and get my money back. I have found that CLR products have always been way over-hyped and have never performed as advertised.

I had a ton of soap stains in the bath room. I thought this thing would be a miracle worker but it works just okay! I would say its no better than lysol in the Kitchen and Bath for the heavy price tag I would probably not buy this product again!

Black & Decker SDC850 SpaceMaker 8-Cup Coffeemaker Save 13% Off

Black & Decker SDC850 SpaceMaker 8-Cup Coffeemaker with Thermal CarafeI pre ordered one of the SDC850''s a month ago and it showed up yesterday. Nice looking unit, but pretty por performance.

Mounting "Simply grasp the top panel and pull it off" I''m 6ft 185 lbs and couldn''t get the top panel to slide off, maybe some C4 would help? No problem, it can be mounted in one piece.

The template doesn''t have the measurements that the directions say it does. OK, figure that out and drill the holes.

Using the spacers required for my cabinets I find that the only screws that will work are the longest ones which are so long that they bottom out in the front right hole. Out to the garage to cut the screw shorter.

Next I attempt to pull out the filter basket won''t come out. I pull on it hard enough to start flexing the entire coffee maker and it comes free. Turns out that the hole in the filter basket that engauges the retaining pin has a plastic "turd" still on it. Trim that off and it works well.

All mounted up, give the coffee maker a try. It brews a good cup of coffee. However, it doesn''t seem possible to pour that cup of coffee without getting some all over the counter.

EDIT: It appears that my caraffe is defective, which is the reason for the inability to pour cleanly. The coffee leaks between where the stainless bottom and plastic top are glued together. I''ll be contacting B&D warranty for a replacement.

UPDATE #2: Got ahold of B&D warranty and it appears that they have no parts or even any full units in stock. New pot is on order for me with no ETA.

Update #3: It''s now April 3rd and Black and Decker still does not have any replacement caraffes to send. I should have returned the whole thing immediately.

Update #4: May 5th and still no caraffe. B&D''s warranty service is unimpressive to say the least.

Final Update: May 15th finally received a complete replacement unit from B&D. Thankfully this one doesn''t leak.

I got the SDC850 and installed it immediately. I have owned 4 over the last 19 years. My favorite was the GE thermal carafe (that later became black and decker) that hung from the coffee maker. Well this is just like it, except for the fact that the GE had a glass thermos type carafe and this one is Stainless. With the glass one I used to make coffee every morning and it would still be warm 9 hours later when I got home. Anyway, the SDC850 is a real nice replacement for the old spacemaker. The mounting bracket took some extreme strength to remove so it could be mounted. The template used to drill holes was a bit off, nothing that larger holes couldnt fix. This unit has a larger LCD display and LED indicators. One feature that I used to dislike was not being able to tell if the coffee maker was on. This new coffee maker addresses that. A nice bright blue LED lets you know it is brewing. The other nice feature is a blue led that stays on for 20 minutes after the brew cycle completes, thus letting you know its fresh. The unit is very high off the counter allowing for more counter space and since the carafe hangs from the unit, you do not have to leave it hanging thereby creating even more counterspace. I read all the other review about this unit and except for the mounting issues, I have had none of the other issues others have spoken of. It took years but I am happy B&D finally listened.

Buy Black & Decker SDC850 SpaceMaker 8-Cup Coffeemaker Now

I just received my coffee maker and installed it. I actually only give this 1/2 a star for looking good.

Screws were either too short or too long. I had to cut the long ones down, file them and die the threads to make them work. I also had to fabricate extra spacers in between the top of the maker and the cupboard for the unit to fit securely. There aren''t enough spacers provided. BIG HASSLE!

The carafe leaks in between the metal and the plastic when pouring.

The water reservoir is too large (surface area) and flat to correctly measure the right amount of water.

Clock doesn''t have a backlight. Is this too much to ask for?

My old coffee maker is a black & Decker, it''s been very good to me, just old and out dated for my kitchen, even in it years of service it still brews a much better cup of coffee than this new one.

Also, I was surprised to see in the instructions that it should be "unplugged from outlet when not in use". So I''m to reset the clock everytime I use it? I don''t think so.

I hate it when I feel taken. I guess it''s a lesson learned, This is definitely not worth the price I paid. If I can''t get a refund, I''ll throw it away, eat the $$ and not buy B&D again.

The Black and Decker SDC850 is a very nice looking coffeepot.

Thankfully I read the previous reviews on here when I bought it so was prepared for a difficult time with installation. I have three suggestions to make this MUCH easier for everyone who buys this. 1) remove the top cover with the help of a 2nd person!! Pops right off when one person holds the sides of the coffee pot and the 2nd person pushes down and out on the top cover (this is not a matter of strength as one person felt it necessary to give their stats (funny!!) but simply a matter of leverage. 2) Do not trust the template 100%, it is a good guide to make your holes but is off when used to judge the distance from the front of the coffeepot and where it will sit from the front of the cabinet. Set where you think your holes should be by drawing a straight line with a pencil, then measure and recheck! and last but not least 3) go to Home Depot or Lowes and buy two #10-32 X 2" machine screws (fine thread) for the right side. For most standard cabinets you will use the two longest screws on the holes on the left and the two you will buy on the right, along with the two largest spacers on each bolt/screw.

Follow these 3 tips and you should have a hassle free installation which is what seems to be everyones main complaint! Now, enough about the installation, on to the actual unit itself.

This is my first stainless steel carafe. The unit I was using before was Mr. Coffee model FTX23. This coffee pot was quite a change. For one, I didn''t notice is said it was an 8 cup (my old was a 12 cup). The size might have discouraged me if I had noticed but honestly this may be better, less coffee left over and thrown away. The taste is good and the coffee seemed to stay fresh and hot for 4 hrs, may last even longer but that was how long mine lasted. I do wish they would have lit the LCD clock. The pictures really don''t do the unit justice. The pictures make the plastic parts of this unit look greyish and cheap. This unit is black and stainless and really compliments my kitchen with all black appliances. I don''t think it looks cheap at all. It is a very nice looking unit. I really like the blue LED lights that light up the power button and the see through water level window. As someone else on here previously pointed out, the instruction manual does say to unplug after use, it also tells you how to keep from breaking your glass carafe! These are obviously generic instructions used across many different models. I am just curious how much electricity is actually used by this pot by just leaving it plugged in all the time, as I can''t imagine resetting the clock every day! As far as I''m concerned the problems with the installation are the only reason I''m not giving this 5 stars.

We installed this product in our fifth wheel camper several weeks ago. The installation was really not as difficult as we had read in the reviews--template worked out to be true. Only difficulty we had was the nut for the bolt (that came thru right above the water reservoir) had come out and we couldn''t use that bolt, but the other 3 held it tightly enough that it was not an issue. First usage was great, as have been every usage since then. Love the way it looks, ease of filling water reservoir, temperature of coffee even 6 or 8 hours later. We had nothing but problems with the prior B&D we installed in 2003--worked fine for awhile, then wouldn''t brew coffee strong enough so it had to be run thru twice. Had to watch that the water was actually going inside the pot rather than all over the counter, warming plate quit working, couldn''t trust the programmable feature, couldn''t pour coffee from the carafe without going all over the counter or table. This new pot is a great improvement!

PlungeMAX PF000507 No Mess or Splash Sanitary Plunger
  • No Fuss, No Mess, No Splash
  • Never Touches Water, Sanitary Design
  • Large Bellows Design - 25 Times Air Displacement compared to Traditional Plungers
  • Strong Vinyl Construction - Long Lasting
  • Easily Folds for Storage

I have a Kohler Wellworth elongated bowl (a rare Kohler that tends to clog easily). Regular plungers do not seal the opening because of its odd shape. I ordered this product out of desperation, and the first time I used it I almost flooded the bathroom because I was pumping it the way you do with a regular plunger (this was after the toilet snake failed to do the job). DON''T PUMP THE PLUNGEMAX REPEATEDLY! If it doesn''t clear the clog right away, it pulls water in from the tank with each pump and causes the water level in the bowl to rise. The second time I used the PlungeMAX, I pumped it once quickly, slowly lifted the seat from it, then pumped it quickly again. This time the clog was cleared. Next time it took 9 pumps to clear it, but it beats the heck out of calling the plumber. And no dirty water touches it. A good product if you know the trick!

I had high hopes for a sanitary and easy to store plunger replacement but this product unfortunately just doesn''t work. The first time I tried it, all the air went into the tank instead of down the drain and shoved the flapper up, almost overflowing the toilet which had a full tank as specified in the instructions (a bad idea when the possibility of the toilet flushing into a clogged bowl is so high). The next few times I tried the last resort options in the instructions, going as far as plugging the overflow tube with my thumb and holding down the flapper with one hand while frantically flapping the toilet seat and plungemax with the other (with the tank empty and the water turned off thankfully). Nothing happened except what I''m sure are hilarious pictures for the family. I''m a pretty persistent guy and tried it in multiple configurations for over an hour and a half with literally nothing happening. No sound of water, no slow drop in water level, no flushing. I finally gave up and grabbed a plunger and the clog was gone in one stroke.

This is a great idea and an innovative solution to a messy problem, but it just doesn''t work very well. If you can design a plug for the overflow valve, lock for the flapper, improve the plungemax''s seal to the bowl, and increase the springback of the plungemax to make quick repeated uses possible, the product may catch on. Right now though, I recommend that everyone stay away from this product until it is improved.

I currently have 3 regular plungers with handles in my home. I hate having to use these. Only one of them works with minimal splash. The problem with these are they don''t seal the bowl well on an elongated bowl. I hope to never use these again after using the plungemax. I have used the plungemax a couple of times and it has worked perfectly each time. Nothing touches the water. There is no splash and no wet dripping plunger to remove from the bowl and clean. I hope to never go back to the stick plunger again. If you have the problem like I do with family members clogging the toilet, I highly recommend getting a plungemax.

I first used the PlungeMax after my husband managed to clog up the toilet (and then left for work). Having never liked using a plunger I was hoping for a clean, easy to use product and the PlungeMax is it! I''ll admit I was not sure it would really perform as stated on the package but with two "pushes" the toilet was unclogged. No mess, no plunger dripping disgusting water on the floor. I have used it many times since then and every time it does the trick. I found it very easy to use, and of course easy to store behind the toilet. I would highly recommend this product

This thing has cleared the clog with only one try each time that I''ve used it so far, saving me hours of plunging, augering and so on.

If you''re looking at this item, you should probably just buy it. really.

Crane Hs-3161 Drop Shape Humidifier Filter Save 9% Off

Crane Hs-3161 Drop Shape Humidifier FilterI got this because I knew in advance that my tap water was ''hard''. In the drop humidifier instructions (which you don''t read until you have purchased the thing) it says note: It is recommended you used filtered or distilled water. The reason is because the minerals in tap water will cause some white dust to come from the machine. And I guess over time it will cause the unit to not work properly. Anyway I got this thing and they don''t list here that it should be replaced after 30-40 refills and you refill every day. That means the life of the filter is around a month. Just consider this expense if you have hard water like almost everyone does.

The filter itself is around 3x5 inches. It fits in there just fine. You have to soak it for 30 minutes before you put it in the machine.

We ordered this filter for our Crane drop humidifier EE-5301 as we have pretty hard water in our area. The filter works well and we have stocked up to get us through the winter season. I read the previous reviews and found the filter to fit perfectly. It seems Amazon took care shipping the correct product. I would recommend this filter if you have lots of minerals in the water or use well water

Crane has updated the drop shape humidifier and in the process changed the required shape of this filter. Unfortunately, they didn''t change the model number at all. So if you buy this filter you really have no way of knowing which one you will actually receive and worse yet if it will match your humidifier. I just bought the humdifier new and added the filter because I know my water isn''t the best. Got both in the same box and proceeded to think I was going crazy because the filter just wouldn''t fit. Ended up calling Crane directly who didn''t want to help me because we didn''t have the correct number of some sort. Finally received this response:

Dear Crane Customer,

I apologize that you are experiencing a problem with your new Drop Shape and Filter. You are not doing anything wrong! Unfortunately, against our request, some retailers are still selling/shipping an older model of filter that does not work with the newest model of Drop Shape.

There isn''t much to say about a humidifier filter, but my humidifier doesn''t seem to work quite right without the filter so I use them.

Culligan US-600A 3/8-Inch Undersink Drinking Water Filter Save 32% Off

Culligan US-600A 3/8-Inch Undersink Drinking Water Filter
  • New slimmer design
  • Works well in tight spaces
  • Quick Connect fittings and tubing
  • Accepts most standard water filter cartridges
  • Easily installation and includes a 5 year warranty

Tired of spending your hard earned money on Brita Filter 5-packs? For 5 to 10 more dollars, you can get an under sink unit by Culligan that is easy to install, comes with a 3-month filter in the package (level 1 filter), and is easy to upgrade to more advanced filtration (up to level 4).

Summary: I am thoroughly impressed with this unit. I will update the review as time goes by if it breaks, or anything leaks, but it is well built and looks solid, and delivers water that I would say tastes better than Brita water.

I live in Upstate New York, where the water quality is OK, but there is often a lot of chlorine in the water. My main concern was reducing the chlorine taste, and this unit certainly does deliver.

I am breaking my review down into 5 parts, with each part getting 1 star weighting: 0 means poor, 1/2 means OK, and 1 means excellent

Ease of Installation: 1 star

I have been known to be a clutz around the house but I was able to do it without having any leaks or having to install any extra fittings. Everything is snug and tight out of the box. The fittings that come with the filter have a plastic inset that you can remove to fit directly on 3/8" OD pipe or feed line. They are not gimpy fittings, despite what you might think of a press together fitting. All of the fittings were snug and secure upon install. Water pressure tends to hold them together even more tightly when the system is pressurized.

Installation tip: (This applies if you have 3/8"OD plastic feed line going to your faucet) Instead of cutting the feed line you already have installed, buy a $3 feed line at a hardware store and cut it in half using tin snips or a sharp knife. Then you can turn the water off, remove the old feed line, and install the new feed line connected to the Culligan. This way, if something goes wrong, you can connect the old feed line back up and be back with running water in only 10 minutes or so.

The entire install takes only 30-45 minutes and if you have the right tools, you may not even need a trip to the hardware store.

Don''t forget the silicone (waterproof) grease on the o-rings!

Water Flow: 1 star

I admit I was surprised by the voracity of the water flow. I haven''t measured it in GPM, but it is nearly the same rate as when there was no filter installed.

Taste: 1 star

Water tastes fresh and clean and there is no aftertaste.

Ease of Use: 1 star

Turn on the tap, it works. No waiting for a pitcher to filter or worrying about if you''ll have enough water to boil pasta without waiting 10 minutes, etc.

Upgradability: 1 star

You can buy a level 4 filter (the D40), which reduces lead and other nasties in the water, for about the same price as you pay for this unit, and it lasts for 6 months. Or, there is the Level 3 filter (the D30), which does almost as much as the D40, lasts for a year, and costs half as much. In terms of cost, it is really hard to beat the value of the D30.

Included Filter: 0.5 stars

If you want a higher degree of filtration you can always buy a level 2, 3, or 4 filter separately. However, the Level 1 filter makes your water taste nice, and for the price of the filter unit, is a nice addition. Some stores advertise units that do not include a filter, but not this particular seller.

The correct filter to buy for this unit is the D10, D20, D30, or the D40.

I am rounding up my 4.5 star review to 5 stars on Amazon, giving an extra 0.5 stars for the good feeling I got after installing the filter (and because you can only do 4 or 5 stars, not 4.5)!

I liked the idea of saving money spent on pitcher water filters. I bought this filter along with the Amazon recommended Watts faucet since customers complained about the other Culligan complete kit using a plastic faucet which breaks easily. This kit comes with a D20 filter, couple feet of 3/8" hose, two 3/8" 90 elbow quick-connects, and screws to mount to inside of cabinet.

If you plan on using this to filter all cold water from your faucet I recommend going to the hardware store to buy some brass compression fittings to adapt over to the 3/8" plastic tubing and then back again after the filter. It seems too many people are trying to get the quick-connect fittings to grip their copper pipe or tubing. In all honesty, I would not expect the quick-connect teeth to hold onto copper with high water pressure. The tiny teeth are meant to grip plastic tubing and once connected it''s nearly impossible to remove without damaging it.

Likewise, if you''re going to add a seperate drinking faucet you''ll want to go to the hardware store to buy a brass tee which fits your current piping. Make sure the side takeoff of the tee is 3/8" compression which you''ll use to run to the filter and then up to the drinking faucet. Connect your old faucet to the top of the tee. This is easy if you have a newer faucet with threaded compression nuts. Look for something called Adapt-a-tee which is a tee with a compression nut on one end and male compression threads on the other two ports.

Personally, I would prefer threaded fittings on this filter. I really don''t see how it''s worth trusting customers with the quick-connects when real compression fittings are easy to use and you can simply tighten them to stop leaks. I have no idea how long the gaskets last in the quick-connects and once put together they can''t easily be taken apart. Most people don''t even realize just how far they have to push for a complete seal.

Since I have a completely seperate line for my ice maker coming from the basement I bought a second filter for behind the fridge. I refuse to pay $30+ for a refrigerator filter that only lasts 6 months when these cheap babies last 12 months! To make things easier I installed the under-sink filter first, flushed the include D-20 filter element to get all the loose carbon out of it, and then re-installed the flushed D-20 cartridge into the fridge filter. It would be nearly impossible to get all the loose carbon out using the fridge water/ice system. Afterward, I installed a new D-30 element into the under-sink filter and flushed that.

Both D-20 and D-30 cartridges made our water taste better but I wanted the extra filtering for the faucet and will use the cheaper D-20 for making ice. The D-30 did slow down the water pressure a little bit compared to the D-20 but with our water pressure it''s just right.

I just wanted something that would take the chlorine taste out of my tap water. This thing works great. It only hooks up to cold water which is perfect for filtering drinking water. Installation was fairly easy. When I first hooked it up, water was squirting out of all the connectors. I didn''t realize that you have to push harder on them when you insert them. You have to feel it pop into the connector. You may have to buy some tubing because it only comes with a foot and a half. But that stuff is cheap to get at a hardware store (make sure its for potable water). But once this was hooked up and mounted it has worked like a charm and with zero leaks. Even the basic filter it comes with (D-20) tastes great. I do recommend getting replacement cartridges (D-30) because its supposed to filter out much more little nasties that you might not necessarily taste. Getting replacement filters is very easy, I''ve even seen store brand filters that are compatible with this filter housing. I really enjoy this filter and recommend it to anyone that wants great tasting water from their own tap. Especially if you want a inexpensive way to get away from bottled water, this saves a bunch of money within only a year.

I waited 6 months before making my comments so I know it''s not in my head. This filter has changed my life. My coffee and tea used to never taste right. It''s been going on for several years and I was blaming the coffee and tea companies of cheapening their products. I was wrong. years. Now after getting this filter, I haven''t had one bad cup of coffee or tea. My only regret is I haven''t bought one sooner....much sooner. Also much cheaper HERE than in local stores.

This is the second one of these I''ve bought this new one is for a part time 2nd home. My plumber installed the first one, and I should have looked closer at how he did it. Those push-in compression fittings were difficult to get working without leaks! I did finally get them to stop leaking, but this connection type gives me an uneasy feeling that they might pop-out at any time!

Anyway, the way my plumber did it was to push a short length of 3/8" Copper tubing into the fittings on the filter (instead of the plastic tubing supplied), and then convert to screw-on metal-braided tubing for the rest. It is better this way, but requires buying more parts at the hardware store.

Philips Saeco Via Venezia Espresso Machine Save 25% Off

Philips Saeco RI9366/47 Via Venezia Espresso Machine, BlackWe have been making cappuccino at home for more than 30 years. With a machine in each of two homes, we have run through a fair number of them, as they generally last 5 to 7 years and usually repairs, if available, aren''t worth the cost. This Saeco is very similar to the Starbucks Barrista machine, as Saeco made that machine for Starbucks when they sold it. The Starbucks machine was recommended to us years ago by a very good repair person who was unable to repair our Baby Gaggia for the second time, at a cost that made sense. She pointed out that the Barrista had a stainless steel boiler tank, an important dividing line in her estimation between machines that were more durable and those that were not. Starbucks no longer sells this model, although they do sell the Saeco Aroma under their house name. We initially bought a Saeco Aroma from Amazon, but returned it without using it because the plastic water reservoir was chipped in shipping. When we saw the machine we also concluded, however, that it was not like the Saeco Gran Crema machine we have in our other house and which we like but which Saeco has stopped making. The Aroma has a frothing wand that cannot be moved around and it is awkwardly placed. And it is pretty light, leaving me with the impression, unconfirmed, that it does not have a stainless steel boiler.

We then tried a Cuisinart, which we bought locally, and you can see my review of that machine here on Amazon. Cheaper than this Saeco but despite appearances of solidity it has serious quality control problems. Ours was among those that did not work properly and we returned it. Then we got this.

As I say, this is similar to the old Starbucks Barrista, but it has been updated a bit. It is a very sold, heavy machine and feels like it will last forever. Like the Barrista, it has the frothing wand on the left, which is unusual but not a problem. More importantly, the frothing wand is on a ball swivel joint allowing one to position it conveniently both for use and then for dripping dry over the drip tray when you are done. And even more importantly, both the frothing wand and the coffee brewing work very very well. It''s a powerful frother that lets you make the textured milk for a cappuccino reasonably fast, and its design lets even a novice produce a good texture. The coffee, of course the most important, is reliable and good, nice crema, good flavor. The water reservoir can be filled by pouring water into a hatch at the top of the machine, or by removing the reservoir altogether (after removing the drip tray) and bringing it to the water source. (Because we have this machine in our Phoenix home, where the tap water does not have a good flavor, and leaves a lot of minerals behind in any container it''s been in (water heaters have short lives here), we never put tap water in our coffee makers.) The length of the power cord is adjustable--it unwinds from inside the machine, and you can push it back in to shorten it--a nice if minor convenience.

This machine does not have any automatic features but we have never had that. But having used it now for about two or three weeks, we know it works well, produces very nice coffee, and gives every indication of being very solidly built. We are very pleased with it.

I would avoid "super-automatic" machines that grind the beans. Grinders can be fussy, and it''s better to have the grinder separate so that you don''t have to replace your entire machine if the grinder goes. The grinders in super-automatics also generally inhospitable to beans with more oil--see, e.g., the website for Seattle Coffee Gear, which provides detailed information on most espresso machines; you are warned to avoid the heartier, more roasted beans with virtually all their super-automatics. And many of those machines make it difficult to change the bean you are using to make coffee, which is s problem if, for example, you want to make decaf at night and regular in the morning.

I am the proud owner of this machine for two years now. I was a barista at Starbucks at the time of purchase, so I really have a high standard not only of espresso quality, but also how efficiently I can make myself a latte, cappuccino, or macchiato in the morning.

A few things Saeco got right on this machine:

Simplicity of design: There are not so many parts that the user will be overwhelmed, which is especially encouraging when it comes to cleaning and maintaining. Most units that have too many parts either stump the barista on which attachments to use, or how to clean the machine and its parts without ruining it. There is a plastic 2 tbsp scooper, that doubles as a packer (although a little flimsy), as well as two types of adapters that your coffee grinds sit in, one for regular coffee grounds and one for individual espresso pods (if you don''t have a customizable grinder at home, you can buy pre-ground espresso in packets).

The other main benefit of using this machine, is that you can customize how much espresso you want to pour. If you are the type of person that gets a triple-shot latte in the morning to get your day started, you can pour three shots (or almost 3 shots) before the espresso is what I would call saturated, at which point it doesn''t produce the same strength of espresso after a little more than 2 full one-ounce shots have poured. Of course, this might be a little flexible depending on the grind and quantity of grounds in the hopper. This is the advantage of having this be a ''manual machine'' vs an automatic, where serving size is pre-determined.

A couple things I''ve been disappointed with in this machine are its inability to pour shots while steaming milk simultaneously. Furthermore, steaming milk is really going to be most frustrating for those who want frothy milk or foam (ie cappuccino, macchiato, latte) because of the lack of power behind the steam wand. If you''re expecting to take drink orders from family/friends, don''t expect to crank out 4 to 6 drinks in several minutes. The manual nature of this machine, along with the inability to steam milk while pouring shots slows down production significantly, once you move beyond your individual drink.

Bottom line: I got this machine for a great deal, combining a Starbucks holiday sale (look for it now on sale for $149, with my employee discount, I ended up paying close to $90. For that price, it has been more than satisfying. I have not cleaned it as much as a responsible owner should, but the parts are very well-made so I have suffered little consequence. If you want quality espresso with a little customizability thrown in, this is a great machine, but don''t expect to crank out drink orders like they do in stores.

It would probably be prudent to offer some background information on my ''espresso credentials'' prior to getting to the bulk of my review. Knowing nothing about espresso preparation, I received a steam-driven espresso machine (Mr. Coffee ECM160) as a gift about a year ago. It was a great gift that introduced me to home espresso, although even upon first use I knew that it wasn''t making ''true'' espresso, I just didn''t yet understand the underlying mechanics behind proper espresso extraction. A little research revealed the obvious difference between steam and pump driven machines. My desire to occasionally enjoy a straight shot of crema-topped espresso, in addition to various espresso-based drinks, pushed me to begin researching pump driven machines.

I hadn''t come across this machine in my research, but instead I was introduced to Saeco''s Via Venezia while visiting a friend''s house. Seeing an appliance like this in action, and tasting the resultant espresso, is about as good a test drive as you''ll get.

The made-in-Italy Via Venezia is a single stainless-steel boiler machine, driven by a 15-bar pump and features a pressurized portafilter which ostensibly provides extraction that is less dependent upon grind size/consistency and tamping force. From my experience, the forgiving pressurized portafiliter lives up to its billing. Some home baristas dislike that it takes the user''s control out of shot characteristics but I appreciate its ability to provide great espresso without requiring every detail to be perfect I get rich crema on every pull. With a single boiler, brewing and frothing must be carried out independently. I''m still able to prepare drinks at a decent clip as the machine reaches optimal temperature quickly.

The machine is simple to use with indicator lights on the brew and steam selector buttons that specify when the machine is ready for each mode. The steam wand (panarello) swivels with a good range of motion to accommodate various frothing pitcher sizes so far I''ve been happy with the milk frothing results and the panarello is easy to clean. I''ve been able to use my 20 oz frothing pitcher without any awkward clearance issues with other parts of the machine. The design is well thought out for ease of use.

Beyond the impressive espresso results, I was also immediately impressed with the Via Venezia''s build quality. The entire outer case is metal, with minor plastic used for the drip tray and accessory tray. This provides a sturdy, substantial feel befitting the price tag. The generous water reservoir (68 oz) can be filled either by removing the reservoir container (by sliding out the drip tray assembly) or by flipping open an access hatch on top of the machine. Saeco also provides a ESE pod-adapter for the portafilter, which accepts espresso pods. I have yet to use this feature as I prefer to grind my beans prior to brewing, but it is nice to have the additional capability.

There are myriad choices in the semi-auto home espresso machine market. While the Via Venezia may not be the most cost competitive, its impressively sturdy build quality elevates it above plasticky machines of questionable durability. The Via Venezia is highly recommended for the budding espresso enthusiast.

Saeco manufactured this model for Starbucks for several years (or a close variation -I think the Starbucks version may have had the temperature control adjusted to brew their custom blend at an optimal temperature). In any case, it''s a basic, good machine from Saeco, with one odd customization of the frothing wand being on the left side rather than the right. It also rotates on a ball joint, which is convenient.

I originally purchased this machine for my mother, liked it so much I purchased one for myself when it went on sale. Eight months into owning the thing my mother''s breaks down. Okay we are a coffee drinking family, and this little guy did get a three cup per day workout. We sent it Saeco to get repaired. Ten weeks later we get it back working but now sounding like a freight train. Morning coffee takes on a whole new meaning when the noise of the machine wakes up everyone in the house. Sent it back ($80 shipping cost each time), and again worked for a bit and the noise came back. We gave up sending it back.

My Saeco worked a bit a longer. The first time mine went in for repair it was 1.5 years old. Now while I have a daily coffee, it didn''t work as hard as my mom''s unit. Came back from repair, this time a different repair facility and was working great.

Cut to: A half year later, and the thing just dies midway through pulling a shot.

My lovely repair shop is no longer open. Call Saeco customer service, and they tell me to take it to one of the recommend repair places. The first guy tells me to try fixing myself first. The second guy tells me to bring it over, and then isn''t there. I leave 4 messages over the course of the next couple of weeks he never calls back. I go to the third place after a call with Saeco only to find out after driving 45 miles away from home, that they don''t fix this particular machine.

Call Saeco back, and preface the conversation with "I''m sorry if I''m snappy but at this point I''m pissed" The lady was amazing sent me shipping labels and said they would pay for the repairs of both machines because of inconvenience.

Six weeks later, I finally get a call from Saeco telling me the machines are too rusted to fix. WHAT? HOW THE HECK DOES A MACHINE THAT IS BUILT TO HANDLE WATER AND STEAM BECOME TOO RUSTY TO FIX? The thing has only been broken for a couple of months. My mom lives in Las Vegas. I live in Southern California... inland... it''s not like we live in New Orleans where it''s humid. The customer service lady was awesome, but unfortunately she could only do so much. I would have even been happy had they offered to let me purchase a new one at wholesale pricing or give me a discount, not that I would have actually bought another of their pieces of $%^&, but they don''t care they already got my money, so all I can do is warn others.

Summary:

Purchase Price: $400 (mom''s) $300 (mine)

Repair: $160 (mom''s) $80 (mine)

Shipping for repairs: $200

Lesson learned about purchasing a Saeco machine: Definitely not priceless more like $1140
