I''ve been using this as an inexpensive replacement for Brita filters.

Like the Brita filters, running water through the charcoal initially causes charcoal dust to filter into the water, but after an initial period, this stops -I just ran a bunch of water through straight into the drain. The water tastes just fine and this is much more cost-effective than buying filters.
