Mr. Coffee Electric Kettle 28-BVMCEK13

Mr. Coffee Electric Kettle 28-BVMCEK13, 17 L, BlackBought this for vacations...6 of us and not all hotels offer coffee makers. Like to make oatmeal for the kids, and a variety of hot beverages(not just a pot of coffee)...we use the folders single serve coffee bags for us, and take hot cocoa for the kids. PLUS, same size as my thermos for on the road travel so we can get things filled up fast before checking out. It''s light weight and easy to pack. Works great. Takes 8 minutes to heat up 1.7 L of cold tap water, then automatically shuts off. Love this product. Though I did buy this at a local store for $14.99...would buy it again!

I have had this kettle for a while and it worked well. Then, all of the sudden, the switch would not trigger the kettle to turn off. All of the water boiled out of it and it was still on. This is a dangerous aspect of the kettle and it has happened multiple times, once over night! Mr. Coffee needs to fix this issue.

Over the past 20 years my immediate relatives and I (three families) owned and have been using daily approx. 7 different electric kettles (all of which I selected), 6 of them made of plastic, all plastic models from KRUPS or brAun (sadly, currently, neither makes a model I like). This one from Mr. Coffee is the worst: the smell of plastic (or rubber, see below) is horrible. I even followed the manufacturer''s instructions and washed the inside of the kettle with a mild detergent, then I boiled fresh water at least 10 times (!), but the smell does not go away. What''s worse, the water boiled in this kettle also tastes of plastic (or rubber), even after I left the water boiled in this kettle out in a mug to cool down to room temperature overnight! Over years I found that practically none of the electric kettles I am familiar with are perfect, all have their own pros and cons, however, this is the first time I got such bad experience with an electric kettle! I am returning this product to the seller. I have to mention that the auto-shutoff system, the ergonomics and turn-on switch of this kettle are among the best I''ve seen, also, it chimes gently after auto-shutting off, however, these nice touches mean nothing when the smell of plastic (or rubber) is so strong. I have to admit that I am still surprised that the other 6 plastic electric kettles I''ve mentioned above did not smell (as far as I can tell), but it is always possible that the smell comes from the rubber ring isolating the heating element at the bottom of Mr. Coffee kettle, not from the plastic itself. None of the other 7 kettles mentioned have a heating element exposed directly. Finally, the smell I am referring to is very similar to how small in-room coffee machines (very) often smell in hotels, but in hotels this smell is usually alleviated by the smell of coffee one makes in these machines, but when you use them just to make hot water there is usually practically the same smell as the one from the Mr. Coffee kettle I am reviewing here! This might explain everything, as the target market for this product is likely to be similar.
