This Carbon Filter is the most appropriate I have found, as a prefilter, upstream of an RO Filter. Since an RO filter is very delicate, it is indispensible for the input to the RO to be free from large particles as possible. Otherwise the RO would be unnecessarily overloaded, and would work at a much lower efficiency than it normally can. For those who are adept at working with mechanical systems, it is possible to purchase individual parts, and put them together. This way one can install a system that suits the specific potable water quality, locally. A lot of unnecessary parts could also be saved. Many other prefilters that target a specific contaminent could also be added, as well as an afterfilter to purify even the output of the RO. In terms of a prefilter, I have found this type, quite sufficient. The 12" type is specially more desirable, since it has mor capacity, in other words it lasts longer. According to product specification at the manufacturer''s site, I found this brand more suitable than others. Of course, that depends on how much one is willing to apportion for this system, and what qualiry of potable water one is after. The lower micron rating is a finer filter, and outputs cleaner water and therefore more expensive. However, to take advantage of the RO filter the most, it is much better to provide as a pure water as possible at the inlet.
