It basically floats around in the water tank and absorbs minerals. It lasts about four months which, where I live, is about one season. It is a bit overpriced. Its not much bigger than your thumb and yet it''s $20. But it''s worth it if it works.

They seem to work well. But they leave or leak very small plastic beads when the internal mesh bag get too old.

Cartridges lasted less than a week. Absolutely terrible. Wondered whether this was a defective product or a pirated product. Bought and used the appliance all last year and the cartiridges worked like a charm. These DON''T work and I have "white dust" all over. Never had any last year.
