I get municipal drinking water with 1-2ppm of of chlorine (as much as a public pool) and 22 grains of hardness (more than 2x what''s considered "extremely hard"). When I had a water softener installed in my house, I also had a Pentek 20" Big Blue Housing installed before softener. I wanted the carbon filter for a few reasons:

1) Keep chlorine out of the shower and bath, out of my family''s lungs and off of our skin

2) Keep chlorine out of the washing machine where it bleaches our clothing

3) Protect the resin in the water softener, which should double it''s life

4) Protect the plumbing (PEX pipes, rubber in fixtures, etc...) from chlorine

5) Remove the small amount of sediment that is in the city water which collects in valves and fixtures

I previously used the Pentek RFC20-BB Radial-Flow Granular Activated Carbon Cartridge. In comparison, this filter is less expensive, has a finer sediment filter (5 micron vs. 25 micron) and it''s rated for up to 180F. Also, carbon block filters don''t have the same channeling issues as GAC filters, which become less effective at higher flow rates.

However, compared to the RFC20-BB this filter can''t handle as much water (only 40,000 Gal. vs. 70,000 Gal.) and has a bigger pressure drop (5.5 psi @ 5 gpm vs. 0.9 psi @ 4 gpm). Neither of those were a big concern for me. We use less than 1,000 gal/week so the capacity easily exceeds the 6 month replacement cycle. As for water pressure, I get a solid 60+ psi coming into my house and even a 10 psi drop is not noticeable. If you already have pressure issues, get RFC20 instead.

Well, I have a well-start off there. Decent amount of iron content. I have a Culligan Sediment Filter in line for the entire house-lasts about 3 months and then I change it-it is pretty red. I also used to have a ''pump the chlorine in and filter it out via a whole house system that backwashed when need''-and I tired of buying the $250 Chlorine pumps on a pretty routine basis. Also, I liked the idea of the chlorine taking care of anything harmful.

While looking to buy sediment cartridges I noticed the highboy carbon filter and, what the heck, a 5 Lb pressure drop can''t be too bad.

I installed it today, after the sediment filter and, after all cleared up in all the faucets, the water looked crystal clear-just as it did without the filter, but I am convinced the carbon should deal with any ''junk'' still there after the sediment filter. The dishwasher will let me know how much, if any, of the iron remains in the water as the redness is easily detected on the unit.

My well is set to cut in at 32 lbs and off at 48--comfortable for two simultaneous showers for the years we have been here. We have two 40 gallon pressurized bladder tanks to supplement the 20 gallon unit at the pump head. I did ithis for the additional capacity to allow the girls to shower at the same time and not mid it when the toilet is flushed. Worked out well.

Now I have to decided how much to raise the cut-in pressure to avoid the reduction in pressure caused by th enew carbon filter.

Yes the O-ring is a bit of a pain, but the more lubricant one uses, like in anything else, the better.

I will try to get back here for updates.

Anyone else have experiences that might help?

Thanks

Joe

We''ve purchased a brand of water filter from Amazon in the past which worked well but this filter beats the competition hands down. We have a well and acidic water so the change in the water taste and softness was immediate and pretty dramatic. We are considering buying 2 or 3 next time to stock up.
